Swimming in the dark (DM MikeK)
Saturday September 9th, 2023 11:15:51 AM

Armalad instructs Joker to remain behind the party.
She takes point and swims carefully forward.
How is Joker moving/breathing?

The arcane archer is closely followed by Stohp, Delia, Zanderallen, and Stock, with Bartomus bringing up the rear.

As the party moves forward, the little light that was filtering down from the early afternoon sun all but disappears.
By the time the Shields have moved 90’ into the cavern, only those with darkvision can see anything at all.
Zanderallen and Stohp find their magical helms are of no help seeing further, as they don’t provide darkvision.

Stock, and anyone else with darkvision, notes the roof and walls of the tunnel widen 10’ ahead of Armalad. A chamber is just ahead.

Armalad casts light on the head of one of her arrows. If she needs to she can cover it with her hand to block the light.

She keeps looking out for potential traps.

Swimming in the light (DM MikeK)
Monday September 11th, 2023 7:26:47 PM

Armalad casts light on the head of one of her arrows and moves forward, looking for traps.

Stohp will cast True Seeing on herself

Stock moves up directly behind Armalad, relaying what he sees.

Zanderallen casts Daylight on the holy symbol at his chest.

This pretty much takes care of any impairments to visibility.

The tunnel empties into an underground lake.
The surface of that lake (light blue on the map) is 10’ above the heads of the party. The cavern roof slowly rises another 10’ above that.

There is a rocky “shore” on the far side of the cavern/lake, with tunnels leading deeper into the rock.
The shore and the tunnels (light grey on the map) are above water level.

Delia, Armalad, and Stohp notice that while most of the water in the caveren/lake is clear, a section to the left is overgrown in seaweed (light green on map)

Water Elementals! - Rd 1 (DM MikeK)
Tuesday September 12th, 2023 7:23:59 PM

Armalad and Stock approach the seaweed.
Bartomus takes up position behind them.
Zanderallen swings around Stohp and waits with the taur.

No one sees anything in the seaweed.

Armalad and Bartomus cast spells.
Armalad focuses on the seaweed patch and finds the entire patch is subject to a single, faint magical aura.

Before she gets time to identify the spell, there is movement in the tunnels ahead and to the right.

Emerging into the Daylight are 6 water elementals - four large and two huge.
They silently glide across the rocks, heading toward the party.

On top of that, Armalad and Stock both can make out the sound of a female voice calling out an incantation. Its one voice, but it sounds like it’s coming from the same two tunnels.

Armalad warns the others, "So there's some kind of magic on the seaweeds, need more time to investigate and there's an incantating voice coming from one of the tunnels."

Armalad moves up to AC43 and imbues an arrow with a lightning bolt and sends it at HWE1 (OOC: not using deadly aim so my to hit is +23 still using many shot so 2 arrows are fired)

Stohp will swim up and, presuming she hears the chanting as well once she gets closer, try to communicate with the team who've hopefully all poked their heads above water to hear her. "If we're facing a powerful druid they can summon water elementals for a long time. We should try to push past and stop her summoning."

From where he stood or swirled, Bartomus spoke to the Seaweed and asked, "Are you going to attack us?"

He then shifted towards the water elementals and yelled out in Aquaan. "We don't need to fight, just let us pass and we can talk to the Mistress of this fine abode."

He tried to catch the words of the incantation.

Delia swims up and readies an attack.

Armalad shares what she knows.
She moves up and imbues an arrow with a lightning bolt and sends it at HWE1.
It hits, sending a lightning bolt crashing around the elementals.
HWE2 takes the brunt of the bolt. The other three are able to avoid the full blast.

Stohp swims up and offers a suggestion.
Please give destination coordinates

Bart asks a question of the seaweed and follows up with a plea to the elementals.
The seaweed replies, “We must. We must hold you.”
The elementals reply, “We must. We are commanded to attack.”

The taur is unable to make out the exact incantation.

Stock asks what they’re facing, but there’s no need. He’s seen this before.
It’s Bart’s favorite shapechange. Water elementals.
The dwarf powers through the water and onto a ledge.

Zanderallen calls out advice.
Then swims for the shore and calls upon Domi's spirit to enhance his weapon.

The elementals move forward to attack.
Delia’s arrow joins Armalad’s in striking the lead huge water elemental.

Huge Water Elemental 1 slides into the water, a massive wave heading for Zanderallen. An appendage reaches out and strikes, but the paladin evades the blow.

Huge Water Elemental 2 pauses on the ledge to deal with Stock
It too, misses.

The four large water elementals make their way slowly across the stone tunnels and enter the water with a rush.

Now, two voices are heard, again echoing down both tunnels used by the elementals
Both are apparently chanting incantations.
One voice is the same female, the other male.

Delia pulls out an everburning torch from her Handy Haversack (move action) and then swears in surprise when it reveals the Croc of Unusual Size.

"Of course the way to the crazy druid lady is blocked by a giant critter. What else could we possibly have expected?" Delia mutters in frustration, the constant threat of drowning wearing on her normally steady nerves. She then forcibly steadies herself and would like to see if the Croc is open to being wild empathy-ed or animal handled. She pulls out a bit of jerky, realizing that it's a Hawky sized snack instead of something that Hawky's size would be a snack to, but why not try anyway.

Armalad casts fly on herself.
She cannot take to the sky as she’s in a tunnel.
DM assumes she moves her 60’ straight down the corridor.

Stohp moves to assist.
With her True Seeing, she quickly makes out Kar’tiss and a female elf standing in a chamber situated 10’ above the one the Shields are in.
She also sees the very large crocodile she’s standing next to.
The previously docile creature is not so docile after getting seared with a flame strike spell.
It takes an AoO on the taur, but misses.

Angry at himself, Stock doubletimes back the way he came.

Bart drinks a potion and casts a spell.

Delia moves forward.
She’s got a general idea of the location of the two spellcasters.

Zanderallen announces he’s found the spellcasters.
The paladin heals himself and casts dispel magic
The cloud bank disappears, giving everyone an excellent view of the spellcasters.

—--

The crocodile snaps at Stohp again, and again misses.

“Huh,” Kar-tiss utters, surprised. He recovers and casts a spell.
An electrical bolt flies from his fingers into Stohp, then continues to Armalad and Delia.
Stohp takes 50 hp electrical damage, Reflex DC 22 halves
Delia and Armalad take 50 hp electrical damage, Reflex DC 20 halves.

The druid recreates the fog cloud, once again obscuring vision.
However, this time movement is not impaired.

Armalad evades the lightning and fires back an arrow that somehow misses.

Stohp somehow manages to cross directly in front of an angry, gargantuan crocodile without getting eaten. She grabs Kar-tiss and yanks the startled lizard folk off the ledge.
Now this is a large lizard folk and he's got no place to go...except on top of Zanderallen.

Zanderallen gets his readied action and slices Kar-tiss.

Zanderallen Reflex DC 15 to avoid falling lizard folk. Save puts him at L56. Failure puts him prone at M56 and under Kar-tiss (lets call it grappled. I'm making this up)

Bart moves up. The crocodile is visible due to the faerie fire surrounding it.
Stohp is right in front of him.

The crocodile misses Stohp again.

Kar-tiss turns to stone.
If Zanderallen is under him, the paladin is pinned.

The druid casts a spell. Sheets of fire leap up along the edges of the room and into each corridor.
The flames circle around the crocodile, leaving it unharmed.
Zanderallen, Stohp, Bartomus, Armalad, and Delia take 78 hp damage and catch on fire. Reflex DC 24 to take half damage and avoid catching on fire.

He may be stone but Stohp is still grappling him I guess and she can use her grapple to move herself and him her speed so 30 feet and off of Zanderallen (43 to maintain grapple if that's needed? moving herself to N/0 51/52, enemy to N/O 53/54). As far as I can tell while she loses dex bonus to AC she can still make a reflex save so she somehow does all of these while keeping the stone lizard between herself and the flames (reflex 30, no damage). She also finds the time to call out to the druid. "I've got this guy cold. He's a mass murdering nut who has to be stopped but if you surrender we can arrange clemency for you."

EDIT: Her movement does draw an AoO

Fireball would impact druid, stone kartiss and croc but ignore Zanderallen, Delia, Stohp, Bart and Armalad due to it's selective nature

Druid takes 5 + 2 shock and needs to make a DC 19 Reflex save or take 37 fire damage with only 18 being taken on a successful save.

Croc and Stone Kartiss have to do the same (37 fire on a failed DC 19 reflex save or only 18 on success)

Selective nature of spell ignores Armalad's allies

Stohp uses the grappled and statued Kar-tiss to shield herself from the flames.
Once again she passes in front of the crocodile, and it still isn't able to grab her.
She pulls Kar-tiss after her.

Delia takes a step and fires a volley at where she thinks the druid is.
Please go ahead and roll your own miss chance next time
None of the arrows make contact.

Armalad fires off a single arrow. It streaks unerringly to its target and explodes in a fireball that misses all her allies, but engulfs druid, crocodile, and Kar-tiss.

Invisible Stock arrives on the scene.

Bartomus casts a spell at the druid.

Zanderallen takes a satisfying chip out of statue Kar-tiss.

The crocodile chomps on Stohp. Hard.
Stohp takes 47 hp damage.
It doesn't let go either. With the taur firmly fixed between its jaws, the croc prepares to do that thing crocs do.
Stohp is grappled.

Kar-tiss becomes flesh and blood. Grappled by Stohp and threatened by Zanderallen, he tries casting a vocal only spell.
But, Stohp's grip is too strong to ignore.
The spell fizzles.
Kar-tiss returns to his stone form.

The druid cries out, "Karkasan commands your deaths!"
She takes a step back and casts a spell.
The roof of the cavern transforms from solid rock to not so solid mud.

Which holds back the weight of thousands of pounds of water in the lake overhead for maybe two seconds.

The entire ceiling gives way, dropping a deluge of mud and water on everyone but Bart and Armalad.
Zanderallen, Delia, Stohp, Stock take 45 hp damage. Reflex DC 22 halves.

In addition, Zanderallen, Delia, Stock, Bartomus, and Armalad must make a Reflex DC 15 check or be knocked prone and swept into the nearest underground lake.

Armalad casts a Cone of Cold, hoping to seal the rest of the roof.
It doesn’t work.
To avoid injuring Stock or Stohp, the arcane archer has to angle the cone in such a way it only affects a portion of cascading water.
While that does freeze, the pressure of the rest of the water quickly tears away the plug.

Stohp stands and takes a moment to catch her breath.

Stock switches weapons as he moves to the southern wall.
The problem, the dwarf quickly realizes, is the wall directly in front of him is part of the natural cavern system. The “new” wall of stone is 10’ above him. Meaning the cavern is also 10’ above him.
Trying to break the wall directly in front of him would be a) nearly impossible, and b) pointless.

Bartomus slides in and takes a look.

Like everyone else, he can easily see the druid’s stone ‘patch’ - a 15’ wide x 10’ tall section of stone 10’ above the floor of the cavern the party occupies.
His spell easily affects the entire area, turning it all into a soft clay.

Zanderallen looks about and is able to recover his sword.

Delia waits.

Bartomus looked at the area that was turned to clay. He took a moment to consume another potion.

"Maybe stone rather than water would be more helpful."

He then shifted into a huge stone-shaped elemental.

CSW Potion for 15; Wild shape - 3/7 - huge stone elemental would have 15' reach but that's next round

Stock (JonM) HP: 212/286; AC: 27/25/14; DR 4/-; CMD: 39; Rage: 17/41 used

Effects: Water Breathing (hours), Heroism (50 min), Freedom of Movement (150 min), Resist Energy - Electricity (30 min); all durations -10 min; Delay Poison; #RagingDwarf

"That's a useful spell Bart...I'm less certain about the usefulness of being an earth elemental while underwater...even if we are currently in an air pocket."

He starts using hands and axe to cleave away all of the mud in the way, creating a ramp upward to the ledge 10 feet up.

========
Mud is weird...I'm guessing it doesn't have to be "broken" like a stone wall so I'm thinking since Bart's spell effects 2x 10' cubes, he is able to affect an upper cube where the wall of stone was placed and a lower cube down to the floor. If not, Stock also has a +18 to climb so should be able to climb up 10 feet and then clear away the mud.

Zanderallen starts to help Stock and then notices everyone's wounds, including his own. He channels positive energy, having to dig deep to find the reserves to do so.

Boss Battle - Rd 15 (DM MikeK)
Thursday October 5th, 2023 12:28:16 PM

Armalad tries again, casting a selective cone of cold at the cascading water.
She is successful at plugging up the gap.
However, she knows this is a temporary solution. Once the ice melts….

Stohp waits.

Bartomus consumes a potion and transforms into a Huge Earth Elemental.
In the process, his growing form pushes Stohp and Delia 5’.

Stock can’t reach the portion of the wall that is now clay.
He is successful in climbing up to the clay, sticking his hands easily into it soft substance. Next round, he can start clearing away with an axe.
Though it’s obvious Bart’s huge elemental form will clear out the clay in no time.

Zanderallen takes time to heal his comrades.

The water level is decreasing as more of it continues to flow eastward.
It is now thigh high to the humans.

Delia will grab Kar-Tiss and move him such that he doesn't get washed away. She will also rifle through his pockets for any notes or papers or rituals or anything else of non-magical note while earth elemental Bart clears a path.

Zanderallen steps out of the way as Earth Elemental Bart moves in. "That should clear it quick. The rest of us should probably spread out a little. If the druid is waiting for us no reason to all be grouped up for AoE."

Armalad says, "My ice solution won't hold forever. I'm out of wall of stone and I was only able to make a partial plug with my initial attempt but if anyone else has any walls, it might not be a bad idea to reinforce the ice till we deal with the druid."

"Let's go Bart. Get in there."

Bartomus looked at the dwarf and smiled. Or, did his best to create a smile amongst the various shards and cracks that represented his face. He reached out with long fingers of stone and began carving out an opening in the clay setting aside the large clumps of clay into a pile. He paid attention to what he was doing to ensure it was done carefully versus frantically.
