The party takes the south exit and heads down it. It doesn't look like it will connect up with the big chamber were the ambush was set up. Instead it loops around south and goes about 60 feet before you can see it start to open up ahead. Does the party stop and let Zeoll go ahead or do they all head into the next chamber?

Zeoll has been relying on Dancing Lights (See 9/2 post). For scouting, I imagine he has been invisible and keeping his lights way back ... up to 200 ft back. With scent and Perception +22, he can get along fairly well.
(One interpretation of the rules is that since you can pinpoint the location of an invisible creature with a -20 on the check, having a -22 Perception check and being blind is not unlije having a -2 check and being able to see. And scent allows pinpointing creatures within 30 ft. at lower DCs yet.)
Zeoll, as quietly as possible with Message cantrips, urges his friends to back away. "We should not leave enemies behind us. We should check out the otherr two passages."

The voice is silent for a long moment. The party has at best a vague notion of where the voice is (I put them on the map) but whomever it is can’t be seen so likely has some sort of magical concealment.
Finally the voice asks in a rush, ”Why are you with one of them?! Why?” It sounds male, and rough like the owner is ailing in some way, and scared, like he's ready to run but hoping he doesn't have to.

There’s another long pause, then slowly a man sort of fades into view. Tall, muscular, he’s wearing the tattered remains of a guard uniform and bears the marks of a rough imprisonment. He shivers and nervously bounces from foot to foot as he speaks. ”You’re here to save us? Thank the gods. The others are held this way, please you have to free them.” He indicates the northwest passage and starts to lead the party that way.

The guard stares into space with a haunted look making no motion to impede Mundhildur’s healing. ”I don’t remember anything except I came from that tunnel. The others must be there.”
Everything about this guy seems off, and his story does not add up - why would the prisoners be down that tunnel that leads away from Derro territory? But he’s so clearly suffered greatly at their hands from the scars on his body and mind it’s hard to say if he’s lying about everything, plotting with the Derro or something else to ambush you, or simply so messed up from his experiences that his behavior is entirely irrational and erratic. At the very least those who sense motive think he’s telling the truth about having no memory.

Not knowing whether or not Daris understands what she is saying, she says, "No offense intended," regarding the words she said. Of course, pounding him likely seemed offensive, too.
"I think we should deal with the ones we know about, where you already went, Zeoll. But we should try the other passageway to get there. We would already be there, had the guard not called out to me."
Mitch - The Twins Tunnel Network Map Thursday October 5th, 2023 7:23:18 AM Cyrion explains that the poison is likely why he doesn’t remember anything and tells him to lead the party to where the prisoners are. Asimov checks for poison. Zeoll cancels his spell and chides Mundhi. Elron asks about the spell before Zeoll cancels it. Mundhildur still thinks a trap probably lays the way the man indicated, though maybe not laid by Daris. She wants to head back to where they know the derro are.
A few of the party seem willing to follow Daris so after some hesitation he heads to the tunnel entrance he tried to lead them down previously. I don’t actually know if the others are this way, this is just the last place I remember going. They must be this way though.” he says uncertainly.
Asimov’s device finds no traces of poison.

Elron is on high alert as they follow. Zeoll will heal Daris some more. Mundhildur only gave a token amount of healing (you did 48 non lethal and he has 67 hp so another slam or two was needed)
Daris looks much less battered and bruised now. He thanks the party and leads them down the tunnel. As they walk he slowly speeds up, as if impatient or excited to get where he’s going.
The winding tunnel opens into a vast cavern with no visible ceiling. The passage gives way to a ledge hugging the side of the cavern and which eventually becomes a natural rock bridge spanning the unfathomable depths below, before leading to a tunnel opening lit by a faintly glowing lichen covering the walls.
Daris all but runs across the rock bridge to the other side. ”I remember waking up down below and wandering up here. Maybe I fell, or maybe there’s some way into the Derro’s caves from there.” He starts to climb a rough section of rock that leads down and seems fairly easy to climb.

If none take the time to rethink their current plan to follow Daris, and all seem intent on moving down the slope, Mundhi, using ropes and levitation, helps everyone safely down. And grinds her teeth all the way.

Elron gets out his rope of climbing and wonders how deep the thing is. Mundhildur doesn’t like leaving enemies behind them. Zeoll is eager to climb. Mundhildur also has rope and suggests they lower people down. Asimov offers to fly. Mundhildur repeats her objections and gets more rope. Elron explains his reasoning.
However deep this hole is, it’s deeper than the lights or rope go, so at least 80 feet. Zeoll moves across the arch and starts to climb after Daris only to immediately fail by more than 5 (DC 10 wall). Losing his grip he tumbles, bounces off a small ledge, and then hurtles into the darkness out of sight of the party. He takes 72 falling damage.

She has 3 silken ropes of 150 feet each. Drop ~30' from one that has knots every few feet Subtract 2 feet from each of the two points where ropes need to be tied to each other. That gives 416 feet. Still not enough? She also has 4 lengths of 50' silken rope. She has 2 lengths of 50' hempen rope. I think the 5 segments of 50' lengths of twine do not need mention, nor use in this case.
Mundhildur helps ferry people down, one or two at a time, levitating. She has the permanent light torch nicely slotted in a bandolier-type arrangement across her chest. Down, up, down, up, safety first. She hopes Zeoll will make it. She hopes everyone will make it. Why didn't they listen to her? About the third trip down, she tells herself to put away her resentment and get on with it.
By the way, she has some hemp rope harnesses she made earlier for members of the team. She uses those so that her friends are affixed to her via the harness, in case arms or legs get tired.

Cyrion shakes his head and thinks they should have listened to Mundhildur. Asimov comments on if they had rested he could have made feather fall parachutes.
It takes almost half a minute for Zeoll to fall to the bottom (4 rounds). Meanwhile Mundhildur is setting up her ropes, it looks like two of the long ones will be more than enough. Behind her Elron suddenly feels something touch him on the shoulder. The touch is followed by a sudden yank and he’s pulled from the bridge and into the darkness.
We are now in combat. Several actions didn’t have time to finish - Zeoll is 3 rounds from the ground, Mundhildur has just gotten the ropes all tied together to make a 300 foot rope, and Daris is still climbing down slowly.

If he is within reach of the wall, Zeoll's cloak of Arachnidae lets him spider climb on up. "D'oh!" If I had remembered I had this, I wouldn't've fallen in the first place!"
If he can't reach the side of the pit, Zeoll uses the cloak to cast web across the pit below him, land in the webs, and then spider climb through the webs to the wall and then up.

Oh, an important 'by the way' - Since she has done this sort of thing on many previous occasions, Mundhildur would have driven a few spikes in the ground to hold the ropes - and that prior to the attack, as it was assumed she had the anchors already in place and was starting to ferry folks down - and Elron was one of the first, along with another light person or persons. The Twins?
"You were all standing around together." - DM comment. Clarification request. Were we all at or near Z36/Z37/AA36? Or somewhere else? Also, had we been earlier presented with the dimensions of the area we are in, Mundhi easily could have ferried people across to say Q36 and beyond.

Hearing Elron's squawking, Mundhildur turns to see what he is going on about. [Perception 28 to see what there is to see.] More than one opponent? What size/shape/manner of thing looks to have grabbed the rooster? If she can grab Elron or whatever it is that grabbed him, she will do so. If not, she always has easily grabbable stones in her Jotun bag, and can toss a few of them at any apparent opponent.

Elron yelps and flails about. Asimov takes off. Mundhildur hears the noise and turns around to look. Since the enemy was attacking every round, she only had time to tie the ropes together and insert the spikes, but not start climbing or lowering anyone.
There seems to be some confusion on the map. The dotted line area indicates the archway/bridge above the pit, where most of the party is gathered. The one Daris ran across to reach the climbable wall. I have placed everyone where I think they are based on past posts. Feel free to move yourself.
Elron finds himself falling. After a bit of flailing he finds some sort of strand stuck to his shoulder and attacks it, but his unarmed attacks do no damage to it. Worse, now his hands are stuck to it as well. His fall stops short as he slams into the side wall of the cave and takes 4 falling damage. A strength check or escape artist check will let you free yourself.
Mundhildur turns around fast enough to see Elron leave the range of the light as he falls. She sees some sort of rope or strand, red in color, attached around him. With the brief glimpse she gets all she can tell is it’s some sort of rope or something, perhaps thrown at him from above somewhere and used to pull him to his death. Whomever is responsible is beyond the lights of the party currently, which mostly illuminate the bridge and the area below it.

Before Elron frees himself, he wants to make sure he can do so without dropping himself umpteen feet to the hard rocks below. If he judges he can reach a safe spot -- maybe a ledge that he is able to cling to in the attempt to break free -- then he will try to free himself.
Assuming it's safe, and already raging, he manages a 12 escape artist check (or a 17 strength check if both may be attempted).
Most likely having failed, he prepares to meet the spider.

Seeing Elron grabbed by some sort of line? cord? sinew? - she jumps off the bridge to come down near him, having grabbed her +1 spear as she leaped, and brings the cutting edge down with as much delicacy and accuracy as she can muster (AC 23 in this case) in an attempt to sever the line that grabbed hold of her feathered friend. Her levitation slows her. If she sees additional cords (Perception 17) she will slice some more to cut any additional lines she can see, hitting AC 31.
Damage from each cut is 8 hp.

A 17 acrobatics lets him jump 15 feet, not enough to catch Elron as he ends up 20 feet away. Unless he has a way to catch himself he falls for 64 damage. Elron realizes the danger of freeing himself. He sees no ledge or other way to catch himself should he cut the strange strand, at least not within the lights of the party. Asimov flies out to look around. He spots Elron about 60 feet below the bridge dangling near the wall. Mundhildur also jumps but does not roll acrobatics. It is 20 feet to reach him and her levitation does not let her move horizontally. In the interest of saving time I rolled for you and got a 5. It is DC 20 to reach Elron with a jump so unless there is something I am unaware of you don’t make it and can’t start cutting the whatever it is suspending him - probably a good thing since there’s a big drop under him.
Whatever has Elron pulls him up 10 feet higher. The party can now see it extending up into the darkness and perhaps find it’s source.

Elron doesn't want to become the weak link in a tug-of-war, but he had this rope of climbing in his hands. He figures if the rope ties off to whatever line's hauling him up and ties off to the rocks in the wall, that might stop his ascent. So he tries that. I figure Zeoll was 60 ft down. And he has a climb speed 20. So last round he moved 40 ft up. This round he moves 20 ft up, looks around, and sees Elron being pulled up.

Mundhildur knows well how momentum works, and how levitation works. If she stands on the edge of the bridge, allows herself to just begin falling forward so that her body is at an angle off verticle by roughly 45 degrees, knees bent, and she shoves off with a reasonable amount of force in the intended direction of travel, with levitation active, she is not going to stop all forward momentum the moment her feet leave the bridge. Will she gradually be slowed by wind resistance? Sure. But not in the course of 20 to 40 feet by much.
Regardless, under the circumstances, she will begin to ascend, looking for the thread or cord or tentacle. And then slice into it with what I previously rolled. Waiting until Zeoll webs Elron, or Elron has his rope affixed to something, so he does not begin a rapid descent, of course.
The d20+5=21 is just in case you wanted me to again roll acrobatics.

Elron tries to halt it’s ascent (it is rolling vs you CMD as you can grab onto the rock etc. to try to stop it) Asimov flies over to help. It’s a short, easy flight and just like Elron he can try to make a STR check to break the strand, though he may get stuck himself if he’s not careful. Zeoll reaches the top and sees what’s going on. He tries to web the strand. Mundhildur uses physics to get another jump attempt.
The strand gets caught for a moment on the web. It pauses, then shakes about some and tugs trying to get free of whatever is preventing it’s ascent. It manages to break most of the webbing holding it (Beat spell DC with CMB) but does not manage to move Elron up any appreciable distance (failed to beat his CMD)

He's just trying to engineer a situation where the spider is pulling against the rope and not against his weight -- but one where he's not in between the filament and the rope. I understand the game mechanics might get a bit hinky, but that's why DMs get paid the big bucks.

Elron sees no immediate place to tie off his rope. Even if he could, tying off within reach would mean the enemy would have slack equal to the length of the rope to pull him up before having to make a STR check to burst it. He can try to find a spot anyway and hope it holds (perception to find a good spot) or perhaps one of his flying allies can tie him off somewhere further away, or even hold onto the rope while he tries to free himself so they can catch him.
Cyrion finds himself on the bottom of the cavern in some sort of midden heap. There's bones and refuse here, mostly inedible things like might be left behind near a predator's den. Daris emerges from the darkness. "Are you all right?" he asks.

Most of the party is now gathered around Elron. Asimov is flying under his own power and Zeoll can spider climb so both can keep up. Mundhildur can levitate up and down to keep up but might get stuck herself unless she can make a good acrobatics check to push off the wall and get back to the bridge. Now seems a good time to break or cut the strand and have Zeoll carry back Elron - Str check to burst it or continued slashing attacks will work. The mystery monster drags him up another 10 feet so that he’s 30 feet from where he started and about 20 above the level of the bridge 20 feet away.
Daris looks fascinated and almost… disappointed? By Cyrions explanation. He looks through the refuse before shaking his head. ”I don’t think any of these bones are humanoid.”

Elron tries to cut the strand with his beak and mostly manages to get his face stuck to the strand along with his shoulders and his hand. It does seem to work a little. Asimov tries acid. Zeoll slashes at it but doesn't roll vs AC so the tough strand resists the attack. Mundhidlur has far less trouble and manages to cut it with two swings.
Between the acid and various attempts to cut it the party manage to sever the strand. Zeoll, per a previous post, is right there to catch Elron so I won’t make anyone roll to stop his fall. Cyrion gets a better look around at the area below. It’s a wide canyon with a tiny, tiny stream of water running down it. No doubt there was once an underground river here that has now been blocked or diverted. There seems to be no way to get in the general direction of the Derro camp from down here - the stream of water emerges from a crack in the wall too small for anything to move through. Judging from the party’s lights above he’s about 200 feet below the bridge above.

Cyrion looks around, then turns to face Daris. "I'm beginning to wonder about your tale. We're 200 feet beneath the bridge. If you had been thrown in here or fallen in, then you'd be dead. How did you get down here, or is this some kind of ruse?"

Elron rides spider-walking Zeoll to a safe spot, and thanks him for the rescue. He tries to wrap his head around the situation now -- a spider at some upper level, the bulk of the party in the middle, and Cyrion with their "guide" at the bottom?
"How'd you get way down there?" he calls out to the folks below.

Mundhildur wants to know what’s at the bottom. Asimov joins the rest in the bottom. Zeoll is happy to climb down.
Daris just shrugs at Cyrions questions. ”I don’t know man. That is kind of how memory loss works, you know?” he starts to examine the area more closely much like Cyrion just did.
The rest join and the whole area is explored. The stream exits the same way it enters - through a tiny crack in the wall. There is a tunnel to the south, but exploring down it soon shows that it leads directly away from the Derro and is probably not likely to ever turn back. The same goes for the tunnel above, across the stone arch. At the end of it all Daris can do nothing but shake his head.
”Ok, I give up. There is not a way to the other prisoners here. I am frankly baffled as to how I even got here, and I’m sorry for almost getting you eaten by a cave monster on this wild goose chase.”

Mundhildur votes to rest, heal Lightly disgruntled with what she thought and expressed was not the way to go, yet satisfied enough with the local exploration, Mundhi asks, "With the spells we have used, and need for healing, should we rest up here, recover a bit, before we renew our assault?" If the group agrees, she readies a spot for sleeping. Part of her doing so involves clearing a wide spot of bones and debris, working to make it reasonably clean. She asks about healing up those who need it before they sleep. She can take any watch others don't. "Besides, a few of those spells you told us you used earlier might be good to have on hand again, Zeoll."
If others choose not to, then... If they decide to press on without rest, she will help ferry people up to the top, retrieve her ropes, and be ready to head back the way they came. "Like as not they are going to prepare some sort of defense - or offense - against us."

She has extra wool blankets which she shares. Mundhildur shrinks down to her short size. She has food to share with all who would like some. She recommends not lighting a fire, as it seems to her smoke would travel through tunnels and make it easy for the opponents - or others - to find them.
She asks if someone has a small spell or potion to help restore her loss of hit points (though she does not mention 'hit points').
The woman sleeps, awakens for her watch, sleeps more, and awakens when it is time - or if there is an interruption in the night, such as from an invading spider.

The party settles down for a rest. Daris suggests they stay below, to better avoid being found by Derro, and on the far side of the canyon, to avoid whatever it was that went fishing for Elron earlier - it might come down to check to see if it’s prey fell and died, and is likely responsible for the midden heap.
Due to how close the party is to various enemies I need a watch order, a description of how you keep watch (IE, if you have no darkvision to you create light to keep watch and where?), and perception checks from everyone overnight.

Zeoll realizes that the party is taking a rest, and is a little worried. "Well, if all the lights are out and we arre quiet, maybe we'll be ok?"
"I just hope the captain does not worrry, since we won't be giving ourr usual nightly rreport."
