Boss Battle - Rd 16 (DM MikeK)  d20+14=34 ; d20+14=15 ; 2d8+10=16 ; 15d6=50 ;
Friday October 6th, 2023 12:53:52 PM

Delia rifles through Kar-tiss’ stuff. Don’t want anything important getting waterlogged. She immediately finds the lizard folk’s spellbook, and stows it away.

Zanderallen moves a bit.

Armalad points out the ice ceiling won’t hold.

Stohp thinks about moving.
DM will not guess PC’s destination. Player must provide it

Stock starts in on the clay with his axe.

But it’s Earth Elemental Bartomus who does the job.
His huge arms easily clear the clay out.

Once again, there is an open ledge 15’ wide (L-M/57) and 10’ high.
The floor of this ledge is 10’ above the floor of the cavern.

—--
There are four hill giants waiting for the party.
As Bartomus finishes clearing the opening, one steps forward and blasts Stock with its greatclub.
Stock take 16 hp damage, plus make a Climb check DC 25 or fall.
If Stock does not fall, he can melee attack G2 with -4 atk penalty.
Also note he has no shield - he's hanging from the ledge with one hand and swinging his axe with the other - please post adjusted AC.

The other giants mill around, as there isn’t enough room for the large creatures to get within melee range of anyone.

Bart and an unfallen Stock can see the druid, standing in yet another chamber further south.

She casts a spell, causing a column of flame to crash down in the center of the room. Bartmous and Stohp caught in the area of effect.
Bartomus and Stohp take 75 hp damage. Reflex DC 21 for half damage.

Additionally, the flame strike melts that portion of the ice plug it comes into contact with.
Water starts pouring down on squares K52 and K53

The water level remains thigh high to the humans.

Eventually the water would fill this chamber up but he'd rather not stand around and get blasted by the druid waiting for that to happen. "Anybody got a way to make a ramp or anything to climb up to that ledge?" He tries to dig deep and channel energy to heal his companions but finds himself unable to call forth any positive energy. He takes a deep breath to steady himself after the effort.

Zanderallen tries to dig deep and channel energy to heal his companions but finds himself unable to call forth any positive energy. He takes a deep breath to steady himself after the effort.

Delia obliterates G2. Like the other summoned creatures, the hill giant dissipates as he dies.

Bartomus casts a healing spell on himself.

Armalad hits G1 with an arrow.
G1 shakes its head in confusion

Stohp avoids the flame strike and continues to call out positions as she sees them.

Stock climbs up and moves into all three remaining giants, drawing attacks from all three.
G1 strikes true.
Stock takes 20 hp damage.

The dwarf responds, hitting G1 with a nice blow.

G1 stands there, babbling incoherently
The other two giants attack this crazy dwarf.

Bart and Stock see the druid cast another spell.
She is encased in some kind of energy field.

Water continues pouring down on squares K52 and K53

Armalad might have just the tool in her arsenal for this obstacle though she was hoping to imbue an arrow with it and launch it at an enemy but if the barrier is preventing the party from moving forward if a antimagic field would suppress it she could always cast the spell as intended on herself and breach the barrier with her friends in tow.

Armalad moves around Stock and Stohp and pursues the druid down the corridor.
She notes the barrier is not stationary, but moves as the druid moves.
She is stopped 10’ from the druid.
With her arcane sight, she sees the spell effect registers as moderate abjuration.

Bart earth glides up to Stock, pokes his face up from the floor, and asks the dwarf for an update. From his position, the taur elemental can’t see anything of interest.

Stohp finds the effect has moved with the druid.
She pursues.
She finds her weapon passes through the effect easily, but no part of her body can.
With Armalad in the way, and with the field negating her reach (can’t get arms extended), she’s unable to bring her flail close enough to attempt a trip.

Stock answers Bart. The dwarf tries moving up, but now both Armalad and Stohp are in the way.

Delia is a squirrel. Thanks to her will save, she’s otherwise still herself (ability scores, spell abilities, HD, hp, saves, class level abilities, etc are all retained).
Squirrelly-D climbs the wall, races past Stohp, and into the tunnel.
Skittering along the ceiling/wall corner, she is still brought up 10’ short of the druid.

Zanderallen promises Delia he can reverse the spell.
The paladin waits.

The chamber and corridor are shot through with sheets of roaring flame.
Everyone but Bart is effected.

Boss Battle - Rd 21 (DM MikeK)
Monday October 16th, 2023 7:43:28 PM

Stock asks for ideas, sheathes his axe, and pursues behind Armalad and Stohp.

Armalad moves around the corner and is again brought up short by the barrier.
She can see the druid just around the next corner.
She casts anti magic field on herself and finds the field no longer holds her back.

Stohp pursues, squeezing through the narrow corridor.
She has to stop when Armalad stops, and has no visual on the druid, who has ducked around another corner.

Bartomus earthglides under the party and the tunnels to OPQ 66. He looks down the corridor but can’t see much.
The ele-taur’s tremorsense is able to discern multiple creatures moving east. Most he picks out as party members moving toward another at V71.

Equipmentless Squirrel-ia keeps pace with Armalad.

Zanderallen trundles after the rest.

Armalad says, "Everyone follow me and stay close. I've got an antimagic field around me that let's me bypass her barrier."

She runs around the corner stopping at the barrier, pausing for her friends to keep up before continuing her full double move after the druid.

If she can get within melee range of the druid she'll take a heroic action (use hero point) to attempt to grapple 1d20 + 12 = 22 vs Druid's CMD

This grapple attempt would provoke an AOO from the Druid but I think if Armalad was within that range of the Druid any magical buffs on the druid would be suppressed by the Antimagic Field as the Antimagic Field has an area of effect of a 10 foot radius emanation centered on Armalad

Armalad pursues, rounding the corner.
The passageway drops steeply, descending 10’ over the next 20’ traveled.
At the bottom of this descent, the corridor is mostly flooded. water is chest deep.

Pushing on, Armalad encounters and passes through the druid’s energy field.
As she does, a fish in the water suddenly transforms back into a female druid.

She grabs the druid and holds on tight.

Delia attempts to jump to Armalad’s shoulder.
But as she approaches she finds herself, well herself again.
The ranger stays with Armalad.
For the duration of Armalad’s spell, as long as Delia stays within 10’ of Armalad, she is herself.

Stohp, Stock, and Zanderallen follow.

Bartomus also glides forward.

Bart confirms Armalad’s fears.
A druid’s wild shape ability requires no vocal or somatic components. They just become a different shape. Bart can change into animals ranging from tiny to huge as well as elementals, so it’s a good bet this one can as well.
Only Armalad’s anti magic effect is preventing her from doing so.

Which leaves the party with some really good questions.
How do they get everyone, including Delia and the druid, through 500’ of water to the surface, without the druid turning into something fast and/or unpleasant on the way?

Armalad has a shrunken barrel that was originally a contingency for Joker to be able to be submerged to be quick healed in. Theoretically the anti-magic field is suppressing the shrink item spell on the barrel such that the barrel is full sized. The question is if the the barrel is large enough to fully submerge a size small familiar could a medium creature fit in the barrel? If so then there is a way to get Armalad to the surface and not have to compromise the anti-magic field.

Armalad says, "I have a barrel it was originally intended to submerge joker in and fill with water if we needed to trigger his fast healing. The question is can I get in the barrel and we seal it and the druid will be fine cause she has gills and we tie the druid to the barrel and you tie a rope to the barrel that you get out of the 10 foot radius of my antimagic field and you get it to the surface as fast as you can?"

If everyone is ready, she will cast Water Walk on their crew, careful to keep them all out of the anti-magic radius of the barrel.

The Shields make their way out of the cavern - Delia, Zanderallen, Stohp, and Bart swimming ahead, Stock towing a rope tied to the druid tied to a barrel occupied by Armalad.

Once clear, Delia casts her spell, and the quintet, followed by a barrel, quickly rise to the surface.

Soon enough, Hasan has the Dragon Boat alongside.

The Shields, the barrel, and the affixed druid are hauled aboard.

Once she can tell that the barrel has reached the surface and has been brought aboard the boat she opens the barrel and says, "You know that wasn't as bad as I thought it would be."

"Do you think my anti-magic field will hurt the dragon boat? I'm not sure if I should dismiss it yet since we previously established the druid can wildshape without needing to speak or make any gestures." She says to the others.

Bartomus shifted from past the arrow riddled body of the lizard lord and then turned into a huge water elemental. He swam about the Shields in a large upward circular spiral. He was a bit slow in his surfacing, but eventually came up on the one side of the boat jumping out of the water and shifting into his Taur form. He stumbled and found himself desperately clamoring to grab ahold of the side of the boat.

"I don't know, Armalad. I suppose it depends if this dragonboat is really a dragon that has wildshaped into a boat. I feel like we would have figured that out by now if it were the case.

The bigger problem is when your anti magic effect wears off. It is nigh on impossible to hold a druid as a prisoner."

When they are on board the boat, Stock confronts the druidess and says, "I think it is about time you tell us what all this is about and also...Karkasan...what's the deal with that guy anyway? How does he go about winning your loyalty and getting you to live at the bottom of a lake? And why does he want to kill everybody?"

Delia, Hawky perched on her shoulder, knocks on the side of the barrel to help Armalad know they're on the boat. She'll also help the other woman get out if needed.

Turning to Norella, she taps the barrel thoughtfully, "Could we lock her in here? If she had some way to teleport, she would have used it already, right?" She trails off, listening to Stock's questions and their answers.

Since Stock has already started the bad cop side of the routine Zanderallen leaves him to it for the opening questioning. He checks in with Hasan, thanking him for keeping the boat ready and to hold off on casting off just yet, well not casting off since that would imply a dock, but you know what I mean. Zander beats a hasty retreat from his attempted use of nautical jargon and questions the rest of the Shields out of earshot of the druid. "I think before we leave we need to confirm if our captive is Norella. Also we know there were more areas in that cavern that we didn't explore. Do you think we need to rest here on the ship and go back down tomorrow? I'm concerned we may have left pieces of the puzzle behind."

Wouldn't the problem be she turns into something tiny and then when the lid comes off the barrel she eludes our grasps only to turn into something much faster and run very far away?" The crew, even one experienced with the ways of the Shields, are quite surprised at the haul that works its way on board.

Bart is the last to arrive, shifting from graceful elemental to sorta graceful minotaur mid jump. He lands awkwardly on deck, but on deck he stays.

The boat is, fortunately, nothing more than a boat.
Armalad’s anti magic does nothing to it, though the field wreaks havoc on items and powers that get too close.

Having established they won’t sink, the Shields turn their attention to their captive.

Stock asks a few pointed questions.
Zanderallen lets the dwarf go, but also would like to establish her identity.

The druid is slumped against the barrel, shoulders drooped, head hanging down.
“Karkasan is the essence of the Crying Wood,” she answers heavily. “Ages ago, his soul was somehow trapped in The Wood. I don’t know how, but he’s grown independent of the Wood and stronger somehow.”

She looks up at Stock, then Zanderallen, tears in her eyes.
“I am Norella. I went into The Wood, seeking knowledge. He..he..trapped me. Forced his will upon me. He controls me like a puppet.”

She sighs.

“It is only this field that has dampened his control. When it expires, he will control me again. I will try to kill you. It is his only command for me, to take your lives.”

Shields - do we think this is some kind of Curse that can be Removed?

Sense Motive 35

It's takes all of Zanderallen's self control to maintain a neutral face as Norella speaks. She seemed so sure of what she was saying. He knew of possessions that were quite powerful, totally bending someone to the will of the caster. But could they have been so lucky? To stumble into finding this out from an anti-magic field. It almost seemed too good to believe... But if it was true than Norella needed their help desperately. "Norella, I want to believe you and we will work to free you from Karkasan's grasp. But if you are under the thumb of such powerful magic we all must be very careful."

Zander turns to Armalad, "How long can you keep this field up? Do you have any theories of what kind of magic Norella might be under? Unfortunately if my understanding of the field is correct, we can't detect what kind of magic she might be under while it's suppressed. I have some ability to remove curses, enchantments, and other powers but it is limited and I would need to rest and regain my strength before attempting it."

He turns back to Norella and asks her very directly with genuine kindness in his voice, "Norella, I hope you can appreciate the situation we're all in. We have made a credible claim that we believe. However by the very nature of the claim we can't verify it. And to verify it we have to put you back under the grasp of the domination. And I fear not as much for us as I fear what Karkasan might do to you to prevent you sharing what you know. So I ask, if we can figure out a safe way how, would you consent to us sedating you so we can try to determine what magics he has on you? You have my word as a servant of Domi we would do you no harm."

Norella's Tale (DM MikeK)
Saturday October 28th, 2023 3:52:53 PM

Norella tells her tale, to varied reactions.

Delia and Stohp try to reassure her.

Stock wants to know more about Karkasan.
Bart wants to know more about Kar-tiss.

Norella shakes her head at Stock’s question.
“Karkasan isn’t a person, at least not now. You’ve been in the Crying Woods?”
Seeing the Shields nodding, she goes on.
“That feeling you get when you’re in there…that watching…that malevolence. It was wrong for a natural woodland, even one self-aware, to have that feel. I went in to find out why…
Kar-tiss was, is, an…acolyte I guess..of Karkasan. He found me, after, and told me some of it.
There was a war, ages ago. Karkasan and his side lost. But I guess he was too powerful to kill? He was punished instead, his body in some kind of stasis and his soul bound to that of the Crying Wood.
His acolytes were also placed in stasis.
Kar-tiss says Karkasan is growing in strength. He freed some of his acolytes. He’s dominated people, like me, to be his body.
He’s trying to get free. To return his soul to his body and escape from the prison he was confined to so long ago.”

Zanderallen is sympathetic, but his immediate concern is the druid’s compliance is admittedly temporary.

Armalad replies the anti magic shield’s duration will expire in about 2 hours.

Norella agrees to be sedated, if the Shields can manage it.

He listens to her relate more details surrounding Karkasan, "That would fit what we learned from Jella. If Karkasan is growing in power any effort to contain him would be harder. How many other agents does he have? How many steps ahead of us is he? It seems we've been reacting to his plans, we have to free Norella. And then we need to find a way to end Karkasan."

He wracks his brain on ways to to remove Karkasan's influence. "I can offer some help in form of protection from evil. What do you do with problem like Norella (DM MikeK)

The Shields mull various ways to either dampen the mind control of Norella or render unconscious.

Stock knows one method.
A good blow with the handle of his flail would do the trick, but it wouldn't feel that great.
Call it a non-lethal coup de grace

Delia and Armalad put their heads together.
Some of that lichen they saw on the lake floor, properly diluted, might serve as a tranquilizer.

Zanderallen thinks as well, but all he can come up with is your various protections and dispels.

It is not an enjoyable one.
The crew, and anyone else on the oars, work themselves into a sore muscled, hard sweat.

Meanwhile Stohp, Armalad, and others take turns watching the druid like a Hawky, stuffing a spoon of lichen into her mouth whenever she flinches.

32 long hours later, the dragon boat pulls into the docks.

The crew unanimously elects to do their drinking the following evening.
Today is for getting some sleep.

Leaving the Shields with an unconscious druid on their hands.

Armalad says, "After resting I can prepare 2 antimagic fields a day. I might be able to contact the Star Mages guild to see if anyone there could cast more but they'll probably want some kind of payment for services though given our druid friend's condition I might be able to barter having another StarMage be able to study said condition for spell casting services."

Stohp checks the time. If it's daytime then she'll drag her tired body off to find someone to consult about a secure place to keep the druid. If it's night then they'll just have to hope that they can keep her drugged till morning. Sleep in shifts.

"Yeah, let's talk to the Star Mages. Maybe they have a strong enough practitioner of the art to strip whatever enchantment off Norella. We can pay them if need be - although I do believe the city should be footing this bill...I'd recommend Bart visit the Grove as well - they might be interested in what is happening here."

"Surely one of the Star Mages with the no-magic-spell up can just read a book nearby Norella or whatever scholar things they do.
And wasn't Norella part of the Grove? They'd got to be really interested in knowing that she didn't go murderous of her own accord."

Bartomus agreed with the idea to enlist the aid of the Star Mages.

"I also think we should follow up like you're saying Delia, with the Druids for some help in keeping her and her master at bay". He pointed to the drugged druid. "Then we ask the guild for info on the various components they were searching for."

Discussion on the dock (DM MikeK)
Saturday November 4th, 2023 2:36:38 PM

The Shields arrive at the Float in the late afternoon.

Armalad offers to visit the Star Mages.

Stohp drags herself to visit somebody who can help.

Stock agrees visiting the Star Mages sounds like a good idea.

Delia thinks either the Star Mages or the druids of the Circle of Alder or both should be able to help.

Bartomus agrees with Delia.
