DM RobC - "This is either going to be a good decision, or a remarkably bad one"
Monday November 6th, 2023 2:00:59 AM

Lothlo has never seen a lumina berry before, but this is a berry and it is luminous, so perhaps this could be one?

With no other avenue, the party take their chances and step, dive, or jump into the portal.

Passing through the surface of the watery portal, you fall! It’s surprising that you aren’t wet. It’s shocking that there’s no ground! Until there suddenly is. The party's arrival is abrupt, your forms tumbling into a disordered heap upon a very hard floor. Miraculously no-one sustains any further damage.

It's pitch black, but those of you with darkvision (maybe only Nightingale?) have no troubles and can describe the area for everyone else's benefit.

The room you are in is easily some 100ft by 30ft and you've landed right in the middle of it. Looking around, you notice that above you, the absence of a ceiling reveals an expanse of darkness. The floor is made of wood, and similarly the walls encircling you are adorned with wood panelling, painted to portray a vibrant and sprawling landscape. There's no furniture of any kind, and no obvious exit with the exception of a colossal purple curtain that dominates one of the walls. Stretching an impressive 80 feet, the curtain is a regal and imposing presence.

Ruby hates portals, and this one is no exception. "wha? WHOA!! Ooof."

He immediately scrambles to his feet, buckler ready and scimitar at low guard with point just brushing the wooden floor to avoid accidentally stabbing a friend. He sniffs and strains his ears: blind in the darkness he may be, but a noise, a smell, a taste in the air, or a vibration from the wood can give a bounty hunter life-preserving information!

Berotha rises slowly to her hooves and looks around carefully. "Strange, very strange." She does not draw her weapon yet as she has learned that seeming too hostile could be as large of a threat as being caught unawares. Instead, she draws out a ten foot pole and walks toward the bottom of the curtain carefully and prods it gently to see if there is anything solid within a few feet behind it.

So... no obvious danger in this room, but it's possible anyone in the next room heard us make our less than graceful entrance and are preparing to welcome us in this land's customary fashion? Not what I was expecting, though I'm not sure what I thought was going to happen.

DM RobC - "Not what I was expecting, though I'm not sure what I thought was going to happen."
Tuesday November 7th, 2023 2:49:17 AM

Ruby reacts swiftly upon arriving through the portal, equipping himself with his buckler and scimitar in a defensive stance, relying on his heightened senses to gather information in the darkness. Meanwhile, Berotha probes the area cautiously with a pole, curious and careful.

Naithi employs her powers to grant herself night vision, scouting the area and prompting her creature to listen for any lurking threats. Highlight to display spoiler: {A couple of minutes have passed since the last combat. Any spell/ability with a duration of minutes will still be in effect. If there's something specific you're worried about let me know, but I'm not too fussed}

Zazu and Boyo use night vision to scan the room, while Nightingale, after a rather abrupt entrance, assesses everyone's condition. Lothlo, while getting up, muses about the potential risk they might face in the adjoining room after their not-so-subtle arrival.

Berotha carefully approaches the curtain, and just before she gets close enough to prod it, it suddenly begins to part, allowing a brilliant and blinding light to flood the space. As your eyes adjust a surprising realization dawns upon you: you are standing on a grand stage in front of a massive amphitheater. It's so large it's hard to tell where it ends.

The thousands (maybe 10s of thousands?) of fey creatures that are seated in the amphitheater vary in form and appearance, but the one thing they have in common is that they are all applauding and cheering your arrival!

Your attention is drawn to stage left, where a meticulously crafted wooden castle tower stands as a whimsical prop, replete with turrets and intricately carved details.

Perched atop the tower is a small fey woman. Long strands of golden hair cascade down her shoulders, framing her delicate features as she sits regally, donned in an elaborate white dress that seems to shimmer in the spotlight. A prop crown rests upon her head, completing her regal ensemble.

Flanking the stage on either side are figures dressed entirely in black, their attire indicating their roles as part of the stage crew.

"My love! You've returned!" Her melodious voice rings out as she exclaims her words with a dramatic flourish, her hand pressed against her heart in a gesture of romantic yearning. "Did you and your trusty crew find it?"

She only waits a moment - not nearly enough for the party to react - and then she repeats her lines, this time with amplified exuberance.

"MY LOVE! YOU'VE RETURNED!" Her voice reaches the furthest corners of the stage. The fey woman's gaze shifts toward the party, her eyes widening "DID YOU AND YOUR TRUSTY CREW FIND IT?" Her words hang in the air, charged with anticipation.

One of the stage-crew members deftly enters the stage, moving with an air of urgency. He thrusts a yellow rubber duck into Lothlo's hand and then makes a quick exit.

"My Heart's True Desire, I, the Black and White Knight, Builder of Bridges, and Dire Rider, have indeed returned! My lackey carries the object of our quest!"

Zazu turns to Lothlo

"Come, Sir Sloth-Lo! End your lazing about and bring our treasure hither! For we have braved storm and water, fire and air, to obtain the unobtainable! Yes, my Love, this is the amazing and stupendous Quack of Doom!"

"Come forth, all my Trusty Crew, and tell the part you have played in this Fellowship!"

Zazu pauses for each party member to speak, nodding and smiling.

Then, the "hero" says to the princess, "And now, at our Quest's conclusion, simply Introduce your Precious to the Quack, and all will be well!"

The badgerkin blinks again.

He is completely unfamiliar with the politeness protocols of the current situation, and looks about to take a gauge from those around him. People in black in the shadows stand 'mostly' silently. Fey creatures of all sorts down below clapping and shouting huzzahs. And Zazu making up a really cliche'd story with silly names and generally doubling down on whatever the small fey woman said.

But how can any of that get the Champions closer to finding Torm? Ah! The Twilight Ranger fishes in his Stylish Pants O Plenty (which turn a brilliant red) and pulls out his small teapot. "And I, Ruby the Hunter, have found the teapot of ... of... of ... Torm! If only I can have tea and scones with my good friend, the Tortoise!"

He blinks again, feeling very silly.

What man can pretend to know the riddle of a woman's mind? I do not deny that what happened to us is a thing worth laughing at. But it is not worth telling, for not everyone is sufficiently intelligent to be able to see things from the right point of view.
Naithi shoots Lothlo and exasperated look before turning towards the audience. Wit and humor do not reside in slow minds. Though I suppose the most perceptive character in a play is the fool, because the man who wishes to seem simple cannot possibly be a simpleton.

Lovely lady, you asked us if we found it, and I'm proud to announce we have. However it is one thing to write as poet and another to write as a historian: the poet can recount or sing about things not as they were, but as they should have been, and the historian must write about them not as they should have been, but as they were, without adding or subtracting anything from the truth. Perhaps you would like to hear our tale and be the judge. For the truth may be stretched thin, but it never breaks, and it always surfaces above lies, as oil floats on water.

Lothlo holds the duck towards her as he approaches the fey woman.
And now, at last, I have the pleasure of returning to you once again. During my absence I have dreamt about the joy this would bring you when I saw you again. I present the object of our quest.
Lothlo offers up the duck to the fey woman before him.

DM RobC - "The trials were many, but with my trusty and talented crew... and Zazu"
Wednesday November 8th, 2023 2:00:21 AM

In a theatrical and dramatic fashion, Zazu beckons Boyo onto the stage, making a grand entrance and bowing gallantly to the fairy princess. He proclaims his return and the quest's success, designating Lothlo to bring forth the sought-after treasure. "Oh Squire Tailsbury. You always were charming. I can see why my love brings you on his journeys." The princess in this play smiles to Zazu, as she fans herself with her hand. "Do tell me, whatever happened between you and Moonshadow?"

Lothlo playfully smacks Zazu on the head, drawing laughter from the crowd. He steps forward, claiming the role of her true love, and speaks of the risks and trials faced in their quest, and presents the duck to the fey woman. "Oh, gallant Sir Cuddlesworth! The joy in my heart twinkles like starlight on a moonlit sea! Your return heralds joy and mirth to this fairy realm! I'll cherish this adorable fowl, knowing it's a token of your courage and love!" There is a collective "Awww" from the audience. "But tell me, how did you obtain it from Captain Purplepants?"

'Ruby the Hunter' observes the varied reactions of the crowd and the eccentric storytelling by Zazu. Unsure of the current protocols, he attempts to contribute by presenting the small teapot he found, proclaiming it as Torm's. 'Berotha the Big' understands the ploy, and hopes their inquiry might get them some clear directions. "Dear Ruby and Berotha, I find myself often mixing you two up. It's understandable, considering you are twins. Tonight, there's a grand feast to fete the return of my dear one, and it promises an array of delights - tea, scones, splendid treats and of course, treasured guests. And who knows, perhaps there's something more to celebrate?" The princess holds up her hand to clearly show there's no ring on her finger. This draws a lot of "oooohs" from the crowd.

Nightingale grins at the goings on and then adds to the tale, telling of how she was able to heal her friends. "Ah, dear Mother Fluffington, your tender care for others was impressive indeed! But how did you miraculously mend your own impediment? Oh, your recovery seems truly wondrous!"

Naithi and Camalayas respectfully approach. Naithi discusses the complexities of comprehending a woman's mind and how humor might not resonate with all. She highlights the certainty of truth, in contrast to tales that can be manipulated. They propose recounting their story, allowing the lady to determine its truthfulness. There is a buzz of confusion in the audience and you're not entirely sure they all grasped what was said. The princess in the tale seems unflustered. "Willowmoon, I could spend an eternity enraptured by the tales of my cherished one. Please enlighten me; what daring trials were encountered? Was there..." There is a long, dramatic pause as she turns her head and places the back of her hand against her forehead "...danger?"

The stage crew appear puzzled about the situation, but an older gentleman, donning glasses, sifts through a stack of notes. His worried expression briefly appears, but he then shrugs and motions to the party, mouthing and whispering something.

A great bard once said that all the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players. They have their exits and their entrances, but in this tale, I sometime feel we somehow missed our cue and entered the wrong stage and that fortune is arranging matters for us better than we could have shaped our desires ourselves.

Our task sounded a simple one and our group prepared for the task. For I am Moonwillow the Undying…I have never died all my life. My companions, very uneasy after hearing that knights errant were out of fashion, and books of chivalry full of nothing but folly and fiction; resolved to stick together. For neither good nor evil can last forever; and so it follows that as evil has lasted a long time, good must now be close at hand. Even Sir Cuddlesworth, he is mad past recovery, but yet he has lucid intervals.

To obtain your token we set out in search of Captain Purplepants. Whereupon setting out thirty or more monstrous giants present themselves, all of whom we meant to engage in battle and slay, and with whose spoils we pursue our quest; for this is righteous warfare, and it is god's good service to sweep such evil off the face of the earth. Beasts with the long arms, and some have them nearly two leagues long.

Our adventure continued from trial to trial, and at times we thought it a futile pursuit and occasionally quite hazardous. Since our encounter with Captain Purplepants we have been searching for a giant turtle, thought to be descendant of the turtles holding up the Wold. Yet, the further down you go, the bigger and scalier the turtles get, with sharper and sharper beaks. Until eventually they start looking less like turtles and more like dragons.

Naithi continues her embellished story. And so, to sum it all up, I perceive everything I say as absolutely true, and deficient in nothing whatever, and paint it all in my mind exactly as I want it to be.

As his companions fill in the Fey woman of their heroic adventures, the gallant Sir Cuddlesworth makes an exaggerated show of being interrupted as he tries to answer his true love. Once they have finished he takes an exaggerated breath and responds.
As you can see, I owe much of my success to my trusty crew. Why, with them at my side I don't even need to speak... nor am given the chance.

Oh, my love, you asked us about how we got it from Captain Purplepants, well that is a tale filled with... danger!

Lothlo follows his loves dramatic lead, trusting that she knows her audience and the dramatic flare the will respond best to.
We finally caught up to Captain Purplepants in the tavern known as The Black Barnacle. He and his crew were celebrating their latest plunder with over a tankard of ale when we arrivded. At his side was our feathered friend.

Well, we did what any group of advenurers would do in that situation...

He casts a glance at Naithi, knowing she'll give the desired response to the provided opening
We ordered a round of drink!
Lothlo chuckels at her perfect delivery
That we did. We told the barkeep that only the strongest brew would do for a crew as tough as ours.
Well, you know that Captain Purplepants had to show his crew was as tough as ours, and ordered a round of their strongest drinks as well.
Squire Tailsbury then ordered a round, to soon me matched by Purplepantss first mate ordering a round.
Let me tell you, we drank that Purplepants and his crew under the table, and left the tavern victorious!

Well, we danced and stumbled through the streets singing shanty's about our victory for a good 20 minutes... then I remembered the duck!

Lothlo pauses to let the audience laugh.
Well, needless to say I was none to pleased when I remembered.
I tuned to my faithful crew and was about to tell them we had to head back, when this fluffy boy here...

Lothlo points to where Boyo is hopping on the stage
He bounds up to me, and wouldn't you know it, the duck is riding on his back. Best I can tell, the duck had the same yearning to find himself back in your arms that I felt every day that we were apart.
Lothlo finishes his take and gives a flourishing bow towards the fey woman.

DM RobC - "Let me tell you, we drank that Purplepants and his crew under the table, and left the tavern victorious!"

Zazu continues to fight for the affection of the lady, and brings Boyo bounding into the action.

Berotha (not to be confused with Ruby) maintains her composure and explains the great dangers the party faced, but thinks better of mentioning quicklings. There could well be some in the crowd right now!

Naithi embraces the performer role, and gives a detailed account of the party's adventures - if not a little embellished. The crowd love it! She draws chuckles when she mentions her aversion to death, and there are gasps of shock when she mentions giants. The audience give their full attention as she talks about turtles, and there is a sense of awe at the mention of dragons. When she returns to Freedom's Landing she may even be able to have a career as an orator!

Nightingale compliments Naithi on the story telling, and doesn't have much to add other than to point out the lack of style shown by the giants. She flicks her hair behind her ear, and draws a wolf-whistle from someone in the crowd. This elicits giggles from some in the audience.

Sir Cuddlesworth melodramatically pretends to be repeatedly interrupted as he attempts to respond to his love. When he finally has a chance to speak, he elaborates on their pursuit of Captain Purplepants, the many drinks required and finally leaving the tavern triumphant. He draws the expected laughter.

It's when Sir Cuddlesworth concludes his tale with a grand bow towards the fey woman that he draws the biggest response, with plenty of 'awws' and 'ooohs' and polite applause.

By all account the party are putting on a good show!

Ruby can't help but laugh, and makes his way to the edge of the stage to have a word with the man who seems to be in charge.

The man with the papers grabs Ruby's elbow and pulls him completely out of the stage light, then speaks to him in a hushed voice. "Wait, you're not the Pipperwick troop?! But, we sent for them days ago! Who are you?" he looks momentarily confused, but then looks back to the stage before answering Ruby's question about what exactly must go on. The little man puffs out his chest and raises his head. "The show, good sir! The show must always go on! While I admit, things have gone somewhat off script, the crowd are enjoying the performance. And why wouldn't they! This will go down as my greatest masterpiece!"

He can tell Ruby is still a little confused. "Look, this is the final scene and we're so close to the climactic finish. Just a few more lines and then the big ending! Surely you wouldn't want to disappoint so many theatre lovers and deprive them of seeing the ending to the most magnificent play to ever grace the stage?"

Movement draws the party's attention to the right of stage, where a tiny fey, bedecked in a pair of comically exaggerated purple pants and sporting an eyepatch, bursts onto the scene with flamboyant flair.

Waving a prop rapier high above his head, the tiny fey exudes an air of theatrical gusto. His presence on the stage is an instant show-stealer, and his antics command the spotlight as he parades amidst the jeers and mock protests of the audience.

"Captain Purplepants!" The fey princess exclaims, her voice laced with melodramatic shock as she clutches her chest with a flourish. Her reaction is a charming blend of surprise and feigned distress.

"Mwah ha haaa! Yes, it's me! Captain Purplepants!" The small fey's voice rings out with theatrical flair, his tone dripping with exaggerated villainy as he delivers his lines with unabashed gusto. "Did your champion think he had bested me?! Drinking? Never!" Captain Purplepants continues, his voice a gleeful crescendo of defiance. His words are punctuated by wild gesticulations and exaggerated flourishes of his prop rapier.

What's more, he has spent most of his life trying to convince others that he is not some trained animal to go capering about to the amusement of an audience: and here he is right in the thick of it!

The badgerkin lets out a loud sigh. "Fine! We help you and then you help us with our problem. Maybe your next script will be an Actor's Nightmare, where the main person is the only one who doesn't know what play is happening around them."

He scampers back on 'stage', counting on the dramatic arrival of Captain Purplepants and Ruby's twin to have covered his absense and return. "They were expecting someone else and want us to finish." Ruby knows he stated the obvious, but the unfamiliarity of the situation is making him feel five steps behind everyone else.

It was the most amazing Bachelor Party this realm has ever seen! My feathered friend is the greatest Best Man ever!

Lothlo turns back to face Captain Purple Pants.

I think it's time for the next verse of of Willowmoon's song

Weeeeeeeellll,

As I stumbled home on a Tuesday night, as drunk as drunk could be,
I saw a pirate outside my door, where my old ducky should be
Well, I called my love and I said to her: "Will you kindly tell to me
Who's the drunk with the purple pants, where my old ducky should be?"

Ah, you're my love, but you're drunk, you silly old fool, still you can not see
That pirate's the priest that my mother sent, to marry you to me!

Ruby, sceptical and resigned, agrees to help with the play in exchange for assistance with their own problem, and returns to the stage.

Berotha, feigning horror, reacts to Captain Purplepants' appearance.

Naithi, seizing the opportunity for a drink-off, hands tankards to Captain Purplepants and Sir Cuddlesworth, transforms the performance into a musical, kicking off a spirited tune with an infectious chorus. Nightingale and Naithi energize the audience, and Lothlo chimes in with the second verse. The result is a resounding triumph! Purplepants and the Fey princess enthusiastically clap and sing along, as if the entire spectacle had been meticulously rehearsed. The entire auditorium echoes with the joyous sound of thousands of fey harmonizing to the refrain, "You're drunk!"

Zazu provides some comic relief in the background, attempting a dramatic charge at Purplepants and tumbling with Boyo. Berotha helps them up, humming along with the song.

The final note of the song resonates, triggering an eruption of cheers, applause, and whistles from the delighted crowd.

Purplepants gives a bow and allows the crowd several minutes to settle before he continues. "Enough!" Captain Purplepants' violently throws his mug to the ground, as his theatrical proclamation echoes through the amphitheater "I can bear these insults no longer! The only way..." He momentarily appears lost in thought, a furrowed brow marring his comically exaggerated countenance. A whispered exchange with the side of the stage follows as he seeks guidance on his forgotten line.

His expression shifts from confusion to renewed confidence. Raising his prop rapier high above his head, he declares with renewed gusto, "The only way this can be settled is with a fight to the death!" His voice reverberates through the air, each word enunciated with a melodramatic emphasis that underscores the dramatic nature of his proposal.

With theatrical finesse, he twirls, spins, and leaps, his prop rapier flashing in the spotlight as he mimics a series of elaborate combat manoeuvres. His interactions are a blend of exaggerated mimicry and comedic flair, each feigned attack punctuated by exaggerated gasps and dramatic dodges.

The tiny fey who stands no higher than Berotha's kneecaps, stabs and slashes at each party member, never coming close to actually landing an attack, and then finally halts beside Lothlo.

The stage crew frantically gesture towards the other party members, signalling for you all to fall down.

Purplepants' prop rapier is poised in midair, his demeanour a blend of exaggerated bravado and mock intensity. "Now it is just the two of us!" he exclaims, his voice ringing with theatrical drama as he fixates his attention upon Sir Cuddlesworth. "Do you have any last words?"

A member of the stage crew rushes on stage and thrusts a small wooden sword into Lothlo's hand, before quickly dashing back off stage. In Lothlo's hands the sword is no bigger than a dagger.

One signals a 'stabbing motion' to Lothlo, indicating he is to 'kill' Purplepants.

Lothlo waves the sword around in a flourish, spanking the fey on the rear end a number of times in a mock duel, before delivering a elaborate "death blow" with the wooden sword sliding in the opening under Purplepants' his armpit.
I had hoped you would be by my side on the day that I wed my true love, and instead you betrayed me and brought pain and destruction with you. Tell me, why did you do it?

DM RobC - "Oh no! How awful!"
Tuesday November 14th, 2023 2:36:17 AM

Berotha and Ruby take the hint and drop to the stage floor. It's an unusual situation for the 'twins' to be in. Zazu and Boyo might just be enjoying the whole thing!

Lothlo delivers the fatal strike in retribution for the death of his trusty crew. But why? Why did it come to this?

With a flourish of theatrical prowess, Captain Purplepants dramatically reacts to Lothlo's feigned strike. He emits a loud groan, his hand clutching at an imaginary wound with an air of exaggerated agony. The audience watches in rapt attention as he staggers back, his voice quivering with melodramatic intensity. "Arrgh! You always were the better man... brother!" The revelation elicits an audible gasp of surprise from the enchanted fey spectators.

With a final flourish, Captain Purplepants collapses to the floor, his body splayed in a dramatic sprawl. The fey crowd erupts in a mixture of applause, laughter, and astonishment.

With the flair of a dramatic climax, the fey princess descends from the wooden castle tower. As she reaches Lothlo, she throws her arms around his neck in a heartfelt embrace.

The fey princess then lifts her head, her gaze locking with that of her champion's. With a playful twinkle in her eyes, she positions her face tantalizingly close to his, the illusion of a passionate kiss.

The audience responds with a symphony of cheers and applause.

Breaking 'the kiss', the fey princess steps forward and raises her arms in a graceful arc, encouraging the party and the entire cast to take a bow. Purplepants leaps to his feet and goes to help Zazu and Ruby. "Come, take a bow. Take a bow"

The fey spectators burst into a resounding chorus of cheers, their applause standing as a testament to the stellar performance that has just unfolded. Even the stage crew joins in, and you catch sight of the elderly fey gentleman wiping away a tear.

Nightingale, Zazu, and Berotha participate in the bows and handshakes, with Berotha managing the balance between feigned hostilities and friendliness.

Additional fey characters are making their entrance onto the stage. Judging by their costumes, it's evident that they are part of the cast from preceding acts. Among them is a fey woman attired as an enormous sandwich, another adorned in a costume resembling a pink 7-legged spider, and yet another who appears to be a walking disco ball. Those are just a few. Fey in more and more ridiculous costumes keep appearing, until you share the stage with dozens upon dozens of them. It is quite crowded and a little difficult to move, especially for the like of Berotha. It would be far too easy to step on a diminutive fey and cause an incident.

Lothlo expresses enthusiasm, shaking Purplepants' hand and complimenting his performance, eagerly anticipating learning the duck's story.

Purplepants casually wipes the sweat from his brow. "The duck? I think that was from Act 72. The squeaking of the duck was being used to summon whimsywobbles and turn them into whiskerwuffles". He looks curiously at Lothlo. "It was all there in the script. Didn't you read it? And you were supposed to bring the props with you. Good thing the crew were prepared. Regardless, the show is done and everything went well. I do hope they have some food at the afterparty. I'm famished!"

The conversation is interrupted by calls from the fey gentleman. "GATHER 'ROUND! Gather 'round, everyone, gather 'round!" The fey man gestures for all to assemble in front of him. He places his hand upon his heart. "Your performances tonight were not just admirable; they were truly magnificent, splendid, and beyond! Why, you all were magnificently splendiferous!" He briefly removes his glasses to wipe a tear from his eye. "'The Remarkable Adventures of Lady Tickle-twirl: A Whimsical Fey Odyssey Illuminating the Pathways of Joyful Wonderment' will be remembered as the greatest show ever to grace our humble stage! For that, you have this old man's eternal gratitude. Take a moment to celebrate, but be sure to get an early night. Tomorrow's matinee promises an even larger audience!" He leads the group in a round of applause.

Ruby finally gets a chance to ask a question or two of the old man. He presents the orange glow berry, emphasizing its discovery in a nest of Quicklings during their encounter.

"Quicklings. Bah! Nasty folk. I won't tell you what they did to our practise stage, suffice to say the stains will never be removed and our choreographer is missing a foot" He shakes his head as he recalls the scene but then notices the glowing fruit. "Ah! A lumina berry. Torm - do you know Torm? - Torm was here earlier looking for some. Nice fellow. His appearance in Act 103 really added to the star power of the show."
