DM Mark - "That could have been much worse." Tuesday December 12th, 2023 1:32:12 AM
The Petals are glad to be past that murky lake. They assess their current position and decide to move further down the tunnel. Mak takes the lead and Tsak brings up the rear of the group.
As they go, the heroes keep a sharp eye out. Beech’s Dancing Lights bob along with you as you go. You find the tunnel is about 10’ wide and about 8’ tall. It winds for about half a mile, and you’re pretty sure you’ve ventured outside the village above. The sharp eyed among you are the first to notice that the further you travel the longer and darker the shadows seem to get. It’s almost as if the dark presses in and light struggles to push back the darkness. Soon, this becomes apparent to all, and it’s unsettling.
Everyone starts to feel … something. Is it sadness, emptiness, a tug on your soul? Everyone needs to make a DC 13 Will Save. If you fail:Highlight to display spoiler: { a sense of impending doom begins to affect you and you have a -1 to attack rolls and saving throws.}
Eventually, the earthy, metallic smell of the damp tunnel changes a bit. In addition, you begin to smell a pungent smell not unlike the grease used in machinery and metal working. Or maybe like lamp oil. Soon, the tunnel floor becomes more damp and you see what appears to be an oily liquid covering the floor going forward. Exploring this, you find that it’s actually water covered in a thin layer of black oil. You can see the tunnel stretches forward, but the floor is covered in liquid. Assuming the floor does not drop away, you’d guess this oily water is about 2’ deep up ahead, though you can’t really see through to the floor to know for sure.
What do you do?

DM Mark - "We're doomed..." Wednesday December 13th, 2023 1:10:30 AM
The heroes are trotting along the damp tunnel, but an oily substance on some water ahead stops them in their tracks.
Mak waits for his friends to propose a solution. Panzer recalls his last foray into murky water and wants none of it this time. He thinks this must be a trap, but worries more that the oily water might be a distraction from something worse.
Falco dreads the thought of being covered in oil, and wonders if the oil is flammable. Beech is intrigued and seems ready to light anything on fire.
Elyas casts Detect Magic. He does not detect any magic associated with the water or the oil, or anywhere in range except for what the Petals themselves have.
Kiwina watches.
Aytonom says, "We're doomed but we probably don't want to torch the oil till we know what is on the other end."
Some careful experimentation with the oil here suggests that this oil is somewhat flammable. That is, it can be lit on fire with exposure to a decent fire source (torch, fireball, etc.), but it is not so volatile that fire causes it to explode.
Knowledge Dungeoneering DC 0: Intentionally burning this oil off in this enclosed space is likely to not only be smoky, but it would also use up all the oxygen here, rendering the area uninhabitable for a while.

DM Mark - "I think we have to know it is a risk and push on." Thursday December 14th, 2023 2:28:36 AM
Everyone looks at the oily water ahead. The discovery that the oil can be lit on fire causes concern.
Mak suggests not venturing forward, suggesting that perhaps it could be lit on fire and the Petals could just come back in a week or so.
Beech is shaken at the thought of pressing ahead.
Ayotnom suggests prestidigitation could be used later to remove the oil on anyone.
Kiwina wonders why no one has considered flying over the oil to scout ahead.
Falco worries that simply lighting the oil here could destroy or kill something unintended. He sees no other recourse than to press on.
Panzer agrees with Falco that the only way is forward. He admits moving forward may be foolish, but decides to scout ahead anyway.
Panzer moves slowly into the water. It’s only about 2’ deep as he forges ahead, but still that’s pretty deep for the little badger. He worries as he begins to get deeper, but he soon realizes that it’s just some minor variations on the floor here, and it simply ranges between 1.5-2.5 feet deep as he goes. He scouts ahead for aways, and it’s fortunate he can see in the dark, because there is no light source here. He soon finds that all but his head is covered in a black oil. Yech.
After several minutes, the tunnel widens into a larger area, still covered in about 2’ of this oily water, and at the far side is a grey wall. In the middle of this grey wall is a strange, metal circle about 2’ across. The circle is covered in strange symbols and has a button in an oval on top. (The map link below shows this metal circle and symbols.)
The DM presumes that Panzer will return and report his findings, and that seeing that Panzer actually did come back, the entire party will press forward in the oily water to see this grey wall and the large metallic disc.
You look at the metal circle, trying to puzzle out the symbols there.

Based on Panzers observation Tsak has another look. With Elyas' help (he passed the linguistics check for all of us, if I read the DM post right) he's able to narrow it down.
Yeah, you're right, the 'K' is missing. Does that mean anything to anyone?
DM Mark - "High what?" Friday December 15th, 2023 1:08:24 AM
Elyas is not happy trudging through the oily water. Upon reaching the grey wall and the symbols in the metal circle he asks for quiet as he calls on his heroic mental reserves to remember his tutelage in High Woldian from his younger days. (Wow, it took me a minute to understand Ben’s puzzle for me about seeing a Four.... Zero..... Four. Nice reference. Also, I fixed the links - sorry about that.)
After leading his friends back to this place, Panzer listens to Elyas. He reaches up to see if that squiggly line at the top of the whole design slides back and forth. He wonders why there are only 25 letters here instead of 26. Elyas may recognize that squiggly line as a word in High Woldian (now that the DM fixed the links.)
Tsak kindly offers to carry Falco on his shoulders to avoid the oily water on his feathers. Falco gladly take him up on the offer. Once they get to the strange grey wall, Falco puzzles over the device. Tsak listens to Elyas explain things, and he notices that this High Woldian alphabet seems to be missing the letter “K”. Elyas would be able to explain that in the High Woldian phonetic alphabet, C and K are the same symbol. This also answers Panzer’s question about there only being 25 letters here instead of the 26 in the common tongue.
Beech recognizes the script as being High Woldian, but laments not paying more attention to his mother’s efforts to teach him more. He uses Prestidigitation to clean where the oil has splashed up on his friends, but since everyone is still standing in 2’ deep oily water here, he knows it’s just a matter of time before they’re a mess again.
Ayontom also recognizes the High Woldian scripts, but is unable to puzzle out more. Kiwina is in the same boat.
Mak isn’t sure what this whole “High Woldian” thing is about. Maybe oil fumes here are putting the “high”’ in High Woldian. He takes up a rear position to stand guard.

DM Mark - "Good thinking, lets try it." 4d6=14 ; Monday December 18th, 2023 1:39:16 AM
Falco looks at the High Woldian symbols, but can’t make heads or tails of them.
Elyas looks at the elaborate metal plate. At the very top is a symbol he believes represents water. He wonders if just touching the letters for water is enough?
Panzer worries a wrong move might flood the chamber with water, but he agrees with Elyas.
Beech has trouble with letters, so he focuses on cleaning oil off where he can.
Kiwina thinks there must be more to this than just the water symbol. Indeed, as Kiwina looks he can see that what appears to be the symbol for water actually rests at the top of this whole thing. Perhaps the symbol for water is only part of this. What is he missing in all this?
Ayotnom points out that the alphabet is missing the letter K, but Elyas already explained that it is missing because in the High Woldian phonetic alphabet, C and K are the same symbol.
Tsak decides to give it a try. With Elyas’ guidance, Tsak presses the High Woldian symbols corresponding to W-A-T-E-R. As he does so, the pressed letters glow one-by-one until those 5 symbols he pressed are glowing. Nothing seems to happen, and those 5 symbols remain glowing. After some puzzling this out, it would probably occur to Tsak that there is a button there in that oval above the circle that contains the High Woldian alphabet. He presses the button in the oval. Electricity arcs through his finger and up his arm! He takes 14 points of damage from an electric shock! Having made his guess and pressed that button, the 5 letters he had pressed now stop glowing.
Tasks eyes are wide open from that electric shock, and the others can see that Tsak’s hair seems to be standing straight out from his head, which is a new look for the half-orc.
The baleful symbol sits on the grey wall as it did before.
Examining the grey wall, you’re not quite sure what it is really. It’s not stone, and you don’t think it really looks like metal. The large symbol does appear to be metal. You’re just not sure about the rest of that grey wall. It simply seems to be a large, flat expanse of grey material with a large metal object in the middle.
As noted before, even if your character may not know enough to help, you as a player are welcome to help figure this out. Beech sees what happened to Tsak. He carefully studies the symbols on the wall. He thinks he sees something more. He quickly types in B-L-O-O-D and presses the button. ZAP! The liontaur’s arm is momentarily numb as electricity shocks him for 14 damage.
Tsak was ready to try another word, but Beech beats him to it. And like Tsak, Beech also gets zapped for his efforts.
Elyas joins Kiwina in looking around for more symbols here. As he does so, he touches the grey wall, and he can feel an electric shock - like that from static electricity. It’s not enough to damage him, but there is energy in that wall.
As Falco watches folks get zapped by electric shocks, the wise little owl has an idea - what if you use something like the end of an arrow to press that button?
Panzer checks the other walls as well. There are stone walls here, but the rough hewn walls stand out from the plain, smooth grey wall that holds the large metals disc and symbols. Also, the stone walls lack the buzz of electricity that can be felt in the grey wall.
Kiwina remains focused on the symbols on the grey wall in front of him.
As noted before, even if your character may not know enough to help, you as a player are welcome to help figure this out. Introduction - you can scroll through specific pages by clicking “next” on each page. Also, on the upper right is a High Woldian Dictionary where you can see words that are made up from a combination of the phonetic symbols of the High Woldian language. High Woldian Alphabet - at the bottom of this page is the Common Tongue alphabet as it is represented by one or more High Woldian phonetic symbols. So these symbols essentially represent a way to translate the Common Tongue letters into High Woldian, and vice versa.

DM Mark - Four Doors Wednesday December 20th, 2023 1:55:25 AM
(I’m sorry I missed your post Hugh. I was working on the DM post when you posted that, so I missed it. I should have checked back again.)
Ayotnom mentions that he sees a larger symbol at work here. There is the symbol for water and life that represent blood. And Ayotnom can see that the circle, representing life, added to that for blood give you a symbol for Woldsblood! All with Elyas linguistics help, of course. Kiwina and Beech agree.
Beech is a bit embarrassed he didn’t think of it first. Panzer threatens to tell Beech’s mom.
His companions agree. Falco again suggests using something other than a finger incase there is another shock.
Mak offers to input the word with Tsak’s encouragement, but Ayontom reaches over to input the letter and pushes the button.
With that, the entire grey wall disappears!
(You guys did really well with this puzzle! Hero Point to Ayotnom for being the first to figure out and try the answer (even if the DM did miss the post.))
With the wall gone, the heroes can see that there is a larger room before them. And perhaps best of all, there are steps leading up out of that awful oily water. Seems like you’ve been traipsing in that stuff for a while, and at least the lower two feet of your body has water and sticky oil clinging to it.
It’s still dark in here, and you need your light sources to see. As you look around, you see there are 4 doors in the walls of this large room.

Ayotnom is much smarter than your average minotaur training in both the arcane arts and the school of dueling. As such he was able to figure out the riddle and moves to quickly get out of the oily water.
Tsak sniffs the air and studies the room, carefully moving around (Survival/Perception) to try to determine how its used and maybe who uses it. Then he goes to stand next to Mak, because that's where the trouble will emanate from.
DM Mark - Tsak goes to stand next to Mak, because that's where the trouble will emanate from. Thursday December 21st, 2023 2:25:44 AM
Ever watchful, Mak exits the water and then circles this new room or landing with its four doors. The floor seems to be solid stone, though it’s a bit slippery at first until he wears off the oil that got on the soles of his boots as he stepped up out of the water.
In fact, this slippery effect is there for everyone initially.
Elyas congratulates Ayontom. As he regards the four doors, he wonders if any of his friends can determine which doors may have had more traffic or use.
Ayotnom is glad of Elyas’ thanks, and is duly proud of his efforts.
Panzer is careful not to leave more tracks as he tries to determine if others have been through here. Kiwina and Tsak also look for tracks and try to determine which doors may have had more use.
Panzer, Kiwina and Tsak can clearly see Mak’s tracks. But what’s really odd is that they see no sign of other tracks. In fact, the floor here is oddly clean. No oil, no tracks, no dust, no nothing. Only the residual moisture evident in this place generally. Certainly, if anyone exited the water here, there would at least be oily tracks, but all they see is clean stone. It’s almost as if no one has been through here, though there is not even the usual buildup of dust and debris. Weird.
Beech uses Prestidigitation to clean everyone from the oily mess. Everyone except Panzer. Beech manages to subtly put more of the mess on the little badger, and while he has a good bluff roll, it is hard to hide that as Beech cleans the others, that Panzer is more dirty. Beech may try to convince Panzer it certainly wasn’t him, but, well, Panzer’s no dope. (I think maybe you were thinking more of Sleight of Hand, but I can’t really think of a skill that could hide what Beech is doing with a spell. “What? You became more dirty while I was casting spells? No, certainly wasn’t me. How could you ever think such a thing?”)

From your DM - As you know, we are entering the Yuletide slowdown as we do every year about this time. While technically, the slowdown runs from Saturday 12/23 through Sunday 1/7, part of the slowdown is making sure we are not in combat or any other perilous situations. Now, I’m certainly not implying these doors would lead to peril, but just in case, it might be best to not open those doors just yet. And besides, your characters have been going for quite a while now. The seemingly clean nature of this place suggests this might not be the worst place to rest for a bit. The oily water is replaced by a pool of clear water. Soon, the ground here is covered in a soft, white snow, accumulating faster than it seemed to fall. But though you see snow, you don't feel cold.
Standing amongst you is a figure some of you may remember. She wears an exquisite close fit green and gold gown with a high collar, and she moves with an unnatural grace. She is very shapely and attractive. Large green emeralds hang from her upswept ears, and her brilliant red is caught up in an intricate style and topped with a crown of live twigs. Those that met her briefly on Bridge Island may remember she called herself Ailleann. You also remember her at the time as both beautiful and somewhat dangerous.
"Happy Solstice my dashing and accomplished heroes. It is … good to see some of you again. I see some are missing and others are new. Such is the way of adventurers. I was asked to come her to bring you Yuletide greetings. Oh, and what is a Yuletide Celebration without a yule log?" With that, she gestures and you see a cheery fire. Though the snow was not cold, this fire does seem to give off a pleasant warmth.
As Tsak looks up, worried about accumulating smoke in this place, he sees the ceiling has been replaced by a starry sky.
She begins to walk among the party. Mak catches her eye, and she runs a hand along his broad shoulders as she moves, giving him a predatory half smile. She touches Panzer and the oily mess on him vanishes. "So valiant a little beastfolk should look the part, don't you think?" She walks past Ayotnym, Kiwina, and Beech. "Lovely to see your little group still represents all the Tauric people, though some of you heroes are different this time." To Falco she nods and says, "Should you ever wish to change allegiances little bird-man, Mabb would welcome you into her flock." She nods to Elyas, "Ah wizard. You try to be non-descript, but your arcane power gives you away." Finally, she stops by Tsak. A sultry smile crosses her face as she says, "You I'm tempted to take back as a little snack. Alas, that is not allowed. Not this time, anyway."
At the looks of astonishment and surprise, she replies, "Oh my dears, you're still where you were. Only, I thought you might find better scenery more restful. I offer little more than a brief respite. The walls still exist beyond those trees, and I certainly wouldn't venture into that water if I were you, pleasant though it may appear for now."

As the Petals wake from a well deserved rest, they find the beautiful fey woman has left. As you rub the sleep from your eyes, what had appeared to be a forest surrounding you fades. The snow here recedes and disappears, and even the campfire seems to waiver before it vanishes. You're left to wonder if all that was ever here.
No, you're pretty sure that fey woman was real. And a bit disturbing. Those that met her briefly on Bridge Island may remember she called herself Ailleann back then.
But at least you all feel rested. And something else - any damage you had from before seems to have healed.
Panzer is surprised to find that the oil has been cleaned from his armor and fur. He thinks for a moment that Beech might have relented and finally cleaned him while he slept, but looking over it appears that Beech is just waking up as well.

DM Mark - "Who was that lady? She was really here right?" Tuesday January 9th, 2024 1:53:01 AM
The Petals look around, and some seem a bit unsure if the forest scene and that fey woman were just a dream. Tsak, Elyas, Kiwina, Falco and Mak remember her from a time on Bridge Island. She called herself Ailleann then, and she gave one of their party (Son Imod) a cursed item that began slowly sapping his strength. She offered for all to return with her to the Fey Realm and the royal courts there, though everyone wisely declined.
Tsak thinks it's probably a good thing that the fey woman is gone. He goes over to listen as one of the doors. He hears nothing behind that door.
Elyas awakes well rested. He'd guess that he easily slept a full 8 hours, but maybe more (Assume 10 hours for any spell durations in effect. It's probably been about 15 hours since he left that house with the homicidal furniture.) In any event, he finds that he is able to memorize new spells.
Beech looks at the campfire where he was trying to cook food. The campfire was an illusion, as was the snow and the trees. Any food he had out would still be there though.
Mak stands, refreshed from his rest. He wanderers aloud if the Petals are too deep to teleport, and asks Panzer if he were once a dwarf.
Panzer is more focused on the fey woman. Who was she? Would she prove to be trouble? Some in the party may inform him that she was a bit of trouble in the past, and any deals made with the fey can be tricky.
Kiwina examines the door nearest him. He listens and thinks he hears something. Maybe a sort of crackling sound? He notices the door and even the floor is unusually clean and devoid of any marks or dust or dirt.
Ayotnom casts Detect Magic and looks at all the doors. He notices there is a faint magic emanating from the door where Kiwina stands - conjuration magic he thinks. None of the other doors seem to radiate magic, though all the doors seem similar and similarly clean.

Elyas (Ben A.) (95/97 HP | AC: 21; Touch:15; Flat: 18; CMD:15) Tuesday January 9th, 2024 9:05:48 AM
Elyas spends some time reading his spell book and preparing for the day. He casts Mage Armor and Darkvision on himself as he does most days.
Then he joins the rest of the group, ready to go through one of the doors.
So we have one magical door. Trapped maybe? I think maye we should start with one of the plain doors

But more importantly HOW are we gonna do this? If you're all gonna try to squeeze thru that door to fight something in a narrow hallway on the other side then I'm telling you now I'm just gonna sit here and laugh at y'all. Maybe we spread out in here and take it in turns for 1 person to open 1 door at a time and see what comes thru at us. Anyway, it's just a thought.
Tsak moves over next to Mak and grabs a bit of jerky from his pack. He chews slowly while he waits for something to happen.
DM Mark - "OK, so what's the plan?" Wednesday January 10th, 2024 1:51:50 AM
(To simplify things, I added letters a, b, c, and d to the four doors here.)
Elyas prepares his spells for the day and casts Mage Armor and Darkvision. He hear Ayotnom say there is a faint Conjuration magic associated with door "b", and that makes him want to avoid it.
Falco examines the door where Kiwina is, but he realizes Spellcraft will not tell him much without having cast Detect Magic first.
Panzer tells Mak he was born a beastfolk. Still, his skill as a minder tells him they're maybe 100' or more underground. He also looks at the door where Kiwina is, his Spellcraft skill will not tell him much without having cast Detect Magic first. Then he moves over near Tsak and listens at that door. All seems silent listening at door "c".
Tsak suggests some tactics and moves near Mak.
Ayotnym announces there is a faint Conjuration magic coming from door "b". (To clarify, the door does not radiate magic, but there seems to be magic beyond it. Conjuration can be quite a lot of things.)
Beech grabs his bow and waits to see what others will do.
The air is damp here, with the distinct mineraly smell of wet stone. Other than that, it's quiet here.

As they decide on a door Falco gives a suggestion about Mak's question. "The beast folk they are most familiar with is me and I was a halfing before the warper-sar got involved in my life. Given the context its a normal question." on the door discussion he thinks. "I could cast dispel magic on the door, it is unlikely the magic on it is meant to make our day better."
