GM Jon - Day 5 - "The Old Tales are the Best"

OOC: Was that temple something I had a hand in, or before my time ... I like creepy temples, if you don't die exploring them, they usually have cool stuff, like, well, hmmmm, floating candles? I have the original info on the Frozen Chapel, it came out in an old Dragon Magazine ...

Torry dipped back into her senses to determine if anything was magical or evil ... she detects neither, although the dolls have all fallen apart since the end of the battle. She seeks her "doll" out and makes sure it is destroyed.

Mortimer, with his ears beginning to stop ringing, shares with the group that the dolls had an aura of "undeath" around them. However, Torry has determined that the dolls are no longer enchanted

Gnubert offers to heal Mortimer, and then explores the body on the altar. This is the remains of an adult male, one that looks familiar, its possibly one of the farrier's in town. Gnubert is able to determine that "Jack" was alive when his skin was skillfully removed, and that magic was used to finish him off through the removal of his heart, and several other organs. The skin that was taken, is what was used to make the dolls.

Ash, while not religious, makes a sign of faith as he approaches the wood golem closest to him.

Drack approaches his doll and destroys it as well. Then prompts the party to "heal up so we can move on"

Loryn suggests gathering up the dolls and "burning them with the body on the altar" and begins to gather fuel from the wood golems.

Ash and Loryn convince Manolo to help them gather wood. The three, as they are sifting through the golems find some interesting pieces that stand out: The backbones of the two golem's are the equivalent of Darkwood Staffs; 40 small branches that can be used to make arrows, and four pieces of the "ribs" that are large enough to make wands with - all this Darkwood is MW Quality, and thereby enchantable

When the party has gathered sufficient wood, placed everything on the altar and caught it on fire ... they smell pipe smoke, the same they smelled when talking to the Old Woman ... then they hear someone clear their throat.

Spinning and preparing to defened themselves, the party finds themselves facing the old lady storyteller. She is smoking her pipe, and has tears running down her face. "I wished I could have saved those people, and the kiddos, but my hands are tied, thus why I set you on this path knowing what you would find, and with the faith that you would be able to face the evil and defeat it." She takes a large puff on her pipe, and then continues "My time is limited, but here is what I can share at this time. All this was done by my three daughters who hide near or within the Frozen Chapel. Their evil, it blocks my sight. The prowess that you have shown here means you may be able to end their wicked ways. I can start you on your journey. The only way to summon my daughters out into the open is to use the Guardians’ Pyramid. Unfortunately, this is all I am allowed to share at this time." She makes a mark on the ground beneath her and then fades from view.

Torryn nodded and then shook her head. She really didn't have much of a clue what was happening. Was it three hags that they sought? A coven would be tricky. They'd likely know of The Argentum's approach and prepare; so being watchful was parramount.

She also recognised the quality and usefulness of the would - being a fletcher, but didn't see how any of it could be carried away. They needed to move swiftly and be unburdened in their moving. Moreover, she wasn't she that she could ever trust an arrow made from such a thing.

"Spot and I will move on ahead and keep an eye out for traps and trouble." She offered.

Listening as best as he can Loryn nods in agreement with Drack and steps over to the symbol to see what he can make of it. Nothing comes to the gnomes mind. The smell that still hangs in the air and the repurcussions of recent events are too distracting

"From the sound of things, we'll find the people and the hags at this Frozen temple thingy. So we should probably just keep going. Gnubert looks at the old lady and shakes his head, "I knew, well felt as though we were being pushed in a direction. I didn't know it was this direction but it is evident we are needed. We should keep following the trail so to speak, and get to the gettin to."

Drack and Loryn move to the spot where the old woman was standing. Neither are pleased with the recent events. The dirt under her feet has been disturbed, and the trail marking symbol for "treasure" has been rubbed into the dirt next to the disturbed spot.

Torry mounts Spot and moves to scout ahead, adding that she can "make arrows with the darkwood sticks."

Manolo looks at the battlefield and the pyre, and shakes his head asking if anyone "has a clue what to do?"

Gnubert watches as the Old Lady vanishes, simply stating, "it's felt like we were being pushed in a direction, and now we are needed somewhere along our path."

Digging into the ground is easy, and barely a foot down Drack finds a thick femur, probably from an elk (wrote elf three times, sigh). The femur has been scrimshawed by someone who knows their craft. The scenes are aquatic in nature/style ... mainly wind, ships, cresting waves, and winking mermaidens. Drack can tell that the upper end can be removed. As it isn't "evil" or "magical" or "necromantic" in nature, Drack opens it. Inside is a map. Drawn on aged parchment. The inks used were probably a variety of colors at one time, but now they are all a dark blue verging on black.

With all of y'all looking at it, a weeks journey towards the coast, the map lays out a trail. The problem is, where the map ends, is under the sea...

"A wand would be good." Smiled Torryn. Her access to Fey magic would permit her to use such a thing, albeit she had no idea how to make one herself.

As to the map; it was hard top stay positive. The last time that they'd gone under the waves had been a struggle. Sure it was pretty, but it seemed inimical to her fighting style and she certainly couldn't use her bow. Still, there was no changing matters and more importantly, there were people to rescue. So she swiftly remounted Spot and set off along the trail.

Drack looks at the map info. "Seriously? water again? i am sick of water. Either way, we best get a move on. Heal up and mount up. let's make some good time. Lives hang in the balance. We move quick during the day following the map, and rest at night. No time to go back for water breathing rings. Can any of you do that spell, or do we need to go back for the rings?"

"Honestly, I don't think we can spare the time to head back. Like Dracky says, we should press on straight away. There are lives at steak - hopefully, not literally. We'll just have to figure something out if it comes to a watery expedition."

OOC: Crap, I forgot to post ... the wife is spring cleaning the house so we dropped off 12 bags of clothes last night, and will be making a second Goodwill run here shortly

OOC2: Thanks for the info on that adventure Drack

IC: In general, the party all groans as the map display's a watery end.

Mortimer mentions he is still "Pulling seaweed out of his pants.

Gnubert has a more positive reaction, sharing that the party should be "Prepared for underwater fighting after their last adventure."

Manolo urges the party begin moving as the "longer we linger the better chances are someone will be sacrificed.

Torry agress with Manolo that "pressing forward needs to happen" and adds further that "we'll figure something out for the watery part."

Drack suggests that the party "get healed up, and mounted so we can leave."

Ash offers to make Torry a wand from the Darkwood they found.

Loryn mounts their steed, ready to move forward.

Moving in a NE direction, the party's week-long trek is dreary. The woods they travel through are all showing signs of sickness. Very little in the way of foodstuffs can be gathered, forcing y'all to survive on rations. One other issue presents itself through the trek, your sleep is fitfully as your dreams all take on negative connotations showing this region bleak and empty of both forests, animals, and people.

After a week of dreariness. You reach the coast. For once the sun is out, and the coastline looks pristine. Before you, and on your path is an old fisherman's hut. With the state it is in, no one has been here in a few decades, however, the building retains it's sturdiness against the winds.

Loryn was unsure at best if any of this was a good idea. The gnome decided he would be along for the ride and see if he could keep the younger folk alive. We have no boat, no means of breathing and thus spell casting, fighting well or anything. Not to mention we will run out of food in about 8 days But each morning he would get up, slap a 'everything is fine' look on his face and do what he could

Manolo keeps quiet as he feels something weird.
His thoughts are more negative and he prefers to stay quiet for the time being.
"We might not find them after all, the journey itself might kill them"
Sometimes he voices a complete refusal to continue "Maybe we should head back...right?"

When they finely arrive at the sea-side Manolo feels relief and feels better.
"might have a chance to save them after all"
"Shall we investigate this place". He says confidently and beings to explore.

Gnubert takes teh journey in stride. The cleric tries not to dwell on what maybe happenning to the captives, and instead plan and prepare for the upcoming battles. Gnubert continually thinks of the number of spells he has each day he can use for protection, underwater breathing, and offense.

Mortimer isn't too talkative during the days and nights on the trail. As they approach the coastline, he prepares by fortifying his body with the powers of unlife.

(Mortimer casts False Life, twice because he can't stand natural 1's. 11 temporary hit points. Duration: 6 hours.)

When they come to the fisherman's hut, he gives it a good looking over. He casts Detect Magic and he examines the area. Who knows what is hidden under the sands. (Perception: 22)

(Mortimer casts Detect Magic. Range: 60'. Duration: Concentration, up to 6 minutes.)

He looks back with a concerned look and says, "This may sound dark ta some of ya ... but be prepared that they've already turned the youngin's against us. They've 'ad a fare amount of time ta work their magiks."

Torryn was always a naturally optimistic person and despite the dour terrain and bleak outlook ahead she did her best to soothe Spot's unease and remain cheerful. The dreams were unsettling and she rather wished that she'd brought a dreamcatcher with her. Her faith in the protection of her gods remained unwavering. She was a Sacred Dancer and had a duty to lift others' flagging spirits. dancing on a horse's back wasn't easy though, so she rode mostly in silence as she considered varoius kicks and tricks that she might usefully employ in a fight.

Once within sight of the sea her spirits lifted.

"I agree, Dracky. We should definitely check that place out and likely carefully. Spot, you be good and keep an eye out for trouble." She then dismounted and opening both Feysight and her Scared dancer's ability to sense evil she approached the derelict house, for once pleased that she'd actually remembered to use all her skills. She'd even remembered her bow!

Loryn's positive attitude did help make the last leg of the trip more bearable.

During the trip Gnubert ponders what has happened, and what possible futures may play out, especially if the group has to do battle underwater

Manolo's mood brightens at the sight of the coast. Upon seeing the fisherman's hut, he moves in to explore.

Mortimer joins Manolo and Drack in the search of the hut, dipping into his magic so he can detect anything magic. While he moves forward, he prepares his friends for a possible encounter, the possibility of the hags having "turned the youngin's against us."

Ash looks around the area but doesn't spot anything out of the ordinary

Torry, while having tried to keep her friends' moods high during the trip, joins in on the searching using magical means once the party reaches the coast

The outside of the hut is covered in old nets, old baskets, old fishing equipment, and the remains of dried fish. Once finished outside, Manolo opens the door, and he and Drack both pop their heads inside

The floor is wood, with a ratty rug covering the majority of the floor. In the center of the rug, something is kind of poking up (like a few inches higher than the rest of the floor }

With the hut occupied by Drack and Manolo, he didn't wish to crowd them. Especially if Manolo needed his space to check for traps. Mortimer instead walks over to the water's edge (ooc: if it isn't far away. Im assuming the hut is near the water.).

Mortimer squats down and gathers some water in his palm. He gives it a smell, possibly a taste, to see if it has the same taint of sickness as the flora and fauna they've experienced along the way. (Perception: 16.)

The Hut - while it hasn't been visited in some time is an interesting mix of eccentricity - much of the fishing gear and accouterments are almost crumbling, yet, there are rain slickers and boots that look in perfect shape.

Manolo with Drack as backup, moves the rug out of the way, revealing a copper door with a pull latch. The copper looks lightly tinged with green corrosion, but that's more due to salt air than anything else.

Gnubert, with his head poked through the door, watches as Manolo move the rug, uncovering something metallic

While their friends are checking out the hut, Mortimer moves to the shore. Scooping up a handful of water, he tastes it. The salty ocean water hits his tongue and almost causes him to gag. It doesn't taste or smell "bad" other than being ocean water.

Torry, who's also outside, spots some small patches of flowering plants that look healthy, and have butterflies and bees buzzing around them

Loryn and Ash, waiting for their friends to call out for help, watch as seagulls dive and frolic in the ocean winds, and both spot recently deposited driftwood on the shore, possibly from a storm somewhere, as the seaweed on several pieces are still glistening wetly

Torryn's spirits are lifted by the sight of the flowers and busy insects. She executes a swift pirouette in thanks that finishes with a flourishing bow. Straightening with a smile she again composes herself trying to recall everything that a good sentry should be doing in circumstances such as this. She tries to be vigilant for any signs of trouble, but that wasn't easy when there were gulls and flowers and bees to distract her.

So when you guys run into "thievy" scenarios, like picking a lock, or pickpocketing a diamond necklace, who performs such actions ... I don't remember really seeing any of that being done

As Mortimer waits for Manolo to check for traps and unlock the trap door, he attempts to skip some stones on the water.

After some time passes, he looks back and asks, "Oye! If ya want, I can give it a go, yeah." He flexes his fingers and cracks his knuckles in preparation.

While Manolo and Drack are exploring the door they found, the rest of the party amuses themselves

Mortimer, deciding to throw rocks into the water, starts easy, and the works up to a 60' skip, the rock bouncing off at least 30 waves. When he's happy with his results, he digs around in his backpack and pulls out a crowbar, offering to have a "Help" with any locks.

Gnubert remains posted at the door in case Manolo or Drack need help

Loryn is also at the door, running through scenarios about what is going to happen

Ash, who is also looking through the door, is surpised at was hiding under the rug, wondering if it is a "a passage, it may be a strongroom or storage box."

Torry remains playing and dancing watching both the bees and the seagulls waiting for something to happen, or just enjoying the out-of-doors

Mortimer smiles as he lovingly gazes upon his crowbar, so many memories. One of the best tools he's ever had. Didn't matter, make or break, his trusty iron crow was always a reliable partner in crime. 'Is that dried blood on the end,' he thinks with a grin. When need be, the tool was also a right proper influencer.

He carefully places the pry bar back into his haversack and watches on, from a proper distance, as Manolo finishes his work.

Manolo, with Drack watching, begins to manipulate the lock, which is surprisingly well-oiled. As he convinces it to unlock, he hears metal on glass. He is able to lift the hatch enough that he can spot a trap attached to the door, so that if it is yanked open the trap goes off. I takes him a full minute of finagling his tools and the trap to disarm it. He then opens the door.

What he sees is copper ladder, again colored in green due to saltwater exposure leading down into the dark. Manolo is unable to see the bottom.

Ash and Loryn who have been paying attention, understand that Manolo encountered something due to the small gap Manolo is working through, and the "colorful" language he is uttering under his breath.

Gnubert ponders on family members and who are adept at working with machines ... Gnubert keeps his thoughts to himself while Manolo makes the hatch safe to open

Mortimer, who is enjoying the heft of his crowbar, thinks of how useful the bar is, for opening doors or windows, and as a well, spouse adjuster or person influencer

Loryn looks at Torry, who is enjoying Mother Nature, and lets her know that the hatch is open

Loryn perks up at Manolo's exclamation of success "Well done. You're up Drack. Hopefully the ladder doesn't give way and have some type of insidious trap attached to it lower down beyond our vision." He smiles as he talks, knowing the paladin is not only not overly worried about such things, but would descend into the dangers to protect the rest of the group anyway.

OOC: I swear this game board is messing with me. I posted last night ... I just logged on and my post wasn't there, so I wrote a second one just now. When I saved it, and went back, the one from last night + y'alls responses showed up ... not enough caffeine yet today

IC: With someone providing him a light source, Drack goes down the ladder first. Followed by Torry, then Manolo, then Loryn, then Ash, then Gnubert, and Mortimer is last, carefully shutting the hatch once he's in, as he spots a locking mechanism on this side of the hatch.

The ladder seems to go on forever, in reality it's a 100' long climb down. At the bottom of the ladder is a tunnel – worked stone, damp, and smells like the ocean. The tunnel is dimly lit by glowing moss. The tunnel goes straight East, which heads out under the sea. After walking a mile, the party finds a door, metal, no handle, but there are raised images, pictures of some kind, and the way they are arranged looks like they can be manipulated and moved.

Know: Geography - DC15 Highlight to display spoiler: { The pieces look odd, until you realize they are pieces of the coastline, but not as it looks today ... when put together properly, they should show what this region looked liked a hundred or more years ago}

Disable Device/DEX Check - DC 20 Highlight to display spoiler: { Like the hatch, these pieces are well oiled, and move around rather easily. Once you get them all moved into their "place", well see below }

Once the pieces are identified, and manipulated into their proper place, there is a loud CLICK, and the door splits in two, and then silently opens.

Once down from the ladder Torryn shook her hands. That had been a lot of gripping! She stretched her hands as a good dancer should and then took up her bow, nocked an arrow and stepped forward. Torryn moved cautiously along the corridor, listening and looking for trouble. She again opened her Fey sight (Detect Magic) and called upon her Sacred Dancer abilities to determine if anything evil lurked close by intent on doing them harm.

Before Mortimer descends into the pit, he activates Darkvision on himself because he had no light to give.

All his efforts prove feeble. When Ash describes the map of the coastline, Mortimer has fleeting memories of various maps flash by; maps he's never seen before in this lifetime. None of which resembled what he saw before him. His attempts at helping manipulate the tiles was a complete waste of time, He lets the lead on that. They can take the blame when things go sideways :)

OOC: Sorry guys, I had a bad weekend at work, and then spent most of yesterday with my Mom

IC: The party buffs up for whatever lays below. Once the door opens at the end of their trek, what they see is inspiring. The walls, ceiling, and floor are all constructed of golden-hued stones. Each block is easily 5' on a side. The lichen that had been providing illumination, has given way to floating balls of light (they're the size of bowling balls). The lights are interesting in that they appear to be full of water, roiling like the ocean during a storm.

While the rest of the party prepares themselves for whatever is here, Manolo, Drack, and especially Torry, can all hear something moving in both of the rooms facing them.

Mortimer's eyes go wide at what he sees. This was not what he was expecting from hags. He was visualizing a mud hut, a hallowed out tree, a filthy cave littered with bones ... not this. He makes a quick appraisal at the value of all the gold he sees (Appraise: ??, die roller not working.)

This all does feel very weird, like what Ash and Manolo had said. He has no problem staying put until something can be determined. He wonders if there was a way to interact with this room without actually entering it. Something to test. He looks for any loose stones and pebbles around him.

Standing in the foyer of this complex, the party deduces that "somethings" are in both the upper and lower rooms

Torry takes a moment to make herself harder to hit

Loryn looks around but doesn't spot anything

Manolo shares what his impressions of this place are - "it weird, and makes me bad or off"

Ash looks around at the lights, but also asks if the party should create some of their own

This place is lit by floating balls of light (they're the size of bowling balls). The lights are interesting in that they appear to be full of water, roiling like the ocean during a storm.

Drack moves up and uses his ability to see "evil" looking all around him Highlight to display spoiler: { So from where I moved you up to, you can see into both rooms ... round 1, you catch flickers of evil in both rooms }

Mortimer also feels off. He looks for rocks or pebbles to throw, however, the floor is clear of anything, no dust, sand, dirt, nada. Highlight to display spoiler: { If there was a way to remove these blocks, they'd be worth money to stone masons, or to someone wanting to build a very defensible wall.} Perception check Highlight to display spoiler: { 1d20+4 16+4 = 20 (rolled it myself, hopefully thats ok) - what is intersting about this place, is that you are beneath the ocean or sea. At least 100', possibly more. The pressure alone is messing with y'alls perception. The other thing, the air itself is moist, but doesn't carry any odors, like sea spray or a sewer.}

As a reminder, The stone blocks are cut from single pieces of stone (5' cube). Whatever this stone is, it appears golden in color. Kicking it, or tapping it, the blocks are solid, and joined in such a way that there are no visible cracks between the blocks

At this moment, none of the undead is reacting to the party members

When you guys spot them, it is easy to see that they are not normal slow moving skeletons and zombies, they are moving in military style, almost marching ...

The skeletons are armed with scimitars, small metal shields, and what looks like the remains of studded leather armor.

The zombies are armed with cutlasses, and they too are wearing the remains of studded leather armor

Torryn turned to Mortimer and Ash and whispered quietly. "I have this." She then went to meet the undead abominations, confident in her fey magic and dancer abilities. She drew back her bowstring and sent forth a fiery arrow at the nearest one. (AC:14 - no doubt a miss, but just in case: damage would be 6 from the arrow and 1 from fire.)

Thereafter, she expected the zombies to close. Then she would cast her bow aside and fight as only a Sacred dancer could.

The Lower Room Group:

Watching the zombies walk about, Torry decides to take some initiative (get it, initiative hehehehe) and fires a fiery arrow at the zombie at K10 - it hits ... the zombie looks down at the arrow, then up at Torry and charges

Ash casts a spell on himself that makes invisible things visible to his sight, all while cheerleading on Torry

Mortimer, who is with Torry, fires a sickly looking beam of energy at the zombie that Torry attacked, again, the zombie doesn't look impressed

Also, Torry and Mortimer can see another room (wrote tomb three times, sigh) beyond this one, and it's at least 40' long, width no clue at the moment

The Upper Room Group:

Drack doesn't like this at all, calling out to his friends, "Something's not right here, used ranged attacks or magic on them ... "

Loryn, hearing the wisdom of what Drack is saying, prepares a bevy of magical missiles for the first skeleton to approach them ...

The zombie that Torry and Mortimer attacked comes hustling our of the room and straight to Torry, swinging it's cutlass at her midriff

Dracks voice seems to have caught the attention of the skeletons, as two race towards Drack and Manolo. The rest of the skeletons seem to be waiting for something, but all are now looking hungrily at the four tasty treats in front of them ... (not sure how a skeleton would eat a PC, but I'm sure these guys would figure something out)

Gnubert looks over the battlefield, and glances to the south to see Torryt, and Mortimer. Gnubert remembers something his older brother said about bottlenecks, and two front battles and quickly imagines a chessboard in front of his face. Gnubert moves to the south, and east (G7) and shouts out to his friends, "Loryn, move 10 feet to the south (G6). Manolo move 5 foot south, and 5 foot west (F5). Drack, Move 5 foot to the south (G6). Create a wall and draw them to you on this side. Loryn you can use your ranged attacks at that point! Torry move 5 foot north, and 5 foot west (F8), and Mortimer move 10 foot to the north (G8). Use the caverns natural formations to prevent more than one at a time from attacking us. I can heal from the middle, and the casters, and ranged folks can fight from the middle!

Mortimer gives Gnubert a nod, but he wasn't going to leave Torryn to be flanked by the other zombie. He does via to fortify himself against their attacks. He defensively casts a Shield spell. The shadows around him coalesce around him to form a protective barrier.

He turns to Torryn and says, "If ya move back a step, I will move with you, yeah."

Gnubert: Delves into his teachings and calls out "tactical orders" to his compatriots, moving them into a wall position, making it harder for the skeletons and zombies to get around the fighters, and leaving space open for the casters to work their magic

(see map - I think a couple of the moves would have caused an AOO - so I figured out what moves wouldn't)

Upper Room:

Manolo fires his xbow at I5, striking the skeleton ... but it doesn't seem to have much of an effect on the bony target

Drack will change the battle plan based on how easy to kill these things seemed. He will take a 5' step to H5 and swing three times. Starting with the skeleton in front of him, and then swinging at the other if the first goes down.

J3 has to save vs their friend exploding - but no one is near enough to take damage from it's blast as it explodes

Frustrated at being unable to harm her unusual, undead adversary, Torryn plucks her spear from its sling at her back. She pokes the creature near her (H9). Maybe theses thing were only affected by magic? Maybe they were just really tough and she simply didn't have enough strength to hurt them? She didn't know, but but felt trying the spear was still a good idea.

Torry continues her assault, this time changing to her spear. She does poke the zombie, but it doesn't seem fazed by her attack.

Drack, the Skeleton Slayer (hmmm, that's actually a cool title) kindly asks for one of his friends to move so he can add "Zombie Slayer" to his moniker

Mortimer, frustrated at the lack of effect his spell had done, slashes out with his sickle. On the second strike, the zombie splits open, fetid water and bile leaking from it as it drops to the floor.

Manolo also wants to get back into the action, but doesn't want to shoot his friends in the back with his crossbow

Gnubert is enjoying the show, watching his friends take out exploding skeletons, with little damage to themeselves, and now the first zombie goes down following Mortimier's attacks

Loryn follows his friends down to the zombie room, planning out his course of action

Ash takes time to consider his next move as now the party is focused on the zombies

As the zombies move in tighter around him, especially the one squeezing into a tight spot (half square, H8, -4 hit/ac), he's realized that he's become flanked. He decides to take advantage of that zombie's mistake.

"I can't hurt them." Torry informed the others. She'd tried bashing them. That hadn't yielded any results. Now she'd poked one with her magical spear and still no appreciable consequence. perhaps they had to be chopped. if so, it wouldn't be Torryn doing the chopping.

At the request of Drack, Ash slides allow the paladin room to move, and keeps a weather eye out for more trouble

Drack then takes his turn trying to "Ginsu" the zombies ... He slices, he dices, he turns things into julienne fries...

Mortimer goes on the offensive as well

Gnubert slides closer to Manolo and heals him for 9 health

Torry goes to a totally defensive fighting style, making her near impossible to hit

Loryn slides down a bit to see what is going on, giggling as he does so

Drack lands 2 of his 3 attacks, slicing the zombie open, and making it very "unhappy" with the plucky pally

Mortimer takes advantage of a zombie who's trying to tuck its gut into a tight space, slashing at it twice with his sickle, and opening up wounds on its chest

She really wasn't sure what was happening. She couldn't hurt the zombies, but the zombies couldn't hit her. At least Drack was doing some serious damage. Torryn elected to maintain her defensive stance. She just wished that the one fighting Morty would also try to hit her, but that seemed unlikely. The best she could do was hold the attention of the one in front of her (H8).

With a quick look over his shoulder and a sly smile, Mortimer jokingly says to Drack, "Good to see ya decided to join us." He then continues to slash away on the zombie he was already attacking.

Torry continues to hold H8’s attention. It does continue to try and grab her, as it cant swing its cutlass, but the lithe dancer is a tease and won’t let the zombie give her hugs and squeezes.

From behind Torry and over Drack’s shoulder, Manolo gracefully leaps over his friends and behind the enemy line, technically gaining flanking on H9 and H8, and then attacks H9… ripping into it’s back and it drops to the floor, black bile and blood oozing out, and stinking to high heaven

Gnubert and Ash are both standing at the ready to jump in and defend or aid their friends (I envision them splitting a bag of popcorn and playing at being commentators on the action lol)

Drack attacks F10, in order to drop it and move further into the combat … and with three solid hits the zombie hits the floor, again, lack bile and blood oozing out, and stinking to high heaven

Mortimer again attacks the zombie that’s trying to woo Torry twice, shredding more of it’s skin off

Loryn continues to enjoy watching the show, probably while humming “Let the bodies hit the floor”

It was embarrassing. Everyone could hit and hurt the nasty zombies but her! Torryn could take no more. She attacked once more. In her haste though, her whipped back fist missed the creature's nose. Fortunately , her axe kick and subsequent mule kick were more accurate. (ACs: 25 &17) The strikes however, were not particularly solid. (1 & 3)

It seemed that there really wasn't much that Torryn could do. None of her attacks seemed to have any effect at all! Luckily, the others were more than capable and readily handled the situation.

Torryn's WBL is currently c15k. However, the necklace of Fireballs has only one charge remaining and will be used - likely soon. She also has a potion of Bull's Strength that's of very little use to her. She'll likely pass it to Drack before the next big fight. With those 2 items discounted, she'll be at 14k.

That last of the enemies falls and the area goes quiet accepting the hard breathing of some and the sound of bones rolling about. Unsurprisingly the undead are not carrying anything of value and there is not a bag of gold or diamonds to be found among the stinking corpses and piles of bones.

Nothing moves and after a moment you are sure they are not going to move again unless a necromancer shows up and puts in some serious work.

While not the welcome anyone wants it is the welcome you got and both rooms are free to explore. A quick look reveals that there is nothing of interest, at least at a glance, The lower room at least has an opening on the far end.

Manolo and Mortimer are very confident that there is nothing of value they are missing on the un-undead or in either the northern or southern room.

The group moves into the southern room and look into the next with the help of dancing lights. The room itself is larger, roughly forty foot square and there are three passages leading form it. The northern and southern passages you cannot see into without entering the room proper and the southern, thanks to the dancing lights, appears to lead downward. There is not a sound to be heard and the room itself is fairly unadorned.

Torryn leads the groups in while others keep a sharp eye for any trouble. The room appears as it seemed, fairly large and empty save some dust, the work of time and two high quality candles laying on the floor as if discarded.

The walls and floor and as smooth as joined stone can be. The ceiling is pretty much the same thought the smooth surface is broken by and equally smooth area that is a few inches lower, possibly working around some geological issue or some such. The stone covering this area is identical to the other stone.

To the south you see a hallway that turns after a short time. To the east there are a set of starts the lead down into the dark. To the north is dark but you can make out what looks like the shape of a dark stone altar. Getting closer you see the stone altar is a black of black basalt with two silver single candle holders sitting on it. You also see just enough left to know that a cloth once covered the altar but it has been lost to time.

Torryn didn't need that much light to see and the light from Drack's helm, even at a distance was sufficient for her keen eyes. (Sees twice as far as a Human in dim light) She went North and peered into that room, still remembering to Detect for Evil. Mortimer didn't need any light to be able to see. With his darkvision activated, the darkness hid no secrets. In a low tone, he offers words of encouragement to others who were disappointed with their performance in the previous combat.

"Don't feel bad 'bout those zombies (Knowledge [Religion]: 23). "You were only usin' the wrong weapon. Those dead buggers can take a punch ... an pokin' at their innards won't do much, being dead and all." Mortimer turns to Ash and continues to say, "These corpses were full of seawater. That's probly why your fireball didn't do much harm. Devil's in the details, yeah."

Mortimer moves with the group, checking the shadows and looking for anything of interest or infamy. (Perception: 11)

Loryn could see well enough and all, just like elves, but Loryn was simply not an overly perceptive individual. Most of the others, if not all of them could pick out details and sometimes terribly obvious objects that his mind simply would gloss over. The altar was not one of those things though.

Eyeing the paladin and easily reading him, "Altar?" Loryn knows the answer and simply prepares to move forward.

Torryn moves to the north along with Dack to check out the altar. Closer they can see a fancy amulet laying between the candle sticks. There are no candles in this room, just the ones that were on the floor in the other room. The candle sticks have a very faint divine energy when detect magic is applied, as do the candles, and nothing shows up as evil.

Manolo move to the south and sees that the hallway turns to the west after only ten feet. His attention is quickly shifted to the east well where he sees an oddity in the stone work. A moment of poking about shows what can only be a classic secret door and opening mechanism that seems to be currently locked.

The rest of the group discusses the battle with the zombies and skeletons and the importance of clearing out one floor at a time when in a place like this.

With a raised eyebrow and a curled lip, he replies in a sarcastic tone, "Yeeaah, my genius will shake the earth beneath us."

As curious things are found, the altar, candle sticks and candles, his curiosity agrees with Loryn's statement. "Agreed, those candles are beggin' to be lit. Time to be nimble an' be quick, I'd say."

He moves closer to the altar to see if there are any markings or runes that might help identify what Power or deity this altar was meant to commune with.

The group discusses the presence of candle sticks and over candles making the decision to light them. Those near the alter set to work while Manolo stands near the unopened and locked secret door.

With the group spread out and attention focused on the altar a shape drops down from the ceiling as the small bit of stonework that was lower vanishes having been an illusion nearly flush with the ceiling. A large ray-like drops on Gunbert attempting to engulf him. The creature opens a toothy maw and leers with glaring red eyes. Behind it whips a menacing tail of segmented bone.

It all happened fast but now, in the center of the room is Gnubert wrapped tight in a large ray like creature. Looking at the creature seems difficult, almost like it is blurry to the eye.

Mortimer's scrutinizing of the altar had caused him to drop his guard; he was completely surprised. He immediately moves to a less crowded section of the room and invokes his power over shadows. Grabbing a handful of shadow, he sends them hurtling at the large ray in the form of three shadowbolts.

Turning at the noise, Torryn is shocked to see a strange aberration engulfing Gnubert. Magic flares around the scene targeting the monstrous thing. perhaps it would be sufficient, perhaps not; Torryn just wanted it to let go of Gnubert. Strangely, despite the stress of the situation, she calmly recalled some of her training. Maybe she could get it to release Gnubert. She was confident that she could - IF - she could strike the thing perfectly. It was not going to be easy, but she had to try!

Torryn stepped forward to try to help Gnubert, but didn't even get to the battle. She slipped on an errant piece of stone and only just (acrobatics) caught herself - otherwise that would have been a most ignominious landing.

Next time. She'd get it next time! Hopefully.

{ooc: Engulf is the special ability of the cloaker, basically grappled BUT attacks against the cloaker also damage the one trapped inside.}

Gnubert attempts to break from the grapple but does not make it. {ooc: See email for why.}

Mortimer and Loryn react in similar fashions and mussels fire at the creature causing it to moan in pan and Gunbert to squeak out as well.

Manolo snaps out of it and yells about a secret door and what he knows of the creature. .

Torryn tuns at the noise in an attempt to help but stumbles and misses. (Hero Point for excellent miss description.}

Ash launches off a magic missle the the others causing even more damage to the creature.

Drack moves up and strikes the creature causing decent damage and eliciting a yelp from Gnubert.

Gnubert, trapped inside the cloaker yelps in pain as he takes damage from all of the attacks at the cloaker. The combined attacks take down the cloaker but also do 24 points of damage to Gnubert.

The cloaker slides off of a bruised Gnubert leaving him standing in the center of the room having gone though quite a confusing and probably terrifying the ordeal.

Loryn winces at the grunts coming from Gnubert within the creature identified as a cloaker. He would not have thought taht force magic would do such a thing, but he would also never have guessed that a cloak like creature even existed. "Sorry Gnubert" is about all he can muster to say "Better out than in i hear though eh?"

Gnubert would be calling on some healing shortly, Loryn returns to the other room to fetch the candles.

IF, nothing awful presents itself in the next couple of minutes, once Gnubert is healed somewhat, he places the candles upon the altar in the candle holders and hops back for the anticipated explosion

Emotions rippled through Torryn in quick succession.
Embarrassment: she'd been clumsy and it could have cost Gnubert dearly.
Relief: Gnubert was not eaten, albeit he did seem badly shaken by the experience.
Curiosity: what was that about a secret door? It seemed the best choice going forward. Plus, it would likely stop any questions about her lack of action, not that anyone appeared to have noticed.

"We should probably try that secret door - once Gnubert has recovered. Oh Gnubert, I'm so sorry I couldn't help you then. I kind of ....slipped. You take whatever time you need. We'll wait until you're ready. Oooh, that does look tender." She concluded having peered at his head.

Gnubert looks around, bewhildered, and dishelved. "Thank you all!" The cleric kisses his holy symbol and smiles wearily at Loryn "Definitely better out. Torry it is ok I am sure you looked magnificent even if you slipped!"

Gnubert grasps his holy symbol and casts Cure Serious Wounds healing himself for 24 damage. "Thank the Gods! I am ready to move on now."

"More than often, the cure is more painful than the wound." He's impressed how well Gnubert suppressed the agony of cure spells. In fact he's quite impressed by everyone's pluck when it came to cure magics. Not one single twitch or whimper amongst them.

Mortimer then eyes the dead cloaker. He noticed it had some sway over the shadows, like him. Were they cut from the same cloth, he thought. Speaking of cutting cloth, he asks, "Can ya make a cloak from a cloaker? There's enough hide here for a number of cloaks."

When Loryn puts the candles in the candle sticks, he moves back and positions himself for a better look (Perception: 18).

"Eww, Morty. Really? That sounds sort of icky." Torryn wasn't at all convinced about wearing a cloak made from something that wanted to eat her. Sure, in this instance it had been poor Gnubert being eaten, but the principle was the same. She then turned and smiled sweetly at Gnubert in thanks for his understanding.

Loryn apologies and heads back to the room with the candles finding that nothing in that room has changed. Torryn feels a bunch of conflicting emotions and sees Gunberts wounds..

Gnubert does his best to assuage Torryn’s thoughts and heals himself of the incidental damage he took from being trapped like a kid in a blanket.

Mortimer would, at this point, know quite a bit about the cloaker, chief among them that if it had live a second longer it could have attempted to cause fear or nausea in the part. Also, if it wasn’t hiding in an illusion it could have moaned to weakening the party. Looking closer at the skin he sees that its properties of bending shadow seem to be gone, perhaps it was a talent bread of its intelligence. Torryn seems pretty happy that the cloak will not be made.

When the candle is placed in the candle holder nothing happens.

Drack sees Gnubert emerge alive from the cloaker, and just nods before turning his attention elsewhere. sooner or later, they would all take some good hits. The key was to still be breathing after it was over.

Drack leaves Manolo to investigate the secret door, and instead focuses on what Loryn is doing. He seemed to have a knack for finding things that shouldn't be messed with and then messing with them. Kind of like finding a big red button just begging to be pushed.

Loryn glances towards Ash, the wizard was likely right. It certainly made sense. Predators are near prey, or the possibility of prey. This area saw traffic enough for that thing to stay. "That Ash, or it was fed, which i find more unnerving to speak the truth."

Manolo was opening a secret door and that stops Loryn in his tracks, mid grin to Mortimer. His shoulders slump a bit, one surprise at a time. Loryn turns to see what lies beyond the secret door before proceeding to mess with the candles

"Yes, I really think that we should. Why else would all this stuff be here, set up like this." agreed Torryn, who was now almost universally "Torry" and she had no problem with that at all.

She doubted lighting the candles would achieve anything as she'd used her Feysight to search for magic and found none. Or maybe she just thought she had! it wouldn't be the first time that she'd forgotten stuff. She sighed inwardly. You never saw anyone else forgetting stuff all the time.

Double checking, Torryn opened her Feysight (Detect Magic) and simultaneously tapped into her Sacred Dancer powers (a moment later actually) to search for Evil-ickiness.

Most of the group moves back to the candles though Manolo checks the secret door thoroughly. He finds no traps and quickly works out how to open the door. Beyond the door is a hallway that quickly turns 90 degrees to the south, someone will have to go in.

Mortimer pulls out a twinder twig, looking at Loryn almost daring him to light the candles. Torryn doubts lighting the candles will do much but double checks for magic an eveil again. The candles still resonate feint devin magic and there is a complete lack of evil in the area.

There is some discussion of what the cloaker was doing down here and how it was surviving without foot traffic. Given the creature was intelligent it is possible that it had a way in and out or something This room may simply have been where it chose to make a lair OR maybe it was being kept by someone or something, it is impossible to tell.

There is a hallway past the secret door, other hallways and some candles.

As the team gets ready to light the candles they look around and do not see any danger. The body of the cloaker lays in the middle of the room getting cold. Loryn steps up and lights the candles. As the first candle catches the light glows softly but far brighter then you would expect. The warm light washes over you and the brief sound of tiny bells can be heard. The room has a warm glow and your feel your wounds start to close..

The candle burns faster then you would expect, about one third of it vanishing as you are healed before the candle self extinguishes with a small sizzle. The gloom of the dungeon seems darker and colder when the candles welcome light fades.

Mortimer watches as Loryn grabs the candles but not the candlesticks or the shiny amulet. The candlesticks are magical, had a divination aura. The amulet looked like a treasure that was possibly worth a great deal of coin. He wasn't going to leave those behind. Mortimer takes the candlesticks and the amulet and puts them in his haversack for good keeping. (Perception: 24, natural 20.)

Mortimer then readies himself to enter into the secret hallway.

Drack and Torryn lead the way thought the secret door. Lorryn tucks away the candles while Mortimer grabs the candle sticks and amulet from the top of the altar.

The secret room is kind of pear or clover shaped and contains piles of debris scattered about the room. In bulk you can see there is some value here though it would need to be collected and sold. Scanning the room you see twelve inch pewter beer steins (20 total - 85gp total) along with a golden flute of delicate craftsman ship made for a small creature (200gp) one dozen silver arrowheads (24gp) There is a small jeweled coffer of chased silver depicting a forest scene with birds around the sides and an image of a maiden brushing her hair, it is velvet lined and smells like rose potpourri. (15gp) You also find golden vestments, medium size and ankle-length with frayed edges. (150gp and shown on map page) Finally there is an electrum medallion inlaid with copper in the design of a phoenix rising from the flames. (40gp)

Not a bad haul in terms of value but otherwise the room is unremarkable.

Casting her eyes over the assorted goods, Torryn immediately thought of Gnubert and Loryn when she espied the flute. However, it didn't hold her attention for long. Whilst the arrow heads were of some interest, it was limited as her bow ignited all her ammunition. So her attention quickly fell upon the box.

"I do like the box." she told Drack as she stepped forward to get a closer look. As she advanced she again opened her Feysight seeking to determine if there was any magic amongst the various items to be seen. Regardless of whether the little box was magical, she was curious to open it.

After seeing the contents of the secret room and the age of the tattered priestly robes, Mortimer can only assume one thing. "Maybe these are artifacts for the altar. Possibly the mortal belongin's of old gods or Powers. This bein' a chapel after all; with priestly robes, yeah!" He turns to Gnubert and asks, "Just look at these bits and bobs. Could these 'ave belonged to the gods?"

Then another idea strikes him (Knowledge [Arcana]: 26, natural 20). "Those candlesticks 'ad an aura of divination magic. Maybe when paired with the right trinket, with candles lit, you can commune with the owner in some way. Why else was there an amulet on the altar?"

Mortimer pulls the amulet from his haversack, that he took from the altar, and examines it. He looks for any trace of Alemi. Maybe the healing they received came from the amulet and not the candles.

Torryn eyes some of the items while Drack moves to stand guard after making sure there is no evil..

Mortimer spends some time looking at the candle sticks and coming up with various ideas. The amulet is not magical nor are the vestments, they sure seem to be just old things that are worth some gold. The candle sticks and candles appear to be the only thing of magic and with how fait they are it is unlikely they have other abilities though, in the Wold, you never know.

A quick check of the hallway that leads to the south simply reveals an eight sided room with mirror on the west wall. The mirror are not magical and what few items are in the room have been destroyed with age. {Dungeon crawls can be a slog in PbP so just giving you this room as there is no event to speak of.}

Moving down the stairs the various light sources reveal a well carved stature of a horse and rider. The hours is draped in beautiful sparkling barding that any of you would recognize as mithril chain barding. The nights armor is clearly for show but the lance is of high quality, made of dark wood and has a mithril head, truly a beautiful weapon and the mithril would keep the head light for easier wielding.

There are two matching hallways form this room with stairs leading up. Nothing detects as magical or as evil in the vicinity, they are just beautiful.

{Barding value 1200gp and it weighs 20 pounds. The lance is worth 600gp - 100gp for the darkwood shaft and 500gp for the mithril head.)

Torryn pocketed the small, aromatic box and then set off to catch up with Drack. He wasn't hard to find.

Upon reaching the statue, she studied it quietly for a moment.

"It's very pretty, but it wouldn't suit Spot. She's not a fighting sort of horse. I think all that would just frighten her." That it was far too bulky and heavy for anyone to carry never crossed her mind. She didn't want it, so that was an end to the matter. Perhaps keener minds than hers would see it differently. certainly she'd been mostly impressed with Morty's sagacity. All that stuff about the candles was really clever! maybe her little box had a secret too, but she doubted it was healing.

"Let's go left." She suggested happily. Either way seemed equally valid, so she wasn't going to waste time in a protracted decision. She did however, decide to be 'clever' as well; so looked carefully for any traps on the floor. Wouldn't that impress everyone, if she found one!

With everything they've discovered and found in this incredibly weird and not so frozen chapel, the pressure he feels must really be warping his senses. "I guess a candlestick is just a bloomin' candlestick!" They radiate divination magic, but exhibit no divination qualities. Divinations reveal all kinds of information and lore, among other things, but they do NOT heal. And there is seemingly no reason for all these other trinkets, though they're stored away in a secret closet in an altar room.

He finds all this very confusing, a collection of seemingly random mundane items of no importance. So he does what he does best ... steal everything that isn't nailed down. Once everything is properly nicked and stored away, he continues on with everyone else to the left passage.

While the others discuss the barding Mortimer realizes that the wrong word was used, instead of divination it should be divine or holy when looking at the candlesticks.

Going up the stairs the group rounds a corner and find themselves on a balcony overlooking a pool of water. While the balcony looks like the rest of the tomb the lower level stone has a light layer of green, probably algae despite the water looking very clear in the pool itself. The water is still and in the center floating on the pool of ocean water is a coffin – silver and white wood – carved with symbols of Pantheon. The coffin is wrapped in heavy chains – like the kind ships use for their anchors. There is a small lip, only 18 inches tall around the balcony to warn people of falling off.

Mortimer's wide eyes survey the tomb. He's really beginning to pick up on a theme to this place.

"Now that's one proper bone box, yeah! The chain is a bit much though."

The symbols of Pantheon were easy enough to recognize (Knowledge [Religion]: 17.) It looked like Gnubert had a better idea about this one, judging by his knowing stare (Perception: 20).

He looks over to the lower walkway that appears covered in algae. " Looks like a slippery go, over there," he says as he motions in that direction.

Mortimer decides to employ a divination as well. He casts Detect Magic and concentrates of the coffin and the water around it (Knowledge [Arcana]: 24 if any auras are present).

Looking at the room you see the platform is only up about four feet which should have been mentioned before. The algae is also dry on the lower level so not slippery most likely in a dry state.

Torryn wonder who the casket floats but also know that ships displace water and float with chains an a coffin could probably do the same thing. Loryn is pretty sure that leaving it locked away is the best idea although you did come here for a reason.

Attempts to detect evil come up clean as do attempts to detect magic which doesn’t exclude either quality form being in the box but means what is visible doesn’t register.

Mortimer admires the box and gets a small ribbing from Ash before giving his thoughts on the situation.

Gnubert ponders the situation and knows they were sent to retrieve an object by the old woman. Beyond any religious significance this is a place that would make sense for the item to be, unless there are secret rooms that were missed or some such. The chains are certainly a mystery but it is highly likely they were added after the coffin was placed by someone else.

Torryn realizes that she does not know how deep the water is and cant really tell, it is certainly more then two feet but with the reflection form the light sources it is hard to tell and could be substantially deeper.

They discuss who should go down and who should stay up, with some decision Gnubert casts some buffing spells.

Manolo jumps into the water from the ledge, landing feet first because only a moron would dive into water without knowing how deep it is. The water sloshes as he lands and there is silence but he does find that the water is about five feet deep. Just deep enough to be annoying to move in.

Just as Manolo hits the water a couple of things happen.

First the water starts to move and slosh far more then from a splash. It starts to swell in two spots and then something even odder happens... you see a small amount of now fall. In what could be a blink of eternity the scene around you shifts and you are at a campsite with a light snow falling. The camp is preset and ready for camping but there is also an inn not far away. The sign on the inn reads the "The Giggling Ghost", the famed in for adventures were those of the Wold can sometimes relax.

The snow is falling but it is just below freezing so not terrible and you can see there are blankets and tents in camp and of course there is the inn. You can see a figure silhouetted in the door of the in who waves a greeting.

"Come in and be warm, share your stories with the others! Happy Solstice you fine group of heroes relax your problems will return but now, here, you have time out of time."

The air starts to shimmer and things go black, quick as a blink, before you find yourselves back where you were. Manolo is suddenly wet again… and swimming… and the water is swelling around him as it bulges up into two towering large shapes, humanoid vaguely and made of water.

The good news is the overall depth of the water drops so it is only two feet deep, so you have that going for you. The bad news is one of the water elementals, it’s eyes growing red, brings its arms down to slam.

Poor Manolo is a sitting duck, he thinks, so he decides to weaken and immobilize those watery beasts. He speaks a few words of dark power and a coruscating ray shoots from his extended hand.

(Mortimer casts Ray of Exhaustion at the Red Eyed Water Elemental. Hit Touch AC: 16. Fort Save: 17 vs Exhaustion condition (half speed, cannot run or charge, and takes a –6 penalty to Strength and Dexterity.). First things first: Torryn called upon her strange magic to summon her Fey Shield. (+4 AC). That was the easy part. Now the question was: should she jump in and fight or try to use a different approach? Whatever her decision it had to be made quickly; she couldn't leave Manolo down there unaided for very long. It was tempting to use the bow: it would send magical fiery arrows into the creatures, but she saw two issues with that option - one: they were watery and would likely simply extinguish the fire. Two: she ran the risk of hitting Manny. She discarded that notion. She would have to get wet and fight them. So that's what she would do!

"I'm coming, Manny. Hold on." She told Manolo.

While 2 feet of water was not a problem for Manolo, to Loryn it would be pretty deep in indeed. Deep enough to simply dive into. "Helps a coming!"

Loryn casts Mirror Image creating 3 shifting copies of himself.
With a wild and crazy cry, Spoon!" he rushes past Drack, and jumps down into the near corner of the pool.

Drawing on a sudden pool of heroic courage, Loryn snaps forth his hand and sends a pair of blazing beams of fire into the nearest water elemental. Or rather, he wanted to.

Drack curses as he watches his companions jump into the water. He steps 5' forward and fires off a couple quick shots with his non-magical bow at the closest water elemental. He then drops the bow, preparing to jump into the water after his friends. (hit ac 26 and 10. damage for ac 26 is 8)

Drack says a loud as he fires, "I'd expect this from Torry, but you Loryn? Keep everyone alive until i get there."

The Paladin shakes his head as he prepares to get wet once again. Why is it always water, he thinks to himself.

"Me? What did I do?" Asked Torryn innocently. She was ready. With her dancer's skills it would be easy enough to jump down and attack. She could hold the attention of one whilst Drack dispatched another. that was her plan anyway. It never actually occurred to her to share it with anyone else.

Manolo is unsure how to fight the creatures he is sandwiched between.
Mortimer attempts to exhaust the elemental but only manages to make it a little tired.
Toryn casts a shield spell and gets ready to attack hoping she is fast enough to save Manolo.
Loryn casts mirror image and jumps into the water with a ridiculous battle cry. In a heroic move that would have lived in legends he summons his magical powers but fails to cast the spell.
Gnubert joins some of his party in the kiddy pool next to the elementals.
Manolo tries to swim away and acts defensively which allows him to make it to dry land.
Ash moves to where he can see and launches a magic missile.
Drack curses as more jump into the water and launches two arrows, both hitting the red elemental but not doing their full damage. He prepares to jump as he verbally slights Torryn’s strategic sense gettting a response from her.

The red elemental surges forward five feet, move very close to Gnubert before it slams its bulk down attempting to hit him each with two slam. It connects once for minimal damage.. {Hit: 28/16 Damage: 10/0}

The blue eyed elemental pursues Manolo and strikes just as he clambers out of the water hitting him again. {Hit: 19 | Dam: 5}

"When did this become a pool party?!"

Mortimer didn't know much about water elementals, but it was assumed that it was a bad idea to jump into the water with them. It was akin to leaping directly into an open maw. Well, with everyone going off the deep end, he needed to, even more now, to protect his friends from themselves.

Again ... Mortimer speaks the same words of dark magik and another coruscating beam shoots from his outreached hand; striking the red-eyed watery giant.

(Mortimer casts Ray of Exhaustion at Red Water Elemental again. Hit Touch AC: 24. Fort Save 17. Doesn't matter if he saves again. Anything that causes Fatigue in an already fatigued creature becomes Exhausted instead. Can't run or charge and -6 penalty to both Str and Dex. Duration: 7 minutes.)

Mortimer then reaches down within the depths of his soul to heroically cast another spell, but this time at the blue-eyed water elemental. Again, the same dark words are spoken and another ray fires from his extended hand. The blast slams into the blue elemental.

(Hero Point: 2nd Standard Action. Mortimer cast Ray of Exhaustion at Blue Water Elemental. Hit Touch AC: 19. Fort Save: 17 vs. Exhaustion. If he saves, he becomes Fatigued instead. You know the rest :) Duration: 7 minutes.)

Torryn rushed to the aid of Manolo, quickly interposing herself between the bluish tinged creature and a very sodden Manolo. Of course, it being Torryn she couldn't just jump down the short distance. Instead she cartwheeled, one handed off the low lip of the upper segment to vault over Manolo to land where she desired (Acrobatics:21). that done she called a portion of her Fey magic into her fist (Arcane Strike) and struck at the nasty with a pistoning palm strike. Well, that had been the intent, sadly, once again watery things proved far trickier than they at first appeared. She made a slight splash and little else, but looked very good doing it. Yet that wasn't enough. She called upon her inner 'Fey' and the patrons of the Dance to attack once more with her opposite hand! (Hero Point Used!)

Loryn tries again and its the red elemental with a scorching ray, two streams of fire strike the creature though one would have missed if the pile of water wasn’t tired.
Mortimer launches another ray and the pile of water with red eyes is well and truly exhausted now. {So silly}
Gnubert is rude to the water before casting sanctuary on himself.
Manolo, wet and wounded, fires a crossbow bolt that misses.
Torryn strikes the blue elemental, after an artistic flourishing making the strike a beautiful thing, and learns that punching water is not the most effective activity.
Drack lands nest to the wounded elemental, while complaining about the water, and slashes with his sword which is just enough to disrupt the magic holding it together and it sloshes apart.

The ware level in the rool rises from two feet to three and a half feet making everything difficult terrain as the first elemental falls. The blue elemental slides back further into the water which would force melee attacks to move closer. It rears back its long arm like water structures and swings both at Torryn, because it doen’t know how evasive she is. {Hit @ Torryn: 18/28 Dam: -/7}

One blow lands but Manolo has at least been spared. The water sloshes about making things more difficult and the casket still sits adjacent to the elemental.

Mortime sees the elemental is fatigued and launches his own version of a magic missile.

The elemental has taken some beating but is still in the fight. It rears back both arms and attempts to continue battering Torryn. One of its blows connects chipping away at Torryns stamina. {HIt: 31/19 Dam: 7/-}

"Ooof" This was most definitely not part of the plan. With all her defences in place she was supposed to a challenging target. Clearly these watery creatures hadn't read the Sacred Dancer's Handbook. Well, she wasn't going to just stand there getting hit! It was time to hit back.

Torryn spun in situ and lashed out with two scything chops. Both struck true (AC: 24 & 21) but all she succeeded in doing was splashing herself. (Damage: 2 & 4. Neither breeches the DR.)

Drack takes a 5' move at the elemental, and swings twice, trying to give him someone to focus his attacks on. ht ac 18 and 20, damage 13 and 11.

Ash, does his best impression of a turret and keeps launching magic missiles
Loryn flounders having learned nothing from his last adventure.
Toryn takes a blow and then washes her hands in sentient water.
Gnubert heals Torryn but does nothing to dry her off.
Drack complains about his lack of service from the spell casters before his blade moves though the walking water.

The elemental had raised its arms to strike again just as Drack blade tore though the water. The water holds it position for just a moment before it loses cohesion and splashes back into the pool. The pool level again rises to its original five foot depth making things even harder for the shorter members of the party.

The water sloshes back and forth but eventually settles down to a smooth surface as the room goes quiet except for the water dripping off some party members.

Splash...gulp...gurgle Loryn flails a last time and then vanishes beneath the surface.

Mighty hero indeed Loryn folds his arms and simply waits. One of the others would pull the worthless gnome from the water soon enough, assuming they overcome the Mirror Image that he cannot dismiss.

If I live, I shall never hear the end of this...perhaps retiring while the getting is good and simply run Minerva's....the quiet life

"Many thanks for that gracious healing." Torryn said without turning around. Were those things actually dead or were they hiding back in the water? Well, if they were going to hide, she was going to take advantage of the fact. She grabbed the coffin and attempted to pull it to the side. Such was the depth of the water now, that she had to swim to do this, Torryn not being much over 5' in height. Sadly, her ambition again exceeded her ability. The coffin wouldn't move and she stood on tip toes in order to breathe, before trying again. (Swim:6)

Drack watches the elemental dissipate, and the starts moving towards dry land before quickly becoming aware that Loryn appeared to be underwater.

The parties victory moment is somewhat dulled by the search for Loryn. Some light is provided as people look as Torryn and Manolo prove that they have learned to swim in their last adventure. Torry spots the gnome, who seems to have gotten himself together, just before his head breaks the surface of the water. He makes it to the side of the pool and clambers onto the dry surface panting.

With no one in fear of drowning there is a moment of calm and some heads turn back to the coffin and what to do about that.

"I'll go back and check whilst I still have my super Fey protections up." Torryn offered optimistically. Those protections really hadn't been that protective against the watery monsters. Nonetheless she swam back to investigate the coffin further.

The plan was to drag the thing to the side so that everyone could assist in ensuring it was safe to open and in the actual opening.

The group, with just a bit of struggle manages to drag the coffin closer to the side of the pool where it can be inspected and interacted with. At this point the chains that bind it are still in place but it does appear their is a mechanism that could be used to unlock them which does not appear to be trapped or difficult to open. The chains could be used for keeping something in but with little thought of someone finding it and opening it.

The coffin itself is of very high quality and clearly was not something that your average undertaker would have at the ready. A large amount of silver and white wood is used in its construction and their are intricate carvings of a gavel with its head encircled in a pointed circle of silver with a jade background. Gnubert recognizes this as a symbol of Pantheon who represents fair judgment.

Bows are retrieved and much discussion is had about the properties of wood. While not magical the coffin would certainly be described as a masterfully worked item and, at the least, would be very resistant to water. Water causes rot and the Wold is a place where undead things can appear any good coffin would be sealed tight and resistant to rotting in such a world.

Mortimer takes initiative and, as the clasp holding the chains is not really a lock, manages to open the chains which slide off the top of the coffin. The top of the coffin hinges up and a figure slowly rises from the coffin as though it could stand without bending or using its hands. (Think old vampire movie} The figure is male and wearing vestments of either a cleric of paladin of Patheon that are faded with time. Its sunken features look like that of true death as it bands and places silver inlaid wooden pyramid at its feet.

A voice, worn with time speaks form the corpse. “This will help you heroes when the time comes to prevent the three becoming one. They shall be judged.” With that the body loses its animating force and crumples back into the coffin.

Gnubert stiffles a gasp as the figure stands, speaks, and places the pyramid on the ground. The cleric calmly walks forward his hand on his holy symbol, and peers into the coffin. Gnubert bows his head, and says a prayer to Alemi, and Domi over the figure. "That was certainly different. I do not imagine we will see that happen again anytime soon."

Gnubert carefully picks up the pyramid and studies it for a moment, (Knowledge Religion DC 29). "Loryn if you say so then I will hold on to it. I am not sure what it is though." If Gnubert discovers any information on the object he will pass it along to the others.

Torryn blinked and blinked again. Yes, it was real and it seemed that everyone else could see it too. She smiled as the spirit departed. Perhaps they'd helped it find lasting peace. Now all they had to do was bash some witches. Of course, that was a lot easier said than done and, she was minded NOT to say that aloud, as after all, just as not all spirits were malign, not all witches were evil. It just so happened that the ones they sought very much were.

She pulled herself up out of the water and retrieved her bow. She then set to drying herself with her magic.

Holding the pyramid Gunbert examines it more closely. While the three sides are silver and wood the base of the pyramid is basalt, similar to the alter you encountered previously. The black stone is a sharp contrast to the rest of the pyramid and seems almost out of place though it is clear meant to be part of the item and doesn’t hide any hidden compartment or anything like that, the pyramid is just good and solid.

Drack has the crux of it when he reminds the others that this is only part of their current problem. The children are still missing and their are witches involved. The pyramid is part of it all but it did not come with instructions so its final purpose will have to be discovered still.

"barring anything of great interest in the other north chamber, I think we revisit the altar. Candles, pyramid and altar make three things and perhaps bringing the pyramid back to the altar will bring the 3 to one again. First let's check that other chamber though"

(OOC: Apologies if a little rusty. Mitch and I usually work on posts together with him being the one to post the joint post we worked out, however due to his recent illness I'll be starting our partnership on my own and he'll be joining / back to our usual method soon)

Mortimer examines the pyramid trying to determine how to turn it on but can't seem to find a trigger on the pyramid for it to do anything. He suggests that Loryn should be the one to activate it.

Loryn nods to Mortimer at the compliment and then suggests they back track to the alter assuming they don't find anything interesting in the unexplored north room before falling in with Drack and Torrynashkabbeth to check it out.

Gnubert agrees that going back to the alter room after they checked the unexplored chamber is as good as any other options and he agrees with Drack that they need to remember why they are here.

Monolo points out that at least they have a clue about how to defeat the witches.

The party makes its way to the unexplored north room and finds the detritus of some kind of long forgotten goblet shaped room with a martial purpose, perhaps an armory or a barracks of some sort. On the walls are moth eaten tapestries and what could have been weapon racks or storage containers have fallen into disrepair as have the furniture. Although the years have not been kind to this room but perhaps something useful still remains?

Mortimer recalls the words of the spirit guardian, and after a short study of the pyramid's configuration, he explains, "By the looks of it, yeah, ya wont needta activate it. Just put the thingamabob in place and let it do its thing."

When they begin to enter the northern room, his eyes go wide with the possibilities of treasure. It's always the last place you look. However he's distracted by the image of a squirrel on the moth-eaten tapestry (Perception: 7).

Toryn suggests that while they are here they might as well take a look around although they shouldn't waste too much time as there are still people to rescue.

Mortimer shares his thoughts with the others regarding the activation of the pyramid's ability. His eyes go wide at the possibilities of treasure.

The party picks through the ruins of the barracks or armory and is able to salvage 3 suits of MW Bulette Armor(reskinned studded leather) and 3 MW heavy steel shields amid what presumably used to be containers of some sort.

Satisfied they have found all they could and mindful of the goal to rescue the missing group the party retraces their steps back to the bell shaped room with the altar. You return to the room with the altar where you previously took the candlesticks you had put in the candleholders, the candleholders themselves and the amulet. Nothing has pretty much changed in this room since you were last here and nothing happens in the presence of the pyramid artifact you were given from the guardian. Do you do anything else here before presumably leaving the dungeon?

She'd ignored the armour and shields as both items were heavy and of no use to her. Sacred Dancers needed to be free to jump around. That wasn't going to happen with her arms full.

Hey Bearclaw!

Looks like your former DMs Jon and Ryan didn't get the character sheets approved as they should. I just emailed the group and we'll use that email thread for all communication on this.

Even if you've posted it here, (yes I just did a scan of the board for the last month) reply to my email and let Ryan and Jon know (again if you've done it before) that you are:

1) not ready for approval
2) ready for approval
3) have the DM stamp on your character sheet from Ryan or Jon saying that your sheet is approved.

Be sure that all 4 DMs both previous and current (Ryan, Jon, Hugh, Mitch) have edit permissions on your character sheet. This is a must.

I expect to hear from ALL of you by the end of today. If you have already posted today, be sure you stop and reply to the email I sent immediately please.

Add any questions you have to that email I sent. Reply all so all DMs and the ACDMS can see where you stand.

BTW, I'm sure that DMs MItch and Hugh will get you caught up on WBL right away. They will want you prepared for what they have planned.

Ok, folks. Lots of action today, which is good. Thanks! If you didn't reply to the email threads, do so.

Note that the DMs can't access Mortimer's and Gnubert's sheets to approve them. DM Jon couldn't get Gnubert's sheet to open at all. Wade, it might help just to email it to DMs Jon and Ryan.

Give your DMs editing rights to the sheet as they have to physically tag it as approved.

Manolo needs to pick out 2 languages that are in the Pathfinder rules and then the sheet is approved. (check emails)

I put all this info on the address list by PC name to show whether it is ready for approval, and whether the DMs have approved it. I emailed the list to everyone as well.

Check emails. It and this board are our only means of communication.

Mortimer’s character sheet has always set up to allow access to anyone who clicks the link. Is anyone not being allowed. Past DMs have had access before and I never needed to give special permission.
