DM Mark - "Who was that lady? She was really here right?" Tuesday January 9th, 2024 1:53:01 AM
The Petals look around, and some seem a bit unsure if the forest scene and that fey woman were just a dream. Tsak, Elyas, Kiwina, Falco and Mak remember her from a time on Bridge Island. She called herself Ailleann then, and she gave one of their party (Son Imod) a cursed item that began slowly sapping his strength. She offered for all to return with her to the Fey Realm and the royal courts there, though everyone wisely declined.
Tsak thinks it's probably a good thing that the fey woman is gone. He goes over to listen as one of the doors. He hears nothing behind that door.
Elyas awakes well rested. He'd guess that he easily slept a full 8 hours, but maybe more (Assume 10 hours for any spell durations in effect. It's probably been about 15 hours since he left that house with the homicidal furniture.) In any event, he finds that he is able to memorize new spells.
Beech looks at the campfire where he was trying to cook food. The campfire was an illusion, as was the snow and the trees. Any food he had out would still be there though.
Mak stands, refreshed from his rest. He wanderers aloud if the Petals are too deep to teleport, and asks Panzer if he were once a dwarf.
Panzer is more focused on the fey woman. Who was she? Would she prove to be trouble? Some in the party may inform him that she was a bit of trouble in the past, and any deals made with the fey can be tricky.
Kiwina examines the door nearest him. He listens and thinks he hears something. Maybe a sort of crackling sound? He notices the door and even the floor is unusually clean and devoid of any marks or dust or dirt.
Ayotnom casts Detect Magic and looks at all the doors. He notices there is a faint magic emanating from the door where Kiwina stands - conjuration magic he thinks. None of the other doors seem to radiate magic, though all the doors seem similar and similarly clean.
Here is your map. Please move yourselves on the map, or let me know where you move to.

DM Mark - "OK, so what's the plan?" Wednesday January 10th, 2024 1:51:50 AM
(To simplify things, I added letters a, b, c, and d to the four doors here.)
Elyas prepares his spells for the day and casts Mage Armor and Darkvision. He hear Ayotnom say there is a faint Conjuration magic associated with door "b", and that makes him want to avoid it.
Falco examines the door where Kiwina is, but he realizes Spellcraft will not tell him much without having cast Detect Magic first.
Panzer tells Mak he was born a beastfolk. Still, his skill as a minder tells him they're maybe 100' or more underground. He also looks at the door where Kiwina is, his Spellcraft skill will not tell him much without having cast Detect Magic first. Then he moves over near Tsak and listens at that door. All seems silent listening at door "c".
Tsak suggests some tactics and moves near Mak.
Ayotnym announces there is a faint Conjuration magic coming from door "b". (To clarify, the door does not radiate magic, but there seems to be magic beyond it. Conjuration can be quite a lot of things.)
Beech grabs his bow and waits to see what others will do.

DM Mark - The Doors Thursday January 11th, 2024 1:18:35 AM
The room is otherwise quiet as Petals contemplate The Doors.
Mak stands in the center of the room, and suggests opening the one door where Ayotnom detected some magic. He says that it seems likely that magic would indicate an important door. But then again, People Are Strange.
Falco talks about the Strange Days when the Warper Sar changed him into a beastfolk. He says he can cast Dispel Magic on the door.
Kiwina asks how people want to prepare for opening the door. He's not sure what the crackling sound could be. (Let's hope it's not the sound of Riders on the Storm.)
Elyas says he will hold his spells until the group decides to Break on Through to the Other Side.
Panzer says that the crackling sound heard from behind the door may be from a fire. He worries any fire here may light the oil on the water behind them, and he thinks that would be The End.
Thinking back to when he set the forest on fire, and when he set the house on fire, Beech takes Panzer's comment about fire personally. While he is able to Light My Fire, he says he can cast other spells as well.
Ayotnom says, "Conjuration could mean summoning. I don't know if anyone has dispel magic or the like, it could potentially come in handy." He stays toward the middle of the group, not wanting to be a Back Door Man.

The Petals stand before door "b".
Tsak works to clear everyone back from the door. Though he plans to open it and jump back, he finds that the door is locked.
(I'd hate to waste a whole daily post on unlocking a door, so let's assume a 14th level party has a way to open a DC 25 lock. However, you may want to assume all the doors here are locked as well and let me know how you unlock those doors when you get to them.)
With the door unlocked and open, you can see that the 5' wide door opens onto a long, dark 10' wide corridor. This corridor goes for about 50', and then opens onto a wider area, though it's hard to tell from here how wide. But you can see a far wall about 30' from where the 10' corridor seems to end.
Though it's dark, occasional flashes of light reveal some sort of a pedestal ahead (marked on the map.) Atop the pedestal, is some sort of sphere about 1’ in diameter. You think it's this crystal that occasionally emits a bright flash, briefly illuminating the darkness down there. Opening the door... Panzer has adamantine weapons and uses them regularly. If no one is able to pick the lock( which is why we are figuring this out I guess) Panzer can insert his blade between the door and the jamb and cut through the latch that holds the door shut. Without power attack he does 1d3 +10 damage + 1d6 of either cold or electric, I would use cold. Unless the lock, or in this case the bolt that holds the door shut is adamantine a round or two of work should be enough to get through the bolt since adamantine bypasses any hardness less than 20 (adamantine) This is assuming the door has a lock similar to this.... The lock sits on top of the mechanism. when locked it turns to place apiece of metal on top of the bolt to hold it down, not allowing it to be lifted out of the catch on the jamb. The bolt sits under the lock and is a simple bar of metal that drops into a catch on the jamb when closed. The knob sits under the bolt and when turned or lifted it lifts the bolt out of the catch in the jamb, unless the bolt is locked in place by the lock or is severely bent. This set up is far simpler than a modern lock but is a realistic representation of how a lock could work. by severing the bolt the lock is undamaged and with any luck a trap on the lock would not trip (this is completely up to the DM). Yeah I have rekeyed locks before and used to love looking at the locks in the store so I knew how they worked 8). IC Panzer watches as the spellcasters move up the hall and examine the orb. No explosions and no screams so the room seems safe so far.

Tsak looks at the locked door. He bashes his shoulder into it. Ouch. As he gets ready to really damage his shoulder, Panzer waves him off (no need to burn a hero point.)
The little badger pulls out an adamantine kukri, and within a few rounds he is able to hack away the lock mechanism, and Tsak is able to open the door. (Interesting description of the lock - thanks. Panzer has to hack into the lock mechanism to get at the bolt.)
Tsak, Mak and Panzer hang back as the magic folks go check out the magic stuff.
Falco tentatively goes partway down the corridor, certain that the flashing orb is going to blow up or turn into a terrible creature.
Elyas examines the larger sphere on the pedestal and the smaller one in the corner. He says, "This looks to be something used for a planar gate, but it is broken. I'm not sure what exactly needs to be repaired, it is not my specialty. It doesn't look functional right now. Oh, there's another one back here…" As he steps into the room, he walks past the scattered books and scrolls laying on the floor near the pedestal. He retrieves the smaller orb and brings it back for the others to see.
Beech casts Detect Magic and studies the orb Elyas carries. He know this is a crystal ball and can be used for scrying (it's the actual magic item, not just the focus for a scrying spell.)
Ayontom also casts Detect Magic, he is welcome to roll against the previous Spellcraft and Knowledge Arcana DCs to double check what his friends are saying about these things.
The 1' diameter crystal sphere still sits atop the pedestal, with some discarded books and scrolls on the floor nearby. The occasional flashes from the thing are a bit distracting. For those unable to see in the darkness here, it's like seeing lightning briefly illuminate the room for a split second. But without the thunder.

Kiwina stands at the entrance of the dark room, eyes adjusting to the lack of light. The occasional flashes from the larger crystal sphere in the center create fleeting moments of illumination, revealing the enigmatic surroundings. After casting light, Kiwina takes a moment to survey the room. He carefully observes the layout, noting the placement of the larger crystal on the pedestal and the scattered books and scrolls on the floor. With cautious steps, Kiwina approaches the pedestal in the center of the room. He examines the larger crystal sphere, taking note of its occasional flashes. He refrains from touching it, mindful of the potential magical properties Elyas mentioned. Instead, he turns his attention to the scattered books and scrolls. He carefully flips through the pages, looking for any clues, symbols, or information that might shed light on the purpose of the crystals or the nature of the room.

Falco is relieved nothing blew up, but he hasn't ruled out being crushed by a rock. He's an anxious little guy.
Mak moves up to get a better look. He can see that the crystal sphere rests atop a plain stone pedestal. He thinks about things he's heard about the planes and gates and such. He recalls that it's very rare to have any sort of natural gateway between the different planes. Some powerful creatures have the ability to travel across planes, and powerful spellcasters are sometimes able to open a gateway between planes. Permanent connections between the planes can be established, but this usually requires a lot of resources and strong magics.
Panzer wonders aloud about the scrolls and books that seem to be lying about, but does not venture into the room.
Beech notes that the scrolls and books scattered about the floor do not detect as magic, so he has no interest in them and leaves the room. He mentions that scrying is not something he does.
Kiwian is intrigued by the papers on the floor. He creates a light and begins looking through them. As he looks at the writings, he sees that they relate to access to other planes. Some seem to only theorize different planes of existence, but most of the material relates to the shadow plane. There is information about constructing inter planer gateways. One book relates to theories about using a crystal sphere to see into the shadow plane and perhaps even communicate with those there.
Ayotnom examines the two crystal spheres. The larger one on the pedestal shows Conjuration magic. He can sense that it was intended to operate as some sort of planar gateway, but it's broken somehow and not actually functioning. The pedestal it rests on is not magic. It continues to periodically flash, which is a bit annoying to anyone in the room.
The smaller crystal sphere that Elyas is holding is a crystal ball used for scrying - the actual magic item, not the spell focus for a scrying spell.

Tsak studies the flashing from the orb, trying to puzzle out if someone is trying to send a message. As his friends talk and investigate, he cannot find a particular pattern to the flashes. He wonders if the flashing orb might start emitting explosions, lightning or monsters - perhaps making people disappear. This leads him to think perhaps someone is trapped in the thing.
Mak moves down into the room as he calls back to Tsak that there may be an explosion, though he's counting on Kiwina's body to shield him from the blast. Mak suggest blocking this place off and moving on to the other doors.
Elyas holds onto the smaller crystal orb. He wonders if the Petals could use it to scry on someone, and he asks if anyone has personal effects from the house they were in.
Panzer calls down to Elyas that he has a magical kitchen knife from the house and offers to do the scrying.
(OK, so sometimes DMs make mistakes. That Crystal Ball Elyas is holding has an aura of Divination, not Conjuration. Sorry if I mislead anyone. The larger orb did indeed have a Conjuration aura though.)
Falco moves into the room to look around. The floor, ceiling and walls are made of stone. He can see the mess of papers and such that Kiwina is looking through. They seem to have been scattered in a haphazard way with little regard for them, though Kiwina is trying to organize them somewhat. He notices nothing particular about the walls. The pedestal that holds the larger flashing crystal orb seems rather utilitarian, and has none of the ornamentation one often sees with columns and stonework.
Kiwina tells Elyas these papers might be more meaningful to him. "Looks to be about constructing gateways. Given the condition of the crystal. . . Might tell us how to fix that, or might have caused it. We can try to puzzle it out, or we can look at the other doors first."
Beech moves back out to keep an eye on the other doors.
Ayotnom agrees that the Crystal Ball is a magical scrying device, and wonders if it could be used to scry the intended portal destination of the larger flashing orb.
(The DM agrees with Mak. Let's wrap what, if anything, you will do in this room or with these orbs in the next post. Elyas will try to use the orb to cast scrying. First he takes the knife from Panzer. He brings to mind all of the information (as sparse as it is) about the healer they are searching for, and holds their possession (hopefully theirs...) in one hand while holding the crystal in the other.

The final thing he tries to scry on is just a solution to how to fix the defunct portal in general.
DM Mark - Flashes in the Darkness d20+10=13 ; d100=48 ; Monday January 22nd, 2024 2:16:59 AM
Falco remains in the room. He studies the plain stone column and asks if anyone is going to try to use one of the orbs. (Not sure if this means using the smaller crystal ball, or perhaps trying do something with the larger orb on the pedestal that keeps flashing.) The flashing right in front of hims is starting to really annoy the little owl-man and his great big eyes.
Elyas suggests leaving the larger orb alone. He takes the kitchen knife that was found in the house and tries to scry the healer they seek, assuming the knife belongs to this person. The crystal ball begins to grow cloudy as it is activated, as if there were a swirling mist in the solid crystal ball. But almost as quickly, the mist dissipates and the ball is clear again.
Ayotnom takes the crystal ball and tries to use it to scry the destination that the larger crystal may have been tied to. Nothing happens, and if asked Elyas might inform him that it only works on creatures, not locations. This kind of defeats his idea to scry this room in the past, or to scry a way to fix the flashing orb.
Mak considers pushing the crystal ball off it's pedestal. He asks Tsak if he wants to try and break the thing? Tsak tells Mak he's on his own with that, and suggests trying some of the other doors. As he waits, Tsak draws his falchon and admires the craftsmanship.
This makes Kiwina nervous. He quickly gathers up the papers scattered about and leaves the room.

Mak remains curious, and pushes the orb from its perch atop the pedestal. With a loud *smack* it hits the floor. Strangely, it does not break. Mak retreats as a shimmer reverberates through the chamber and a bit beyond (30' radius) affecting Mak, Falco and Elyas (at that point, Falco and Elyas had not yet moved and are still nearby.) The air within 30' of the larger orb now shimmers, filling this room and extending a bit into the corridor. This seems to have no effect on Mak.

Kiwina calls to the others that the hacking noise they hear is Panzer opening another door.
Ayotnom takes the crystal ball and tries to scry on several groups associated with this place. As with Beech, the crystal ball grows misty for a moment and then becomes clear again, though it does not show a vision of anyone. (It's pretty difficult to scry on someone about whom you have no information. Also, with each use of Crystal Ball in a single day, the DC to resist the scrying attempt decreases by 1. I have rolled with each attempt.)
With the lock and latch to door "a" destroyed, the door swings slowly in to reveal a dark room. The room is 20’x20, 20’ high. It has a 10’ wide hole in the middle. It smells musty in here, the smell stronger from the hole. The floor here is dirty Assuming someone is brave enough to gaze down into the hole with a light source, they can see that the 10' hole goes down 20', and then widens out. As you shine a light down there, the extent of your light will reveal that the floor 40' down in there seems to be moist, and you cannot see how big that area down there might be. And you think that whatever is moist down there looks to be red.

(From the geometry of this area as described before, the only way you would be able to see far enough down the hole to see the bottom is if you are on the edge of the hole. So I have moved folks in according to your posts. I really do prefer when you move yourselves though.)
Tsak moves in and looks down into the hole. Once he is in there, his 60' of dark vision allows him to see the bottom. He mentions there is an object sticking out of the wet, red stuff. Then he suggests everyone leave.
Mak seems disappointed that toppling the larger crystal orb didn't result in an explosion (though Elyas and Falco may feel otherwise.) Faced with this new room, he says the place feels trappy and wished he had a trappist. Mak moves forward to look down the hole, the bottom of which can only be seen from the edge. As he looks in, he's not sure what that red stuff is that seems to coat the floor below.
Panzer walks the perimeter of the hole. He notes something sticking out of the red stuff, though it looks like this 10' diameter hole looks like it is not the result of a collapse, but rather it seems to have been constructed this way. He ties himself off to Kiwina in the other room and climbs down the rope.
The climbing down with a rope and a wall is DC5, so he cannot fail. Moving at 1/4 speed, it takes him a couple rounds to climb down the 20' to where the room below widens out, and he can see that this widens into a 30'x30' room. From here, he will need to make a DC 15 climb check to climb further down the rope in mid-air. Below him he can see the floor and that white object partly covered in that red stuff.
Beech waits. Highlight to display spoiler: {On the scrying your mom thing, the only bonus you would get is a -5 to her DC for "Familiar (you know the subject well)". I'm unsure where the -15 is from. Besides, it could be really traumatizing to scry your mom…}

Elyas moves back out into the main room. (Please keep track of Elyas' non-lethal damage.)
Tsak muses about traps and trapps, and stays near the hole in case Panzer needs help. He wonders if it's a waste pit or a pantry. Mak thinks pantry.
Having heroically resisted the worst effects of the arcane energy leak unleashed for the larger crystal orb, Falco heals himself which dispels all the non-lethal damage he sustained. He waits for the others.
Kiwina urges Panzer to climb back up.
Beech stays in the larger room and keeps a sharp eye out.
As Panzer tries to climb down the rope without the benefit of a stone wall, he loses his grip and falls. (First climb roll 13 vs DC 15). The good news is that the thick carpet of red stuff cushions his fall a bit so he only takes 4 damage from the fall. The bad news is that this red substance clings to him and begins to dissolve both him and his armor. Panzer takes 2 points of CON damage, but his armor takes 10 points of damage (bypasses hardness and nothing says that adamantine is immune.) Now that he's down there, he can see that what he thought was a piece of bone sticking out of the muck is actually a pearly white spindle carved from some crystalline substance.
As Panzer looks around, he sees no apparent doors or passages, other than the hole above him.

(Humble apologies to Panzer. He did not actually fall so he took no falling damage, and only took damage from the slime once he finished climbing down.)
Mak tells everyone he told them so, and he tells Kiwina to get ready to pull Panzer up once he grabs onto the rope. He shares what he thinks the red stuff is.
Falco worries for his friend and urges someone to pull him up.
Tsak says once Panzer is up, the slime will need to be neutralized with fire or cold.
Panzer is mindful enough to grab the pearly spindle even as he realizes the red slime is burning his feet and his armor. He calls for Beech to burn the stuff.
Beech hears his friend calling for fire, and Mak and Tsak have said fire or cold will do the trick. Beech rushes forward, but he cannot get quite far enough to actually see where Panzer is. Still, he takes a calculated risk and creates a Freezing Sphere down at a point he can see and hopes for the best, as he tells Panzer to "just chill."
Panzer does chill. In fact he gets rather cold as the freezing sphere explodes. This does 24 points of cold damage to Panzer because of his save. And it freezes the red slime. This has the effect of also freezing Panzer's feet in the stuff. (DC 25 Strength check or a DC 25 Escape Artist check to break free. This slime is not considered to be a creature so it would have not creature type. It is a dungeon hazard though and I assume it is principally made of water.) Fortunately, Beech's choice of cold means the rope is still there.
Elyas chides his friends, but stands ready to help. Kiwina is ready to pull Panzer up once he is free and has hold of the rope. Ayotnom stands by to help as well.
(Wow - good job. That was handled rather well. It could have been a lot worse.)

Instead his body was assaulted by the bitterest cold hr had ever experienced. As he stood up from the half crouch he felt his fur peel away from where it had been frozen to his armor by sweat. When he exhaled it was a cloud of steam that was slightly unexpected. He hurt all over from the things that bump and bruise a body that no one ever notices until the cold sets in. But he was alive and his feet were no longer being eaten off of his body by a monstrous flesh eating slime. He kinda suspected that the thing he had picked up was an ioun stone so he held it aloft and opened his hand to let it orbit his head, at least for the time being. He then set to the task of chippin his feet free of the slime with his mining tools. "That seems to have done the trick, my feet aren't melting anymore at least. You know, stuff made of resistant materials like this stone" Pazer says while grunting as he digs away at his feet to free them. To emphasize the point he lets the white spindle go near his head, allowing it to orbit his noggin and do what it does. " What does a spindle like this do anyway?"
DM Mark - "...probably just a waste disposal pit." d20=9 ; Monday January 29th, 2024 12:08:37 PM
Panzer stood down in the hole, his feet frozen in the muck. He had expected fire and instead got ice. On the plus side, fire would have likely destroyed the rope. Though it's covered in a thin layer of frost, that seems to be going away, and the rope seems to have been unaffected by the cold.
Kiwina and Tsak hang on to the rope, ready to haul Panzer up. Falco is anxious to heal him once he's in reach.
Elyas waits to see if Panzeer can free himself, and Ayotnom asks if there is a way to warm up the stuff holding Panzer. Beech suggests some spells for that, but refrains as they would also further damage his friend.
As Panzer looks around at the frozen hellscape of red goo that surrounds him, he let's go of the white crystal he found. He was right to assume it's an ioun stone and it begins to whirl around his head, though he's still not sure what it does yet.
It occurs to him that the stuff holding him fast is just frozen. He finds he can easily chip away at the stuff with his adamantine kukris, and soon he is free. He has a moment of terror as bits of the frozen stuff land on his hands and armor, but he soon realizes these bits aren't causing any damage as they melt. Whatever manner of stuff this red slime was, it no longer seems a threat.
He looks around. There are no obvious doors and the floor is still covered in a slowly melting mass. If his guess of this being a disposal pit is correct, any door beneath the stuff would be pretty unusable and seems unlikely. He's pretty sure it's gonna smell really bad here in a few days.

Elyas stops Panzer and carefully examines the crystal he brought up. His keen mage senses tell him this is an ioun stone that grants the wearer the ability to regenerate 1 point of damage per 10 minutes, but it only cures damage taken while using the stone. He also offers to use a Mending spell on Panzer's armor.
Panzer is glad to know what the pearly spindle ioun stone does. He thinks his armor is functional for now. (Panzer's armor sustained 10 points of damage. How many hit points does his adamantine armor have?)
(Just to be clear, does Panzer set the stone in orbit again?)
Falco worries what might have happened to Panzer if the slime in there had been a lot deeper.
Tsak, Beech and Mak get ready to back Panzer up as he hacks through another door. Panzer gets to work and soon there is no more latch to hold the door. He pushes it open.

Falco looks around and is glad to see there are no threats here. At least none that he's aware of - he's still in the other room.
Panzer wonders about his damaged armor as he walks down into the room. He glances at the writings, and checks the ink at the desk. Most of the writings seem to be in Draconic, so he's not sure what they say at a casual glance. The ink bottles are capped and have liquid ink in them. (See my calcs below for Panzer's armor.)
Elyas, having shared the properties of the ioun stone Panzer brought up, turns his attention to the room with the writings. As he enters the room, he casts light in the room. Then he Detects Magic here, and warns others about the hazards of reading magical writings. Elyas sees two books that detect as magic in here.

Beech seems to want nothing to do with the writings in here.
Kiwina asks if it is safe to examine the writings.
Ayotnom moves in and starts reading the mundane things here - let me know if you read the two magic books.
There are some writings here in Common, but most are in Draconic, and those in Draconic seem to be written in the same hand. They seem to discuss topics including the afterlife, the planes, and woldsblood. Some go into depth about the hazards of encountering woldsblood - and it seems to be hazardous indeed to deal with the stuff (let me know if you read up on the dangers of woldsblood.)
On the desk is a journal and some notes in Draconic. These detail experiments on different people in the village using woldsblood, and you'd guess that would include those your group interacted with. It seems the author discovered that he could use woldsblood to draw life from his subjects, and he found that the younger the subject the more life he could draw out. The journal has some notes about moving to a larger town, preferably with several orphanages nearby. Perhaps some war torn regions in Asildur would serve that purpose, though no specific areas are specified.

Tsak and Panzer both find a room full of books and writing boring.
Not so for Mak. He is intrigued by the writing in Draconic and helps with sorting through what's here. He is concerned that someone was experimenting on the people of the village, and hopes that a cure might be found here.
Beech offers to identify the books if needed.
Falco moves in and uses his skills to determine what's going on with the magic books. He shares what he know with his friends.
This concerns Elyas, and the mage warns against messing with the book that radiates Evocation magic. Elyas examines the magic books with care. Ayotnom also looks over the books, trying to discern their properties.
Between Falco, Elyas and Ayotnom you are able to determine that the two books are: a Tome of Understanding +2, and a Manual of Creating a Stone Golem.
In reading through the papers here, some writings here in Common, but most are in Draconic, and those in Draconic seem to be written in the same hand. They seem to discuss topics including the afterlife, the planes, and woldsblood. Some go into depth about the hazards of encountering woldsblood - and it seems to be hazardous indeed to deal with the stuff.
Mak's reading about the info on woldsblood tells him that just being in close proximity to the stuff can momentarily daze someone. Actually coming in contact with woldsblood can cause someone to damage wisdom and constitution, and cause them to be dazed for a longer time. There are notes that suggest this effect may be temporary, so that may offer some hope to the villagers in the long run, but the writing here focus more on the effects than on recovery.
On the desk is a journal and some notes in Draconic, again in that same hand. These detail experiments on people in the village using woldsblood. Perhaps some war torn regions in Asildur would serve that purpose, though no specific areas are specified.
You gather that the author seems to be focused on some path to immortality through the use of woldsblood on the people here. His experiments are ongoing.
At this point, there is little else to be gained from further studies of these writings, though what you have learned is rather disturbing.
For what it's worth, dealing with these three rooms and their contents has taken about an hour.
