Azodall’s Tower
There’s no place like home…

DM Bob and Carla - ”There’s no place like home…”  d100=22
Tuesday February 27th, 2024 11:01:21 PM

The trek back to Heranmar is uneventful - with the exception of the spectacular disappearance of Glinda and the sudden appearance of an innocent looking Urist popping out from behind a stout tree trunk!

The guard on duty at the gate nods curtly as the party passes through, his sharp eyes taking in the Luck Makers dishevelled appearance.

The townsfolk are up and about, going through the routine activities of their daily lives. Ilthemar stands on the front steps of his shop, broom in hand, as two minotaur children squeeze past his large form and pelt down the road towards Quendock Mansion. Across town the nearly complete repair of the port side town wall can be seen rising above the roofs of the houses. The piles of snow flanking the front steps of Luck Makers House have all but disappeared.

*****

A day of two is spent in the maintenance of body, mind, and equipment. The wash tub out back is filled with hot water, and folks take their turn getting cleaned up. Urist settles into one of the second story spare rooms. Snark gets ready for a trip to the Catacombs. He visits Corinn’s Cures in the Tradehouse to enquire what might be the best time to pass through the magical entrance to the emporium. Relieved to be cured of her recent affliction, Beatrix enjoys the comfort of her private room and collection of books. Jasper reacquaints herself with the garden behind the Blue Cat and spends some time in the nearby woods decompressing.

Those who are literate in Common take turns reading through Brother Corbin’s journal. About three quarters of the way through the volume is an entry that piques the group’s attention.

’Passage through the portal was uneventful this time, though I did meet a most intriguing soul roaming the shore of the River. He was very confused - as if he did not comprehend his status and could not decide if he should cross over with the ferrymen to the afterlife, or avoid it. I fear he may be trying to escape some punishment that may be awaiting him there.’

The passage goes on to describe a human of great age - possibly a wizard - using the name Dallry Torazo.

’He said he lived in a tower in a beautiful valley, and tired from some minor exertions had decided to take a nap. One minute he was dozing, and the next, he was in the Shadowlands! After gaining his trust, I learned he had lived a reclusive existence for decades, fearful of retribution for some misdeed (or misdeeds) he seemed unable to remember. When I asked him how he managed to stay safe for so long his eyes cleared, and shone with intelligence and memories. He told me of a wondrous magical artefact he had created and which he called Azodall’s Lantern. He described a six sided lantern with anti-magic properties crafted with the lenses from the main eye of six beholders held together by precious metals inscribed with sigils to bind and preserve the artefact and enhance it’s magical properties. I tried to learn the whereabouts of the old wizard’s tower home, but capitulating to the summons of the ferryman, he turned from me and made his way onto the vessel that would carry him over to the other side.

Remembering his pledge to ‘make things right’ for Nyana, Onesimos recalls the fey creature providing a golden bell inscribed with sigils, and saying: ’when you have discovered what has created these disturbances, and stopped them, come upon the water and ring this bell.’. The cleric is conscious of the potential for future disturbances along the ley lines before a permanent solution is found., and this worries him. He decides to seek external guidance and prepares himself accordingly. A curious Jasper watches as the cleric casts his spell and asks his question. The elf hears a sighing voice inside his head Highlight to display spoiler: { ’Forwarned is forearmed…and eight armed is the octopus.’}

Onesimos emerges from his room and meets his friends in the common room of Luck Makers House, providing the answer to the Divination. "I asked 'Will it benefit Heranmar if I summon Nyana and tell her of our progress to fix the ley lines?', and the answer was ’Forwarned is forearmed…and eight armed is the octopus.’. I know the spell worked, and so the answer was truthful, at least for the next 7 days. What I don't know is if this is a warning on what Nyana may bring or that there are multiple benefits and dangers to Heranmar if we summon her with the Bell before we have stopped the disturbances."

"I think we do NOT ring the Bell until we have fixed the problem. Does anyone disagree?"

Beatrix enjoys the day or two to relax and focus on more mundane things for a day or two but gathers with the others for the consultation on the divination response. "I think it means that warning her of what is happening and the danger it involves will let her and her people better prepare for future disruptions. If we don't summon her and tell her what is going on and it happens again there will be no stopping her wrath. Besides, as a teacher I'm always in favor of sharing knowledge."

Jasper puzzles over the epigram.

"I don't fancy a rampaging cephalopod on our doorstep. The Fey are tricksy, and precise in their language. If she specifically said '...and stopped them,' and we haven't done, the town might be for tentacles. I say wait until we've met both parts of the remit.

Changing the subject: Anybody have suggestions about what to buy? Most of my spells cover a wide area and make conditions difficult for everyone, including us. So, I've been thinking I need to lean into fighting instead. Are there weapons enhancements or scrolls or antyhing of the like you'd recommend?"

(Waiting to hear from the Catacombs before distributing loot.)

As Urist works on a complex ruse to confuse her identity, the gnome is not fooled. He blinks a few times as he looks flatly at the dwarf. "You're weird. You know that, right?"

Snark hears Benni announce the result of his Divination. "Forwarned is forearmed…and eight armed is the octopus? What the heck does that mean? Maybe Flower has a sense of humor. It's just as well though - nobody wants to see that aquatic queen of destruction anyway."

"It's good to see you well Bea. Nice work Benni. I gotta go work on some stuff - if anyone needs me I'll be in my room."
He goes to his room and shuts the door. In fact, it's probably a relief to not have the surly little gnome making snarky comments for a couple days.

Snark will spend 20 hours upgrading his cloak from +2 to +3. The Spellcraft DC for shortening his time for this from 40 hours to 20 hours totals is 5+6+5=16, so auto success.

Isaac had retreated to his room for the day and was in quiet contemplation as he tried to think about what to do next. The lantern must be ancient by now, and with the only clue being "a tower in a beautiful valley" it was pretty foolish to believe it was still standing. Still, with a name like Azodall’s Lantern it would stand to reason either the Beholder who was slaughtered for its eyes was Azodall or the wizard was.
He went down stair thinking, planning to go over to Sanctuary of the Sea and ask Reshakka if he could contact the gods when he overheard the others talking about the fey Nyana. "Jasper are you sure fey are like that? If they are so exact with meaning or intent, It might be best to not contact her. But if we can give her a update and let her prepare, it's probably going to save us a headache if we aren't fast enough."

Isaac tries to remeber if fey are like how Jasper describes:Int check:3

"On the nature of battle Jasper can't druids transform? I would think an Amulet of Mighty Fists might enhance any natural attacks you might have."

Urist (AC18, HP72) (Cayzle)

Urist pauses. "Haven't I heard about a magical tower in the Cinnamon Valley?"

DM Bob and Carla - ”Sorting a few things out…”
Wednesday February 28th, 2024 11:02:48 PM

Onesimos shares the results of his commune with Flower. As is usual for such sources of advice, the message is somewhat ambiguous. The party debate whether or not they should contact Nyana with an update on their activities or wait until they have something more definite to share.

Jasper and Snark are of a mind with Benni in deferring any contact with the Oceanid, however they listen attentively as Beatrix explains that she is all for providing the fey with an update. Isaac is undecided, as he weighs the pros and cons of the situation. Unfortunately the paladin doesn’t know enough of the ways of sea fey to make an informed decision.

The half-elf muses over the puzzle of Azodall’s Lantern and wonders if the tower mentioned in the journal would still be standing after all this time. The journal is old, and the soul of the wizard would have crossed into the Shadowlands ages ago.

Urist volunteers that she might have heard lore of a tower somewhere in Cinnamon Valley, but then wizards and their towers go together like dragons and their hordes. There are probably dozens of towers throughout the Wold!

The party certainly has some time to do a little investigative work, as well as some planning, before making a conclusive decision on whether to contact Nyana…as well as what to do, or where to go next in their quest for the artefact that should hopefully deactivate the aberrant portals deep beneath the haunted Abbey.

Snark will take some breaks from his work now and then.

When the subject of contacting Nyana comes up, he has some strong feelings. "By the Crones, let's not draw that crabby woman here is we don't need to! Last time she was here, she made it clear she didn't care much what we had to say. If we summon her only to tell her we don't have a solution yet...well, I don't think that will be well recieved."

He remembers another matter that came up during the last fight. "Listen, for Benni to cast Shield Other on any of us, he needs to have matching rings. I think they're about 50 gold per pair. How's about I hold out about 200 gold from out loot to make sure we all got matching signet rings. That'll identify us as a group, and make it possible for Benni to cast that spell whenever he needs to.

So what should our symbol be on that ring. How about a four leaf clover?"

Snark will also spend some time making some herbal elixers and maybe writing a scroll or two.

(Still waiting to hear back from the Catacombs on selling a couple scrolls before I can give you a final on the loot distribution.)

Beatrix doesn't think avoiding the fey will end well but she's clearly outvoted so doesn't argue the point further. She'll go back to her routine of teaching local children as she can and poking around to talk to the ever elusive local teaching establishment. In her off time she'll go through what books she has and her own memories for any mentions of the wizard Dallry Torazo (History 19)

“Benni” AC 23/11/22 CMD 19. HP 55/ 55 Onesimos (SteveK)

Onesimos thinks hard on Beatrix' interpretation of the Divination. "That makes a lot of sense, Bea. forewarning Nyana may allow her 'family' preparations, and they may be able to do more, eightarmed than we know. And she didn't do the tidal wave that flooded Heranmar; she was only following it. I think we should tell her. Whether she is fickle or not, it is the right thing to do."

He will, however, go with the majority if Issac says 'no'.

For the rings, Benni waves off Snark's idea. "We don't all need rings, I only need two of them and give one to who I cast the spell. It is a long duration spell, so I don't need to wait until combat." And the cleric does some shopping for 4 platnium rings: 1 small, 2 medium, and 1 large.

Benni also has another idea: we have other sources of information in Heranmar! The cleric
- accompanies Snark to the Lighthouse to ask Olostim if he knows anything about Azodall’s Lantern; the travels of Brother Corbin; or the life, tower, or burial location of a Wizard named Dallry Torazo.
- accompanies Isaac to ask the same of Reshakka
- accompanies whoever wants to go with him to the Woldian League of Adventurers and ask Maethor Mahtor

Snark doesn't understand why Benni would not everyone already wearing the ring he needs. It could save two actions in a pinch. Regardless, he will purchase his own platinum ring for 25 GP just to be ready, and make sure it matches the ones Benni is getting.

As for summoning Nyana, "Suit yourself on ringing that bell, and I'll be there to back you up. But I think yer askin' fer 8 tentacles of trouble."

Urist suggests to the druid, "Miss Jasper, If you want to fight, wildshaping is your strength. I have three ideas for you. First, there is a vestment for druids. Second, there is an amulet for animals and monks. And do not forget Eberyon's Tears!

"As for the mysteries we face, well, all I have to say is that the six-sided lantern sounds just to die for!"

"Oh, and also, I have to ask everybody, and especially Snark, um, well, what is the problem for which we seek a solution?"

DM Bob and Carla - ”Sorting a few things out…”

Snark’s careful time management allows him to make significant progress towards completing his personal projects, while also spending time with his companions discussing how to strategically spend their coin. Jasper seeks the more experienced mage’s advice and it turns into a learning experience for the young druid as Urist provides some good advice as well. The troubadour asks for clarification regarding the group’s quest. It seems her multiple personalities might not be talking to each other, and the dwarf has lost the plot.

Onesimos understands the logic of Beatrix’s argument, and reverses his stand on whether or not to contact Nyana. No immediate action is taken as the cleric waits for everyone to have their say in the matter. In the interim, he suggests, they reach out to their trusted friends and gather information related to their quest.

Over the course of several days - individually or in groups - the Luck Makers seek out their friends or advisors in and around Herenmar.

Olostim is anxious to learn what the party has discovered in the Abbey. He has been pouring over the books and academic papers of his late colleague and friendTelpa Tenebris, who was researching the Abbey and its history. He is astounded to hear about the portals, the former Abbott and his self-imposed penance, and the task he has imposed on the adventurers. Olostim does not recognize the name Dallry Torazo…”But what serious student from the Star Mages Guild hasn’t heard of Azodall’s work! His texts on transmutation and abjuration are required reading!”. Olostim has no knowledge of any relic associated with the wizard, however, and seems concerned. ”You say this information was obtained by a monk while in the Shadowlands? They actually sought information from the dead? This artefact…it has powerful anti-magic properties?”. After a moment in thought, the wizard states: ”surely you must be off to Plateau City to make enquiries at the Guild!? I will provide you with a letter of introduction to the Archmage of Conjuration.” Then, as an afterthought, ”I must speak with Honora and see if she will assist with transportation. There is no time to waste…”

At the modest WLA (Woldian League of Adventurers) stall in the Tradehouse, Benni and those of the party who drop by are welcomed enthusiastically by ‘Miles’ Maethor Mahtor. The elf is agog at what the Luck Makers choose to share with him, and scribbles furiously trying to get it all down. Relatively new to the posting, and having few resources, the elf is unable to provide any information regarding any of the names provided by the adventurers, or information about lanterns created with lenses from the eyes of Beholders. ”If you’re going to Plateau City, would you mind transporting some dispatches to Headquarters? Updates about the recent storm surge…and such.”

Beatrix is welcomed by the staff at what passes for a school in the Querendock Mansion. It seems that mostly it’s the very young who attend. Parents seem content if the children learn their letters and enough maths to cover basics. Once children reach 12 or 13, they are working alongside their parents or apprenticed. In the evenings the centaur peruses her books for information that might inform their quest. She doesn’t come across anything mentioning Dallry Torazo, but she does find a brief entry for Tyron Azodall in an an ancient compendium titled: ’Wizards of the Wold’ noting the magicker was gifted in transmutation and abjuration, and had been an advisor at the Star Mages Guild.

The following day when Onesimos, Isaac and anyone else interested in paying a visit to old Reshakka at the Sanctuary by the Sea strike out in that direction, they spot a small group deep in conversation on the threshold of the sanctuary. Beatrix enjoys her time not adventuring but heads out to Olostin when the time comes. "I don't think we were in the shadowlands, rather the monk we talked to visited them once and from his description of the meeting perhaps the lantern was merely named in the honor of Azodall. Maybe the dead man was some sort of associate or apprentice of his? It's our best lead so we'll be very glad of the letter of introduction."

As for the fish fae, Beatrix suggests a compromise. "Well if we don't want to summon her here we've going to be meeting a lot of casters soon. We could ask a favor or pay for one of them to cast sending and get a brief message to her. It would let her know what we found, but not risk using up the bell if it's a one use item and also not summoning her to the area. The message could be something like:

"We found the source of the problem. Complicated to fix, may take weeks or months. Working hard to solve problem, will contact when fixed."

It'll at least let her know we're working on it and a rough timeline so she doesn't decide we've just run away and come back to town with murder in her eyes. Again."

Onesimos agrees with Beatrix on the Message, then reluctantly drops the discussion on ringing the Bell to speak with Nyana: with only 2 of 6 'yea' votes, he only hopes there won't be another surge before they can fix the problem. At least they know what the problem is, and that there is a potential solution! After speaking with Olostim and Miles, the brown-haired elf is certain a journey to Plateau City is in the future for the Luck Makers.

Without armor while in town, Benni approaches the Sanctuary of the Sea in tunic, trousers, and long vest of browns and greens with a subtle flower motif embroidered along cuffs, hems, and edges. His wicker High Woldian symbol of Flower, goddess of love, prominent around his neck. Benni schools his expression and waits patiently for introductions: any meeting of Olostim and Reshakka is bound to be significant.

The elf sighs, and while in earshot of the four, tells Urist again, having practice on reminding people without rancor because of his mission in a land where his deity is all but unknown. "You remember the storm surge that broke the Heranmar seawall and led you to travel from the quarry to town and thus we met? We learned from an Oceanid named Nyana that it also destroyed her home and was due to surges in a magical ley line from the Haunted Abbey that lies an hour's walk to the east of town. We promised Nyana that would find and fix the source, and she gave us a Bell to summon her when the work was completed."

"You, Urist/Maxwell/Glinda (you carry the same hammer, my friend), joined the LuckMakers and we made our way into the Abbey, finally finding that deep beneath the ruins, several magical ley lines meet and created six portals that used to be a boon to the monks of Kevintar, but are now only pathways for evil forces. The last abbot willingly became an archlich and has spent thousands of years warding the portals, but when he has to draw heavily form the ley lines, it creates disasters."

"He it was that told us of a magical artifact that might be able to stabilize the portals and finally be able to send him fulfilled to the Lands of Rest. Now we know that the item is called Azodall’s Lantern, made by a Wizard named Dallry Torazo from the main eye of six beholders and when lit should create an anti-magic field."

"And our lead is that Azodall is linked with the Star Mages Guild of Plateau City. That, plus messages to Plateau City from local supporters, Olostim and Miles, means we should prepare ourselves for a magical trip to the greatest known city in the Northern Continent."

Along with the three people familiar to them, the party sees a tall dark thin elf. His hair is black and long. He wears it pulled back with a black leather braided knot. It looks oiled and when you get closer you catch a faint hint of sage. He wears no armor and his dark clothing, while of high quality, seems of a bygone era. Like many elves he carries a longbow and wears a thin longsword at his side. There is an unusual yellow bloom, bright and fresh, displayed at the left side of his collar.

He stands close to and somehow subordinate to Honora; his body language displaying deference to the wise woman. Something is asked of him and he nods affirmatively with almost a bow, agreeing to the request. His head turns only slightly to better catch some of the information being recited by Benni. It is hard to tell how much he is able to pick up but it is obvious that he has heard some of what was said. (ooc:Perception 23)

At Isaac's approach the elf turns to look at the approaching party for the first time. Introducing himself he says "I am known as Makis. And before he finishes his sentence a strange look of recognition, worry, and hopefulness grows on his face and looking past Isaac he asks 'Benni?"

(For the DMs, how long will we have in town? Just trying to plan ahead, and apologies if you already clarified this and I missed it.)

Snark is busy with his work and studies, so he skips the trip to Olostim and the WLA. His quick trip to the Catacombs results in him coming back and distributing each person's share of loot. (Please see my email on this.)

He does go to the meeting with Honora.

The little gnome is just over 3' tall, his has tan skin contrasting with pale blue hair and beard. Dressed in a long, green coat trimmed in yellow that goes to his knees over brown pants, he carriers a small staff made of smooth driftwood and capped by a smooth, blue river stone. Did the swirl in that stone just move? Looking at it directly it's clearly just an opaque stone - but you could have sworn you saw a swirling motion in it.

He recognizes the others, but this Makis is new to him. He looks up at the elf, because he has to look up at everyone.

"Hey Makis. Can I call you Mak? Pleased to meet you. My name's Snark Riverstone. So, how do you know our Benni here? I think maybe Benni knows everyone."

"Hey, wait! The WLA? I'm in the WLA!" recalls Urist. She tags along with Benni, making sure her WLA badge is prominent and shiny.

The recap from Benni is very welcome. "That was an excellent oration, Brother Benni," she says. "And you told it just like an epic out of ages gone by. I used to think I was afraid of public oration, but just now, I realized I'm actually just afraid of audiences."

"Oh my gosh!" the dwarf troubadour shouts, spotting Makis. "Are you the new guy!? Please be the new guy? Because if you are the new guy, that means I'm not the new guy any more! Hi! I'm Urist!" For the record, Urist is a female dwarf, no beard, dark complexion, black hair, elfin chain, and a huge flaming mallet.

"Captain Miles!" she says, upon introduction to the local WLA leader, "It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance. It is good to have friends in high places. I have no idea how we would be planning to go to Plat City without help. Sure, we'll take your reports!"

"Benni, I could transform myself into a dolphin or a sea otter and try to contact her on her turf instead of summoning her to town. That might be more timely than sending a message from Plateau City."

She gives Makis a small smile. "Well met. I'm Jasper. I'm a druid."

Jasper is a half-elf woman with a wiry build and very long, silvery-blond hair woven through with flowers, twigs, moss, and leaves. There's a smudge of dirt on her cheek from working in her garden. A fine scimitar hangs at her side. Her voice is soft and hoarse from disuse.

And then he responds to each person in turn somewhat mechanically. You may certainly call me Mak Mr. Riverstone, though Makis is already somewhat shortened from Pharmakis. But brevity can be important at times.

And to Jasper he bows and says Well met to you lady druid. I too am a shape shifter of sorts, though less versatile than you I am sure. I would be pleased to show you if time and opportunity permits.

And finally he turns back to his brother. It is good to see you too big brother. While my wandering days are behind me it seems I am still called upon to travel by those I serve. I did not know you were in this part of Wold either. Perhaps our meeting here was not entirely by chance?

She's a centaur with a dappled grey horse half and a dark skinned top half. Her hair is a light blond, almost white, both and in a pony tail, matching color and style with her horse tail. She wears clothing on both halves, bright blue today, and both vest and horse blanket are full of books, scrolls, ink, and other scholarly tools. A pair of reading glasses completes the image.

Sunday March 3rd, 2024 9:32:10 PM

The ‘Luck Makers’ make their way across the wide street that divides their refurbished rooming house from the Sanctuary by the Sea across the way. As they walk, Onesimos provides the absent minded Urist with a brief, but thorough review of the adventures that have brought the party to their current mission. The wizard Olostim, the aged priest Reshakka, and the priestess of the Crones are in deep conversation. Included in that circle is a very slender stranger, his long dark hair held back with leather worked in an intricate knot. His body language demonstrates a marked respect for Honora, as he bends eloquently in acknowledgement as she speaks to him.

Isaac calls out a cheery greeting, causing the stranger to turn around. Conflicting emotions flit across the newcomer’s face as whilst introducing himself, he looks past the paladin, and spots…”Benni?”

Before either brother can say more, Snark asks if it’s okay to abbreviate Makis, and enquires as to his connection with the cleric of Flower. Urist is effusive with her greetings, anticipating the ‘new guy’ might take away some of the pressure on her. Jasper smiles shyly at the tall newcomer, and provides her name as well as her her vocation. Beatrix brings up in the rear, preoccupied with the mysteries of the group’s mission.

”Friends, may I present my brother by birth, Pharmakis.” volunteers Benni once the commotion of first introductions is over. The two, so similar, and yet so different - school their features and regulate their voices. It’s impossible to determine what emotions either are experiencing - other than surprise!

Olostim breaks the uneasy silence, gesturing to the Luck Makers to follow as he places a hand on Honora’s shoulder and guides her into the temple, with Reshakka leading the way. ”Honora has agreed to support the ‘project’, but asks that you take ‘this one’” he gestures in the direction of Makis before continuing ”with you as the ‘eyes and ears’ of the coven.” The wizard chuckles , ”but let’s take this inside where we can discuss the particulars in privacy.”

Onesimos gives a small smile at Pharmakis' observation and moves to stand with his brother, speaking elvish. Highlight to display spoiler: {"The Wold ever has a purpose, at least we agree on that. And we agree that there must be champions of Good to shepherd those purposes. It is good to see you again, though I never expected either of us to have travelled such a great distance to do it!"} The cleric's gestures are welcoming and genuine, but with a hesitancy that was not present when Jasper, Beatrix, or Urist had met the LuckMakers. Benni switches to Common to return to a general conversation in this meeting of common purpose. "We also agree that very few things in this Wold happen by 'chance', although you may observe the people of Heranmar have a much different view of luck."

Then Olostim speaks of 'the eyes and ears’ of the coven, and the elf's green eyes darken. As they walk into the Sanctuary, Benni moves so when they are inside, he is standing with the LuckMakers and apart from Honora and Makis. He gives a 'please continue' gesture, sure that the cleric, wizard, and bloodwitch have more to reveal.

"I suppose I could get directions from some of the other sea creatures. You're right though; we don't know if Nyana's realm is nearby, either geographically or a planar level. I was assuming her domain is close enough that we're effectively neighbors." She shruges.

"It's not a completely unreasonable thought, seeing as the Abbey's mess is affecting her, too."

She notices the shift in Benni's demeanor. Hmm. She waits to hear what more Olostim, Makis, and Honora have to say.

Brother by birth and not just brother? That's not weird or anything. Snark speaks elvish, and it doesn't take much insight to know there's something going on between these two brothers. But the gnome is not stupid enough to insert himself. At least not today.

Beatrix and Isaac complete their introductions, then pause.

There’s something going on between the brothers, that even those who understand elvish can sense. A certain reserve on Benni’s part and maybe something to prove by Makis?

Jasper, Snark and Beatrix notice the tension, but keep their thoughts to themselves. Urist attempts to lighten the atmosphere with some riddles that hint at her companions’ vocations.

Reshakka leads the way into the temple and towards an alcove at the back. At this time of day there aren’t many petitioners to the various gods or powers, but what few folks there are make their escape, twisting rings, rubbing amulets, and making warding signs as they give the new arrivals the ‘side eye’ on the way out. The old liontaur cleric slumps down onto the floor and folds his front paws together, looking like a benevolent sphinx and nods to the benches lining the alcove. His eyes close as if preparing for a nap, before a rumble escapes his lips. ”Say your piece, Olostim.”

The wizard nods, and explains: “there isn’t time for a lengthy sea voyage, and besides until the docks are repaired the larger sailing vessels are avoiding Heranmar. I…we…believe teleportation is the only way.” He glances at Honora before continuing: ”the town’s just getting over a disaster and few folks understand what’s happening. It’s just ‘bad luck’ to them. Anyway, we think it’s best that the fewer folks that ‘know’, the better. Honora and her sisters have agreed to provide the materials…and the site.”

Honora turns her unnerving gaze on each member of the Luck Makers before settling on Benni. Irises so pale a blue as to make the orbs appear white, and tiny pinpricks of black to indicate the direction of her focus. The First Daughter takes her turn addressing the party in a whispery voice:”the Five Crones are patronesses of the Gateway Downs and Heranmar. They are entreated by those who make their home in these lands…they listen…when the gods do not.” Her voice trails off…before resuming. ”The Heranmar coven is concerned about the ley line disturbances….” Her gaze lowers to fix on Snark, as with a sighing breath she continues: ”Makis has been chosen to accompany you on your travails…to assist…and to look after you.”

Olostim breaks in: ” the day after tomorrow? Does that give you enough time to prepare? There’s no telling how long you’ll be gone so you might want to make arrangements for the upkeep of your house…”

A rumble comes from the large form of the liontaur - eyes closed, but ears on the twitch: ”any questions?”

"There once was a dwarf named Urist,
Who's motives were not the purist.
One day his jokes
Angered some folks
And someone hit him with their furist. No, with their fist. No, that don't rhyme. Anyway, I think you get the punch line."

When Honora mentions that Makis is here to look after us, he replies, "Yeah, we prolly do need some looking after. But you know Mak, you'd best keep your eye on Bea, she's always charging after one thing or another. And I'm still a little fuzzy about the whole coven thing. What sorta coven?"

Snark adds to the larger group, "Too bad we don't got time for a sea voyage, I like being on a ship. But teleportin's good too. Plateau City, eh? Star mages? This all sounds pretty great! Anything we oughta be prepare for when we get to Plateau City?"

Onesimos gives a tilt of his head at Honora, acknowledging the implied rebuke without accepting it. It is certainly true that the cleric is a stranger in a strange land, and knows little of the history of the Gateway Downs. He also accepts that immortals that are not gods do have power and some are protective of the peoples within their purview. He responds to her and to Makis at the same time. "Each person has the opportunity to learn and support love of self, others, and community. The path matters less than the destination."

That came out stiffer than intended, Benni chides himself. He's going to have to try better than that!

To get on more comfortable footing, Benni concentrates on plans. "A day, yes, we can be ready. Maggie has great contacts and can give us a recommendation for a watchman as she ensures the House is put away for an extended time away: there is no expectation that we will be able to get a second greater teleportation to return quickly."

"I and Makis have both been to Plateau City, although for me it has been about 120 years ago, and I was hardly older than a child, so my memory may be imperfect. But from what I do remember, Plateau City is divided into more than a dozen 'Quarters', each as big as many cities, and on the whole, larger and more populous even than Hook City!"

Benni, after the meeting, meets with Maggie to 'mothball' Luck Makers House, and also plans a visit to the Catacombs.

If the cleric meant his statement as a rebuke Makis did not react to it. We each must walk our own path and the journey is at least as important as the destination. he thinks to himself. I was younger than you when we visited that metropolis Benni, and so recall it less well. My travels have not brought me back to it.

Turning to Urist Makis smiles and says I'll give your riddle a go. Isaac is the one with the alignment challenge, though I bet he is quite strait as such things go. And Benni would be the one concerned with life, though I hope to be of help in that area. Snark is the only vertically challenged person here and he strikes me as one who laughs easily. Beatrix the teacher is certainly worth the title of dollartaur, if she desires it. And Jasper told me her class at our initial meeting. I too can have paws and might try to catch a fish, though a much smaller one I am sure. Would you like to see?

Addressing the group Makis explains I only need to fetch Elanshee and I will be ready to depart. As a wanderer I keep my gear packed in in my haversack as a matter of practicality. It seems we have two nights before we depart. Perhaps those of you not too busy might sup with me this evening? If we are to travel together it would be wise to understand each of our strengths a little better, no?

DM Bob and Carla - ”Karma is a cat…”

Urist’s riddles break some of the tension as Makis gamely plays along and guesses at who’s who. Snark rises to the troubadour’s challenge, and though his rhyming ditty is clever - the mage should probably stick to his adventuring job.

Jasper plays show and tell with the newcomer, and the Bloodwitch shape-shifts into a black cat with yellow-gold eyes.

Felling a little out of his element, Benni isn’t his usual diplomatic self, but finds comfort in making a plan and putting his words into action.

Isaac has a few questions, and puts them to the trio of Olostim, Honora, and Reshakka.

Olostim reassures the paladin that by using a teleportation circle he has every confidence the magic will drop the party safely straight into the Star Mages Guild in Plateau City. He’ll provide the group with a letter of introduction to Boden Halistham, the Archmage of Conjuration at the Guild. ”You can start your enquiries there. If you need a place to stay, there are places around Adventurers Square or someone at the Guild might have a suggestion.”. Honora answers Isaac in her whispery voice: ”Makis will bear witness to what you do, and help where he can. It is not his role to direct your actions nor judge them.”

It’s confirmed that the teleportation will take place at the standing stones the day after tomorrow. The party should be packed and ready to go at dawn’s first light.

A last minute trip to the Catacombs, saying goodbye to the Druid Wood, shuttering Luck Maker’s House, a convivial meal at the Blue Cat Tavern, collecting the dispatches for delivery to the WLA headquarters - the Luck Makers have a very busy 36 hours before their departure.

(OOC: teleportation will occur in Thursday’s DM post!)

At some point he takes Mak aside from the others. "Hay Mak, can I talk to you for a moment?"

"Look, even though you and Honora have been avoiding my questions about this coven business, I figure it can only mean one thing. You're a bloodwitch. As you probably know, bloodwitches don't enjoy the best reputation, what with their meddling with Woldsblood and generally breaking all the rules when it comes to spellcasting. But you're Benni's brother, and I like that guy. So, you're welcome to travel with us, but you should understand that just like Honora said you're here to watch us, I'm also keeping my eye on you. The little gnome will later speak with Maggie. "Hey Maggie, I know Benni already told you what's happening, and we may be gone for a while. Here, I want you to have this - in case you need to attend to something with our place. Or for whatever. We appreciate you and the work you do taking care of us."

The party breaks up, each to attend to some last minute personal affairs.

Jasper locates an entry to the magical emporium that is the Catacombs and makes her first visit.

Urist puts the finishing touches on a selection of homemade scrolls.

Snark makes sure he has a few creature comforts tucked away is his travelling pack.

Isaac sends a note to Sheriff Eugene.

Benni invites his brother to the house he shares with the five other Luck Makers and offers temporary accomodations until it’s time to depart for Plateau City. Makis gives his brother a genuine smile, liking the idea very much. After a tour of the refurbished rooming house, the cleric shows his brother to a spare room on the second floor and leaves him some time to get sorted, while he goes downstairs to have a word with their housekeeper. Snark stops by on the way to his own room, and has a few words with the Bloodwitch. The blue haired gnome isn’t at his most diplomatic, but his affection for the cleric of Flower is obvious, despite the curt words exchanged with Makis.

Benni and Snark make arrangements with their housekeeper, Maggie, for the care and oversight of their home during their absence. When introduced to Makis she bobs a curtsy and fiddles absentmindedly with the ring on a cord around her neck. ”Seven for breakfast then?” she asks more as confirmation than an actual question.

As evening approaches, the party make their way over to the Blue Cat Tavern. Ralphus Bottim is behind the bar pulling pints, his wife Ginifred emerging from the kitchen - a tray laden with plates piled high with salted, crispy fried potatoes and roasted chicken. Miles, sitting at the bar, is halfway through his meal. The off duty WLA representative has his lute with him, so there’s bound to be music later. Old Jonesy is holding court with his usual cronies at their regular table. A few of the off duty guards, including Wren, have got a game of cards going.

The party finds a large communal table to share and place their orders. Beatrix lets her friends know she has some knowledge of Plateau City having grown up their. She knows all the best places to eat!

Onesimos takes the the days to prepare: himself for the teleportation circle, the town for an extended absence of the Luck Makers, and for to get the team and Makis up to speed with each other.

Himself is just a little shopping and packing his Pants O Plenty with items that may be useful.

The town is also easy, though takes a little more time. Benni makes appointments to visit with Maggie and her children, Miles at the WLA, Reshakka and the Sanctuary of the Sea (where he leaves a wooden woven High Woldian symbol of Flower on the Gift Wall), and a meeting with whatever Town Council members available at Quendock Mansion. He counts on his friends to settle with their own town contacts...

For Makis, Benni notes there is some friction between him and Snark, but chooses to not say anything and allow time to provide opportunities. Over the course of a couple days, Benni tells his brother of the character of Heranmar (good if superstitious), the environs around the town (an unusual amount of undead, fey, and haunts), and the people. One such talk is about Luck Makers House and Maggie. "The town presented us an empty place that was solid but needed some fixing in reward for several adventures we had: finding the kidnapped Lucky Fish, rescuing the Spirit Woad Hunters, defeating an undead Pirate Captain, and rescuing some missing children from swamp creatures. Maggie's husband was killed by the undead Pirate Captain, and we like to take care of her and her two kids as much as she takes care of us. In fact, all of us have found little niches in the town."

"Isaac works the the town guard, Beatrix as a school marm, and Urist with the dwarves of the quarry just north of town. Jasper has been tending a garden behind the Blue Cat Tavern and also ranging into the east forest called Peerimus' Grove. And our caustic gnome, Snark, is a good soul and well meaning if rather blunt, well, he and Olostim the Wizard (who lives in a lighthouse west of town) seem to have a magical partnership going."

"As for me, after I joined the acolytes of Flower",
(a frown momentarily passes Benni's face at a past remembrance) "I stayed in Amberdale for the next century until I was sent on the long sea voyage to the Southern Continent on a mission to teach about 'love', and that 'love' is much more encompassing than what most peoples believe. And here I am. It is a good thing I am an elf, because I now believe it may take multiple generations of humans to make a lasting change."

Thursday March 7th, 2024 2:59:59 PM

Addressing Snark, Makis replies Mr. Riverstone you surprise me. I thought you were all jests and smiles. I suppose it is good that you have a serious side and concern for one's friends can be a good thing. But just because I show deference to my superiors does not mean I am avoiding your questions. If you you have a question for me ask it now. I am surprised by your strong reaction to my vocation. Frankly I expected such nonsense about meddling with Woldsblood and generally breaking all the rules from my brother and not from a fellow arcane caster. I will ask that you judge me by my actions and not the superstitions of the uneducated. I did not ask for this assignment but will fulfill it to the best of my ability, which includes observing you. I hope that you will come to value my presence for what I can offer your party but also ask that you remember you came to us for help, and not the other way around.

Makis enjoys the time with his brother but initially avoids the topic of his vocation. But when Benni opens up bout his past Makis spills out his reply When I had the falling out with our parents about seminary and the church I guess I rebelled a little, You were already gone from home but I felt I was still living in your shadow. And a big shadow it was. In our parent's eyes you could do no wrong and even the slightest transgression brought out comparisons of how you might have handled the situation better. Benni, it was hard. And I never felt the same call to the church that moved you. So I left. I wandered for a time. My company was sometimes unsavory. I know I drank too much for a while. But I found my path when I found the Crones. I actually met one of the 5, the Crone of Sorrow. How many mortals can say that? Their negative reputation is undeserved. I am proud to support them and call them my patrons.[ And I am glad to have the chance to travel with you to show you what all I have learned in their service.

Jasper arrives at the pub wearing a VERY beautiful new +2 Belt of Physical Might, tooled with a motif of oak acorns, ironwood graining, and maple leaves. In addition to being a work of art, it bestows enhancements to Strength and Dexterity. How about that!

"You GUYS. I went to The Catacombs and I talked to strangers who aren't animals without Benni or Snark there for support and it was OK! I didn't die! Yay, me!

I also foraged for moss-- good for wound dressings, that-- and cobwebs, you can never have enough cobwebs, and more berries for Goodberry and also just eating-- raspberries, blackberries, cloudberries, I even got some thimbleberries to share with mice, and mushrooms-- no chantarelles I'm afraid, but I did find a few oysters-- and I picked up a few perfect stones for my sling and I also sat in a sunbeam. I'm ready for tomorrow!"

She notices Makis is seated at the table and promptly shuts up. A burning blush spreads across her cheekbones. "Um. I'll go... get a pint."

Isaac is enjoying the fried potatoes at the blue cat tavern as he listens to Makis's story he asks " What was she like? The Crone of Sorrow. I hear about them but never get much in info besides their old and powerful." In his letter to the sheriff he asked if he had any contacts he knew in Plateau City and to keep an eye out for any more sightings of ghosts while they were away.

Urist takes a bit of time to put Arcane Marks on a few key locations. "My maw always said I'd make a mark on the Wold!"

The troubadour's marks are invisible. Except for one.

Really, she is thinking about how maybe these marks will be useful for centering teleports and scryings in the future.
