The Mystery

Burton: Asks Harmony what she knows of the murder/s& what type of magic she practices. Conducts extensive research then offers to grab some food with Harmony.
Fingers: Sees company at the Patch door.
Lothlo: Asks if Rhys is expecting company.
Kwarsk: Agrees with Paige that heading back to the Patch is the next course of action.
Naithi:. Accompanying Fingers also spots the people at the door.
Paige: Thanks Brother Kyle for the information supplied and suggests heading back to the Patch.
Rhys: Answers the door.
Zarsellet: Likes the idea of “The Ballad of Vandy”. Yet remains curious about some of the unanswered questions.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Paige, Kwarsk are accompanied back to the Patch by Zarsellet’s efforts to compose a suitable tale of Vandy’s heroics. As luck would have it, they arrive just as Fingers and Naithi do, albeit those two are closer to the door.
Fingers and Naithi readily recognise the visitors as a quartet of beastfolk. Naithi further notes that they are of disparate types: a somewhat portly rabbitfolk who seemed older than the others, a solid-looked and serious faced Badgerfolk, a lithe goatfolk with impressive horns and a nervous Squirrel folk with long red hair. She looked about constantly and did not fail to notice Naithi and Fingers.
The door then opened to reveal Rhys with Lothlo at his shoulder. Rhys notes the worried expressions and beckons them in. As the beastfolk somewhat uncertainly file in and try to decide where is best to stand, the rest of the Patchers follow. The significant number of large folk makes the beastfolk more nervous. The little squirrelfolk edges closer to Naithi, eyes wide, seemingly looking for sanctuary of some sort.
Introductions are quickly made and upon learning that everyone present is a Patcher, the beastfolk relax noticeably.
”Greetings to you, heroes. My name is Lars and ‘’’ well, I’m here to speak on behalf of our community. You see, that’s because we find ourselves in terrible trouble.” There followed some nodding and muttered agreement from the others.
”Sorry. Where are my manners? Like I said, I’m Lars. This is Remmie (Goat), that’s Emmut (Badger) and there’s Dasha (squirrel). Like I said, we have a BIG problem. It’s bad – real bad. So obviously we went to the authorities. Yeah, we sought help with others of the big folk, but most aren’t interested or able; that’s particularly true of the guards. They were really sympathetic, but apparently some fella called Duncan – if I remember aright – has them all running around on some special ‘diplomatic’ mission. Important trade deal or some such. As if that’s more important than…. Well, we heard rumors of heroes in this part of the City, helping others in need. We were hoping that you’d be them and that ….Can you help us?
You see, we have a small community here in the City - in Outcast Quarter and we have been under attack: vicious, terrible attacks! Several of our friends and family have been murdered. No doubt the one responsible thinks no one will help those of our kind, as we often go unnoticed.”
The beastfolk shifted nervously, except Emmut, who looked angry. He seemed itching to say something, but bit his tongue. The others looked up at Rhys and the others expectantly. The look that Dasha gave Naithi was more imploring.
Burton’s eyes grew tired from all the reading. Harmony’s enthusiasm waned and she dozed prettily as he continued his research. She had however, confirmed that she’d heard nothing of any murders, but then ‘no one tells me anything’ was her justification for that. She’d confirmed that she liked all magic, but her talent lay in sorcery rather than books, albeit she was trying to master both. She declined food, stating that her mother had hers waiting for her. Armed with information, Burton heading back to the Patch to report his findings.
Burton Highlight to display spoiler: { now knew that dead creatures could be reanimated as spies as well as guards. He also knew that there were apparently many different creatures and abominations that delighted in taking the flesh off their victims.}
Burton thanks Harmony for her help and gives the girl a gold piece and wishes her luck with her studies, if she needs any help with any arcane study he can be found at the Patch. Burton decides to skips food at the guild thinking that he can get some at the Patch and heads back.
If he arrives without incident Burton will walk in to the Patch. Spotting the newcomers Burton quips; "[b]I see the locks not been fitted yet."
If he doesn't arrive without incident Burton will take the shortest route by well lit streets back to the Patch.
"He bit through the leg bone of a skeleton, but tasted only sorrow. Vandy learned that undead have no marrow...."
Seeing Fingers and Naithi Zarsellet lets his cantrip expire and the Lyre disappear. "Hi guys. We got a little more history, but it seems Vandy was a very dedicated and lucky dog. And his master really cared for him. Special, but not celestial. Hey, maybe I can work that rhyme into my song! 'Vandy was special, but not celestial.' That could work. Just need to flesh it out and adjust the melodic line a bit. It's shorter than the other lines so maybe stretch out the syllables a bit...."
Seeing the beastfolk Zarsellet finishes his notes and tucks his book away. He keeps his mouth shut though, listening to the details of the other small folk. Once the story is told he considers the details. Duncan again?
"Of course we can help! My friends here are friends to all sizes of people. They don't believe anyone should be 'overlooked! Come inside where we can be comfortable and discuss this without a city full of witnesses."
"Several of the team are out, looking in to other happenings. But they should be back soon. We'll need all of the details, and should go and examine the places where the crimes were committed. Were there any witnesses."
Burton stands up straight and bows to the beastfolk; "My apologies, Fingers is correct I was rude, it's been a long day. Would you be here about the murder of some of your people? I have been hearing about such things today, is it true that the victims might have part of the skin removed?"
Lothlo (WillD) -- AC: 20/15/16, HP: 51/51, CMD: 21 ()
Lothlo listens to the beast folk discuss the attacks in the Outcast Quarter.
Having been kidnapped by orcs and held as a slave for a period of time, hearing that there is a group of already disenfranchised people being targeted hits a special nerve with him. He runs his finger along his bow string and asks them a few questions about the terrible person carrying out these atrocities.
You mentioned the one responsible, does that mean it is a single attacker? Or is it a group that's carrying out these attacks? What kind of weapons are being used in the attacks? Is there anything else you can tell us about the victims or the how they are being targeted?
Kwarsk waits until all enter, then he looks around outside carefully and once satisfied that no one is tailing the beastfolk he comes inside and closes the doors behind him.
Kwarsk listens quietly to the beastfolk explain their plight. Kwarsk inwardly reflects, as they beastfolk go on, realizing that he once thought his family had had it bad, almost losing to an adversary in dwarven court, but he is convicted now that his family's experience is as gravel in a landslide compared to the beastfolk's plight - of little to no weight.
Rhys listens as the beastfolk describe their plight. He can’t help but wonder who gains from all of this discord. What role does the mysterious Duncan have to play? Might he deliberately be setting this up as some kind of diversion? And what about these diplomatic errands he has officials running around. Something nags at the back of the elf’s mind.
Paige listens to what Lars has to say. When he and the other beastfolk have had their say, she asks if the attacks have targeted any specific family or trade in which the individuals might have been involved. Also, have there been any witnesses to the attacks who might describe the attackers?
Naithi's expression darkens as she listens to Lars' description of the attacks on their community. She glances over at Dasha, meeting her gaze with a determined look in her eyes.
I'm so sorry to hear about what's happening to your people, she says softly. No one deserves to live in fear like this. We'll do everything we can to help stop these attacks and bring justice to those responsible.
Naithi leans forward, resting her elbows on her knees as she sits on Camalayas back, a position that only a young girl could be comfortable in, addresses the group. Her eyes are bright with determination, and her voice carries a sense of urgency.
Turning back to Lars, she asks, Do you have any idea who might be behind this? Or why they're targeting your community specifically?
When they talk about the difficulty they have had "big folk" she adds Camalayas and I were among the first beast folk to this land through the Veil of Shadows, and we have had to deal with all sorts of misconceptions and assumptions. It's not easy being different, is it? [b]
She reaches out to pat Dasha's shoulder comfortingly. [b]But we're here to listen, and to help however we can.
ooc: As a lost child Naithi has a penalty to diplomacy checks with people and other races are wary of beast folk, so she can relate.
Burton: Arrives back at the Patch to see many people gathered there. He apologises for his witticism.
Fingers: Scolds Burton for his witty quip.
Lothlo: Asks a series of pertinent questions.
Kwarsk: Empathises with the beastfolk.
Naithi:. Asserts hewr willingness to help and understands the beastfolk’s problems.
Paige: Listens carefully and asks salient questions.
Rhys: Ponders Duncan’s role in all of this.
Zarsellet: Readily offers to help.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

There were a great many questions fired at Lars and initially he seemed overwhelmed. He asked for some water. Once that was forthcoming he used that and the opportunity it gave to compose his thoughts before replying.

”Forgive my delay in answering your questions. Honestly, I hadn’t expected much in the way of help. Your enthusiasm is ….well, wonderful, but unexpected and overwhelming. I’m – WE’RE all very grateful. Now, as to those answers.” he took a deep breath and exhaled slowly before beginning.

Hmm, So, it’s always best to start at the beginning, but that’s the problem: we don’t actually know when this started. People just went missing. That was just under a week ago, People come and go. It’s concerning, but nothing – usually - to worry about. The other night, a dogfolk was savagely killed and left in an alley. Well, most of him was left. Then last night a catfolk was killed: Menii Grey, a gentle soul with not a bad word for anyone.
Yes, it was only last night! I can show you where it happened if that would help?”[/n] He asked hopefully. [b]”Honestly, we’re not entirely sure what to do though, as we’ve never come across anything like this before. But, well, moving on. Let me see if I have all of your questions in mind.
The ‘one’. I did say that, yes, but I suppose it could just as easily be more than one. That’s not something we want to contemplate. ‘One’ would be bad enough! More, would be dreadful.
Weapons? I don’t know. I helped take Menii to the Dark Cathedral early this morning. To me, it was difficult to tell. There was a lot of blood, but I suppose it might have been a weapon….or a claw.
Oh, and the ‘crime scene’ – yes, yes, I can, as I say, take you there immediately if you wish? You know, before anything changes. I think that would be important, yes?
As to witnesses – none that I know of. Folk have been too scared to go out.
Links? No, none that I can see. They are beastfolk and that’s it.
Was there anything else?”
He looked from one face to the next, hope filled his eyes.

Lothlo notices that the body was brought to the Dark Cathedral, but isn't quite sure what that would mean in this part of the Wold.

Does the Dark Cathedral happen to have a coroner that is looking into this? Or would they be preparing the body for burial? If there is a coroner it would probably be best to let them finish their report before heading over, but if the body is just being prepared for burial we may want to head their first so we can check the body for any clues before they are cleaned up.

Naithi:. Offers to help in any way she can.
Paige: Finds the situation incredulous and seeks further opinion.
Rhys: Informs that they’ll head to the murder site after gleaning such additional information that they can.
Zarsellet: Departs with Lothlo for the Dark Cathedral.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Lars looks up at Rhys. ”Of, sorry – Menii is – I mean, WAS, female. She was returning home after buying a few groceries, Her basket was still at the ...spot we found her.” he sets his teeth grimly and continues. This time he turned to Paige. ”There may be more than two.”
Emmut then spoke up. ”Hard to say exactly, but this stuff – it’s happening under cover of night. So, folk have stopped going out at night. Makes sense. Now, we’ve found no witnesses so far, but we’ve not done much more than try to give Menii a dignified end to her life. So, perhaps there’s some near where she died might have seen or heard something. Course, if you going to question them folk, it’d be best if it was with her.” He jerked a thumb at Naithi. ”Tall folk generally only speak to us if they want money or to sell you religion.” He frowned to emphasize his point.
Lars then picked up where he left off. He swallowed nervously before speaking ”There was a lot of flesh taken from her body. As to the time delay, I couldn’t say. Perhaps you’ll have a better idea? I mean, isn’t that what you do? I’m not an adventurer. How you do these things is far beyond anything I can even guess at. Still, if time is of the essence, perhaps we can talk as we walk. While some go to the Dark Cathedral, the rest of us could go to the murder site?”
Emmut then turned to Lothlo. ”Don’t think it’s much more than preparing her body to be honest. If you want to learn what you can, like you say, heading there now might be worth while, because they never said anything about investigating her cause of death.” He then rubbed his chin. ”Bad business this. Could be that whatever did - is doing this is also intimidating or eliminating witnesses. Might be some. Might be they’ve left – wisely. I don’t know. What I DO know is that a lot folk are scared – really scared and from what I’ve seen, for good reason.”
Having heard all this, Zarsellet and Lothlo exit to head back to the Dark Cathedral. As they are about to close the door behind them, Emmut shouts: ”Ask for Nellie. That’s who we dealt with.”
Kwarsk runs through meditative mantras of Pantheon in his mind, readying himself to be on peak alert as a guard for the group heading to visit the crime scene.
Kwarsk says, "Paige, let's all continue this conversation on the way to the crime scene. Given the recent rain, I'd rather get there sooner rather than later if we plan to learn anything significant.
Paige looks from Zarsellet to Kwarsk. One want’s her to go to the cathedral, and the other to the crime scene. The cleric addresses the blue haired gnome in a low voice. Her body is turned in such a way as to block what she says from the beastfolk visitors. ”I have a spell that grants the semblance of life to a corpse allowing us to ask a question or two.” The red head winces, before continuing. ”It’s not something I fancy using. The body needs to be mostly intact and the corpse can only speak about what they knew in life. Answers are brief and cryptic.”. The half elf looks at her feet, before returning to face the bard, ”I’d rather not, if you don’t mind?”
Answering the dwarf, Paige agrees to accompany him and the beastfolk to the Outcast Quarter. ”I’d like to find out more about this diplomatic mission or trade deal that Duncan has the Guard working on. Maybe we can swing by the nearest guard station afterwards?” The cleric is like a dog with a bone when it comes to Duncan!
They'll be wrong, of course. You're much more capable than the typical resident there, and at least two of our group will be lurking in the shadows nearby.
Burton: Asks Paige to check on Menii after grabbing some much needed food.
Fingers: Tells Naithi about his idea to use her as bait.
Lothlo: Introduces himself and asks to speak with Nellie.
Kwarsk: Composes himself ready to lead the way.
Naithi: Has no issues with Fingers’ plan.
Paige: Elects to go to the crime scene whilst pondering Duncan’s part in all this – if any.
Rhys: Looks for guardsmen as he heads to the crime scene.
Zarsellet: With Lothlo heads to the Dark Cathedral to make enquiries.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The Patchers separate. Lothlo and Zarsellet head to the Dark Cathedral. The rest, included the assorted beastfolk, head to the scene of the crime. To both groups it’s immediately apparent that the rain will not have helped preserve evidence, but it ought to have deterred many from venturing forth and so compromise what little evidence is left.

As the larger group heads towards the Outcast Quarter Rhys spots a lone guardsman. The stout, bearded man is puffing and cursing under his breath as he pushes a laden sack barrow up an incline. Rhys greets him and enquires as to what has all the guards working in such an unusual manner. The guardsman does not offer his name, but the reason for that is soon very obvious: he’s most unhappy with his current ‘duty’.

”I didn’t sign up to push sack carts around. I should be patrolling and stopping criminals. How am I supposed to protect people by shoving this stuff around? He’s loathe to elaborate as he feels it would compromise his instructions and possibly even jeopardise the well-being of his colleagues. ”Look, I got to get going, but I’m not telling you anything you don’t already know when I tell you it’s all to do with this blinking trade envoy malarkey. How Duncan swung it that it’s all taking place in his house, I don’t know.” He then starts pushing the cart again, all the time cursing Duncan.

Lars leads the group on eventually heading into the Outcast Quarter. The area is replete with narrow alleys. So close are the upper storeys that those opposite can in places reach out and shake hands. Such areas are unhelpful to Fingers as he often finds it necessary to stoop to navigate such small and low spaces. It being daytime, a good number of beastfolk are out and about their respective business. Woodsmoke, fresh bread and the distant smell of smoked fish clings to the air. Eventually Lars stops at the end of a small alleyway.

[b]“It was here. This was where we found her.”
He informed them. The other beastfolk bowed their heads in respect, albeit Emmut ground his teeth as he did so. All immediately see that blood has been spilled. It stains the floor of the alley some twenty- twenty five paces in.

”This happened last night. Menii was coming back from shopping. We found her provisions. This weren’t a robbery.” Emmut told them.

”We didn’t get much chance to ask folks hereabouts. Maybe in the light of day a few might feel more willing to open up, especially as we have Miss Naithi here. If she’s brave enough to pursue this killer, I reckon that might stiffen a few spines, so to speak.” Offered Emmut.

~~~
Over at the Dark Cathedral, Zaersellet is met with some head scratching. ”Nope, not had any dogfolk in that I can recall. Hold on though, Nellie’s around I’ll go speak with her. Wait here, please.” The pimply youth then scurried away.
It was a full ten minutes later that a short and stocky woman with short, black curly hair and almost as black skin ambled up to them. With no preamble she thrust forward a hand.
[b]”Nellie. What can I do for you?”
She asked.
Upon hearing their request, she frowned and nodded.
”Best come with me then.” She led the way; down into the cool of the cathedral’s catafalque. It was only the mentioning of Lars’ name that secured them access to the body.
”You threw me a bit: Menii is a woman and a CATfolk – not dog.” She explained the delay thusly. "Ain’t got much to tell you as I was just about to start my work.” Around a twisting maze of pillars she leads them until they find a small body hidden by a bloodied sheet. She peels the sheet partially off the body, but only sufficiently to preserve the dead woman’s modesty. It takes no great skill or insight to immediately note that some parts of her look as if the flesh was torn off. Other parts appear to have been precision cuts.
An examination reveals the following with passed skill checks:
Burton looks at the scene he hopes the others looking at Menii's body comes back with something useful. To his untrained eye it suggests a weapon wheedling individual with a beast companion. But to confirm that they really need information from the people checking out Menii's body.
Thank you so much for letting us have a look.
Lothlo looks at the mutilated body for clues as to what happened.
Well, I must admit I'm out of my element when it comes to things like this. It looks like they might have been strangled on top of everything else...
Something catches Lothlo's eye
I might not be much of a medic, but I am a highly skilled craftsman. And these cuts here are far too precise to have been made my claws or the like, these were made by some sort of tool... I'm not sure anything in my bow making kit would match, maybe some sort of leather working tool?
Is there anything special about the location of those more precise cuts? Do they look like they were surgically removing something? Or perhaps attacking vital spots on the body?
Zarsellet hangs his head when Nellie corrects them. "Of course. I'm so sorry. Just hearing about this upset and mixed me up. Menii Grey was the female Catfolk, and the latest victim. The previous killing was a male Dogfolk. And they said that there were some that just went missing. We're trying to learn anything about the killing that might lead back to the killer before more are attacked."
He looks at the body and just nods at Lothlo's comments. "I agree, but like you I'm not really a trained healer. I wish Paige could have come with us. I've seen a number of bodies but just seeing the wounds, the aftermath of the struggle as it were, just doesn't tell me that much. Those cuts there were made by a sharp tool, not claws. But why do that after strangling her?"
The tracks are difficult to make out due to the traffic of a city, and an odd scratch mark can be see that the mark seems to have been caused by a sharp metal object striking the ground.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Try as he might, there simply isn’t enough evidence to form a firm conclusion regarding the weapon or device that struck the ground. It was metal. It was sharp. That’s all Fingers can say with any certainty.

Lars scratches his chin. “Sad, sad business.”

Rhys doesn’t get very far with his offer of aid.

“Nope, can’t let you do that. Pain that it is.” He then lowers his voice and leans in slightly. ”This is ammunition. So it can’t fall into anyone else’s hands.” He then returns to his normal voice. ”Best be getting along there citizen. I’ve got stuff to do.”

Paige arrives late to the Black Cathedral, but is readily admitted to the mortuary. She exits rapidly, but not before imparting such knowledge as she has. Nellie watches her go before turning to the other two.

”Insides? Hmm, not got that far yet, but no, not that I can tell. See? The cuts, they’re largely superficial. Lots of blood. Lots of missing flesh. Took a lot of skin off her back and legs. As to that strangulation – I’d say that happened first: you don’t want your victim crying out in the street and believe me, if someone does that to you, you cry out. Loud. Course, like you said, not all the wounds are neat. Can’t explain that.” Nellie said in a practical, matter-of-fact way.

Strangling to keep them quiet, that's some nasty business. Do you think that they wanted the person to be quiet while they suffered, or that they continued to commit these horrific actions even after they passed out? And the multiple would types could mean there were multiple attackers.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Whilst scanning the area, both Burton and Kwarsk spot a small face peering out from an upper window opposite the ally. Realising that they’d been seen the observer quickly darts away and pulls the window’s shutter closed. That face was undeniably beastfolk in appearance. It was a mere glimpse for both and Burton was unsure – ratfolk or mousefolk – likely one of the two. Kwarsk had a slightly better angle and felt surer that it was a mousefolk.
Naithi’s careful scrutiny of the scene yields nothing further excepting only for a couple of dents or gouges on one wall. To her it seemed unlikely that they were the product of a sharp implement. However, they might be completely unrelated to the catfolk’s demise.
~~~

Rhys easily outpaces the labouring guard. He watches as the man diligently pushes the sack barrow up the low hill, eventually coming to what must be Duncan’s impressive-looking, walled manse. There are guards outside and others patrolling the perimeter. He sees the gate opened for the guardsman and within the courtyard stand two fine looking covered carriages. Of the horses, there is no sign. The journey has taken him some distance form the others – into an entirely different district in fact.

~~~
At the Dark Cathedral, Nellie nods and adjusts the sheet before carefully, yet skilfully rolling Menii’s corpse over. The back is missing great swathes of flesh. Some smaller patches are absent from her thighs.
”I’m not an expert. I just prepare the bodies as best I can.” She began. ”But if I were going to do something like this.” She paused as she indicated the condition of the body before her. ”I’d want my victim dead first. Why risk the noise? Course, that’s me applying logic. I’d have to say that it would need to be a raving lunatic to want to do something like this; so maybe I’m wrong. As to what did it...” She shakes her head. [b]”Can’t say for certain, but judging at the slight difference in height and positioning of the start of the cuts, near her shoulders, I’d say ….hmmm….some sort of flensing implement ...maybe six inch or so. Don’t quote me though; that’s just a best guess.
Paige returns and studies the neck markings/bruisings. She concludes that the strange markings are most definitely not the product of a bite mark, but could be from hands – misshapen or malformed hands. The bruisings just doesn’t match with where the fingers ought to end. She also notes that a small ‘bite’ of flesh was taken from the back of one thigh.
Zarsellet considers things. He is actually glad that his assumption was wrong. If someone or something were using the 'harvest' to change shape into one of the beastfolk it would be much harder to identify the killer. "So, the killer strangles the victim to keep them quiet. The killer's hands are misshapen or malformed, with the finger lengths.... wrong. Then the killer slices skin and flesh off of the back of the creature and from the legs. Why? And there is one spot where it appears that the killer, or something, took a bite from the victim."
"It still could be some sick mage wanting parts for spell components. But I'm thinking more likely either souvenirs or food. Look at that one bite though. What size would the attacker's mouth and teeth be for that?"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The Outcast Quarter is a maze of narrow twisting streets. Locating where anyone is therein is no easy matter. Rhys elected to go his own way prior to arriving at the scene of the murder, had only the vaguest of notions where to go in order to find his friends. Despite his friendly overtures, it is difficult for him to get the beastfolk to talk: he’s simply so large and intimidating.

Rhys will be able to meet up with the others, but it will take some time. The same also applies to Paige, Lothlo and Zarsellet.

~~~
Lars looked up at the indicated window. ”Well, of course, if you think it will help, I’ll ask, but….well, aren’t you the investigators? It’s just that I’m afraid that I simply won’t ask the right questions or forget something important.” He replied whilst looking somewhat pleadingly at Naithi, clearly hoping that she’s take that onerous burden fro him.
”I’ll come with you.” offered Emmut, but the dour faced badgerfolk likely wasn’t going to encourage anyone to be at their ease, particularly a timid mousefolk.
~~~

The bite mark proves difficult to assess. It wasn’t a big bite, but then, neither was it made by ‘small’ teeth. The dentition employed wasn’t ‘human’ per se, but might easily be deemed of human size. That it was an animal could not be ruled out.

Equally, the strangulation marks were odd. Careful comparison against their own hands showed that the digits were longer than might be expected – if that’s what they were. Whatever form they took, it seemed that they still retained sufficient manual dexterity to adroitly carve flesh from a person’s back.

Zarsellet, Paige & Lothlo – speculation: Reasoning Check: Int:12 Highlight to display spoiler: { Possibly that which did this can shape change. That would at least help to explain the dichotomy of strange injuries. There’s no proof of this. It’s merely another possible explanation.}

Burton: Explains to Lars what is required of him.
Fingers: ?
Lothlo: Thanks Nellie and ponders the possibility of shapeshifters in the city.
Kwarsk: Ponders the nature of the wounds.
Naithi: Elects to speak with the mousefolk alone.
Paige: Makes rapid progress towards the Outcast Quarter, setting a pace that is most demanding of Zarsellet’s little legs.
Rhys: Returns to the area where he’d left the others.
Zarsellet: Muses on the conundrum of the injuries and makes his way to the warren-like Outcast Quarter.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It was now early afternoon. The sun was making sporadic appearances between the many clouds that filled much of the sky. The wind was fitful, varying in strength dependent upon which street or corner you were stood. At the scene of the crime, sheltered as it was, there was very little. As Paige hurried towards the Outcast Quarter she continued to ponder what manner of creature had perpetrated such horrific injuries. She could only conclude that whatever it was, it was likely bipedal and nothing that she’d ever encountered before. She didn’t recall even reading of such things; so could only conclude that whatever did this must a strange and rare thing indeed. Similarly, Kwarsk’s musings yielded little definitive. He concluded that something could be fabricated to resemble a natural weapon and so could not be ruled out.
By the time that Rhys catches up with the others Naithi is gone.
Paige, Lithlo and especially Zarsellet are still a distance from the other group, but Paige quickly discovered that asking for Lars was the surest means of tracking her fiends as most of the beastfolk seemed to know him. His transit through the Outcast Quarter had not gone unnoticed. Zarsellet, still somewhat lost in his thoughts decides that they don’t yet have sufficient information to draw any firm conclusions and making assumptions could severely inhibit the investigation.
Naithi goes to speak with the mousefolk. The first door she comes to opens readily. It gives access to a communal lobby. Naithi disappears into the darkness within.
Naithi Highlight to display spoiler: { wends her way up a narrow flight of steps that would be uncomfortable at best for larger folk. She easily finds the door that corresponds to where the window she sought. A few gentle knocks results in the door creaking open. It reveals a young female mousefolk. The door is still latched with a stout chain.
After polite introductions and some explanation, Naithi is admitted to the small, but neat residence. Over an oatmeal biscuit and glass of cold water Naithi manages to encourage the young woman to recount all that she heard, for she saw naught. It transpires that Elmari heard the frightful clanking of chains and some disturbing hissing sounds in addition to the victim’s solitary scream. She confesses that she was too afraid to look, for fear of being seen. She bemoans her cowardice, feeling most upset over Menii’s death.
As Naithi listens to the young woman's story, she offers words of comfort and understanding. There's no shame in fear, especially when faced with such terrible circumstances, she assures her gently. You did the right thing by staying hidden - sometimes, survival is the bravest choice we can make. Any action on your part would likely have led to two deaths instead of one.
Taking another sip of water, Naithi pauses before asking, Do you recall anything else about those noises? Was there a pattern or rhythm to the hissing? And did the chains sound heavy or light?
Naithi tries to picture his the scene might have occurred to create those sounds and the mark in the stone. The best she can come up with is someone raising their pet bulette and taking it out to feed, but that image was likely only conjured because she has always wanted to catch one and see how they taste when cooked properly.
As Lothlo makes his way to the rest of the group with the others he ponders their possible shape shifter and his mind goes back to the talk of necromancers from earlier.
You know, with the almost surgical removal of pieces of the victims is just odd. Maybe my mind is running wild with the tales of the necromancers, but I wonder the attacks could be to harvest parts, and the reason the hands prints don't make sense is because they were built with parts from past victims. You know what... that creepy morgue is probably getting to me and has me inventing ghost stories. I'm going to stop thinking about this until my nerves are more settled.
Paige is anxious to rejoin the rest of the Patchers but she will not move so fast that she leaves anyone behind. If Zarsellet requires the trio move at a slower pace, so be it.
She will review what she knows with Lothlo:”nothing was ‘missing’ from the catfolk, except skin and flesh off her back, and off the back of her legs. There was an odd bite on one thigh, but I could not identify the dentition. Then there was the strange pattern of bruises about the neck. Not made by a rope, nor by ‘hands’ as we know them. It’s all beyond my ken.”
After a moment of silence, the cleric asks: ”so, Lothlo. I saw you getting the tour of the Patch. Are you and Naithi thinking of staying in Plateau City for a while? You want to throw in your lot with us, and stay at the Patch? Help us out with some of these mysteries we’re trying to solve?”
Zarsellet wants to rejoin the team as much as anyone, and will gladly jog along if he has to. Singing requires controlling breathing so as he jogs he clears his mind of the details of the killings and just focuses on his breathing. He arrives somewhat winded but quickly catches his breath.
He lets the others talk first while he catches his breath. "Don't know for sure why the skin and such was taken. The skill of the person, flensing the flesh from the body.... But it could have been a chirurgeon, or a taxidermist for all that we could determine. It's disturbing!"
Burton: Waits for all to assemble.
Fingers: Suggest repairing to a tavern to converse more discreetly.
Lothlo: Worries that his imagination is getting the better of him.
Kwarsk: Continues to ponder.
Naithi:. Asks more questions trying to build a mental picture.
Paige: Ruminates on the mysteries surrounding Menii’s death and asks Lothlo if he intends to stay at The Patch.
Rhys: Asks what has been learnt.
Zarsellet: Reports some findings to the others.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The sun strives repeatedly to break through the clouds and occasionally bathes the area in cleansing light, making even this rundown area seem attractive, fleeting as those moments are. The disparate groups all converge. The Patchers are reunited. In so doing they draw a lot of attention and forming such a formidable crowd all by themselves, most beastfolk elect to avoid them. To them, even the seated Fingers is truly formidable.

Naithi returns from her conversation with the mousefolk and reports her findings. Her additional questions revealed nothing further.

”You know, Lemmy’s is on the way back.” Offered Lars. He runs a Beer Cellar bar. Yes, yes, I know that it’s going to be too small for many of you.” He looks pointedly at Fingers. ”But there’s a small courtyard at the back, we could sit there. It’s rarely used; so we’d likely have the place to ourselves. Of course, I’d have to go down and get them to unlock the door to let us use that, but he’s not about to turn down this much trade.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The expanded group wends its way through the narrow streets of the Outcast Quarter until Lars comes to an abrupt halt.
”Here we are.” He tells everyone.
Looking around, it’s far from apparent what he’s talking about. On his left are two adjacent stores. The first ‘Myrtle’s Marvels’ is evidently a herbalist of some sort. The aroma of spices and herbs drifts enticingly from the open door. Next to that small shop is another of similar dimensions (Each shop seems to occupy a space no larger than 10’x10’.) The other shop is called “Pots, Plates & Pans”. “Best in the City!” is scrawled in bold letters across the thick and somewhat distorted glass of the window. Sandwiched between these two premises is a single, arched doorway. It’s barely 5’ in height. Written in faint letters upon that door is “Lemmy’s”. Lars opens the door to reveal a short corridor. There are two ways on, but only one is open; that being another archway on the left.
Lars enters, turns left and descends some narrow steps. As he does the others hear lively chatter coming from below. It is only a matter of moments before a gnome comes up the stairs, followed by Lars. He turns left to open the door at the end of the corridor and waves everyone through.
“Welcome, welcome, come sit yerselves down. I’ll have Rissa come take yer orders. Seats aren’t right big though as we don’t get many tall folk here. Still, this is where they tend to go when they do find us – so there’s a few larger seats and old barrels what ya can use.” The gnome then stepped through so that all could make their way along the corridor. That corridor was indeed narrow and Fingers found it to be a definite squeeze getting through. However, once through the corridor they found themselves in a delightful walled courtyard. Unsurprisingly, it wasn’t large, but there was room enough for two tables – tables that could be pushed together and various ‘seating that could be used or co-opted as such. It seemed that some of the Barrels were intended as tables, but for Fingers made a decent seat. Yet it was not the furniture that made the yard appealing, but the abundance of plants. Growing up and over the walls were a great many climbing plants: roses, honeysuckle, clematis and the bright red flowers of various beans were dotted throughout this mix. Some of the roses were in bloom and released a heady scent.
As the group arranged themselves as best they could a young Squirrelfolk emerged, all smiles. ”Oh my, there’s a LOT of you.” She laughed as she looked at Fingers. ”Anyway, welcome to Lemmy’s; we’ve a couple of excellent beers at the moment. I can recommend the light and clean tasting lager and the citrusy pale ale. We also have a stout. I warn you that is very strong, deceptively so. Now, if you’re hungry….well, we don’t really do much food, but...” She smiled again. ”Lemmy’s done a load of satay chicken skewers. I think that’s what he called them. He puts chilli in them too, so they are quite fiery, but very tasty. So, what’ll you have? Once the orders were taken, Rissa departed having written precisely nothing down. Yet about five minutes later she re-emerged with a laden tray. She repeated this several times until all were catered for. Once she’s gone Lars asked.
”So, what are thoughts?”
Burton’s ruminations yield nothing specific. He can only imagine that anyone seeking such material could only want it for a very dark purpose.
Once the others tell what they know of the dark events that led them to this place, Rhys reveals what he has learned. ”While everyone has been investigating the murders, I took the opportunity to follow a guard pushing a cart full of ammunition up to Duncan’s residence. It’s a big walled manse with lots of guards. They seem to be keeping any loiterers away. I don’t know what a ‘trade and diplomacy’ event needs with ammunition but I don’t like it. I can show you where it is I whenever you wish.”
As the squirrelfolk waitress rattles off the various drink options, Naithi finds herself slightly overwhelmed by the choices. Her eyes widen at the mention of satay chicken skewers, however, and she pipes up excitedly, Ooh, those sound delicious! I'd love to try an order.
After receiving their orders, Naithi thanks the waitress warmly and settles back in her seat, eagerly anticipating the arrival of food and drink. She decides on a pint of the citrusy pale ale, finding its crisp flavor to be a perfect complement to the spicy satay chicken.
As they wait for their orders, Naithi leans in close to the others and whispers, So, what's our plan once we've gathered more information? Do we think it's safe enough to set up the trap here in the city, or should we lure the culprit out into the woods?
She glances around at their surroundings, taking note of any potential areas that could serve as a good ambush spot.
When Burton mentions the possible uses for the removed skin Naithi chews her lip for a moment.
I find the timing of this very suspect. We discovered the remains of a dog named Vandy that was dug up. It had protected Grimgold Security from necromancers releasing all manners of undead. Now there are a string of unusual murders and there is an active necromantic group in the area?! I worry that there might be another attack in the works. Another possibility is that the curse that security company was said to have placed (or someone related to the company) is responsible and trying to bring down the necromancers.
Also, one of you mentioned that there is a gnome named Mavros who runs a necromancy school at a place called the Hollow Pit here in the Nightmare Quarter. He was trying to use it to reattach peoples legs and had other ideas on how to use it in medicine. Now someone is missing skin from their legs. What if someone is killing beastfolk for parts? Could a necromancer be using the victims skin to reattach limbs? Or perhaps the limbs are reattached, but the living body is rejecting necromantic magic, similar to how gangrene spreads and they are trying to replace dead tissue with fresh flesh? Or perhaps an experiment went wrong and something like a chimera is in the loose... But that wouldn't explain the sound of the chains that was heard or the fact that the victims were silenced.
Burton orders the chicken skewers and a Pale Ale. He will wait until everyone has ordered and it has been delivered. He waits for Rissa to leave before asking; "When Menii's body was examined did you happen to notice if the more precise cuts were under the more frenzied ones? If they were, then I believe the attacker strangled Menii to keep her still while he collected what he wanted. The frenzied ones were an attempt to cover the collection up. As to why I have no idea but the possible deformity of the hands or fingers might have something to do with it. I say he but I have no real idea of the murderers gender or the relevance of the hissing, chains or the bite. O sorry maybe I should have asked this after we had finished eating." Burton smiles and bites into his chicken.
OOC: Burton is off to microwave his dice after it rolled a 2 on his Knowledge Arcana.
Zarsellet was disappointed that Burton couldn't think of an arcane use for the skin. Maybe it was necromancers again and they were planning to animate a patchwork.... He decides to stop thinking on such a subject before he ruined his appetite!
"While the lager or stout would normally be my choice, I think I'd rather go with the pale ale to quench the fire from the skewers. I'll take a couple of them to enjoy while we discuss...."
"Hmm.... A trap would be the simpler and most likely successful idea. It would be rather hard to lure them out without knowing who or what they are. All that we really know is that the hands that strangled were, oddly shaped. But, can we guarantee that the target for the trap will be safe? If the attacker strikes with surprise and immediately begins with strangulation, the target becomes another victim unable to cry out for help!"
While he feels a little bit disturbed by his memories as Burton asks his questions, he doesn't feel nauseous.... OOC: Fort Save 22....
Ah, Zar, but don't forget...Fingers cleans off a skewer in a single bite.[b] Not only will you and I, at least, be lurking nearby in the shadows, but the "target" in this case has a mental link with a vicious giant rabbit. Camalayaas will doubtless hop to Naithi's rescue before we mere two-leggers are even aware of any trouble.
Say, Naithi, is "Camalayaas" some Druidic word meaning "size of a camel"? It's fitting.
As they walk down the corridor, Lothlo catches a whiff of something spicy and delicious that makes his north start to water. When orders are being taken he asks for a few of the skewers along with a pale ale.
I agree it's odd timing, but what are you thinking about the dog? That he burrowed out from his tomb to help protect the people? I suppose it makes about as much sense as the rest of this crazy case.
As for using Naithi as a trap, it's not a terrible idea... she may not look it but she's as dangerous as they come in a fight. And if you give me a clear line of sight I hit the attacker fast enough to stop any strangulation. It's those mystery weapons and nasty wounds I'm more worried about, can we keep her safe if they choose to skip strangling and attack first next time?
Camalayaas was named after the village where we first met. Roughly translated, I believe it means "serenity". Because we are bonded, her size will stay proportional to mine. If I was bigger she could have grown up to two sizes larger...but I'll likely shrink another six inches this year , so that's irrelevant.
As for setting up a trap, I suppose what type depends on you knowledge of the geography and what talents we each have to contribute.
I think we first need to determine where the previous murder occurred as well as any other possible locations. If the other murder scene has a scratch on the ground like this one did, then perhaps we can use them to make a map of like disappearance sites and use that to choose a likely location. We should also note any relevant landmarks. If they are near Lasher Castle, the necromantic doctor's, or Duncan's residence, it might give us some clues.
As for the other disappearances, I have to wonder how it is that nothing was seen. It is difficult to move bodies out live prisoners. Dragging them into a close residence or Lasher Castle might be a possibility. Other options would be too do it around the Endless Falls. It would be very convenient to throw someone over the falls and have them teleported a half mile outside the city where they have someone waiting to collect them...
Sorry, the sound of that chain is really bothering me. Is there anything by the scene that might have a relevant chain? A draw bridge? Castle door or a city wall gate? What about a sewer entrance?
Her powers manifest differently in everyone, but she's allowed me to become one of the fairykin (level 5 PRC optional ability). Seriously. I'm going to actually grow fairy wings and everything! But as delicate as those wings are, I'll probably lose six inches and 8 lbs (Naithi is only 36 lbs ) as my body becomes more fairy like and adapts for better flight capabilities. It'll be interesting to see how people treat me differently when I like more like a fairy and less like a child.
The food is very tatsy, but not filling, except possibly for Naithi and Zarsellet. Clearly, Lemmy’s is set up to cater for Beastfolk and other smaller individuals. That being said, there are no shortage of larger glasses and tankards. Whilst the food is beastfolk sized, the drink flows freely enough to accommodate the largest thirst. The courtyard, secluded as it is, protects the group from the wind. The sun breaks through the clouds and warms the area significantly. It’s easy then to understand why the plants here have thrived so well.
The conversation is far darker than the surroundings, delving as it does into matters of murder and intrigue.
”So, what’s to be done?” Asked Emmut after a gulp of stout. ”It doesn’t seem right to me that Miss Naithi puts herself in harm’s way like that. Reckon I should be the one to lure ‘em out.” He clearly didn’t relish the idea, yet evidently felt compelled to offer.
Lars grimaced. ”The trap idea is probably a better use of resources than aimlessly wandering the streets. That way you’d have to spread your resources far thinner. Still, I would imagine that were we to get the guardsmen to help, that’s all they’d do and deterrence is a good thing. It could spare someone’s life. Well, whatever you decide, know that you have our fullest support and gratitude. It really is good of you to help us. Had you not, I don’t know what we’d have done.”
”Yes, many thanks!” Emmut raised his glass. ”To The Patchers!” He toasted. Lars echoed his toast.
It was now mid afternoon. No incidents were expected until darkness fell. There was still time to plan and decide edthe best course of action.
Burton sits back and listens as the conversation goes on. He is intrigued by Naithi's explanation of her impending change into a fey.
As the others talk Burton is thinking about the noises heard by the mousefolk Burton wonders if it could be a golem doing the murders, but they are not known for the fine control for precise cutting and they would probable stand out even more than the Patchers. Can you have golems that are smaller possible with greater dexterity? And what would it want the skin for?
Finishing off her ale and still from the meal, Naithi stands up and stretches languidly, drawing glances from several patrons. Shall we get started then? I'm dying to solve this mystery.
Let's check out both crime scenes and see if we can find any similar scratch marks or evidence of what might have made that chain-like sound. It would also help if we can determine where some of the others disappeared from by giving us a more precise idea on where to set our ambush.
I'm also curious about the other crime scenes and whether there is anything linking the locations that might give us a clue to how the attacker is choosing his victims, or how he is sneaking up on them.
Zarsellet considers the trap idea. "A trap is the best option. Trying to patrol the streets would possibly scare the killers off, but only while we are there. Likewise increasing the guard presence on the streets would do the same. Maybe if we compare the two murder scenes we can figure out the best location for our trap, and with it the best hiding place for our people."
Burton: Continues to work through the conundrum of the killing.
Fingers: Suggests a modification to the plan and tries to mask his intimidating size.
Lothlo: Wishes to see what can be learnt from the other crime scene.
Kwarsk: Fully supports checking the second location.
Naithi:. Suggests a course of action.
Paige: Isn’t enthused about the ‘bait’ plan, yet follows along.
Rhys: Scours the vicinity for suitable vantage points and the like.
Zarsellet: Extols the merits of the trap plan.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The expanded group make their way to the second crime scene. It isn’t far from the first and like that one, it offered a small alleyway that connected two streets in which to complete the grisly task. This alleyway however, had more footfall than the other, so the marks from the savage attack were either faint, eroded or missing. Nothing further could be gleaned from them. What was clear was that frequenting such a place would significantly heighten the chances of encountering whatever was ‘harvesting’ the locals.

Burton reminded Fingers that no additional guards would be forthcoming as they were currently all deployed to ensure the success of the trade delegation.

By the time they’d completed their assessments the Patchers had used up most of the day. It was late afternoon and the sun, having given forth its best was resting, behind some brutish-looking clouds. Looking at the weather, it didn’t appear that it would rain. Dusk would arrive in a few hours and the night would be dark: no stars, no moon.

Burton falls into step with Paige in a quiet voice he checks that she is ok.

He also explains that 'bait' while technically correct didn't really apply to Naithi as not only was she highly capable but she had a link with her rabbit which made her very tough and the Patchers would not be far off. So they would be there very quickly.

He also suggest that, as the victims had been killed in alleyways it might be an idea to split into two groups so both ends of the alleyways can be covers to prevent any escape.

Fingers, and anyone else good at picking out hiding spots - make some selections for us, especially noisy folks like me, and we'll set up shop after twilight, and then Naithi can play her role.

Kwarsk waits for Fingers or someone knowledgeable about hiding to tell him and others where to position themselves at the appropriate (dark) time.

Lothlo (WillD) -- AC: 20/15/16, HP: 51/51, CMD: 21 ()
Tuesday February 27th, 2024 5:36:03 PM

Lothlo keeps an eye out for spots he can hide in with a clear line of sight to protect Naithi when they set the trap. He then glances at Naithi's small body and considers the risks she's taking.
Naithi, since we know the attacker likes to strangle people we should consider taking extra precautions. For extra protection do you think we could slip some steel reinforcements in your collar to give you a little extra protection? Or maybe hide some spikes on it so that they can't tighten their?

Naithi nods in agreement, acknowledging the importance of blending in as much as possible. She quickly changes out of her usual attire and puts on a simple dress that resembles what the other victims were wearing.

She makes sure to conceal her armor underneath the dress, but leaving her long blonde hair loose and unbound with her ears and elongated face visible - a clear indication of her slothfolk heritage. With a few final adjustments to her appearance, she takes a deep breath and prepares herself mentally for whatever may come next.

Alright, she says determinedly, let's do this.

Naithi senses Paige's discomfort and smiles reassuringly at her, appreciating her concern. Don't worry,she says softly, there's a big difference between being bait and going hunting. I have enough tricks to keep on the right side of that line until you can back me up. Just remember, if I'm in trouble healing Camalayaas can heal me as well.

Her words carry an air of confidence and experience that hopeful t put Paige somewhat at ease. With a final nod of encouragement, Naithi takes her place within the ambush formation, ready for whatever may come.

As they wait in silence, Naithi's senses remain sharp and alert, scanning the shadows for any sign of movement or threat. She knows that time is of the essence - every moment they spend waiting increases the risk of another innocent life being

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The preparations are made. It takes time, not least to select what is deemed the best spot. That spot is not so much a ‘spot’ per se, but a small area. With almost everything being small in this part of town, that location offered 2 alleyways, offset and a narrow section of street between the two. Vantage points there were, yet views were always restricted in some way. Spreading personnel ensured that wherever Naithi went, she would be observed, but not by all. It was a balancing act. However, that it was a small area meant that any reinforcements would be swift in arriving.
It was fast approaching dusk as Lars and Emmut spoke with many of the locals to obtain access to their homes. Fingers was shown a low shed-like attachment to one house that looked out onto one of the alleys. Keeping back would keep him hidden – until whatever was close, but severely limited his range of vision, he could hear perfectly well though and noises seemed to travel well along the confining streets.
Kwarsk considers his options as the group splits up. My Tower Shield would be hard to hide in any alley or street. I'm a skilled climber, but the Shield would only get in the way, yet I need it for battle. Hmmm... what about this garden area?
Realizing that no one gardens at night, and that the buildings surrounding the garden provide cover, he enters the garden, steps to one side, and with one hand on his Tower Shield he peers around the corner and down the alley to the intersection. Bait(DM Nick K)
Thursday February 29th, 2024 5:15:35 AM
Burton: Looks around for a suitable place. He seems spoilt for choice. It’s too dark to see the roof tops. He finally settles inside a door of a helpful raccoonfolk. He pushes the door not quite closed so that he can see and hear, yet give the appearance that it is, in fact, shut. (Feel free to adjust the position if desired)
Fingers: Settles in atop a shed and blends perfectly into his surroundings. Whilst his view isn’t the greatest, he can see clearly all the way to Lamb Street and hear what happens locally well enough. Furthermore he can swiftly move from that location to be where he is needed most, albeit the alley is decidedly small for his bulk.
Lothlo: After some negotiations, Lothlo gets permission to access the roofs through an elderly ratfolk’s attic. To his disappointment, his view is very much obscured by the overhanging roofs and eaves. He can see the allotment area well enough, albeit a stand of coppiced poplars do restrict much of the ground beyond. Pitons are NOT welcomed in anyone’s roof! Lothlo further notes that the roofs are quite steep and uneven. Traversing them swiftly would likely be courting disaster. (Please feel free to adjust Lothlo’s position)
Kwarsk: Selects a good spot in the allotment area. He sees how well tended it is before focusing upon his vigil. He has a good view of the alley.
Naithi:. Waits for others to decide their positions before deciding upon her route.
Paige: Selects a small courtyard, accessed though a narrow gate off Wqriggle Snape. There’s room enough for her and Camalayaas, but if they are to follow Naithi she knows that stealth will be required and likely lots of it.
Rhys: Secretes himself wonderfully opposite Loppy’s Ginnel.
Zarsellet: Clambers up a wall down Wriggle Snape and secretes himself atop it. It’s a little precarious, but he’s small, so it’s safer for him than someone larger. Certainly it’s unlikely that few, if any, would expect anyone there.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

It grew dark and the closed in, almost claustrophobic nature of the Outcast Quarter conspired to keep light to an absolute minimum. Matters were not aided by the heavy cloud cover above. The fearful beastfolk locked doors and barred windows. Very little light emanated from their dwellings.

Those without darkvision will be unable to see much of anything. Those with low light vision will struggle somewhat, but can still see.
NB: It’s NOT pitch black; so eyes will adjust.
Normal vision is effectively restricted to 15’
Low Light Vision permits twice that 30’
Darkvision – as normal.

The reduced limit of sight wasn’t such a big issue ultimately as the twisting, confining nature of the streets rendered further distances largely obsolete. The Patchers still had some time to finalise their arrangements and then Naithi could decide her route.

Reposition as desired. State any additional measure/precautions. Naithi to declare the start and end point of her route and whether she plans to double back at the end of it.

Kwarsk settles in for the watch, relying on being around a corner from any alley-prowling murderbeast for "stealth."

(OOC Kwarsk, with Tower Shield, is Stealth -5, not a typo. He's simply standing there and not moving much, his Tower Shield resting against the wall, his left hand on its strap and ready to don it. (This makes him Stealth +1 modifying Naithi's Stealth roll for him, plus wall bonus for avoiding being seen. If Naithi's roll doesn't count, Kwarsk's backup plan is Take 10 (sum of 11, plus wall))

Fingers' eyes become accustomed to the dark, yet he can see only about fifteen feet either way down Loppy's Ginnel. (That's what the old rabbitman called it; apparently a "ginnel" is a kind of alley.)

If necessary, he can light up a sunrod for better visibility. But that would take a second or two, and seconds could count...

He puts one unlit sunrod into an inner pocket, wrapped tightly. Then he lays the pocket on the surface below him and strikes it with his blackjack. That sets it alight; but as long as it is wrapped, little or no light will escape.

Rhys: Composes himself for a long wait.
Zarsellet: Does his best to get comfortable and focuses on listening.

With everyone in position Naithi commences her casual stroll through the alleyways and up and down the connecting Middings. When she moves along Loppy’s Ginnel Camalayaas frows concerned: that’s a big distance. Paige too senses this and not wanting to be that far from Naithi also shares Camalayaas’ anxiety.

For the most part it is extremely difficult to watch Naithi all the time. However, being as spread as they are, The Patchers are effectively able to monitor her passage along the street and alleys. Nerves are eased as nothing happens. Naithi trundles casually back and forth several times.

Determined to keep an eye on Naithi, or at last stay within supporting distance, Lothlo forsakes his hiding spot and stealthily follows – at a distance, so as not to betray his presence. (See map)

Zarsellet, like the others, hears the usual night sounds: distant echoes of revelry, the occasional barked shout (possibly a guard) – again nowhere near the vicinity, an owl and the scratching of rats – at least briefly, before they move on. A dog barks twice. A cat hisses.

For the fourth time Naithi makes her way back down the Middings towards Wriggle Snape. Camalayaas becomes less anxious knowing his friend/sister is approaching once more.

As Naithi patrols the darkened alleyways, her keen senses pick up on... something that tickles her senses (Perception 30 = success. Results next round). She stops in her tracks, every nerve ending taut with anticipation as she listens and watches intently for any further signs of movement.

Walking the alley gave her nothing but free time to think about her actions. Most situations will result in her turning to face the unknown stimuli.

If she needs to go to the aid of another it combat like eminent she is holding an action to, without hesitation, call out to Camalayas - her loyal mount and companion - who will come bounding towards her at breakneck speed.

As the young doe passes by her she will execute the Fast Mount maneuver (free action rude check = 29 success), leaping onto Camalayas' back as she races past her at full speed in the indicate direction (Camalayas movement speed is 40, 160ft when running.)

Her heart pounds in her chest, adrenaline coursing through her veins as she clings tightly to her trusty steed. She knows that this could be their only chance to catch the killer before another innocent life is lost.

If there is no threat, or the threat is not identifiable as being their target, or it is to early to tell, then Naithi will walk 30ft in that direction and try to signal out inform the group discreetly as she passes by. (It's it is something that I cannot easily predict my response to, hopefully the DM will let me take two actions next round).

Three men had come from Lamb Street. Fingers realised that dropping his spell in the way of their intended route would almost certainly halt any support that he might hope to receive. He dropped it on them (Feel free to adjust the map and put it back where you initially stated, but it will effectively separate Fingers from everyone else). The men, hard and bitter-looking had already brought their weapons to bear. The spell took effect.
4. Did not fall and shot at Fingers. The bolt struck true. (Hits AC:24) 4 damage
5. Fell in a heap and shot the bolt from his bow skyward. It bounced noisily off the wall and up over a roof!
6. Did not fall and shot at Fingers. The bolt missed.

Rhys hears an attenuated cry of pain and the clatter of a bolt echoing up Loppy’s Ginnel.

~~~
Kwarsk notices two rats arguing over a small bone down the alleyway.
Naithi stops as three men emerge from the gloom crossbows in hand.
”Now then, Miss, not right safe to be out on a night like this, now is it? See, all sorts of terrible things been ‘appenin’ so they has. Best you be runnin’ along now -AFTER you lets us lighten yer load. Don’t wants ya bein’ all laden down with excess coin and stuff, now do we? So, ‘and it over. Now!” The desperate-looking men raised their crossbows.
From his doorway position and now very much awake, Burton sees three men in leather armour. Each has a light crossbow and several daggers at the belts. Those crossbows are levelled at Naithi! Burton is yet to act
Linked empathically to Naithi, Camalayaas immediately bolts from cover with an impressive leap, leaving Paige momentarily stunned. Camalayaas races towards The Middings. (At the end of this end Camalayaas will be at Naithi’s side & likely her mounted – but not yet! I have though moved Camalayaas to show where she can get to/will be.)
Paige almost instantly recovers from her surprise and gives chase. She can get to The Middings at the end of the round with a double move action)
Lothlo hears the voices, whilst it’s hard, at that distance to make out the words, the tone is clear enough. Lothlo rushes to aid Naithi. (Lothlo can get there with one move action. He can therefore act/attack this round should he wish)
Zarsellet sees the rabbit’s impressive bound and then Lothlo and Paige haring off after him (pun intended). He follows as fast as his legs can take him. (Double move to point indicated on the map)
Without warning, she leaps onto Camalayaas' back urging her forward with a fierce cry. The massive rabbit charges toward the men, her powerful hind legs propelling them through the air like a living projectile.
As they close in on their targets, Naithi launches herself off Camalayas' back, performing a graceful somersault. Mid-air, Naithi reaches out and attempts to snatch the crossbow from one man's hands, using her momentum to swing around and land gracefully once again on Camalayaas back.
Meanwhile, Camalayas continues her lunge towards the second man, a swift kick aimed to his wrist hoping to send his weapon flying out of his grasp.
Naithi then yells to get the neighborhoods attention.You got to see this! Those thugs are being beaten up by a little girl! A little girl! A great deal happens at once.
Kwarsk, who’d been carefully monitoring his surroundings detects TWO worrisome events. The sound of shouts and – was that a bow string snapping? - echoes from over the houses to the West. South west of him, towards The Middings, there comes much shouting. Being currently unable to fly, Kwarsk knows that taking Wriggle Snape will at least take him to The Middings and what is transpiring there.
Highlight to display spoiler: { As Kwarsk rounds the corner (T junction) he glances the opposite way (towards Wicket Lane) and briefly spots a shadowy, hunched figure that slips back into the darkness.}
Burton yells that they want the men alive!
Naithi is a whirlwind of motion, adroitly mounting Camalayaas and leaping into the fray. She dives between the men – for men they were: hard, bitter and desperate-looking, they were armed with light crossbows and daggers aplenty. They wore leather armour. Those crossbows were already raised and pointed at her; so when she darted forward, the men fired!
AoO: Hit AC: 24 & 23. Damage: (Ride check?) 1 & 2
Naithi sustains 2 glancing blows. The attempts to disarm fail as the targeted thugs wheel aside enough to avoid that happening.
(Disarming without the Disarm feat provokes an AoO. However, the men have already had one such and lack the feat that permits more.)
Paige sees Naithi plough through the men and rushes up into a flanking position, brandishing her weapon, ready for action.
Zarsellet rounds the corner and sees that the would-be robbers are already outnumbered.
Lothlo fires. His arrow strikes true and Thug 3 can only stare, open-mouthed as his crossbow sails from his grasp.
Thug 1 makes a run for it. Paige Camalayaas and Naithi get an (AoO) Attack of Opportunity. The other two drop their crossbows and produce daggers: one in each hand.
”Oh, so it’s to be like that, is it?” Growled the middle one (2) who seemed to be the leader.
Elsewhere….
Fingers and Rhys BOTH strike true and the thug nearest to Rhys staggers, grievously wounded. He somehow manages to retain his feet in the slippery area. He looks down, stunned at the injuries inflicted upon him. The other two, eyes wide in alarm, shoot again. The one uninjured, (5) endeavoured to pick himself up of the floor (Full round action – no AoO). He stands. The hindmost (4) pointed at Fingers at the bolt struck unerringly. It did not, however, strike any vital part of his substantial form. Sometimes there were advantages to being large.
Fingers takes 1 point of damage as the bolt fails to significantly penetrate his thick hide.
Ride check to use the cover ability to instantly drop down and hang alongside your mount, using it as cover. You can’t attack or cast spells while using your mount as cover. Ride check = 30, success. No damage taken.
ooc: I'm adding some clarification for the DM/myself/and everyone else because the mounted combat feats can be confusing and I'm still new to them. I won't post this every time. I'm also making sure I understand the rules the same way the DM does now, while the stakes are low, as opposed to in a critical situation.
Getting into cover is an immediate action. In order to attack after dropping into cover Naithi needs to use a move action. Because Naithi only took a single attack action she still has a move action, so she can get up and attack.
This works because Camalayas was the one moving. Your mount acts on your initiative count as you direct it. You move at its speed, but the mount uses its action to move.
On a related note, in combat, if your mount moves more than 5 feet, you can only make a single melee attack. Essentially, you have to wait until the mount gets to your enemy before attacking, so you can't make a full attack.
For the mounted combat feat Camalayas needs to get hit in combat. Since Naithi took both attacks last round it couldn't be used for those attacks.
~~~

A lot happens.

Naithi and Camalayaas each manage to land a blow. Naithi’s drops a nimble thug, who wasn’t quite nimble enough. Camalayaas lands a glancing blow on another (3). Paige swings and misses, but her effort is enough to cause the two standing men to turn and flee. (AoO’s for Naithi, Camalayaas and Paige.)

Burton’s magic missiles flare and dive unerringly into the two men that are still standing (I altered Burton’s target given that man dropped)

Zarsellet’s song inspires his friend’s. Strangely, he notices the easily identifiable pounding of Kwarsk’s heavy boots – receding! It’s not like Kwarsk to run from a battle.

Lothlo maintains his careful aim as he sees the two standing men heed his warning. They turn and flee.
~~~
Kwarsk gives chase and emerges onto Wicket Lane. It is deserted. Opposite him there are two small alleyways. He sees nothing, but hears a gate slam shut on the northern most of the two alleys.
~~~

Up in Loppy’s Ginnel, there is but one thug standing. Those were patently not odds to his liking, so he turned and fled. Or tired to. His feet slid from under him and he executed a most ungraceful landing, flat on his back. His neighbour (5) having stood, also endeavours to escape. Unlike his comrade, he does not slip and successfully exits the area of the Grease Spell.

Rhys and Fingers are now left with two men on the ground. One likes decidedly the worse for his encounter with them.

In Loppy’s Ginnel an alarmed and now plainly frightened thug attempts to flee. This time he gets his feet under him – and they stay there. He does his best to dart past Fingers: no easy matter considering the bulk of the Taur. His twisting acrobatic manoeuvre lets him down and he collides with Finger’s chest.

Rhys is in the middle of a Grease spell and must make a Reflex:13 save to move. He notes that his words were heeded. The man had dropped his weapons.

~~~
Down in The Middings, the two men still standing flee, but in doing so drop their weapons, clearly hoping that by being unarmed they’ll no longer be seen as a threat and therefore get shot in the back.
Paige and Naithi determine that the injuries sustained by the remaining thug are serious; serious enough to render him insensible. The man is unresponsive.
~~~

Kwarsk quickly finds a door, but no sign of the mysterious stranger. Trying the handle he quickly ascertains that it is bolted on the inside. Given his capacity to see clearly in the dark, he can tell that this door gives access to a small courtyard at the rear of the house

Zarsellet’s little feet patter swiftly as he endeavours to catch up.

Burton: Decides to take the thug with them. He agrees with Lothlo – there’s no furthger point in patrolling now and that they should take the thug back to The Patch.
Fingers: Declares his intent to find the others and heads back to The Middings.
Lothlo: Advises that there’ll be no point in further patrolling now – they’ll have brought too much attention to the area. He wonders where they wish to interrogate their prisoner.
Kwarsk: Converses with the man over the fence.
Naithi:. Heals the fallen thug and wonders where the others are. She then stares menacingly at the man wondering which parts could be eaten to evoke the best co-operation.
Paige: Begins her ‘subtle’ interrogation.
Rhys: Wonders why they never surrender.
Zarsellet: Waits and listens as he catches up tto Kwarsk – who he sees standing atop his mighty shield and peering over a tall gate into someone’s back yard.

Fingers and Rhys arrive at the Lower Middings just as the thug was roused back into consciousness. He did not look well, but was at least awake. He was patently confused and it took him a few moments to get his bearings. Paige’s toe helped. He held up a hand to mask his eyes from Fingers’ sunrod before answering.

”Who does we work for? Ourselves. That’s the truth of it. Times is hard, what with that there killer runnin’ around and slicing folk up. How’s an honest thief ‘sposed to make a living?” He babbled ”Things got so bad we had to turn legit and hunt that fiend down, so we did. Reckoned when we saw you lot, you were in cahoots and that, coz no way is you lot from round here.”

~~~
Whilst over in the Northern Alley.
”that don’t look right safe, you being over my gate and all. Why don’t you climb down and I’ll open up and we can talk, proper like. Got nothing to hide, me. And truth be told, I’m mighty glad you’re not the killer. Uh...you’re not the killer are you?”
Although he couldn’t see, Zarsellet heard this well enough and identified the speaker as rather elderly. That didn’t fit his expectations of the who the killer might be.
~~~

The other thugs fled. One lays dead in an alley. It would seem that the questioning is to be done here and not back at the Patch.

The back gate is unlocked and unbolted. The door opens to reveal a tired-looking, elderly half-orc. He does not smell good. The odour reminds both Kwarsk and Zarsellet of a tannery.

”Can’t run like I used to, but ….well, I couldn’t sit by and let all this bad stuff happen. I’m bigger than the wee beastfolk, so I figured I might scare the blighter away. Some plan, huh? Soon as I heard something I panicked and fled. Not much help.” He hung his head in shame, revealing a substantial bald patch.

Hoisted to his feet the thug offers no resistance.

”No problem, Squire. I’m right happy to co-operate. After all, we’re on the same side really. I man, no one wants to see this here killer running around and taking the lives of all them poor innocents. That just ain’t right.”

“Now, as to how long this has been going on – that’s not right easily answered. I guess, what, maybe a couple of weeks. Yep, no accounting for how many poor souls have been needlessly taken. A crying shame, it is.”

”Angbert, Angbert Skullen.”
The old half-orc introduced himself. He held out a smelly, calloused hand. ”Oh, I had a weapon.” He tells Zarsellet and points to an old club propped up against the wall behind him. ”Not a right lot of use, I guess, against them weapons what you mentioned. Course, I didn’t know that. I just wanted to help. Maybe…..maybe it would be better if that killer took me instead of some poor youngster. Terrible it is. As if life weren’t hard enough.

It was clear to both Kwarsk and Zarsellet that Angbert knew less than they and what he likely knew was wrong.

“Last I saw ‘em, them two were spotted in Trade Quarter, Rogue Quarter and Guild Quarter, you know, near places that ‘used’ to have a decent amount of people at night going to taverns, eateries and the like. That don’t happen so much now. Terrible it is.”

There wasn’t any more that the man could offer and he was perfectly – almost worryingly – happy to be carted off to the authorities.

In short order the Patchers are once again fully gathered. Zarsellet and Kwarsk are updated on what the ‘helpful’ thug has reported. They in turn report what they learnt from Angbert, which is to say, not a great deal. The group heads back to The Patch – by way of a guard post with a very chatty and ‘helpful’ thug in tow. He uses the additional questions and possibly the offer of ‘fair treatment’ to wax lyrical about what he’s seen and where. However, it quickly becomes apparent that he’s telling them what they want to hear. The more detail that is sought, the more he supplies. There seems no limit to the man’s inventiveness when it comes to spinning a tale. Soon enough he would have them searching for a one-eyed bald man in striped, ragged trousers and a wicked sickle for a left hand who has a bad limp and smokes Ferrantweed (whatever that’s meant to be!). His associate is actually a midget; a hairy one, but as wide as he is tall – which is why they like hunting in the narrow streets of the Outcast quarter! The only additional information of any worth is that whilst the killers DID frequent other areas, latterly they seemed to have operated in the Outcast Quarter where there are typically far less guards and the like.

The thug is deposited with the guards, who recognise him immediately. Equally, the man knows them just as well. The Patchers are thanked for bringing him in – again.

Everyone becomes somewhat lost in their thoughts as they head back to The Patch. Things had gone far differently than expected. What to do next? There were a great many unanswered questions. A few drinks helped Kwarsk get a good night’s rest – what was left of it. Ruminations meant others slept less well, but a hearty breakfast soon resulted in everyone feeling so much better.

Mid morning came and with it the sun. It wasn’t hot this time of year and whilst the sky was clear – not a cloud to be seen, the temperature stayed ‘fresh’. Lars arrived bundled up as if for winter, clad in gloves, scarf and hat. He quickly divested himself of these once he entered the building.

”Morning, morning all. My thanks and thanks from all in the Quarter. That was not only brave, but clever and most impressive. Now, I know that the killer was not caught, but if he has half a brain, he’ll surely think twice before venturing out into our domain again.” He concluded with a sorrowful look. ”I guess that doesn’t help folks elsewhere though, does it?”

Emmut appeared a moment later. Unlike Lars, the hardly badgerfolk wore only light clothing. “Aye, good work for sure. Still, I was thinking; is there anything we could do – like, maybe organise folk to keep watch and call an alert or something? Not sure it’ll work – especially with so many blind spots in those narrow alleys and streets, but it was an idea.”

Naithi is still stuck on the image of a shambling enemy that was able to install fear into the thugs with only it's presence. Visions of necromancy and the undead full her mind, probably because her last Druid Grove was overrun by undead. It is for this reason Naithi is fixated in Lars clothing. Vampires don't like the sun. Then again, someone is harvesting body parts, perhaps covering your skin will deter the enemy, it perhaps the clothing help regulate a corpse's temperature. Silently she ponder's Lars outfit. Was the clothing covering skin or fur (a rabbit beastfolk could look more human or more rabbit)? Sure he look any different than last time they met? Has she seen him in the sun before? The alley blocked the sun and it has been raining recently. They also talked about shape shifters, changing forms around others would be much easier if you body was covered. She signals Naithi to get his scent incase there is something off about it or they need to track lars down later.

Lothlo comes out of the kichen with a hot cup of coffee in his hand and greets their guests.
Ahh, good morning Lars. Yes, it is a shame that we weren't able to catch them last night, but hopefully the area is a little safer now. And if the killer has to find a new area to target hopefully the unexpected change will force him to be sloppier and easier to catch.
He then turns to Emmut.
Yes, an organized watch is a good idea. Even if there are lots of blind spots, if you know that any window could have a citizen helping to protect the area and are keeping an eye out for strangers to the area slipping into the blind spots it will make it hard for them to act. A few lamps along the street wouldn't hurt either, if that can be arranged.

"We can't expect the killer to move on just because he wasn't able to kill last night in the Quarter, and we don't want the people living there to let down their guard. If anything they need to be more careful tonight. Nobody should be alone, and nobody should be out on the streets at night."

"Anybody that happens to see a stranger from a safe window needs to take a good look. And report it the next day when it's safe to do so. Any information might be helpful to find and stop the killer."

These safe houses could place a sign in their window or have a mark on their door. Naithi quietly checks Lars clothing and scent. The outfit is odd, but no scent of anything undead or unusual can be found about the beastfolk.

Burton gets Lars to point out some locations on a map. (A copy of the City map can be obtained from various guilds and organizations in the City. You all have access to the information about the City on the Woldipedia, linked below). Lars shows you where many of the beastfolk live. We're not completely bunched up, but many of us have settled around here, he says while pointing at the map. He nods in agreement with the reward. Not sure where it will lead, but I guess it couldn't hurt. I'll see what I can get everyone to donate.

Lothlo likes the local watch idea. It is worth noting that many streets in the City are at least partly lit.

Zarsellet counsels caution, and hopes watchful citizens can help.

Fingers suggests noisemakers could prove useful, and that patrolling should continue

Kwarsk begins putting all of the ideas into an organized fashion

Rhys keeps quiet for now, and waits for the conversation to flow

Paige asks Lars to organize this neighborhood watch, and he agrees. This is a good idea, we'll get to work on it today. Please stop by and let us know if we can offer anything else.

The beastfolk depart, they seem hopeful, allowing themselves to believe that you will be able to help them.

Paige suggests it's time to bury Vandy. but where's the best spot?

I'm saying we should sell the potions and such buried with Vandy and donate the proceeds to help feed and clothe the children, and then in turn the children each give a small knickknack, favorite stone or something, to be re-buried with Vandy. The team has some things to discuss.

Burton makes note of the number of taverns around the City, and one in particular he would like to try.

Paige shows the newer members of the team where the maps are kept. She also suggests a burial place for Vandy.

Zarsellet ponders the current mystery and wonders what other clues may be available. The Guard should have such information, or perhaps the Black Cathedral.

Lothlo also likes the idea of involving the orphanage in honoring Vandy.

Fingers suggests a small shrine or other homage to Vandy can be done tastefully.

Kwarsk suggests selling the useful items to provide funds for the orphanage.

Rhys agrees, and then provides his report. It sounds a bit concerning.

Due to the night patrol, the team has a late breakfast after getting some much needed rest. After breakfast, a delivery arrives at the Patch. The courier brings a few packages, each named for members of the team. With the delivery complete, he heads out to his next stop with the remaining packages. (This is 'official' drop off of any outstanding Catacombs purchases that were made recently. Please update sheets if needed You are welcome to show off your prizes to the group).

It seems there is agreement to inter Vandy at the orphanage(any objections need to speak up). Someone can volunteer to sell the items at the Catacombs to get the funds for the orphanage and then it will be time to take care of Vandy.

Are there any other preparations to complete for the funeral? Other tasks anyone would like to focus on?

The heroes can decide....

OOC- reminder, the coffee shop was abandoned by the original owners when the Scar appeared and got too close. Patrons stopped shopping at the stores nearest the Scar. Walid's group moved in and set up the orphanage which has grown and thrived under their care. The building could still be remade into a coffee shop with some effort. The orphanage also occupies some of the other nearby buildings which were abandoned, and they long ago boarded up the other entrances.

Though Paige has given voice to her opinion regarding the disposal of Vandy’s remains, she wasn’t involved with what went on when the chest was opened nor how the orphans were implicated. The half-elf hopes the situation with the dog can be resolved quickly so the party can move on to more important things.

Otherwise the cleric will hang out the shingle that indicates the infirmary if open to the public and treat anyone who seeks care. After learning what ails any of her patients, she’ll distract them from any procedures by inviting them to share gossip and scuttlebut - hoping to pick up any bits of random information associated with: (1) Duncan (2) Pyramid Group (3) grisly murders taking place in nearby quarters or (4) goings on in and around The Scar.

I think the orphanage itself is the best place, as it is the most likely to remain in the possession of the Patchers or the Orphanage. Some agreement is reached, and it is time to bury Vandy. The coffin is rebuilt, and a lock made by Fingers secures the whole thing. The kids are somber, yet pleased that Vandy will be remaining at the orphanage. A few of them offer small toys to be buried with Vandy, stuff a dog might like. Desi reluctantly parts with the goblin doll, which she seemed very attached to.

Sister Bonny shows up, says she just had a feeling that today was the day with a wink and nod at Isabella. A nice spot is chosen near a small garden outside the back of the shop, and Sister Bonny takes care of the official part of the ceremony. You get a sense that she would have taken a person's passing just as seriously. After the ceremony, she departs, and the kids thank you for everything you've done and many hugs go around.

Walid and his partners offer a few snacks, informing you that they have been teaching the kids how to bake recently. The items offered are tasty, if a little bit burnt.

The following items are given to the team. If you wish to donate any of them to the orphanage, they are gladly accepted. (these items were placed by Vandy's owner, they are yours to keep or donate as you wish)
2 potions of Holy Water
2 potions of Cure light wounds(cl 5)
1 Scroll: Cure Serious Wounds(cl 10)

Back at the Patch, Paige offers assistance to the neighbors as usual. There is the usual amount of gossip, and the most relevant seems to be a sense of growing anxiety and concern about the murders. There are several comments about how it isn't safe to go out at night, and people are wondering when it will end.

Zarsellet checks in with the guards. There have actually been less dead than usual in the City lately, they feel its' due to less people being out at night. One victim does fit the description of the previous murders, a male half-elf who was known to be rather poor and frequently found begging outside taverns in the Outcast Quarter.

An involuntary wince crosses Lothlo's face as the sheet is lifted. He's seen people that lost their lives in battle before, but the needles barbarity of this killer is not the same, and no easier than the last time to have to lay his eyes upon.

Thank you for allowing us to continue our investigation, I pray this will be the last time though I fear you are right that this will only stop once the killer is caught.

First, he examines the bruising on the neck to see if the marks match what they saw before, and if they are any clearer and might provide a new clue as to what caused them. He also assumes this would be near impossible for a copycat to replicate. And a similar mark with a slight variation in size could give weight to the theory of a shapeshifter... or a tail. In hind sight that might be more likely in an area with a large population of beastfolk. Lothlo almost kicks himself for not thinking of that sooner, though perhaps it was obvious that the strange strangulation marks were some sort of finger. He'll take a closer look this time to confirm it looks like a misshapen hand and not something like a tail or a snake, or perhaps simply the handprint of a beastfolk he didn't recognize the first time since examining strangulation marks is not a normal activity for the sharpshooter.

Next he examines to see if the see the same variety of wounds, caused by the same tools, and whether these appear to have again occurred after the initial strangling.

As grim as the though is, he tries to judge whether the wounds indicate that the attacker is becoming more sure of their actions, more aggressive, or anything else the new wounds might indicate.

The last thing he keeps an eye out for is any kind of debris on the body that might have been inconsequential on the first victim, but could indicate a pattern when found on another body in a completely different area of the city.

Interlude - DM BrianZ
Friday March 22nd, 2024 8:40:55 AM

Naithi examines the scene of the new crime. There's nothing in the area that would seem to be the source of chains. The sewer grates are maintained and show no sign of damage or use. Camalayas does pick up an odd scent in the area. (He?) isn't sure what it is but is convinced he will know it if the group comes across the scent again.

Rhys looks for possible escape routes. The small trail of blood leading up the street away from the crime scene indicates the killer was not concerned about being seen nor in a big hurry to flee.

Ah sorry, it's Ellis. Yes I can show you, it's right over here. Ellis shows you the spot, but it's pretty obvious due to the blood. He also points out the blood trail going up the street. The body was dragged a bit before the killer stopped and...well I don't want to think about it too much. A crew should be here pretty soon to get this cleaned up. Let me know if you need anything else. The tired guard resumes shushing worried residents out of the area.

Fingers also inspects the area thoroughly but finds nothing else of note. The residents who remain, or live too close to be sent on their business by the guard, did not see anything but did hear some brief screams. The screams may have been brief, but they indicated the victim was in a great deal of pain before being cutoff. The attack was loud and clanking chains were heard.

At the Black Cathedral, Paige, Burton, Lothlo and Zarsellet examine the body.

There is significant bruising again around the neck. It is difficult to tell much, except that it was either very large hands, or something larger than a man's hands. There is once again, a lot of damage. The skin is...ripped open may be the best way to describe it. And the areas which were not ripped once again had finely cut sections removed.

Zarsellet hums a calming tune during the examination, both to settle stomachs and to provide a boost to those examining.

Burton tries to think of a magical use for skin. There could be many, but only for those with a decidedly evil nature to use the skin of sentient beings.

Nellie gently covers the body again once the team is finished. She reminds Burton that the Black Cathedral is the location all legal interaction with corpses is conducted. No other group has permission to do so, and few would risk Gargul's wrath for meddling in such activity.

She thanks Lothlo for being respectful. Your group is investigating this, yes? I hope you stop him soon, it is unnatural to meet Gargul before one's time

It is getting late in the day, and it is time to plan the next step in the investigation.

Burton asks Nellie if she has a ruler and if he can borrow it.

Option #1:
If one is supplied Burton will carefully measure the dimensions of the finely cut sections. He will make careful notes and draw the shapes in his notebook.

Option#2:
If Nellie can't lend him a ruler Burton will carry out the above but will estimate the size as carefully as he can.

When he has finished Burton will ask Nellie if the other murder victims bodies are still available and if they are if he could record the areas of skin removed. Burton will confirm with Nellie that so far only three bodies have arrived like the three they know about (i.e. strangled, skin removed and stashed up).

When the group leaves the Black Cathedral Burton will head back to the Patch via a store where he can get sheets of paper. When at the Patch Burton will cut out the paper in the shapes of the missing skin. From these Button will try and identify if the killer is trying to make something such as a cloak or coat.

A slight frown appears on Lothlo's face as their investigation turns up nothing new.
Last time it appeared that the victim had been strangled before the other wounds had occurred, can you tell if that is the same situation for this body?

”We can put these serial murders on the back burner, or we can cast a wider net - ask some of our contacts around town - like Zolbar at the Crypt, or Mavros at the Hollow Pit. Or even Clarisse?” The cleric arches one eyebrow, ”Clarisse used some pretty strong words when she described Duncan’s viscousness - like ‘animal’ and ‘hunter’ and Zolbar thought he was pretty scary too. Said he ‘was the scariest dwarf he’d ever seen.’ I wonder if there is any connection?”.

Interlude - DM BrianZ

Burton takes some detailed notes. When 'mapped' out, there doesn't seem to be a particular pattern except for large sections being taken(that are also not in the areas that have 'ripped' wounds).

The trail of blood leads to a spot about 50 feet away from the original attack site. The spot may be less well lit at night based on the pattern of the street lanterns. The blood here is pooled in one spot which is also where the body was located. The initial attack location has more of a splatter pattern.

Nellie responds to Zarsellet' queries. Not yet, but the information will likely find its' way through our system within a few days. Occasionally there is no information, but that seems to be rare.

Nellie isn't sure of which order the wounds occurred. Do you think that's important?

Paige considers some options for moving the investigation forward. What does the team think?

Burton confirms with the authorities that the sections of skin that had been removed where not found at the scene of the crimes. If that is the case then the killer is taking them with them which makes them either; as trophies or possible the reason for the attack. Are the pieces the right shape and size to be used for scrolls or are they much smaller?

Zarsellet thanks Nellie and decides to go. The murders disturbed him almost certainly because he can't imagine someone randomly killing and dissecting individuals like this. "I think we could set up a trap again. Stopping a petty criminal doesn't solve this, but it does stop a crime from being committed. And eventually it might lead us to the killer."

Lothlo (WillD) -- AC: 20/15/16, HP: 51/51, CMD: 21 ()
Monday March 25th, 2024 6:04:57 PM

Lothlo considers Nellie's question about whether it's important.
It's hard to say at this point. If they are being forced to change their hunting grounds then knowing if and how their MO is evolving could help us better predict their actions and bring this to a close sooner. If they are becoming more calculating and more precise they may be easier to predict. If they are becoming more risky and sloppy it may lead to more avenues we can investigate for clues.

At the moment the choking would indicate if they are still being careful, and the unusual bruising make it a more likely spot to reveal a clue about what are attacker looks like... at least their hands. Other than that, if things looks the same there isn't much else I can draw from what I'm looking at.

Fingers stares at the blood stains, then looks around. Better lighting would have helped, I think. But that's the city's problem to solve, long term.

Naithi, I think you have to get the word out: No one goes out alone after dark. Pairs at least. And tell them to be armed, even if its just their eating dagger.

He sighs. This is all prevention; if it works, that means it will be harder to catch these monsters. I guess I can live with that.

Fingers starts thinking about craftsmen who could start making noisemakers. (Knowledge (Local): 16)

Tuesday March 26th, 2024 7:02:55 AM

Burton ponders what the skin sections being taken are used for. Investigation in this area may lead to a clue.

Rhys is concerned about the lack of progress.

Zarsellet muses about setting a trap. What kind of trap? Details may need to be worked out.

Lothlo ponders the specifics of the crimes and if it could lead to the killer. So far the primary fact is the area in which they are occurring.

Fingers is concerned with prevention. He recals that there are many varied vendors in the Skull Market, and possibly someone there would be able to make some noisemakers or have some for sale.

Paige returns to the Patch and waits on the report from the rest of the team.

Naithi spreads the word as the team travels, encouraging people not to go out at night and to contact the Patchers with any unusual sightings.

As you travel back to the Patch, it is clear that the streets are emptier than usual even for early evening. As you arrive, everyone is able to share what they have learned from the day's investigation. A quick meal is shared, and the late afternoon sun starts to give way to the encroaching darkness.

What would you like to do?

Lothlo discusses what to do next with the others.
Unfortunately, I'm at a loss for anything productive we can do. We could try patrolling the same area the last body was found in and hope that he's settling into a new pattern, but the killer could just as easily be randomly choosing locations if he feels people are now trying to find him.

A plan is hatched. Set someone out as bait, and be ready for action. It was tried before, but maybe there will be better luck this time? Now, what remains are the details.

Who will be the lure
How close does everyone want to be
Setting watches or is everyone awake for the whole event?
What precautions are taken
Where will you set up the trap
How long will you stay in the same area

OOC- expect a map tomorrow, of the street where you setup your trap. Be as detailed as you like with the plans.

Naithi shakes her head at Rhys, who has already forgotten that she dislikes being called bait. I have no problem being the lure as long as you remember I'm a hunter and not helpless. However, if you want me to stay in one spot, we really need to think of a reason to justify it. Seeing a girl standing still for a couple hours in the dead is night is a bit suspicious.

Do you know anyone living in the quarter that would allow you access to their home? You could stroll out to a street corner close to there, and proposition the rare passerby. Negotiate the transaction and take them back to the house for a short interval? And then return to 'your corner', until the next 'customer came by?"

Lothlo scratches his head, unsure of the best course of action.

Word of our actions may be spreading, and anyone planning these attacks would have been paying attentions to such news. I'm not sure the same trap is going to work again if they know someone matching Naithi's description was among those that took out the muggers. We may be better off just patrolling and keeping an ear out for the attacker.

Lothlo thinks again of the strange wounds left on the bodies.

By the way, do you know if this town has any sort of leather workers guild? Perhaps they could provide some info on what kind of tools are making these wounds and what kind of uses the removed pieces might have.

Honestly, I think my "plan" would cover these issues. Naithi just walks in a wide loop around the neighborhood, maybe carrying groceries or something. Only someone who follows her for a long time will notice that she has no particular destination.

Meanwhile, the rest of us hide in various locations, so that at least one of us can see her at all times.

If nothing happens tonight, it's probably a good idea to come up with a new plan for tomorrow.

”Remember, the beastfolk have set up a sort of neighbourhood watch of their own. If you-all plan to skulk around after dark - better give them some advance warning.” Attaching her long hooded cape about her neck with her WLA pin badge, she lets the Patchers know she’s off to the Crypt in order to take Zolbar, the proprietor, up on his offer of hospitality. ”I’ll meet up with you in the Outcast Quarter later. Look for me sometime after midnight.”

At the Crypt…

Paige will play some vingt et un, and have a little food and (non alcoholic) drink from the buffet. She’ll check with the bouncers at the gambling establishment to find out what entertainments are set up for the arena in the basement of the joint. Later she’ll try to get a meeting with Zolbar and after some inconsequential chit-chat, ask him if he knows anything about the gruesome murders that have been occurring in and around the Outcast Quarter. (Diplomacy=17+6=23)

Later…

Before midnight, the cleric will make her way to the Outcast Quarter to rendezvous with her companions. She looks around from time to time to get her bearings, but isn’t particularly attentive. (Perception=4+6=10) Under her long cloak she grips her Morningstar tightly.
