We’re off to see the wizard!

DM Bob and Carla - ”We’re off to see the wizard!!”  d3=3 (this does not mean anything…)
Friday March 8th, 2024 12:46:04 AM

A convivial evening is spent at the Blue Cat. Jasper is chuffed after some excellent retail therapy at the Catacombs. The normally introverted half elf excitedly shares details of her escapade with her good friends, but grows suddenly shy when she spots Makis at the table.

Sheriff Eugene drops by for a pint, and chats with Isaac. ‘Yes’ he got the note. ‘No’ he doesn’t have any contacts in Plateau City. ‘Sure’ he’ll keep an eye open for any ghosts roaming about. There’s been some sightings of Waldo just outside the eastern gate. Nothing serious, but maybe the paladin can look into it when he comes back?

Without aggression or hostility, but with conviction, the Bloodwitch turns aside Snark’s accusations, expressing pride in his beliefs in magic and the supernatural. Makis later opens up to his brother, after Benni spends time with him sharing information about the town of Heranmar and environs, the people and their beliefs, and a little about each of the adventurer’s with whom he’s thrown in his lot. The cleric is open about his mission to spread Flower’s message of love (in all its forms).

After a good night’s rest, and a large breakfast cooked up by the housekeeper, folks spend their last day settling their affairs in town, or resting. When Benni and anyone else who cares to pay a last visit to the WLA representative meet up with Miles, he entrusts a leather folio containing his dispatches for WLA headquarters to their safe keeping. Urist and Jasper disappear for a good part of the day. The dwarf tags a few places with invisible graffiti, while the druid makes one last reconnaissance of the wild spaces she has come to love.
*****

Snark and Beatrix, anxious and ready to go, are the first to wake. It’s still dark out when the Luck Makers and the newcomer grab a quick bite to eat from the cold breakfast set out the night before by their housekeeper, and let themselves out the front door, locking up as they go.

The town is dark as the group make their way down the street and through the west gate. The gate is open per usual, with one visible guard in attendance. After an hour along the West Road with the dark sky just starting to lighten at the edges, a circle of standing stones - each stone taller than a man - can be seen to the party’s left. Tramping across the field the party spots several figures moving about within the confines of the circle. Honora and two sister crones are sprinkling a sparkling golden dust evenly over bare ground in a circle 10 ft in diameter, while Olostim inscribes a complex pattern of pictorial signatures in the dust.

Sensing the party’s presence, he explains: ”Honora and her sisters have provided the great deal of Amber required, and this site will amplify and strengthen the magic. Are you ready?” Never once did the wizard look up, however after a minute or two he completes the work and steps back. He studies his work for a moment. And then pats at his robes, eventually finding what he wanted. ”Here’s the letter for the Archmage.” he says as he thrusts it out for someone to take.

The Daughters of the Crones fan out around the perimeter of the circle watching as Olostim begins to recite the ritual magic. The sigils start to glow, and then swirl, and just as the sun peeps over the horizon a thrush trills and the circle transforms into a shimmering portal. ”Now! Step into the circle NOW!”

One moment you are standing inside a circle of standing stones in the middle of a field, the sun rising and birds beginning to sing…and the next you in a large open hall, glowing sigils at your feet. A few robed figures along the periphery of the space ignore the party, however one individual seems to be moving towards the new arrivals…

Snark checks over his gear one last time. He enjoys the cold breakfast, and grabs a few things to munch on the way.

As he steps outside in the still, dark morning he pulls out a ring with continual flame cast on it that hangs from a cord around his neck. Once everyone is there, he sets out with the others. As he walks, his little legs struggling to keep up with his friends, he pulls out another ring with Continual Flame cast on it and hands it to Makis. "Hey Mak, consider this a peace offering. Sorry I was a little rough on you yesterday. Besides, even a Bloodwitch might need a light in the darkness."

He's comforted to see his friend Olostim at the standing stones, and as the tall wizard holds out the letter for the Archmage, the little gnome will reach up and take it. "I'm gonna miss you Olostim. You sure this thing's safe? Any idea how we're gonna get back, I mean, will this thing work both ways? Oh, and what's the Archmage's name?"

Snark will step into the circle with the others.

“Benni” AC 23/11/22 CMD 19. HP 55/ 55 Onesimos (SteveK)

Onesimos listens intently to Makis, trying to understand and not trying to reply. It may take some time to unpack all that happened and how both of them have changed, but Benni is ever more certain that the brothers have more in common than differences. "The familial love of parents is necessary when a child is growing, but it must change or it stagnates into control, and can lead to Ga'al. Maybe another time is for another story. My experience was different but similar, for I also saw my god (everyone in Plateau City that day saw many of them!), but she was not the community our parents wanted me to go.'

Refreshed by sleep, a quick meal, and and the feeling of a beginning of reconciliation with Pharmakis, Benni is content to follow and let others interact with Olostim and the coven. He steps in at the appointed time, and ...

Assuming wherever they are is a place in the Star Mages Tower of Plateau City, the cleric looks about, then walks towards the approaching figure. "Flower's blessing upon you. We are the Luck Makers from Heranmar. I believe we are expected?"

Makis the Lucky (AC 13/13/10, CMD 16. HP 72/72) (Harry)

Responding to Isaac over dinner Makis's eyes go distant as he tries to explain. The lady of Mercy? She was maimed, but it was more to show that even disabled she was capable. There was a presence to her like nothing I have ever experienced. And even though she did not speak I felt valued and accepted by her for who I was, maybe for the first time. And I knew I could choose to serve her, but serve is the wrong word. More like join her team to help protect the people of the South. It was a compliment and commitment all wrapped up in a warm package. Does that make any sense to you?

The next morning Makis walks out with the others. He gives a shrill whistle once outside and after a moment's wait a small sleek creature wings from out of a nearby grove to alight on his shoulder. To those around he introduces Everyone, this is my friend EllaShee. Ellashee, say hello. The tiny brightly colored dragon regards each person there and then "speaks" directly into your minds : It is a pleasure to meet new friends of my companion Makis. I too shall travel with you this day. Please know that in times of battle if I fly to you and land on your shoulder I will be bringing you Makis' boon of luck or perhaps even healing, so please do not resist or try to avoid me, .

I will carry this as a token of friendship to be Mr. Riverstone. And I shall carry it concealed like you do. But know that as long as I have my magic I can have the light I need. With a quick flourish 4 small lights appear and begin to dance about. Isaac Harker (Justin M) HP 87/87 AC22/ T12 / FF20
Sunday March 10th, 2024 9:14:36 PM

Isaac feels a little sick after the the teleportation and bends overfeeling like he just went through a freefall off a cliff. "Hold on I think I left my breakfast back at town." He groans but is able to keep it down.
The dragons speech surprises him "So your friend can speak directly into our heads? Can they relay messages while we're in battle?"

DM Bob and Carla - ”Star Tower”
Sunday March 10th, 2024 10:57:48 PM

The teleportation is swift and accurate - landing the seven heroes in the middle of a grand entry foyer. The spinning of the shimmering portal beneath their feet slows and glowing sigils appear, fading in intensity as they revolve ever more slowly, eventually coming to a standstill.

Isaac feels disoriented. Snark tries to remember the name of the fellow Olostim suggested they ask for. Jasper and Makis take in the tall doors on opposing walls - one set almost disappearing behind an animated illustration of a night sky with stars, planets, and heavenly bodies. (Anyone who rolls Knowledge Planes vs DC 10 Highlight to display spoiler: {(will recognize Jericho Space.)}. Beatrix and Onesimos address the approaching elf, speaking to him at the same time as he addresses the group.

”You look lost? Have you ever been to Star Tower? Perhaps I can be of assistance?” volunteers a young looking male elf. Beneath your feet an elaborate glyph appears, and the elf starts. ”Please step off the circle…this way” he beckons, before continuing:”the teleportation circle gets busy this time of day!”

Once he has the group assembled a small distance away from the portal, he introduces himself:”I am Evander…Journeyman Evander…and this is the entrance to the Star Tower, home of the Star Mages Guild. You are expected? Who’s expecting you?”. His brow furrows in confusion, before he is temporarily distracted by activity at the centre of the room.

At the now shimmering teleportation circle, the figure of a stern looking half-elf materializes. Stepping briskly off the circle, he heads towards the doors bearing the animated illustration. A group of robed novices gawp, then disperse as he brushes past them, muttering ”Jackasses!” The doors open at a gesture from his hand, closing automatically once he has passed through.

Snark looks around in awe at the place. He whistles as he recognizes the animated map of Jericho Space. Then he looks down at the letter of introduction Olostim had given him. The Archmage's name is written on the thing. I really gotta pay better attention, he thinks to himself.

Snark replies to the elf that greeted them. "Hello Journeyman Evander. We're new here. I'm Snark Riverstone, and we got a letter here that I need to give to Boden Halistham, the Archmage of Conjuration. Any chance you could get us a meeting with him? It's kinda important."

Benni is surprised at Makis' pseudodragon, but recovers quickly. "We had a BloodWitch friend named Teddy who travelled with a mentor spirit in the shape of a giant frog, so your pe...rsonal companion is welcome."

"I sense, however, that it won't be able to be a perfect battle relay for us, Isaac. It looked as though simultaneously speaking and listening to multiple people is more difficult and might only be possible if it was not doing other actions like bringing the aforementioned spell assists."

At the tower, Benni notes the map of Jericho Space, and is quick to provide more information after Snark. "We were told we were expected and we have letters of introduction to Archmage Halistham."

DM Bob and Carla - ”And you are?”
Monday March 11th, 2024 11:06:38 PM

Jasper stares as the stern looking half-elf materializes and moves determinedly towards the metal doors bearing the illusory map of Jericho Space. Urist gives chase, bearing a gift. Unfortunately the troubadour is not quick enough, and arrives only to have the doors shut in her face! All but one of the novices snicker. A very thin, very pale she-elf in light blue robes looks sympathetically at the dwarf and says in a quiet voice: ”just as well you didn’t intercept him. That’s Archmage Jamusen. Teaches Transmutation. He’s turned more than one student into a jackass for failing a lesson. The changes are temporary, of course, but they are humiliating just the same.” She unconsciously rubs one slightly pointed ear with thumb and forefinger, before blushing - quickly glancing over at the closed doors.

Makist volunteers some information on his pseudodragon’s abilities, while Ellahee tries to charm Isaac.

Snark and Benni explain that they have letters of introduction and are at Star Tower to see Archmage Halisthan on a matter of some urgency. Beatrix holds up the rolled missive provided by Olostim.

Journeyman Evander unfurls the missive and reads a few lines before re-rolling the parchment. Straightening his robes, he bades the party follow him. Opening an inconspicuous door, he leads the group up several flights of winding stairs and along a curved corridor lined with small offices. The interior is quite grand with walls and floors of polished marble. Large tapestries depicting historical or mythological events hang from the walls, keeping out drafts and absorbing noise. Here and there strategically placed wooden benches - each one ornately carved with unique decorations - a few occupied individually or by pairs of students, with an instructor. Most are empty, however, it being still quite early in the morning.

At the end of the corridor a large oak desk sits positioned in front of a set of double oak doors. Seated at the desk is a robed woman of indeterminate years, short white hair tipped with lavender. Evander hands the letter to the woman, then, while the woman studies the correspondance, says ”Minerye will look after you now” before bowing and making his escape.

Taking a sheet of clean parchment, and a quill, Minerye looks the party over. ”Olostim is known to us. He writes here that there are seven of you, but doesn’t give an accounting. I see this is important, however before I interrupt the Archmage I will take down your full names and affiliations…” Bright blue eyes peer over half moon spectacles. ”And you are…?

Benni spends a look of sympathy to the young novice, commiserating with a nod of his head in her direction, before following the Journeyman. Walking the halls, he is ever more reminded of a institute of high learning with tenured faculty, and idly wonders if Beatrix has the same impression. Presented and queried by Mineyre, the cleric waits his turn before speaking. "We are the Luck Makers, adventurers from Heranmar on the Southern Continent. I am Onesimos Elpis, in the Common tongue 'Beneficial Hope', cleric of Flower."

His WLA badge prominent, Benni hopes people in Plateau City, the 'city of adventurers', will be favorable to his group.

DM Bob and Carla - ”Archmage Halisthan”

”Archmage Jaret Jamusen” volunteers Evander in response to Isaac’s question. ”Despite being ‘high in the instep’…haughty, some might say…he’s a good teacher and his successful students go on to become great wizards.” The journeyman student of magic raises an eyebrow at Urist’s comment and adds, ”don’t let ‘himself’ catch you making jokes like that!”

The Luck Makers quickly get the sense that the Guild takes the business of gathering magical information and exercising mastery over the arcane arts very seriously. Recognizing the formality of a hierarchical institution, they are on their best manners, and provide the requested information to the secretary guarding Archmage Halisthan’s door.

Benni, ever the diplomat, identifies the group as the Luck Makers from Heranmar on the Southern Continent and states his vocation.

Beatrix introduces herself and her familiar, very prettily.

Makis keeps things simple, wary of the Guild’s prejudice against spontaneous casters.

Jasper shyly introduces herself, owning her allegiance to her new home.

Snark makes a rare show of civility, and greets the administrative assistant with more courtesy than is usual for the gnome.

Minerye completes her notes, then peers over her half moon glasses at the blue haired gnome. Her serious demeanour gives way to sparkling eyes, and a smirk. ”Ha! No one’s called me Minnie in an age! Please have a seat. The Archmage is a busy person, but you’ve come a long way and Wizard Olostim is known to us.” When Minerye stands it’s clear that she’s not particularly tall for a human - certainly under 5ft - though she’s probably not as small around as she might have once been.

After a few moments behind closed doors, the secretary returns, and holds one of the double doors open, beckoning the party through. ”The Archmage will see you now!”

A chubby halfling in flowing robes stands with his back to a table on which an opened book rests face down. The print on the binding reads: ’Journye to the Moones - Vol. 6 by Lord Karleton Pobberington Whyte’. * Waving at three comfortable chairs, a large sofa and a low table set with a tea service and three different types of pies, he continues. ”I was just having second breakfast. Do join me. There are some floor cushions over there…somewhere. “ The halfling wizard proceeds to pour the tea. ”Cream? Sugar? Now what is this about Wizard Tenebris being lost at sea, and how did you become implicated in the matter? Here’s Olostim’s going on about a haunted Abbey, and insisting I see you about some…artefact? What is he going on about?”

The elf thanks the woman as they enter the Archmage's offices, and he beams a diplomatic smile at the offer of tea. "Thank you, sir, for the offer. A cup of tea and spot of milk would be just the thing!"

Not having any particular insight on the history of the Wold, the elf ignores the book and provides full attention to Archmage Bodeen. Benni selects a cushion near the tea and pours for everyone in simple elfin elegance as he nods in Snark's direction. "Thank you for seeing us on such short notice. Wizard Snark here can provide the happenings of Wizard Olostim and Wizard Tenebris: what she was bringing and he discovered led us directly to our quest."

Benni waits for the beginning of the story, sipping his tea, before launching into his explanation of the Haunted Abbey. "Archmage, when Wizard Olostim found the Jade Key and gave it into our keeping, we made our way into the Abbey, finally finding that deep beneath the ruins, magical ley lines meet and create six portals that are pathways for evil forces. An archlich is there, and wards the portals, but when he draws heavily from the ley lines, it creates disasters."

"He it was that told us of a magical artifact that might be able to close the portals called Azodall’s Lantern, made by Wizard Dallry Torazo. We know Wizard Azodall was of the Star Mages Guild, and thus hope to find a lead to end this threat to our people and land."

Then his buddy Benni puts him on the spot. Think, Snark, think! Oh yeah, the Journal of Talpa Tenebrous!

"Yeah, we found some stuff from a ship wreck, The Lucy I think. One of those things was a Journal of the wizard Talpa Tenebrous. Olostim was sad to see the journal, because Talpa was a friend of his and he was already worried that Talpa was late showing up. The journal indicated he was interested in an old Abbey near Heranmar. It's a pretty weird place, half in and half outta' the fey realm.

"Olostim found a key to the Abbey hidden in the spine of the Journal, which, well, that's pretty telling if ol' Talpa thought he had to hide the key in the spine of a book. I guess Talpa was workin' with one of your folks here, so sorry if this is bad news for you folks as well."

Then the little gnome will conjure an extended Unseen Servant and have it hand him a piece of pie so he doesn't make a mess of it crawling up and down off the sofa.

Wednesday March 13th, 2024 11:31:32 PM

Tea and pie are served, with Onesimos pouring out, and Snark’s unseen servant delivering the plates. Makis makes small talk with the Archmage, who is only too happy to confirm that it is a first edition, complete with the illustrated map! Once everyone is served, the conversation turns to the reason for the hero's’ visit.

The Luck Makers make a compelling argument for the Star Mages Guild assistance. Snark recounts how the party discovered Wizard Tenebris’ effects after a shipwreck and turned them over to Olostim. Benni picks up the tale, explaining how Olostim, knowing of the group’s interest in the Abbey provided them with a key found hidden in his friend’s journal, and how the party was finally able to make inroads into the place and what they discovered. Isaac reveals their purpose is to find an artefact that will close down the aberrant portals. Jasper points out that fixing things will have implications beyond Heranmar and Urist clinches the deal appealing to the Archmage’s (and the Guild’s) ethos and motivations. Beatrix hopes she is perceived as serious minded, as she sips her tea, and listens attentively.

Bodeen Halisthan studies the inside of his empty tea cup, where a few leaf fragments cling against the sides before he responds. ”Not a single one of you are members of any standing with our organization, and yet you have been friends of the Guild by your actions. Olistim vouches for you. Says you came to his rescue in a time of need. You salvaged Tenebris’ belongings and turned them over to Olistim for safekeeping. You have been generous with the information you have gathered from the Abbey, and do not guard it jealously, but share it willingly.” The halfling places his cup on the table, and settles back into the cushioned chair. ”Tyron Azodall was a renowned teacher here, but many years before my time. His work is still required reading for all our more advanced students. Two centuries ago he went missing under mysterious circumstances. To have his subsequent work revealed from beyond the grave and for it to have such implications…I hardly know what to think.”

The Archmage offers the services of an assistant to the party - actually the head of the Guild’s archival section. Azodall’s textbooks won’t be a problem - they are common enough, but his research papers, notes, drawings, and journals - are another matter. ”Dallrye Torazo? Never heard of him.”. He suggests the party members find lodgings, attend to whatever other business they have in town, and come back the next day - but not too early. ”Wilke Taproot. I’ll set him to the task of assembling materials for your review. Ask for him tomorrow. Minerye can suggest some places to stay.”

Snark hops down off the sofa. He speaks to his unseen servant. "Awright Spooky, we're headed out. Please put the dishes back on that tray, and then I want you to carry my backpack." Snark's hands his backpack to the unseen servant. It is well below the unseen servant's 20 lb. carrying capacity.

As the unseen servant is cleaning up, Snark addressed the Archmage. "Thank you sir. I look foward to meeting with Wilke tomorrow. If you don't mind my asking, would a halfling such as yourself be able to recommend a good pipe and tobacco shop in the city? What we get in Heranmar is mostly imported, and I thought I might lay in a good supply here."

Depending on the Archmage's answer, he may repeat the question to Minerye.

Oneismos listens carefully, and, noting a dismissal when he hears one, collects tea cups back to the tray and stands. "Thank you for your time, we will see Mineyre on the way out."

The cleric ensures they pause outside the Archmage's office and asks for lodging suggestions from the woman. "I was thinking of taking my friends to stay at the WLA at Adventurers Square, or the Temple of Love in the Trade Quarter, but if there is somewhere closer by, that would be helpful."

Once directions are obtained and the Luck Makers are walking out, Benni makes a point on how well the team was working. "We couldn't have expected a better outcome, and everyone's actions pitched in to make that happen. Beatrix, Urist, and Malik, you may not feel it, but I know our common purpose and goodwill to the greater community of good peoples means you are already full members of the Luck Makers!"

Benni's assurances that she belongs makes her wince. She pretty sure he meant well, but dang it no one will trust their 5 year olds to get schooling from someone who's known to run off to do dangerous stunts. Maybe they can talk about it later. Makis is pleased with how the meeting went. He files out of the Archmage's quarters with the group and has no input on where they should stay. To Benni's praise he smiles at how his brother works to build and strengthen his steam and adds I am not sure how it could have gone better.

Later to Snark he asks I see you are part of the WLA, like myself. Did you consider joining the Star Mages? To be honest, if they treated sorcerers and bloodwitches as equals I think I would have applied to join them.

"Hey! Why hasn't Benni kicked me off the team yet?"
"Because that would not be pie-us!"

"But why hasn't Bea kicked me off the team yet?"
"Cause then the team would be pie-bald!"

"And why hasn't Snark kicked me off the team yet?"
"Maybe he just can't bring himself to say farewell and good-pie."

DM Bob and Carla - ”An altercation”
Friday March 15th, 2024 12:58:25 AM

Tea things are tidied, and Snark learns the Archmage does indeed occasionally blow a cloud. Halisthan volunteers that he mixes his own sort from ingredients picked up at Puula’s Components in the Dragon Quarter and suggests the green mage might enjoy doing the same.

Benni, Makis and Urist muse on the successful outcome of the meeting, and how well the group worked together - though the dwarf feels lucky to even be ‘on the team.’

Jasper makes a mental note to ask someone at the Guild about the demon she saw whilst in the Abbey. Both she and Isaac are interested in seeing a bit of the City. The paladin would like to check in at WLA (Woldian League of Adventurer’s) headquarters and suggests if the party decides to split up, the WLA might be a good place to meet up afterwards.

Like many people who grow up in a big city, Beatrix might have taken her environs for granted. Now she is experiencing the city as a visitor, and is curious about where the party might spend the night.

Mineyre makes a couple of suggestions as she escorts the group through the labyrinth of halls and down the stairs to the reception area. Visitors to the Star Tower often take rooms above the tavern at the Adventurer’s Repose in the Hindquarter. It’s clean, close by, and reasonably priced. The Red Dragon Inn in the Dragon Quarter is for those with more coin looking for a boutique hotel experience. The Dancing Bear Inn and Kell’s Coffee House’ in the Circus Quarter is cheap and cheerful, though when the lively nightlife of the area spills out into the streets (as it often does) it can keep guests of the inn from getting a restful night. Of course the Golden Goblin Inn is right next store, but the secretary thinks it’s overpriced for what you get.

The party have yet to decide what they will do with the rest of the day, and where they will put up for the next couple of days, when they spill out the front door of the imposing tower that is home to the Star Mage’s Guild.

Across the way, in the shadows at the mouth of an alley just off the street, the group can see an older gentleman with white hair has a raggedly dressed half-elf pinned against the wall of a nearby building - one hand around the half-elf’s neck, and a rapier point at his chin!

Once outside, Snark sees the old man and the half-elf. As he lights his pipe, he says, "Well, this oughta be interesting. It looks like if the old fella with the sword wanted that guy dead, he'd be dead. If it's a robbery, he picked a bad place. Maybe we oughta see what's going on."

"I think we should at least stay at the same place while we are in Plateau City, in order to see each other at least morning and evening, and get messages. I say we should go to Adventurer's Repose."

On coming out of Star Tower, Benni takes a minute to gawk at the wonders of Magic Square. To the left, the walls of the Palace loom, but right in front of them: the Catacombs! With everything about, it takes Snark's comment to have the elf notice the ... altercation. The cleric glances about for a guard, and seeing none, takes the initiative by striding towards the older man and half-elf. "You two! If you have love of the goodness of others in your hearts, or even just self-preservation, tone down the scene in so public a place before the authorities show!"

Then she says to the poor, picked-on half-elf, "Don't worry, we'll get this settled and then welcome you to our group!"

Then, in a softer voice to just the half-elf, "Did you really pick his pocket, Eadric? Any special reason?"

DM Bob and Carla - ”An intervention”
Sunday March 17th, 2024 11:33:11 PM

There seems to be a consensus to putting up at The Adventurer’s Repose and possibly splitting up to attend to some personal matters, however, before the party get very far they spot what some think might be a robbery in progress and decide to intercede.

Benni and Urist address the older gent and the half elf, suggesting they stand down. The white haired fellow lowers his rapier, but keeps hold of the half elf whilst responding to the questions put to him (and asking who they might be?). The cleric and troubadour understand the older fellow to be telling the truth when he volunteers he was only defending himself.

As the group get closer, the grappled half elf catches sight of Beatrix and he blanches. Snark, Benni, Isaac, Jasper and the centaur all recognize Kelgorn - one of two brothers they caught trying to lure a sailing ship bound for Heranmar onto the rocky shoals some distance from the town. The Luck Makers had left him trussed up on the bluff when they went to explore the wreckers’ cave, however when the party got trapped in the cave overnight, the miscreant had made his escape - stealing one of the group’s rented ponies in the process. It had cost the party 40 GP for the stollen pony and tack - and some loss of face with the stable owner back in Heranmar.

Not quite understanding what is going on, Makis casts a spell and Urist attempts to defend the captured half elf.

Snark will cast an extended Mage Armor on himself. Then he motions to Makis to hand him Makis' pearl so he can cast Mage Armor on the bloodwitch.

Snark looks up at the man dressed in rags. He recognizes Kelgorn. His eyes narrow and through gritted teeth he says, "Hello Kelgorn."

He turns to the old man. "I'm Snark Riverstone and we call ourselves the Luck Makers, believing you make your own luck in the Wold. We know this guy - he's a thief and a murderer, and he escaped from us on the Southern Continent. We lack evidence that would convict him here, but certainly if your blade were to slip I doubt any would miss him - least of all those many souls he sent to a watery death in the shipwrecks he caused. Actually, we should walk him over to the Star Mages! One of those shipwrecks killed one of their members. They might very much like to get their hands on him for his misdeeds."

The little gnome is just over 3' tall, his tan skin contrasting with his pale blue hair and beard. He is dressed in brown pants and a long, green coat trimmed in yellow that goes to his knees. He carriers a small staff made of smooth driftwood and capped by a smooth, blue river stone. Did the swirl in that stone just move? Looking at it directly it's clearly just an opaque stone - but you could have sworn you saw a swirling motion in it.

"Stronger measures are necessary, I see. I'm sure we have enough evidence for the WLA or Star Mages Guild. We could also march him to the Halls of Pantheon, and the clerics there would know the truth for judgement and justice. For mercy, you may find little, unless... well, unless we instead take you to somewhere where you can truly atone for all the death and hardship you have caused."

Discussions are held as folks debate the fate of Kelgorn. Is he a hapless victim of ‘bad luck’, a hardened criminal, or a bit of both? Should the Luck Makers take on the roles of judge, jury, and executioner, or hand him over to a higher authority? As fate would have it, the decision looks like it might be taken from them.

A group of five uniformed individuals close in on the party - four fanning out behind a leader - as much to block anyone from escaping the alley as to stop curious onlookers from approaching from the street. There is no doubt these are Plateau City guards. There is a uniformity to their garb, including their weapons and armour - though the fellow leading the group is obviously of a different rank than the other four. This one barks out: ”Sheath your weapons! Now!” dark eyes take in the scene, noting Eadric with his hand around Kelgorn’s throat. ”What’s going on here?” However before anyone can respond, one of the other guards interrupts, inclining his halberd towards the half elf bandit: “excuse me Captain but that one fits the description of the fellow responsible for the smash-and-grab at the Black Genie Magic Shop…the one we’ve been looking for.”

The Captain will ascertain whether of not the folks surrounding the half elf are his associates. Satisfied that Jasper, Snark, Isaac, Makis, Benni, Beatrix, Urist and Eadric are not connected with Kelgorn or his crimes they will take the bandit into custody, releasing everyone else with the proviso that they not leave Plateau City in the next couple of days. Names are collected, as well as statements and a location where folks can be contacted should there be further questions after the half elf has been interrogated. By the time the guards discharge the party and cart off their prisoner, it’s early afternoon.

Urist tries to tip the guards of the city watch, thanking them for their service. "You guys look like you could use the money," she says, "so please take this donation."

If they take it, she'll subtract 20 gp from her wealth.

After they leave, she says to her friends, "The guards looked basically bankrupt, I thought, but they did a great job arresting that fellow."

"Even a broke watch is right twice a day."

She is happy to accompany the party to their lodgings. "You'll join us, Sir Eadric, right?"

Onesimos assures the Guard leader the Luck Makers have enough business to occupy several days in the city: "we have no intention of leaving until the Archmage provides his agreed upon information, good sir. If you need us, you may leave a message at the Adventurer's Repose." (he hopes a nonchalant reference to a Star Mage Archmage will both reassure the Guards of their intent to stay, and give a notch or two up on the importance of the group for future courtesy.)

The cleric laughs with good humor, not at Urist's joke but at her assumption. "If anything, my friend, it is we who will be accompanying the good Eadric! After all, he is already staying at the Repose while we are but newcomers."

"Master Eadric Wolff, I am Onesimos Elpis, called 'Benni' by most, and I greet you in well-being in our temporary time in the Wold. You have done our group, the Luck Makers, a good favor for tying up this loose end so neatly as we strike out for another serious matter for the entire region of the Gateway Downs. May you lead us to the Adventurer's Repose so we can buy you a meal and share the morning with stories?"

The pale elf with long brown hair has both the badge of the Woldian League of Adventurers pinned to his flower-motif cloak, and a woven-wicker High Woldian symbol of the love goddess, Flower, hanging from his neck.

Benni has no intention of forcing comradery on Eadric, instead gauging how the white-haired human reacts to a non-stressful offer.

Beatrix gets a little frustrated dealing with the guards and Urists horrible pun right afterwards makes her visibly restraining herself from throttling the dwarf. (Only IC though, OOC it was great). "Ok, screw it, I'm going home." she announces. By which she means she's going to her parents house to visit, probably spend the night, and she tells the group she'll meet them at the inn in the morning.

Makis watches Kelgorn be taken away with a somewhat sinister smile. He reaches into his haversack and touches the single hair contained there and ponders Had Beatrix not set my understanding of that lad ands crimes right I might have arranged a hard night for him. I suspect the guards will make it hard enough though. Still it is a comfort that I can find him, and worse should he somehow manage an escape. Snark, are we still going to the Dragon quarter? Perhaps after checking in at the Repose and a bit of lunch?

DM Bob and Carla - ”Lunch and learn…”
Wednesday March 20th, 2024 11:46:48 PM

Makis has the right of it - Kelgorn isn’t going to enjoy the guards’ idea of hospitality, however, before the bandit is hauled off to the nearest gaol, Isaac asks for details of the half-elf’s crimes in Plateau City. ”It was retail theft - a smash and grab - but he left the clerk at the Black Genie Magic Shop pretty beat up.” The guard grasps the manacled bandit by the upper arm, then adds: ”your sympathy is wasted. He’s a bad’un.”. When Urist offers 20GP in coin, the Captain raises one bushy eyebrow, but does not decline. He does however state all the money will be donated to the Widows and Orphans Fund - a charity routinely supported by the City’s constabulary. He also lets Onesimos know he isn’t worried about the group, but might have some follow-up questions after they’ve interrogated Kelgorn. The cleric gathers the party’s affiliation with the WLA makes a bigger impression on the guards, than name dropping an Archmage.

Beatrix and Jasper excuse themselves from the group heading to The Adventurer’s Repose. The druid strikes off in the direction of the Druid Quarter with the intention of loosing herself in the large urban wilderness park, while the centaur starts the long commute to the Trade Quarter and the home of her parents.

Eadric leads the way to the tavern and inn, but somehow gets his landmarks mixed up. The older adult eventually has to ask directions, and together the party reach their destination. Rooms are arranged after which the group gather ‘round a large communal table to share lunch and stories.

There is plenty of time for Makis and Snark to visit the Dragon Quarter after lunch, for Miles’ dispatches to be delivered to WLA headquarters, and a little sight-seeing in the Big City.

(For some reason I thought it was dinner time).

Beatrix has a lovely time having lunch with her family, telling them all about her new job. About how the locals only hold classes in the summer so she's been having to go about things in a less structured way, how her picture books and stories have been a huge hit, stuff like that. Oh and the local adventuring group is exploring some ruin and she's consulting with them. It's a fun side project to relax from her stressful teaching job but really not that big a deal.

She'll head back to the chosen inn around dinner time to reconnect with the group.

Onesimos uses the luncheon at the Adventurer's Repose to thank Eadric for his help through food, drink, and tales of what the Luck Makers have done. "Excitement has not been lacking for us, that is certain. The folk of Heranmar are a superstitious lot, but I am beginning to understand why in a land so filled with fey, undead, and lesser haunts and strange occurrences of all types. Hunters have gotten lost in the swamps to the west, and frog-men have raided from there as well. Pirates, both living and undead have besieged the town's north and east, not to mention the haunted Abbey with a mysterious past to the south. Each time, we have worked together to defend the good people and make the lands a little safer."

Benni doesn't talk about their current quest (he is only thanking Eadric for his fortunate help with Kelgorn, and he hasn't heard any verbal interest from the white haired swordsman), but on impulse, the cleric asks. "Have you ever come across information on a certain Wizard called Dallry Torazo? This is one of the current leads our team is looking for in our next quest to help the people of Heranmar."

Experience besides brawling in the gladiatorial pits and teaching stuck up brats how to fence. If you'd have me, I'd love to tag along, at least to test the waters."

You can tell Eadric is genuinely excited about the prospect of adventuring and facing new foes and new situations, if not slightly apprehensive.

Turning to Snark, he says "Well, I'm not sure. I've been cooped up here in the Adventurer's Repose for a week or two now and I couldn't even find my way back!"

Rooms are arranged, and lunch spoken for. Over a convivial meal those in attendance exchange information and make plans.

Benni makes an effort to get to know Eadric a little better, carefully assessing the man’s reaction to his tales of Heranmar’s challenges. The cleric is careful to avoid mention of their current mission, though he can’t resist asking the fighter if he’s ever heard the name Dallry Torazo. The elf gets the sense that it’s more than a mid-life crisis, and that Eadric is genuinely enthusiastic about testing his skills in a less structured setting than has been his experience.

Makis starts to feel less like an observer, and more like one of the party as he listens to his brother and the other Luck Makers converse. After lunch he and Snark head out for a little retail therapy in the Dragon Quarter after asking their new friend for directions.

Isaac is interested in locating a bookshop, hoping to purchase a text on the topic of devils, demons, and outsiders. Urist is flexible and after freshening up, rejoins her friends. The clever elf maiden manages to snag a simple map provided by the inn, and is able to locate Puula’s Components and Gryphon Books and direct her friends successfully to these shops. The sales assistant at Puula’s is more than happy to work with the greenmage to create a custom blend, and Isaac finds a slim tome titled: ‘Faces of Evil - a guide to devils, demons, and outsiders.’

It’s a long trek through town, but Beatrix eventually finds her way to the Trade Quarter and the home of her parents - both of whom are happy, if surprised to see her. The centaur regales her family with tales of her teaching experiences and interactions with the townsfolk of Heranmar omitting some of the scarier bits. Though she hasn’t been away terribly long, ‘home’ seems smaller than when she left for the adventuring life, and she decides to rejoin her friends at the Adventurer’s Repose.

After a refreshing gambole through the wilderness in the Druid’s Quarter a tired (in a good way) Jasper returns to the inn.

There’s time for the party to reassemble for a late supper and some last minute planning before retiring for the night.

(OOC: feel free to elaborate on your experiences visiting the Quarters and shops you’ve chosen, how you spend your evening and night, morning, and breakfast. The next DM post (Sunday pm) will have you back at the Star Mages Tower.)

Adventuring life? Clearly you mean teaching life. As do her parents as they knowingly smile to each other when she downplays her "consulting job".

Anywho, after she returns to the tavern she mostly hangs out. There's a some new people in the party and even the other party members she possibly hasn't spent much time getting to know so she's happy to just swap tales and get to know everyone. She's even a in a good enough mood to endure Urist's puns, though she is slowly becoming convinced the dwarf is some sort of mad seer when she hears that Eadric will in fact be joining the group. Perhaps the strange personality changes are a side effect of over-exposure to the future and the puns are a light hearted coping mechanism?

Excusing himself with a promise to talk more in the evening, the elf leaves the Adventurer's Repose and crosses Adventurer's Square to the WLA Headquarters, and delivers Miles' copies of reports, and answer any questions. But he doesn't intend to stay long.

As soon as he can, Benni exits the WLA by taking a sharp right, then exits Dragon Quarter by taking Gold Dragon Trail to Centaur Street and through the Circus Quarter. After crossing Buckler Bridge to Trade Quarter, he takes Shield Street to Helms Way and the Open Palm Market, arriving at the Temple of Love. He spends the rest of the day until dusk alternately sitting in a comfortable love seat in the inner temple, or taking his turn on the heart-shaped stage to tell one of his stories about the Luck Makers and their demonstrations of Philia (friendship), Agape' (universal love), and Pragma (love of a common purpose).

He hurries back to the Adventurer's Repose at dusk.

Beatrix is happy to expound on her backstory. "My family moved here a few generations ago looking for a better life, so I grew up a city kid who didn't leave town much. My parents enrolled me in classes the local Sage's Guild had as a foal. I took to it fast and soon was spending every moment of free time reading and learning When other kids had problems with a lesson I was always happy to help walk them through it so it was only natural as I got older I started working with my teachers to learn how to best teach others with a goal of keeping the tradition going."

She stops and looks embarrassed, but these folks already know her side hobbies so there's no point hiding the rest of the story. "My study of magic mostly came of my general studies and interest in most everything. I probably would have never left the city, happy to take over for my teachers as they got older or moved on if not for a particularly bad day. I was supposed to drop off some reading material to a poor family in a bad part of town. Of course stuff happened and I was running late so there I was hurrying towards my destination barely paying attention to my surroundings and I walk right into an ongoing gang war. Two groups arguing over territory started scrapping and the whole fight exploded onto the street and just sort of engulfed me.

It should have been terrifying, I only knew a spell or two at the time, none of which were good for self defense, and soon I was kicking with my hooves and smashing thugs over the head with my books just to get through the fight to safety. Despite everything it was the most thrilling moment I'd had in my life. When I got to the other side I was all bruised up but nothing to bad and I had to stop myself from wading back in like an idiot. I'm sure if they weren't so focused on each other any one of them could have beaten me senseless, I wasn't exactly strong or well trained at the time, but a need to get in another scrap one day just took hold.

So I dropped off the material and went the long way around to get home. Scarred the kid and his parents pretty bad with my appearance when I showed up I'll say. That's a big part of my worry helping out with this other stuff, no parent wants their kid's teacher to set a bad example, running off and getting into fights.

After that whole thing I turned my studies to physical improvement as much as mental. There's a surprising amount of material on how best to exercise various muscles and fight with a lance. I read as many as I could get my hands on and have been working hard to put into practice their teaching. I'd say the results show for themselves."
She flexes.

"Given my new hobbies a move to someone more wild seemed appropriate. Unless I wanted to join the guard there wasn't much call for beating up folks in the city, and trying to do two full time jobs was not happening. My teachers and I figured the Southern Continent was a good place, lots of wild country and exotic magic to study, not to mention places like the abbey. Haranamar was a good starting point as a town big enough to have a dock, but isolated enough that they could likely use a good teacher. If not I could branch out to some other smaller town. Course it turned out "education" in town is just a few weeks of summer lessons and that's it. Understandable, but I'm hoping I can expand that a little if I can ever meet the elders in charge of such things. The kids seem enthusiastic but the rest of the town seems to have just lumped me in as one of you guys so I haven't made much progress with the adults or figuring out who to talk to about expanding the education to whomever wants it. There's a lot of stuff and skills that's just good to know for anyone even if they just fish for a living."

Once he knows where to go, Snark and Makis will head over to Puula’s Components in the Dragon Quarter. He will talk to the proprietor about a tobacco blend that will suit his tastes, and he will purchase a goodly amount to share with friends back in Heranmar. He'll also purchase a few new pipes with woodland themes, choosing a larger one for Olostim.

He'll look around both the Dragon Quarter and the Hindquarter where the Adventurer's Repose is located. He'll eventually return to our inn and talk to his friends - especially the new guy Eadric. "So, Rick - yer a fighter eh? Well, we do run into some scrapes from time to time. You're welcome to hang with us, and even make the trip back to Heranmar if you're inclined to go that far. We can always use another meat shie ... I mean meaty fighter in our group."

When Jasper asks about everyone's story, Snark replies, "OK Jasper, but you gotta share your story too."

Snark takes out one of his new pipes, lights it, and puffs away as he talks.

"As for me, well, I don't got no brothers or sisters like Benni and Makis here. It was just me and my Mom and Dad. Mom was an herbalist and Dad was a carpenter. He was a member of the Woldian League of Adventurers. He disappeared one day, and all Mom would say was that that he was called away to an important task and nuthin more. I'd like to find out what happened to my Dad, but the WLA pretends they don't know nothing about him.

"Eventually, I set out on my own. I travelled in the forests and the hills mostly. Spent some time in Zaran City, but the city wasn't my thing.

"One day travelling though the hills, I come across a bunch a' dead goblins. There was a goblin girl among 'em near death. I was tempted to just leave her, but, well, I just couldn't do that. So I nursed the kid her back to health. She said she was the daughter of the Chief of the Nosepick Tribe and she led him back to her father for a reward. That went alright at first, but like things usually go with goblins, it all went to crap.

"They took me in as an honored guest, but you won't be surprised to learn there wasn't no reward and I was just some sorta trophy prisoner. The girl called me her little pet gnome and made me do magic tricks for her. Every time I tried to sneak away, they always drug me back. Worst two years of my life! I learned their language and a lot of things I'd like to forget - they was a nasty bunch, even for goblins. Eventually they got attacked by the Buttsmack Tribe, and in the confusion I managed to escape.

"I wound up in Hook City for a spell, apprenticed to a dwarf wizard named Elgor Blackheart. He was a rotter, he was! Used his magic cheat people out of their money. I snuck away in the middle of the night and signed on as a carpenter on the next ship leaving town, and eventually ended up in Heranmar.

"That's where I met this lot. I still see my Mom from time to time, and I'd like to know what happened to my Dad, but these folks here are my new family."

The party wrap up a rather eventful first day in Plateau City elaborating on introductions, and at Jaspers’s prompting sharing motivations for embarking on the adventuring life. The usually reserved Beatrix opens up and an unusually serious Urist exhibits an understanding of the centaur’s feelings.

Snark shares the dark story that is his past, making one marvel at his fortitude in overcoming adversity, and perhaps providing an accounting for his ofttimes abrasive demeanour. Makis comiserates with the blue haired gnome.

Isaac purchases the book he finds and Jasper shows an interest. (It takes 8 hours to read the book cover to cover, after which you gain a +2 bonus to Knowledge rolls when dealing with demons, devils, and outsiders - probably Knowledge Planes. This will take a while ‘cause you’ll be busy).

Having settled things at the Adventurer’s Repose, and dropped off Miles’ dispatches at WLA headquarters, Benni spends some time with those of a like mind (and heart) at the Temple of Love before returning to meet up with his friends at the Inn.

Eadric appears keen on the idea of adventuring with the Luck Makers and gets the sense that he is welcomed by most of them, before retiring to his room for the night.

Eventually, the party joins up for a leisurely breakfast. They’re not supposed to show up too early - according to the instructions received from the Archmage. Finally they strike out for the Star Mages Tower and enter the reception area, this time, via the large front doors.

Once through the doors you spot your previous guide, the elf Evander in conversation with a scholarly looking gnome with a large book under his arm.

Onesimos the night before listens closely to his friends, but gives little himself. His own story is known to all save Eadric and only his beginning to Malik, but with Beatrix and Snark fully opening up, the elf doesn't want to flood the night with too many stories.

Also a light sleeper, the morning for Benni is for ablutions, meditations, and breaking his fast with light but delicious foods at the Repose. Lingering over a last herbal tea, he sees no harm in giving plenty of time to the Star Mages. And makes a decision on Eadric as well. "By all means, you can travel with us, and may we be of mutual assistance." Eight Luck Makers, now, they saunter the easy walk from the inn to the Star Mage Tower.

Gaining entrance, Benni nods, and walks to Journeyman Evander and the gnome, hardly expecting a second audience with the Archmage. "Blessings of the Seven Loves to you, Journeyman, and to you good sir. I hope we have arrived neither too late nor too early, but precisely when the Archmage meant to?"

Jasper places a hand on her heart. "Snark and Beatrix, thank you. Beatrix, I didn't have a lot of formal schooling. If you want a student, you have one in me.

Snark, by leaf and branch! Leave it to goblins to repay a kindness with servitude. Your compassion, even after all of that, amazes me."
She bows her head.

"The hour grows late, so I'll be brief: My sacred duty is to protect the Culverwood and the wild places of the Wold. I betrayed that trust by saving a pair of human children who had been abonded in my forest. My punishment was exile." Her hands tigthen in her lap. "Those first years were... difficult. I spent more time in animal form than my own. And then, one day I saw a ship being attacked by a sea drake. And here we are."

The next day at the Star Tower, she listens to Benni's salutations. She hopes the Luck Makers aren't interrupting second breakfast.

He turns to Jasper. Not one to mince words, he says, "You got in trouble for saving kids? I'm glad you're with us. I don't want to speak ill of your folks there in the Culverwood, but they sound like jerks."

Later, when we return to the Star Mage's Tower snark is pleased to see another gnome here. "Hey Evander - good to see you. And I'm guessing you must be Wilke Taproot."

Snark will go over the information we have and the magical lantern we are seeking, hoping that our new research assistant can shed some light on this.

DM Bob and Carla - ”Finding Dallry”
Monday March 25th, 2024 10:52:37 PM

Isaac, Benni and Snark greet Evander and the gnome, while Jasper, Beatrix, Eadric and Makis look on. ”You are neither too early, nor too late” acknowledges the tall elf, then, with a sweep of his hand in the direction of the scholarly looking gnome he adds, ”Wilke Taproot, Head of the Guild’s archival section”.

Wilke listens to Snark’s recitation of the group’s mission to find a magical artifact called Azodall’s Lantern. The party believe it was made by a wizard named Dallrye Torazo. Wizard Azodall was known to be of the Star Mages Guild, and thus the party hopes to find a lead to the artefact amongst his papers.

”Yes! Yes! Bodeen asked me to take on your case. I’ve had my staff working on it since yesterday.” Wilke leads the way through the same door the party passed through the day before, but this time the climb is maybe one story, and then along a hall and through a door into a large room with a big table in the middle. Ledgers, books, and journals are piled haphazardly on the table, and there are boxes around the perimeter of the room. You get the sense wading through the papers is not a matter of hours, but rather several days.

”Everyone has heard of Tyrone Azodall. These boxes over here contain lesson plans and student lists for the various courses taught by him. Those boxes over there contain documents related to his research projects. There are textbooks on the table either authored or co-authored by him, as well as some books from his personal collection that he left behind when he disappeared. Over there are his financial ledgers.”

The head archivist shares that when the wizard disappeared quite suddenly, there was talk that he had become involved in something dangerous and possibly illegal. When the authorities investigated, they found his office and apartments ransacked. The same week members of one of the thieves guild were found dead, their bodies dumped in the Scar, a blighted area of town in the Nightmare Quarter. ”But that was all a long time ago…”

The archivist claims he’s never heard of Dallry Torazo, but has alerted his staff to widen their search. He leaves the party to sift through the materials, returning every couple of hours to see how the party progresses, dropping off new materials, and answering any questions.

All players please identify the types of documents you search through and roll 2 Perception checks.

Snark thanks Evander and Wilke for setting all this up, though the sheer volume seems a bit intimidating.

He'll take the time to go over what we know again for Makis and Eadric to give them a frame of reference for what to seek out in these writings. Then he assesses what we have before us.

"Awright. Looks like these are the types of documents we have:

- Research projects
- Text books written by Tyrone
- Other books from Tyrone's personal collection
- Financial ledgers

Oh, and most importantly, I got snacks to share."

Snark will set up his study area. He chooses a tall chair to allow the little gnome to actually use these tall human sized tables. He gets out some snacks of dried fruits and nuts, because you can't study on an empty stomach, and he will share with everyone else. Then his little bat Luna will crawl up on his shoulder.

"Good Luna, you can help me look through this stuff." Being an wise little familiar, Luna has +10 on Perception, so she can Aid Another and add +2 to Snark's Perception checks.

That said, I will review the financial ledgers unless you wish to assign me elsewhere. And Benni, could you manage an Angry or Divination to help us find what is importantI am unsure if you normally prepare such spells?

As Makis settles down to work he makes a face as if tastings something unpleasant and nods as if agreeing to himself about something. This spell always freaks me out a little but there is no doubt that it will help me in my search. He removes a small silver crescent and with some arcane gestures and not a single word the elf rapidly ages to a grey-haired elven elder. Onesimos is introspective, a bit unusual for him when there are people to speak with, as they are led through the Star Mage Tower. Several of his friends have had life-changing events, even Eadric whom he barely knows. The cleric understands no one can live another's life, but it is hard for him to think of how very difficult some people's obstacles have been compared to his own.

The room absolutely full of papers is daunting, and Benni is grateful of Wilke Taproot's explanation of teh mysterious disappearance long ago, that was going to be his first question! The elf is also thankful for Snark's organization. "So many people have gone over Tyrone Azodall's public books and texts, I feel that would be a dead end. I remember at Temple, there was an acolyte who was an avid student of one priest, and named a fan club Dimbleportal's Brigade. Azodall's Lantern could be named by a student with inspiration and admiration.' Further, the cleric thinks, looking at lists of names would be very boring and most people wouldn't do it, another factor in favor.

Makis has a good idea on divination spells. Benni never prepares them ahead of time, but he always has about half his spell slots 'open' to later fill as needed on days when he is not specifically adventuring. A 15 minute meditation acquires an Augury spell, and one minute of casting lets the follower of Flower to put out a question into the Wold: "Will the LuckMakers get a lead to find Azodall's Lantern if we review the information in this room?"

Pending the answer, Benni sets down to scan Student Lists.

Wednesday March 27th, 2024 1:00:30 AM

The party focus on the task at hand and begin the work of sifting through the mountain of documents sourced by Wilke Taproot and his crew. Near the end of the first day, Urist gets caught licking the pages of a ledger, thereby smearing the figures. The furious archivist threatens to kick the Luck Makers out of Star Tower until Archmage Halisthan, dropping by to check on the progress of the group, convinces him otherwise. The archivist settles for banishing the troubadour from the premises instead.

Jasper and Snark tackle Azodall’s personal collection of books, setting aside titles of interest. On the second day while examining a book titled Beholders and Their Kin - An Unnatural History several yellowed news clippings on organized crime in Plateau City flutter from the pages.

Beatrix rummages through boxes containing research papers and finds works on major creations and crafting wondrous items.

Eadric finds some intriguing treatises on expanding the use of permanency spells. In the same box, documents on increased range, area, and duration of spells and research papers on the topic of anti-magic shields, arcane sight, and true seeing.

Benni sorts through the lists of students names and recognizes some as ‘big name’ wizards in more recent times. He does not find the name Dallry Torazo, however.

On the first day Makis finds intriguing notations documenting payments made to 6 adventuring groups for very large sums for ‘collection of specimens’. There are also regular outlays for different spell components, spell books, and scroll supplies. On the second day he comes across odd payments to a general mercantile in Hovel made by Dallry Torazo for general supplies, locks, oil, food, etc. as well as some ‘final payments’ to various adventuring groups.

Isaac finds some worn texts on the history and geography of the Scab and surrounding area. The archivist denies having any records related to the break ins, claiming those would have been kept by the guards, if they held such records that long. On the second day Wilke lets the paladin know that although Azodall’s office and apartment had been used by others in the long time since his disappearance, the apartment was currently empty should Isaac or anyone else care to have a look.

The study room full of wizard Tyron Azodall’s documents remains at the party’s disposal, with the exception of Urist who is persona non grata at Star Tower.

It’s now day three.

He's not sure of the exact meaning of the phrase, but one of his mentors had to have used it... The elf nods at Beatrix, the idea WAS hers and Benni didn't remember until he saw the list of names.

The elf is encouraged by the couple of leads so far, which gives him the energy to keep going.
"One, Wizard Azodall hired adventurer groups to get ingredients and we know the Lantern was made from the main eye of six beholders."
"Two, Dallry Torazo worked for Azodall and was a connection with merchants and some adventurer groups. Anyone know where Hovel is? Maybe near Plateau City or the Scar?"
"Three, a connection between beholders (the book) and organized crime (the news clippings) and Azodall rumors on his disappearance."

"Let's see if there are any other leads, and maybe some specifics: the names and locations of adventurer groups, the merchant, the crime organizations. Also, we know that it was 'long ago'. How long? There is a great deal of difference between 50 years ago (where someone may still be alive) and 500 years."

Benni reads the newsclippings, and the notations on Dallry, Hovel, and adventurers that the team has already found to seek more specific clues.

DM Bob and Carla - ”Finding Dallry”
Wednesday March 27th, 2024 11:56:59 PM

Benni summarizes what the various party members have shared regarding their searches of the materials made available to them and reconciles that information with what they know from their encounter with the archlich abbot of Herenmar’s haunted abbey and their reading of brother Corbin’s journal. He believes:

-Tyron Azodall hired adventuring groups to get ingredients, and the artefact they seek is a lantern made with the lenses from the main eye of beholders.
-Dallry Torazo worked for Azodall as an intermediary, procuring goods and services
-there might be a connection between beholders, organized crime, and Azodall’s dissappearance.

Curious at the mention of Hovel, the elf asks if anyone knows where it’s located.

On the third day folks get through the last of Tyron Azodall’s archive as provided by the Star Mages Guild, and share any new information they’ve gleaned from the mountain of documents.

Makis and Eadric switch off. The elf looks over the information collected by the older man, and while the fighter didn’t seem to understand the significance of the documents, the Bloodwitch recognizes all that magic supports the idea of the relic the party seeks - a magical lantern with antimagic properties. Meanwhile, the fighter finds an entry in the financial documents for a purchase of land described only by local co-ordinates but located somewhere near the Red Hills.

Jasper suggests making further enquiries regarding the adventuring parties for hire, or the location of Hovel.

Having grown up in the City and having a pretty good idea of the geographical environs, Beatrix knows Hovel is north of Plateau City, somewhere between the Culverwood, the Red Hills, and the Scab. Knowing what to look for, the centaur finds a simple hand drawn map that places the village? town? on the Chaos Road (also known as the Road of Troubles) west of the halfling village of Humbles Ford, maybe 3 days travel from Plateau City?

The textbooks don’t reveal anything to Snark, other than perhaps the brilliant mind of the wizard. The newspaper clippings are another matter. They document robberies, fires and arsons, disappearances, and murders throughout the city - indicative of some sort of turf war between criminal elements.

Based on the dates on documents - especially the newspaper articles and the financial papers - it appears that wizard Azodall’s focus shifted from his work at Star Tower to something else around the time of the turf war in the city and his disappearance was shortly after things died down. All this occurring over a century earlier - maybe 150 years in the past.

The group has wrapped up their research, and wrung what information they can from Tyron Azodall’s archives.

Urist, still in her elf maid disguise, sees the same individual walk by several times over the course of her exile. "Huh, probably someone taken with my incredible good looks," she thinks. "That's the price I pay for beauty, I guess. Plus, elves are hot."

Then she considers that maybe, just maybe, this person is up to no good. Literally. "Well, Lady Flower would want me to be up to GOOD, right?" A plan hatches in her head.

When this person is out of sight, Urist dons another disguise, this time to look completely different. She gauges the person and designs the disguise to be appealing to the strange person, hiding her WLA badge. (Kindly DMs, please modify for age, race, gender as Urist thinks would work best.)

Disguise (with hero point) 31

She has a "chance" meeting with her/him, a bit away from the Tower. Drops a hand kerchief, or just smiles, or something like that. She chats him up, flirts a little, She invites him/her to lunch, introduces herself, tries to be friendly, flirts a little more, to get to know him, to draw her out. With luck, this reveals some interesting info. She asks no prying questions, though.

Diplomacy (in for a penny, in for a pound using a third hero point) 47

Hopefully she gets an hour. At the end of her hour, she has used her troubadour ability (lesser inner beauty) to change this person's heart.

Will save DC 15 or change alignment to good for four days. After four days, the person can choose to stay good, or go back to their old alignment.

Per the DM Post, the party will be busy for three days. If everything goes well with Urist's plan, that means she has a three-day whirlwind romance / friendship with this person! Three days to just have fun in Plateau City with a new pal, going to shops, visiting the Temple of Flower, getting to know each other, enjoying life, laughing, showing her new friend that it is better to be good! And who knows what happens next? Life is an adventure!

Eadric also chips in with his opinion.

"I do agree with Isaac, ruffians usually do not take kindly to a bunch of armed individuals asking questions. However, I do think we need to ask; If we leave here before checking there's nothing to help us in The Scar, we may regret it later."

Let's go check out this guy's apartment, and then go see about the closest "Hovel" before we go trapsing across the country. Who's gonna be in charge of making sure Urist doesn't lick things?"

DM Bob and Carla - ”Wrapping up?”
Friday March 29th, 2024 12:08:29 AM

By the time the party wraps up their work in the archives, it is past noon. Exiting Star Tower, they find Urist cooling her heels on the steps of the building. Though she noticed someone with an interest in her, or in persons entering and exiting the Star Tower, the troubadour (even disguised) was unable to get close. Cognizant of being discovered, the skittish observer disappears into the shadows of the Dragon Quarter and is not spotted again.

There is some discussion over what to do next:

Beatrix is for taking a trip to Hovel

Benni is okay with going to Hovel, but wants to visit the Scar in Nightmare Quarter, but maybe check in with the WLA first?

Makis thinks the Scar might be dangerous, but doesn’t contradict his brother.

Eadric wants to leave no stone unturned, but isn’t keen on confronting ruffians.

Jasper approves the idea of visiting the WLA, however reveals a curiosity about the Scar

Isaac thinks seeking out a criminal gang is a horrible idea! The paladin reminds the group Brother Corbin’s journal referenced a tower in a valley where the wizard sought refuge and lived a reclusive life, kept safe by his magical creation. The elf suggests there might be a wizard’s tower out Hovel way. However, Isaac would like to make a quick visit to checkout Azodall’s old apartment first.

Snark shows some interest in visiting the wizard’s old apartment, before traipsing off into the countryside.

The WLA offices and Tyron Azodall’s apartment are close at hand. Folks can split up and visit both and be back at the Adventurer’s Repose for dinner. The Nightmare Quarter is on the other side of the Big City and likely couldn’t be reached before nightfall.

If Isaac, Snark or anyone else visits the apartment, they find a series of empty chambers on the third floor of a very old building. The vacant rooms are old fashioned and seem relatively untouched, however the small kitchen and water closet appear to have been renovated in the past 20 years. Perception Check vs DC 15 Highlight to display spoiler: { reveals a loose brick in the fireplace where a small cubby hole might have been used to hide precious things. It is empty.}

Benni would be recognized at the WLA having previously delivered Miles’ dispatches. He, and anyone else wearing WLA pin badges would be well received at headquarters. One of the League’s primary tasks is to gather local knowledge and information, and to offer members situational awareness in the Wold.

Beatrix is surprised to hear the mage's old apartment hasn't been rented out since his death. It seems highly inefficient. Not being a WLA member she'll go over there and look around mostly out of curiosity, not really expecting to find anything important. (9 perception)

(Per 27Mar DM post the apartment has been used by others, but is currently between renters - DM Carla)

Onesimos nods in time with his brother; any venture into the Scar of Nightmare Quarter or outside Plateau City would need a show of the whole team. However, just staying around Dragon Quarter should be safe enough: he favors a split and meeting back at the Adventurer's Repose.

Leaving those who want to check out the old apartments, he leads the group who wants to go to the WLA to that organization's headquarters. Yesterday he was providing information, this time, he's asking for any information that may track either lead: a crime gang or adventurer group in the Scar of Nightmare Quarter, or information on the location of Azodall's Tower. (Benni blesses Isaac's memory, the elf completely forgot about that!)

During the evening meal, as the team shares information, Benni reflects that it would probably be more fruitful to find and explore Azodall's Tower. It would be unlikely for the organized crime of 150 years ago to still be in existance and have a powerful artifact.

Snark will investigate the apartment where Azodall lived many years ago. He doesn't expect to find much after so long. "Good thinking Jasper, casting Detect Magic."

Being small, he thinks his bat familiar may offer a different vantage point. He will cast Detect Magic (share spells) on both Luna and himself as they both search the apartment. "Luna - fly up high and down low and see if there's anything we might miss."

Luna - Perception 12
Snark - Perception 18

He'll check the back of the niche in the bricks - just in case there's a false back to the space.

Satisfied that the Luck Makers have done a proper search, he'll make his way back to the Star Mage's tower and ask about the best way to get to the town of Hovel in the Crescent Valley. He's excited about the prospect of investigating a wizard's tower there.

DM Bob and Carla - ”Way Leads Onto Way…”
Sunday March 31st, 2024 10:04:12 PM

The party split up to do a little exploring and make some enquiries.

Half the party are intrigued by Tyron Azodall’s old apartment. In the century or so since the wizard disappeared, it has seen a steady stream of occupants, though it is currently vacant. It’s proximity to Star Tower making it popular with those who work or study at the Guild. Nothing has been left behind by the previous tenants - not even traces of magic for Jasper or Snark to detect or items for Beatrix or Isaac to find. The paladin does find a secret cubby - but alas, it is empty.

Benni leads a quiet delegation to the building that serves as headquarters for the Woldian League of Adventurer’s where he, and Urist are very well received - and any companions accompanying them are welcomed. The first officer they meet provides them with information about the Scar in Nightmare Quarter and suggests it be avoided. Only the most destitute of ne’er do wells try to make it their home, and generally they don’t fare very well. The more organized criminal gangs are, unfortunately spread throughout the city. He is also able to provide the group with a useful map, and some advice: ”Hovel is a small, traditional halfling village and the first settlement in the valley. There’s a decent inn in the village called Patty’s Place. The roads are generally easy and well marked, but can be dangerous. There’s been some trouble with bandits bothering trade caravans and wealthy travellers.”.

The officer takes the group deeper into the building, and rousts an old timer to answer Benni’s questions pertaining to earlier times. ”Before my time, but I remember reading about it. There was some trouble between two crime families in the city. Got pretty bad, then the leader of one of the families went missing, and things quieted down. Don’t know nothin’ ‘bout no Azodall’s Tower, but do know he tried to hire some adventuring groups through the WLA. A few took on the work, but later reported something smokey was going on. We stopped posting jobs from him, and some fella who settled the accounts after the wizard up and left the city. Fella went by the name of Dallyrumple Tallyho or something-or-other…not sure.”

Everyone meets up for dinner at the Adventurer’s Repose and share their findings.

The next day there is time for some provisioning before striking out in the direction of the Culverwood and the Red Hills or the Luck Maker’s can spend another day in Plateau City.

Onesimos thanks the WLA for the information, and tells what he knows to the Luck Makers over the evening meal. While interesting for piecing together clues, the Nightmare Quarter looks to be a dead end, and he recommends the team go to Hovel. He even has a map! "There should be a road from Plateau City thru Windhorn Hamlet and Angel Springs to Hovel. We can look for Azodell's Tower there."

Benni has no shopping he feels he needs, and is ready to go when the team is.

She asks the old timer if any of those adventurers were dwarves or elves or folk who may still be around somewhere.

Eadric stays quiet throughout the trip, tagging along with Benni and Urist. Eadric never really had time for the WLA, so he is interested in visiting and seeing how things work there. His time is spent observing random passerby's, and the bureaucratic processes of the WLA.

Agreeing with Benni back at the Adventurer's Repose, he believes checking out the Hovel is the next course of action, and is ready to head out whenever the party is.

I don't know our route, but we need to stay as far away from the Culverwood as we can. In fact, Urist, it might be a good idea if you can cast Disguise on me while we're in the vicinity."

She plucks a flower from her hair and shreds the petals from it as she speaks. This clearly isn't her favorite topic.

"OK. You said there are bandits. Let's talk tactics. If we can see them coming, I can cast Entangle before any of the rest of the party gets into the area of effect, then we could pick them off at range.

"Hmm. Hovel's halfling country. It's also pretty far. Would going by ship be better? If not, we'll need horses or a wagon or something. I can conjure a horse, but I can't do that for everyone."

Snark asks at the Star Mages if he can get access to or purchase the Floating Disc spell, thinking it might be of use on this trip.

Snark will ask at the WLA/Star Mages/Inn about the possibility of going to Hovel by land or by sea. He'll also ask about horses.

DM Bob & Carla: Travel Arrangements
Monday April 1st, 2024 11:12:56 PM

The Luck Makers gather at the Adventurers Repose and talk through their options. Benni and Beatrix voice the opinion that a trip to Hovel, some three days distance, should be their next destination. Eadric and Jasper are in agreement although the druid is concerned about entering the Culverwood from where she has been banished. Going by the maps provided, she would indeed be crossing into the very northeastern edge of that great forest.

Concerned about the distance to Hovel, Snark questions whether a boat trip will be quicker, or if horse and wagon would be the best bet. A closer examination of the map shows the most direct route to be by road due north to Windhorn Hamlet and then by the coastal road to Angel Springs before turning west along the Chaos Road. A sea voyage, if one could be easily arranged, would require a much longer distance over often unpredictable waters. The gnome’s inquiries about a spell are met with indifference, after all he is not a member of the guild and they are not a charity. ”Perhaps you could buy a scroll at the catacombs?” they suggest.

The Innkeeper at the Adventurer’s Repose can arrange for horses and a wagon for a fee, and can also point you to a shipping agent at the docks in South Harbour, a days ride south of the city.

Urist’s inquiries about surviving adventurers from Azodall’s time are met with a shrug. ”Adventuring groups come and go in this town, and any still alive would long be retired. These are not records we would keep.”

Makis is reminded that a trip to the Scar has been ruled out. It is unlikely that any evidence of events from over a century ago would remain in that squalid place, and inquiries into the operations of criminal enterprises would not be met with open arms. The witch offers that his pseudodragon can scout ahead and he will not require a horse. His broom will suffice.

The little gnome puts his hands on his hips as he responds to the advice of the Star Mages - he's a bit vexed. "Well of course I could go to the Catacombs and buy a scroll. I just thought that since we were working with you guys, and brought news of the sad demise of one of your members, and killed the master mind of that murder, and then actually apprehended one of the miscreants involved in that death right outside your front door, that you might let me copy one first level spell that costs you nothing. Clearly, I was wrong." The gnome will angrily stomp his way out of the Star Mage's tower.

Snark will later check with his friends. "Evidently, the Stingy Mages won't let me copy one first level spell. Do any of you guys have the spell Floating Disk? Also, feel free to copy any of the spells I have." This probably only matters to Beatrix and Urist, but they are welcome to any spells he currently has. And if no one has it, he will go buy one from the Catacombs.

As for travel plans, he's otherwise ready to go.

Beatrix will ensure they have all the supplies the party needs for the several day trip and some extra in case of emergencies. She's also more then happy to carry it all with her absurd weight capacity. "If we're avoiding the Culverwood we can head along the coast and maybe take stops in Windhorn Hamlet and Angel Springs on the way. That way we should be able to avoid even the edge of it. At least I think, this map isn't very detailed." She'll try to get a better idea of the terrain and roads so they can best plan out their trip before they leave.
