The Trap - DM BrianZ Thursday March 28th, 2024 7:51:01 AM
Naithi sets up a route, in the Outcast Quarter. Carrying a bag which appears to be food, lets her keep weapons(or other item of choice) at the ready.
Zarsellet suggests some play-acting, but wandering around may be sufficient.
Unless....Lothlo is correct and the killer is paying attention to the response of the authorities. He suggests checking with any leatherworking shops that may be in the City as a possible avenue of investigation.
Fingers likes the plan, and can help everyone to pick good hiding spots. (gives everyone a +4 on the next stealth check you make)
Rhys agrees with finding good hiding spots.
Paige suggests warning the beastfolk about the planned trap which is easy to do as you will be nearby. At the Crypt, Paige is able to play a few games and get something to eat. The night's entertainment is light, a few monks demonstrating breaking boards and thin blocks of ice. Zolbur is willing to meet and is happy to see you. As for the questions....He doesn't know too much. I'm very aware. Business has been awful since it started. I have my bouncers patrol nearby streets when patrons are coming and going, but they can't be everywhere. Fortunately, they haven't run into anything yet. I know personally how competent your team is, and I have no doubt you will get to the bottom of this. I'm available if you need anything, just let me know.
As Paige arrives at the Outcast Quarter, the 'trap' has been doing a slow circuit around a few streets for about two hours. The streets seem to be completely empty. Approaching the area where the beastfolk dwell, Paige turns a corner, and 30 feet feet away from her is a tall(about 6 foot) man. He is acting oddly, and appears to be sniffing the air. When he sees Paige he stops and a nasty spiked chain drops out of one of his unusually long coat sleeves.
At the same time, Naithi notices she has picked up a follower. Glancing back, you see a man following you at a distance of 30 feet. His hands seem to be unusually large...
OOC- we are in combat rounds! I will send a map with the next post as I need everyone's position. Paige and Naithi are 3 rounds of full movement apart from each other. All other PCs are within 1-3 rounds of movement from either one of them. (please roll the D3! and decide which you are moving towards.) If anyone would be willing to sub post, Kwarsk can join in.

Kwarsk (BobW for Wayne) d3=3 ; Thursday March 28th, 2024 9:21:02 AM
The sturdy dwarf has been keeping watch on Naithi as she wanders the Outcast Quarter. He anxiously awaits her impending return past his hiding position. She has wandered further this time and he has yet to reconcile how she can protect herself despite her diminuitive stature.

Burton is a full move away from either Paige or Naithi (I will confirm once I see the map). He is tucked into the shadows of a doorway wrapped in his cloak. He has decided not to go inside this time following the embarrassing nap last time.
Lothlo (WillD) -- AC: 20/15/16, HP: 51/51, CMD: 21 () d3=1 ; Thursday March 28th, 2024 5:38:57 PM
Lothlo is one full move away, having chosen a location that would have given him the best opportunity to get into line of sight to protect his team mates. If both sides have similar lines of sight Lothlo would tend to stay closer to Naithi as he knows her fighting style and how best to assist her.

Paige ducks back and casts a spell to protect herself.
Naithi does the same, the casting will last into the next round.
For everyone else, your D3 roll determines how far away you are. There are numerous areas that you can hide in between buildings. Multiply the D3 by 30, that is how many feet you are away from either Naithi or Paige. Indicate your movement for last round, and then take your actions. The map will be open to edit. You may place your token, or give coordinates in post and I will add.
The creatures are seen to be moving towards their intended targets........

Burton is located at J2. I'm not sure if he currently knows if Paige has a problem:
If he does he will move to H1 so he can catch her eye while being out of sight of chain guy. His new wand is in his left hand as is a dagger (he's just holding them both when he needs them he will take one into his right hand, his right hand is currently empty.).
If he doesn't he will remain at J2 on alert.

Paige takes a step into the alley to face the creature coming in her direction. She channels through her holy symbol once again, targeting whatever it is (Knowledge 9 (+4 for Arcana, History, +6 Religion) with her spell Hold Person Will vs 15). The cleric doesn’t stick around to see if the thing freezes in place (for 5 rounds), but rather ducks back around the corner.

Naithi's eyes narrow as she senses the impending danger. She quickly reached into the depths of her being, drawing forth the arcane energy that pulsed within her. With a flick of her wrist, she summoned a small flaming sphere, feeling the familiar warmth spread through her body as it formed in her hand.
As the flaming sphere grows larger, she focused her thoughts, shaping it into a form she can manipulate and control. Where the elemental was like summoning a child with a mind of it's own from another plane, this is more like casting forth a marionette, a ball she can control and move as she wills, and with a flick of her wrist a soft whoosh of air and a shower of sparks that illuminated the dark alleyway as it's cast forward.
At the same time, Camalayaas senses her rider's urgency and began to bound away from the approaching figure. Naithi had to act fast. She leaped onto the moving rabbit's back, her balance precarious as she struggled to maintain her concentration on the fireball.
The muscles in her arms strain as she holds onto Camalayaas' fur, willing herself not to fall off. The elemental fireball momentarily, but she manages to steady it with a deep breath and a silent prayer to the fey spirits that guide her.
Finally settled, she directs the fiery creature to stand its ground between them and the looming shadow. It roared to life, crackling with energy as it faced the threat head-on.
With Camalayaas safely beneath her, Naithi is prepared for combat, her heart racing with anticipation. This would not be easy, but she would not back down without a fight.

I didn't place the Flaming Sphere on the map. My plan is to have it in the air, above our heads and to the west of us, closer to the enemy. If the enemy attacks Naithi will move it into the enemies square.
Casting this spell is a standard action. Fast mounting Camalayaas is a free action. Moving the sphere is a move action. So she can cast the spell and then holds the movement of the sphere until she sees how the enemy responds... Incase he isn't really an enemy.

Burton senses something is up and moves closer to Paige. Seeing the creature with the spiked chain, he fires off a scorching ray, and singes the creature.
Paige looks around the corner, aims a spell and then ducks back. She isn't sure yet what the creature is, except that it is not human. (hold person fails)
Rhys takes advantage of his speed and agility to get close. At this range, you can tell the creature is not human underneath the long coat. The creature stands about 6 feet tall and (in its true form) appears as a skinless humanoid. Its natural body appears to be bone wrapped tightly with corded muscle and covered with a dark red-purplish slime. Its eye sockets are deep and contain large bulbous eyes with blue irises. The creature's long, lanky arms end in claws as do its thick, muscled legs. It carries two large chains covered with many sharpened barbs. It turns at Rhys' approach and remains where it is, looking as if it is concentrating on something.
Kwarsk moves to intercept the creature near Naithi, and readies shield to defend.
Fingers moves as close as he can to the action, squeezing into a small alley between houses to get closer to Rhys.
Lothlo sees the creature is hostile(DM ruling) and steps out of the shadows and fires twice, hitting both times.
Naithi proves she is no easy prey. She calls Camalayaas, and acrobatically hops on. After completing a summoning spell, she also drops a flaming sphere, ready to act. When the creature starts moving she wills the sphere to attack it,(readied action) but it stops at the side of the building as the creature climbs right up the side of it.
Zarsellet moves up and begins inspiring the team with a bardsong(Zarsellet, Kwarsk, Lothlo, Naithi, Camalayaas, small elemental all in range)
The creature continues running and climbing along the wall, supernaturally quick. It leaps across to the building next to you, and then climbs within reach to strike out. A pair of tentacles shoot out, and try to strike both Kwarsk and Naithi. Naithi takes 7 damage, the creature attempts to grapple her with the hit but is unable to lock the hold(rolled CMB 14)The creature fails to find a good spot and does not harm Kwarsk. This hunched-over wretch is swaddled with random pieces of clothing. A long pliable arm gropes out from within a sleeve, revealing tentacles capped with five wide, spiny claws.

Camalayas does successfully initiate a grapple with the creature clinging to the wall. They are both considered to be grappled(condition) for purpose of DCs and targeting. The creature missed the AoO for Camalayas attempting the grapple.

OOC: Naithi. Are you adding the +4 to hit (+2 Heroism and +2 Inspire Courage) and +2 to damage from Zarsellet? +2+2 for Camalayas.
Seeing the creature fighting from the rooftops Zarsellet decides to make it less stable. He maintains the bard performance, then sings out the words for a spell targeting the roof that the creature is on.

Naith spits at the creature. Bears aren't afraid of slugs. There will be no more victims after tonight!.
As Naithi says this she helps Camalayaas grapple he monster before them...aberations always taste so awful! Why couldn't this be something more flavorful...not that it mattered. The monster sounded intelligent enough that the group would probably keep her from trying to eat it any way.
With the monster now grappled and thoroughly flanked Camalayaas shows the enemy the true power of a Wild Sibling working with a Lost Child. With Naith's help (aid another for the grapple and a hero point spent before the roll) the two begin to tie up the grappled creature.
Actions ----------- Naith - Aid Another Grapple to hep Camalayaas = 15 Success
Fire Elemental move as close as it can to help grapple, it can't reach and would not have succeeded anyway
Camalayaas Grapple check to tie the creature up (+10 added to grapple DC needed because the pin step is being skipped per the grapple rules) = 30 (most likely a success because a 21 was a success before the creature was grappled, but an additional aid another from the group or other boost might be useful. Yes, Camalayaas and Naithi applied their bonuses)

Rhys hits the creature in front of him, and encourages the team to not let up.
Kwarsk throws a javelin, but missed.
Paige's spiritual weapon hits the creature, and then she moves in and follows up with a solid strike of her own.
Lothlo continues firing, but this time the shots are wide.
Zarsellet continues to inspire and tries to make clinging to the wall more difficult for the creature. The creature manages to hang on for the moment. (please list DC in post for saving throws)
Burton uses the wand again, striking the creature, then switches weapons.
Fingers adds an attack to the mix, but missed.(grease spell is not used as requested)
Naithi adds to Camalayaas' effort and tries to pin the creature. The effort is good, but not quite enough. Both Naithi and Camalayaas are now grappled with the creature. (DC for this would have been 31) (Also, Naithi has taken 2 rounds of damage from the creature, please adjust hp to reflect)
............................ The creature grappling with Naithi and Camalayaas decides to stop trying to hold onto the grease covered wall/roof. It drops down onto the two of them and continues to grapple and choke them. (Creature is now in reach of all on the ground) Naithi takes 5 damage, Camalayaas takes 7 damage
The other one in front of Rhys howls in pain and then goes into a rage, swinging the barbed chain wildly at the elf. Hit AC 30, Rhys takes 11 damage from the vicious weapon.
OOC- on the map I did not adjust the location for creature 'C' due to program limitations, but it is now within reach of those on the ground.

Naithi is surprised when the creature takes control of the grapple from Camalayaas. In return Naithi takes control of the grapple for her and Camalayas (Naithi beats it's grapple check even with a -5 penalty). Once her and Camalayas have control Camalayaas takes control of the grapple (grapple check= 22)
Naithi Grape check to take control of the grapple Camalayaas = 27 Let's Camalayas take control of the Grapple as she lets go
Camalayas takes control of the grapple (grapple check= 29) Rake attack 1 Hit AC 22 for 3 dmg. Rake Attack 2 Hit AC 25 for 4 dmg
ooc: I'm confused. If the creature able to grapple both Naithi and Camalayas at the same time, it is this because Naithi used aid another to help Camalayaas? I regained control of the grapple, so this is just for my curiosity. No need to change anything.
If for some reason Naithi is not allowed to take control of the grapple (I've never dealt with an enemy grappling two opponents at once, Naithi will instead bite the enemy for 11 dmg.

Burton casts ray of enfeeblement on the chain wielding creature. The ray hits, though Burton feels that it does not have the full effect. (rolled 4, creature takes 2 STR damage)
Rhys is focused on his opponent and lands a critical hit! The creature staggers under the tremendous blow, and indeed, drops to the ground grasping at the major wound it just received.
Kwarsk takes advantage of the new range and lands a hit on the grappled creature.
Zarsellet throws a well-placed dagger that sinks into the creatures' hide as it howls it pain at yet another hit. (creature is grappled, no obstacle in place). The bard continues to inspire the team.
As the creature drops, both Paige and her magic summoned weapon miss the blows aimed at where it was.
Lothlo fires again, taking careful aim. (no obstruction, just firing into melee). One of the arrows strikes true, injuring the creature yet again.
Muuru moves up as the creature drops, and readies a gore in case it twitches.
Naithi and Camalayaas continue to grapple with the seriously injured creature. Camalayaas takes the lead and rakes with its' claws.
.......................... The creature at D9 is down and not moving. You believe it has succumbed to its' wounds
The other one, seriously injured, surrounded, and caught in a grapple has a bit of a panicked look in its' eyes as it looks around for an escape. It manages to break the grapple( CMB roll 27) and tries to run. The heroes who are near may make AoO as it tries to run away. (I placed the creature at O24, it has more movement than this but we will see if it survives to make it to the next roof.)

There is not much to find on them, the skin stitcher has a spiked chain. It is also carrying a pouch with some carefully cut pieces of freshly harvested skin, precisely cut from a body. Lothlo considers Burton's question. I've never heard of creatures like this stalking victims inside a city, finding the two of them together doesn't seem like coincidence. And since the victims were choked and had the skin removed, they do seem to be connected.
As for which authorities, my assumption is that the guards have more secure cells to keep this creature locked up, so they are probably the better bet.

Rhys arrives with Fingers and the now dead skin stitcher. Looking down on the trussed up choker he nudges it with his foot. ”So where is your lair? Where do you hide from the light of the sun?”
The elf turns to his companions, ”If this thing is in league with our bundle of flesh there will be signs of it at their lair. Perhaps we can backtrack its path.” Rhys starts hunting for any tracks the creature may have left (Survival 13).

Paige looks at Kwarsk in astonishment and asks ”you know about these…these…aberrations? What is the normal habitat of these creatures, and does it make sense that they have come to the City? I wonder if someone brought them in…or perhaps they are a product of the Scar?”
Kwarsk (Wayne) AC 26/T 14/FF 23, HP 54/54, CMD 21/25 vs. Bull Rush & Trip. Monday April 8th, 2024 9:50:55 PM
Kwarsk replies to Paige, "Paige, in the Scab, let's say that these things are just not-rare enough that they make it into dwarven training... both can be found underground, and the stitcher anywhere one can walk, but the choker... so very very odd to see it in a city instead of a cave... unheard of, really."
Kwarsk turns to Rhys, "I agree, but of all of us, I think our new friend Naithi might be most skilled at tracking... no offense.
Naithi?
Kwarsk ponders Paige's question, who could control such creatures, or arrange them to team up, but finding no answer in his own mind just yet, he says nothing.

Naithi let's the others question the aberration and decide what to do with it, in no small part because she doesn't know the cities laws or law men well enough. These city streets make tracking difficult, but I think I can manage it, especially with Camalayaas and Fizzgig's (her pet guard dog's) help. Lucky those things left a clear enough tail for me to follow, otherwise it would have been a difficult task this late at night on the hard roads. If I lose the trail Camalayaas and Fizzgig's noses should be able to pick up the scent...and thank you for trusting in me and protecting me in that fight. They put up more of a fight than I expected.
Naithi: Survival to track, take 20 = 33, if not allowed = 30. DC 20 for hard ground. If a moonless night dc = 26. I should still be able to track after 4-7 hours of rain.
Camalayaas: Scent = take 20 = 27, 11 if not allowed. A fresh trail requires DC 10, less if the corpse stitcher smells.

Burton wonders why they were working together. As for authorities, the Guard would likely be the best spot.
Zarsellet checks the grisly 'treasure' found on the skin stitcher. These pieces look fresh. You would guess this lot came from an animal, not a person.
Lothlo wonders why it was found in the City. Perhaps some research would be useful to find out.
Rhys is ready to question the choker. While waiting for it to wake up, he looks around for tracks.
Paige is also curious about the connection.
Kwarsk admits to some knowledge of such creatures.
Fingers wonders about the body. The Black Cathedral is concerned with those who are part of society and does not usually deal with creatures considered by most to be monsters. The Guard would likely be better.
Naithi checks them one more time(the only treasure is the spiked chain, other items have no real value) and then sets about with her animal companions to search for tracks and scent. It takes a few minutes, but they do pick something up and have a direction to start following.
There are still a few hours until the sun comes up. Would you like to question the choker? Follow the tracks? Report to the Guard? Or do something else? The heroes have the initiative.....

The choker just smiles, content for now to be lead along by the ropes it is tied up with. He doesn't offer much, except to not disagree when asked if the tracking is leading the team in the right direction.
Within an hour, you come across a guard patrol. There are six guards in total, and it appears the information about increased strength patrols was not an an exaggeration. They are surprised and also relieved that you have killed and captured those responsible for the murders. They are less happy about escorting the choker prisoner to the nearest guards post with jail facilities, but still agree to do so. We will get word to the Captain on your progress. (They will take the body as well, placing it on one of their own horses.)
You continue to follow the trail until you approach the Guild Quarter where the trail runs cold. There is no further sign of where exactly in the Quarter their lair is. It is nearly sunrise.

Lothlo suggests it may be time to get some rest.
Rhys looks around for tanning and leatherworking shops. There are a lot of shops here, it will take a bit to scout them all out.
Burton wonders about the lair, and if some more research may be in order.
Zarsellet agrees with resting, research, and the possible location of the lair.
Fingers agrees with some rest, and considers some questions worth asking later on.
Naithi tries to pick up the trail, and she is both skilled and thorough. But they must have done something to cover their tracks and scent before getting to the edge of the Quarter.
Paige suggests checking in with the beastfolk.
OOC- Paige's question requires some digging through notes :)
So it seems a few options are open. Do you: get some rest? check in with the beastfolk? take a good look around the Guild Quarter looking for appropriate shops? look into some research?
The heroes find day breaking and the very early shops opening(and smells of baking in the air) A few people start getting about their business, but it will be another hour before the full hustle of City life is in full swing.

Naithi shakes her head at Lothlo's question. Neither Camalayaas or Fizzgig can can communicate effectively enough to relay they information. Besides, if these guys are smart enough to do something like that, then they are probably smart enough not to use anything obvious. You might have better luck checking for a lingering magic aura from a summoning, teleportation or disguise spell. Either they live in this area, the suddenly appeared in this area, or the dropped their disguise in this area. I don't know much about aberrations, but I can't understand why they would walk around while revealing their true nature while hunting. If they were summoned or their magical disguise wore off, maybe detect magic can can pick something up, I'm going to focus on the latter.
Kwarsk said these things can be found under ground, so I'm going to quick check the area for sewer entrances and the like.
