DM Bob & Carla ”A Well Trodden Road” Tuesday April 2nd, 2024 10:29:42 PM Snark is vexed by the bluntness of the Star Mages Guild when it comes to sharing spells. For any who know of the Guild’s reputation they would be surprised that the refusal was not served with a side-order of condescension, for although he was granted access to their records, the sharing of magic is an entirely different matter.
Despite the gnome’s grumbling, he along with the others are prepared to head out to Hovel.Beatrix has already secured provisions for the trip and Makis confirms that he will provide for clean water along the way. Isaac, Eadric, Benni and Jasper settle on the safest route, following the coastal road through Windhorn Hamlet and Angel Springs.
The Luck Makers head north out of Plateau City via the Quest Gate.. The road is cobbled at first but soon becomes a dirt road wide enough for 2 wagons to pass. It takes the better part of the day to get off the Plateau itself and the adventurers are treated to one of the magical lifts that transport travellers up and down the steep cliffs. It is here at the base of the plateau that they meet a small caravan of wagons pulled by oxen headed north and are welcomed to join if they are willing to provide additional security along the way. Thom Bramblefoot, a rugged looking halfling, leads the caravan and advises that ”Safety is found in numbers. We’ll be putting in for the night at the campgrounds by Windhorn Hamlet and then pushing on towards Angel Springs in the morning. It’s a long trek so we’ll have to set camp somewhere halfway to the Springs. The wagons are mostly loaded with empty barrels being returned, but there’s some room for those tired of walking.”

Onesimos enjoys walking and seeing the plateaus of New Elenna and the magical lifts going up and down each one. The banter of the Luck Makers makes time fly by, and he joins in companionably.
Upon meeting Thom Bramblefoot, the elf nods, and looking around to make sure the others agree first, accepts going at the pace of the caravan. "Too right, Master Bramblefoot. Many dangers wouldn't care to try a larger group."
Benni doesn't like casting spells willy-nilly, but does go around to help the caravanners as he can, ensuing their foodstuffs are purified, and seeing to other physical or spiritual needs of their temporary community.

He is happy to take a small, gnome-sized place in a wagon with Makis. "Why didn't I join the Star Mages? Well, it didn't really occur to me. I joined the WLA like my dad. Turns out the Star Mages are a bunch of jerks, so I figure I made the right decision."

The Luck Makers accept Thom Bramblefoot’s invitation to travel with his caravan. The halfling leader of the wagon train explains that twice each year they bring full barrels of wine from the vineyards near Humble’s Ford to Plateau City and return with the empty barrels from the previous season.“Our wines are well liked in Plateau City. Good soils and long growing seasons result in high quality fruits that go into every vat, barrel, cask and bottle”. He is clearly proud of the wines from Crescent Valley and the role he plays in seeing them to market.
Snark and Makis make themselves comfortable in one of the wagons and talk shop while the gnome copies a spell from Urist’s spell book. The witch sends his pseudo-dragon ahead with Beatrix to scout for trouble
The first day’s travel is uneventful. Benni, Isaac and Eadric help where they can. Besides a broken wagon wheel which is quickly repaired, there is little to do other than enjoy the scenery.
The sun begins to set as they lumber in to the campground outside Windhorn Hamlet. Halflings from the different wagons quickly assemble a makeshift kitchen, a fire is started and potato and leek stew is soon simmering atop the coals. Clearly the wagoners have done this many times before.

As our new travelling companions are setting up camp, Snark will wander around to check on things, puffing on his pipe as he goes. He'll use Prestidigitation to entertain folks with small magic tricks - though nothing that would scare any of the animals. He'll create an Unseen Servant to help with mundane tasks, like clean-up after dinner. Like Jasper, he will use Mending to fix obvious problems she cannot get to - a torn piece of canvas here or a worn/broken timber on a wagon there.
Eventually as we get ready to bed down, Snark will cast Tiny Hut to create a warm hemisphere (opaque from the outside but transparent from the inside) for the Luck Makers to sleep in if they wish. He will cast an Extended Mage Armor on himself before he goes to bed, and will cast Floating Disk to create a place to sleep out of the dirt here. He asks Luna keep watch atop a nearby wagon and wake him if there is trouble.
"OOH, you have Minor Creation. I'm a bit of an artisan, you know. If we ever need to make a door or a wall or a ram or a ballista, I could do that."
Urist needs a DC19 Spellcraft check to conprehend the spell. She rolls a 31!
But it will cost 160 gp to put it in her book. "Um, does anybody have any extra coin I can borrow?" she asks around the party.

He praises his familiar for his efforts scouting and at dinner goes to sit with the caravaners and listen to their tales. When it's time to bed down he enters the hut saying Nice spell.. And when he sees Snark cast his mage armor he offer the small wizard his pearl of power noting I am more likely to need mage armor during a night ambush than any daytime attack while everyone is awake and I an in a wagon.

The process of setting up camp and preparing the evening meal is made easier by all the willing hands pitching in to help. Snark wanders about the caravan, a waft of pipe smoke trailing behind him as he goes. The gnome casts a variety of spells to ease the burdens of others. Jasper and Benni likewise make themselves useful, mending items and treating minor ailments of the wagoners. Isaac’s help with unloading the wagons is much appreciated as are his tales, for what halfling doesn’t enjoy a good story!?
Beatrix is lost in appreciation of the day and the company around her. Gone are any worries she may have entertained about her conflicting roles of teacher and adventurer, replaced by the peacefulness of the day. Snark and Urist share spellbooks and with some assistance from Jasper both are successful at copying a new spell into their own books.
As the evening winds down, Snark casts his Tiny Hut spell for those who wish the shelter, and then casts Mage Armour on himself and then onto Makis using the magical pearl.
There is but a slight breeze and a sky full of stars for those who wish to sleep under them. Thom and his people have established watches for the night and welcome the addition of Luna and any others who wish.
The night passes peacefully, without interruption. Early morning arrives to the sounds of wagons being readied for travel and oxen being yoked and hitched. Thom Bramblefoot lets the Luck Makers know that the next stop will be somewhere before Angel Springs and without the amenities of an established campground. ”The road from here gets wilder and more dangerous. Bandits are not uncommon, but with our combined numbers they are likely to let us pass unimpeded and save their energy for easier targets.”

As he settles in, he says to his friends, "Ol' Bramblefoot figures our numbers protect us from bandits. That may be true. It may also mean that if we are attacked, it's not just a bunch of simple bandits, so let's stay sharp."

The morning’s travel proceeds without interruption. Isaac reassures the wagoners that the LuckMakers are experienced and there should be nothing to worry about. Thom Bramblefoot scans the horizon and sees the pseudo dragon aloft as well as Beatrix and Jasper leading the way. Snark too maintains a careful watch as Makis an Urist discuss the search for the artifact and the possibilities of failure.
The first portent of danger is the charred remains of a burnt out wagon shoved off the side of the track. Weeds and vines have already begun to return it to the earth. Thom assures them that it has been there quite some time. Later that afternoon a pair of riders approach from behind. Armed and haggard looking they pass by with not even a ‘fare thee well’, only the scowls of road hardened men. They seem to move faster upon catching sight of the well armoured paladin at the front of the caravan.
As night approaches, the caravan stops and once again the well organized wagoners efficiently set up a makeshift camp for the evening. As supper is being prepared, Thom explains to Snark and Benni that ”tomorrow we will reach Angel Springs and our destination to the west near Humbles Ford but we haven’t spoken of your destination. Where are you headed? If you are continuing westward you are welcome to stay overnight at the vineyards. We can put a roof over your head and a proper meal in your bellies!”
Thom and his people establish watches and maintain a fire throughout the night.

Jasper misliked those riders. She's a nocturnal sort, so she takes third watch in the deep of night, following Beatrix and Eadric. She knows that Thom's people are watching, too, but a little extra vigilance won't hurt. (Perception = 36)
She keeps her sling at the ready and relies on her low-light vision during her shift.
As she patrols, she thinks on what she saw earlier in the day: What was the condition of the riders' arms? Were they wearing interesting garb or any recogniable blazons? Did their mounts look fresh, or did they have the look of a hard ride at speed (away from some danger? Or from local authorities)? What was it about Isaac that made them pick up their pace?
Her musing shifts to the day ahead. She's somewhat familar with this area (Know = 11), so she thinks back on the geography and terrian, puzzling over high ground, escarpments, streams, copses and glens-- anywhere a wagon train could be caught unaware or at a disadvantage.

Benni is grateful for Thom’s offer of lodging at the Vineyards and informs the wagon master their destination is indeed Crescent Valley without letting any more of the cat out of the bag.
The druid recalls the riders from the previous day; road hardened men wearing well used leather armour on hard-ridden horses. She can even remember the smell, a pungent mixture of horse sweat and the odor of men who have not washed for too long. They had given the caravan a good once over before riding on. Perhaps the sight of a heavily-armed paladin was enough to dissuade them from any further ambitions.
The night passes quietly. Jasper can see the faint flickering light of a campfire some great distance ahead as can Tinkerbell, but there are no signs of movement nearby and only an inquisitive lone fox skirting the camp draws their attention.
The next day is overcast and light rain begins to fall, pushed by a light breeze coming from Dragon Bay to the east. While there are no more burnt out wagons, a number of roadside markers and makeshift shrines tell the tale of lives lost along the route. Thom points out two in particular, noting that he had lost a close friend and his son to raiders when their wagons had been attacked and looted while heading south. ”You can’t be too careful on these roads. There’s always those seeking to take your gold, and your life if necessary.”. Several miles south of Angel Springs, the road seeps to the west and the wagon train follows. ”This here is the ‘Road of Troubles’ or as some call it, the ‘Chaos Road’. To the north is the Scab, to the south are the Red Hills, and to the west the Culverwood. In between is the Crescent Valley where we make our home. We should be there by early evening.” the wagon master sounds relieved at the prospect of getting home.

Tired of the wagon's bumps and concerned with cramping of his legs from little use, Makis walks much of the day, talking with the hailing's and enjoying the exercise. He sends Ellashee out, but not as far and the small dragon spends half her day riding on Makis' shoulder. Towards the end of the day Makis comments to no on in particular It seems our numbers may well have helped discourage the local bandits.

DM Bob and Carla - ”Heading to Hovel” Wednesday April 10th, 2024 12:03:00 AM Isaac, Snark and Benni volunteer that they are looking for an old wizard’s tower - possibly ruins in the vicinity of Hovel. They ask the caravan leader if he knows of such a place, as well as what kind of reception the adventuring party might receive from folks living in or around the valley.
”Nothing’s ever easy in the Scab, but there’s dwarves as got some steadings to the west, and there’s some giant kind…and lots of monsters! Travel is difficult as well as dangerous - but not impossible. Can’t say that there’s been any trouble come from the Scab recently, unless you count a group of rowdy dwarves on a bender tearing up Grog’s Tavern in the Hamlet.” he rubs the back of his head in thought before continuing ”can’t say if there’s any towers nor ruins in Hovel, but who knows what’s in the Red Hills or hidden in the Culverwood. Mayhap someone in Hovel can be of better assistance to you.” The halfling makes a face at the mention of Patty’s Place. ”It’s a small inn in the centre of town. Rooms are clean, the food is edible and the ale passable - but nothing to write home about.”
Makis decides to stretch his legs and easily keeps pace with the ox drawn wagons. Urist strums a melody to raise spirits, however the grim reminders of lives lost on the Road of Troubles only serves to unnerve Jasper and to heighten Beatrix’s awareness of her environment. The centaur doesn’t see anything to rouse concern, and as evening approaches is the first to spot a sign for Sleepy Vines Vinyards.
The party accept the hospitality of the halflings, and are shown a place where they can set up camp. The halflings tend to the off-loading of the empty barrels and some parcels brought up from Plateau City. The keen eyed spot Thom spring a mechanism on a large barrel, and supervise two muscular fellows carry off a heavy chest that had been hidden inside. The vineyard’s business in the City must have been profitable!
The Luck Makers are invited to join a celebratory feast with the workers. Folks are friendly and the atmosphere is relaxed, though merrymaking winds up early, since the next day is a work day. The vineyard does post a guard including fellows who patrol the low stone walls that surround the compound.

The following morning, as the adventuring group prepare to depart for Hovel, Thom gifts the party with a case (12 bottles) of wine and profuse thanks for their escort of the past several days. He confirms Humbles Ford is about an hour down the road (the party might stop there for second breakfast) or they could push on and reach Hovel by lunch time.

As we encounter Humble's Ford, Snark will ask about the road ahead to Hovel. But it sounds like we don't want to actually stop in Humble's Ford, so we'll then press on to Hovel with our information about the road ahead.

Individual bottles from the case are passed to those able to transport them, though Urist opens one and pours our a small libation for each of the Luck Makers and Thom. After a toast to friends, the troubadour collects her mugs, storing them in her capacious bag.
Eadric is relieved to part ways from the caravan, possibly thinking the group will have a lower profile. However, as the party make their way through the town of Humbles Ford the presence of so many ‘big’uns’ does draw a bit of side-eye from any halflings not at their breakfasts!
Isaac wonders if the group will stop, but Makis and Snark keep enquiries brief. They learn that the road to Hovel should be safe during daylight hours. Giants haven’t troubled the valley in an age (due to a combination of treaties and fortifications along the southern edge of the Scab. )Just beyond the town the land is under cultivation or pasturelands - the farms alternating with stands of woods. Things get hillier closer to Hovel. There have been some reports of ogre sightings on the other side of Hovel, but not on the road between the two towns.
Benni doesn’t get any clarity regarding the provenance of the name ‘Hovel’, but is assured the village is anything but squalid or unpleasant! In fact it is a historic place where the first halfling families made their homes when they came to the valley. Some of the burrow homes being over two centuries old!
An anxious Beatrix leads the group on, with Makis’ pseudo dragon performing aerial reconnaissance and Jasper keeping a sharp eye on the woods.
As the sun reaches its zenith the Luck Makers reach the town - really, more a sleepy little village. The Chaos Road takes the group right through the center of town, and into a small commercial area. Eadric and Makis recognize the name of the general mercantile as the same mentioned in the financial records they studied back at the Star Mage’s Guild. A little farther down, another sign declares the whitewashed stone building with moss covered thatched roof as Patty’s Place.

Upon arrival at the town she'll look about it with interest. The temptation to talk to the locals about their education program and get some tips or start an impromptu lesson is strong but she shoves it down to focus on the task at hand. "So where do we start?"

Makis concurs with the druid’s plan Eadric follows those heading for the mercantile Snark decides to check out Patty’s Place Benni looks for a temple of worship Urist accompanies the blue haired gnome (literally, and figuratively)
Makis and Eadric haven’t been with the group for long, but understand the Luck Makers have been tasked with finding a magical relic created by a wizard named Tyron Azodall and bringing it back to the Gateway Downs where it can be used to deactivate a series of faulty portals deep beneath the haunted Abbey near Heranmar. The party’s investigations at the Star Mage’s Tower confirm that Azodall disappeared under mysterious circumstances. From an earlier account documented in a monk’s journal retrieved from the haunted Abbey, it’s believed the relic’s creator lived a reclusive existence in a tower, fearful of retribution for some misdeed (or misdeeds.) Clues from the wizard’s personal archive point to Hovel and environs.
Though hesitant to take the lead, the party’s newest members share key information recalled from their joint investigation of the mage’s financial records: payments were made to the mercantile in Hovel by someone named Dallry Torazo, for general supplies, locks, oil, food, etc. and there was an entry for purchase of land described only by local co-ordinates, but located somewhere near the Red Hills
At the general mercantile…
The door of the rural store squeaks in protest when it is pushed open. Inside the space is packed tightly with boxes and barrels along the walls, a counter runs across the far side of the room, its glass front and top revealing a selection of comestibles and curiosities available for purchase. Behind the counter, shelves to the ceiling filled with boxes, baskets, and other sundry goods. A young halfling perched halfway up a ladder turns at the party’s entrance - then clambers down quickly asking breathlessly: ”how may I help you?”
At Patty’s Place…
Snark and Urist enter the inn. The inside is quite rustic looking, with visible wood timber framing, within whitewashed stone walls. There’s a great sooty stain over the mantle and partway up the exterior of the chimney - evidence of a fireplace in long use. A somewhat burly middle aged* female halfling bustles out from behind the bar that juts out into the common room, a rag in one hand and a mug in the other. ”Patty Stillwater, proprietor of this inn. Yes, we can accommodate big’uns, and little’uns too at ‘Patty’s Place’. Up to 10 folks. Five rooms. Two beds each. 5 silver each, or 1 gold and you get dinner and a mug of beer or glass of wine, too. Space for horses in the stables, and wagons in the yard.” Patty finishes wiping the mug, and sets it on the counter. The halfling pocket’s Snark’s gold piece. ”A tower you say? Inhabited by a wizard? Not in Hovel that I know of. Long time ago? How long are we talking about?”.

What my friends are trying to say is that we have come a long way both to spend coin with you in your fine shop and to ask for your help in tracking down transactions that have happened in your parents or even grand parents time. We are looking for a man that acquired land about 150 years ago in these parts, or at least somewhere near the Red Hills Makis will describe the local coordinates to the shopkeeper. It is quite important that we find what we expect to be a tower built on this land. I assure you that we will make any information you can share with your efforts with purchases and even direct payment if required.

”Hovel is home to the oldest families in the valley, so someone might know about goings on more than a century ago, though I don’t. Doubt m’gaffer knows either…though Frea’s pa might know. M’gaffer says old Ivar worked at the store back in the day, and he’s as old as the hills! Tilting his head to one side, he continues:”Sounds like it might be south of the village in the Red Hills, though I don’t go exploring much myself.” The fellow shivers. ”The Culverwood is always changing so you never know where you are, and there’s ogre’s and other monsters in the Hills.”. Removing a box from the glass fronted cabinet, the halfling sets it on the counter, inviting the visitors to help themselves to a golden coloured treat. ”Barley candy! he volunteers, before selecting one and tucking it into his cheek.
The small village doesn’t appear to have a library, but Isaac does locate a signpost with half a dozen boards pointed in various directions. West is the Culverwood, North is the Scab an old smudged sign La—-‘s Lens points in a North easterly direction, directly east is Angel’s Springs from whence they came. A weathered grey board labelled Glimmer Stones sits crookedly, but surely points south-east. South is the Red Hills and directly below it a recently retouched sign also pointing due south indicates some place called Bryson’s Rest.
Benni doesn’t find a temple, but he does locate a grotto on the edge of town that seems to serve a similar purpose. There are some roughly formed effigies that are hard to identify, though the cleric can make out the sign of the sickle carved onto the stone in one place. There are offerings of nuts, fruits, and flowers on ledges and tucked into nooks and crannies in the dark cool space.
”150 years ago?” Patty repeats Urist. ”Yup! A dwarf might remember. Reckon you should talk to old Ivar Horntoe. He’s a dwarf. Been here forever!” looking hopefully at the dwarf and the blue haired gnome, the sturdy halfling asks: ”so you’ll be staying the night?”

Urist steps out, looking hither and yon for this "Ivar Horntoe" fellow. "He wasn't at the tavern, so the first place to look is out." Then she looks for the local smithy, and failing that, the mason's shop.

And it sounds like we need a word with this Mr. Ivar if that can be arranged.

Whatever Jasper has, might be catching! The young clerk suddenly turns up shy, stuttering over his words: ”1 silver for 10 in a leather bag…5lbs…sling bullets, not spuds. Those we got. White ones and orange ones…spuds, not bullets. Folks ‘round here use acorns and Conkers - that’s chestnuts…for bullets, not mash.” Flushing profusely the halfling answers Makis”like I said, it sounds like somewhere south of the village, somewhere in the Red Hills. I don’t go exploring much myself. Monsters in those hills.” Turning to Eadric he continues ”at the forge behind Patty’s Place. Frea Horntoe’s the smithy. Ivar’s her pa. Most likely he’s at the cottage next to the forge.” The young man returns his look to the comely druid and volunteers: ”you can find rooms at Patty’s Place…and spuds…but not sling bullets… he pauses long enough to move his barley candy from one cheek to the other. Meanwhile, Beatrix slips out the door of the mercantile.
Having learned that there is at least one person old enough to remember goings on from more than a hundred years past Urist and Snark exit the inn in search of the other Luck Makers and then a dwarf named Ivar Horntoe. The canny gnome, having learned from Patty, that the ancient dwarf is a connoisseur of a good pipe-weed and an aficionado of adventuring stories.
Beatrix doesn’t find any towers during her reconnaissance of the village, but she does happen upon Isaac and the sign post pointing out various places of interest.
Benni doesn’t find anyone at the grotto, but as he walks back towards the village he happens upon a very old, and very frail dwarf sitting on a bench outside a cottage. His creased face is turned up in appreciation of the warmth of the sun. His eyes are closed, and there’s a smile on his face.
As some (or all) of the Luck Makers converge on the area in front of the cottage and forge, the ancient dwarf doesn’t move, or open his eyes, but the sounds from the smithy cease, and a blocky dwarf maid in leather apron, a heavy cross peen hammer held in one gloved hand makes her appearance. Wiping sweat off her brow with the back of her other hand, and squinting warily at those assembled, she asks: ”who be you-an all?”

"I heard he likes good tobacco. I happen to have just picked up a special blend in Plateau City. I'd like to give some to yer dad - even if he can't help us with the info we seek." Snark will hold out a pouch of tobacco.

Snark addresses the blacksmith and let’s her know the group mean no harm. They are looking for information on some events that happened a long time ago. The gnome offers to share some of his special blend of leaf with the elder dwarf.
”You okay, pa?” asks the female dwarf, as she scans the diverse group.
”A special blend you say?” Ivar pulls a long stemmed pipe from his pocket, and knocks the dottle out from the heel of the chamber as he sniffs the air. ”I’ll be fine, Frea. You go back to work, and I’ll just have a comfortable coze with these folks.” When Beatrix asks her questions, the oldster sits a little straighter and opens his eyes, but his gaze is unfocused and does not seem to land on any one of the Luck Makers specifically. ”A sage by the name of Azodall? Rings no bells. A century or more ago, right?”
The party easily perceive that though the elder may be blind, his wits are sharp.

Benni goes on to explain why we need this information, what we hope to get from it, and how this will help the folks back home if only we can succeed in our quest.

If Snark makes it easy for the old blind dwarf, Ivar will take a pinch of tobacco between his fingers and crumble it into the chamber. He will repeat the process until the chamber is filled before gently tamping it down. Holding the pipe by the bowl, he listens attentively as first Isaac mentions Azodall and enquires about a site north of town in the Scab and then Makis - who provides the wizard’s full name - Tyron Azodall - and details that he bought some land and is thought to have built a tower with co-ordinates that point to it being somewhere in the Red Hills.
Jasper is flummoxed, and imagines wildshaping and performing an aerial reconnaissance.
Urist turns up shy.
Beatrix struggles with remembering the name of ‘the other guy’.
Snark and Eadric are frustrated by the lack of leads.
Benni, ever the diplomat, introduces himself and beseeches the old-timer to share any recollections he might have of that time so long ago - and giving him the reasons why it’s so important to the Luck Makers.
”Well, I can remember a few towers from my time adventuring in the wilds, but that was before I settled down with Ma and we had Frea. I took up work doing deliveries for the general mercantile. Old Ivar fumbles a bit with a tinder twig, but eventually gets the pipe lit. After a few puffs, he continues…
”A long, long time ago - before any traders set up in the Culverwood or the Red Hills, folks trying to make a living south or west of Crescent Valley got their provisions from the Hovel mercantile - and I was their man for delivery. His brow creases as he remembers. ”Come to think on it, there was this one fella who came to order supplies regular like. Would pay cash up front, and I would deliver them to a small river-crossing near the head of Coldstream Valley. He’d pay to have me deliver other stuff that got dropped off at the store with his name on it, too! There’s a trading post there now called Bryson’s Rest. Used by hunters and adventuring types. South of town and into the Red Hills.”
As Beatrix struggles to remember a name that’s on the tip of her tongue, Ivar adds: ”he was a secretive type. Made me promise to never say a word. But, it’s been a long time and I ain’t seen or heard from the fellow in a century and a half. Tyron Azodall. Nope. But maybe something like it…”

(I honestly could not remember the name from the journal and didn't feel like archive diving so figured someone else would remember. Amused no one did, or just didn't pick up on what I was looking for)
Beatrix is breifly annoyed that no one else remembered the name from the journal but then it comes to her. "Dallry Torazo. That was it. We have a journal that mentions him and the lantern we're looking for, but it's called Azodel's Lantern. It's a little unclear if the two are related, if Torazo made the lantern and just named it after Azodel, or if it was an alias the old sage used. We've found no sign of him but are hoping Azodel's history might help."
The information the dwarf gives is interesting and matches what they have. "That might be the right person. Thank you very much for the information."

Jasper approaches the old dwarf and says "Thank you for your help. Here's a gift: This is a druidic herbal salve that helps warm and limber up the fingers. I made it. It's not magical or anything, but I think it smells good, and it eases pain. I'll just set it here."
She places a small, unopened clay jar full an herbal salve on the arm of his chair, tapping her fingers softly so he can follow the sound.
To her friends, she says "I've heard of it too, Urist. Should we stay here for the night to prep spells before heading out?"

Ivar lets out a guffaw. ”Dallry Torazo! That’s the name. Never heard of the other fellow - Azodall - Tyron Azodall. Figure you’re right and they are one and the same. Seems like word-play - at least the way I’d spell things!”
When Jasper sets her gift beside the elder, Ivar is quick to reach out and grasp her by the wrist. ”Now you take care on the way to Bryson’s Rest. It’s a full day from Hovel. I never wanted to camp out along the trail, so I’d leave the village at the crack of dawn and get there before dark. There was only a cabin then. Bryson Blackstone was an old retired adventurer who fancied setting up a trading post. I’d drop off the goods, stay the night in his cabin, and be on my way first thing the next day. No need to stick around. Goods were paid for and Bryson would hold onto them until Torazo - or whatever his name was - would pick them up.” Letting go of the druid, he adds: ”The family built up the place and his grandson runs the trading post now.” Picking up the jar of ointment, he lifts it to his nose - and a smile creases his wrinkled visage.
Benni summarizes what the group has learned, and Makis concurs that the information is useful. The Bloodwitch wants to know if the group should strike out for the trading post, or wait for the next day. Isaac and Jasper are for spending the night in Hovel, however Urist is anxious to get going. The dwarf has heard of the Coldstream Valley, but only that the small stream that gives the valley it’s name feeds into the East Peaseblossom and dwarves exploring the Red Hills found no deposits to interest them in the area.
It’s maybe six hours before dusk (2 o’clock in the afternoon.) Rooms (and local gossip) are available at Patty’s Place. Do the party stay in Hovel, or strike out and camp en-route?
