Colt questions if the group should head back to Cloudhaven and Dapplke mentioned they are pretty depleted.

Yofiel considers but thinks they should at least check what is to be found ahead of them feeling they are committed to do that at least. Ezekiel seems like he can continue using consumables.

Marest states it bluntly "We have to go to the last room! We promised we would burn it to ash!" There is a bit more discussion but moving forward seems to be the best of the limited options available.

Again you travel down to what should be the the second to last floor according to the map you found, the lab. There are the signs of large dinos passing and the occasional sign of fighting though mercifully no dead bodies in the passage. The passage levels out and you find a large set of doors smashed off the hinges. In front of you is a large dark cavern and you can see the shapes of debris and other smashed items from where you stand, about forty feet from the darkened doorway.

Marest giggles when she hears Ms. Dapple's comment. "Lol! Try not to investigate with your face! Is this your way of saying, don't go in Face First?!" Marest bursts out laughing!

"Seriously though, give me two hours to meditate and I will regain 8 healing spells! I can't offer you anything more than that!" states Marest.

Dapple cautions everyone about leading with their faces getting a giggle from []b Marest. [/b] The others chat before moving to the door which Grim watches.

With Darkvision Grim, and any others who are looking an see a large quiet room behind the smashed doors. There are remnants of what appear to be cages, supplies and equipment but nothing si moving about that Grim can notice. Your moving about outside the smashed doors does not seem to draw any attention to the group and things are quiet outside of any noises that you make.

Was certain I had posted last night... certainty and reality don't always coincide.

Last night's post summary: Yofiel asks Ezekiel if he can mage hand her everburning torch about 35 feet ahead of the group, allowing them to see out about 75 feet. If he does not do so, she tosses it in a low arc in an attempt to have it come to rest about 35-40' feet ahead of her.

Now with the light revealing additional parts of the room, Yofi listens to discern whether the momentary clattering of the torch landing has stirred up motion anywhere ahead of them. She also glances at the ceiling.

She is ready to draw and release her arrow if a threat appears - but she will try to be certain it is actually a threat.

Marest using her innate Drow abilities, casts Dancing Lights producing 4 spheres, sending one to E11, F11, E12, F12. Hopefully these light spheres increase the range that can be viewed. The spheres hover 5 feet off the floor.

Now that any element of surprise is gone, he looks over his shoulder at the group huddled at the door, faces the room again, then belts out an awful roar and finishes with "If anyone is in here, better come out now!"

Yofiel scrunches her left shoulder to cover her left ear without letting go the bow and arrow. She can't really cover her right ear at the same time. But Grim's roar and Siolo's scream are a bit much for her ears, though she smiles at their bellicose proclamations.

As the echoes die down, she relaxes the shoulder, and resumes readiness for missile attack. She mouths to Kaze, 'thank you!'

Moving into the lab the group can see more of the destruction but also what may be intact supples that the community could use stacked against the wall in various places. The cells have been mostly destroyed and the tables on the south wall have been damaged though their are remaining notes and what looks like lab equipment.

Dapple hangs back while Youfiel doesnt notice anything out of the ordinary beyond the destruction. Colt watches and Grim tosses his torch into the room and roars a challenge. Kaze instructs Patches to protect Yofiel. Marest is the first to notice movement,

Marest is the first to see the carpets of fungus and mushrooms that were in the corners of the room move revealing themselves to be well hidden oozes. Striding forth with the oozes is a very unusual site, is it a dinosaur? It it an ooze? Is it a dinosaur made of ooze? Whatever it is it is coming for the party along with its chortes as they all flow though the debris of the destroyed laboratory.

The bard finally agrees it is time to rest up before moving forward.

I knew we should have gone left at Albuquerque!

Marest using her plethora of Knowledge skills, tries to determine more about the Oozes coming their way! (Knowledge Dungeoneering: 1d20+9 = 18 ; used Dapple's bit o luck)). After looking a bit, Marest exclaims, "That the Oozes are are Slime Mold aka Oozes. They can cause rot and resist fire. Can engulf a party member, so be careful!"

Marests moves one of the 4 light spheres from E11 to 13D.

Grim holds his guisarme at the ready but it may not be necessary as their seems to be a consensus to withdraw.

Yofiel warns them of the dangers of these new menaces, then Marest repeats the same warning.

Grim's experience is pretty much all above ground in the jungle and these cave dwelling things are new to him, and he takes their word that their group is not ready to take them on at the moment. Not without some extra planning.

Grim answers Kaze, "I guess we back up for now. If anything, force them to do some work to catch us. If the keep following us, we lure them into the dinning room and see if they like crawly-crawlies with tentacles."

Grim backs up (backward move speed (?)) and if any one of them come within threat reach of his guisarme, he swipes at it.

Otherwise, when they reach the doors, he tries to close them if they aren't busted too much, to narrow the 'attack line' as much as possible.

If it appears too dangerous to try to close the doors (the oozes approach too fast), he simply keeps moving back up the way they came (assuming everyone is skiddadling out of there as well).

Yofiel adds this information: "Most of them move about ten feet at a time - except I don't know about that ooze-a-saur - it's an oozey troodon - probably can move about forty. If it pursues, we might have to take that one down - or run it by the big saur opposite where we found Ellie's book, and let the slimey crawlers and running ooze fight it out. By the way, those slow oozes may have a high intellect, and telepathy." The bard is so grateful for the training she received in becoming a bard, and that she remembers at least some of the lessons she learned at bard school.

The troodon likely is about 3' tall and 6' long, weighing about 50 pounds. Unless its ooze composition modifies its weight somewhat.

As the Oozes ooze forward Dapple gives Marest a bit of luck while Yofiel fires off an arrow at the ooze-a-sarus while calling out what the creatures are. The arrow hits surprisingly. { Yofiel if you were aiming at the ooze-a-sarus please roll damage.}

Ezekiel declares that he will cover the party and makes the oozes pretty with glitter. The glitterdust does little else because oozes do not have eyes to blind. Kaze backs up asking how to fight such a thing.

Grim agrees with the suggestion to run and the party finds they can quickly outpace the oozes. It is easily noted that the ooze-a-sarus is not any faster then the others. They make it back to the previous room unmolested and, as they know where the problems spots are, they are out of harms way. IF anyone goes to peak back into the lab they will find now sign of movement or the ooze things though there are other green mushroom clumps and the oozes could be blending in with them.

Now what. The party is safe-ish.

Surprised her wobbly arrow actually hit the ooze-a-saurus (3hp plus 1 hp electrical=4hp), Yofi lets one more arrow fly at the critter (AC 13, 3 hp plus 3 electrical=6hp), for 10 hp total.

Then she continues back the way she came, thinking over what she just saw.

So as not to awaken the crawlers from the other large dino-corpse, she walks through the pinch-point where Colt rescued the bow, and onward toward the entrance. As they move, she says, "Y'know, that oozy troodon? It was moving as slowly as the floor-bound oozes. It was just an Id ooze - kind of smart, and able to change shape. Those oozes can be nasty - but if we can get enough missile weapons going against them, we might have a chance, as they move slowly. Until I realized the dino fellow was more or less like the others... well."

Yofiel thanks Ezekiel for the kindness of rescuing her everburning torch from the approaching oozes and returning it to her.

She sees Siolo nodding his head. "You agree about using missile weapons, Siolo?" she asks. "I've got arrows. Ezekiel has his wand of magic missiles. Um... what other missiles have we?"

Once they're safe Colt starts laughing while he pants from the short hard sprint. "See, Dapple! We were careful!" He soon quiets down however.

When Yofiel plots strategy and asks about missiles, Colt frowns. He's seen what Ezekial and Yofiel can do, and knows what he can contribute compared to them. Nevertheless he says, quietly dutiful,
"I've got my sling,"

One more item: The bard gives a strategy using only current resources - but asks if people want to do it now, or wait until after rest, where more options open up.

What Colt says jars her memory, and helps Yofiel better understand Siolo's enthusiastic head nodding. "That is good, Colt. So you're not bad at hitting about 50 feet out, and can go two, three times farther under decent conditions, right? Listen, these oozes are easy to hit, and slow. That doesn't mean you'll hit it each time, but on average you should be able to get them maybe two out of three throws, I'd wager. Honestly, I'm amazed I got the dino-shaped one with my first arrow. It was a weak shot, and did not do much harm, but at least it hit."

She turns to Siolo. "Say, don't you have an ever-burning torch? You can toss that off to one side of the room - maybe up on top of a cage. AND - You carry a sling, too, right? So, you and Colt could send your sling bullets or stones against them. I've got my arrows, and the whip - well, I have the whip for another, maybe, 45 minutes - which to keep within ten feet of, and it can reach out another fifteen feet farther than that.

"Marest - can you do the dancing lights spell again and get the lights out up to maybe 130 or so feet away - well, maybe closer - so we can see them coming? Any other ideas?

"Ezekiel - can you mage hand my magic torch again for intermediate light, as well as zap away with your wand?"

"Grim - Grim, you know how to use a composite bow, right? I have a composite masterwork strength bow. If you use it, it does a small bit of extra damage." [It is +1 to hit/+1 damage.] "I am using this bow that Colt found, so you could use my other one, or use your own."

She turns to Kaze. "Say, Wind Walker - you carry a crossbow, right? Care to use it? Against slow-moving weird things that can really mess you up if they get too close?"

"And you, Dapple, you are good a dagger throwing, no?" the elf asks the halfling. "I know you sometimes help people with guidance, as well - might improve someone's accuracy with ranged weapons, right? I have two healing spells left."

After this whirlwind of question-asking and suggestion-making, Yofiel pauses, then queries the group, "Shall we try this now, and have less risk of braving a waking T-Rex, or go ahead and rest up first? I am fine with going now, and would be fine with resting up before we try it. It is up to you, friends. Point back towards the kitchen door if you want to rest first. Point toward the room we just left if you want to try this now."

She also thinks she can sing a bardic song of inspiration to help people focus as they aim their weapons.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
If we go now:
We use the molds' slow movement speed (10') against them, by engaging, if necessary, in a fighting retreat. Meanwhile, we blast away with ranged weapons, hitting them before they can get to us.

Summary: Yofiel can enter with bardic inspire courage (+2 on all attacks & weapon damage) via song or chant.
Marest can send out dancing lights perhaps 70 feet away.
Ezekiel can mage hand the ever-burning torch to shed light in a 40' radius (80' diameter). And he can cast magic missiles from his wand.
Yofiel and Grim can shoot arrows (Grim can use Yofi's masterwork composite strength shortbow, +1 to hit (masterwork), +1 damage (str))
Colt and Siolo (if he chooses to come out of wildshape) can sling bullets
Kaze can shoot crossbow bolts
Also, if Siolo drops wildshape, he has an ever-burning torch, similar to Yofiel's
Dapple can toss a few daggers - and/or assist with Guidance spell or as she chooses.

Strategy: Hit the ones closest first. Tactical backing up (light retreat) if needed.

If we go after rest:
The above can serve as a framework, but then we have many more options, which the PCs can tell us about. Fire is likely ineffective against the molds.

We also gain a better ability to recover, with more spells for healing, and detoxification if needed.

And, there is a greater risk that the T-Rex may be awake by the time we leave.

Grim remains at the exit to the corridor to the lab watching for any oozzy thing coming up the passage. He's satisfied after long enough time that they didn't follow.
As the others discuss things and Yofiel sets out a pland, Grim goes over in his mind on the little they saw of the oozzies.

He inspects his own self-made short composite bow, made with a lot of work and pride but it by no means is a masterpiece.

"I'll use that excellent bow of yours as long as you don't need it. As far as taking the time to rest, I don't know. I'd prefer to exit out the bottom, circle the base of the plateau until we get to the lift, and get home that way. In that case we got time to rest. However, it the exit to the jungle floor is blocked and we have to get home the way we got in, then resting will push our luck a bit with that Greater Thunder God. I'm fine to go now. What does our Shaman say?" he looks at Marest as the goes over to Yofiel and takes the masterwork bow, pulling on the string a few times testing it.

"Throwing daggers during a retreat is a good way to lose all your daggers," Dapple points out. She moves through the bottleneck with the others.

She works her way next to Grim and gives him a Bit of Luck.

Yofiel lets a second arrow fly and the ooze-a-sarus burbles as they hit as she retreated back the way you all came. Siolo nods and Yofeil takes that as agreement with ranged attacks and thanks Ezekiel [/b] for returning her touch.

Colt offers up his sling as Yofiel offers up something better, a plan.

Grim agrees with using the more appropriate bow and Colt mentions that they are slow and Dapple is concerned about losing her daggers.

As the plan starts to shape up and the discussion continues the party figures that the biggers oozes are quite slow and the ooze-a-sarus is about twice as fast. That said the oozes did not follow you out of the room so it is anyone's guess if they will follow.

He turns to Yofiel and asks "What does your lore say about how lightning affects them?"

Yofiel grins at Dapple's comment. "You're right, of course, Dapple. We need to get you a bigger supply of daggers. It's fine if you hang on to the ones you've got for now."

"Well, Grim, the one I struck twice with the arrows from this bow here seemed to take damage from the electrical discharge - and, from what I recall, it's mainly fire that they resist, not electricity."

"Yes, Colt - and everyone - cast your vote - fight now, or rest and fight later?"

She looks to her friends to get their thoughts. "They might have rearranged themselves, of course. Oh, and, they move about ten feet at a time - but also can attack from ten feet away. So, if you can keep about 25 feet or more away from them, you likely can back up as they draw near. I can't remember what all they do - but something about rot that saps your strength and health, and makes you more and more tired, then it gets worse from there.

"Also, they're not smart in the way we are, exactly, but they seem to be able to figure some things out pretty well. And some of them can make people confused. And they're covered with mildew, fungi, toadstools. Just try not to touch them - or let them touch you."

"Marest, I do not know for certain - but Grim was watching them last, and said they seemed to settle back down in the room where we found them. And, you vote for some rest. We'll see how the others choose, too. If the group forgoes the rest, you should hang toward the back. Uh, if we don't rest, can you still cast dancing lights again?" Yofi asks.

"Good, Kaze. Thank you. Your vote?"

Colt questions what the party will do next and Grim asks him to cast a vote. Grim wants to finish this off. Marest wonders if the oozes will venture out of the room to chase them and asks for a couple of hours to meditate.

Kaze is confident in this crossbow ability. Yoteil calls for a vote and thinks Kaze and Grim for thiers. Siolo thinks and nods his head which is probably a vote to proceed. Ezekiel thinks his best weapon will be force missiles.

The party continues to debate and make plans and will need to decide on a marching order for is hoped to be a battle kept at range..

"I'm not good at keeping time underground. I spent my time in the jungles, not caverns. How long have we been down here? We only have 8 hours to do what we came to do. Add two hours of rest to the hours we've been down here and figure out how close we get to wakey time for our Thunder God guard up there."

Grim's already cast his vote to move on but does not push it.
He keeps watch, inside the kitchen and down the passage.

"It seems the majority wish to go now with the plan as laid out.

"Meanwhile, my tall dark beauty," Yofiel speaks to Marest, "even your cantrips can help a good deal. Light is essential to this plan. Can you cast dancing lights ("Range: 140 feet or less [though ~65' out might be better] ... you create up to four lights that resemble lanterns or torches (and cast that amount of light)") to allow light deeper into the cavern? And of course, stand rear of the group, tight against the wall, and be ready to join in an orderly retreat if needed, or advance if possible.

"Three more items:
1. Siolo, will you come out of wild shape? I love your power and ferocity as a dinosaur - but you do not want to attack these critters with claw and tooth. If you do, you may catch the rot. Your sling acorns*, and the light shed by your ever-burning torch, will likely aid us more, and help us see more. If you can toss it maybe 45 to 50 feet away, that will light up the whole center of the cavern. And the noise of it clattering on the floor may cause the critters to show their positions quickly. However, if you wish to remain in this form, that is your decision.

2. Please, everyone, prepare your ammunition. String your bows, set your crossbows, and have your sling bullets or acorns at the ready. Wand out, Ezekiel - and as we move in, cast mage hand to hold my ever-burning torch - a bit higher in the air this time, maybe 12 feet in the air and straight ahead, so they can't grab it or knock it down easily, and ~35 feet away from you.

Dapple thinks continuing is fine as long as they are careful. Marest really wants a rest but Grim is concerned about the guard outside the entrance. Yapple issues some instructions as Siolo reverts to human form getting his torch and sling ready. Siolos transformation looks painful to Colt who asks if he is ok before getting his sling ready.

Having tested their ability to bravely run away the group heads back down to the laboratory. Little has changed, actually nothing has changed on the walk down though the group proceeds with caution and one would assume quiet. Reaching the entrance to the laboratory you do not immediately see the ooze creatures in the darkened room though there are piles of rot and fungus that could be the oozes or just natural growth in a cave that is not being maintained any longer.

Waiting a moment nothing moves or attacks..

Colt carefully extinguishes his torch by rolling it on the floor and tucks it into his pack with the warm end sticking out the top. He leaves his staff leaning against the wall at the top of the stairs down to the lab. He tells Foggy to stay and guard the staff. The dog sits for a few seconds, then walks his front legs forward until he's lying down.

The young man follows the others back to the lab. Just outside he swings the free end of the sling up and catches it in his right hand. His left, digs in his belt pouch and pulls out a lovely smooth stone. He reaches down, grabs the soft leather patch in the middle of the sling and wraps it halfway around the stone, forming a pocket. Then he holds the pocket closed over the stone until he's ready to whirl and fire.

Yodel readies her whip and inspires the group with song. Dapple gives Kaze a bit of luck. Kaze in turn readies his crossbow and looks for targets.

Colt leaves Foggy to watch the staff, which kind of happens, and readies his sling but doesnt see any immediate targets.

Grim readies a shot with his bow and offers to yell again but if the singing isnt bringing anything out would a roar do it? Siolo likewise readies his sling but doesnt spot any movement.

Marests dancing lights move into the room causing shadows to bend and twist as they move giving the whole room an eerie feeling. The shadows lengthen as the move between the destroyed cages and smashed bit but nothing moves. The room is still but as the lights move you can see that there's more to the room further in there appears to be a corner and maybe a hallway, it is hard to tell given the angle and shifting lights.

On the map are placed small blue criss-crossed ovals with white backgrounds. They represent where arrows have been aimed & shot. The light green ones show where the whip has been aimed & struck.

Dapple moves a bit into the room.
Marrest brings up the rear but increases party communication.
Grim has sharp eyes but doesn't see anything even though he finds the barrels suspicious.
Yofiel, very intuitively, launches off some arrows in a hope to find a hiding slime.
Colt, worried about ammunition doesnt attack shadows.
Ezekiel has a teory about them not being able to take the shape of something effectively which sounds really correct to the group.

The party advances slowly eyes wide but their just doesnt seem to be anything to notice. Yofiel and Grim seem quite perceptive but they are finding nothing in this part of the lab.

Ode to Dancing Lights

Marest having given some time to work out the logistics of the Dancing Lights spell, decides to try something a bit different with it..

Marest will send all 4 of them into the room at a 20' distance from each other (10' radius spell) and move them about to determine how big the room is.

Marest then explains to her friends via the Messages spell, by pointing in their direction, "that the changes in light levels will give away when they go 'through' a wall or something if that is a possibility. By using both my knowledge of where I am moving them, and the light that it is being cast at the various levels within the room, we will get an idea of the room and major contents in the center of the space. Also, if they stop and cannot move, we will learn of various features or creatures within. If the spheres dim, and cannot move through walls as such, we will have learned of the location of the Oozes."

Marest continues, "Even if they are stopped, the trick is to have two pairs of lights 5' apart and rotating about one another at various speeds (maximum of 100' per round). As soon as one pair hits an object and stops, I get a reduction in the flickering that comes from them rotating at 100'/round about each other like a police car light. Your thoughts?"

Grim moves into the room, (along Row 10) and pokes his arrow into the boxes and casks and stuff along the north wall, looking for something less solid and oozy. As he does so, Marest goes into some sort of speech about her magical swirling lights, and since his back is to her, it morphs into more like Gibberling gibberish.

If nothing he pokes gives way to an ooze or other living creature, he turns back to face the center and re-nocks his arrow.

'What was that about lights?"

Silo asks Marest to move his lits along the ceiling.
Marest has a more complicated plan that may or may not be fully understood by the powers that be.
Yofiel moves forward encouraging the others to do so as well.
Dapple wonders where the oozes went if they move so slow but remembers even a smail can cross a road given time.
Colt keeps his eyes peeled
Kaze does have a thought on the ooze-a-sarus. It was probably formed from a dino that died due to the ooze who used it to reproduce.
Ezekiel has a theory which prompts Kaze to have another.

So the party, as slow as oozes, moves into the room. Slowly they move. Step by step. inch by inch. The lights ove about revealing that their is more to the cavern to the east, a hallway tha may open up but the angle makes it hard to see. To the north there is also something but, again, the angels are wrong to see what is going on. Of note, their are no dead bodies as their were in other places, clearly the ooze had fied that problem at least.

Yofiel moves in cajoling everyone else to move up with her while she keeps inspiring and has an attack ready.
Ezekiel moves along with the others.
Colt advances but makes sure nothing is left behind them that could attack.
Grim follows instructions.
Siolo hesitates but cannot put his finger on why.
Dapple, Marrest and Kaze continue on.

As the party charges in super slow motion though the cavern they see that the area is indeed much bigger then they initially saw. As the round the corner another rooms if found to the north with a large cage and two smaller round cages. The round cages have been destroyed but the larger cage is intact though the door is wide open. Their is no movement in that direction and you are all confident that their is nothing hostile to the north.

To the east you can see the beginnings of an a larger room with more smashed cages. From where you are you can see part of the room and see that it extends back down to the south out of sightlines.

Yofiel stops her singing. The residual effects of inspire courage will last for a few more rounds, but she wants to ensure she has enough in reserve for when their squishy opponents are actually found.

"Friends, please, let us not get so scattered. The peril may emerge as we pass 25 feet ahead, or we may have to travel further. Marest, your dancing lights are marvelous. You can't stay 70 or 80 feet behind us. You, too, Siolo, and others. Colt, thanks for advancing my ever-burning torch. I think I will imitate Siolo, and wedge that above my haversack. Ezekiel, good job on the mage hand carrying the burning torch. Carry on with that, if you please.

"Missile team - Colt - here." She opens her haversack, reaches into a bag filled with metal spheres (1000 ball bearings). She pulls out about 20, fills an empty pouch, and hands it to him. "If you don't have enough ammo, this might help. When we get in the next area, can you start pinging those out to try to rouse any hiding oozes?"

"Siolo, do you need some of these, or do you have enough sling bullets or acorns already?" If he does not, she will give him 20 of her ball bearings. They are smaller than sling bullets, but still should carry enough sting to rouse a hiding critter if struck. "I don't have a spare pouch, but maybe you have room in the one you already carry." For Siolo only Highlight to display spoiler: {}"I know you just had a big scare, friend, but I also know you have courage. Courage, my brother," she uses message for his ears only.

"Please, try to keep up. Marest, let's get those lights quickly dancing around the cavern, all right?"

She hands Grim ten arrows (she brought 80 with her on this journey). "For the scattering, right?"

"Everyone ready? Questions, concerns? As soon as we are gathered together, I'm heading along the passage."

The spheres in the sky go round and round

Marest is trying to manipulate a two-sphere pairing to act like a binary star revolving around each other as they move. So, two pairs of binary spheres revolving around each other as they pan the Lab Room to light up Oozes wherever they might be hiding.

"All right, Dapple, I'll be mindful of your stride length!" Yofi responds to the cleric's explanation.

"Shoot some spots to the left in the next chamber when we first get there," she says to Grim as he wonders what he's going to do with the extra arrows. "Then be ready to shoot toward the right. We want to scare them up... at least that's the theory," Yofiel explains to Grim, as well as to Colt, Siolo, and Kaze. "Kaze, I have no more bolts - so save yours for when we actually know where they are. But Siolo, Colt - I gave you the extra ones to 'waste' on trying to rouse the creepers before we are on top of them."

"Ezekiel - be mindful of moving the torch via mage hand, too!" she recommends. "Left side of cavern ahead for now is great."

"Marest - I like the swirling lights. I hope someday to see one of the 'Please carts' you mentioned use them.

Kaze grins as Yofiel lays out her battle plans. Her tone of voice reminds him of one of the tribal elders, a woman who could be both kind and harsh if you didn't listen to her when she told you to do something. All he says in return to Yofiel is "Yes mam."

Siolo begrudgingly nods to Yofiel's plan and moves closer still. Something was nagging at him though. An unease lingers not just in his mind, but throughout his body. He chose not to express it though, thinking it was probably just him.

Yofiel stops sinning and starts issuing instructions and asking questions.
Dapple says she is keeping up as best she can.
Ezekiel wonders where the blobby things went.
Marest moves his lights about a bit.
Kaze acknowledges the plan.
Grim starts into the room as he moves forward just in time to notice movement!!

From around the corners of the larger cavern the oozes appear, clearly have been waiting out of site lines in case the party came back. No dumb beasts, the oozes picked their spot and surge out around the corners where they were hidden. Ezekiel launches a streaking magic missile that strikes the lead blue ooze causing a hissing sound. The ooze closes and strikes at Yofiel trying to slam her. {To Hit 10}

The other oozes follow appear having been to the south of the opening while the ooze-a-sarus was to the north with the blue ooze.

The dancing whip struck at the blue ooze as it entered its space, hitting AC 22 for 5 hp damage. So blue is down 12 at the moment.

Yofiel's arrow flies at her earlier target, the ooze-a-saur, hitting AC 14 for 6 hp weapon damage plus 2 hp electrical damage. It has now taken a total of 18 hp damage.

"FIGHTING RETREAT, BACK THE WAY WE CAME!" shouts Yofiel. She says to Kaze's dog, "Go there, Patches!" as she points to the east (back the way we came).

The elf engages in an acrobatic retreat trying to avoid an attack of opportunity (Acrobatics 15) from the leading blue ooze. The whip moves in the same direction as the bard, ready to strike again.

Feeling a heroic surge, Yofiel quickly launches an additional arrow, striking the blue ooze for 6 hp piercing damage, and 5 hp electrical damage, 11 total, so blue ooze is down 23.

As the oozes appear from their waiting location, Siolo slings the stone bullet he had prepared. Unfortunately, while the stone bullet was ready, Siolo acted too quickly causing the stone to fly wildly off target.

Siolo, frustrated by his failure, takes a quick second to breathe as he retrieves another bullet as he backs up.

For the next round, any time the target rolls a d20, he may roll twice and take the more favorable result.

Grim's not about to fall back just yet if they are all that slow, they are still some 20' or more away. He lets fly the nocked arrow at the front 'oozer' (as opposed to the 'front runner').

Blue Ooze (name of a new Rock Group)

Grim's not happy Yofiel's acrobatics past him distracted his aim. But, he's got some time still.

If the blue ooze is out, then Kaze aims toward the ooze-a-saur. If the blue ooze is still active, he aims his crossbow at that one, then moves backwards to S11, using acrobatics to avoid an AoO.

Dapple backs off.
Colt moves up while he loads his sling.
Yofiels whip strikes the ooze this is followed by an arrow into the ooze-a-sarus.
Siolo launches a rock but it misses dinging off something behind the ooze.
Ezekiel is worried they got outsmarted by the brainless but his missiles do more talking, slamming into the ooze. {pulling the vail back, Int: 10 for the oozes so average intellect}
Grim is not ready to retreat and strikes a hard hit on the blue ooze.
Marest casts grease and calls for fire but Yofiel calls out that fire wont work.
Kaze also strikes the blue ooze which looks rough but not out yet.

It appears the ooze were smart enough to hide but not smart enough not to get bottled up in a hallway as they follow the group. The blue ooze is in rough shape as is the ooze-a-sarus which holds back some. The green and red ooze press in behind the blue ooze.

Having closed on Grim all the ooze can do is attempt to slam down onto Grim. {Hit: 18 | Dam: 6 | DC16 Fort or Highlight to display spoiler: { save Fortitude DC 16; onset 1 day; frequency 1/day; effect 1d2 Str damage and 1 Con damage and fatigue; cure 1 save. }

Grim wants to keep the oozes bottled up as long as possible so he stays put despite taking a slug (pun intended) from an ooze.

However his bow is now fairly ineffective, so he tosses it over his shoulder for his friends to pick up.
"Here! Take this, I got getter stuff!" he hells.

He then draws his falchion (Move Action - no AoO) and slices into the blob in front of him.

"Marest, stay right!" Colt whips the pocketed stone out of his hand and sets it whirling overhead. The ooze comes forward and Colt sees a sliver of it left of the elf. He releases the end of the sling and the stone flies.

Into the fray!

Marest, following Colt's lead, stays on the right as the battle persists.

Trying out her new wizard spells, Marest casts Maggic Missle sending two missiles into the big ooze at position W10.

A missile of magical energy darts forth from your fingertip and strikes its target, dealing 1d4+1 points of force damage.

The missile strikes unerringly, even if the target is in melee combat, so long as it has less than total cover or total concealment. Specific parts of a creature can't be singled out. Objects are not damaged by the spell.

For every two caster levels beyond 1st, you gain an additional missiletwo at 3rd level, three at 5th, four at 7th, and the maximum of five missiles at 9th level or higher. If you shoot multiple missiles, you can have them strike a single creature or several creatures. A single missile can strike only one creature. You must designate targets before you check for spell resistance or roll damage.

Since Blue-ooze (Bluuues?) is probably splatted, the dancing whip hits AC 29 for 7 hp damage on the green one. And the whip grapples the ooze, with a CMB of 34.

Yofiel realizes that the oozes are moving twice as fast as she had recalled from her instructor. Maybe he described ones that were slowed? Or a different subspecies?

Ah, the whip has grappled the green ooze. She shoots the ooze with an arrow (AC 15) for 6 hp piercing damage. She is pretty certain the blue ooze is out of this combat, or any future one.

Grim strikes the blue ooze after it tried to infect him.
Dapple gives Kaze some luck and steps back.
Ezekiel launches a couple more missiles at the green ooze.
Colt strikes the easy to hit ooze with a stone.
Marest redirects their missiles to the green ooze causing more damage.
Siolo and Kaze also land land blows on the green ooze.
As the ooze die Yofiel shots an arrow into the remaining large red ooze.

The companied attacks of the party are too much for he blue and green oozes and they lose cohesion dead.

The red ooze shakes violently and a puddle of slime can be seen seeping out underneath it, clearly this was a conscious action. The ooze-a-sarus retreats around the northern corner.

Yofiel moves through the passage into the larger area, singing as she travels (Acrobatics 25 to avoid slipping), going for the retreating ooze-a-saurus. The whip lashes the spitter hitting AC 24 (not 29) for 8 hp damage. It attempts a grapple, CMB 31.

Grim doesn't know much about slimes or oozes but knows enough about slippery looking goo on the floor. He simply avoids stepping into any part of goo covered floor and moves further into the cavern. He's in a center position in case something from south or east still lurks waiting to pounce, ooze, or slitther.

Note for DM (& Marest): Grease is a base substance (aka, it's alkaline). The slime mold's acid is, of course, acidic. Since the red ooze laid down acid goop, well, the grease from Marest's spell which lies beneath it will tend to cancel it out. The pH of the grease will move upward from the 1-6 range toward pH7, the acid will move downward toward pH 7 from the 8-14 ph range. So, based upon where she laid it (centered at C10), it covers about 9/16ths of the acidic area - possibly neutralizing (or at least significantly reducing) the damage the red ooze's discharge might otherwise cause. My guess is the acid is a bit more acidic than the grease is alkaline, therefore the mixture of the two would retain at least a slight acidity, but not cause quite as much damage.

I placed an orange square (with slightly rounded corners) over the 10'x10' green slime square, but offset according to where you laid the slime, and Marest laid the grease. -Kim

Yofiel follows first nimbally avoiding falling and uses her whip to end the ooze-a-sarus.

With all the oozes dead, and any consumables that were posted last round saved, the group can pause to catch their breath. The fight they ran from turned out to not be a problem once some strategic thinking was applied to the situation, no one was ever in danger of being enveloped. The slippery slime can be avoided and even canceled to some extent with a casting of the spell grease although the grease would fade before the slime dissipated.

Regardless of what is done you can get around the slime to access the room. The oozes themselves slowly dissipate and the acid loses its potency.

With time you can see the extent of the room and find that this second section is much larger and looks as though it has once contained several cages. Some are mostly intact and could be used with some minor repairs. Their are also some papers and supplies scattered about the room.

In the alcove to the north their is a large intact cage with its door open and a table that has only had minor damage, clearly it was a work station and their are alchemical notes around the area.

"Well done, all. I thank Lord Gargul for answering my prayers - we all still breathe."

Yofiel joins in the gathering of documentation. In particular, she looks for any larger tomes. "We will burn these," she says, indicating the written matter. "Before we do, I plan to skim at least parts of them. Why? Not to reproduce the things they have twisted, but rather to have a hand up in understanding the nature of the changes they effected, and how to counter, how to untwist. But we will burn these. I plan to skim, and what I have skimmed, to place into the burn pile. If any are still hungry, feel free to take a moment to eat."

As there are a few tables, the bard indicates one, and asks, "Please place written things here. I will skim them, then - ah, here is a basket - I'll place them within. If any object to me doing this, let me know. If any want to help in the reading, be my guest. I'd like to get through as much as I can in two hours, three at most. We then burn them. The papers, if they relate to the process, do not leave this room. If there are some that are of other natures, that do not relate to the experiments, we can decide. But any writings that would allow another to replicate what they have done, we burn.

"There may be other worthwhile things here that may help us elsewhere. Perhaps some of you might search for such."

She is open to discussion. As she waits to hear others' thoughts, she sits down and quickly begins to take individual papers and parchments, skims each, then tosses it in the basket. And listens as others speak.

She does think to add this. "I say a maximum of three hours, since much beyond say four hours risks us finding a terrible dinosaur rousing from slumber at the upper entrance. Some of you - Marest? may wish to take a couple hours to rest up in the interim. Grim - I know you were thinking about seeing if we can get out through the lower level. I'm open to that option, though the upper is the more sure exit until we've seen what lies below."

Colt retrieves Foggy and he and Dapple start scooping up documents.
Ezekiel comments that the oozes were not so bad after all.
Grim keeps watch.
Yofiel and Marest start going over the papers deciding that three hours of reading is their limit. Yofiel checks to see if Siolo wants to do some reading as well.

Yofiel and Marest are certainly smart enough to figure out most things but some of this stuff doesnt make sense. Much is written in a personal short hand that makes the investigations slow going. There is a lot that points to enhancing the intelligence of the dinos so they can be better trained though their are notes of caution against enhancing intelligence to the point of full sapience as a fully thinking dinosaur could be quite dangerous. You can certainly see why the spirits feel these items must be destroyed.

One batch of papers talks of alchemical methods of making the creatures more compliant but the actual methodology is clearly in coded language and no practical insight is gained in to exactly how to do it other the the listing of a few relatively common alchemical supplies, In all it is just to complicated without context of what was going on, maybe with months of research and trying to bring subjects down a similar parallel line it could be done though the spirits might object.

As those who are not reading search the area their are several things that could help in the rebuilding. Tools are found and the metal bars of the cages could be repurposed, at least those that are not too bent. Also their is some supply of dried meats that were missed during the attack and these could supplement the communities food stores quite nicely. Beyond that their are ropes, candles and various other day to day items that, again, the camp may be able to make use of. You do also find that their is one last pathway off of this space that you would assume eventually leads outside at the bottom.

Grim only vaguely pays attention to the activity surrounding the documents and cautiosly moves to the exit, planting himself a few feet from it and keeps watch.

Once there, and if not getting attacked, he feels the air for any flow into the cavern that would indicate if any doors down the tunnel are closed or busted open, as that would make a difference in the burning of the papers and the smoke in the room from that.

"Thank you, friend," Yofiel says to Siolo. "A druid's eye can be of value on matters such as we have at hand." She turns to Marest. "As can the mind of an alchemist such as you, sister. May the three of us together, I pray, gain insight in how better to deal with the results of the effects wrought here."

She continues her examination. She looks up after a time. "Might some of you not engaged in the documents figure how to make a travois from some of the long metal rods and ropes and baskets? If through the jungle we travel, it could be useful. Also, determine what we should bring with us."

Dapple seems up for lighting a fire and getting while the getting is good but Yofiel thinks they should move a little slower. There are considerations of what to do with the dead dinos and, more importantly, the dead townfolk who are decaying down here. Colt and Kaze [/b] keep a look out and Colt is all about using the lower exit asap. Grim joins Kaze guarding.

Yofiel and Siolo gather and examine papers but Ezekiel is concerned that they are just covering up the crimes of those who worked in this facility Yofiel also suggests making a travois to get any useful supplies out of the facility. {Your not so bright GM had to look up travois.}

Yofiel listens to Dapple. "The spirits all nodded yes when I asked them the question, 'Will you drop the barrier if we agree to get rid of the experimental documentation?' The documentation, I believe, is written down. Perhaps beakers or machines might also be broken, burnt if they can be. But cages? Ropes? We do not need to burn everything that's down here. Those documents that describe the processes, surely. If you see something that you think should be included which somehow gives a clue to the process, let's see it. Otherwise, we don't need to burn food, I hope, or standard tools, or containers."

The elf points out to Siolo a few documents she has looked at that might benefit from scrutiny by a druid - otherwise, she suggests he hit the stack of so-far-unread materials.

[OOC: So as not to drag this out too long, can we say we take the allocated time, then submit the items to the flame? Much as the bard would like a fuller understanding, she also realizes this is a temptation she should not indulge further, and there is a real need to fulfill our pledge to the noble spirits of those who permitted us to pass within.]

If no one else has taken the time to put together a travois, this is something she can do in about ten to fifteen minutes, being careful and thorough. She already has made several sets of such, albeit not with metal rods before.

"Shall we discover whether there be a suitable exit?" she asks. "If there is, that is good to know. And if there is, let us not exit until we have returned to notify the spirits, that they may find their rest. Once that is done, then through the bottom, if feasible, or through the top are both possibilities. It may be safer for us to go up and across the plateau, than to risk down below, where many giant dinosaurs dwell."

Yofi also asks people what items they think we ought to take back to Cloudhaven. "And hey - has anyone looked for hidden or secret doorways?"

"What I put forth as our offering was to get rid of the documentation. As a group and as individuals they seemed to acquiesce to that offering. What concerns on this matter do you have, Marest? Have you an objection to us following through on the matter? If the group desires, we can return and, if they have not departed, seek additional clarification. Such as, 'Do we need to burn all of the carcasses of the dinosaur bodies that remain?' and, 'Anything else?'"

"I don't feel any draft of air here, I'll just move to just outside this chamber and see." he adds then that the logistics of pulling a fully loaded metal travoi up all those stairs is beyond his capabilities.

The group discusses and studies. They do not get any information that could be acted on due to the shorthand nature of the notes that acts as code in many cases. Their are references to various distillation techniques and a centrifuge being needed for some parts but the details are at best hazy. You could recreate some of the tools but not the work, at least not with committing to a lot of studying or finding specialists, neither of which seem to appeal and doing so would counter the wishes of the spirits.

As this process starts and the papers begin to burn the spirits drift gown and position themselves near the exit. They watch the flames catch and feelings of gratitude fill the room mixing with the still present feeling of remorse and sorrow. They watch as you move about the room and the flames grow, the smoke is not thick and drifts up the stairs showing that ventilation was considered in the design of the facility.

As the flames start to die down another image is shown to the group. It is Maya the monsterologist arriving at Cloudhaven. She is friendly and happy to find a place that she feels accepted and can be useful. They work together in and everyone seems to get along well. Occasionally she takes out small packs of dinoss to train and brings back supplies form their hunt. The final image is her heading out with the pack a day before the attack happens. Something happens, the dinos suddenly are smarter and then they escape and attack. The vision ends with a feeling of sympathy for Maya.

Dapple watches the final image in silence, then sighs. "I don't know what they expected," she murmurs. But she also says a prayer to Wardd, hoping the researchers could find better luck in the next life than they did in this one.

Kaze watches as the fires burns and then begins to go out with no more fuel to keep it going. When the spirits show up, he doesn't react as he guessed they would show up once the party completed the task that the spirits had asked them to complete

Colt pitches his voice low. His comment is only for the benefit of those still watching the passage down. He wouldn't want to make the elf lady that spots spoders out of her mouth angry.

As the five fallen appear, Yofiel curtsies to them. She senses the emotions, mixed as they are.

Why, if Maya is the one apparently who put the final twist into making the dinosaurs so much more canny, are they feeling sympathy for her?

"We are pleased to have carried out your request, and that you allowed us to do so," she opens. "We thank heaven we have survived this gauntlet, and you have now rejoined us." She nods with a measure of gratitude. Then Yofiel holds up a finger, as if to introduce another topic.

"Perhaps Maya is mad," Yofiel says to the spirits. "But she also is, to borrow Marest's word, complicit in the deaths of close to a hundred people. We can assure you she is continuing in this pathway, as some of her beasts attacked Cloudhaven again a couple of days ago - with the monstrologer among them, leading them to do so - yet she disavows any responsibility for their actions.

"The work of this place, and the guidance of Maya, condemned my dear younger brother to death. If I come across Maya again, most likely I shall endeavor to end her life, before the lives of more people are brought to an end through her perversions of nature.

"If you have any response to this, we will listen. A man may love his dog, but if the dog goes mad, the master should put it down, before it harms others further."

She pauses, then addresses them by name. "Taim Crowsky, Silvyr Norro, Oznif Moonface Mayer, Shanaera Wysagella, and Ellie Clayhangar, I think you have shown clear signs of grief and repentence. But how would you have us handle your affection for Maya?"

Grim keeps an eye on the exit and only furtively watches the burning of the notes despite the appearance of the spirits. 'At least we won't have to go back up to report,' he says quietly.

He has nothing to say to the spirits or add to what has been said. Let Gargul set them straight if he wishes to.

In reply to Ezekiel, Grim says "Maya fed them doggie treats and they sat there, wagging their tails and mouth's wide open for each treat, completely oblivious. They were, for all practical purposes, Monstrologers themselves, as their actions and intent fit the Monstrologer creed, even if their intentions were for the good."

From the final image it would appear that the increase in intellege was sudden, like a massive jump that did not seem to be driven by anything that was being done to them. It was like some sort of evolutionary leap took place immediately and collectively to the existing subjects, not so much the result of what was done with them by the Facility staff.

The spirits linger for a moment as the party discusses but you can see they are fading. When the group speaks of Maya there is a sense of confusion and regret but not anger. When Yofiel mentions her being part of an attack the sense of confusion only grows, they clearly dont know anything about that.

The final feelings and images come when Grim talks of monsterologists and that the spirits were the same as them. There is a flash of annoyance. An image, clearly from their past lives as adventures. A wizard casts a fireball and it burns some undead. A different wizard casts a fireball and it ignites part of a small village sending people running. As that last image fades the spirits fade more and their last offering is a feeling of gratitude that their task was completed and their time here is done.

Siolo sits and ponders on the visions and feelings of the spirits.

The leap to intelligence seems to be still unexplained, he thought. Was there an outside factor or force that caused the leap? Was it a byproduct of everything else?

He even wondered if such thoughts were even worth thinking about.

Grim grunts back "Two things concern ME! That Maya actually DID the enhancement to their intelligence right under their noses and they were oblivious to it and you, Ezekiel, underestimate Monstrologers. Maya's little pets we killed a few weeks ago are proof enough that she has gained enough influence over the Thunder Gods, and the Greater Thunder God out there guarding the entrance is a bonus. However the Thunder Gods in here are not the ones that destroyed Cloudhaven, although they may have taken part in it. The Thunder God that destroyed the gates to the Keep was too big to fit in any of these cages or even make it through these halls. Even the Thunder God you call a T-Rex is too big. Those came from the Monstrologers' own private herd. Maya used these dupes to gain enough insight to get things going then used some special power to cause that leap across the Intelligence chasm from animal intelligence to a higher level."

He then points his thick index finger at Ezekial then grins a wide grin, "At least that's the way I see it."

Colt silently absorbs the council's last images. Then he listens to his companions, head bowed.

Finally the young man squares his shoulders and lifts his head. "I think Grim is mostly right. The council's gone to rest eternal. It doesn't matter how or exactly when the dinosaurs got smart. Maya's the problem. She's their boss now and she'll kill us and all of Cloudhaven if we don't-- stop her. There's no easy way to find her, but we can be pretty sure she'll attack again.
We should get back. "

"Farewell, Cloudhaven Council. May you find blessings in the Lands of Rest."

There were a few last-minutes nuggets of understanding to gather out of that last interaction. Yofiel tucks them away for future pondering.

"We ought to consider the paths they took which at the time they deemed wise, yet learned to their chagrin were otherwise," she comments.

"All right. We are alive. We have fulfilled our promise. We need to see about the lower exit. When we find it, we need to consider whether to use it for our journey back, or ascend the inside passage to return the way we came."

She takes up the sturdy travois. "I can drag this myself, Grim, so long as it is not too heavily laden."

"So, downward, now?" she asks the group, taking a few steps toward the exit, then pausing to see if others follow.

The party bids farewell to the council. Ezekiel and Siolo wonder if it was really Mayas work that increased the dinosaurs intelligence. Grim and Colt are worried about her influence over the dinosaurs and the damage she might do to Cloudhaven with them if not stopped.

Yofiel makes her way toward the exit to head downward. Colt agrees.

Kaze having watched the interplay between the spirits and what Grim had to say, agrees with Grim. "Whether or not the Council had their hands in all of this, they were complicit in working with Maya, and then not seeing her as an enemy, or having done anything wrong. The images they showed, a wizard destroying undead, as undead only seek to slay the living, at least to my limited knowledge of them, was a good act. The village catching on fire, the wizard could have easily stopped the fire, but that's not the vision they wanted to sho us, only the damage. I'm ready to leave this place. So much death and destruction is around us, I need a bath to wash the stink off myself, a very long hot bath."

"Don't get me wrong, Grim, Maya is a problem, and one that needs to be dealt with sooner rather than later. I'm simply wondering if she is THE problem, or if there is something even worse behind her."

"Though another thought occurs to me as well: the council's recollections do not jive with the vile woman we encountered. Did Maya so thoroughly deceive the council and hide or true intentions? That would be the simplest answer, though deception is not a typical skill amongst druids. Mayhap she was changed as the thunder lizards were, either by her own hand as part of her experiments or by some outside force. In the end it may matter little: as I said, she is a threat and needs to be dealt with, but is she the cause of all our problems or just the start of them?"

"Some thirty years ago I heard of a fellow named Graeff. He had a sanctuary, a sanitarium, up in the foothills of some mountains not too far off from here, I think along the east side of the Scab," Yofiel says as they head toward what the map indicates is the exit. "He was said to have a deft hand at working with people who had gone mad, in some cases restoring them to sanity. I know not whether he yet lives, and, if so, is he still engaged in a similar activity? He was considered to be one of the Wold's foremost healers of those with mental disturbances. If he is still about, I do not know if we could somehow get Maya to spend time with him."

As Grim takes another half of the travois, he assures Ezekiel that, according to the Prophesy given to his Shaman, there is a greater power involved here and Maya is just a servant. "But be assured also that, if she is mad, she is Mad as all Monstrologers are Mad, and that this Madness isn't curable by a chit-chat with some old sweet-talker. It may be curable with a Wish spell, but it's easier to chop their heads off and put them on a pole that get the power of such magic.

With the back half of the laden travois in hand, he says forcefully "Someone with a yappy dog get up front and scout!"
