The party continues their discussion as they begin to descend to the final level of the complex. Kaze is ready to get out of the facility; all the death and destruction is making him feel dirty. Ezekiel worries that Maya might not be the only power at play. Yofiel suggests that Maya could benefit from therapy, and Colt agrees. Siolo believes that the party doesn’t have the full picture yet. Grim mentions a prophecy known to his people; he doesn’t think therapy will be as effective as decapitation in dealing with Maya. Dapple and Marest move with the group but don’t contribute to the conversation.
You make your way through the winding tunnel of the natural cave system within the plateau, following a the terrain’s natural decline. Other than the noise your party is making, the only sound is the occasional drip of condensation on the rocks above. While not cold, the air is cooler than the humid jungle.
Eventually, you come to a solid steel door. It looks a bit damaged, but has been effectively shut.

Despite Grim's verbal jab at Fogbank, Colt is happy to have been given the scouting task. He moves along in front of the party watching carefully, and Foggy pads right beside him, listening and sniffing.
Colt stops at the door and examines it closely. "This door's not as damaged as the others were," he observes. He sniffs at something that tickles his nostrils. "Hmmm. Smells like a barn."

Yofiel quietly signals to Grim, and sets down the travois gently. She walks to the door. She listens near where the door joins with the frame.
After a moment, she steps away and speaks quietly, "I hear something moving out there. I smell hay and animal waste."
She looks over the door, and observes how it is secured. She tries to figure out whether the door can be exited and then closed somehow from the outside, while resetting the inside locking or blocking mechanisms from the outside.
She says quietly, "Let's go back around the last corner or two before we talk more. If I can hear the other side, those on the other side may hear us." She walks back at least a hundred yards, waving people on to join her. For the moment, she leaves the travois where she set it down.
Once suitably far enough away with the others, she speaks not quite so softly, but definitely not loudly. "Hay is there because a person put it there. Animals may eat standing hay, but they do not gather and pile it in alcoves. It could be anyone. A well-defended caravan passing this way, and stopping to rest. It could be the druid beastmaster we've been talking about.
"As much as I would like to satisfy my curiosity, I think we have two options, the first which I favor, but the second may work.
"First: We ascend through the caverns, and walk past the sleeping t-rex, and put distance between us, then find a place to rest up and regain our spells and such. And from there return to Cloudhaven. That is my preference.
"Second option: We go back to the lab area and rest up. When we feel ready, we return to the lower door, open it, and be ready as we can be for whatever is on the other side. Perhaps we will want simply to slam the door shut with us somewhat safe inside. But keep in mind, if we do this, likely the huge guardian of the doorway will have awakened from his meal-induced slumber, and exiting from the top could by that time be deadly.
"Another argument against the second option? How can we ensure the doorway can be secured against whoever or whatever coming in and up through the complex, if we exit to the jungle? Eating the corpses. Further ransacking the pathways."
Having laid out those two options, herself favoring the first, Yofiel asks, "What do you all think?"
Ezekiel (BrianW) - AC 17/13/14; HP 31/31 Wednesday April 24th, 2024 3:35:19 PM

Yofiel (Kim McCoy), female elf bard 4th AC 16/16/14 HP: 29/29 Wednesday April 24th, 2024 4:25:33 PM
"It's been about five, maybe six hours since we left it, Ezekiel," Yofiel responds. "From what we were told, it should still be asleep. If we rest and wait another eight or more hours, then chances are better it will have woken up. And we can always peek out before we venture out."
Marest attempts to perceive if opening the door is safe. (Perception Check: = 1d20+10 = 26) With that, Marest learns two things, which she shares with the group:
Marest explains to the group her findings:
"1) You pick up the sweet, earthy scent of hay and the foul smell of feces, & 2) You hear movement on the other side of the door."
Marest, after sharing this information with the group in a whisper-tone conversation, "wonders if there is a barnyard on the other side?!"

Dapple [AC 18; HP 28/28] (Kathy) d20+5=19 ; Wednesday April 24th, 2024 7:11:12 PM
Dapple frowns. "Does hay grow here naturally? I wouldn't think a jungle would produce much in the way of hay. Which means that the hay was probably brought here and left outside the door. Which suggests that whoever brought the hay is feeding animals. Which further suggests that the animals are not meat-eaters." She sighs. "Of course, it's likely that any plant-eaters would have been devoured by now, so it probably is meat-eaters out there."

Downward - DM Jess- Maps and documents Thursday April 25th, 2024 10:08:15 AM
From beyond the steel door, the party gets a whiff of animal waste and hay, and once those who notice it point it out, everyone can all hear something moving beyond the closed door. While you do catch a whiff of some mildew and mold, the hay smells surprisingly fresh.
Yofiel suggests either retreating the way you came or, at the very least, resting a bit. Marest and Kaze speculate that beyond the door there might be what remains of the animals used to feed dinos, humans, or both. Dapple (in a chain of very Vezzini reasoning) comes to a few conclusions 1) the hay must have been brought in because it is not indigenous to the region, 2) any of the herbivores that were eating it are probably not still alive.
Ezekiel worries that the T-Rex has slept off the berries you doused him with. Siolo is concerned that there might be another T-Rex guard at the bottom. Grim agrees with Ezekiel and asserts that he wants to confirm the cave’s rear exit. Yofiel agrees, as does Colt .
There are two locking mechanisms on the door, so that it can be locked from either side--to both keep in and keep out, you assume. Based on your perception scores from the last round of posts, you can tell that the door is locked from the other side. However, the locking mechanism does not seem to be very complex and should be easy enough to pick if someone has the right tool and expertise, a bit more difficult to pick if you don’t.
The consensus, from those who have weighed in, seems to be to proceed--with caution. Do you plan to take a rest first?
Yofiel (Kim McCoy), female elf bard 4th AC 16/16/14 HP: 29/29 Thursday April 25th, 2024 1:15:28 PM
"So, we take a few minutes to prepare, then we open the door, if we are going to do this," Yofiel suggests. "Why? That keeps open the option of leaving from the top."
"Ezekiel has his wand. We have missiles. Grim has his polearm. We aim to see what is there. If circumstances allow us to explore a bit without huge risk, then good. If not, we save our lives, and retreat.
"What do you all think? How should we prepare?"

Kaze adds, "I've got my blade and shield. My bet is that whatever is behind the door is food for those who were here. Why else would there be fresh hay?"
Ezekiel (BrianW) - AC 17/13/14; HP 31/31 Thursday April 25th, 2024 3:45:30 PM
"I can also try to blind whatever creature is outside the door," says Ezekiel. "And cover it in sparkly stuff in case it's invisible."
Ezekiel will ready glitterdust against any unknown animal or other creature taking a hostile action towards the group.
Marest realizing that the group has not had rest in a very long time, coupled with the belief that the Guard T-Rex is probably awake by now, suggests to the group that, "Now is as good time as any to have a short rest or at least a 2-hour meditation. I realize the group is top-heavy with martial classes, but those of us who cast spells need rest. If we do not rest, we will be cannon fodder for the next encounter! And as for healing, you are as good as dead if, we that cast healing, do not rest. Your call!" Marest says and she points around the room.
Yofiel (Kim McCoy), female elf bard 4th AC 16/16/14 HP: 29/29 Thursday April 25th, 2024 8:42:14 PM
"Marest, we fed the t-rex about 5 to 6 hours ago. From what we were told, I am thinking the minimum time the guardian dino up top will sleep is 8 hours. It will likely take us about 15 to 20 minutes to hike back up, if we do not stop along the way," Yofi responds to Marest's repeated request, and tries to counter her surmise. "Maybe the t-rex will sleep longer, like 12 hours. Maybe 24. If you want to stay back as some of us take a quick look, now, then do so. I am not willing yet to give up our relatively safe window in which to exit from above - that is, in less than 8 hours.
"It was suggested you get in your rest time as some of us skimmed through the documentation. You chose instead to offer to join in the reading, for which I am grateful, especially considering your growing alchemical skills. Yet, again, feel free stay back in order to mitigate the risk to yourself. Start your meditation if you choose. But judging from our earlier forays, returning through the jungle below may be high risk. Traveling from up top - we better know what's there. We can let you know what we find outside."
Another thought occurs to the bard. "It is slightly possible that whoever is on the other side may prove friendly. We need to take care not to instantly attack, if we can avoid doing so. And ready to attack, if avoidance is not a good option." =======
Yofiel says to the rest of the group, "I'm ready. Two or three of you still have about 30 minutes left of the protection against poisons that Marest provided you - Grim, Kaze, and Siolo, I think?"
She waits to see who will try to unlock the mechanism.

He draws his falchion and points to the locks, "Someone get to picking."
Downward - DM Jess- Maps and documents Friday April 26th, 2024 8:06:42 AM Yofiel asks the group how they plan to prepare. Kaze has his blade and shield; he suspects that they are going to find food behind the door. Ezekiel offers to blind or glitter bomb any hostile creatures on the other side of the door. Marest advocates for a short rest--otherwise there might not be much the spellcasters can do. Yofiel argues that they should press forward without a rest and asks Colt to try to pick the lock. Grim speculates about the implications of the hay’s freshness.

"If that jiggling you doing don't work, I've got other methods to get this door open,' he comments.

Though Colt doubts himself, with the help of Marest, Dapple, and Yofiel, he is able to easily pick the lock.
Kaze and Ezekiel prepare for the fight, while Siolo contemplates what to do. Grim examines the door. The damage seems to be primarily from the other side, though it is dented on this one, as though smashed against the rock wall. The door is unusually large, about 15 feet wide, and the hinges are on the side where the party is currently standing.
Once the door is open, the smell of hay and feces is stronger. The door seems to open up into another hallway (about 60 feet), and you can see light at the end of it. Those of you with darkvision can just make out that toward the end of the hall, there seems to be a storage nook with bales of hay.

As Colt had asked what kind of dinosaur, Yofi says, "Without looking at it, we cannot know for certain, I think, Colt. But since it eats lots of hay - it likely is a herbivore. Not that dealing with a herbivore is safe. They may not eat you, but may bite you if they think you a threat."
"Perhaps, Grim, she has done so, and perhaps not. I think we should go check up above and see whether the guardian slumbers or not. If so, we sneak past. If not, we retire within to rest and recover, then decide."
Tactical Retreat - DM Jess- Maps and documents Tuesday April 30th, 2024 9:45:05 AM
After Dapple and [Colt] hear the dinos, the party, at Yofiel’s urging, makes a tactical retreat. Eziekel is certain that he heard other members of his party talking as well. After telling the group that she heard a female voice, Marest speculates that there might be training going on. Kaze guesses that the voice they heard is Maya, and Colt agrees. Siolo suggests using a similar tactic that the party did against the oozes, perhaps withdrawing to where a large dino can’t fit. Grim wonders about the coincidence of Maya being here while the party has been exploring; he also reminds the group that she has access to powerful magic. He suggests a rest and then possibly enlisting the help of Rothlorien. Yofiel believes that there might be herbivores down there.
Grim draws on his knowledge of dinosaurs to try to identify the beast based on its roar. It sounds similar to a deinonychus, but not quite.
If you are closing the door, please provide a stealth check to see how quietly you do so. You retreat up the tunnel a ways, and don't believe that you can be heard. Yofiel proposes a plan: see if the t-rex is still dosing, if so, try to sneak past; if not, take a rest here.
It seems like you have some decisions to make as a group. Does the party want to take a short rest? Long rest? If you are taking a rest, where would you like to do so? Are you going to get help? Check on the t-rex?

"Yes, let's check on Rexie and then decide what to do," Dapple says.
Yofiel has some oil. She oils the hinges of the big door. Having assisted Colt (with Marest's help) on the unlocking, she looks over the mechanisms. If there are spots where it could help, she adds a bit of oil. And, as the door is closed, she takes care to try to help muffle the closing sounds (Stealth: 19)
Once that task is accomplished, she joins the others in heading back to the laboratory / cages area.
"Sure, let's get going. Oh - did anyone check the containers in this room to see if there is something we may have overlooked? Let's take five minutes or so and do that. Otherwise, I'm ready."
She quickly joins others to check baskets, chests, barrels to see if there is anything useful. Just in case, she has detect magic going to discern any auras in the vicinity.
When done, and as the group gets ready to head back into the slaughter cavern, she cautions, "We know there is at least one or more of the slime crawlers inside that large carcass. Do we stay away from that, or try to take out the last ones?" She'll go with whatever the party decides on that matter.
Otherwise, on the way back to the top, Yofiel is willing to steadily travel without too many pauses. Her bow is nocked, and she carries it in her left hand.
