Locks and Traps…

DM Bob and Carla - ”Aftermath…”
Wednesday May 15th, 2024 11:31:29 PM

The three story tower sits atop an isolated crag with the cloud shrouded red hills behind it and the forest growing on either side of the Coldstream River before it. Low hanging clouds now filter the sunlight, and a mist rising from the river contributes to the forbidding atmosphere.

The party of heroes are alive - though spread over the different levels of the tower. Three ogres and an ogre mage lie dead at the base of the tower, while two more ogre bodies have been left on the parapet of the third level. The remaining enemy have fled.

Six, maybe seven hours of daylight remain followed by the dim light of gloaming, before full dark. There are hurts to tend, bodies to deal with, a tower to explore…

(OOC: we are no longer in combat…)

Thursday May 16th, 2024 6:56:23 AM

With no one to pursue, Onesimos moves to gather all the Luck Makers on the first floor of the Tower to discuss the next moves. And with everyone gathered, he sends healing energy in a burst for each of them. (14 heal to all Luck Makers)

"We may be camping here for several days, so let's first search and dispose of the bodies, then search the Tower from the ground floor up. I don't expect to find much, but that doesn't mean we won't find anything, and the smallest clue may help later on. And I expect we'll need to find a way into the lower levels, too."

If everyone is agreeable, Bennin leads a search of the ogre and ogre magi bodies then rolling them down a steep hill will help not attract animals and vermin, and mage-like prestidigitation to clean up any remaining blood. As each body is pushed over, the cleric gives a small prayer hoping they have a just meeting and journey with Gargul, and that their souls find the meaning of love in the Lands of Unrest or Rest.

The druid stays in bear form, the better to move bodies. Besides, it is comfortable to relax into nature for a time!

After an ogre is searched, Bear-Jasper rolls the two off the parapet, then lumbers down to the ground and rolls each like a log to the designated steepest side of the hill.

The little mage isn't much use moving something as big as a dead ogre, but he will cast Detect Magic when we loot, er, I mean when we examine the bodies. He will also cast Prestidigitation to clean up the blood. Several times.

"Yech. What a mess. I'm impressed that one ogre was able to climb outta that pit.

"While that went ok, it didn't go as well as it coulda. I shoulda waited til Makis used his spell to look around.
Thanks for the healing and the shielding Benni."

Once things are tidied up, he'll fly around in and out of the tower using Detect Magic to see if there's anything to detect.

DM Bob and Carla - ”Aftermath…”

Onesimos assembles the Luck Makers in order to discuss the party’s next moves. Whilst everyone is gathered together, he channels the divine power of Flower and provides healing to any injured companions. The fastidious cleric is worried about contagion and attracting vermin, and establishes a plan for dealing with the bodies of the dead. Makis voices his concern that the survivors of the rout might return with reinforcements, and suggests posting guards.

Jasper-bear and Eadric manoeuvre the bodies of the dead with help from Beatrix. Having figured out the ogre mage might be something other than what it appears, the well read centaur takes a better look, and sees past the disguise in which it’s clothed itself to it’s true nature - an Oni - an evil spirit come to the Material Plane and clad in living flesh—in this case, that of a brutish ogre. She’s sure she’s read somewhere that they are attracted to living in the cold hills, and if not solitary, will pair up with another of their kind, and possibly work with a small patrol of ogres. Most importantly, they have the ability to regenerate, even after sustaining massive damage - unless destroyed by acid or fire - much like trolls!

Before the bodies are rolled off the crag on which the tower sits, Snark takes a look at the gear on the bodies, and is able to identify:

1 large chain shirt - 200 GP
1 large great sword - 100 GP
1 large composite longbow (+7str) - 1600 GP
5 large great clubs - 50 GP
20 large javelins - 40 GP
5 large hide armor - 150 GP
5 vials of CMW - 1500 GP
Misc. coins totalling 100 GP

Urist, having been invisible and incommunicado with her friends until the very end of the siege, thanks Benni for the gift of healing, and along with Makis, Snark and Beatrix goes exploring.

The more she looks about, the more the dwarf is convinced there is no dungeon or tunnel under the tower, nor secret passages however she discovers some intriguing brickwork inside the fireplace on the third floor that might warrant further study.

The furnishings inside the tower are crudely made, and of recent provenance. Any evidence of the original owner’s furnishings are long gone - either looted by adventurers and villains - or disintegrated with the passage of time. Makis finds a chest under a bed on the second floor.

Beatrix finds some paperwork that looks like unfinished correspondance.

The blue haired gnome doesn’t pick up any magical auras, however he does note the walls of the lower levels (1 and 2) bear quite a bit of graffiti!

Benni opens his bag of holding and, making sure that sharp objects are wrapped to prevent tearing, stuffs all of what Snark finds inside, less anything magic if someone wants it.

"OK, we have an unfinished letter, can't be from the old wizard since nothing made of wood has survived a hundred years, so who would an ogre be writing to?"

"We also have a chest and some brickwork. Let's make sure we have at least two LuckMakers together at any one time, just in case."

Benni himself is most interested in the letter and asks to read over Beatrix' shoulder.

DM Bob and Carla - ”Searching the tower for clues”
Sunday May 19th, 2024 9:52:57 PM

Isaac is concerned that the escaped villains might have absconded with that which the party seeks, but on second thought it would appear the Oni/Ogre Mages and their Ogre minions were surprised by the appearance of the Luck Makers and escaped with what weapons they could collect in their haste, and the clothes on their backs. The ever cautious paladin suggests watches be put in place while the heroes explore the tower. Eadric volunteers to guard the front door, whilst Luna circles the tower and Ellashee secures herself on a thick iron rod with a hook at the end that projects out from the wall on the third floor - high above the front door.

Warned by Beatrix regarding the true nature of the dead Ogre Mage, Isaac and Jasper volunteer to cremate the remains. Before they do so, Snark identifies any valuables, and Onesimos carefully stores them for transportation.

Makis finds the chest is not trapped, but it is locked. The chest and its contents weighs about 25lbs so the elf is able to manoeuvre it out from under the bed on the second floor, down to the main level.

Snark, Makis and Onesimos are all interested in the correspondence discovered by Beatrix, however only those who comprehend Giant are able to read it! One document is a missive from someone named Murga - demanding to know why the trading post at the end of the valley has not yet been taken, and the valley secured. A partly written reply lies next to it, describing the uncanny ability of the occupants of the settlement to fight off their night-time raids - as if by magic! However, a new plan is being developed - and they will not fail!

The graffiti is in several languages and ranges from simple personal marks and messages to declarations of religious or political allegiance. Some of it (in particular disparaging comments about gnomes and dwarfs written in giant) is fairly recent, however some of it (’Get to know me, Domi! -J. The Brave’, and a carving of the all-seeing eye, Gargul’s High Woldian symbol, underneath which is scratched: ’Embrace Death as the door to rebirth’) are of much older provenance. One message, possibly the oldest, reads: ”Reginald Fennus and the Red Hill Raiders were here first!”. Scratching away a bit of moss below it reveals a battlemented tower with the WLA symbol in High Woldian.

Urist is pretty sure there’s something special about the brickwork at the back of the fireplace on the third floor, and calls out to his friends for a second opinion. Snark answers his summons, and has a good look. Like the dwarf, the gnome notices that the mortar surrounding the stones at the back of the fireplace isn’t the same as the mortar used elsewhere in the tower, however he also notices there are many tiny holes spaced evenly around the periphery of the back wall of the fireplace, along with a cunning little three dimensional rendering of a crescent moon on one of the bricks - placed exactly in the centre of the hearth wall.

DM Bob and Carla - ”Locks and traps”  d20+10=11 d3=1
Monday May 20th, 2024 11:53:06 PM

Beatrix and Snark translate the contents of the letters for their friends. Concerned that ogres in the valley mean bad things for the locals, they plan to share what they’ve learned with the folks at Bryson’s Rest.

Benni laments that the party’s composition doesn’t include a lock or trap specialist as the Luck Makers try to solve the puzzle of the suspicious stonework at the back of the fireplace on the third floor, and the not so mysterious chest that Makis has hauled to the first floor.

The fireplace on the third floor…

Snark and Makis tackle the secret of the fireplace while Jasper and Urist look on. Unusual brickwork, holes around the periphery, a little three dimensional rendering of a crescent moon on one of the bricks. The witch comes to the same conclusion as the mage - it’s a trap! Even though it’s old, it’s probably still quite deadly - and the moon could be the switch! (DC 15 Disable Device)

Anxious to get on with things, Snark summons an unseen servant to do his bidding, and from a distance directs it to tinker about the stonework. The invisible shapeless force is unable to manipulate the switch, but its proximity and activities trigger the trap! A hailstorm of poison darts flies out to strike all creatures within a 10 ft area of the fireplace! (Atk hit AC 11 (nat 1!) ranged attack, 1 dmg plus bloodroot poison (Fort DC vs 12, or take -1 Con, -1 Wis) Likely only the invisible minion is struck, since the gnome had the sense to warn his companions.

Now, what was the trap protecting?

The chest on the ground floor…

Having been advised that the chest is not trapped, but simply locked, - and unable to find a key Isaac volunteers to smash the lock! (OOC: Don’t worry about attack rolls, just roll dmg for the hits!)

Having started things off, Snark waits to see what happens next. Beatrix speculates there might be a hidey-hole, encouraging her companions to further exploration. Teased by Jasper, Urist confirms Benni’s hunch that the moon brick is likely the key to disabling the trap. The elf leaps into action, reaching into the firebox, and giving the half moon a twist. The cleric hears a ‘click’ as the trap is disabled and the stone tumbles into his hand - revealing a dark cubby about 6x6 inches wide/tall - but deep enough that it’s too dark to see clearly to the back of the recess.

Makis volunteers to morph into a cat, if needed.

On the top floor…

Makis sheds a little light on the situation, before transforming into a house-cat. The concentration of so much light in a small space gives Benni a pretty good idea of what’s inside the cubby. As he reaches to retrieve the items, his curious little brother gets in the way, bracing front paws against the brick, and trying to peer inside the opening.

Leaning comfortably against a far wall, Beatrix amd Jasper watch as Benni retrieves three items: a rolled parchment tied with a faded ribbon, a leather-bound book, and a velvet bag of indeterminate colour containing something very heavy and somewhat larger than a man’s clenched fist! The cleric doesn’t spot any markings inside the cubby. There’s a light coating of ash dust, but nothing else.

Urist uses a cantrip to remove the ash dust from the items and those gathered ‘round can make out the name T. Azodall embossed on the book. Snark is asked to scan for magical auras. He creates some additional light, and has a good look. With all the light created by the magickers, there’s not a single shadowy corner on the third floor! The rolled parchment and the book do not detect as magic, however whatever is inside the velvet bag gives off a shockingly strong, nearly overwhelming aura. The gnome had previously scanned for magic, as had the witch, however it’s likely their spell was unable to penetrate the thick stones of the secret storage area.

On the ground floor…

Eadric waits for Isaac to take a swing or two at the locked chest. The fighter might want to give the lock a bash himself!

More seriously, he hands parchment over to Snark and book up to Beatrix. "I think we should read these closely before considering to open the velvet bag: there is no telling if it the object we seek or if it is a means to track it. If it is actually there and 'always on', it could be... messy... to open unawares."

The elf is patient, and waits for his friends to learn more.

DM Bob and Carla - ”The Notebook”
Thursday May 23rd, 2024 11:55:55 PM

On the bottom floor…

Isaac takes a swing, but worried he might damage the contents of the chest, he doesn’t use all of his strength. He nicks the lock, but it holds firm - for the moment. Eadric takes a poke at the lock, and finishes what his paladin friend started. The lock springs apart, and the chest reveals its contents: coins and gems equivalent to 900 GP!

On the top floor of the tower…

Benni lifts Makis onto his lap, as he takes a seat, tailor fashion on the floor - the velvet bag with it’s magical contents on the floor in front of him - while Beatrix and Snark take a quick look at the parchment and book. Returning to elven form, Makis joins those studying the documents. (OOC: there is nothing else to see in the cubby)

The parchment bound in ribbon is written in legalize - the specialized language of the legal profession - but since it’s based on Common our heroes are able to translate the text as a property deed, transferring ownership of a small parcel of land in the Red Hills close to the Culverwwod to one Dallry Torazo - who’s signature is affixed to the document. The co-ordinates of the site match those of the land around the red stone tower.

The first dozen pages of the notebook are full of technical drawings accompanied by copious written notes. The drawings show versions of a six sided lantern, and grow more refined from the first pages to the later ones. The notes pertain to metals used and how sigils are incorporated, along with other components, and spells, related to anti-magic shields, arcane sight, true seeing, etc.

Later pages appear to be a diary of sorts. The author appears to be expressing regret at becoming embroiled in a side job that lead to some sort of trouble. There’s something about being contracted by a thieves guild to help them with locating and ‘acquiring’ an object, and how things turned sour once the object had been secured. How his ‘associates’ started turning up dead - tortured - their mutilated bodies dumped inthe Scar in the Nightmare Quarter.

There’s more…followed by some technical drawings…then more text…and so on. Flipping to the last few written pages reveals the shaky penmanship of an aged individual. The words…rambling…confused…communicating an old man’s fear of judgement in the afterlife.

Snark takes a break from the paperwork to consider the aura emanating from the object inside the velvet bag. Without a doubt - it’s conjuration!

Jasper doesn’t think the artefact they seek is in the bag sitting on the floor before Benni

The angle of the light coming through various openings in the tower indicate the progression of the day. The party can pack up their finds and head back to the relative security of the trading post - arriving a couple of hours after dark, or they can make camp in or around the tower. Either way, reading through the notebook and sorting through their discoveries will take some time.

Sunday May 26th, 2024 9:55:15 PM

Urist notes the first technical drawings are relevant to the item the party seeks - Azodall’s six sided magical lantern created from the lenses of Beholder eyes. However, it appears that once the wizard had achieved success with this item, he moved on to other magical projects. Some sketches are for mechanical and magical traps, but others appear to be ideas for vehicles like an exotic ‘ship’ held aloft by a massive ballon, and propelled by a magical engine. Another is a wheeled chair that can be propelled by turning the two back wheels with one’s hands, but it also has a box with steering mechanisms and a magical propulsion system.

Snark gets a sense that what’s inside the bag isn’t dangerous per se, but that having it in his possession was a factor that lead to the wizard Azodall’s sudden disappearance from Plateau City. The journal may contain additional information. The greenmage directs his unseen servant to extract the contents from the velvet bag.

Beatrix watches in trepidation, along with Benni, Makis, Jasper - and the recently arrived Eadric and Isaac, bearing a chest full of coins and gems - as Snark’s minion does the gnome’s bidding.

The drawstring of the bag seems to part by itself and a multifaceted red gem floats through the air - until it is plucked from the invisible servant’s hands by (a visible) Urist!

Spellbound, Snark senses the magical aura of the gem and the school of magic: Conjuration - possibly some sort of summoning magic?

DM Bob and Carla - ”The red gem”
Monday May 27th, 2024 10:04:03 PM

Snark is frustrated that his attempts to identify the item did not work - but then he did so ‘without touching the thing’. Though skilled (Spellcraft 39 acknowledged) in the art of casting spells, identifying magic items, and identifying spells as they are cast - the little mage has not yet had the opportunity to thoroughly examine the object - it having been pulled from it’s velvet confinement by the unseen servant, then collected by Urist. Any magical means Snark uses reveals the gem itself has no magical properties, but that it is under the effects of a magical spell. Without having been present when the magic was invoked, he can only speculate that the rare red gem is an important component of a powerful conjuration spell.

Benni holds his breath, while Beatrix is just glad she hasn’t been teleported somewhere or blown up.

Eadric sets down the chest filled with coins and gems, and points at the red gem held by the troubadour, asking for an explanation.

Makis thinks the red gem might be dangerous - and voices his concern aloud.

Beatrix wonders if the gem held by the troubadour is affecting her - or if it’s the dwarf just being her regular odd self.

Benni repositions himself and stays alert.

Snark pulls out his pipe and lights it, musing over what he has learned thus far, his unseen servant silent and invisible waiting nearby.

The ever practical Isaac is not impressed by the gem, but does give it a glance in order to detect the presence (or absence) of evil. The paladin doesn’t detect evil. He doesn’t detect anything! Like the greenmage earlier, he doesn’t sense the gem is dangerous by or in itself - but he feels it is distracting the group from their purpose, and should be ‘put away’.

Urist informs the assembled Luck Makers that she is engaged in conversation with a prince who wants rescuing, before returning her attention to the gem. Despite her behaviour to date, the troubadour has a pretty good sense of etiquette - at least when it comes to dealing with aristocrats - and makes respectful enquiries of the noble, whilst volunteering the services of her companions!

Makis’ active mind forms a theory as he watches the dwarf transfixed by the gem she is holding. He share’s his thoughts…and his magical aspirations, with his companions - before warning the troubadour to be wary of deception.

Jasper isn’t so sure she’s on board with Urist volunteering her services!

As his skeptical friends look on, Urist asks her questions. She hears a warm, velvety, male voice in her head: ’you may address me as Prince Alaric. I have been unjustly incarcerated within the facets of this gem for centuries by the enemies of my people. If you and your friends truly wish to be of service, then I will ensure you are compensated handsomely for assisting in my liberation!’

DM Bob and Carla - ”Puzzles and teasers”

Considering the lateness of the day Onesimos makes plans to overnight in the tower. Going about the routine of setting up camp, the cleric mentally assembles pieces of the puzzle. Could it be that Azodall had been working with a thieves guild to steal the gem, and on learning what it was had a change of heart?

Makis comes to a similar conclusion, though he believes the wizard may have had a hand in trapping whatever is inside the gem. The Bloodwitch suggests the party avoid interfering in a situation that is currently causing no problems but might do so as a result of such interference. Though a good student of history, the name ‘Prince Alaric’ draws a blank.

Concluding more information is needed before deciding the fate of the gem, Beatrix acknowledges Azodall’s Lantern is unlikely to be found in the tower.

Urist continues her charm offensive, smiling and interpreting for the party, before handing off the gem.

Jasper raises a brow and voices her skepticism, but without actually touching the gem, she has to leave her questions for someone else to ask. She takes a quick turn on the parapet - and spots Luna circling the tower and Ellashee still secured comfortably on a thick iron rod with a hook at the end that juts out from the wall.

Eadric keeps a practiced eye on Snark when it’s the little magicker’s turn with the gem. The elder fighter doesn’t seem keen on talking artefacts!

The blue haired gnome wants to know what is going on with the gem, and won’t give up until he has answers! Accepting the gem from the troubadour, the multitasking greenmage addresses ‘Alaric’ in a manner guaranteed to set the noble’s back up, whilst teasing out the mystery of the gem’s magic. Snark confirms that an augmented casting of trap the soul has been used to force a creature’s life force (and it’s material body) into a gem. With the gem in his hands, the shockingly strong aura of magic on the gem nearly gives the small magicker a migraine. There is more at play here - the prison has been created by a powerful being bent on establishing an impenetrable barrier between the contents of the gem and what’s beyond its many faceted surface. The only failure of the magic is an avenue of communication if one is actually holding the gem, and the captive is willing.

In response to his questions Snark hears in his head a heavy *sigh*, then a languid voice responds: ”Prince Alaric…the Amdis family…my NAME is Alaric di Amdis.”. Then somewhat petulantly, ”I do not like you. I want the other one…”

The third floor of the tower - with its steeply pitched roof overhead and easy access to a wraparound crenelated parapet from which to observe the environs - seems as good a place as any to take refuge for the night.

Isaac decides to hold the Jem and asks the soul inside a few questions "Prince Alaric my Name is Isaac. I would like to ask you some questions. If you can what was the last date you can remember before your imprisonment? Where are you from? And What was the name of some of you family members? I have no idea how long you've been imprisoned or if your family still hold power. However I will look into freeing you as soon as possible.

Onesimos makes a trip to the ground and gathers firewood. Having a Bag of Holding is quite convenient for the task, and he plans to only have to go down once. He looks up to see the bats and Jasper keeping watch and does his own circuit of the tower to see if he is able to spot any differences in the woods or rocks below. (Perception: 27)

Back up to the third level, he places a semblance of a fire stack of wood in the hearth with the rest of the fuel in a stack nearby, and tries to use his flint and steel to light a fire. "Does anyone want tea with hard biscuit, dried fruit, and nuts?" The cleric only has preserved travel fare.

"Benni! 'hard biscuit, dried fruit, and nuts'? What nonsense is this?" asks Urist.

Reaching into her own bag of holding, she takes out a keg of ale and mugs for all. Then she takes a butchered and dressed cow from her pocket, chops off enough excellent cuts to feed everybody plus breakfast tomorrow, shrinks what's left of the cow, and stows it away. If there is a fireplace fit for roasting -- not splattered with the grease and bones of whatever people ogres eat -- and fuel enough as well, great. If not, then she pulls a campfire out of her pocket to use instead.

"Tonight we feast on beef and ale!"

When others have finished talking with the prince, Urist takes up the gem and resumes the conversation. She politely asks the prince for his tale. She also tells him that the party, which includes several officers of the WLA, found the gem searching for an artifact of a wizard, named Azodall, dead now this century past, and anything he can tell us about the wizard would be swell. Of course, she couches this in her fawning and polite way that she has learned is the proper tone to use with nobles.

DM Bob and Carla - ”A new day”
Thursday May 30th, 2024 11:50:18 PM

Folks pitch in to make the tower room comfortable and safe. Thanks to Onesimos there’s a cheerful fire in the fireplace, and thanks to Urist simple trail rations are joined by a fine ale and some well aged beef! Jasper offers up mushrooms - a treat for those who abstain from the consumption of meat and a perfect accompaniment for a steak.

Over dinner Beatrix suggests party members take turns with the gem during their watches. There is also the wizard’s journal, the ogres’ correspondence, and a treasure chest to deal with.

Snark and Eadric jest at the captive’s expense, while Isaac and Urist converse politely with the prisoner. Makis and Jasper contribute a few questions.

The Luck Makers learn that ‘the prince’ was tricked into his imprisonment long before the wizard gained possession of the gem. During the few conversations held with the wizard, Azodall was unsympathetic, and soon abandoned him. The prisoner is vague about the exact location of where he is from, referring to himself as ‘a child of the Wold’, but also referencing the Ellenean Peninsula. Surprising for someone who has been trapped in a gem for over two centuries, he is adamant that members of his family are still around - and likely looking for him! Isaac has never heard of the Amdis family. During his time with the exceedingly polite troubadour, Alaric di Amdis excuses himself: ”It’s been a trying day.”

Benni’s earlier reconnaissance did not reveal anything to disconcert the careful elf, and the watches - supplemented by the night loving familiars - pass an uneventful evening. Leftovers from the night before can be eaten cold or warmed up. Kit is packed, and space is found for whatever the party decides to take from the tower (please sort out and list who’s got what.)

It’s a new day, and the party is ready to go!

Morning dawns the same, and the cleric suggests going back to Bryson's Rest and speak with Brynyar Blackstone. "We can take divinations there, and perhaps find more information about the area. Certainly, Brynar needs to know of the plot against his trading post!"

Leaving the gem, book, and scroll for others to carry, Benni loads non-pointy things to sell in his Bag of Holding.

Makis complements the fire and the meal. I must admit that when I camp on my own I live a much more austere and meager existence. I am getting a strong feeling of dread about that gem. I'd like to ask that no one try to free the prince until we have had ample time to study it. I will ask my mistress about the item as well. Sunday June 2nd, 2024 9:09:37 PM

Everyone agrees that Brynyar and the folks at Bryson’s Rest should be alerted to the threat of a possible ogre attack, and decide returning the way they came is the most sensible thing to do.

Taking turns with the journal, Snark, Makis and Beatrix learn of Azodall’s life in the months leading to his disappearance from Plateau City. His dreams of building the magical items he invented limited by his modest earnings as a teacher, the wizard was easy prey when a band of thieves approached him offering coin for ‘a special project.’ The thieves had been contracted to steal a gem of inestimable value by a noble house. Once the gem was acquired, Azodall learned it was at the centre of a turf war between powerful crime families, and had second thoughts about turning it over. He hid it in a cubby in his apartment, until he could figure out what to do. When his ‘associates’ start turning up dead, he panicked. Determined to keep the gem from falling into the wrong hands, and worried that his part in the affair condemned him in the eyes of the good and the bad - he decides to ‘disappear’ - along with the gem.

The ‘prince’ inside the gem seems to pick and choose what questions he answers - avoiding the personal or anything that might reveal too much to the wrong person - when Jasper enquires quite politely about his life before imprisonment. When the druid looks inside the gem, her adeptness allows her to see past the distortion created by the facets of the stone. She perceives a slim, long haired creature with pointed ears somewhat resembling Onesimos or Makis. Urist gets the feeling that Alaric di Amdis is attempting to determine the party’s trustworthiness prior to making an overt request for the party’s help.

Isaac hopes the party doesn’t have to deal with thieves guilds (or criminals in general) when they return to the Big City.
*******
The Luck Makers sort themselves into their standard marching order and depart Azodall’s tower under a dark sky of low hanging clouds. Within the hour it starts to drizzle, soon after becoming a steady rain that drenches clothes and plasters hair and/or fur against the skin, limits visibility, and turns the dirt path underfoot to treacherous mud. The party trudge along single file, slowed by the conditions. About halfway to their destination, the path disappears at the waters edge, only to reappear on the other side. This time the crossing isn’t so easy, the stream being swollen by rainwater. Working together the party are able to manage a crossing to the other side without anyone getting swept away - and continue unmolested towards their destination.

After several very miserable hours the path widens to allow two or more to walk abreast, and the dark outline of the trading post can be seen through the precipitation. The tall form of the half-orc, wrapped in a hooded oilskin cloak stands sentry in her usual spot. Beyond the enclosure, a shadow on the porch of the inn manipulates a heavy object. There is the sudden flare of bright light revealing the face and form of Brynyar Blackstone, then the creak of a pulley as a large, colourful and wonderfully wrought lantern is hoisted up under the overhang at the apex of the roof - throwing shadows and light across the courtyard.

Urist, Jasper and Snarkspot the newly lit lantern hanging above the doors to the inn and recognize it as being exactly like the drawings in the wizard’s journal they retrieved from the hidey-hole in the tower fireplace - and conforming to the description of the artefact they seek. But, how did it come to be at the trading post?

Snark is confounded when his spells don’t work, however he suspects he’ll be able to confirm his suspicions once the lantern has been extinguished and he can examine it at his leisure.

At the entrance to the inn, Urist draws everyone’s attention to the lantern overhead. The troubadour is convinced it’s the artefact the party seeks!

Beatrix is incredulous, until she sees the light!

Eadric wonders how the party missed spotting the lantern the first time through Bryson’s Rest?

Onesimos feels sick at the thought of taking the lantern from the folks at the trading post.

Picking up on his brother’s distress, Makis asks for clarification. He wasn’t present when the arch-lich tasked the party with bringing the lantern back to the Abbey at Heranmar in order for him to channel the energy of the nexus through the anti-magic artefact, and permanently seal the malfunctioning gateways!

Jasper shares the cleric’s scruples, and turns her mind to finding a solution.

DM Bob and Carla - ”the ‘Lucky Lamp’”
Wednesday June 5th, 2024 11:45:30 PM

Urist, Jasper, Isaac and Beatrix discuss the ogre problem with Captain Landsman who confirms that he and his patrol have been after a band of ogres who have been harassing caravans along the trade route. He is happy to learn the party has reduced their numbers, and effectively evicted them from the tower. He accepts the correspondence from the centaur, then asks a few questions regarding the condition of the tower. ”If it’s beyond repair, we could tear it down in order to discourage the ogres…however, if it could be repaired, we could add it to the chain of towers running along the boarder of the Scab. Station a regular watch in the valley, and provide a line of defence for the trading post and those using the trading routes.”

Deferring Benni until after the evening rush, Brynyar will join the party at their table when the food has been cleared and mugs refilled. ”You been looking for the Lucky Lamp? The swarthy dwarf will chuckle, then tell the story told him by his father: ”after gradpappy’s time, when me pappy was running the place, an adventuring group came down through the valley saying they’d discovered an abandoned wizard’s tower and ransacked the place. They put up at the Rest for the night and decided to celebrate. Got drunk as lords, trashed the place, and nearly burn’t the stable down! When it came time to settle the bill, they used some of what they looted, including the lamp to pay the tab!”

Brynyar will volunteer that the ‘lamp’ has brought the trading house ‘good luck’, and when lit, seems to keep raiders at bay. He’s not exactly sure how it works.

Makis listens to the various conversations, keeping his own council.

The little gnome composes his thoughts.

"Well Brynar, there are a few things you should know.

"First, them ogres seem to be part of a bigger plan. We found this letter from someone named Murga. He was demanding to know why your place at the end of the valley ain't been taken yet, and this Murga's got his eyes set on the whole valley. Here's the letters - see for yourself."

Snark will show Brynar both Murga's letter and the ogres unfinished response, offering to translate the giant language if Brynar does not read giant.

He continues, "Seems the ogres been having trouble taking your place. They had some ogre mages with them, and that lamp of yours ain't just lucky, I think it creates an antimagic field. It prevented some of my spells from working.

"But see, that lamp's why we come all this ways.

"Back in Heranmar, there's an old abandoned abbey. Below that abbey, we found an immortal wizard. He's stuck down there tryin' to keep a bunch of portals to who-knows-where from releasing a bunch of monsters - bad ones, way worse than ogres. Now, everyone needs a hobby and we normally wouldn't interfere with his, but it seems his work keeping them portals closed is causing earthquakes out in the ocean. That's pissed off some underwater power that's come up and attacked Heranmar. She threatened to finish the town if we can't put an end to the earthquakes.

"We need that lamp to permanently shut down them portals in the abbey to save both an underwater city and the town of Heranmar. It's awful important."

The little gnome pauses before adding, "On an unrelated note, you ever hear about some guy named Prince Alaric di Amdis that lived maybe about the time that tower was inhabited?"

In the Captain conversation; "Urist is our expert on stone buildings, but more than the Tower, the road would need improvement, especially a ford most of the way there."

With Brynar, the elf offers: "If we can find this 'Murga', we would like to trade dealing with him for the Lucky Lamp. It may even be that the immortal wizard Snark describes only needs the Lamp to cast his spell and seal the portals, but there is the real possibility it will need to remain there forever to stop the magic. I can't promise we will be able to return it."

Snark provides a concise summary of the menace the ogres pose, as well as the role the ‘Lucky Lamp’ is expected to play in the salvation of Heranmar and frankly much of the north coast of the Gateway Downs

Eadric gets a better idea of what he’s signed up for, while Jasper makes herself comfortable, and listens to the negotiations.

Makis points out that it’s not ordinary ogres that pose a threat, but Oni, and everything that entails.

Beatrix and Benni let the retired adventurer know they are reluctant to claim the artefact whilst there’s a threat to the trading post and suggest they could possibly seek to eradicate that threat.

Brynyar’s eyes go wide, on learning how magical, and how important his ‘porch light’ is. “Pa thought it valuable for the metal and the craftsmanship, but no one said it was magic! Una had suspicions. Said it messed with her bow when lit. Some of the fellas with magical trinkets had problems, but thought it had to do with the remoteness of the Rest or the mountains hereabouts.” The swarthy dwarf scratches the bristles under his chin, then adds: ”my mates and me are better than one pretty lamp - and your need is greater than ours. Let’s talk to Garret about this ogre threat.”

Having received invaluable information on the state of the road through the Coldstream Valley and the condition of the tower from Urist and Makis, Captain Landsman is enthusiastic about claiming the tower and adding it to the chain of defensive fortifications protecting the Crescent Valley. He dismisses the threat posed by the ogres or Oni, volunteering that with a corps of engineers in to fix the road and rebuild the tower, accompanied by a couple of squads (including magic users), the inhabitants of Bryson’s Rest shouldn’t be concerned for their safety. Once the site is repaired and garrisoned, it will provide a line of defence for the trading post as well as those using the trading routes” the captain concludes.

”More custom for the trading post!” Bryson declares enthusiastically before addressing the heroes. ”Giants, ogres, monsters - there’s always going to be some bit of botheration this close to the Red Hills and the Culverwood. So…now it’s just a matter of negotiating a fair trade for this here lamp then?!”

When Snark mentions the name Prince Alaric di Amdis, the retired adventurer admits he ”never heard of the fellow.”

The Luck Makers have returned to Bryson’s Rest after defeating the ogres squatting in Azodall’s abandoned tower, and disrupting their plot to dominate the Coldstream Valley. The hero’s did not find the wizard’s magical lantern, but they did find a mysterious gem containing a perplexing prisoner. To the party’s surprise, a lantern providing welcome illumination of the trading post compound on a gloomy day, appears to be the relic the party has been looking for!

The demise of six (and escape of two) giant brutes is revealed, as is some correspondence that hints at what the ogres might have been up to. The condition of the abandoned tower is described. A captain and squad of the Crescent Valley boarder patrol take particular interest in these details.

Satisfied that the threat to his holdings has been thwarted, and learning of a greater purpose for the artefact hanging over his porch, the owner of Bryson’s Rest seems ready to negotiate a price.

Beatrix and Jasper are still interested in facing up against ogres, and Isaac is concerned they might still be a problem.

Urist and Makis volunteer help vs the ogres, but also muse about seeking spiritual guidance on how to proceed. They engage Onesimos in the discussion.

Preoccupied with the magnificent red gem, and its elusive occupant, Snark considers offering it up in trade for Azodall’s Lantern, while Eaderic reminds his new companions that they did just collect a treasure chest full of gems and coin.

Bryson excuses himself. ”How’s about you-all think on it for the night? ‘Last call’ is announced. Some folks stick around to discuss events, whilst others retire for the night. Eventually lights are dimmed and fires banked as folks head off to bed for the night - the light pitter pat of rain the only sound during an otherwise quiet night.

A bit of a rolling stone, Urist volunteers to take one for the team - or is it a mutually advantageous exchange?

Unless there is some great need or we learn quite a bit more about this prince I recommend we keep that gem secure and secret. I would like to hold onto it for the return trip. Hmm. I wonder if it is safe to put the gem in an extra-dimensional space?

Eadric is surprised that Brynyar is willing to part with the lantern on a promise for return service months in the future. But, he certainly won't complain they didn't have to part with the newly gained loot.

Jasper's eye's widen when Benni shares the results of his divination.

"That sounds... ominous. I say we keep Ricky securely within his precious gem.

If we converse with him, we should also guard our hearts against persuasion. Something about this entire business carries the whiff of corruption."

Always eager to learn, she asks "Makis, what effect might extra-dimensional space have? Could that inadvertently set him loose?"

Finally, she turns to Urist.

"Urist, you are unlike any person I've ever met. I'm glad you'll be traveling with us a while longer. May all your audiences in the future be appreciative.

Urist bows deeply to Jasper. "You are too kind to a poor performer like me," she says, "But I am at your service, and your family's."

The troubadour shakes Brynyar's hand and declares, "It's a deal!"

Snark is a bit relieved he won't be traded for a latern. He had visions of being hoisted up each night as a magical guard. That would just end badly for someone.

"You sure about this arrangement Urist? I mean, if anyone can do it, it's you, but it's a loooong way from Heranmar.

"I'm with you guys on keeping the prince, or whatever he is, in his little prison for now. At least until we know exactly what we're dealing with. Keeping him in an extadimensional space sounds fine."

Snark is certainly ready to leave this place and head back.

Divinations complete, the Luck Makers are left to draw conclusions from less than clear results. Perhaps the future is not always clear? Regardless Benni and Makis both arrive at the same ends; that the gem should be kept safe and secure until more is known of its inhabitant. Jasper and Snark concur.

Brynyar concludes an agreement with Urist to turn Azodall’s lantern over to the adventurers in return for two years of the dwarf’s service at Bryson’s Rest once he has completed his service with the Luck Makers.. Beatrix, Eadric, Snark and Jasper are taken unawares by the suddenness in which an arrangement has been cemented and have mixed emotions about Urist’s decision, but support the dwarf in his conviction.

”This calls for a drink! The people of Heranmar get our Lucky Lamp to stave off disaster and we get a new member to our company. I can’t think of a finer end!”. With that, mugs of ale are offered to all and Brynyar shakes each of their hands enthusiastically.

Japser, in her cups, but sober enough to be quiet: "Snark, I'd go full bear if they wanted to do you ill. Or do you... lantern. Moose. I dunno. Fire elemental? Something nasty, anyway. Urist, samesies. If all this goes sideways and you need me to come back to help you, I will. Hmm. We should set up a way for you to get word to us, somehow. I mean. If you want it. Oh dear. I need some water."

Onesimos accepts one mug of fine dwarven ale, and participates in all the hand shaking and good feelings: a win-win for communities of good creatures!

For the Gem and 'prince' Alaric, the cleric quietly puts it back into the velvet bag and puts it in the bottom of his backpack, but NOT in an extra-dimensional space. "Azodell was an incredibly powerful wizard but used a physical hiding space for the gem. Until we know more, I think we should assume there was a reason for that."

The elf plans to depart in the morning and retrace their steps through Crescent Valley, the road to Plateau City, and back to the Star Mages Guild for a return trip to Heranmar.

While they have secured the item of their quest Beatrix reflects that it was a long trip here and a lot of things could go wrong on the way back. They'll have to be vigilant carrying something of such great value. With the lantern disabling magic they also can't teleport back and will have to take a ship probably. Still those are all troubles for a later time, for now it's time to celebrate.

Urist (AC18, HP70of72) (Cayzle)

"Huh, Beatrix! Well, that's a good point -- if the lantern disrupts magic, will it disrupt a teleport? But are we sure? Well, maybe we should try stuff. Like, can I carry it and cast Dimension Door? What if we put it in a lead-lined box? Have we looked for an off switch? Maybe there's a command word?"

"Maybe we should ask the Prince if he knows anything about the Lantern? Who knows what its creator may have told him? Just don't point the lantern at the gem -- that could be bad."

[OOC: Note that Urist does NOT try any of the ides she is suggesting. Not until the party agrees!]

"After all, we should know more before we give up and decide our future is ship-shape."

"If I'm right, I don't think the lantern's gonna be a problem."

Snark will experiment with the lantern. Being daytime, he assumes it is unlit and has been lowered. If not, he lowers the lantern on its rope and removes the light. He makes sure someone is there to help the weak little mage if the lantern turns out to be rather heavy. How big is the lantern?

He casts Prestidigitation and Mending to see if they work with the lantern off. He pulls out his Continual Flame to see it works in the presence of the unlit lantern. Then he puts the Continual Flame inside the lantern to see if that turns on its anti-magic property. If not, he will light the mundane light source to see if that turns on the anti-magic zone.

If, as he suspects, the anti-magic zone only works when the lantern is lit, travel with the thing should not be a problem.

Eadric helps out with the experimentation if any tests require any of his strengths. He also indulges in the drinks and party Brynyar offers, keeping to himself for the most part.

Drinks are poured and consumed in varying amounts as the Luck Maker’s and Brynyar celebrate their transaction. Jasper has one too many and professes her loyalty to her companions whilst the others confine themselves to a single mug of ale.

Talk turns to the matter of transporting the lantern and any effects it might have on their planned modes of transportation. Beatrix is particularly concerned about any interference it may present to the possible teleportation home to Heranmar. Urist and Isaac suggest a number of avenues of questioning and Snark conducts a few critical experiments with Eadric’s assistance and confirms that the lantern only emits an anti-magic shield when a light source is cooperating within it. The stronger the source of light, the stronger the field. Those who read Azodall’s notebook already suspected this.

Benni stores the gem containing Prince Alaric in the bottom of his nap sack, unsure of it’s magical properties and how it might react to a bag of holding, however Makis is quite sure that the gem does not constitute an extra-dimensional space and any interaction with the bag of holding should be of no concern. (OOC apologies for missing Makis’ last spellcraft roll).

The day draws to a close and the Luck Makers prepare for a morning departure, back the way they came. A quiet night is had by all.

Makis speaks quietly to his brother. I have thought about stand believe, based on considerable study that the gem is completely compatible with extra-dimensional spaces. Might be safer to have it in a place it cannot be detected or scried upon. Remember that it was stored behind enough stone to prevent magical detection.

Snark thinks about the gem containing the prince.

"You know Benni, keeping that family jewel in the bottom of you sack might be fine ... wait. That didn't come out right. Let me rephrase.

"Keeping that GEM in your BACKPACK might be fine, but I agree with Makis that the gem is best kept in an a Bag of Holding or the like. I can put it in an extradimensional pocket if you like. But it'd be best to keep that fella as far away from us as possible."

Snark is satisfied that he was able to sus out the working of the lamp. Before he sleeps, he will cast an extended Mage Armor so it lasts into the next day. Then he gets a good night's rest

He wakes in the morning, ready to return. After working on his spells and getting some breakfast, he's ready to go. The little gnome summons an extended Mount so he does not slow down the party too much on the trip.
