Funeral

Been quiet, I hope? - DM SteveM & Cayzle
Monday June 3rd, 2024 10:24:28 PM

Frit promises to attend the funeral before slipping away. Later, on watch, he discusses things with Aydi.

Nadia is troubled they were unable to save Busby. She suggests exploring other abandoned areas. Privately, she asks Thaeden about the patrols, in some detail.

Aymar agrees to go to the funeral, but privately thinks there is more to be done.

Aydi will go to the funeral, and agrees with Nadia about clearing other areas. He leaves early, too, and discusses threats to the community with Frit.

Nora finds both joy and sadness in their recent adventure. She prefers facing obvious dangers she understands.

Kaida is not eager to attend, but agrees. She wonders about traditions, and asks how they should behave.

Hamlin says he will attend, of course. He also wants to look for other trouble.

Ian is quiet.

DC 20 int check, with +5 if you have darkvision, Highlight to display spoiler: {Dwarves think nothing of patrolling the abandoned areas with just their darkvision to guide them. Thaeden, of course agrees to a thorough search of the abandoned areas. They were being patrolled every two or three days, but clearly a more serious effort is needed. "You may begin when you wish, and I will assign a number of dwarves to help after tomorrow." Thaeden, too, seems unhappy about the funeral.

The next day, and the funeral, arrive soon enought. . . In the heart of the dwarven stronghold of Drakesmeade, nestled within the rugged stone walls, the temple of Domi stands as a symbol of courage and foresight. The air is thick with the scent of burning incense, and the flickering flames from torches cast dancing shadows upon the temple's sturdy walls.

Brother Orim, a respected cleric and the leader of the temple, stands at the altar in the center of the temple hall. The congregation, composed mostly of dwarven warrior-craftsmen, gathers in respectful silence. The temple is adorned with intricate carvings depicting heroic struggles and triumphs, honoring the god of courage.

On this particular day, the atmosphere in the temple is charged with a mourning. Brother Orim, a stout and solemn figure with a long, gray beard, wears ceremonial robes that bear the emblem of Domi—a hammer and anvil, symbolizing strength and determination but also taken as a sign of skill among the craftsmen here.

As Brother Orim begins the ceremony, the room resonates with his powerful voice, calling upon the blessings of Domi for courage and foresight in times of challenge. The congregation listens intently, their eyes fixed on the altar and their hearts open to the teachings of their god. He invites those who wish to do so to speak.

The parents of some of Busby's friends break an uncomfortable silence to speak. . .
"It's such a terrible thing to lose a child so young. No one should have to go through that."
"Busby certainly had a lively spirit. He always kept things interesting for the other children."
"It's important to remember the good times. He had a way of making everyone laugh, even on the toughest days."
"He was quite the adventurer, wasn't he? Always finding something to get into. The children will miss his energy."
"Our hearts go out to his mother. Despite everything, losing a child is a heartache no one should bear."

From what Kaida learned about tradition, no one will think anything amiss if the adventurers do not speak about the deceased.

Ian sheds a tear and feels a little shame they could not save the kid.

Aydi stands quietly in the back.

Nora adds the common blessings of Flower to the funeral.

Hamlin thinks about Nora's observation on the way the room was hidden.

Aymar wears his best outfit. Its been awhile since he attended a proper Domi sermon.

Frit stands in the back with Aydi, moved to tears by the community here.

Nadia and Stone look regal.

Kaida is quiet.

Busby's mother, Ingrida, is weeping openly. Ingrida sits slightly apart at her son's funeral, carrying the weight of the community's guarded words and unspoken judgments. She listens to the polite comments about her son with a stoic expression, her bearing betraying a mixture of grief and bitterness. Last of all, she rises. As she moves to the front to speak, her eyes fall on the adventurers. Ingrida's emotions become more complex.

She takes a deep breath, trying to find the right words to express herself. Her voice, when she finally speaks, is thick with grief. "Thank you for what you did," she says, her tone a mixture of gratitude and pain. "I know my Busby... he had his faults. But he was my son, and I'll always love him." Her voice trails off, and she looks away.

Suddenly, Ingrida cries out to Domi for forgiveness. She swears off drink. She asks for atonement.

Unexpectedly, as if seized by an otherworldly force, Brother Orim is overcome. His eyes gleam with an intense light, and his voice takes on a resonant and commanding quality. The congregation, accustomed to straightforward sermons, watches in awe as Brother Orim speaks to Ingrida. The air becomes charged with a palpable energy, and the dwarven temple seems to echo with a divine presence.

“INGRIDA, SEEK MY BLESSING ATOP MOUNT FORLORN AT THE THAW. THERE YOUR ATONEMENT WILL BE MADE CLEAR.”

Kaida thinks Ingrida has a ways to go to prove worthy of forgiveness. She's unsure how to react when Brother Orim speaks.

Aydi wonders about helping Ingrida. He plans to bring it up with the group.

Hamlin kneels and whispers a prayer to Wardd.

Nadia finds this surprising. She plans to check on Brother Orim after the ceremony.

Nora agrees with Kaida that this was unusual. She remembers what she can about Forlorn.

Aymar is upset and suspicious. He leaves rather than cause a scene.

Frit watches the scene unfold, unsure of what to make of it. He wonders about the thaw.

Ian is quiet.

The congregation listens with a mixture of reverence and curiosity as Orim speaks. Then, Brother Orim returns to his usual demeanor, the divine energy subsiding. The congregation is left in a moment of stunned silence before erupting into murmurs and discussions.

This effectively ends the funeral as far as traditional ceremony goes. Brother Orim moves to Ingrida, pulling her aside to talk before leading her and the pall-bearers towards the catacombs, followed by Selmyn. They would normally be accompanied by close friends and family. After quick consultation with each other, Stern, Thaeden, and several of the Council divide themselves -- Thaeden and some councilors follow Brother Orim. A bit later, some of Busby's friends sneak off that way. Stern and the other councilors head towards the priests' quarters.

The adventurers know it would be a kindness to provide their support at the interment. Kaida listens in on the dwarves. Then she heads towards the catacombs.

Hamlin follows the kids.

The kids stop "sneaking" once they're out of the crowd and in the corridors, hurrying now to catch up with the funeral party.

Ingrida, Brother Orim, the pallbearers, and Selmyn make their solemn journey to the catacombs, the atmosphere heavy with sorrow. The sound of their footsteps echoes softly in the narrow, dimly lit passages. When Busby's friends catch up, having slipped away from their parents, Ingrida's initial reaction is one of surprise and confusion. She hadn't expected anyone else to join them, especially not children. Her grief-stricken face softens slightly as she sees the faces of her son's friends. She kneels down to their level, her voice trembling but gentle. "Thank you for coming," she says, her voice a mix of sorrow and gratitude. "Busby would have been glad to know his friends are here with him."

Kaida and Hamlin may watch the funeral ceremony, or head elsewhere. It is not long.

Frit is upset by what he heard, saying that Busby had plenty of courage. Nora's words calm him.

Nora offers Frit a different perspective. She joins Hamlin in offering to help, not only with the trek but in calming the clan.

Nadia thinks they will have to accompany Ingrida.

Ian tags along.

In front of Ingrida, Brother Orim thanks the adventurers and says that he is sure their company will be a help to her. After saying goodbye to Ingrida, Brother Orim motions for the adventurers to follow him.

Aydi suggests to Aymar that they find Brother Orim.

Aymar thinks finding Stern and the council might be better. He is still suspicious.

Near Orim's quarters, Chief Stern waits with a pair of councilors, Aydi, and Aymar. Stern approaches Brother Orim with a resolute expression. The tension he feels is palpable.

"Brother Orim," Stern begins, his voice firm but respectful, "I have never known Domi to intercede like this. Could you have been influenced by something -- was it really Domi?"

Brother Orim, a cleric known for his patience and wisdom, listens intently. He understands the gravity of Stern's concern. "I believe the prescence I felt was Domi. I am accustoned to feeling his presence, and cannnot imagine anything else affecting me the same way. Ingrida will go to Forlorn Mountain. And our new clansmen here have offered to help her."

Stern's response is immediate. "Thaeden tells me these adventurers have been invaluable to us, but that their work is far from finished. They have pressing matters that demand their attention, crucial tasks for the welfare of the entire clan. I regret they cannot accompany Ingrida at this moment."

With a thoughtful nod, Orim replies, "Chief Stern, I understand the importance of their work here. However, Ingrida's journey is also vital. She won't be departing until early spring, giving us some leeway." Stern's eyes narrow slightly, considering the timeline. Orim continues, "The adventurers can focus on your tasks during the winter months. By the time Ingrida is ready to leave, they will have made significant progress on the clan's needs. Both duties can be fulfilled without neglecting either."

Chief Stern strokes his beard thoughtfully, weighing the cleric's proposal. "Very well, Brother Orim." After a moment, he nods and turns to the group of you. "Are you agreeable to continuing your planned searches for the clan throughout the winter. When spring approaches, we will reassess your availability to accompany Ingrida. This ensures that our immediate need to search the under-used portions of the stronghold is addressed. If a trip to Forlorn is Domi's will, I am sure that will be clear by spring."

Brother Orim smiles gently, relieved that a balanced solution has been found. "Thank you, Chief Stern. I will inform Ingrida of this arrangement. Your understanding and cooperation are appreciated."

While we await that to happen, we best clear the underused portions, thus freeing the clan from any worries from the inside while we are gone, and with those who came in with us, they should be able to hold the front while we are gone. How hard can it be to climb the mountain many do each year?" Nadia seems confident the group can get both task done, given her experience with them.

As for helping everyone, she ventures forth another idea. " Frit here is a genius when it comes to fighting with just ones hands, and Ian and others are great with their swords and such. It gives a different way of fighting from our normal ways. We can help train some who want it to be able to better help defend the outpost and the hold. Many hands make light work, and a mine is not just one dwarf alone in a hole."

Nora seems content at the decisions made. "Seems we have a plan to achieve everything here, with enough time for it all. We'll continue securing the stronghold and start preparing for the journey."

She listens to the suggestions by the party of training the clan. "I... guess that's a good idea, for those that want... but not all are meant for fights. And remember, every warrior in the frontlines needs ten as support, providing food, clothes and weapons". She runs her hand through her hair, thinking for a moment. "I can't teach much about fighting, but maybe for what we are fighting for? I'll spend my time by spreading Flower's teachings, love, song, and stories. And it may even help in the battles, knowing that you'll be part of the stories, part of the history of the clan, and remembered for all time, it gives you the spirit to fight", she says, twirling a lock of red hair in her fingers.

Aydi realizes they will be able to complete their current task. When talk turns to training, he points out he has learned much from the dwarves. He suggests having dwarves with them when they search the unused areas.

Kaida notes that this will give Ingrida some time for reflection. She would like to help the other children this winter.

Ian readies for leaving the stonghold for a while.

Frit thinks they should do both tasks. He wonders about starting classes in martial arts, and possibly getting help from the others.

Nadia likes Orim's proposal -- they can make sure the clan is secure within before going out. She also agrees with the idea of helping to train people. She likes Aydi's idea about having the dwarves help clear things out.

Aymar is relieved to hear that the group can accomplish both tasks. He also approves of Frit's suggestion.

Nora is content. She does point out that not everyone will be interested in learning to fight; she can help remind them what they fight for.

Hamlin would be glad to help teach, and would also learn.

Discussing these ideas with the dwarves finds ready agreement that this is a good plan. The first month of winter sees the adventurers dedicating their time to improving the patrols of Drakesmeade’s unused areas. With the help and advice of the dwarves, they focus on establishing a comprehensive patrol schedule. They work with the dwarves in advanced scouting techniques, focusing on silent movement, observation, and the importance of routine checks. The dwarves have maps of the the stronghold’s unused sections which they cross-check under the adventurers' leadership, marking any peculiarities or areas of interest. Although they focus on locating more hidden rooms or concealed bolt-holes, they find nothing so striking as the hidden apartment.

Despite the workload, everyone also manages time for their own pursuits.

Kaida spends her time checking in on the children and families that were involved in the Busby situation. She visits them regularly, but not so much as to make herself a nuisance. She is polite to Ingrida when she sees her, but doesn't go to lengths to visit the woman. Not yet, anyway.

She has made herself quite comfortable at the Jolly Miner and has informally claimed a particular chair as 'hers'. She enjoys the atmosphere and how lively and carefree it can be compared to the rest of the stronghold. It's the place she feels happiest.

When the caravans visit she introduces herself to each of the gnomes and eagerly looks over their wares in the hopes of finding something special.

For the rest of her time she tags along with Nora, always ready to listen to another tune her friend plays.

Frit helps with the patrols and continues his own training.

He also goes to the school to speak with the teacher that he talked to when Busby went missing. If she seems amenable, he asks for her help in reaching out to children about martial arts training. He will emphasize that the training would be about strength and control, more than violence. He asks her, especially, about kids that seem like they might need some help working on discipline and self-control.

If a group of children are interested, he will meet with them after school, bringing them to Bear Cliff. Initially, their lessons consists of mobility and flexibility, balance and strength training. He teaches them different martial arts poses and forms--and lets them punch the softest of the training dummies. Their training ends with meditation, before he walks the group of them home.

When the caravan arrives, Frit finds the gnomes that he spoke to about winter clothing and purchases it from them. He also sends another letter--and more mushroom tea--to Master Thrissa. He tells her about the work he and his friends have been doing and that he has offered to start working with some of the more rambunctious children in the stronghold.

He also helps patrol the tunnels, looking out for anything that might suggest an arcane presence.

When not at the library or on patrol, he meets up with his friends for some relaxation over drinks or in the baths.

He walks to the gnomish caravan with the others, perusing their wares to see if there is anything of interest for purchase.

Kaida spends hre free time keeping up with the children. She becomes a regular at the Jolly Miner. She does not seek out Ingrida.

Aydi mostly spends his time on patrols. When not on patrol, he trains and studies maps. At some point, he thinks about getting his broken dagger fixed. When a caravan comes, he checks on the letter he sent home some time ago. The dwarves are willing to help fix the dagger; Aydi should describe what he wants done. They understand the need to be careful with items of sentimental value. The gnomes do not go to Sleptais Ciems; they took the letter to Pullman's Crossing, as deep as they get in the Culverwood. From there, they're not sure. These things often work out.

Frit helps with the patrols and continues his own training. He talks with a teacher about training some of the children if they are interested. He also purchases some winter clothing from the next caravan and sends a letter to Master Thrissa. (Frit had previously been measured, as his size is somewhat out of the stronghold norms, and the gnomes were expecting him.)

Nora helps Frit, mostly by preparing his training area. She collects stories and customs, and practices old songs to keep history alive. She doesn't play her own creations in public.

Aymar uses his downtime to re-affirm his faith in Domi. He also continues honing his woodcrafting skills. And, if Frit is willing, he helps Frit teach the children.

Hamlin researches the Planes of Unrest. He tries to find any clue about why this ritual was being performed here. He also looks for anything arcane while they patrol. He learns that the items they found on the altar were “stained with the essence of malevolence.” They were not evil items, but they had been used in ways that would have delighted the power whose attention the shrine was intended to attract.

As winter approaches, the gnomish caravans that visit the stronghold of Drakesmeade bring a variety of wares designed to prepare the dwarves for the harsh season ahead. The gnomes, known for their ingenuity and craftsmanship, offer an array of goods that cater to both practical needs and the desire for comfort during the cold months. Seasonal wares include winter clothing and gear, dried foods and exotic spices, alchemical oils that remove ice and snow easily and others that keep the user warm, bedding, games, and books. As before, there are potions, some wands, and this time a few scrolls. The only magics sure to be available, though, are minor healing items.

Let me know if the characters want to make purchases and we can flesh out details on what's available.

After the unused areas have been gone through and regular patrols set, a more detailed search is conducted. This finds a few various minor threats -- including a lingering spike trap that could have given someone a permanent limp, and a few small pockets of vermin. Despite careful searches for magic and evil, no magical residues are found.

Worst case you can give me a signal and I'll fall off my chair and spill my drink and make everyone look at me instead!" She's trying to find that fine line between being encouraging and being pushy.

Kaida always looks forward to seeing the gnomish caravans. She loves living with the dwarves, sure, but sometimes it's nice to be around folk like herself.

She walks through the stalls spending more time talking to the gnomes than she does looking at their wares. Where did they come from, how have their travels been, what amazing sights have they seen? But they were used in some way for evil ends, the traces of that malevolence calling out to and delighting the force that the shrine was calling out to. "Here, look, this ties the past with our efforts, and the melody and rhythm are close enough to traditional so that it's easy for them to learn, but still new enough that it is clear it's something we brought". Kaida encourages Nora to play for an audience -- maybe a small group at the Jolly Miner. She spends some time shopping at the caravan. Cold weather clothing in her size is readily available, and so are games. (Book standard rates, 8 gp for the clothing; games vary by complexity, materials, and craftsmanship.)

Hamlin talks to Aydi in private, to explain what he learned.

Frit is delighted by the winter clothes that the gnomes brought for him. He also buys some spices as a guft for Nora. He is very happy for Amyr to help him with the children.

Ian goes looking for a magic weapon. Magical weapons are typically sold by the Catacombs, and the gnomes seem to have some agreement not to sell them.

Nora plays her new song for Kaida once it's finished, and decides that maybe she can play for a small group who were enjoying some drinks, if Kaida accompanies her. She tries cooking again, with Frit's spices, very well.

Aydi doesn't know what evil could have been done with the dagger, but thinks maybe it's connected with his father's disappearance. He explains to the dwarves how he wants to fix the blade. He also spends time looking for maps. The dwarves understand he wants the symbol of Wardd to remain. After a few days, they ask him if he wants the symbol of Jancassis to remain on the tang. Aydi is able to find maps to the other strongholds in the Scab, and much of the surrounding area.

Aymar enjoys the caravans. He looks over the goods and makes a few purchases. Winter clothing is available at book rates. The oils cost 50 gp each, and are equivalent to an endure elements spell. The caravan has sold out of protection from evil wands -- they've been very popular this trip for some reason -- but Aymar can buy some from enterprising dwarves for 1000 gp each (that is, marked up 250) or the scrolls are still available for 25 gp each. Like Ian, he is told the caravan does not have magic weapons.

Thaeden learns of the group seeking magic weapons. He suggests that some of the dwarven craftsmen can work on +1 weapons over the winter instead of other things, but doesn't think everyone would be able to get one. (These will cost standard rates). If you want a magic weapon, let us DMs know. Remember there are WBL limits.

He has seconds and is reaching for thirds, when he remembers that she invited him for a "tiny bite." He looks around sheepishly, hoping no one noticed. His stomach growls loudly in protest, and he hopes that no one noticed that either.

He doesn't know what to make of Hamlin's report about the malevolence of the items they found on the alter. He wonders how the teddy bear and music box might have been used for cruelty or evil. He does worry about what that means for the community. He also worries about what that means for Aydi. He'll pull Adyi aside as they walk back to Bear Cliff. "How, um, how are you doing? He returns to the school to see if any children expressed interest in training. He is nervous--though he's not sure if he is anxious that they will say yes or that they'll say no.

Nadia had spent her time out on with some of the patrols, keeping up her idea of clearing the passages, and training Stone to better scent out anything evil or hidden. She knew they had many things to do, but she still had an idea one day to dive into the other holdings, and knew they would have traps like the spike trap that had not been properly marked. She still mutters to some of the guards about that one, and would talk with the elders about ensuring the current maps of the hold were updated, but to not let anyone know what the symbols met exactly, incase someone unfriendly found them, just something to mark the dangerous parts.

After the clear had been given in the hold though, she had then went on hunting trips to gather supplies for the winter, and again to train Stone for any dangers in this area of the mountains. She share none of her worries with the group more because she feels a bit overly paranoid that she had missed something on the hunting trips. Sure the evil had came from the inside, but those giants had not been back yet, who's to say she had not missed them? In her worries, she had missed everyone but Frit when he was on the wall on outside guard duty, and thus was late coming to the caravan for supplies.

Nadia had also spent time with the found map trying to puzzle out it's secrets given the location was not too far from their front door!

Frit finds Nora's food delicious. He may have had more than his share? He isn't sure what to think of Hamlin's news. He worries about Aydi. Some children express interest in training; the teacher assures him that if these kids like it, more will come soon. OOC: How much were the spices? Looked around, but couldn't find a price. (Let's say 1 gp for typical spices, with the ability to pay more for fancier stuff.)

Nadia patrols and works with Stone. She is particularly concerned that the dangers they find get marked on maps. She gets some hunting in while she can, but worries that she may be missing dangers like the giants they met earlier. She tries to figure out the map they found, but has not yet. She wonders about magic armor.

Hamlin wonders about the items they returned. He knows they are not evil and cannot hurt their owners, but wonders if they have something in common that could be discovered.

Ian asks Thaeden about getting a +1 dagger or +1 shortsword made. He is willing to use his masterwork weapon to help the process.

Aydi is surprised to learn about the symbol of Jancassis, but it wasn't visible with the hilt in place. He decides to keep the symbol there because the dagger was his father's, but does not want to worry about the dagger's past. He tells Aymar he's learing to deal with the cold.

Nora is delighted the others like her cooking. She goes shopping. Masterwork tools for cooking? A typical iron pot costs 8 sp. A masterwork tool that gives a +2 bonus to skill checks costs 50 gp. So how about a cooking set for 50 gp. . . multiple pots, pans, and utensils. Conveniently packs into a lightweight chest for 2 gp more. 30 pounds total. Practical for home, less so on the trail? The bolts are readily available.

Kaida jumps at the chance of a duet with Nora. "You just start and I'll try and keep the beat" She buys clothes and cards, herself.

Aymar thanks the gnomes, making purchases with funds he had before he claimed the magic ring.

With the stronghold’s unused areas more secure, activities turn to teaching and training. Frit starts regular sessions on unarmed combat. Anyone with a warrior background is welcome to train with the guard (which given your experience amounts to training the guard). Brother Orim supports talk about Flower, thinking spiritual resilience and faith in times of hardship very important. Friendships begin to form, especially between the adventurers and the children of the clan, as they share stories, teach games, and impart valuable life lessons.

"You're a good male, Aydi," says to his friend. "One of, um, the best I've ever met. I have no doubt you'll use it to do g---, um, do what's right."

Frit is nervous about his first lesson with the children and is very grateful that Aymar is there, too. He starts by having Aymar help him with a demonstration of hand-to-hand combat, and then Frit talks to the children about the rules of lessons, especially the importance of respecting each other and the fact that violence should always be a last resort. He has the kids play freeze tag--to work on balance and speed--and lets them "catch" him multiple times, forcing him to freeze in increasingly absurd positions. They do a couple of exercises focusing on balance and strength. Then he has them go through some basic stances, gently correcting their form where necessary. He finishes up the class with some yoga and meditation, serving each of the children a cup of (herbal) tea, which is how Master Thrissa would always end his lessons. He wants to continue the tradition, though, prior to the lesson, he consulted with Nora about how much honey he should put in the tea, which is not how Master Thrissa would have done it, but he suspects the children will enjoy it more that way.

Nora gets a set of cookware in a nice chest, overwhelmed at the amount of tools it included. She tries the chest, but lifting one end a bit decides another way of moving it to her apartment might be better. "Friends, could you get this to my room, it's a bit too heavy. Frit? Aymar?"

After getting all to her home, she examines the kit and goes to ask the kitchen at the Jolly Miner several times the purpose of some item.

Nora is quite knowledgeable of how honey mixes with tea. She shows Frit some different choices. "This is barely noticeable, but gives a slight soft feel. And a bit more like this, you start to taste the honey and it turns sweeter. Here, it's about the highest you can get at a tavern, and children tend to like sweet, so shouldn't be too much. Then", she adds a couple of more stages in between, "and finally, you start to get to the point it won't flow if you add more. Which is about right, Try it", she offers the incredibly sweet and thick drink to Frit.

Encouraged by Kaida, she goes to ask the Jolly Miner staff if they would let them perform the new song at a regular, not very crowded night to get a initial feeling. She prepares by trying to concentrate on singing, and letting her hours of training with the lute subconsciously guide her fingers. Before performing, she says a small prayer to Flower for guidance.

He does agree, though, that the children would probably love tea the way she prepares it.

Nadia was surprised when Aydi ask about the additional firepower over protection, and gives it some thought. After a moment she would respond "I think both are important. And we must remember, having many different tools is useful. We currently have you using the ring, but what if we needed to switch it to someone else? Would having more rings split among the group be better? Or the stronger ring given to say Nora so she can survive a fight, which then heals us to finish it? It is a many faceted answer, and there may not be a right one."

Nadia would come by a bit later, not to ignore her friend playing, but just general worry about the outpost and the pig farm and everything kept her busy, perhaps more than she really should be. Everything seemed to be going fine. But she couldn't feel that the map with that cipher on it was important, it was one of the few things they couldn't return to anyone.

Kaida finishes up on her shopping. . . for now, anyway. She supports Nora's performance, establishing a credible beat.

Hamlin agrees with Nadia's warnings about traps.

Frit encourages Aydi. He and Aymar start training the kids.

Nora gets a set of cookware in a nice chest, overwhelmed at the amount of tools it includes, which is more than she wants to carry. She takes some time to make sure she knows what each piece is for. Apparently a milk pan is different than a saucepan. Why knew? She helps Frit select a tea for his students, and performs at the Jolly Miner to enthusiastic applause.

Aydi ponders his ring. He attends Nora's performance.

Aymar helps his friends as he can.

Nadia talks to Aydi about firepower and protection, concluding that they made one viable choice among many. She takes in Nora's performance, or at least part of it having been concerned over the many other things to do. She worries about the map they found.

Ian is quiet.

The first few weeks of classes are challenging. Some children, unaccustomed to the rigorous training and the philosophy of restraint, lose interest and drop out. The classes continue, and Frit's dedication begins to pay off. His patience and persistence resonate with the children who stay. They practice almost daily, their movements becoming more fluid and controlled. Slowly but surely, the class begins to grow. Word spreads through the stronghold about Frit's teachings. Children who had dropped out return, inspired by the progress and enthusiasm of their peers. New students join, curious and hopeful, initial hesitations giving way to confidence and enthusiasm.

Nora may have started nervously at the Jolly Miner, mostly performing for her friends. The bar’s patrons chatter excitedly, unaware of the quiet storm of anxiety brewing within the shy performer. "Remember, it's just like playing for us, but with a few more faces." With a steadying breath, she strums her lute, the melodic notes filling the air, the music flowing naturally. The patrons quiet down, their attention captured by the unexpected talent emerging from the stage. Nora transitions smoothly to her song and then her flute, the sound weaving through the room, creating an enchanting atmosphere. The patrons listen intently, their expressions softening, captivated by the sincerity and emotion in her performance. As the final notes of her song fade, a moment of silence hangs in the air before the room erupts in applause. Nora’s friends cheer loudly, their pride and joy evident. The patrons join in, clapping enthusiastically and shouting praises. The staff of the Jolly Miner nod appreciatively, recognizing the heartfelt talent they’ve just witnessed.

The map is old and worn, its edges frayed, and its ink faded in places. Symbols and markings cover the parchment, but none of them match anything Nadia can recognize from her knowledge of the stronghold and its surroundings. The map shows a series of winding paths, strange symbols, and what appear to be landmarks, but their meaning remains elusive. None of these symbols or paths connect to any part of Drakesmeade that she can identify. It's like it's pointing to a place that doesn't exist. Could the landmarks on the map correspond to features in the surrounding wilderness? The map might depict an area far from the stronghold.

Aydi joins the group working with the children once he sees the changes.

Kaida calls Nora Drakesmeade's newest superstar! She plans crafting a special pair of pants. And she begins socializing with as many dwarves as she can.

The central hall of Drakesmeade is abuzz with activity, as dwarves move about, tending to their tasks and preparing for the change of seasons. The adventurers have spent the winter tirelessly working to make the stronghold safe, clearing out unused areas, improving patrols, and working with the children. Their efforts have not gone unnoticed, and the dwarves hold them in high regard for their dedication and bravery.

Brother Orim, however, has a different concern weighing on his mind. He approaches the adventurers, his face lined with both gratitude and determination. He greets them warmly before addressing the matter at hand. "My friends," Brother Orim begins, his voice carrying a tone of gentle urgency. "Your efforts throughout the winter have been nothing short of heroic. Drakesmeade is safer and stronger because of you. But I must remind you of the promise you made—to take Ingrida to Forlorn Mountain in early spring. The time is nearly upon us. Are you prepared?"

Over the winter, the group has discussed what would be fair prices for their finds, and found potential buyers. Likewise, they have arranged to buy some weapons, and can find what non-magical gear they need. Decisions now need to be made about what will be sold and what else will be bought.

Hamlin tells Brother Orim that he is ready to help Ingrida. He agrees with Frit's idea, or maybe a break from training.

Frit enjoys his winter, but knows he has to help as well. He tries to think of anyone who might be able to supervise while the oldest students handle the training. Just to have an adult present while the students worked on their training, Frit could ask the teacher. Or perhaps Garog. If those people could not do it themselves, the teacher should be able to suggest someone suitable.

Nadia considers the items that they have. She thinks about taking the handaxe -- she might not use it as much, but thinks it might be the tool they need for some tasks. She thinks about talking to the group that travels to the mountains at times.

Nora prepares her spells and thinks about what the trip may require. She tries to see what she can of conditions in the area near the stronghold, finding the snow heavier than she has seen it back home.

Aydi is gladdened by Frit's growth this winter. He suggests Frit trust his students. Aydi focuses on abilities that may help on this trip, and asks Brother Orim for a blessing for the group. Building on Kaida's suggestion, Aydi talks about finding Marnish and Muriel for advice.

Aymar agrees the older children should have the chance to lead a bit. He worries whether to leave Scout or take him along.

Kaida thinks they should talk to people who have been to the mountain recently about what to expect on the trip.

The adventurers talk with folks about the trip -- those who have been out with them before, and those they know sometimes trek to Forlorn Mountain (albeit in the summer). The trip is two or three days in good weather. They get an idea of the route, and a warning that frost giants are more prevalent this time of year. Once on the mountain, the path itself is barely a whisper, a track etched by countless dwarven boots over the ages, hidden in a tangled pine copse. The trailhead is marked by a pile of stones 12 feet high.

Frit talks with his class, and they come up with a plan for the oldest students to lead exercises with adults on hand in case of problems.

As the icy grip of winter begins to yield to the gentle touch of spring, the trip to Forlorn Mountain is deemed possible but difficult. The leaders of Drakesmeade set a time for the trip to be discussed with the council, a couple of days off. Brother Orim tells the group this is a routine formality and assures Aydi he will be there to bless the group. As word spreads, the party -- mostly Kaida, Frit, and Aymar -- start getting stopped by children who have letters for them to take on the journey.

Kaida can't help but greet the children with smiles and high-fives. "Did you grow over winter? I'm sure you're a lot taller than when I saw you last. Here. Stand next to me" she plays with some of the younger children. The ones who are still shorter than she is! "Wow, if you keep eating your vegetables you'll be taller than me by summer!"

She takes each letter with care and has a word with each sender. "Have you been good?", "Wow, how neat is your writing!", "Domi is going to love this one", and so on. She wants to make a fuss and acknowledge each of them.

Kaida has a word with Frit and Aymar. "You know, we should probably look for a small box to put these in. Just to keep them safe until we reach the mountain"

Nora prepares for the journey, checking and testing her equipment. "Oh no, was it really this heavy?" she mourns when she tries on her armor and shield together after a long time. "Maybe I'll forget the shield for now, can't shoot anyway with it. We'll need food but the cooking set is much too big to carry. Well, it's just a few days, we can manage that with dry food without getting bored with it".

She notices the letters Kaida got. "That's nice of them. But... what are we supposed to do with them? Is there a mail-sending ritual or something?"

Aydi looks at everything he has planned to bring realizing his magic is still not strong enough decides to go ahead and get some warm clothing just in case it is too cold. As he gets ready he realizes how much bigger Yuki has gotten. He sees she is definitely ready to go for a journey. They have not had as much time out in the fields while the snow was down with all of the added tasks.

Once he is done with his prep and daily tasks Aydi will go see Ingrida and see how she is doing and if there is anything he can do to help her get ready. He will also see how she is doing and take a quick look to see if she has cleaned up herself a bit (signs of excessive drinking and so on).

Frit will take the advice of his friends to trust his students and speak with three of the older children in the class about running training while he's gone. "It's, um, a lot to ask of you," he says to them. "But you can, uh, handle it. And remember that you, that you have each other. If I w--was on my own, I probably, uh, I definitely, wouldn't have started doing this. But I had my friends, and, um, you have each other."

Before he leaves, he will speak to the whole class about respect, loyalty, duty, hard work, courage, and wisdom. These are all part of the Dwarvain Code, but he was taught to live by during his training--well before he came to Drakesmeade. Because no matter who you are, following aspiring toward these ideals, you can become a better version of yourself--at least that's what he hopes he's become.

Frit will offer to help Nora carry some of her gear. He can carry an additional 30 pounds.

OOC: Updated my character sheet today with (very cute) art that I commissioned of Frit! It's a perfect little him.

Aymar is there to support to Frit before their send off. He will work on making sure there is a schedule for the adults to keep an eye on the children. He thanks them for their effort.

Aymar takes the letters and notes from the children with a huge smile. "Domi will be pleased."

"Yes, a box, smart idea Kaida." Aymar agrees as he attempts to hold all the letters without dropping any.
