DM Bob and Carla - ”On the road again   d3=1 (fat fingers! This means nothing…)
Sunday June 16th, 2024 7:13:02 PM

Jasper enjoys an afternoon of solitary exploration in the forest around Bryson’s Rest.

Snark, Benni and Makis sort out the particulars of how best to transport Azodall’s Lantern and the gem containing ‘prince’ Alaric. The elven cleric accepts responsibility for the large red gemstone.

Isaac, Eadric and Beatrix are shown the exercise yard used by those who staff the trading post, and given free reign to use it.

Urist is given a tour of the premises. Bryson has the magical artefact crated up safely (the package is about 2 ft high by 1.5 wide all around and about 20 lbs) and hands it off to the troubadour.
*******

The Luck Makers take extra care with packing their rucksacks, and after morning rituals and conjurations are completed, and breakfast consumed - they say their goodbyes.

It’s half a day to reach Hovel, or a full day and the party could reach the vineyard near Humbles Ford, where they might be able to set up camp for the night. It looks to be another fair day.

(OOC: Who will transport the lantern and where/how is it stored?)

Onesimos doesn't acknowledge Snark's play on words, but perhaps his very stoicism speaks volumes.

The cleric is all for stopping at Hovel, and continuing to stop at villages or towns along the trip back: he can hardly talk to good communities if he avoids them! :-)

Snark does not acknowledge Benni's non-acknowledgement. And he always takes comfort in Benni's hallmark stoicism.

The little blue-haired gnome will prepare his spells, have a nice breakfast, and summon a mount for the short travel to Hovel. "They really should consider a better name than Hovel. It doesn't seem like just a hovel. But, halflings can be a little weird.

"Thanks Brynar for all your hospitality and the lamp. You're gonna enjoy having Urist here. She can be a little PUNnishing, if you know what I mean, but she is endlessly entertaining and I think her troubadour abilities will be a good fit for an inn."

He will cast an extended Mage Armor on himself. As he climbs on his mount, he offers to secure the lamp on the animal if no one else wants to carry it.

Snark thanks Brynyar on behalf of the Luck Makers, attaches Azodall’s lantern to his conjured mount, climbs onto it’s back - and is ready to go!
Urist volunteers to share the burden of transporting the artefact as well.
A half day of travel suits Benni, who would welcome an opportunity for social interaction with the locals.
Beatrix is fine with returning by easy stages. Maybe she’ll encounter some local children and learn about the curriculum in the Crescent Valley?
Makis agrees with the relaxed travel itinerary.
A wary Jasper keeps her wits about her…as does Eadric who scouts for trouble, his head on a swivel.
Isaac thinks the group is loosing the troubadour, but her contract with Bryson’s Rest doesn’t start until she’s fulfilled her responsibilities as a Luck Maker

Travel through the forest is straightforward as the party move two abreast along the rutted cart trail under the dappled shade of the deciduous tree canopy. The druid and the fighter find nothing worrisome, and the party have no encounters whilst on the trail.

Arriving in Hovel the heros learn there are rooms available at Patty’s Place, however it could be a noisy evening! A good portion of the neighbourhood will be attending a party in honour of old Ivar Horntoe whose 398th birthday it is! The Luck Makers are certainly welcome to attend the event!
*******

Celebrations run into the wee hours of the night, but breakfast is served in a timely fashion in the morning. If the party don’t tarry overlong, they can reach Angel Springs before nightfall.

The elf is eager to be at the party at Patty's Place, not only to storytell with the people, but to meet good folk older than he is! That doesn't happen outside of the elf races much anymore. During the party, he tells his stories that showcase friendship and common purpose, family and self-esteem, and the universal agape' of all good creatures: all aspects of love.

A frugal fast-breaking in the morning, and the heroes are off towards Angel Springs!

Snark isn't sure how a halfling party is going to go. If the tales he'd been told were close to accurate, it's going to be a chaotic mess!

But he goes anyway, and is rather surprised that he has a pretty good time. He will conjure an image of a silly purple dragon and create a burning sphere for entertainment, bouncing it around safely if we are outside. And he will summon a Lantern Archon, allowing the Archon to enjoy itself and flit among the happy halflings, using it's tinkling voice to give birthday greetings and salutations.

Finally, he will cast fly on old Ivar Horntoe, with his permission of course, allowing the old geezer to fly around up into the air. He also readies an action to cast Resilient Sphere on the man if his flying looks like it might result in injury.

The little blue haired wizard thinks to himself, maybe halflings aren't so bad after all.

The next day, he will summon a mount, and cast Mage Armor on himself and Makis as they make their way to Angel Springs.

Ivar Horntoe’s 398th birthday party is a rollicking success! Snark’s magic tricks amaze and entertain everyone in attendance, and folks get a good laugh when the old blind dwarf accepts the opportunity to fly a little - but only if he’s secured at the end of a stout rope! Beatrix gets mobbed by the children in attendance, who want to riffle through her pockets and play with her beautiful white hair and tail. Makis isn’t the only one interested in his brother’s stories. With the setting of the sun, the children are hustled off to bed, and folks congregate inside Patty’s Place to snack on leftovers from the birthday feast, and listen to Benni’s tales of friendship, common purpose, family, self-esteem, and other aspects of love.

Eadric and Urist enjoy the festivities, but keep a low profile. If they imbibe at all, it’s in moderation.
******

In the morning it’s the usual routine of prayers, rituals, and spells before the party strike out on the next leg of their trip home. Angel Springs is their destination, and the party can camp outside the town limits near the elven encampment, like they did when accompanying the wine merchants, or they can seek accommodations within the town walls. Urist volunteers to manage ‘the package’ (crated, it’s 2 ft high by 1.5 wide all around and about 20 lbs.)

Before striking out Patty Stillwater mentions that there’s been some problems with bandits reported along the road and advises the party keep their wits about them.

Wednesday June 19th, 2024 11:41:18 PM

It’s a decent day for travelling. Sunny with a few clouds, comfortable temperatures and a light wind. The party are on guard as they make their way carefully towards Angel Springs.

Beatrix takes up the position of outrider, while Makis and his pseudo dragon scout from the air. Urist takes responsibility for the crated lantern, and positions herself in the middle of the group. Snark hitches a ride on his summoned mount. Forewarned that bandits have been sighted along the trade route through Crescent Valley and along the coast down to Windhorn Hamlet and Plateau City, Jasper is on high alert.

Evening falls, and a little before Angel Springs the group pass a trio of riders pulled over to the side of the road. A thin female elf, rugged looking human male, and stocky half orc in dusty nondescript garb huddle over a cooking fire while their hobbled mounts munch on the grass nearby. They look up as the party pass, but after a cursory glance at the formidable group of adventurers, return to the business of cooking their dinner without a word for the party.

At Benni’s suggestion the Luck Makers enter town. Discreet enquiries are made and it is suggested the party might find rooms at the Glassy Gaze tavern on West Spring Road near the old Traders Gate. Sure enough, there are basic rooms available for the standard rate. Though it’s too late for a proper sit down dinner, the kitchen is able to wrestle up a platter of cold meats and cheeses, bread, various condiments and chutneys, as well as a basket of apples. There are a few beers on tap - a crispy lager, a hazy ale, a stout, and a cider. It’s a sizeable enough place with a combination of travellers and locals occupying the common room. No one looks askance at the party, and it seems safe enough.

The stretch between Angel Springs and Windhorn Hamlet is too great to be accomplished in one day, and the party knows they will have to camp somewhere along the road. This might be their last chance to sleep under a roof, until they reach Windhorn Hamlet.

Thursday June 20th, 2024 10:00:30 PM

Early morning arrives and the party strike out, passing under the old Trader Gate and onto the road south leading to Windhorn Hamlet and Plateau City. The terrain is a little wilder and more difficult, though the road is easy enough. The party pass the ominous sight of the burnt out wagon overgrown with weeds and vines they passed on the way up.

Isaac, Eadric and Makis are well rested and alert, having chosen sparingly of the food and drink the night before, but partaking of a good breakfast before leaving town.

Beatrix contemplates her good fortune at finding shelter to suit her needs - but shouldn’t be entirely surprised that most inns have a private dining room for those who can pay the price, and such a room can be pressed into service as a sleeping chamber for a noble creature of size requiring ground floor accommodations!

Snark provides magical protection for himself and the Bloodwich, and spends another day in the saddle of his conjured mount.

Urist trudges along surrounded by her friends. She entertains her companions with songs as they make their way.

At Benni’s request, Jasper starts looking for a good place to make camp. She finds the perfect spot late in the afternoon - level, but with a rock outcrop along one side buffering any winds from the bay. A few low bushes provide some privacy from the road. There’s evidence of previous use as a campsite - a fire ring composed of rounded stones and some patches of bare ground. There’s ample time to set up a defensive style camp.

Twilight is accompanied by a light fog rolling in from Dragon Bay as well as the rhythmic ‘clip-clop’ of two horses at the trot - and soon after the sound - the soft glow of carriage lanterns affixed to a well appointed closed conveyance, a driving seat at the front occupied by a lone figure handling the reins.

DM Bob and Carla - ”Strangers in the night”
Sunday June 23rd, 2024 9:11:10 PM

The remains of a burnt out wagon are checked out. Weeds and vines have already begun to return it to the earth. It is remembered that Thom had assured them it had been there quite some time. Still, it’s a reminder of the dangers inherent in travelling on this remote section of the road between Crescent Valley and the New Elanian Plateaus. (No magic to detect here, folks!)

Camp is set up in an ideal setting discovered by Jasper. There’s plenty of time to scout the area for dangers, source some deadwood for a fire, and cook a meal - before watches need to be discussed. Only as twilight arrives, accompanied by a light fog, does the party notice a closed carriage coming in the direction from Angel Falls.

As the conveyance passes the campsite, Jasper hears a couple of thumps from inside the carriage. The driver brings the vehicle to a halt, and after a murmured conversation through a sliding door at his back (during which the druid hears ”Karlos, please stop here. I wish to speak with these people.” and the driver ask: ”are you sure?”) before he deftly backs up the contraption. A window in the side door is pushed open, and a fair face peers out through the gloom in the direction of the camp.

Benni looks up from his cup of tea and ponders whether the travellers be friend or foe?
Aware the Luck Makers are a formidable looking group, Beatrix nods at the driver and hopes the travellers don’t take fright.
A cautious Jasper studies the conveyance
An equally cautious Eadric readies himself in case of trouble
Urist casts a protective spell, and hangs back
After a quick conference with the paladin, Snark approaches the carriage with an appearance of friendliness.
Isaac looks for the presence of evil auras

While Snark engages the occupant of the carriage in conversation, Jasper moves up (to within 30 ft of the vehicle) and senses the presence of magic! Isaac does not perceive evil from the carriage or the two individuals. He notes the driver is a man of middle years, neatly dressed in a long caped driving cloak - armed and capable looking.

”Why, I’m for Plateau City as well!” responds the pretty blue eyed female with curling blonde hair peeping out from beneath her bonnet, it’s heavy veil pushed back behind the brim. ”I had hoped to reach that charming town of Windhorn Hamlet by nightfall, but we were so late leaving Angel Springs. Karlos says it’s impossible now, and there don’t seem to be any places to stay along the way!”

"I'm Snark Riverstone. I'm sure the rest of the folks here will introduce themselves, and maybe you can tell us who you are. We're travelling with a Paladin and a Cleric of Love, so you got nothing to worry about from us. Well, except for the bard's bad jokes maybe."

He dismounts, and looks around for a suitable place for a campfire - preferrable where ashes might suggest there was one before. Then he reaches into his pocket, and pulls out a small piece of cloth which he places on this spot. He intones a word of power and a rather large campfire appears. (Shrink Item - campfire about 3' across.)

Later, as it comes time to bed down, he will cast Tiny Hut, and any that wish can sleep in it's 20' radius of relative comfort and warmth. He tasks Luna with keeping an eye out while he sleeps.

He engages in the lengthy conversation by the fire, listening and judging the girl and Karlos' intentions. (Sense Motive: 18+17= 35)

Urist hangs back and listens
Isaac chats with the lady, and tries to make her comfortable

After setting the break on the carriage, the driver climbs down from his perch, opens the side door, pulls down a retractable step, and holds out a gloved hand for the lady. A slim female of average height, with blue eyes, and blonde ringlets exits the carriage and lands with a little hop on the ground. She is dressed in a midnight blue travelling outfit consisting of a long skirt and short fitted coat, that covers her from neck to toes. A bonnet with a short black veil modestly protects her head and face. She turns to her driver, and giving his hand a gentle squeeze with both of hers, announces: ”I’ll be fine, Karlos! Please tend to the carriage and the horses.” Turning towards the party she introduces herself: ”Alsanna Somers” and with a wave in the direction of her driver ”Karlos is my protector.”

Accepting a spot in the circle ‘round the campfire, Alsanna will answer any questions providing short and precise answers: she’s been visiting Crescent Valley on ‘family business’, and is now making her way home to Plateau City where her family resides. Those familiar with The City might extrapolate that she lives in one of the wealthier quarters, and possibly even the Noble Quarter. As Snark’s campfire warms the air, and darkness descends, the lady removes her hat and veil, and slightly pointed elven ears can be detected poking out from her dishevelled curls. (Benni and Urist get the sense that Alsanna is telling the truth, but the elven cleric has a feeling the blue eyed blonde is being evasive as well. She certainly isn’t effusive regarding details. Is it reticence, discretion, or something else?)

Resigned to the idea of hosting strangers, Makis steps up to help Karlos with the horses. The bloodwich gets the impression the man has experience with animals, and together the two of them see to the welfare of the creatures. Afterwards the quiet man takes up a position in the shadows, close to his mistress.

Alsanna becomes animated when Benni mentions the Southern Continent, and asks the party at large: ”so what has caused you to be so very far from your home?”

Onesimos notes the reluctance of Alsanna providing any details of why she was travelling in Crescent Valley, and even wonders how an elf would have family in a place mostly populated by halflings. Still, her conversational tactics are sound when speaking with eight strangers. He decides to do likewise.

Benni declines to answer. "We have found it not wise to provide too much information to strangers; just as you are doing. It may be best to not provide that sort of information to chance-met people in the wilderness around a campfire."

Instead, the cleric suggests those who want can take turns with a song or story or other entertainment to pass the evening before sleep. Benni himself tells a story of Philautia, how she was confident in her self-esteem, but became so convinced of her own self worth, she stopped looking for mutual love in anyone else. Her friends, Ludus and Pragma, found her gazing into a pool at her own reflection! Playful Ludus and pragmatic Pragma helped to show Philautia that self-esteem is good, but can turn selfish if taken too far. Love, after all, is a community of everyone.

Karlos is a taciturn man of few words, answering most of the Bloodwitch’s questions with monosyllables. However, Makis does learn he had a natural affinity for animals which was cultivated during his training, and he has been assigned to his lady since he was a very young man. Makis can’t see what is under the fellows clothing, but he does note a buckler strapped to one arm, and a scabbard that likely sheaths a rapier.

The horses slobber appreciatively over Jasper’s hands as she doles out the apple snacks, and nicker and sigh. The Druid gets the impression the animals didn’t like the bustle of town, but enjoyed the fresh air and exercise on the road.

Urist introduces herself, but otherwise is quiet - letting her companions entertain the travellers.

Beatrix fills the breach, regaling her friends and the two strangers with a colourful tale of fighting ogres. Alsanna covers her face with her hands, but spreads her fingers to peep at the centaur.

Benni shows reluctance to share additional details with the blue eyed blonde, and changes the subject.

Snark makes a clever gambit and asks Alsanna if she ever heard of a noble by the name of Alaric di Amdis, or the Amdis family. The lady frowns, tilting her head to one side and tapping a finger against her lips, before fixing the gnome with her big blue eyes and responding: ”…in your studies? Was this a long time ago? My father might know something…” before her voice trails off.

Collecting her bonnet and her veil, and rising to her feet, the elven lady thanks the heroes profusely for offering her the protection of their camp. Before wishing everyone a good night, and making for her carriage, she volunteers that Karlos will help keep watch through the night.

Onesimos tries hard to get a hunch on what Alsanna was thinking, worried that Snark gave too much away. Alsanna is a long-lived elf, and a spellcaster who was on some unknown 'family' business. If she was working for the criminal families of Plateau City, she may very well know of the gem and be able to put the pieces together. Benni is dismally certain that they weren't secretive when searching for Azodell's wherabouts and Tower while they were in Plateau City.

And just because they aren't evil, doesn't mean Alsanna and Karlos are good. While he doesn't decline the offer, Benni doesn't alter the Luck Makers own plans for a night's watch. Trust but verify in the wilderness.

Stifling a yawn, Alsanna answers Snark providing the name Allistair Somers and an address in the Trade Quarter of Plateau City for his business - Obsidian Imports.

Distrustful or just cautious, the balance of the party are troubled by the blue haired gnome’s mention of Alaric di Amdis. Did Snark just let the cat out of the bag? Jasper can’t quite get a fix on the woman, but Benni’s gut tells him she knows more than she’s letting on.

Folks call it a night after watches are determined.

Benni and Beatrix watch as the carriage disappears down the road in a southerly direction towards Windhorn Hamlet and Plateau City beyond. The cleric is glad to see the backs of the strangers. Beatrix is less concerned. The duo continue their watch a couple more hours, letting their companions get a long rest, and wake their friends once the sun is fully up.

The Luck Makers discuss what this chance meeting on Traders Road might portend. Onesimos is extremely worried, and suggests taking an alternate route. Jasper shares her friend’s concerns, noting the party is transporting an artefact of great value and importance. Urist commits to keeping that artefact safe, and plans for airborne travel. Beatrix isn’t concerned for the party’s safety on the road, and Snark suggests some folks might be getting paranoid! Isaac agrees, and recommends the party pack up and head homeward. Eadric sums things up with: ”you can never be too careful!”

As camp is broken up, and preparations are made for travel, some folks -Benni, Urist, Snark, Isaac and Makis and anyone with magical sacks/bags/knapsacks that might give off an aura of moderate Conjuration - note that various buckles and ties on their knapsacks/bags have been undone. The cleric is certain they will never catch up to a carriage that has had a head start of hours, but they do have a lead. "What did she say her father's name was in the Merchant's Quarter?"

Beatrix frowns, greatly disturbed. "So wait, we retrieve this gem that's been hidden for, what ,decades, then someone just happens to somehow know and pass by to rob us without any of us noticing? I don't like this, this stinks of powerful magic informing someone of the gem's movement. This isn't like sallying forth to kill some monster causing problems, we have a gem with an unknown being inside clearly hiding things to try to get out and an unknown person or group that instantly know when it's found to steal it.

It feels like stuff's going on we don't know about, and getting involved might cause far more problems then it solves, especially with our own mission that is on a time limit. Yeah sure, maybe it's a dangerous item some dangerous people just retrieved, or maybe the gem holds a demon prince and that was some other heroic group detecting it was no longer hidden and ensuring it doesn't fall into the wrong hands. We just don't know enough and don't have the time to investigate fully. I don't think we should get involved. "

Snark is pretty frustrated at this turn of events. And particularly irritated that this theft happened and there was seemingly no way to stop or prevent it.

"So, let's think about this. I mentioned Alaric, but nothing about a gem or other item. And what are the odds that we stumbled across someone that knew about Alaric being imprisoned in a gem? Well, what happened last night was no coincidence. It's been more'n a hunnerd years since he's been in there. No, the folks that took that gem likely knew what we had even before I mentioned his name. But who were they?

"Maybe one of them was the ogre mage that got away, but if so they blocked Isaac's ability to sense it as evil. Maybe it was that Murga fella that's in charge of the ogres. Maybe someone from the Star Mages was after that gem since we was asking about Azodell - can we even trust that lot?

"As for getting the gem back, I don't really care much what happens with Alaric. But I am very interesting in finding out who stole it, why the stole it, and how they miraculously were able to search through all our stuff while we had folks on watch, including my bat Luna. We're dealing with someone much more powerful than we are.

"I do think we should follow up with a visit to that so called woman's father. We won't get far calling his daughter a thief, but I'll be interested to see if he even exists and if his daughter was even on the road in a carriage. Something stinks about this whole thing.

"Now, our top priority is getting that lantern back to Heranmar and stopping the aquatic disruptions before Ursula gets her britches in an uproar and tries to wipe out our town again. I'd like to find out what happened with that gem business, but its not really why we're here and its not worth the lives of the folk in Heranmar."

DM Bob and Carla - ”Princes come, princes go…”

To say the Luck Makers are annoyed when they discover Lady Alsanna’s subterfuge is an understatement! How could a lone female and her servant have known the party carried the gem containing ‘prince’ Alaric, let alone pilfer it when it was so carefully hidden?!

The party wasn’t particularly secretive when searching for information on Azodall when they were in Plateau City and they may very well have had their movements monitored. In fact, didn’t the troubadour try to confront someone who seemed interested in her, or in persons entering and exiting the Star Mage’s Tower? Didn’t Azodall steal the gem from somewhere, then double cross the noble who commissioned the theft, thus finding himself caught up in a war between powerful crime families? Wasn’t Alaric convinced members of his family would still be looking for him? Might there be others?

Beatrix and Snark are convinced it’s no coincidence the strangers stopped at their encampment, and both suspect strong magicks were used to sneak past the watches and suss out the gem.

Benni wants to get the gem back, and suggests the party make discrete enquiries as soon as they’re back in Plateau City.

Jasper suggests the Star Mages Guild should be alerted, and the party can do a little investigating when they return to the City.

Urist reminds her friends their first obligation is to get the anti-magic lantern back to Heranmar. The centaur and greenmage are in strong agreement.

Eadric wonders if he might have done better and stopped the theft of the gem, however he is all for helping his friends complete their primary quest.

Makis has not had a good start to his day, and once again is sporting cat’s ears and whiskers. The Bloodwitch feels his trust has been violated by the raiders, and shares a bonding moment with his brother over his desire for revenge.

It takes our heroes one day to reach Windhorn Hamlet where they have a choice of camping rough at the Campgrounds, or accommodations at Grog’s Tavern and Inn (pay what you think it’s worth policy) or the Hearthfire Inn (upscale).

On the second day the Luck Makers reach Plateau City with sufficient time to secure rooms at the Adventurers Repose, visit a bathhouse, and have dinner.

It’s early evening. Most businesses throughout Plateau City have closed. The Catacombs is one shop that is open, as are establishments that cater to evening entertainments, including The Adventurers Repose common room. If folks are tired, they can retire for the night and start afresh in the morning.

Snark is glad to sleep in a bed, and glad to be back at in Plateau City - for now.

"Here's what we know. Azodel got mixed up with some bad folks. He wound up in possession of a gem with some guy named Alaric di Amdis in it. There's a good chance that Alaric was one of those bad folks. This proved to be such a threat to his life that he went into hiding, and he hid the gem behind a trap where it couldn't be detected. The gem and ol' Alaric wind up lost to the Wold fer more'n a hunnerd years.

"We come to town, ask about Azodel. That gem is still so hot that somebody decides to follow us for quite a ways on the outside chance we'd find the gem. I confirmed for them that we know about Alaric. Somehow, they steal it from us without us knowing - I still don't get that one. And somehow they were able to leave while Benni started his watch, but somehow Benni wasn't able to notice his bag had been opened until a couple hours after they left. And Benni don't miss much.

"That gem's a pretty hot commodity, so whoever stole that it likely doesn't want that info out. And as things stand, Alaric ain't out problem no more.

"Let's find out what we can about Alaric and the Amdis family and why he might wind up in a gem. We can ask around about Alsanna Somers, but I'm guessing she gave a false name.

"Depending on what we find out, let's let it be known that Alaric and his gem are on the loose, that someone named Alsanna Somers has it, and that ol' Alaric may be back. Who knows - maybe Alaric will pay us a visit soon to thank us for busting him outta that place!

"Then we skedaddle back to Heranmar and save the town."

DM Bob and Carla - ”Snooping around”
Monday July 1st, 2024 10:38:17 PM

Evening finds the Luck Makers discussing their options and debating the merits of chasing down the gem containing Alaric vs delivering the anti-magic lantern to the archlich abbot Heribert in the bowels of the haunted abbey.

They know the mysterious captive had been a prisoner for some time when he was ‘aquired’ by Tyrone Azodall, and that the gem seems to have been a bone of contention amongst the warring crime families in Plateau City. It also seems either the theft of the gem, or Alaric himself hasn’t been forgotten.

The party also knows the archlich has been drawing on the powers of the nexus under the haunted Abbey to fight off encroaching outsiders by keeping the portals sealed and time is of the essence. Each time the undead abbot draws on the magic confluence of Ley lines, he risks setting off cataclysmic disturbances to the ecosystem of the Gateway Downs - like the storm surge that wrecked havoc on Nyana’s underwater home, and nearly caused the destruction of Heranmar.

Though folks are divided, the majority favours taking a day or two to make discrete enquiries about the Somers family, Obsidian Imports, and Alaric di Amdis, while arrangements are made, and a date set, to teleport back to Heranmar with the lantern.

The next day there are opportunities to visit the Star Mages Guild, the headquarters of the Woldian League of Adventurers some of the temples, snoop around the Trade Quarter or the quarters where wealthier folks live, etc - singly, in pairs, or as teams.

Onesimos pretty much agrees with Snark's summation except for two points: that there is also a good chance Alaric is a good guy that the bad guys all want, and that he himself isn't the most observant when it comes to spotting people. Other than that...

Not a person to bluff or have the local knowledge to sift conversations without giving away what he is doing, Benni opts for letting the others make the discrete 'fishing for information', and the cleric goes to the Star Mages Tower with whoever is helping to coordinate transportation home. " It has been more than a month since Nyana visited Heranmar after the last disaster, and I am getting worried that the lights from the Abbey may be seen soon, which is the portent of another bad storm."

Since the WLA is a generally good oriented society, he will suggest that it might be good for the WLA to be aware there is a rumor going around that Alaric di Amdis was trapped in a gem more than a hundred years ago and that his gem has been found. At least, that's the rumor.

He will also ask around if there are any mages nearby that might be willing to trade some spells, particularly at the WLA.

Two days previous…

The first night after the discovery of the theft of the gem, Makis borrows Snark’s special silver mirror and spends an hour casting the spell that would permit him to spy upon Lady Alsanna’s servant, Karlos. The bloodwich watches the man driving the carriage through the night. He is pushing the horses hard. From the landmarks dimly outlined in the dark of night, it looks like he is within several hours of making Plateau City.

(OOC: Please don’t ask for us to go backwards in time as this can get troublesome. Will allow this one time!)

First day back in Plateau City…

Onesimos visits the Star Mage’s Guild and is recognized by Evander. The young elf escorts him up the several flights of stairs where after not too many minutes he is ushered through the big oak door and into Archmage Halisthan’s sanctum by Minerye. The cleric of Flower is invited to join the halfling and his secretary in a ‘second breakfast’ of conjured pie and tea. Seeming relieved to learn the party has returned safely, he fixes a date for the party’s teleportation home. The Archmage will send a message to Olostim to confirm a time and date for the standing stones near Heranmar to be readied to receive a party of eight!

Beatrix gets some sympathy from her old teachers when she shares her frustrations at the lack of steady work as a teacher, and managing work/life balance when she is being constantly drawn into adventures.

Jasper tries to enlist Urist’s help with a ‘makeover’ before venturing into town to snoop around. The druid is interested in checking out the Black Genie Shop (located in the Dragon Quarter) as well as Obsidian Imports, supposedly in the Trade Quarter.

Normally devil-may-care, Urist is suddenly plagued by budgetary concerns.

After a morning jawing with his old friends at the arena, Eadric heads to the headquarters of the Woldian League of Adventurers in the afternoon where he learns all about the WLA!

Snark accompanies the old fighter, and makes some queries about the Somers and di Amdis families. He learns that the Somers were minor nobles that fell on hard times. Obsidian Imports was their business. Rumours were that not all their dealings were above board. ”But that was a long time ago, and there don’t appear to be any of that family around anymore.” The di Amdis family on the other hand were high ranking nobles. There might have been some mingling of the Somers and di Amdis bloodlines for dynastic purposes, but the di Amdis line effectively died out. The news that there might be a di Amdis held prisoner inside a gem comes as a surprise to the old fellow to whom Snark is speaking.

The bargain hunting greenmage is sent to the Star Mages ”if it’s magic you want. But you’ll find nothing is free in Plateau City!”

(OOC: 100 miles per caster level for teleport. Yes, the Southern Continent would be too far for Snark to manage at this time.)

Revisiting Gryphon Books - the shop where he picked up the nifty book on devils, demons, and outsiders - Isaac is directed to the Royal Library in the Merchant Quarter. The paladin spends the better part of the day deep in the bowels of the library leafing through mouldering old tomes, but his persistence pays off. He does find reference to a noble family by the name of Somers, and learns that they dabbled in trade - imports and exports. The date on the book reveals it is almost 200 years old.

Please continue posting for ‘day one’ activities in Plateau City, and then we will move onto ‘day two’. ‘Day three’ is the date set for teleportation to Heranmar (Sunday night’s DM post if PC sheets are on track.). After the Star Mages, Benni walks across Adventurer's Square to the WLA, finding Snark and Eadric already asking all the questions, and receiving some really interesting answers! The cleric trains with the best instructors of the Wold for the afternoon, and even finds time to get a Bite-and-Pint at the Red Dragon Inn while marveling at the historic building that is one of the most famous in all of Plateau City!

In the evening, he encourages the others to all compare notes, giving the information of their departure in 2 days time, and it won't cost anything. "I think we should provide Azodell's Notes that we found in the Tower to the Star Mages. It certainly won't hurt us to have a future favor stored up!"

Eventually the Luck Makers make their way back to the Adventurer’s Repose where they share the evening meal - and the information they have gathered in the course of the day.

Onesimos allays Urists concerns over the cost of teleportation when he lets everyone know magical transportation to Heranmar has been arranged through the Star Mages. The cleric would like to make a gift of Azodall’s notebook to that group and seeks his friends’ approval.

Urist is able to help Jasper with her makeover. The Druid has a long list of places she wants to visit in the Big City.

Isaac shares what he learned at the Royal Library and it matches with what Snark, Eadric and Benni learned at the WLA. It appears the Somers and di Amdis families were around back in Azodall’s days, and though it is thought the family lines had died out - the party have reason to believe otherwise! It galls to know they will return to Heranmar without the gem, but at least the authorities can be alerted to possible trouble. Snark provides the WLA with the names of Alsanna Somers and Alaric di Amdis, explaining that the former is now in possession of a gem imprisoning the later.

In the quiet of the evening, Makis borrows the gnome’s silver mirror once again, and spends an hour weaving the magic that would allow him to see where Alsanna Somers might be, or what she is up to. Thursday July 4th, 2024 10:36:17 PM

After breakfast, Jasper and Benni head to the Merchant Quarter. Most of the morning is spent getting to the area, but there is lots to see along the way. The duo encounter blank stares and head shaking when the name ‘Somers’ is mentioned, however mid-day they enter a little hole-in-the-wall wine shop staffed by a stooped elf of indeterminate age. Familiar with the name, Obsidian Imports he volunteers that Allistair Somers and his family imported the best wines and rarest liquors to be had on the plateaus. The family got involved in some shady dealings, and when they tried to expand their influence in the city they came out on the loosing side of some sort of turf war. He mentions an old warehouse in the Trade Quarter. ”Rundown now, and empty.” If Jasper and Onesimos follow up on this lead, they do find an old, abandoned warehouse on a side lane off Purse Street. The bottom story is defaced by graffiti, but higher up - Obsidian Imports, A. Somers, Sons and Daughters can be seen in faded paint. There is some evidence of vandalism and fire damage.

Eadric takes it easy - roaming around his old haunts, and ending up at the WLA once again. The League folks are glad to learn of the adventurer’s interest in their organization, and remembering him from the previous day let him know the information his friend - the blue haired gnome - shared, has been noted, and some local reps are on it. Eadric learns there’s a ‘keener’ staffing a WLA outpost in the town where he’s heading, and the League will get in touch with the Luck Makers if they have further questions, or updates to provide.

Beatrix agrees to turning over Azodall’s notebook to the Star Mages and just happens to be hanging out in the common room of the inn when Evander comes by with a note for the group, confirming the departure time set for the following day.

Snark and Makis take turns with the gnome’s expensive silver mirror. Unfortunately after one hour of effort, the greenmage is unable to make a connection. Shifting his gaze to look over the female’s shoulder, he spots the dull glow of a red gem. For many minutes the female stares at the gem. Then, with a sigh, she places it inside a drawstring bag.

That evening, the Luck Makers meet up at the Adventurer’s Repose for their last evening before teleporting home to Heranmar, and to share what they’ve learned.

[ooc] 5% chance/level of it working so 45% chance at 9th level: Roll of 36, so success. Spellcraft roll of 30. And +2 to that to identify magical auras with his Elf racial ability.

When/if informed by the others of what they find via scrying Beatrix will comment, "If they're still traveling then they're likely heading somewhere else. We very much don't have time to try to chase them down."

“Benni” AC 25/13/24 CMD 21. HP 55/ 55 Onesimos (SteveK)
Friday July 5th, 2024 12:14:50 PM

Onesimos sighs, he would have liked the Luck Makers to explore the abandoned warehouse for clues: there was no way he was going to enter only with Jasper! But with the teleport scheduled for the next day, it was go in at night unprepared and tired, or save it for another day.

He nods that Alsanna is traveling not to Plateau City but to some other, unknown location. ”I didn’t say ‘vampire’ Snark. And it also could be that, as an elf, she is 250 years old and manages to escape the downfall of her family in Plateau City. It is wise to prepare for either case.”. The cleric avoids being too close to the pungent-smelling halfling.

The cleric will wrap the notes as a gift and when they go to the Star Mages Guild, he will make a point to find Winerye to give the gift and a note to the Archmage. ‘Thank you for your hospitality and help. We found these in Azodell’s Tower in Crescent Valley and thought they should properly be with the history of the Star Mages.’

Jasper explores the old warehouse, looking for books, scrolls, anything that could be useful, as well as any concealed doors or traps.

Perception = 39

She also casts Detect Magic. If she catches anything, does it feel the same as what she got from Alsanna, the carriage, and Karlos?

Urist (AC18, HP70of72) (Cayzle)  d20+15=35 ;

Urist had a nice day shopping with Bea, and is happy to part with the notebook.

She is glad to hear the Mages Guild will teleport them in exchange for the notes.

She stops by the temple of Flower in Plateau City for evening prayers, just because she has heard it is beautiful.

Back in time for evening snackies and dwarven rum, Urist watches the scrying.
"I'm not sure what to think about the thief and the gem."

She casts a Wall of Stone spell and a Fabricate to make a statue duplicating the thief looking at the gem.
Craft Sculpture 35.

"That's not a bad likeness, if anyone wants a record."

Then bedtime, and ready to go in the morning.

Snark is puzzled by Benni. "Well, you didn't say Alissa was a vampire. You said she might be undead and that we only saw her at night. What kind of undead did you mean?"

Snark will visit the tobacco shop again to replenish his supply and make sure he has plenty to share with Olostim and perhaps others on our return.

DM Bob and Carla - ”Time to go home…
Sunday July 7th, 2024 9:51:58 PM

Wrapping up day 2…

An impulsive Jasper squeezes through a broken door, causing Onisimos some degree of worry. The elf knows she doesn’t have much time, so makes a quick survey, before popping back through the door. There isn’t anything exciting to report when she rejoins her cautious friend - the warehouse is ruinous inside, and any goods it once held have been cleared out.

Urist accompanies one or the other of her friends as they shop and sight-see, making the Temple of Flower her last destination. As vast a city as it is, there’s a chance the troubadour runs into Onesimos and Jasper after they have checked out the dilapidated warehouse!

At Puula’s Components Snark is able to stock up on pipeweed. The clerk invites him to give a new mix called Tired Rooster a try. It is a surprisingly invigorating blend. There is also a half-price sale on Ranger’s Way a somewhat green sort, and Heroes Embers a dark, bitter blend.

Isaac checks in with the city guard. It’s mostly comprised of younger individuals - so not much scuttlebutt from activities that occurred a century or more previous. Feeling at a disadvantage in the big city, the paladin orders his dinner and attempts to escape to his room. On the way up the stairs, he meets…

Makis coming down with Snark’s silver mirror under his arm. Having successfully spied upon his nemesis, the Bloodwitch was able to find quite a bit of magic upon the female’s person, and recognized aura’s of strong transmutation and moderate abjuration, as well as strong-almost overwhelming conjuration.

Later that evening…

When the party are ‘round the dinner table, Eadric shares that the WLA had taken the report regarding Alsanna Somers and the gem seriously, and would be looking into the matter - and had promised to get back to the Luck Makers if they have further questions, or updates to provide! The fighter has never been to Heranmar before, but apparently there is a WLA presence in the town?!

Benni and Snark debate the nature of Alsanna’s longevity and whether it is attributed to the long lives of elven kind, or possibly something…unnatural?

Beatrix sums things up - the party don't really have the time to chase after the fleeing Lady Alsanna.

The next morning…

On arrival at the Star Mages Tower, the Luck Makers are greeted by Evander and led to the teleportation circle. Minerye and Archmage Halisthan are in the foyer to see the party off! Minerye accepts the package with its attached note from Benni, and the Archmage asks: ”Wizard Olistim is expecting you. Are there any last questions before we send you off?”

Jasper (Holly) HP 66/66 AC 24 /13/19 CMD 9 | CMB 7
Monday July 8th, 2024 1:48:21 AM

Jasper is uncharacteristically verbose. Normally quiet, it seems that she babblies when she's at deep social unease.

"Yes! MANY, in fact. I was hoping someone could tell me something-- anything, really-- about... errr, how should I put this. Gate demons? You see we saw-- oh funny, see, saw, wordplay, hah-- well, we saw this really very TERRIFYING face at the Abbey in Heranmar. That's the thing that's trying to get through. But we know nothing about it, or why it's causing such a ruckus, or what it wants, or anything except that it's a baddun. Oh, I'd also love it if you could tell us anything you know about Nyanna. She's the elemental or fey or who knows, goddess maybe!!-- who wants to wipe out our town. Um. Thank you."

She's not sure what to do with herself and sketches an uncomfortable little bobbing bow at the end of her torrent. She trusts that other, more competent people will ask good questions about the gem, how to use the lantern, and the nature of the rift centered on the Abbey. For now, she just wants to get out of the presence of the grandees.

Beatrix has no questions. They have their quest item and it's best to hurry back, not start asking questions that might get a bunch of inquisitive mages hunting for more information.

Snark Riverstone (MarkB) AC17 T13 F15, CMD 15, HP 78/78
Monday July 8th, 2024 7:34:17 PM

On the tobacco, Snark will pick up some Tired Rooster and Hero's Ember for himself and his friend Olostim. He already bought a couple pipes for Olostim last time he was here.

He looks around at the room containing the teleportation circle. "Ya know, I saw this place when we got here, but I never really appreciated it. You guys are pretty great to get us back to Heranmar. See ya around."

He's ready to go.

Makis will share what he gleans from his scrying. Our thief seems to have a number of enchanted items, two of which are quite powerful and one of those almost overwhelmingly so.

He watches Jasper as she ramble he tries to understand what inspired her near outburst but says nothing. He is ready to return home as well.

Urist (AC18, HP70of72) (Cayzle)
Monday July 8th, 2024 10:34:50 PM

In the morning, Urist gets ready with deep care paid to her wardrobe. WIih her disguise expertise and magic hat, her outfit consists of a blue and white dress with a fitted bodice and straps fixed at the front and back by two mother-of-pearl buttons. A pinafore is worn over a high-necked cream blouse and the outfit is paired with shiny red shoes.

Urist listens carefully. When it is time for teleport, she clicks her heels together three times while saying, "There's no place like home!"
