As the morning sun casts its golden rays upon the rugged landscape, the storm giant sits on the ground and digs some field rations out of one of the downed ettin's satchels. The breakfast spread before them is certainly plentiful, although rough fare, and the adventurers were eating when the giants interrupted them. The giant gestures for the adventurers to join in. In this moment, surrounded by the beauty of nature, the adventurers find themselves able to break bread with a being of immense power. He suggests that they entertain each other with stories.

Nora has asked a question about the giants they fought, and also news of the area. Kaida has cast detect magic on the defeated giants' possessions. She asks if the giant is hurt. Aydi sees no other potential danger in the area. Aymar points out the human was not with the giants this time.
Upon learning the adventurers don't speak Giant (at least not in general), the giant repeats its earlier statement, this time in Common. "Get comfortable while we talk. I'm Daniel. Thank you for your help." He promises to answer questions, but expects stories from the adventurers in exchange.
Hamlin thinks the weapons are too large to keep. He tries to coax Ingrida down, but does not succeed.
Nora offers to help the giant heal. The giant thanks her, although he seems a bit surprised at the offer. She helps Frit make tea. She sings a song to start the conversation.
Nadia does not trust this giant, or maybe just not yet. "We should probably take the axes and sell them however when we get back home. They could be worth money." She goes and asks if Ingrida will join them, but Ingrida declines. She introduces herself and Stone in the giant's tongue.
Aydi checks for danger in a wider area. He decides his grasp of giant is not as firm as he had expected. Seeing the others talking with Ingrida, he offers her the chance to walk around a bit. She accepts this offer, not moving closer to the giant.
Aymar is relieved the giant is not being hostile. He has worked up an appetite.
Frit understands the implications of breaking bread, and responds by making tea. Nora helps, adding too much honey as usual.
Kaida tells the giant she doesn't speak his language, so would he please continue in Common? She is happy to have second breakfast.

Most likely the firbolg was the "human" the adventurers saw earlier, unless they saw the man and the giant together. As for the area, if the group intends to travel up Forlorn now (he points to the mountain, not calling it by that name) then they had best be ready for bad weather. If they all have cold weather gear, it should be fine, but if one of them is unprotected it will get unpleasant.

This girl being a quick thinker decided to hang off the balcony. Now keep in mind my room was on the second floor and she was in a state of shall we say undress. I never really saw that coming. You do not need to say anything just come sit around the fire with us." (Diplomacy 12)
After hearing some of his friends tell a story some with a little extra flavor Aydi thinks he might have one to tell. "Before I came to the mountains I was on a journey for a much different reason. I ran away from the home I had only known to try to find my father, still am in a way. But that is a story for a different time. What I am going to tell is the time I decided to first try my hand at reallocating supplies. I was with a few others one was a kobold, an orc, and me. One of us decided we wanted to be a little daring or it could of was more likely we needed to get something to eat decided to sneak in to what we thought was an abandoned home.
Well after some time sneaking in to the kitchen getting a little but of food that seemed to always be there without really looking for it in the kitchen we thought hey this was easy lets go farther and see if there was anything worth while that we could maybe sell and who knows maybe get a place to sleep that was a bit warmer then the streets we were on." Aydi takes a breath.
"Well, now that we have gotten some nerve we decided to go in and see if there was worth a bit more. We went further in and we well lets just say that did not go so well. We got caught in a trap or at least a couple of us did my friend Rokbi (the Kobold) and I ended up stepping on something which triggered something everything happened in a blur and next thing I knew Rokbi pushed me aside just in time a ray hit him and turned him to stone. All the while Zog ran away getting caught by the town guard. In the end I did something I was not proud of and ran. We do have a few stories to share. - DM SteveM & Cayzle Tuesday July 9th, 2024 10:35:17 PM Nadia offers a bit of a story, about meeting her companions and fighting owlbears. It is inspired by real events, at least.
Nora blushes at the giant's praise.
Hamlin takes on the challenge with a tale about a former girlfriend.
Aydi joins the group after patrolling with Ingrida. (Ingrida is still afraid of the giant.) He tells a story about his early adventuring days.
Frit doesn't join in the storytelling, since he has no talent for it.
Aymar enjoys the giants company. He tells a story about dealing with a gopher.
Kaida teases a story, but doesn't get into it. She'd rather eat.
The storm giant turns his attention to Nora, his eyes softening with a touch of empathy. He towers over her, a stark contrast between their sizes underscoring the challenges she might face in the world of giants. "Little one," he begins, his voice resonant but gentle, "the world of giants is vast and often harsh, especially for those of smaller stature like yourself. In our society, power and size often dictate respect and survival. To navigate this world, you will need an ally -- someone large enough to command authority and shield you from harm."
He pauses, considering his words carefully. "But you should choose carefully. Ideally, you should find someone generally wise, contemplative, and more measured in their actions. Stone giants value artistry and the beauty of the world, and they can offer protection and guidance in the tumultuous landscape of giantkind. Though they are simpler and more brutish, a hill giant can still provide the necessary strength and presence to ensure your safety. But be wary of their tendencies; they are not refined or noble. Some sorts are known for cruelty, and should be avoided. Above all, avoid the ettins. They are cruel masters, driven by their own base desires and the constant conflict within their two heads. An alliance with an ettin would bring nothing but misery and peril."
The giant listens eagerly to the stories, encouraging those who join in. He asks for one more round, promising to tell why he is out this time of year in exchange. (OOC: Roll a performance check when you tell a story, or I'll have to roll randomly for which one the giant likes best.)
The storm giant notices Frit standing quietly at the edge of the group, his imposing frame contrasting with his shy demeanor. "I see in you a strength and discipline that many aspire to but few achieve," he begins, his deep voice carrying a note of encouragement. "You are a warrior who has honed his body and mind to become a formidable force. This is no small feat, and it speaks to your dedication and spirit. Storytelling is not just about words; it's about sharing your experiences, your journey, and your wisdom with others. Your actions, your discipline, and your martial prowess are stories in themselves, tales of perseverance, resilience, and mastery. You have much to offer, even if you do not realize it."

Well, once we got back I had this weird feeling I was being followed. Everytime I would turn around it would seem something or someone was there watching. Even a few times I would bring food back to my room step away and when I came back it would be gone. This would happen for days and the only thing I could find was a growing appetite amd a bit of irritation. This all ended when I decided to make a small trap I would go get a little extra food and set up a trap to catch whatever was doing this to me and went to bed after making sure I had eaten a full meal. That night I woke up after the trap had been triggered only to feel like something was asleep on my head. I sat up quick and saw the food from the trap had been cleared out and a little fuzz ball was staring back at me wanting more. Frit enjoys listening to the other's stories. When the giant speaks to him, he ducks his head, though it doesn't hide the blush creeping up his neck to his cheeks.
"Um, thank you, sir," he says. "I, um, I'm afraid that I'm not good at w-w-words." Embarrassed by his fumbling speech in front of this noble giant, his blush deepens. "Yours, though. They are, um, very kind. I still have much training to do, but I'm, um, I'm trying."
He takes a deep breath.
"The, uh, the day I began my training, the day I, um, was taken into the monastery as a novice was the worst and the b--best day of, um, of my life. Some of the other children where, uh, I grew up. They could be cruel. Because of the way I talk and, um, what I am. We were in the city and a group of them, they were, uh, throwing insults and a few rocks at me. I tried to ignore them, but, um, they just wouldn't stop and I was so angry. I'm ashamed to say that I, I lost my temper and started fighting. Again. It was something of a, um, habit for me. I was bigger than them, but they were, um, older and there was five of them. I didn't know how to, um, fight against numbers like that. When they finally let up, I had a split lip, a cracked rib, a broken nose, two black eyes, and, uh, a hell of a headache. The monk who had gotten them to leave me alone, Master Thrissa, she, um, she brought me the monastery to get bandaged up. She told me that she saw enough of the fight to know that I'd fought fiercely, but not with, um, any wisdom or control. But she thought I had, um, potential, and she promised to teach me. Not just to fight, but to have the restraint not to fight. To master my emotions, still my mind, and to, um, let go of anger. She promised to help me find peace. She, she taught me everything I know, made me the male I am today. So your kind words really should be for her, not, um, me."

Nora accompanies the story-tellers on her lute, but does not add one of her own.
Aymar starts a serious story, but needs to clear his head of some of the memories.
Kaida is ready to elaborate on her teased story, but decides to check on Aymar.
Remembering his own promised story, Daniel begins, his deep voice resonating with the weight of history. "Listen well, travelers, for what I am about to tell you is a tale from a time long past, a tale of ambition, betrayal, and the eternal struggle for power."
"Throughout the winter months, when the cold mountains become a sanctuary rather than a peril, the frost giants -- my eternal foes == seek an artifact of immense power: the Ice Forge. This ancient forge, crafted by the hands of primordial giants, has the power to shape ice and cold into weapons and tools of unimaginable strength. But more than that, it holds the potential to challenge Fhorge, the fiery force that guards the imprisoned power within the heart of an unknown mountain."
The giant pauses, his eyes reflecting the flicker of distant memories. "Long ago, in the previous age, the frost giants sought to harness the power of the Ice Forge to free this old one, believing it would grant them dominion over the world, tipping the balance in their favor. However, the elves, knowing the danger this posed, stole the Ice Forge. They paid dearly for their bravery, for the frost giants hunted them down with relentless fury, killing those who had taken it. Yet, the Ice Forge was never recovered. It disappeared into the mists of time, hidden away by the elves in a place unknown, beyond the reach of the frost giants."
He leans closer, his voice lowering to a conspiratorial whisper. "The frost giants' search for the Ice Forge continues to this day. Each winter, they scour the mountains, driven by the hope of reclaiming their lost artifact. Should they succeed, they would possess the means to challenge Fhorge and potentially unleash the power hidden within the mountain's heart -- a power that could alter the fate of our world."
The storm giant's gaze intensifies as he looks at each adventurer in turn. "This, my friends, is where my path crosses theirs. I do not know if the Ice Forge is more than a legend; but the frost giants will stop at nothing to reclaim what they believe is rightfully theirs. When the thaws begin, those frost giants that linger in their search are easiest to find. So this is when I go looking for them."
Digging a vial out of his bag, Daniel hands it to Aydi. "Your story was quite hopeful. Thank you."

Aymar appreciates Kaida's company, he will take the bread and hide a small smile.
The giant's booming voice draws Aymar back to the gathering. Aymar was intrigued by the legend, but Daniel's mention of the elves peaked his interest.
"Do you know where these elves came from? Where they were killed?" Aymar asks barely contain excitement. "The elves would definitely have a written account if this were true. And possibly give us clues to help us find it."

Kaida returns with Aydi and listens to the stories and questions. There maybe some truth to the legend.
She has a different topic on her mind.
"I don't suppose your people and ours could become allies, or at the least, trading partners? I'm sure there must be things we have that you could use. Even if it's just to share information. At the least, I'd hope we can keep channels open for diplomacy and take it from there"
Isn't it likely just a folktale? - DM SteveM & Cayzle Friday July 12th, 2024 9:26:41 AM
Nadia, as a worshipper of Fhorge, finds the story interesting, and asks Daniel about joining up after their current task.
Hamlin wonders if the frost giants are getting closer to the ice forge or if it is just a folktale. He's not keen on hunting frost giants.
Nora wonders that the ice forge is like.
Frit wonders why the gods would tolerate such a thing if it is a threat to them.
Aymar returns to the group after some moments of Kaida's company. He thinks elves might have a record about this artifact, if elves stole it.
Aydi thanks the giant. He's curious about the giant's tale.
Kaida asks about alliances or trade.
Daniel tells the group that if they want to find him, they can take the trail between Flamebearer Mountain and Forgotten Twin and head northwest until they reach the ocean, then turn east and follow the coast until they see a castle. He is headed back that way now. As for the ice forge, he has no idea if it really exists, and has never tried to find out. Perhaps asking elves about it is a good idea. The frost giants concentrate their searches in the valleys south of Scald Lake.
"Thank you for your aid," Daniel says, his tone earnest as he prepares to depart. "I have always known the value of strong allies, and you have proven yourselves. Though I’ve heard troubling rumors from other giants about dwarves, I see no need to test those tales against my own experience." With a final nod, Daniel steps back and picks up his sack. "Goodbye. May your paths be safe and your journeys fruitful. Should we cross paths again, I would be honored to fight by your side."
The giant's long strides move him quickly, and before long he is out of sight. As Daniel goes, Ingrida scrambles down to join the adventurers. "Well, that was certainly an interesting encounter," she says, her voice carrying unmistakeable relief as the giant disappears in the distance.

But the news of the elves perhaps holding a secret to these lands.... I should have asked him about those symbols on the map was. He may have known or at least seen them before, he seemed well traveled."

Frit nods at Hamlin's words. "If his tale was not as tall as those Nadia, um, spun," he grins at his friend, "we might need all the allies we can, uh, get."

Nora thinks about a bit of what Nadia said. "But... what size the map was? Wouldn't a giant have a larger map than we would? Still, might have known something about the symbols but elves may still be the better bet", she guesses.

Kaida waves to Daniel as he departs into the distance. "He seemed nice" she decides as she stands and dusts off her pants.
The excitement had distracted her from the cold, but she can feel it again now and pulls her jacket tighter around her.
She's in agreement with Aymar. "Yep, first things first. Let's get Ingrida and these letters to the mountain"
First things first - DM SteveM & Cayzle Saturday July 13th, 2024 9:22:53 AM
The group spends another day in travel to reach the foot of Forlorn Mountain. The day alternates between thick, grey clouds and clear skies. The air is heavy with moisture, and a persistent chill settles in. The day ends crisp and clear. As the sun sets behind the jagged peaks, the sky transitions through a gradient of colors—warm oranges and pinks give way to deep purples and blues, finally settling into a rich, velvety black.
Above, the stars emerge one by one, like diamonds scattered across an endless expanse of dark velvet. They stretch across the sky, a shimmering river of light composed of countless distant stars. Constellations, both familiar and obscure, stand out, their patterns ancient. Soon the mountains are bathed in a silvery glow, illuminated by the light of a full moon that hangs low and luminous in the sky. Its light casts long shadows, creating a stark contrast between the illuminated snow-capped peaks and the dark valleys below. The rugged landscape takes on an odd beauty, every rock and tree highlighted in the moon's gentle radiance.
Those keeping watch after midnight see the clouds return.

For the first part of the watch, Frit sits quietly, contemplating the night's beauty, sipping some tea that he brewed (free of the sleeping Nora's honey) to keep warm. He offers some to Aydi.
"A few years ago," he finally says. "I, um, I don't think I would have every imagined I'd be in a place like this. Doing something like this. Hearing everyone's stories today, w--where we, um, all came from. Makes you wonder where we're, uh, headed." He takes a sip of tea. "Wherever that is, I'm, um, glad that it's with you and the friends we've made."
