DM Mitch and Hugh Crypt maze Tuesday July 16th, 2024 9:54:52 AM Manolo looks around for any signs of body dragging or dripping blood to determine the whereabouts of the surviving occupant. He asks if they are missing anything. Gnubert helps Mortimer clears the dirt and the mud from the carriage to get to the bodies. He then starts digging graves for the bodies they found as the others search for the third person. Hank helps dig the graves. Ash thinks the vampires might be involved in the missing person. Mortimer checks for lingering auras of the undead.
There are no signs of a body being dragged off, like there might be if a wild animal came across the scene and decided to scavenge the dead or dying man inside the carriage. A few PCs think the vampires might be involved, which may be recently bias, but something the vampires said might be tickling the back of their mind. “No humanoids will die, unless some other cause would kill them.”
Mortimer’s scan reveals no aura, but the storm happened a day or two ago (I lost track of how long PCs were in town) and unless the Vampires were so strong they could crush the party without trying the aura wouldn’t linger that long. At the very least they haven’t been around in the last hour or so.

Loryn looks over the scene and recall what some of the others mentioned about the vampire behavior to the not harming others conversation and their general elusiveness at questions. "We have a bride and her mother if you ask me here. Our missing person might be the father of the bride and this all smells like a girl being 'given' to the vampires to me. A sacrifice of one for the benefit of many." He says the last part with a rare inflection of disdain in his voice, leaving no quarter to what he thinks of such a practice.
Loryn will assist as he can to properly bury the victims, but does not relish the time lost to do so. The gnome is a bit more anxious than usual when he has faced danger before. The vampires unnerve him slightly, well most, no all, yes ,all undead did that
"If we cannot make the cave by day here we should pull back an hour or so to give us the most time to complete this task before dark. Gnubert? IN the dark of the cave, would the vampires have need of sleep, or should we not expect the daylight outside to be of any benefit?"

He thinks perhaps the bride was to be a sacrifice to the vampires and buries the victim while losing time he could spend returning to the cave. He suggests if they can’t make the cave before daylight they should pull back an hour before to give them the most time to complete the task before daylight. He asks Gnubert if the vampires will be sleeping during the day or if the daylight outside would convey no benefits. Gnubert ponders Loryn’s question concerning vampires and passes the information along. He suggests they be wary of speculation. Hank adds that vampires or no vampires they have work to do. Mortimer points out animals couldn’t have taken the last man and wonders about the horses.
Judging from last time it takes slightly more than a day to reach the vampires so rest is required to not fight them at night. After more marching until dusk, a quiet night, and an early morning the party heads out and are soon at the valley where the ancient battle took place.

Buffs are discussed. Knowing where the cave is it only takes about half an hour to find again. It took about 20 minutes of careful exploration to go down last time so if they hurry a bit they can buff up in the safety of the sun before moving 10 minutes down the tunnel to where the vampires are. (Going to post a combat map in header, once everyone’s ready place yourself where you’ll be as you guys enter the room)

Mortimer hopes to Wardd the others prepared themselves for vampires. However their history has shown otherwise, he thinks to himself with a grimacing expression.
He suggests, "If ya can bring Daylight (spell) into the cave, put it over that 'ole in the wall; cut off their escape route, yea'."
Mortimer then begins to put a series buffs himself and others. He invokes the powers of unlife for an unnatural vitality against death. His eyes go black as pitch.
(Mortimer casts False Life and Darkvision on himself. Adds +11 temporary hitpoints, hate the die roller!)
He then summons all the Luck he can muster on himself and a few others.
(Mortimer casts Heroism on HANK, MANOLO and Himself. +2 morale bonus to Hit, Saves and Skill Checks. Duration: 80 minutes.)
Mortimer asks Hank and Manolo if they can grab a few wood stakes and carve sharpened points on the ends. "For stabbin' in the hearts. Kills'em good an' dead!"
Just before they enter the cave, Mortimer will cast a few more spells. The shadows around him coalesce around him forming an invisible shield. He then invokes more powers of undeath and a ghostly aberration of his gnarled hand floats beside him.
(Mortimer casts Shield and Spectral Hand. +4 Shield Bonus. -2 Hit points. Durations: 8 minutes.)
He draws his sickle and it immediately erupts into an icy burst of frosty death.

Friday July 19th, 2024 9:51:01 AM Gnubert tells Lorryn he’d like to get a bit closer first in order to make sure they have plenty of time on the spell before they start. For a plan he suggests no one get isolated and they should focus their fire on a single enemy at a time and of course don’t get hit. He further clarifies that he will cast 2 Magic Circles versus Evil outside the cave with one centered on Hank for the melee folks and one on Loryn for the caster types. He reminds folks of the 10 foot radius limit so that if someone steps outside that they won’t have the protection. He says he can produce a pint of holy water for each of them and then asks for the Gods protection before casting his spells, handing out holy water and walking resolutely into the cave. Manolo thinks about the upcoming battle but can’t seem to focus Hank says he’s ready to rumble and takes point being ready to advance when everyone is prepared. Mortimer hopes to Warrd that the others have prepared themselves enough. He tells the team if they have daylight they should put it on the wall to cut off the escape route. He then buffs himself and casts heroism on both himself and some of the others. He asks some of the others if they can carve some stakes and further buffs himself with other spells before he enters the cave and draws his sickle.
The party fully prepares and moves into the pitch black cave. Once they enter the large room where the ogres lay before they find it empty of vampires - just the ancient furniture and the normal bones scattered about. After a few moments mist streams out of the crack in the back of the room, separating and flowing through the room. (people didn’t put themselves on the map, please do so and indicate what lights you are using)

He readies and moves 30 feet forward into the chamber. Manolo moves forward. Gnubert follows Loryn. The cleric brandishes his light mace with a show of bravado and then attempts to detect what the sounds are and where they are coming from. Mortimer moves forward with Loryn and the others with a blur of unnatural speed. His spectral hand flexes anxiously itching to deliver a spell and ponders what he knows of Gaseous Form magics. There is a spell that lets someone turn into a cloud like this… Hank moves forward, ready to attack Ash casts Summon Monster IV choosing a Celestial Lion. Once arrived he tells it to protect the living.
As the party cautiously advances the mist laughs, flowing around them and forming into the vampire ogres! Three materialize in the hall, cutting Ash off from the rest of the party, while two appear to flank those who moved inside the room.
VO 1 stares at Hank, and he feels a strange force compelling him to obey. DC 12 will save or follow the Vampire’s mental command Highlight to display spoiler: { Block the hall, defend me! }

VO 3 tries to grapple Ash, but the Wizard manages to evade it’s grasps (19 vs CMD)
VO 4 goes for Manolo, but has as much luck as his fellow (17 vs CMD)
VO 5 is the only vampire able to grab someone. He seizes Gnuberts and draws him close, mouth opening to bear it’s fangs.

Loryn glances back and blanches that Ash is surrounded and knowing there is very little the gnome can do to assist. Gnubert is grabbed and becomes his initial focus. Loryn moves 5' further into the room and with his Empowered Rod in hand, sends a barrage of Magic Missiles at the vampire grappling Gnubert.

Three of the vampires have turned to mist as fast as they turned into physical form. The remaining two roar in rage, abandoning supernatural powers to slam at the party with skeletal fists.
Vampire Ogre 2 slams Ash for 10 damage. Though his Stoneskin prevents the physical damage, he also finds himself greatly weakened (gain 2 negative levels)
Vampire Ogre 4 breaks Manolo’s guard and hits him somewhere vital (crit, 27 to confirm). He takes 18 damage and also 2 negative levels.
The three turned to mist move towards the back of the hall, where the mist first emerged. (From the party’s previous knowledge checks on vampires you vaguely remember that they turn to mist upon defeat and flee to their resting place, but will return eventually if not tracked down and destroyed permanently.) Mortimer is not surprised by the vampire’s retreat. He mutters a few words of power and his Spectral hand takes on a chilled appearance as it races towards the second vampire but the vampire resists the urge to flee (19 vs save = success) Loryn is a bit surprised his attacks were so effective but Warrd is a fickle one and he lends a final spell to Ash if needed. Gnubert moves and throws his coin with daylight towards AA15 Hank steps forward and chops up the vampire. It too turns to mist before his blows. Ash and his lion tag team the last one near him, rending it to mist as well.
As quickly as the attack started it ends. All of the vampires have turned to mist and are flowing back to crack the poured out of.

His spell persists with seven more charges remaining. It points to the northeast corner of the room. It beckons the others to follow; so eager to deliver a touch.
Mortimer yells in the vampires' direction, "WE DON'T LIKE BEIN' LIED TO, YA WITLESS PRATS! We'll make brown bread of the lot of ya!" He moves in that direction toward the northeast corner.

Loryn nods in satisfaction when the last of the vampires are destroyed for now. He agrees with Ash they need to put an end to the vampires permanently. He then uses his Dancing Lights spell to search for a passage to follow. Gnubert watches the mists recede and opines that the vampires should not be able to prey on others ever again. He tells Ash he does know how to consecrate but he didn’t pray for the spell today. He walks to his glowing coin and hurries the other along. Manolo starts to look at possible places where the Vampires have gone or are going.
Mortimer curses that his chill touch didn’t work the way he wanted it to. He has more power left on the spell and spectral hand. Hank walks up to the rock face and knocks on the stone with his bat and asks if they have anything to break through and that a pickaxe would come in handy.
The mist goes through a crack in the wall. Searching that area reveals it is a secret door and a few minutes of searching find a way of opening it.
Inside is a large room containing 5 massive stone coffins in the back. Ancient treasures, looted by the vampires over however long they’ve existed, lay strewn about carelessly. Many have fallen to ruin, but those of metal or other study materials look intact enough to be sold.
A man sits in the corner, leaning against the walls and with a clearly broken leg. He looks up at the party’s entrance, face strained with tension and pain, and motions them to be silent before pointing to the coffins.

To answer Loryn's question, Mortimer pulls two wooden stakes from his belt and holds them up with a shake. He looks to Manolo and Hank and wonders where their wooden stakes are. He had directly asked them both to carve a few stakes just outside the cave. He rolls his eyes in annoyance.
He then removes his backpack and retrieves a hammer normally used for pitons, spikes and nails. It should work nicely for hammering stakes through a chest plate.
His ghostly hand hangs in the air anxiously wanting to touch something.
Mortimer then hands a boney wand over to Loryn. He whispers, "this a detect undead wand. maybe good idea ta figure out the mack from the skivvies, yea'."

Mortimer pulls out 2 wooden stakes to from his belt and holds them up with a shake to answer Loryn’s questions. He looks to Manolo and Hank and wonders where their wooden stakes are as he had asked them to carve some when they were outside the cave. He removes his backpack and retrieves a hammer normally used for pitons figuring it should get the job done. His ghostly hand hangs in the air and he hands a wand of detect undead to Loryn. Ash pulls out his wand just in case. He tells the lion to be ready to kill any vamps that emerge from the coffin.
As the healing washes out the man leans back and some of the strain leaves his face. The party open the coffins, stakes in hand, and find the now familiar desiccated corpses. Badly damaged, they are helpless as the party drive in stakes to render them forever silenced. Gnubert watches the vampires are staked, (Knowledge Religion DC 17)"We should drag them up into the sunlight." Gnubert feels no compassion as he grabs the first vampire by the ankle and begins to drag him out of the coffin (Strength DC 8). Gnubert doesn't manage to do much but continues to work on getting the body out.
Mortimer just doesn't know anything about undead or their ilk. Why would he? Especially the vampire, a popular creature from horror folklore and bedtime ghost stories. A vampire might as well be australopithecus afarensis from a long gone era in ancient Woldian history.
"Really!? They burn up in the son! I gotta' see that!"
Lugging them outside will still be a chore, even in their desiccated state. "Hmmm, the 'uman skeleton weighs 20-25 pounds. These are twice as big sooo ..." he begins working a mathematical equation in the air with his finger, being sure to carry the 4, "...an ogre skeleton should way 'bout 200 or more."
He turns to look at the hulkest among them ... that being Hank.

Hank drags them out, wondering if something will survive as a souvenir.
The party drag the vampires outside and watch them burn. On returning to the room the injured man breathes a sigh of relief. ”Thank the gods you came. There was a slide… my family…” he stops, shuddering and tears in his eyes. ”I was trapped and they came for me. They’ve been taking my blood. I’m supposed to be in Thistleport for the wedding, oh gods the wedding. I’ll have to tell her betrothed. I won’t make it on my own, can you help me?”

With the vampire now completely destroyed, Loryn nods to the mans request, "We will make sure you get to Thistleport safely. We'll return to Windhorne and catch a ship. Through the red Hills and Scab is not a path I care to take." The gnome raises some eyebrows and smiles as Hank escorts the wounded man into the sunlight. Gnubert was going to take care of any physical wounds and Loryn and his Dancing Lights were heading back into the cave to see more to those treasures that were still intact, unless something interesting happens very shortly.
Back in the cave beyond the secret door, Loryn casts Detect Magic and goes over the scattered loot for the next several minutes

The man has no objections to getting a medical check up. The healing seems to have fixed his leg but he’s still weakened by blood drain and might need a little help traveling. He’ll recover, eventually, or with a more powerful spell.
He introduces himself as John Smith, a fairly successful merchant who deals in things like high quality equipment and art objects.
As for interesting things/loot, the ogre vampires have been around for a long time and have a large stash of jewelry, equipment, and clothing from various victims. Most of it is long ruined, but the stuff of more sturdy material has survived and is worth packing up and taking along. It’s, potentially, fairly interesting to look through and take a guess at the stories of the former owners.
After securing the loot and the survivor the party continues their journey. They are heading to Thistleport, a port town on the Bay of Dragons a couple days north of their home. After a string of false leads and adventures their hunt for the Treasure Box of Svengaxi has led to clues indicating a sailing company of some sorts based there and they hope to dig up more details. The box is a dangerous artifact capable of enslaving Djinn, and the party is working for a secret order sworn to ensure it is never used again. Competing against them is a treasure collector who claims to want to keep the box secure as well and maybe use it to influence some sort of meeting with other collectors. There has been a large lack of trust and dislike between the various groups.
Before they left they gave some of their items to the Minotaur representative from the order who promised to get his elders to scry more information. They haven’t heard from him yet, but he seems to know where to meet the party so will presumably show up at some point.
With their new companion they have a fortunately easy and pleasant journey the rest of the way to the port town.

None of the recovered items are magical in nature, however they are valuable and all told can be sold for 35,000g. No doubt anyone carrying magical gear is also the type of person the ogres would avoid engaging.

He looks to see the condition of his shadow. He quietly casts Detect Undead from his wand, and continues to look John over from a distance to see if any undead auras materialize around him (Perception: 12. Sense Motive: 12.).
Mortimer then asks, "Oy, mate. Where'd they bite ya? Been bit myself ... 'ere an there, from time ta time."

Hank tells John that was some mighty fine exposition and explains he’s with the Bellringer Trading Coster and if he’s looking to expand into broader markets John should call on Hank’s brother Geiserich in Bray. Gnubert evaluates Mr Smith and gives him a nod of approval telling him he needs more help than Gnubert can provide but with time he should be fine. He agrees with Loryn that a ship would be safer especially for their injured friends. Manolo whistles a happy tune that they found some stuff that will get them a good amount of gold Mortimer carefully observes John and casts detect undead. He wonders about bite marks.
The party decides to travel by ship and heads back to town. The man they rescued seems completely normal. He doesn't act strangely nor register as undead. His bite marks are plain to see without needing to ask - the ogres just tore off the sleeves of his shirt and bit down on various places on his arm, wherever seemed most convenient for them.
It takes a day to get back to town and another day or two to secure passage but soon enough they are sailing into the port town. Thistleport is a largish town serving as a stopping point for ships sailing along the coast. A sprawling dock leads to the usual assortment of warehouses and inns that service the ships coming to and fro. John thanks the party for their help and departs to track down the family his daughter was to be wed into - they were expecting him by road not ship so probably have no idea as to his arrival.

To the rest, "All right. Clues have lead here so let's get ourselves somewhere to stay and some food. After that, we are going to need look into the shipping that may have been around a few hundred years ago and if we're lucky, maybe find a dwarf, gnome or elf that worked or sailed with them back then."
Loryn will simply ask the Harbor Master for a recommendation on a good tavern and Inn. The gnome has no interest in staying in a rough and tumble area.

Manolo feels tired from the journey and the vampires made the journey way difficult than Manolo thought. "I would rather sleep a little bit more, and will catch with you all in due time", he says in case they want to go out at night.

Hank is somewhat leery while sailing on the ship, keeping to the center of the deck and a hand on the mast at all times. His heavy armor is precisely the opposite of buoyant. He is happy to step foot on land again. "Food and rest would be great. Does is matter which temple we are near, Gnubert? I don't know much about religious politics. Do you have any theological enemies? Or dare I say... Frenemies?"

Mortimer looks around ... he's never been here before. If he were still back in his criminal days, he'd be looking for every opportunity he could exploit and rob; basically anything that wasn't already nailed down.

He also points out the less savory a place’s clientele the more likely they are to run into trouble. It’s been a few days so everyone can go back to full HP. For negative levels, roll a fort save DC 12 for each level. For each success you no longer have that negative level, for each failure it sticks until you get Restoration cast on you. Given that it has been a few days Gnubert can decide he prepared and cast Restoration on the journey if you fail your saves.
The party talks to the dockmaster and find a suitable inn near a temple to Alemi. Waiting for them there is a familiar Minotaur. ”Well met. I have news to share that might help you with your hunt.”

Loryn strolls up with a grin and invites the minotaur inside to join the Argentium for a drink and perhaps a meal. "Brother Numcy good to see you again. Lets go inside"

Gnubert would pray for and cast restoration as many times as needed to assist his friends. "Hank I have no enemies to speak of. I also follow the Gods of the Wold, and not the Gods of Testing so we should be good without about any temple to the Gods of the Wold."
Gnubert is his usual chatty self as they walk to the inn. The cleric stiffens up as he sees the minotaur, and slides towards the back of the party to allow others to speak.

He keeps his opinions to himself but listens to what the minotaur has to say. Loryn leads off to the recommended establishment and upon seeing the minotaur asks who summoned him by saying his name three times. He strolls up to the minotaur and invites him to a meal and drink with the Argentum reasoning there is more privacy in a crowded room than a street. He heads in and waves down a waiter. Gnubert had prayed for and cast restoration as many times as needed to bring his friends up to full strength. He tells Hank he has no enemies to speak of and that he follows the Gods of the Wold and not the Gods of Testing so any temple of the Woldian Pantheon should suffice. Gnubert is his usually chatty self as they walk to the inn. The cleric stiffens up as he sees the minotaur and slides towards the back of the party.
The inn is also technically near a Temple of Serenbeth, as well as several other smaller shrines.
The minotaur smiles at Numcy and accepts the offer to head inside. After they sit down with a nice meal he starts his story, returning the items the party gave to him. ”These allowed one of my elders to have a vision. A ship sailing on a calm sea. An explosion. The slow sinking of the vessel with all hands. Given the nature of the items and the old story in my order that one of our own somehow sacrificed themselves to ensure the Box was lost I suspect this ship was carrying the box and possibly other treasure from the battle.
There was a name on the ship proclaiming it the Blue Diamond.”

Shipwreck at the bottom over 100 years ago. That is going to be a tough find. Hopefully we can get a rote the Blue Diamond likely ran. Loryn raises a glass to the Minotaur in thanks for the information Tomorrow we can work on selling the treasure from the vampires and seeing what company the Blue Diamond was with. Well hopefully she was part of one I suppose

Even though he grew up in a port city, and his family owned a lot of ships.. the thought of heading to the open ocean wasn't on Ash's list of fun stuff to do.
