Monster of Water


Darkness, Pressure, Cold and Drowning! - DM SteveK

The heroes spend the time that Gaffer and Nira need to recharge their staffs by beginning cleaning up Tide House area, CMTC area, and Dirt City in general. Treants and Elementals can do a lot of big moving things, but it takes more finesse to get the small sweeping and clearing, which the refugees fulfill as they are able. Some talk is taken about moving the former slaves to some more hospitable location before using the Time Stone, but the perceptive young woman convinces the others to stay encamped near the heroes. "I'm not understanding everything, but it sound like you are going to be 'poofing' away and back several times, but will always be back here? Then we stay. You are the first things we know is real and not an illusion or mind games. We all want to get used to that before meeting other people. And this is the first time any of us have had a choice about anything."

Now ready, Ramirez ensures he is resistant to fire, and Nira gets everyone some assistance with Endure Elements (or Rose's Temperature Control), and, with nods all around, he touches the Time Stone (doesn't have to hold it) and wills to activate.

The heroes activate the Time Transporter and find themselves suspended in dark, dark, salty water and experience Darkness, Pressure, Cold and Drowning!
(Know Nature autopass: They are the depths of the ocean!)

Darkness! It is pitch black, only Nira, Hmerrin, Gaffer, Desdichado, and Yrul can look about and orient themselves. Ramirez and Danko can only if they have a light source or other means of seeing.

Pressure! Each hero roll Fort DC 15 or take 5d6 damage

Cold! The heroes are prepared thanks to Nira, and avoid any nonlethal damage from hypothermia.

Drowning! (1rd) Instinctively, each hero stops breathing and the countdown begins. Survival DC 10 Highlight to display spoiler: {. Any character can hold her breath for a number of rounds equal to twice her Constitution score. If a character takes a standard or full-round action, the remaining duration that the character can hold her breath is reduced by 1 round. After this period of time, the character must make a DC 10 Constitution check every round in order to continue holding her breath. Each round, the DC +1.}

Gaffer chastises himself internally, why did he not think to prepare a water breathing spell for the others. He can only hope that someone else was wiser than him in this.

He resists the pressure with ease, his cloak wrapping around him, before shifting into a Water Elemental.

As the others may be distracted, he tries to take in their immediate surroundings, there is no guarantee that the area around the seal is safe.

Sir Tolmenedes harrumphed in satisfaction. Water?! This was no issue to one of royal lineage! Yrul had no need to breathe courtesy of Tolly's magic. Tolly kindly extended such generosity to her other friends. (Her weapons and Ioun Stones). Equally the pressure whilst shocking, didn't hurt. Yrul attributed this to the shadowy depths of the water. (Conferring DR10/-). Thus she was surprised, but largely untroubled by the sudden change, particularly as she always travelled light; so was unburdened. Others weren't nfaring quite so well. Danko clearly seemed to be in some sort of trouble; so Yrul attempted to grab him and stabilise him. Swimming wasn't that difficult....usually.

Nira is relieved that between both her Necklace of Adaptation and Pearl of the Sirines, she is able to breathe. Most of the party have the same luck but not Danko and Des.

She does what she can to aid the pair.

If she's confident she can use a scroll underwater she takes out her Scroll of Water Breathing. If her scroll can't be used underwater she provides an alternative.

Water elementals, Ioun Stones, Necklaces, and Pearls all help some of the Tide from drowning (ooc: how ironic, a drowning tide!) Nira's handy scroll provides water breathing to the last three heroes.

The cold of the water is covered, and the water pressure is resisted or minor effects... so far.

And Ramirez is able to tread water and cast a Daylight spell on a touched object. Not specifying one, he touches his Necklace of Adaption to glow with a bright light, where all the heroes can see everything within 60 feet, and dimly to 120 feet. Because of the brightness, every hero casts a strong shadow giving Yrul options.

At least the telepathic bonds are working!

Yrul and Ramirez swim, but Danko, Desdichado, and Hmerrin slowly sink... only 10 feet before they touch bottom on worn slabs of basalt that give some purchase. With a little effort, they see they can 'walk' across the rocks at 1/2 their land speed. Experience tells them that any combat is going to be more difficult if using Hmerrin's and Desdichado's axes (ooc: slashing weapons are -2 attack and half damage underwater).

With the Bard's bright light, it is fairly easy to look about, and, beginning with Gaffer and Desdichado, the heroes learn where they are. They find they are standing on a rocky ledge 50’ diameter. Before them is a cliff going up as far as they can see. Behind them is a precipice going down for the same distance. A 40’ diameter tunnel is directly ahead with a glowing Symbol at the entrance. Upon inspection, the Symbol is the stylized head of the Maharaja, and Nira's Arcane Sight can see it is an abjuration.

A few, small iridescent fish swim by just outside of the bright area followed by a medium sized translucent eel.

Nira does a quick check over the rest of the party to make sure everyone is breathing. "It's a long way down. Best make sure not to slip off this ledge" she lets the non-swimmers know "If anyone wants to be transformed into something else, let me know."

She wants to get a good look at the symbol, but knows how dangerous magical symbols can be. "Shield your eyes for the moment and try and stay back" She edges closer to it and tries to identify it, worried it might be a Symbol of Death or some other deadly magic. Best not to risk the entire party.

"Gimp said there were seals imprisoning five monsters. If this symbol is the seal, and if it's still in place, the monster is probably inside. How should we handle this?"

OOC: Yrul made her save against the water pressure. I simply write that she (erroneously) attributed this to the shadows protecting her. Is a Fort save required each round? Also, Yrul has a Ring of Free Action; so the water doesn't impede her attacks/movement.

Probably when Nira announced what they were dealing with she'd have a better idea. So she turned her attention to her coterie of friends. "Great teamwork guys. We're doing awesome."

Grateful as he is for the water breathing, Hmerrin completes pulling a different cloak out of his haversack and wrapping it around himself.
The fighter takes on the appearance of a manta ray.

As Nira approaches the seal, he gives a bemused grin.
{Would be awfully ironic if we go into the past to break the very seal that allows the monster to destroy our city in the future} he notes.

He waits to see the results of Nira and Yrul fiddlling with the seal.

Nira's unparalled knowledge determines the nature of the Symbol while the others either get ready with magical enhancements, speculate on possibilities, or just be ready to help in any direction indicated.

The Mystic Theurge can see it is keyed to one, specific creature that cannot pass beyond this point. She cannot determine from the magics on what that particular creature is, however. Whatever the creature is, it is trapped inside the tunnel until the Symbol is broken, and only the death of the Maharaja can break the Symbol.

Yrul moves as quiet and as unassuming as a, well, a shadow, and unimpeded by the water (Ring of Free Movement) or the arriving darkness (Darkvision). Past the Symbol, she has nothing to hide in and the other Tide heroes can see her for a moment before she blends in with the dimness of the tunnel.

30 seconds (5 rounds) pass.

Yrul only Highlight to display spoiler: { She and her 'friends' have no trouble moving 150' into the tunnel (assuming full movement but not double move = 30' per round to keep stealthy) and can see 150' beyond that. Looking back towards her friends, she can see the glow from Ramirez' Daylight spell but not the entrance itself: the tunnel must be subtly turning to the right and descending! Looking forwards, she can only see 150' of tunnel. There has been no sense of any traps in the tunnel (Rogue Talent: Trap Spotter), and it appears from her non-expert eyes that the stone is of the same worn basalt as the ledge the Tide was standing upon.}

The rest of the Tide, confident of Yrul's scouting but not wanting her to get into danger without support, begin following the Surface Drow girl into the tunnel. While most of the heroes have various magic to get their speed up, Danko, Ramirez, and Desdichado do not. The dragon-touched Sorcerer asks for assistance from Gaffer and can now move normally. Ramirez is limited to 1/2 speed (Double move = 30') and so is Desdichado (Double move = 20'), so everyone keeps their speed down to the Paladin as he stoically plods along the rock-slabbed bottom.

Yrul, knowing she can be sneaky going full speed and not encountering anything so far, starts going a little faster (Double move = 60'). She and her magical items get no indication of any traps.

Another half a minute passes.

Yrul is able to report there is something else down here. The shadowdancer stops about 450' into the tunnel, and can see the tunnel is ending up ahead, about 50', into a widening area that is glowing with spots of bioluminescence about the floor, walls, and ceiling.

The pressure is getting to the heroes. (ooc: All Heroes Save Fortitude DC 16 or take 5d6 damage.)

Oblivious to the threat of the water around her, Yrul readily moved on. She informed the others that things were getting 'interesting'. She qualified that with : Well Syd's very interested, Callie not so much and ..um...I think Snickit and Dabz are asleep. Only after relaying sundry details of her imaginary friends did she bother to describe what she could see.
She moved forward.
A little bit of bioluminescence wasn't going to deny her the gloom that she thrived upon.

Nira looks to see who else Danko includes in the haste spell. The party are pretty clumped together, with only Yrul off ahead so they could probably all be recipients.

Gaffer's body itself is water and he easily ignores the pressure upon them.

He drifts easily through the water behind the others, trusting the others in front and keeping his focus on the tunnel they have just passed through.

ooc: DM did a little recalculating with main body movement.
1st rd w Des Boots, double move = 30'.
2nd rd w Danko Haste (assumption on all party) and Ramirez Freedom on Des standard actions, then (Ramirez slowest with 30' +30' haste 1/2 underwater) move action = 30' .
3rd rd, Ramirez Freedom standard action, then (Des and Ramirez slowest with 30'+30') move action = 60'
4th rd+. 120' double move for party.

In 5 rounds, the main party moved 360' in the tunnel.

The water pressure isn't getting to the heroes as they press on.

Yrul can easily see the rest of the team 90' behind her and coming up fast. With bioluminescence keeping things nice and dim, but Ramirez' Daylight spell making things more light, the shadowdancer decides to keep moving. She sneaks up the last 50' to the edge of the cavern, and (to avoid the Daylight carried by Ramirez), pops in to sneak a little to the side. (See emailed map)

Behind Yrul, the rest of the team closes the gap, and, Hasted, Freedomed, and Booted, the leaders (Hmerrin and Desdichado) get within 10' of the entrance.

Everyone can see fairly well. A Cavern of (Gaffer, Nira, and Ramirez are certain) natural stone and naturally occuring mossy patches of bioluminescence, is about 100' in diameter with the ceiling arching 60' above the basalt floor. Everyone can see a gaunt Merfolk (Merfolk "a" is 35' from Hmerrin and 30' above the floor), its semitransparent tail with a vivid red crest and caudal fin, slowly undulating. A spear tipped with obsidian held guardedly in both hands. It shouts in Aquan: Highlight to display spoiler: {"Stop where you are! How did you find this most holy place?"}

Gaffer, having rolled a Perception check, sees more. Highlight to display spoiler: { there are at least 7 more Merfolk similar to "a" in the Cavern, and look very on guard. Merfolk "a" also sports a tattoo on his hand Gaffer recognizes as High Woldian. }

Yrul, having rolled Perception and is in the Cavern, sees still more. Highlight to display spoiler: { The Surface Drow counts 20 Merfolk scattered widely across the cavern, and there is a similar 40' tunnel out the back of the Cavern. It looks like the Merfolk are on guard and one, Merfolk "j" looked really hard at the spot Yrul is hiding, but then continued to look in other areas. (Skill Checks are not auto succeed on Nat 20)}

The tone of the creature's words were not overly friendly. She did not comprehend his words though. Perhaps one of the others did.

Yrûl moves around the wall, as unobtrusive as a shadow. Close enough to Merfolk ‘f’, the aggressive fish-man only has eyes for the other heroes.
(ooc: D,2 is back in the tunnel, so the DM interpreted ‘edging around the cavern’ and a double move to get Yrûl to V,2 instead).

Nira knows Aquan, and freely translates any words to the others. The elf tries to explain the Tide’s reasons for being here, and takes a look herself at Yrûl’s warning. Yes, she can see seven more from her vantage point: their translucent bodies are difficult to spot in the water...

Gaffer keeps to his watery form and relays what he has seen. Desdichado stays in place, hands visible. Ramirez wants to know about the creature, and if the Merfolk are protectors or jailors. Hmerrin is certain they are guards, and makes his WLA badge visible. And Danko waits with the others...

Nira considers the spells she could cast should this get nasty. An invisibility spell would normally be up first, but down here there would still be a Nira sized shape in the water. She waits a few more moments to see if anyone can tell if they're evil or not and will base her spell selection off that.

Yrûl keeps sneaking, getting the jist of the conversation through her Telepathic Bond. She is so skilled, no Merfolk can possibly see her, and she gets to the other tunnel.

Nira keeps trying to deescalate the situation. She recognizes the High Woldian symbols, sort of. They look like Brahmah’s Tattoos, but not quite… And yes, they are definitely getting ready to attack. She asks, curious, about what may be done to become initiated.

Desdichado Detect Evil’s Merfolk ‘a’, and gets no aura. He does notice that they are all not, in fact, male. At least a 1/3 are female: Merwomen.

Hmerrin- Ray continues to hold. Ramirez waits for the merfolk's response to Nira.

Danko takes out his wand of protection against evil and casts on himself.

Gaffer suggests telling them about the Seal. The crafty druid looks about and sees signs similar to what he would see in a druidic copse on land: the Merfolk are possibly caretakers here.

Nira senses Merfolk ‘a’ is startled, surprised even that she should ask about initiations. He holds up a hand, and the rapidly escalating tensions, while not going down, have at least had a temporary respite of going still hotter. ”I do not believe you want to be initiated into the sacred rights. You do not appear as young tribal warriors wanting to become an adult in our community. You seem like any other surface dweller that is experienced enough to use magics to come to the oceans and despoil our treasures.”

Ok, she's bought the group a few more seconds at least. Best to use it wisely. Nira translates for Ram and continues speaking with the Merman. She telepathically keeps the party informed of what she's saying.

"I assure you, we have absolutely no interest in your treasures nor did we come here to challenge you. All we want to do is keep our home safe"

She isn't sure about mentioning the seal. It could be there's no single monster here and the seal is instead holding back a massive merman army. Or maybe the merfolk are trapped here too and are dreaming of release? Still, they have to take a shot. Nira does as Gaffer and Ram suggest.

"There is a being who seeks to use a creature here to destroy our lands, and kill our men, women and children." She points in the direction from which they've come. "The one who created the seal at the end of this tunnel has it trapped here and seeks to release it and use it as a weapon against us. We don't travel looking for fights. Is there is a way to resolve this peacefully? Is there anything we could do or offer to show the sincerity in our words?"

Yrûl peers around the corner and… stops. The drow girl stands quietly, taking no actions other than staring into the tunnel (Fascination: supernatural effect). What she sees, the others don’t know, but two effects are obvious. The first is Yrûl’s internal monologue across the Telepathic Bond has suddenly stopped. The second? Gaffer is the first to notice that the Shadowdancer has stopped trying to be stealthy and is just standing there where anyone who looks in her direction can see!!

Ramirez gives suggestions to Nira while the others hold their positions and wait… (Des does not detect any Evil)

Nira continues to talk, to sooth, to explain. She senses that the Merfolk know about the glowing Maharaja symbol, and are about to dismiss the problem when…

A sonorous, telepathic voice echoes through every mind like an ageless power. ”THE NEW ONES HAVE ALREADY VIOLATED THE SACRED PLACE, SENDING IN ONE NOT INITIATED WHILE SPEAKING CALM WORDS. THERE IS ONE AT THE DOOR TO THE SECOND PATH.”

Any possibility of further negotiation is ended as the Merfolk, faces contorted in rage, attack!

Four Merfolk (n, o, s, t) turn towards Yrûl and touch their High Woldian Tattoos. Twenty Magic Missles streak out to stab at the Shadowdancer! (ooc: 17, 18, 22, 16 = Yrûl takes 73 damage). The good news is that the attack breaks the fascination effect, and Yrûl can act freely.

Six Merfolk (d, e, f, g, j, m) send five Magic Missles each to Hmerrin-Ray. (14, 21, 20, 18, 17, 13 = Hmerrin takes 103 damage)

Six Merfolk (a, c, h, i, k, l) duplicate the feat, but their thirty Magic Missles impact Desdichado! (16, 12, 16, 19, 20, 19) = Dez takes 102 damage!)

Yrûl can see the remaining Merfolk (b, p, f, m) set themselves to be ready, gazing at the tunnel where the Tide is yet to emerge.

Yrûl can also relay via telepathy what she saw in the other tunnel: a gigantic serpent resplendent in lilac and white scales that shimmer like a rainbow as it undulates. The eyes were pools of scintillating colors with its head adorned with many short horns...

The searing magical missiles streaked unerringly towards a very distracted Yrul. They would have indeed inflicted considerable harm upon her person had it not been for the attentive, little Callie. The lavender and green butterfly (ioun stone) darted around absorbing every single missile! Yrul heard a dainty belch upon conclusion and was startled out of her engrossed fascination.
How rude! She thought as she darted back around the wall so that the snakey creature couldn't see her. She reflexively drew the shadows around her once more.

.....HEROES

Yrûl breaks from her fascination, lucky indeed that her ioun stone works underwater. Trying to hide again, she is stealthy except for the 4 Merfolk already observing her (ooc: If people are observing you using any of their senses you can't use Stealth.) And she casts a shadow conjuration. Unlike conjuration magic, shadow conjuration only takes a standard action to cast, and 3 Shadow Giant Celestial Moray Eels come into existence!

Without direction from Yrûl, the large eels swim to attack the nearest opponent. M1 and M2 go after Merfolk ‘s’, one biting and grabbing! M3, with no room around the nearest Merfolk, swims to engage Merfolk ‘t’.

Hmerrin launches himself at the talker, Merfolk ‘a’, and pierces it, blood coloring the water.

Ramirez moves up, his Daylight spell shining across the cavern and revealing the glittering gigantic serpent in the opposite tunnel. He uses his bow, targeting Merfolk ‘a’, but the Merfolk is not 15’ away, but 50’ because it is floating 45’ above the floor. (46 – 20 = 26, still hit)

Nira winces at a fight that might have been avoided. Quickly protecting herself, she swims up behind Ramirez.

Gaffer begins to summon some support, surprised that the Merfolk aren’t minions of the Rakshasa, but minions of the Serpent!

Desdichado swiftly heals himself, calls upon Domi's aid, and, his shining greataxe in hand, moves to engage the closest merfolk: Merfolk ‘d’. He arrives, but can’t attack, because the Merfolk is swimming up out of reach!

Danko steps up and targets Merfolk ‘a’ with Chain Lightning and learns some disturbing news: electrical magic works differently underwater! Instead of arcing to strike Merfolk ‘a’, the lighting creates a 30’ diameter ball-shaped electrical discharge at the point of origin: Danko’s fingertips! (Danko, Gaffer, and Nira take 61 electrical damage, Reflex DC 22 for half.)

.....OPPONENTS

The Merfolk swim and weave, all rising out of reach of any hero not able to swim after them. (ooc: numbers by each swimmer show how high above the floor they are.)

Merfolk ‘a’ withdraws from Hmerrin in a flash of bubbles, too fast for an opportunistic attack.

Merfolk ‘s’ escapes the shadow eel and withdraws safely under cover of bubbles, and Merfolk ‘t’ also withdraws under the cover of bubbles

Merfolk ‘c’, ‘h’, ‘i’, ‘k’, ‘l’, and ‘r’ target Hmerrin, the only surface dweller showing they can swim up to attack. A second barrage of Magic Missles pummels the fighter! (20, 16, 17, 20, 16, 14 = Hmerrin takes 103 damage!)

Merfolk ‘d’, ‘e’, ‘g’, and ‘j’ target a second barrage of Magic Missles at Desdichado (17, 17, 14, 19 = Dez takes 67 damage)

Merfolk ‘m’, ‘n’, ‘o’, and ‘q’ target a second barrage of Magic Missles at Moray #2, turning it back into shadow.

Merfolk ‘b’, ‘p’, and ‘f’ hold a Readied Action

Then the serpent moves to the entrance of the cave. Yrul can see the head, 20’ above the floor, poking out around her rocky shelter, but the gigantic creature doesn’t look at the shadowdancer. Instead, it casts a spell, and a Prismatic Wall glimmers into existance at the entrance: blocking Danko and Gaffer from supporting the rest of the team!

And *Pop*, Gaffer’s Dire Shark arrives, but the druid can no longer see his aiming point. So instead of the middle of the cavern, the Megaladon appears just before the Prismatic Wall.

With Snickit and Dabz in hand Yrul stepped back into the shadows - and vanished. (Shadow step: 45' of 160'/day used.) She appeared behind the serpent. (AK,12 and using a hero point to instantly attack.) Snickit and Dabz were as eager as ever: eager to prove that each was better than the other. Bragging rights were very important.

The three Readied Merfolk were waiting for an opponent to cast a spell in the cavern, and three sets of Magic Missiles strike Nira as she tries for a Miracle. (11, 14, 20 = [b]Nira takes 45 damage and must make a Concentration check of DC 64 or lose the spell!)

"Hmerrin! Ram! Might want to back up a little!"

Nira had been waiting to see what Yrul would do, but it looks like the Shadow Dancer has moved further into the opposite tunnel. She changes her intended aim and directs the epicentre of her earthquake as far south as she can.

As she begins the gestures, the magic missiles from the mermen all hurtle towards her but detonate before impacting. She's quite glad now that she took the precaution to cast that Shield spell!

.....HEROES

Yrûl, shouting encouragement to her eels, shadow-steps, then heroically makes one sneak attack on the glittering serpent! (ooc: using a hero point allows a standard action, not a full round action.) Snickit bites true, but the hard scales reduce most of the attack! Still, she gets enough of a hold to get a vital spot and start to bleed the monster!

The two Shadowy Celestial Moray (CSM) Eels continue to attack the closest Merfolk. CSMEel 1 swims up towards Merfolk ‘n’ and a gigantic reptilian head shoots out to bite hard and swallows the Eel it is able to attack. SCMEel 3 fares no better.

Nira avoids the ozone of the electrical discharge, moves into the cavern, and again is saved from harm by a well-timed Shield Spell! And then, pausing for her companions to avoid her planned Miracle, she brings the roof down.

Swift: After, Nira might be able to cast a Quickened CCW on Hmerrin for 42pts, but only if she can reach… (ooc: how does Nira reach Hmerrin with a Quickened touch spell?)

Ramirez, even underwater, is an excellent bowman, and places three arrows in Merfolk ‘b’. The bard notices his ‘holy’ energy is not affecting the Merfolk. Still, it is enough to slay the guardian.

Desdichado offers to heal Hmerrin, and keeps his place.

Gaffer takes 26 damage from the electrical surge (ooc: DR doesn’t work vs magic) urges his Megaladon through the Wall to gauge the effects. The Dire Shark dies. Hmmm, he’s about to transform into an earth elemental when Danko offers another way around…

Hmerrin finds that Damage Reduction is only good on normal attacks; it doesn’t help at all against the Magic Missles. It makes him a glum chum. Hearing sound advice from both Nira and Desdichado, he races to the Paladin, and stabs Merfolk ‘e’ on the way! (Desdichado ‘lays hands’ on Hmerrin, healing for 60)

Danko pouts… that was a well-planned Chain Lighting: at least he avoided harming himself! He gets his rod of absorbtion from his efficient quiver (ooc: would need to use a Hero Point if Danko did it after teleporting), calls to Gaffer and, together, the two heroes teleport on the other side of the prismatic wall! The Sorcerer has only seen his destination once, and is 19% off target (84%), but only ‘porting 25 feet: that is negligible A greater concern is because Gaffer is Huge, the space Danko wants to occupy is already occupied, and so the two actually appear at the nearest safe spot (See emailed map)

Nira’s delayed spell, is then cast to a targeted point the elf-girl can see on the ceiling of the cavern (point X,Y:21,22), causing a powerful tremor to strike the roof of the cavern. It shakes, it rumbles, and spreads across an 80’ radius from the epicenter. No one standing in the area of effect can move and has difficulty spellcasting for the next 6 seconds, and then the cavern starts collapsing. Howeve, because the roof is 60’ high, a much smaller radius strikes the floor, which has several effects.
1) First, all Merfolk and the Serpent are swimming not standing, so they can move before the roof collapses.
2) Second, Ramirez and Yrul see they are in the effect of the impending roof collapse, but NOT standing on the area where the floor is affected, so they can also move this round.
[ooc: Since Nira waited until after Hmerrin moved, the roof will collapse (and any effects of the collapse) at the end of the Heroes next turn (i.e. 36 damage (Ref15 for half) and are pinned underneath the rubble).]

.....OPPONENTS

The rumbles begin and the reaction of the Merfolk and the Serpent is not fear, but furious, volcanic anger. ”BLASPHEMERS! DESPOILERS OF SACRED SERENITY! KILL THEM ALL, EVERY THING FROM DIRT CITY!!”

The Merfolk swim and weave, but, in avoiding the quake, are getting crowded. All of them are now swimming 50 feet above the floor of the cavern.

The Merfolk are shouting back and forth to each other in Aquan, and Nira can relay that they are making a change in tactics. If the power of the cult (i.e. Magic Missle Tattoo) can’t hurt the Great Blasphemer (i.e. Nira), then the need to first slay the other one who is healing everyone. As many as they can, change their target to Desdichado.

Merfolk ‘a’, ‘f’, ‘g’, ‘l’, ‘o’, and ‘p’ have to use all their precious seconds to swim away from the rumbling danger zone.

Merfolk ‘m’, ‘n’, ‘s’, ‘t’ appear Ready to use their Cult Tattoo, waiting for a particular action…

Merfolk ‘e’, ‘q’, and ‘h’ don’t have a line of sight on Dez because Gaffer is in the way. 15 Magic Missles target the huge water elemental. Gaffer takes 48 damage.

That leaves Merfolk ‘c’, ‘d’, ‘I’, ‘j’, ‘k’, and ‘r’. 30 Magic Missles unerringly strike the Paladin! (Dez takes [21 19 14, 13, 18, 16] = 101 damage)

The Great Serpent, glittering scales and eyes fascinating anyone who is not fighting for their lives (i.e. everyone!), glares at Nira, and … defensively greater teleports.

Yrûl blinked. Snakey had gone! Where was that slippery beast? Oh yeah! There, right across the cavern – the cavern that was shaking and dropping debris all over the place. She thought about following. She could, but decided against it. Who was to say where debris would fall and it looked to her like she’d be stepping into a whole host of angry fish-people. Instead she moved North to the opposite wall. She was safe from any harm – or so she believed. Peabo (Alertness Ioun Stone) assured her that he’d keep watch for any trouble.
Well, if we are going to be useful again – oh, and well done there Snickit – we need to super sneaky. Best if they don’t see us coming. Shh. Sneaky time. Yrûl conversed with her little army of ‘friends’ oblivious that she was sending her bizarre thoughts to the rest of The Tide. From the gloom she kept an eye upon – Syd! (the sling) What was she doing? Syd, don’t fidget! You’ll get your chance soon...ish. I mean, we are underwater and slinging isn’t the done thing here. Yes, I know it’s not fair, but you’ll just have to be patient.[i]

"Well, this is cosy." Gaffer murmurs to the others as magic missiles collide into his watery form, and everyone gathers within the corner. At least the serpent won't have an easy time joining the fight now.

Caught between healing his ally and hindering the enemy, Gaffer hesitates for a moment before conjuring an orb of light and sending it deeper into the cave, where it explodes in a blinding radiance. While the light distracts the enemies, he swims to better position himself between Des and the merfolk, using his enlarged form to give the paladin cover.

Well that didn't go the way she was expecting! At least they're all grouped in closer now. That gives Nira another idea.

She isn't quite sure where the big fish is, but she can only guess it's close enough to her that it's waiting for her to move and then bite her in the back. She doesn't want to give it the chance.

Nira tucks her staff way and uses her newly acquired rod to quickly get into position to cast a spell with a little more 'oompf'.

Water Battle, round 4 – Well, this is cosy – coDM SteveK

.....HEROES

Yrûl moves to the north wall to stay away from any debris, and keeps a close watch for any trouble. Looking down the tunnel, it seems to curve away like the one before.

Gaffer seeks to use his bulk to batter protect Desdichado since he is the focus of all the Merfolk. And then he sends a Sunburst spell into the ceiling at the far end of the cavern. The damage manages to avoid everyone on the cavern floor, but catches 12 Merfolk! And they are sensitive to light… Two wounded (a and e) die, one (t) saves, and the others are grievously wounded!

Desdichado swiftly heals himself, concerned his inability to swim makes it like shooting a fish in a barrel.

Hmerrin notes ‘e’ is dead-in-the-water, so his flying pass goes into ‘d’ with him now eye-to-eye with ‘k’ and ‘l’.

Ramirez dodges next to Nira then attempts to defensively cast Greater Invisibility. It doesn’t work.
While the Merfolk are 50 feet away, straight up, there’s no telling what the Scintillating Serpent can do...

Nira gets an unexpected result, but with the Merfolk grouped, tries something else… She puts away her Quicken Rod, stows her staff, uses the Quicken rod to defensively cast a Quickened Teleport, and THEN uses a second Miracle to simulate a Holy Word spell! She kills every Merfolk in the room except for Merfolk ‘n’ and ‘p’.

Danko, with a lot less targets, tries a fireball spell. The bead streaks unerringly to a point right in front of Merfolk ‘p’, and instead of a ball of fire, becomes a ball of super-heated water. No matter, it is the same effect. One dead Merfolk.

.....OPPONENTS

The rumbles continue, and blocks of basalt fall from the ceiling, smashing away the natural bioluminescence and sculpted rocks, plunging ¾ of the cavern into eternal darkness. The earthquake, centered on the ceiling, brings down 80 feet of rock in the cavern that is only 60 feet high. It completely buries much of the cavern, including the entrance to the other tunnel, trapping Yrul behind tons of rock!

The rock also effectively cuts off Ramirez’ light from going around a corner, but that has minimal effect on most heroes.

Merfolk ‘n’ is the only Guardian left. She is also badly hurt and blind. She swims higher until she bumps against the cavern ceiling, punching her spear in short thrusts as if to keep away any attacker.

From behind the scintillating Prismatic Wall, the glittering head of the Serpent pushes through. Its eyes take in the destruction of the cavern, the unmoving bodies of so many Merfolk, and the current locations of the surface dwellers, and its rainbow eyes fall on Ramirez. She headbutts the bard with her sharp horns (hit) and then reaches around with flashing teeth (miss!) before withdrawing back into the Prismatic Wall (ooc: reach). (Ramirez takes 29 damage)

Callie rightfully protested her innocence. ’Well, I can’t complain about the dark, OR not getting crushed to little bitty pieces. I just wish we knew what was happening out there. Really, who knows how much rock there is between us and the gang? Seriously guys, I was hoping for an answer there. Anyone? Er, no Dabz ‘miles’ is NOT an acceptable answer. The whole cavern complex wasn’t that big. So, perhaps we should just creep along a bit – just to let the others know what’s waiting up ahead. After all, they don’t any nasty surprises.’ With the decision made Yrûl and her ‘gang’ headed of along the corridor, delighting in the darkness and taking considerable solace from the echoes of falling rock as they would further mask the sound of her approach – not that she intended making ANY sound.

Nira shakes her head. She tried to stop this fight from happening, but the merfolk just wouldn't listen.

That prismatic wall might be a problem. "We can't go through it, well, we shouldn't. We can bypass it though. We make a hole in the rock here and step around it" Nira indicates the stone alongside the prismatic wall. "We disintegrate it or stone shape it or something and make our own passage around it. Just a thought."

"I'm going to go get Yrul. She shouldn't be alone, even with her friends."

Nira swims as fast as she can to get to the other side of the room.

Yrûl decides to creep along a bit, not intending to make ANY sound. She finds that, in another 60 feet, she can see what looks like the end of the tunnel: an area where the ceiling is higher, and the stone looks very, very smooth. She is keeping a running monologue with the others through Nira’s Telepathic Bond.

Gaffer the Huge Water Elemental swims up to Merfolk ‘n’ and, using his reach against the blind guardian. The thrusting spear must have poked right when he swung, and generated a miss.

Ramirez notes the creature can go through its own wall without a problem, and the heroes don’t have a lot of room to maneuver. The Bard readies a shot…

Hmerrin is impressed at the one big snake. He calls for some plans, then slides over to have a shot at Gigantor. He slides to float at the top of the tunnel entrance [ooc: K,8 at 15’ up. J,8 is solid rock], and gets ready to stab.

Nira shakes her head: she DID try and stop a fight after all. The elf-girl knows about Prismatic Walls, and that they can be attuned to the caster. She suggests bypassing the spell by going through the rock, and then goes to get Yrûl, calling for her to shadowstep back to the rest of the Tide.

Desdichado uses his seldom-used ability to ‘double-down’ on his Lay of Hands to channel energy like a cleric. Hmerrin, Ramirez, Danko, and Desdichado feel the positive burst. (heal for 41hp)

Danko smirks, telepathically calling a taunt, and readies a spell ... [ooc: “Delay” is the PC waits until the end of the PC combat turn. “Ready” is the PC waits to interrupt the opponent’s combat turn. DM will interpret Player wants Danko to “Ready”]

A few rocks continue to slide, but the underwater earthquake that lowered the roof subsided.

Merfolk ‘n’ continues to defensively poke with his spear, keeping the ceiling and wall to her back.

All is quiet behind the Prismatic Wall until…

With a sliding of rock, the Glittering Serpent emerges from the rock behind Ramirez! (By Domi’s Fist: it can Burrow!) Quick as… a snake… the Bard whirls and gets off his shot, but it doesn’t penetrate as well as expected, and the holy properties don’t activate. Hmerrin stabs, and finds his halbard is just like the bard’s arrow!! Danko casts, and feels a tension that he is able to overcome [ooc: DM rolled +21 spell penetration, which worked]… and then the spell fizzles against a lilac scale!!! Then, before their eyes, some of the wounds close on their own… and the heroes learn several things all at once:

1) The Tide have seen this before: the Serpent has Damage Resistance/Adamantine
2) The Serpent, like the Merfolk, isn’t evil, so the holy properties don’t affect it.
3) The Serpent has Spell Resistance!
4) The Serpent is immune to Cold!
5) The Serpent has Fast Healing!

And then, displaying an intelligence from experience across the ages, it doesn’t bite or cast a spell, but merely uses it’s enormous head to Bull Rush Ramirez. [ooc: holding a bow, Ram doesn’t get an AOO] The Bard stumbles back 10 feet… through the Prismatic Wall. (Ramirez make 7 saving throws)

At Nira’s message Yrûl paused. ’oh, hello Nira. It’s all peachy here, except well, there aren’t any peaches. The corridor gets bigger and super smooth. Just so you know and ..uh. Yes I can rejoin you, but….well I can only step through the shadows so far each day. You aren’t THAT far away though; so I can if you want?’ Yrûl awaited Nira’s decision, but moved back the way she’d come in order to minimise how far she’d need to ‘step’ should that be necessary. The light has gone dim, so that's not a good sign. "I think it might have swallowed Ram!"

With the serpent having reappeared, Gaffer turns back to look upon it, the full size of the creature truly sinking in.

Then he sees his ally forced through the wall. "Ram! Are you ok?" he lets out an urgent mental call.

Raising a hand, he tries to conjure the flames he often relies on, wanting to rest the creatures defences further. He is expecting to at least see a burst of boiling water like he saw earlier, but the spell only fizzles, drowned out by the water.

Desdichado concludes the snake cannot be reasoned with. So, with his Greataxe, he moves forward and swings, but misses. He does, however, leave himself open to a lightning fast strike by enormous fangs! They bite with a muscle-numbing poison! (AOO: Dez takes 35 damage and save Fort DC 30; frequency 1/round for 6 rounds; effect 1 Dex)

Yrûl converses with Nira, and moves back the way she’d come, as silent as a shadow.

Nira contintues to try and get the surface drow unsplit from the party.

Gaffer is concerned about Ramirez, and tries to burn the giant serpent, but can’t penetrate its spell resistance.

Danko tries to turn Lila the Serpent into little bits of watery dust, but she saves and only takes 12 damage.

Hmerrin grimaces. The fighter can see well enough in the dim bioluminescence, and even in full dark would see just fine. He drops his halberd and swims in with adamantine battleaxe! The Serpent’s combat reflexes are incredible, and is shifts, biting quickly and releasing poison into the fighter’s arm! (AOO: Hmerrin takes 30 damage and save Fort DC 30; frequency 1/round for 6 rounds; effect 4 Dex)

Worse, she keeps ahold [ooc: Grab], and swims out of the rock … and through the Prismatic Wall.

Hmerrin and Desdichado can take AOOs, and they can see the monster did not leave any tunnel through the rock.

The words of the serpent call Gaffer to pause and question, "How does time work? If we lose this fight, they'll destroy our home, and we'll be sent back to fight them, angering them into destroying our home..." His mind runs off with the thought but finds no ending and he snaps back to the fight in time to see Danko dragged through the wall as well.

"If we can all get on the same side, we can put our own wall infront of the colourful one." He suggests to the others, but has no means to move either group to the otherside.

With the Lila out of sight, he starts casting to summon a purple worm in the upper area of the cavern, hoping it might be able to hold the serpent in place once it returns.

Seeing the wounds on his allies, he knows he'll need to help out with healing once his summons is done.

Of course there was no time for conversation, people were in peril – HER people; so she set off to see if she and her little team could do something about that. Facing the serpent again, Ramirez casts a spell which will hopefully prevent him from getting shoved through the wall again.

Actions: cast mislead Ramirez turns invisible(20 rounds effectively greater invisibility) and his new illusionary double(lasts concentration plus 3 rounds) moves over to J9 and appears to be drawing the bow while presenting a fake target. Ramirez moves to I12 and presses himself against the wall.

She is none too pleased to hear the voice of the fish in her head. "We came here to talk and tried to avoid a fight. Make no mistake, you were the one that started the hostilities."

Nira tries to assess how long the party have been in the water. "I'm pretty sure we still have a couple of minutes before it can leave this place. We just need to finish it off before that happens"

Gaffer wonders about the serpent’s words, is this a time-effect or is the creature really that old… effectively immortal? The druid starts summoning a purple worm, which, if not interrupted, will appear where he wishes at the beginning of his next turn.

Desdichado is thankful for his damage resistance (ooc: please take off your PCs DR), and nearly gives a possibly combat ending slice in response! He shakes off the poison without much problem.

Yrûl steps into the gloom, re-emerging at Nira’s side. The surface drow and surface elf see (AC.6.) ’We’re here to help.’ Yrûl informs her! And she keeps moving.

Hmerrin, springing to avoid an AOO (ooc: cool, didn’t know it did that!), grouses about the seal, but then recalls the Tide walked/swam 500’ of tunnel after passing the Seal, so, really, the Serpent is still behind the Seal… and through the Telepathic Bond and Ramirez, who is alone with the Serpent, the Tide knows it is still in the tunnel. Could somebody get rid of this wall or get us on the other side of that snake he asks plaintively?

Ramirez faces the serpent again, and Ramirez attempts to cast Mislead, but without defensively casting, the Serpent has an opportunity! Almost too fast to see, the Glittering Serpent has twisted around and thrust its teeth at the Bard! a spell which will hopefully prevent him from getting shoved through the wall again. (Ramirez takes 32 damage and save Fort DC 30; frequency 1/round for 6 rounds; effect 5 Dex). The spell will fizzle if Ramirez can’t make a Concentration check DC 47, but it really doesn’t matter, the Serpent doesn’t believe the figment anyways.

Nira smiles and gives a nod to Yrul, glad that she's safe. The ‘fish’ however, gets an ear-full. Nira is pretty sure they have a couple of minutes before it can leave this place. The fight just needs to end before then… She swims and casts Freedom of Movement on herself.

Yes, it was confrontational, but she wanted to get the serpent’s attention and hopefully have it distracted form eating everyone. Nira takes out a scroll of Mage's Disjunction. She had bought these in preparation for the fight with the maharajah, and is really glad to have a couple now.

She reads the scroll, targeting a space as high as she can at K12 that can still include 5ft of the wall in the burst. Her intent being to only cast it to hit the wall and none of her friends (and essentially remove their breathing magic!).

With no interruptions, Gaffer finishes his summons. Unfortunately the worm dominates much of the remaining space, and he's not even sure if it can breathe. Still, it's a hard creature and with a powerful bite.

Next he turns his mind to the injured. Ramirez looks very much worse for wear, Gaffer will swim over to him and place a watery hand on his shoulder, sending a wave of healing energy to him.

The purple worm sees no enemies nearby and waits for one to approach, shifting around in the water impatiently.

"We only came here to prevent the destruction of our lands, and were lead to believe that you would be the cause. If that's not the case, perhaps there's a way we can prevent further bloodshed? Water Battle, round 8 – – coDM SteveK

Yrûl provides what she thinks of as diplomacy while remaining hiding and aware. She does acknowledge she entered the ‘sanctuary’ but nothing was hurt until the fight started.

Ramirez, the poison coursing through his veins (ooc: poison is cumulative. The Bard is down 10 DEX, and must make 2 more saves Fort DC 30 or take 1 DEX and 3 DEX respectively) A defensive casting, and the Bard dim doors (ooc: no stated position, so DM is assuming he knows Nira’s plan and ‘doors far enough away. Placed at Q,5.) Ram talks about preventing an attack on Dirt City when the Maharaja breaks the seal.

Desdichado listens to Nira's advice and moves away from the wall himself. And so does Hmerrin (ooc: DM move for Nira's plan).

Nira uses a scroll of Mage's Disjunction which ends the Prismatic Wall. She then re-tries to get the serpent to be willing to discuss terms to prevent further bloodshed.

Gaffer summons a Purple Worm and puts it in the only space he can, then swims down to heal Ramirez.

The purple worm does sense an enemy, the Merfolk, so swims up 20 feet to get within reach for next round.

The colossal Glittering Serpent … pauses, then slowly moves to the entrance of the tunnel, telepathy continuing to be the means of communication, mind-to-minds. ”YOU ARE STRANGE. I HAVE NEVER SEEN A SURFACE DWELLER STOP FIGHTING UNTIL THEY HAVE WON OR ARE DEAD. YOU HAVE EARNED… A DELAY IF ONLY TO LEARN MORE.” When not fighting, the colossal snake is truly mesmerizing: purple and white scales reflect rainbows from Ramierez’ Daylight spell, and its eyes are a dizzying kaleidoscope of color. (Everyone except Yrul roll a Will save (DC 26) or be fascinated (See below for effect). Yrul was already fascinated and so is immune for 24 hours)

Yrûl was please that the fighting appeared to have stopped, if only possibly for a short time. Obviously she was a far superior diplomat to that which she’d believe. Still, there were a number of issues that were pressing. One was that she still wasn’t entirely sure what the snake was talking about. It all seemed rather ambiguous. Secondly, was the matter of the cave. That, she understood. She looked at the monumental pile of debris in the middle of the ‘room’ and then at Snickit and Dabz. Those two little guys were eager-beavers, but they really weren’t going to make much of an impression on that pile.
”I could probably do the Word thing if that helps.” She offered apologetically. ”If it’s any help I’m certain that Snickit, Dabz, Syd, Callie, Aggerz, Peabo and of course Sir Tolmenedes would ALL be happy to do the same.” She concluded with a hopeful smile never realising that she’d cited seven names that the snake would likely take as her speaking for her seven comrades rather than her magical items.

Desdichado snaps out of his stupor with the gentle nudge from Gaffer.

He's as confused as the rest of them about what might cause Lila to attack Dirt City. Could the seal have some sort of mind control magic he wonders to Nira.

"Also, she said she can leave. I thought the seal was supposed to prevent that from happening. It would seem that we don't yet know all of the pieces here."

The paladin decides, as usual, that honesty is the best policy.

"My lady," he says and does his best to bow underwater, "I'm going to tell you a tale that on my honor as a paladin of Domi I swear is true..." (Diplomacy: 32).

He begins to relate as best he can what has happened over the past few what, days? hours?: The fight with the Rakshasa Maharaja on their plane who called forth his "destroyers"; returning to a destroyed Dirt City and meeting with Gimp who told them about them what the destroyers and done and empowered the Teucri device to time travel and fix the problem at the Woldian Gods' request; coming here - they don't even know where "here" is, to be quite honest - seeing the seal and entering to investigate.

The heroes as a whole feel there are more pieces to this puzzle still, and that the Seal is the only place to learn more in the short time they have before the Seal breaks on its own. And that, as Danko knows best, is when the shenanigans will begin.

(Know Planes or Arcana DC 30 Highlight to display spoiler: { the thoughts of the Maharaja manipulating the Tide to get Lila angry to destroy Dirt City, could only happen if the Tide already did it before the Maharaja was killed feels like a dead-end magical time paradox loop. [ooc: and frankly makes the DM's brain hurt!] It is near certain that the Tide is not the trigger.}

Lila nods to allow the Tide to return to the cliffside entrance and the Seal, and she slowly swims behind the last hero. After casting Heal on Merfolk 'n', the last Merfolk is left to guard the partially destroyed grotto.

It takes another minute for everyone to get back to the cliffside entrance. The water pressure continues to be uncomfortable. All except Gaffer Fort DC 18 for 13 damage (save negates).

The heroes are able to gather on the basalt shelf around the Seal. Above them is the cliffface stretching upwards and below them, likewise down. The face of the Maharaja glows a pale, sickly light.

Lila, the Glittering Serpent, doesn't leave the tunnel, but doesn't look very convinced that words are the proof of action.

It seems our heroes have the initiative

”So...uh...what do we do now?” Yrûl asked glancing hopefully at Sir Tolmenedes. He seemed somewhat cleverer than her other little friends. Then again, it didn’t take a lot to be cleverer than Snickit and Dabz. Loveable as they were, they were decidedly like a pair of impetuous teenagers.
Sir Tolly wasn’t very forthcoming, so she folded her arms and awaited the conclusions of minds sharper than her own.
”Would perhaps a magic Forgetting spell work on it? Maybe the seal would forget to break” Yrûl offered with no expectation that it was even remotely a good idea. Of course she’d say nothing to Syd -who’d suggested it. There was no point in nhurting her new sling’s feelings.

Gaffer is... at a loss. Conversing with the serpent is something he would personally rather avoid, and inspecting the seal is simply beyond the bounds of his knowledge. He can swim better than the rest. So he does that.

Swimming 100 feet quickly up the cliff face, back to the group, and then 100 feet down the cliff below and back as well. Looking carefully as he does so for anything beyond what they have seen so far.

There is a lot that doesn't make sense here. What is the point of a seal keeping Lila in if she doesn't care about leaving or have any animosity towards the surface? If she is lying and we break the seal early, she could swim past us and unleash the tidal wave before we could get back there. If she is not the cause of that part of the destruction, then what is?

Nira studies the seal once more. "I don't think we're the trigger here. That is, I don't think the maharajah had this conditional on us appearing. It would make for a very strange time loop scenario that hurts my brain to think about" Hmerrin's idea isn't a bad one. "Breaking it now is one way to go"

She tries to think of other possibilities. When the seal breaks could it take mental control of Lila and direct her to attack the surface? It's just speculation. Something is going to happen when the seal breaks. It's just there's no way to tell what that will be. Nira responds to Ram "I don't think she's lying. If she wanted to be rid of us she'd block the tunnel now with another prismatic wall and leave us out here. My bigger concern is that she knows how to teleport. If the seal breaks she could go wherever she wants. We're taking a gamble here."

She then has a question for Lila. "Have you ever tried moving past the seal?"

Most of the heroes don't know what to make of the situation. Gaffer does a quick check of the cliffs above and below with no clarification.

Hmerrin questions what would happen if they broke the Seal early! He can't tell what Lila is thinking, but Nira is more savvy to the Glittering Serpent and notes complete ambivalence.

Desdichado asks what may have been here before Lila arrived. She doesn't know and doesn't have much interest in the question.

Nira and Ramirez again look at the Seal, very very closely. They can see it is keyed to Lila: she cannot pass beyond this point as long as the Seal is intact, and only the death of the Maharaja can break the Symbol. But with two of them looking very closely, something else is revealed: a magical trap!

As near as they can tell, when the Seal breaks, not only will Lila be able to leave (if she ever wanted to), but the breaking of the Seal will summon a swarm of animated picks and mauls inside the grotto!

Lila watches from the tunnel. Nira can tell she is wary of the heroes: they haven't convinced her of their good intentions.

"I can go back into the tunnels and start the clean up effort while some of us look at the seal. Yrûl tampering with it sounds like a good bet."

Assuming no objections, Gaffer will swim back into the tunnel to look at the cavern, and inspect it to get a good understanding of what they'll need to do. It might be that clearing the rubble and creating a few walls of stone to form a roof is their limit for now.

Ramirez informs Lila of what they have found on the seal. When the seal breaks, it looks like it will cause some damage inside the grotto. Since we are planning to repair it anyway, with your permission we will try to break the seal and then clean up ALL the damage. Let's get all the merfolk out first, along with anything that could be damaged inside the grotto by animated picks and mauls.

The heroes look about to orient themselves. They are all deep underwater, standing (or swimming nearby) on the shelf of rock halfway down a cliff they can neither see the top nor bottom, and in front of them is the Maharaja's Seal. In the cliff, there is the 20 feet diameter tunnel and they know it extends 500 feet until it gets to the damaged grotto. Blocking the entrance is Lila, a colossal horned serpent, scaled in purples and whites.

They put out several ideas: disarm the trap spell on the Seal (Yrul), break the Seal (Ramirez), or return to the grotto and begin cleaning it as agreed to with Lila (Desdichado, Gaffer, Danko). The Bard and Mystic Theurge try continuing to persuade Lila of their good intentions. And Hmerrin can't think of anything except staying here too long under pressure is not a good idea.

No one can get to the Grotto while Lila blocks the path (Desdichado, Gaffer, and Danko can't get to the Grotto by swimming or walking), and her rainbow eyes and resplendent body calls to be watched and adored (no magical compunction since everyone has saved or been shaken aware). "NO, NO MORE DAMAGE. ANY FURTHER DAMAGE TO THE SACRED GROTTO IS ON YOUR HEADS. I WILL BE WATCHING THE GROTTO." The Glittering Serpent twists upon herself and speeds back around the subtle bend towards the entrance of the grotto, 500 feet away. one of the heroes can currently see her.

Nira casts a heal spell on each of Hmerrin and Yrul. "I can't see a magical way to disarm it. Anything I do will likely trigger it. So if it's going to break anyway, then maybe there's only one other option" Nira is in favor of giving Yrul a try.

"No pressure Yrul. If you fail it will only incur the wrath of a colossal fish that will destroy the world"

She tries to give the shadowdancer as much luck as she can.

Yrul studies the Seal closely, fingers not quite touching, watching the effects through all of her senses (and those of her inanimate friends). It's going to be a tricky, tricky magical trap: there has been nothing in her experience like it! Nira confirms the spells used have been nothing in the normal lexicon of arcane or divine spells; not even for a BloodWitch!

Some preparation and healing occurs, but it is the Tide's general consensus that they let the Surface Drow make the attempt. After all, the worst that could happen is the Seal is broken early, and that's what's gonna happen if they do nothing, so why not?

It takes an entire minute for Yrul to test and probe, one supple hand slowly sliding around spells and the image of the Maharaja until it is resting near what she believes to be the trigger. A flick of a nail either way could disable the trap... or release all the magic all at once!

The tension for the other heroes is... quite high.

And the water pressure continues to press upon the heroes. All except Gaffer Fort DC 18 for 18 damage (save negates)

Yrûl set to work, again shrugging off the effects of the water pressure as it were but a light overcoat. She thought about taking a deep, steadying breath, but was reminded by Sir Tolly that she really shouldn’t attempt to breathe at the moment. She nodded in thanks for the timely reminder and then with the barest twitch of the wrist undid the ward – or so she hoped. It wasn’t her best work, but it was also far from her worst. She looked around quickly. Had anything terrible happened?

Desdichado trots down the tunnel to get to the Grotto, he was unable to do so before because Lila completely blocked the entrance to the tunnel. It takes a minute, and he finds he is still unable to get to the grotto: there is a colossal serpent and another Prismatic Wall in the way!

The Tide collectively hold their breath, Hmerrin and Ramirez needing to feel useful and prepare for a fight just in case...

Yrul, with a little bit of luck and guidance, with the barest twitch of her wrist, alters the contingency spell inside the Seal! Nira's arcane sight is hindered by the overpowering aura of the Seal itself, but fighting through the radiance, she is able to confirm a key element of the secondary nefarious spell has changed: the spell can't go off!

It is a tense 48 seconds as Yrul has to gently, delicately withdraw her hand from the Seal, retracing the path of her fingers to not make other, unwanted changes, an expert at work! As her hand leaves the spells entwined about the Seal, it begins to melt like liquid silver, until it is no more than a blob on the basalt: the same phenomenon as when they killed the Maharaja!

Can heroes sweat underwater? If they do, could they notice? Did they do it?

Desdichado is the first to notice a change: the Prismatic Wall is removed, and Lila flashes by, grabbing the paladin in her jaws! The moment of shock at the sudden assault fades as Dez realizes he isn't hurt at all, no teeth, no poison. In seconds, Lila with Desdichado are back at the entrance of the tunnel with Hmerrin and Ramirez, and there, the Glittering Serpent puts Dezzy back down.

"HUNDREDS OF SURFACE TOOLS, AKIN TO THOSE SOLD YEARS AGO TO MY MERFOLK*, APPEARED IN THE SACRED GROTTO, BUT THEY DID NOT ATTACK. INSTEAD, THEY MERELY WERE ILLUSIONS, THEN FADED AWAY."

"YOUR WORDS MATCH THE EVENTS AND YOUR ACTIONS, SO I MUST CONCLUDE WHAT YOU HAVE SAID WAS TRUE. THANK YOU. I WILL NOT GO FORTH AND WILL INSTEAD RESTORE THE SACRED SPACES AND MY GUARDIAN MERFOLK."

"THANK YOU."

At her words, the underwater scene blurs in front of the heroes, and suddenly... The Tide is standing at the refugee camp in the ruined foyer of Tide House. The refugees are nervously watching.

"Um... you sorta blinked and then nothing happened. When are you going to go?"
"Is that the way it was supposed to go?"
"Why are you all wet?"

It had been fraught and certainly the most important tampering that she’d ever done in her life, but with the help and support of all her friends she’d succeeded! She nodded in appreciation of a job well done as she stood. ’Thanks everyone. I’m certain all those positive thoughts really helped.’ She mentally sent to everyone.

The next thing she knew, she was back at the Tide House! How strange.

In answer to the question Yrûl smiled. ”Oh, wet, yes – that would be because of all the water. There was lots of it. Yeah, it was the water that did it.” She replied, as unhelpfully as ever and just as oblivious to the fact.

There really wasn’t much that she could do about being wet, not that it troubled her overly as she always travelled light. Her meagre attire would dry soon enough.

He guffaws for a good couple of minutes before finally regaining control of himself.

"Yrul, you've definitely earned your keep. And an ale. Several ales.
And soon as we get a tavern standing, we're gonna get you some."

To the refugees, he grins.
"One down," he announces happily.

"And we're gonna need a serious nap before taking on the next one. Not to mention prepping for the environment. What is the next one, fire? Wardd helps us if we end up in a volcano or something."

Hmerrin laughs. He laughs long and hard, praising Yrul's skills. The Shadowdancer herself seems immune to the popping in and out and all about: well, she has had a lot of practice!

Ramirez congratulates the Surface Drow girl of avoiding a really terrible battle. He calls for a change of clothes, but stops non-plussed as Tide House is still in absolute ruins... he doesn't have a room to go to.

Both Hmerrin and Desdichado consider preparing before hitting Gaffer's Time Stone for the next monster: is it Fire or Air or something else? They are sure Gimp sang a poem a while back.

Danko wants to talk about how the heroes might be being played for suckers.

Gaffer and Nira seem to need a little time to take in the sudden change of scenery.

The paladin needs to climb a rubble pile to get a better view of Dirt City other than their immediate surroundings. When he does so, he can see there has been a change. The harbor area including Grubbertown, the Scrum, the Free School, and Dockside don't look like they were destroyed from a huge wave, but they are still absolutely destroyed. They look like they are now included in the swath of destruction, like a child running through leaves, goes from Keyhole, over Tide House, and to the Prince’s Castle. Whatever monster did that, must have then gone on to level the harbor area too.

The heroes have rightfully identified several tasks to do: get into dry clothing, rest and recuperate, and then prepare for the next challenge before using Gimp's next charge in the Time Stone.

Our heroes have the initiative.

What the others have said makes sense.

"Isn't the next one air?" She asks, then recites the starting line of Gimp's jingle "Sea, Air, Star-liv’ed"

"If it's air then it might be a good idea if everyone had some way to fly. If we end up 10,000ft in the air it's could be a nasty fall"

She's definitely in favor of good night's sleep before tackling the next beast. Hopefully there can be another diplomatic solution.

Could perhaps someone do that magicky thing whereby everything becomes dry and clean? That would be great. Other than that, I’ll probably need a towel. And a bed. Yes, resting for a bit does seem like a good idea. Oh, and just so you know, most of us can’t fly – except for the ones that can.” She helpfully pointed to her fluttering ioun stones, Sir Tolly (iridescent bumblebee),Callie (lavender and green butterfly), Peabo (dark blue butterfly) and Aggerz (pale green dragonfly). All these ‘insects’ were decidedly crystalline in appearance and there really wasn’t a lot of wing flapping, but they hovered around well enough.

I'm not sure why, but I thought things might have been somewhat restored. We may have to stop them all before we see any real change.

Gaffer drops his elemental form now that they are back and joins the others in giving Yrûl a pat on the back.

"That was elegantly done." He smiles, glad it was resolved without the fight he expected. To Danko he adds "I was worried about that as well, but the hidden part of the seal seems like it would have given her enough motive without us present."

Water and Fire are the two foes Gaffer was most worried about on a personal level, so he is glad to be done with one of them. Air should be where he is most comfortable, in theory. For their next challenge. "I can prepare a few rounds of the Air Walk spell, but it wouldn't be a bad idea for everyone to have a back up in case the magic is dispelled."

He moves to cast a heal over Des as he still seems rather injured, then Gaffer steps aside for ten minutes, communing with the skies to help ensure a comfortable rest.

"What flying options do we have? Potions of course, but anything else? Oh, and Gaffer noticed earlier that the 'air' destruction seemed to come from tornadoes. I suppose we should be ready for that, too."

”I just did what I could, but like I said - we had lots of help.” Yrûl smiled at all the praise. She wanted to be sure that her little friends didn’t feel left out. She also thanked Ramirez for the drying and cleaning of her clothes. That really did feel a lot better.

”The potion sounds like a good idea. Do we need some for Fire too? We aren’t very fire proof at all. If the next place is like that watery realm, but all fiery, I’ll be crisped up in no time at all!” Getting some useful remedies and contingencies from the catacombs seemed like a good idea.

Ramirez does that magicky thing to dry folks off, Gaffer and Desdichado contribute to a quick heal, which has the added benefit of removing the odd cut and bruise on the Refugees as well!

Danko is a little worried about having manipulation shenanigans done on the Tide, but Gaffer assures the Dragon Sorcerer that the added trap on the Seal would have probably done the same job if the Tide weren't there.

Nira recalls that the first monster, whatever it was, of Gimp's poem and the first monster they went to was water, so assumes the next one will be the air monster. All of the heroes focus on getting air magic through memorization or the Catacombs. Although there is some worry about the fire monster by Gaffer and Yrul...

Hmm, all that floating aroundness…..I bet there are less shadows” Yrûl commented a little glumly. The lack of shadows was a concern, but it wasn’t a given that they’d be absent. After all, typically, where there was like, there were shadows…..except in that pesky Maharajah’s realm. She trusted the others to equip her appropriately.
