The other side of the gate is nothing but a cold, damp mist. You can barely see your hand in front of your face. Visibility is limited to 10', with neither darkvision nor low light vision providing any relief. Sounds are muffled -- voices are indistinct more then 10 feet away, inaudible more than 20 ft away.
Even as the Shield begin to move, the thickness of the mist increases. Visibility reduces even further.

Stohp finds that True Seeing does not help with visibility. The mists are real, and the thickening fog obscures her magical sight just as easily as mundane sight.
Stock and Zanderallen set about with practical matters. The dwarf sums up the situation. He also enters a rage briefly to once again take a deep whiff of their surroundings. He smells nothing but his comrades. OOC - What is the duration of that effect please?
The paladin retrieves a length of rope. He probably wants everyone to grab one.
However, Bartomus decides to try Armalad's idea. Turning himself into a column of air, he flies upward. He is quickly lost to view.

Bartomus got to ten. He paused in his wind form and realized that really nothing had changed - nothing at all. He sighed.
Then he started lowering himself back down. He cast a light spell on himself and started glowing, becoming a swirling mass of moving air and glowing light. He also started singing, over and over in various tones an impromptu verse.
"There once was a dwarf named Stock, who wasn't nearly as tall as Stohp. His raging had quite a knack for making Klink's hammer go whack while aiding Zander's powerful attacks."
Cast light spell on himself. Performance roll for a 13 - Not sure Bartomus should quit his day job for a singing career! ;-)

He starts handing some rope to the glowing whirlwind and then just shrugs, "Stay where you can see someone Bart."

Bartomus casts a light spell, making his part of the mist slightly brighter than the rest of the mist. Fortunately, as he descends, the Shields catch sight of the brightness, as well as the awful poetry, and shout him down near them.
Zanderallen passes out the rope and everyone ties off.
Stock picks a direction. The Shields move out.
Stohp prepares to map. But finds there is nothing to see.
The cold mist hangs about as you make your way forward. You are cut off from all sound from without. Even the noise from your own movement seems muted as this fog dampens sound and limits all sight to a mere three paces. You break out into a cold shivering sweat due to the humidity. As if to further sink your spirits, you begin to itch where your garments chafe your wet clammy skin. In this glum and irritable state, you begin to imagine that the Wold around you has left you forever and you are isolated and alone in an unending land of evil mist.
Minutes pass. Or hours? Or days?
Then, without warning, you look down and find yourselves on a road. The mists part, pulling back to reveal a 10' wide road stretching out before you. The road is clear, but the mist still hangs to either side of it.

Even if there's nothing to see she can track how far they are going. In featureless caves the only way to track distance is to know how far you are stepping and keep track of that which is a skill just as usable here. Of course in the strange nothing realm just because you took 200 paces to get somewhere doesn't mean you can go 200 paces back to get back to where you were.

When the fog parted and they saw that there was a roadway ahead of them. Bartomus smiled and changed into a large earth elemental. He took a few moments and used the tremors of the ground beneath them to get a sense of what if anything might be to eitherside of the roadway.
tremor sense has a 60' radius. I also rolled perception if that's needed and got a 22. Bad poetry? Ah come on coach ;-) .

The response is audible to all. Several disembodied whispers, each emitting most bone chilling chuckling any of you have ever heard. All PCs Will Save DC 20 vs Fear. Autosave if Immune to Fear. However, neither Luck bonuses nor Resistance bonuses impact the save. Failure - PC is Shaken. Failure by more than 5, PC is Frightened. Failure by more than 10, PC is Panicked.
A last whisper, "Then, you must meet the wolves!"

Shadows move in the mist, still too thick to make out more than an occasional form moving. Sounds pierce the air. A sniff. A footfall. A panting. The smell of wet fur becomes distinct.

The frown stays but she turns her attention to the howls closing in on them, trying to position herself between her allies so that whatever creatures can't close with her immediately.

Delia takes a couple steps ? toward Zanderallen. She reluctantly stuffs her frightened hawk into a bag of holding.
The mists roll back away from the edge of the road, now providing the Shields a 40' view to either side. Stepping into view are a lot of very large, very mean looking wolves.
From the east, from still within the mists, a creature emits a bone chilling howl. The supernatural effect buckles even the strongest psyche.
All Creatures Will Save DC 20 vs Fear Effect. (Luck and Resistance bonuses DO apply) Failure - -4 penalty on attacks, saves, skill checks and AC Success - -2 penalty on attacks, saves, skill checks and AC Those immune to Fear Effects suffer no penalty.
As if on signal, the wolves bound at the Shields. Most move to cut off the front and rear of the party.
Stock drinks his potion. Stohp fires a tanglefoot bag at W11. Her toss is true. The wolf is soon encased in quickly hardening resin.

With Stock going east and spells going south and east, Zander moves to the west to engage the wolves attacking the air elementals. Seeing the wolves back away and move around, Bartomus got a sense that they were beating back the threat and the howl pierced his mind. Bartomus shook. He broke out in an instant sweat. He gulped and chanted a spell to call down lightning. That would work, he told himself.

Delia, having no way to be immune to fear, is in fact being affected by the howls. She decides the right flank needs some shoring up and directs her shots that way. The extra time she had to take to line up her first few shots in spite of shaky breathing made her rush the last 2, sending them wide.

The howling was annoying. Bart shrugged the latest cry off and stepped forward slightly. See two wolves in a line, including the one he tried lighting up moments ago that ran away slightly singed. He smiled and called down yet another bolt aimed at the two wolves.
Willsave now 22 with the penalty and total adjusted. Aiming bolt - 30 long at W7 and W11 - 3d6 for 14 points Reflex Save against 18 to only take half.
If any of the wolves somehow survive the round Stohp will try to grapple them and prevent them from acting. 33 to grapple.

Zanderallen moves up to W9 The wolf snaps at him, but misses. The paladin strikes hard.
Delia compensates for the howling reverberating in her head. She drops W7.
W9 and W10 flee back into the mists. All is quiet.
The penalties from the howling are still in effect. There were three rounds with howls, so PCs not immune to fear are at a minimum -6 on AC, atk rolls, saves, and skill checks.

With a laying on of hands Domi allows me to restore the resolve, and I have various restorative magics." ================== Know (Rel): 18 Does Zander think Lesser Restoration, Dispel Magic, or curing the shaken condition (Mercy) would help remove the fear penalty?

Armalad gives an update on her remaining spells, while Joker and the Air Elemntals hover nearby.
Stohp asks about relief from the effects of the howling.
Delia sets Hawky on her shoulder and tries to soothe the bird. The ranger's keen senses pick up A LOT of footfalls. There are more creatures out there. In all directions. And they are closing on you. Fast.
Zanderallen considers ways to remove the fear affecting his comrades. Of the three options he thinks about, only the Mercy removing the Shaken condition seems likely to impact this fear-based, but non-magical, effect.
Though, accordingly to Delia, you may not have a lot of time.....

Over a dozen small wolves fairly explode out of the mists and into the Shields. The wolves are about 3' in length, with a silvery coat reflecting the glimmer of the mists. They are also very quick.
Four attack Stock. Two miss the giant dwarf. But the other two bite hard. Furthermore, they don't let go. They remain clamped to Stock's legs. Stock takes 27 and 26 hp damage.
Four others gang up on Bart. All four hit the taur. And all four jaws remain clamped on him. Bart takes 23, 18, 24, and 29 hp damage
Four more streak for Stohp, gracefully leaping over the Spike Stones. The spell does serve to break up the wolves' charge and costs them time. None are able to attack, yet.

Bartomus swung his glave at a spot along the side of one of the wolves of the four that were biting and keeping a hold on him. Then he tried for a hit on the next one, but no success. He bellowed in frustration.

Any further discussion is cut short by a wolf attaching itself to his leg. "Get off" he yells in pain. I thought I specified Armalad cast her overland flight spell when the party decided to press on but I'm not sure if I did or not

Stohp assumes a defensive position, hoping to keep the wolves occupied.

Bartomus bellowed in pain while being grateful houfor the added stoneskin. Then he got an idea.
He threw out a curing spell to himself and the Shields. Then he turned into a stone elemental of huge size and let his weight push on the wolves.

Stock tries to shake a wolf loose, but the effort is in vain. The dwarf connects a couple times on Wolf 2, wounding it.
Bart casts a healing spell. Unfortunately Zanerallen and Stock are more than 30' from the seriously injured taurs. Bart and Stohp healed for 35 hp. The taur calls upon his druidic powers to change form. As he expands into a huge elemental, all four wolves break contact rather than get crushed.
Armalad unleashes a hail of arrows into the wolves. All hit targets grunt in pain at the impact. Wolf 5 is down.
Delia continues her own barrage on the wolves near Bart. She drops Wolf 6 and adds another arrow to the wounded Wolf 7.

The elementals break off and try to snatch the wolves, but the creatures are able to avoid the vortexes.

Bartomus had frozen. He was locked in fanged grip of the two wolves and just froze. The damage continued and then he felt the warmth of healing give him some focus in the here and now. He slammed his fist down on the one wolf that was wounded and finally scored something of a hit while the second attach missed. He then channelled some additional healing energy into himself.
Attack to the attached W7 with a 29 to hit, for 15 points damage. The second one missed. CMW on myself for another 17 - Sorry about not posting yesterday, got distracted in the day and lost track of things.

As the last wolf finally falls, the mists evaporate.
The Shields finds themselves on a road running through a deciduous forest in early fall. A single sun shines above. The air is brisk but not overly cold. The fall colors of the foliage on each side of the road are spectacularly colorful. Birds chirp happily from somewhere in the trees.
Behind them, a range of jagged mountains rise majestically into the cloudless sky. Before them, the road meanders ahead, before dropping downhill and curving to the right, lost to view.
It is astonishingly pleasant. Except for all the blood and the bodies of dead wolves everywhere, you'd have thought you were in a completely new location.
