Monster of Air

The heroes go about their businesses to prepare for the next monster, planned by all to be a monster of the air.

Speculations abound, like, how to breathe during a trip to Jericho Space, what range of spells or items can the heroes get to have advantage or at least parity in the coming battle, what the chances are that every monster has been manipulated and they won't have to fight at all, and just what kind of monster was the Lila, the Glittering Serpent and could knowing that help them prepare in the future?

Whatever the heroes want to do, they'll be ready for the next encounter when a majority want to gather around Gaffer for activating the next charge of the Time Stone.

Yrûl didn’t really know how to prepare for what was to come. She didn’t worry about it though. She trusted the others to help ensure she was safe – as safe as anyone could be under such circumstances So she took the time to explain everything to her little coterie of friends, so that they too were prepared..

The heroes get a good night's sleep. In the morning, there are several gnomes walking into the campsite, each with a Floating Disc behind them. On each disc is a carefully wrapped package with someones name on it. And the gnomes call out numbers...

"2224, for Hmerrin!"
"2225, for Hmerrin! (sheesh, the guy is busy)"
"2226, for Danko!"
"2227, for Desdichado!"


It, of course, is the Catacombs Delivery Service, providing magical enhancements for the discerning hero.

The heroes gather around Gaffer. Nira uses 7 charges from her Wand of Endure Elements on The Tide, and Gaffer ensures he can fly by turning into a Huge Air Elemental.

And then he activates his Stone.

The Tide find themselves standing on something solid while all about them, puffy white clouds move and billow in the breeze. (ooc: and that's a good thing, too, because only Gaffer is flying right now!) A quick inspection reveals all except Gaffer are standing on a platform (20’ diameter) of solid cloud with two solid cloud paths leading into the puffiness.

Gaffer notes that none of his spells went away, so it is safe to assume they are somewhere on the plane of the Wold.

Yrûl looked around. It was all very exciting and the clouds were being really quite helpful in offering some hiding places. Of course it was a rather long way down. That didn’t worry her overly. In fact, the farther the ground was away from her, the better. Should she fall, she had a contingency of sorts: not that she planned on falling.
”I should probably take the lead and find the path. It’s trying to be sneaky, but nothing is as sneaky as a shadow dancer.” She then studied the area to ascertain where it was safe to step.

”Oh, let’s go this way. This way looks good.” She enthused matching her actions to her words.

If there is sufficient room, he'll step in beside Danko.

"I've got a small flying carpet in my haversack," he replies. "If I go over, should have it out and be on board in 5 or 6 seconds. And I'm guessing I'll have the time."

You know, as long as I'm conscious and can move, he silently adds to himself.

Gaffer will fly forward and touch each of Yrul, Hmerrin and Des, casting Air Walk on each of them. He has spare castings and would rather not wait until one of them falls.

"A strong wind will push you through the air, so your other flying methods will still be useful." He warns them as he casts the spell.

Once that's done, he'll start looking at the clouded areas next to them.

"I wonder what would happen if a thunderstorm were to start?" Nira muses "Would the clouds be electrified? These don't seem to be ordinary clouds".

She tries to judge if the path moves as well with the clouds, or whether it is stationary. If stationary, then perhaps just blowing the clouds away will make things easier.

Two Minutes Pass

Yrûl looks around, noting all the lovely hiding places, and they are even providing good shadows from the light above! The shadowdancer takes the lead, but not sneaking so her friends can follow, spotting solid clouds fairly easily.

Desdichado follows Yrûl and tries not to look down. Ramirez also follows, ready with a Featherfall, and asks for boundaries of the solid clouds.

Danko casts mage armor, draws his rod of absorption, and sprouts his dragon wings, just in case….

Hmerrin sees the path is only 5’ wide, and squeezing by Danko will impair any fighting that has to be done, and may also unbalance the sorcerer and himself…

Gaffer bestows some flying ability to Yrûl, Hmerrin and Des, and notes the limitations of the spell in high winds. He perceives that there is no wind, in fact it is near unnaturally calm.

Nira thinks about possibilities, these are certainly not ordinary clouds! It is difficult without any location to spot while staying at the level of the path, but the elf-girl thinks the path and clouds are stationary.

She tries to judge if the path moves as well with the clouds, or whether it is stationary. If stationary, then perhaps just blowing the clouds away will make things easier. Her Arcane Sight shows strong transmutation magic all around the clouds at the level of the path. While looking about and thinking, Nira casts her daily spells that she had not cast before activating the Stone: probably because she knows
that if they move to another plane, they often lose the spells they cast while on the Wold plane.
(ooc: DM isn’t assuming any casting of daily spells if it is not listed in the PC Post.)

There are some clouds above the heroes, thinner than the thick puffiness about them, and Thermo, the sun above the Wold appears that it is early morning, providing many slanting shadows. Looking up, Nira doesn’t see any magical auras, and no one can see the Maharaja’s Seal or anything that can note where they are in the Wold.

After a couple of minutes of Yrûl taking the lead and the others noting the mapping of the paths, the heroes note some consistencies.
First, they can’t see through the clouds below to know how high up they are or even if there is a ‘ground’.
Second, other than the small 20’ platform they arrived on, the solid-cloud-paths are only 5’ wide.
Finally, the solid-cloud-paths are a veritable maze! Never more than 15’ in a straight line, there are many dead-ends, and while they have mapped out four paths that seem to move further away from the solid-cloud platform, there seems to be no physical indicator if any are going to do more than continue the circuitous maze.

”Oops.” Yrûl then explained in some detail about the nature of the path she was following, or attempting to. ”Sir Tolly wondered if there was a spell that could locate the Seal and maybe point the way. Oooh, or maybe I could ask a Gassy Servant to go find it? If I asked nicely, they might. You know, just so know where we are headed.”
The Shadow Dancer then merrily continued on her way, enjoying the early morning sun, fluffy clouds and not least the shadows that they accorded her. Peabo then reminded her to keep her mind on the job and that it wasn’t beyond the realm of possibility that there were even trapped clouds! Yrûl humoured him. Peabo was such a worrier. So she did her part in allaying his nerves.

She remains optimistic that the next encounter can also be resolved diplomatically. Maybe some friendly cloud giants?

Nira turns and looks behind the group. She's curious to see if this cloud maze is changing. It's not as if it will stop them from leaving, but it could make it more complicated to find where they're going.

Wandering until they found something was Hmerrin's plan, and that isn't working. Yrûl asks if summoning a friend to help would work: after all, she constantly gets help from all of her other friends.

Gaffer flies up about 50' feet and notes the clouds that the heroes are walking on are only about 20' above the level of the solid-cloud-path, and it looks to be in a general circle a mile or so radius. It is not an exact circle, the edges look fairly natural.

Nira takes note of the maze and looks to see if it is changing, and concludes no: the paths seem permanent.

Danko, having seen not only the Maharaja itself, but one previous Seal, makes an assumption that what is around here is near-identical to the one keeping in Lila, and casts a Locate Object spell ... and he senses a location! The Sorcerer leads the heroes back to the platform they started on and points down: the object Danko is sensing is underneath the platform!

The spell doesn't sense distance, only direction, but must be within about 1,000feet of Danko (the limit of his spell). Know Engineer DC20 Highlight to display spoiler: { (calculating the pythagorean hypoteneuse from where Danko cast the spell to where they are standing on the platform, the PC calculates it to be no more than 20' under the platform!)}

Ok, so if we found the seal, what is it going to unleash if it breaks? I think we will need to find a way to get to it, and examine it very thoroughly.

Nira's mention of storms has Ramirez thinking. He casts resist energy(electrical) from his wand and offers for anyone else who would like the same.

”Yes please. We’d like that.” Yrûl said on behalf of herself and her menagerie. She then looked for a way down. Was there a path going in that direction? Otherwise she’d be flapping her arms and hoping for the best. Of course a “gassy servant” could certainly help. She held off from summoning as she knew that the others would likely have better ideas – like being protected from nasty elements.
She completely ignored the fact that she’d been leading everyone the wrong way.

Nira closes her eyes and sighs. Resistance to Electricity. Of course! She'd literally mentioned storms but didn't do the next logical step.

She follows Ram's lead and uses her Wand of Resist Energy to cast Resist Energy (Electric 30) on the group. Between the two of them it shouldn't take long to cover the entire party.

"It's ok Yrul. Gaffer's air walk spell will let you fly underneath the cloud"

She waits for someone to take the lead.

She then tested the ‘air-walking’ ability to make sure it actually worked When it did, she smiled broadly. Then she set off in search of a seal guided by the general instructions. Naturally, this called for paramount shadow-stalker sneakiness.

Gaffer relays to the others "We are 20 feet above another solid cloud path, I'd guess the seal is there. and he'll fly down with the others.

Since they are focused on looking for the seal, he'll keep alert for other movements and potential dangers while he idly wonders what impact spells like Control Winds or Control Weather would have to the formation around them.

He also sends a "Oh yes please, good thinking." to Ram as well as it had slipped his mind also.

Hmerrin nods energetically at the mention of resistance spells.
The whole birds flinging lightning bolts fight is high on his list of things he doesn't want to do again.

He pieces together what the others are saying.
"Seal is below us. There's also solid, well, something, below us. And we have Air Walk spells. Going down for a look see seems like a plan."

He considers Ramirez' first question.
"The last seal was on an entrance that kept Lila inside. Have to assume this one is more or less the same, so there should also be a door or opening or something by the seal."

The fighter 'walks' off the side of the path and follows Yrul down.
He takes a quick look up to see if maybe the seal is on the underside of the path they were just on.

Enthusiastic assent, especially after the recent fights with electrical birds, the wands come out, and Ramirez, Nira, and Danko ensure all seven heroes have Resist Energy-electricity/30 and Protection vs Evil, before The Tide use various magical effects to walk off the platform-and-maze level and step down into the clouds.

(ooc: All Players please include current magical effects provided by others in the PC Posts, too. It's difficult for your DM to keep track of everything at this level. Besides, I'll need to know how many d20s to roll when/if anyone is affected by a Greater Dispel Magic. :-)

The clouds are thicker here: fluffy, cold, and damp; and the heroes descend about 20 feet before they break through into open air below. Ten feet above the heroes is a solid-seeming bank of cloud, though The Tide knows how easy it was just to walk through them. Below them, the nature experts estimate 500 feet down is the top of a snowy mountain! Yrûl takes a look at the Seal for traps and a means of bypassing its magic. She and her little friends are fairly certain there are no traps within or about the Seal, magical or otherwise. There is just the Seal and its magic, and it seems to be a binary solution: it is either ON or OFF.

Desdichado asks for a moment to ensure they have all of the magical protections they want before messing with the Seal. After all, the last monster had guardians… The paladin keeps a sharp eye out, but doesn’t see anything other than the heroes.

Hmerrin eyes the great mountain (far below) and the seal (close by) dubiously.

Ramirez hopes this time is like the last Seal, that the twisted Maharaja was getting his chuckles from manipulating not-otherwise-hostile creatures to destroy the Wold.

Gaffer wonders how this seal is actually trapping the creature, and where. He keeps his head on a swivel, but like Dez, doesn’t see anything other than the heroes.

Danko gets up one more spell, Haste.

Nira takes the opportunity as Yrûl examines the Seal to provide Resist Energy: Sonic to seven heroes.

The heroes continue to hover in mid-air (Danko, please make a Fly Check DC 15 to Hover each round). 20 feet above them are the thick clouds that obscure the solid platform-and-maze. 500 feet below them is the top of Mount Bone. Close by is the Maharaja’s leering face, immobile in silvery magic (i.e. the Seal). Currently, all of the heroes are within 20 feet of the Seal.

While he doesn't think much of this is natural, he tries to better consider what he is seeing around him.

Yrûl and Desdichado are for disabling the Seal, and Danko’s protective stance pretty much puts him on that choice, too. Ramirez, Gaffer, and Hmerrin are for waiting and looking around for a bit.

Gaffer has already been 50’ above the level of the solid-cloud-maze-walk. He recalls and can tell Hmerrin that he found nothing above the solid platform and maze obscured by the puffy white clouds that move and billow in the breeze. And that the puffy white clouds extend only 20' above the level of the solid-cloud-path, and looks like a general circle a mile or so radius, the edges natural looking.

And they do have a little time, though Yrûl can tell the other heroes that it can take close to a minute to disable a Seal, so the time to look about and decide and still give the Shadowdancer time to work are only a handful of seconds…

There really isn’t much of a choice to be made: let Yrûl turn it ‘off’ or let it activate naturally. Preferring to do something, in 12 seconds, Yrûl turns it ‘off’.

The magic of the Seal is turned off, and it turns into liquid mercury and falls to the distant peak of Mount Bone. So too does the platform and maze above the heroes! A rain of silvery droplets fall about them, luckily not causing any damage.

From where the Seal was, a small sphere of energy begins to expand.

(Ooc: DM misinterpreted the rules on Flying. Heroes using Air Walk spell (Yrul, Gaffer, Hmerrin, Desdichado, Ramirez) do not need a skill check to hover. All other heroes (Danko-Wings and Nira-Overland Flight) who are attempting to hover must make a skill check Fly DC15 each round. Failure = they have to move at least ½ flying speed. Failure by 5+ = fall 600’ft [note mountain top is only 500’ down].

Yrûl, confident in her evasiveness, studies the energy ball, but the only thing the Shadowdancer can observe is it is a ball, it is made of some force, and it is expanding. (ooc: the clouds above the heroes are providing plenty of shadows for the surface drow.)

Desdichado air walks backwards to get away from the energy sphere. It doesn’t look like the

Gaffer watches the silvery liquid drops fall to the mountain with a concerned look on his face, before snapping up to look at the glowing energy. He drifts away from the glow and group.

Nira also backs away from the sphere, keeping her eyes on the sphere and the clouds.

Ramirez thinks there might be a reason why the seal mercury-liquid is dropping onto that mountain, and also watches from below as he backs up. Considering his knowledge of all things arcana, the bard recognizes the spell effect that is in place: it is an Imprisonment spell! He's also quite aware that the spell is supposed to capture a creature beneath the earth: it appears the Maharaja twisted the spell like he twisted everything he touched...

Danko doesn’t like this, and he flies over up towards Gaffer. (ooc: With 60’ of speed, he is able to be quite near at AL,17)

The sphere of energy expands quite rapidly to colossal size, pushing Yrûl in front of it (ooc: Yrûl is now at Z,25). And then it flickers and dissipates. But the space where the energy sphere was is still occupied…

The creature is Colossal. Three pairs of wings beat rhythmically yet in different directions and speeds. Birdlike in body with the razor-sharp beak of a raptor, it is nevertheless covered in shield-sized scales that look both incredibly hard and knife-edged. The wingbeats are directed at the three groups of heroes, and so great that they are pushed by strong winds (ooc: -2 ranged attacks, -2 fly checks). Those using Air Walk (Hmerrin, Yrûl, Ramirez, and Desdichado) are pushed 25’ back!

It hovers (Fly check 48), its head cocked to one side, and considers the seven heroes.

Yrûl Moved upwards. Thee seemed to here little point in everyone being on the same plane for ‘birdy-dragon’ to attack. Moreover, moving higher put her closer to the clouds above and the security of the shade that they provided. The wind wasn’t overly troubling. She still had a full day’s capacity to shadow step and could get behind the creature quite easily. What she’d actually do once there was a different matter entirely. For now she would hide. She didn’t want the beaky bird spotting where she was or wasn’t.

Nira recalls another tidbit from history, that Behemoths are created by gods to punish mortals, and there was a Southern Continent elfin kingdom called Dre Moria that was laid waste by an immortal creature of wind and storm. Behemoths never age and so can be considered immortal, so this may be the same one!

Hovering, the Behemoth says. ”Hrrrorr!” and its eyes narrow.

Hrrrooor? Nope, that didn’t ring any bells either.. Yrûl decided to slowly make her way over he creature. The wind buffetting was directed ahead. She’d risen and then did what she did best: hidden. So now it was time for some delightful shadowy sneakiness.

"Friends." The bard gets back a one-word reply. "HRRAAAWWWKK!", and quickly translates it to the other heroes: Destroy.

With the single thunderous squawk, the Behemoth attacks!

Swiftly, Desdichado and Ramirez are struck by a 200’ long thunderbolt!
(Desdichado and Ramirez take 48 electrical and 54 sonic damage and is deafened: Reflex DC34 for half and not deafened. [apply save before applying Resist Energy] If hero takes 1+ damage, and fails save, is still deafened.)

At the same time (ooc: free action) the triple sets of wings whip up into a windstorm, buffeting in three directions! Yrûl, in moving upwards and being sneaky, is not affected, but all other heroes get hit by winds at 60mph! (See Windstorm effects below) Yrûl notes the wind effect is directional and about 30’ wide…

Well, that was very rude! Thought Yrûl. She slunk her way further over the creature. To attack so soon seemed unwise. She wanted others in position in order to try to ensure that any attack she made inflicted the greatest hurt possible. Not that she seriously expected to hurt the thing much. She just wasn’t that strong. Yet Snickit and Dabz were brimful of confidence. They were already asking to get stuck in.

‘An eye!’ Suggested Dabz. Go for an eye. That won’t be armoured like the rest of it.
‘Back of the neck!’ Countered Snickit. That means it’s less likely to spot us and we’ll get a brilliant attack off.

Yrûl listened and informed them that they’d get their chance soon – very soon. She’d have to act, if only as a diversion so that the others could close to telling effect. After it wasn’t as if she was going to be killing anything.

"Brilliant ideas? Not yet" Nira grimaces as one of the scales slices her arm. "I'm struggling for any ideas"

Her best one so far is to try and cover it with a Forbidden Rain spell, but up in the air, the creature would just drop outside of the rain and be fine again. Best she'd be able to do is daze it for a few seconds, and they need more than that. Suffocate it maybe? This is a toughy.

Nira takes a moment to quickly cast a Spectral Hand spell in anticipation the party are going to need some healing. For now, she tries to weaken the behemoth to her spells.

Yrûl slinks over to the rude creature, considering where to attack.
(ooc: without a Player provided grid, DM interpreted a 60 foot move to AA,25 above the Behemoth)

Desdichado gets a flash and bang and deaf and bleeding. A binding of wounds stops the bleeding, and the paladin finds he can still ‘hear’ through the telepathic bond!

Gaffer casts Control Winds and counters the Behemoths ability to focus winds by reducing the wind strength to a calm sky in a 1600’ diameter radius! (ooc: Awesome use of the spell!

Ramirez, in a suddenly becalmed sky, is able to loose an arrow which strikes true, but is hardly a pin prick. It has damage reduction!

Hmerrin, expecting the attack, moves in for one of his own. He springs forward and delivers a hit with his battle axe.

Nira grimaces as she struggles for any ideas. She quickly casts Spectral Hand, and then Eye of Newt and Toe of Frog. The spell penetrates the mythical monster’s spell resistance and holds! Nira finds herself in the possession of a drop of the creature’s blood.

Danko's stoneskin helps to reduce the damage but that still hurt! He transforms into a huge bronze dragon! There appears no affect on the Behemoth on the dragon’s Frightful Presense (ooc: must be less HP than Danko.)

In front of Hmerrin’s eyes, the wound on the creature writhes and closes!

The Behemoth tries to whip up even stronger winds, but is countered by Gaffer’s controlled weather! It let’s out an angry, thunderous squawk!

It turns it’s attention to Hmerrin, intent to destroy the insect that attacked it. The beak stabs down, two talons rake, and the blonde fighter is buffeted by a set of wings. They all land, and Hmerrin is now bleeding even worse! (Hmerrin takes 33, 23, 29, 47 = 132 damage [minus any DR or other defense] + 10 Bleeding damage)

Danko, Nira, and Ramirez continue to bleed 1 bleed damage

With Hmerrin committed to the battle and taking some terrible blows Yrûl felt compelled to act. She doubted that she’d achieve much, except get hit, but that wasn’t going to stop her trying. She tapped her heels together and then slid into the shadows and out, right behind the bad tempered bird’s head.

(Not sure how far above she was, but will deduct 50’. Please advise if any different. Hero Point expended to attack immediately. Heel tap invokes Haste.)

It was Dabz turn to attack. She just hoped that he could strike a telling part of the strange creature.

Dabz struck true! (Nat 20. Crit ‘confirmed by a Nat 1. That’s enough to hit, but 1’s miss.)

Yrûl, invokes her magical boots and is affected by a Haste effect. Since she is already near the creature’s head, she doesn’t need to move, and is able to give a full attack (ooc: please resolve in next post). Dabz and Snicket both strike, though without a critical hit (ooc: critical hits are another attack roll, and natural 1s always miss for attacks and saves). The Behemoth shrugs off electrical damage, most of the blows, and isn’t Bleeding!

Hmerrin gets the Behemoth’s attention, and notes the fast healing. He opens up with all he has! It is an incredible display of what the full fury of the fighter is capable of, and he does a great deal of damage, but incredibly, the Behemoth isn’t stunned or even staggered… it is unstoppable and seemingly immune to almost any condition!

Desdichado moves forward and up to Yrûl. (ooc: placed at Z,26, 30’ high on the plane)

Ramirez calls for a plan and lets loose a full volley of arrows while singing. Three strike, and the bard can see the Behemoth isn’t evil, either.

Danko the Dragon sees Gaffer employ fire, so he casts Polar Ray! The Sorcerer manages to penetrate the Behemoth’s spell resistance (ooc: DM rolled), and... it works! The creature is NOT immune to cold! But it is immune to ability damage…

The Tempest Behemoth regenerates, but not enough to heal the terrible wounds inflicted by The Tide. It again tries to bring a storm to the skies, and again Gaffer’s spell keeps the sky calm.

It understands enough to know that going claw-to-axe with Hmerrin is a losing battle, and that its ability to create windstorms ended after the air elemental cast a spell…

Gaffer grunts and drifts back a step in the air as each of the scales crash into him, thankful for his shifted form preventing some of the impact and for his current lack of blood.

Nira doesn't know any cold spells, well, except for Ray of Frost but that's just not going to cut it.

She casts a pair of Vampiric Touch spells to both hurt the behemoth but give her a little bit more protection.

"I don't think it can take much more" she alerts the party. Of course then there's the issue of how to keep it down. "If we can keep it down for a few seconds I can try imprisoning it again"

Yrûl (last round) contributed to the ever-increasing damage to the Behemoth. She also connects with her opportunity, but is no longer sneaking on the monster. Congratulating her weapons, she slips into the clouds and sneaks to get the angry bird. Luckily, she is not spotted (ooc: DM rolled for stealth)

Hmerrin swings and misses, pursues and misses, but at least his expertise in combat enables him to avoid a chance at a return attack.

Desdichado manages to get through the hard scales with his opportunity, and pursues the Behemoth. Unlike sneaky Yrûl or springy Hmerrin, the paladin has to suffer a strike from Temper to get within range.

Gaffer is thankful his current shifted prevented some damage and that he can’t bleed! He defensively casts Heal and keeps near the creature.

Nira decides a Ray of Frost cantrip is just not going to cut it! She tries a Vampiric Touch spell, and finds out the Behemoth is immune to Necromancy! Seeing the first one was immune, she doesn’t throw good spells after bad. (ooc: only need to use 1 Vampiric Touch)

Ramirez, the plan being ‘use cold and weapons’, continues his arrow barrage and Bardsong, thankful that he can actually fire arrows: without Gaffer’s spell, it would be impossible for the Bard to hit anything! More damage on the Behemoth.

Danko gives a gape-mouth dragon grin: Polar Ray it is! His spell barely overcomes the monster’s spell resistance, but it does penetrate, and does hurt it bad. Real bad.

Gaffer realises the problem in trying to kill an immortal creature and asks the others "Is the magic of the seal gone? Or could we reseal it with the same magic" Though Nira mentions the imprisonment spell and that seems like a good option.

He's in no rush to start flying after the creature, it seems unlikely they will be able to keep up, but with Danko offering a teleport, he'll move over and hold hands.

Nira predicts the monster’s regeneration is going to keep coming. She flies down 40’ more (ooc: adjusting from the location of the Behemoth, Nira is +500’) Her Spectral Hand easily has the range to deliver an Imprisonment spell. Nira easily bypasses the creature’s Spell Resistance, but it’s Will is strong enough to turn the spell! But wait, Nira’s Eye of Newt and Toe of Frog spell gives her an extra power, and the Behemoth is once again Imprisoned away from the Wold!

The scene in the air above Mount Bone blurs in front of the heroes, and suddenly... The Tide is standing at the refugee camp in the ruined foyer of Tide House. The refugees are still here.

One older woman looks closely at the Tide. ”They ain’t wet this time”, she pronounces her verdict.

”Not wet” Yrûl confirmed, but she really wasn’t sure why they’d succeeded. Perhaps one of her little friends could explain. Sir Tolly seemed clever.

’So the birdie was stuck in a prison. We let him out – well, I did I suppose – but then we put him back – in another prison. And we never even got chance to explain. No wonder it’s such an angry birdie. Still….how does putting the birdie in a cage stop it from getting out again? I mean, it got out before and made a mess, so why won’t it again?’ Sir Tolly could only opine that the two prisons were quite different in nature. Snickit and Daz were less helpful, postulating that the bird’s great fear of their ‘stabbiness’ would deter it from ever coming back.

That is true Ramirez says to the old woman. And we all came back alive, so there is that. Hmerrin is right the next one is probably the biggest unknown.

Ramirez uses prestidigitation to clean up everyone who is interested. Then he eats a few pieces of fruit, smoked meat and some bread before going to get some rest.

The pressure of these battles back to back is wearing but he takes in the surroundings to see how the devestation has changed, before he goes looking for food.

The heroes congratulate each other; Gaffer's Control Winds enabling Yrûl, Danko, and Hmerrin to inflict more than 400 points of damage in mere seconds, and Nira's Imprisonment finishing off the danger.

Speculation draws that the Imprisonment of the Tempest Behemoth by the Tide is different than the Maharaja's Imprisonment because Nira's spell doesn't have a trigger: the immediate danger to Dirt City and the rest of the Wold is gone.

Ramirez cleans everyone up with several Prestidigitation spells, and healing, rest, and recover is the order of the day. The refugees help out by setting up a nice pan-fry of fresh caught fish, and someone did a little more cleaning by finding the bristle part of a broken broom and had swept out the entrance to the Catacombs. Since the first two 'immortal' monsters matched the first line of Gimp's Rhyme, speculation begins on what in Serenbeth's Dreams does 'Star'lived' mean?

”Oh yes, it would be very rude of us not to thank the nice people that let us fly and the nice lady for imprisoning the birdie, wouldn’t it ? - Snickit? Dabz?” Yrûl pointedly looked at each weapon in turn before raising her head to smile prettily.

”They said ‘Thank you very much, you were all wonderful.’ I shan’t repeat the over-enthusiastic expletives. Really, there’s no need for that. Now, as to this Star Liv’d thingy….aren’t stars sort of far away? You know, like nowhere near he sun and stuff like that? So I thought that maybe it’s so far away it’s like a void or something and cold.” She shrugged. ”Then again, maybe stars are fiery; you know like a candle ….but bigger. Yrûl decided it was best to stop talking before she tied herself in knots with her non-existent logic. At least the whole ‘prison’ thing had been explained.

She then turned her attention to eating and resting – after thanking “Rammy” for making her clean and refreshed once more. She admired the brightness of her colourful ribbons. Yrûl delighted in being the most colourful shadow dancer ever. After eating she pondered what she might need for the next foray into the unknown. She had no defences against the elements; so was entirely reliant on the potent magic of others. A lack of air though, wasn’t an issue. If she didn’t want to, she didn’t have to breathe at all.

As for what to expect of Star'lived, he thinks their best clues will come from the destruction of the city, and he does another fly over as a hawk to understand what energies and influences remain.

He will also mention to the others, "If we can wait two days, I can recast my Spellstaff, but I can do without if not."

The fighter considers Danko's theory.

He nods at Gaffer's suggestion. If the druid can understand the damage type, that'd sure be helpful.

Bright light? Oh, that didn’t sound good at all. She hoped that. Yet try as she might, she didn’t see how light alone could cause such massive destruction. Acquiring more information did seem like an excellent idea. They had seen already that being adequately prepared for the battle was pivotal to success.

She smiled somewhat bashfully at the praise. She still felt decidedly outclassed by the skills, wisdom and power of the others, but she did at least have a lot of little friends to offset that shortfall in ability – as she perceived it.

Praise and thanks are given and taken with enthusiasm!

Gaffer does a Dirt City fly-over to assess any change in the damage. As before, the city is still completely destroyed, but the nature of destruction has changed. As with Lila the Glittering Serpent and the absence of flooding, this time there is no evidence of acid rain and tornadoes in Smuggler City and the Burn, but they are added to the swath of destruction, just as the harbor area was.
Like a child running through leaves, the wanton destruction of 3/5ths of Dirt City from Keyhole and Smuggler City to the Prince’s Castle and harbor area, are all destroyed and collapsed into what used to be the City Below.

Later in the evening, plans start evolving. Star'lived, it is speculated, is different from fire, so maybe no air? Maybe surrounded by Light? Maybe somewhere in Jericho Space? Desdichado hopes not Kerracles, but hasn't yet elaborated on why that could be bad...

Ramirez uses his extensive bardic knowledge to think about stars and things that live in them. He understands from the natural order that stars are in Jericho Space, and locations in JS are just an obscure type of geography. There was a book attributed to a halfling that claimed to have traveled Jericho Space by flying up from the Wold in a giant balloon! OK, OK, getting beyond that, the book and a Woldian League of Adventurers report about a group called the 'Children of Chaos' having fought a Star Dragon are really the only definitive treatises on Jericho Space, and Ramirez recaps both for the heroes.

According to those sources, the Wold is flattened green and blue disc that rotates slowly around the sun, Thermo, and there are some spherical bodies in-between Thermo and Wold that also circle the sun, and Kerracles is one of them. Going further out, there are various bodies in different shapes, spheres, cubes, and areas of many little rocks like spread out piles of rubble. Almost all of these bodies circle Thermo at different distances.

Only the book talks of further out, the stars appearing like tiny lights and moving but always in concert with each other. The Halfling author described it like being on the inside of a ball looking out.

Neither source said breathing was a problem, but there were strange inhabitants all over. It is said that both Inevitables (sentient constructs) and the Teruci (mythical magic builders) are from somewhere in Jericho Space.

"If we are to encounter one of the Destroyers in Jericho Space, there's no telling what it might be like. It would certainly be unwoldly."

Desdichado thinks about the last time they encountered Teucri construction - the time bubble and maze. If it's anything like that again, there's definitely no telling what it's going to be like.

Yrûl contemplated the ‘being ready for anything’ situation. The idea of taking a potion or ten seemed to present one solution, but which potions and wasn’t there some sort of issue with mixing them up- inside you? The last thing she needed was a poorly stomach, or worse – grow flippers. Deactivating wards was difficult with flippers. So she settled for practicing her ‘dance steps’. It was always good to slide between the shadows, gyrate in the gloom and dance in the darkness. Especially as she didn’t lack for partners. Snickit and Dabz were always eager to ‘dance’.
