After finding a third marginal notation in a language she does not know, Yofiel goes to a clean page in her bound journal, returns to the first instance, copies what is written in the known language, then looks carefully over the scribbled foreign note, and replicates it as well as she might. On to the second note, and third, each time carefully transcribing. Most of the time she is fast-reading, as her father taught her, sweeping her hand over the text without touching the page as a guide for her eyes to follow, catching two to five lines at a time - usually about three or a nudge more. For each additional note, she pauses as described.Once she wades through that tome, she shows what she transcribed to Siolo and Falkwyn. "Look at this. Let me know if you come across anything in this writing style. Does anyone recognize it?" Besides her journal, she shows two samples from the book. "Siolo - you might like these, but let's save that for later. We have much to cover. Too bad Marest is not with us. She understands the relationships between alchemy and plants fairly well."
"Patterns, Yofi, patterns. Catch the tempos, the rhythms, the structure of the composition." Her father's voice is in her head. Yet she quietly says the words aloud. "Learn the author's style. Capture the writer's voice as reflected in the written word. When time is short, then fast-read. When it is shorter, then sweep-read." She accelerates, scanning the upper half or third of a full page in one sweep, then the middle third or second half.
The elf reads the opening two to five pages less rapidly. That is polite. It is a time to allow the writer to introduce himself, or herself. What forecast for the bulk of the book will those first few pages provide her?
