Beech (JohnC) AC 20(24)/15/15,HP 103/103 See Invis/Darkvision Character
Thursday September 12th, 2024 2:45:59 PM

Beech casts Fly on Mak, "Do me a favor, next Catacombs trip, remind me to buy a Rod."
As soon as Beech spots people, on the ship Panzer said was going to be his target, start responding to his assault, Beech shoots an arrow at the deck of the ship, the arrow will be carrying a Black Tentacles spells, so all he needs to do is hit the ship, and spell will go off....
As he pulls back the arrow to release, "Go now, I'll be casting something on each ship to keep them occupied."
He shoots and them moves forward, after doing Arcane Archer stuff.

So at this point - I see that Falco, Panzer, and Tsak are all underwater, and Beech, Ayotnom, and Mak are flying ... got it

OOC: No I don't need damage rolls David, Panzer's weapons will cut through these boats like a hot knife through butter =)

OOC: I haven't heard anything back yet, so, I'm gonna go ahead and blame my old age and blonde hair ... unless Jerry reads this, and then I'm blaming everything on Cayzle

IC: The Petals under the water find that these boats are in rough shape. While "technically" sea worthy, the pirates probably spend more time bailing water than actually sailing. Panzer finds that the wood disintegrates when he applies his blades to them ... Tsak and Falco follow him, and join in on the destruction of the ships ...

In the air, Mak prepares to unleash a volley of arrows should someone look their way.

Beech begins silently launching arrows at the ships, each arrow erupts into a black tentacle, similar in size and shape to that of an octopus ...

None of the pirates seem to notice, including the ones snoring in the ships that the party is destroying

After several minutes of waiting, none of the pirates have noticed the party, that their boats are sinking, or that their friends have been wrapped up in black tentacles ...

Who has noticed are the mass of bodies in what the party can see if a hastily constructed building ... looks like the pirates have used reclaimed ship wood and pieces to build it, and it's held together by copious amounts of rope ... Ayotnom spots a hand waving a piece of shirt from the far side of the "cage"

There's no way he's climbing up into a sinking boat covered in angry tentacles. He decides to swim for the 'island' where the building is. Fixing his gaze on the light from the pirates bonfire he heads toward it, still underwater.

Panzer gleefully is putting holes in to crappy ships, and comes to the last one ... this one is different than the others, its in much better shape, although someone has painted and scuffed it up to look like the others.

Tsak gets his bearings and heads for the "cage" from the water, Ayotnom is heading to the cage from the air.

Falco slips onto the last boat before Panzer ruins it, and Beech turns it into a mass of tentacles. This is sound, no leaks, much better craftsmanship. Someone has gone to the trouble of making it match the others, but they haven't done that great of a job

Beech holds off on firing any more tentacle arrows, while Mak keeps watch with an arrow on his bowstring

The "people" are still dancing and, well, singing, not as good as a bard, but better than Mak when he's drunk ... One of them, and those looking at them, is faking his motions ... to the other people, he's dancing his ass off, to y'all, this dude's got two left feet, ogre feet

it's this dude, that feels something is off, turns and yells out, "What the hell is that?!" He's pointing at Beech, who seems to be floating in the sky.

Of the remaining dancers, four stop dancing and look up into the sky ... three laugh their asses off, and yell at the "sober" guy, [d]"Which barrel did you drink from mate, come on, leave the floating centaur alone..."[/b] another one yells out, "Yah, at least it ain't no pink badger, no wait, ummm, was'is'it, elepant...

The last guy, looks up sees Beech, realizes that the ships are sinking ... and drops to his knees with his hands on his head ... anyone down wind of him will catch the lovely aroma of fresh pee

Ayotnom and Tsak get to the cage about the same time. This "building" is a conglomeration of ship parts and driftwood heald together by sailcloth and rope. They both can hear murmuring coming from within the building

Ayotnom and Tsak easily figure out that cutting and removing on section of rope will cause the entire back wall to fall open. As they are this close, they see at least two dozen people crammed into this 'cage', and they all look like the need several good meals, and definitely several hot baths.

Panzer tells the group of pirates, that if they surrender he won't have to kill them. Falco tosses in his two coppers by adding that a good talk might be nice.

Beech, unhappy with his 'description,' keeps watch on the party goes, as does Mak

As the dancers stop, and VERY SLOWLY begin catching on to what's actually happening, Falco's question seems to make it into several of their brains, "Rickety, no, those beauties are well broken in. The fellow that hired us said so ... hey why do our boats look funny ... "

The guy on the ground already adds, "I knew they were bad, but they were cheap, and once we started capturing the fisher-folk, they made good bailers."

Yeah mate, good point. Tsak looks over the pirates boats, did Panzer leave any intact?
Two dozen is too many for the portable boat, it'll have to be several trips to the Rose to get them all to safety.

Maybe we leave 'em where they are in relative safety and take care of their captors first. We don't want panicked people running everywhere.

Tsak moves around to place himself between the cage and any pirates and catches what the guy on the ground says. They're slaves! Tsak is NOT cool with people being used as slaves.
His face immidiately becomes an angry mask (initimidation) and, as he doesn't trust himself to talk, he just glares at the pirates.

It's Falco's question that make the very first guy who dropped to his knees answer, "Didn't see a face, only a mask, one of those the jesters wear, all black with white diamonds on it. I think they were female they had a soft voice. Paid us, he looks at the others, then continues, they paid us one thousand gold up front, and provided us with all the boats except the nice one. That one came from one of the first merchant ships we caught. Falco tries to pin down who the "leader is," which happens to be the first guy to drop to his knees, "We've never been there. We were paid to stay over here and make a big ruckus to keep everyone's attention here. If there is anybody on that isle, we've no clue."

Shifting his gaze from Falco to Ayotnom he answers, "She or he is taller than me, bit skinnier, she did have a scent, was weird, a mix of dry scales and lilies. As the hostages move out of the cage, and into the sunlight and fresh air, their mood seems to brighten. Though they are hungry and thirsty, only a few need healing and just minor stuff at that.

Panzer coordinates some actions, asking Beech about his "Check-in time" with the Duke, and then discusses the pirates being placed in the cage they made.

Tsak and Panzer can find enough rope to tie all the pirates hands to their waists.

Before they can be headed into the cage, Falco approaches the group and asks which two "did the killing." almost as if it was choreographed, all the pirates move back leaving two befuddled humans looking around, not understanding what is going on ...

Beech mentions that he doutbs the owners of the tavern in Imod City weren't part of this scheme

Mak is still watching everything happening, while Ayotnom runs the description of the woman(?) who set this pirate scheme up

Following all that has happened, Ayotnom takes some time and wrack’s his brain around, high quality gold, where lilies might grow, and where might a liazard-kin population live …

The quality of gold discussed would either be of dwarven make, or come from an old treasure hoard; there are patches of lilies growing in small areas of the Isle’s, however, there is also a highy priced and sought after perfume made from lilies when they first bloom, again, that would come from somewhere outside of the Isle’s; as to lizard folk or kin, there aren’t any living on any of the Isel’s he has ever heard of

Panzer finishes tying up the pirates, then takes a moment to caution Falco about keeping his cool, let the “local justice system” take care of them. Panzer then heads out to the Rose to discuss bringing the ex-prisoners on board for medical and transportation home

Falco, the two drunken humans realize something isn’t right from all their friends stepping away from them. Then they see a birdman headed their way and laugh, ”We must be drunk, that’s a bird with legs.” The other human looks Falco up and down and smacks his friend, ”that ain’t no bird, that’s and owl with legs you moron.” When Falco closes in on them and tells them they will confess to the murders they committed, they both laugh … when Falco summons a tower of light and fire, utterly destroying all the pirates gear, they both sober up, pee themselves, and pass out

Mak is chillin, just watching his friends work their magic, he probably mutters something under his breath about a lost opportunity to make popcorn, but c'est la vie

Beech makes contact with the Advisor they met. ”The pirates were hired, well that’s a new one. We’ll get a ship out there to pick them up in the next few days, and the survivors, unless you want to transport them home. If not, then leave them enough food and water for a few days. Now, this figure you described, female, odd voice, heavy gold – someone has been looking to hire mercenaries in the area, but haven’t had any success. There is a group of heavily armed and armored men looking, as well as a slight female or feminine form who travels with two bodyguards. No one can truly give descriptions of any of these people, nor can we find them. I’ve talked to the Duke, but he has no further insight into what these people are looking for, or who they are, but we will keep trying to catch and talk to them.”

Tsak watches over Falco, its been a minute since he saw his fellow Petal so worked up. Summoning the fire is a nice touch, and it seems to sate his friends need to do something. Tsak understands very well, his own fingers are tingling with a desire to take a club and beat the two senseless, or worse.

The news, via Beech, from the Duke's man is interesting.

Rumblings and gossip but nothing concrete. In that case we may as well load up the captives on the Rose and take them to a town ourselves. We're not needed in a hurry anywhere. Panzer, tell the crew to send over our portable boat, they'll know what that means. We can use it to ferry the hostages to the Rose. The pirates can stay here and await their fate.

Tsak then sets about making sure that none of the pirates boats are at all salvageable, it gives him something to hit.

So after listening to the Advisor's comments, and that of the "pirate leader," the group decides to take the ex-captives home, as well, drop off the good-shape boat to replace they one they lost. From the fishing village, almost all of the captives can get home, and the ones that can't can catch a ride the next time a trading vessel comes through, which is in a few weeks. After a discussion about the prisoners, has ended up with them all tied up and in a cargo hold on the Rose.

Making landfall, The Duke's Advisor meets the Rose with a detachment of guards. The pirates are taken under guard until they can face trial. The party knows that the fate of most pirates is either the gallows or made into deck slaves, living the rest of their lives out working the dirtiest and most dangerous jobs a sailor can do.

The Advisor invites the party to a higher end drinking and eating establishment. "Gentlemen, eat and drink what you wish, this is my reward. Also, you can stay here for up to a week if you need. The bathing chamber is very nice, and any clothes or equipment you need mended or fixed can be handled. Now, tell me again about this person who hired this group of pirates?"

Sorry about yesterday, my mom has been in the hospital since Monday night, and no one seems to be returning my phone calls on how she is, grrrrrrr

The discussion about this "female'ish" person seems to illicit more questions than answers. One item the Advisor mentions however, does catch the party's attention. "We've gotten reports from Liontaur Isle that something is afoot. If these pirates were hired to cause mischief on the other side of Minotaur Isle, then it could be possible that this person is headed there for whatever reason. I will inform the Duke about this information. Now please go enjoy yourselves. Oh, if any of you need help cleaning or washing, there are both men and women who will help, and they are all trained in massage, which I may need to go get before I retire."

The meal is somewhat special tonight, in your honor, roasted pheasant, spit roasted pork loin, several different fish dishes, several different vegetable dishes, both roasted and one in a cream sauce (similar to indian vegetable korma). There are several variety of breads, and honey, and freshly churned butter. Hot mulled wine, and apple cider (both alcohol and non), and of course plenty of beer...

Several conversations occur between the Petals and Tsak and Mak seem to be in a staring contest, one where the rest of y'all consider one or both of them is up to some kind of mischief. Seeing this Panzer finds a spot away from both of them and slowly digs into a mountain of food. The discussion of Beech possibly zapping himself to Imod City and a tavern to ask a Family of Dragon's about this person bounces back and forth, with no apparent yes or no answer given.

A bard is given a corner area, where he plays his lute, singing dwarven drinking songs, elvish love songs, and of course pirate shanties ... anyone wishing to join him is encouraged by the crowd

We have dealt with a dragon before, a rainbow one. And from memory he had a sister that we allowed to leave. I wonder if she's had a change of heart. Or maybe another of that family has taken up the mantle. Does anyone know what Lillies represent? Is that scent just a perfume or could it have other connotations?
Tsak gives Mak a wink and ends their stare-down. It's more fun drinking with the fighter than trying to out-wit him. When the meal comes he heartily digs in. and of course partakes of a few ales too.

(OOC: Does the dragon cave have water access? If not could we use spells to alter the landscape so that it could? I'm thinking we make a cave cove base, I'd say a pirate's cove but we aren't pirates but still essentially a ship cove that The Rose could dock at and sail out of)

Ayotnom says, "Well apparently with respect to the smell of lillies there is a highly sought after expensive perfume made from lillies when they first bloom but that is made and sold outside of the Taur Islands. I guess if we could track down where outside the Isles said perfume is made we could go to said perfume store and ask the staff if anyone matching our mysterious female's description purchased from them or paid in high quality gold but I mean if they are that exclusive a store they'd probably be loathe to dish on their clientelle so we'd probably need some kind of help from the local authorities."

Ayotnom then says, "Wait a tick we are at a fancy hotel right? Get me the concierge. I'd like to speak to him or her about this Lilly perfume and if this hotel stocks any or if there is any importer on this island that the concerige knows about if not, perhaps the concierge of this fancy hotel at least knows the origin of the lilly perfume so that we can perhaps have Beech zap himself and a few of us to wherever the Lilly perfume originated from and play Law and Order with the local constabulary and owners of the perfume store. It could be a wild goose chase or if she was wearing this pefume it could be a break in the case."

As it happened, Mak wasn't in a staring contest, he was just reflecting on the past in Tsaks general direction. When the ranger blinked Mak snapped out of it. "Right, where were we? Yes, I think the crew has earned some shore leave. I guess I'll be taking over for Kiwina for now." he said at last as he placed two hands on the table and stood.

Mak wandered over to the Rose and met briefly with Ramsey. While he was there he explained Kiwina's absence and that for now he'd be taking over Kiwina's duties until he returned. His first order of business was to declare a windfall for the Rose with a 1,000gp bonus to be divided among the crew. Additionally Ramsey would get 500gp and another 500 to restock to the ship. It was also time for a little shore leave and Mak told Ramsey he'd rely on him to determine the schedule.

Can we go to the catacombs and sell the stuff we have and buy gear?

Long hot baths and grooming afterwards?...OM yes please. It would be amazing to get the undead dirt, and the forests, and the knots and burrs and other nastiness out of his fur.

DM Mark - What Now?
Monday September 30th, 2024 11:20:32 PM

Ayotnom thinks back to the small island with a cave that was the lair of a Rainbow Dragon. The cave was about an hour of bushwhacking from the shore, but once a path is cleared it would take less time. It's maybe a mile or two. There was a tunnel leading in and the cavern was about 100ft X 100ft with a 40ft high ceiling. Being an old, volcanic island, the cavern lies well above the ocean.

Ayotnom thinks that perhaps he can track down the perfume that was mentioned. He goes to the inn's proprietor and asks to speak to someone who knows about perfumes. He's told the hotel doesn't carry any perfumes, but there is a perfumer in town - a minotaur names Tesug.

Ayotnom will eventually make his way to this Tesug, but finds the man is basically a local hedge wizard who specializes in herbs and scents. He has a number of lovely floral scents for you to smell. When you mention lilies he has one that smells like lilies. He says it's not been that popular but is reluctant to give out the names of his clients. Ayotnom finds the scent odd, bordering on unpleasant.

Sense Motive DC 18: Highlight to display spoiler: {You conclude this person produces decent scents, but nothing that would be considered fancy or expensive. Based on what he smelled, Ayotnom doesn't really think anyone would confuse this man's lily scent with a desirable perfume.}

Knowledge Nobility DC 18: Highlight to display spoiler: {Typically, perfumes tend to be made for the ruling classes, and in societies that put a high value on such things. You do not think the scents you'd find in a minotaur society would be the same as those found in other cities or societies.}

Ayotnom thinks trying to chase down a perfume, particularly one he's never smelled, would indeed be a wild goose chase.

Beech offers to teleport folks where they need to go.

Mak sees to shore leave for the crew. Ramsey thanks Mak for his kind generosity, but worries about unbalancing things with the crew. He tells Mak that the kind of funds he is offering may encourage them to simply leave the ship for a year. He offers to take 100 GP and see to the crew's leave, and another 100 to disperse among them. He only needs a couple hundred to get the ship in top shape. But he will take the 500 offered to him. In total that's about 900 GP.

Panzer makes good use of the amenities at the inn. While they don't offer massages, they direct Panzer to a place that does. The minotaurs there are a mix of men and women. They are a bit apprehensive about the little badger man. They're clearly used to working on much larger muscles and they're afraid they'll hurt Panzer. Of course, Panzer laughs telling them he's made of much tougher stuff than most. One female minotaur give him a massage. She is overly careful at first, but soon puts some muscle into it. At one point, Panzer begins to think this might've been a bad idea, but by the time she's done he's sore in a way he knows will feel quite good later. The cost is modest for the little warrior.

Eventually, the week of high living comes to an end.

Having a home base is a requirement of adventuring groupd in the Wold. That's why this particular game is called the Taur Isles Game. Where do you consider your home base to be? If it's here on Monotaur Island, that's fine. Or Centaur Isle, or Liontaur Isle, or even Bridge Isle. The dragon cave is fine, but as I mentioned, it will take some work to rebuild the small fishing village that was once there and quite a lot of work to turn that cave into something comfortable. It still smells of dragon. And your ship would need to be moored out at sea at this small island, which can have some complications from time to time.

Ayotnom gets the sense from the perfume hedge wizard that he isn't exactly the caliber of perfume merchant that would produce a highly sought after perfume and he thanks the taur for his time and leaves.

He tells his friends, "Sadly I don't think the existing layout of the Dragon Island would suit a cave cove base build because it took quite a bit of bushwhacking to get to the dragon's lair. So if we wanted to turn it into a cave cove type base we'd have to build an artificial cave close to the water line and ensure said cave doesn't flood. I mean it can be done w/ wall of stone spells and transmute mud to rock spells I believe if we really wanted it. I suppose if we were being efficient we'd shape the cave out of mud first and then harden it into rock and patch whatever holes there were with wall of stone. I think if we aren't going to try to build our own cove cave (as the dragon cave still reeks of dragon) where we can sail the Rose into and have her dock at the Dragon Island then we should set about purchasing a base of operations on Bridge Island. While Minotaur Island would be my number 1 preference being a minotaur myself the goal of the petals is to unite the Taur peoples and to that end I'd say Bridge Island is the best choice if we can't have our cave cove on Dragon Island "

Tsak can't fault Ayotnom's logic Bridge Island sounds good. Perhaps we need to sail over there and have a look around for something suitable, once the crew are rested of course.

Falco starts to consider the idea of what he now considers his home and quickly realizes that it is the Rose. Some may consider the various isles home but for him it is more and more the ship that is his home base so its location doesn't matter so much.

DM Mark - Home?
Tuesday October 1st, 2024 11:52:03 PM

Ayotnom discusses the limitations of making the dragons cave the Petal's new home. He suggests Bridge Island might be the best option, as it represents all three of the Tauric races.

Falco really considers The Rose his true home, but agrees making Bridge Island their base of operations is a good idea.

Beech is ready to head to Bridge Island, but wants to find an unoccupied place to use.

Panzer isn't quite sure. Relaxed from his massage, he's ready to take on the challenge of an old dragon cave. Still, Bridge Island makes some sense as well, and he's willing to check it out.

Tsak agrees to head for Bridge Island once the crew has had their shore leave, which Mak has so generously funded. Tsak sees Panzer come back refreshed from his massage, so he heads that way himself.

Tsak gets the location of the place Panzer visited. Upon arriving, Tsak is greeted warmly since all the Petals are well known at Fort Beast. The monotaurs there see the half-orc as a bigger challenge than what they first thought of the little badger-man. Afterall, of a small ursine could handle a serious minotaur massage, a half-orc certainly can. Soon, a make masseuse is at work on Tsak's mussels, massaging them into submission. Given the fine oils used, Tsak emerges from the place rather sore, but smelling of oakmoss and jasmine. But he soon realizes the benefit of massage as his muscles later return to their regular locations.

A few days later the crew is all done with their surely leave and the heroes board their ship and make for bridge island. They sail around the island looking for an uninhabited cove as Beech mentioned. This little island has a single usable bay and is otherwise hedged by small beaches at the base of cliffs. The bay has a fishing village and a tiny castle -- Hearthold Keep -- overlooking it. The village is home to a unique community of all three Taur races, as well as a few others, trying to live in harmony, united in their belief that the three gods of the Taurs are all aspects of Domi.

There is a dock at this bay, deep enough to accommodate The Rose. As you pull up to the dock, you find that the The Rose and the heroes are well known here. As the people learn that the Petals may seek a permanent home on Bridge Island, you are approached by several seeking to offer a dwelling at inflated prices, but this is soon stopped. A Liontaur pushes the others aside. In a loud voice he says, "Stop it! All of you! You seek a quick profit from these our heroes. Do you not understand what they have done for all the Taurs? We owe them much. And what's more than that, having the heroes here is an honor, an honor that can only benefit Bridge Island?"

Then he turns to the Petals. "We are honored that you would seek to dwell here. I am Leonnic, master of the docs and a merchant here. Come, let us discuss how we can meet your needs. We are a humble community, but I am sure we can work with you to find a suitable place for you to call home."

"There is an old mansion here, on the outskirts of town. It needs some work, but it is a big place and not far from the docks. People like to pretend it's haunted, but no one actually believes that. Will that do? How can we be of service? What is it you need?"

Ayotnom says, "I don't suppose this mansion has any secret passages that might lead to a cave cove off the ocean? I mean if not that's okay I just have this dream of one day having the Rose being able to dock at a cave cove and spring forth from a cave cove but perhaps it isn't meant to be. The previous island we considered as a base of operation had a cave way too far from the water line and we talked about using magic to shape the terrain to suit what we wanted but it wasn't worth it? Also with respect to the rumors of the haunting might the mansion have physical squatters perhaps or even actually be haunted. I mean I can understand being skeptical but we've seen some things on our adventures so a ghost wouldn't necessarily shock me nor be a deal breaker. Maybe the ghost if it is there is friendly or maybe it just needs help with some final business to move on?"

OOC: We have some pretty high level casters, can we use their spells to carve out a cave large enough for the Rose? Even if it's too far away from the mansion we could build a stairway into the rock to the cave, right? Also, if this mansion doesn't require us to "clean it out" we just zip forward the amount of time needed to complete the job?

Mak was fine with the mansion being their base, but he wanted it to be defensible and was willing to throw some money at the problem to address that. He withheld his council however until he saw what was being offered.

"We want to be the legal owners of the mansion and don't want to fix the place up only to have people show up later, so I think we should pay something and get a proper deed from the town." Mak said to Leonic. "Also to the rest of you, we'll be needing work done on the place. We don't expect that to be free and we'll pay reasonable prices for that work. Spread the word." Mak said at last.

Tsak is humbled by the adulation of the local folk.

For Tsak and others: Sense Motive or Knowledge Nobility DC 15: Highlight to display spoiler: {All the Petals quickly conclude that while folk hold the PCs in high esteem, they also tend to see them as benefactors, both in terms of protection and because the heroes' wealth dramatically exceeds typical townsfolk. They are not looking for a handout, nor to cheat the PCs. But they do expect fair payment for goods and services. The PCs also know that simply spreading around extravagant amounts of money generally ends badly, as it encourages greed and invariably leads to resentment from those that may not get as much as another. It can be a tricky balance, but, as with nobility, such is the burden of wealthy heroes.}

Mak seems to already understand the above and given his background, may read it without a roll.

Ayotnom muses developing a secret entrance for their ship along with a secret tunnel to the mansion (the Petalcave?) Falco and Beech chime in on this. Mak says he would like to buy the place if they are going to fix it up, and Falco agrees.

Leonic clarifies, "I mean no offense, though I fear I may have mislead you. The mansion is not for sale. It was built by a wealthy family, but has fallen into disuse and is owned by the town. You see, when the last family abandoned that place, they also abandoned the town, which had a bad impact on all. We offer it to you without rent if you wish to live there and make the modest improvements needed to bring it up to your standards. If, after you have been here some time and are committed to our community, I'm sure the Town Council will transfer it to you without cost. I mean no insult good sirs, but we want your commitment more than your money.

"But come, take a look."

Leonnic leads you to the mansion, which sits on the outskirts of town. The two story building is sized for large inhabitants. The ground floor is mostly a living/dining area and kitchen. The second floor has 6 bedrooms, but this could easily be reconfigured into more if sized for medium folk. It has a small tower that provides a good vantage point over the town and harbor. It's clearly fallen into disuse as he said. A couple kids that were playing inside scatter as you enter. He tells you that the roof and the fireplaces will need repair, and the place will need a good scrubbing. The garden areas in front and back are wild, but there is a well and it's in good shape.

Knowledge Engineering DC 12:Highlight to display spoiler: {You can tell that the stone walls and the wooden floors and roof timbers are solid and in good shape. Fixing the roof and cleaning the fireplaces should be simple. Replacing a few floor boards, tending to the masonry in the walls, fixing a warped door here and there should set things to right should not be a problem. It could all be done for about 800 gp, or half that if you put your paid ship's crew to the task.}

Later that day, Caliphon and Yuria seek out the Petals. Some of you may recall that this is a male Centaur and female Liontaur married couple. They were feeling some disapproval at their union from family on Liontaur Isle and decided to relocate to Bridge Island. They greet you warmly.

A few days later, Seolas and Erdinan stop by, excited because they heard you were on the island. They live maybe a day's travel from town. Some of you may recall this is a pair of male minotaurs that offered you a place to stay. At the time, another minotaur in your group, Son Imod, inadvertently gated in a dangerous and powerful fey woman that was a member of Maab's fey court, a dicey encounter that the Petals handled well.

Assuming the Petals agree, just tell me generally what you do over the next week or two. Please also wrap up any Catacombs transactions.

(In spite of the length of this post, I don't want to make the game all about fixing up a mansion. We can administer all that. It's time to get the module moving.)

Tsak likes the feel of this village, sure they're a little over-awed but they seem like good people. The mansion will polish up just fine. He's not sure honestly how much time they'll spend here in the future, not much if its anything like the past few years.

Tsak spends some time getting to know some of the townsfolk as well as taking walks in the nearby area, getting a better feel for his new 'home'.

Mak looked the place over and saw that it could indeed be renovated for a small amount of money. That the locals wouldn't want to sell it to them was a problem, but living rent free in exchange for the renovations seemed fair.

"If it's as you say and we'd live here rent free in exchange for sprucing the place up, that's agreeable to me." He said to Leonic after touring the building and grounds.

He then turned to the petals. "I say we employ our quartermaster aboard the rose to be project manager for the renovation. He can stay here and hire staff, negotiate with workers, and furnish the place sufficiently. If he does a good job, we can make him the majordomo and pay him appropriately. If he isn't interested in that job, he can hire one from the locals or train Caliphon and Yuria to do that job if they are willing. Either way I think we should offer that couple positions in the household since we already trust them. I'm thinking positions subordinate to the majordomo for now, but later as head of staff. They can work out duties between them. What's everyone think? Caliphon and Yuria, is that ok with you two?" Mak asked at the end. .

Panzer understands the inhabitants desire for sair payment and will strive to use their goods and services as he carve out his own niche here. To his eye the house needs work, a fair amount of it. Again hiring local help may build strong ties with the island's inhabitants, though that is not usually Panzers department.

When Mak asks about a sea cave and tunnel up to the mansion, Panzer smiles. He had planned on carving out a burrow under the mansion proper anyway, a few tunnels would be just fine.

As to "living there" for years the Badgerkin frowns. They were adventurers...living somewhere usually eant like staying there, and unless adventure was going to come to them, that might be an overly optomistic view of their plans.

DM Mark - Settling Into Local Life
Friday October 4th, 2024 2:44:01 AM

Ayotnom assesses the structure of this mansion, and declares it solid and only in need of modest repairs. He wants to investigate an island the mysterious woman wanted to keep folks away from.
(I'm afraid you have me at a loss. What island is that?)

Falco offers to fund the entire repair of the house.

Tsak like the village and this place. He spends some time getting to know the locals, and he finds he has no shortage of curious folk wondering what's going on with the mansion. They're equally curious about the Petals, asking questions about where they've been and what they've seen. Tsak learns that Calaphon and Yuria, as well as Seolas and Erdinan, are considered to be people of note since they seem to have some past history with the Petals. Tsak also speaks with Fewenryth, the gruff barkeep at the Sow's Ear whom the party met before.

Mak comes up with a plan for renovating the house. He hires Ransey from the ship to oversee renovations. Ramsey engages the crew, who prove quite adept at anything having to do with wood, and some are also adept at working with the masonry as well. Calaphon and Yuria are approached about managing the Petals' household. They are thrilled to be able to help, as they live nearby. Yuria proves to be an excellent cook, and works to get the kitchen in order. Calaphon begins with the gardens outside, in particular setting up a vegetable and herb garden to supply the house.

Panzer understands the tricky relationship with the locals. He makes sure that Ramsey hires local folk to help with some of the work on the house, which proves to be a popular decision. Many people are interested in helping, and Ramsey does a good job managing this.

Beech decides he's best suited to repair the roof since he can fly. Beech draws a big crown flying over the house, however he soon learns that flying is no substitute for having the skills needed for roof repair. Soon Ramsey gently intercedes, hiring a local roofer to make slates to repair and replace broken part of the roof to ensure a watertight cover for the house, and Beech makes the roofer's life easier by helping transport materials up on top.

A week goes by, and the mansion is a beehive of activity. Soon things are looking ship-shape and activity begins to slow.

Following a few weeks of rest and relaxation, rumors begin to spring up. Of course, gossip mongers and mischief makers are known to spread rumors on a regular basis. Most folk pay little attention since much of what they hear seems to be rather far fetched.

I'd like everyone to make one roll for gathering information using either Diplomacy or Knowledge: Local.

When Panzer returned with the sale of goods from the last adventure Mak was flabbergasted. It was much more than he had expected and wondered if he'd be able to even protect that amount of funds.

So he made a decision and borrowed the groups portable hole and shoved it in his pocket. A short ride into town on Elmer and he was at the small castle that the rulers here administered the government from. Gaining an audience wasn't too difficult, though he did have to return after his first unannounced appearance, but within a week he was in front of the local lord.

"It seems I've come upon a windfall of sorts." Mak began. "It's really much more than I can use at present and I'd like to make some arrangements with you to make some improvements to the island. Perhaps even make the place more attractive for people to live or visit."

Mak had 70,000 gold that he considered to be extra. He could have donated it to the Purple Duke, but he wanted to use it locally, so his plan was to offer it to the local lord.

"In the grand scheme of things this money isn't that much. It could purchase a warship, pay for construction of walls, buy weapons and armor for the militia, or any number of things. For now however I think I'd like to prepay the taxes for everyone on the island. My associates might contribute at some point as well if the charity moves them, I will likely be adding to this contribution as well in the years to come if I'm successful enough. For now I think it would provide some relief to the people of Bridge island for a while without creating too much inflation."

Mak insisted on a contract being drawn out specified the terms of the deal and two copies for himself, one of which he sent to the Purple Duke to record the transaction. He trusted the local lord, but money could corrupt anyone and he wanted to ensure it was spent to help the residents of Bridge Island via tax relief.

DM Mark - A Name For The Town?
Saturday October 5th, 2024 2:14:11 AM

Ayotnom gives some thought to the administration of the Petals house. He also seeks out information locally, as does Mak, Panzer and Falco.

Panzer hears rumors that the locals think there has been an increase in the number of rats on the island, and probably the other islands as well.

Ayotnom hears that a dark cult has arisen that seeks an item of great power, an item that was thought destroyed long ago. None are sure what this item is.

Falco learns that an item of power is being sought by a shadowy group on Liontaur Isle.

Mak also hears rumors about a dark cult whose purpose is to bring about domination of the Wold by Evil Dragons. They believe the dragons have become “too complacent” in their dealings with the races of the Wold, and that they need to assume their rightful place over these lesser races.

—---------------------------------
Mak is taken aback at the amount of loot he received from Panzer's sale of goods. He seeks out the local ruler to gift 70,000 gp to offset all local taxes for a time. He learns that this ruler is largely a ceremonial roll, and that power is held by a town council which this ruler is a part of. Mak is later met by Leonnic, the liontaur master of the docks and a local merchant, and an old centaur fisherwoman. He greets Mak, and introduces the centaur woman he is with.

"Greetings Maklin Ebonblade. This is Kyrstah. We represent the town council. We understand you wish to make a rather sizable donation to the town to offset the town's taxes for some time. This is very kind and generous of you. We are happy to draw up any legal documents you like, but I have a counter proposal for you. The wealthiest in our community do not need such relief. We would like to instead use your proposed funds to cancel taxes for the poorer members of our community, and use the rest to improve our dock facilities. From our dock workers, to our fisher folk, to our merchants - all in the town depend on and benefit from these docks in one way or another. We believe that with the presence of such strong heroes and a greatly improved ability to handle larger merchant ships, this town could really prosper. We also believe such increased trade might allow us to convince the operators of the Catacombs to establish an entrance here. Is this acceptable to you?

"Now, to honor this generous donation, we would like to give our town and harbor a proper name. What name would you propose? We will of course need to meet and adopt a proper name, but we will give careful consideration to what you propose."

Tsak is able to confirm that people have heard rumors that an item of great power is veins sought, but has no more information about that. He keeps his eyes on a mechanical chest at the mansion.

Ayotnom shares the local tales he's heard, along with his thoughts about what it might mean.

Panzer reminds everyone he heard someone who had a friend who's brother is a sailor and spoke of more rats on the islands.

Falco offers to help the local blacksmith, a female minotaur named Neotra Singlestep. At first, she is not interested in the help. Falco is persistent, so she courteously allows him in. Soon, she learns the little owl-man has some skills! Neotra gets relatively few requests for weapons, and those that she does tend to be for large sized creatures. But Falco is able to pitch in with smaller weapons, and is a big help even with routine smithing work. Falco has a new friend. What's more, he learns Neola is a member of the town council.

Mak agrees to the proposal for targeted tax relief, along with improvement of the dock facilities. He mulls over some names for the harbor town. Leonnic chooses Roseport.

The following evening, several (or all) of the party is in The Sow's Ear, the local tavern, throwing hand axes. They're more like full axes for all but Ayotnom. A woman enters the tavern, flanked by four armored men.

This beautiful elven woman is dressed in simple traveling robes, her platinum blonde hair pulled up in a tight bun atop her head. The four armored men keep a sharp eye out. They seem to regard the party warily but say nothing.

Tsak can see that this woman is indeed attractive, and he worries what effect she may have on Ayotnom and Mak. He looks at the guards over. The guards wear well worn and maintained chain armor under a breastplate, swords and shields worn but not in hand.

Panzer feigns drunkenness as he hefts that is a pretty big axe with a practiced ease that belies his small stature. His axe hits true, clanging into the back of a previous axe as he falls forward. Sense motive on the guards tells him that they are watchful and wary. The woman is attractive and confident, and probably more than she seems. Her guards move in their armor with a practiced ease. The guards smile a little at Panzers fall, though not in malice. The woman does not acknowledge the fall.

Falco had a nice time with his new blacksmith friend. Back at the Sow's Ear, Falco is suspicious of this woman and her guards, though they give him no reason for apprehension.

Beech is careful how much he drinks, knowing alcohol and magic can be a bad mix. If course, so can throwing axes. This makes him worry about some of the stains on the floor in this area. He goes back with the others to the Petals' new home. On the way, he asks the woman, "You wouldn't be from Imod City would you?" She regards the liontaur, and simply says "No."

Shortly, the Petals and their five guests are in their new home.

Once inside, the woman waits for everyone to get settled. She looks around the room with a careful eye before speaking.

"As I said, my name is Looma. The reputation of your group around the Taur Isles, and indeed other parts of the Wold, is well known. So I think you are the right ones to approach for help.

"Some years ago, there was a sword of great power that was destroyed on Liontaur Isle. Some of my fellow mages believe this sword, or perhaps part of it, has reappeared somehow.

This item was once wielded by Gargul, the God of Death. Back then, he was a very different Gargul, and he sought to rule the Wold by force, meeting out death to any that opposed him. But he is no longer the evil god he once was.

"There is a cult that has arisen, and they seem to think that they can somehow bring back this dark Gargul if they can retrieve this sword. While I doubt this is true, it is certain that letting this sword fall into the hands of this cult can only spell ill for the Wold. And if they can somehow achieve their goals and they have a way to bring an evil Gargul back to the Wold, well, even the remotest possibility of that must be prevented.

"Now I know you are heroes, but even noble heroes should be paid. If you are able to find and bring me this sword, you will be rewarded handsomely."

Mak was suspicious, but the beauty of the elf woman blunted that suspicion just a little. "It's ok, I was tired of embarrassing my friends at axe throwing."

"In my experience, dealings with "gods" never go well." Mak replied. "While I cannot speak for everyone here, your warning at least warrants some investigation and we happen to be available."

As for the reward, Mak was little concerned about it as he was presently sitting on enough money to retire on or buy a warship and then retire, or make another massive donation to the town and then retire. For a moment he daydreamed about half-elf babies before he shook himself out of it and finished.

"Let us look into the matter further, do you require a place to stay while you are here? We have enough room for you and your entourage if so."

Panzer snorts but keeps his own council.

What he thought was that he had little use for the gods. Sure, someone allowed Falco and clerics like him to channel power to heal folks. But who said it was a god? Did gods allow wizards to cast their spells? Nope, that was study and work and practice. Gods weren't involved with sorcerers either as far as Panzer knew. The sorcerer had blood in them from some other bloodline that made them able to manipulate magic.

Gargul in particular was a disappointment to him. If powerful adventurers could buy their way back into life when they were killed with the promise of good deeds then why not a farmer who has always been kind and looked out for his fellow villagers? It all seemed ....rigged to him.

Thus he was quiet when she asked.

They would get paid, allowing him to afford better gear, allowing him even more of an edge in a fight, so why not take the job. Besides, living here without fights and puzzles and intrigue was going to make him fat and lazy and bored. Adventure was a good thing.

"Last time we were involved with something of this power level I ended up an owl." Falco thinks back to the issues surrounding the Saragrass and cannot help but shudder as he hope this does not become a Wold wide issue. "We should look into this and, if there is a threat, keep it contained. We don't need to shake the foundation of the Wold again."

The beautiful elven woman stands in the Petals mansion. Refurbishments have mostly been done, but some continue so the place, while in much better shape than it was, is not pristine. She seems unconcerned by this. The guards look around, assessing their surroundings. They seem mostly at ease.

Mak is a bit taken with the woman. This earns him a half smile. He says that dealings with the gods never goes well, and he agree that the Petals should seek out this item of power.

Panzer finds Gargul to be a disappointment, but keeps his thoughts to himself.

Falco says, "Last time we were involved with something of this power level I ended up an owl." He agrees that the Petals should look into this matter.

Beech says that if even a portion of that weapon has reappeared, It would embody a great amount of residual power. He says he hadn't heard about such a cult.

The woman says, "I expected heroes with your reputation would be willing to help. We don't know much about the sword. It was rumored to be a jet black sword that seemed to swallow the light, but the records don't say much more than that. You are right that even a portion of the sword would hold great power."

"I cannot say if the sword is dangerous. I would use great care with it. It was destroyed by acid, but if some or all of it has returned, it's not clear what power it may hold now."

"Our divinations suggest a location, but I must place a Geas spell on one of you to ensure you return this item to me before I tell you more. Whom among you is your leader?"

She pulls a scroll out of her pocket.

Ayotnom says, "Interesting. Your information is similar to rumors we've heard. Though what we heard indicated that a cult who worships evil dragons was trying to find some sort of powerful artifact. You certainly have a lot more specifics. Unless we have 2 cults running around with one cult worshiping Dark Gargul and the other Worshiping Evil Dragons and they are both looking for some sort of artifact of power with the Dark Gargul Cult looking for this sword. Not that I'm against a payday mind you but if this artifact is so powerful and mustn't fall into the wrong hands, which I think the party agrees, and don't take this the wrong way ma'am but I have to ask what makes you qualified to be the person who takes possession of such a dangerous thing? Do you have experience in storing and protecting dangerous artifacts? If this sword is really such a threat is it possible it might be better off destroyed?"

He pays attention to the answers Looma gives to his questions (sense motive: 23)

Tsak likes where Ayotnom is going with his questions. He himself is far from convinced that this woman is the 'right hands' for such a powerful item. And the Geas spell adds to his concerns. The ranger is more than a little tempted to decline this lady's offer but search for the item anyway. That way the Petals can decide for themselves what is the best outcome should they be successful in finding it.

He continues to listen but its obvious to him that the Petals will need to discuss the issue in private before agreeing on their next action. Perhaps the fact that Kiwina (in Tsaks mind the leader of the Petals) is currently unavailable will work in their favor and buy them time to investigate this lady and her claims a little.

"Black Sword" peeked the Ebonblade nobles interest, but returning with it under a geas did not. "I don't think many of us are inclined to be coerced by a geas spell. We can search out the item ourselves and determine what's best for the Wold on our own." Mak stated reluctantly, knowing that he might anger the beautiful elf. Still in Mak's mind, Black Sword/Ebonblade was ringing some bells and he wondered if the device might be a family heirloom.

Falco agrees with Ayotnom and Mak so far and keeps his council. Privately he is pretty sure that his party is capable of overcoming a geas unless the caster is wildly powerful and if they are why would they come to the Petals for help unless something else is going on.

While the others talk Falco watches the guards assessing them because, again, if they are worth anything why would they not help here collect the sword. This is all suspect to him now.

Go look for an artifact to protect the Wold? Sure he was up for that. No problem. Have his mind held captive to deliver it to someone he hasn't even met for more than a couple of minutes? That was a big plate of nope, with a smaller serving of whipped nope as a side dish.

Armalad waits to hear what Looma has to say

Ayotnom relates rumors he's heard about a cult of evil dragon worshipers. He asks Looma why she can be trusted with this artifact, and if it would be better off destroyed. He tries to get a read on this woman.

Tsak ponders these things, but remains quiet. Falco is also suspicious, but remains quiet. As does Panzer.

Mak replies, ""I don't think many of us are inclined to be coerced by a geas spell. We can search out the item ourselves and determine what's best for the Wold on our own."

Beech objects to the Geas, and adds, "We don't know who you are, or if you are the correct person to be entrusted with the sword. Without further information, it makes it difficult to make those decisions..."

As the party uniformly objects to having a Geas spell cast on anyone, she sighs. She puts the scroll back in her pocket. "I didn't think you'd submit to a Geas, and I'll confess I'm a bit relieved. Neither would I. It speaks well for your integrity.

"You mention an evil dragon cult. That could be an aspect of this Gargul cult as well, but use care - rumors can be fickle. It's interesting though that you've heard there is a group seeking this sword. I have heard this as well, and I suspect there may be multiple people seeking it. Do you know more about this group? That may help.

"Why should you trust me? I cannot give you no reason to trust me, other than the fact that I am coming to you for help. What you can trust is that based on the things you've heard, it seems we may be seeking the same thing. Add to that, I have information from associates - powerful diviners with the Star Mages. We think we know which island this is on. I have a map to the location which I hope is accurate. But you must agree that you will bring this thing back to me. And of course, if I have this information, others may as well.

"As for the sword, or what there is of it at this point, it is indeed a powerful artifact. Should it be destroyed? Yes, but that is why I'm asking for your help. You see, the tales tell us that the sword was destroyed. If it has come back, it is probably a simple matter to try to destroy it again. I would first like to work with you to secure it - let's start there.

"If you need to discuss this first, I can return later tonight or perhaps tomorrow. But if, as we both suspect, others seek it as well, delays could be a problem. I could try to return to the Star Mages to see if they will mount an effort to find the sword, but that is not really their sort of thing. Which is what has brought me to you."

Ayotnom doesn't think she's lying, but he's sure she is more than a mere messenger with guards. She's also a bit haughty, though she tries to hide it. And she is sincerely anxious about the sword falling into the hands of another.

The guards are stoic.

Now knowing something that might actually help, Panzer speaks " We encountered some 'pirates, that had been hired to cause a fuss over on the opposite side of the isles from Lionyaur Isle, where you say this sword might be. Suck a distraction would draw eyes away from Liontaur isle at least for a time, the pirates were not the sharpest knives in the drawer. When questioned they described a masked woman who smelled of dry scales and lilies and paid them to cause trouble with heavy gold. Gold that would be in either a dragon's hoard or an old dwarven vault. She appeared to be neither, dragon nor dwarf, but, you know, illusions. This ring any bells for you."
Panzer seems much more relaxed now that the possibility of violence has passed. The guards will note that he has now moved to more of a position opposite his comrades, having moved there nonchalantly to pour himself a drink, he would now be in a perfect flanking position should violence errupt. Fortune favors the prepared and all that.

Falco assumes the group will be taking this up and leaves the details to the others as he approaches the guards. He is curious if they will react to his approach as it may be a way to get a a feel of who they are dealing with. He realizes where the Petals are on the general power scale of the Wold and doubts the guards approach their level of ability.

"Hey there. Can I get you folks a drink or anything? You don't need to worry about a threat in here after all and if something did pop up we would deal with it anyway." He pauses for a moment. "Oh, I am Falco nice to meet you."
