DM Mitch and Hugh Beach Fight Friday October 11th, 2024 9:30:57 AM Hank tries to break the tension by asking if anyone has been to Plateau City and tells of his last visit involving LLamas and suggest the party take a trip there at some point. Ash smiles at Hank and agrees it would be a fine trip and wants to see the Llama restaurant when this mess is over with Drack sheathes his sword and helps Loryn set up camp but he tells the gnome, “Well played” Mortimer is getting the impression that Loryn is getting all the kudos and figures he said just as much with fewer words but he’s glad Loryn followed his lead. He chimes in on the Llama conversation only to realize the story belonged to one of his past lives Loryn nods at Drack and strokes the fire as Hank begins his story. He tells Hank he’s never been east and Windhorn might be the largest settlement he’s been to. He agrees little gnome big city could be an adventure and he sends the message to keep their guards up Manolo sighs as he goes around the camp hearing parts of conversations. He wants to eat already and all this talk brings him memories of home as its been a long time since he visited. Gnubert helps setup camp and assists Loryn in cooking dinner Manolo tells the others if anyone ever gets the chance to visit Effacia his grandmother has a bakery there and thinks about the other kids and the bread and other confectionary.
In the end it’s only about 40 minutes before the Minotaur the party was expecting to show up. Flanked by his two cat-women caster friends and a few human monks he approaches the party with a smile and greeting before noticing the 2nd group and becoming wary. ”What’s this about?”

Drack listens, and once Mortimer speaks up, Drack chimes in. "You may be right on that Mortimer. Perhaps a storm is just a storm, but the timing of it might be concerning. We should definitely be on our toes."
Drack turns to Loryn. "I haven't been here lately, but if you all decided this was best, and are comfortable with giving them the box, then let's do so."
Drack winces a bit as Hank makes it obvious what he thinks about an honor duel, and inwardly disagrees entirely.

Ash wasn't ever happy to see the minotaur, but right bow he made the whole situation a little more bearable. The mage kept his mouth shut and let the others speak.

Hank explains the presence of the other group, their purpose and their proposed “honor duel” and how they now want to have a conversation with the order. Mortimer suggests a third party that magicked up the storm might exist and is something to think about. Manolo is looking curiously at how things are going to unfold. Drack listens and chimes in to what Mortimer says, “Perhaps a storm is just a storm but the timing is concerning” and agrees folks should be on their toes. Drack tells Loryn if giving the order the box is for the best then they should do so. He also inwardly winced at Hank’s honor duel opinion. Ash isn’t happy to see the Minotaur, but it makes the situation a bit better.
The Minotaur accepts the box and bows deeply to the group. ”You have saved lives this day. We will ensure the box is never used again, and will forever remember your assistance. As promised we brought wagons enough to carry your loot back home. We also promised you payment in magical items. When you have decided on your reward it shall be delivered.”
And with that the group vanish into the woods. The other adventuring group attempts to speak with them but are ignored and the Minotaurs group can all fly, leaving them behind quickly.
The other adventurers are very frustrated.

Loryn wishes the group well and nods as they promise the box will never again be used. Loryn doesn't argue about the wagons, though he does not think the group needs them. They have a ship offshore and Windhorn and the Catacombs are just a day sail to the south. Though as he thinks about it, the wagons would make for a good underwater clubhouse.
Seeing the sour looks on the other adventuring party, Loryn takes fetches a bowl of his stew (previous post skill check 30) and walks it over to the golden minotaur. Holding it out for her to take, "You entire group is welcome to our camp and I made plenty of stew. Adventures don't run on empty stomachs and as long as we are not competing for the same prize, I wish you all the success to your future"

After the other group leaves, Drack will walk over to the the gold Minotaur. "A fight for the box was not in the cards on this day. however, if you wish to fight with me, just so we might possibly know who was right in Domi's eyes, I will happily agree. no spells from friends, just you and me, and our ability to wage war for Domi. Loryn wishes the Sacred Order well and doesn’t argue about the wagons, though he doesn’t think the group needs them considering they have the ship and sailing to Windhorn and the catacombs is a short voyage. He does think the wagons would make a good underwater clubhouse. (see e-mail about geographical errors) He then walks over to the other group with a peace offering of stew and a camp to share and explains that as long as they aren’t competing for the same prize he wishes them success in the future. Drack knows what he’d like as his reward and is even willing to pay the difference considering it is slightly more than what is on offer. He walks over to the minotaur and offers a nonlethal one on one contest to determine who was right in Domi’s eyes. Manolo is happy they didn’t have to fight anymore Gnubert gladly hands the box over and helps with dinner afterwards.
Some of the party decide to head over to the other group for conversation and a peace offering. It falls a bit flat - they accept the food and seem to like it, but have obviously just eaten so don’t do much more than taste it. Well except one of them, who eats anything offered with glee and takes anything his comrades don’t eat.
The golden minotaur looks particularly troubled. “I don’t like any of this. Hopefully your judgment of those people were sound; I fear what they might resort to to keep their secrets. For all your fears of his character, by my judgment Hiroshi has lines he will not cross. I feel he has greater plans for both our groups, and I hope next time we might be allies instead of adversaries. If you let your personal feelings align you with his enemies things may progress far past an honor duel in the future.”
The golden minotaur considers Drack’s offer before shaking her head, [b]“The point is now moot. Besides, we must return and report this failure. No doubt we’ll have to seek out some other object of power, hopefully one less dangerous for Hiroshi to present to his gathering. ”
The other group packs up and leaves. It looks like it’ll be raining for at least several more hours. With the shelter of the cove the party could head back to the ship safely and get out of the rain, or the could continue to camp on shore until the rain stops (also, see e-mail about the trip back)

Loryn pays a little attention to Drack and the Minotaur, but not too much. He gives no thought to the speech, Hiroshi and practically anyone else can have all of the plans they like, the Argentium was not beholden to any of them and with this hunt in the rear view, Loryn thinks it unlikely he would be willing to work with either group again. His decision on the matter was based on the mind that the cultists might very well be correct, such objects are akin to slavery.
The gnome is on to other matters. "Lets take the long boat back to the ship and get out of this rain. Nothing more on the beech for us."

Loryn pays little heed to the back and forth between Drack and the golden minotaur. The party heads to the ship and gets out of the rain. Ducet seems curious as to what all that was about but doesn’t inquire. Though the cove protects the ship, those who get sea sick probably don’t have a pleasant night with all the extra rocking in the waves.
In the morning Ducet asks for a destination. ”Do you want to unload the rest here, head back to Thistleport, or what?”

Mortimer seems distracted by something. For once, he isn't obsessing over loot. He realizes that is weird for him. As he dwells on these things, he is perfectly fine with going along with whatever the group wants to do. He searches his soul and all the voices around him for answers.

Gnubert suggests they sail as close as they can as they should get a better deal in a larger city. He also inquires about resizing the breastplate to trade his breast plate for it Ash suggests they should take the stuff where they can get the best price and maybe has a llama bar. Mortimer is distracted by something and acts a bit weird for him.
(OOC: my interpretation of magic armor / arms and party size differentials; I always interpreted magic items as changing size to fit the wielder so if Bob the minotaur claimed the magic armor it would become large, if Saul the human claimed it instead it would be medium or if Gage the halfling claimed it it would become small)
With their course set and the weather clear the party sets sail. It takes about half the day to get back to town and the few people on the water stare at the unusually large arriving ship. The party can head to town and hire some wagons, or fill the smaller boats and try to row up river. The latter might be faster, but still take a couple trips and be a lot of work compared to letting some animals haul it on wagons.

Drack lets Loryn make the call on the route they take, but will be on guard for trouble or thieves the entirety of the journey. Drack will claim nothing in the treasure, believing the other group to provide what he requested. Some of it might be useful in the future, but for now, he would wait and see how things divvied up before contemplating the catacombs.
"Either way Loryn, the majority of us should stay with the treasure."
"I don't suppose we can find some evil to destroy after dealing with all this loot? I would thoroughly enjoy destroying something that was evil to the core."

He doesn’t claim anything in the treasure instead waiting on the other group to provide what he wanted and waits to see how things are divided up while pondering the catacombs. He opines the majority should stay with the treasure and then find something evil to destroy later. Hank opines that logistics like death and taxes is a universal constraint before suggesting using wagons to convey the treasure. Gnubert tells Hank either way. (OOC: It resizes. As long as the party is cool with the swap you can update now. You formally have control of the new armor) Manolo agrees with Hank about the defensibility of land versus sea Ash also agrees since you can’t drown on dry land
With a plan set the party sends someone to hire enough wagons. It’s pretty easy, the party are well known enough, and soon a dozen carts with oxen are ready for loading at the docks. It takes a couple hours and many boat rides but everything is unloaded and Ducet makes ready to leave. ”If you ever need help salvaging stuff again you know where to find me. Next time though we’ll have to split the profits, if every ship you look for is this loaded I could retire.”
The party continues to draw a lot of attention as they head though home towards town.

The discussion of the danger of robbery puts the party on guard. Though many come and look as they pass buy and several congratulations are given no one accosts the group, though some have to be warded off from looking so close so that something could ‘accidentally’ go missing.
It’s a bit of a long walk from the docks to home but the party manage to get their loot home safely and stow it away. With the job done it looks like the party has some free time to do whatever for the foreseeable future.

Mortimer is uncharacteristically quiet. He feels a weight upon him as more and more memories resurface from innumerable lifetimes. In the past when things got heavy, he would seek out the solace of spirits at the bottom of a pint; whatever he could get his hands on. Now the idea of losing oneself in drunkenness seems so clichéd and beneath him ... so very banal. Mortimer is truly sick with experience.
He overhears the others talk about the treasure and what to sell and keep. With a heavy sigh, he gets up and goes over to take a look.

He agrees they should stay together until everything is sold. Ash says sell whatever keep whatever, nothing in the pile has his interest Mortimer feels the weight of his past lives catch up with him. In the past he would have looked for relief in the bottom of a bottle but that seems so beneath him now. Sick with experience he gets up to take a look at the treasure pile
The party spend a few days sorting, claiming and selling treasure. They also hear, via various sources, news about town. A lot of the farmers are complaining about the unseasonable rain. Far more than usual, there’s a lot of risk to the crops being drowned and they’re drainage is falling behind. In turn many people are interested in tales of the party’s adventure; anyone who wants to share can probably get free drinks at any inn in exchange for the story.

Loryn apologizes for being so quiet as of late. Selling everything seems a fine course, though the gnome is a little surprised neither Drack nor Hank wants the magical shield that could stop a critical strike.
The magic would be sold in the Catacombs, Loryn heads to Minerva's and after being gone several ten day, looks about with a sour expression upon his face. The Boarding House needed a custodian. An easy enough task made difficult as the Argentium also used the place as their home. A groundskeeper would also likely be a good pick up as well.
First things first though, and the gnome sets about cataloging the current provisions and stocks of the house and sets to replace them by sending orders out for delivery. Once that is complete he brings up the need for a caretaker, and groundskeeper for the boarding house to the group

He starts cataloging and restocking the provisions and brings up their staffing need. He also requests his reward from the cult. Drack explains he has a two-handed weapon so doesn’t have a hand free for a shield and then informs the others he’ll go to the catacombs later today or tomorrow. Hank spends a day cleaning all his gear. Gnubert sorts treasure. Ash reflects on what to request as a reward.
It’s a fairly quiet day with people going about their business. Once news gets out the group is hiring domestic staff there’s a flood of applicants, from the young and hopeful wanting to be around the exciting adventurers to the old and retired seeking to help out their community through helping these important citizens. It takes most of the day to sort applicants.

Of the many, many applicants these are the ones that stand out:
Custodian applicants: Miss Snowguard, an old dwarf woman who was apparently a mage and scholar in the big city most of her life before retiring out here a year or two ago. She focuses on utility magic and ways to use magic to improve the lives of everyday people and promises to use her magic to keep the place meticulously well maintained and clean.
Olf Silversmith, a battle scarred old half-orc caravan guard. Though retired, he’s clearly still got some skills and is good at basic maintenance. He expresses a worry that some kid will try to rob the Argentum while they're gone one of these days, so jumped to apply and promises to keep the place safe and secure anytime they are gone.
Jorgi Fumblefoot, a jovial halfling. A fine cook and all around great guy he’s worked for every inn in town and all of them recommend him. Clever and sharp-eyed he’s certainly capable of watching over the place and will have hot, fresh meals waiting for the party every time they return from some big adventure if they hire him.
Groundskeeper applicants: Willie, a middle aged balding man with dark red hair and a strange, somewhat yellow complexion. Although he speaks in a thick accent that makes him hard to understand he has decades of experience and references.
Cynthia, a younger centaur woman who cites a lot of experience working on one of the local farms. She expresses a love of flowers and big plans to plant them here or there to make the place prettier, but Gnubert gets the impression she also just wants to get away from her family situation. She is very pretty, especially if you like horses though her human half is no slouch either. Possibly impressionable, that wasn’t a question on the application, and as a centaur she’s able to carry up to 900 lbs easily, according to her application.

Loryn finds himself in agreement with Hank on both candidates. As a Mage, Loryn also feels that Snowguard will be capable of handling the business of renting rooms to travelers if the need arises.
With that business set, Loryn goes about a more unusual task request of hiring a carpenter to create a clubhouse that could be folded down for transport and then sunk to the bottom of the bay.

I know that is two additional staff but to be honest it is an additional way to stimulate the economy, and generate additional good will from the town. That should amount to roughly 1100 gold per year. If necessary I will pay for their wages out of my own funds."
Gnubert stays close to Loryn in an attempt to to help keep her promise.

The party considers hiring everyone, or at least all the stand out candidates. While a fine idea and they can certainly afford it the real question is if there’s enough work to actually do for all those people. Things might get busy around here if they’re all trying to find things to do to be useful. (does the party still rent out rooms, or just use the place as their HQ?)

"Minerva's Boarding House is simply not overly large to need so many hands. Minerva kept it running on her own for the most part. A dozen private rooms, a couple of common rooms and the kitchen and we occupy half of the available rooms. If we want to make it House more available while we are out, I can see a cook, an attendant and a Groundskeeper/handyman and I suppose then yes, Olaf as well making the boarding house a staff of 4 and if we have 4 might as well make it all 5 and Miss Cynthia can have the main responsibility of care to mounts"
In typical gnomish fashion, Loryn has talked himself through a full circle.
"All right, agreed. I want to bring them all together and make sure we do not have any 'problems' with them working together and that Miss Snowguard is in charge while we are out."
Assuming there are no objections, Loryn makes arrangements for all of the applicants to arrive the following morning for the news. With regards to the shipwreck, Loryn feels it's too deep and far from their home and wants to do a bit more.
"We've been out for a while again and i think a visit to the deserted homestead that we consecrated last year from the evil shrine and undead, deserves an annual visit. Would love the company and I plan to head out in a few more days, say 4 to ride out and check on it."
