Frit, Aydi, Nora, and Kaida discuss possible interpretations of the fortune telling. Aymar sighs at the obscurity of divinations in general.
Hamlin agrees that the divination seems to be pointing the group towards Thistleport.
Kaida asks Finwe to tell her fortune too, please.
Finwe laughs, and has a different gift for his final offering. “One fortune per day is the limit of my ability,” he says, “and just the one reading is not enough to to make up for the attack on you.”
He pauses, shuffling the cards, but not drawing any. “I will say that I sense that you may be facing enemies that use cold, perhaps. Frost giants? So here is a trifle that may help.” Finwe would like to give you a weapon designed to fight these enemies, a light pick. He explains the magical properties of the weapon, which you come to understand is a +1 cold bane heavy pick. It offers +2 to attack and +2d6 damage against cold using foes.
“The name of the weapon is Icereaver. For humans and dwarves it is a light pick, but for you, my gnomish friend, it would be a heavy pick,” he tells Kaida.

Overnight, Aydi stands watch. Finwe tells Aydi all about the road to Thistleport. You won’t have any problem getting there.
In the morning, Finwe sees you to the regular entrance to the valley, and asks that if you return some day. Walking south along the trade path, you see Dragon Bay ahead of you, with a small walled port town nestled on the shore.
The town’s wall has one major building built into it, and is otherwise studded with narrow towers. The town itself is clearly of gnome-make, with the mostly one-story buildings painted in bright colors, the roofs in neat grey slate tiles or humble thatch. Even from a distance, you can see that the place bustles with energy, as people -- mostly gnomes, halflings, and dwarves -- go to and fro on their business.

Nadia enjoys the tea, and is delighted to keep her cup, thanking the goblins for the well crafted gift, and ensuring to share with them her hot plate. While they can not keep it, she does tell them about it, saying "This is perhaps the most valuable magic item I have. Many will say a sword, or a shield, even a bow. But a true adventurer knows that a hot meal and warm drink is not only the path to help others, but survival. If I find another, perhaps I could get one back to you all. It matches will with this cup you gave me."
She also decides to trust her party, and their new friends to sleep through the night, taking no watch. Family watches family after all. The new pick next to her, and the pathway forward clear for all has her feeling much better about this trip than previously thought.

As you walk through Thistleport you find a thriving community, much more like a regular town than the underground halls of Drakesmeade. At the gate, the guards are welcoming until they see elf and half-orc. Then three dwarves with officer badges ask you to set aside your arms and please come into a room for a chat.
They ask you these questions: Who are you? What is your business? Is there anyone in town who can vouch for you? They want proof that you are not going to disturb the peace.

Any good suggestions? What made you start to worry about us if I may ask? We are just out their looking a bit of adventure and ended up here. Frit is quiet while his friends talk to the guards. He's gotten looks and questions like these from guards this entire life. Things were starting to feel different for him in Drakesmeade, but this is a reminder that while he might have found a place in it, the world remains largely the same as it was when he left for his journey.

"I'll try to be careful, at least first. But if we get totally stuck it would probably be better to risk having wrong people learn of us, than failing the whole thing." she says to Aymar.
True to her word, Nora first tries to chat around discreetly, to steer the conversation without mentioning the Heart or the Forge, but by keeping the talk about times, places and people that might be related to those and make the other party mention the Heart or the Forge. At the same time, she tries to find out who might be trustworthy.

Nadia and Stone seem to not be really able to set their weapons down, given one is a giant cat. She does look at the guards and mutters to herself in dwarven, loud enough for them to hear " If we were going to cause trouble, I think being from different clans as we would make that harder, let alone different races."
She was not a fan of people questioning them when it seems they came only to rest and relax. She seems out of sort on this, but it was mostly due to her not having a shower in a few weeks. " Can we just now get a shower? That is perhaps the one thing that nature does not give. I have frozen enough for the last few weeks, that if I do not see snow again I will be okay. It was nice at first, but now? Not anymore."

Aydi tries diplomacy and a little subterfuge.
Kaida is forthright and comes to understand that very very few elves come through. And even fewer half-orcs. The guards seem especially suspicious of Frit.
Perhaps sensing this, Frit stays quiet. This is not his first goat rodeo, and he knows to keep a deferential profile.
Nora suggests that the contact of the caravan company you arrived with might vouch for you. If you can make a DC18 Know Local or Intelligence check, then Highlight to display spoiler: {That caravan was run by the Thistle company.} You might recall the name of the caravan leader ... She also shows her Blackaxe Clan markers from Drakesmeade.
Nadia is grumpy about the whole process, but her friends’ cooperation and the reputation of dwarves generally suffice to let the guards overlook her attitude.
Aymar cooperates to the letter of necessity, but no more. Hamlin is nicer and cooperates with good cheer.
But as it turns out, your Drakesmeade tokens are enough, along with Frit’s good attitude, and the guards are content to offer stern warnings, and then to let you enter. They let you know that they will be watching.
One guard is more sympathetic, and hears the mutters about showering. She suggests The Crow’s Nest (cheap) or The Orchard’s Table (more expensive, but you get a discount if you are a performer).
As for caravans, she tells Kaida that the notice board at the center of town has that info.

Nadia seems relieved at the idea of a nice hot shower, perhaps her most missed feature of Drakesmeade. Stone seemed less pleased, but he did need a bath considering the distance they have came.
"What exactly should our next move be? I'm not saying we should rush, but maybe some shopping? Frit, you have anymore of that mushroom tea? We should go looking for a shop that sells tea." Nadia ask this before mentioning to the group her choice for the place to stay, pointing out The Orchard Table may be better for them. And would have the better bath.

She likes the Orchard’s Table too, but hopes that performing is not required. She thinks it is probably not.

Nadia comes back with Frit, and after comparing notes, is clearly out of her element. She had not arrived and explored the town her first time, and now she had the chance she really wished to, but knew they did not have time for everything she wished to do. She ask her fellow party members " I would say, we visit the temples of Domi if there is one. I want to visit one of Fhorge if there is one. After that, I am curious about that indie caravan company, but we can not go back just yet. Maybe we can get back before it leaves? And what is this Red Gnomish? Is that a drink? And we are on an adventure I guess, so maybe we can get a good 1,000 gold if Ingrida does not mind more company. I wish I had looked at this when I first came, this is much bigger than home is. How many Cockatrice do you think we can find?"
Nadia seems excited for all the chances to explore, but did have some preferences for what and where they went, just not really to much of it seemed to be dull. Outside of killing rats, which Stone might enjoy. He was a growing boy after all.
She would also cheer on anyone who decides to perform, knowing she does not have the gift of it.

Frit cheers loudly for Nora and Kaida and looks pointedly around the room to make sure that everyone is cheering for them as well.
"A bit of fun sounds, um, good," he replies to Aydi with a grin. "Though it might be wise for me to avoid too m-m-much trouble." His smile fades as he remembers the guards at the city gate.
Frit laughs at Nora's comments about Sylvie Thymol board posting. But then his expression turns serious. "A thousand gold pieces is, um, a lot of money," he says. "But, um, I worry about bringing someone along with us when we don't know if we're in for a fight or, uh, how tough it will be. We have Ingrida to protect, and we, um, don't want anyone to get hurt."
He nods as Kaida speaks. "The temple seems like a good place to start."

Nora is excited about going on an adventure.

Kaida looks closer at the caravan job. Turns out that’s the same caravan that Frit and Nadia used to send messages home.
Frit likes the sound of adventure, but the naturally cautious monk suggests the temples first.

Then we pray for Domi to forgive us for our sure failure at beating it, then we at least see where that woman wants adventure. And I think while waiting on that answer, me and Stone could kill some rats. He would enjoy that."
If no one stops her, she heads out to the other place for the Red Gnomish, clearly sure her dwarven spirit will help her survive. She would wait for any to join her, but she does go.

Less waste to worry about."

Nadia pauses for a moment on Kaida's question, because as a druid is probably did seem odd she would be for ridding them. " While that may be a kindness, and all things have a balance and place, rats are known carriers of many diseases and illnesses. And then they destroy food and habits for other animals, not just us as persons. A regular rat is not an issue, but a giant rat is a problem only created by cities. They would be like an undead to be truthful. Unnatural to me."

Aydi hears Nadias idea of her and Sone killing the rats. "I think Yuki and I will join in the rat hunting as well. We can use it to practice a bit and well we all saw how she enjoys killing rats when we were in the old apartments of Drakesmeade." Aydi will also agree with with what Nadia said to Kaida and add. "I know it is important not to kill all life forms. This is one of those times the good will greatly outlay the bad. It is important to make sure the rats do not end up getting anyone sick."

You decide to try the Red Gnomish first, then the rat job.
As you walk over to The Rusty Ear, you talk about rats. Aydi has lots of ideas for nonlethal solutions, like charm magic and wild empathy. And setting humane traps.
At The Ear, you recognize the place by the sign of a giant ear over the doorway with daisies growing out of it. The place seems nice, not as nice as the Orchard’s Table, but nice.
The proprietor is a gnome nicknamed Rusty. He says that he and his wizard friend are the ones making the drink. He warns that the formula is super spicy! B ut he tries to reassure you with his deep knowledge of green gnomishes. He sends his boy to fetch the wizard, and a cleric as well in case of actual damage.
Who will try the beverage? Anyone who dares, please make a Fort save.

Aydi sees Frits face and all he can think is that he hopes it feels.better when it leaves his body.
The innkeeper makes sure that you all realize that his concoction is still very much a work in progress. And he refuses to serve the beverage until his wizard comrade-in-brewing has arrived. And a local cleric!
Then he serves the beverages.They are red as fire, bubbling, and steaming with white fog pouring off the top. But the glasses are cool as you pick them up. The wizard, a fellow named Voli, is taking notes. He asks you to please think about your sensations so you can tell him about them once you can speak again.
The cleric, a follower of Wardd, chuckles and offers Wardd’s blessing on gamblers such as yourselves! He listens to your hearts before he allows you to drink.
Frit finds that the drink BURNS on the way down! He takes 14 hp fire damage.
Aymar manages to deal with the spicy beverage. “That’s not TOO hot!” He gains damage reduction 4 vs all cold effects for 12 days.
Aydi passes out.
Kaida’s ears burn as steam whistles out of them! She is deafened for 9 hours and takes 6 hp heat damage. . Nadia double over with the worst indigestion ever and will take 9 hp of damage tomorrow morning!
Frit has second thoughts ... too late!

Kaida can feel her ears get burning hot. Fortunately she can't see the literal steam coming from them. She looks at Aydi and can see he's still breathing. This is a very strong drink.
"WHOAH! THAT'S GOT A KICK!" She signals for a cup of water to help cool her throat. It only helps a little though. She describes the feeling to Voli very loudly. "IT'S DEFINITELY HOT. A BIT OF SPICE TO IT. MY EARS ARE SORE TOO. I'M NOT SURE HOW THAT HAPPENED. IS THERE ANY BLOOD?" Kaida rubs her ears a little and then checks her hands. "CAN ANYONE ELSE HEAR A RINGING NOISE?"
She waits for the feeling to return to her mouth. "MAYBE THIS IS ONE OF THOSE DRINKS THAT GETS BETTER THE MORE YOU TRY IT?" Kaida gives it a few more moments.
"OK. I THINK I'M READY. I'LL TAKE A SECOND ONE THANKS RUSTY. BUT MAKE IT ONLY HALF A MUG THIS TIME PLEASE"

Aydi does not really cope, per se. He is definitely seeing things!
Nora does what she can to help her suffering comrades, but it only helps some, not all. Other remedies -- milk, cool water -- are attempted without success.
Aymar does not really see what the problem is! Sure, the drink had a kick, and a pleasant lingering warmth, but his friends seem put out.
Kaida is (loudly) willing to try again, but the wizard refuses. “The miscability issues present too great a risk!” he exclaims, as he scribbles his notes.
The proprietor sees you to the door with a promise of a free round of drinks, when you are in a state to appreciate it!

At first it seems that the heroes will just let Aydi rest indefinitely. But Kaida inspires Hamlin to try the water-in-the-face method, which does the trick, and rouses the half-elf!
With Aydi awake, the group follows Hamlin’s and Aymar’s lead and heads over to do the rat quest.
The Oldfoot Transit Authority runs two warehouses in the wharf district. You head to the office, a small building between offices are in a smaller building between the two warehouses.
A youngish red-haired halfling answers your knock, takes in your gear and diversity, and asks how he can be of service.

After feeling the water hit his face, Aydi begins to stir awake. "Um where am I. Last I remember is drinking that spicy drink and my eyes went wide." He notices Frit is carrying him "Oh, Frit you can put me down. Also later I need to figure out something I had a weird dream that seem more like a memory."
"Oh we are at the place that was asking for help to get rid of rats. This might help me get my mind off things."
Aydi walks in and hears Nadia allready introduce all of us and why we are there so he just leans down and rubs Yuki's head.

As the party arrives, Aydi, recovering from the Red Gnomish, takes it all in. His time out of consciousness has, it seems, triggered a memory.
Frit is glad to see Aydi made whole.
Nadia gets right to the point, telling the halfling that the party is here to fight rats.
Aymar, Nora, and Hamlin back Nadia up as she describes the party’s reason for being here, projecting confidence and mentioning past victories.
Kaida is reluctant to hurt animals just trying to survive ... but she’ll put her team above her reservations.
Aydi talks to Kaida about humane traps, not realizing yet that she is deaf.
The halfling grins. “Bold, you are. That’s fine. Sure, come on down to the cellars, and you can see the situation.”
As you trudge down stairs into a large basement lit with oil lamps and filled with barrels and crates, the halfling adds, “I’m Fosco Oldfoot. What’s your party name, so’s I can tell my da?”
Once downstairs, you can see the myriad rat droppings and holes the rats use to go in and out. The entrances are a foot to a foot and a half in diameter. A tiny creature can enter freely. A small creature can squeeze in. Medium types are going to have problems -- escape-artist-checks-and-crawling-on-your-belly type problems.
“The real trick is getting at them!” says Fosco. “You got any way to lure them out?”

The party discusses how to control or eliminate the large rats. They look to be about the size of small dogs. Spiders and smoke are mentioned.
Aydi wants to craft a trap. Do you have parts pre-fabricatyed for assembly? If not, it takes a while to craft a trap. Also, what kind of trap are you trying to make? Please refer to the trap rules. They will tell you the DC and costs.
Other actions may well work too. But you have to post that you are trying them before they can work ... or not!

The earth elemental finds a rat and attacks. Kaida, please make your roll against AC14. These are standard Dire Rats.
The rats start to pur out of the holes you have not blocked, but your work has funneled them toward you.
Stone, Aydi, and Nora, you iused the ready action, so you can make attacks as rats emerge. Aydi, you can attack vs AC11, against a flat-footed rat.
The rats attack! It’s a simplification of a chaotic situation, but to save your DM’s sanity, we’ll say four attack each of you.
If you kill a rat with a readied attack, the first rat attack (below) is negated.
Nadia (AC19) 3 rats - 3 misses Stone (AC20) 1 rat - 1 miss Aydi (AC19) 4 rats - 3 hit for 8, or two hit for 4 if the readied attack inflicts 5 hp or more. Stone attempts to bite one of the rats as it comes out, but misses. The next round Stone manages to hit all three times on a rat, and Nadia swings her battleaxe around without any care, hitting nothing as she swings. " Come on Stone, bite harder! We got these rats to kill now!" She cheers her companion on.
Stone gets a 11 for the first attack, a 18 for 4 damage, a 23 with a claw for 4 damage, another 18 for 4 more damage. Nadia misses with a 5 to hit
Kaida’s elemental has so far taken out two, and Kaida (AC13, diseased) knocks the other two on her unconscious with her color spray! Zero rats left.
Last round, Aydi killed a rat with his readied action, and then was bit twice for 4 damage. He missed a fort save and is diseased. This round, Aydi (AC19, diseased) kills another. The remaining two attack, flanking, and is bit again for 1 hp damage. Two rats left.
Frit (AC16, diseased) is bit and then lets loose with a devastating response, landing two out of three kicks! Two enemy rats go down! The remaining two flank and snarl, They snap at Frit, and one hits for 2 hp damage. Two rats left.
Hamlin (AC13, maybe diseased?) tries to cast his vomit swarm spell. But there are four rats fighting him! Usually, if you want to cast in melee range of a foe, you need to make a concentration check to cast on the defensive. But there’s a risk you will lose your spell. Alternatively, you can just tank the enemy attacks of opportunity (AoOs) and hope not to get hit. Since Hamlin did not make a defensive casting roll, the four rats get AoOs. Of the four AoOs (not flanking), two land, inflicting 5 hp damage. So I need Hamlin to make a DC16 Concentration check or the spell fails. If it works, then the spell blocks retreating rats. WHEW! THEN ... the four rats flank Hamlin and attack again! Luckily, all four of those miss! NOTE: Hamlin, please make three DC11 fort saves vs disease. Four rats left.
Aymar (AC20, maybe diseased?) kills one, and the other three attack, two flanking. One bites hard -- but just nicks Aymar for 1 hp damage. It breaks skin, so please make a fort save. Three rats left.
Nora (AC18) Wounds one, and then is beset by four. She Inspires Courage in her friends (+1 to hit and damage). But that does not stop the four from surrounding her and attacking, flanking. Two hit for 8 damage! And I need two more Fort saves. Four rats left, one wounded.
Nadia (AC19), you did not add in the effect of the Inspire Courage. Your DM is kind and adds it in. Your Stone takes down three! That’s all there are on you, and you are safe for now. Zero rats.

Nadia and Stone step away from their hole, and go to help the others. Outside of Nadia maybe getting a flank on one, which would give her a hit with the 12+2, her and Stone manage to do nothing but help the others out. If Nadia did hit she got a 7 damage on one rat, hopefully helping out a friend

She reaches to reload her crossbow, but the rats jumping around her make it clear they'd bite her loading hand. She lets go one hand of the crossbow, and pulls out her clan dagger. She locates the rat she hit earlier, and tries to finish it.

Kaida can't control the earth elemental, so with no other enemies directly threatening her it lumbers to the next closest rat and attacks.
For her part Kaida tries to lob a ball of acid at one of the rats but her aim isn't very good.

Kaida charges across the room and launches into a flying tackle on one of the rats. For someone of her stature she lands a lucky grab!
The earth elemental casually plods along behind her and steps on the rat.

Seeing the Kaida has the rats attacking Nora well in hand (literally), he darts over to Hamlin, to clear off the rats attacking him.
He kicks out at the one that just bit Hamlin hard and then goes to stomp on the other, but misses. So he draws on his internal power to strike again.

Aydi seeing all of the rats around him are taken care. He will go over to were Aymar is pulling out the +1 dagger as well to where he is flanking with Aymar and attack with his shortsword. While Aydi attacks one rat he will have Yuki attack the other one while flanking with Aymar and faceplant.

Kaida's elemental disappears back to where it came from. She releases the dead rat from her grasp and hastily casts a Prestidigitation spell to clean the blood from her hands.
"THERE ARE STILL A FEW UNCONSCIOUS ONES" she says referencing the ones she knocked out with the color spray spell "CAN SOMEONE DEAL WITH THEM PLEASE? I CAN'T DO IT". She's killed enough animals for today and doesn't want to kill one that's sleeping. Kaida will turn her back to them to avoid seeing what happens next. She knows it has to be done.

Aydi and Nora consider the effect of the rats’ bites. Aydi thinks that if anyone is infected, they will have a fev er in a day or three. Nora offers divine curing. But that may not be enough to fend off disease. A more experienced cleric may be needed.
Nadia has no regrets. These rats could have done a lot of damage to innocents!
Hamlin, Frit, and Kaida are thinking about cleaning up!
Yuki finishes off any rats not quite dead yet.
Aymar leads the group to the halfling who hired you all. Fosco seems kind of shocked when he sees all the carnage. He gives you each six gold pieces in thanks, and also gives you a note to give to the same priest of Wardd you met at The Ear.
