The Scepter


Drall and the Scepter (DM MikeK)  2d6=12 ;

Stepping through the portal, the Shields find themselves on a floating hunk of rock, 250’ in diameter, surrounded by the mists of Koshe Marr. The sky above is dark and cloudy. An epic storm fills the space - lightning pierces the gloom, thunder booms mightily, winds are high, and rain comes like waves - increasing and decreasing suddenly and with great intensity.

The rock they stand upon is shaped like a shallow cone, rising some 40’ from edge to center.
At the apex of this cone is a statue of a hooded humanoid figure with both arms extended before it, palms up, as if presenting a gift.
Resting in the hands of the statue is the Scepter.

25’ away stands a 6’ tall wooden post inscribed with some kind of markings.

Standing in a group in front of the statue are four trolls.

Drall stands directly between the Shields and the statue.
The half troll wears mithril full plate cut out in the back so that a pair of large bat wings open behind him.
Both his skin and his eyes are reddish.
He carries no weapon, but the palms and fingers of his gauntlets are studded with wickedly serrated spikes.

To each side of Drall stands a troll fighter in hide armor and wearing metal spikes fit over their claws. (TF1 and TF2)

On the far right is a fourth troll, also in hide armor but with no visible weapons. (TA)

Grantham roars a challenge over the wind and rain.

Armalad casts Repulsion choosing to make the emanation 60/130 feet maximum centered on her and extends out to AA/AB 36 to Y/AD 37 to X/AE 38 to W/AF 39 to V/AG 40 to U/AH 41, T/AI 42, S/AJ 43,
R/AK 44, Q/AL 45, P/AM 46, O/AN 47, N/AO 48, M/AP 49 and behind. Any creature within or entering the field must attempt a DC 24 save. If it fails, it becomes unable to move toward Armalad for the duration of the spell (13 rounds)

Armalad calls out to Drall, "DRALL! GARGUL SENT US TO COLLECT BOTH YOU AND THE SCEPTER SURRENDER IT AND YOU NOW"

Stohp winces. That is the worst possible way to start this conversation, there's no way the troll will 'surrender' anything. Given the noise and things yelling at each other may or may not get the message through so Stohp will throw her weapons to the side and hold up her hands in an overt show of peace. She calls out, "WE ARE NOT ENEMIES, BUT REINFORCEMENTS, COMMANDED BY THE GOD OF THE DEAD TO ASSIST IN THE DEFENSE OF THE SCEPTER."

Even Stock winces at Armalad’s rather direct entrance. He nods to Stohphoping to direct Drall’s attention to her velvet words.

Despite the diplomatic approach, Stock grabs a potion and drinks.

"Hey, we just want to talk - we have a god wantingthat sceptre and I don't think any one of us want to be on HIS bad side. We only want to ensure Gargul is kept happy." Bartomus added.

Zanderallen takes in the situation quickly, picking up Drall's warning over the roar of the storm. His hope of a peaceful resolution quickly fades but that wouldn't stop him from trying. He does take the opportunity to summon Domi's spirit into his blade, preparing his weapon to take down Drall non-lethally. He yells back to Drall, "YOU KNOW WE CAN'T DO THAT DRALL. GARGUL SENT US TO BRING YOU BACK. WE'D RATHER YOU COME PEACEFULLY."

He then talks to his companions, "Remember, Gargul wants him alive"

Armalad casts a spell and calls for the trolls to surrender.

Stohp counters by throwing her weapons to the side and ing up her hands in an overt show of peace. She calls out that they are here as reinforcements.

Stock drinks a potion.
Looking for noteworthy items, Drall is obviously part fiend.
The other three appear to be trolls, though its a good bet they've class levels.

Delia gives up understanding whether the Shields are attacking or parlaying.
She casts a spell on Hawky.

Bartomus casts a spell and points out the Shields are working for a god.

Zanderallen summons Domi's spirit into his blade and calls out their mission while asking for a peaceful resolution.

Drall makes a show of scratching the top of his head as the inconsistent statements are called out.
"Hokay!" he calls back. "We surrender! You drop your weapons and come up here and we will go with you!"

Armalad says to Zanderallen, "What do you think about Hold Monster or Baleful Polymorph on Drall? Either way he isn't dead and is essentially a non-entity this battle."

She then casts mirror image on Joker while waiting for Zanderallen's preference for how she deals with Drall.

"We shouldn't be having a battle at all!" Stohp hisses furiously. "Look we know he's here, lets do what he demands, retreat through the portal, then send one or two of us to negotiate. As things stand now this can only end in violence, and these people are doing good by guarding a powerful, dangerous artifact. Doing as he demands and leaving will be a show of good faith and will put us in a much stronger position to convince him of our good faith. This place doesn't look like there's anywhere to go, we guard the outside of the portal and have as long as needed to convince him."

Zanderallen notes the fiendish character of Drall and remembers Gargul's words. He reminds the rest of the Shields, "Drall may once have served good, but he has been reborn and corrupted by the power of Koshe Marr, he does not recognize Gargul anymore. Negotiating with a fiend will get us nowhere. Armalad, if he doesn't surrender immediately, polymorph him."

He then marches forward not quite passing the post. He yells out, "Drall, last chance. Stand down NOW."

Zanderallen points out Drall has been lost to Koshe Marr.
He offers one last chance, while giving Armalad the nod should Drall refuse.
The paladin moves forward.

Stock looks at the other Shields and says, “Ok, next time we take a minute to get on the same page before jumping in…
…and if you need ME to point that out, you know it has to be true."
The dwarf prepares a potion and moves in line with Zanderallen.

Delia frowns, and tells the rest of the Shields Drall is lying.
She drinks a potion while moving away from the bunched group.

This changes the range of her emanation of repulsion

She readies an action to cast Baleful Polymorph on Drall at the first sign of hostility coming from the fiendish troll

Bartomus had a thought and then got wrapped up in it. He had wanted to ask if they really wanted to piss off a god...he didn't think anyone would want to do that. But, apparently, these guys did.

He quickly calculated where Stock and Zander had moved to in his moment of thought. FRIG, he thought.

Then his fingers moved as quickly as his mouth.

"Burn."

Sorry - thought I had sent the post I did early this morning on my phone.
Sense Motive for 27Firestorm 18 pairs of 10 ft cubes. So, I am throwing this to where its edge is at ROW 35, so 40 ft ahead of Z/S position

Spell Resistance roll -
SPENDING A HERO POINT IN ADVANCE - however, Woldian Wiki is down. So, adding 10 to the roll, as I think that is the house rule - 2+18= 20 +10 for 30 if that 10 is the house rule

Reflex save against 22 (10+7 spell level+5 wisdom mod w/ headband) to only take half.
18d6 - 69 damage or 34 if reflex save is made.

If any fail reflex save - they take 4d6 of fire damage each round until flames are extinguished - full round action and a DC 20 reflex save.

Stohp is rather exasperated that no one is even trying for the peaceful option, but that ship is quickly sailing. She'll move up with Armalad and prepare an action to grapple the enemy if they move to attack her in melee (41 to grapple)

Zanderallen grimaces at how out of sync they are. But Drall was pushing them onto this path, and with him being a servant of Koshe Marr he was pretty sure they was never going to be any other options. He yells back to the Shields, "DO NOT LOOK AT THIS SIGN" Then with a quick prayer he touches Stock.

He then continues his march forward, calling to Drall and the other trolls, "Then I pronounce judgement upon you Drall. As a servant of Domi, acting as an agent of Gargul, we will subdue you and bring you back to Gargul for judgement. The rest of you, get lost now or face the consequences of standing with the damned."

Zanderallen instructs the Shields not to look at the sign on the post.
He casts a spell on Stock and moves forward.

Delia moves up, with Hawky circling above her.
She catches TA's eye, readies her bow, and shakes her head.

There is the sound of a spell being cast.
A lightning bolt strikes Zanderallen and then arcs to Armalad, Stock, and Stohp.
A fifth troll appears to the left of the others.

Zanderallen takes 34 hp damage Ref DC 20 halves
Armalad, Stock, Stohp take 34 hp damage Ref DC 18 halves

At this, Bartomus looses his spell.
All five trolls are enveloped in a firestorm.
Drall appears unaffected (SR29)
The two fighters take some damage but appear to also have some level of fire resistance.

TA is caught and catches fire.

TA looks back at Delia and casts a spell.
The ranger's bow hums. Her arrow hits home.
The spell fizzles.

Drall and the two troll fighters move in on Zanderallen.

Armalad casts her readied spell, but is unable to overcome Drall's resistance.
Using 25 roll for Repulsion as well

TF1 stops. It tries again, but cannot close.

Drall marches up and bites down on Zanderallen.
His teeth sink into the paladin.
Zanderallen takes 20 hp damage

And then the storm itself gets involved.
A wind gust blasts across the surface, moving from east to west.
Acts like Gust of Wind.
Hawky –4 penalty on Fly skill checks.
Everyone –4 penalty on ranged attacks and Perception checks

Armalad gracefully avoids any of the damage from the lightning thanks to evasion. (Reflex: 23)

Armalad then tries to cast Hold Monster against Drall only to fail against his Spell resistance (18 vs SR)

She says to Zanderallen, "I'm out of the 2 spells I thought we could use to trap Drall without killing him, I technically have a third option that doesn't allow for Spell Resistance but we need to reduce his forces first."

Bartomus moved up behind Armalad. He worked his fingers and called forth another spell. He knew he would have to wait to deploy it, but it was ready and available.

Zanderallen shrugs off the effect of the repulsion and catches the brunt of the lightning blast on his shield. He roars in pain as the tingling from the lightning intensifies the pain of Drall's teeth.

Face to face with the troll Zander's eye's flash with recognition. How had he missed it?! "DRALL! YOU'RE THE ONE WHO TOOK PEPPER!! YOU ANSWER TO GARGUL NOW!!" Planting his feet against the wind he SMITES Drall, the enchantments on his blade turning it into blunt object. His flurry of attacks rains down hard upon his opponent, heroically trying to find every opening.

Armalad avoids the lightning.
She tries another spell, but is stymied by Drall's spell resistance.
She has one option left.

Capture without killing is kind of Stohp's specialty.
She also avoids the lightning bolt and moves in behind Zanderallen.
She tries to grab Drall, but the fiendish troll shrugs off her attempt.

Bart attempts to move up behind Armalad
Bart still needs the Will Save DC24 vs Armalad's Repulsion spell to be able to do that.
The taur casts a spell, planning to help reduce some forces.

Zanderallen recognizes Drall.
With a roar, the paladin is on the foe.
His blade slams into Drall repeatedly.
As he strikes, he feels the power of Drall's Unholy Aura echoing his blows back upon him.
Zanderallen make three Fort saves vs DC 19 (one for each melee hit). Each failure results in loss of 1d6 Strength.

Delia also hears "reduce his forces first" and is ready to help.
While Hawky flies to the flank, the ranger fires arrows through the gusting wind.

The troll's wounds heal a little.

Gauging the limits of the repulsion, TF1 turns to his left and circles.
Realizing the effect is circular, his eyes fix on Delia.

TF2 steps up and strikes Stohp with a barbed claw.
Stohp takes 22 hp damage.

TA has issues.
His priority appears to be he's on fire.
The troll flails about and manages to extinguish himself.
His arrow wounds heal a smidge.

TW casts a spell.
Armalad feels a compulsion coming over her.
Armalad Will Save DC 20 or suffer from a continuous confusion effect.

He aimed at TW

He aimed a sunbeam (1/6) at the troll off to his left that had been pelted with hailstones (TW).

Then he called down another spell and let fly against the troll far to his right.

TW - Sunbeam, however, not sure if SR applies - rolled a nat 20 for a total of 38 if it does; Reflex save needed by TW against 22. If successful, not blinded - also reflex save reduces damage of 71 to 35.

My target for Flame Strike is TA - but I am uncertain as to whether I have line of sight. If not, then I would choose TF1.

Spell Resistance roll of 26. If that passes, reflex save against 22 is needed. 53 damage a successful reflex save reduces that in half. Half is fire and the other is divine damage - that half is not resistant to fire.

(My header says I'm at 21 hp, I don't think I healed myself after the bridge fight when we rested. I'm going to put myself down 22 from max, but if I'm misremembering and we didn't rest or somehow missing a bunch of damage from this fight then disregard my posted action Stohp is unconscious)

Well Drall has taken a lot of damage so Stohp will switch targets to TF2. After an internal debate about what class he is (might be demoman if he's missing an eye, or more likely heavy) she goes for the grapple to prevent him from eating his Sandvich. He's in reach so she can make 2 grapples, if the first succeeds she'll use the 2nd to pin.

Zander easily shrugs off the woozy blowback of the troll's unholy aura. His wonder about what happened to Drall since last they met is quickly spent aside by the burning pain of infernally fueled claws and teeth. Gritting his teeth he continues his dance with the big troll, trading heavily.

Delia spares a glance to the troll advancing on her only because he gets in her way. She then proceeds to send arrows whistling by him to stay on target. Seeing that the troll put itself out, she pulls out different arrows, flame wreathing around the arrow as her bow imbues them with frost.

Bart overcomes Armalad's Repulsion spell and moves up behind the arcane archer.
The druid thinks of sending a sunbeam at TW, but several issues prevent that
TW is out of range of spell (60'). Also, evoking the beams requires a standard action. So, can't send a beam and cast another spell unless you find a way to perform two standard actions - such as using a hero point.

Bart does call down a Flame Strike on TA.
TA has spell resistance, but Bart overcomes it.
The pillar slams into the troll.

Armalad steps up and casts a spell that should keep TW entertained next round.

Stohp tries grappling F2, but finds he's even harder to get a hold of than Drall. The troll bats aside her attempts.

Zanderallen batters Drall with more blows.
The fiendish troll collapses, unconscious.

Delia lets arrows fly, while Hawky swoops past TF1.
The bird misses its attack.
Delia drops TA and sends one arrow into F1.

Zander barely has time to notice Drall is down before his attention is fully taken up dodging infernal fire. He coughs from the singeing. Taking a slight step to his right he calls forth more of Domi's power against the troll taking a bite out of his dwarven friend. Without needing to take anyone but Drall alive he suppresses the Merciful enhancement on his blade, one less troll fiend in the world was a good thing in his book.

A gargantuan glowing T-Rex appears in front of a very startled TW.
With a quick snap, the creature bends down and clamps her in its jaws.

Armalad casts a spell and becomes invisible.

Stohp dodges the flame strike and keeps trying. She'll get him eventually!

Delia steps back and lets arrows fly.
But the wind and the troll's thick armor combine to stymie her attempts.

Zanderallen slashes TF2 with deep cuts.

Bartomus lets loose one of his sunbeams at TF1.
The troll saves and doesn't take much damage.
However, the troll is not undead and the damage is much less than Bart hoped for.
18d6 would be against undead creatures. In this case, damage is 4d6

Stock batters TF2.

Bartomus shook off the thunder, but the ringing in his ears made his head hurt and he winced as he continued to run to the statute. He made sure he was looking at the statute and the carving as he made his way to it.

Fortitude save of 28 against 20 - passed
Runs to Z/AA 28 - five feet away from statute.
Perception 23 looking for any lever or item that may be being used for the thunder. Or, that we may need to take back with us.

Troll natural attacks are considered evil and overcome Trex DR

Armalad takes a step and fires a set of arrows at TF1.
The first one hits, generating an antimagic field around the troll.
All of other arrows hit (FF 15)

The TRex moves away.

Stock steps forward and slams TF1.
Because it is in an antimagic field, it is easier to hit.
However none of the magical or spell like enhancements on Stock or his weapon can be applied to the damage.
The DM is not going to attempt to recalculate that.
TF1 falls unconscious.

Delia gives herself some healing, while Hawky keeps TA down.

All the trolls' wounds heal a little bit.

A light rainfall resumes, but otherwise the storm seems to 'pull back'.

Bartomus saw the scepter in the hands of the statue. He looked back at Zander and the other Shields.

"Alright, you all want me to grab this and then we grab Drall and head through the portal?" He asked as he scanned the scepter and the statue from his close proximity. "Or, do we chant something to be taken to Gargul directly?"

He really couldn't remember that aspect of their assignment.

Bartomus had moved within five feet of the statue - Z/AA 28 - last round. Perception - statue and sceptre

Armalad uses a double move to fly over to the statue and up to the sceptre and if she can take a second round's action she checks the sceptre and statue for traps (Perception: 44);

If there are traps and she can spend a 3rd round's action she attempts to disable them (Disable Device: 49) otherwise if there are no traps and she can spend a 3rd round's action she plucks the sceptre from the statue and then moves 60 feet back towards the group.

If she can take a 4th round's action she either plucks the sceptre and flies back toward the group if she disabled traps last round or she continues her way back to the group

If she isn't back with the group after 4 rounds she takes a 5th round to the rest of the way to the group

She says to the group "I have the sceptre someone grab Drall and can't we just use the item Gargul gave us to return to himl? Do we have any business left here otherwise?"

The T-Rex would have done 4 or 5 rounds worth of damage to the swallowed troll

Under Delia's direction, Hawky will continue beating down TA.

As Armalad passes her, she calls out, "Thanks for whatever that Repulsor spell was. If that troll had had a little more time with me, it would not have ended well."

She will move towards the entrance portal and then wait for the Shields to be ready, concerned that a troll may get back up before they are ready to leave.
"We have multiple days to get out of Koshe Marr. How are we keeping Drall unconscious? Can we do that magically?"

Zander considers options for putting the trolls down for good. "Bart you have any more flame strikes? Might be the best way to stop these other from following us or trying to rescue Drall." He takes note that Armalad is checking out the scepter and keeps an eye on her, handling artifacts was always dangerous. He helps Stohp manhandle Drall to get him secured, testing his weight to assess transport options.

Armalad sees no traps.

Bartomus tries to recall next steps, and Stohp reminds him the group has to get out of Koshe Marr before Gargul can intervene.

Stohp and Zanderallen tie up Drall.

Zanderallen asks about flaming the other trolls.

The portal is flashing.
Within it, several humanoid forms appear to be getting closer, as if walking through a tunnel.
All of you experienced the same effect when you entered the portal - the feeling of moving through to the other side. You recall that experience lasted a few seconds.
Thus, whatever is coming will arrive next round.

Armalad calls back to Joker, "Get away from the portal now!"

Armalad uses a move action to pluck the sceptre from the statue and then starts casting Summon Monster VI this time opting for a Celestial Triceratops to join her Celestial T-Rex on the Field of Battle

The T-Rex continues to chomp on TA (2d8 + 11) = 22 + 18 smite evil

The Celestial Tryke will appear X-Y-Z-31, X-Y-Z-32, X-Y-Z-33 next round on Armalad's turn

"Alright, apparently you are grabbing the sceptre," Bartomus said with a combined shrug and roll of the eyes. He turned and followed after Armalad. He stopped near Drahl and changed into a huge earth elemental.

"I can help with that too." He said with a voice that sounded like rocks grinding against each other.

Then he looked up. "FRIG!"

Delia releases the tension on her arrow and runs towards Zander at his call. She skids to a stop and turns, drawing back the same arrow again. She prepares to release but remains hopeful that maybe these are friendly creatures and not minions of Karkasan come to kill them and steal the Scepter to raise their evil god and doom the world.

"Hawky can keep someone down, but uh, how many trolls can that dino eat?"
