Devastation, an unwelcome visitor, and tussle for the Ring
DM Kent Monday July 17th, 2000 11:35:48 AM
As those in town collect bodies or shun them as the tongue tells you, you come across nothing alive in the town. Only about a quarter of the bodies seem to have died from wounds.
Those still at the ceremony grounds finish body collecting and are sitting around waiting for the others to return.
At the appointed time the townies head back to the sentinel field with their first round of bodies.
Bill Troublefinder Monday July 17th, 2000 6:13:15 PM
After helping to bring several bodies into the Ceremonial Grounds, Bill sits down on the platform. He sees the bodies laid near the Sentinel Statue of his cousin, Borbo Pastna, of Galahad and Brother Branze Bones. Bill looks up at his friends, and in a small voice says, "I just hope that some of the people fled the town before all this ... happened." With welling tears, the halfling looks at Sedar, and asks, "Why did this happen?" He puts his face in his hands, and begins to sob.
Draax Monday July 17th, 2000 8:27:42 PM
Draax has no answer to Bill's question. He just keeps himself walking around the head with he sword ready. He does not looks at the collection of bodies and does not speak to anyone know that if he did he would probably begin to cry along with Bill.
Sedar of the dimmed Spirit Monday July 17th, 2000 8:27:43 PM
Demoralized by the dark scences that he walks through, the Mage makes his way back to the Sentinel field. "its everwhere in town, death everywhere. "
K'isst Tuesday July 18th, 2000 1:16:04 AM
Awakening as if from a dream K'isst decides it's time to act. "There's nothing we can do here. We must get people to do the ceremony, right? So we should go to the next town. Bree, or Closefuddle perhaps."
Rond Tuesday July 18th, 2000 9:37:35 AM
"Do we actually have time to goto the other villages? Do we remember enough of the ceremony, to it oursleves? how many peole do we need to complete it?
Arien Tuesday July 18th, 2000 3:37:21 PM
Since he does not know the ceremony Arien keeps quiet and listens to the discussion, while keeping his gaze off of the bodies.
Arrisa Tuesday July 18th, 2000 6:20:21 PM
Arrisa too doesn't know the ceremony. She simply stays quiet and watches for any movements other than the groups...
DM Kent Tuesday July 18th, 2000 6:20:22 PM
As the party decides what they are going to do and wander around the sentinel fields, they hear the sound of whistling coming from the path that comes from town. Those that were in town though could swear there was nothing alive let alone whistling in that ghost of a town.
Bill Troublefinder Tuesday July 18th, 2000 7:29:07 PM
Bill, after a few minutes, dries his eyes. "Look, let's hide the Head. There are a few buildings still standing. And I will stay with it. I need to rejuvenate for four hours. Yes, K'isst, go with our friends to the next town. I'll stay with the Head." He looks pretty shaky.
Then, when the whistling is heard, he looks up, cocks his ear. "Eh?" Bill hops down from his perch. Worry spreads over his face.
He goes to the Head, and climbs as he is able. "Oh, Sentinel, oh Sentinel, what are we to do? What are we to do? Oh good gods of Wold, what are we to do? Give us wisdom. Help us!"
Bill rests his head atop the Head, and as he asks for wisdom to come, hope replaces the worry on his face. He cracks open one of his eyes to see who or what may be coming down the path.
Sedar Tuesday July 18th, 2000 7:29:08 PM
"I think we should not waste much more time ... we should be able to finish the ceremony." the turns distracted by the whistling. How could we have missed someone he murmurs.
K'isst Tuesday July 18th, 2000 9:07:49 PM
"We are not a village. It would drain our lives away and still not be enough. It takes a village as they say. What?" K'isst stops her speculating as the whistling is heard. Her hair stands on end at the gall and moxie it would take to whistle in a locale like this. Without thinking she draws her trident and begins to sniff out the traveller.
Draax Tuesday July 18th, 2000 9:40:45 PM
Draax continues walking around the head with his sword ready as if he was guarding it until he hears the whistling. Draax tries to locate the direction of the sound and will begin to moves slowly in that direction, scanning for any movement as he goes.
Rond Wednesday July 19th, 2000 12:08:53 AM
"Yea, but, it only takes one to make a stand..." as he stops and hears the whistling.
Ahkum Wednesday July 19th, 2000 1:33:14 PM
Ahkum grabs the shield like holy symbol about his neck bearing three distinct symbols and looks to the path with a grim look on his smooth pale face. He takes a few steps towards the path and speaks in a loud commanding voice, "Who goes there?"
Arien d20=15 d20=4 Wednesday July 19th, 2000 2:53:59 PM
When he hears the noise Arien scales the nearest large object, be it a rock or tree, that affords some cover and looks for the source of the whistling. (dex check, then perception check, made both)
DM Kent Wednesday July 19th, 2000 6:49:48 PM
Not trying to hide himself at all, the whistling individual crosses the bridge to the sentinel fields and is heading toward the ceremony ampitheatre, where the head and you are currently holed up.
Those of the party who are trying to see who is approaching, see a very tall, gaunt, human with grayish skin. He is wearing black-robes with a blood-red sash. He is carrying a black, crooked staff and is walking with a spry, bouncing step.
Bill Troublefinder Wednesday July 19th, 2000 8:27:17 PM
Bill, still lying on the head, shifts just enough to pulls out two of his normal darts, and two of the new darts taken from under Atomos' pedestal. New one in his right, and normal in his left, the pair remaining lie under him, ready to reach. He closes his eye for a moment, then again just barely opens it, watching the gray walker. Black, red, gray? He looks to see the color of hair.
Draax Wednesday July 19th, 2000 8:31:32 PM
Seeing a living person after all the death, Draax is very excited. He does not know why the man is walking among the dead with such a bounce in his step, but he thinks that maybe the man could be affected mentally by whatever happened here. Draax slowly approaches the man with his sword pointed to the ground. "Excuse me sir, are you alright and is there anyone else still alive?"
Sedar Wednesday July 19th, 2000 8:31:33 PM
Surprised at the appearance of the old man. The mage simply waits, allowing the old fellow to approach.
Ahkum Wednesday July 19th, 2000 11:13:51 PM
The priest raises an eyebrow at the bouncing grey skinned man and rests his quarterstaff before him in the sand of the sentinel beach. He looks the man up and down and speaks openly, "Hail,... Alemi hath shown you a gentle hand this day. The village hath suffered a plague and we were wrought with sorrow until we looked upon your visage of life. That reminds me stranger. Speak your name and your buisness here in this once peaceful place. Our day hath been long and I fear the appearance of new developments myself."
Rond Thursday July 20th, 2000 2:48:10 AM
Rond stops all activity and watches intently as the stranger approaches.
Arien Thursday July 20th, 2000 5:10:53 AM
Hiding his movements as best he can, and staying up on his perch, Arien draws an arrow and makes it ready. He moves slowly so as to not attract attention.
DM Kent Thursday July 20th, 2000 4:08:10 PM
Looking at Draxx and Ahkum as they address him as he approaches, the man smiles and walks right by them. He is by far one of the tallest men you have ever seen. Up close his skin color is almost ashen and Ahkum is not sure but as the man passed by, was that a whiff of carrion? The only other thing a bit unusual about the man are his 4 inch long pitch-black fingernails.
As he approaches the head he looks up at it, smiles and slowly turns back to face the visible party members, slowly looking over each member as if searching for something. "So Ahkum Ellison and Andraaxius Slowblade, you want answers do you? What do you think gives you the right to ask the questions that you want? Let alone deal with the answers to them.
"As for seeing anyone else left alive, No. There are none from Windhorn still left alive. Or so I thought. I don't understand how you all managed to survive when the others did not."
As his eyes come to rest upon Arissa and move down to her hand, a smile plays upon his face and he looks back up at the others. "So what do you all here and where ever did you find the sentinel head?"
K'isst d20=5 Thursday July 20th, 2000 5:46:57 PM
"You first. Who are you and how are you still alive?" K'isst's acute nose smells the carrion aspect easily (perception check of 5.) Her hands are gripped tightly on her trident and she has it in an offensive position. She glances quickly at Bill apprehensively and then at each party member in turn to see how they are reacting to him.
Bill Troublefinder d20=12 d20=19 d20=20 d20=3 d20=2 d3=3 d3=3 d3=3 d3=2 Thursday July 20th, 2000 6:24:37 PM
Bill observes the newcomer, and notes his interest in Arrisa and the ring she wears. Bill switches the darts, so that he holds a new one in each hand. He stands upon the Sentinel.
"Gather round the Sentinel, friends," Bill pipes up. "Let us make sure that our guest is appropriately met." He adds, soto voce, "Arrisa, come by here."
Then he addresses the tall man. "You are most unwelcome in this place. Who are you -- Gargul's Emissary? You mock at the deaths of our friends and neighbors. Our right to ask? You are the trespasser here, not we. And you initiated rudeness. Our right to ask? We love our town.
"You may not touch what we have. You must leave now. We will resist your will, and do despise your ways. Covet not.
"Go. Now."
If he sees the ashen one so much as flinch, Bill will launch his darts (4), called shots all, aiming for his right eye, and if successful, next for his staff hand. He resists attempts at mental probing. [Will email DM w/attack adjustments - don't have sheet here.]
Sedar Thursday July 20th, 2000 6:24:38 PM
"well spoken Bill T" reaching in to his sachel to draw forth the dragon headed dagger that Atomos gifted to the party. Then takes up a combat stance, awaiting the tall ones next move.
Rond Thursday July 20th, 2000 9:47:39 PM
Rond stands quietly waiting, soaking up the information that is given. If looked upon, Rond can be seen to be on edge, a look of severe suspicion and concentration.
Draax d20=4 Thursday July 20th, 2000 10:31:40 PM
Draax is stunned by the fact that this stranger knows his true name. As he listens to Bill he comes to understand what the man represents. He moves closer to the sentinel staying well out of reach of the stranger while holding his sword ready.
Ahkum Friday July 21st, 2000 8:39:24 AM
The priest scowls at the man as he passes and turns striding slowly behind the man coming to a stop several feet behind the man as he addresses those near and on the sentinel head.
Arien Friday July 21st, 2000 3:34:08 PM
Keeping his eye on the large stranger Arien pulls another arrow out of the quiver and lays it next to him, where he can grab it easily.
Arrisa Friday July 21st, 2000 3:51:39 PM
Arrisa spins her quarterstaff and ends with it held firmly in both hands. She moves towards Bill and growls at this newcomer slightly
DM Kent Friday July 21st, 2000 9:21:38 PM
The gray man turns at K'isst's comments. "Who am I? Who am I? I am called Marteus, though I doubt any of you have heard of me by that name. Perhaps you might have heard of me as the Dark Lord." Turning sharply at Bill's comments, he angrily says, "Gargul's emissary indeed. Why Gargul is naught but a washed up has been do gooder." Turning and pointing toward Arissa, he says, "Now I want that ring. And since I am in a good mood I am willing to trade you something that you all dearly want for it. I would think very hard about trying to keep the ring from me I make this offer only once."
Arrisa Saturday July 22nd, 2000 5:11:44 AM
Arrisa looks at the ring on her finger and then looks to this stranger. "The ring can't be that important to you, all it does is let you breathe water..."
Sedar Saturday July 22nd, 2000 5:11:45 AM
"Marteus .... I think not.." as he recalls the name through old stories he has heard, something seems not right. 'hmmm what is that smell'
Draax Sunday July 23rd, 2000 2:26:28 AM
Draax continues to stand ready to attack the stranger, although he does not think that he would stand a change against the unnatural man.
Arien Sunday July 23rd, 2000 3:31:44 AM
Drawing the arrow taunt Arien waits to see what unfolds below him.
Bill Troublefinder d20=7 Sunday July 23rd, 2000 4:40:21 AM
Bill lies down on his stomach on top of the Sentinel. "Arrisa, let me see the ring. You put on Galahad's ring, right? Don't worry, I won't swallow it now, I just want to verify the ring we're talking about." He reaches down his hand, and hopes that she will hold it up for him to take.
Assuming she gives it to him, Bill looks at it closely for a moment. He then asks Marteus, "What did you want to trade for it?"
If Marteus goes for a grab play during the handoff, Bill and the Ring disappear. [See email.]
If not, Bill will appear interested in hearing what the Dark Lord has to say, yet suspicious at the same time. Someone trying to read his face would think he was dealing with inner conflicts.
Ahkum Sunday July 23rd, 2000 8:41:27 AM
The priest continues to eye the 'man' with contempt as the dealings with Bill are going on. He stands leaning on his staff totally confused by the turn of events.
K'isst Sunday July 23rd, 2000 2:09:06 PM
K'isst silently begins to pray to Donyra. "Goddess of the deep. Give me the strength to die for what I believe in. Give me the wisdom to help us make the correct decisions here." She opens her eyes, but is not calmed. She wonders why Bill is on the head, but focuses on The Dark Lord and wonders why he tries to parley it from us. Suddenly she hits upon an idea. "Do not attack him first. I think that's important somehow. Also do not let him have the ring. Resist... Resist..." She stands tall. "Ok, you "dark one" you....what is this so called deal." ::keep him talking K'isst....make him reveal what he wants....evil guys always want to justify their actions.....make him justify his...:: K'isst's thought run rampant.
DM Kent Sunday July 23rd, 2000 10:36:44 PM
Turning towards Arissa and Bill, Marteus smiles and says, It is not what I want to trade for it but what you want to trade for it, young Troublefinder. As your companion, Arissa Fairwind, so succinctly says, it is just a simple ring of little value. A bauble so to speak. But it is unique in its plainness and that intrigues me. I only offer a trade with you to make you feel like you got some value for something I could easily take, should I wish. As for any thoughts, any of you might have, of taking the ring and... hiding it. I believe I am more than capable of following you to where ever you go. And I can assure you that you would not like the consequences of such actions. Now then, I believe you were all just bemoaning the fact that all of your families and friends in this burnt hovel are dead and that you would like then to live again. Well, I can make that happen, after a sense. All you have to do is say the word and give me the ring. So, What say you?
Ahkum Monday July 24th, 2000 1:45:22 PM
The priest narrows his eyes at marteus and then to looks to his comrades, "You must have a dark heart if you have to ask for payment to renew life to hundreds of helpless villagers. If you have the power to renew their lives then you may have very well been the cause of this plague mighty marteus." He looks to Arissa and then the ring with disdain, "Is that the ring that Galahad wore or the ring of the glowing sahuagin that nearly killed bill?"
Arrisa Monday July 24th, 2000 2:39:30 PM
Arrisa holds the ring up for Bill to take, and is slightly releived as he does so. She turns back to this Marteus and simply watches him. He could probably read her mind, so all she thought was: 'And did you get my wilderness family too?'
K'isst Monday July 24th, 2000 8:35:55 PM
K'isst, growls at Marteaus and then gets an idea. She winks at Bill and then says, "Bill, let's head into town and see this devastation again first hand as a group. Then we can talk it over and decide." She turns to Marteaus, "I assume that there's no huge hurry here? I mean they are all dead and you are a great power, right? This ring must be of great importance to you for you to be willing to do such a noble act as raise all these poor folk from the grave. Perhaps there is some good in you, hmm? So. we're walking.....we're walking."
Bill (by Jerry) Monday July 24th, 2000 8:43:17 PM
Bill, seemingly about to do something drops his mouth open as Marteaus speaks for a second, and then doubles his mind defenses. He pauses wondering what K'isst is up to. He nods at K'isst tentatively and looks to see what the others in the party think by looking at their faces.
Draax Monday July 24th, 2000 9:04:48 PM
Draax listens to the others while keeping his eyes on the stranger. The fact that the man says that he can bring the people back to life does not make him happy. He nods to K'isst and looks back at the stranger, says out loud, but as if to himself. " I wonder what he means by 'I can make that happen, after a sense' what does after-a-sense means.
Sedar Monday July 24th, 2000 9:04:49 PM
"If you could just take it. you most likely would of already." pause for a moment before adding "wants holding him back I wonder." reaching into his sachel he fingers the 3 rings he has stored there. Then randomly slips two of them on.'wonder what they can do to help us'
Arien Tuesday July 25th, 2000 1:11:42 AM
One particular part of Marteaus' speech stuck in Arien's mind. The stranger claimed he coud give them life, in a sense. "Perhaps," he thought to himself, "Its not life he will grant them but unlife..." Arien lithely scurries down from his perch and joins his companions. Once out of earshot of the stranger he will tell them his thought.
DM Kent Tuesday July 25th, 2000 7:01:12 AM
Turning to Ahkum and Arissa, Mister Ellison, I have to admit that as sad as it seems, and as much as it seems you would like to think it, I had nothing to do with the Citizens of Windhorn's demise. That was of written long ago in regards to the loss of the Sentinel head. And for your information it is not the first time this has occurred. Perhaps it will be the last, who knows?
Turning back to K'sst and Bill.
As for whether we have a lot of time or not, well I will let you think about that all the Citizens of Windhorn have died within two days due to the loss of protection gained from the Sentinel Statue and the ceremony. You all were obviously not here during that time so perhaps the magic involved will not affect you. However You are Windhorn Hamlett Citizens and it is written that ALL the citizens of the hamlett will perish at the loss of the Sentinel Head. So perhaps we have two days, or prhaps you have much less time since the magic will not have as many life forces to deal with.
At Draxx's mumbled comment he turns and says now there's a bright lad and though, looking at Arien as he has his thoughts, yes I could give them a partial life by just animating them I did say I would return them to life in a sense.
Rond Tuesday July 25th, 2000 11:27:02 AM
Rond maintains his position and his focus, not knowing what else to do for now.
Bill Troublefinder Tuesday July 25th, 2000 11:27:03 AM
When Arrisa gave him the ring, Bill thanked her with his eyes. He holds the ring in his closed right hand.
At K'isst's suggestion, he looks to her and his friends. "How quickly could we gather others from nearby towns?"
And, mentally, and from his spirit, Bill shoots a prayer heavenward to Alemi and Domi, and to the Sisters, asking their active attention and protection. 'Let Marteus hear that,' he thinks defiantly. He is pleased with his friends that they seem inclined to resist.
"I am relieved to hear you are not the one responsible for this ..." and his voice trails off as he looks at the dead upon the Ceremony Grounds.
As Marteus names his friends, he memorizes the names, as some he had not heard in full.
"Within two days of the loss of the Head, or within the last two days?" Bill asks regarding the time when the villagers died. "In what book or scroll were these prophecies written? And what magic or curse is it that caused their deaths? Did it lie here before the placing of the Sentinel Head?"
Bill waits for a moment for Marteus to answer, if he chooses to answer, then says, "We have no interest in having the remains of the members of our community turned into the abomination of the undead. We will miss them, and we will mourn them, and if we can, we will bury them. But we will not ask you to defile them."
Bill stands atop the Head, his left hand covering his right fist over his belly. The feathers of a dart stick up, nestled between thumb and forefinger of his left hand.
He takes a breath, and asks, "I will ask you something, Marteus. And give you time to answer, once our group has done as my friend K'isst has suggested.
"What just and honest claim do you have for this Ring of the Water, other than dark desire? How will you benefit the Wold if this ring you bear? Might there not be hands better suited than yours to wear it? May the righteous gods and the Sentinel then be witness to your answer."
Bill then scrambles down from the Sentinel, and joins his friends to head toward town. "I will be back."
Sedar Tuesday July 25th, 2000 1:51:45 PM
Keeping his weapons in hand , he moves off with his friends. In total aggreement with Bill T, he nods along.
K'isst Tuesday July 25th, 2000 7:21:10 PM
K'isst leads the group back to town where they tour the town to see what caused the destruction. Dragons? Sahuagin? This Marteaus? She leads them down the streets one by one. "This is so we never forget what happened here. Also it is so we can see first hand the importance of our decisions here." As they pass a building on the eastern edge of town she says, "Bill! Did I see something move over there? Quick! Over there by that pile of rubble! Something's moving. Maybe we can save at least one life in this horrible place!!!" K'isst draws her trident just in case and runs toward the movement she thinks she saw. "Come!"
Bill Troublefinder Tuesday July 25th, 2000 7:58:42 PM
Bill runs quickly over to where K'isst sees something. He takes the damp lasso out. He waves everyone else to come along.
Ahkum Tuesday July 25th, 2000 8:31:53 PM
The priest dutifully turns and follows Bill back towards the hamlet.
Draax Tuesday July 25th, 2000 11:33:11 PM
Draax does not react to the little praise bestowed upon him by the stranger for his comment. He just nods himself. "I thought it was too good to be true." He get ready to head to town with the others and remembers the head. He says to the others. "I do not believe that we should leave the head unguarded, we should take it with us or I will stay here and watch over it."
Arrisa Wednesday July 26th, 2000 4:56:28 PM
Arrisa stopped outside the village and watched the others begin to walk awak. She hated going into civilised places, but it didn't show externally. She gathered herself together and then slowly followed behind everyone else...
DM Kent d20=3 Wednesday July 26th, 2000 5:21:47 PM
Watching Bill closely, Marteus answers, "the town died within two days of the loss of the head due to a combination of things. Part due to the magic associated with the Sentinel Statue and the protections left there by the Teucri, the lack of an appropriate renwal ceremony and of course one cannot forget the part played by the dragons and the Sahaugin.
As for your friends, indicating the town, you misunderstand me. They will be returned to full life and not Undead as you say. They may just not remember anything of what transpired.
So go see the sights, smell the smells, do what you need to do, but be back here by noon with your answer and with the ring or I will get angry. And dont try to hide or do anything with the ring for I will know and then your lives will be forfeit.
As you all wander through the town, again you see the black-tongued dead, and the unmarked dead, but you also see some with trident wounds, some that seem to have been frost bitten, burned and even some that seem to have had there flesh melted away like acid.
As you all aproach Andovan's General mMercentile, K'isst does indeed see some sort of movement, but when they arrive at the point nothing is to be seen but the two Andovan women lying across each other as if they were trying to protect something. Both the women have multiple puncture marks and wounds in their torso's. As you all try and puzzle this out, you hear a slight, muffled grunt from what seems to be under the two bodies and one of the ladies arms moves bounces up and falls back down.
K'isst Wednesday July 26th, 2000 10:58:48 PM
K'isst who had a scheme in mind is not surprised to find movement in a location separate than the "invented" movement she had made up to get the party to a certain place. Before everyone begins running to this "real" movement of the two women protecting something, she says, "I led you here on false pretenses. I made up this movement where the temple of Wardd used to be. We're now on holy ground. I wonder if Marteaus can harm us here. I thought it worth a chance anyway. Bill, stay here!!! I'll protect you as I can. Now, friends, the rest of you go help these women if you can."
Bill Troublefinder Thursday July 27th, 2000 12:44:37 AM
Bill was about to investigate the pile, but hears what K'isst has to say. "Oh, Wardd!" He looks around at the temple. "I like Wardd!" Looking toward the sky, he says sincerely, "Thanks for the fish!"
The little guy sits down in the midst of the rubble, and crosses his legs. "We need to pray ... oh, yeah, check that out," he says regarding the movement in the nearby pile. "But we should ask the gods for wisdom. This Ring is very important, I think. I guess that it kinda took over Galahad's ring, and added its abilities to it," he hypothesizes.
"And the Dark Lord really wants it. He SAYS it's 'just a simple ring of little value.' That's called negotiations. A gnomish proverb I heard once goes, '"It is bad, it is bad," says the buyer, but when he goes away he boasts of his purchase.' But it's also a lie. So we know he is not wholly committed to truth. Duh!"
Bill muses over the offer. "If he can restore genuine life to our town ... not undeadlings ... that would seem to be a good thing. A very good thing. But, if we give him the Ring, what overall good or ill would that bring to the Wold?"
Continuing, he observes, "I think he has some sense of the law, or of rules. But he is not a good man, I'd say. Calling Gargul a 'washed up do gooder' is really a strange description. Did Gargul used to be good? Maybe. Of course, I could be wrong about much of this, but I don't think so. Anybody here heard much about him before?"
Bill sighs. "We have, what, two, three hours before noon? I think your idea is good, K'isst, to remain on this holy ground for a bit. I'm going to go into a special kind of rest. My uncle, who taught me a lot about how to do some things, calls it 'rejuvenation.' I'll hang on to the Ring for now, unless someone else has a better idea."
"Akhum, and K'isst. You're both priests, right? As you are able, add your prayers. They shall be protection, indeed. Rond, my strong friend, and Sedar, astute one, think you, too, and pray. We face a decision, one which may bring life, or death, or both. Draax, noble of spirit and steadfast. Your mind is sharp. Pray for even greater sharpness."
He moves a small chunk of wall that was pressing under his thigh, and settles down again. "Arrisa, one with hidden depth, and Arien, skilled in tactics ... join us in asking for the guidance of the gods."
Bill closes his eyes, confident in the protection and attention of some portions of the host of heaven. "Do what you need to," he says quietly. A sharp intake of breath through his nostrils precedes a slow outbreathing through his pursed lips. The Ring lies still in his right hand, and his left covers the closed fist upon his lap.
Draax Thursday July 27th, 2000 5:16:54 AM
Draax remains with the head in the ceremonial area watching over it and staying a good distance away from Marteaus.
Rond Thursday July 27th, 2000 7:19:01 PM
Rond helps out with uncovering the 'presence' in the bodies. "I just wonder if Atmos is somehow intertwined in all this, or what?"
K'isst Thursday July 27th, 2000 8:07:31 PM
K'isst says, "I'm not a priest, just a warrior who believes strongly in her god." She waits anxiously to see what the others find out about the "real" movement.

Arrisa Friday July 28th, 2000 4:59:35 PM
Arrisa nods. She was more than happy to find a nice wood where she could be alone and pray. She looks around at the others. "I'll meet you all back here at noon then. If you need me sooner, call and i'll run to join you...". With that, Arrisa jog's off to find a wood. Once there, she finds somewhere to sit in peace and prays to the gods, her holy symbol taken from under her armour and held in her hands

[For 2nd hour, rejuvenation roll made.]
DM Kent d20=12 d20=15 Monday July 31st, 2000 7:25:11 AM
As Rond and Ahkum work removing the two women, one about 42 and the other about 22 and obviously mother and daughter, They continue to hear grunting coming from underneath. When finally the two are moved and other junk is cleared, before you is an extremely dirty, bruised, tired and scared Merik Andovan. As soon as he realises he is free, he starts flailing about him with what might be a small dagger. Missing both of you, but just by the hair of your.....
The others of you are finding some peace and quiet where you are in this god forsaken town.
Arissa please roll perception. as you enter the small wooded area you find.
Sedar of many questions Monday July 31st, 2000 7:25:12 AM
As the 3 survivors of Windhorn or freed, the mage puzzles over why the where spared. then speaking out loud "if they died two days after we left that means they were hidden here for weeks. this makes little sense. Didn't Marteus says they died within two days of our leaving ?"
Arrisa d20=11 Monday July 31st, 2000 1:34:37 PM
OOC: Made that perception roll...
IC: Arrisa carefully looks around the small woodland area to make sure it is safe for her to pray
Bill Troublefinder Monday July 31st, 2000 3:26:49 PM
[OOC: Sedar - the two women are dead. Only Merik is found alive, so far. Praise the heaven's he made it! Merik is the boy whom Bill & Rond met on the way to the House of the Crystal Sphere.
Merik was going to: 1. Keep an eye out on the militia, to see who was being alert, and who not; 2. Find hiding places for himself and the townsfolk.
If you go to the archives, and select the episode "The Sentinel Part 1" (or straight to the URL of <http://members.tripod.com/woldian/windhorn/B6email.html>, about 65% into it, you'll see an intro to the resourceful little boy, as he tries to plant some green slimy stuff in Bill's pocket. He is also the one that caused the chaos on the merry-go-round with the giants. Later, just before the party headed out to retrieve the Head, Bill, Galahad &K'isst went out looking for him. There's a bit about that in B7email.html, or The Sentinel Part 2.
Merik's father was also a benefactor of the group, having given Borbo an underwater breathing device.]
Ahkum Monday July 31st, 2000 4:03:19 PM
The priest stands well away from the boy as he goes frantic swinging his small knife. He stands by waiting and looks to sedar as he asks his questions nodding his own perplexed state at the turn of events.
Kisst Monday July 31st, 2000 11:32:39 PM
Kisst watches the scene, but will not leave holy ground as long as Bill has the ring. She guides Bill to the very center of the old church. "I hope he can't hurt us here. If he can, then The Gods of Wold have chosen not to help us and we're on our own. If we're on our own, then it's too late anyway. We should just give him the ring."
Arien Tuesday August 1st, 2000 12:09:16 AM
Happy that at least one resident has been found alive, Arien wanders about, never leaving sight of the main party though.
Draax Tuesday August 1st, 2000 12:41:07 AM
Draax continues to guard the head on the ceremonial grounds.
Rond Tuesday August 1st, 2000 9:35:07 AM
"Merik, it is good to see someone alive. Though you should have your eyes open, when you goto attack someone. You never know who you are going to encounter." If Merik opens his eyes, Rond will smile at him.
Bill Troublefinder Tuesday August 1st, 2000 11:07:15 AM
[short backstep] Just before entering into his trance of rejuvenation, Bill replies to K'isst, "If the righteous gods are for us, who can oppose us? If it is their will that, for whatever reason, we give the Ring to the asker, then I shall do so willingly. If they somehow tell us not to give it, then it will be up to us, I suppose, to oppose his desire with all our wit and will."
As he settles in, he looks up at K'isst. "Thank you, good friend." He smiles a tired but grateful smile at her, and crinkles his eyes.
Bill then looks at the ring in his hand for a moment, and recloses his fingers over it. "As I meditate, my spirit shall seek the guidance of our heavenly patrons. In any event, I do not think the asker will bother us before noon. I think he will keep his word. And I told him I, at least, would return. And if for any reason he should not restore life to our village, perhaps someone else, more worthy of our ... confidence, might so do." Bill then closes his eyes, and begins his measured breathing.
DM Kent Tuesday August 1st, 2000 5:02:18 PM
As Arissa enters the wooded glade, she notices that there is a ring of mushrooms entirely encirling the open meadow. There is also a nice comfortable grassy knoll in the middle of it.
As Draax watches the head and Marteus watches him, Draax starts feeling more than a bit sleepy as the sun starts to warm things up. Marteus watches as Draax's eyes droop and as he covers a few yawns. "Andraaxius, You really should get some rest, you seem to be tired I think I am going to go check on your friends. The head isn't going anywhere now." And with that comment he vanishes from sight.
As Rond and Ahkum dodge Merik's ineffective barrage they notice what looks to be a small dark whole under the area where Merik crawled from. As Rond calls Merik's name the boy begins to calm down, although there is an extremely panicky look in his eye. "Who is it? Who are you? How do you know my name?" Just as he finishes his questions, the boy collapses unconcious at your feet.
Sedar Tuesday August 1st, 2000 5:02:19 PM
As the others take care of the boy, The mages takes a look at the darkened area where the boy had lay hidden.
Draax Tuesday August 1st, 2000 10:39:16 PM
Draax looks at and listens to Marteus. As he begins to tell the man that he is just fine the man vanishes. He tries to stop a yawn, but he cannot stop it. He says to himself. "Maybe I can take a short little rest, but I am not going to sleep I will just rest my eyes." He climbs up on the top of the head, gets as comfortable as he can and is fast asleep in no time.
Kisst Tuesday August 1st, 2000 10:53:47 PM
K'isst nods to Bill and sits nervously on the ground and rocks back and forth watching the movement of the sun.
Ahkum Wednesday August 2nd, 2000 12:21:56 AM
The priest raises an eyebrow as the boy falls and sighs quickly setting the boy stretched out on the ground looking him over for wounds or marrings. He steals a quick glance to the darkness and shakes off the strangeness as he checks the boy for maladies.
Rond Wednesday August 2nd, 2000 11:42:22 AM
Rond moves to make sure that Merik is okay. He'll check to see if he's hurt physically anywhere, and make the boy comfortable. Once done he'll retrieve, or ask for some water and food, unsure how long Merick has been under the bodies (2 days or two weeks). "Hmm, seems he could verify or deny what has been said about time passage."
Arrisa Wednesday August 2nd, 2000 1:33:54 PM
Arrisa carefully looks around. She doesn't see anything threatening so far, so she carefully picks her way to the grassy knoll, showing the utmost care and respect for the nature around her. She was especially careful not to touch or damage the mushrooms in case they were marking a temple of sorts. When she reaches the knoll and sits down, she begins to pray to her goddess, her quarterstaff across her knee in case it is needed
DM Kent Wednesday August 2nd, 2000 9:43:19 PM
As Sedar inspects the hole he realizes that it is a small roughly cut out hole in what seem to be storm cellar doors leading under the store.
Bill, feeling quite refreshed, realizes that while his prayers/questions seem to be going out into the ether there doesn't seem to be much if anything in a way of any response coming back.
Almost as Bill is getting ready to give up he hears a quiet voice in his head. "Just give the ring up. It matters little in the bigger scheme of things." "Your town will live again." "I gave you my word." "Just give me the ring."
Ahkum and Rond get Merik comfortable and while there don't seem to be any injuries visible, it is obvious that he has not been eating or drinking well for some time.
While K'isst sits and frets she notices a familiar figure appear at the edge of the Temple grounds. As Arissa enters the mushroom ring and moves toward the knoll, the sunlight disappears and it becomes twilight. By the time she gets to the knoll she is suddenly surrounded by hundreds of fairies. All either have a weapon or a musical instrument in their hands. A male fairy, slightly large than the others flies forward and stops several inches from your face.
"Know you not of Fairy Rings mortal?" "Why have you come here?" "Be careful how you answer mortal, for a lie will, most certainly, mean instant death."
<< Arrisa simply blinks in confusion for a moment. She had never seen a fairy before, or even a fairy ring. She spoke quietly, and totally truthfully. "No, I do not know of fairy rings. I am sorry. I came here because it looked peaceful. I wish to pray to my goddess Mittiri for help. The village a little way from here was hit by something...horrible. There are others there also praying in their own ways to their own gods and goddesses for help." She looks around at all the fairies and smiles slightly. "I mean you all no harm. If you wish me to leave, then I will. If you wish me to give my weapon up to prove this, then I will also do that. As I said, I simply wish to pray, nothing more." She waits quietly for the fairies answer. >>
Bill Troublefinder Thursday August 3rd, 2000 1:30:56 AM
In his mind, Bill answers the voice. *"Oh, hello. Since you can figure out some of the things I'm thinking, and can tell me what you want me to hear, will you tell me a few things, Marteaus?"*
The halfling awaits some sign of assent, then continues. *"Very well, and thank you. Permit a small bit of babble, if you will."*
Mr. Troublefinder switches to speaking out loud, eyes yet closed. He wants K'isst to know at least his side of the conversation. "You claim our giving you the Ring would be a relatively small thing. Yet you desire it strongly - to the point of threatening us with death. To the point of offering a great gift - the lives of our friends and neighbors."
Bill switches to communicating the following through his thoughts. *"I am willing to risk death, if opposing you will benefit the Wold. Your threat, and I do not doubt your ability to carry it out, does not dispose me to submit to your will."*
Out loud again, Bill notes, "But the lives of our friends would be an enormous benefit." Bill pauses for a moment, taking a deep breath, "We cannot overlook it."
"The Ring must have enormous power," muses the hobbit. "And, I think it can combine with other rings, and gain their powers. The previous bearer of the Ring of the Water evidenced great powers." Rather drily, he suggests, "I trust you know a bit more about it than this."
Bill smiles, and says, "I suggest you don't try swallowing it," then gets serious, and interrupts this thought with a quick, "Not that I'm offering it. Our group will decide.
"So, enough of that. My questions - and my friends may have others - are:
"How will you use the Ring to help the people of Wold? Will you pledge to use it in service to the good, and honorable, and just, and praiseworthy, and noble, and true? Will you pledge not to use it for evil, or ignoble, or, um, unkind purposes?”
"You may hold we have no right to ask you these questions. You may think me an upstart. You, Dark One, Marteaus, may have the power to squish me like an insect." With sincerity, Bill adds, "I admire your restraint in refraining from doing so, sir."
And after a brief pause, he concludes, “But perhaps you would prefer answering these questions in the presence of my friends?” And he opens his eyes, and sees [I presume] Marteaus standing there just outside of the edge of the crumbled Temple of Wardd.
"What just and honest claim do you have for this Ring of the Water, other than dark desire?" he asks, still sitting cross-legged amidst the rubble, left hand over right fist over Ring. "How will you benefit the Wold if this Ring you bear? Please be not angry, but, might there not be hands better suited than yours to wear it? May the righteous gods, and the Lord of this temple, and the Sentinel, and we be witness to your answer."
Bill observes Marteaus' countenance, ready for action, or ready to make an agreement, based upon what he sees, and hears. His will is guarded. And in the background of his mind, his prayers yet ascend.

Kisst remaining alert (con check of 1) says, "I say no. Don't give it to him." She looks resolutely at Marteaus as she says this.
DM Kent d20=8 Monday August 7th, 2000 7:29:25 PM
Marteus, standing at the edge of the ruined temple, looks at Bill. "Little Troublefinder, I find that I am getting extremely tired of your questions and interference." "I offered you a trade only because it suited my whim at the moment and because I know how you mortals like to trade and barter."
"Now then, you have just about 2 hours to make your decision and then the first of you will die. After that one will die every 5 minutes until you give me the ring or you all are dead and I just take it. Let's see, just so you have something to look forward to, the boy will be the first to die."
As Sedar looks into the hole, he can just make out what seems to be steps leading down. No other signs of life are visible.
Arien heads out to check on Draxx and finds him sound asleep by the Sentinel Head.
Rond makes Merick as comfortable as possible. his breathing eases and a bit of color returns to his cheeks. However Rond also notices that the tips of Merick's little fingers are black.
The Fairy King looks at Arissa a moment and then as one all the fairies start laughing, sounding like thousands of little bells being rung. In between guffaws, the Fairie King manages to gasp out, "She wants to leave." Which starts off yet another round of uproarious laughter. After a few moments the laughing quits and the king looks at you and says, "No, I think not. I do not believe I will let you leave just yet. Perhaps in a hundred years or so." As for your weapons, you may keep them or not as you wish. For should you choose to use them you will be dead before you finish drawing it." "I think perhaps we shall dance for a while." Almost immediately there is lots of music, reels and jigs are being played and performed by the fairies and the king turns to you and says, Dance. Roll save vs spell at -3. (roll on the board as if you were posting and I will check there)
Arissa finds herself starting to dance to the fairy music. It seems that you must have danced for days when the music finally stops. You are extremely tired, thirsty and hungry. The faries bid you follow them and they lead you to a large feast. There are all sorts of nuts and berries, grains, breads, and vegetables to eat and there are several sweet wines and beverages. You are suddenly surrounded by 8 small, very handsome male faries each is offerring you something to eat or drink.
<< Arrisa is slightly shocked at hearing she may have to marry a fairy. That thought did not comfort her. She then decided that she HAD to get away and find everyone else. Arrisa acted normally, enjoying the feast and the dancing. Once the dancing spell had worn off however, she attempted to sneak away from the fairy camp. Using her skills as a ranger, an elf and a wilderness runner to hide and quickly escape from the faires and return to her companions >>
Sedar Monday August 7th, 2000 7:29:26 PM
Moving over to Bill T "what do you really thing this ring is .... you had mentioned a little whi;e back that it helped or was helped by other rings, what did you mean by that" awaitng a response he shows Bill T the 2 rings upon his fingers. "these are the ones we were given by Atomos"
Bill Troublefinder Tuesday August 8th, 2000 1:11:45 AM
Bill nods, indicating he understands Marteaus. [Does Marteaus move off, or just stand there at the edge of the temple? If he moves off...]
"What boy?" Bill asks. "K'isst, what boy is he talking about?" He awaits her answer - Merik, of course.
"Merik? Merik! He's alive? Oh, he's alive!" Bill stands up, and dances in a little circle. "Oh, I knew he was resourceful. I knew he'd make it! He did as I asked! Oh, what a good boy!" Bill pauses in his exaltation, and asks, "Where was he found? Oh, have him come here!"
Bill catches up on the news from those who have been out and about.
Responding to Sedar, Bill begins to answer, then says, "Tell you what, let's get everybody here, and talk this over. I'll tell you what I think about the Ring, and we can think about what Marteaus is asking. Demanding, really. And, offering."
Bill, heeding K'isst's earlier counsel, remains in the rubble of the Temple of Wardd. "Sedar, could you gather Rond, Draax, Arrisa, Arien, Ahkum, and Merik? I'd better wait here."
Rond Tuesday August 8th, 2000 10:16:05 AM
"What have you found in there, Sedar? I am not sure, but Merick may be in trouble, I can see black around his fingernails. I'm not sure what that means." (I believe we are seperate from the Marteus scene?!)
Draax Tuesday August 8th, 2000 11:55:56 AM
Draax will continue to sleep on top of the head until he is rested or until someone or something wakes him up.

DM Kent Wednesday August 9th, 2000 7:45:07 PM
Sedar, Ahkum, Rond and Merik are at or looking in the cellar doors across the street and not privy to the Bill's discussions. In fact, if you turn around you will see Marteus between you and Bill and Kisst. Arien is currently with Draxx at the Head and Arissa seems to be somewhere else at the moment.
Arien as you aproach the head and try to shake Draxx feel very sleepy suddenly. Save vs spell -3.
Marteus remains standing at the edge of the temple facing Bill except for one moment where he turned toward Rond and company. Turning back he all but snears at Bill and says, I think I will remain here while you make your decision so that I can watch you sweat a bit.
Each time Arissa seems to be getting near what appears to be the mushroom ring she finds herself back at the hill and surrounded by laughing Fairies. The King finally confronts her on her third attempt. "Is the prospect of marrying me so horrid? Do I not have a pleasant countenance?
<< Arrisa simply shakes her head. "I don't marry people that I don't know, and I don't like to be kept in one place without a choice in the matter.". Her face clearly showed that she wasn't very happy, but it didn't show that she was desperatley trying to keep herself under control. "I do not like to be with any form of civilisation for too long, and though this is a very enjoyable place, I feel uneasy. I need to get back to the forest. You can see I am an elf and you should understand that.". Arrisa's grip on her quarterstaff tightens slightly and she continues to speak. "Plus, I don't think Mittri would be very happy if you kept one of her rangers from doing her job, do you?" >>
Kisst Wednesday August 9th, 2000 9:52:24 PM
My decision is made. You will not get the ring. I could never enjoy my afterlife if I knew I traded to the King of Evil something he wanted so bad. I'd rest uneasy wondering if I did the right thing. All I know is that evil is bad and you don't give magic to them. Especially magic they want so bad! You're bad to the bone Marteaus and my hand shall not help you in any way. Anyone trying to give you the ring will face my wrath. I love you Bill, but that's how I feel.
Bill Troublefinder d20=15 Thursday August 10th, 2000 3:47:52 AM
Bill just looks up at Marteaus, and shakes his head. "I suppose you can watch. It is a little bit warm."
The halfling is moved by K'isst's words and courage. "Boy, you feel pretty strong about it, don't you, K'isst? I don't know. I need to think a little more. I'm gonna rest for an hour. Maybe the rest of our group can get together by then." Bill yawns. He sits down again. "Where is everybody? I wanna hear what everybody has to say before we give a final answer."
He leans over and says to Marteaus, "You'll raise, like, everybody? If we give you the Ring?"
Bill tries to resume his rejuvenative meditation, but it doesn't seems to help much, what with the smelly scary red-eyed sepulchral man overseeing. *"Do none of the gods even care?"* he asks plaintively in his thoughts.
Bill thinks to the Ring, *"Oh, Ring of Water, what do you want? Do you have a will? I know you have power."* He doesn't really expect a response. He holds the ring so that it covers the tip of his index finger, his thumb completing a circle, his left hand yet over his right, and he rocks back and forth, hoping that his friends and companions will come.
Sedar Thursday August 10th, 2000 4:14:11 AM
Seeing very little in the darkened hole, Sedar looks about to see with others are up to. Taking in the scene of lonely Bill T standing against Marteus. He gathers those with him and points out the situation. "I think Bill T need our help, com'on" Giving a wiide berth to the old evil He makes his way to Bill T's side. Catching the tail end of the conversation between thr two he adds "I think his promises are hollow Bill T. He offers no truth in his words , just vague promises. Evil should not be granted its desires. Lets keep the ring."
Rond Thursday August 10th, 2000 11:25:43 AM
Rond moves to assist Sedar with the door.
Kisst Thursday August 10th, 2000 7:16:57 PM
Kisst turns to Bill. "The people in this town died fairly and squarely from the dragons. If Gargul wants them raised, he'll do it. If Mr. Dark Lord here raises them and we make the deal to do it, then Gargul will be like real mad at us and we'll probably be killed." Then she turns to Marteaus. "If you're like powerful and stuff, why don't you teleport our missing comrades here so we can get this over with." K'isst pulls her trident and begins sharpening it. "All this civilized talking about things just serves to make the evil deed nearly look like it's good. Bill, evil can look good, if not then no one would ever do it. However, evil can't stay looking good for long. Eventually it shows it's true colors and those who follow it's path can't stay just a little evil. They must become worse and worse until they are stopped or they realize how stupid they've been and change."
Arien d20-3=-1 Saturday August 12th, 2000 2:08:58 PM
As Arien approaches the head and Draax he begins to feel the effect of the two days of no sleep. He tries to shake it off as he continues to approach. As he nears the head the more the effort to stay awake is required. Finally as he reaches to waken his compainion he succumbs to the need and collapses to the ground, one hand outstretched touching the head. The sounds of his peaceful snoring fill the area, and a small smile finds itself to his face as he travels through his dreams.
Bill Troublefinder Saturday August 12th, 2000 8:47:50 PM
As Sedar is next to him, Bill rises, and takes his right hand in his, moving so that Sedar's body blocks Marteaus' view of Sedar's hand, as well as Bill's face. Bill looks up at Sedar, and says, "Oh, friend, I don't know what to do. Our village, our friends -- to live again." As he speaks, he slips off the ring that Sedar wears on that hand, and palms it. "How do we know he won't keep his promise? I think he would."
DM Kent Monday August 14th, 2000 9:14:07 PM
Turning toward K'isst as she finishes speaking, Marteaus asks, "WHAT KNOW YOU OF WHAT IS EVIL? AND BY WHAT RIGHT DO YOU SPEAK OF ME, WHOM YOU DO NOT KNOW, HALFBREED. AS FOR SLEEPING POORLY, YOU ALREADY DO BEACAUSE YOU CAN'T DECIDE WHO OR WHAT YOU ARE. And what is more evil? a person you know who is an enemy, threatening to kill you or a friend threatening to kill another whom she calls friend?"
To Bill. "I have already said I will return the lives of your friends and families to them. And see how your *friend* proves her own point for her. Did she not say that evil could only hide as good for so long before its true colors are seen? And just moments ago did she not just threaten all of you? She traps herself in her own glibness.
"And if you wanted all of your cmpanions with you all you have to do is ask? Well all but one anyway. It seems that one of your friends has passed through the veil of this world and into another. Her return is up to another.
With a casual wave, a sleeping Arien and Draxx appear about twenty feet from your group.
[The King of the Fairies with Arrisa] The King speaks. "So YOU don't like this and YOU don't like that. Well let me remind YOU that it was YOU who entered our land unasked and uninvited. It was YOU who ate our food. and now YOU insult me. As For Mittri, I am sure she would understand as she is fully aware of our realm and the penalties for uninvited entry. Now I am getting extremely weary of YOU and your attitude. Now I suppose, I should just have YOU killed, but I think I will let YOU leave. However, YOU will be beholden to me and us and YOU will be expected to peform a duty for us in the future. There will be NO argument or discussion on this and YOU will swear by Mittri that YOU will do this or YOU will DIE here and now."
Arrisa keeps her comments and her feelings to herself, but she was angry. She growled slightly and answered. "Fine, I swear by Mittri that I'll repay you in some way. No-one told me this was your realm, and the only reason I ate was to stay alive as you wouldn't let me leave originally." Arrisa turned and ran, shouting behind her... "Find me when you want me, i'm sure you know how..."
Draax Tuesday August 15th, 2000 5:21:23 PM
Draax stares up into the sky at the big black dragon as it circles for another pass. He holds his magical glowing sword up high, shaking his head at the creature in pity because it knows not whom it is facing. As creature begins its decent Draax raises his shield and readies his sword waiting to end this creatures life once and for all. The black dragons comes in low knocking the sword and shield out of Draax’s hands and knocking Draax to the ground. The great beast gives a roar of triumph as it circles around to bestow the killing blow. Draax lies on the ground smiling to himself knowing that the creature is playing right into his hands. As the creature comes in for the finally kill, Draax jumps up and grabs the dragon around the neck some how getting his arm all the way around the giant beast and stopping the creature in its tracks. Draax the mighty squeezes the large neck until he hear the bones pop and the beast stops struggling. He drops the dead dragon to the ground and raises his hand in victory as the town people come from out of their hiding places to praise their hero. As Draax rolls over in his sleep, a big smile comes to his face as he replays his dreams of heroism. “zzz zzz zzz zzz”

I must have hit pretty close to cause you to defend yourself like that. When Bill takes off the ring, Kisst's mouth drops open. "No BILL! NOOO! Then Marteaus tells them of one of their comrades that has passed through to another place. "You killed him!" "AAAAUUUUUUGHHHHRRRR!" K'isst pulls her trident and in a mad rage charges Marteaus. She strikes at him hitting AC-3 and doing 14hpd if she hits and he is large sized. (11 if she hits and he's medium.)
Arien Wednesday August 16th, 2000 5:39:52 AM
Arien dreams of a great maze filled with deadly traps which he disables with the merest flick of his wrist. Pit traps that he crosses with ease on a tightrope. Fierce creatures that flee at the sound of his name. And most of all, wealth. Large mountains and piles and hills of gold, platnum, rubies, emeralds, and diamonds. He swims in a veritable ocean of treasure and laughs with delight. Back in reality however he simply smiles, laughs quietly and makes swimming motions as he lies on his back in the dirt.

Bill quickly takes a scroll case out of his knapsack, opens it, reaches into a pouch, and puts something small, round and shiny inside the oiled parchment within the scroll case. "Sedar, hide this," he whispers to his friend. "Pray, and work." Then the halfling disappears.
Rond Wednesday August 16th, 2000 5:01:23 PM
Seeing that there is nothing else to this little hole, Rond looks up when he hears Kissts' scream. As Rond sees her closing, he begins to close also.

With a flick of his wrist, Marteus' staff swings up and deftly deflects K'issts strike.(Hits AC -10) With another flick of his staff his return strike catches K'isst in the side (AC -10 for 38 points of damage) and sends her crashing back the way she came from. With a light sneer on his face, Marteus says, See, once again she shows her evil side attacking without provocation and during a time of truce.
As Arien and Draxx land in the temple grounds their lassitude passes and they wake.
Rond is halfway back across the road when he sees K'isst flies back the way she came and crumples to the ground with a scream of pain.
Bill hands his packet to Sedar and as he vanishes you here him yell NOoooooooo.
K'isst Thursday August 17th, 2000 10:41:34 PM
K'isst does a sideways flip as the staff catcher her in the ribs. "Ack!" She cries out in pain. The shot knocks her against a stone fireplace nearby and she collapses unmoving in a heap.
Dm Kent (Part 2) Friday August 18th, 2000 7:17:24 PM
As Bill vanishes Sedar sees something red and shiny fall to the ground. At closer inspection it he sees that it is the ring, and lying next to it is the small tip of Bill's little finger. Just about this time Arissa comes bolting inot the temple grounds as if she appeared from out of thin air.
Arrisa Friday August 18th, 2000 9:20:50 PM
Arrisa skids to a stop and blinks. "Okay, so what has been going off here while i've been away?". She turns Marteus and blinks again. "Oh! Have I been gone that long?". Arrisa then turns to the group. "Where's Bill? What's wrong with Kisst? It looks like I've missed a lot!". She runs over to Kisst and checks to see is she is still alive.
Arien d20=11 Friday August 18th, 2000 11:14:20 PM
Yawning hugely, Arien sits up in time to see K'isst go flying. Noting who was responsible he throws himself into a backwards sumersault, when he comes upright his bow is in one hand and an arrow is in the other. (succesful tumbling roll)

"Billlllll ..." As his friend disappears. "Nooooo !...." He leans down and deftly picks up the contested ring. The mages allows his expression to run between rage and worry for his friend. Turning to his evilness he sees K'isst fly backwards. "what is this cursed thing that you seek. And what has it done to Bill T" As he looks down at the severed finger that his little friend left behind."
[RWI] Bill Halfling-In-Pain, Finger-Bleeding-On-the-Table Troublefinder Sunday August 20th, 2000 6:38:40 PM
Bill, sans fingertip and Ring, arrives at the place he visualized - on top of a table near a fireplace in the Red Wyrm Inn, in Plateau City, perhaps a hundred miles from tiny Windhorn Hamlet.
He had sensed something, or someone? helping give him a boost in his attempt to teleport to the place he thought to gain assistance. A corner of his mind plans to express his gratitude, when and if he discovers whom to thank. He hadn't expected the Ring to remain behind, but, in hindsight, sees a pattern. It earlier popped through his chest when he had swallowed it, then teleported only ten feet away.
[In the Inn] *POP!* "-CH! Ouch-ouch-OUCH-ouch-ouch. Owie!" The patrons sitting at a table not too far from the fireplace hear this intense tenor vocalization coming from a three-and-a-half foot tall hobbit standing with his eyes closed at the edge of their table, holding a bleeding finger. He opens his eyes. "The Ring! It tore me again!" he declares. "Help! Marteaus is trying to get the Ring of Waters! Clerics! Wizards! Fighters! Gods above! Heed my words, before it is too late! It's the Dark Lord!"
[Perhaps it goes without saying that the adventuring troupe back in Windhorn Hamlet are not privy to Bill's whereabouts and actions. Posting here per Jerry &Kent's guidance, as well as in the Red Wyrm Inn.]
Rond Sunday August 20th, 2000 11:01:00 PM
skidding to a halkt, Rond quickly gets confused. Looking at Arrisa, " I don't know how long you've been gone. All I know, is that Kisst is down, and we've still got some time left before we have to make final decisions. How is Kisst?" When Rond sees Sedar pick up Bills finger, Rond says, "hmm, Bill has not had much luck with that ring." Rond will move closer to Sedar, to inspectthe Ring.
Draax Sunday August 20th, 2000 11:11:31 PM
Draax wakes up and at first he thinks that he is still sleeping. He looks around and wonders how did he get to his current location. He remembers climbing on the top of the head and going to sleep. He looks around for the head and does not see it, but sees K'isst lying on the ground and Rond closing on Marteus. He sighs, readies his shield and draws his longsword. He looks up into the sky and says "I guess this is good a day as any to die." He starts moving toward Marteus slowly at first to wake himself fully and get the feeling back into his limps. He increases his pace and begins to charge Marteus.
DM Kent (Charge of the Light brigade, or Custers last stand?) Monday August 21st, 2000 8:40:12 PM
Marteus shakes his head solemnly and with a grim look on his face splits his attention between Rond and Draxx and takes a quick glance at Arien. Now I realize that it is a fine day, but do you really want to die? All I want is that ring. I might even consider bringing your (dripping with sarcasm) friend back to life as part of the deal. However, you have to make the decision now as I tried to be nice and see what happened.
DM Kent (The Inn) Monday August 21st, 2000 9:01:55 PM
Sweetie Pie
Her attention to Figment's next surprise is redirected at Bill's shouting. She sighs, gets up, and walks with a slight limp over to his table. "Honey, we're watching a spectacle right now. Can't whatever you're hollering about just wait? If you'll get down from the table top, I'll see if I can get you something to ... oh, you're bleeding." She looks at the six burly porters surround the table on which Bill stands. "You'll have to forgive him. He's excitable, you see." She puts her hand on the two men who were splashed by the halfling's blood. "We'll get you all cleaned up." And looking at Mr. Troublefinder, she says. "Hop on down, and we'll have someone bandage you. Okay?"
Ida Feat
Ida hears Sweeties call for bandages and quickly hurries over to her and the halflings aid. Looking at the halfling's wound he gives a low whistle. Now that is what I call a clean wound. I dont think I have ever seen a wound quite that smooth and clean cut before. And so even too. How did you ever get such a wound? Whoever was wielding the blade that did this must have been a Master. With this kind of precision he might have cut just about anything he wanted to. After speaking he grabs Bill's hand, and with a quick, "This is gonna hurt." pours some liquor on it and proceeds to bandage the finger and hand.
Kisst Monday August 21st, 2000 10:22:35 PM
Kisst lays motionless on the ground. A beetle begins crawling over his limp form and settles on K'isst's nose, inspecting it.
[Red Wyrm Inn] Bill Troublefinder Tuesday August 22nd, 2000 12:01:49 AM
"But ... oh ... no thank you Swee ... sorry ... It's the DARK LORD! ... not now," he says to Sweetie, the porters, the crowd, then Ida, as the half orc somehow manages to pull him off the table against his will. "Ring, not blade." When Ida pours the alcohol above the remaining joint of his index finger, Bill has a sharp intake of breath, then his cheeks puff out, his lips fighting to keep from expelling the sound he feels like making. Instead, small whistling sounds, almost kazoo-like, as when someone holds a fine paper against a lady's comb, and hums, come through his lips. His face red against the bags under his eyes, Bill finally resorts to hyperventilation.
Sedar the Mage Tuesday August 22nd, 2000 12:01:50 AM
"HOLD !" crying out to his friends. A queit calm settles over the mage as he fiddles with the Ring. With a quick glance he compares the Ring to the others that he wears. Casual showing Rond the Ring when the fighter moves along side, but makes sure he can"t take it. "You have not answered my questions evil one !" with a firm voice, as he stands awiting the evil ones attention.
Rond Tuesday August 22nd, 2000 3:36:20 PM
"and we have not reached the time deadline you had given us."
Draax Tuesday August 22nd, 2000 4:16:28 PM
Hearing Marteus words Draax still continues his charge until Sedar calls for him to hold. Draax stops short of the dark one and looks around in confusion. "Can someone tell me what is going on here? And what happened to K'isst? Is she dead, asleep, or what?" He keeps an eye on Marteus and lowers his sword, but keeps it inlined with the dark one. He stands there calmly, glad that he heard Sedar's call. He continues to keep his eyes on the man and knows that he would be dead now if he did not stop. He also hopes that his nervousness is not showing on his face.
K'isst Tuesday August 22nd, 2000 7:20:12 PM
The beetle begins to chew on Kisst's left nostril. She pulls a small chunk of flesh off of her face and begins to go it's merry way. A few buzzards begin to spin in the air above the scene. Kisst remains motionless.
DM kent Tuesday August 22nd, 2000 8:47:21 PM
Marteus Looks at Rond as he has the termerity to ask for the extra time. Yes The extra time I alloted you is not up, but then i did not attack you. Rather it was you who attacked me. Hence I find it more than resonable that I demand a response and a decision NOW!
Turning to Sedar, as for your questions, I have know idea where your friend went or what he caused the ring to do to him. however, I would say off hand, little smile, that the ring chose not to travel with him. I think it shows decidely good taste, on the part of the ring, if you ask me. as for me being evil as you say. What evil thing have you seen me do or have I done to you?
[Red Wyrm Inn] Bill Troublefinder Tuesday August 22nd, 2000 9:21:40 PM
Getting his pain under control, Bill says to Ida, "Thanks, I'm Bill." Normally, he would stay around to chat and find out the name of the fellow who helped him, but an urgency burns within the halfling, and he runs, dodging and sprinting toward where he sees the larger group of people gathered. "Hear me, all. Marteaus, the Dark Lord, enemy of much that's good, enemy even of Gargul of the afterlife, seeks power."
He climbs up on a nearby table, and repeats himself, then continues, "And he covets a Ring. The Water Ring. The Ring of Water. He is at this moment back in my town, Windhorn Hamlet. Our people are dead. He offers them life, in exchange for this Ring." Bill holds up his bandaged left hand. "Moments ago, I held the Ring on the tip of this finger, trying to bring it here. But it remained in my town, from whence I teleported."
He sees the clerics wearing a modified symbol of Gargul. "Marteaus opposes you. He will kill my friends. We returned the Sentinel Head, but need many people to help it again protect us from the Dragons." Though the skin of Bill's face shows prolonged exposure to water, and the bags under his eyes show lack of sleep, his eyes burn bright with passion.
"Who will help us? Who can help us? I call upon the people of this Inn. I call upon the Gold Dragons and the Lord High Mayor, who own this fine establishment. I call upon the Gods of goodness, the Gods of power. Beware Marteaus. Help us oppose him. Who will stand? Who will help?" Bill's right hand rests over his heart, his wrist just above a bandolier holding several darts.
Sedar the Mage Tuesday August 22nd, 2000 9:21:41 PM
"what evil you have done to me. The simple threat of death surely is not a good act. I tire of your banter lets be done with this. .... My answer is this ... you will not be given this ring." he then draws himself yp and stands queitly. 'wondering why this great evil hasn't just taken it, perhaps he can't. What would happen if he put on the ring, hmmm'
Arrisa Wednesday August 23rd, 2000 2:38:59 AM
Arrisa stands up after listening to the conversation. "Well, Kisst isn't standing up anytime soon. At least, not unless someone can restore life to the dead.". She turns to Marteus. "What is this ring? I thought it was a simple ring that let me breathe water?"
Draax Wednesday August 23rd, 2000 11:32:35 AM
Noticing that no one has answered his questions, but he thinks he figured out what is going on by listening to the conversations. Draax looks over at K'isst's body. He whispers to himself "Dead?" He slowly backs away for the dark one and moves over to K'isst pushing away the beetle and checking for vital signs that he knows he will not find.
Rond Wednesday August 23rd, 2000 2:18:50 PM
"Having not participated in the conversation, I am not sure what you may or may not have said, that would cause Kissts' reaction. With the ease in which you dispatched Kisst, and the fact that you still haven't taken the ring, as you have said you will, I wonder why you even bother with this game? I wonder if the ring might have to be given over to you, and you cannot take it by force. Because as Bill has demonstrated twice now, it seems the ring may have a mind of its own."
Kisst Wednesday August 23rd, 2000 4:21:16 PM
Kisst remains motionless. The beetle races back to pick up the piece of flesh that it drops when it is pushed away. Then it continues on it's merry way. One of the vultures ventures a low dive over Kisst's body, but hurredly regains altitude as one of the big folk approaches its prey.
DM Kent Wednesday August 23rd, 2000 10:14:49 PM
Turning to Sedar, Marteus chuckles and then says I am sorry you feel that way truly I am Though in my defense, I never threatened to kill anyone, I believe my words were something like this.
"Now then, you have just about 2 hours to make your decision and then the first of you will die. After that one will die every 5 minutes until you give me the ring or you all are dead and I just take it. Let's see, just so you have something to look forward to, the boy will be the first to die."
To Arien, The ring is, what it is. I myself am not truly, totally sure of what it is. I suspect of course, but that is my business and not yours.
Looking down at K'isst and then over to Rond, As I have said before I made the offer to you, so you would feel as though you were getting something for the ring. As for the ring having a mind of its own, my, that is an interesting thought and one that I will explore at length.
As Bill continues his tirade, he attracts several of the inn's patrons around his table including one of G'aals, red-sashed priests. The others look more like typical for hire mercenaries who smell a possible payday of some sort. In fact one of them asks, Wut's inet fer us, wot?
[Red Wyrm Inn] Priests of ... And beanplosion Thursday August 24th, 2000 2:50:03 AM
The dark robed priests with the "classic" version of Gargul's eye as a holy symbol throw back their hoods. The leader speaks with a real forked tongue. "Ssooo Bill isss itss? And you'zzzz been hiding thingssss from our masssterr Marteauussss?" At this, all gets very quiet and more than one sword's peacebond is broken.
However, immediately something else happens that sorta distracts everyone from killing the cultists in their midst. See, Figment's messing with the bean curd causes a bubble to pop, a small little bubble that caused a slightly larger bubble, say about 20' across that was every so boldly holding about 3000' cubic meters of steaming bean curd at bay, to pop. All hear the pop. Then "Brooooommmmmbp!!!" It explodes. Bean curd explodes out all the holes dug into the volcano showering all inside the Inn and leaving bean curd covering everything. Good quality been curd, but bean curd. Yuck!" In fact, the word "yuck" seems to be quite a popular word for awhile.
[Red Wyrm Inn] Bill Troublefinder Thursday August 24th, 2000 2:53:55 AM
"In it for you?" Bill asks, bewildered by the question for a moment. His attention is then drawn toward the priest. He seems fascinated by the unusual tongue. "Your masssterr?" he echoes, rather accurately producing the sibilant tone and timbre. Bill's eyes almost cross as he leans forward to focus on the face of the leader. Bill pulls back, opens his mouth in indignation, and finds it suddenly full of bean curd. Except for his right shoulder and head, the priest protected him from the neck down from the rest of the bean blast.
Bill sits down on the table abruptly, then rises again, a dart in his right hand, coughing and spitting curd upon the head of the priest of Marteaus.
Sedar the Mage Thursday August 24th, 2000 1:02:06 PM
A sense of fear rises in the 1/2 elf as he contemplates sliding the ring onto his finger. 'will being a mage make a differnce .. it hurt bill when he tried .. ... if it is so powerful that Marteus wants it what could it do for me. ... ' he looks at the two rings he already wears and wonders about something that was said it the breif past. he moves the Ring to witin a hair of his finger,at the last moment he looks up at the Evil one, to see his reaction.

Rond keeps quiet to follow the current action. Rond is concerned for his safety, but since no all out attack has happened yet, by Marteus, he wonders what it is, that is not being told. He wonders about the time dilation, about the cellar where Marek was, and why he should still be alive, and whether the effect might be only ground level, or not. Since it was unsure whether Marek was in the cellar (below ground level), or at ground level (which happened after we pulled him out of the cellar)

"Oh, excuse me!" the halfling says quickly to the priest. "The curds are tasty, but they filled my mouth rather too quickly." Bill raises his sleeve so as to wipe off the priest's forehead, but appears to think better of it, and instead carefully steps back so he is about 2/3rds of the way across the table away from the religious leader.
He raises his voice. "These folk here follow the Dark Lord Marteaus. They are afraid of having things hidden from their 'Masssterr.'" He shrinks back, looking fearful. "Their tongues are forked. Do they spew venom?" The diminutive orator holds his left hand before him, as though to ward a spray of venom from his eyes. "If this is what becomes of the followers of Marteaus, what does that say for the Dark Lord himself? Shall we support such a one? One who gives out snakey tongues?" Bill sticks his tongue out of his mouth and wiggles it up and down. "I would invite those here to show them all the hospitality they deserve. But, unseemly behavior is not necessary."
He calls across the room, "Oh, Master Franklin? Is a Gold Dragon here? Is the Lord High Mayor nearby? I crave their counsel. Great Dis Gruntle? Would you care to show these fine gentlemen how gifted you are in sculpture?" He keeps his eye on the priests, ready for action if necessary.

Looking at each party member in turn, starting with Ahkum, passing over Arissa, Arien, Draax, and Rond. Well, the five of you need to make a decision before your numbers dwindle any further. You now have 4 dead, the boy is dying and one has abandonned you. I wonder how many more of you will die before you decide that you want to bring life back to your village. Truly I weary of our banter decide now of I will take the ring and you will get no payment.

"Franklin asked so nicely, but I'll not get down from this table yet," Bill says, his piping voice projecting above the din of clattering dishes. "I want to tell you what my friend Rond said. As Marteaus approached us, my friend said, 'It only takes one to make a stand.'" Bill stands in the center of the table, and turns in a circle, looking at each of those seated around him. "Do you believe that Marteaus keeps his word? I do." He pauses. "When it suits him."
He pauses again. "Hear me, friends. Or not-my-friends. Marteaus carries with him the stench of death." Holding his hands about four or five inches apart, he says, "He has black fingernails this long. And the ashen skin of death. I asked him if he were Gargul's Emissary. He answered, 'Why, Gargul is nothing but a washed- up has been do-gooder.'" He raises his hands. "At this very moment, my friends are facing him, refusing to give him the mighty mysterious Ring of Waters. But their lives are forfeit if they refuse. I appeal for help. I don't know what to do. But here I stand, at a table with my enemies. Who will stand with me? Who has a spark of creativity to solve this puzzle? What will the Dark Lord do if given such a Ring? Time is short, oh so short!" Bill figures he is about to die.

As the ring reaches it's highest point in the arc of the throw Marteus raises his staff and a band of red flashes at one end of the staff as the ring descends he intercepts it with the staff and as it touches the staff there is a flash of blue and the ring vanishes. For a moment though, there appears to be a blue shimmering band on one end of the staff and a fiery red one on the other. With a satisfied chortle and a glance at the group he disapears.

However, about this time, an adventuring group all dressed in grey leave their table and surround the priests. "We believe you halfling. We have dealt with this water ring ourselves in the past at a Sahuagin City far in the south. We are at your service!" The priests look a bit worried, but try to act tough and brave. "You have seen the Ring with the Sahuagin? It is from them we obtained it." He looks around. "Perhaps we could spend a few moments to discuss options?" He sees the head waitress.
