Flueterflam
Wednesday January 3rd, 2001 2:57:47 PM

Fluet walks quietly up the stairs. And slowly.

Ingrge
Wednesday January 3rd, 2001 7:04:41 PM

Responding to Knarra Ingrge says, It hasn't been used recently and as Olanna has said something would have to be fairly small to get thru. Before we go up, don't forget to skip the yellow steps, I will try and spike this shut, so we don't have any suprises from the rear.

Dakar  d20=1
Wednesday January 3rd, 2001 8:18:50 PM

OOC: Apologies for my absence, moving back into school. Back now :)

IC: Dakar trods flat footed along the ledge until he catches up to the others.
"Odd, most people I knew used their front door for guests... Seems that isn't the case here though."

K'nara
Thursday January 4th, 2001 6:21:34 AM

The leader of the Emerald Talons nodded her acknowledgement of Ingrge's opinion, and gave a soft, wry chuckle at Dakar's.

"Somehow I doubt THIS wizard is particularly hospitable." she said in a low voice. "Let's give Milo a moment and then try to follow him up the stairs as quietly as possible..." Here K'nara unsheathed her sword and added: "...oh--and mind the yellow steps--we don't need more stone critters trying to chomp us!"

Olana
Thursday January 4th, 2001 11:32:45 AM

The elf creeps upstairs with the others, feeling a bit undressed for the occasion without any armour and still having the constitution of a wimp, she doesn't do anything too brave like get up to the front of the party.
Although rest assured, she will dive into the fray if necessary.

DM Jan (The Wizards House)
Thursday January 4th, 2001 11:54:07 AM

As Milo opens the door he sees 6 carpeted steps straight ahead, and at the top of them to the left, light from an open doorway.
There is a definite burning paper smell coming from up there, and a sound of things being torn, other stuff being knocked over and some frantic muttering.
He manages to catch the following words -
"....no need to panic ..... (expletive) Parnoth..... burn it..... it all.."

In the sewer, Ingrge notices a few holes in the grate that he might be able to wedge a spike into.

In the cellar, brave (Sir) Clegg, clutches at Shadrach again.
'I'm right behind ya, buddy," he chitters nervously. "Right behind ya."

Milo (Invisible)  d100=53
Thursday January 4th, 2001 2:39:34 PM

Turning to his friends as they come up the stairs, Milo whispers, "There are a few carpeted steps ahead, and then it sounds as if someone in there is scared... it may be a trick... so be careful, I'm heading in to see if I can get into a good position... follow when you're ready." With that said, the invisible halfling draws his short sword and pads quietly into up the carpeted stairway, and peers into the lighted room where the muttering is coming from.

Shadrach
Thursday January 4th, 2001 3:02:06 PM

He nodded and turned to Clegg, putting a finger to his lips. He tightened his grip on his trident.

Thursday January 4th, 2001 4:57:28 PM

The mage follows the others up the stairs and prepares to cast, not wanting to be caught by suprise.

Ingrge
Thursday January 4th, 2001 7:09:02 PM

wedging two spikes into the grate so it shouldn't open, Ingrge quicly follows the rest of the groupgoing through his spell in his mind trying to see what might be of use.

Dakar
Thursday January 4th, 2001 8:20:48 PM

Dakar picks his way slowly up the stairs following K'nara but keeping an eye on Clegg.
Mumbling to the leader he says "I don't trust the wily one in the rear... he may know something that we don't. He may be a deceitful agent, spreading lies."

K'nara  d20=2
Friday January 5th, 2001 7:14:13 AM

Again the dwarven battlerager's words smacked of wisdom, so K'nara paused long enough to whisper to Olana:

"Keep an eye on Clegg--if there's a battle, I want to be sure he doesn't turn tail and run...but I don't want to see him get hurt, either. Stay in the rear with him."

After listening to Milo, the tall human warrior nodded.

"I'll count off three--we go in when I hold up my third finger, okay..?" she said in a low voice, looking around at the others. "Dakar and me first--Ingrge and Shad next--Fluet and Figment third...and Olana and Clegg can bring up the rear. Ready..?"

K'nara shifted her bastard sword to her right hand, nodding as she silently counted off ten, then held aloft her left thumb. Another ten nods and her left index finger popped up. Ten more seconds and she flashed a total of three fingers on her left hand. Then she kicked the half-open door completely ajar and charged into the room...

(OOC: K'nara's counted off one-half round [or 30 seconds]--if there's combat, then Milo & the mutturing merchant will likely have their half of the round to themselves before the rest of the Talons enter the room. I rolled a Strength check in case K'nara needed it to kick open the door.)

Olana
Friday January 5th, 2001 10:43:35 AM

The elf slips toward the rear of the party on K'Nara's instructions, and stands next to Clegg, giving him one of her sweetest smiles, right before she pulls out a couple of daggers.

Friday January 5th, 2001 11:13:22 AM

Getting everyone in some semblance of order, the two warriors move past Fluet and the invisible Milo, and everyone charges into the room.

They are greeted by the following -
The room they enter is fairly big - it's wizard heaven - where sofas and a crackling fire in the hearth are surrounded by piles of books, tables full of weigh scales, sacks of powder and big glass bottles.
Racks of jars and vials line the walls - all labeled. On one table stands a large square wooden box, about 20 inches in diameter.

A man who Fluet recognises as the entemologist is stood in front of the fire where currently books and torn papers burn. One book - a bright green one - says "How to Kill Dragons" on a cover which quickly mottles and ingites.
'Spawn of Parnoth!!' he yells as they enter. 'You won't get anything from me!'
Obviously prepared for an attack, there is a soft whoosh and a *whump whump whump whump whump* as 5 magic missiles leave his fingers.
K'Nara and Dakar take the brunt of them. (K'Nara 12dam, Dakar 7 dam.)
It's party time.

Figment
Friday January 5th, 2001 12:41:05 PM

The mage counters the wizards words with "We are not from the dragon. We oppose him. Perhaps we can be of help to each other!". The mage does not wait for a response. Instead, he blasts him with his web spell plastering him to the wall. He makes ESPECIALLY sure not to get the sticky - and flammable - mass too close to the flames of the fireplace.

Milo (Invisible)
Friday January 5th, 2001 12:53:00 PM

Milo stands against the door frame, shaking his head slowly back and forth as he pinches the top of his nose with fore finger and thumb in a show of exasperation which of course is completely lost on everyone due to his current state of transparency. "Big folk... I just don't understand... " Looking up and muttering to no one in particular, "If I should grow to be twice my height, I would think I'd lose half my wits. Bless the gods for making me who I am today... a small sensible ..." trailing off, Milo remembers... 'hey.. I have a book' Seeing that Figment has effectively dealt with the wizard, Milo steps into the hall, away from the door, and sits on the floor up against the wall. Pulling the ancient book of Alemi out, he begins to read to himself.

Flueterflam
Friday January 5th, 2001 3:10:28 PM

Fluet falls back by Fig. Then moves out of EVERYONE's way, so as not to be hurt in any way. Muttering, "why's everyone always so assumptuou?" "Hey mage, we're here for YOUR help, to destroy that green guy YOU hate so much. Give us a second to explain before tryin to kill us."

Dakar the Painmonger
Friday January 5th, 2001 3:14:14 PM

Dakar yells "OATH!?" as the glowing beams of energy strike his chest. As the smoke curls up from the seared skin he curls his upper lip in anger.
"WE ARE NOT FROM THE BLEEDING DRAGON! Crimey. Shoot first and ask questions after seems to be the methodology here, isn't it? I've got a right mind to bash your skull in, but luckily my companion here." Dakar grunts again, prepared to shoulderslam the wizard if he attempts to wriggle free of the web, in an attempt to knock him into the ground.

Shadrach  d20+1=16
Friday January 5th, 2001 3:25:35 PM

He rushed in, ready to keep going in case Figment's spell missed. (AC2 for grapple if web missed.)

Ingrge  d20=9
Saturday January 6th, 2001 10:17:41 AM

stepping into the room, Ingrge ducks the 5 fiery misslies and a quietly muttered "Show off," is heard. As he sees his companions working and taking care of business, Ingrge quickly heads over to the fire to see what he can pull from the flames before being totally destroyed. (Dex roll made by 9)

K'nara (who had thought to let Milo go first, but...)  d20+9=22 d10+2=10
Monday January 8th, 2001 6:56:26 AM

K'nara snarled an epithet as the damage from the wizard's offensive spell slammed into her, then leaped forward, her blade aiming for the hand from which the missiles launched. (OOC: I'm rolling as per 3ed rules--hitting AC 22 and causing 10hp damage total. K'nara's sword is NOT flaming...yet.)

Olana
Monday January 8th, 2001 10:50:17 AM

The elf slips in with the rest, keeping a good eye on Clegg. She ducks as the missiles go flying and moves further into the room, checking for other possible threats.

DM Jan (The Wizards House)
Monday January 8th, 2001 11:29:23 AM

With a squawk, the wizard get's tangled into Figment's web, and glares at those before him malevolently. Any conciliatory explanations he hears do not appear to alter his 'sunny disposition'.

Ingrge manages to rescue a sheaf of papers from the fire, the bottom part of which is burned away.
A quick flick through reveals...
- note about blackmailing another member of the council.
- The opening paragraph about a plan to enslave all non-humans in the City and it's surrounding areas.
- An extremely derogatory note about Mop, the dragon's right hand man.

Whoever these were addressed to - has been burned away.

There is a muffled sound of commotion coming from outside, beyond a curtained window.
Also, the big box on the table starts to hum, and is moving slightly.

The wily Clegg starts running about the room, frantically searching for something.

((OOC - not at 3rd Edn yet folks. Still 2nd until I've got everyone's sheets in and I give the dreaded "call". I'll negate K'Nara's attack so the sword doesn't get stuck in the web.))

Milo (Invisible)
Monday January 8th, 2001 1:13:25 PM

Curious about the commotion, Milo hops up from where he is sitting, closes his book and places it carefully inside his satchel. Then,he quickly stalks over to the curtained window and has a peak outide.

Figment  d20=17
Monday January 8th, 2001 3:23:44 PM

The mage glares at the mage and says "Either cancel the attacks you just initiated or we will kill you while you are immobile. We'll at the very least burn your house and all your work if we are unable to kill you - which I really doubt we'll have much trouble with.". He glances around at the room trying to determine where this set of potions might be and what that box is doing (Int - by 1).

Ingrge
Monday January 8th, 2001 7:19:25 PM

making sure the papers are out, Ingrge quickly scans the papers and then puts them in a pocket for later study. Wth a quick flip of his wrist, he pulls aside the curtain to see what is to be seen.

Dakar
Monday January 8th, 2001 8:02:27 PM

The battle-rager turns to his companions. "How long will the web last?" he murmurs, trying to be out of the Wizard's hearing. He keeps his gaze steady, focused at the mage before him and his hand stays near his axe.

K'nara
Tuesday January 9th, 2001 7:02:56 AM

Seeing that Figmentary's spell stopped the wizard, K'nara stayed her blade and resheathed it instead.

"I believe you owe our client here some monies for services rendered." she said to the Webbed wizard in a hard, frosty voice as she nodded her cauled head at the busily-searching Clegg. "We're just here to see that he's paid what he's owed...in fact, we may have business to conduct with you ourselves..."

Olana
Tuesday January 9th, 2001 11:20:09 AM

Olana sticks to Clegg like glue, with an eye to what the others are doing. If he tries anything funny, she's right there to stop him.

DM Jan (The Wizards House)
Tuesday January 9th, 2001 11:58:54 AM

As Milo and Ingrge take a look outside, they see the following -

Below them is the front path leading to the house. There look to be about two dozen soldiers out there.
One of them has stepped on a drawn sigil, scuffing it and rendering it useless, and so now about 8 of them are getting clobbered by a newly activated stone dog guardian.
Their captain is red-faced and yelling at someone who is crouched over and hastily redrawing the sigil.
The captain happens to look up toward the window.
"Open up!" he yells. "Open up for the City guard!"

Meanwhile - the trapped wizard is glaring at K'Nara, Figment, Fluet and Dakar.
"Don't give me your lies!" he spits. "I've been following you! I know you are servants of the dragon! You've done his work before! Your infiltration into that paltry excuse for a resistance was clever but you don't fool me!!"
He continues to wriggle, mumbling something, and the box on the table becomes even more agitated.
"My beauties!!" he yells, and the box lid starts to come off as though something is trying to push it's way out.

As Figment, and K'Nara glance away and toward Clegg, they see him pointing at a rack of squat little bottles on the wall.
"That's what you need!" he exclaims, "and here - is what I came for!"
He holds aloft a heavy sack, then turns to Olana.
"Outta my way little girl," he snarls. "I'm getting outta here!"

Figment
Tuesday January 9th, 2001 12:53:42 PM

The mage runs over to the potions, grabs them, and shoves them in his pack. "Ok guys, I'd say we leave now and set this thing on fire. Let the guards deal with this guy. We've got bigger fish to fry!". With that he prepare to depart, not wanting to engage whatever comes out of that box.

Shadrach
Tuesday January 9th, 2001 1:16:12 PM

Shad rushed over to the box and pushed down on the top with all his weight. "I hate bugs.."

Milo (Invisible)
Tuesday January 9th, 2001 2:28:42 PM

Quickly moving out from underneath Ingrge, Milo's disembodied voice can be heard as he makes his way across the room towards the open door, "Um guys... we've got big trouble, city guard... whoa... big trouble... remember folks, discretion is the better part of valor," then mumbling to himself, "and since cowardice is the better part of discretion," louder again, "Lets get outta here." The halfling's voice can be heard trailing off as he turns the corner, and heads for the way they came in...

Flueterflam  d20=10
Tuesday January 9th, 2001 4:44:49 PM

"Um, i agree with Milo. If the guard's coming we better hit the sewers and hang out for awhile." Fluet looks around at the wizard's stuff. Tryin to notice anything that seems so exotic or unusual that he might ask someone about it. (made vol per)

Ingrge
Tuesday January 9th, 2001 6:47:53 PM

Seeing the guards and then hearing Milo's disembodied voice coming from practically below him, startles Ingrge a bit and hastily he back pedals and as people start talking about tactical retreat, Ingrge looks around for anything that might be useable and quickly accesible, particularly any nearby scrolls or spell books etc.

Dakar
Tuesday January 9th, 2001 7:51:57 PM

"Well, Wizard? What shall it be? A certain death with the guard or offer assistance to us? My word is always true and I shall tell you that I have had no dealings with the dragon. You may use divination magics to make sure of this afterwards but for now your choice is twofold."
The berserker keeps his hand by his axe, continuing to stare down at the mage.

K'nara
Wednesday January 10th, 2001 6:34:15 AM

Mightily tempted to just leave the wizard here and run, K'nara jerked her head towards the door.

"Everybody out, now! You all know where to go from here. I'll cover you..." Then she turned hard hazel eyes toward the wizard in the web. "What do you choose, mage..? To stay here for the guards to find...or to come with us?" K'nara drew her sword from her scabbard once more, this time uttering the magic word to activate its flames. She wouldn't move until everyone else was out of the room and she was covering the Talons' retreat. It would be up to the trapped wizard whether or not he would go with her.

Olana
Wednesday January 10th, 2001 11:15:03 AM

Giving Clegg a firm smile, the elf replies. "You get to leave when K'Nara says so."
As the warrior gives the order to retreat, Olana asks "What if he lies? What if he tells the soldiers we were here to rob him and sends them after us?"
Backing toward the door, she will try and organise Clegg's retreat in such a way that he doesn't just run off and leave them.

DM Jan (The Wizards House)
Wednesday January 10th, 2001 11:36:21 AM

As K'Nara's sword ignites, the wizard appears to become equally inflamed, refusing to answer either her or the dwarf, instead he repeats his spell at the top of his voice.

Beneath the burly Shadrach, the box jumps and lurches.
(Shad - roll under your strength to keep the lid on.)

Figment collects the potions from the shelf on the wall. There are twenty of them.

As Fluet and Ingrge take a look around the room, amongst all the jumble are two well-worn, bound notebooks and a clutter of scrolls here and there.
(Both of you roll a d10 - your result is the number of scrolls you manage to grab on your way out.)

To the invisible Milo approaching the doorway - their escape looks clear - for now.

Clegg, regarding Olana with suspicion, runs for the exit with his bag of money. It's almost written on his face that he'll try and escape them all as soon as he possibly can.

Figment  5d6(5+4+3+3+4)=19
Wednesday January 10th, 2001 12:25:28 PM

After closing his pack, hefting it up onto his shoulder and moving to the exit, the mage calls out. "Forget the wizard, he'll get us if he can. Shad, throw the box into the web. That should hold whatever it is long enough for us to get out of here. K'Nara, if you will evacuate I will cast a spell I've been holding in reserve for just such an occasion. It should give the guard plenty to deal with.". He goes down the stairs half way and waits for K'Nara and the others to move out. Then he casts... In an instant and with a loud whooshing sound the room is engulfed in a huge ball of fire.

(NOTE: He does NOT cast if the others don't leave.).

Milo (Invisible)
Wednesday January 10th, 2001 3:54:49 PM

Ahead of everyone else, Milo blazes a trail down into the sewers, looking for any hostiles as he moves quickly along. Once he reaches the bottom of the wooden steps, he stops, turns and waits as patiently as possible for his comrades to catch up.

Ingrge  d10=7
Wednesday January 10th, 2001 6:01:26 PM

Grabbing 7 of the scroll like papers Ingrge heads out the door abd back the way they came. waiting for the others at the bottom of the stairs.

Flueterflam  d10=7
Thursday January 11th, 2001 12:22:52 AM

Fluet grabs seven scrolls and manages to keep them relatively nice while shoving them into his pack. He also takes the extra time to make sure and pick up the notebooks and slip them next to the scrolls. He hurries out of the room hoping that he hasn't been cursed. Once to the stairs, the bard carefully does NOT step on ANY yellow steps.

K'nara
Thursday January 11th, 2001 7:02:13 AM

"Lucia!" K'nara uttered in a hard voice to match the hard look on her face, extinguishing her sword yet again. "All right, mage--it is YOUR decision." Stepping back, K'nara gestured to Dakar to urge him back out of the room. "Go, now, warrior, there's nothing left for us here...Shad--throw the box into the web and let's go..!" As soon as everyone else in the party was out, the human bladesinger left, too, nodding her acquiescence to Figment's intended course of action.

Then K'nara hurried carefully forward to help Olana keep Clegg in line during their escape from the basement.

Olana
Thursday January 11th, 2001 12:05:01 PM

"Not the yellow ones!" calls Olana to Clegg as she follows the rascal out of the room and back down into the sewer, making sure he doesn't get too far away.

Shadrach  d20=13
Thursday January 11th, 2001 12:57:52 PM

(Made Strength check)Shad pushed down on the boxlid. Something sure wanted out. He picked up the box and turned it over, so the lid was on the bottom, then jammed it into the web. Then he finally took to his heels down the stairs, trying to avoid the yellow.

DM Jan (The Wizards House)
Thursday January 11th, 2001 2:21:56 PM

All looks clear to Milo as he waits for the others down below in the sewer. Up above, he can make out the muffled clatter of hooves and general confusion.

Shadrach pushes the struggling box into the web. The bottom of it becomes dislodged and two angry wasps - the size of loaves of bread - emerge - their buzzing silenced as their wings get caught in the web.
"My beauties!!" screams the wizard, obviously most upset, and still fixing K'Nara and Dakar with an evil glare.
As everyone leaves hurriedly via the stairs, Figment's spell goes off, and the entire room is soon alight. The stone rat at the base of the stairs stays immobile.

In Figment's pack are 20 potions.
Fluet carries 7 scrolls and 2 notebooks.
Ingrge carries 7 scrolls.
Clegg has a big sack of gold coins which he is holding like a newborn babe and is regarding both Olana and K'Nara suspiciously.
'Gonna let me go now?' he asks.

Milo (Invisible)  d100=69
Thursday January 11th, 2001 3:03:07 PM

Thinking to scout the way, Milo quietly makes his way up the steps to the shop, making sure to step only on the green ones, and look to see if the coast is clear. Once he has seen, he then makes his way back down the green steps to the cellar, and continues to wait for his comrades.

Figment
Thursday January 11th, 2001 3:40:24 PM

The mage smiles at his spell and mutters rhetorically toward the trap door - which he closes. "So do you like your ribs well done? I hope so you worthless scoundrel.". Getting back into reality, he turns to Clegg, "Do you know another way out of this place? I'm guessing that going back up top here may not be a healthy thing to do. Maybe we should move down this wretched path and see where it leads. And Clegg, leaving our presence now would be foolish with the city guard being so close - even though having you with us is rather dangerous too...".

Flueterflam
Thursday January 11th, 2001 5:33:39 PM

After grabbing the extras, the bard makes sure, no yellow steps are trodded on. He waits at the bottom and yells to everyone coming down, just to be safe, "Make sure you don't step on the yellow ones!!!"

Ingrge
Thursday January 11th, 2001 7:23:03 PM

Calling back over his shoulder, Ingrge yells to Clegg, we might need a bit more information from you so stay close or you will never spend that gold, that you so dearly love.

K'nara
Friday January 12th, 2001 6:58:54 AM

Ignoring Clegg for the moment, K'nara addressed the party's thief:

"Milo...see if any of the city guard above are interested in the bug shop at all." she told him, "See if there's any other exit out of that shop other than right onto the street where the guards are. Be careful!" The female fighter then glanced at Clegg.

"We'd be remiss if we didn't at least see you safely away from the city guards." the redhead said firmly. "There's also the small matter of confirming that the potions we're in possession of are the ones we bargained with you for. A little more patience on your part and we'll have you away from here and on your way to enjoying your...pay." K'nara nodded to the sack that Clegg was clinging so determinedly onto.

Olana
Friday January 12th, 2001 10:57:01 AM

The elf looks at K'Nara.
"He's not going anywhere," she affirms, giving Clegg one of her cheery grins.

DM Jan (The Wizards House)
Friday January 12th, 2001 11:18:57 AM

Up the top of the steps and then inside the shop, Milo gets into a position where he can see outside.
Most of what he can see through the window - is a row of horses arses, lined up with their backs to the shop. Every now and again he catches a glimpse of what lies beyond - guards battling the the stone monster while getting yelled at by their captain on horseback.
There is a lot of milling around, but no one seems to be paying attention to the shop itself.
Then there is a cry of 'It's down!" followed by a large cheer.
Milo also notes that it's starting to get dark outside.

Back down in the cellar, the stone rat that was guarding the underground entrance to the wizards house crumbles to dust.

Clegg looks peevishly at Figment.
"What - you think cos' I'm poor I spend all my time down the sewers? How the heck should I know where anything leads?"
He cuddles his pile of cash, looking at everyone in deep suspicion before adding shiftily - "Down that way - past the steps next to the shop - probably would take you to the garden district."

Figment
Friday January 12th, 2001 12:27:34 PM

The mage smiles at the seedy man "My friend, I would venture to guess that hasty escapes are a normal occurrance for you. As you can see, we are in the sewers too so we are no better than you on that front. Please prepare to lead the way - if our halfling friend does not give us the news we want to hear.". When the rat crumbles, he calls out "The evil mage is dead. His rune spells are released. That means that the guard will not be distracted for long. We'd better leave quickly. K'Nara, I believe a trip down 'memory lane' here would be preferrable to going up top now that the mage is dead. They have nothing to keep them busy any more.".

Milo (Invisible)  d100=28
Friday January 12th, 2001 12:33:50 PM

After coming back down the steps into the cellar, only stepping on the green ones... Milo makes his way quicky to K'nara's side... and then his disembodied voice comes from the silence, "I'm one step ahead of you boss... Okay, here is the deal... there is a line of horses out there, and the city guard just finished taking the stone dogs down... My guess is there trying to break down the front door about now. So... if we're quick, we should be able to get out through the bug shop, with none the wiser... Heck, if we wanted to be daring, we could even swipe their horses... But I'll leave that up to you." The halfling can be heard chuckling softly to himself. (OOC: I'm no thief... I'm a Safe Entry Technician... or Wealth Redistribution Engineer)

Shadrach
Sunday January 14th, 2001 4:01:47 PM

"Stealing horses so the guard can chase us through the streets doesn't sound too sneaky," Shad grumbled.

K'nara
Monday January 15th, 2001 6:21:49 AM

"No, Shadrach, it does not." K'nara agreed rather cheerfully with the mournful bonze, actually slapping him on the back (gently, of course!) "We will exercise the better part of valor today...so it's off to the garden district. Let's go." The woman warrior linked an arm through Clegg's.

"I just HAVE to make sure you stay safe!" she assured the man in a jovial voice.

Olana
Monday January 15th, 2001 10:37:51 AM

Pausing to glance around, wondering where Milo actually was, the elf then had to smile at K'Nara's treatment of Clegg.
Taking out her bow she said, "I'll take the rear and watch our backs. That way they might get the 'point'that we don't want anyone to follow."

Flueterflam

Clegg gives K'Nara a sour smile, but makes no effort to break away from the party.
Those who can see better than others in the gloom see the sewer passage running off in the direction where Clegg pointed.

Up ahead, every so often there is a dim column of light coming from the street grates above, although this seems to be lessening by the minute as darkness approaches.
At one side of the passage is a channel of brackish water, roughly about a foot in depth. The passage is about 7ft high here, but seems to shorten to a height of 5 ft later on.
So far, there is nothing to suggest that the guards above are intent on investigating anything underground.

As the party moves down the passage, the mage offers "I'd say we should wait for complete darkness and then open up one of these grates. Preferrably one which is near our rendevous point so we are not exposed for long. As I recall we need to go to the garden district anyway.".

Milo (Invisible)
Monday January 15th, 2001 7:59:24 PM

As the party begins moving down the passage, Milo takes point about 50 ft ahead of the group giving his eyes a chance to adjust to the relative darkness of the sewer. Being careful to stay out of the water, he proceeds to keep his eyes, and ears open for possible trouble.

K'nara concentrated on her mental map of the city, approximating exactly where the group was in relation to the streets above. (OOC: aced the voluntary Intelligence check.) When she felt they were near enough to where they had to go, the redhead stopped the party's progress.

"Milo, take a quick peek to see if the coast is clear." she said to the halfling. "Need a boost up..?"

The elf keeps alert as they move along, looking behind often to make sure no one was following.
"Mind your head," she says to Fluet as they approach the lowered ceiling.

DM Jan (In The Sewers)
Tuesday January 16th, 2001 11:57:51 AM

The journey through the sewer is without mishap but gradually more and more uncomfortable for those over 5ft tall.
Milo, and those that follow him can hear and sometimes see the goings on in the streets above, but no one seems to be looking down.

As K'Nara stops the party, Clegg gives her a look and makes a somewhat rash gesture of poking her in the ribs.
"You've been down here before, eh? eh?" he asks with a crooked grin. 'I knew you were villains - despite that one's posh clothes. Bet he's the biggest crook of the lot, eh?"
With a nod of his head he gestures toward Figment, although after glancing in Dakar's and Shad's direction, he decides to shut up. For some reason Milo and the elves don't seem to bother him as much.

At this particular grate - all seems quiet.
The grate itself is metal and has algae and moss growing on it.
(Whoever lifts it will need a STR of 11 or above.)

The mage watches while the grate is lifted and waits his turn to exit to the street. He looks on with a bit of distaste as Clegg tries to make himself look better by talking down his comrades.

Milo (Invisible)
Tuesday January 16th, 2001 3:31:26 PM

Still invisible, Milo taps Shadrach to let him know where he is at, and then with the bonze's assistance, climbs up and pushes ever-so-gently on the sewer grating in order to get a peak at what is about.

Wednesday January 17th, 2001 7:37:54 AM

The leader of the Emerald Talons glanced around at the others in the party, eyeing Clegg and then looking expectantly up at Milo...or, rather, at where Milo was supposed to be.

"What's the word, Milo?" she asked in a low voice, starting to get a bit of a crick in her back from having to hunch over her six-foot-tall frame to fit in the tunnel. "Is it all clear..?"

Milo (Invisible)  d100=4
Wednesday January 17th, 2001 6:07:45 PM

Milo heaves a pushes the sewer grate completely off of the hole, and then holding to the lip with one hand he half whispers down to the group, "All is clear, hang on a sec." With that, the burglar grabs the lip with both hands, and giving Shadrach's hands the shake, deftly pulls himself up and out of the sewers. (OOC: 04% on climb roll is a complete success)
Once up and out of the sewer, he quickly looks around for something sturdy to tie a rope too. Once spotted he quietly shouts down to his friends, "Um... do any of you have any rope?"

Dakar
Wednesday January 17th, 2001 8:31:36 PM

The painmonger rouses from his near comatose state. He looks somewhat peevish. "Whenever I walk around a city I tend to bring rope with me, not leave it back at the inn I stay at. Never know if you'll need it. This just happens to be the one time I forgot." No sense of sarcasm can be detected in his voice, he, on the other hand, does seem entirely serious.

K'nara
Thursday January 18th, 2001 6:16:34 AM

"We don't need a rope to get out, Milo..." K'nara replied, "...it's only perhaps five feet to the exit up. If it's clear, then, everybody out--we need to get over to where we're going to break into the prison." The human fighter helped everyone up and out of the sewer.

"Quickly now--we'll just move along until we get where we're going..." K'nara urged, her hand pushing Clegg along with the rest of the party.

Olana
Thursday January 18th, 2001 10:49:29 AM

Olana asks for help out of the hole.
Once out, the elf keeps her eyes on the surroundings in case of possible trouble.
"Should we go back to the Heated Cross?" she asks K'Nara. "Maybe get more information from Clegg? And we acquired some weapons, and things from the wizards house. Maybe they'll help if we can figure out what they are."

DM Jan (Back in the City)
Thursday January 18th, 2001 11:14:00 AM

Figment remembers talking to Cherry back at the Heated Cross, and her mentioning that if all was clear, then she would put a lamp in an upstairs window.

Clegg starts to whine.
'Awwww c'mon let me go. You got what you wanted."

As everyone emerges from the hole, they can all see that they are in the grounds of a small park in the midst of the City.
From the noise and bustle beyond the trees at one end of it - it appears that the park borders on the area where all the hotels and recreation areas are, where most visitors stay.

Figment
Thursday January 18th, 2001 12:00:44 PM

The mage takes his turn extricating himself from the sewer. To Clegg he tries to calm him some. "Don't worry, my friend, we'll let you go soon enough. I doubt you'd do any better being by yourself anyway. I'm sure the guards would like to get their hands on you now even more than before. Besides, if you weren't with us you'd still be losing body parts one at a time. At least now you have a defense if the guards find us.". As they walk back toward the Heated Cross, the mage whispers to K'Nara outside earshot - and hopefully notice - of Clegg. "We cannot let him go before we conduct our assault on the prison. He knows too much and if the guards get him, I'm sure the green one will be involved in the interogation next time - and he would get what he wanted. We'd better leave him with our hosts - or take him with us when we go.".

Shadrach

"Was it the smell that got to you or just being underground?" the dwarf asks the bonze.
"In any case, remind me never to take you into the goblin warrens if a little sewer like that churns your stomach. I'd hate to see the look on your face when you got to the refuse pit lad"

Milo (Invisible)

DM Jan (Back in the City)
Friday January 19th, 2001 11:51:05 AM

The Emerald Talons emerge once more into the City, no doubt accompanied by the pops and cracks of bone joints belonging to those who stand higher than 5ft.
Clegg appears to accept that he's better off with the Talons protection and so shambles along, huggling his sack of money.
It is dark and early evening.
Beyond the park, the City is alive with revelers and street acts hoping to benefit from rich visitors, who can be identified by their better clothes as they stroll about.
On the journey back to the Heated Cross (south east of the park), the following is noted -

A conversation snippet -
"... a 1000 gp to whoever catches them. Can you believe that?... that's more than..."

On one street corner, three street urchins are playing with that looks like a large green beetle, which is spinning on it's back crazily.

Another conversation -
"...aye... going up a storm it is. Rich man's house. Bet it was one of those council lackeys. Bet you can see the smoke if you go to the end of the street..."

Near to the Heated Cross, the streets become painted with shadows and are less traveled. The tavern itself seems lively enough from the outside.

Relieved to hear that their tracks are most likely covered for the time being, the mage strides to the inn and looks up for the appropriate window for the lit lantern. DM Jan (The Heated Cross)
Monday January 22nd, 2001 10:54:46 AM

As the invisible Milo moves into the tavern, he can see quite a few patrons sat around, and Cherry waiting tables.
Nothing looks particularly suspicious.

As for Cherry, as soon as she spots the others, she gives a barely imperceptible nod toward the stairs.
"Why did we come back here?" hisses Clegg. "Why aren't we leaving town?"

Out the back of the tavern, the stable lads are going about their business, and Ingrge and Olana can hear distant cries from people loading boats at the nearby dock. There doesn't appear to be anyone there who shouldn't be.
One of the lads approaches.
"If you're looking for work, I'm sorry but we ain't got anything here. Sorry an' all."

K'nara
Tuesday January 23rd, 2001 7:44:55 AM

Quickly the woman warrior all but hauled Clegg across the crowded tavern area and up to the more private area of the inn, really not stopping until they got to the room they'd started out in. Once there, however, K'nara pushed the whiny paranoid into a chair.

"LOOK--" she started to almost yell, but pressed her lips together and continued in a tight, but less loud, voice: "--you have your money...we need to make sure that WE got we were looking for...AND neither you nor we can afford to attract attention to ourselves by bolting from the city while we are being searched for by the Guard...GOT it?" K'nara sighed.

"Really...I would LOVE to just be gone from this danger zone, too, but the Green Meanie has had several hundred years to develop his security system for the capitol--you still need us if you want to guarantee that you'll live to spend your money."

Something gives Olana the impression that subtlety and subterfuge are not her speciality.
So she keeps her mouth firmly clamped shut and concentrates on acting like an impoverished elf in someones service, keeping her un-tagged parts out of site and leaving the talking to Ingrge.
What he was up to, she didn't know for sure, but she'd wait and see.

DM Jan (The Heated Cross)
Tuesday January 23rd, 2001 11:53:40 AM

Clegg opens his mouth like a fish, but is stopped from uttering a retort to Figment's comment by being hauled off by K'Nara.

Cherry gives a curtsey to Shadrach.
"Yes, sir. I kept your room open, sir. If you'll just let me serve these beers, I'll follow you up with a key."
She places 4 jugs of ale on a table full of patrons and disappears into the kitchen.

Fluet notices a fellow bard in one corner of the Inn, regaling a gathered group with some wild tale that obviously needs a lot of hand gestures.
One man sat alone at a table seems to be looking at Dakar's axe with longing.

At the door to the room upstairs, someone is waiting.
It's Lorna - the cleric of Alemi, who first contacted the party near the elven town of Titania.
She beckons everyone in to the room as they come up the stairs.
"Bless Alemi that you are all safe," she says. "Cherry told me where you had gone - do you have the potions? I say, who's this curious fellow?" She regards Clegg like an inquisitive bird.

Clegg looks astounded at Lorna for a moment, but is stunned into silence once more as K'Nara tells it to him straight.
With an exaggerated sigh, and a roll of his eyes he says -
"Look - I can tell you how to get in - how to get out. Thats all. As for the dragon - no one can beat him. No one. So it's useless to try."
Then he gets a crafty look.
"Hey - what about me and you eh? I like a woman with spirit, an' I'm rich now. Why don't we leave town together - head for new territory? We'd make a good team. How about it, love?"

Milo catches the following -

"... and THEN - as those unfortunate members of Obsidian sit down for dinner, safe in the knowledge that are the most elite force in the City - five HUGE barbarians burst in! Obisidian put up a fight - but one by one - they are TORN - LIMB from LIMB!..."
(Fluet would probably catch the above too, coming from the bard.)

"... d'ya believe all this?"
"Nah.... barbarians. I ain't seen no barbarians. Still, they'd have to be something like that to..."

".. gotta be the work of the Dark One, I reckon"
"Shhh.... don't talk about 'im."

"... much would an axe like that bring? Can you get me a buyer?"

"... fire up town."
"Yeah? Is it still going?"
"Dunno. But patrols are spilling outta the barracks like swarms o' bees."

Outside, around at the stables, the lad regards the two elves.
"Hmmm, lets see. I got room for a wagon, and four horses. Thats about it. Look - if your masters don't take you in at night - it's nothing special round here, but it's clean and dry, and your welcome."

After she is comfortably seated he offers "I'm afraid we have not been terribly covert in our travails this day. I hope it doesn't damage our reason for being here. We have what we believe are the potions and our 'friend' here is the one taken by the guard. We felt it best to keep him with us until we concluded our business here as it would be disastrous if he were retaken. We are ready to continue our efforts after a brief respite - if possible. Of course, with the city guard on alert I'm not sure the best thing to do at this time. Perhaps we can get some intelligence reports from our friends in the city?".

Then turning to Lorna in a most unusual display of humility and reverence, Milo bows down to one knee, and standing, looks her square in the eye, "Mistress Lorna, I wish to speak with you about ALEMI in private at your earliest convenience...I have some questions." Milo holds up the ancient book that he received at the temple, and taps the cover lightly.

For a good ten seconds, the human bladesinger was rendered speechless by Clegg's utter selfishness and ego. Then the proposition he'd made sank deeply into her mind...and the room turns red.

One...two...three... K'nara counted mentally, literally shaking with anger. Fortunately for the oblivious Clegg, the wisdom of her mother's advice to always count to ten before acting on anger won out over the female fighter's considerable impulse to just beat the bloody tar out of the preening man! (OOC: Made my Wisdom check--although I should point out that, had we been operating under 3ed rules, K'nara would have ABYSSMALLY flunked a Diplomacy check! ;D)

"Cleric, it is good to see you again," K'nara turned to Lorna and bowed respectfully, pointedly ignoring Clegg, "We have scrolls that our mages must check, as well as potions that we'd like to discover the purpose of before we complete our appointed task. I also think there may be an item or two that Ingrge needs Identified..?" Here the chestnut-haired warrior looked to her second-in-command, the question on her face obviously referring to the rings that the elf got from their encounter with Obsidian.

Cherry appears at the door with a sack of stuff.
"I kept all this for you," she says. A muffled clank of weaponry is heard as she drops the sack on the floor.
'Maybe what you can't use, you can trade."

"Well hello, young man," says Lorna to Clegg, before giving Figment, K'Nara and Dakar a warm smile. "It is good to see you all too - safe and sound. I think Cherry might be able to help you with intelligence," she adds. "I've only just arrived here myself."
To Milo she says, "Why yes of course! I would welcome a discussion on such a dear subject."

Clegg pulls a face at Dakar but then decides to halt his pitch to K'Nara on seeing the burly figure of Shadrach looking in his direction.

Cherry, on overhearing K'Nara says "I know someone in the City who could probably help with identifying if need be. I've checked with the Innkeeper. You can stay here for a couple of nights providing you don't attract attention. In the meantime I'll find out what I can. All I know for the moment, is that this evening's patrol seems heavier than usual."

Fluet hesitates in the tavern a few moments, and manages to pick up a few do's and don't's while taking a quick study of the other bard's oratory skills.

Outside - the stable lad says to Olana and Ingrge -
"Well - I'd ask your masters first. The kitchen would be warmer, but - if they do pitch you out, you could do worse than sleep here."
The sky is now pitch black as the City heads into late evening.

Inside the sack are -

4 good quality longswords
3 good quality shortswords
Also the following blades, which appear to have some magic about them but will need investigating -
1 schmitar
2 longswords
1 shortsword.

Figment has a ring that exhudes some kind of magic, but the exact properties as yet are unknown.
He also holds 20 "get out of jail free" potions - providing they work.

Ingrge is in possession of 7 scrolls that will need studying by someone with a wizard's training.
Fluet is in possession of 2 scruffy looking, well thumbed notebooks and 7 scrolls - all of which will require a wizard's study to reveal what they are.
Some people have a lot of reading to do.

The ring that held the green eye left the party's possession a while ago.

The mage also nods to Fluet and quietly says "Sure, how about the next open time?". If there is a break between planning, dinner, and visits with Lorna, the mage catches Fluets eye and steps over to a quiet corner somewhere. "So what's on your mind?".

Flueterflam
Wednesday January 24th, 2001 7:36:40 PM

"Well, i just wanted to talk about the stuff I 'found' from his place." Fluet tries not to be too specific in case anyone is listening. "I'm just interested in knowing what's in the notebooks. And maybe if I can try to pick up anything from them. Nothing complicated of course, but just something that may help out in the future." He winks at Figment. "Never know when the smallest thing you never thought you'd use will save your life."

Milo
Wednesday January 24th, 2001 8:43:40 PM

As Figment and Flueterflam step off to one side to talk wizard talk, Milo quickly steps in, and bowing with a flourish of his cloak, pipes up, "Ahem, now seems to be as good a time as any to discuss ALEMI... perhaps in another room? I have questions, and perhaps a request." Milo's indicates the door with a quick nod and a gracious smile.

Ingrge
Wednesday January 24th, 2001 9:59:03 PM

taking a peek in to the barn, (what is in there please. # of horses, etc.)Ingrge thatnks the stable lad and with a nod to Olanna heads back around front and enters the inn.

K'nara  d20=10
Thursday January 25th, 2001 6:16:57 AM

K'nara frowned as she thought over the party options.

"Those guards looking around for us have me a bit concerned," she admitted, "...BUT...I'd rather we go after our...quarry as fully powered as possible. Besides...Olana needs new armor--though I suspect getting elf-sized armor in Emerald City right now is going to arouse suspicion." The human bladesinger tried to use her brain this once, but the solution to getting the elven ranger suitable armor escaped her average intelligence. (OOC: missed the voluntary Intelligence check by one, dang it.)

Olana
Thursday January 25th, 2001 11:18:43 AM

Olana scurried after Ingrge and into the Inn, keeping the lowest of the low profiles, presuming the others were upstairs.
To be honest, she was feeling a bit vulnerable, and would be really happy when this was all over.

DM Jan (The Heated Cross)
Thursday January 25th, 2001 11:40:28 AM

Cherry has managed to secure two rooms for the party, and disappears down to the kitchen to bring up some food.

When she returns, she listens to K'Nara going over the options.
"Hmm.. there's someone in town who can supply the armour, it just might cost a little more thats all. Money does a lot here, because of it's scarcity. What is your plan for tomorrow? I know you have the weapons and armour to investigate. Will you want a look at the prison?"

She then beckons for K'Nara to follow her out of earshot of Clegg.
"What do you want to do with him?" she whispers. "If you get what you need, and someone can knock him out - I might be able to keep him here a little while, but not for long."

Ingrge and Olana enter the tavern. No one shows them the slightest bit of interest, as they are still listening to the bards tale of huge barbarians splattering the elite force of Obsidian.
Down in the barn, Ingrge had noted 4 unsaddled horses and two carts, along with piles of feed and two stablehands playing some kind of card game.

As Fluet and Figment discuss the spellbooks, Lorna the priestess talks to the halfling, Milo.
"Tell you what," she offers. "If you have time tomorrow, lets spend some of it together, and we can discuss what's on your mind. I know the book you carry well."
After spending some time talking to Figment and Dakar, Lorna retires for the night.

Clegg, maybe a little punch drunk from all the money he's carrying decides to get into a stare-off with Shadrach, who towers over him by about a foot.
The night draws in.

Milo
Thursday January 25th, 2001 11:51:06 AM

To Lorna,"Sounds great milady... well, I'll see you in the morning, I'm going to go read some more..." With that, Milo adjourns to the other room where it is more quiet, and after lighting the lamp there, sits quietly and reads the ancient book of ALEMI until well after midnight before retiring for the evening.

Figment
Thursday January 25th, 2001 1:15:12 PM

makes sure the items of interest leave with Cherry for identification. He nods to Fluet and tells hime he'll provide comment of the contents of the notebooks. After a good meal and conversation, he retires for the night after offering to take the last watch of the evening to supervise Clegg.

Ingrge
Thursday January 25th, 2001 6:28:34 PM

walking into the inn, Ingrge looks around, seeing who is in the inn and then looks for someone who might be working here.

Dakar
Thursday January 25th, 2001 7:39:32 PM

Dakar stays seated providing double guard for Clegg. He sleeps in his chair, snoring for a brief time, before waking up to act as double supervision on any necessary watch. Every once in a while he glances back at Clegg and runs his thumb against the sharpened blade of his axe.

Shadrach
Thursday January 25th, 2001 8:17:13 PM

Listening to the conversation around him, Shad waited til Olana showed up. He waved to her. "Here, I want you to try on my armor. It's magical and might shrink to fit you. It can change it's looks to seem to be normal clothes, so if you can wear it, you wouldn't arouse suspicion in the streets."

K'nara
Friday January 26th, 2001 7:37:10 AM

The leader of the Emerald Talons bit her lip as she considered the options...then heard Shadrach offer Olana his magic armor. DOH! Of course that was the answer! Getting human-sized armor for Shad wouldn't be as big a problem as getting anything for an elf would be in Emerald City's current clime!

"We'll start the intended retrieval tomorrow, then," K'nara told Cherry, "I'll talk to Clegg one last time--just to make sure he's told us EVERYthing he can remember...then you should probably use your contacts to get the man out of Emerald City. We do NOT want the Guard nabbing him if we simply let him loose within the city limits."

Going over to each of the other Talons, K'nara tells each one: "We'll start the rescue tomorrow morning--after getting Shadrach some replacement armor. Clegg will be turned over to Cherry and the rest of the Tine network so that they can safely smuggle him out of the city." Then, seeing how Clegg and Shadrach are eyeing each other, some impish impulse causes the female fighter to say out loud:

"Why, you two look like you'd just LOVE to be bunkmates! I know that our resident bonze here will be HAPPY to watch over you as you sleep, Clegg!" Her hazel eyes dance with humor, then K'nara adds: "Fluet can relieve Shad after a couple of hours, then Ingrge can keep watch...and then I'll stand guard for the final couple of hours."

Olana
Friday January 26th, 2001 2:10:52 PM

Olana finds her way back to the others, not cut out for Ingrge's subterfuge and being tagless - better off hidden from general view.
Her faces changes from that of a rather nervous elf to one filled with hope as Shadrach offers his armour.
"Oooooh, thank you, thank you!" she exclaims, giving him a beaming smile. "When we're out of all this mess I'll make it up to you. I can let you have it back and get some of my own."
She tries it on at the earliest opportunity.

Shadrach
Friday January 26th, 2001 2:15:02 PM

For a moment, Shad blushed at the attention. "Aw, I never needed that kind of fancy get-up. I usually wear the same clothes day in day out." He asked K'Nara, "So we're not going to wait to identify the potions exactly?"

DM Jan (The Heated Cross)
Saturday January 27th, 2001 1:43:53 AM

Down in the tavern, the tale ends, and people start to leave for the evening. Ingrge can see a man working behind the bar, but there's no sign of the Innkeeper at this point.

Upstairs, those instructed by K'Nara take their watches over the disgruntled Clegg, doubled up with Dakar, whom Clegg regards grumpily for about half an hour before settling to sleep, and snoring gently.
The night is uneventful.

In the morning, Cherry comes in briefly and asks to borrow Clegg for a short while. As breakfast is sent up - they both re-emerge. Cherry has a supressed smile on her face.
Clegg - much to his obvious disgust - is now dressed as a washerwoman.
He sits down grumpily.
"She says you need to ask me questions," he grumbles. "And if anyone starts laughing, I ain't saying nothing! Now what do you want to know?"

Cherry adds quietly that she has the weapons and the ring to take for examination, and knows somewhere to purchase armour.
To those who check over the scrolls, it looks like it will take about 6 hours to decipher them.

Lorna appears and gives everyone a warm smile, pausing to look at Clegg for a moment, a mystified expression on her face.

Ingrge
Saturday January 27th, 2001 9:59:52 AM

Finally making up to the room, Ingrge looks around at the others and with a nod to K'narra says that he is going to freshen up, get a little rest and then try to figure out the scrolls that they picked up.

After a four hour long resting trance, Ingrge starts pouring over the scrolls trying to decipher each.

Flueterflam

The bard gets comfortable for awhile. He lets himself nod off until he needs to relieve Shad.

Milo
Saturday January 27th, 2001 8:37:44 PM

After a hastily taken warm bath, Milo comes bouncing into the room, sees Clegg... his eyes widen, and he barely manages to hang onto the ancient book of Alemi that he is carrying as both of his hands come up to cover his mouth and stifle the laughter that threatens to bubble out. Then biting his tongue, he turns quickly to Lorna, and bows, "Good lady, would you like to discuss Alemi over a hot breakfast downstairs?" Regaining his composure, he gazes up at the priestess with a look filled with both reverence and deference.

K'nara
Monday January 29th, 2001 6:42:56 AM

The human bladesinger looked abashed at Clegg's petulant statement, though her disappointment was so obvious that it had to have been an affectation.

"Now, Clegg, ol' buddy, you wound me to the heart, you do!" K'nara said chidingly. "What happened to that...sensitive guy who propositioned me so tenderly..?" Here the woman warrior pinched the man's cheek with a smile. "I just want to make sure that you've remembered everything about the jail you miraculously escaped from--it IS rather important to us, you know...why...how in the Wold can we hope for Flueterflam here to get his epic song about you completely correct if I don't go over the facts again..?" Her cauled head nodded towards the bard.

"We will be going the opposite way you did to get out..." K'nara added, "...which means you should tell us where you came OUT of the prison first, then the progress in reverse order from there..."

Flueterflam
Monday January 29th, 2001 11:12:32 AM

"ZZzzZZzzzzzzzzzzz......." Fluet sleeps soundly, stirring slightly at the sound of his name. But he remains sleeping, and appears to mumble audibly enough to know that he IS talking, but the words don't make much sense.

Olana
Monday January 29th, 2001 11:51:48 AM

The elf gets some rest.
On awakening, she checks the armour Shad gave her, making sure it fit, and tested its encumberances. Once satisfied with that, she started to sharpen her weapons and check her arrows. Having noted the haul they acquired from Obsidian - she reckoned one of those long swords wouldn't go amiss either - if it was special.
But then - no doubt they'd find out soon.
With a soft chuckle, she prods Fluet as breakfast arrives.
"You going to eat?" she asks, taking some fruit and bread if there is some.

DM Jan (The Heated Cross - Following Morning)
Monday January 29th, 2001 12:09:12 PM

"Okay - this is what happened," said Clegg, giving K'Nara a glum look.
"The wizard got me caught, and gave me a potion to sneak in with me. he left me to my own devices to get outta the cell. Well - that was easy," he added with a smirk. "It's just a lock. They don't go overboard with locks - the barrier's the thing ya see."

He wiped his nose on his sleeve and continued.
"Anyway. I picked my way out around the time there's a watch change, swigged the potion, an' then slipped out with those who were delivering dinner to the night guard. They have a wizard on the outer gate, who gives the deliverers some kinda temporary charm - doesn't last long tho' - heh, you should see 'em run. I had to run like the wind to keep up."
For a moment, he broke up with laughter before continuing.
"Guards themselves must have something more permanent. One thing I should warn ya. That potion tastes right foul. Had to puke as soon as I got outta sight. Gads, I don't know whats in it - but it don't half make ya feel rotten."

Cherry asks if someone would accompany her with whatever needs identifying.
"Might need some money," she says apologetically.
Lorna nods at Milo's suggestion.
The scrolls and books slowly begin to reveal their secrets to all that can read them.

Flueterflam
Monday January 29th, 2001 3:28:18 PM

Fluet stirs at Olana's prod. With a slight morning smile, he slowly opens his eyes and lets them adjust to the light. Upon hearing Cherry ask for assistance, "I'll go." Then the bard yawns loudly. "If no one else wants to that is." The bard proceeds to look around for food.

Milo
Monday January 29th, 2001 3:54:29 PM

"Excuse me... " Milo apologizes as he steps away from Lorna just long enough to fish a pouch, from some unseen location on his person, and retrieve what look to be five jade cut in the shape of crescent moons from it. He smiles at Cherry, "Here sweetie... these should cover the expenses... or at least part of 'em," and he drops the five jade (50 gp each) into her hand. He then turns back to Lorna and quietly escorts the priestess downstairs where they sit with warm bread and tea, and discuss Alemi. Milo asks question after question, with one answer leading to three or more questions, frequently referring back to the book he is carrying. In the end though, all his questions seem to boil down to one... "Um, Lorna, could you teach me how to pray to Alemi." Milo looks surprised to hear the words come from his own mouth, but once said, his face seems to radiate peace.

Monday January 29th, 2001 4:53:45 PM

The mage pays any additional moneys Cherry thinks she needs and after speaking with Lorna heads to bed. Upon his watch, he replentishes his spells and then carefully studies the scrolls and notebooks, noting whatever secrets they reveal (Int by 9).

Shadrach
Monday January 29th, 2001 5:58:36 PM

Shad asked Cherry where he could get human-sized chain mail quickly. He also offered to go with her if she needed lots more money.

Ingrge
Monday January 29th, 2001 6:43:39 PM

Having studied a batch of scrolls through the night, Ingrge plops down next to Figment, So I guess we ought to compare what we have in order to see how we can best aid ourselves and the group. That and when you have a spare moment I now have a copy of thet Dispel magic spell of yours, you had to ruin for Olanna.

K'nara
Tuesday January 30th, 2001 6:58:42 AM

"Oh...just swell. We have to sneak in AND out of the prison from that one access point, hmmm?" the human bladesinger frowned. "Okay...anybody here have any suggestions on how we can manage that? It looks to me that we'd probably have to do practically the same thing as Clegg did--get ourselves arrested and then bust out of the prison during a watch change..."

Olana
Tuesday January 30th, 2001 10:58:02 AM

"Maybe we should take a look at the place," offers the elf, " and see what we're up against. There might be other ways - or we might be able to sneak in, or something." Looking at Ingrge and Figment - busy with the scrolls, and seeing that Milo had gone down to breakfast, she adds - "They're busy. Shad's got to get some armour, and him and Fluet were going with Cherry, aren't they? Maybe the rest of us could do a quick recon and meet up later."

DM Jan (The Heated Cross)
Tuesday January 30th, 2001 11:54:49 AM

Cherry looks relieved as Fluet and Shadrach offer to accompany her, and thanks the others for the cash.
"It's not too far - but it's not in exactly the best part of town," she says. "I suppose the sooner we get there, the sooner we're done."
She picks up a bundle that contains the ring, and the weapons, and sets off.

"In order to pray, all you have to do is open your heart, and Alemi will be listening," says Lorna to Milo at breakfast. She talks with him at length about the book, and her own personal theological journeys.

So far, the mages have been able to determine the following -
One of the books carries instructions on how to improve memory and logic, with a magical effect.
2 second level arcane 'summon swarm' scrolls.
1 third level arcane 'summon monster 111' scroll.

"What about me?" wails Clegg.

Figment  d20=9
Tuesday January 30th, 2001 12:01:06 PM

The mage continues to look at the notebook regarding intelligence and memory. After a time he tears himself away, compares notes with Ingrge, and looks at the other scrolls. He continues until they have them all analysed.

Milo
Tuesday January 30th, 2001 12:32:38 PM

With a look of simple awe on his face, "You mean all I have to do is say something and really mean it? Okay then..." Placing his hands in his lap, Milo closes his eyes and concentrates on relaxing his entire being. Again, fishing that same pouch from some unseen place on his person, he deftly opens the pouch, and pulls a ruby from its interior. Holding it between him and Lorna so no one else can see, he rubs it between his thumb and forefinger. And then, in nearly a whisper, so that only Lorna can hear him, "Alemi... please watch over me and my friends as we try to right a wrong that has been done to a good person... you know who I mean... and please help my friends to not be too hasty, or noisy, while we're doing it..." That said, Milo looks up at Lorna with a serene smile on his face... "Like that?" Then remembering where he is, he quickly drops the ruby back into his pouch, and after sealling the container, makes it disappear.

Ingrge
Tuesday January 30th, 2001 6:48:39 PM

listening with a quarter of an ear to what their fearless leader is saying, Ingrge comments. "well before you all decided to go and butcher all the Obsidian guards I actually had a plan but since we don't have any usable uniforms.....

As Clegg whines yet again, Ingrge looks up sharply and says, "Well, I am sure I can find a farmer out there who would like to have a good time with a new skirt."

Dakar
Wednesday January 31st, 2001 1:58:04 AM

"Well Ingre, next time I'll try not to cut the cloth when I cut the flesh. I dinna know that the uniforms were needed so severely." Dakar says to Ingre, his voice without a hint of sarcasm. He picks up his warhammer.
"That's what the blunt end is for."

K'nara
Wednesday January 31st, 2001 7:20:02 AM

The leader of the Emerald Talons eyed Ingrge and Dakar, half a smile on her face at the dwarf's dour sarcasm.

"He's gotcha there, Ingrge." she said, winking at the elf. "And I think Olana has an idea...as long as we're waiting for Fluet & Shad to get back from ID'ing them items, Milo and I could go check out the prison site and brainstorm something when we get back to here. What d'you say, Milo..?"

Shadrach
Wednesday January 31st, 2001 9:19:12 AM

He shook his head. "Try to run when you get into trouble today." He left with Olana.

She sighs. "I'll stay here for now. I won't risk everyone till we're ready to do this."

DM Jan ( Out and About)
Wednesday January 31st, 2001 12:41:28 PM

((OOC - all treasure listed is 3rd Edn compatible))

Eventually, Ingrge and Figment manage to figure out what all the paperwork means, and realise the party has acquired the following -

The two scruffy notebooks - though fairly light - contain pages heavy with very very tiny spidery script, which is difficult to read.
They are Tomes of Clear Thought and will take about 48 hours solid reading to get through. There is magic interlaced in the pages, beginning to fade as the pages are read, and it is estimated the magic could well disappear after 6 days. At this point there is no indication of the actual measure of benefit that is likely to be gained.
The scrolls are -
1 Summon Monster Lvl 3
3 Summon Swarm Lvl 2
2 Fog Cloud Lvl 2
1 Whispering Wind lvl 2
1 Major Image Lvl 3
3 Spider Climb Lvl 1
2 Glitterdust Lvl 2
1 Charm Monster Lvl 4

Cherry sets off with Shadrach and Fluet, heading south in the general direction of The Stinking Hole, turning off a couple of streets away, not far from where their horses are stabled.
There - is a blacksmith, and clanging sounds can be heard from the yard. Inside - are two human men with biceps like tree trunks working on anvils, and a couple of elves shoveling coal for the fires.
Another man, in a scruffy green robe approaches.
Cherry talks to him quickly, and he takes the items from her hands.
He points over to a small enclave where various pieces of armour are displayed.
"I have armour for sale over there," he announces to Shadrach before disappearing through a door. "I have some decent chain at 150 if yer interested."
About an hour later he reappears looking a little tired, but with a definite gleam in his eye.
"Oooh, lets see," he says rubbing his hands, and placing the scmitar, 2 shortswords, and the two longswords on the table.
"6 items... hmm... thats gonna cost ya 350 gp. I can do you a deal and take the 6 non magical weapons off your hands for 30gp. That means a cost of 320 gp."
"Now see the scimitar? Look at the handle. Specially designed for throwing that is..."
He describes the weapons -

Scimitar of Throwing +2 (can become a ranged weapon within 10 feet)
Longsword +2
Longsword +2
Shortsword +2
Shortsword +2

Then he scratches his chin.
"As for the ring, hmmmm.... well - it's just a Ring Spell Turning. Magic isnt used much in this town, so it's probably not worth much to you. Tell you what!" he beams. "I'm a generous man. If you let me have the ring - I'll not charge you for the rest of the stuff. I'll even throw in some chain mail for free! How about that?"

K'nara and whoever decides to go with her, head off toward the jail, which is - as K'Nara remembers, east of their position across town - not far from the Council Palace.
The streets are busy, and it is late morning when they arrive.
There is a Guardhouse next to a bridge over a dry moat, and then the main gate. The moat looks about 30 feet deep, and there is a strange shimmer over the place.
This doesn't seem to be stopping some children playing nearby.
At lunchtime, two delivery men arrive with baskets at the gatehouse.

Figment
Wednesday January 31st, 2001 5:55:29 PM

The mage is taken aback by the discovery of the tomes. "My goodness, Ingrge. I must have one of these. They will increase our ability to cast. I wish we would have taken some more time to gather more magic from this guys place. I bet we would have really found some amazing things. I'm totally shocked that he was so easy to take down...". The mage prepares the list of information and gives it to K'Nara when she returns.

Ingrge
Wednesday January 31st, 2001 6:25:54 PM

My My, What a find is right. since te books are written for mages I suspect that we each should take one to read. I think we should eventually try to get some of these scrolls written down in our books to add to our potential arsenal, but I guess we should wait till the boss shows back up.

After checking with Milo to see if he was available to go with her to case the prison, K'nara made her way to the location and skulked about accordingly. (OOC: made the Hide in Shadows roll easily) She spent most of her time trying to see if there was anything particularly out-of-the-ordinary that the group could use to their advantage, but the only thing that happened was the lunchtime delivery. (OOC: didn't make the voluntary Perception check.)

"Hmmm...let's see who's the lucky chef that gets the prison concession..." she mused, following the pair of delivery people when they came back out of the jail. Maybe the establishment that provided the vittles would be willing to "rent out" the task of delivery to the Emerald Talons...

As K'nara drops by his table on the way out, Milo looks to Lorna briefly, "I'm sorry, I have to go take care of business as it were, though I'd like to discuss the responsibilities of Alemi's clergy later on perhaps..." With that Milo gives a short nod to K'nara, and falls in beside his friend... on her reconnaisance of the prison. (OOC: Attempted to hide with K'nara unsuccessfully, though I aced my perception check.)

Olana
Thursday February 1st, 2001 7:20:35 PM

The elf stays behind along with the mages, and gets in some sword practice while wearing the new armour.

Shadrach
Thursday February 1st, 2001 11:55:58 PM

Shad snorted at the blacksmith's deal. "We'll keep you in mind, but there's a lady who'll hit us with the flat of her blade if we sold magic without consulting her. I'll take the chain mail, though." He slipped his hand into his sash and pulled out some fine pearls (100gp ea). "These ought to cover my armor."

DM Jan (Out and About)
Friday February 2nd, 2001 2:43:26 AM

Olana, Ingrge and Figment stay back at base.

After a bit of haggling at the blacksmiths - Cherry, Fluet and Shadrach manage to pay for the magic items and the chain mail with three of Shad's pearls, and those things Milo gave to Cherry.

Out at the prison -
Just down the road are various baker's and food vendor's kitchens. It's chaos with steam, ovens, boiling water and people in cooks hats and aprons - running in and out of one building and into another.
There are good smells and bad smells - as scents of food and kitchen refuse combine.
There's a laundry too, where an elf can be seen carrying sacks from the kitchens.
Their proximity suggest that perhaps these places serve both the prison and the palace beyond.

K'nara
Friday February 2nd, 2001 6:11:59 AM

Frowning, K'nara looked specifically for the people who had delivered the food to the prison, intending to ask them who ran the food vendor's. Once she found out who was in charge, she'd see about whether the Talons could pinch-hit as personnel for the dinnertime delivery.

The mage finishes replentishing his spells and re-examines the potions more carefully to make sure they are identical in consistency and ingredients (20+4+4=28 DC). "Ingrge, I'd say we better get this done and out of the city so we can take advantage of these tomes. Looks like they'll not last too long now that we've begun to read them.". He reports his findings on the potions to the others and prepares his equipment for the infiltration.

After making sure Clegg is out of earshot, he talks to Cherry. "Once we have secured our quarry, where do we take him? Out of town or somewhere else?".

NOTE: I intend to begin using #rd Ed rules on all checks and "non-combat" rolls. Is this OK?
