No Room at the Inn

The Frosted Glass
Tuesday January 30th, 2001 2:38:20 PM

The ferryman seems happy enough to take foreign currency. He wants 9 gold coins to take the six people and 3 horses across the river. Several other passengers join you on the barge-like ferry, which moves smoothly across the current at a command word from its master, who stands with both hands on the tiller. He cheerily provides simple directions to the Frosted Glass before leaving you on the South shore.

A short trip through Labour Town brings you to the Southook cityscape. It's fantastical spires and elegant architecture put Northook to shame. 'Opulent' doesn't begin to describe it. The richly dressed residents appear casual about the luxury surrounding them.

The Frosted Glass stands on a busy side street some distance from the river. Fluted columns support a fancy portico. The neighbouring structure, with its tall, wide doors, is so elaborate that it takes a few moments to recognize it as a commercial stables.

Sly Foxx and Luke
Tuesday January 30th, 2001 4:51:22 PM

Sly rides with Trace until they get on the barge-like ferry. While they were sailing ever so smoothly, Sly went to stand next to Trace and asked him,"Tell me, Big Brother, Can that beautiful bird of yours Do that trick with any object you want? Or Just he can just fetch the knife? You know that trick can come in handy some day?"
When they dock, Sly at the beauty of Southhook. Sly followed behind every body, he even trip over Loc once. "that's right Loc, I'm hungry too." Sly looked at the sign {the FROSTED GLASS}"Why do I have to go with all of you to the stable? I really hungry..."

Sir Thomas
Tuesday January 30th, 2001 5:09:08 PM

"I understand your desire to peek into the purse Ilsidur, and I hadn't realized it had been in our possession for so long. who's bag did it come from?" Whent he answer to his question comes Thomas gives the purse to that person. "If it was given to anyone or all of us at all, it was more intended for you. You do as you wish with it. I feel that we should return it to the gate guards though. I am with you 100% on your decision though." Thomas bows out of the argument graciously and supports the owner's decision no matter what it is.

Lok Mufflefoot
Tuesday January 30th, 2001 9:53:45 PM

Lok enjoys the ferry ride greatly and it is obvious that the halfling take pure pleasure from even the merest thing. Seeing the discussion of the pouch start up again he whispers through the corners of his mouth as if it were the wind saying it "I bet there's something really really fantabulous in there that would fit nicely into a halfling's pocket. Could be the only person that could handle such a thing. Let the halfling open it... Let the halfling open it..."

Trace and Radiant in Hook City
Tuesday January 30th, 2001 10:12:18 PM

Trace listens to the discussion on the magic item again and starts to grind his teeth while hearing Sir Thomas back down. "Well If I am out voted on the idea that we dont tempt fait and return the package then I want to go on record right here and now that nothing good will come from opening it and I want to be a good distance from it when and IF you do. I also want you to know that this is just driveing me insane watching this happen. It is not a logical thing to do and when you take chances, eventually you will pay twice what ever you gain." It is obvious that Trace is tormented with the acitons going on but is just as clear that he will no longer physically step in the way. Trace turns to Sly, "Well Radiant has fetched a coin purse and a dagger so far so I am sure he will fetch what ever I ask him to. He is a very smart bird and has shown to be very loyal. I would even go as far as saying that I consider him family now. In the past few months me and Radaint have grown closer together and I am sure there is nothing that we woulndt do for each other. Do you feel the same about Luke?"

Uteva
Wednesday January 31st, 2001 12:27:52 PM

Teva pays their ferry passage, and listens avidly to the conversation. "The guard found it in here, Sir Thomas." She stabs her finger toward the burlap sack bundled onto the mare. "It's a sack of feed that Alyndar purchased for us back at the trade caravan."

"Trace, have you still got Maurice's letter? Why don't you guys go on inside? Order me some supper, and I'll get the horses settled." She takes Cammaron's reins, then pauses. "I think Lok is just the person to help me. I don't want you getting too close to that magical package."

Ilsidur
Wednesday January 31st, 2001 1:06:47 PM

As they enter the Frosted Glass, Ilsidur says, "OK, here's what I'll do, if it's OK. When we get inside, I will take a guest room, go into the room and open the package. If anyone wants to join me, you are welcome. If no-one comes, I will go alone. If I don't come back to the common room in five minutes, you will know that something is stopping me from returning, and I would appreciate your looking in on me. Trace has a good point, hope for the best but plan for the worst. I have a few spells that I will cast on myself that will help if opening the package has any negative consequences. What do you think?"

Assuming everything goes as planned, Ilsidur will head to the guest room. Once inside, he will cast resistance, guidance, bless and aid on himself and open the package.

The Frosted Glass (DM Lee-Anne)
Wednesday January 31st, 2001 1:26:51 PM

In contrast to the busy street, the interior of the Frosted Glass is calm, reserved, and elegant. Gentle dulcimer music drifts across a room rich with polished thrumwood and deep burgundy trim. To one side, a long, gleaming bar topped with beige marble is surrounded by cozy groupings of stuffed chairs. The rest of the room is filled with elaborately appointed tables set for dining. Patrons fill the seats, speaking in polite murmuring tones. Delicious aromas fill the air.

A tall man wearing carefully tailored dark trousers and a snowy tunic greets you in the foyer. "Welcome to the Frosted Glass." His deep voice belies his spare frame. "Under what name is your reservation, please?" He moves to check the large book that lies open on a simple podium.

Inside the stables, grooms hurry to take charge of the horses, shooing Uteva and her companion toward the tavern. A pair of burly porters offer to watch the group's supplies during dinner.

Lok Mufflefoot
Wednesday January 31st, 2001 1:56:12 PM

Lok twitches his ears at the notion of the group splitting up for this occasion. The halfling seems to perk at the idea of the inn. Following Ilsidur he says happily "When we get back I will entertain this inn for you!." Having the itch to perform the halfling begins twirling the three silver balls in his hand and wanting the opening to be over with so he could get on to some real entertainment. Looking at the package however the halfling becomes increasingly curious once more. He tries to peek over Ilsidur's shoulder at every point and an occasional halfling hand finds it's way far too near for the dwarf's comfort.

Sly Foxx and Luke
Wednesday January 31st, 2001 4:22:14 PM

Sly look at the Inn and then back at Uteva, "I love to help you,Uteva, BUT i's so hungry that I'm going to faint in a few minutes. Look I'm loseing weight." As sly pull the front of his baggy shirt out. Sly follows the rest of the group in to the inn.
As Sly enters, walks next to Trace, and smells the delicious air. Sly knees buckle and he almost falls if it was not for Trace holding him up. In a week voice, tells Ilsdur, "I'll be right with you after I have something to eat."

Trace and Radiant
Wednesday January 31st, 2001 4:56:00 PM

Trace steadies Sly and only shakes his head but then straitens when the man ask for our resevations. "Yes sir, we are here to see a man named Maurice. A new found friend sent us this way and said he would be here. Tell him we have a letter for him." Turning back to others, "I guess we will eat after we meet with this Maurice."

Ilsidur
Wednesday January 31st, 2001 6:06:02 PM

Ilsidur follows Trace and poor, fainting Sly into the inn. He takes one look around and mumbles, "Oh, great. Another elf-influenced wimpy bar. We definitely need to find a place with some action. I bet they don't even have beer here, just that sweet mead stuff."

He slaps Lok's hand away from the parcel for the fourth time. "Lok, keep your hands to yourself. We'll have a look at this parcel after we talk to Maurice and have some supper. Look at poor Sly over there. It must be three or four hours since she has had a meal, and is about to waste away. Listen, what say once we have had dinner and figure out what is in the parcel, we go and find a real bar. Dulcimer music and polite conversation screw up my digestion, and I know I'll need a good dwarven ale before I go to bed tonight."

Then he steps up to the tall man and says, "Good Sir, we will also need rooms for the night, if you could set us up."

Sir Thomas
Wednesday January 31st, 2001 9:11:38 PM

Thomas follows the crowd for the most part as they near the inn and enter. He goes with Uteva to take CAmmaron to the stable so she won't have to go alone. He then enters and while they wait he calls for a group vote. "For me opening the package is not about safety. I think we can handle that part assuming that it isn't trapped with a fireball. I am hung up on the fact that I don't think opening the package is the right thing to do. So I say we vote. All in favor of opening the package speak up." Thomas allows all the "ya"s to be heard and then continues. "I am against it and obviously Trace is against it. SO the vote comes out to . . . "

Ilsidur
Wednesday January 31st, 2001 10:15:43 PM

Just as obviously, Ilsidur votes to open it.

Uteva
Thursday February 1st, 2001 1:10:51 PM

Teva follows Sir Thomas into the Frosted Glass. "I'm for opening it," she tells him.

Muttering, "This is a tavern?" she pushes her way to the front of the group. "Actually, sir, we have a letter from Maurice. We'd like to give it to Sieur Alphais, please."

The Maitre d' (DM Lee-Anne)
Thursday February 1st, 2001 1:27:23 PM

The man's face assumes an expression of deepest grief as Trace mentions Maurice, quickly transforming to hope at Uteva's words.

"You have word of Maurice?" The maitre d's voice climbs an octave, and he cracks a tentative smile. "But this is wonderful! Please, come and sit." The man gestures with one hand for everyone to follow him. With the other, he snaps his fingers. A swarm of waiters converge in one corner of the room, efficiently clearing and setting a large table. They leave as quickly as they had come, and the maitre d' leads the party toward the table.

"Sieur Alphais is away right now, organizing the search effort for his nephew. We were so worried when we heard that he was overdue. Please, may I see this letter?"

The large table is set with crystal and silver, and draped in burgundy linens. Candles glow from a pair of tasteful centerpieces, and from a coloured glass wall fixture. The burnished thrumwood chairs have tasseled seat cushions.

Lok Mufflefoot
Thursday February 1st, 2001 2:56:35 PM

"We helped him" the halfling says happily as he plops into one of the chairs and starts swinging his legs freely. Noticing the tassels he suddenly disapears under the table as he starts twirling them. Coming back up he notices that the chair is not high enough that he can sufficiently see over the table, so he pulls his legs up under him and grins foolishly.

Sly Foxx and Luke
Thursday February 1st, 2001 5:05:38 PM

As Sly is led to their table, "mumble Mumble package," said the half elf. On this table there's this fancy bedsheet, with fancy handkerchiefs, fancy glasses on pedestals, small pitch forks and the dullest knives he's ever seen. Sly looks down and he is sitting on a very soft pillow, with small beards on the ends. * I wonder if these are our sheet and pillow for the night? * Sly ask himself. He saw that Luke was settling down at his feet, when he saw that Loc was having trouble reaching the table. Sly bends over and tells Loc, "Why don't you put my backpack on the chair and put the fancy saddle on top, then maybe you'll see what your eating?"

Sir Thomas
Thursday February 1st, 2001 9:51:28 PM

Thomas sits and waits patiently for the vote to conclude. He also lets those, like Uteva and Trace, that seem to know more about the situation, due to better attention to detail than Thomas, take the riens in dealing with the maitre'd. The count stands at 3 for open it and 2 for not with Sly being the only uncounted vote. Thomas sincerely hopes that they don't come to another head because of a tie vote, but he also hopes that they don't open the package. He's absolutely torn.

Ilsidur
Friday February 2nd, 2001 1:00:14 PM

Ilsidur pulls himself up onto the cushioned chair, and peers over the edge at the rest of the group. "Clearly, they didn't design this furniture with people like us in mind, Lok. Let's see if we can still get some good beer." Then he waits while the maitre d' looks over the letter, and orders a Mountainhome Dark. "Let's see what their beer cellar holds," he whispers to Lok.

If Sly does not speak up, Ilsidur assumes the vote goes as follows: 3 for opening, 2 against and 1 abstention.

Uteva
Friday February 2nd, 2001 1:16:19 PM

Teva slips past the Dwarf and seats her self, whispering, "Relax, Ilsidur, and enjoy the atmosphere. Didn't you say that Marmathon Dur encourages new experiences?" She grins impishly at him and turns to the waiter.

"We met Maurice on the Trade Road a few days north of here. He'd been delayed, but when we left him he was on his way to Threshold. Trace here has the letter." Under the table, she nudges the ranger with the toe of her boot.

The Maitre d' (DM Lee-Anne)
Friday February 2nd, 2001 1:32:56 PM

The tall waiter catches the comments from Sly and Ilsidur. With another snap of his fingers, two waiter appear with seats designed to accomodate a dwarf and a halfling, though they are decorated like the others. "My apologies, gentlemen. Your news has unbalanced my concentration. I hope you will find these more comfortable." He waves one of the waiters back. "We have the Mountainhome, of course, and Pannes here will handle your orders." Brows raised, he faces Trace, clearly waiting on the letter.

Dressed like the others in black and white, young Pannes' Adam's apple bobs wildly when he speaks. "Speak your pleasure tonight, sieurs and madam."

Trace and Radiant
Friday February 2nd, 2001 7:37:33 PM

"Yes sir I have the letter and I hope I am not to brash about this but he did say to give it to his Uncle so I would not feel right in giving it to you until his uncle agreed. I am sure you understand my situation." Trace shows a calm face while he sits at the table.

Sly Foxx and Luke
Friday February 2nd, 2001 7:59:03 PM

Sly is so hungry, that he's hearing voices of his missing mother. ~Have you forgotten you manners? Sly. No mater how hungry you get, you will sit up strait, put you handkerchief on you lap, when served you will not gulp your food, you will eat slowly, with your fork and no picking up the peas with the knife. AND don't forget a doggie bag for Luke..~ Sly wishers to himself 'Yes, Mother.' Sly turns to Trace and thanks him for the help. " I must be stronger, to be a good fighter. I must have more disaplain like you and Sir Thomas."

Sir Thomas
Friday February 2nd, 2001 8:57:54 PM

With many things running through his mind, Thomas rolls his eyes at Trace. Very calmly he offers some advice to Trace, "Trace, the maitre'd," turning to the maitre'd, "I'm sorry sir I have missed your name," and then back to Trace, "has already explained that Sir Alphais is unavailable at the present time. Personally, I see no harm in showing the letter to this gentleman." Having said that Thomas moves to the next item on his personal agenda. "Since Sly has obviously abstained, his vote will not count and Ilsidur you may open the package. Where you perform the action, here or in private, makes no difference to me, but Trace has expressed his wish not to be around at the unveiling. Be careful my friend." Thomas slides the package over to Ilsidur.

Having spoken his mind about both of the things he wanted to cover Thomas lightens his mood a bit, but he does not shirk the 'cloak' of his knighthood. He still sits proudly and politely erect at the table. "It is good to be in the midst of good company tonight my friends. Cheers to you all. Uteva, I believe that it is your turn to order. Ladies first, I'm sure you understand." When Uteva orders Thomas will wait his turn and order something delicious, but reasonably priced. "Good sir Pannes, along with my meal I would care to have a single glass of wine and a lot of water. Wine is good for joyous occasions such as this, relaxing, and it is good for the heart. And water is excellent to quench the thirst." Thomas smiles broadly knowing that he has offered WAY too much information. He is in a good mood despite feeling as though something is missing in his life. Thomas sits quietly, only engaging in the conversation of the table, and wonders why he carrys such a heavy heart lately.

Ilsidur
Friday February 2nd, 2001 11:51:53 PM

Ilsidur is pleasantly surprised when the maitre d' brings the dwarf-sized chair and the assurance that he can get his favourite beer. "Good sir, it's rare that a place as classy as this would cater to dwarves. Hopefully the music and the conversation livens up a little later in the evening. How about it, Uteva?"

He sternly accepts the parcel from Sir Thomas, then looks at Trace and the young paladin, "Friends, I can accept that you are concerned about the package, even if I can't understand the source of your worry. I will be careful, and I am sure that Marmathon Dur will watch over me." Then he looks over to Lok, and says, "Are you coming? I might even let you hold it, whatever it is."

Then he and Lok (if he's coming), move over to a quiet corner booth well away from the party, but within sight. Once there, Ilsidur unwraps the fateful package.

Lok Mufflefoot
Saturday February 3rd, 2001 3:06:52 AM

The halfling's eyes light up as a "normal" sized chair appears. Smiling he says "I'll have what the dwarf is having. I was weak last time we went a carrousing, but that was just because I was under the weather." Then listening carefully to Ilsidur he smiles and wiggles his fingers in anticipation. "Maybe I should open it Ilsidur, perhaps it's trapped. And you never know, that extremely valuable diamond I once lost might be in here, or one of many other possessions I misplaced." It is dubious from the manner of his statment whether any actual lost posessions were more than a halflings misconstrued notion of "ownership". As halflings go though, that was about normal.

Uteva
Monday February 5th, 2001 12:01:40 PM

Teva grins at Sir Thomas and addresses Pannes. "What's good tonight?"

While listening to the answer, she leans toward the ranger, touching his hand. "Trace, be reasonable. We showed the letter willingly enough at the gate. I'm sure this gentleman has more right to its message than the Customs folk."

To Ilsidur, she says, "I'll be happy to oblige you, once I've filled my belly. And since I voted to open the package, I should bear some of the risk. If you gentlemen will excuse me?" Teva leaves her place to follow Ilsidur.

DM Lee-Anne
Monday February 5th, 2001 12:08:25 PM

In answer to the paladin's question, the maitre d' bows. "I am Riguo, manager of the Frosted Glass, and I would like to send word to Sieur Alphais as soon as possible. Please, ease an old man's heart. My employer loves his nephew, and he is frantic with worry."

"One moment, madame." Pannes disappears, returning to set a foaming glass mug, dark with brew, in front of Ilsidur. The glass is chill to the touch. He passes out a pair of thin wooden placcards, magically inscribed with the evening's menu. Each reads:

Fall mushrooms stuffed with lime and peppers
Roast carrot and courgette soup
Painted crab bisque

Sargassi Samba
Pasta tossed with lamb and garlic
Fried eel

Fennel-stuffed quail with cream sauce
Grilled sirloin and vegetables
Salmon filet in orange sauce
Baked tongue

"May I recommend the quail?" he says, while pouring water for each of you from a tall fluted carafe. "Chef has outdone herself with the sauce tonight. Of course, we can make up anything you desire. Shall I bring wine appropriate to your selections?"

The Package (DM Lee-Anne)
Monday February 5th, 2001 12:43:39 PM

The room being crowded, Ilsidur finds a safe spot behind the nearby tall wood and marble partition that blocks the view of the room from the privy door. The lacings come smoothly undone, and the leather wrapping falls open to reveal what appears to be a deck of playing cards. The top card shows a detailed drawing of a middle-aged half-elf with a short, wild mop of curly blond hair and a direct blue gaze. He is dressed like any of the folk seen in Labour Town.

Trace and Radiant in Hook City
Monday February 5th, 2001 3:44:56 PM

"Fine, I guess I am just too jumpy and over cautios with all that has happened today." Trace hands over the letter reluctantly since yet again he has been out voted. Leaning back to Uteva, "My darling, the custom folk would doubtfully have anything to do with this letter. So to show them would be no harm but to show someone that has direct dealing with the two people that the letter involves I belive should show some discression. Even though we dont know this man from adam and he could even be someone that had something to do with that man getting caught by the orcs or he could simply be a friend. My simple point is that we dont know. Ahgggg! Enough complaing." Trace speaks up to the waiter so that he can order, "Sir, I would like to have the quail and please bring me a bottle of a subital wine to go with that along with some smoked cheese and bread. Oh and could you bring some fish that has not been cooked yet for my friend her" pointing at Radiant. Jokeingly said to Sir Thomas, "Sir Tom, the next time you roll your allmighty paladin eyes at me, I will see fit that you will be rolling on the floor."

Sir Thomas
Monday February 5th, 2001 4:28:57 PM

Thomas goes along with what the waiter suggests and orders the quail. He then very calmly replies to Trace, "Well elf, I don't know when you developed a chip on your shoulder, but you are developing into quite a bully with your sharp tongue. You used to have at least decent manners, but lately you have been no better than a brutish ogre. I'm sure that your comments toward the waiter were uncalled for in his presence and call for an apology. I"m sure that your action against Ilsidur without cause to be so physical deserved an apology that never escaped your tight lips. And finally, I'm quite sure that your challenge toward me is unprovoked, undeserved, and unwarranted. I'm sure that if you choose to continue acting like an ignorant brute we can treat you like one, but we would prefer it if you would simply treat us with the same respect that we considerately give to you. Please only consider this as an attempt to enlighten you about how I feel about your recent behavior, and to let you know that if you feel that I am acting high and mighty that it is only because I have grown to embody the code that I live by, the code of Alemi, while you have digressed from the code that you used to uphold." Thomas does not bat an eyelash, raise his voice, fidget, or give any outward sign that he was thoroughly offended by the comment other than his face turning quite red during his long-winded reply. With a final little edge Thomas reveals some immaturity of his own, "Did you understand all of the big words or should I have Radiant explain them to you?"

Ilsidur
Monday February 5th, 2001 6:47:43 PM

Ilsidur shows the card to Lok and Uteva, slapping Lok's hand away when he reaches for the card (as he expects Lok to do). "Lok, no insult intended, but I think we had better keep this set together, don't you think? Not that one might disappear if you took it, but you never know what accidents can happen."

He turns over a few other cards, to see if they show the same general information, and casts detect magic on the cards, the wrapping and the cord, to determine specifically what was detected as magic. Once Ilsidur has figured this out, he passes the deck over to Uteva. "Have you ever seen anything like this before? I wonder if they are some kind of summoning items?"

Trace and Radiant in Hook City
Monday February 5th, 2001 10:50:45 PM

"Why ever so observant Sir Tom. I might be a bit brash a bit here late but at least my comments are for what I feel like are the good of the group not for some supreem being. And yes you are correct that there has been no apology to anyone since my movements were not to be a brute but to protect our intrest. Also in your observance have you not noticed that I have backed down on my stance when out voted? No ofcourse not cause I have not done it the paladin way. Well you arrogant fool, as I can see you are starting to loose your cool a bit so we might as well talk about something else rather than push this topic untill it gets worse." Trace takes a drink and straightens up and moves on to another matter at hand. "My question is, what is the direction of this group? Are we going to back track and take care of that bear orc that kicked your tail in the ground or are we going to march on forward looking for new places and items?" When the food arrives Trace feeds Radiant while he listens to what everyone else has to say and bites his tongue when nesscary.

Excited by the deck of the cards the halfling says "Ooooohhh lets play a game of One Eye. I promise I'll play absolutely fair." The halfling begins juggling and doing an occasional slip where one ball would disapear up his sleeve only to rejoin the others a moment later during the next round of juggling.

(OOC:I roled for Knowledge, arcana to see if I reconize the deck of Cards)
"You are right Sir Thomas," said Sly,"I have behaved very badly. I'm sorry, if my mother was here, She would have pinch my ears." After a few minutes Sly sits up strait when he see's Ilsure shows the card to Uteva. "Don't play with those, I think I know what those cards are.
They are magic, good or bad I don't know." Sly slump back in him chair and his face goes ashen.

Uteva  d20+6=13
Tuesday February 6th, 2001 12:23:45 PM

Teva accepts the deck from the priest and examines it carefully, searching her memory for mention of anything similar. (Bardic Knowledge, 13) Disappointed, she shakes her head and returns the item to Ilsidur. "I have no idea, and it seems we've created friction between us for no good reason." She sighs and turns to go, pausing at the end of the partition to look back over her shoulder. "Let's hope the knowledge gained was worth it."

The slim bard hurries back to the table, but slows when she catches the emotional undercurrents. She retakes her seat cautiously, afraid to provoke worse trouble. A quick glance at the menu is all she takes. "I'll have stuffed mushrooms and the carrot soup, please," she tells Pannes, no longer as hungry as she'd been moments before. "And I'll be having wine as well."

Riguo (DM Lee-Anne)
Tuesday February 6th, 2001 1:13:59 PM

Riguo accepts the letter and quickly scans it. "Praise Lem, it is true! I recognize his hand. And you have saved him for us!" The tall maitre d' seems to lose all composure. Patrons at nearby tables turn to stare. "For such great friends of young Maurice, you will sup at our expense. Ah, but we've no room for you to stay. All the better inns are filled at this point in the season. How shall we see you housed suitably as heroes, as Sieur Alphais would wish?"

One of the staring customers rises and stalks over. Dressed all in black leather, she is trim and short, despite her bootheels. A cloud of greying dark hair surrounds her powdered face, and a coiled leather whip hangs at her waist.

"Now Riguo," she breathes, looping her arm through the man's elbow, and leaning against him. "There's no need to distress yourself. These people seem capable of taking care of themselves." The woman's bird-bright eyes study each of you. "Very capable. Won't you introduce us?"

Riguo swallows heavily and detaches himself from the woman to bow slightly. "May I present Madame Chloe, a valued patron of the Frosted Glass, and close friend of my employer."

Throughout all this, Pannes quietly takes requests, returning with a large tray of flatbreads and smoked cheeses and another of colourful canapés. He pours a pale yellow wine for each who requested it, leaving the chilled bottle and another full one on the table, then disappears as unobstrusively as he came.

The Package (DM Lee-Anne)
Tuesday February 6th, 2001 1:20:23 PM

Of the two dozen cards, only three others depict people. The remainder are blank on the face side. The backs of the cards appear identical, decorated in a finely detailed blue and yellow pattern. Only the cards themselves appear magical to Ilsidur's second sight. They are layered with three magical auras: two moderately strong, and one weaker.

Neither Uteva nor Sly recognize anything about the deck. (DC was 25)

Ilsidur
Tuesday February 6th, 2001 10:01:54 PM

Ilsidur moves back to the table, and sits down (up?) in the dwarf-sized chair. He orders a roast-beef sandwich, "Heavy on the beef," and another Mountainhome Dark to wash it down.

He looks over at Trace and Sir Thomas shooting daggers at each other. "I don't know what's going on here, but I think we all had better just cool down, myself included. Let me offer a toast, to good friends, watching each others' backs, and new adventures to be found. Who will drink with me?"

After the toast, he discreetly shows the cards around the table. "These cards detect as magical, with two strong auras and one weak one. I have no idea what they are. But I think we had better find out. My guess is that they are what Winnie was carrying with her when she fell into the wagon. She probably planted them in the horse-food sack."

"Pleased to meet you, Madame Chloe, I am Ilsidur Wayfinder, initiate of Marmathon Dur."

Once the introductions are out of the way, he beckons Riguo over, and whispers to him, "We have come across an unkown magical item, that possibly belongs to someone here in the city. Can you suggest someone in the city that might be able to identify the item, and perhaps point us in the direction of the rightful owner?"

Sir Thomas
Tuesday February 6th, 2001 11:25:12 PM

Thomas stands and looks pointedly at Trace. "I think you are full of it. I think that the only interests you are protecting are your own. And yes, I have noticed that you have compromised in a civil manner with the wishes of the group as a whole, as it should be, as I did. . . . But that has been your only redeeming quality as of late. And I will not be near you right now because you are so volatile and unpredictable. I apologize to the rest of you for my outburst. I hope you realize that none is directed at any of you and is actually in protection of you along with myself." Thomas turns and leaves the inn without dinner and without looking back.

Trace and Radiant
Wednesday February 7th, 2001 8:30:17 AM

Trace cracks a smile and shakes his head at Sir Thomas. He then looks up to see the lady being introduced, "Why hello I am Trace, it is nice to meet you. Hopefully I will get to talk to you more in a minute but I have to go and make amends." Trace turns to everyone at the table as he stands. "Please be seated everyone, I pushed him over the edge and I will go and bring him back, with a deserved apology. And as for the rest of you, I am sorry I have been so head strong of late and hope that you will forgive me." Trace dumps 50gp on the table, here have some fun on me while I am gone." Trace runs after Sir Thomas out the door. "Wiat Sir Thomas, let me speak to you." Trace moves in front of him so that he can not advance any further. "Ok, I have seen the light and I am sorry. I have been a bit head strong as of late and I promise to redeem my self. As of the bruteness I will from now on save it for the bad guys." Trace puts a firm arm around Sir Thomas and heads him back to the inn. "But I have made my moves for the good of the group and not just myself, that I promise. Now lets go and enjoy our dinner and I will keep my big mouth shut. As my mother used to say, if you do not have anything nice to say, dont say nothing at all." Trace gives a big smile and continues back to the inn.

Sly Foxx and Luke
Wednesday February 7th, 2001 12:42:49 PM

Sly cannot quite place the felling of warning as he look at the deck. Empty face cards, except for three that has a picture on it and two strong auras and one weak aura.*Hmm I wish I could remember* then the though was broken by this beautiful woman. Sly stands and bows, and greets her, " How How err do you err err nice to meat you hmm hmm they call me err err (turning to Lok and asked him) what do you call me.

Uteva
Wednesday February 7th, 2001 1:05:30 PM

Caught with her wineglass halfway to her lips for the toast, Teva stares as first the paladin storms out, then the ranger chases him. She meets Ilsidur's eyes over the rim of her glass. "Aye, to good friends," she murmurs, and drinks. "And let us hope that friendship is stronger than quick words."

Mustering a polite smile, she introduces herself to Madame Chloe, then nibbles at one of the canapés.

An Offer (DM Lee-Anne)
Wednesday February 7th, 2001 1:42:37 PM

"Well, it is good to meet you all, if you've had a hand in finding young Maurice." Madame Chloe's smile is more than friendly. "And fortunate as well. I think we can help each other. Riguo is right -- you will have trouble finding rooms in the city. I, however, have a suitable place you might stay, if you're willing to help guard it for me at night."

She gestures for her dinner companion to join her and turns back to the group, looking hopeful.

"An excellent suggestion, Madame Chloe." Looking relieved, Riguo bends close to hear Ilsidur's question, and a smile twitches about his lips. "This is Magic City, sieur; there are many such. You will want someone discreet? Allow me to make inquiries."

He straightens and speaks up. "If you will all excuse me, I would like to send a message directly to my employer." Riguo holds out Maurice's letter to Ilsidur. "Shall I send this on as well, or would you prefer to deliver it yourselves?" He awaits an answer, then hurries out a small private door.

The halfling giggles at Sly and says loudly "I would call you a tongue tied boy with a fancy for women and whips!" The halfling dances away from Sly giggling terribly. Prancing about he becomes serious at the mention of the letter. "Perhaps we should spare this man any more heartache and take the letter to him now, after a nice mug of ale that is." The halfling orders a mug with some of Trace's money and anxiously awaits it wishing to prove to Ilsidur that halflings are far sturdier than he could imagine.

Ael d'Gaiaim (Tim)
Wednesday February 7th, 2001 4:43:31 PM

A tallish man in rough travelling garb stands up from Chloe's table and, at her gesture, joins the conversation.
"Ah, a pleasure to meet all who are in evidence. If I may do myself the honour of introduction, I am Ael: A journeyman mage and scholar in the field of magical theory."
He pauses a moment to smile and survey the table.
"I certainly would join good Riguo in recommending the Quail. Such a delicate union of flavors and aromas! ...Oh, but forgive me; verbosity is a habit of mine. Please allow me to join you at your repast."

Sly Foxx and Luke
Wednesday February 7th, 2001 6:35:36 PM

"YES! YES! thats what they call me, Fan C Hips. NO NO thats not right,I'm Sly Foxx, my Lady." Sly is about to kiss her hand, when his thoughs are interupted, with what was just said by a man. Sly stop in mid sentance and turns, takes the buster off the chair(the one Loc vacated)next to his,"Why sit right here Mister Ael d'Gaiain, and tell us more about you and the food they serve here."

Sir Thomas
Wednesday February 7th, 2001 10:16:19 PM

Thomas is not thrilled that Trace has come after him. Fully expecting Trace to attack him he resists the apology at first, but does not honor the ranger with words. Once he settles down and Trace grabs him and speaks the apology into his face he agrees to go back in for dinner. "I understand that we will butt heads from time to time, so don't get me wrong. We are friends and I enjoy your company. I simply can not and will not take the abuse, verbal or physical. I accept your apology, and appreciate you offering it. Let's return to the good company of the group." THomas is still a bit heated, but in much better control. He returns to the inn with Trace, but says nothing. Instead, he sits in somewhat of an aura of embarrassement for his outburst.

Trace and Radiant
Wednesday February 7th, 2001 10:50:49 PM

Trace retuns to the table and starts to enjoy his meal along with the wine that has been brought. "I could not help but overhear that you will give us a place to stay for the night but you will need us to help protect it for you. Who or what are we protecting from?" Trace continues to eat while listening to the conversation at the table.

Thursday February 8th, 2001 11:45:00 AM

"If you would excuse me for a moment, I'll be right back. Oh! yes, odor me something nice and filling, thank-you," Then Sly walks over to Sir Thomas, and tells him,"Please don't mind Trace, after all we are Elves and have to be taken to task every once in a while. I don't know what came over me, but when you ask for a vote, I voted not to open the package but could not get the my voice to work. Once I saw the deck of cards, I knew you were right. But lets meet Ael d'Gaiaim, I think we have ourselves a COOK."

Thursday February 8th, 2001 12:09:42 PM

Relieved to see her friends back, Teva grins a welcome at the young mage. "Don't let Sly keep you from your own meal, Ael," she warns. "He lets his stomach do most of his talking for him."

The freckled brunette turns back to Madame Chloe. "Your offer is kind, Madame. But we've business here in town, and we don't expect to be here long."

Madame Chloe (DM Lee-Anne)
Thursday February 8th, 2001 12:51:35 PM

The woman nods to Pannes, who recruits another waiter to move her table snug against the party's. Pannes holds her chair as Madame Chloe sits beside Sir Thomas. "I'm going out of town to measure for some custom orders, and I need someone to watch my shop. I will be a few days only, and I have two guards, but," she sighs, and sips from her wineglass, "I don't entirely trust them. I've had some trouble with vandalism lately."

"I've already found some help." A negligent wave of her hand indicates Ael. "If there are enough of you, you should have freedom to conduct your own business. I just want to know that my shop is safe while I'm away."

Pannes, meanwhile, has brought everyone's orders, including a mug of ale for Lok taller than the halfling's head. Ilsidur's massive roast beef comes with a deep bowl of dark gravy. The quail are, as advertised, divine.

Sly Foxx and Luke

Sly goes back to his seat,"OH! Garson." said Sly with a finger pointing in the air." I'll have the quail and two big sandwiches of beef in a doggie bag." then Sly adds," Oh! yes, if you could bring my dog a beef bone, Please. Thank-you." Turning to the wizard, then ask "Tell me about your self and my I call you Ael?"

Ael d'Gaiaim
Thursday February 8th, 2001 7:01:16 PM

Having reaquired his meal, Ael smiles at Sly and continues eating while he speaks.

"As I said, I am a traveling scholar. And where better for one to learn new spells and theories than here in Magic City? Unfortunately, when I arrived I discovered firsthand their rather draconian entry rules...and was forced to seek employment."

He takes a sip of wine before continuing.

"Being of some small culinary skill, I sought employ at this fine establishment and while doing so, was approached by Madame Chloe. "

Grinning broadly, Ael says "And even a scholar may enjoy some...practical application of magic...on occasion." and cracks his knuckles.

Sir Thomas
Friday February 9th, 2001 11:25:47 AM

Thomas contemplates all of the situations ernestly. "We owe some kind of fee at the gate that requires we pay it soon. Also, we only have a limited time in the city unless we secure some kind of job for ourselves. This seems like a good opportunity to accomplish all of our goals at once. We can watch the shop and wait for Sir Alphias to return, have employment, and a means to pay the toll at the gate tower in front of mud city. I think this is a good opportunity that lies before us." THomas leaves his opinion on the table for his friends to do with as they wish. He cracks a slight, forced smile as his friends try to cheer him up. He also mutters a quiet thank you.

Lok Mufflefoot
Friday February 9th, 2001 11:27:37 AM

The halflings ears perk at that last statement. Something about the way the man had said practical disturbed the halfling. He attempts to get closer and peer in his pockets while nobody is looking. With a fake grin on his face the halfling says in a questioning voice "Practical?" He begins juggling at that point with the silverware on the table and dancing a little as some of the ale begins getting to his head. The halfling still attentively watches the man who is "Practical" without appearing to do so. His little hands squirmed to check those pockets out first hand.

Ilsidur (by Lee-Anne)
Friday February 9th, 2001 1:13:32 PM

Ilsidur tries his sandwich and nods approvingly. "If it weren't for the frills and the polite music, this place would be okay."

He keeps his eyes on the flying silverware as he addresses Madame Chloe. "Do you think your guards are involved in the vandalism?"

Uteva
Friday February 9th, 2001 1:24:30 PM

Teva finishes her soup and reaches for the mushrooms. She nods to Sir Thomas. "Yes, it would solve a number of problems. How much will you pay for this extra margin of safety, Madame?"

Madame Chloe (DM Lee-Anne)
Friday February 9th, 2001 5:46:00 PM

The lady frowns. "I'm not sure about the guards. You won't be working directly with them; they handle the inside of the shop, and I want you to watch the outside and the warehouse. Will you agree to answer questions under a truth spell, if there are any problems?"

She sits back in her chair. "I'll pay one white chit per day, to be divided among the nine of you, with the first two days paid in advance. I will need to see your employment or entry cards before we can ratify a contract."

After rattling all this off in a clipped, business-like tone, Madame Chloe blinks, smiles, and turns a sultry gaze on Sir Thomas. "So tell me, how do you like the quail tonight?"

Pannes waves away all attempts to pay for the meal. "It's on the house," he explains. "Riguo will have it no other way."

Sir Thomas
Friday February 9th, 2001 9:10:00 PM

Thomas blinks out of a trans-like state when spoken to by madame Chloe. He looks down at the untouched quail sitting in front of him, and then returns he befuddled gaze back to the speaker. "Well, I don't know. Let me find out for you." Thomas takes a bite chewing completely and swallowing before responding again. "It is very good. Thank you for asking. How was your meal Madame?" After receiving her response Thomas fires a series of questions of his own. "I don't mind you taking your precaution to prevent being hurt by the agreement. Do you mind if I attempt to judge your character by my lord Alemi's laws? Where are you going? How long will you be gone? How does this city work so that we know where to get help if trouble should arise? Would we call for the guards or be allowed to handle any intuders on our own? I thought that the law stated something about no altercations or lying or something along those lines. If that is the case, why are you so worried about your belongings if the laws are so strict?"

Ael d'Gaiaim
Friday February 9th, 2001 10:13:08 PM

Still smiling, Ael turns to Lok and explains.
"By practical, I of course refer to the usage of spells and related magics beyond the scope of the theoretical. For instance, were I to cast a standard web spell on you and then set fire to it; it would, at least to me, be more "practical" than using magic to further my studies."

He frowns slightly and continues. "Of course, one could draw a comparison to your own finely honed skills. A knife between my shoulder blades would certainly hurt, and be more "practical" than the fun one would have looting an unprotected shop."

"Of course, there are differing degrees and opinions of of 'practical'..." ...Ael continues ad nauseum for several minutes before realizing that he just inadvertantly threatened someone. "Ahh...but my dear halfling friend, I apologuise if I have offended."

Clapping Lok on the back, he gestures at the salt shaker, which moves across the table for his use. [OOC: Mage Hand] "Isn't practicality grand?"

Smiling again, Ael says to Lok..."Salt?"

Sly Foxx and Luke
Saturday February 10th, 2001 3:06:53 AM

It seem that Sly has regained his appetite for food and is eating his meal with zeal. He smiles while Loc's tricks, and maybe Sly will show practical Ael, his traveling Spell Book. "Madame Chloe are meals and a place to sleep included in this deal?" Sly look under the table to see if his dog is quietly enjoying his meal.

Trace and Radiant
Saturday February 10th, 2001 9:12:00 AM

Trace continues to enjoy his meal while tearing pices of fish to Radiant. "Madam, if you don't mind me interupting? Is there some where in town that can transfer gold into chits, like an exchange? One more thing before I return to this excellant meal, what are we protecting in the wharhouse, has the trouble been theives or just out right vandels? Trace listens to the answers nodding his head and continues to enjoy his meal and wine.

Ilsidur
Sunday February 11th, 2001 1:20:33 PM

Ilsidur dunks the roast beef sandwich in the gravy and takes a big bite. Mumbling around the mouthful, he says, "Good sandwich. I never could get into eating tiny little birds and such." Then he drains the tankard and orders another beer.

He looks over at the newcomer and says, "Well met, Ael. I am Ilsidur Wayfinder, initiate of Marmathon Dur. Are you from these parts? We need some local advice, especially about money and these "chits". I have some gold that I want to convert, and I want to get the best exchange rate. Apparently there is a huge market on the bridge, and I need to make some purchases. Any advice?"

Then Ilsidur looks up at Madame Chloe. "When we enterred the city, they said we had to pay a 'white chit' and that we needed to pay it over the next two days. Does that mean we need to pay one white chit for the entire party, or one each? If we need one each, we will need to change some gold for chits. Or could I cast some spells and be paid?"

Uteva
Monday February 12th, 2001 1:08:13 PM

Now that her friends are relaxing, Teva takes the time to enjoy her meal. She smiles at Ael. "Some kinds of practical are more practical than others." Pointedly, she stares at the halfling dancing silverware through the air.

With a sung sequence of four quiet notes and a crook of her forefinger, the bard snags one of the little pitchforks from the juggling pattern and floats back to the table (Mage Hand). "Lok, don't you think this place is a bit too posh for a recap of last night's antics?" She wrinkles her nose at him and winks. "If you're going to land in any laps, pick someone with a sense of fun this time."

Madame Chloe (DM Lee-Anne)
Monday February 12th, 2001 1:10:54 PM

"I've enjoyed it excellently well, sieur. Alphais can be relied upon to find the cleverest chefs." Chloe pushes her hair back over her shoulder. "I'll accept Lemiac's scrutiny, of course, and how very civil of you to ask. As to my trip, I'll be visiting a number of estates outside the city. I expect to be gone for three days, unless one of my customers invites me to spend a day at hawking. That's a fine bird," she tells Trace. "I've been admiring him since you walked in. Have you hunted him in the Plains?"

The lady frowns and leans back to allow Pannes to clear away her plate. "Back to business, I don't fear the citizens of Southook; we treat one another with all due civility. These vandals can't be citizens. As my temporary employees, you will have the authority to defend my property: the armour shop, the warehouse, and the wares within them. The Northook Constables patrol all major streets -- they would handle the aftermath if anything untoward occurs."

"You'll be staying in the apartment inside my warehouse, and it hasn't been used in some time." Chloe laughs, a throaty sound. "You'll have to stock the larder yourselves."

"There are moneychangers throughout the city. As non-citizens, you may get a better exchange rate in Northook. And the city offices in Northook would have record of this fee you owe. I know nothing about it." She waves these money questions away as one might brush off a buzzing insect.

"So, are we agreed?" Pulling a memory stone from the pouch at her waist, Madame Chloe raises her brows and meets each person's eyes. "I will need your entry passes to dictate the contracts."

Lok Mufflefoot

The halfling says "Thank you yes some salt would be grand." He then throws a shake of it over his left shoulder for good luck and continues his antics juggling adding the salt shaker in the mix until he comes close to the man to while juggling. ()"Not really that practical am I?" At Uteva's comment he mock stumbles right into her lap and says "More fun?" Under his breath he says to Uteva near her ear "I'm a little sambolied right now, but these folks are full of fish. Err I mean full of it metinks." The halfling hiccups in her ear loudly. He almost drops his silverware at the hiccup and has to do a half tumble to try and catch them only to have the fork tangle in his hair. Looking a bit dazed the halfling smiles a goofy smile and his ears perk up a bit.

Sir Thomas
Monday February 12th, 2001 9:16:48 PM

Thomas gives a slight chuckle at the halfling. "Silly kid, " mutters light-heartedly under his breath. Thomas looks around the table to see the reaction of each of his friends to all of the answers that were just laid out before them. He then looks at Madame Chloe and says nothing.

Trace and Radiant
Monday February 12th, 2001 9:25:19 PM

Speaking with Madame Chloe, "I havent had Radiant long. He came to me when we were passing through the forest and we just seemed to bond allmost a once. Now that we spend our time together I dont think there would ever be anything that we would not do for each other." Trace leans and whispers to Radiant, "Fetch". Trace throws his dinner fork into the air and at once Radiant springs forward pumping his wings to gain speed and then retrives it with his razor sharp talons and makes a quick turn and dives back to Trace's arm. Trace praises Radiant and feeds him some more fish. "I have not had a chance to hunt with him yet but he has proven excellent as a fighter in helping the group. I agree with the terms of service how do the rest of you feel?"

Ael d'Gaiaim
Monday February 12th, 2001 10:42:42 PM

"Oh, I think you're very practical, Lok.", Ael smiles and settles back in his chair. "The arrangements are agreeable to me, Madame...I must say that my practical magic feels much more comfortable with such assistance."

Ael's pass is ready for review. "Unfortunately, I must admit to knowing very little about MAgic City. I am visiting for quite mundane, and...perhaps less than practical reasons. In any case, I shall be honored to lend my small skills to this operation."

Picking up a toothpick, the mage starts to twirl it between his fingers absently, mumbling to himself -- withdrawn, and perhaps considering additional "practical" magic use.

Ilsidur
Tuesday February 13th, 2001 8:23:34 AM

Ilsidur nods at Madame Chloe's suggestion for work. "If we want to stay in Hook City for any length of time, we will need local work and local money. I would be pleased to take on your contract, as well. Since you mention that your business is an armoury, I was wondering if you had any 'special' armour for sale, something that might fit my stature.? I can pay in gold, but not in chits. However, since you trade outside of the city, I'm sure gold is as useful to you."

Sly Foxx and Luke
Tuesday February 13th, 2001 9:19:46 AM

Sly looks under the table,"You hear that Luke, we have to get our own food, is that alright with you?" Sly look up and signals to Sir Thomas the OK sign. Them Sly finishes his meal and enjoys the antic that Loc is doing.

Uteva
Tuesday February 13th, 2001 1:17:54 PM

Laughing, Teva plucks the fork from Lok's hair and playfully swats him off her lap. "Practically silly, is what you are. I can't wait to see Sly's reaction in the morning, when he realizes he has to break his fast with trail rations."

With a questioning look for Trace and another for Sir Thomas, she gives her tacit agreement to accept the job. She passes down the card they were issued at the gate, with it's glowing blue magical writing.

A Commotion at the Door (DM Lee-Anne)  d20+9=28
Tuesday February 13th, 2001 1:47:34 PM

Madame Chloe accepts the passes from Ael and Uteva, and patiently awaits the group's decision. Her eyes brighten at Ilsidur's question, and she looks him over more carefully. "I do have a few pieces that might suit you. I usually trade rather than accept foreign coin, but it would only be civil of me to offer you the same exchange rate that the moneychangers give to citizens. We should discuss it when I return."

Heads turn and people begin to murmur loudly, drowning out the quiet dulcimer music. Patrons stare toward the door, where a slender young elf maid stands, flanked by two wolves.

Madame Chloe stands and waves her over. "Ah, here she is," she says with satisfaction. "I've already spoken with Altemia about helping me. I hope that you can work with her."

Riguo leads the elf toward the table, and pauses to hand a folded note to Ilsidur. "Either of these should be satisfactory," he murmurs, then returns to his post.

Ael, please make a Spot check vs. DC 28.

Sly stop eating when Luke starts to a low growl, sly turns and spots the Elf maiden with the two wolves. "OH! Boy! Don't move Luke." Sly dives under the table and grabs his war dog. When Sly apprears from under the table, he tell the maiden,"Control your animals, please I don't think that wolves and dogs like each other."

Altemia, Tara, Kevil
Tuesday February 13th, 2001 9:38:04 PM

Altemia walks across to where Madame Chloe is with Tara and Kevil following. She gets to Madame Chloe's side and is about to nod a greeting to the others at the table when she hears the rough words spoken to her. She turns her head and just looks at the half-elf who has spoken. She then looks back at Tara and Kevil whose hackles are raised at the growls coming from under the table.

"It seems you should be the one controlling the animal." Altemia considers for a moment. "But, I'll put my two over by the wall. For now." She motions at the two wolves and they move over toward the wall, their eyes never leaving the table and their friend.

Sir Thomas
Tuesday February 13th, 2001 10:20:34 PM

Thomas raises his eyebrows and draws in to take a breath with which to speak when the commotion interrupts his thought. He looks at the elf as she walks over. He stands as she approaches, as a gentleman would. He offers her his chair since Madame Chloe seems to know her. "Pardon me ma'am, but since you seem to know some of our party I would appreciate it if you would sit here. I'll pull up another chair." thomas pulls out his chair and goes looking for another. When he returns he approaches Chloe and stands next to her. when she looks at him with her full attention he offers his right hand to shake her's. "I accept your offer, and I trust you just as you are trusting us with your warehouse and goods. they will be safe while we watch them or we will not be safe." After sealing his end of the deal with the shake he sits at his new spot at the table and resumes his meal . . . somehow having brought it with him or haing it passed to him.

Ilsidur
Tuesday February 13th, 2001 11:22:10 PM

Ilsidur nods to Lady Chloe, "Right, I would be pleased to look over your merchandise. It's only too bad we can't make a deal before you leave. A little better armour might help me be a better guard. However, I'll see you when you get back."

Then he accepts the note from the Maitre d', and murmurs, "Thanks, I'll look into it." He opens the note to see what it says. [OOC: Lee-Anne, I presume you will send me the contents in an email.]

He looks up from the note, to greet the newcomer, "Good to meet you. I am Ilsidur Wayfinder, initiate of Marmathon Dur." Then he thinks to himself, "This is quite the menagerie we are gathering here. Pretty soon we will need a vet along as a regular."

Uteva
Wednesday February 14th, 2001 1:34:45 PM

The brunette waves to catch Pannes' attention, and speaks to him quietly. She turns to Altemia, smiling wide. "Welcome, Altemia. I'm Uteva. Will you join us for dessert?"

A Contract (DM Lee-Anne)
Wednesday February 14th, 2001 2:17:44 PM

Madame Chloe adds Altemia's entry pass to the others, and calls Riguo over to examine one of them. "It is no trouble, Madame. I can authorize this." When the lady activates her memory stone, the maitre d' dictates into it. "As authorized proxy for Sieur Alphais dal Costo, I, Riguo, extend to Madame Chloe Anstahl sub-contracting privileges with the following employees . . ."

He and the lady dictate the terms of the contract, naming each person, and calling on Ael, Altemia, and Sir Thomas to state their agreement to the terms. It goes on for some time.

Eventually, Madame Chloe pockets her stone and shares a relieved smile with you all. "Well, that's done. Here are your entry passes back, and this is an employer card of mine." The card she hands Sir Thomas resembles the passes, except that the writing glows green. "Present that at the city offices as proof of employment."

She opens her palm, to display two white discs and two small gems: one purple, and one red. "This is the key to warehouse," she says, pointing to the purple one, "and I'm giving you the key to the shop, just in case. And, of course, your first two days' payment." She pours the chits and gems into Sir Thomas' hand, and gives careful, clear directions to her shop.

"Now, if you will excuse me, I have other preparations to make. Thank you all for your help, and for your company during the meal." Chloe stands just as Pannes arrives with a teapot and a large tray of sliced cakes.

Sly Foxx and Luke
Wednesday February 14th, 2001 5:54:20 PM

Sly stands next to his chair until the contract is done. Then turns to face the maiden Altemia, "Sister Elf Altemia, My father is a human fighter and my mother Wood Elf from Evergreen Tribe. My father died defending the village from outlaws who attacked the mix race village, with the sole wish to kill all who lived there. My mother, my sister and I, along with other Elven mother family went to the Monteverde Range in the Krag Us Monde Mountains, where she raised me and my sister. What happen next is not for discussion here."
Sly still keeping an eye on the Altemia face,"As I hope you know, Sister Elf, These animals do not follow us out of fear, but of love for our company. Now the law of nature is one wolf is a pet, But two wolves is a pack. And that is why my War Dog Luke, was reacting to. My dog was under my control at all times and was only warning me and our party of in pending danger. Now I hope that clears up this little idea from your little head."

The prospect of working for money made the halfling visibly wilt a little. However, knowing that he'd be among friends lightened his heart some. Even the mage did not seem to be as suspicious as he thought possible.
The halfling approaches the new woman carefully and wiggles his ears at the wolves. "Neat! When my legs are tired I could ride one!" The halfling giggles at the though and skips around a bit.
He bows before the woman and says "Lok Mufflefoot at your entertainment." He smiles and says mischeviously "Care for a bawdy ballad?"

Trace and Radiant
Wednesday February 14th, 2001 9:39:17 PM

Trace stands and intoduces himself, "Hello, I am Trace and my Eagle friend here is Radiant. It is good to meet another Ranger, I have not many others in quite some time." Turning to the Sir Thomas, "I think when we finish here we need to head over to the shop and see what we will be guarding and how. I figure we can give proff of employment on the way, sound good to you?"

Ael d'Gaiaim
Wednesday February 14th, 2001 9:52:55 PM

Ael suddenly realizes he is being rude, and stands up to introduce himself. "Greetings, Lady; I am Ael, journeyman mage and scholar. It is my hope that we will have a rewarding and educational employment here in Magic City."

Upon finishing his speed, the wizard sits once more, and continues playing with the remainder of his food. At first, it appears that he is building a strange sculpture with the remains of his quail, but upon closer inspection it appears to be a series of runes. Setting his toothpick upright in the middle, he nods, smiles in satisfaction, and pushes the plate away.

Sir THomas
Wednesday February 14th, 2001 10:10:44 PM

"I agree with you Trace. We need to get our bearings and get our defense strategy down. I'm ready when the rest of you are." Thomas addresses Ael and Altemia, "It seems that our paths lie together for a short while at least. I am Sir Thomas Hurley, protector of Domi's honor and messenger of Alemi's word. I hope that we can all be friends."

Thomas then holds the keys and payment up that Chloe gave him. "Alyndar used to be our treasureer of sorts. Who will hold the money and valuables now?"

Altemia, Tara, Kevil
Wednesday February 14th, 2001 10:47:13 PM

Altemia sits in the chair vacated by Sir Thomas and nods at him. Grinning at the halfling in front of her, Altemia introduces herself.

"I am Altemia. My friends over there are Tara and Kevil. Varra, my horse, is in the stables. I come from high in the mountains here from a very independent people." A sad look crosses her face and she plays with her braid. "Recently some of them have gone missing. I, myself, who follow both the path of the druid and the path of the ranger could find no trace. Neither could my brother and sister druids and rangers. I came to the city to look for possible answers. I decided to hire on with Madame Chloe to earn some money in case I need to pay people for their help."

Altemia is startled out of her recitation by Sly's response. "Aye, two are the start of a pack. I am hoping that someday Tara will be a mother. I am sure that they will leave me then, but she will be happy and that's what matters. Your friend Luke need not fear for you or his other friends from my two. They are rather well behaved. But all these people here do seem to make them a bit nervous. They aren't used to so many people at once. For that matter, neither am I."

Uteva
Thursday February 15th, 2001 12:40:37 PM

"Well, I'm good to go." Uteva brushes cake crumbs from her lips, and folds her napkin onto the table. "Shall we arrange to leave the horses at the stables here? We can look for something closer to Chloe's shop in the morning. I think our business with the city offices will have to wait until morning, too, since they're across the river in Northook."

Pannes (DM Lee-Anne)
Thursday February 15th, 2001 12:43:51 PM

Pannes clears the table and brings a fresh pot of tea. He sets out little dishes of colourful sweetmeats. "Will there be anything else this evening?" His Adam's apple bobs alarmingly when he speaks.

Sir THomas
Thursday February 15th, 2001 4:06:49 PM

"I don't believe that there will be Pannes. Thank you for your excellent service and attention. We enjoyed ourselves while we were in your care." Thomas stands and nods his head in a sort of pseudo-bow as he makes a move toward the door. He will hold it open for his friends when they all get gathered enough to leave.

Sly Foxx and Luke
Thursday February 15th, 2001 4:57:19 PM

"You know,Altemia, you remind me of my own Sister, And that's what I will call you Little Sister. Come, lets follow the others," said Sly snapping his fingers at Luke (to make sure that Luke is paying attention). Sly thanks Pannes for the sweet meats and starts to walk out, Stop at Sir Thomas and tells him,"I'll takes first watch if you want?"

Lok Mufflefoot
Thursday February 15th, 2001 5:00:48 PM

"A fine night!" The halfling sighs as he realizes that the fun is about to end. Looking about him he says "Maybe nesh time I can sing a ballad." With that the playful halfling plods out thanking Sir Thomas and giving his arm a happy pat. Jumping as high as he can he ruffles Sir Thomas's hair in a strange maneuver before landing on the ground heavily, and walking out as though he'd done nothing at all.

Ilsidur
Thursday February 15th, 2001 7:19:14 PM

Ilsidur gets down from his chair and joins the party. On his way past Pannes, he says, "Thanks for your help with the information. I'll look into it." Then he brushes the crumbs off the front of his shirt, shifts his pack and heads out the door to the Lady's business.

Ael d'Gaiaim
Thursday February 15th, 2001 8:25:41 PM

Ael stands up as Sir Thomas introduces himself and bows slightly. "A pleasure to meet you.", he frowns a bit and mumbles "Alemi...where have I heard that name before...?"

He expresses willingness to come along with the group, if they will have him; it seems that he has not yet secured lodging in the city.

Altemia, Tara, and Kevil
Friday February 16th, 2001 2:33:34 AM

Altemia stands and motions to Tara and Kevil to follow her as she moves outside to join the others. She smiles a bit to herself at Sly's words.

"Little Sister, huh? Well, I have no true brothers or sisters, so I don't know what that is like. Thank you Sly Foxx."

Uteva
Friday February 16th, 2001 12:37:13 PM

Teva grins at the banter between the elves. "At least if he thinks of you as a sister, you'll be safe from his seductive wiles. Someone come help me with our gear."

Ducking into the stables, the bard arranges for the mounts to stay, and reemerges loaded down with saddlebags and sacks. "Oof. I hope the walk is a short one. So, Ael, where are you from?"
