Dinner and Dance

Jus (7 Stoneskins)  d20=7 d20=13 d20=9 d20=15 d20=15
Tuesday January 23rd, 2001 4:50:32 AM

Jus is back in his element, proud to exercise his court etiquette, and saddened for the reason it must be used.

Jus bows the proper degree for the occasion; adding just enough depth, tilt of the head, and lay of hands to offer sincerity, regret, and unspoken empathy in hopes that Sturdevant can read his signs (Etiquette check by 10). Jus then unfastens his bandolier from the front and carefully lays his swords in front of Sturdevant in an accepted show of deference(Etiquette by 4).

Not doubting that Sturdevant is prepared for this, Jus makes an offer while kneeling before him, "To assure you of our truth, I will willingly submit to any truthsayers you may have at your disposal. By whatever means you used to ensure they are not one of our doppleganger or polymorphed foes, I'm willing to do the same." Again Jus uses the courts language and allows his body to convey that he is willing to place his life in Sturdevant's decision, hoping Sturdevant understands these signs (Etiquette by 8).

Standing up proudly, but with his head bowed slightly in humility (Etiquette by 2), Jus introduces Lorna. "You may not know this beautiful Lady whom I am honored to escort," Jus says, his eyes sparkling with happiness as he looks at her face. "She is the Lovely Lady Lorna." Although he desires to use her as further proof of their innocence, etiquette (by 2) and his personal feelings prevent him to doing so.

Tericus
Tuesday January 23rd, 2001 9:51:07 AM

Tericus decides to keep his mouth shut for a while, not wanting to interfer with anything Jus or Noonan have planned

Nonam
Tuesday January 23rd, 2001 2:46:57 PM

Nonam waits patiently for Sturtevent to do something.

DM Kent
Tuesday January 23rd, 2001 4:28:52 PM

As the Three arange themselves in front of Sturdevant, the ballroom goes silent and many of the guests move in to hear what is being said and to watch what occurs.

Sturdevant just barely acknowledges Jus' bow with the slightest of a nod of his head. A raised eyebrow meets Jus' obeisiance and offer of sword. As Jus offers to to submit to a truthsayer, a smile crosses the mayor's face.

With a nod to Lorna, Sturdevant greets her. " Lady Lorienthal, Once again I am pleased to be graced with your presence.

Then, without any warnig, Sturtevant steps forward and in one fluid motion draws his sword, and in the same movement has the silvery blade against Jus' neck.

"If I believed that you were false to me or the Kingdom you would not be here now." Sheathing his sword, he continues,I have no doubts of who you are or of your alliances, but to allay any fears that these wary guests might have, Tell me the name of your contact in the Underdark that came here trying to find you earlier?

Gareth  d20=5 d20=17
Tuesday January 23rd, 2001 5:08:54 PM

The warrior determines that the mayor's display is ceremonial and does nothing to intervene (Int). He says evenly, "That would be Hatchme. He came by the Griffon looking for us too. He was completely covered by his clothing so to hide his identity - and his race from everyone. He left us instructions to meet him - the location which we can share with you in a more private setting if you like.". Pausing and taking a more grave and unhappy tone (And failing Wisdom by 9) he continues. "Also, I would greatly appreciate the mayor not drawing his sword and putting it to the throat of one whom I have sworn to fight to the death to protect. It would require me to respond if I had not known your intention - even if the decision to put himself in that position was his own.". The warrior waits ready, knowing he would not willingly allow a sword to be placed at his throat by anyone - even the mayor.

Teko
Tuesday January 23rd, 2001 7:04:29 PM

As Teko sees the goings on, he at first looks to be very much out of his element. Gradually, he relaxes, but becomes more and more interested in what is being said. His head moving like a slow, uneven pendulum.

Jus (7 Stoneskins)
Tuesday January 23rd, 2001 7:43:30 PM

Jus' eyebrows go up as Sturdevant's blade comes down, but he manages to keep any other sign of his surprise at bay.

With a slight placating gesture to Gareth, Jus says in the warm tones of friendship, "Thank you, Gareth. But we are guests here, and I've told the Mayor that I would accept his judgement. I see no reason to be offended by the reminder of his authority."

Addressing Sturdevant again, Jus gives a short nod, "As Gareth has spoken, Hatchme is the one that sought us last night. We don't know him well, but he has helped us before -- and loved a lady that may have sacrificed herself for our safety."

Tericus
Wednesday January 24th, 2001 9:29:27 AM

surprised and alarmed at the Mayor's actions, Tericus feels for his mace at his side. he relaxes a bit after things calm down, but his hand still stays near his weapon

Nonam  d20=1
Wednesday January 24th, 2001 9:35:41 AM

Nonam notes the mayor's skill and silently doubts that Gareth could have done anything but fall to the floor bleeding had he tried to stop Sturtevent.

Throughout the interchange, the wizard continues to stand tall and silent before the mayor and the crowd. He doubts anything he says will improve the situation so he simply tries to look as calm and regal as is possible (Ch by 18).

Onrad
Wednesday January 24th, 2001 11:33:50 AM

Onrad blinks at the physical showing of Sturtavent and stands there totally surprised. When he can think again, a red hot flash crosses his brain and by reflex, he whips his two swords out and does a backflip to give himself room to maneuver in case this Sturtavent is himself a doppelganger.

He recognizes the wisdom in making this a show of force instead of a political or social set of tactics. It keeps other politicians and social climbers out of the mix.

"Good sir, if you would now do the same for us. Where did you take us to tell us the story of the drow a few long days ago and who was there representing this non-evil clan of the drow?"

Teko
Wednesday January 24th, 2001 6:43:43 PM

Teko's head snaps around as Onrad does his backflip, and for a brief moment Teko rests his hand on the pommel of his dagger. He lets out a long breath, trying to stay relaxed. His gaze moves back to the mayor.

DM Kent
Wednesday January 24th, 2001 9:45:57 PM

With a raised eyebrow and a quizical look The Mayor watches Onrad with just a touch more than amusement. " Very Pretty Lord Pryderi, but totally unnecessary.

Turning to face Gareth. And as for you not appreciating the Mayor drawing a weapon in his own house against one of a group of people accused of doing grevious injury to people under his sworn protection, you have not one leg to stand on. As far as I knew you were these imposters. Believe me, if I had any doubts about who you all are, you would all be lying dead on the floor currently.

Now as to your questions, impertinent as they are, the way you have phrased them, makes the question unanswerable or you mean them as trick questions. For I did not tell you the story of the drow, Ursis did. And as for whom was there representing the Matron, I do not believe you were ever formally introduced to the Matron's Priestess.

(OOC and if you were I never saw it and can't find it in the archives)

Tericus
Thursday January 25th, 2001 7:47:07 AM

"Pardon your lordship." Tericus says diplomaticly "But we havent done any of these deeds we are accused of. This young lady here," he says as he points to Lorna. "Was attacked by someone or something that looked like some of my companions. They dealt her a mortal blow, but we were able to heal her wounds in time. My friend here," he points to Gareth, "Was also attacked by something that looked like him and moved like him. You said that if you didnt belive we were false to you and the kindome, we would be dead, which leads me to belive you might have some knowelege of whats going on. If you do, me and my friends would appreciate any information on what has happened and why this might be happening to us."

Gareth  d20=3
Thursday January 25th, 2001 12:12:42 PM

The warrior's hackles raise but he thinks better of the retort he initally had in mind - something like 'You'd be dead too if you tried' - and carefully chooses to leave this line of comment alone. Instead he replies in a controlled but dangerous voice. "I'm sure you have been falsely accused of many things in your day. Are you accustomed to others putting swords at your throat when this happened and not responding - and then threatening your life when you raised objections to such treatment? If you were sure we were not responsible for this before we entered, why do this? I DO have a leg to stand on - unless you still suspect us. Are we to expect that every time we come see you and someone has taken a shot at us that we must endure such displays? Do we all of a sudden go from savior to villan over the unconfirmed words of others? You called us to service, we did not come looking for it. Either dispense with your threats or you can count me out of this nonsense. I've got better things to do with my time. And if there is nothing else, we have a another matter to attend to in another city. At least that way you can know that whoever is left here looking like us is indeed an imposter!". The warrior waits imatiently.

Nonam
Thursday January 25th, 2001 4:39:49 PM

Nonam decides that his colleagues have done enough talking on their own. He unclasps his hands and places one hand upon Gareth's shoulder in the hopes that it will quiet him down. Then he shoots Onrad a withering look before turning to face the mayor looking somewhat ashamed. He bows his head in respect and then begins to speak to Sturtevent but loudly enough that the crowd can hear.

"Lord Sturtevent, I wish to offer you my deepest apologies for my companions' behavior. I beg your forgiveness and hope that you will remember that we have been returned from Menzoberranzan for less than a day. The situtation there was somewhat dangerous, and I believe that we are all still feeling a bit like we are walking on the knife's edge. Furthermore, the activities of this afternoon have done little to calm us. We were heroes this morning, but now we are the subjects of dirty looks and snide comments. I hope that you consider these facts and forgive their disrespect."

Jus  d20=4
Thursday January 25th, 2001 8:40:50 PM

Jus' jaw starts to drop as he hears Gareth. He manages to catch himself (Etiquette by 13). Instead, he remains calm and impassive, giving a slight smile as if he's listening to an unruly child. When Nonam speaks, Jus nods his head and takes a deep breath, agreeing that it's been a hard few... days?

Onrad
Thursday January 25th, 2001 10:03:14 PM

Onrad with show puts away his weapons. He watches Sturtavent carefully. He thinks to himself. This is not the same calm unpreturbed man that met with them before their trip. Either this man is not what he says he is or he is under some sort of extreme pressure. What could cause this man to lose his cool like this?

The council? Maybe. Onrad looks around and tries to spot members of the council. If successful, then he tries to determine their demeanor. Are they enjoying this? Are they instigating this?

Teko
Thursday January 25th, 2001 11:01:01 PM

As Nonam finishes his words, Teko briefly adds with a slight bow, "Indeed, we remain at your service."

DM Kent  d20=2
Friday January 26th, 2001 8:34:55 PM

(made Charisma roll by a mere 25)
With a polite nod of thanks and appreciation, to Nonan and Teku, Sturdevant turns his attention back to Gareth.
"Hmm, Falsely accused, yes I have been, and I have awaited my fate at the hands of whoever was doling out the punishment, knowing that justice would prevail and be served. Besides, I would not say, in total, that you are accused falsely. After all there are eye witness accounts, from more than one noble, as well as a dozen or so merchants, seeing The Three commit these crimes." Some of them are here tonight."
As for knowing whether you were guilty or not before you entered. Truely I was not absolutely sure of who you were, until just now. ::Smiling:: I suspected of course but..." he shruggs. "And as to calling you to service, I believe that you all, as a group, made a decision to accept certain, umm, tasks. So I would say that you called yourselves to service." So if you want to leave it is not me you are taking leave of but yourselves."
"You ask, what you can expect, whenever you come into the city, or any city for that matter? Truely, I can not say. However, I will say that now you are making a name for yourselves, you must be prepared for others trying to capitalize on it or sully it, in one way, or another. I will also say that rashness and heated anger are not the best ways to win friends and influence enemies."

Turning to Tericus.
"Actually, It was your acrobatic friend, who's double they were fighting. The rest of the group seems to have left the city a bit earlier this afternoon." As to what else I do or don't know, well... he pauses as he looks around the room.
Ah, but I digress, this is a party and, as such, is hardly the place for such serious discourse. And I am sure that we are boring Lorna to death with our Boorishness. Perhaps we might continue our discussion after after dinner in more comfortable quarters?"

As Onrad looks around he sees several groups of men and women paying particular attention to the goings ons and several of these groups do contain Council members, several of whom seem to be nodding their heads and smiling a bit. Suprisingly there are a number of strange red-garbed priests, mixed in among them.

At that moment there is the sound of a lightly rung bell that echos thru the room. With a beaming smile Sturdevant announces, "Dinner is ready everyone. Shall we dine?"

Onrad
Friday January 26th, 2001 10:33:39 PM

Onrad regains his smile, although perhaps just a bit strained and follow the party leaders into the dining room.

He whispers to Tericus, "Seen those red robed priests before?"

Nonam
Sunday January 28th, 2001 8:48:49 AM

Nonam relaxes somewhat and whispers to the group, "Just try to have a good time tonight. Don't kill any dukes, punch any ladies, or accuse the servants of poisoning your food if it tastes bad."
Then the wizard casually moves to the dining room trying to find his place. Already he seems to have forgotten the events of a few minutes earlier. On his way, he looks around to see if he can spot a Broker of Karinthis. Afterall, there are ways to make money besides stealing it from monsters.

Jus
Sunday January 28th, 2001 5:37:17 PM

Jus retrieves his swords, slipping them back over his shoulders. He rolls his shoulders a few times to relieve the stress that was building up during that confrontation. "Gareth and Onrad, are you two brothers, or what?", Jus says smiling despite his frustration at the two fighters.

Offering his arm to Lorna again, Jus escorts her towards the dining room. "Lady Lorienthal.... Excuse me for my ignorance, Lorna, but why does your family name sound so familiar to me?"

Teko
Sunday January 28th, 2001 8:51:32 PM

Teko finds his place at the table, smiling cordially as he makes his way there. He sits when the others sit. He watches the priests from time to time trying to identify any symbols they may have.

Tericus
Monday January 29th, 2001 9:31:36 AM

"No I havent Onrad." Tericus whispers back, then he moves near the Mayor. "How did you know I told you the wrong attacker?" he asks him plainly. "I may have missed some of the conversation, but I dont recall anyone of us mentioning who was attacked."

Gareth
Monday January 29th, 2001 4:47:21 PM

The warrior nods to the mayor, apparently satisfied with his answer. "Dinner sounds like a very good idea. I appreciate your position on this and see that you obviously know more than we about this. But as you say, after dinner would be a better time than now. Please accept my thanks - and apology for accusing you.". The massive and somewhat embarassed leader of the Three moves in with the others and finds a seat near the others - unless seats are assigned. He looks around for any fighters or kindred folk with whom he could relate and tries to speak to them of their adventures.

Lorna (DM Kent)
Monday January 29th, 2001 9:50:08 PM

Watching the procedings with a calm that belies her earlier trepidation, Lorna calmly retakes Jus' arm and quietly answers his question as they walk to the table and throughout dinner..
My family name? Familiar? I am quite sure I don't know. My doulos, family, is from Rheadel, in Fargunia. My father was a merchant leader of some note when we left to come here, some five years ago.

Anticipating Jus's next question she continues.
My doulos fled to Plateau city, after my father's second cousin falsely accused a local Lord of a transgression with his daughter. Any way, to make a long tale short, my cousin tried to return and was soon captured and executed.
My mother was killed on the trip here by bandits and my sister was taken during the same attack. After that my father just sort of gave up on living I think, he went to visit some very distant family, somewhere called the Tree of Parting. Anyway he never made it back and I have had no word of him for the past two years.

Sturtevant (DM Kent)
Monday January 29th, 2001 10:05:47 PM

A bit more relaxed, Sturtevant leads the way and is just barely beaten by Jus in offering his arm to Lorna. Walking along with Tericus, Sturtevant smiles and with a gleam in his eye, or was that a second eyelid, looks at Tericusa and says, "I believe we said we would save this conversation until after dinner?

DM Kent
Monday January 29th, 2001 10:15:35 PM

The Three, along with Lorna and the Mayor enter the dining room and with the exception of Sturtevant's seat, there seem to be only seven seats left unclaimed, all at the main table. Seated also at the table are three members of the High Council, five obviously powerful and wealthy merchants, and four of the red-cloaked priests.

Dinner is superb and surpasses any expectations, any of you might have had. Without asking Lorna is served a separate vegetarian entree and her wine glass is removed from her place before service. The conversation is very stilted and forced when any try to engage the priests and the merchants are extremely cautious when speaking with any of the three. The only comfortable conversations sem to be those with yourselves and when you chat with the councilmen.

Onrad
Monday January 29th, 2001 11:28:59 PM

To Jus, "Brothers?" as the comment goes completely over his head.

Onrad hearing Sturtavent's final admonition to Tericus, takes it to heart as well, and gulping and with red face, struggles through the meal.

Tericus
Tuesday January 30th, 2001 5:23:13 AM

nods to Studervent and takes his place at the table. he digs into the meal, knowing that his questions will be answered soon.

Jus
Tuesday January 30th, 2001 6:22:26 AM

Smiling his trademark grin, Jus is only too happy to have beaten the mayor's offer to Lorna. Escorting Lorna inside, Jus sits and enjoys himself. It's nice to have a formal meal -- however stilted.

The red robed priests and shy merchants are providing Jus a wealth of questions to ask. He refrains, however, and manages to keep the pleasantries going. Learning from his earlier mistakes in the Red Wyrm Inn, Jus keeps the comments about himself to a minimum, instead showing polite interest in those around him -- and a bit extra to Lorna. Several times during the meal, Jus gets nervous with the thought of someone trying to poison Lorna, but something about the commanding presence Sturtevant had in the other room assures him that all will be well here.

Gareth  d20=3
Tuesday January 30th, 2001 11:57:29 AM

The warrior eats with good manners and engages in quiet conversation with those around him (CHA by 15). He comfort level increases as the meal moves on. He cleans his plate and politely asks for seconds - then thirds - then fourths before his ravenous hunger subsides. To anyone who questions the volume of food consumed: "Must still be recovering from the mission. It usually takes a few days before I get back to normal.". He controls his consumption of alcohol, wanting to be lucid when speaking to the mayor later on.

Nonam
Tuesday January 30th, 2001 12:02:21 PM

Nonam eases into dinner and tries to strike up a conversation with some of the councilmen. He asks one nearby, "So what sort of developments are going on the city? Economically I mean. We've certainly picked up a little gold on our trips, and it seems wise to invest it back in the city. What sorts of opportunities are there in that regard. Unlike my sword swinging friends, I don't want to follow the life of the adventurer forever. Too dangerous, but I suppose political intrigues have an element of danger too."

Teko
Tuesday January 30th, 2001 3:49:38 PM

"Hello," Teko says to one of the councilmen, "I am Teko of The Three. And I am very honored." And he introduces himself similarly to those all around, striking up conversation regarding the events that happened while The Three were away. As he begins to eat, he talks less, obviously enjoying the food set before him. But it is obvious that he enjoys the company just as much as the food.

DM Kent
Tuesday January 30th, 2001 8:01:16 PM

The meal is all you could have hoped for and the only person who looks a bit askance at gareth is one of the girls serving the food and it is more of a look of awe than any thing else.

At the mention of the word gold, the councilman that Nonan is chatting with, stops drinking and shows a bit more interest in his new dining companion. "Well, yes it certainly would be wise to do something with it. I myself have a few projects going on that might interest you. There are also quite a few people looking to borrow money for building purposes. There seem to be an awful lot of "NEW" temples going up." Of course there is always the risk that you might lose everything. But you have so much you might gain, if you play things right.

Now politics is another thing all together. Mostly it is a losing proposition, unless you are already in power or know the right people. Of course depending on whom you listen too, great change is coming. Some say for the better and not a moment too soon. Me, I stay out of it. Politics and gossiping, those are two things that can get you killed.

To Teku left and by far his most eager and talkative dining partner is a very attractive middle aged woman, who is wearing a council badge on her gown. She has obviously been sampling the store of libations ever since the party started and is just gussing over every dish that is served.
"Now, you really must try this. It is just absolutely to die for. I have never quite tasted anything like it it truly is divine. Is it true what they are saying about you and your friends. I mean did you really tear through the wall of the Blue Ale tavern in the Gold Quarter? They say that you did it by throwing several members of the Golden hearth Club through it? What must it be like to be so strong? And then rolling the owner of the Flying Monkey down the street in one of his own Ale barrells. Oh that must have been a sight, even for the Circus quarter. And then what you did to The Flying Fish in the Trade Quarter I mean taking all of his plates and gasses was bad enough but did you have to deposit the broken shards on the front lawn of the Merchant's Guild House? That I think showed rather poor taste.

Tericus
Wednesday January 31st, 2001 6:01:33 AM

Tericus finishes his meal and waits politely for the others to finish, though he is eager to talk to the mayor in private

Nonam
Wednesday January 31st, 2001 8:58:32 AM

Nonam nods his head in response as the councilman talks, "That's what I was thinking about politics. Trust me, this group has no desire to get involved. We," Here Nonam nods toward Onrad, "were just talking about how the Gold Dragons lost their freedom once they got involved in politics. That's not for us."

Then Nonam switches back to the topic of money, "So what type of return can you get by loaning money to the temples for building purposes? I thought that they all just tried to get donations for that type of thing. Surely Domi and Alemi aren't running out of money?"

After making certain that he brings up the religious issue, Nonam talks more about his investment plans, "Maybe if I just shared my plans that would help you to better advise me. I would like to eventually open a magic shop. I would probably focus on weapons and armor, which I can craft myself. Now, I have enough to get a shop, but to completely stock it with magic swords is going to take some time and more money than I have. Through my research, I expect I could make profits of about 50% per weapon, more if its custom made. So, there are excellent profits to be made. I figure that I either need to invest what I'm making now, so that in a year or two I can fund everything myself, or I need to find partners who will help with the initial startup costs. In either case, I intend to wait until we achieve Dragon status. I imagine Nonam of the Suchandsuch Dragons can draw more customers than Nonam of the Three. I also need to decide where I would open such a business. Somewhere in Adventurer's Square here in Plateau City seems like a good choice, but there's a lot of competition here. I think perhaps the competition wouldn't be as stiff in Floating City. Plus, the Overlord seems eager to attract businesses with inducements. I wonder what types of incentives Plateau City could offer to help out in the endeavor."

Nonam seems totally absorbed in his conversation with this gentleman. He's apparently been thinking about these things, but he's never said anything to the rest of the Three.

Gareth  d20=8
Wednesday January 31st, 2001 11:45:25 AM

The warrior smiles at the waiting girl politely and compliments her on her service. He listens to Nonam a while but appears to get a headache as he goes through his plans. He instead avails himself to any conversations regarding future adventures or past adventures of others. He waits with amazing patience (Made Wis) for someone clearly more at home cutting things up than politely sitting and eating with fine china, gold and crystal.

Onrad
Wednesday January 31st, 2001 10:38:21 PM

Onrad stares at Gareth. "What's he got? He's so bulky you can't get your arms around him. And he's always getting Charliehorses from a lack of stretching."

Onrad sits quietly eating and listening.

Teko
Thursday February 1st, 2001 12:12:20 AM

To the lady to his left, Teko answers, "Poor taste, indeed. However, the culprits you speak of were not The Three, but imposters. I fear that our success in doing good has created some enemies for us. Someone is out to give us a bad name. Believe me, if it had been our inclination to do such things - and mind you it certainly isn't - it would have been a simple matter to cloak our appearance. No one would have known who we were. I would demonstrate even now, but it isn't appropriate to use such magics at table, I think." Teko pauses for a moment and continues, "Hmm, I do believe I'll have taste of this work of culinary genius that you praise so highly...My, your right, absolutely right. This is wonderful!"

DM Kent
Thursday February 1st, 2001 8:55:16 AM

The Three continue there respective chats, with the exception of Gareth, who notices that there truly isn't much muscle in the room, outside of the Three. In fact, most of the guests look like they have been enjoying the fruits of other peoples labor for a long time. The are several weapons visible on several of the males in the group, though most appear to be ceremonial and would probably break if they actually had to be used. The only true exceptions to these rules seem to be the red-robed priests, who also appear to be talking to noone but them selves for the most part.

To Nonan, the nobleman looks a bit askance. Oh yes that's right you have been out of touch, so to speak. Domi and Alemi are not the temples being built or looking for backers. There are newer temples being built for Gods most have not heard of, or at least not in a very long time. So far there seems to be a fair modicum of support for them, several in particular, including the temple that our red-robed friends are representing.

Teku's semi-charnming and slightly tipsy dining companion, blushes slightly as he defends the Three and makes his statements. "Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to imply that you all had done such things, but you must admit it doesn't look very good.

As Onrad takes a bite of his meal, he realizes that there is something hanging from his fork that is not food. It seems to be a piece of paper, with writing on it. No one else has noticed it hanging from his fork, yet.

Tericus' nearest dining companion is one of the red-robed priests and hears snatches of a quiet conversation between the priests.

"What a bunch of slovenly shopkeepers.
You are right. I can't believe we have to deal with them.

What do you expect when they let common ruffians attend as if they were equals.

I hear we acquired some new worshipers last night.

Tericus
Thursday February 1st, 2001 9:50:44 AM

Tericus continues to pick at his plate, pretending that he is bored, but in reality hes concentrating on the conversation between the 2 priests

Gareth
Thursday February 1st, 2001 12:12:41 PM

The warrior toys with his cup and waits quietly.

Jus
Thursday February 1st, 2001 3:11:26 PM

Jus continues his conversations, and casually inserts comments about the fine service the halflings have given them in the city [might as well help them stir up some business, Jus thinks to himself]. After a bit, Jus works in mention of how the city's popularity is attracting quite a bit of new clientele.

"If time allows, I'd like to wander the city to see what businesses and services these new residents have brought with them. What things can I expect to see?" Jus enthusiastically asks, half from excitement of the possibilities, and half with silent hopes that any answers will enlighten him on the red-robed priests -- people are avoiding the priests too much for them not to be important. And why do they have such prominence in this feast??? Something definitely is askew.

Nonam
Thursday February 1st, 2001 4:15:48 PM

Nonam continues the conversation, "So, new gods, eh? That seems relatively interesting. How are the more established temples reacting?"

Teko
Thursday February 1st, 2001 7:25:31 PM

Teko nods an acknowledgement to his conversation partner. "We'll tend to that. In the end, our primary concern is to do what is honorable. Not to be honored." Teko continues with a grin, "Did I tell you that I'm something of a chef myself? Not of the caliber to produce this, of course, but certainly enough to appreciate the skills behind our meal. My mother you see, was always one to set a marvelous table..."

Onrad

Onrad coughs lightly and slams his knee into the leg on the table on purpose. "Ow."

He drops his fork on purpose and bends down to retrieve it quickly before one of the staff can beat him to it. He quickly reads the note.

To Nonan > is dining companion takes another drink and with a beaming smile, keeps the conversation going. "Actually the establihed temples seem to be taking an ignore it and it will go away type attitude." In fact I believe there are some that don't even realize the new temples are in existance. It seems as though they just appeared over night." Our red-cloaked friends are only one and not even the most powerful or influential of the.

this is the only important part of the rest of the priest's conversation that Tericus overhears.

It is amazing how little it takes to win over these peoples faith.

Yes, G'aal won't be so easily pushed aside.

Lorna has become a bit quieter at Jus' side as she realizes one of the red-robed priests seems to be pointedly staring at her.

Teku's dining partner blushes once again and to hide it she takes yet another large sip of wine, and asks, On so are you the one who cooks while you are on the road. I do so love a man that cooks.

The serving girl comes up behind Gareth's chair and simply asks, "Can I get you anything else my lord?"

Onrad bends down to retrieve his fork, and read the note. The note reads,

The Mayor is in deadly peril. Leave immediately.

The warrior notes several things as he bores away the remainder of the dinner (Perception by 10 and 9 respectively). He sees Onrad doing something weird, he sees the priest staring at Lorna - as he has been scoping her out occasionally, and he hears the word Ga'al from Nonam's conversation (he was trying to ignore it). Somehow he knows he shouldn't like that name... He is startled out of his observations as the waitress asks him if he is done. "I think I'm OK right now, lass - but I'll let you know. Thank you for asking.". He looks at her again - a bit more carefully this time and smiles. After she leaves he keeps an eye on the red robed priest but watches Onrad carefully.

Jus
Saturday February 3rd, 2001 12:31:51 AM

Jus notices Lorna's quietness. Unsure what's wrong, he places his hand upon hers and gives a reassuring smile. Quietly, he tells her, "I truly am honored that you came with me tonight. After all that happened... well... thank you." Ignoring everyone else for a few minutes, Jus looks into her eyes and enjoys a few minutes just with her.

Nonam suddenly notices the rest of the group acting weird. He decides to not eat any more of the food in case the meat is bad, but he continues his conversation, "Ga'al that's the deity they worship in Aisildur isn't it? Is New Elenna attempting to improve relations with the Aisildurians, or are they just expanding?"

Monday February 5th, 2001 8:16:45 PM

As Onrad reads his note, Sturtevant stands and with a quick scanning of the tables simply says, Please continue eating. I must take my leave from you momentarily to discuss a few things with OUR friends, The Three. With that said he beckons for you all to follow him.

Teko
Monday February 5th, 2001 9:02:52 PM

Teko rises from the table. "Thanks so much for your conversation this evening." He bows slightly to the lady at his side. "It was most enjoyable." And he moves to follow Sturtevant.

Jus
Tuesday February 6th, 2001 4:56:43 AM

Not wanting to leave Lorna in her obvious discomfort, Jus escorts her out following Sturtevant. If the mayor looks like he's going to ask Jus to leave Lorna behind, Jus raises one eyebrow in mute determination and gives a barely perceptible shake of his head.

Onrad pockets the note as Sturtevant leads them in to his small personal library, as he motions for them to find seats around a center table with him at the head, leaving you with a choice of seven seats, arranged around the table. After you find your seats, Lorna included, Sturtevant flips his wrist and then looking around for second, visibly relaxes for the first time tonight. "So I guess you have a few questions. You have only a short time, for you are already behind by a few moves in this game. So lets get this over with."

Nonam
Wednesday February 7th, 2001 9:23:15 AM

For all of his intelligence, it sometimes seems that Nonam doesn't have a lick of common sense. He looks up at Sturtevent and says, "What do you mean? Is something going on?"

Gareth  d20=15
Wednesday February 7th, 2001 11:07:30 AM

The warrior sits down across from the mayor and studies him carefully. "Please tell us about this - game. And why we are behind. And if possible, what moves we need to make next. It would appear that this might be tied into the next mission you have for us - or is this simply a continuation of the first?". The warrior watches him closely since his demeanor has shifted so drastically trying to make sure everything is OK with him (Missed Int by 3).

Onrad (angry and flushed)
Wednesday February 7th, 2001 3:37:42 PM

Onrad brings his plate as he leaves. Once alone, he searches it with his fork for any other messages. He produces the message he was given and shows it to all.

He then begins looking for things out of whack in this room. He listens to Sturtavent.

"Sorry for being rude earlier. Things were so out of whack, I didn't know who to trust. I was just attacked by myself before this meal. Gentlemen, we have to turn this "trick" on it's head and set up our counterparts to be caught. Tell us what you know quickly sir. I'm beginning to think that all this is a ruse to keep us from something else. Are our Drow Friends being watched over at their new home? Not that they can't take care of themselves...but if someone doesn't like what we've done in bringing them here, they certainly aren't going to limit themselves to bothering us."

"And this new god activity is weird. We all know that only the Gods of Wold are legal here and all others are illegal. So why are they being tolerated? Has someone charmed every priest in town as well as the council, the guard, and the dozens of adveturing groups that would attack these guys on sight? The only reason I didn't attack them on sight was concern for our mayor here. It is a crime to worship anyone other than the Gods of Wold!!!!!!!"

Jus (7 Stoneskins)
Wednesday February 7th, 2001 5:33:02 PM

Now that Onrad has revealed the note, Jus considers how the mayor may be in danger. Everyone's been together for most of the evening... except for Lorna. There was a time where she went off to prepare herself for the meal. Keeping his eyes forward, his face nevertheless shows some stress at this thought. If she indeed is one of the Drow, then the real Lorna is probably dead.

Worrying over this scenario, Jus tries to decide how to check for this.... Detect Magic maybe, but he'd have to drop the Stoneskin first. Sturtevant did say he knew we were not the perpetrators; maybe his confidence includes Lorna?

"Lord Mayor," Jus asks, "I'm concerned for Lorna. Since she's been unwillingly and unmercifully dragged into this, I fear for her safety until this conflict is resolved. Can you guarantee her safety for me? If so, I'd only request that she not be left in the care of, and that she be protected from, the priests -- there is something unnerving about their presence."

Teko
Wednesday February 7th, 2001 10:21:32 PM

Teko lets the words of the others pass by without comment, all the while watching the Lord Mayor's reaction. He awaits the words of the Mayor.

Nonam
Thursday February 8th, 2001 11:30:44 AM

Nonam picks on Onrad a bit while the group waits, "If you care so much about the gods Onrad, then why don't you become a priest?"

Gareth
Thursday February 8th, 2001 12:54:56 PM

The warrior reads the note and clearly becomes prepared for battle. Although he makes no move to his sword, it is clear he could have it drawn and ready in an instant. "I care not about the local politics so much as I do the fact that the priest in red was looking at our lady friend here with an evil lookgin scowl. I'm also not too overly concerned about the safety of the new topside drow house as they are capable of defending themselves. I doubt Hatchme would ask us to join him in Tincrow for that purpose.". He looks to the others as he talks and hopes they notice what he just did.

DM Kent
Friday February 9th, 2001 8:20:29 AM

I guess game is my word for it. Others I suppose would call it politics, others still, intrigue. Whatever it is called, since you have chosen to go for Dragon status, you have become quite important pieces on the board. And right now instead of you making the moves, someone is making them for you. That is what I meant by your being behind. Its not really your fault, really, since no one informed that you were players, let alone that there was a game afoot, but then that to is part of it. You all have been reacting, to situations instead of controling them. As to what you should do next, I would think hard on why your doubles might want to get close to the Matron and then stop them. Onrad is right your doubles have distracted you and given you reaason to stay here to clear your name. Again you have to ask why? You ask if our new friends are being watched? Given the fact that there are a lot of people, some of them very powerful, who were strongly opposed to this relocation, my guess would be yes constantly. And you are right they can protect themselves, but why would they have to from people they consider their allies, friends, and even battle partners?

Lorna I suspect will likely be safer once you ar away from her than when she is with you. She was used only as a distraction, and of course they wanted the pass and invitation. And I would say it worked, wouldn't you?

As to our red-robed friends, a lot is changing in the Wold. Gods form other parts of the Wold are finding root in the city and yes there are even some Cult God temples popping up here and there. We stamp them out as we can but they seem to pop right back up the next night. G'aal is different though, He is a Woldian God, just not one that is worshipped much outside of Ailsidur. They seems to be causing a different kind of problem, but not one we can politically do anything about as yet.

Though you seem to have mentioned your doubles and are a bit miffed about them you ask no questions about what I know or suspect, so I will tell you what I know. They seem to be you exact doubles, they even seem to have the same skills and abilities that you do, which makes them very formidable indeed. They appeared a day and a half before you all returned. They too appeared out of no where. They disappeared for a bit, so no one was able to confirm your return or not. Nor could we find anything out about the status of your mission. Until of course you actually reappeared from your chore. By then there were reports of your doubles creating havoc in many different areas of the city. What was confusing was that sometimes your doubles even paid for the damages that were incurred. Other times, because people were aware of your hoped for status they dared not say anything. Then you came back and things got interesting. Hatchme showd up here just after you left and I sent him to find you at the inn. Here is where it gets a bit confusing. As he was leaving he met you all, or so he thought, coming in. The note was mentioned and everal of the group went inside to get it. This is where Lorna was attacked. The others, along with Hatchme started walking into the Garden just talking when the others of you attacked him. Hatchme has not been seen since. And using all my resources has not turned up him or any information about him. It is possible he is dead, but then no body has been found either.
So that is what I know and some of what I surmise.

Nonam
Friday February 9th, 2001 9:40:10 AM

The wizard takes in what the mayor has to say and then he says under his breath, "Maybe we should just retire."

Gareth
Friday February 9th, 2001 10:35:24 AM

The warrior frowns as the mayor speaks. "So what did the note say? The only thing we got was a shred of paper that we think said the name of a city - which is where we intend to go next. I doubt Hatchme was killed. Even though we - and our doubles apparently - may have enough power to do it, he is quite adept at stealth. Too bad we didn't capture that double of Onrad. Might've been useful.".

Tericus
Friday February 9th, 2001 10:09:54 PM

"Do you have any leads or information as to where our doubles may be? And is there a double of each of us? All we saw was one of Onrad?" Tericus asks the mayor

Teko
Sunday February 11th, 2001 10:41:42 PM

"I am wondering why anyone would go to the trouble of creating full duplicates of us. The magic involved would be rather extensive, yes? Frankly, we aren't worth the trouble. Not yet. If anyone wanted to ruin our political influence, surely there are easier ways of doing it. If anyone wanted to distract us from urgent matters, again, surely there are easier ways."

Onrad
Monday February 12th, 2001 2:10:40 PM

Ignoring Nonam's jibe, but grinning at him and holding his holy symbol of Wardd in his fingers, Onrad turns to Teko.

"I agree with you Teko. Unless House Millithor being eternally in our debt all of a sudden puts us on the board as big players. We should go to this place on the note and then pay a visit to our Drow Friends this night."

"Nonam, didn't you find a ring of mass teleportation when we visited Gareth's home recently? We should use it this night. It could help confuse our enemies by being able to move quickly from location to location."

Jus

Jus listens, uncharacteristically quite for a change.

Dm kent
Monday February 12th, 2001 10:27:38 PM

About what the note said, I have no idea, as I was not privy to what it contained. However as to where your duplicates might be, I can safely say that they are currently in Brinkwater, about to use your pass and invitation to seek an audiance with those whom you are supposed to be meeting.

Hmm, Teleporting would be helpful. But have any of you been to Berinkwater before. If not I may have the solution to that, but it is still risky.

Tericus
Tuesday February 13th, 2001 4:57:12 AM

"Im not even sure where Brinkwater is?"

Nonam
Tuesday February 13th, 2001 11:00:21 AM

Nonam nods, "We passed through Brinkwater on our way here from Floating City. I remember it well enough to teleport there, but teleporting makes me nauseous."
Nonam thumbs the glass knife that was a gift from the drow hanging at his waist, "I imagine that having these blue knives will help our credibility. If the doubles were around before we returned, chances are they haven't duplicated them yet."
"So, if everyone is ready, we can be on our way." The wizard twists the ring on his finger while he waits.

Gareth
Tuesday February 13th, 2001 12:11:26 PM

As the warrior finally puts the facts together (i.e. that Brinkwater is where House Milithor settled), he curses and says "We must get there now! Mayor, do you have any means to contact them and warn them of what's about to happen there?". Remembering the teleport ring from their trip to his homeland, he says with relief "Can you get us to Brinkwater with that thing, Nonam? I'd say we'd better hurry."

Onrad (Invisible)
Tuesday February 13th, 2001 12:55:04 PM

Onrad nods at Nonam and says, "Everyone gather around Nonam. He'll tell us what to do."

To Gareth he adds, "Brinkwater is on the same plateau, but not where the Drow have been settled. The Drow have settled out in the Monster Preserve west of the 3rd plateau."

[Kent I can send a map of where they are if you want me to.]

"I think I'll arrive invisible. Pretend like I'm not there." Onrad activates his armor and goes invisible.

Jus
Tuesday February 13th, 2001 2:51:17 PM

Jus walks up to the mayor. "Thank you for your offer of assistance. Before we teleport, if that's what we choose, I'd like to know the risky solution you had planned."

Teko
Tuesday February 13th, 2001 9:36:00 PM

Teko appears to take a mischevious posture, and is about to speak, but closes his mouth as Jus prompts the mayor for other options. He turns and listens.

DM Kent
Wednesday February 14th, 2001 8:15:16 AM

My option still was for you to teleport only I was going to project an image of a place in Brinkwater. The risk involved was twofold. First whether the projectee could hanle it and second, whether they got the picture correct. If you are familiar enough then that is not needed.

My suggestion is that you leave soon, not that you aren't welcome to stay and dance the night away. After all, I am sure you would all have plenty of willing dance partners for the entire night.

Nonam (invisible)  d4+1=5 d4+1=3 d4+1=2 d100=46
Wednesday February 14th, 2001 10:01:54 AM

Nonam smiles and says, "Before we leave, let's magic up. I've got a few spells to cast on you louts." Nonam casts Bull's Strength on Gareth (+5 to strength modifier). Then he casts Cat's Grace on Onrad (+3 to dex modifier), and finally he casts another Cat's Grace on Jus (+2). Next the wizard hands Gareth a Potion of Dispel Magic, "If you can manage to, pour that over the head of one of the impostors." Finally, he casts invisibility on himself.

The mage waits for everyone else, "The enhancement spells will last many hours. My invisibility will only last a couple. Once we're in Brinkwater, we can quickly check it out. If no one is there, I can Shadow Walk us to the drow in a couple of minutes. To teleport we simply need to hold hands in a circle. I recommend that we face outward, so that we can see what's around us when we arrive. Once we are doing so, I will give the ring it's command word."

Nonam waits til everyone is ready, and he teleports the group. He is successful in the attempt, and the group should appear on target near the road just south of Brinkwater.

Gareth
Wednesday February 14th, 2001 11:25:56 AM

The warrior revels a moment in his new strength but quickly comes back to reality. "First of all, I think we should quickly go back to our rooms and get our armor on. Second of all, I am really interested in one of those spells you guys keep casting. Looks something like a layer of stone peeling off someone when they are hit...? I don't suppose either of you mage types would be able to spare one of those would you?". After he gets his answer, he looks to the mayor "One last thing. Do you know where in Brinkwater we are supposed to meet the drow? We need to make sure that we can get to them fast.". Once all the talking is done, he bows to the mayor and says "We are honored to serve the citizens of this country - even if we always don't see eye to eye on everything. I hope we are parting strong allies as our commitment to this is still here.".

Onrad
Wednesday February 14th, 2001 12:00:51 PM

Onrad nods to Gareth and agrees. 'Yes, we go get our stuff first. There's no use in teleporting just for that. We walk.'

"Thanks Sturtavent for your help and support. We'll work hard this night at clearing our names...then, perhaps then, we can take a few days if not weeks off. I need a vacation."

Teko

Teko echos Onrad's thanks. "Thank you, Lord Mayor." He turns to the others, "I'm ready."

Jus (7 Stoneskins)
Thursday February 15th, 2001 4:28:58 AM

Jus bids a fond farewell to Lorna, expressing his regret that he won't be able to dance with her this evening. Turning back to the mayor, Jus quips, "You didn't arrange all this just so you could dance with Lorna, did you?" Giving a soft chuckle, Jus continues, "Do me a favor and dance once for me, would you?"

Heading back to the group, Jus makes the suggestion that perhaps they should use the mayor's advice. "It would be much more covert if we appeared in a home, rather than having to walk into the city."

Good thing we had them with us. I'd say we'd better get there quick. Hey Nonam, Jus, Are you able to use one of those spells on me or not - the one you cast on Lorna, I mean?".

Onrad
Thursday February 15th, 2001 10:08:50 AM

"No, Gareth, I think they were looking for something in particular. Either what they were looking for was with us, or we didn't have what they wanted in the first place. Later, perhaps, we can do a legend lore and perhaps find out what they were after if we don't discover that with our investigations. Double Check to see that you have everything."

Onrad does exactly that. He double checks things. Then he looks around the room carefully to see if anything is unusual. Then he nods that he is ready to go.
