A Familiar Face (DM Lee-Anne) Wednesday March 14th, 2001 2:34:02 PM
Ael finds nothing else of note in or around the shop.
After breakfast, Madame Chloe joins you for the short trip to the court offices. She wears her customary black leather outfit and whip.
As she locks the shop door behind her, a familiar figure appears at the end of the street, towing his small cart toward you.
Sir Thomas (by Ceil) Wednesday March 14th, 2001 3:53:34 PM
Sir Thomas eats a big breakfast, and when he sees Trace comming to the table to eat, tells him. "AHH! Yes, I remember the feeling when last I met that Bear of a Ork!" then he places his hand on Trace back Giving him todays ( his healing spell). Then he exits the warehouse, with the rest of the party. Sir Thomas look down the street and tell the rest of the party, "Well by the beard of Domi, look who's coming down the street. What a sight for sore eyes."
Sly Foxx and Luke Wednesday March 14th, 2001 4:05:59 PM
Sly gets up after a few hours of sleep, he feels a little sore. He pach and puts away his gear. Then goes for a cup of klaw and a piece of bread (for once in his life Sly is not hungry). Goes out side with Trace and the others and waits untill they are all toghther (So that they all arive as a party). Turns as Sir Thomas is saying something to the effect of somebody coming down the street. Takes a good look at the wagon and rider, and Sly heart start to sing. "YES! YES! it's the old Grey Elf himself, IT'S Alyndar." yells Sly to Luke the dog.
Alyndar Wednesday March 14th, 2001 5:43:54 PM
While walking beside his Ox and cart, Aly spies up ahead a few familiar faces, a smile crosses his stubblied face and his pace picks up just slightly. As he gets within a few feet of the group, Aly stops his cart. He goes to the side and reaches inside and pulls out a large pottery crock. He walks up to Sir Thomas, Sly and Luke and asks: Who wants a cookie?
Ilsidur Thursday March 15th, 2001 1:01:42 AM
Ilsidur moves forward to take his friend's hand. "Well met again, Alyndar. I take it that the church has released you from its service? I am glad you could rejoin us, although for different reasons than Sly of the Stomach." Then Ilsidur smiles and proceeds to fill Alyndar on the happenings of the past day or so, while munching on a cookie.
Uteva Thursday March 15th, 2001 4:29:17 PM
"Alyndar!" The young bard smiles widely and hugs the Elf at her first opportunity. "I'm so glad to see you. Wouldn't you know we've run into Bear again, here in the city? You'd better give Trace two cookies, as he took the brunt of it this time. Can you stay? We're on our way to deal with more Hookish bureaucracy."
She turns to Chloe. "Madame Chloe, this is Alyndar, an accomplished wizard who travelled with us to Hook City. Alyndar, Chloe has contracted with us, and with Altemia and Ael here," she gestures to the two, to introduce them, "to protect her property. So far, it's not gone well." Teva makes a sour face.
Altemia, Tara, and Kevil Thursday March 15th, 2001 4:53:24 PM
(OOC: Sorry for not posting...puter crapped out and had to get a new one.)
Altemia wakes up after a few hours. She sits on her bedroll and meditates as well as thinks about the past nights doings. (She keeps the same spells as before.)
After that, she rolls up her bedroll and straightens things up in the apartment. She also crumbles up some rations for the two wolves and washes her face.
She heads outside when she hears a bit of a commotion out there. She walks out, with Tara and Kevil following behind, just in time to see Uteva point herself out to an elf with an ox and cart.
Southook Court Offices (DM Lee-Anne) Thursday March 15th, 2001 5:13:26 PM
Trace does, indeed, look little the worse for wear this morning, and Sir Thomas finds that his god-given powers are not needed.
Madame Chloe greets Alyndar politely enough, but her gaze remains distracted during the walk to the court offices. Southook is awake and bustling at full swing at this hour of the morning. On the Street of the Gods, a major avenue, a steady flow of merchants, porters, and messengers streams toward the nearby Stairs to the Bridge.
The court offices are housed in a rather imposing columned building guarded by Northook Constables in polished uniforms. The dark marble entry hall echoes hollowly. A robed functionary seated at the reception desk inquires as to your business, then directs you to Monitor Faston's courtroom.
A short hallway and a heavy door embossed with Alemi's arms open into the courtroom. The near and side walls are lined with a single row of benches, with the orcs from last night seated on the left. Bear and the other injured orc display their bandages prominently. Captain Berru sits just beside the door. At the front of the room is a small polished thrumwood table and an empty chair.
Sly Foxx and Luke Thursday March 15th, 2001 5:58:11 PM
"OH, Alyndar your cookies is the medicen I really need ,right now." said sly. Why don't you put your oxen and cart in the warehouseand come along with us." Munch munch, " To the court offices and we'll fill you in on what happen since you left." munch munch, "OH! by the how's Qwint? Can Luke have another cookie?"
Alyndar Thursday March 15th, 2001 6:04:53 PM
Aly in turns greets Madame Chloe.
Aly puts the cart and ox up in the warehouse, grabs his walking staff and pack and follows the group to the courthouse. Aly listens intently to the others as they tell of what has transpired in the last day. Aly also informs the group that Qwint has decided to stay with those we have helped to help rebuild but when pressed for more info as to what we have done, Aly politely informs them that the church has sworn him to secrecy and it's an oath he cannot break.
Aly does bring with him a meat bone for Luke and a couple more of his cookies, knowing 3 won't be enough for the bottomless pit known as Sly.
Sir Thomas (Ceil) Thursday March 15th, 2001 6:20:49 PM
Sir Thomas walks along and eating a cookie or two. "Ah! yes, we did have a run in with the Bear last night. Only this time he went for Trace. How he got into the city or got that silence and sleeping spell? I'll never know," they came to the court house. "Well, we're here."Sir Thomas tells the others and they enter the Court House and then into the Monitor Faston's courtroom, turns to Captain Berru, not and bows, then goes to sit down, asking "Where do we sit, not there, I hope." Pointing to where the Orcs are sitting.
Altemia, Tara, and Kevil Thursday March 15th, 2001 7:44:25 PM
Altemia and her four-legged friends follow along with the others. She is very quiet on the walk to the court offices.
Altemia walks alongside Madame Chloe giving her support for what is to come just by her presence. Occasionally, she looks back over her shoulder and sees Sly eating cookies that the new fellow, Alyndar, seems to never run out of. She smiles to herself and to her "Big Brother".
Ael d'Gaiaim Thursday March 15th, 2001 10:16:24 PM
Ael introduces himself happily to Alyndar. "It is good to meet another scholar, and have the opportunity to travel with you. I am Ael d'Gaiaim; formerly apprentice to Gaiaus of Threshold, and scholar in the Magical Arts."
Upon arriving at the courthouse, Ael calmly follows the direction of those more experienced than him at such matters.
Ilsidur Thursday March 15th, 2001 10:36:00 PM
Ilsidur makes his way over and hikes himself up to sit on the bench facing the orcs. As the others move to sit down, he whispers, "Something doesn't make sense here. That orc Brod seemed honestly upset that we were working for Madame Chloe. The wildcard will be the bear orc. The champions seem to have been working for a number of weeks, but we all know that the bear orc can only just have arrived in town over the past few days. How did he get to be involved with the champions?"
Alyndar Friday March 16th, 2001 8:19:50 AM
Upon entering the courthouse, Aly gets a smidge more serious and follows everyone in, he sits between the 2 wolves and Luke, offering them pieces of cookies from time to time and scratching them behind their ears.
Lok Mufflefoot Friday March 16th, 2001 9:40:50 AM
Munching a cookie happily the halfling seems to be content that the whole matter would work out. He mumbles to Alyndar through happy bites "missed you aly!". When they enter to courtroom he appears to try to maintain a serious demeanor but it is obviously difficult for the halfling. He tries to concentrate on a few pieces of grass he picked along the way playing with them by twining them and untwining them. Still a half giggle comes up from somewhere. A sudden urge to tickle Sly comes upon him and the halfling uses the grass tickler he has just made to do just that occasionally tickling the poor boys hand stealthily, hoping for somebody else to share his inability to be serious at appropriate times.
Uteva Friday March 16th, 2001 5:08:27 PM
Teva sits beside Ilsidur and answers him in a hushed voice. "And how did he find us so quickly, if not by chance?" She remarks, more loudly, "Did I tell you that I've been composing a comedic ballad? It's about a foolish and cowardly orc who picks fights and runs away."
Monitor Faston (DM Lee-Anne) Friday March 16th, 2001 6:25:17 PM
The orcs wear expressions ranging from Brod's puzzled frown to Bear's angry glower. The brutish orc's companions edge away from him when Uteva makes her comment.
Monitor Faston enters through a small door at the front of the room, followed by a priest of Lemiac. The court monitor appears much more dignified this morning, with his socks matched and his beard combed. He takes the chair at the front of the room and raps on the table with a fingertip. The thrumwood's deep tone reverberates through the room.
Faston clears his throat. "We have two matters before us this morning: the robbery of Madame Chloe's shop, in which no charges have been laid, and the formal grievance filed by the Champions Protector 452. As the two cases may be linked, we will handle them together."
"I have reviewed Captain Berru's report and my own notes. I understand that Madame's deceased guards were unable to identify their killers?"
The priest nods briefly, and Faston continues. "Then we will proceed with the magical questioning of Madame Chloe's temporary employees."
Again, the priest nods. He steps forward and draws a slim, gold-embossed tablet from within his robes. "I'll ask each of you to step forward in turn and place your hand on Lemiac's sacred tablet. By his holy grace, it will allow me to recognize any falsehoods you may speak."
He holds out the tablet and waits for the first person to follow his directions, then asks, "Were you involved in the vandalism of Madame Chloe's shop, or the death of her guards? To your knowledge, were your confederates? Please describe your experience of last night's conflict with the Champions Protector 452."
He questions each of the party the same way, excepting Alyndar.
Sly Foxx and Luke Saturday March 17th, 2001 1:33:40 PM
Sly grabs Loc by the head and gives him a rubs his knuckles against his head (in a playful way). When Sir Thomas gives the both of them a very stern look. Sly let's go and sits up strait. Whispering to Loc #Get you later.#. When the monitor enters the room. Monitor Faston tells them the question he want answered and a summery of what happen. Then holds out the tablet to Sly. Sly puts his right hand on the tablet. "as for question #1. NO we were not involved in the vandalism of the shop. question #2 NO we had nothing to do with the death of Madame Guards. Question #3 NO We were doing what Madame was paying us for. My summery of what happen is: By the time we (the party) arrived at the warehouse it was twilight. We all agreed that the Elves with low light vision, would take the first watch and that was Brother Trace, Little Sister Altemia and her Two wolves, our Dwarfen Priest Ilsdur, my dog Luke and I. The second shift would take over at dawn. So Sir Thomas, Ael, Utiva and Loc went to bed. According to Madame Chloe, she wanted us to protect the inside of the warehouse, and the grounds outside and around the warehouse. About 2 or 3 hours into our shift. I (Sly) was horning my sword by a torch, and Ilsdur was reading his Book. Ilsdur was in back, passed the middle and I was sitting on one of the tables about 15' from the front doors. When I heard a noise, Very faint but something hit either the wall or the farside of the door. I then yelled to Ilsdur that I thought I heard a noise. Got up and went and open the door about 6 inches and there looking back at me was an Orc. I yelled to Ilsdur But no sound, my dog Luke drop to the floor. I had my sword in my hand, I twirled giving my self more momentum and struck the orc. I think I put the torch in the chain the was hanging there or a hole. Then I got hit once, but turned and hit the other orc. I got hit again and saw two orc slip into the warehouse. I remember going outside seeing the wolf laying on it's side to my right, to my left I saw that big Orc (pointing to Bear) drop Trace and yelled something, But I could not hear anything. Then Captain Berru came onto the scene, and they stop their aggression, and put on an innocent face."
Sir Thomas (Ceil) Sunday March 18th, 2001 12:33:21 AM
And then it was Sir Thomas turn. He rises from his seat, squares his shoulders and without hesitation puts his right hand on the tablet. He looks into Monitor Faston eyes and answers all the question "As to vandalizing the Shop, the answer is NO. As for the death of Madam Chloe's guars, The answer is NO. As for the question to anybody in our party being confederates to this plot, the answer is NO. We met Madam Chloe at the Frosted Glass and the Maitre de' Rigno, He also told us that the Uncle,Misieus Alphais was away to organizing a search party to find his nephew Maurice. After the introduction, Madam Chloe sat with us at the table. Madam offered us a place to stay, because we would have trouble finding rooms for the night. She said that she a suitable place that we might stay for the night, if we were willing to guard it for her at night. She said that she was going away for a few days. She also said that she had two guards in the shop, But did not entirely trust them. And she also said She was having trouble with vandalism lately. The guards were to handle the inside of the Shop and we were to handle the warehouse and the outside parameter of the shop and grounds. WE the Party voted Yes to this job and we were to be paid Two chip to start then one chip there after. After rarefying the contract between us, Madam gave us the key stone and our employer's cards of hers. Madam gave us two small white disk, to the shop I think, and two gems- one purple warehouse and one red gem to the shop doors. We finish our meal, and was off to the warehouse. It was dark out side, I guest to elves this was twilight. We open the doors to the warehouse and went in, Uteva took the lamp and oil. She lit the lamp, I don't remember and we all went to the apartment and stowed our gear. The first shift to guard was Trace and his bird, Altemia with her wolves, who were to patrol the outside, Sly and his dog and Ilsidur patrolling the inside. The rest of us went to bed and slept. I was aroused by Ilsidur wailing, I could not make out what he was saying. I hop out of bed (without my pants), grab my sword and went to investigate. I saw two Orcs inside the warehouse (Sir Thomas points to ORC # 7 and # 5), And there was two more Orc hitting on Sly in the back. Sly had taken care of one of the orcs, and my Boy here, got that one on the backswing. I got out of the warehouse door. I recognize him (Pointing to Bear) as he (Bear) Dropping Trace to the ground and sounding retreat. All the Orc then bunch together, standing in the street holding out their empty hands. I don't know where the weapons crossbows went? Or even that snake of theirs went? That when the Good Captain arrived.
Ilsidur Sunday March 18th, 2001 9:14:23 PM
Ilsidur steps up and takes the tablet. "I will hold your tablet to recognize the truths of what I am saying, but I swear only to my Lord Marmathon Dur."
"I was not involved in the vandalism of Madame Chloe's shop, or the death of her guards. To my knowledge, neither were my confederates."
"Madame Chloe had hired us to guard her warehouse, giving us employment that would let us stay in the city. After dark, I was on watch inside the warehouse with Sly Foxx, here, and two of my partners were on watch outside the building. Sly said he thought he heard something outside, and opened the door. Five orcs crashed through the door, and attacked Sly with edged weapons, axes and daggers. One of them cast a spell that dropped Sly's pet dog, Luke, to the ground. I fired a crossbow at one, then charged forward near Sly, in time to hear one of the orcs call for his buddies to stop fighting and withdraw. I cast hold person on one of the orcs, to make sure we had at least one orc to question. Then the city guard showed up, and now here we are."
Ael d'Gaiaim Sunday March 18th, 2001 10:33:53 PM
Ael stands to offer his testimony.
"I myself was not involved in either the attack and subsequent death of Madame Chloe's guards, nor the damage to her shop and property. I am fairly confidant than my companions were not either, but I can only attest to what I myself experienced.
"We were contracted as a group to guard the warehouse for a few nights. When these events occured, I was off-shift, and was woken halfway through the confrontation. I emerged from the room that we were sleeping in to see Sly here engaged in furious combat with several Orcs whom, dispite his skills, threatened to overcome him. I acted to defend him by placing a spell of sleep upon some of the Orcs. I then proceded with due haste towards the door; but by the time I reached it, the fighting was over and the guards were about to arrive."
Uteva Monday March 19th, 2001 1:03:51 PM
"I was not involved in any crimes in Chloe's shop, nor, to my knowledge, were my friends. I was asleep in the back apartment when the trouble started, and by the time I got the lantern lit and got out where I could see what was going on, someone had called out in orcish for a retreat." The bard smiles ruefully. "I'm afraid I missed most of it."
Monitor Faston (DM Lee-Anne) Monday March 19th, 2001 1:33:52 PM
The priest remains expressionless as the testimony is given, murmurring his thanks after each person speaks. He gives the Court Monitor a brief nod.
Monitor Faston leans forward. "I have an additional question for the two who patrolled outside: did you observe any sign of disturbance in or around the shop before the Northook Guards arrived?"
In the pause while the remaining answers are heard, Captain Berru leaves her seat and approaches Madame Chole. "Madame, do you have a list of missing items for me?"
Chloe purses her lips, shoots a glance at the orcs, and edges the guard closer to the party. She speaks quietly, "No, Captain. As far as I can tell, nothing is missing from my shop."
Sly Foxx and Luke Monday March 19th, 2001 2:21:48 PM
Sly's head turns to toward Trace and Altemia, and waits for their answer. But when The Captain Berru ask Madam Chole about the list. Sly was supprised that madam is so nervous and that glance she gave the Orc. Sly bends down and whispers into Loc ear,*Did you see that glance she gave the orc, and I cannot make out what she's saying to the Captain? Can you make it out?*
Sir Thomas (Ceil) Monday March 19th, 2001 2:34:09 PM
When Alsidur finishes his testimony and starts to go to his seat. Sir Thomas touches Alsidur arm, and Whispers to him,* Do you still have those magic cards? Maybe we should show them to the Gray Elf, after all he's lived longer than the rest of us.* Then Sir Thomas leans back in his chair, and half listen to the testimony of Trace and Altemia. But his thought are mostly on that strange horse, and that horse wanted to be his or was he dreaming?
Alyndar (Inn) Monday March 19th, 2001 5:43:47 PM
Throughout the hearing, and the statement taking, Aly watches and listens intently to everything, especially the expression of who we call Bear.
Ilsidur Monday March 19th, 2001 11:13:02 PM
"What, nothing is missing? That makes even less sense. Why would someone break into the shop and not steal anything? Maybe they were looking for something, and didn't find what they were looking for?"
Then he leans over and whispers to Trace and Sir Thomas, "I remember Ael saying that all of the broken glass was on the outside of the shop, and none was on the inside. That indicates that the window was broken from the inside, out, and that would indicate an inside job. Since nothing was stolen, is this whole thing a setup? If we don't find out any solid answers with this investigation, I vote we have a private meeting and try to figure out what is going on."
Uteva Tuesday March 20th, 2001 1:34:32 PM
Perplexed, Teva cocks her head at the the Northook Constable and lowers her voice to match the others. "Captain who questioned the dead thugs? What were they asked, exactly?"
Monitor Faston (DM Lee-Anne) Tuesday March 20th, 2001 2:04:46 PM
The Court Monitor listens gravely as the remaining party members give their evidence. "Very well. I have only one question remaining, this time for the Champions 452. Why the use of spells of Silence?"
The well-spoken Brod stands to answer. "Simple. We hoped to keep the supposed intruders from giving warning if they had help nearby, at least until we knew what they were about."
Finally Faston seems satisfied. He pronounces, "Very well. In the matter of the break-in at the shop, I find that there is not sufficient evidence to lay charges. The Northook Constabulary are to continue their investigation." Captain Berru returns his nod.
"In the matter of the formal complaint, I find that Madame Chloe was remiss. The Champions Protector 452 have legitimate grievance in this case, and are granted Right of Challenge. Madame, do you wish to retain these others as your personal champions?"
Mutely, Chloe shakes her head, and the man continues. "As they caused the injuries and deaths among the 452, and as her only personal proxies, Madame Chloe's temporary employees are remanded to meet the Challenge. It will take place in the Madame's warehouse, between sunset tonight and the following dawn. Captain, you'll see to preparing the area." Briskly, the Monitor thumps his thrumwood table again, then retreats through his door, followed by the priest.
The orcs look triumphant. The massive Bear, who had been frankly returning Alyndar's stare, turns to point a finger at Sir Thomas. "Tonight, little man," he sneers. The 452 file out of the court.
Sly Foxx and Luke Tuesday March 20th, 2001 5:30:43 PM
Sly asking of Sir Thomas,"Did you see that? He has the biggest brass spine I have ever seen." Then Sly turns ti Loc,"I don't know but do you think that Madam Chloe is scared of something? or DID she help set us up from the beginning?" Then turns to Uteve," Uteva has the right question. Who did question the dead thugs? . Well, what ever we decide I'll be behind all of you."
Altemia, Tara, and Kevil Tuesday March 20th, 2001 5:58:58 PM
Altemia looks around, a look of puzzlement on her face.
"Madame Chloe, I don't understand something. Maybe I'm the only one and will seem a bit silly for asking, but could you explain just what they mean when they say "Challenge"? It sounds to me like we are going to have to fight them. Am I right?"
Alyndar Tuesday March 20th, 2001 6:24:42 PM
At the sound of tha gavel on the desk Aly stands, and gives Bear a wide mischevious smile. He then turns and with the others files out of the courtroom.
Ilsidur Tuesday March 20th, 2001 7:17:05 PM
A huge grin splits Ilsidur's face. He moves over and claps Sir Thomas on the back. "Well, young Sir, it seems that you will get your chance for revenge after all. Looks like Aly rejoined us just in time."
Then he moves over to the captain, and says, "Captain, what exactly are the rules for this combat? Do the orcs have to bathe first? I would hate to get any of their stink on me in this 'Challenge'. What exactly do you need to do to prepare the warehouse for the Challenge?"
Ael d'Gaiaim Tuesday March 20th, 2001 7:46:12 PM
Frowning, Ael listens to the conversations around him, at least those he can hear. Turning, he whispers to Ilsidur: "This business about proxies suggests that citizens here are used to taking their revenge by subtle means...Either Madame Chloe is involved in something she'd rather not be, or else she has...how do you say, 'competition'?"
"I had no idea that coming here as a scholar would result in so much combat. In any case, I shall hold myself happy to 'work' with you all in this matter."
(OOC: I assume Ael won't have to go into combat with partial memorization? Guess he will nap for awhile... ;)
Sir Thomas Wednesday March 21st, 2001 1:28:42 AM
Thomas simply sits and stares evenly at the large "bear"; he does not acknowledge the open threat. When the orcs have left, THomas stands and approaches Captain Berru. (OOC: guy or girl?) "Pardon me sir, but I have some questions to raise and many many problems with the way we have been treated. It seems to me that we are being treated as offenders. We were merely protecting ourselves. Listen to the account, a silence spell and then darts being fired. That is an attack and anyone who will not defend themselves from an attack won't be around to describe his mistakes. We have done nothing wrong. We returned force with force. Question two. May we file formal grievance against the orcs? I mean, they used poor skill as PROTECTORS to approach this situation and in fact caused the conflict with their own action. I mean, listen to the word, protectors, they are not the Attackers 452, or the poor judgement 452, or the Evil intent 452, they are the protectors 452. Protection sometimes involves tact, and they used none. It seems to me that they are responsible. I would like to claim formal grievance against them for the pain they cause us. I would like to know how they could possibly find out who Trace was by silencing him and putting him to sleep. I am very angry at the way we have been treated as accused. Your city may be clean sir, but you have much to learn about Justice. THese creatures are evil. I have seen their souls and they have evil intent radiating strongly from them. Do not trust what they say." Thomas speaks more clearly and loudly to gain attention, "I claim formal grievance against the Champions 452 as an emplyoee of Citizen Madame Chloe. They caused our party damage and caused the death of their own comrades through poor judgement, which we can not be blamed for." Thomas stares at the Captain with a very stern and serious look upon his face. Then in a more conversational but stern tone, "Educate me good sir about what your god Lemniac supports in his teachings. I would care to know what kind of god that rules such a society as this would allow his followers to trust treacherous and evil orcs. Then I would demand that you accept my claim of grievance because my Lord Alemi DEMANDS it. And my Lord Domi supports it." Thomas has much much more to say, but finally gets control of his anger and emotions so that he is able to hold them in check before he starts to berate the skill of the captain himself in his investigation and other inadequacies that have presented themselves to the paladin.
Lok Mufflefoot Wednesday March 21st, 2001 7:23:27 AM
The halfling who had remained quiet except for his short abrupt answer answers this judgement by saying loudly. "And what of this bear orc selling your citizens into slavery? What of that? They obviously are trying to get revenge on us, and will even cheat in this fight methinks. But apparently you approve of the your citizenry being sold into slavery and used as sacrafices." The halfling who had changed from a happy little being seethes at the injustice of these orcs not having been brought to justice. What was the matter with these people. Well, if a challenge it was to be, he'd make sure there was something nasty waiting for them.
Uteva Wednesday March 21st, 2001 3:03:34 PM
"Lok, I think you'll get no answer from that quarter." The bard lays one hand on the halfling's shoulder. "We've heard again and again that the authorities here don't care about crimes outside the city."
Captain Berru (DM Lee-Anne) Wednesday March 21st, 2001 3:06:01 PM
The stern woman almost cracks a smile at Ilsidur's comments, but she quickly sobers. "It was Lemiac's priests who questioned the dead thugs. I've seen the transcript -- they were thorough. If Lemiac is truly your Lord, Sieur," she says to Sir Thomas, "then, whatever name you call him by, you will know more of his ways than I. I'm a soldier, not an educated knight. My duty is to the Law, but I have followed it long enough to learn that sometimes, the Law doesn't serve Justice as it should."
Captain Berru stands tall, and spears each of you as she talks, much as she might address her troups. "Today, the Court Monitor used the evidence at hand and his understanding of the law to determine that the combat was the result of a misunderstanding, and both groups acted as they should. The person at fault was your employer. If you wish to file grievance against her, then you may. I will warn you that, should you be granted right of Challenge, it will fall to the 452 to meet that Challenge for her.
"If any of you feel ill-used, I suggest that in the future you avoid contracts that stipulate magical questioning. We'll prepare the warehouse for Challenge by setting memory stones in place. There will be no need this time for questioning." Then her eyes soften. "I don't trust the orcs, either. Watch your backs tonight, and Domi guide your arms." With a short salute, Berru takes her leave.
Madame Chloe looks sad and worried. "Can you all spare me a little more of your time today? I'd like to show you something before our good Captain gets back to the warehouse, and I have a question to ask in private." Chloe begins to retrace the short route to her property, moving at a fast clip.
"On the way, I can try to answer your questions. You're correct that the Challenge is a combat. All the conflict must take place within the warehouse, and may not begin until sunset. Only necessities and personal items may be moved into or out of the building until the Challenge is over. The 452 may make their assault at any time during the night."
Alyndar Wednesday March 21st, 2001 6:04:55 PM
Three Questions:
1. to the group: Where do I store my stuff including my oxen and cart for it to be out of the way?
2. to Madame Chloe: Since we are defending your honor, do you have anything that might aid us tonight?
3. to the group including Madame Chloe: who wants a Cookie?
with that, Aly follows the group.
Sly Foxx and Luke Wednesday March 21st, 2001 7:10:20 PM
Sly walks with the party back to the ware house, And he looks worried. To Madam Chloe and the group, "I will be doing my best tonight as I did last night. But I don't have the weight that those Orc do. I was very lucky and could not use my spells last night. Now tonight they will be ready with every dirty trick they know." Then turns to Alyndar,"Dear Friend, would you do me a great favor? If anything should anything happen to me, tonight. Would you take and keep my Spell Book (witch belong to my mother) and when or if you should meet my Sister Ruby, give the book to her?" Then to the rest of the party, he tell them,"As for the rest of my things. You all can split my thing among you." Then bends down and pets Luke, "I hope you can find a good home with lots of cookies."
Ael d'Gaiaim Wednesday March 21st, 2001 9:06:35 PM
"I would certainly like a cookie!"
While munching, Ael smiles and says "Well, if I'm to be of use during the challenge, I'd best grab a nap before tonight."
(OOc: Assuming that he can rememorize, I'll take the same spells, but will fill the 'reserve' slot with another sleep spell.)
Sir Thomas Wednesday March 21st, 2001 10:24:26 PM
Thomas does not like the answer that the captain returns, but now understands that he will get his fight with Bear. "So when is the challenge over, Chloe? Until all of one party have perished or is there a time limit, sunrise maybe? Is this a sick game in your society? Can they get help, or can only the members involved in the first attack be involved now? Are there rules we should know about? Can Alyndar help us even though he was absent for the first meeting?" Thomas asks question after question of Chloe, fired by his anger at the laws of this city. "Also, if we are to fight, I will need a well made shield. Chloe, this is not a request and I only have gold to trade, not chits. I have not had an opportunity to replace the shield that Bear's brother broke. I will fight better with it I'm sure." Thomas takes time to address the group also, "I still have my healing powers for today. I could use some, but if others require assitance, my help is theirs before I take it myself." When they arrive to the warehouse, Thomas goes into defensive planning. "We will need a better fortification plan than last time. I think we can use those carts to help fortify the door of the warehouse. We can position them so that even if they get the door open they can only get in one at a time. Then we will have number advantages as they enter, and that will be important because they have more fighters than we do. We have more spell casters though. I will stand in their way with Pryte-Honos, my new friend. If we can get them to come only one at a time then I think Pryte-Honos and I can hold them off for the rest of you to weaken them considerably with spells. I am willing to pay any price for you, my friends." Thomas smiles lovingly at his group of friends and then continues, "Ael, we will certainly need that alarm spell of yours. I think that if you find a place in the street that will tell us if someone is approaching it would be a judicious use of the spell. We could also use as many defensive spells or protection from evil spells as we can get cast."
Ilsidur Thursday March 22nd, 2001 12:24:55 AM
"Sir Thomas, your approach makes sense assuming the orcs attack through the door only. There are a number of windows around the top of the warehouse that would allow access as well. It might work to try to funnel the main access through a small opening at the door, but I imagine we will have to deal with attacks from more directions than that, somehow. In the last combat in the warehouse, it took me a long time to travel across the floor to where the orcs were. However we set up, we should stay together as a group. That way, we can bring our combined force to bear as a group. Lok may want to remain away from the rest of us, to allow surprise attacks.
"I suggest we form up together at the back of the warehouse, behind some cover. That way, the orcs will have to move across the floor towards us while we throw spells and missile weapons at them. The bear can only attack close-up, and it would help to have him look like a pin-cushion before he can bring his strength to 'bear' on us. What say we drag the large crate a little more to the rear of the warehouse, and bring the two wagons in front of it. We can wait behind the wagons, and move out if needed. That should also give enough room on the floor for you to try out your new pet, Sir Thomas."
"Madame Chloe, similar to Sir Thomas' request, you and I briefly discussed my purchasing some armour from you. At the time, you suggested we deal with my request after you return from your trip. I would strongly suggest we discuss that now, as this combat will likely be very difficult, and whatever increased protection I can get would be very much appreciated. I have a fair amount of gold to spend."
Altemia,Tara, and Kevil Thursday March 22nd, 2001 9:00:09 AM
Altemia looks thoughtful.
"I don't know Ilsidur about us being so close together like that. Those orcs are a little too eager to use their sleep spells. With us that close together, they might be able to get all of us.
Perhaps we should be near each other, but not all bunched up. We could spread out a bit as well so that they are a bit confused about the location of the attack, too."
She reaches down absentmindedly and scratches both wolves behind their ears and under their chins and she thinks more on the upcoming battle.
Uteva Thursday March 22nd, 2001 12:12:31 PM
"Sly, that is enough of that." Teva grabs her friend's arm and gives him a little shake. "You're not going to die and neither are the rest of us. I refuse to give Bear the satisfaction. We're all survivors, and if we prepare carefully and keep our heads, we will succeed. Now grab yourself a cookie and start talking tactics with the boys."
Tugging Sly along, the bard catches up to Alyndar. "I'd like one of those cookies, Aly. We've put our horses up at the stables next to the Frosted Glass -- why don't we see if they'll take your cart? We have to go out to the city offices today, anyway. We have a fee to pay, and most of us have to show proof of employment."
Lok Mufflefoot Thursday March 22nd, 2001 3:32:02 PM
As the planning process starts Lok seems to be thinking hard. He says abruptly "They all came through the door somehow before, and they will again. We booby trap that door and all take up different ranged attack stations at different distances from it spread out. Perhaps I can use some lampoil to douse some cloth in front of the door to prepare for a surprise when they come in of fire." A look rather strange on the halflings small little face of anger and intensity seems to pass by. It is momentary, but the energy behind his words is still apparent to all nearby. "Or we could use the weapons from that table, and tie rope to the triggers of crossbows and fire maybe even five at a time." His random thoughts seem to trail off. He wanders over to the table for a moment to investigate what weapons there might aid them in the warehouse. When he returns he is calmer. The whole situation was quite ridiculous.
Chloe Confesses (DM Lee-Anne) Thursday March 22nd, 2001 3:59:20 PM
Leading the way back to the warehouse, Madame Chloe tries to keep up with all the questions. "You are welcome to use any of the equipment in the warehouse to meet the Challenge. If you survive, young Sir Thomas, we can discuss any shield that pleases you. Ilsidur, I'll show you the special pieces I have in the shop as soon as we're done here. There are more orcs in the 452 than you've seen, and they can register new members for the Challenge tonight. Because you are an informal group, they might have grievance against you if Alyndar helps you."
The lady walks between the guards and slides open the warehouse door, urging everyone inside. "First, I owe you an apology. I didn't trust the 452, but I had no idea they would attack outright. Ever since we hired them, they've been provoking Challenges and -- bullying us, all just within the bounds of the law. Now I believe they may be after my treasure."
Chloe points to the large crate in the middle of the room. "Below that crate is a trapdoor leading to an underground room. That is what I really hired you to protect," she says, pushing absently at her graying frizz of hair. "A very special suit of armour, in a trapped chest. There is a decoy chest, and both are protected by triple locks and other safeguards. Fire will flood the room if either chest is moved. I've mortgaged myself to make this investment. Please, take whatever precautions you feel are necessary to ensure its safety, but don't open either chest on pain of death. And do try to avoid burning down the building, if you can."
She pauses, studying each of you. "Will you agree to be my personal Champions? I really need the help, and it's clear that I can't depend on the 452. You would have to register as a Protector group. That would give you the advantage of official status."
Lok finds that the long tables are covered with shields and armour pieces of all sorts, neatly arranged by size and type. Besides the whip at Madame Chloe's waist, the only weapons in the building belong to his friends.
Sir Thomas Thursday March 22nd, 2001 4:41:15 PM
Thomas stops looking around the warehouse and ends his defensive contemplation to shoot a glare at their employer that would kill Alyndar's ox if looks were deadly. "I, for one, do not like how you have been dishonest with us. We did not know you, and yet we have sold ourselves to you out of convenience for both of our respective parties. So even though both of us benefited from this transaction, we were the only ones who really stood to lose anything. Our lives are much more important than your armor. We deserved to know! You need to tell us more about this challenge. I'm still quite unsure how they can attack us and then ask for grievance against us. I'm still quite unsure what will happen tonight. How do we stop the challenge. If this challenge means breaking my moral code then I am leaving town and you can deal with this on your own, or with however else will stay. I am a champion of justice, Alemi's Justice. I'll not stoop below that standard. You had better learn to be very honest and very thorough, and you had better do it quickly. We have preparations to make, apparently we have an errand to run, and we have supplies to get. I have just realized that I still ned to buy a saddle, bit, saddle blanket, etc." Thomas' anger is quite apparent in his face and body language, despite being painfully obvious in his words as he rants. He paces as he talks to allow his adrenaline to act upon his movement so that it does not consume him. He stares at the Dishonest employer for a second and then offers this last bit of information for her. "I will NOT be under official employment of you if you don't inform us better, and I won't be under official employment if this is challenge that you make sound all too common is dishonest act. Keep in mind that we have been up front with you about everything."
Thomas horse, Pryte-Honos, seems to snort and paw more than would seem normal. He too is glaring at Madame Chloe, and pacing in short distances behind the angry, young paladin.
Altemia, Tara, and Kevil Thursday March 22nd, 2001 4:42:41 PM
"Madame Chloe, being your personal Champions is something we would have to think about for a bit. But, if we did register, and register today, would that mean we could register Alyndar and have him help us?"
While speaking to Madame Chloe, she looks around the warehouse once again, to really get a feel for the place. Tara and Kevil flop down under the table and go to sleep. It is almost as if they are aware of the impending fight and want to save their energy.
Ael d'Gaiaim d20+12=15 Thursday March 22nd, 2001 5:08:21 PM
Ael frowns deeply as Chloe delivers the truth.
"I'd tend to agree with Altemia about registering. If we do so, what bounds would we be under? Again I iterate that I am a scholar and adept in magical theory, and not a combatant mage."
Turning once again to practical matters, Ael continues: "IF it does come to a fight, however, My spell of alarm will be ready. Since the Orcs are likely to use spells of sleep and silence; perhaps more...it would be most beneficial for us to spread out somewhat." (Rolling for Arcane knowledge) "I am fairly sure that their sleep spells are limited in how much mental energy they can supress, but we may still be vulnerable. I know that I for one, am. My Master was most explicit in proving that fact." Ael grumbles at the memory of some past 'lesson.'
"I have at my disposal the ability to both detect and grant invisiblity. The effect of both spells is short, but I will prepare one casting of each; prudence demands it."
Sly Foxx and Luke Thursday March 22nd, 2001 5:12:41 PM
"I cannot believe this, I have a little story to tell you."said Sly, " Last night I had a dream, We older member of this party. It was about the Five Wise Ones. Do you remember Lady Faith, Lady Sorrow, Lady Justice, Lady Watcher and Lady Wisdom. It was lady Justice That was speaking. She said that we must show our Common goal. Remember (now Sly takes his right glove off and shows the Mark on the back of his hand. The broken pinwheel tattoo) and She said that we should call our group, Hmm something like The Guardians, or I know what The Wise Ones call us the first time we met them The Destroyers. Looking back that's what we have been doing. destroying evil. Look to your hands and see if you all have a mark on the back. That's the mark I'll paint on our shield." Turning to Alyndar, " Now I'm Hungry got something to eat?" said Sly with pleading eyes. Then to Uteva, he whispers into her ear, "Than-you dear friend."
Alyndar Thursday March 22nd, 2001 6:57:09 PM
So, let me get this straight. If I help, the orcs can file a grievance against the rest of my group? What a crock, i'll tell you this, when this challenge is over, my butt is out of this God forsaken city.
To the group: do I help or not? I say I do cuz i'll be dead before I stand by and let anyone harm my comrades.
*guess I already made up your minds* =)
Ilsidur Thursday March 22nd, 2001 10:31:19 PM
"Madame Chloe, as Sir Thomas has said, you have not been honest with us from the start. It certainly would have been helpful to know exactly what you needed to protect, so that we could have set up a better watch. The only reason that I personally am willing to champion your cause in this issue is we will get to fight a nemesis of our group, and kick some smelly orc butt. Now, if we register under a name, can we add to our original group, and let Alyndar take part legally? It seems that what we need to do."
"As for the group name; it seems that we spend a lot of time dispensing justice: freeing slaves, protecting innocents, and even using major magic to raise innocents wrongly slain. Could I suggest a name such as The Justiciars? Once we settle on a group name, let's include Alyndar in the registration, and then he can take part legally."
Sir Thomas Thursday March 22nd, 2001 10:53:25 PM
"About our name, in the teachings of Alemi there is a saying. It is in the old tongue that faded from use long ago. It was a common use among priests in their day. The saying is this: IST THAERE LEOHT JUSTITIA. It translates into: Be the light of justice. Thinking along the same lines that Ilsidur is, I thought it might be fitting to be named Leoht or Leoht Justitia. I feel that WE are the light of Alemi's justice even though we all don't follow his teachings per se. We all feel the same way about these matters, and so in my eyes we all make Alemi proud. That is my input." Thomas quiets and considers the other good input.
Lok Mufflefoot Friday March 23rd, 2001 1:06:37 PM
On the matter of Alyndar Lok pipes up "They'll bring everything they have tonight. Won't be any left to file a grievance. Specially if Alyndar acts as a hidden archer or some such. I don't intend on letting them keep bringing more and more till they finally kill us. They got much closer this time."
"As for strategy, let me see what dirty tricks I have up my sleeve."
When he is sure that everyone has done everything they need to do outside the halfling alone begins stacking the heaviest objects he can find, behind the warehouse door. He is heard muttering "Let em work to get in here at least." A sigh is heard from him as he keeps stacking.
Lok inspects his stacking, and begins to look at the floor outside of his blockade carefully to determine it's flamability. The halfling seems so intent on worrying about different ideas he seems quite withdrawn.
Ilsidur Saturday March 24th, 2001 9:53:20 AM
"Sir Thomas, why don't you grab one of those large shields on the table and try it out? I'm sure Madame won't mind you giving it a test tonight, right Madame?"
Uteva Sunday March 25th, 2001 9:52:54 AM
"I want to be sure that we have the building well lit tonight." Teva glances at the sunlight streaming through the high windows at the back of the warehouse. She frowns thoughtfully. "The orc's have a big advantage over many of us in the dark, as Sir Thomas found out. Altemia, did you say last night that you have some magical lights? We can pick up torches or lantern oil when we go out. Sir Thomas, if you don't find time to purchase new tack for Pryte-Honos, you could use Cammaron's. Alyndar will need to stop at the stables anyway."
Madame Chloe (DM Lee-Anne) Sunday March 25th, 2001 10:47:50 AM
Surprised and disappointed, Chloe shakes her head. "I thought it was clear: none blame you for last night. The 452's grievance was against me. I acted with what I thought was reasonable caution, but I will understand if you feel you can't trust me. I believe that you can legally include Alyndar if he registers with you. I suggest you ask your remaining questions of the Northook Guard or at the Office of Champions."
The lady pushes herself away from the table and stalks to the door. "As I said, feel free to use anything in the warehouse, including the armour and shields. I'll delay my trip until this is settled, but I'm staying with a friend at the Mad Jester's Inn tonight. Ilsidur, shall I show you my special wares?"
Finding her scruffy-looking shop lad on the porch, Chloe sends him off to the moneychanger and enters her shop.
Sir Thomas and Pryte-Honos (Ceil) Sunday March 25th, 2001 6:18:59 PM
Sir Thomas says "Very well them Madem, untill this disagreement is over. I'll pay for anything I take." The, Sir Thomas turns to the rest of the group ans ask," Who is comming with me, beside Alyndar? Must we all go to Northook Guard or the office of Champions to register our party? And we still have to agree on a name." Sir Thomas takes a saddle and blanket off the table and puts it on Pryte-Homos, puts a bit in the horse's mouth. Then puts a rope around the nose ring of the Ox. Then they were off tho register.
Sly Foxx and Luke Sunday March 25th, 2001 6:26:16 PM
Sly listens and watches Sir Thomas hitches up,and start out the wearhouse door. When Sly get (what he thinks is a bright IDEA,runs after Sir Thomas. "Hey! wait up, I have a perfict name for our group, how about calling ourselves 'The Justice League'?",
Ael d'Gaiaim Sunday March 25th, 2001 11:09:33 PM
Ael yawns and smiles at Sir Thomas, "I am in favor of The Guardians, or Justicars...but unfortunately, when I think of justice, I usually think of loss of Compassion. This Alemi you speak of; his Justice is Compassionate?"
If he must, Ael will also go to the office to take care of the mindless paperwork.
He continues to talk strategy, especially how the group's (seeming) magical advantage could, when paired with stealth, give victory.
Ilsidur Monday March 26th, 2001 12:52:47 PM
Ilsidur follows Madame Chloe to the shop to discuss wares and prices. As he leaves the party, he says, "I will be back once I have looked at what Madame Chloe has to offer. I agree, it is probably best if we don't concentrate ourselves too much in one area. I just remember in the last combat, it took me what felt like forever to get to the orcs by the doors. I don't think we can be ready for any possibility, we just have to make a plan that makes the most sense and stick to it."
Altemia, Tara, and Kevil Monday March 26th, 2001 4:01:10 PM
Altemia follows along behind Sir Thomas on the way to register the group.
"I know that we still haven't really decided on a name yet, but I like Guardians. Justicars just sounds a bit too high and mighty to me."
Alyndar Monday March 26th, 2001 5:11:53 PM
Aly nods and follows with Sir Thomas. Along the way Aly talks with Sir Thomas and whoever will listen to him.
I understand the importance of the correct name, but, not everyone in the group will take to the notion of being put into the frame as Lawful and Good, there will come times when we will be forced to act out of the Law and Good to overcome obstacles and bring evil doers to Justice. In lieu of that, we need a name that is Nuetral in meaning. I do not have any ideas for names, al I am thinking about at the moment is the upcoming confrontation and what I can do to help us win it with the least possible casualties on our part. But I can tell you this, we must come up with a name that fits us correctly, not what fits a few of you. A name that ALL of us will agree to and feel comfortable being a part of.
Aly walks on a bit in silence, stops and says: Wait, how about this for a name, a very simple name, is Nuetral in it's meaning. Defenders Inc. I mean, look at everything we have done. It has always been us to the rescue, defending those who couldn't defend themselves. Defending the weak from slavery. Defending each other in times of need. I mean, if down the road someone was to see us and stop, turn to their friend and point at us saying: Isn't those the Defenders. I don't know about the rest of you, my step would pick up, my back would get straighter, my esteem would improve greatly.
Aly turns and follows the group again repeating the name Defender, Defenders Inc. over and over, seeming to like the name he is saying.
Uteva Monday March 26th, 2001 6:21:05 PM
"Catch us up at the ferry, Ilsidur. We can look around for a comfortable tavern while we wait for you. Labour Town seems much more our style than these fancy Southook places, anyway." Teva joins the others on their way to the stables.
As she walks, she studies the broken spiral blended in amongst the freckles on the back of her hand. "Sly is right. The ringing of the Chaos Bell is woven through the history and the future of this group. But I think we represent more than destruction, and I think that our achievements go beyond justice and defence.
"In DreMoria, we helped to settle years of righteous conflict by looking deeper for the emotional truth." Teva draws her hands in toward her heart, then spreads them wide. "That was a release, a healing. This land is sick with raiders and slavery and murderous cults. Even Hook City's complacent civility is but another symptom of a disease.
"We've started to doctor it -- with magic and faith, with skill and steel. We can choose our path, rather than letting Fate direct us. Let's go on as we've begun, and name ourselves to match."
Teva tucks a brown lock behind her ear. "I can't think how to capture that in a name. What heals?" The young woman begins muttering to herself. "Herbs, skill, the powers of the gods, potions, tonics, balms. Bell, chime, ring, toll, note, peal, gong."
Office of Champions (DM Lee-Anne) Monday March 26th, 2001 6:40:49 PM
The efficient staff at the stables take charge of the ox and cart, and very admiring of Pryte-Honos. They offer to keep the stallion while errands are run.
The Hook City is bustling with activity at this point in the day, and the ferries are quite busy crossing and recrossing the river. A low, continuous roar reaches you from the multitude of voices on the Bridge far above. Ilsidur arrives long before the group finds a ride. At last, you set foot on the north shore, with helpful directions to the city offices from the ferrywoman's son.
Hook City's main administrative complex is housed in a massive complex of vaulted buidings just off The Causeway. Statues and signs are equally plentiful, and you easily locate the Office of Champions. Two clerks stand behind a basalt counter that separates the reception area from a vast space filled with ranks of tall shelves. A large signboard just beside the door displays 5 elaborate award placcards, and the pedestal beneath holds a thick ledger, an inkpot, and a fancy quill.
One of the clerks clears his throat. "How may I help you, sieurs and madam?"
Trace and Radiant Monday March 26th, 2001 10:52:10 PM
Trace finally speaks up after remaining quite for a while and trying not to move so much so that he wont feel the soreness in his ribs. "I think we should call ourselves "The Vindicators" and after we get this setteled we need to look for healing spells and potions as well as lighting up the wharehouse. I also would like for someone to put a healing spell on my stone in my sword, it would have came in handy when I was fighting earlier and we might even not have been worrying about that bear orc any more but none the less I think we need to prepare before sundown." Trace continues to stretch out his pain and strokes the feathers of Radaint. He is noticeing that Radiant is starting to devlope more of a personalty lately or he is just beginning to notice it. Trace then walks up next to Altemia and Sly and puts his arms around both of them, "Well are yall ready for round two. I suggest not splitting up the the animales, a concentrated attack on Bear is our best goal. I have learned that the fight goes much quicker once the main threat is vanquished. Sly, we seen that with Bears brother, the four armed bandit slave trader.
Sir Thomas and Pryte-Honos (Ceil) Tuesday March 27th, 2001 12:37:02 PM
After stabling the oxen and the stallion (Pryte-Honos) they leave to go to register them selves. When they get to the administrative building they enter. When asked If they needed help Sir Thomas said,"Yes, sieurs, where do I register our party to Champion one of your citizens?".
Sly Foxx and Luke Tuesday March 27th, 2001 12:52:38 PM
"Hi! Big Brother, It looks like the Bear will go for Sir Thomas first and I'll bet my last cp. that he'll go after you next. As it is we must make plans, because He's (Bear) is much too confident." As they are in line to register with all the others. " Just think of it those wolves, Luke here and your bird. HE HE bringing the Big Bad Bear." Then Sly turns to Altemia," Little Sister, We are going to have a ball. As long as we stay alive."
Altemia, Tara, and Kevil Tuesday March 27th, 2001 4:04:31 PM
Altemia grins at Sly.
"Fun, huh? I don't know if I like your definition on fun. But then again, when I was a kid we always had the most fun when there was a hint of danger in it."
Uteva Tuesday March 27th, 2001 5:04:14 PM
"Trace, I can't cast another healing spell until I've had a nap, but I do have quite a few healing potions to share out when we get back to the warehouse."
The bard's expression is thoughtful. "All these names seem so formal and dignified. There must be a simpler way to express all of what we are and hope to be. Maybe Sir Thomas has the right idea with his leoht justitia. Light of justice. Light can represent so many things: the light of justice; the light of truth; the light of faith and hope; light as ward and defense against the darkness, and light to cleanse and heal. We can include all those ideas by calling ourselves The Lights."
Teva pauses, and a smile brightens her eyes. "What about the Southern Lights? I've heard you see them in the winter sky further south, dancing shimering colour across the heavens as if in celebration. If it's not too presumptuous, we could call ourselves after them. Even though Trace and Sir Thomas are from the other side of the Wold, it's in the southern continent that we operate."
Ilsidur Tuesday March 27th, 2001 7:03:14 PM
Ilsidur nods at Uteva's suggestion, "I like the idea of Southern Lights. I too am from the Southern Continent, and lighting the way for exploration is certainly one of the tenets of my Lord Marmathon Dur."
Ilsidur moves up beside Sir Thomas, and addresses the clerk. "We need to register as Champion Protectors for the armourer Madame Chloe of Northook. Champion Protectors 452 have Challenged us formally to combat, and we want to make sure we are properly registered for the Challenge tonight."
Clerk at Office of Champions (Assistant DM Greg) Tuesday March 27th, 2001 7:34:26 PM
The clerk shuffles some papers on top of the desk, and pulls out two long forms. "Ah, yes," he says, "Captain Berru informed me you would be showing up to register. You are really supposed to see the clerk at the Office of City Registry to formally apply for working visas within 2 days of arrival. However, the captain seems to have taken a liking to you, and has convinced me to fill out all necessary forms here at my desk. You are lucky I am in such a good mood. Now, do you have a name for your Champion Protector group? If so, I will need to fill it in on the Champion Protection registration form. If not, I can assign you only the Champion Protector number 823. Either way, you will all need to wear these on your person, and on any shields you may own, at all times in the city."
The clerk turns and reaches in a chest behind him, and pulls out a number of tabards and shield covers with CP 823 embroidered on them. "How many of these will you need? I will add it to Madame Chloe's monthly taxes (he makes a note on the bottom of one form), and she can take up re-imbursment with you."
Then he looks up at Sir Thomas, "I assume you speak for your group? I need you to fill in this form, stating everyone's name, and have each person sign it or make his or her mark. That will give you the temporary working visa in Madame Chloe's name."
Once the party has filled in the first form, he pulls out the other form. "Now, you must fill out this form, putting your group name here, and listing all members here. Then each member must sign or mark beside his or her name. Once these forms are all done, you are formally registered, both in our marvelous city, and as official Champion Protectors for Madame Chloe." He makes another note on the bottom of the form. "I will add the fee of the registrations to the Madame's taxes as well."
"Now, I have taken the liberty of filling in the official Challenge form; I just need to add your group name." Then he starts to read from the challenge, "According to the proper rules of Challenge, the period will last from sundown of the date registered until sunrise the following day. During that time period, anyone registered with CP 452 can attack anyone registered with CP 823 at the Challenge location, and vice versa. Any attacks occuring after sunup, without another proper challenge in place, will be considered a violation of city ordinances, and as such will be dealt with accordingly. The location of the Challenge shall take place entirely on the grounds of Madame Chloe's armoury and warehouse, in Northook."
At the end of all this wonderful bureaucracy, the clerk hands the party a small sheet of paper. "Please read this at your leisure, it describes more about Champion Protectors." [OOC: I will e-mail this separately.]
Then the clerk looks behind the party, at a group of 4 dwarves dressed in plate armour, and says, "Next, please."
Trace and Radiant Tuesday March 27th, 2001 10:08:30 PM
Trace steps up and makes his mark on the forms mentioned and stands aside while the others do the same. "How about , "The Southern Guard". Trace then speaks with Teva as he palces his arm around her wiast, "Well some healing potion should be placed in key areas or on key persons that way we can heal and return to fighting. I think there will be a need of that tonight. We also need archers elevated along with spell caseters next to them." Whispering along with a little squeeze, "You stay at a safe distance and watch over us." Trace notices that his palms have become clamy and his stomach a bit uneasy. Maybe expectation for tonight or something else, he is not sure.
Ael d'Gaiaim Tuesday March 27th, 2001 11:22:06 PM
"My Master was once a member of an adventuring group; and it was from him that I took my sirname. At times such as this, I miss him, even though he was not what you might call...openly likeable."
"I find the Light of Justice agreeable as Southern Lights. But I feel that the final decision will not rest with me - you all have been working together far longer than I have known you."
"I did not know that you were from so far away Trace, Sir Thomas. I shall have to inquire more about your history later, if such questions are not offensive."
Sir Thomas and Pryte-Homos (Ceil) Wednesday March 28th, 2001 12:22:26 AM
"Ah! Yes, There is so many names, All very good ones"then speaks to Ael,"It makes no difference how long you been with us, it is important that you choose to be with us, Friend. All the time filling out the papers. Sir Thomas now tells the clerk," They are nine of us, Sir." Them proceed to list them. Ael d'Gaiaim - Altemice - Alyndar - Ilsidur - Loc - Sir Thomas Hurley - Sly Foxx - Trace - Uteva. "As for a name for our party how about Defenders of Light?" Signs his name on the list, then passes the list to the one next in line.
Sly Foxx and Luke Wednesday March 28th, 2001 12:30:54 AM
Sly picks up the pen and sign his name to the list, and hands the paper to the one next in line. Sly approaches Altemice and whispers,"Let's have some fun and ask our two cook if we have time to eat before the battle?"
Lok Mufflefoot Wednesday March 28th, 2001 1:33:11 PM
Seemingly back in high spirits the halfling nods appreciatively at Sly's suggestion. As they all prepare to become the Guardians or some such nonsensical group, the halfling pinches them from time to time or tosses a tickle. Loudly he pronounces "I will act as a protector with my four magical balls." He quickly does deft moves back and forth making the balls alternately disapear and reapear. "We are quite a tough lot, myself and these balls, but we also have a tender side." The halfling gets down on his knees and feigns kissing Sly's hand in a mock maid pose.
Uteva Nerine Wednesday March 28th, 2001 4:55:02 PM
Teva reads the forms over carefully before signing her name to each with a flourish. "It's very good of you to help us by doubling up," she tells the clerk, wearing a winning smile. "We've also an admistrative fee to pay, for having an extra entry pass issued. Would you direct us to the right office?"
Taking up the stack of tabbards, she passes them around, handing an extra to Sly. "For your admirer," she tells him, giggling at the Lok's antics. "We may have to take a sharp blade to that to make it fit."
Trace's she tosses at his head. "And you should know better than to suggest that I stand by and watch!" Teva's mock glare dissolves into her usual easy grin. "I'll play my part. I've a song I can sing that will strengthen us all against the orcs. And I have my bow. We can put archers and spellcasters on the stack of crates, on the roof of the back apartment, even on top of the big crate in the middle. Piles of smaller crates would give us some cover." The bard pulls the tabbard over her yellow-banded brown locks and settles it on her shoulders with a neat pat.
Alyndar Wednesday March 28th, 2001 7:38:28 PM
Takes the paper, reads it thoroughly, frowns at the name and shrugs then proceeds to sign his name.
Ilsidur Wednesday March 28th, 2001 9:04:22 PM
Ilsidur also signs the proper forms, grumbling about bureaucrats and self-importance and such. While signing, he says, "I can agree with any of names that include "light". Defenders of Light is fine, although I still prefer the Southern Lights. But how will we make a final decision? We could end up discussing this for days."
As Ilsidur is putting on the tabard, and slinging his newly-covered shield over his back, he says, "I agree with Uteva, we need to put the spellcasters and archers up high, behind cover, fairly centrally. Then we light the warehouse up completely with lanterns and torches, and the fighters and animals hide in one or two places to jump out and attack."
When Uteva mentions the extra fee, Ilsidur slaps his forehead and exclaims, "How dumb can I get? Madame Chloe fronted us 5 white chits to cover our administrative costs." He pulls a small pouch out of his belt, and looks up at the clerk, "How much is our total fee?"
Clerk at Office of Champions (Assistant DM Greg) Wednesday March 28th, 2001 9:05:30 PM
The clerk holds his hand up to the four dwarves, and says, "One minute, Armoured Four, I need to finish with this group first." Then he looks back at the party, and says, "With the extra entry pass, that will be 4 chits, total, please. You can pay me here, then please be on your way. Since you have not yet decided on a party name, you will be registered with the city as Champion Protectors 823. If you do wish to change your name, you must reapply here at this desk." He accepts the 4 chits from Ilsidur, then waves the party away from the desk.
As the party moves down the hall to exit the building, Captain Berru is enterring the hall from one of the side rooms. "We meet again, Champion Protectors ... 823." She smiles and adds, "I see you've formally registered with the Office of Champions. I imagine I'll see one of the orcs from CP 452 in here shortly to look at your sign-up list, so they'll have some idea of what they are facing." Then she moves down the hall back towards the Office of Champions.
Trace and Radiant Wednesday March 28th, 2001 11:07:33 PM
One more suggestion and then I will leave it alone. "The Defenders of the Southern Lights" Trace moves along with the others and suggest that they stop by and pick up materials needed for the nights battle. First aid and lighting and on the top of my list along with any extra armorment that may be found. "Other than that me and Radiant is ready for battle and don't worry Sir Thomas, Bear will not get to either of us alone this time. This will be his last fight, I promise."
Ael d'Gaiaim Thursday March 29th, 2001 7:49:54 AM
Ael signs his name on the paper with a flourish. "Well I gues the name point is moot for now...let's think about our strategy. "
Ael whispers to the group "But is it wise to discuss it here? The Captain suggested that there may be Orcs sizing us up. Can we maybe take advantage of that?"
Lok Mufflefoot Thursday March 29th, 2001 12:09:36 PM
Looking at the document carefully the halfling seems to squint as if trying to understand. Shrugging his shoulders and looking at his friends he signs quickly.
Sir Thomas and Pryte-Homos (Ceil) Thursday March 29th, 2001 1:45:09 PM
Yes! Trace, Lets go and pick up the supplies we will need for tonight." Then turn to Sly,"Sly help Loc whith these thing (holding the signs they just received)they seem a little big for him. Then catch up we us. You to Loc." Then walks away with Trace and the others.
Sly Foxx and Luke Thursday March 29th, 2001 1:55:04 PM
Sly Put his sign on,then takes up the sign for Loc and can see that he needs some trim and tucks here and there. "OK! my halfling friend, I'll need some needles, thread and a very sharp knife. Now! let's go shoping." They both walk off to catch up with the others.
Altemia, Tara, and Kevil Thursday March 29th, 2001 4:44:59 PM
Altemia looks through the document quickly and then signs her name. After signing she takes the tabard offered her and slips it on. As they are walking out of the building she turns to Uteva.
"Did you happen to get those sunrods off of my horse when you got the saddlebags yesterday? If not, I need to run get them. They'll come in handy this evening."
Uteva Nerine Thursday March 29th, 2001 5:35:33 PM
"I have sewing notions with me, Sly. And we did get the sunrods. How much light to they cast? Let's pick up, oh, half a dozen lanterns, and enough oil to keep them burning throught the night." When they reach the street, she politely asks passersby for directions to an appropriate merchant.
"Ael makes a good point about making plans out in the open." Teva gestures at the busy street. "Maybe we should wait until we're alone, like yester . . ." Stopped in her tracks, the young woman grabs at the sleeve of Alyndar's robe. She drops her voice to ask, "Aly, did you leave something behind with us when we split up? We found a little packet in a sack of feed."
As if she hadn't interrupted herself, Teva catches up to Trace and continues her previous line of thought. "So if we can't plan, we can settle this name problem. I like Southern Lights," and here she dimples at her own lack of modesty. "Defenders of the Light sounds rather grand for such a rough bunch, don't you think? I'd like a name that suits people who sleep on the ground as easily as in a bed. And don't worry, Ael; we'll corrupt you to our ways in no time." She winks at Altemia, who looks like she'd have no problem with such an activity.
"When I think of defense, I think of things like shields, thorns, spines, and mothers. Maybe we can use that in our name. Or for justice, a merchant's scales or Alemi's ruby red. Redthorn? Ruby Shields? Garnet Spines? I still think that 'Light' includes all those ideas of defense, justice, healing, and exploration." The bard worries softly at her lower lip. "Lightshield, Ruby Lighthorn, Scarlet Balance?"
Ilsidur Thursday March 29th, 2001 8:37:06 PM
Ilsidur hacks the bottom off the tabard, so his feet don't get caught. "I have never seen such a bureaucratic city! I wonder if the orcs need to get a permit to bleed and die?"
"Ael, what do you mean about using the orcs sizing us up to our advantage?"
He heads down the street with the party, following the directions to the merchant.
Going shopping (Assistant DM Greg) Thursday March 29th, 2001 8:49:39 PM
It is mid-morning, and the streets near City Hall are crowded with shoppers, busy functionaries, city guard, and others clearly hustling on some important business. Uteva manages to catch the attention of a large well-dressed man, who gives them direction to a local outfitter. "Sounds like you are looking for 'The Well-Shod Traveller'. Head east for three blocks and turn right; you can't miss it."
As the party makes its way to the outfitter, the low-lying clouds start to drizzle, and a number of colourful wood and cloth umbrellas pop up around the street. The party only manages to get wet.
As the party arrives at the location given in the directions, they see a large, two-storey rectangular building, with small door on the left side and a large set of double doors on the right side facing the street. There is a sign of four horseshoes hanging over the smaller doorway.
Upon entering the single doorway, the party is standing inside a single giant room, filled with shelves and crates, similar to Madame Chloe's, but not nearly so well organized. The store smells strongly of a number of odours, dominated by the smell of horse. Behind the counter standsa middle-aged halfling, sporting a large white beard. He smiles up at the party and says, "Travelling somewhere? My name is Parsack Filchner. How can I help you?"
Ael d'Gaiaim Thursday March 29th, 2001 10:50:38 PM
Still whispering, Ael says: "I wouldn't put it past them to be following us. I say that if we spot anyone orcly or suspicious, we let slip in some noticeable fashion that, say...Alyndar and I are being called away by...well, some magical authority or other, at a certain time tonight. Is there a possibility that we can give them a false story to manipulate when they attack? "
Frowning, Ael mumbles "Of course that all depends on them actually following us and how we deliver the 'message'."
Alyndar Friday March 30th, 2001 9:38:43 AM
Aly heads back to the clerk's office. He tells everyone he will meet them back at Madame Chloes in a bit.
He goes in and waits in line behind the dwarves. When it is his turn he inquires as to the list containing the roster of CP452.
After he reviews said list, he heads back to Madame Chloes to rest and prepare his thoughts for tonight's activities. AND to prepare tonights dinner as well. Having a fresh loaf of Bread and 2 Apple Pies made before napping.
Sir Thomas (clay) Friday March 30th, 2001 11:21:52 AM
Since Alyndar took first initiative on Thomas' plan to inquire about the 452, Thomas stays with the group to get supplies. "I need a horse saddle, blanket, bit, harness, etc. NO saddle bags though, and I need it all to fit a large war horse. THis is all of the supplies I need for tonight." Thomas places his order and waits patiently for the merchant to retrieve the gear and offer a price. He fingers his purse that contains only gold pieces, which seem to be worth next to nothing in this god forsaken city. As he does so his fingers rub across two round uneven objects that don't belong in his purse. He opens his purse to inspect them and discovers two gems. "Oh, I forgot that I had these also. Along with the keys, Chloe gave me two gems. They are the group's property I believe." THomas shows the gourp. Then addresses the group as he returns them to his pouch. "If the 452 can inspect our roster we can inspect theirs. Alyndar went to do that, and we should pick his brain as to what he saw."
"I too like the Southern Light name. It suits us and our purpose for walking the Wold."
"Trace, how much healing can your sword hold. I have my daily alotment from Alemi that I will give you. (OOC: 20hp to be distributed at my discretion) I too am in need of some healing before the battle begins tonight. (OOC 31 of 41 hp)" Thomas states the last comment while rubbing his chest. the spots where he has a bloody bandage where he was shot with the quarrel, and beaten with a mace.
In the stable, Pryte-Honos prances uneasily. He also snaps at the stable hands if they try to calm him. He does not harm any of them though, he simply keeps them away from him.
Sly Foxx and Luke Friday March 30th, 2001 3:23:53 PM
Thank-you Uteva, I think I have not only Loc to do, but Ilsidar too." said Sly as he tucks and trims Loc tabars. " Now don't we look pretty!" said Sly while pinching Loc cheek, then Sly grabs Loc and they wrestles on the ground. " Say! let's catch up to Ilsidur and take care of his tabard". they both get up and off they go.
Lok Mufflefoot Friday March 30th, 2001 3:43:05 PM
The halfling reminds everyone to buy a weapon good from a distance if they haven't already for the night's activity. He knew it would be a long night and staying as far away and getting hits off on the orcs would be their best chance. His ears drooped at the thought of close combat with the bear orc. Then smiling at Sly's work he inspects it and wears it proudly. Lok struts proudly for only a moment before he is tackled by Sly. He gigglingly tickles the boy a moment before nodding, and grinning at the thought of preparing the dwarves tabard. He was sure his knives were quite sharp and that he was very convincing. Perhaps he'd let them trim his beard...
Uteva Friday March 30th, 2001 4:36:42 PM
Joining Sir Thomas, Teva says, "No, we're not travelling, Sieur Flinder. Do you have lanterns and oil, in quantity? We'd like six hooded lanterns, and about fifteen pints of oil. And would you kindly tally your prices in coin and in chits?"
She waits until the halfling is out of earshot, then nudges the paladin. "Sir Thomas, aren't those gems Madame Chloe's magical keys? We don't want to be giving those away. Do you still have the chits Chloe paid us?" She reaches out to keep his hand against his chest. "And you should heal yourself. We'll need you whole tonight."
"Sly, how are you doing? And Kevil -- was he wounded?"
Trace and Radiant Saturday March 31st, 2001 1:30:04 AM
Sir Thomas, go ahead and heal yourself and my sword will take the rest. Thanks for your shareing and I guess the Southern Lights will work." Talking quitely to Sir Thomas, "I think we need to board up the windows and just keep two places that can be entered into the wharehouse. One in back and the other in front. We will lock the back and put a warn on the area leading to the back door so that we may concentrate on the front door. Everyone that has a missle weapon or magic will rain down on the intruders blasting through the front door and only resort to up close combat when they break our line. Maybe some sort of traps or swinging logs to fly at the front door assumeing that they will take the frontal assult. We also need to be aware of fire hazard. If they try and simply burn us out we need to have an escape plan and lighting once we get out. As you can see I can point out the varibles but as soultion is hard to come by. My one sure idea is, kill the Bear Orc as quicly as possible.
Ilsidur Saturday March 31st, 2001 2:47:20 PM
Ilsidur gets tackled from behind, and falls to the ground shouting, "Orcs attacking...mmpphh!" As the tabard is pulled over his head, he rolls over to see Sly pulling the tabard off, and Lok sitting on his belly. "What are you two doing? Get off me!" He grabs Lok and pushes him over. "Hey, don't let that knife get anywhere near my beard, or I'll shave your feet!"
Ilsidur gets up and dusts himself off, watching Sly sewing at the bottom of the tabard. "Don't waste your time with too much sewing. As soon as we deal with these pesky orcs, I plan to quit CP 823, and go back to being just one of the party again."
Going shopping (Assistant DM Greg) Saturday March 31st, 2001 3:07:40 PM
The halfling hustles off to the shelves, and comes back with a complete set of tack for a large warhorse, pushing everything on a small cart. The saddle, bridle, etc. are strong and serviceable, but unadorned. "These will work fine for the trails, but if you want anything more decorated, there are a few tack shops around town."
He takes the tack off the cart and piles it on the counter. Then he waddles off with the cart again, only to return with a wooden crate. He moves the crate onto the floor and takes off the lid. Inside are packed 6 hooded lanterns , and 15 flasks of lamp oil. "Now, who is paying for all of this? One white chit should cover the lot of it. Oh, if you want to use foreign coin, it will be about...let's see...95 gold pieces."
Alyndar at the Office of Champions (Assistant DM Greg) Saturday March 31st, 2001 3:23:25 PM
Alyndar enters the City Hall and makes his way to the Office of Champions. He has to wait in line to see the clerk, behind 6 young men dressed in rough clothes, carrying short swords. They seem to be adding their names to a list of Champions. Once they are finished, the clerk has Alyndar step forward. "You look familiar...Oh yes, CP 823. Please touch this stone for one second." He holds out a memory stone and has Alyndar hold it. Then he takes it back from Alyndar, concentrates for about 10 seconds, and says, "Now, how can I help you, Alyndar of CP 823?"
When Alyndar asks to see the roster for CP 452, the clerk smiles and says, "Of course, I am surprised you didn't ask for this earlier." He reaches into a drawer behind him, and pulls out a file. Then he takes out a page and hands it to Alyndar. The roster lists the group leader as an orc named Brod, and goes on to list another 18 orcs, all in the same handwriting. At the bottom of the roster, it appears that two names were added. The first name is Sprok, that Alyndar recognizes is Bear in orcish. The last name added is 'Void the Faceless One'.
When Alyndar returns to Madame Chloe's, the Madame is away on an errand, so houseboy lets Alyndar into the warehouse. Posted on the outside of both warehouse doors is a painted sign that states, "From sundown of this day until sunup tomorrow, this building, and an area 20' around, will be the site of a formal Challenge between CP 452 and CP 823. Enter this area at your own risk; the City holds no responsibility for any actions occuring in the Challenge area."
Sir Thomas Saturday March 31st, 2001 9:35:46 PM
Thomas pulls out 95 gp and places them in ordered stacks on a desk top as he does so. he recounts them aloud with the store clerk before feeling satisfied that the amount is correct. HE then begins to gather up what equipment he can carry. The horse gear first of course and heads for the stables to free his friend Pryte-Honos.
He pays whatever charge at the stable and saddles his friend. Pryte-Honos snaps at him for leaving him to the charge of incompetent stable hands, but Thomas just smiles and pushes the large animal's mouth away. He then rides back to the warehouse with a particularly straight back beaming with pride at his friend's grandeur.
At the stable he again looks around (OOC: how many windows and doors that lead in from outside?) He also takes inventory of the crates and carts they will have at their disposal to use in the defense. Then struck with an idea he begins to take inventory of other supplies like armor and clothes and brooms and mops and manequins? "We're dealing with a group of orcs with what seems to be only a few intelligent members. and they are going to come in stealthily, using silence and sleep spells, trying to catch us as off guard as they can knowing that we know they are coming. here's my thought. What if they attack, but it isn't us they attack. What if we draw them into the warehouse for a fight only to find no fight to be had. We can make it look like we have all of these traps and guard posts set up as if we are ready for them to come. And we can then hide in or on or around surrounding buildings. When they charge in they will be in a large group in this room, confused, expecting a fight, and unorganized. We will then have all of the cards in our hands. We can unleash our magic on the group and have surprise attacks on the Bear and Brod and any other Orc that seems to pose any form of intelligent leadership." Thomas gets very excited about his idea because it means many things to him. "We won't have to worry about actually keeping them out, or which way they will come from. In fact, we will want them to get in. I think there is a trashcan that Lok and Sly could hide in only two blocks down, and Trace has already stated that he can get on the roof of the apartment next door. he won't be able to see the door, but he'll have a wonderful veiw of a lot of the surrounding structures. We can set up these pieces of armor to look like sentrys. WE can make this broom look like a person. They will use their spells to do exactly what we want them to do. We will get early strikes at their leaders because of the surprise. THEY WANT us to be waiting in here for them.Let's use that to our advantage. " Thomas runs around pulling things together to illustrate his point. "And to top it off, I will act as the puppet master. I will stay in here with Pryte-Honos and a horn. I will act as if I am giving orders to the false sentries and someone in another area could be prepared to give a signal as will I give a signal. Either signal can begin our crunch on the orcs. This way, when they penetrate, I will be the only one at true risk from their silence or sleep spells and they will be at our mercy. They will be milling about or concentrating on me when we surprise them. they will be unorganized and clumsy. they will have to work hard to get organized. This is the plan I think we should follow. What are the weak points you guys see? I think it has many strengths." Thomas looks very excited about his idea and nods his head trying to get his friends' approval. "This can work with the least risk from the least amount of group members."
"Lok, do you think you can find the orcs while the sun is still up and keep tabs on them and their position without being noticed? We know they can be watching us. Why can't we keep tabs on them? We should. That way we will know for sure when they are coming which can give us another big advantage. If you don't think you can find them or think you will get caught, don't even go looking Lok. But if there is a chance of gaining this advantage I think you should go." Thomas is very excited to hear his friends' response to all of his ideas.
Sly Foxx and Luke Sunday April 1st, 2001 12:49:11 PM
"Hmmm! Taking the teeth out of their suprise attack? Making them use a lot of their magic for nothing? Hmmm! We need the suprise attack. Because you all know that they will not fight fair." Said Sly petting Luke. "The only that they will throw that Silent Spell first, and you Sir Thomas will not be able to speak. But if we could rig up some sort of alarm that Sir Thomas could set off inside the warehouse that could be heard out side the warehouse? I think it would work ....Hmmm! What do you think? Anybody have any other ideas ?"."Hmmm! Taking the teeth out of their suprise attack? Making them use a lot of their magic for nothing? Hmmm! We need the suprise attack. Uteva Nerine Sunday April 1st, 2001 6:10:54 PM
Teva sets her corner of the lantern crate down on a long table and studies the sign on the warehouse door before slipping back inside and shutting it behind her. "If we do wait outside the building, we'd better be careful not to attack while outside that 20' perimeter. That means we can't fire from across the street, for example. We also risk having orcs sneak up on us and taking us out one by one. Remember, they can see much better in the dark than most of us, nor can we all smell as keenly as Luke and the wolves. So if we should probably pair up for safety."
She considers the interior of the warehouse. "There are too many windows to board up in a hurry, but if you're worried about them, we could put some people in the rafters. Maybe with ropes attached so they can reach the floor conveniently. Some of you have potions for flying, don't you? And I still have that Invisibility potion that might come in handy. Which reminds me."
Teva fetches her pack and pulls out a double handful of potion vials. "I have enough healing potions for you each to have one." She fans the eight vials out on the table and taps the the dark-labelled one on the end. "This one is stronger than the others. Take whichever you want." ((OOC 7 CLW, 1 Cure Moderate 12th level))
Alyndar Sunday April 1st, 2001 9:53:41 PM
When Aly hears the others come back to the warehouse, he goes outside, helps them unload the stuff, relays what he found out at the Clerk's office and then excuses himself to lie down and sleep so he can rememorize spells.
Trace and Radiant Sunday April 1st, 2001 11:53:30 PM
Trace smiles, "I agree with Sir Thomas's plan but I also agree that we should also be inside the warehouse where there is plenty of light, more in the areas that we need there to be. We need to take up postions high to look down upon the windows and front door whith Sir Thomas directing decoys. But I think if we strat pickign them off one at a time at the the point of entry would be better. At last, I am a fighter not a general. Just show me my target and I will destroy."
Ael d'Gaiaim Monday April 2nd, 2001 12:41:19 AM
"I have scrolls which will allow me to float gently downword or climb like a spider for a few moments; enough to slightly increase my mobility if I am to sit in the rafters. And if we are up there, there are some advantages we can take."
The mage frowns, as is his habit, before continuing. "How much damage are they allowed to deal to the area of the challenge? Regardless of the circumstances, it is still MAdame Chloe's property. ...IF they are, in fact, allowed to take drastic action, such as burning us out, we should take appropriate precautions."
Altemia, Tara, and Kevil Monday April 2nd, 2001 12:09:09 PM
Altemia had been following along with the group thinking her own thoughts. She shakes her head as she returns to the current world.
"I'm sorry guys. Sometimes I do that. I was thinking about my friends up in the mountains and wondering how they were faring.
The sunrods will last for six hours Teva, and I can see 60' with them, but I think humans can only see about 30'."
She turns around to look at Kevil and drops down to look him over.
"It does look like he is in need of some help. I think he is going to need one of your potions."
She takes one of the lighter labeled potions and heads off to the apartment calling Kevil after her. In the apartment she gets a bowl and pours the potion in it for him to drink. After he finishes it she looks him over again.
"Looks like your almost up to form baby-boy. I think you just need to rest and then you'll be just fine. Come on."
Altemia and Kevil rejoin everyone. Kevil and Tara lope off to a corner to grab a bit of sleep.

"A fantastic idea" the halflnig giggles as Sir Thomas suggests he check up on the orcs. Taking a minor healing potion thankfully, the halfling salutes briskly and heads off full well knowing that someone out there would have an idea as to the Champions location. Hoping to find that information (gather information rolled a 7), and then if not, will just wander some to try to find the champions. Should the halfling find them he of course will move rather silently (rolled a 19) and stick to the shadows as much as possible (rolled a 16). He would try to figure out their competitions plans for the night.

"Sir Thomas, I agree that your idea has merit, but I don't think it will work. 1) All sanctioned combat needs to take place within 20' of the building. 2) If we spread ourselves out, they take us out one by one, or two by two. 3) Madame Chloe needs us to guard the room in the basement, and if we are all or most outside the building, how do we know that someone has not snuck in magically, and can steal the armour? 4) It took me a long time to cover the distance from one end of the warehouse to the other, so that by the time I reached the front door, the combat was almost over. If I have to travel any distance to fight, I will be really late. 5) Our best chance to beat Bear is if we can concentrate our firepower. Remember in the last attack, Bear was able to drop Trace because there was no-one there to support him? So, I think that we set up in the warehouse, mostly together, and bring our significant firepower to 'bear' as a unit."
When they enter the warehouse, Ilsidur points out a door in the side of the large central crate. He gets the warehouse gem from Sir Thomas, and uses it to open the door in the crate. Inside, the crate is empty, and there is a door in the floor. "I guess that door enters into the chamber that holds the armour."
"Now, I am going into the apartment to rest, and I suggest the majority of us do that as well. I expect to have to be up all night, until something happens. Unless you decide otherwise, I plan to set up a crate in front of the large central crate, and hide behind it with my crossbow ready. Then I can pop up and fire at the front door, or anywhere else around the building."
Back at the warehouse (Assistant DM Greg) Monday April 2nd, 2001 6:52:51 PM
As the party arrives back at the warehouse and is reading the posters, Madame Chloe returns from some errands. "I presume you have registered at the Office of Champions? I hope the money that I gave Ilsidur was enough to cover the fees. Now, I must take my leave to set up my journey. Again, I ask that you protect my investment, in the chamber under the crate. If I were to lose that armour, it would ruin me. I will be in the shop for about another two hours or so, then I will be heading to the Mad Jester's Inn for the night. Unless you have any other questions, good luck to you all, and I hope to see you all in the morning."
Lok on patrol (Assistant DM Greg) Monday April 2nd, 2001 7:05:59 PM
Lok spends the afternoon trying to find some sign of the orcs in CP452. Canvasing the local merchants, he finds that they appear to have disappeared sometime mid-morning. The merchants also complain in general about the way that CP 452 have been "protecting" them.
One example: "Those bullying orcs! They have charged me 4 times the going rate for weekly protection! Next door, the potter refused to pay the latest "installment", and arrived at the store the next morning to find the place trashed! We tried to prove it was the orcs, but they were too slippery to be able to pin anything on them."
Unfortunately, the orcs prove too elusive for Lok, and he cannot find any sign of them.
Trace and Radiant Monday April 2nd, 2001 10:42:42 PM
Trace moves equipment around on the first wagon to make a wall to help protect himself and then takes one of the lamps and sets it on a box in the corner away from the wall so that it can be lit when it becomes dark. He then hides another lamp close to the wagon in case the first one is broken he can light the next one. Trace lays down and sleeps before the battle tonight. (prepares "summon natures aly I")
Ael d'Gaiaim Monday April 2nd, 2001 11:08:55 PM
"I will be most comfortable in the rafters; I'm fairly sure that I can provide support from up there -- the beams are fairly wide. I'll just be sure to have my spell(s) running...just in case an orc gets lucky and knocks me down."
Rummaging in his pouch, Ael checks the placement of his puny scroll supply, bolt storage, and accepts a healing potion. "Thank you. I hope none of us will have to use these, but it's good to be prepared. Speaking of prepared...I think I had better have a couple buckets of water up there, in case the orcs try anything hot."
Ael will grab a nap in the apartment. "I'd better get some rest or else I'll be useless tonight. Someone wake me up about half an hour before they can attack. That way I'll have time to prepare my spells before they hit us, as well as get up there with sufficient preparations. Anyone want to join me up there with a bow and/or spells?"
Sly Foxx and Luke Tuesday April 3rd, 2001 5:27:49 AM
"Sir Thomas, I think your plan is very good. If you want me up on the Boxes near the door, that's what I'll do. If you want me some where else, that's what I'll do." Said Sly, "BUT, not outside. Madame Chloe want the special Armor protected and that is inside." Sly goes into his backpack to get some ration for himself and Luke, and then his blanket. Climbs the stack boxes (with Luke by his side) and will sleep with his bow and arrows and his sword. Thinking to himself *Thank goodness I read up on my spell this afternoon.*
Altemia, Tara, and Kevil d20+1=3 Tuesday April 3rd, 2001 9:55:25 AM
After settling the wolves in for a nap, she looks around the warehouse to find a good place for her to wait.
"I think I'm going to sit up there on those crates near the window. I'll try to hide in the shadows up there (Hide roll of 3), but I don't know how well I'll do. I can use my sling from up there before I come down. I don't think I'll go all the way up there, just half-way or so. I'm going to put Kevil at the box with the armor and have him guard the box. I think I'm going to let Tara roam around the warehouse on her own. She can move rather quickly, so she should be able to help wherever is needed."
Sir Thomas Tuesday April 3rd, 2001 10:09:08 AM
Looking a little dejected Thomas offers more, "ok. I think that if we had the element of surprise we would be better off. I don't like just sitting and waiting for them to come get us. How big is the crate? Could some of us hide inside it so they will be concealed from site? I think that if we carred the door with chains and put up a baricade of some sort it would limit their entrance somewhat. That will buy our archers time to get them. IF they come in through the windows, they'll only be able to come through one at a time, so our archers will have free shots at them as they use those methods. IF we allow them to all get in at once we'll be over run no matter how well we fight. That is my final suggestion because it is nearing time to prepare and to rest. We won't have time to do much if we continue to talk. Whatever the group decides is best, that's what I agree to." Thomas stops setting up the decoys and begins to rub Pryte-Honos' neck.
Lok Mufflefoot Tuesday April 3rd, 2001 1:45:43 PM
Coming back a little dejected looking the halfling says quietly "They were nowhere to be found." Perking up a bit he says "but I'm confident they are very bad, they've terrorized all the shopkeepers." Pushing crates and any heavy objects he can find to block the warehouse entrance the halfling hopes it will be enough to slow the orcs down. Then using the long table of armor he pushes crates between it and the wall setting himself up behind them. Piling what shields he can find up around his nest the halfling retrieves his bow and traims his steady aim on the door using his nest to hide him as best he can.
Uteva Tuesday April 3rd, 2001 4:38:40 PM
Teva waits to see if anyone else will take healing potions, then gathers the remainders into a pouch at her belt. She presses the Cure Moderate Wounds potion into Trace's palm, closing his fingers around it. "Please," she tells him, "be careful."
She takes stock of the lighting situation. "We have seven lanterns, and sufficient oil to burn them all night. Altemia has the three sunrods, and I have two torches. I want to hang two lanterns from the rafters a third and two thirds of the way down the length of the warehouse, by about 20' of rope. That should give the elves a decent view of the windows. Ael, if you'll take the rear one, I will take my bow and wait in the rafters above the forward lantern, refilling its oil as needed. I only have 20' of rope; who has more for the other hanging lantern and for safety lines for me and Ael? Actually, I would be in serious trouble if I fell. I'd rather put someone with flying ability up there.
"We can put another lantern on the roof of the back apartment. With Trace's, that should light up the rear pretty well. Two at the front -- on the tables and on the crate mountain -- to make sure the door area is well lit. Trace, if you will substitute one of my torches as your back-up light, we can use the seventh lantern on top of the big central crate."
Putting action to words, Teva retrieves two torches from her pack, hands one to Trace, and begins setting out the low-level lanterns. "Since the sunrods light easily and without flame, Ael, Altemia and I will each keep one with us. From the rafters and the height of the crates, we can easily light them and toss them wherever they are needed. That leaves one more torch for back up, unless someone has more.
"Let's do as Ilsidur suggested, and add one of the wagons to the stuff Lok has got blocking the warehouse door. Sir Thomas, please be sure to lock that door tonight. I'd like help buiding a crenelation of small crates around the top of the big central crate. Sir Thomas, we can put some of your decoy armour dolls up there. If someone who can fly will take my rafter post, then I'll be on the roof of the central crate. I suggest we keep some water near each person, and stockpile more in strategic places. Aly, we'll want to use your pots for that, after supper."
The bard works energetically to carry out her plans, and searches the shelving and the back apartment for rope, vessels to hold water, and anything else that might be useful. Then she crawls into a cot for a well-deserved nap before dinner.
Ilsidur Tuesday April 3rd, 2001 6:49:28 PM
Ilsidur finishes putting his crate in place, and says, "I want to be close to the ground, this flying stuff makes me stomach-sick just thinking about it." Then he moves over to Uteva and hands her a vial and 50' of rope. "Here you go, the potion is a potion of flying, and the rope should help you get down if you don't need to move in a hurry. You all aren't worried about being balanced up there in the rafters? I know I would be worried about trying to cock my crossbow while sitting on those beams. But then, I always was a ground-dweller."
Once Ilsidur has listened to everyone else's plans, he helps Lok set up his 'nest' and helps Uteva move the crates around. Then he drags his weary butt off to lie down for the rest of the afternoon. [OOC: Ilsidur won't post again until he wakes up for the evening.]
