. . . And Scheming and Plotting (DM Lee-Anne) Wednesday May 23rd, 2001 5:59:53 PM
The Wold turns, the stars come out, and Our Heroes continue to talk.
Sir Thomas Wednesday May 23rd, 2001 8:55:41 PM
Thomas smiles at the group, "well done friends. I think Trace's plan sounds solid and well thought out. I will go through the front door first with the tower shield then. I think that will provide ample cover of the door from archers for the others to have time to enter. I think we should get going. If Lok is already inside the lair, then he could be in trouble or discovered at any minute. I'll help carry the chest over, but if I'm kicking in the door someone else will have to carry it in." Thomas then goes to gather the potions of healing that he placed on the table that no one took. He offers them a second time to anyone, "does anyone feel they need more of this?" If no one accepts he puts them into his belt pouch. He leaves the lanterns and oil sitting on the table since Trace has magical torches. Thomas takes time to remove the bit and saddle from Pryte-Honos so that if he has to fight the captured orcs he will not be hinderd. Thomas also takes a little extra time to move anything that might be used as a weapon as far away from the apartment door as he can. He also places them out of plain sight. One last check of the orc's bonds and he is satisfied to leave. He straps on his helmet and picks up the tower shield. He makes no other comments as he goes to stand next to the chest.
Pryte-Honos takes up position by the apartment door to be able to attack swiftly if the orcs try to escape.
Altemia (by Clay) Wednesday May 23rd, 2001 9:25:21 PM
"Ok Teva, I'll trade places with you. It suits me better to be able to roam the room freely or cast spells from behind a pilar or something anyway. Plus if I go in through the back way I can come in with Tara and Kevil. I feel more comfortable with them near me anyway. Thomas, before you go kicking in any doors, be sure to give the rest of us time to get set and make our final preparations. Remember, I want to cast the barkskin scroll on myself." Altemia also makes her final preparations as far as grabbing only what she thinks she'll need. She checks and double checks and hides her backpack and anything else she is not taking. Altemia waits to leave by the door.
Ilsidur Wednesday May 23rd, 2001 9:29:33 PM
"Trace, you have come up with a good plan. My only suggestion for a change is rather than have anyone come in through the back, which is a room that is blocked off by a wall and a door from the main room, we have the other two groups come in from the two sides, into the two change rooms. That way, we can all shout and hear each other. I am worried if there is a significant force in the back room, you guys coming in from the rear might be in serious trouble, and the rest of us wouldn't even know it. What do you think?"
"Also, I have memorized a number of spells to help us out. I have an Obscuring Cloud spell, which I will cast at the front door, to mask our entrance the way the orcs used it on us in the warehouse. I will cast Resist Elements for electricity on myself, that lasts for 4 minutes. It will help to absorb some of the damage from Void's lightning bolts. I will try to get Void to attack me with those. I will cast Bull's Strength on Sir Thomas, which will give him more strength [OOC: 1d4+1 STR points; I'll roll when I cast it.]. It will last for 4 hours. I will cast Magic Weapon on my waraxe, lasting 4 minutes. I will cast Aid on Trace, giving him 1d8 more hp, and a +1 to hit, lasting 4 minutes. And last of all, I will cast Bless on our group at the front door, which will give all of us +1 to hit for 4 minutes."
"OK?"
Trace and Radiant Wednesday May 23rd, 2001 10:25:53 PM
Ok then, the group that was to come in from the rear will move to the right side of the building and enter that way so we can still verably talk to each other. Also dont forget Ale and Aly, we need your strong magic focused on Bear and Void after blessing us. Ok then lets go and I hope Lok is still safe, and some one should activly look for him tied up or something after we gain a foot hold in the room. And as I said before, If this goes bad, we group together and back out the front door to safety." Trace passes out some of the healing potions and magic torches to the others as they make their way to the challange.
Alyndar Wednesday May 23rd, 2001 11:11:29 PM
Aly shows up, battle gear on.
Would you folks allow me to wear the new pair of bracers we found after the last fight? the ones with the ornate workmanship on them? If no objections Aly puts them on. (will need a message sent to me when I find out what they are)
As for my complement of spells, here is my readied list: Zero Level DazeX2, FlareX2 1st Level Magic MissileX3 Shield 2nd Level Invisibility Melf's Acid ArrowX2
Ill cast Shield just before we go in, then cast Invisibility on myself. Will slide into a position of advantage then let loose my magics. I will Target the Caster and think we all should do the same.
When that is done, Aly then goes and snatches the LAST sweet cake out of Sly's hand and pops it into his mouth, eating it he smiles at Sly then proceeds to do the dishes, Keeping the cookie jar within easy reach.
Sly Foxx and Luke Thursday May 24th, 2001 11:36:12 AM
Sly is reading from his Spell Book, Then takes a bit out of the sweet cake(he thinks he has in his hand), but come up with nothing but air. "Alyndar I don't like it, Theres only two entrance that I can see, one in the frount and one in the back. Hey! Big Brother! where do you see the side doors? And as for you. Little Sister! I want you and our pets right behind me." Then takes another bit out of the Sweet Cake that is not there. "Hmmm! these Sweet Cakes are even lighter than the last batch! Hmmm! Good!".
Uteva Thursday May 24th, 2001 5:07:29 PM
"There are windows in the side walls, Sly. We're going to break in." Teva waggles her eyebrows significantly. She accepts a continual flame torch from Trace, shoving it into her quiver, but refuses any healing potions. "I have a few with me," she explains patting a pouch at her waist.
"It's fine with me if Alyndar wears a pair of the bracers. Ael, do you want to try the others? We may not know what they do, but we took them off of those two spellcasters who came in the windows last night. Ilsidur, will you take the magical breastplate? It would offer about the same protection as your splint, and be lighter and easier to move around in."
As soon as everyone has their gear together, the bard takes a corner of the chest, and waits for others to help carry it. "One, two, three, heave! Let's stop just out of range of the Swan so that we can cast last-minute spells and coordinate our entry."
A Nighttime Stroll in Magic City (DM Lee-Anne) Thursday May 24th, 2001 6:38:45 PM
With the warehouse and shop locked behind them, the party makes its way to the Silky Swan, toting the heavy chest between them (200lb). Sieur Lukor gives them a cheerful nod as they pass, and the petite owner of The Fruit Market wishes them Wardd's blessings.
They arrive within sight of their destination. Diffuse light streams through the screening of the visible windows.
Alyndar Thursday May 24th, 2001 6:44:58 PM
shakes his head at Sly while he tries eating air, thinking it good.
Aly will take 4 healing potions, i'll be roaming healer when needed. Aly will also take a masterwork light crossbow and 20 masterwork bolts from Chloe's stash of weapons. (giving me a +8ranged with lt. crossbow)
Here's what I plan to do just so you know: I will cast Invisibility on myself just before we enter the building. Once inside I will find the most advantageous spot and go there, Putting a loaded crossbow within reach I will then start letting my magic fly, leading off with my Melf's Acid Arrows then Magic Missiles and then ending up flaring and dazing the casters if they are still standing. In addition, whoever is attacking Void first, I am your support. I feel we all need to target him then move to Bear when void falls or runs away like last time.
Sir Thomas Thursday May 24th, 2001 8:54:37 PM
Thomas helps to carry the chest over, and helps set it down when they reach the boundaries of the challenge area. He looks around for memory cards on the outside of the building hoping to spot one, which will ease his nerves about the orcs firing arrows at them before they actually enter the area. "Ok friends, let's get ready to go in. Who will be responsible for carrying the chest? I'll help rush it up to the door, but if I'm kicking the door in I won't want to be off balance with the chest. I'll be sure to make a hoop-la and a hollar noise when I kick the door so that those entering in other places will know I'm making my move. I'll do my best to keep the door clear of traffic so that those coming in next can enter relatively freely and unthreatened." As Altemia and Trace and Sly and the others not going in the front door leave to take position, Thomas casts Bless Weapon on his sword. [OOC:Thomas is only casting that if the duration is long enough for it to be worth it. I can't find it.]
Altemia, Tara, and Kevil d20=3 d20=20 Thursday May 24th, 2001 9:05:55 PM
Altemia helps with the chest as much as she can. When they arrive at the Swan she double checks to be sure she has all that she will need. Then she takes a knee and loves her animal companions. "We will be fine you guys. Let's go in there and take care of business. You guys are going in the front with Sir Thomas and Ilsidur, Ael and Alyndar. Do your best to protect them and each other. Remember, there's safety in numbers for us. Just do your best my friends." Altemia prepares her spell components and heads for the side of the Swan trying to find a window that looks relatively easy to get in that is also within hearing distance of the front door so that she'll hear Thomas' yelling. She tries to decide if it is safe to put her ear to the glass of the window she picks to try to decide if it is an empty room, and if she thinks it is she will do that. Altemia tries to keep to the shadows as best she can while also moving as quietly as her abilities will allow as she approaches the window. [rolled 3 +1 for hide = 4 and 20 + 5 = 25 for move silently]
Trace and Radiant Thursday May 24th, 2001 10:46:41 PM
Trace moves over to the window with his group and readies himself for action. He drinks down his potion of flying. While waiting for the signal to enter he cast magic fang on to Radiant, "Demass!" Holding a petrafied holly leaf in one hand and touching Radiant with his other hand. The leaf soon begins to glow a gold color and move quickly for the leaf to Radiant traveling hand to hand, then Trace draws his Long and short sword awaiting battle.
Ael d'Gaiaim Friday May 25th, 2001 8:53:31 AM
Ael will take the bracers, and MW crossbow and 10 MW bolts, if available. He also takes 2 healing potions.
"I will cast Shield, See Invisible, and Invisiblity on myself before the combat begins, and then sneak in with the same intent as Alyndar. IF there is a large gathering of Orcs in a single location, I will attempt to incapacitate them with an invocation of Webs."
(OOC: I assume that Shield, SeeInvis and Invis will all be in effect when combat begins, since he is casting these as preparation.)
"If I can detect anyone who is invisible in the area, I will shout out the information. That act should not comprimise my own concealment, but we should be prepared for similar divinations from our malefactors."
Grabbing a cookie, he munches on it thoughtfully while checking his spells and equipment.
Sly Foxx and Luke Friday May 25th, 2001 11:07:07 AM
Sly closes his spell book, "I think I'm prepared now, I will have going in to battle Ray of Frost x4 - Magic Missiles x3 - Flaming Sphere x2. If I cannot get them wit the cold, then I'll get them with Fire and if that does not work, my old stand br Magic missels." Sly Looks down at Luke, "Are we ready? Let's go them, Ok come on, Little Sister." Sly pick up the remaing 2 Cure Light wounds and puts them in his back pouch. "Armer On" them Sly is ready to go and follows every body to the Drunkin Swan.
Uteva (Prot. from Evil) d100=9 d100=13 d20+4=15 d20+6=13 Friday May 25th, 2001 5:57:35 PM
Before the groups split up, Uteva tries to cast her Message spell (Arcane Spell Failure 9%), but she catches one of the buckles on her wrist against her leather breastplate, spoiling the spell. "Salia's Song!" she curses. "I hate it when that happens." She tries again, this time successfully targetting Altemia, Alyndar, Ilsidur, and Trace. Whispering, she explains, "You four will be able to hear my whispered messages, and to reply to me the same way. Just in case shouting doesn't work."
"Altemia, Sly, look for a window about halfway down the North side. That should take you into the change room. Good luck, everybody."
The bard follows Trace along the South alley to a window midway down. She peers through the screen and listens carefully, and examines it to see how it opens. (Spot 15, Listen 13)
If all is clear, she whispers, "Is everyone in position? Get ready, and cast them if you've got them." Teva uses two scroll to cast Protection from Evil on herself and on Trace. "We'll go in on three. One . . . Two . . ."
Ilsidur (electricity resisted, blessed, magic weapon) d8=7 d4+1=3 Friday May 25th, 2001 6:36:51 PM
Before Trace heads around to the side, Ilsidur casts Aid on the ranger. [OOC: Trace is +1 to hit, +1 on saves vs fear and has a bonus 7 hit points for the next 4 minutes. If he is hit, he loses those hp first.]
He then casts Resist Elements (electricity) on himself, and Magic Weapon on his waraxe. He casts Bless on the party at the front door (everyone is +1 to hit for the next 4 minutes). Lastly, he casts Bull's Strength on Sir Thomas. [OOC: Sir Thomas has 3 more STR points for the next 4 hours, along with all the bonuses that come with the increased STR].
He waits for Sir Thomas to break down the front door, to cast his Obscuring Cloud just inside the open doorway.
"If the door won't break down, we might have to break in through one of the windows on either side of the door."
Alyndar Friday May 25th, 2001 6:52:02 PM
When we get into position and Sir Thomas tells everyone to prepare, Aly casts Shield on himself and then Invisibility. He positions himself to the rear of the front door assaulting group. (Aly's ac excluding invis is now a 21)
Aly has cure potions within quick reach, backpack is in the locked home of Madame Chloe, and battle pouch is in position. Lt. Crossbow is slung across the back, bolt quiver attached to right hip and Don't forget, im wearing the brown leather bracers with ornate designs on them.
Trace (Flying) ; (+7 hp's for 4 minutes{aid}, +1 to hit{aid}, +1 to save vs fear{aid}, +1 to hit {bless}) ; Raidant (+1 to attack and damage) Friday May 25th, 2001 11:39:15 PM
Feeling empowered with Radiant on his shoulder and Teva beside him ready to enter. If they cannot figure out a way to enter by opening it they will bust in when they hear the other team enter their entrance. Every muscle twitches in Trace's body in anticipation of the battle ahead. "May Mittri be mercyfull on my soul." Trace moves into action.......
On Your Mark (DM Lee-Anne) Saturday May 26th, 2001 12:41:10 AM
Altemia and Uteva hear nothing at their windows. The tight weave of the lacquer screening interferes with vision -- they can see that the rooms beyond are well lit, with vague, low shapes of what might be benches in the middle of the room. The screens themselves are built into the window frames, and will have to be smashed in.
The solid, double front doors are the type that open outward; they are framed by similiarly lit lacquer-screen windows. The treasure chest sits where Sir Thomas left it, before the doors, as everyone waits for the signal to go.
((Strength check DC 13 to break through window screens, full round to break and get through. Door -- mystery DC))
Sly Foxx and Luke Sunday May 27th, 2001 1:48:29 PM
After the girls break in the window, Sly will help the girls get up and through the window. " Girls your putting on a little weight, next time you better give me the extra desert!" said sly smiling. After the girls get into the room, Sly will pick up and push the two wolves and Luke into the room. Then giving a good look around, Sly will pull himself up and into the room joining the girls. Giving the room a good once over.
Altemia, Tara, and Kevil Sunday May 27th, 2001 6:29:46 PM
Before moving to the side of the house, Altemia pulls the Barkskin scroll out and casts the spell on herself (+3 natural armor bonus for 10/level, raises AC to 16). After casting the spell, she moves toward the side of the house with Sly and Luke, motioning the wolves to follow. Standing by the side of the building, she quickly attempts to cast Magic Fang on Kevil. (OOC: If she realizes there is not enough time, she will try to do it inside later)
Uteva d20=4 Monday May 28th, 2001 11:47:56 AM
As soon as all the groups indicate they are ready, Teva whispers, ". . . Three!" She starts hollering at the top of her lungs, kicking at the window screen. Unfortunately, she doesn't contribute much to Trace's efforts to break through (Str check 4). As soon as the ranger is inside, Teva follows him, bow in hand.
. . . Go! (DM Lee-Anne) Monday May 28th, 2001 11:56:58 AM
Everybody is spelled up and loaded for Bear when Teva gives the word.
((I need Strength checks from characters trying to break in. DC is 13 for the window screens, and it takes a full round to break them and climb in. Higher DC for the front doors.))
Sir Thomas d20=2 Monday May 28th, 2001 12:05:21 PM
With sword drawn and ready for battle Thomas stands at the front door waiting for every one to get into position. He draws back and kicks the door with all that he has, but his foot hits a slick spot and slides off with a glancing blow. (rolled STR check 2) Thomas curses under his breath at the bad luck and then rears back to kick again. He starts yelling with battle cries and other noise to draw attention to the group at the front door and away from anything else that his friends may be doing. Also, he hopes that they hear him so that the attack will be coordinated free from unnecessary surprises. [OOC: I'm away from my character sheet until tommorrow.]
Altemia, Tara, and Kevil (+1/+1) d20+2=15 Monday May 28th, 2001 3:02:10 PM
At Teva's three, Altemia begins to hammer at the window in an attempt to knock it in so that her party can enter (Str 15). Her success at it actually surprises her a bit, but not for long.
Ilsidur d20+3=18 Monday May 28th, 2001 3:33:05 PM
Realizing that Sir Thomas may have some trouble breaking in the front door, Ilsidur moves to the window immediately left of the door, and smashes the screen with his waraxe. He pokes his head up to look through the window, ready to duck if anything comes flying at him. If the window opens into the main foyer with the front doors, he casts his Obscuring Cloud spell centered right inside the front doors. If the window opens into the men's bath, and there is no-one obvious, he climbs through the window and into the room.
Sly Foxx and Luke d20+3=16 Monday May 28th, 2001 8:01:16 PM
Sly tries to keep to the plan. After helping Altemia with the window and let's her in first. Then the wolves and Luke. Sly lifts himself in through the window slips into the room, trying to be silent as possible. "Now, protect my back so that I can give you time for your magic, do you under stand Little Sister?" The Sly listen and looks around the room.
Alyndar (shield and invisibility) Monday May 28th, 2001 8:46:03 PM
cringes at Sir Thomas' failuer to kick the door in and waits. Aly will move into the street where he can watch the upstairs windows for sign of orcs.
Ael d'Gaiaim (Shielded, SeeInvis, Invis, Bless[+1 ToHit]) Monday May 28th, 2001 9:54:14 PM
Ael flexes his fingers and waits alongside Sir Thomas. Frowning slightly, he double-checks his preparations -- crossbow and bolts at his belt, healing potions in a pocket of his vest, and spell components at the ready and easily accessable. His backpack is of course back at Chloe's.
He is also wearing the other pair of bracers which were found on the Orcs; namely the metal ones. Before the combat he expressed thankfulness, but also profound dislike for using items with, as he said "unknown and possibly malicious dweodem." Fortunately, the group managed to tune out or avert a lecture on clever magical traps of the past.
Trace (Flying) ; (+7 hp's for 4 minutes{aid}, +1 to hit{aid}, +1 to save vs fear{aid}, Raidant (+1 to attack and damage) d20+1=9 d20+3=18 Tuesday May 29th, 2001 12:16:44 AM
Trace and Radiant fly in through the window armed to the teeth and loaded for bear (no pun intended.) With every muscle twitching and all his focus on scanning the room high and low for archers and magic users Trace looks for his first victem of rage. (Rolled a dc of 9 to intimidate) Trace sceams aloud in a booming voice. "Beware of the Southern Lights, their vengance is swift and just while unforgiveing. Run now and live, stay and meet your maker. You have been warned."

Interlude - What Lok Did All Afternoon d20+1=9 d20+1=8 d20+1=5 d20+1=15 4d4(4+3+2+1)+1=11 Tuesday May 29th, 2001 12:23:55 AM
As soon as he walks into the lobby of the Silky Swan, Lok Spots the orc standing on the west end of the balcony, and maneuvers to keep larger people between himself and the orc's line of sight. From where the orc is standing, he can see the doors to all the guest rooms, as well as most of the pool area and lobby. (Rolled for you Spot=18, used your Hide=24). A friendly towelboy quickly approaches the halfling and inquires how he might be of service. Not incidentally, he provides handy cover during the conversation.
Lok happily walks in trying to keep people between himself and the orc. Full well knowing that he will have to move quickly and quietly, the halfling moves to the laundry quietly slipping between people and using them as shields.
Lok easily makes his way through the men's baths, blending in with the other customers. Soon he follows a tray-laden towelboy through a door at the end of the corridor, marked Employees Only. He emerges into a kitchen chaotic with servers, cooks, dishwashers, shouting, banging, and yummy food smells.
(Spot=6,11,14) A snaggle-toothed man, turning from the sink beside the dumb-waiter to drop a damp towel into a basket of the same, spots the halfling coming through the door. "Here, now, who're you?"
Thinking quickly (burned your Move Silent for a Bluff of 22), Lok replies with a tall tale about being a new hire. The dishwasher immediately hands him the basket and sends him to the laundry.
His careful steps take him to a large laundry room. Suddenly, the idea of hiding somewhere in the room comes to the halfling. There were bound to be tons of laundry that a halfling could hide himself in, or washing tubs in which Lok could hide until such time as he could safely scout or assist with the challenge.
Carefully picking his way into the laundry room he tries to slip into a corner within that laundry room, which was unlikely to be searched.
This room is bigger than the kitchens, and twice as chaotic. Using the excuse of his errand, the halfling finds (Search 25) a central hiding spot, and conceals himself (Hide 31) in the tent-shaped, shadowed area between two huge laundry vats. Between obstructing legs of people and tables, he has a view of three of the entrances to the room, and behind him, a short escape route to a screened window through rows of towels hung to dry. He can't see the SW corner of the room, near the back door.
Altemia and Ilsidur are shown briefly through the area at separate times. Two laundresses working within a few feet of Lok gossip through most of the afternoon. After Ilsidur passes through, one says, "Well, wasn't he a likely-looking one? All focussed and competent-looking."
"What is it with you and dwarves?" The other snickers. "Honestly! I hear tell this group has already beaten them orcs once."
"Good! We'll see those orcs get their come-uppance."
"Lem willing, they will. Nasty bunch. I hear Sieur Raffail hopes the balcony gets damaged in the fighting."
"Ooh! Wants to remodel, does he? With his Challenge insurance to foot the bill? Tightwad!"
Their conversation wends on, until two clerks enter the laundry. They move about, setting memory stones here and there. One stands directly in front of Lok to place a stone on the tub rim over his head, (Spot=17) but doesn't notice his hidden audience.
Shortly thereafter, a well-dressed woman comes through the archway from the kitchen, loudly announcing, ". . . dy out! Everybody out! The customers are gone; the sun sets; the Challenge is upon us! Everybody out! Every . . ." She disappears through the door to the women's baths. The racket in this room and in the kitchen subsides to silence as the staff follows her out. The laundry and kitchen are still well-lit, by suspended globes that give a steady glow.
From his hiding spot the halfling brings out his weapon black and covers Twiddle with it. After waiting an appropriate interval, Lok is just about to scout about when he hears (Listen=21) steps descending the back stairs. Then a sepulchral voice rises in the cadences of spellcasting.
Bringing out Twiddle, and then the potion of gaseous form from his beltpouch, the halfling shivers just slightly. Looking out, Lok keeps his sneaky ways as he moves quite silently (move silently 29) and sticking well in the shadows (31) moving to the south to the kitchen. Here the halfling will look for anything or anyone stationed about, or anything out of the ordinary.
Although there are few shadows to work with in the well-lit buiding, Lok manages to cross safely to the wide archway between the laundry and kitchen. There are steep, narrow stairs here leading down, which are protected from people tumbling in by a 3' tall swinging gate. He stops by the 2'x2' cubby of the dumb-waiter, peeks around the corner into the kitchen, (Listen 9, burned your Search for a Spot of 12) and comes nose to belt-buckle with a tall, black-robed orc.
At least, he thinks it's an orc. Lok's brain tries to deny what his eyes fail to see in that first, quick glimpse upward, for the eerie figure stepping directly toward him has no head, just the stump of a neck. (Frightful Appearance. To attack or look at him closely, make a Will save vs. DC 18 (Lok's racial bonus versus fear applies) or be Shaken (-2 morale penalties to attack, weapon damage, and saves) for a number of rounds. With successful save, immune for a day.)
(Spot=17,Init=15,Init=13) Lok has him flatfooted, so he get a surprise round partial action, and initiative in the first full round. Void will bump into him if he doesn't move, -6 penalty to Hide if he does move (goes up to -11 if you move more that half your speed)
Shaken by the horrifying Faceless one (Will=12) the halfling pulls his courage together and makes a snap decision. Nimbly switching his potion into his pocket in favor of his silver ball, the halfling stabs with vicious ferocity at the horrid orc's gut (to hit 14, damage 4+1 + 2d6 =12).
The headless orc walks right into the gut blow, and Twiddle becomes coated with blood. He shouts something in his own tongue, which the dagger helpfully translates as, "Excrement! You bums get in here, now!" Hearing that sepulchral voice issue from the stump of a neck gives Lok the wiggins.
Backpeddling 5' into the kitchen, Void presses one hand to his belly and pulls a slender wand from his belt with the other. He speaks a word of power, and suddenly a thick mass of sticky strands clogs the wide archway, filling the dumb-waiter and basement entrance, and expanding out about 5' into the laundry and kitchen areas.
Lok becomes Entangled in the webbing. (-2 to Attack and -4 to effective Dexterity, full round and Escape Artist check to move 5' per full 5 points the check score exceeds 10)
(Make a Reflex Save vs. DC 16 or also be stuck in the webbing. If stuck, all you can do is talk, and try to break loose by rolling Escape Artist check vs. DC 25. Then you would still be Entangled, but no longer Stuck.)
Luckily, Lok avoids sticking to the strands (Reflex=25). Completely encompassed by the sticky mess, the halfling thinks how handy his potion meant for escape would become at that moment. Particles of air, after all, could not be trapped easily.
The halfling quickly grabs the potion from his pocket using his forefinger and thumb around his dagger. Drinking deeply of the vial the halfling suddenly feels very light and spread out as if his body were not completely whole anymore. As soon as this transformation occurs the halfling begins floating towards the Faceless One. (5' step)
The dark cloaked orc Steps back again, (now 3 squares S of dumbwaiter) bumping up against one of the long central kitchen tables. He tucks his wand away and spreads his hands in a sweeping, welcoming gesture. He begins a hypnotic chant that drifts into recognizable Common. "Come now, my small friend. Surely there is no need for violence between us." The hollow voice is strangely beguiling, comforting in a creepy way. (Will Save vs. DC 15 or be Charmed, believing Void is your very best buddy.)
The door into the kitchen from the southwest corner of the pool area opens.
The halfling stops suddenly and is drawn in by the disgusting thing somehow (Will=8). Something in it's lack of a head really is charming to the halfling who was utterly terrified of it just a moment ago. Smiling happily the gassy halfling wanders helplessly towards the thing ready for it to slit his throat.
(4 Hero Points for rerolls: Will=9,8,5,15) With a desperate act of will, Lok manages to resist Void's eerily seductive friendliness. Deciding to tangle no further with the dangerous orc, he drifts toward one of the windows at the rear of the kitchen (speed 10').
Before the gaseous form can escape, Void directs four bolts of billious green energy at it (Magic Missile 11 hp total damage). Two more orcs enter through the open door, and he instructs them to follow the halfling's transluscent form. As Lok diffuses easily through the screen, one orc exits through the back door while the other waits inside. The two doggedly trail him as long as he remains within the Challenge area, one inside and one out, calling directions back and forth to one another through the window screens.
While the potion's effects last, the halfling observes what he can of the orcs' preparations. At the west end of the buiding, they use all of the moveable kitchen, office, and laundry room furniture to blockade the kitchen and laundry doors to the side corridors and pool area. Through windows along the north and south sides, he visits inn rooms done in marble and velvet upstairs, and various bathing rooms downstairs. No special preparations, and no orcs other than his follower, are in evidence in any of these rooms.
From the east end of the building, Lok gets only a quick peek inside because Void stands in the lobby with his magic-launching hand aimed directly at the halfling, and with Bear and Brod to either side of him, grinning. With his gaseous form about to become all too solid, Lok sensibly retreats from the Challenge area to await his companions.
Lok sees a total of 7 different orcs during this recon.
Uteva (Prot. from Evil) Tuesday May 29th, 2001 12:49:25 PM
Teva grins recklessly as she follows the ranger in. "You tell them, Trace!" she shouts. "These craven orcs are sure to flee from us again!"
To Altemia, Alyndar, Ilsidur, and Trace, she whispers, "We're in. How are your groups doing?"
Lok Mufflefoot d6=4 Tuesday May 29th, 2001 12:52:19 PM
Having been hiding near the challenge area the halfling gulped down the potion he had been given earlier by Uteva (cure light wounds i believe, rolled 1d6 for 4 hps, may be mistaken on hp ammount back). His singed chest really hurt and his strength had been sapped by his battle. But his work was far from over. Moments later he noticed shadows near the windows of the Silky Swan. It was right then the halfling noticed nearby Sir Thomas kicking at the blockaded door only feet away from him. Slapping the knight on the back the halfling said urgently.
"Thomas, Ael! Void, Brod, and Bear are in the back gathered in the kitchen. This door is blockaded and the whole front area is and corridors too inside, we must join the others or they will be outnumbered if we do not gather. There are seven of them around hurry hurry, we have to go in at one spot or we will be cut off from one another!"
The halfling runs towards Uteva to warn her and hopes that his friends spread the word so that they would not be picked off one by one. It had been a terribly bloody night already.
Subtle, We're Not (DM Lee-Anne) d20+4=8 d20+11=31 Tuesday May 29th, 2001 1:27:14 PM
Altemia, Sly and the canines, on the north side, and Trace and Uteva, on the south side, drop down into their respective changing rooms. The 25' rooms are centered by a circular stone bench and lined with open cubbies and hanging plants, but otherwise, empty. There is one archway and one door in each of the east and west walls. Straight ahead, a 15' lacquer screen obscures the archway out to the pool area.
At the east end of the building, Ilsidur's busted window, barely 2' south of the doors, opens into the lobby. His one quick glimpse of the well-lit interior matches what he saw when he scouted earlier, minus the crowds of patrons and staff. (Spot 8) The fog cloud fills the east end of the lobby and billows out the windows into the street, obscuring the people and chest in front of the doors.
Alyndar(Invisible, Shield, Bless) Tuesday May 29th, 2001 6:36:05 PM
Aly stands his ground, waiting to react once Sir Thomas gets the door open.
Ilsidur Tuesday May 29th, 2001 8:39:44 PM
Ilsidur whispers back to Uteva, "Pass the message, the orcs are holed up in the kitchen/laundry room at the back of the Inn, to the far west. They have blockaded the door. We all need to meet at the west end of the pool, to attack into the kitchen area. Lok has said there are seven orcs in total. There is also a flight of stairs in the kitchen; if we get in to attack, we need to make sure none of them escape into the basement and out someway down there."
"Sir Thomas, don't waste any more time on that door, lets all climb in through this window. We are shielded by the fog cloud here."
Then, Ilsidur climbs in through the window, and moves 5' into the room, waiting for the others to climb in. He tells the group, "Grab the belt of the person in front of you, and I will lead us to the poolside. Once everyone is in, he moves carefully through the fog, keeping his eyes and ears open, heading for the west edge of the pool. [OOC: Lee, can you roll a direction sense roll for Ilsidur, if necessary, to move through the fog cloud? I am sending this from an internet cafe in Sault Ste. Marie, and I don't have my character sheet here.]
Sir Thomas (+1 AT and +1 save vs fear - blessed; +4 STR bull strength) d20=12 Tuesday May 29th, 2001 9:02:42 PM
Thomas is not happy at all with his first strike of the door. He curses a few explicatives in an only slightly muffled yell. Thomas takes two steps back to give him a bit of momentum for this next kick. On his way into the door, as his foot rises from the ground he asks Alemi to help him. "Guide my foot my lord!" (rolled 12 +4 STR mod + ? Bull STR = ?) [OOC: what is the strength modification for a strength of 22? STR raised from 18 to 22 with +4 of bull's strength.]
Thomas lands a solid blow to the door this time. He feels the recoil reverberate up his leg. Whether the door opens or not, Thomas sheathes his sword. If the door opens he grabs the chest and drags it in behind him holding his shield up in front of himself. if not he prepares for a third kick to the door. As he awaits the door's swinging in Thomas acknowledges Lok's flurried words with a few statements that call for further clarification of his point. "What are you saying Lok? I don't understand. We are meeting in the main dinning room by the fountain. If I can just get this door open we will be fine I think." Thomas feels the urgent need to get inside. He knows he was supposed to have been in side by now. This is not good.

The bard carefully peeks around the edge of the blocking screen, checking down the corridor to the kitchen (Spot 13) and out into the pool area (Spot 7).
She will continue to relay whispered messages as soon as she gets them.
Lok Mufflefoot Wednesday May 30th, 2001 1:19:31 PM

As he raises a hand from his stomach to wipe the blood charred holes in his belly are revealed.
For a moment his eyes glass over but before anybody can say anything he is already around the corner and trying to get through Uteva's window. He hops through it with some difficulty.
When in Doubt, Run About (DM Lee-Anne) Wednesday May 30th, 2001 2:05:56 PM
East Group: Sir Thomas manages to knock the front door off its hinges; when it hits the floor, the hollow thwap echoes weirdly through the building - to characters in the change rooms, it sounds as if it came from very nearby in the pool area. Ilsidur waits for his invisible companions. Only Alyndar knows where Alyndar is. Characters in this group who succeed at an extra Listen check vs DC 8 will have heard someone running off northward.
North Group: Characters in the north change room who succeed at an extra Listen check vs DC 8 hear running steps approaching down the alley from the East. The canines nose about the room. Luke and Tara pause near the dividing screen to the pool area, hackles raised and snarling, apparently smelling something they don't like.
South Group: Trace widens a hole in the screen. Teva sees an empty hallway and pool area. Lok is almost to the window.
Everything whispered to Uteva will be heard immediately after by Alyndar, Trace, Ilsidur, and Altemia, as the bard relays messages.
Remember to make appropriate skill checks if you attempt something. (Spot, Listen, Move Silently, etc.) Characters within the Obscuring Mist, please make a Listen check each round.

Sir Thomas [blessed +1 to attack; Bull STR (21)] d20=3 Thursday May 31st, 2001 12:21:04 AM
"Thank you my lord." Thomas gives his lord Alemi some credit for his solid kick given to the front door of the Swan. He sheathes his sword and picks up the chest with a little effort. He jumps only a little when Alyndar touches his shoulder, but disregards it when Alyndar identifies himself. Since Thomas doesn't know much grace he just walks in. "Door's open Ilsidur, welcome to the Silly Swan challenge area. Come on in, we're open for business." Thomas states the joke a little dryly for it to be truely funny, but then gets more serious as he gets deeper intot he fog. "Keep your heads low and your wits about you friends. I'm heading for the pool and a place where I can see. . . I hope." Thomas carries the treasure chest at chest level hoping to provide some cover to himself should he be attacked in the mist. He walks at a fast, but not furious pace through the fog. He hopes to be heading for the pool area and out of the fog. Thomas would rather be somewhere that he can see his challengers, even if it means being outnumbered for a time. He doesn't bother to listen because even if he had a special skill for that the ability would probably be muffled by his helmet. (OOC: I don't think picking up the chest would require a STR check, but just in case I rolled one. ouch. rolled 3 + 5 STR = 8)

With his enhanced strength, Sir Thomas hefts the big chest easily enough. While carrying it, he is Heavily encumbered. Ilsidur leads the paladin and wizard up to the lower landing of the staircase (Intuit Direction = 22). The mist ends at the 3' spool-and-rail stone bannister that encircles the balcony. Faintly through the mist, he can see what looks like all the patio furniture blockading the doors at the other end of the pool. The landing is 6 feet above the level of the pool patio.
From his spyhole in the south change room, Trace's wedge of visibility stretches north and northeast through the archway to the pool. He can see the northern edge of the fog cloud, and a vague, short form just emerging from the mist on the lower stair landing. He also spots another figure crouched behind a pillar on the northeast corner of the balcony.

Sir Thomas [blessed +1 AT; Bull STR (21)] Thursday May 31st, 2001 9:27:58 PM
When Thomas emerges from the cloud he walks just to the left of the pool and sets the chest down on the ground. He stands behind the chest and slams the butt of the tower shield he is carrying into the floor just behind the chest. The sound of the shield hitting the floor is a resounding thud that should be easily heard by anyone in the building. Thomas draws his sword and peaks around the side of the huge shield, then calls out to the orcs. "Bear, my good friend. I am Sir Thomas Hurley of New Elenna! I am a servant of Alemi the guardian of goodness and justice. I believe you promised me a dance back in the courtroom two days ago. I've come to collect on the promise. I even brought you a little insentive if you can put me down." Thomas reaches around the shield and taps the chest with his sword. "I believe you have been looking for this. Do you want it, or should I take it back to the warehouse where it belongs?" Thomas tucks himself safely back behind the huge shield and listens for a response of some kind. While waiting, Thomas looks around the part of the room that he can see from behind the shield. He takes note of the balcony and any inhabitants of it. He also hopes his friends haven't given themselves away to the orcs just yet, because if he can draw them out they will have quite an advantage over their enemies.

Smiling to Uteva the halfling whips out Twiddle and says "Silly dagger, you were too quiet back there. You needed to urge me to finish that Void off."
Then the halflnig pulls the sharp dagger from the many armed orc out of his wrist sheathe. Standing next to Uteva Lok says "Where do we go now? By the way I hurt Void kinda bad" the halfling winks suggestively.

Up on the balcony, Trace's blow drops the surprised archer before the orc realizes he was hit. (In a round where Trace moves his speed, he can only make a single attack.)
As Ilsidur, Sir Thomas and Alyndar jump, drop, and slide their way down from the lower stair landing to the patio, they realize that getting back up will not be so easy. (landing is 6' above ground floor, + 3' bannister: Climb DC 12 to get back up).
Ilsidur doesn't quite make it around to the south archway before Sir Thomas' challenge is answered by Brod's voice screaming, "Kill them all!" in orcish from almost directly overhead. A flurry of missiles fills the air, as orcs on the upper level lean around the pillars to fire at the exposed characters.
From the next-closest pillar to Trace, Bear launches two javelins at Sir Thomas. The paladin's shield isn't quite angled enough, and the first javelin drives into his thigh (7 hp damage). The second falls short, slipping into the pool. "Dance if you can, little man," Bear taunts the paladin. "But first, I crush your weakling elf-scum." Bear turns and becons to Trace with his gauntleted fists.
Uteva's readied shot flies toward Bear, the nearest visible threat to Trace, but clatters harmlessly off the pillar.
Orc #2 fires an arrow at Ilsidur, while #3 shoots at Uteva. Both shots miss.
The dark-cloaked Void aims a slim wand from the west end of the balcony. Suddenly, thick white strands of webbing fill the archway to the Men's Change Room and clog the immediate area of the patio, engulfing Ilsidur, Uteva, and Lok. These three are Entangled in the webbing. (-2 to Attack and -4 to effective Dexterity. It takes a full round and a Strength or Escape Artist check to move 5' per full 5 points the check score exceeds 10.)
(Each must make a Reflex Save vs. DC 16 or also be stuck in the webbing. If stuck, all you can do is talk, and try to break loose by rolling either a Strength check vs. DC 20 or an Escape Artist check vs. DC 25. Then you would still be Entangled, but no longer Stuck.)
Peeking around the edge of the screen, Sly sees 3 orcs partially hidden behind 3 pillars in the southwest area of the balcony. The westmost one (#4) moves his hand and chants something, then directs 2 bolts of glowing energy at Sir Thomas. (Magic Missile, total 7 hp damage).
Four arrows fly toward Trace from the orcs on the south side of the balcony. None of them hit the lucky ranger.
Altemia can see the orcs in the southeast part of the balcony, and sees that the west corridor to the laundry is clear. From behind his pillar, Alyndar has a good look around -- he can see all the orcs on the balcony. (Alyndar, Search check please, DC 15)

Being in a little pain from the javelin protruding from his leg, and a bad position with the orcs surrounding the lower level Thomas knows that the advantage is in their court. He knows that to even things out he and his friends must get up onto the balcony, and they must do it quickly. He lets chance guard the chest knowing that anyone other than maybe Bear will have trouble lifting the chest by themself. He drops the tower shield, which did not provide the cover he thought it might have been able to, pulls the javelin from his leg before he has time to think about what he is doing or the pain involved, and turns to jump up onto the balcony. It is good being tall here because with the aid the jump off his good leg and his enhanced strength he grasps the top of the bannister and pulls himself up easily. (rolled 17 +5 STR = 22 vs DC 12) He then pulls the small shield with the masterwork bashing spikes from his back and mounts it on his arm between him and Brod, the nearest orc. Thomas crouches to one knee after he makes it over the bannister to provide extra protection from the other orcs around the room. This also allows him to get more vital parts behind the protection of the shield. "I hope you have come to terms with your end creature of the dark. Alemi's justice is upon you at the hands of Domi's strong arm." Thomas even cracks a slight smile as his position is very much improved.

When he tries to weave his way through the entangling strands (Escape Artist=+6 ranks +3 Dex [remember, Entanglement confers -4 to effective Dexterity] =23), he does, indeed, manage to move 10', working his way around the wall and toward the staircase. The halfling is still entangled near the middle of the web mass, but is now out on the patio.
Ael climbs through the broken window in the south Changing Room to find himself facing the same webbing. He can't see the pool room, nor any of his companions, though he can hear the fighting. There is one door in the west wall of the room that is free of the webs.
Alyndar's keen elven senses allow him to notice the thin outlines of a door, partly concealed by a pair of tall potted plants. It is cut out of the mottled marble wall under the lowest part of the walkway, leading to a space almost directly under Sir Thomas' feet. As the elf's magical arrow strikes Void, the dark-hooded orc lets out a wordless scream that quickly cuts off. (A character can only take a 5'step if he moves no other distance that round. ie., Aly can't step out, cast, and step back all in one round. However, he can do what the orcs are doing, leaning around the pillar to fire missiles. In a round where he does this, he has 1/2 cover from the pillar. In around where he only peeks out, he has 3/4 cover.)
Uteva remains stuck fast in the webs even as Ilsidur escapes them. . .

Bear chases after the flying ranger, calling, "It is good that you fear me, elf," and pulling out another javelin from the holder at his side. Stops to launch it, (Atk=13) and it plunges past Trace into the pool. "All cursed by the Bell should fear the Brothers of Shadow.
In orcish, Orc #2 shouts, "The dwarf got out!" and fires a shot at Ilsidur that strikes sparks off the dwarf's shield. Orc #3 fires a shot into the pool.
Faced with the ranger, Void reaches up with his free hand and draws the hood back from his head, revealing that he has no head at all. His neck apparently ends in a stump. The appearance of this moving, speaking, headless orc is so freakishly strange that the eyes try to avoid looking in his direction. To attack or look closely at Void, roll a Will Save vs DC 18 (bonuses vs. Fear apply) or be Shaken (-2 morale penalties to attack, weapon damage, and saves). If you save successfully, you don't have to roll again that day.
From behind his pillar, Void directs his wand toward Alyndar and speaks an arcane word, filling the east end of the patio with more webbing. The webs are underneath the overhanging stairs, so Sir Thomas is not caught, but Alyndar is. "Light that one," Void orders. (Alyndar, make a Reflex Save vs. DC 16 or be Stuck in the webbing. Either way, you are also Entangled: -2 to Attack and -4 to effective Dexterity. If Stuck, all you can do is talk, and try to break loose by rolling either a Strength check vs. DC 20 or an Escape Artist check vs. DC 25. Then you would still be Entangled, but no longer Stuck. If Entangled, it takes a full round and a Strength or Escape Artist check to move 5' per full 5 points the check score exceeds 10.)
Orc #4 squints, and manages to target the partially-hidden paladin with two more Magic Missiles, despite the obscurement of mists and balcony. (88% on miss chance, 5 hp damage to Sir Thomas)
Orcs #5 and #6 shoot for Trace, and end up adding to the growing number of missiles in the swimming pool.
Orc #7 produces a flaming arrow and drops into the south edge of Alyndar's web, which instantly catches fire.
Brod takes another shot at Trace, this time putting an arrow in the ranger's are, doing 5 hp damage. He moves toward the stairs. (Sir Thomas, please make a Spot and a Listen check each round you're in the mist.)
Sly Foxx and Luke Monday June 4th, 2001 11:08:22 PM
Sly watches Altemia as she and the wolves go out the window. Never saying a word to him. What to do now? Go up the front stairs or Follow Altemia? *She must have seen something out there, and there must be another way into this building* Sly grabs Luke and goes out the window following the girl. "Come on, Luke, She must know something we don't know." Sly tells Luke.

(rolled 16 for spot +2 WIS = 18 and 15 listen +2 WIS = 17) Thomas is quite surprised by the bolts of light and energy that blast him in his flank. Good thing they are made of light because at least he could see them to expect their impact. The knowledge helps him not to cry out in pain and surprise. Thomas is thoroughly angered that he and his friends appear to be sitting ducks at the moment. He withdraws into the mist even deeper placing his side against the wall to give him more protection from being flanked. Thomas hears Brod coming into the mist and moves to meet him. Thomas comes at the loud orc with his shield trying to drive him from the mist. (rolled 10 for bashing - 4 for off hand AT + 9 melee AT = 15; rolled 1 + 5 = 6 hp dmg) Thomas gets pretty close with his shield (if not on target), and while he has the orc reeling from the attempt (or hit, hopefully the enemy is backpeddling) he comes down with his bastard sword. (rolled 13 - 2 dominant side two-handed AT + 9 melee AT = 20; rolled 10 +5 STR = 15 hp dmg) Thomas feels his blade drinking freely of the blood of the orc this time. Thomas' head is filled with the rush of Domi's call for more, "Take his soul boy! Bring safety to this savage city. Bring him his own justice." He can hear Alemi's gavel as it bangs the bench of his court in anticipation of the judgement he will place on the orc's soul. It will be nice if the others see Brod fall, especially if he falls quickly.
Altemia, Kevil, and Tara (by Clay) [Blessed +1, Stoneskin] d20=16 Tuesday June 5th, 2001 12:07:50 AM
Altemia continues to make a dash for the back door, pulling her scimitar and sickle from their resting places at her hip on the way. The wolves are probably already trying to scratch down the door. Altemia feels the exhilaration of the push of the sprint, the beginnings of the burn in her legs and lungs alike. She feels the urgency with which her mind is trying to move her body with. She simply can't move fast enough. If she gets to the door this round with an action left she will try to open it, kicking it if she needs to. (rolled 16 + 2 STR = 18 If needed)
Tara and Kevil jump against the door and scratch at its frame trying to do anything that might open it so that they can get inside.

With nothing else left for her to do, the bard opens her throat and starts belting out a livening adventure ballad at the top of her lungs. (Inspire Courage, no effect yet)

Outside the building, Sly and Luke chase Altemia, who reaches the back door and begins to pull at it. (No actions left to open.) There are plenty of the lacquer screened widows along the north and west walls of the building.
On the main staircase, Sir Thomas easily locates Brod, and charges up the stairs at his opponent, who takes an attack of opportunity against him as he approaches, hitting the paladin with his longsword for 5 hp damage. In return, Sir Thomas' bull rush succeeds in driving the orc back into the curving wall behind him (burned your first attack roll for a bull rush strength check of 17, beating Brod's 10). Crushed against the wall by the big warrior's spikey shiel, Brod takes the 6 hp damage. (No actions left for sword attack.)
Across the room, Void staggers a bit from Trace's blow and takes a futile swing at the ranger as he flies away. Trace catches up to Radiant just as the falcon scratches his victim, whom Trace recognizes as Clurt, the former slaver pal of the four-armed Brother.
Entangled within the webbing on the east patio (rolled Reflex=16 for you - success so he's not Stuck), Alyndar takes aim at Void without quailing from the horrific site (rolled Will=28 for you - pay attention, Tim). His shot strikes true. . .
Ael d'Gaiaim(Shielded towards Balcony, Invis, SeeInvis, Bless[+1]) 2d4(2+4)+2=8 Tuesday June 5th, 2001 9:35:49 PM
Ael appraises the situation and quickly runs through the one door in the area. Once inside, he sees another door, and enters it. Thankfully, it leads to the main room, past the area of the web. Whispering thanks to whoever is watching, the mage runs forward towards the now embattled Sir Thomas.
Throwing caution to the wind, he drops his invisibility to begin a short incantation. Two missiles of thin magical force dart forward towards Void. (He takes 8hp damage.) Ael then ducks under the landing.
Ael (Tim) Clarification Tuesday June 5th, 2001 9:42:45 PM
Err, I mean of course, Ael races etc etc etc toward Trace (who is in combat w/ Void), not ST. Sorry for the confusion in me head.

Starting from the south changing room on the ground floor, Ael rushes incautiously through the only web-free door into the hot tub room, and thence on into the sweltering steam room. The next door lets him out into the narrow southwest corridor, which has a door labelled "Employees Only" at the west end. The east end is blocked by strands of web, through which he can faintly see Uteva. He cannot see the pool room from here, either.Orcs #2 and #3 each shifts one pillar eastward and fires a shot at Trace, both missing their target.
Bear runs around the north balcony with great, ground-eating strides. He plunges down the mist-shrouded grand staircase and fetches up behind Sir Thomas, flanking the paladin. "Now, we dance!" Brod takes advantage of this distraction to bleed Sir Thomas again for 9 hp damage.
In one smooth motion, Void pulls out a vial, unstoppers it, and poors it -- into his neck stump?
Orc #4 continues pelting out the Magic Missiles, this time changing his target to Alyndar. The two glowing bolts don't quite reach the Entangled elf as his Shield proves its worth. #4 moves to crouch behind the northwest corner of the bannister.
Orc #5 moves over to #4's vacated spot, where he fires down into the webbing nowhere near Lok.
Orc #6 abandons his bow and moves south of Clurt, readying a warhammer. He swings this at Trace, but overbalances in his eagerness.
Without a word, Clurt also drops his bow, in favor of a business-like greataxe. He opens a gash in Trace's armor with the wide blade, drawing blood (8 hp damage). He steps south of the ranger, wearing a grimace of satisfaction.
The flames on the southeast patio burn northward, incinerating webbing as they go. They reach Alyndar and burn him, doing 5 hp damage. The wizard is now free of the web.
Alyndar Tuesday June 5th, 2001 11:10:33 PM
Activating a magic item while sustaining damage from a spell requires Void to make a concentration check to continue activating the item, if he fails to do so there is not webbing in my area.
PHB p. 126 "Activating a . . . command word . . . item does not require concentration . . ." As there is nothing in the Wold 3rd Ed House Rules document to contradict this, I have to go with the PHB rule.
Alyndar was over 5' deep in the web when it FIRST appeared, so no even/odd to not be in it.
Okay? The web happened. Alyndar was burned.

Then with complete ineptitude he throws his regular dagger clanking off the staircase somewhere in the vicinity of Bear. With frustration the halfling screams a blood curdling cry (by halfling standards) trying to get the Bear's attention so Thomas is not completely flanked.

Sly jumps down from the window and run after Luke and Altemia, shouting at her "Altemia Slow Down, Don't Be Foolish, You'll Get Yourself And The Wolves Killed. Remember Two Is Better Than One, Wait For Me!"
As Sly is running to Altemia, he notices how many windows there is along this wall.
Altemia, Kevil, and Tara (by Clay) Wednesday June 6th, 2001 1:09:20 PM
Altemia opens the backdoor of the Swan and heads in cautiously. She makes her way to the stairs and goes up. She hushes the wolves and they remain quiet as they near the top of the stairs. She will crack the door only slightly to be able to see out onto the balcony without giving away her presence.

Ilsidur completes his summoning spell and cranes his neck to see the balcony overhead. A celestial badger appears at Sir Thomas' feet and promptly attacks Brod, clawing and biting (Atk 25,15,0). One of it's claws scratches the ors's boot (0hp damage).
Not particularly bothered by Void's bizarre appearance (Will=21), the dwarf casts Hold Person at the dangerous sorceror (Wil SV DC 16 or held for 4 rounds). As soon as the web has burned back to the lower stair landing, he drags the chest into place as a handy step, and takes cover southwest of it.

Brod tries to take advantage of the paladin's distraction, but misses his swing thanks to the badger's distraction.
Clurt and orc #6 swing at Trace as he flies to Sir Thomas' rescue, both missing.
After throwing his dagger, Lok realizes that he is still Entangled in the webbing, which is really interfering with his throwing ability (-4 Dex, therefore ranged attack bonus reduced by 2). In order to move through the webbing, he must make Escape Artist checks, as described below. He can only try this if he takes no other actions in that round.
Despite being slammed again by Alyndar, Void shrugs off Ilsidur's spell. The dwarf eventually gets the chest closer to the staircase landing (Climb DC to reach landing reduced to 10).
Sly and Luke reach the back door just as Altemia opens it. They find, to their dismay, that the back staircase is clogged with webbing. (To move through the webbing, it takes a full round and a Strength or Escape Artist check. For each full 5 points the check exceeds 10, you can move 5'. While in the webbing, you are Entangled: -2 to Attack and -4 to effective Dexterity.)
Most of the moveable kitchen and laundry furniture has been piled up against the doors to the pool room, partially blocking the doors to the north and south corridors. As they investigate the area, the south corridor door opens a bit, smacking into the barricade. They find the dumb-waiter (mini-elevator), which looks like it goes up to the balcony level. It will hold 1 medium-sized creature. The large kitchen hearth is still warm with banked coals.
Ael gets the door to the kitchen area open a couple of inches before it meets hard resistance. (Strength DC 14 to shove it wide enough to get through).

Orcs #2 and 3 shift east one pillar and pelt Ilsidur's armor with arrows, and #5 moves around the east balcony to the northwest pillar. Orc #4 is more successful; he releases two magic missiles that do 4 total damage to the dwarf, then moves to the next pillar west of #3.
Void has finally had enough of Alyndar. He puts up his wand and intones arcane words in his sepulchral voice. A bolt of electrical energy sizzles toward the pesky mage, dealing 27 hp damage (Reflex save vs DC 17 to take 13hp damage instead -- Use +5 as the combined Cover bonus for Shield and pillar.)
Orc #6 and Clurt move to surround Sir Thomas, #6 readying his shield as he goes. They both swing simultaneously at the paladin, somehow getting their weapons tangled with Brod's longsword. All three attacks miss.
Bear growls, "It is you who will die!" and pounds Trace with his gauntleted fists. The elf's armor softens much of the impact, and Trace takes 6hp damage.
Protection from Evil on Uteva expires at the end of her next turn. The party has initiative.

Thomas feels the sweat rolling down his face as it stings his eyes, and as it rolls down his back beneath his armor. He is driven by the sting as it mingles with the blood in the wounds he has already sustained. Oddly, he enjoys the feeling as it keeps him on the edge of his warrior's prowess.

The three archers on the north balcony pelt Ilsidur with arrows; one slips a lucky shot into the gap behind his shoulder plate (critical, 9hp damage).
Orc #4 stays behind his pillar and begins some elaborate spell preparations, while Void casts a spell of his own, and disappears from sight.
On the grand staircase, Bear moves up beside Trace and swings his great hairy arms. His fist catches the ranger's hip for 5 hp damage. Brod also attacks him, but he can't seem to get past Trace's quick blades.
Clurt and orc #6 continue to focus on Sir Thomas, whose armor protects him from their heavy blows.

Trace takes another bash from Bear but keeps up this sword twirling, in and out, left to right. Suddenly Trace picks up speed, causeing Brod to miss and then hammers a deafing blow to Bear (crit hit ac 30 doing 18-1=17 hps dmg). Blood sprays across the wall as the long sword cuts deep and true. With relentless speed, another thrust of his short sword finds Bears mid section again( hits ac of 21 doing 3-1=2 hps dmg). The floor begins to darken to allmost black with the amount of blood spilled there. If that was not enough, Radiant continues his dive bombing on to Bear and adds another gash in the back of Bear. (hit ac of 24 doing 2 hps dmg.) Trace readies for another attack while looking at Bear with a blood thirsty grin on his face. "It is your turn to hit the floor."
Sir Thomas [blessed +1 AT; bull STR (21)] d20=6 d20=20 d10=8 Friday June 8th, 2001 12:48:52 AM
Thomas feels the pressure of being so outnumbered, but fights on. He bides his time and lashes out with his shield at Clurt to keep him from cramping Thomas' already tight fighting space. (rolled 6 - 4 for nondominant hand AT + 1 blessed + 9 melee AT = hit 12 AC) unfortunately Thomas does not make good timing and the orc easily deflects the weak attempt. "Keep your distance, I won't miss forever." Despite his show of confidence, Thomas begins to doubt his skill and quickly asks for help as he fends off some feints from the two orcs that are concentrating their efforts on him. "Judge me fairly Alemi!" Thomas cries (not smite evil). He then makes a feint of his own acting as if he will attack the other orc (#6) like he did only a minute ago, but quickly changes the direction of his attack to bring the large bastard sword down on the unsuspecting Clurt. (rolled 20 = critical hit -2 for dominant hand attack + 1 blessed + 9 melee AT = hit 28 AC; doing 8 x 2 = 16 + 5 STR = 21 hp dmg) Thomas notices Clurt's eyes widen as his sword digs deeply to the hilt into the exposed chest of the off-guard creature. Thomas removes his sword from the creature's chest cavity quickly so as not to leave himself open to an attack from the other orcs standing around. As Thomas prepares to defend himself he offers some advice to #6, "It could have been you."
Altemia, Kevil, and Tara (by Clay) [blessed +1; stoneskin] ((currently private to DM)) Friday June 8th, 2001 1:14:59 AM
Altemia screeches as she squeezes through the door frame. "This way guys!! I've gotten through and I can hear the pool from here." Steping aside momentarily for Kevil and Tara to nudge past her, Altemia tries to catch up on what she missed in the fray. "Uteva, back door was plugged, so that advantage didn't pan out. Where are you and how do we fair in the main area? She charges her way down the hall into the pool room. "Aly is down you guys. We must hurry!" She calls over her shoulder, relaying the message to Sly and Ael as she sprints toward the staircase leading upstairs while staying underneath the cover of the balcony. She hopes to use the pillars as cover while she runs. "Kevil! Tara!! Attack the big one called Bear. Get 'em!" Altemia does her best to get close enough to Trace to cast a spell on him. As she enters the pool room she tries to inspire a little courage and spunk for the time she lost trying to get an upper hand. "Friends on the way to help! Southern Lights rally!! Hold strong on the balcony. You must hold the balcony my friends. We can aspire to victory yet."
Kevil and Tara make it through the opened door almost knocking Altemia down in their rush. they sprint into the pool area and make their way for the treasure chest that Ilsidur moved near the balcony. (OOC: They intend to use it as a springboard to jump to the upper level should they get there this round, which I don't expect them to do. Unless of course if there is a way to get up the stairs, which is preferrable. Kevil will go first to see if it is possible because he is in the lead.) They growl and bark as they race toward the upper level.
Alyndar d8+5=7 Friday June 8th, 2001 2:39:49 AM
Aly's eyes open to see Ilsidur covering him with his own body. Seeing an arrow stinking out of Ils's side, Aly fumbles into his belt and pops the top on a potion, bringing it up to Ils's ;ips, Aly tips it up and pours the contents into his mouth, healing him of 7hp of damage.
Aly then starts fumbling for a second potion, to eventually quaff himself.
Sly Foxx and Luke Friday June 8th, 2001 12:04:44 PM
As Sly let''s Ael in the kitchen area, "I'm glad your here,Ael. Altemia will not listen to me and is off on her own again!," then points to the stairwell and tell Ael,"The stairs are web and will take too long to get up that way. The only other way is the front stairs and go up from there. Do you have a quicker way, Ael?"
Ilsidur (electricity resisted, blessed, magic weapon) Friday June 8th, 2001 12:45:20 PM
Ilsidur drinks the potion provided by Alyndar, and says, "Thanks for the help. I need to get up on that balcony and help out Sir Thomas and Trace. If you need any more healing, give me a shout.
Then he moves over and climbs the chest, to be ready to jump up to the balcony next round.

The arrow hit that Ilsidur took last round was, in fact, a critical hit (rolled 52% for Fortification chance for normal damage -- forgot last turn).
Trace's clever longsword blow shows his skill (Natural 20 always hits, and is a Threat. Roll again to determine if it's a Crit: used your next roll. d20 +8 melee +1 enhancement +1 WFo +1 morale(Aid) -2 morale(Shaken) -2 2-weapon fighting +2 attacker on higher ground = d20+9 =22 hits, therefore, the blow is critical.) only does 16 hp damage (Don't multiply for the crit; roll an extra die. His off-hand weapon misses, scraping across Bear's mail (rolled for you d20 +8 melee +1 morale(Aid) -2 morale(Aid) -2 2-weapon fighting +2 attacker on higher ground = d20+7=16).
Sir Thomas shield bash doesn't even come close to hitting Clurt (d20=6 + 10 melee [remember, Str affects attack bonus] + 1 Bless -8 light off-hand 2-weapon attack = 9 Atk). The sword blow, however, strikes true, (Natural 20 always hits, and is also a Threat. Roll again to determine if it's a Crit: rolled for you. d20 +10 melee +1 Bless -4 primary hand 2-weapon attack when off-hand weapon is light = d20+7 = 23 hits, therefore, the blow is critical.), doing 22hp damage to the party's former prisoner(Don't multiply for the crit; roll an extra die. Rolled for you d10+5=9), and effectively separating his top half from his bottom.
The little badger claws Brod again (hit AC 19, 1 hp damage). The orc leader's boot is becoming blood-soaked.
Altemia and the wolves charge into the pool room, and are confronted by the burning web that still blocks part of the east side of the patio. It looks like it will take another 15 seconds or so to burn through.
Just south of them, a very healthy dwarf climbs onto the chest while Alyndar, Lok and Uteva concentrate on their separate struggles.
In the kitchen, Sly and Ael confer.

Orc #4 completes his spell and points a finger downward. A hyena appears on the patio just west of Kevil and closes to attack. It snatches a biteful of fur from the wolf's shoulder. #4 doesn't waste time watching this, but immediately returns to casting.
Orc #5 looks briefly startled, then drops his bow and runs east along the balcony, pulling #3 after him. They plunge into the mist that shrouds the stairs and arrive at the bannister, weapons in hand. #2 follows them more cautiously, circling round to emerge from the mist on the landing just north of Radiant. He is within Ilsidur's reach, but he is on higher ground and the bannister is between them. Bear steps down to the landing just east of #2, deeper into the mist. Spot check DC 13 to see what he's up to.
Brod slices into Trace once more (5 hp damage) then steps south to coldly straddle Clurt's bloody remains. #6 looks ready to bolt, but with a nervous glance at Brod, attacks the paladin anyway. His warhammer smashes into Sir Thomas' shield arm, doing 5hp damage.
The flames in the east webbing burn another 5' northward.

"Ael, I'm glad your here. I have to get to Altemia." said Sly as he turn and heads north, Stops and points to the stair well, "See it's full of webs, It will take too long to get up there." Then Sly opens a small door beside the stairs and look inside. "Well, look what we have here? A Dumbwaiter and it goes up to the next floor, too." Sly turns to Luke and tell the dog,"GO and help Little Sister and her wolves, and then find me. GO!" Then Sly will sit into the dumbwaiter, tells Ael, "When I get off this lift, you bring it back down stairs and come on up to help." Sly starts to pull at the ropes and starts to go up."
Ilsidur (electricity resisted, blessed, magic weapon) d20+2=18 d20+4=7 Sunday June 10th, 2001 9:49:05 PM
Ilsidur jumps up off the chest and grabs the balcony, pulling himself up [OOC: first roll is climbing check, successful vs DC 10]. He scrambles on his hands and knees under Radiant, holding his shield over his head, and ending in the square south of Bear. With his head under his shield, Ilsidur fails to notice what Bear is doing in the fog cloud [OOC: second roll is 7 vs DC 13].
Sir Thomas d20=7 d10=6 d20=5 Sunday June 10th, 2001 11:25:37 PM
Thomas notes the fear in #6's eyes and takes advantage of it. He does not take time to calculate a well planned attack at an opening in the orc's defense, but instead brings a backhanded swing toward the orc at neck level. (rolled 7 + 10 melee + 1 blessed = hit 18 AC doing 6 + 5 = 11 hp dmg) The speed of the attack and the power behind it should be enough to make it through any defense the frightened orc could put up. As the orc's body slumps to the ground Thomas retrieves a healing potion from his front pouch using his shield hand since it is conveniently close to the pouch. He spits in Brod's direction, "you should have let him run." Then Thomas raises his voice to carry Altemia's call. "Fight on my friends. Orc blood runs freely tonight. We have them on their heels. Two lie at my feet, a third to follow shortly! Raise Alemi's name to the heavens. Raise Domi's glory with your voices. Chase the evil from this place." (Rolled CHR check 5 + 4 chr = 9) Thomas attempts to (unmagically) inspire his friends and push them through any pain or fatigue they may be experiencing. He knows his own fatigue is wearing on him as the fight draws on and his blood and sweat further mingle together on his body. He also hopes the orcs that can't see him hear that their numbers dwindle and their odds worsen. Thomas learned early that fighting is not all physical.

Cursing at the continuation of bad luck with the burning web Altemia, Kevil, and Tara all focus their energy on what they can do to help the group. Thinking fast using her quick survey of the room, Altemia moves to within 30' of orc #4 and casts Summon Natures' Ally I. A badger appears at #4's foot, Altemia calls to it "Attack the orc my friend of nature", and it makes three quick attacks. (claw rolled 6 + 4 = hitting 10 AC; doing 2 + 2 = 4 hp dmg -- claw rolled 15 + 4 = hitting 19 AC; doing 2 + 2 = 4 hp dmg -- bite rolled 2 - 1 = hitting 1 AC) At least one of its claws swipes across the achilles tendon region of the orc, wich hopefully will disrupt whatever spell he thought he was going to cast. Tara moves to a flanking position on the other side of the hyena from Kevil. [OOC: smart wolves] They each take bites at the hyena (Kevil rolled 4 + 3 melee + 2 flanking = hit 9 AC; Tara rolled 3 + 3 melee + 2 flanking = hit 8 AC) but the hyena outmaneuvers each attack and manages to remain unharmed by their efforts.

Apparently recognizing Altemia's name, Luke moves toward the north corridor. Sly fits into the dumbwaiter with much folding of limbs, and scraping of armor. With Ael's help from below, he gets partway up to the upper floor. He will reach the top halfway through his next turn and will be able to take a partial action. (Loaded, the trip up takes a full round; Ael can bring the empty dumbwaiter back down in half a round.)
On the patio, Alyndar gets his potion out (move-equivalent), and drunk (standard). He is still lying on the floor south of his pillar. (Standing from prone is a move-equivalent action.)
The hyena snaps at Altemia when she goes by. Its powerful jaws tear at her armored thigh, doing 7hp damage. She gets into position near the north archway and begins casting her spell. Luke passes her and continues into the pool area to help harry the hyena. (SNA has a full round casting time. Altemia will finish the spell midway through her next turn and have a partial action left. Keep the badger's attack rolls for next round, but use 3rd Ed stats: 2 claws +5 melee, d2-1 damage; bite +0 melee, d3-1 damage.)
While Ilsidur clambers over the bannister, Orc #2 takes advantage of his distraction to attack; Bear smashes his heavy fist down at the crawling dwarf. Both hammer and mailed fist strike ringing blows on the large shield.
Sir Thomas' victim collapses in a bloody heap. (12 hp damage: Sir Thomas is still Inspired.)
The original badger's last furious charge at Brod's ankle is Inspired, and the little critter actually gouges flesh with all three attacks (4hp damage). It disappears before the limping orc can do more than growl in frustration. . .

Orc #4 finishes his spell and places a second hyena just west of Altemia. The spellcasting orc takes a deep breath and shouts in his native tongue, "The chest is clear!" He then launches into another round of chanting and arcane gestures.
At the sound of the shout, the concealed door under the stair landing opens, and an orc (#8) peeks cautiously around it, through the mist. With his eyes and crossbow trained on Alyndar and Lok, he moves just north of the door, Ready to shoot at the first sign of trouble from either of them. A second leather-armored orc follows him out, grabs one handle of the chest, and drags it into the little room under the stairs. #9 and the chest move through the doorway and out of sight. Curiously, the chest also remains sitting right where Ilsidur left it.
Hyena #2 immediately attacks Altemia, but its jaws snap at empty air. Surrounded by canines, Hyena #1 feints toward Luke, then whirls to bite at Tara, but the nimble wolf easily evades its attack.
On the staircase, orcs #2 and #3 shift south within reach of Ilsidur. Their weapons put little dents and scratches in the dwarf's armor. Orc #5 follows them, tightening up the row of orcs lining the bannister.
Bear also pounds at Ilsidur, without doing any significant damage. He steps north, hoping to draw the heavily armored priest down onto the level landing.
Brod calmly ignores his fallen teammate and attacks Sir Thomas, but the paladin catches the worst of the blows on his shield. Brod fishes his own stoppered vial from the pouch at his waist and gestures with it, as if toasting Sir Thomas' health.
Ael (Shielded toward the south, Invis, SeeInvis) Tuesday June 12th, 2001 12:34:24 PM
Ael sees Sly up the dumbwaiter, and then judging the delay to be too great, he makes a dash toward the door to the north of the northern stairs. Ael whispers to himself "If that one led around the balcony, this one must too..." Opening the door, he continues to run as far east as possible.

Altemia watches the chest disappear, but it seems to be still be there. She ponders that quickly until the hyena attacked her. Not liking to be snapped at Altemia quickly turns on the new hyena and attacks. Her scimitar misses, but her sickle pierces the hide on the carrion beast (8 hp dmg).
Tara and Kevil each try to strink a killing blow to the hyena they have flanked. Tara strinks a hard blow to the hyena but doesn't seem to be able to get the grip she needs ( 24 att 2 dmg). Seeing Tara attack, Kevil strikes next. He doesn't hit as hard, but grabs at the neck of the hyena and rips spilling its blood on the floor (att 15 dmg 7).

(damage 8hp(I hope I did this right)) Sly is in the dumbwaiter and is hauling himself up to the belcony level. "Boy! Now I'm gad that Alyndar made me do all that heavy work, Because pulling myself up in this thing is really hard work." Sly opens the dumbwaiter door and unfold himself and arms himself. Sly will look around and sees ork#4 making jesters. Sly will duck below eye level and sneek to the corner of the balcony by that time he'll be about 40' or 50' feet from that ork. Aperfect target for a rushing attack.

Sir Thomas [blessed +1 AT; bull STR (21); Inspired +1 AT dmg] d20=18 d10=10 d8=8 Tuesday June 12th, 2001 11:33:19 PM
THomas can feel the effects of the battle wearing on him. His gloves are soaked through with sweat. His clothes under his armor are weighted down with sweat mingled with some of his own blood, but Thomas is numb to the feeling of added weight. He can feel his muscles beginnning to tighten with the drawn out exertion. It is a struggle for him to keep his fighting stance technically unflawed, even in his magically enhanced state. And he is standing in a growing pool of slippery orc blood. However, if he learned to be anything from his friend and tutoring knight Sir Galdin it is strict adherence to his fighting technique, especially when he is tired. Thomas uses his own fatigue to his advantage, knowing that his opponent is feeling the same way. Thomas dances with the deadly and intelligent orc only shortly before he sees an opening in the orc's defense. Thomas quickly lashes out with his bastard sword and invokes the power of his lord and master Alemi. "Alemi smite down my foe!" [smite evil] (rolled 18 + 10 melee + 1 blessed + 1 inspired = hit 30 AC; doing rolled 10 + 1 inspired + 5 STR + 4 CHR smite evil + 5 levels of Thomas smite evil = 25 hp dmg) Thomas' sword cuts into the orc's flesh easily and then a loud pop is heard as the magic is unleashed into the orc. Thomas lets forth a wild and gutteral battle cry hoping to draw more attention to himself and Alemi's display of power as the orc reels from the blow. Shortly after the display, the smell of burnt flesh fills the air around the two. Thomas withdrawls his sword and returns himself to his guarding position, renewed with the power of Alemi, and drinks his potion down. (rolled 8 + 1 = 9 hp returned to Thomas) He drops the empty bottle when he is finished and as it clinks, clatters, and finally breaks on the hardwood floor Thomas wispers, "cheers."

Running through the laundry, Ael finds that Altemia left the door open. He is able to run down the north corridor, straight through to the north change room and on into the northeast passage with the many doors of the women's private baths.
Altemia finishes her spell, and a little badger appears on the balcony beside Orc #4. It attacks immediately, but draws back from the orc after its first strike. The badger spins around and races east toward the staircase. After that, Altemia has time to draw her weapons and fend off the second hyena, but not enough to attack it right away.
Nearby, the wolves and Luke tear into hyena #1. It falls from Luke's jaws, then fades away, leaving large quantities of blood puddled between the tiles of the patio.
Across the patio, Lok finally escapes the webs while Uteva sings. (All allies except the badger, Ael and Sly are now Inspired: +1 mrl to attack does not stack with Aid or Bless; +1 mrl to weapon damage, stacks; +2 mrl to save vs charm, stacks; +2 mrl to save vs fear replaces Aid and Bless bonus, stacks with Prot. from Evil.)
As soon as Alyndar begins casting, Orc #8 releases his Readied shot. The quarrel flies true toward the mage, but seems to hit some barrier just before reaching him and drops to the patio. Since the orc dragging the chest is "out of sight", Alyndar's Missiles strike #8 instead. The bolts knock him back against the wall and he sinks slowly to the floor, dropping his crossbow.
Up above, Orc #4 is too intent on his spellcasting to notice Sly sneaking into position.
Trace gets his potion out and drunk (No actions left to fly.), prompting Orc #2 to take a swing at him. But fighting uphill proves to be a problem for the orc, and his greataxe slips past elf's hip before Ilsidur cuts him down in his turn. Orc #2 beats his own axe to the ground.
Brod dies more gracefully, but dies all the same, as Sir Thomas' gods-inspired blade opens him neatly down the middle. The orc leader's former calm changes to perplexity, and his monstrous lips whisper, "My treasure!" as he falls to the blood-slick marble.

The downed orcs bleed. Orc #4 finishes his spellcasting and places a third hyena between Altemia and Tara. He screams, "Graddik has it!" Having apparently found a system that works, the orc begins casting all over again.
Down below, hyenas #2 and #3 have Altemia flanked. They both attack the elf, and the newest hyena gets a grip on the back of her knee (6hp damage) and tries to pull her down (Roll Dex or Str check of 7 or better, or be Tripped.)
Near the wolves, the web has burnt northward another 5'. There is a narrow path clear between the corner of the pool and the flaming web. (Balance check vs. DC 14 to pass safely by. If you fail, roll 1d2. 1=fall in pool, 2=burnt by flaming web for 1d6 hp damage.)
On the staircase, Ilsidur hears spellcasting from somewhere very close, and suddenly Bear disappears. The two orcs that remain standing tear back up the stairs toward the eastmost door on the north balcony. They jostle each other to open the door, and run through it. Ilsidur may make an attack of opportunity against Orc #3 or Bear(Invisible).
Sly Foxx and Luke d20+8=22 d8+3=9 d20+3=12 d6+3=6 Wednesday June 13th, 2001 8:21:07 PM
Sly now charges #4 orc, run up to him and hit the orc in circular twist. Then is ready to strike again, "Go down you scum-trash."
After killing the hyena, Luke looks to Altemia and notices another hyena enemy. Luke will lunges at the nearest hyena.
(OOC: I know that Sly hits but added no other pluses. But as for Luke I don't know.)
Alyndar d4+1=4 d4+1=2 Wednesday June 13th, 2001 8:21:44 PM
Aly rushes to the opening to where the orc dragging the chest went, and follows in, as soon as he sees the orc dragging the chest Aly lets loose his last magic missile, doing 6hp of damage.
(If another orc is in my way and am not able to target the orc with the chest, Aly will tag that orc with the mm.)
Loc Mufflefoot (Ceil) Wednesday June 13th, 2001 8:35:39 PM
The halfling finally makes it over to Alyndar and giving a vile of healing. "Now can you tell me where the best action is?" he ask his friend, As Loc takes his special knife (Twiddle), "I don't know if I should help Uteva and how to help her or go follow the chest?"
Ilsidur (blessed, etc.) d20+10=27 d10+5=13 d20+10=22 d10+5=15 Wednesday June 13th, 2001 8:41:38 PM
Ilsidur swings at Bear's back as the orc tries to run away, as an attack of opportunity. [OOC: Away from home, so did not subtract minuses for invisible, but hit AC 27 minus invisible amount, so I think Ilsidur hit.] The axe blade bites deeply into the big orc's back [13 hp damage]. Ilsidur shouts, "Stand and fight, you big stupid stinking pile of otyugh dung!"
Ilsidur continues to chase the Bear orc. [OOC: Lee, if Ilsidur can move and swing and try to hit Bear, he will. If he can't reach Bear, but can move and reach another orc and swing, he will. If Ilsidur can't reach Bear or any other orcs and swing in this round, he will continue to chase the orcs into the dorrway that they escaped into, moving at full run if necessary. If any orcs were in reach (first choice is Bear), then Ilsidur hit AC 22 for 15 hp damage.]
Ilsidur (blessed, etc.) Wednesday June 13th, 2001 8:43:38 PM
Ilsidur shouts as loud as he can, "We need someone who can see invisible at the front of the inn upstairs right away! Bear and Void, the chicken orcs, are escaping invisibly!"
Sir Thomas d20=8 d10=3 Wednesday June 13th, 2001 9:45:26 PM
Thomas doesn't even take the time to watch the orc finish his last breath before uttering a short verbal prayer, "Judge him fairly Alemi." He then turns and very quickly surveys the deteriorating scene. "Trace!! Get that chest. This can't be a total loss, and it will be if Bear and Void AND the chest all escape. Ilsidur and I will clean up here. Go my friend!" Thomas then levels his sword at orc #2 and charges with a renewed battle cry. He attacks the orc with his bloodied bastard sword. [OOC: I believe I am exactly 10' away from him.](rolled 8 + 10 melee + 1 blessed OR inspired + 2 charge AT = hit 21 AC; doing 3 + 5 STR + 1 inspired = 9 hp dmg) Thomas looks to his next opponent as he watches yet another foe fall at his feet, but he gains increasingly less pleasure as his primary targets continue to disappear.

Hearing the growls of another animal behind her, Tara turns and attacks the new hyena. She grabs it by its leg and pulls in an attempt to trip it. She does a bit of damage as she does this (att 15 dmg 3).
Kevil sees the small opening and tries to navagate it. He makes it through but he brushes the fire along his side (Balance 7, 1 hp dmg). He heads to the last place he saw a living orc. (OOC: I think that it is the two who stole the chest.)
Altemia sees Tara turn on her newest attacker and so turns to her old one. Moving in with both hands armed she swings with her scimitar and takes a decent slice out of its right side. She then attacks again, this time with her sickle and once again slices him up, but this time on his left side. (scim att 16, dmg 4; sickle att 14, dmg 5)
{OOC: I'm not certain what is happening with the badger since it ran away somewhere.)

On the balcony, Sly's sword cuts deeply into #4's shoulder. The orc's arm falls limp to his side, and brightly coloured energies crackle around the two of them as the spell he'd been building is released unformed (Concentration=8).
Ilsidur does manage to catch something with his blade when he swings for the spot where Bear had been (Concealment miss roll=86%). The blood that flies from his blow is red enough. However, between all the shouting and running of armored fighters, he immediately loses track of the big orc. He charges after #5 instead, easily sending the panicked orc on to Gargul's hands.
Sir Thomas plunges down the stairs into the mist, and runs unknowing right over the fallen orc #2. He ends up charging back up the other flight and past Ilsidur to cut down orc #3 in the entrance to the northeast guest room.
Altemia's badger arrives just in time to witness this. It latches on to the fallen orc's boot, out of frustrated aggression, perhaps, before disappearing for good.
Luke's jaws just catch hyena #3 by the scruff, and his teeth tear into the summoned animal, doing 7hp of damage before letting go. Tara and Altemia have this hyena flanked, and Tara trips it (Str check = 17). It lands heavily on its side, and struggles to rise.
When Altemia attacks the other hyena, her sickle seems to shave fur rather biting flesh as the scimitar does. (Atk rolls of 14 and 12 with 2-weapon penalties)
When Alyndar enters the concealed door, he finds himself in the strangely shaped room between the pool and the lobby. Inside the door, the ceiling is low, and slopes down even lower toward the east. There are long-handled scrub-brushes and small barrels stored here. To the north and south, the passage is narrow and lined with shelves filled with colourful bottles, soaps, sponges, and vials of all sorts (3' wide, between shelves). The shelves stretch all the way to a ceiling that slopes upward from the central area. The room assaults the senses with the powerful perfumes of a hundred different soaps and oils.
Alyndar sees the chest on the floor at the north end of the supply room. A door in the east wall is open, spilling mist into the passage, and an orc is hunched over there, cursing, trying to drag the chest through the doorway. His curses become more viscious as Alyndar's bolts slam into him.
Lok follows the wizard through the door, but finds he has no healing potions left to give. The Obscuring Mist boils through the two open doorways and quickly fills most of the supply room with dense fog.
After discovering that orc #8 is no danger to any of his pack, Kevil crowds past Aly and Lok and gets most of the way down the narrow passage. The chest blocks him from reaching the orc in the doorway this turn.
Trace and Radiant swoop down the passage past the rest of the crowd. An unseen mailed fist lashes at the ranger as he arrives at the north end (7hp damage). Bear appears, standing just west of the chest as Trace, hovering over the chest, stoops to attack the swearing thief, orc #9. Despite the interference of chest and doorframe, he hits his mark, but he gets in Radiant's way and the falcon misses. Orc #9 stops tugging on the chest to put more effort into his orcish cursing.
Ael rounds the corner of the northeast corridor to see this same orc just south of him at the outer edge of the fogged-in lobby, swearing and yanking at the pommel of his sheathed shortsword, and Radiant diving around his head.
Trace finally clears the eerie image of Void's headless body from his mind, and feels the heeby-jeebies fading beneath a new surge of adrenalin. (No longer Shaken.)
Protection from Evil on Lok will expire at the end of Uteva's next turn. . .
Sticky Situation - R9, Orcs (DM Lee) Friday June 15th, 2001 1:42:24 AM
Orc #4 holds his empty hands above his head and hops east out of Sly's reach. "Surrender, surrender!" he shouts in Common, so quickly that the words run together. "Don't kill me! I'll dismiss the hyenas!" His eyes are wide, and his breathing, frantic. He keeps glancing toward the east end of the balcony, at the gorey forms crumbled there, and the bloody warriors standing over them.
Even as their summoner is surrendering, the hyenas continue to attack. Hyena #2 bites at Altemia, getting a mouthful of leather, but crushing the underlying flesh between its powerful jaws (4hp damage). Hyena #3 flips to its feet and tries to retaliate against the wolf that wrestled it to the ground. Tara is to quick, easily dodging the snapping teeth.
The last remaining strands of webbing in the northeast patio flame and crumble to ash.
At the north end of the supply room, Bear roars (Ael and anyone in the supply room can hear this) and beats the floating ranger with his fists. He lands a solid right in Trace's midsection (5 hp damage) and tries to drag the elf down out of the air. (Make Grapple check of 26 or be grappled and pulled into Bear's space.)
Seeing this, the thief stops trying to draw his sword and resumes dragging the chest out the door and south, deeper into the fog and out of anyone's immediate sight. Radiant can make an attack of opportunity as he leaves; Kevil and Radiant can easily keep him in sight if they follow right away.
Anyone in or near the mist roll Listen and/or Spot checks.
Sly Foxx and Luke d20+9=20 d8+4=7 d20+3=5 Friday June 15th, 2001 4:50:52 AM
Unfortunately for the orc #4, Sly is into his down ward swing and hit him again ( 7hp damage). "Too late you should have spoken up sooner. The hyenas are almost gone by now. Besides you dirty Orc never keep your word." Sly spits into the orc face as the sword bites the orc again.
Luke will go after the hyena again. (or any hyena that's moving)
Loc Mufflefoot d20+12=18 d4+3=6 Friday June 15th, 2001 5:05:10 AM
Loc follows Alyndar into the room and see the Gray Elf hit the orc with bolts. "Now my sweet Twiddle Dagger, go and tasts Orc blood." sneers Loc as he throw the dagger. (for 6hp dammage)
Trace and Radiant d20+7=27 d20+10=25 d20+8=14 d8+4=5 d20+6=25 d2=1 Friday June 15th, 2001 8:17:43 AM
Trace gets hammered again by bear but because of his flying he is able to avoid his famous Bear hug(made check with 27 about time). Trace then swings twice down at Bear hitting once (hit ac of 25 for 5hps dmg.) Radiant continues on with his first target and is able to drag his talons in to the orc's shoulder(hit ac of 25 for 1hp dmg.) Trace screems out aloud. "Everyone down here, the chest and Bear are here. Hurry.
Ael d'Gaiaim (Invis, SeeInvis, Inspired[+1], Shielded To the south) 2d4(2+3)+2=7 Friday June 15th, 2001 9:59:44 AM
Ael rounds the corner to see a deep, concealing mist. He can barely make out the forms of Trace and Bear, fighting in the hall.
(OOC: Posting from work today, I do not have my char sheet with me, so I do not remember my spot/listen modifiers. If Gracious Lee-Anne would roll them for me on the next DM post, or would rather I do a private when I get home, that would be great.)
The mage looks around carefully for invisible figures, or Orcs who might be concealed by the cloud. If he spots none, he will get a line of sight on bear, and incant briefly. Two bolts of light race from his outstretched fingers toward Bear's body. (7 HP Damage.) At this point, Ael's invisibility fades.
Alyndar d20+5=24 Friday June 15th, 2001 10:04:29 AM
Aly follows the orc dragging the chest into the mist, he locates him (spot check of 24) and casts Daze.

Sir Thomas (blessed +1AT; bull STR 21; inspired) d20=5 d8=5 Friday June 15th, 2001 10:40:39 AM
Thomas hears Trace's call and immediately urgency and his subsiding fury at losing the troublesome Bear return. He looks briefly at Ilsidur as he is turning to head for the battle downstairs. "Let's get down there! Nothing left up here but corpses." Thomas covers the distance to the bannister and Steps over it. He lowers himself an arm's length and then drops the rest of the way to the bottom story. He runs (OOC: as fast as his tired legs will carry him) toward the room that the orcs disappeared into with the chest earlier. When he enters the mist he can't see a thing. (rolled 5 + 2 WIS = 7) "I'm here! It's Thomas! Where are you? Trace! Aly! Anyone! Which way? I'm lost in the mist!" Thomas stands in a defensive stance with his back against the door frame for increased protection from lurking orcs. He waits on the balls of his feet for someone to call out directions to Bear. "I'm coming for you Bear! It will not be long now!" While doing so, Thomas pulls a healing potion from his pouch and downs the contents. (rolled 5+1=6 hp returned)
Ilsidur (electricity resisted, blessed, magic weapon, inspired) d20-1=13 d6=2 d6=2 d20+7=17 Friday June 15th, 2001 12:48:30 PM
Ilsidur shifts 5' south, turns and vaults over the balcony on the east side, landing about 10' south of Radiant's position on the main floor. He falls hard in his jump, misjudging the distance, likely distracted by the fog cloud. [OOC: move action, figured jump was greater than 10', so took 2 hp subdual damage and 2 hp real damage, since Ilsidur missed the jump check. If jump was 10' or less, only took subdual damage; please let me know Lee.]
Concentrating hard [OOC: rolled 17 vs concentration check of 10+damage taken of 4, for total concentration check of DC 14], Ilsidur is able to cast a detect magic spell, and immediately starts to scan the area around him for invisible creatures or other magical auras. [OOC: don't expect Ilsidur to be able to pinpoint anyone, but at least learn a general direction, if someone invisible, or wearing a magic item, is in range.]
Ilsidur (electricity resisted, blessed, magic weapon, inspired) Friday June 15th, 2001 12:49:30 PM

The hyena biting her makes Altemia made. Taking her scimitar she smashes into the animal (Critical hit 14 hp dmg) taking it to its knees, if not finishing it off. She slshes at it again with her sickle to finish it off (att 20 dmg 4). (If it was dead, use sickle attack on the hyena behind me that Tara is attacking)
Tara bites at the hyena who had the audacity to rise again (att 14 dmg 8) and tries to trip it once again.
Kevil takes off after the orc with the chest using his nose (scent quality) to track him if necessary.
Uteva the Perpetually Stuck (Inspired) d20=16 Saturday June 16th, 2001 1:38:14 PM
Uteva wriggles to no avail and keeps up her inspiring song. The frustration of watching her friends fight without her begins to wear on the bard's resolve. A frown marrs her brow when she sees Sly refuse the spellcaster's surrender.

Sly slices open Orc #4's exposed, unarmored belly, and the orc falls at his feet, trying feebly to staunch the flow of blood from the wound.
Lok throws Twiddle toward the fight at the north end of the fog-filled supply room (-4 to throw into a melee). The mist is so thick that he can't tell if he hit Bear.
In fact, the dagger skitters harmlessly off Trace's shoulder. It provides just enough distraction for Trace to get past Bear's guard himself. The smell of the orc's fresh blood is hardly noticeable amidst the flowery bath soaps.
Radiant chases Orc #9 through the dense fog of the lobby and out the front door, harrying and clawing him.
Ael has to move south, right up to the edge of the mist, in order to see through the doorway into the supply room where Bear and Trace are fighting. The big orc roars again when the wizard's bolts strike him. Ael can hear Orc #9 dragging the chest SE through the lobby. (Listen=15)
Alyndar makes his way through the narrow, misty supply room and maneuvers past the fighters to get out the north door. Bear takes a swing at him as he passes and clips the elf's jaw (7hp damage). Aly is able to follow the sound of orcish cursing (burned your Spot for Listen), flapping wings, and something heavy being dragged, but his quarry had quite a start on him -- Orc #9 and the chest loom into sight through the heavy mist just as the elf crosses the lobby to the main doors. (Double move - no actions left for casting, and couldn't see him to cast until within 5'.)
Sir Thomas drops safely from the balcony (Jump=17) and ducks back into the mist, where he runs into Lok just inside the doorway. (Double move - no actions left for potion) Disoriented by the thick fog and the heavy perfumes in the narrow supply room, he can't tell which direction the sounds of fighting are coming from.
Ilsidur's jump is more awkward, and he feels the full 18' when he lands in the northwest corner of the lobby. However, the pain is quickly behind him (no need for Concentration see p. 151) and he casts his spell. He becomes aware of magic all around him, as though he were bathing in it.
Altemia and Tara, with the distracting help of Luke, despatch both remaining hyenas. The two animals disappear as though they had never been, though the wounds they caused are all to real.
Kevil easily follows after the chest-lugging orc, flanking him with Radiant. The wolf has to sneeze several times to clear the overpowering scents of bath perfumes from his nose . . .

Orc #4 doesn't look too happy with Sly, but he also seems to think better than to try anything with the half-elf looming over him. Instead he bleeds, and moans.
In the bath supply room, Bear attacks Trace furiously, landing two heavy punches (8hp total) and moving toward the ranger to again try to grapple him. (Grapple DC 19 or be held, and Bear moves into Trace's space, within arm's reach of Ael.)
Out in the street, Orc #9's curses turn to a steady mutter that Alyndar understands as, ". . . paid for this. No, way! Easy job? Bah. Outta my way, bird!" The orc abandons the chest in the doorway and runs northeastward, across the mist-obscured street. Radiant may make an attack of opportunity. Any of the three at the door can follow him by sound (or scent).
Suddenly, the deep, sepulchral tones of Void's voice roll through the building, cutting across the sounds of battle and Uteva's song. "Stop where you are, Chaos-Cursed! Your little singer stands helpless in my power. Surrender the field immediately, or I will char the meat from her bones!" Uteva can hear the quiet tones of spellcasting coming from somewhere very close by, and the headless orc appears on the patio just west of the webbing.
Alyndar d8+5=13 Saturday June 16th, 2001 8:09:22 PM
Aly will move to the chest, and stand there with it. Aly pulls out a clw potion and drinks it, healing himself of 13 hit points, healing him to his max hp.
Ilsidur (electricity resisted, blessed, magic weapon, inspired) Sunday June 17th, 2001 12:26:43 AM
Ilsidur hears Void's voice, and thinks, "Well, so that's where he has run to." Then he casts Expeditious retreat on himself, and runs 30' north past Ael and around the corner heading west, down the hallway of the private women's baths.
On the way by, he says to Trace, "Finish that big stupid orc off, I'm moving to help Uteva."
Trace and Radiant d20+7=16 d20+8=21 d6+2=3 d20+6=11 Sunday June 17th, 2001 1:24:48 AM
Trace gets hammered again by Bear and is pulled from the air by him, (failed dc with a 16). As Bear pulls Trace into his grasp, Trace is still able to manuver his short sword and manages to stab his upper chest with yet anotehr wound. Trace dives again at his fleeing party coming party.
Sly Fox and Luke d20+4=24 Sunday June 17th, 2001 4:55:26 PM
(OOC:rolled for Direction Got a 24)
Sly stop spinning and lowers his sword, "Next time Orc, surrender a little faster." At this point Sly hears that horrible voice of Void. *Surrender not likely, we'll fight in another direction.* Sly listens closely, Void is very close, about 15 to twenty feet west of Uteva, sixty feet down and about fifty feet from where he(Sly)is standing. Sly turns and tells the orc. "You stay put and don't say a word or I'll cut your heart out, before I die." Sly takes the scroll case out of his arrow case and opens it, taking out the scroll of Glitterdust. "and to think I almost sold you." Sly opens the scroll and In a low voice speaks the words on the scroll. Then points to the place where Void is, he hopes.
Luke looks to Altemia and sees that she is ok. Luke will go running to Sly.

OH - OH! Do you hear something evil popping up around here?" Loc said to Sir Thomas. Loc turns very slowly and with the anger that rises from the depts of this halfling. "Not You again, I though I hurt you the last time we met? Want some more Do We?"
Sir Thomas (blessed +1AT; bull STR 21; inspired) d20=17 d20=1 d20=12 d10=8 Sunday June 17th, 2001 7:27:59 PM
(rolled for listen 17 + 2 WIS = 19 and spot 1 + 2 WIS = 3 ) Thomas' heart sinks when he hears Void's threat to attack their helpless friend. He thinks he has determined where Trace and Bear are fighting, but can't see through the thick mist to be sure. When Lok speaks to him Thomas wonders how the halfling has faired because he hasn't kept tabs on his friend due to his own preoccupation with battle. "Good to hear your voice Lok. Uteva is in trouble, can you save her? I've got a date with Bear I think he and Trace are fighting to the north. Let's hurry!" Not letting on that he is at a personal crossroads as to what to do, Thomas throws caution to the wind in his hurry as he jogs toward where he thinks Trace and Bear are fighting. The only sound Thomas makes as he goes comes from his armor clanking as he jogs. He doesn't even breath heavily despite his level of fatigue. He holds his shield up in front of him to catch any attacks that he won't be able to see coming . . . he hopes.
Thomas emerges from the mist as it swirls around his large frame to find himself in the midst of a furious struggle between his flying friend and the creature called Bear. Thomas heard the ruckus get louder as he approached, but pulls up his jog short as he immediately enters the fray, almost unexpectedly. "There you are coward." Thomas states coldly as he lashes out with his sword. (rolled 12 + 10 melee + 1 blessed or inspired = hit 23 AC; doing rolled 8 + 5 = 13 hp dmg) He strikes true and adds Bear's blood to the collection on the blade of his sword. Thomas has no comments for Bear at this point in time, only a look of shear determination to rise to the occasion. Thomas takes special care to hold the spiked shield against his chest (giving up the ac bonus if required by this action) so that if Bear hugs him he'll be impaling himself with the shield spikes.

Slipping through the door leading into the pool room, Ael will move west, until he is by the north side of the pool. He then conceals himself behind a pillar.

Then suddenly Lok thinks better of it. Nearing the pool's edge the halfling shouts back at the faceless terror "Fight me instead Void, didn't you have a good time last time? Oh i forgot, the big mean orc couldn't take little Lok." He winks at that and continues "How's that belly feeling? What's the difference between the Faceless One and cheese? One is smelly, full of holes, and looks like something that came out of a cow's backside, the other is cheese." The halfling laughs heartily at his very odd joke hoping to provoke the evil mage's anger to him instead. Looking cautiously at the pool below him the halfling prepares to jump in should any flames or anything else spew from the orc's fingertips. (can do a dex check if need to to try to move before i get hit if i'm succesful in provoking his anger to me instead).
Uteva the Stuck (Inspired) d20+6=20 d20+6=17 d20+4=10 d20+7=20 Monday June 18th, 2001 2:52:14 PM
Uteva stops singing as soon as Void speaks. (Listen=20). Although she can see Void on the patio, she can hear his voice coming from nearby in the southwest corridor. She stares hard at Void and, noticing how the glittering motes of Sly's spell seem to drift through him, becomes convinced that the image is an illusion. (Will=17)
Though she tugs as hard as she can (2 Hero Points to increase roll, Str check=17), she still can't seem to pull free of the gluey webs. The bard whispers as quietly as possible to Altemia, Ilsidur, Trace, and Alyndar. "That thing on the patio isn't real -- Void is somewhere south of the wall, and I think he's got me. Waard's teeth! I hate feeling helpless. Tell the others . . . it's been a priviledge knowing you all. And take these Brothers down for me!"
Teva then fills the room with her own shouting. "An interesting choice, Lord Void," she taunts. "If we believed you to be honourable, my friends might accept your offer. But you have already broken laws to get at Chloe's treasure, and you and your brothers are known slavers and craven raiders who run when things go against them.
"We all know there is more going on here than a simple Challenge. . Your quarrel with us stretches far beyond the bounds of Hook City. We are not fools, to believe you will spare my life -- any of our lives -- if we surrender to you now. I suggest you run again; if my friends reach you now, they'll tear you limb from limb." The bard does her best to convey her conviction, and to keep any hint of her fear from her voice. (Bluff=20)
Teva continues to relay whispered Messages as long as she is able.
We Don't Do Ultimatims - R10, Party (DM Lee) d20+11=28 d3+4=6 Monday June 18th, 2001 3:06:37 PM
At the front door, Alyndar gets his potion out and drunk, while Kevil stands guard.
Radiant chases his victim through the mist and out into the clear night air. They reach a wall, and cut around a corner into a dark alley.
Ilsidur remembers that he expended his spell when he healed Alyndar. He has to run the old-fashioned way. As he clanks past Ael, Bear's heavy paw swipes at him from the doorway to the supply room, catching his ear a ringing blow (6hp damage). On the plus side, his auric vision settles down into something more useful once he leaves the magical mist behind. (Used previous Concentration check to maintain Detect Magic.)
Inside the supply room, Sir Thomas enters the scuffle between Trace and Bear. Blows fall, blood flows, grunts and the ring of steel-on-steel sound through the building. Suddenly the confusion stops, and the two warriors find themselves staring at each other over the sprawled form of the great brute. Bear has fallen.
Ael saves his spell and steps over the unconscious form to make his way through the supply room and into the pool area, where he positions himself north of the northeast pillar.
On the balcony, between Sly and the wimpering Orc #4, stands a tall brass brazier filled with glowing coals. Two strangely wrapped arrows lean against the bannister. A strung short bow lies discarded on the floor nearby. As Sly finishes reading from his scroll, a burst of glittering particles drift down over the area just west of the web. setting the air a-sparkle. They outline the nearby strands of web, the patio floor, and the wall. (Spot DC 15 to notice that they don't cling to Void.)
Luke, who doesn't know how his friend got upstairs, whines anxiously, paces back and forth, then moves west around the patio toward the only visible enemy, following Altemia and Tara. The three of them arrive within easy range of Void's image.
Uteva talks. (Her allies remain Inspired for another 5 rounds. The recipients of her Message have a +4 bonus to their Will save vs. DC 15 to disbelieve the illusion.) . . .
And Counterbluff - R11, Orcs (DM Lee) d100=87 d100=100 d100=97 d20+4=17 d6+2=7 Monday June 18th, 2001 4:26:54 PM
Void's mocking laughter echoes from the high-arched ceilings. "Brave words, little girl. But you mistake me. Now is not the time for our final confrontation. I assure you that your friends can save your insignificant life tonight if they surrender to us now!"
In a dark alley far, far away, Orc #9 swats irritably at the bird who continues to attack him. He opens Radiant's belly with a lucky swing of his sword. (7hp damage) He turns and keeps moving away from the Silky Swan.
Sly Foxx and Luke d20+5=24 d20+3=8 Monday June 18th, 2001 7:22:05 PM
(ooc: Sly 24 burning arrow, Luke 8 for bite)
Sly hopes that it is enough for the party to center on Void. " HOLD ON UTEVA, I'm sorry but I have to hurt you, BUT I have to do this. Yell at me later." Sly will pick up the short bow and one arrow. Sly lights the arrow and lets it fly at the web, and hopes to set the web on fire. "When your FREE get out of his way." Yells Sly, then to Luke Sly yell "Get HIM!"
Luke hearing his master, sniffs and attack what he thinks is an ankle.
Alyndar d20+4=23 Monday June 18th, 2001 7:30:16 PM
Aly makes an Intelligence to remember the way to the balconey that over looks the pool and runs as fast as he can to get there. (regular move is 30, doubled makes it 60) Aly moves his full move and positions himself to the right of the fire brazier on the south ledge overlooking the pool.
Sir Thomas d20=5 Monday June 18th, 2001 8:49:19 PM
Thomas looks with surprise at Trace, and then with all of the speed that a thought can occur he exclaims. "Trace, there's fire upstairs in those braziers. You'll get there faster than I can. Get it and fly in to Uteva and fly her out. Use the fire to dispense of the web as you go. Hurry! I'll take care of this mess. Go with Alemi's speed my friend." [OOC: go at x5 speed reckless and out of control!] Thomas bends down to examine the orc with caution, holding his sword across the creature's neck as he does so. (rolled Heal 5 + 9 = 14 for first aid to stablize) If the large orc is indeed unconcsious he will stop the bleeding to prevent a premature death. When he has performed that action he will grab Bear by the collar and begin the task of dragging him from the smoke. Thomas makes his way toward the pool room. On his way Thomas addresses the unseen menace in a voice that carries through the entire hall. "Void, I have Bear at MY mercy, just as you have Uteva at yours. There will be no surrendering to . . . US . . . as you put it. We can arrange a trade of some sort though. Stay your hand Evilbringer. I'm on my way to the pool room. It is not against my moral code to retaliate to an unethical act. I say again, STAY YOUR HAND EVILBRINGER!"
[OOC: If the Bear is faking, Thomas will strike at the orc before he has an opportunity to do so to Thomas.]
Ilsidur (electricity resisted, blessed, magic weapon, inspired) Monday June 18th, 2001 10:31:32 PM
Ilsidur keeps running, as fast as his dwarven legs will carry him. He runs westward, through the room with the round pool, and west down the narrow hallway towards the unblocked door into the laundry area. He whispers, "Keep the headless one talking, help is on the way. Remember, Trace can fly, and can likely get to you soonest, if you can whisper to him. He can get distracted in a fight, so make sure he understands that Void is actually SOUTH of the wall to the west of you, so Trace will have to burn his way through the web to the narrow hallway to the west of you. Good luck. I'm not ready to say our goodbyes just yet."
Radiant Tuesday June 19th, 2001 1:20:50 AM
Radiant is struck by a heavy blow but is still able to fly. He quickly climbs out of reach but still within sight. With nothing else left to do, he begins screeching loudly to warn the others and to know where he is.
Trace d20+4=9 d20+4=11 d20+4=19 d20+4=16 d8+5=7 d20+4=10 Tuesday June 19th, 2001 1:25:29 AM
rolled two hero points
Trace rolls 19 for listen check to hear Radiant and then rolls 16 for direction of where he is at. If successfull Trace will free Uteva with the fire and then flay reckoulsy to his friend Radiant. If able to free Uteva and make it to Radiant in time, feeds Radiant healing potion (gained 7 hps). Rolled 10 for spot to see where the orc is pulling the chest.
Ael (SeeInvis, Shielded South) d20+5=24 2d4(4+3)+2=9 Tuesday June 19th, 2001 9:11:51 AM
Ael creeps south along the pool, using his magical sight to (hopefully) spy out Void. (Spot Check above.) If Void is sighted, he will shout the headless one's location, and let another magic missile spell fly. (Readied Action; See damage rolled above.)
(OOC: Grr, Again I'm without my character sheet, sorry Lee-Anne. I _believe_ I got the spot modifier correct...)
Uteva the Chip (Stuck, Inspired) d20=19 d20=5 Tuesday June 19th, 2001 5:35:59 PM
"I'm going to let Sir Thomas handle the bargaining," Teva whispers, "since he's the one with the goods." She watches the flames advance through the web, awaiting her chance to move, and continues to relay whispered Messages and updates on what she can gather of Void's movements. (Str=19, Listen=12)
Altemia (Inspired, Barkskin), Tara and Kevil (Inspired) d20+9=27 d20+10=25 Tuesday June 19th, 2001 5:41:22 PM
Listening to Uteva, Altemia pulls a scroll from her belt and unrolls it. She quickly reads the SNA I scroll and calls forth a hyena and positions it At the location that Uteva told her. She hopes that if it can't see Void, it might be able to smell him. (Spot 27, Will 25)
Kevil continues to guard the chest and Tara waits for orders from her two-legged friend.
We Don't Do Ultimatims - R11, Party (DM Lee) 4d4(2+3+1+3)+4=13 Tuesday June 19th, 2001 5:42:36 PM
Sly retrieves the bow from the floor and lights an arrow. He will be able to fire it next round.
Luke just can't seem to lay his teeth on the dark-cloaked figure.
Alyndar reaches the southeast brazier with plenty of time to spare.
One of Bear's wounds is beyond Sir Thomas' skill to patch up. The big orc is losing a lot of blood. The paladin drags him out the concealed door into the pool area.
As soon as Sir Thomas speaks his challenge, Void's image disappears from the patio (thus saving Ael from OOC-knowledgitis) and he sends four glowing missiles streaking toward Uteva (readied action, 13hp damage). The bard can now see the headless orc standing in the southwest corridor. "In that case," he explains, "I can't allow you to free my bargaining chip prematurely."
Ilsidur reaches the door to the laundry, which stands open.
Trace hears Radiant, but can only tell that he's somewhere east of the Swan. The ranger flies over the stairs to the brazier near Alyndar, lights the remaining fire arrow, and drops it over the bannister into the webs directly below. They catch fire instantly, as Trace prepares to fly outside. (No actions left this round.)
Despite moving all the way to the south wall of the pool area, Ael is unable to see Void.
The Gentle Art of Barter - R12, Orcs (DM Lee) d100=69 d100=33 d100=89 Tuesday June 19th, 2001 5:54:46 PM
"Just so that there are no misunderstandings," Void says, "the next attempt to free the girl will mean her death. Now, I propose this bargain: we will cede the Challenge to you, in exchange for my living brother and the contents of the armorer's chest." Without looking at him directly, Uteva can only tell that he is moving around a bit. "Oh, and you may have your singer back, as well."
Somewhere far, far away, Radiant trails his orc to the door of a building. The orc opens the door and, holding Radiant off with the threat of his sword, slips inside, closing it behind him.
Alyndar Tuesday June 19th, 2001 6:24:49 PM
From above everyone hears a shout come from Aly, INCOMING !
Aly takes a 10 foot step and then leaps over the banister into the pool below, attempting to land 6 to 8 feet from the edge where the webbing is in a straight line to Uteva, making the biggest splash possible in the direction of Uteva.
CANNONBALL EXPRESS !
Sly Foxx and Luke Tuesday June 19th, 2001 7:10:02 PM
(OCC: my speed is 30' walking, Now Sly will be running (60'?)Yes?)
Sly is ready to let the arrow fly, BUT holds up when he hears Void voice. "Where is he? Luke is biting a pure air, WHERE is this faceless wonder?" Then a though hit Sly, " Why that son of a beetle dung. That big bag of slim, He PHASE out! But where? He has to be close. Where would I go, and cast a killer spell? Why! Yes! behind the wall, he phase to the other side of that wall, he phase south of where I cast the spell. Well, No Face here I come." Sly turns to the weak orc #4, "I'm leaving you now, you can go to where ever you want, But If you should use any more Spells. I WILL COME BACK AND KILL YOU." With this said, Sly stump the burning arrow and runs for the Dumbwaiter.
Luke sniffs around and wonders where was the foot he sniff a while ago?
Ilsidur (electricity resisted, blessed, magic weapon, inspired, but unfortunately still moving at turtle speed) Tuesday June 19th, 2001 9:01:52 PM
Ilsidur runs through the open door into the laundry room and turns south to run to the other unblocked door. [OOC: by my figuring, running through squares that have no more than half of the area blocked by barricade, I figure Ilsidur can move the 12 squares and reach the other door.]
If the door is open, he glowers at the headless orc. If the door is closed, he ends his run by banging into the closed door. [OOC: I realize he can't try to open it this turn; Ilsidur only does it to distract the orc magician.] As he reaches the southern door into the hall containing Void, Ilsidur shouts (regardless of whether it is open or not), "Void, you and I are gonna dance right now, unless you only attack helpless ladies! You are lucky to be missing your head, otherwise you would be as ugly as your dead brothers!"
Sir Thomas (blessed +1AT; bull STR 21; inspired) d20=14 Tuesday June 19th, 2001 9:35:08 PM
Nervous about not being able to stop Bear's bleeding Thomas debates whether or not to stop and take more time instead of rushing the healing touch. He quickly determines that in all fairness he should give it another shot, especially if he is going to bargain on the basis that Bear is alive. Lying is not a trait that Alemi would support, not even if it meant extinguishing a powerful source of evil. Thomas grows quite angry when Void attacks Uteva going against the negotiations. "VOID, I said stay your hand. I was not joking." Thomas removes one of Bear's pinky fingers with his bastard sword. "I have retaliated as I said I would. Let's keep this in the bargaining stage. No one will harm you as long as you stay in the good graces of the negotioation. Did you hear that my friends?" So in the good graces of his previous decision, Thomas stops dragging the orc and bends over top of him. Thomas applies what healing knowledge that he has to stop the bleeding (rolled 14 + 9 WIS = 23) and seems to have more success this time. Whether he is successful or not, THomas knows he has given his best effort. He continues to make his way to the pool area either way as he continues the negotiation. "We don't want to walk out of here WINNERS OF THE CHALLENGE, so you can keep that. We WILL walk out of here alive though. We will not be giving you the chest, but we will trade you Bear for Uteva. Even up trade. We value Uteva, you value Bear. Think about it."
Trace Tuesday June 19th, 2001 10:56:44 PM
Trace grapbs another readied arrow and lights it flying to Uteva burning his way to her and if able he will drop down in front of her to shiled her from Voids attacks. "Listen her freak! You have lost, Sir Thomas dosnt allways speak for the rest of us and as I see it, you can try and take our friend down but you will die trying. Bear is dead no matter what it looks like now, the chest is ours and you know have to go thourgh me to kill my friend. Heck, even if you do I will spend every last dime of mine to get a priest to bring her back. You have no one to do that for you. So, you can go out in a blaze of glory or you can save your own neck and get out of here. Choose now or die." Trace manuvers himself the best that he can to be inbetween Teva and whatever he cant see while buring away at the webs to set her free. If he is able to Trace will grab hold of her and fly her to safty.
(ooc: not sure if I need to roll any checks for this)
Radiant Tuesday June 19th, 2001 10:57:51 PM
Radiant perches himself on a nearby rooftop and keeps watch over the door.
Ael (See Invis, Shielded to the west) Wednesday June 20th, 2001 3:01:32 PM
Cursing, Ael hears the missiles impact Uteva, but is unable to see anything through the web.
He stops short, taking stock of his available resources. Then, apparently deciding on a course of action, he leaps into the pool, and, holding onto the side, paddles westward towards the end of the web. Upon reaching clear ground, he pulls himself out; dripping, but closer to the threat.
Ael cannot see Uteva even now, but knows that if someone is threatening her, they must have come from the passage he ran through only a minute before.
Uteva the Perpetually Stuck (Inspired) d20=16 Wednesday June 20th, 2001 8:38:41 PM
Uteva grits her teeth as the webs around her ignite. As soon as she is free to move, she tries to tow Trace to the cover of the nearest accessible pillar (Str=16). "Good to see you," she quips, "But this isn't the time to hang around and chat."

Altemia finishes reading her scroll with a flourish, and a half-grown hyena appears beside Void and immediately attacks him. Alas, the gangly adolescent overextends itself, then becomes tangled in the hem of the dark cloak (Atk=2).
The Amazing Acrobatic Alyndar takes a flying vault over the bannister (rolled for you, Jump=10). In midair, he realizes that he didn't take enough of a running start. He gets about 3' out from the edge of the balcony and plummets to the patio below. Thick, sticky strands of webbing cushion his fall when he lands just shy of the pool. (Roll Reflex save vs DC 15. Success = Entangled and 2hp subdual damage. Failure = Completely stuck, and suspended in the webs 4' above the patio. You may choose to fail the roll.)
Sly climbs into the dumbwaiter and gets partway down to the ground floor. Ilsidur can hear the rumble of its operation as he runs by. He arrives at the partly open south door to see Void, a sorry-looking hyena, and beyond them, the web-swathed bard.
Sir Thomas learns that mutilating his patient seems to have worsened the big orc's condition considerably.
Since there are no more fire-ready arrows left nearby, Trace retrieves the one that he dropped onto the patio (rolled even-odd to determine that it's still burning). Swinging the makeshift torch, he quickly makes his way to Uteva, setting the surrounding webs alight. (Trace, roll Reflex save vs. DC 15 or be burned 6hp damage.) The freed bard suffers burns of her own (4hp) before she drags Trace away.
As soon as Trace arrives to the rescue, Void shouts, "So much for your good faith. I warned you of the consequences." Keeping his guard up against the hyena, he casts his readied spell (Conc.=28) and releases a lightning bolt at the escaping pair, doing 24hp damage to each. (Roll Reflex save vs DC 17, adding +2 cover bonus. Success = take only half damage. Rolled even-odd; Alyndar is not affected by the bolt.)
Ael swims around all this insanity. . .

"A brother for a brother." Void's words drip with satisfaction. "Things will not go so easy for you when next we meet." He quickly casts a spell, easily fending off the young hyena (Conc.=28), and disappears from the corridor.
Sly Foxx and Luke Wednesday June 20th, 2001 9:32:27 PM
Sly is going down the Dumb waiter faster Than when He was going up, But he finally makes it to the kitchen area. Sly kicks at and opens the dumb waiter door, then slides to the floor. then roll and get to his feet. Sly turn his head to see Insider at the door and Sly ask "Is Void still alive? I have a score to settle with him!!"
Sir Thomas (blesssed +1 AT, bull STR 21; inspired) Wednesday June 20th, 2001 10:38:37 PM
"NO!" Thomas reacts to Void's attack and the crackle of the lightning. "UNGRATEFUL!! . . ." Thomas cuts his sentence short that leaves his hatred hanging in the humid air. He thrusts his sword into the body of Bear. "Then the deal is struck coward!" Thomas cries to Void as he pulls his large sword from the orc. He then sheaths his sword as he rushes toward his friends pulling healing potion after healing potion from his belt pouch until he has all three in his hands. When he gets to either of his friends he hands them out or administers them as quickly as he can.
Ilsidur (electricity resisted, blessed, magic weapon, inspired) Wednesday June 20th, 2001 11:14:51 PM
Ilsidur turns back to Sly, and says, "I'm afraid Void has escaped." Having had nothing happen to disturb his concentration, Ilsidur moves forward 15' and scans the area in front of him with Detect Magic, to make sure nothing is magically hiding.
After finding out that Void is truly gone [OOC: I assume], Ilsidur turns back to Sly and says, "You need to get back upstairs and secure our one prisoner, that orc on the balcony. He may be able to tell us where we can find Void."
Trace and Radiant d20+3=6 d20+5=21 d8+5=9 Thursday June 21st, 2001 7:49:46 AM
Trace is unable to keep from being burned while helping free Uteva (6hps dmg) but is able to dodge the main blast of the lighting bolt that Void cast his way (12hps dmg). Bleeding and burned Trace stands guard over Uteva waiting for help to arrive. As he waits he looks to see if he or Teva need help the most and retrives a potion and pours it into Teva's mouth or drinks it down himself. (one of us gets 9 hps back)
Ael (Shielded to the south, SeeInvis) Thursday June 21st, 2001 11:41:40 AM
Ael cries out as he sees Trace and Uteva hit by the blast, and immediately turns around, swimming toward the gap where Trace and Uteva lie.
Ael will assess the situation, and if one of the two is prone, he will feed him/her one of his healing potions (+5).
Lok Mufflefoot Thursday June 21st, 2001 2:27:52 PM

Altemia, Tara, and Kevil Thursday June 21st, 2001 6:29:13 PM
Seeing that Trace and Uteva are being well cared for, Altemia heads toward Kevil and the chest. She wants the chest that caused all these problems where she can keep an eye on it.
Tara swim over to Uteva and Trace and offers a comforting presence.
