Myth of Legends

Into the Great Unknown (DM Dave)
Monday July 30th, 2001 7:35:12 AM

Gragullax stirred the darkness with his thoughts as he mulled over a goblet of his most recent foes’ fluids. The number of daily battles hadn’t escalated, but some faces had joined the fray of late, adding an interesting dimension to the art of death, and bringing some new blood, as it were, to the menu. Lazily stretching a wing, he considered the advantages to be gained, and wondered at its source – time perhaps to scout the area, after causing a suitable distraction, of course.

Morning comes swiftly and the Three make their way to the portal, following the directions through the Nightmare district. Thankfully, the early hour plays to our heroes’ advantage, keeping shut many unwanted eyes as the less scrupulous recover from a night of unsavory activities. You pass through several ambush sites, all abandoned at the moment, and successfully locate the grate leading to the hidden Portal. A mouth appears on it, saying, "Speak the word."

Tericus
Monday July 30th, 2001 8:53:03 AM

adjusting his mace a bit and rubbing his holy symbol, Tericus says "Are we ready?"

Dalelad  d20+16=23
Monday July 30th, 2001 9:23:12 AM

checking again to make sure everything is in their right places, and then loads his crossbow, ready for action, Dalelad assumes the rear guard position and awaits everyone else to go.

He will start right now, watching to make sure noone is trying to sneak up on them or ambush them.

(rolled 23 for spot check)

Addinein
Monday July 30th, 2001 9:51:19 AM

Addinein will go where ever indicated, for the party marching order. "I am ready. "

Gareth
Monday July 30th, 2001 12:02:08 PM

The warrior looks to the others, adjusts his armor and gear, makes sure everyone is ready, and steps up to the portal. "I would appreciate it if you would not dally long before following me. I would also suggest we go invisible once we are there. That way we see each other come in and we minimize our exposure.".

The warrior looks back one last time at the Wold he knows so well, places his hand on the appropriate device, waits for the shimmer, and speaks the words "aniktos ke hereto se sas." - and then braces for the unknown.

Once on the other side, he goes invisible immediately.

Qualde
Monday July 30th, 2001 12:21:03 PM

After a night spent in deep meditation and prayer with Tericus, Qualde is unusually serene in the pre-dawn dark. She walks in silence at her brother's side with her hood thrown back to let in the soothing, soft light of the night.

"I have no invisible," Qualde murmurs, gripping the shaft of her morningstar. She waits her turn, then uses her free hand and her throaty voice to activate the portal and follow Gareth through.

Cantos
Monday July 30th, 2001 2:30:18 PM

Cantos draws his Longsword out and steps up to the portal. With a quick glimpse to the heavens he speaks teh words and goes through. When he enters he will cast See Invisible and Invisibility on himself

Nonam (contingency)
Monday July 30th, 2001 5:22:02 PM

Nonam listens to make sure that Gareth gets the words right. Then he makes sure that no one is doing anything stupid before stepping through with his Staff of Fire at the ready.

Onrad
Monday July 30th, 2001 11:46:05 PM

Onrad takes his traditional position at the rear of the party. He stands beside Dalelad and smiles nodding as if to say welcome to the rear.

He waits until last to go through the portal a shiver running through his body as he does so.

He remains visible for the moment, not wanting our new Drow friend to be the only visible target.

Dalelad  d20+18=20 d20+16=36
Tuesday July 31st, 2001 12:13:29 AM

Just before he enters the portal, Dalelad activates his Boots of Speed. He then goes through the portal, reciting the correct phrase, and upon reaching the other side, he tumbles to his left 20' and crouches there, swinging his loaded Crossbow from right to left looking for anything or anyone aggressive towards the group. His Spot and Listen skills are on full alert.

(Listen 20, Spot 36)

Tericus
Tuesday July 31st, 2001 6:23:34 AM

saying the words that need to be said, Tericus moves through the portal

Addinein
Tuesday July 31st, 2001 7:14:27 AM

"I have no invis either." As everyone moves through, Addinein joins the crowd of people reciting the correct phrase.

Portal (DM Dave)  d20=6 d100=87
Tuesday July 31st, 2001 8:23:15 AM

The portal revealed behind the partially excavated wall of the cellar glows upon Gareth’s utterance, filling the square opening with a shimmering liquid field. [No password required for the others to follow.] The party quickly passes through, preparing for the worst.

As you step through, the world tilts crazily [Roll Reflex (DC 17) to avoid falling] and you discover that the terminus is a pool of liquid lying on the floor of another cellar, this one far older, with a rubble-filled ceiling overhead. The air smells strongly of wood alcohol, the source apparently that of the pool that you have stumbled through. As the group recovers from the change in gravity's direction, the pool quickly evaporates, leaving a circular ring of rune-carved stones behind as a demarcation.

A bank of yellow fog billows out from around Gareth, quickly replacing the alcohol smell with nauseating sulfurous vapors throughout the room [Require Fortitude check (DC 20) to avoid effects of Stinking Cloud]. Gareth remains visible. Cantos is unable to get off any spells at the moment.

Beyond the fog, light filters down from a dust-filled entryway ahead [the group is standing in a 15’ foot wide and 25’ long room] with stairs beyond the opening leading upward. A deep vibration, running up you legs, passes through the room, followed by a great roaring from somewhere up the stairway.

Gareth  d20+6=11 d20+10=27
Tuesday July 31st, 2001 9:44:15 AM

The warrior curses softly as he loses his feet coming through the portal. He is not affected much by the gas and takes a moment to gather himself before standing up. He moves out of the gas cloud - helping anyone who needs it - as the other come through. He looks at the circle and hears the roar. "I'd say we'd better destroy this thing quick and get out. Nonam, what do we need to do to disable this portal? Magic, brute force, or both?".

[DM Note: The characters will have to leave the room to escape the effects of the gas.]

Cantos  d20=3 d20=8
Tuesday July 31st, 2001 12:36:30 PM

Cantos easily regains his footing but the stench of the stinking cloud causes his eys to blur. " CCCant breath..god what a stench" Cantos attempts to move out of the room to escape the cloud

(Fort 10 reflex 23)

Addinein  d20+8=13 d20+7=22 d20+6=26 d20+6=17
Tuesday July 31st, 2001 1:59:22 PM

As Addinein steps through the portal, he loses his footing and falls to the ground. Noting the change of the liquid to vapor, Addinein holds his breath for a quick second, as he works on getting back up on to his feet. Realing that others may be in trouble, Addinein will come to the aid of any that might have difficulty breathing, and try to escort them (somewhere?) to a safe place. As the groups moves within the confines of the new cavern, Addinein tries to intently listen and peer into his surroundings. (Reflex 13 F, Fort 22 OK, Listen 26, search 17). (ooc actions after fall are assuming there is nothing preventing me from standing up. Like someone on top of me, or combat! :) ).

Onrad  d20+7=14 d20+9=15
Tuesday July 31st, 2001 7:40:48 PM

Onrad slips in the water banging his elbow. He grimmaces in pain. Then before he can react, he gets caught in the spell.

::Cough::

::Hack!::

Onrad begins to look a bit green as he coughs. He tries to roll to escape the area, but isn't sure where that might be.

Nonam (contingency)  d20+9=29 d20+8=26
Tuesday July 31st, 2001 11:07:30 PM

Nonam gracefully steps through the portal and takes a quick look around. Noticing the toxic gas he doesn't waste any breath to answer Gareth. Instead he quickly moves toward the exit.

Once out of the room, the wizard calmly looks up the stairs to see if whatever roared is coming down.

Dalelad  d20+17=22 d20+12=32
Tuesday July 31st, 2001 11:08:43 PM

(Reflex save 22, Fortitude save Nat. 20/32)

Dalelad comes up, noticing the stench and obvious effects it's having on everyone.

I help everyone to their feet and then start moving down the hallway, looking for a way to fresh air, BUT I do go cautiously down the hallway, looking for any trap or device that might harm myself or the party.

Qualde  d20+9=21 d20+11=23 d20+5=17
Wednesday August 1st, 2001 1:08:36 AM

Qualde steps easily through the portal, reorienting and righting herself automatically (Reflex=21). She notices the stench on her first breath in time to inhale only shallowly (Fort=23). After a quick glance around the room (Spot=17), she hooks one hand under Onrad's shoulder and half-drags him out to the staircase.

Tericus  d20+6=17 d20+12=22
Wednesday August 1st, 2001 4:04:34 AM

landing gracefully on his feet(reflex 17) Tericus looks around a bit until the room fills up with gas(fort of 22) moving quickly, he exits the room, but remains near the door. "We need to get in there and destroy that circle." he whispers

Out of the Cloud (DM Dave)
Wednesday August 1st, 2001 8:38:10 AM

The group makes its way to the foot of the stairway, and Nonam, looking up, sees daylight streaming down from the timber-filled passage. There appears to be enough room for human-sized creatures to pass through safely. Nothing seems to be coming down them at the moment – although sounds of roaring and maniacal screams can be heard quiet distinctly nearby.

Looking back at the way you have come, it seems like half a minute, but is probably only 15 seconds, before the noxious fumes dissipate, leaving the way to the rune stones clear.

Addinein
Wednesday August 1st, 2001 9:08:48 AM

Speaking as quietly as he can, " I wonder whether the runes tell us anything about how to dismantel the portal. Or does someone have a dispel magic spell on them?"

Gareth
Wednesday August 1st, 2001 11:03:27 AM

The warrior stands near the stairs. "I'd say we go back and take out the portal quickly. Then get away from here. Those things might be trying to get to the portal. Nonam, you're the brains. Destroy it or tell us what to do to destroy it. I'll stand guard here.".

Cantos  d20+1=21 d20+1=13
Wednesday August 1st, 2001 3:10:43 PM

Cantos attempts to clear the effects of the stinking cloud out of his lungs and gasps quietly" I have dispell magic availalbe to me but I think ist going to take more than that" With that said he turns to look up the hallway with Dalelad preparing for unwelcome visitors

(spot 21 natural 20 and listen 13)

Nonam
Wednesday August 1st, 2001 4:36:42 PM

Nonam pulls a vial out of one of his many deep robe pockets and holds it up, "Dispel Magic potion. Not much good against something you're fighting, but a portal that's just sitting there is another story. Hopefully removing the magic of one of the rune stones will kill the whole portal. I can detect if the magic has left after I apply the potion. If it has, great. If not, there are other options such as physically destroying the runes."
The wizard takes a deep breath in case the fumes come back and heads back into the room. He uncorks his potion then carefully pours it onto one of the rune stones.

Dalelad
Wednesday August 1st, 2001 7:00:32 PM

While everyone contemplates how to dismantle the Portal, I will stand gaurd at the stairs, crossbow at the ready, waiting.

Qualde
Thursday August 2nd, 2001 2:57:55 AM

"Sunlight." The single word drips with disgust as Qualde pulls up her hood to shield her sensitive eyes. She waits with Dalelad at the base of the stairs, ready to move out when the mage finishes with his self-appointed task.

Rune Ruination (DM Dave)
Thursday August 2nd, 2001 8:18:28 AM

Nonam heads over to the ring of stones. His magically-enhanced senses fail to detect any magical emanations from the runes. Unstopping the potion bottle, he realizes that he is failing to get a magical reading from the liquid, as well. However, it is apparently having an effect, as the stone he pours it on cracks and crumbles upon contact.

Meanwhile, scouting ahead, it is determined that the stairs are safe (no traps). The sounds of the roaring continue, but do not appear to be coming nearer. In fact, the roaring is getting less frequent.

In the dim light of the room, you catch sight of a cluster of tiny, winking lights (differing colors) that suddenly appear. They seem to sparkle, shimmer, and move slightly, as if they can see you. It may be a trick of your vision, but you think you can almost make out the features of a face in the pattern, with two red pinpoints for eyes.

Nonam (Contingency)  d4+1=4
Thursday August 2nd, 2001 9:29:01 AM

Nonam hurries out of the room after the stone cracks. Once back in the hall he pulls out his Wand of Bull's Strength. First, he checks to see if he can detect the magic in it.
Then he points it at Gareth and says, "Smile, big guy."
After using the wand, he glances back into the room, "I can give anybody else that wants it Bull's Strength, but we need to get away from this room first."

Gareth (Bull's Strength +4 - maybe)
Thursday August 2nd, 2001 10:47:43 AM

The warrior eyes the face. He says "Let's move on...". He waits for the others to filter up the stairs before he goes. He watches the face carefully, making sure to project a pleasant disposition. He nods in acknowledgement of it but takes no other action.

Cantos  d20+1=20 d20+1=5

Retreat into the Past (DM Dave)  d100=63 d20+6=19
Friday August 3rd, 2001 9:14:53 AM

Scanning his wand, Nonam fails to detect magic, and looking over the rest of the party, realizes he is not picking up any magical emanations from any equipment. However, upon calling forth the power of the Bull, Gareth feels a definite increase in his potency as the weight of his equipment becomes even easier to lug around.

The group quickly heads up the stairs without incident, leaving the sparkling lights behind in the dry cellar. After a few short steps, everyone is awed by the sight of the ruins before them: The first noticeable detail is the silver-hued atmosphere that permeates the city. Next, the eyes are drawn to the beauty of the place, with cracked spires still soaring smoothly into the air, and empty windows framing many a tree growing within the various buildings. And the shear size of the place is staggering, with most of the view cut off by the many piles of rubble strewn about, although tall buildings in the distance may be seen.

Unfortunately, your reverie is cut short by the source of the sounds heard earlier. Directly ahead, a little over a hundred yards way, a massive battle is occurring. A huge dragon with bluish silver scales is on the loosing end of a fight with creatures out of your worst nightmares. You quickly count six humanoid types, lead by a seventh, that are concertedly hacking away at the dragon. Many bodies lie strewn about. You don’t have time for a detailed review of the features, but each of the humanoid-types wield saw-toothed swords in clawed hands, stand over six feet tall, with pointed ears and snaky, disgusting beards the most prominent features. The leader of the assault stands over twelve feet tall, wreathed in flames, with huge red wings flapping around as if a cloak. He (It?) is currently grappling with the dragon.

Around the fringes of the battle, crouching near various buildings, await on-looking creatures of all shapes and sizes, none of which appear aligned with those in the current battle. Some of these monstrosities you’ve heard of in legend, others are entirely alien to your thinking. There must be a dozen such things hanging about – some of the more recognizable types are huge beetles (unknown variety), troll-like beings, and a few foul winged creatures with female torsos and heads perched nearby.

Tericus
Friday August 3rd, 2001 9:28:07 AM

"Should we help? That dragon could provide us information that we need." Tericus says

Nonam (Contingency)  d4+1=3
Friday August 3rd, 2001 11:16:00 AM

Nonam absentmindedly zaps Cantos with his strength boosting wand on the way up the stairs.
Once up top, he looks at Tericus like the priest might be going mad, "Do you really want to fight a group of things that are killing a dragon? I think this is one of those situations we had best avoid. Gareth, do you wish to lead the way?"

(+3 to str, 5 hours)

Addinein
Friday August 3rd, 2001 11:16:55 AM

Looking about the area, Addinein makes the assumption that this must be some sort of challenge. Looking at the bodies on the ground, Addinein tries to guess whether the bodies were for or agains the dragon. He tries to get a quick estimate of the number of bodies on the ground. " There seems to be a lot of onlookers. It is hard to tell who is for whom. We have been told that not everything is as they seem." Addinein pointedly looks at Cantos after that last comment.

Gareth
Friday August 3rd, 2001 3:57:38 PM

The warrior looks at the creatures. "Lead where, Nonam? Perhaps if we could save the dragon we could get a little help? Perhaps we can move into the group of creatures and see if we can overhear something useful? Suggestions?".

Dalelad  d20+16=32
Friday August 3rd, 2001 4:48:13 PM

Immediately steps back into the shadows, trying not to be seen by the other onlookers.

"We should immediately move away from the area. That dragon should be left to his own fate. We ain't got time to do a lengthy fight, we need to find our way out now."

Watches for anything sneaking up on the party, or looking at the party hungrily.

(spot 32)

Cantos  d20+1=20
Friday August 3rd, 2001 8:31:38 PM

Cantos bites of a retort to Addinien, "This is not the time, drow... question not my honor nor integrity." With that Cantos looks towards the fight. "I think that here discretion is the better part of valor." With that said Cantos moves away from the drow shaking his head and mutering to himself. He then moves as far into the shadows as he can and waits to see what the party does.

(spot 20)

Qualde  d20+7=17
Monday August 6th, 2001 2:33:34 AM

Qualde lifts two fingers slightly to get Nonam's attention, nods toward the mage's wand, and points a thumb at herself. Taken a bit aback by the suggestion of helping a blue dragon, the priestess shakes her head. She keeps her voice low. "We want New Elennians, temple artifacts, and portals -- not dragon fights. These carrion eaters feast soon -- not talk. We move on, seek guides from smaller groups?" She gestures in the general direction of away from the combat.

Stepping closer to Addinein, Qualde growls out, "Don't taunt the elf, brother. We need everyone focussed on task right now." While talking, she keeps an eye out for more scavengers heading toward the inevitable carnage. (Spot=17)

Quiet Conference (DM Dave)  d100=5 d100=88
Monday August 6th, 2001 7:20:03 AM

When Nonam directs his wand on Cantos, they immediately find each other in reversed positions (Nonam standing on the stair where Cantos was standing and vice versa). Also, their clothing seems to not be fitting so well. Looking down, they realize that the other is now wearing all his outfit and equipment!

Addinein's assessment of the battle is that all the bodies are the same as those who are attacking the dragon. Perhaps four or six are scattered around the ground.

Dalelad notes that none of the onlookers have spotted the Three at this time.

Onrad looks visibly upset as he spies the battle taking place. "That's a silver that they're attacking," he says under his breath.

Tericus
Monday August 6th, 2001 9:25:27 AM

"Lets move then." Tericus says "Though in a place like this, a silver dragon as an ally would sure be helpful." then, as an afterthought, he says, "What happened to your cloths?"

Addinein
Monday August 6th, 2001 11:15:52 AM

whispering, "The dragon is losing, can we provide that much aide? Let's move" When the party chooses a direction, Addinein will follow. When his sister steps closer and comments, Addinein reponds in a whisper, "It wasn't meant as a taunt. I was merely stating that first impressions can be wrong."

Nonam
Monday August 6th, 2001 1:06:24 PM

The wizard gets into the shadows and starts cursing under his breath, "Let's find a safe place for a moment and change clothes quick. I need that robe, and I imagine you want this... whatever it is."

Nonam starts looking for a suitable place to change.

Onrad (DM Dave)
Monday August 6th, 2001 6:10:26 PM

Glancing over at the antics with Cantos and Nonam, Onrad wonders briefly if the mage has got his hands on a wand of cross-dressing. He looks over at Qualde and thinks briefly about Nonam wearing her small clothes...but quickly discards the vision that arises. Best not to go there.

"Well, one things for sure: We won't be calling ourselves the Silver Dragons if we don't help this one. Without a distraction to draw the crowd away, I don't see how we can get in there and be of much use. Gareth?"

Dalelad  d20+16=33 d20+18=19 d20+18=23

Looks for a round a bout way away from this place where the least amount of onlookers will have the chance to witness, then motions everyone to follow him, When they start to move, Dalelad starts scouting, keeping his crossbow at the ready. Listening for anything or anyone that might cross their paths.

Qualde
Tuesday August 7th, 2001 12:48:02 AM

"Silver?" Qualde takes another peak at the battle, then kicks at a fallen hunk of crumbled masonry. "Cursed surface light, and first impressions. Still say, go, but --" For the first time, uncertainty shows on the drow's dark features. "-- but to distract crowd, maybe convince that large, fresh carcass is near? Or that we find dragon's hoard. We have illusion magics?"

Cantos  d20+1=2 d20+1=16
Tuesday August 7th, 2001 2:34:05 AM

Nonam and Cantos hurriedly change clothes (and Nonam gets his wand back) while the others keep tabs on the surroundings. Meanwhile, Dalelad spots what he thinks is a safe way to the right that the group can go and avoid unfriendly eyes.

The dragon is not looking so good, although it's managed to dispatch another two of the enemy. The greatest of its opponents still wrestles with its neck, raising horrific wounds among sundered scales.

The onlooking monsters seem to get excited about something occuring to the left of the battle, behind a pile of rubble. After a second, you see a giant (15' tall), dressed in leather armor with a cloak swirling about, come from that direction and join the fray, with a huge sword swinging. Caught off balance in mid-stride, his first blow goes wide, crashing into one of the street-pillars lining the ancient roadway on which the battle is occuring (avoids breaking weapon and losses additional attack). He follows up with two more swings, connecting with both, cleanly cutting one of the bearded creatures in half, ending his stroke with the blade biting into a nearby enemy.

The surrounding monsters, being joined by more critters all the time, raise their voices in hungry anticipation as they await the outcome.

Gareth
Tuesday August 7th, 2001 10:05:54 AM

The warrior frowns at thier situation as he conceals himself from prying eyes. He whispers in frustration. "This is difficult. Yes we may be in trouble if we help but to leave a silver to die... We must find a way to help even if it is only indirectly. That new giant may only be finishing off the dragon's opponenets so it can kill the dragon itself. Mages, any spells you could use without revealing our position? Could we heal it from a distance? Anything other than a direct attack?".

Nonam sourly complains "I can do nothing for the dragon from here. I could take out one of those things fighting it from here and probably not reveal our presence, but judging by the way my wand's working, I may end up riding the dragon after I cast. In any case, standing around here is stupid. We must get out now or help now."
While Nonam rants he tries to make out what type of giant that is. (knowledge,nature=19 (or arcana=16) He also zaps Qualde with the wand and hopes the side effects will stop up on the street (+4 str).

Onrad (DM Dave)
Tuesday August 7th, 2001 12:02:54 PM

"Beritram and Morham warned us that magic was going to be difficult in this place...I don't think we can count on it much if we go into battle." To Qualde, he says, "So long as it isn't my fresh carcass you propose using to cause a distraction, it looks like it might pull off some of the hungrier ones out there. I agree with Nonam: We've got to do something now, while we have the initiative." With that, Onrad does a couple of quick stretches to limber up.

Addinein  d4+1=2
Tuesday August 7th, 2001 1:33:19 PM

Addinein eyes the activity going on around him. Both in the battle, and for what his party members are doing. "Can anyone talk to the Dragon telepathically, to see if there is any other way we may help it?"

Addinein will begin to check his gear, and to limber up, anticipating a coming battle, or quick retreat. If there is enough noise to cover his casting, he pulls out a scroll and casts cat's grace on himself (+2).

Cantos
Tuesday August 7th, 2001 1:48:23 PM

Cantos slides his dagger back into his boot, "whatever we do we must do quickly, If we go into combat try and stay in range of my voice my songs are more than just nice to listen to perchance I can even inspire you" Cantos then casts Mage Armor on himself and draws his Longbow "my first 3 shots will be will be with this after that we will see" Cantos then awaits to see what happens first.

Addinein feels a definite increase in his reflexes upon casting from the scroll, which is good, as something strange happens when Nonam uses the wand: A smoky black vapor briefly rises about Qualde, then quickly solidifies into three groping rubbery black tentacles - one each grasping for Qualde, Addinein, and Tericus. The one attacking Addinein misses, but the other two successfully grapple (Causing a single point of damage and holding Qualde and Tericus fast).

Nothing untoward happens as Cantos casts his spell - it's likely that the invisible armor was successfully conjured.

Despite the distraction, Nonam is able to gauge the Giant involved in the fight, but doesn't recognize it - tall as a frost giant, but lacking the milky-white skin that marks that race. This one has a tan skin-tone, with black hair. Whatever he is, he's definitely skilled with that sword!

Nonam frowns at the tentacles and finally puts the wand away, "Sorry about that. I'll get them loose. The rest of you help that flea-bitten dragon."

Taking care to remain out of the groping tentacle's reach, the wizard casts magic missile. Two bolts strike the tentacle holding Qualde (8pts). Two hit the one on Tericus (9pts), and one strikes the groping tentacle (5pts).

Cantos muters to himself again and starts singing( after 1 round everybody in teh group gets +2 save vs charm and fear and +1 attack and damage) and then draws his bow back preparing to release his first arrow at which ever creature Qualde attacks( the next 2 will be fired at the same on if it doesnt drop or if it does at the next nearest one)Hitting armor classes 23, 22, 29 for 5, 10, and 9 points of damage.

The warrior frowns as Qualde decides to put the whole group at risk by her actions. Seeing her held fast he says evenly to her "Qualde, I am glad to have you here with us, but you must restrain yourself and wait for the group to act. Since it looks like the giant is helping the dragon I'd say we should either attack the bearded things or wait for the giant to do the job and see if he is planning on attacking the dragon next - or freeing it. And then deciding a course of action. If anyone has a healing arrow maybe now would be a good time to use it on the dragon to help it survive the ". The warrior tries to determine if the giant is an ally or foe of the dragon. He also tries to guage how much longer the dragon can hold out before expiring.

Excuse me folks, was our job to come here and destroy that portal, then find our way back, with the knowledge that there are some really bad creatures here? or is it to save everything we see, knowing it could cause us all our lives? My thoughts is, lets get the hell out of here now, while noone is watching and place alot of distance from here before all the scavengers start showing up.

Nonam successful destroys the three tentacles as the group struggles with the situation. With a groan, the dragon collapses onto the ancient streets, and a roar goes up from the onlookers, who edge closer.

Deftly parrying the strokes from the wicked blades of the bearded men, the giant manages to cut down two more of them, as the great flaming individual climbs off of the dragon's still form and makes his way to face the giant.

Cantos finishes using his scroll, and feels a definite increase in his health.

The drow shrugs off the last of the rubbery flesh, nodding her thanks to Nonam. Her eyes glow red, and her low voice is harsh with anger. "Gareth, that dragon didn't have time for eight relative strangers to reach consensus." Qualde doesn't seem to care whether her undercommon is understood by all. "When each stands around waiting for the other to make a decision, don't berate the person who takes action. I won't waste time with debate when your life is in danger."

Adjusting her hood slightly, Qualde keeps a lookout for anything attracted by the singing and glowing missiles, while she waits for somebody else to make a decision. (Spot=24)

Nonam knows Gareth didn't understand Qualde, but he doesn't bother to translate as he replies testily, "I was about to fry those bearded things for the exact reasons Qualde said. If I hadn't needed to get rid of tentacles, there would have been lightning blasting everything around here. On the other hand, I entirely agree with Daledad. That was not a fight we needed. In any case, the key to survival around here is quick decisions and the group acting together. Not conferences out in the shadows. Gareth, you're the leader. So lead. We'll do what you say. Whatever we do, we need to move."

He turns toward the way that looks clear, says "Let's go." and he begins to walk in that shadowed area - not really knowing what else to do. as he goes he says quietly "I suppose we walk until we see something promising. A Day of Recon (DM Dave)
Friday August 10th, 2001 5:00:57 AM

Aided by the noise and distraction of battle, the heroes manage to slip off without becoming embroiled in the situation. Soon, the piles of rubble that were once buildings put everything out of sight, if not mind, as various screeches and howls continue to be heard for some minutes.

The rest of the day is spent in just getting a feel for the layout of Myth Drannor - not a huge city compared to the Big Float, but massive none-the-less. Roughly, the city is divided in half by a huge line of destroyed buildings running north and south. To the east side of this destruction lies the apparently 'newer' section of the city, filled more with parks and open areas. To the west is what appears to be the downtown section. Most of the more intact buildings lie in this area. Besides shops and homesteads, there are numerous larger structures that obviously served as castles, centers of learning, and temples. Most of these seem to be occupied by various strange creatures that have claimed them for their own.

None of these monsters are humanoid enough to recognize. As evening settles over the ruins, the tired group faces the prospect of spending the night.

The haunting beauty of the silent ruins begins to glow with a soft, blue-white radiance, with witch-fire playing around turrets, peaks, and pinnacles, as the moon rises over the cityscape.

[This place is massive enough that a book of description wouldn't be enough to do it justice. Please indicate anything in particular you wish to know about the city or its contents, so I can provide specific information.]

Nonam (contingency)
Friday August 10th, 2001 9:06:59 AM

Outraged at having wasted the whole day despite having specific instructions to hurry, Nonam stops and launches a tirade, "I would have asked a beholder for directions before I faced the prospect of hving to spend the night here, but it seems I wasn't given a choice about that. Just because I didn't want to get involved in that huge dragon fight didn't mean I wanted to creep about like a mouse all day!" Nonam glares at Gareth since he's the leader and no doubt responsible, "We were told they were in a temple. So, let's start looking into temples. Someone pop invisible and go look in that one over there."
His tone becomes more calm as he finally answers Gareth, "Now then Gareth, as to your ring, I've been thinking about it these past few hours, and if you recall the discussion about Mythals and the way magic here works. The way I understand it, everything here is laid out in zones. Many zones magic should function normally. In others it won't function at all. In still others it might have bizarre effects. At vaious points it might effect only certain types of items or only cast spells. I had thought to use my enhanced vision during the day to check these things out, but it seems I didn't ever find the opportunity."

Gareth
Friday August 10th, 2001 11:01:00 AM

The warrior shrugs at Nonam's words. "Well my friend, up until now I don't think anyone saw anything remotely looking like a temple of the cult gods. Everything looked like it had a big monster in it. I don't think we missed it. I do think it would be better to keep moving. These guys might not be operating during the day anyway. What say we keep going and rely on potions and magic for our rest?".

Cantos
Friday August 10th, 2001 11:57:19 AM

Cantos smiles wearily, " if we do rest remember what both Morham and Jandar told us do so away from the city and if we can help it do not rest at all until we are away from here" That said Cantos picks up his head and looks into the night, "we have completed the first step of our mission we must now look for whatever temple these cultists are in and search for new elenians here whatever we do we need to do quickly" Cantos then shudders and the memory of seeing his first silver dragon slain.

Addinein
Monday August 13th, 2001 12:09:03 AM

"We do not know the terrain at all. I would think that we should keep moving as much as possible, in order to scout out the local area. We should go as long as possible, in order to identify possible bolt holes, should we need a place of safety. Are there any here that a limited without torches?"

Onrad
Monday August 13th, 2001 12:15:58 AM

Onrad grins and jabs at Nonam, "You seem as sour as ever, my friend. If I might offer a suggestion... If I were a worshipper of a cult god from Plateau City and I took a portal into Myth Drannor, I would hope that the temple was close to the portal so that I didn't have to brave danger dragon fights to get to church. Perhaps we've wandered too far afield and should look more at portals nearer where we entered. We did use the same portal, right? Can't say that I was really paying much attention."

Shades of Evening (DM Dave)
Monday August 13th, 2001 8:55:49 AM

Although the sun has set, the sky still glows somewhat from its hidden light.

Further details of the day's scouting trip:

Nonam's special vision seems inoperative...for instance, no signs of magic were detected throughout today, regardless of location or object viewed.

Due south of your original entry point lies a great lake, created from an ancient man-made dam. To the west of the huge rubble field from which you emerged was a dark, massive many-spired citadel, appearing elvish in style. Many winged demon-looking types appear to hold sway here.

To the south of the citadel was a smaller domed building, and further south was a massive, triangular shaped building of dwarven make. To the west of this hall, beyond many mostly-intact balconied apartments and four floor homes was another sprawling building consisting of four wings linking turrets to a central core.

Northeast of the citadel, on the edge of the city, stands a fortress with a large tower at its south end, a huge central block and a long wing extending due north. – this appeared to be one of the many temple-like structures you spotted throughout the day.

Between the Citadel and the huge rubble field, near the battle with the silver dragon, stands a small, square keep, of stout, olden design: One of the few buildings in the city to have crenellations, arrow-slits, and a portcullis.

Far northwest of the Citadel, up a major thoroughfare and beyond a smaller band of rubble, a still-splendid building rises, its empty windows staring out into the streets. This obviously is yet another of the many temples. Behind it runs another major street that wraps around the north end of the city and continues down its western side. Two large buildings are found along its way. The eastern most of these two is a large, squat tower. The other is another obvious temple, looking out of the greenlands surrounding the city to a burial ground in the distance.

Several arched bridges, spanning the stream that issues from the dammed lake, cross over to the eastern, more park-like, half of the city. In this area, the most prominent of the hundreds of buildings are a set of four towers, separated by the rubble of at least two other towers. Northeast of this area, separated by another major band of destruction, is a large building with its entire eastern face torn off. Some sort of museum, perhaps?

Many, many more buildings are noted, these being the largest structures.

Hundreds of collapsed, overgrown buildings, most without roofs, are available as bolt-holes – hopefully few of them currently occupied.

From a stand of black oaks nearby, a man garbed as a ranger, with swirling cloak, emerges and strides purposely toward you. His most prominent feature is a white birthmark around his left eye. A greatsword is strapped to his back, and his black hair flows behind him as he approaches you on the sound of winds, “Greetings. Might I suggest we retire to that building over there, away from prying eyes?” He indicates one of the tumbled stone houses behind you.

Greetings (DM Dave)
Tuesday August 14th, 2001 6:43:59 AM

The group heads into one of the numerous buildings off the main road. Making their way through the collapsed living area, the heroes manage to find a fairly intact room with a ceiling (although the sky peeks through in places).

The newcomer turns to the group, “You won’t need a fire for warmth tonight – the Mythal takes care of the weather, and never allows it to get below freezing. Fire will only draw battle. Well, it seems you have me at a disadvantage, Tericus of the Windborne Hills. The place I am from no longer exists, sadly, although our parents are beyond the both of us, so there is that much in common at least.”

Turning to the leader of the group, he continues, “Well meet Gareth Ahrimon’s son! It seems you and your friends are in the thick of it! Advice freely given is rarely without consequence, but here is some: Beware of the low places -- There are things here more terrifying than the devils and demons that roam the streets. Even I would not deign to battle such monstrosities, unless it were at the call of my followers.”

“Ah, your thoughts shout ‘A name, give us a name,’” says he turning to Nonam. “Strange request from one titled as having no name. There is power in a name, tied so closely as to draw your thoughts if it is spoken from afar – not a wise thing to share, but wisdom grows wearisome in the silence. I am Ciaran Darragh (pronounced KEY-ar-awn DA-ra).” He says with a slight bow of his head.

Across the room, a familiar glow of starry lights pops up, faintly regarding the group with a pair of red dots.

The warrior nods politely to the ranger. "Nobody comes here by chance - and lives long. I would appreciate it if you would enlighten us as to where you're from and why you have decided to speak with us. And since you know who we are I'm assuming you know why we're here. Perhaps you could speak to that as well.".

The warrior looks over the man to determine if he wears symbols affiliated with any gods he knows.

Conversations with Ciaran (DM Dave)  d20=10 d20=9 d20=2
Wednesday August 15th, 2001 8:19:11 AM

Gazing evenly at the twinkling lights, Ciaran replies distantly to Nonam, “That is your destiny.” His focus returns as he addresses Gareth, “Where I’m from would have no meaning, I’m afraid. Where I’m going: Now that is something worth knowing.” He adds with a smile.

“As to why we are speaking, that is easy enough – those of good heart are few and far between, as you saw earlier today. I weep at Xualethox’ death, but I had warned her that to go so boldly about was to invite sorry.” Unbidden, an image flashes in all of your minds of the battle seen earlier of the silver dragon. Strangely, though, the perspective is different from the way you viewed it, close up and from a greater height. You see a huge sword swinging into the terrible visage of the winged, flame-encircled creature that moments before had downed the dragon.

The vision clears, and Ciaran sighs, “Once I reached her, it was beyond me to bring her back without revealing myself. I am here to warn you of the same. Yes, friend Gareth, I know of your reason for being here, and whole-heartedly wish you success. As to how much I help I can provide, that is up to you.”

Ciaran leans back against a rock, stretching out his legs, and continues, “What do you know of those who have come before you, these Woldians? They have come seeking their god, which to your fortune, you have not. Otherwise, you might have found what you looked for, and been ensnared as they have. The Mythal has not ‘re-awakened’ – only one of its many properties has been called upon that has not been seen for an Age.”

Noting Gareth’s searching gaze, the ranger laughs, “I will reveal the answer to your unspoken question if you answer me this: “Whom do the gods worship?””

To Qualde, Ciaran appears without deceit, although there is something about the man that makes him seem more than he is. Looking down, she realizes that, even leaning back, neither seat nor feet touch the ground.

Onrad easily situates himself in a strategic position to the right rear of Ciaran.

Addinein locates another way to bolt out of this room, should the need arise.

At Tericus’ query, Ciaran replies, “Those who follow must be brave and noble, valiant in battle, but crafty and wise. Aid to the road-weary and overwhelmed I provide, and require veneration in return.”

Looking over his shoulder at Onrad, Ciaran says, “The day a monkey is destined to die, all trees become slippery.”

Gareth
Wednesday August 15th, 2001 9:08:27 AM

Full of questions, the warrior begins to respond to the ranger. "So it was you who dispatched the creatures that were attacking the dragon. You say you are a guardian of sorts. Are you saying you are a god or some high level servant of a god? As far as help goes, we'd be glad to know anything you can tell us about the Woldians who have come here. Things like where are they, what are they doing, why are they doing it, and the like would be greatly appreciated. My answer to your question is 'I don't know'.".

Looking over at the red eyes, the warrior keeps going "So how come we can see our destiny and what should we do about it?".

And with great concern, he adds one last question, "I must know, could we have saved her if we'd acted? The dragon I mean."

The dark priestess cocks her head and answers one of Ciaran's questions. "We know, New Elennians come searching artifacts of old gods, cult gods. What property of Mythal traps these seekers? How caught?"

In undercommon, she remarks, "Destiny surrounds us in all directions, brother. Our choices continually redefine the path we follow through our possible fates."

Ciaran at Length (DM Dave)
Thursday August 16th, 2001 9:21:29 AM

The twinkling stars disappear, leaving the room surprisingly dimmer. Somewhere out in the ruins, a screech is cut short in a wet gurgle.

Ciaran produces a black oak staff, although there is some dispute as to which hand drew it forth and from which side he brought it. Touching the floor with its tip, he rapidly begins sketching a map, leaving dark lines on the ancient stone flooring, “We are here, next to where the Flaming Goblet once stood. Out in front is the Street of the Evening Star, although you won’t be able to see it through the rubble, except to the east past Tilver’s Dam, and to the west beyond where the Wyvern Watch Inn once stood, as it crosses Shandol Street. That way is about 800 feet from here. Go to that intersection and, staying on the Star, head past Castle Cormanthor, a big structure on your right. The road dead-ends at my temple, which lies on Sunblade Street. You’ll have travelled another 1200 feet or so, or 600 feet past Cormanthor. Turn left onto Sunblade and head down about 700 feet, until you reach the second street on your right, Scatterhorn Street. Just past that intersection, on the right side, is the Gorgontyr, an old dining and dancing hall. There you will find those you call witches.”

Proffering the staff to Gareth, Ciaran addresses the warrior, “It matters not when you go, day or night. All times are equally evil in this accursed city. I should have left when the invaders finally fell upon it, but could not abandon my followers so easily. I am bound by the law of the Mighty, preventing me from entering the temple of another, even that of a god drawn forth by these witches. This same law prevents me from rendering more than I provide you now, as long as you do not include me among those you venerate. I gift to you this staff, but it is not needed to call upon me. Say my name and I will arrive, so long as it is not in Gorgontyr. But do not call if you do not intend to take me as your own.”

“When you have finally finished with the witches, one task remains, and that is to find your exit. The Lady of the twinkling lights must be found and rescued if you are to find the correct portal among the thousand scattered throughout this city. Her situation is dire, and I would help her myself, but this task has been apportioned to you.”

“When you have finished with the nightmare in Gorgontyr, meet me in my temple, and I will give directions on finding the Lady.”

On Gareth’s question regarding the Dragon, Ciaran states, “Freed her by your intervention, perhaps, but saved is another matter. Perhaps she would have flown away, once the enemy was distracted, or she may have returned to help you – for many of you would have died. Ultimately, Xualethox would have to save herself.”

Cantos recalls nothing of Ciaran, and if what he says is true, then this is understandable, as Myth Drannor is centuries old, the place of another Age in the Wold.

Ciaran, hearing the dark elf’s voice, replies to Qualde in her native tongue, although he also seems to be speaking in Common at the same time, so that all can understand, “You speak with wisdom – we do truly shape our destiny. Now as to the Mythal – I will say this and remain silent, as to do more is not allowed: I was here when Myth Drannor was but an elven village. I was here when the Mythal was laid. I know of its secrets, and how to manipulate it to allow things not normally allowed. I could teach you to do the same, to an extent, but that is not a gift freely given. And beware: I am not the only who knows how to manipulate the Mythal – most who have lived and survived for any length of time have also gained this power.

“Your peril is great without such knowledge, as magic will only work half the time, and half of that half, it will be so weakened as to be unreliable. The Mythal is a living force, placed here to provide great protection and benefit for its people. It was created by magics that mortals are no longer allowed to wield, for good reason. In fact, something of the immortal was placed within it, and it is for this reason that I dare not fully exert my powers. What you see is but a shell of myself, the limits of what I may do without becoming myself trapped by the Mythal.

“The Mythal can do many things, one of which is draw upon the greatest desires of the mightiest, and bring substance to them. One or two witches, even highly skilled, could not call upon such a thing, but there are more than two witches here! You must face the thing that they have brought forth and cast it down – destroying the witches will not remove it, although it may be diminished."

Ciaran rises from his resting position and paces to the doorway, “Speak quickly."

I would know more of you, Ciaran, but now is clearly not the time. We will take care of the witches and this thing they have summoned. Thursday August 16th, 2001 3:57:45 PM

Qualde's green eyes twinkle a bit as she responds in her own tongue. "Our thanks, Ciaran Darragh, for giving us what you were able. May all your choices be bold." She bows to him as she would to a respected person of greater rank, belonging to a rival House of lower rank.

Turning to the others, she gestures to the front of the ruin, and westward. "We go? Or talk first?"

Cantos  d20+12=18
Thursday August 16th, 2001 8:21:37 PM

Cantos bows fluidly to Ciaran and turns to the others," If we must talk lets do it quickly and then be off." With that he adjusts his pack and sword and looks to the door. He then sifts through his memory for any recollection of Gorgonolth and the Lady of twinkling lights.

Dalelad (DM Dave)
Thursday August 16th, 2001 8:38:21 PM

The subdued halfling, silent until this point, speaks up in hushed tones, "Sir, I truly believe you. You speak of a price to be paid for knowledge about this Mythal, saying its knowledge is not freely given. What is that price?"

Something within the thief's heart stirs at the thought of Ciaran's departure.

Addinein
Thursday August 16th, 2001 11:39:25 PM

Addinein is content to let the others do the speaking for the group. His thoughts wander as he has no specific ideas or directions. Having not been in the presence of anything unusual, he is unsure what to say or do. With his Grandmother, he was at least coached by the entire house, prior to entering her presence. But this is something new.

Listening to the conversations around him, his only concern is to whether there is any danger in the immediate vicinity.

Prepare for Departure (DM Dave)
Friday August 17th, 2001 8:26:30 AM

Ciaran returns with a bow of his own, "The respect is mutual, and my thanks for facing this evil." Responding to Gareth's questions, he says, "The staff will mitigate somewhat the direst magics used against you. There are thirteen witches, although how many are at Gorgantyr changes as they scour the ruins constantly. Of what is worshipped, it will take great might to overcome, and I warn: ‘Do not let it touch you.’"

Cantos, thinking back, is unsure of legends regarding the Lady of twinkling lights, but has heard of Gorgontyr -- a place of renown among bards for hosting only the finest of performers.

Replying to Dalelad, the ranger states, "I could teach magic to those in your group who work with the arcane, and impart the power to those wielding holy magic, allowing them to have control of their magic in this place, but only if they take my name as one of their liege lords. It is not something to be done lightly or under duress, and some of the other Mighty demand sole obedience to the exclusion of others."

Addressing the group, Ciaran concludes, "Your sense of urgency is appreciated. I will go and provide a distraction to draw off unwanted encounters along your way to Gorgontyr."

Ciaran waits at the door for your response.

Gareth
Friday August 17th, 2001 9:19:46 AM

The warrior bows one last time and says, "We will make our way to Gorgantyr and destroy the witches we find there and whatever 'thing' they have summoned. We were actually instructed to bring them back to Plateau City with us, but there was no stipulation about them being dead or alive. If they are evil as you say - and I have no reason to doubt they are - then I see no reason to bring living evil back to our land. Farewell for now good friend. We greatly appreciate your help." He waits for the others to prepare and hands the staff to Nonam. "I'm sure I am not qualified to wield this. I'll let you decide what to do with it."

Tericus

"Lets get going then. We're not getting paid by the hour, if we were getting paid." Tericus says with a bit of a smile

Nonam
Friday August 17th, 2001 9:52:33 AM

Eager for further magical knowledge, Nonam asks, "As I've said, you have earned my respect. You have rendered aid when none of the other Mighty have even approached us. I am interested in knowing more about your service, but as you've said such is not a thing for a snap decision. What compact do you require of those that take you as Lord? Would doing so bind me to Myth Drannor or are you also known within the Wold?"

Cantos
Saturday August 18th, 2001 3:44:42 PM

Cantos bows fluidly to Ciaran, "We thank you for your aid and information sir," and he turns to the others. "Gorgantyr was renowned for taking in only the finest bards in days long past. This could be very tricky indeed."

Qualde
Monday August 20th, 2001 1:37:13 AM

Qualde watches the interaction between Nonam and Ciaran, a fathomless expression in her green eyes. She heads westward with the group, sticking close to Addinein's side.

Ciaran Oath (DM Dave)
Monday August 20th, 2001 7:35:57 AM

A look of surprise, replaced by one of relief, quickly crosses Ciaran’s face at Nonam’s words, “No written compact is required. For a time I walked the Wold, but my name is now unknown except to the a few sages and the new gods. You would not be bound to Myth Drannor by calling upon my name, but here are the words if you do choose to make an oath of fealty: “I swear friendship with Ciaran Darragh, what is his I protect, and what is mine he protects. And I swear homage to Tiarnan Ciaran Darragh, accepting his lordship, promising to let others know of his friendship and willingness to render aid to all that call upon him. Let all who bear witness to this testament travel joyfully on all the long paths.”

Dalelad immediately speaks up and says, "I wish to take this oath." The halfling repeats Ciaran's words.

As Dalelad finishes, the white birthmark around Ciaran's eye glows briefly, and Dalelad says, "Oh!"

Turning to the rest of the group (including those headed for the door) Dalelad says, "Hey guys, I can us teleport directly to this Gorgontyr place, instead of having to walk there, if you want to."

Turning to Nonam, Dalelad continues, "And Ciaran also showed me this neat trick, where I can recharge magic items. But I don't have any that need recharging...you have any you want recharged?"

Apparently overwhelmed, Dalelad gushes, "Wow, there is just so much to this place, did you guys know about the blueglow moss...we've gotta' find some!" The halfling can barely contain himself from rushing around, looking at various stones. He is babbling on about a lot of stuff that starts running together in the confusion.

Gareth
Monday August 20th, 2001 10:45:26 AM

The warrior considers the being's words. "And you do not require we not protect swear allegiance to others? I have many questions Tiarnan Ciaran Darragh, too many for now. I will consider your leadership for myself after our current objective is completed. I thank you again for your help. One other question about the mission: Having been subjected to it once I would like to know how well do the witches use their magic here? Can they control it with the help of their 'lord'?" He turns to Dalelad and says, "Why yes, my good halfling, I'd say a teleport would be a good thing after you've charged up any items that have need of it. That is, if Nonam can stomach it..."

Addinein
Monday August 20th, 2001 5:42:45 PM

Watching the halfling perk up, Addinein has troubles containing some of his mirth.

"From what we've been told about this place, the teleporting would be a good thing for us. Provided it does not backfire."

Nonam
Monday August 20th, 2001 6:24:33 PM

Hearing Daledad's new found knowledge, Nonam can barely contain himself. As calmly as he can, he repeats the words, "I swear friendship with Ciaran Darragh, what is his I protect, and what is mine he protects. And I swear homage to Tiarnan Ciaran Darragh, accepting his lordship, promising to let others know of his friendship and willingness to render aid to all that call upon him. Let all who bear witness to this testament travel joyfully on all the long paths."

Onrad
Monday August 20th, 2001 6:29:45 PM

Onrad gapes at Nonam and Daledad and mutters warily, "I'm not sure you two thought about what you were doing."

[To help speed up game play...]

Upon Nonam's utterance, Ciaran glows once again, and knowledge alights upon the mage. Interspersed with the secrets of hidden power are images of the city in its former glory, along with an intimate familiarity of people and places within Myth Drannor during the height of its power.

Cantos
Monday August 20th, 2001 8:22:02 PM

Cantos mutters to himself and shakes his head, "Gifts so easily given often have a huge penalty added - but I cannot argue with a teleport straight to Gorgantyr at all. I say we move quickly."

Ciaran (DM Dave)
Tuesday August 21st, 2001 4:53:48 AM

Ciaran responds to Gareth, "The witches have learned much from their battles with others among the ruins, and know how control their spells, to an extent."

Dalelad (DM Dave)
Tuesday August 21st, 2001 4:56:10 AM

Seeing that the mage now knows everything that the halfling knows, and not having found any blueglow moss in the area, Dalelad looks to Gareth for approval, then says, "Well, away we go!" and teleports the group to the street intersection near Gorgontyr.

The warrior looks at Nonam with great suprise. "I hope you have chosen wisely, my friend. At least your spells will hopefully work better.". As they find themselves near the witches he begins scanning the area carefully and says "I guess I'll see if my ring works here.". He tries to go invisible again. "Hey Nonam, do you now know anything about our 'destiny'? You know, those red glowing eyes?".

When they appear near the Gortantyr, Qualde moves into the partial shadows of the nearest building and begins examining the old festhall, looking for entrances, posted guards, and the general condition of the structure (Spot=23). As she passes Gareth and Nonam, she murmurs, "I think that you and Dalelad have chosen well, Nonam. Has your new allegiance improved your control with magical implements? If so now might be a good time for that wand." She gestures to where Gareth stood when last he spoke.

Nonam quickly surveys the surroundings upon arrival. Then he follows Qualde into the shadows (hide=20). Once there he answers Gareth, "It's a queen who is trapped here. We will proably have to deal with that after our initial task." Then he takes out his wand, "Give me just a moment... who needs a strength boost? Anyone still have the earlier one?"

Missed Memories, Missed Magic (DM Dave)  d100=15 d100=28 d100=65 d100=45
Wednesday August 22nd, 2001 5:31:49 AM

Memories flood Nonam’s and Dalelad’s minds, bringing fresh perspective on surroundings walked through earlier in the day. At one time, Myth Drannor was home to some fifty-five thousand elves, dwarves, humans, gnomes and halflings. Like most large cities, Myth Drannor was split into quarters or "wards" with different functions. The city is truely ancient, its origins stretching back more than five thousand years, to when the first Coronal raised the Rule Tower & built Castle Cormanthor around it. For a century the castle was the only ground building in the city, all the rest were great tree dwellings. It took over a thousand years before the elves raised any other towers to grace the sky next to the castle, arching crystal spans high above breached the gaps between tress & towers, creating beautiful walkways among the forest's branches. While the whole city was known for millennia as Cormanthor, there were three distinct sections of the old city. The "city center" was located north & east of castle Cormanthor, but over the centuries temples were founded in the peaceful glades to the west of the castle, and soon the religious communities around them grew enough to become a larger part of the city, known as Sheshyrinnam, "the homes of the faithful". After another millennia of expanding to the north, many of the rich, older clans built grand villas to the south, and this southern quarter of the city became Kerradunath. Until the raising of the Mythal and the renaming of Cormanthor to Myth Drannor, the eastern quarter - Dlabraddath - was primarily filled with gardens & parks.

Glancing about, Nonam ‘remembers’ some of the nearby buildings. To the west, the Dancing Dryad seems still intact, and across the street from it, also on Sunblade street, Scholar's Hope also seems well-preserved – its numerous buildings linked into a small religious compound, consisting of two temples, an underground shrine & an elven tree dwelling was a unified set of shrines, but worship wasn’t the main focus. The clergy of four gods gathered their libraries here, to pool and share knowledge among the races of Myth Drannor, with the collection open to the public.

To the south, near the now-demolished Weave Mistresses' Hearth (A once-soaring edifice of blue crystal & marble temple to a god of magic) lies the ruins of the House of Miritar, a stone-tree villa of the gold elf Miritar Clan. Near it, at the intersection of Sixstar, the central keep of Windsong Tower (a magically-altered shadowtop tree holding a 3 story building within its trunk called Shadowsong) can be seen still intact. This famed school of sorcery (one of several in Myth Drannor) lies behind an encircling wrought-iron fence shaped to resemble arcs of lightning, leaping flames, frost & snowflakes, clouds and huge hands - all holding aloft 9' high silver spikes. Its name came from the intricately carved stone facades along the central building that whistled when the wind blew. It had no visible openings into any of the buildings, and no gate in the Tower Fence.

Breaking reverie, attention is turned to what remains of Gorgontyr: At one time this was a three story building reached via a set of stairs set into the petrified hollow oak. The dining plates used in the hall were crafted from gorgon scales, and the drinking horns were crafted from the horns of gorgons. Now the devastation is so great in this section of the city, so that any newcomer would likely pass it by without knowing. The upper rooms fell to street level, and the great stone trunk of the tree lies split in three pieces, looking more like the parts of a street monument.

The group spots only one viable entrance through the rubble, into a dark opening filled with cracked gargoyle statues. The very observant heroes note that no creatures are immediately in the vicinity, although several winged things are taking flight a quarter of a mile away to the southwest (from Castle Cormanthor).

Onrad starts to become invisible, then reappears, Cantos' magic seems to work, then fails, and Gareth fails to even flicker out of view.

The warrior shrugs as his ring fails to work. "Oh well, looks like stealth isn't going to be the rule of the day - unless our 2 newly oath-bound friends have any suggestions. For now, I'll take that strength shot, Nonam. Also, if our halfling friend can recharge it that would be a good thing too.".

After he's been zapped he moves into whatever shadows there are. Unless the others have any suggestions, he looks for a way in. Speaking softly he says "If anyone has stealth capability, please feel free to use it. Otherwise I'd say we just go in and clean up. If we wait they'll have time to prepare. Comments?".

Dalelad has a confused look on his face, and says, "Addinein, what's that around your feet?" Scattered on the pavement about the dark elf are crossbow bolts, a stack of scrolls and papers, a huge length of rope, various sacks, some waterskins, and some smaller items.

A pile of coins and gems sits behind Gareth. Nestled amongst them are several potion bottles.

Gareth
Wednesday August 22nd, 2001 3:08:00 PM

"Uh, guys. Would these be gifts from our friend - or a trap?". He move the coins around with the tip of his sword.

Qualde
Wednesday August 22nd, 2001 5:15:47 PM

The dark priestess frowns and asks, "Gareth, do have -- ah -- magical space in your pack? Perhaps space now too small for these," and she gestures at the coins on the ground. "Direct assault appeals. If Nonam also use wand for me? Long day has ended first cast."

If she recognizes some of the gear on the ground as belonging to Addinein, she helps him to pick it up. "I can carry some of this -- what do you need access to?"

Cantos
Wednesday August 22nd, 2001 11:37:56 PM

Cantos curses his inability to cast. "I need that spell -- without it I am next to useless in Melee." Spotting the items on the ground Cantos checks his pack and items. If any are his he will pick them up and place them in his pack. If they are not his nor anyone else's he will look at the scrolls and potions to see if it's anything he can use. "It seems that we have no choice but to try a bold approach."

Addinein
Thursday August 23rd, 2001 4:25:55 AM

Taking time to look at his haversack. Addinein checks to make sure that it is at least a back pack. If it's a backpack, he'll do his best to repack it. Thanking his sister, Addinein reponds, "Mostly the spells and potions. Other stuff is unimportant right now."

Holding his sword, Gareth gets the distinct impression of discomfort from his blade. Looking at the items on the ground, they seem suspiciously familiar - a couple of those gems look like ones you've been toting in your bag of holding.

True to Qualde's words, it is quickly discovered that the items are the ground are in fact from your bags/pouches/backpacks - they no longer have the capacity to hold all of the items as they once did. Nonam, checking his robes, notes that everything is still in place within them.

Calling forth the power of the Wand of the Bull results in no effect for either Cantos or Qualde.

Nonam (contingency)
Thursday August 23rd, 2001 8:09:38 AM

"I can manipulate the Mythal around us for a moment. During that time, you can get all your stuff back in place and turn yourselves invisible, and I can use the wand on a few of you. I might not have time for everyone. Gareth, you have a potion you might could use instead. Unless this is a dead magic zone, everything will work for a moment, but it might stop again right after. So prepare what you want to do, and I'll cast in a moment."
While everyone prepares, Nonam checks his memories to make sure that this isn't a dead magic zone now, so he doesn't waste his weave mythal spell.
