DM Steve -- 6/14 -- Does this seem too easy?
Monday June 14th, 2021 8:25:53 PM

Tishe’ recognizes the area, and is happy to be home.
Barratore does not want to put Magpie Crossing in danger, and suggests they stay here. He points out that Edson may still have a problem.
Edson is surprised to be with the others, and expects a trick.
Lanliss looks around, worried they are still in Koshe Marr somehow.
Emrys tries to talk with his coven.
Velarin makes sure Lanliss and the keystone made the trip. He suggests heading home or -- even better -- setting up a place to rest here.
Brom thinks escape was too easy, and perhaps this is Edson’s realm.

Neither Tishe’ nor Lanliss notice anything unusual for Cinnamon Valley. If this is a trick, it is a well-made one. Emrys reaches his coven via cauldron, learning that not much has happened lately. Nothing unusual, anyway.

It takes a while to register, but the feeling of this place is different than the group has been dealing with lately. If this is Koshe Marr, it’s the only calming place that they’ve been in Koshe Marr. It’s as if an emotional pressure has been released.

OOC: Not that they need it, but everyone gains 200,000 XP for the adventure in Marteus's Land.

She sobers when Barratorre mentions dangers and that things aren't quite complete yet: Lanliss still has the Keystone. "Agreed, staying here for a bit to hand this off may be the best course. I'll start setting up defenses."

Barratore nods at Broms initial suggestion. That made some sense to the fighter as well. Emrys' contact to his coven though, seals it. They were home. All they had to do now was to hold the line until Q could come and get the Keystone.
Barratore suggests that Lanliss and the Keystone go in and stay in the Mage mansion with V. If anything comes in that shouldnt be there, V could simply end the spell. That would allow anyone still outside to help as well as provide Lanliss opportunity to get away with the Keystone

Barratore plans to remain outside. He set about building a fire the old fashion way and finds a spot to sit and enjoy the cleaner air of the Wold.

This might be one of his last times in the wold like this, and he plans to take it all in. He sits by Barratores fire... taking in a deep breath of the land and fire mixed and just tries to relax.

Ooc: On a tablet tonight . Thus the change of format.

Tishe' sets up a magical ward and Velarin conjures a mansion for the group to visit or stay in. Lanliss is relieved, while Edson is somber. Barratore builds a fire outside the mansion, and enjoys the fresh air with Edson for company.

The troop is somewhat expecting a visitor to come for the keystone, but if anyone is coming they don't seem to be in a hurry. Birds sing, a rabbit hops by.

The group arrived back in the Wold around mid-afternoon, leaving several daylight hours for waiting. Those pass, as does an uneventful night. The next day, the birds and rabbit are still around -- maybe different birds, probably the same rabbit.

Emrys is quiet.

The next morning, when Brom returns from the farmstead he has Qaphsiel in tow. She had discovered the group had not returned to the manor and tried the farmstead since it was close.

“I’m afraid I cannot stay long. We were glad to hear of your success, and ask that you safekeep the object for a while. Go about your usual routines,” she says this last sentence as if she finds it humorous. “Do not worry, should certain eyes look your way, help will be there.”

Brom asks Qaphsiel what they should do now.

Qaphsiel is shocked. “Wait, what? Who knows you are the ones who took the stone? You were supposed to grab it and run. If they know in Koshe Marr, then of course you cannot go back home now. Perhaps you had best tell me what happened, that I may seek the counsel of my patron.”

Qaphsiel does not delay her responses to the group’s questions in order to hear their story, however. . .

Why do we need to keep the stone?
I was simply informed to ask you to do so for a short while.

While Tishe’ and Qaphsiel glare at each other, the rabbit that has been nibbling at the underbrush in the vicinity hops over, and with a slight “POP,” where it was now stands a manfri. Tall for a manfri -- the equal of a gnome -- with black skin, white hair, and gray eyes, he is sleek and young, and somehow familiar. His outfit is made from a combination of hide, grass, beads, and feathers, and he wears an over-large headdress. He opens a pouch at his side, pulls out the rabbit, and lets it go back to its underbrush.

“Qaphsiel, they think you are finding fault with what they have accomplished. It is, after all, a task that could easily have proved to be beyond even their considerable abilities.” The azata is abashed at the manfri’s statement.

The manfri looks up at Barratore, who finds the gaze intimidating, ”From what the rabbit just heard, Edson is the last person who should have that stone.” He transfers his gaze to Edson. “What to do with you, in particular? The rabbit tells me. . . Well, I think one of two things has happened. Either the Powers of Koshe Marr haven’t come for you because the conditions of your deal have not yet been met, or they are searching for you but haven’t yet succeeded because of the blessing that Qaphsiel invoked to protect your group.” He pauses, considering.

The manfri addresses the group, “The blessing will last only so long. So I offer all of you a choice. You may be rid of the keystone by giving it to me, which will draw most of the attention away from all of you except Edson. Or you may continue to guard it yourselves, which will test your luck. That does not mean making poor decisions and hoping everything turns out all right. It means smart choices and hard work knowing that luck is still involved -- like casting a spell to protect yourselves that also stopped Qaphsiel from finding you quickly.” Tishe’ feels a glow of approval tinged with regret.

“Either way, let me see the thing.”

Maybe it is the Manfri, a race of people The Sargrass native trusts implicitly. Maybe it is his obvious magic or his wise words. No. It’s probably how the Presence of the Manfri turns this into a much different conversation than it was but a moment ago.

She bows with hand on heart, “the land my life” “Talki fresal, dondit likki”, she says, and becomes a little chagrined at his words. ”I try my best, but don’t have the wisdom to see many possibilities. While I would be willing to travel my entire like and keep the Keystone so there is no place for evil forces to focus upon, I fear that is only a delay.”

Tishe’ doesn’t say what is the next reasonable action, looking to her friends for reinforcement or confirmation.

Tishe’ trusts the Manfri implicitly. She notes that having the Keepers keep the keystone would only delay things..

Velarin tries to defuse any growing misunderstandings. He does not want to be stuck guarding the stone indefinitely.
Edson looks for an outcome that benefits everyone.
Emrys, Lanliss, and Barratore let the others do the arguing.

The manfri takes Brom’s attitude in stride. “Oops, almost forgot,” he says, rubbing his hands together. He blows gently across his palms, and a small cloud of warmth surrounds the group and heals their wounds.

Then he continues, “Wanting proof is another smart choice. But it’s ramifications. . . I can’t guess what proof would satisfy you. Qaphsiel was not supposed to say who she was working with, so I can’t prove I’m one of the good guys. But recall that the success of your mission depended on a diversion to occupy someone we will not name here. Those carrying out the diversion had no more idea what you were doing than you have what they did. Yet there was enough trust in both groups that both of you succeeded. And now, unless you’ve talked this over beforehand and agreed on the proof you need, it looks like at least some of you will have to gamble.”

”Also remember that the stone you carry powers a disease forge that would have affected all of creation had it’s maker’s plans borne fruit. Taking that thing was the outcome that benefits everyone.”

DM Steve -- We are going to need to come up with a resolution to this
Tuesday June 22nd, 2021 10:56:49 PM

Tishe’ begins to feel uncomfortable with who they might be talking to. She says show him the stone.
Brom agrees with what the Manfri said, but remains cautious. He reluctantly agrees to showing him the stone.
Velarin agrees. Whoever set them on this quest have been true to their word.
Emrys agrees. He is interested in the Manfri’s reaction when he sees it.
Lanliss shows the stone.
Edson waits to see the manfri's reaction.

The manfri grunts upon seeing the stone, as if it’s neither what he expected nor surprising. He looks at it carefully, then selects a red gem from his pouch. He rolls the gem around in his hands for a few moments, until it is the right size, shape, and color. The manfri is still not satisfied, however. ”There’s something odd about the way you hold that. It isn’t just heavy, there’s some power to it. This trinket will never stand up to close inspection.”

”My offer’s still on the table -- you can keep that stone. Even if you don’t keep the stone, you can have pride in the knowledge of a job well done. Did Qaphsiel explain what the stone and it’s forge would do?”

Qaphsiel replies, ”I explained as much as you said I could. About the disease forge and revenge plague, as well as about why they were chosen.”

The manfri grins. ”Very well. I await your decision on what you want to do.”

Being unable to sense the motives of an amorous teenager, V instead relies on logic and reason.

"I believe we should give him the stone. It will be safest in his hands. While we do not know him, or can necessarily trust him, I believe he is true to his words. He and his allies were powerful enough to know that the diseased one had it, and what he intended to do with it. They were able to find us, and set us on the path to prevent a wold wide plague. They were powerful enough to completely distract the diseased one from his realm and prized possession long enough for us to break in, take it, and kill many of his guardians. It all come down to what we believe. Do we believe them false, and wanting to use it for some other nefarious purpose? Or do we believe them to be as they have presented themselves? We took Q at her word when we accepted this mission with little to no information, and that right there i think speaks to what we believe."

"As long as it is with us, we would all have to remain ever vigilant and ready to defend it together, and that would need to be our sole purpose and focus. Every other wrong that needed righting, every other horrible event that we knew of, would have to take a back seat, and we would have to sit them out. Until the end of our days, our only purpose would be the safe guarding of that stone."

"That is all I have to say. I say to give him the stone."

Barratore keeps his arms folded and his mouth shut. A Manfri might hold a great deal of weight for Tishe from the Sagrass, but not to him.
"And now that the missions are over and complete, there should be no objection to telling us who has been pulling our strings and if the first words out of your mouth are some blathering about how we had a choice in any of this I will need every bit of my restraint to not decorate the nearby bushes with you and the Azata."

Looking at V, "And as the idea was to find an out of the way place and work on not intervening in every horrible event we hear of. Having of the stone or not, doesn't seem to really matter. But my time here is pretty limited, you elves are going to have to live with what we do for a considerably longer time, So my vote goees with you."

Back to the Manfri, "As what to do with Edson, you can make suggestions in a i'd like to help manner or bugger off. You don't get to decide to DO anything."

Velarin concludes they should give the manfri the keystone.
Barratore agrees, but wants answers and a solution to Edson’s plight.
Tishe’ agrees with Velarin’s decision.
Lanliss points out that the manfri is of two minds on their best course.
Edson nods when Barratore brings him up.

Velarin explains his decision, "I believe we should give him the stone. It will be safest in his hands. While we do not know him, or can necessarily trust him, I believe he is true to his words. He and his allies were powerful enough to know that the diseased one had it, and what he intended to do with it. They were able to find us, and set us on the path to prevent a wold wide plague. "That is all I have to say. I say to give him the stone."

The manfri nods his approval of Velarin’s argument, but makes no move to take the stone.

Barratore addresses the manfri, "And now that the missions are over and complete, there should be no objection to telling us who has been pulling our strings and if the first words out of your mouth are some blathering about how we had a choice in any of this I will need every bit of my restraint to not decorate the nearby bushes with you and the Azata."

”There is no harm, now, I suppose. Wardd learned of the Diseased One’s plot somehow, perhaps while he was a god of testing, and decided to help the Wold now. I think it’s a bit much to say he was pulling your strings, but you were chosen carefully and well.”

After agreeing with the decision to turn over the keystone, Barratore continues with the Manfri, "As what to do with Edson, you can make suggestions in a ‘I'd like to help’ manner or bugger off. You don't get to decide to DO anything."

The manfri replies, ”I would like to help. You have no idea how much the plight of a cursed soul calls to me. That’s why I offered you the chance to keep the stone -- why, as your companion points out, I am conflicted.” He does not seem pleased that that was pointed out. He turns to speak to Edson, ”I don’t know what deal you made, but I expect that their end of any bargain has been upheld. If you can find a way to prevent that or show it has not happened, some technicality I suppose, then maybe they would lose their ability to claim you.”

With that, the manfri reaches to take the stone from Lanliss.

Tishe’s brown eyes pop wide with the Manfri’s words and her mouth forms a perfect ‘o’. “Eureka!”, she shouts, excited. “I have found it!”

To the Manfri she wags a humorous finger like someone admonishing a character in a pantomime play. “Don’t you dare whisper a word about this to anyone, Gambler!”

And then she turns to her fellow Keepers. “Sieur Edson said the MistPowers told him that would come to pass IF he succeeded in his mission. And by Wardd’s Luck,” she winks at the Manfri, “we can guarantee we do NOT succeed, not completely. “
“First, our team ‘You’ mission from Quasphiel included to not raise an alarm, and we did.
“Second, Sieur Edson, your ‘You’ mission included thumbing your nose at the Dragon Consortium. And you haven’t…. Yet. “

“So if we don’t brag about it, we failed Edison’s quest. State matter-of-fairly OK, but not rubbing the DCs nose in it. “

Barratore seems unsure but agrees.
Emrys has all the fame he needs.
Edson feels like this might work.
Lanliss asks, "So our Edson is here to stay?"
Brom continues to keep watch.

The manfri takes the keystone, dropping both it and the fake into his pouch. “The Wold owes you it’s thanks, and if I understand rightly it will never learn that. But I thank you. And I hope this works out. But just in case the urge to tell your tale becomes to great. . . Well, among the azatas, lillends like Qaphsiel are the tale-tellers and chroniclers, gathering lore and recording stories in the form of epic poems and songs. She will tell this story far and wide, with a few embellishments and some artistic license,” the manfri chuckles. “In a short while, people will believe they know the tale of this theft, almost like gospel. It’s hard to lord something over someone who thinks they know better, so even if the urge to brag overtakes you there’s a good chance you won’t be believed..”

“Your blessing is still intact -- you are safe from divination for a while yet. Go in health, keep your heads down, and good luck.”

With that the manfri and the azata disappear.

Greetings Woldians!

We have TWO games that have achieved Level 20 and just retired over the weekend! So in our usual tradition, we're holding a celebration for the next few days on the Giggling Ghost board!

Folks are already beginning to gather. We expect everyone to join in and post daily on the GG board, but all are excused from posting in their "regular career game" through Wednesday at least. :) It doesn't mean you can't post, just that you don't have to.

DMs if you're in combat, feel free to just post a "pause until after Wednesday" if you'd like, or you can do that anyway. These celebrations are important as both of these games have players who have been working for at least 9 years to achieve this retirement for their PCs.

--DMs may take the role of an NPC or 2 if they wish and hand out dishes, create action, help out, etc.
--Anyone may take the stage and tell a story or sing a song.
--Post as many times a day as you'd like on the Giggling Ghost board.

Entertain yourselves and enjoy!

Yes you may go there now and post.
Yes you should go there now and post.
What are you waiting for?
Yes, now is fine.
Are you still reading this? Why?

'Finally some time with Manolo...need to start to think about the next generation', he thinks to himself.
"We saved the Wold...The Giggling Ghost is the perfect place", Lanliss says and agrees with the keepers idea.
Lanliss bids farewell to Velarin "Don't forget us !", he shouts to him, "Are you coming to the ghost ?", he shouts even louder....hoping that they will have a full party for a celebration at the giggling ghost. .

OOC: Wow we did it (:
