DM Kathy Sunday January 31st, 2010 11:56:47 PM Zeph has a little time to check in with his foster father, who is glad to see you. You only have time for a short visit, though, as you still have a big night ahead.
You gather yourselves together and follow Dulcet westward toward Witchspawn. The sun has set, so your way is lit by whatever torches and lanterns you bring with you. The air is chill, and a little damp, but it is not raining. Yet. The moons play hide-and-seek with you, disappearing and reappearing as the blowing clouds move across their faces.
"We need not go all the way to the town," Dulcet tells you. "But I do want to get in range of the stronger ley lines. We may only have one chance at this, and I want to make sure we succeed."
Nearly three hours later, she seems to have found what she is looking for. She guides your group to a stop near a pair of sycamore trees. "This should do," she says. "We'll need a fire, if you would be so kind. I will begin preparing the herbs."

"Well, before some of us go haring off to collect wood, do please let's set watches. There are folks who are not so keen on us doing what we intend to do, and they may show up looking for that 'last second save,' as the kiddies say."
Cambar, at least, will stay alert and keep watch. Spot 20 and 11; Listen 21 and 22.

"Dulcet, do you have an estimate as to how long this ritual may take? One hour? Several hours? The whole night? It would greatly aid in planning our defenses."
Donovan {AC:22 ~ HP:52/52} Monday February 1st, 2010 10:35:45 AM
I think that instead of setting watches that Everyone be on full alert. No doubt those men in black will be arriving full force and we need everyone up and at full readiness when they do. Also, those with trap setting capabilities. Go set some around. Put the animals at the 4 corners so they can alert us when someone or something approaches. And, like in the cemetery, set up fires. And make sure we do our best to stay in the shadows of said fires so the enemy does not get a clear line.
Yelena, any long lasting spells you can cast on us now, please do so. Something that will last for her incantations. Surely, something of this line will take a while to complete before the artifact can be destroyed. Makes only sense.
Those with hiding abilities, do so, as our forward scouts. I will stay close to Dulcet as a protector. Cambar, I know you would rather be fighting on horseback, but, I don't think tonight you will be afforded that opportunity. So make preperations for ground combat. Yelena, be ready to move about the battlefield doing your god's work. Primary is our health, secondary is their demise.
<clapping his gauntleted hands together> Lets be professional tonight folks, our lives and those we love are at stake.
Donovan makes ready.
Yelena Monday February 1st, 2010 2:30:43 PM

As Dulcet begins her preparations, Donovan makes plans for the defense of the party, which you begin to set up. Cambar remains on watch.
"It's difficult to say exactly how long," Dulcet tells Yelena "More than an hour, I think, but hopefully less than two."
Garret and Zeph gather firewood, remaining hidden from anyone who might be watching.
When you have enough firewood, you set up Dulect's fire, as well as the watchfires that Donovan suggested. Dulcet barely looks up from her herbs and bottles and jars and mortar and pestle as she continues giving instructions.
"The ritual involves several readings from the Book of the Guided Way," she says. "Yelena, perhaps you would be the best one to handle that."
"Cambar, your task will be to stand by the Mercy of the Gods, and light it at my signal. Donovan, please take charge of the wyvern sting. Zeph, you have some arcane ability, so you are the best one to weild the Opal Sword. And Garret, you have done a good job protecting the evil tome thus far. It is only fitting that you hold it until we are ready to destroy it."
"However, we still have a few minutes before these herbs are ready. Please make whatever preparations you require. With any luck, we'll get this done before our enemies even know where we are."
Yelena Tuesday February 2nd, 2010 9:25:06 AM
"Certainly, Dulcet. I would be happy to read from the Book." She removes her holy symbol and holds it overhead while slowly chanting to Pantheon. Everyone in the camp feels a slight prickling on their skin, as though putting on clothes that are a little too tight. "There. I have warded the camp. It should last close to an hour. My other spells may have to wait, since they last just a few minutes before expiring. The warding is centered on Donovan, since seems to draw a great deal of attention from enemies." Yelena smiles at Donovan, then picks up the Book of the Guided Way, "I will cast more spells if there seems to be a need. Be sure to keep a keen eye for intruders."
Magic Circle Against Evil focused on Donovan. +2 deflection bonus to AC and a +2 resistance bonus on saves, immunity to enchantment (charm) effects and enchantment (compulsion) to all allies within 10'.
Garret Goodbarrel [AC:26 HP:25/25] Tuesday February 2nd, 2010 9:42:49 AM
As the tome is handed to Garret, he takes it carefully and looks around, "Me? You want me to hold this thing? I saw what happened to the last guy that held this close. If I turn and turn with it, you people better kill me quick."
Donovan {AC:22 ~ HP:52/52} Tuesday February 2nd, 2010 10:09:02 AM
Waits. Waits near Garret. Waits to knock out Garret should the book try taking control of him.

Cambar (HP38, AC25) Tuesday February 2nd, 2010 11:29:44 AM
OOC: What's the Book of the Guided Way? Is that the evil tome that we're supposed to be destroying? Why would we want to read from an evil book?
If Dulcet is really proposing that we read from the evil book, then Cambar is going to get suspicious. What if the Book took over Dulcet?
Yelena Tuesday February 2nd, 2010 5:20:23 PM
OOC: I believe they are separate. Dulcet asks Yelena to read from the Book of the Guided Way, and Garret to hold the 'evil tome.'

Zeph holds the Opal Sword in his right hand rather proudly. He also casts some spells to prepare himself. First he casts Shield on himself, then he casts Shocking Grasp and holds the charge in his hand.
"If someone were to ambush us, now would be the proper time I suppose." Zeph says quietly.

DM Kathy Wednesday February 3rd, 2010 12:04:40 AM
[OOC: Zeph is correct. The Book of the Guided Way is different from the Vaaphryn Codex. The Vaaphryn Codex is the evil book.]
Dulcet nods, acknowledging Garret's concerns. "Best keep it in the box until we are ready for it," she agrees.
A few minutes later, she says, "Let us begin."
Thus prompted, Yelena begins the first of the readings, as Dulcet drops her herbal preparations, one by one into the Mercy of the Gods. As Yelena finishes, Dulcet takes over, chanting words in some mystical language you do not understand. Colored sparks twinkle among the trees, and a sudden wind begins to blow.
"Now, Cambar!" she says, and Cambar lights the herbs with the flaming brand she holds. Several loud pops follow, accompanied by flashes of color. Then a smoke, thick and pungent, begins flowing through the clearing.
"Next passage," she says, and Yelena takes up the reading again.
"Garret, the book," she says, and he carefully opens the box to extract it. "Toss it on the crucible," she says. When the Vaaphryn Codex makes contact with the Mercy of the Gods, a veritible column of smoke rushes upward with a massive WHOOSH!. The wind blows harder.
"Zeph and Donovan! You must strike the book at the same time with the sting and sword. On my signal....NOW!"
As the sting and sword stab into the Codex, a pulse of energy flares out of it, along with a light that seems brighter than the sun. You are all knocked off your feet by the burst, and your watchfires all wink out. Those of you who fail a DC 18 Fortitude save are temporarily blinded by the bright flash.
Yelena d20+6=26 ; Wednesday February 3rd, 2010 12:40:04 AM
Bowled by the powerful burst of energy, Yelena sees the powerful flash through tightly shut eyes as she lands hard on the ground. Scrambling to her feet and coughing to catch her breath, she surveys the scene with watchful eyes.

OOC: Yelena is going to cast a light spell if we are in darkness, otherwise she will gladly lead the blind to safety :)
DM Kathy Thursday February 4th, 2010 1:14:48 AM
Startled shouts are replaced with cries to one another. What happened? Where did the light go? Is everybody okay? Zeph pulls out his weapon, ready to defend the camp.
You soon realize that Garret, Donovan, Cambar, and Dulcet have all been temporarily blinded by the flash. Yelena and Zeph can see that the main fire still burns, and there is light to see by.
The Vaaphryn Codex is now nothing more than a smoldering black lump. Of the wyvern sting, there is no sign; it appears to have been entirely consumed in the ritual just as the herbs were. The Mercy of the Gods is now a blackened, twisted scrap of metal. In all likelihood, it, too is destroyed. The blade of the Opal Sword has been blackened, but its shape and integrity seems intact. Possibly it can be cleaned and restored. The Book of the Guided Way is completely unharmed.
You look around, but see no sign of enemies approaching. It would seem there will not be an attack this night (because some of us take deadlines seriously ;) ).
The blinded ones find that their sight begins to come back after only a few minutes, and within about 15 minutes they can see as well as they ever could.
It would appear your quest is complete.
Garret Goodbarrel [AC:26 HP:25/25] Thursday February 4th, 2010 8:24:38 AM
Garret remains seated on the ground as his eyes start to regain sight. "Wow. All I can say is Wow."
Zeph AC26(Prot from evil, Shield) HP 42/42 Loot Thursday February 4th, 2010 5:23:11 PM
Zeph stops spinning his spiked chain as he sees there are no enemies.
Then Zeph slowly realizes that the quest he started on two years ago with many different people has ended.
He thinks back to those who died, those who abandoned him, those who betrayed trust. All the hardships, all the trials. The hawkmen, the giants, the Orcs, Rollo, Selemar, Axara, Owain, Charldorl, Sebastian, Feyjarl, Kiel, Dathish, Camlan, Hmark...
Zeph falls to his knees, dropping his weapon next to him. Then he sits down and puts his elbows on his knees an his hands over his eyes looking to the ground... and weeps.
"Two years..." is all Zeph says
Zeph is now 22 years old. He began at 20. He never celebrated his birthday once... which is November 24th by the way.
Cambar (HP38, AC25) Thursday February 4th, 2010 9:49:04 PM
Cambar looks around. Her first thought is relief that the Opal Sword is okay. "I'm glad we can take this back to the Queen," she says.
She watches Zeph. She sighs. "I wish my brother were here," she says, quietly. "I miss him."
Yelena Thursday February 4th, 2010 9:57:44 PM
Yelena gently pats Zeph as he cries, "You have lived more in those two years than most do their whole lives, young friend. Memories to cherish as you continue forward in your travels. We all play our parts in the order of time, but in the great tapestry of fate, your thread is vibrant indeed." Looking to the others, "As have you all."
Yelena regards the smoking lump previously known as the Vaaphryn Codex, "If you do not object, Dulcet, my order has requested the remains. There is a very cozy, unmarked, lead-lined box awaiting them in the catacombs beneath our monastery. It will be forgotten, which is probably safest."
"Pantheon bless you, my friends. My time with you is at an end. My duties demand me, and my order requires a report of our success. I wish you safe and prosperous travels as you endeavor to right wrongs and win glory. I will accompany you to the village, but then I must depart. It has satisfying indeed to be in your company." With that, Yelena places both hands over her eyes and bows deeply before the group.
DM Kathy Friday February 5th, 2010 1:22:49 AM
"Well." Dulcet climbs slowly to her feet. "Well. Whatever we do next, we still have a long walk ahead of us. Then I suggest we sleep for what remains of the night before we make any big decisions. But if your order is willing to take charge of the remains, Yelena, that is probably for the best."
For now, Dulcet carefully places the blackened lump into the lead-lined wooden box and hands it back to Garret. "Can you take charge of this one last time, my friend?" she asks.
She also scoops up the remains of the Mercy of the Gods, regret on her face. The metal all but crumbles at her touch. "This does not look salvageable," she says, "but I would like to bury it with honor. Perhaps in the little temple Rollo set up."
When you are all gathered again, she leads you back to Jarlwolf. Before you have gotten halfway, it begins to rain--just a light mist, really, but it is enough to chill you and make you long for journey's end.
The quest also began with a long, wet trudge. Of the companions who began on that inauspicious night, bickering in the rain, only Zeph remains. But all of you who make this journey now have been tested in the fires of adversity. You have suffered, and bled, and struggled, and now your quest is complete.
And you are heroes.
You arrive at Dulcet's at last. There isn't much left to the night at this point, but with the help of her servant you are able to quickly get dried off and make the most of the time you have left. Decisions will come in the morning, but for now it is time to rest.
Cambar (HP38, AC25) Friday February 5th, 2010 8:21:38 AM
Cambar thinks she should be more miserable in this wet, but in fact she feels happy. "Good job, everyone!" she says.
OOC: Congrats to Zeph on his stick-to-it-iveness! And I'm glad to report that Hmark, who only missed a few months out of this game's run, will be rejoining us for the combo game.

Garret takes the heavy box and notices that the lead doesn't feel so heavy now.

Donovan rides back in silence, as per his usual modus operendi, then proceeds to tend to the horses yet again upon arrival, followed by a well deserved trip to the bar, bath and bed.

Garret Goodbarrel [AC:26 HP:25/25] Friday February 5th, 2010 7:11:54 PM

You are more than ready for sleep by the time you lie down for the evening. For most of you, your sleep is peaceful and dreamless.
Zeph Highlight to display spoiler: { Your dreams are troubled. First, you relive the moment when your father came home, soaked in rain and his own blood, and crashed onto the dining table. "Take this," he says, handing you the short sword. In your dream, he continues with, "your vengeance will be theirs." As he speaks, you get sudden glimpse of people, humans and dwarves, terrified, in the dark. Some creatures with snakes' tongues are driving them deeper into the darkness.
Then you are once again standing face to face with Sebastian, who betrayed you all. He is struck down, but then he rolls over and his dead lips speak to you. "The web binds all," he says. You get another image, of a spider in a web. You can see that some of the web's strands lead to the frightened people in the dark. Some lead to a great city, floating on a lake. And some lead to another city, even larger, sitting grandly atop three plateaus.
You hear a voice in your head: "Zeph Illidian. I charge thee. Go to them. Give them the justice for which they pray."}
Those who arise early the next morning find that Dulcet is not yet up. The hospitality of her house, however, is as good as you remember, and a hearty breakfast is set out. Outside, it is raining in earnest.
When Dulcet finally joins you, it is nearly noon. "I would like to bury the Mercy of the Gods this afternoon," she says. "And Yelena, if you can take the remains of the Codex to your order, that would be for the best. Then we will see what can be done with the Sword."

"My vengeance will be theirs. Give them the justice for which they pray... I have not forgotten my vows." Zeph thinks as he cracks open a Geography book and looks for a City on a Lake somewhere in the region... The Floating City?
And... Plateau City?
Sliver, Zeph's tiny viper familiar looks up at him and flicks its silver tongue. The red double helix shines against his black scales... "I will need money." Zeph says aloud.
During breakfast when Dulcet asks about burying the Mercy of the Gods, Zeph replies with a piece of parchment that states: ----------------------------------------------------------------- Bill of Sale Two years contract, set at the rate of 50gold per week on Sunday May 18th, 2008 8:58:43 PM, stated by Ms. Dulcet, spokeswoman of the Pitchfork council. Heroes archive, Homecoming chapter.
4weeks per month X 12months in a year X 2 years X 50gold = 4800 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "For supplies... I feel my journey has not ended. And I would be happy to assist with burial and return of the Sword... free of charge." Zeph says, looking into Dulcet's eyes and smiling.

A knock on the front door can be faintly heard from the room, followed by the movement of a house servant to answer. Shortly thereafter, the man enters the room occupied by Dulcet and the group, strides up to Dulcet, and informs her that "our visitor claims to be with them..."
The servant cuts off. He had turned to indicate the group, and in doing so, notes with a disapproving frown that the visitor had already followed him into the room.
Hmark stands a step or two inside the threshold, and nods somewhat nervously at Dulcet before looking over at Zeph. "Um. Sorry I stepped out like that. Sorta a family emergency. But I'm done there, and I was wondering if you could still use a hand."

"Garret, I plan on traveling to The Floating City and to Plateau City... not sure which one first, but I have a strong feeling there are people who need help here."
Cambar (HP38, AC25) Tuesday February 9th, 2010 5:23:32 PM

Nice to know it was so memorable. :( ]
Dulcet pushes the parchment back to Zeph. "Let us deal with these details first, and I will see what the Pitchfork Council can authorize," she says.
When Hmark enters, she says, "It is good to see you again, though you missed the excitement. Your quest is complete."
That afternoon, she brings the Mercy of the Gods out behind the temple to the Fey King that Rollo built. "This vessel was sacred to Flower and Pantheon," she says. "I suppose Ebyron won't mind watching over it for them." Using gardening tools, you can easily dig a shallow hole in the earth, which has been softened by the rain. The blackened, twisted remains are placed inside, and you cover it up again. The entire process only takes about 20 minutes.
Afterward, Yelena is dispatched back to her order with the remains of the Codex. They have pledged to keep it secure.
"I need to meet with the Council," she tells you that afternoon. "Perhaps you can take the Opal Sword to the local blacksmith, and see if he can clean it up a bit. And I have been thinking--if you have another quest you need to undertake, perhaps we can find another group willing to return the Opal Sword to Tyrrh Valley. I shall make inquiries."
Cambar (HP38, AC25) Wednesday February 10th, 2010 6:37:04 AM
Cambar looks torn. "I sure am tempted to go with you guys far afield, but I can't go so far from my brother. We're twins, you know."
She thinks about what Dulcet has said. "Since I'm not much of a one to travel as far as you guys seem to want to go, I could take the Opal Sword back, with such help as Lady Dulcet here can arrange."

Zeph's question catches him by surprise, "Floating City???" and he has to spend a half minute or so getting mind adjusted to the named destination before shrugging. "Heck, why not? When do we leave?"
DM Kathy Thursday February 11th, 2010 12:43:57 AM
Dulcet returns from the Pitchfork Council with some good news. "I have a sum of 5,000 gold, to be split among you," she says. "You can divide it however you wish. You also have the thanks of the Council, and of all the people of Cinnamon Valley. Through your heroism, a great evil has been averted."
The blade of the Opal Sword has been cleaned until it is as shiny as it ever was. The opals themselves, however, have dimmed, and neither the blacksmith nor the jeweler in town have been able to restore them to their former brilliance.
"The Sword needs to be returned," Dulcet says, "but if people need your help, you should be on your way as quickly as possible. I will take charge of the Sword's return, if you will entrust it to me."

With the money, I suggest anyone who is retiring the character forfeit their share to the guys who are keeping their toon for the next game... just a thought, though it doesn't make sense roleplay-wise. It would mean Me, Garret, and Hmark from the look of it. Anyone else? If Donovan is making a new toon for the Uncharted Heroes game, then I don't see why a share couldn't go to his new one. Just my opinion though. What do yall think?)
Donovan {AC:20 ~ HP:60/60} Thursday February 11th, 2010 11:09:58 AM
ooc: that's up to cayzle. I know hes gonna be the DM, but I made donovan as his cousin, who's been through thick and thin with her from the days of training until now. He wouldn't leave her now. So, with that said, and the DM allows it. I would just make a new character for the game.
Hmark Thursday February 11th, 2010 2:55:08 PM
[OOC] Thanks Kathy for a great game! [/OOC]
Hmark looks over at Zeph. "Any idea where Floating City is?" he asks, having not the least clue himself.
Cambar (HP38, AC25) Thursday February 11th, 2010 6:09:49 PM
[OOC: Thanks, Kathy, for a great game. I only regret I didn't get a wyvern egg to train as my very own!]
Cambar is glad to welcome her cousin to come along on the errand to bring the sword back.
She wishes Zeph, Hmark, and Garret good luck in their mission.
She does not think she earned very much of the 5,000 reward, considering that she was only here for a little bit of it. Maybe a couple hundred gold for expenses.

[OOC: Yes, I play Keela in the Uncharted Lands game. And Cayzle, eggs are notoriously difficult to train. :P Please continue posting as needed to divide the cash and figure out where you're going next.]

Oh, I dunno! I found it pretty easy to get mine to both "roll over" AND "play dead." LOL!
Zeph AC26(Prot from evil, Shield) HP 42/42 Loot Friday February 12th, 2010 6:00:20 PM
Well. I just divided the 5000 by 5 and took 1250gp for Zeph. I suppose Garret, Hmark, Cambar, Donovan can take the other shares? Not too worried about it honestly.
man... I'm hungry for eggs all of a sudden...
Any clues as to how you will put our characters in the Uncharted Heroes game yet Cayzle? Did you want us to state that our characters are heading to The Floating City or what?
Its kind of fun doing this with people you have adventured with already, like Hmark and Garret. I feel like they are long time friends with Zeph. Strong comradery. I hope Donovan's/BrianJ's new toon will be cool as well... which I'm sure it will be. ;)
Cambar (HP38, AC25) Friday February 12th, 2010 7:02:04 PM
In the morning, Cambar gets the opal sword and whatever helpers Dulcet can offer them. "Come on, cousin!" she calls to Donovan.
"Good-bye to you all! And good luck! Look us up when you get back to the Valley!"
OOC: Many thanks to Kathy and all the players for a great time!
Uncharted Heroes DM Cayzle Friday February 12th, 2010 7:03:17 PM
Friends, we will pick up right where we left off here on the Uncharted Lands board on Monday morning. Please go post there Monday!
Also look for e-mail from me this weekend with comments on PC sheets. I may not get to everybody, but I am prioritizing Kent, Brian, and Tanner since they have brand-new PCs.
Garret Goodbarrel [AC:26 HP:25/25] Sunday February 14th, 2010 3:35:04 PM
And who do we e-mail if we don't have access to post there? :)
Uncharted Heroes DM Cayzle Sunday February 14th, 2010 4:40:32 PM
You should e-mail me, but since you just posted that, let me go tinker with permissions right now.
