Flying Dwarves

Zeoll suggests they say something out of respect. And when no one objects offers a short prayer.
Elron points out the corpses can move but it has to be dark and suggests Cyrion is their defense.
The Twins are ready to move on as is Cyrion and Asimov

The party is on a ledge, 10 ft x 20 ft. The room is big – 100 ft x 100 ft. The ceiling and the floor are not visible. There is an archway on the ledge which is blocked by a lattice. The arch is not attached to anything but the floor. There is a keyhole in the lattice.

On the other side of the room is another ledge and a window. On that ledge is Femmu and the eleven dwarves that got past you and into the tower when you were all outside it. They are looking out through the window, trying to convince Femmu to honor Boydos and help wake him up. All the dwarfs (but not Femmu) have strands (cords or strings or cables) rising from their heads up into the void.

Asimov says, "Why not use the flower, mushroom and skeleton key on the keyhole in the lattice instead? I believe those items were the key as the oil was only meant for preserving the mushroom and flower keys. If we open a door with the key maybe we could grab Lady Femmu before the Dwarves know what is happening and be out of here with our captured healer once and for all?"

The Twins suggest they could attack from the ledge and get the drop on the Mindoses however they bring up a diplomatic option.
Elron thinks climbing the lattice should be easy and tries to get Lady Femmu’s attention.
Cyrion says he thinks they should wait on attacking to see if the oil opens the keyhole.
Asimov suggests using the different pieces of the key (skeleton key, mushroom and flower to open the key hole on the lattice and also points out if they are sneaky enough maybe they could leave with Lady Femmu before the Dwarves are any wiser.
Zeoll starts singing to inspire courage and asks who has the skeleton key.
Mundhi says she does not have the key but offers the oil.

Elron starts climbing the lattice, but doesn't go through with it down when Cyrion pulls out the key. He wonders about the ropes on the dwarves, aware that he doesn't really carry anything that would cut through a rope, He wonders about pecking through a rope, which doesn't sound like fun.

Mundhi points out that Cyrion has the skeleton key and suggests rescuing Femmu without killing the silly annoying dwarves unless they try to kill the party.
The Twins draw their bow and suggest they get on with it
Cyrion pulls the key from his pouch and shrugs his shoulders hoping there is no more psychedelic tunnels or lights.
Elron starts climbing the lattice but decides against it when Cyrion pulls out the key. He wonders about the ropes on the dwarves aware that he doesn’t really carry any cutting tools. He wonders about picking through a rope which doesn’t sound like fun.
Zeoll is ready to move through the gate once it is open and moves close enough to cast a spell.
Asimov adds his flower and mushroom to the skelton key and together the 3 items that make up the key work on the key hole. When they touch the keyhole in the lattice with the key the lattice disappears it fades away, leaving an open arch and the key is combined into a single object which is an amalgamation of the bonekey, the force flower and the mushroom. A wind whistles through the void the lattice left and the Mindoses turn around seeing the party.

The leader dwarf seems to recoil at the sight of the key held in Cyrion and Asimov’s hand but the other 10 dwarves snap into action and move across the void and through the arch landing on the ledge with the party.
2 of the Dwarves attack Mundhi with unarmed strikes and both miss.
1 of the Dwarves attacks the Twins and miss as well
1 attacks Cyrion and hits with a punch (19vs AC; 9 damage)
2 Dwarves attack Zeoll and miss
2 Dwarves attack Irony and miss
2 Dwarves attack Asimov and miss

As the party goes to take the initiative the cords on the heads of the Mindoses snap back and they are propelled backwards through the arch to their respective ledge with Lady Femmu.

The Twins raise an eyebrow at the fairly ineffective attack. They position themselves between the Dwarves and the arch so the others can put the key in and ready an attack against any dwarves that try to stop them. 44 to hit, 21 damage.

The Twins ready and attack against the Mindoses and kill it
Elron prepares to grab one of the dwarves if they attack again planning to hitch a ride over to the Dwave’s ledge but fails to grab onto one.
Cyrion looks down at where the Dwarf hit him and reflects on how he has another dent to be fixed. He then asks who yanked the Dwarves back and then brandishes the key at the lead dwarf
Zeoll hits the Mindoses with a confusion spell confusing 8 of the 11 dwarves
Mundhi hits one of the Mindoses with a rock for 33 damage
(OOC: to use the rope in that way make a CMB roll)
Asimov sees the dwarves lined up and hits them with an electromagnetic charge emitter 5 fail their saves, 6 make them.
Irony slams one of the Dwarves as they make their way over. As Irony crosses the archway a cord appears on the constructs head
The lead dwarf attacks the 2nd dwarf and misses.
The second dwarf hurts itself in its confusion
The 3rd dwarf also attacks the 2nd dwarf
The 4th dwarf was knocked out by Mundhildur’s rock and the lightning
The 5th dwarf was knocked out by Irony’s slam and Asimov’s electricity
The 6th dwarf travels across on the cord and attacks Elron missing. Elron also misses his attempt to grab onto the 6th dwaf
The 7th dwarf babbles incoherently

"Lady Femmu - are you able to effect the healing that they want you to do?" Mundhildur calls forth. "If so, ask the dwarfs if they want to stop fighting, and let you try it. Afterwards, we can leave together. I don't want death to multiply, but I'll take action if they keep attacking."

As they all look rather befuddled at the moment, and at least three are down, the giantess does not attack this round - although, if one jumps across to attack her again, she will see about grabbing hold and riding back on an attacking dwarf. CMB: 19

If that works, on the far side she will drive a spike into the ground with a hammer (Attack 18) in lieu of attacking a dwarf, and hang on to the spike to keep from getting dragged back to her starting point.

The Twins are incredulous. "No, we should not free" "Whatever mad god is imprisoned here!" "They attacked us" "The time for diplomacy is ended."

Seeing as the dwarves keep charging them they decide against the bow and prepare another attack as soon as the enemy enters range of their sword. 38 to hit, 19 damage.

A) Cyrion will ask the Twins, "Is your sword keen?" If the answer is no, then he'll touch it and use his Sharpened Edge to make their sword Keen for 120 minutes

If their sword is keen then he'll draw his blade and prepare to protect himself should any of the dwarf's try to attack him

And since he doesn't remember them actually opening the door that might stop the rope from doing so, he preps to properly whap the next dwarf that swings over.

The Twins are adamantly opposed to waking a mad god and reasons since the Dwarves attacked first the time of diplomacy is over.
Cyrion asks The Twins if their blade is keen and prepares to enchant it
Elron concurs with the Twins’ assessment on the mad god and prepares to whap the next dwarf that makes its way across.
The Twins respond that their blade isn’t keep so Cyrion psychically enchants it
Asimov and Irony fly for the ledge with Lady Femmu and the Dwarves. As they step / fly out the cords reappear above both their heads and both swing over.
Asimov is unable to get a good grip on Lady Femmu but Irony the Mechanical Minion grabs on
The lead dwarf tries to break Irony’s hold on Lady Femmu (19 vs Irony’s CMD = fail)
The second dwarf babbles incoherently
The third dwarf also tries to break up Irony and Femmu and succeeds (28 vs Irony’s CMD = success)
The fourth dwarf stabilizes
The fifth dwarf also stabilizes
The sixth dwarf babbles incoherently
The seventh dwarf hurt itself in its confusion
The eighth dwarf attacks Irony and misses with a natural 1

Mundhi extends to max height and heads across the chasm to rescue Lady Femmu.She wraps arms and rope around their healer friend and starts to head back with her in tow.
The Twins swap out their bow and ready to shoot at any Dwarf who tries to stop Mundhi from bringing Femmu.
Elron doesn’t want to try a ginormous leap to another platform so he prepares for an attacker to come to them and intercept it
Zeoll hastes his friends
Cyrion moves up and prepares to psychically blast the next dwarf to move towards him
Asimov and Irony move with Mundhi to the other side trying to interfere with any Dwarves that would try to break Mundhi’s grip on Femmu

The lead dwarf attacks dwarf 2 but misses.
The second dwarf does nothing but babble incoherently
The third dwarf also attacks the second dwarf and critically hits for 21 damage, slaying the second dwarf
The fourth dwarf is unconscious
The fifth dwarf is unconscious
The sixth dwarf goes to break up Mundhi and Femmu but gets hit with the twins arrow and Irony’s slam slaying it.
The seventh dwarf also tries to interfere with Mundhi but gets hit with Asimov’s wrist rockets and gets knocked out
The eighth dwarf hurts itself in its confusion
The ninth dwarf attacks the 8th dwarf and knocks it out
The tenth dwarf is pining for the fjords
The eleventh dwarf hurts itself in its confusion

Mundhi, Asimov, Irony, Cyrion are all propelled back to their ledge by the cords that formed between their heads and the arch when they crossed it.

The party is now on the ledge with Lady Femmu. All the dwarves are still on their ledge.
The lattice has dissolved when you used the key leaving an open window effectively to the tower outside, the only problem is you are so high up.
Is it time for a leap of faith?

Mundhi suggests they leave this place now that Lady Femmu has been returned to their side. She offers to bring Lady Femmu before taking a quick look down and leaves ropes for the rest of the party to use if they need to telling the others they are headed down.

The party makes haste to put as much distance as themselves and the Tower as they can. When you get beyond the mists where the Mindoses ran threw the party and sang their song you notice that it is about mid morning.

Asimov and Irony are mostly free of their curses. Though one lingered on each of them.

Irony makes his save to resist needing to hop when talking as he says to his mistress, "You've changed."

Asimov feels his or rather her chest and how he or rather she has become rather buxomy then loosens her belt so she can take a quick glance down at her private bits without exposing herself to everyone before tightening the belt again and says to Lady Femmu, "Something isn't right. I'm not a man anymore. You have to cure me as you are a healer."

Mundhi loses all her cursed conditions (OOC: yes the last failure of the tower turned you greedy but you stopped as soon as you saved to resist it becoming permanent)

Asimov comes to grips with her sudden gender change and freaks out asking Lady Femmu to cure her.

Femmu says to Asimov, "I'll see what I can do for you later, but right now you aren't injured just more in touch with your feminine side. Which if you'd ask Mundhi or me is nothing to panic about. We aren't that far from the tower and I'd rather not be re-kidnapped again so can we continue to put distance between ourselves and the Mindoses please"

Mundhi tells Elron that he was amazing and congratulates him on his flying. She suggests they camp and she cooks creating a nice little meal for the party.
Zeoll decides to accept the tattoo.
Asimov tries to find a decent place for the party to spend the night. She says that Irony can stand guard all night but they can still have watches if need be. She then asks Lady Femmu if there is anything she can do now.

Femmu says to Asimov, “I did not prepare Break Enchantment or Remove Curse but tomorrow I can pray for up to 5 remove curses and 4 break enchantments if need be but for now I have the ability to draw your curse out of you and potentially in to me unless I am skillful in my attempt or resist the effect.

Femmu touches Asimov, takes a deep breath and then concentrates on her healing ability (Heal: 43 >= 24 + 10 = no risk of Femmu being effected by the curse)
The curse on Asimov breaks and he is back to his old self. His chest flattens and things go to the way they were before the tower.
A pleasant meal is had by all and Femmu agrees to prepare remove curse / break enchantments for those that need them besides Asimov who is now free from the curse the technomancer carried out of the tower.

Statements are made, questions are asked and curses are lifted. The party has a quick breakfast and breaks camp efficiently.

To Mundhi Femmu says, “It is a healer’s duty to first do no harm, then heal as consent allows.”

To Cyrion Femmu says, “If you remember I was rescued from the prison colony by your party after defeating the underground creatures. On our way back to your Dani a Dwarf and a Tiger staged a combat against each other in order to ambush you and steal you away. They succeeded but you tracked them down and rescued me in the Tower and now we are here.

To Elron Femmu says, “I’d have to examine the child but her condition sounds similar to a patient’s that I’ve helped in the past. I wouldn’t know what special items we may need or what her diagnosis is without first examining the girl. What was the remedy’s recipe? Give me that and once I have a diagnosis I could probably tell you.”

The party travel another day without incident. You find a nice clearing to camp the night in. What do you do?

The very tall lass stands up, her good-sized wool blanket over her shoulders and held closed by her hands to the front. "Well, we have encountered a lion, a duplicitous dwarf, then several more annoying dwarfs who kidnapped one of us. We came across very strange plants, and glowing things, and cliffs, and other oddities. However, I think that most potential opponents have given us a wide berth, so I don't know that as of yet we can present ourselves as having a great deal of expertise in the area of local fauna, or of others who might oppose us to a greater degree. We could tell you many stories of encounters in other areas, but are, frankly, fairly new around here.

"How about you?" she asks. "Would anyone like some carrots, apples, cheese, bread, or some good water? It being the middle of the night, we do not have anything in the way of warm drinks. And you can tell us more about yourselves." She looks at a few cranky friends. The giantess turns back to the centaurs. "Sorry for a semi-rude welcome. We have gone through a few rough days. My name is Mundhildur." She takes out of her bag the food items she mentioned, and adds in some in addition, offering a bunch of grapes, and some celery.

"Oh, and you mentioned news?"

Mundhi explains what they encountered and offers some further refreshment before introducing herself properly and asking of the news.

The Taurs had previous introduced themselves as Acteos (male) - Thumb, Panenos (male), Elinos (male), Egile (female) and Adeira (female)

Acteos further explains they are with the Mailed Fist and their contract is to hunt monsters and investigate and hopefully curtail the increased monster activity in the area.

The news is rather mundane. Local weddings of lords and ladies, upcoming festivities that kind of thing.

The night passes uneventfully with a bat swarm passing by around 2am but the large presence of creatures around the campfire keep them at bay.

The monster attacks in the area that increase haven’t been limited to a single race but various kinds. Some folks reported lycanthropes, others plant monsters, other lizard folks and others goblin kin.

Day dawns and the 5 Mailed Fist centaurs prepare to head on their separate way.

[I keep on managing to accidentally delete my posts before cementing them for Mundhildur. Let's try again.]

The Jotunar remained awake following the arrival of the five centaur members of the Mailed Fist. She attends closely to the stories and news they have to offer, asking clarifying questions, or requesting additional background from time to time. She shares in the tea that Cyrion prepares. After 60-90 minutes of conversation, she stifles a yawn, apologizes, then suggest that all get some rest.

In the morning she expresses gratitude to Asimov for having prepared the evening meal the day before. She cooks breakfast for the gathered crew, adding whatever the centaurs may have offered to include in the meal as well. She thanks Acteos, Panenos, Elinos, Egile, and Adeira for letting them know some of what has been going on lately in the area, and tells them again that she wished she and her friends had more to share with them news-wise. She does add, "Oh, and I forgot to mentioned we visited the Tree of Boydos, back that direction," and she points back along the path they took. "Beware of the dwarfs. Pesky ones, I declare."

Once the Mailed Fist equine troop leave, she gathers up materials designed to increase security around their encampment, stowing most of them in her bag. "Which way now?" she asks the party. "What is the fastest way for us to get back to Dani?"

[Regarding Cayzle's notion of going on hiatus until Elron can again contribute to the party, I'd be fine with that. What do others think?]

The Twins defer to some of the other party members as their might be faster ways across than merely fording the river

Zeoll thinks finding a ford is a swell idea and tries to help find one. He even offers Lady Femmu a ride on his back when he does.

Mundhi takes stock of the situation. The river is fairly wide at this crossing maybe 40 feet across. The river appears to be at least 10 feet deep if not more once away from the shallows, you'd have to do some kind of sounding to get a better idea. There currently is not a breeze. The river's flow is fairly steady a strong swimmer might be able to stand up to it but an amateur would probably get swept away. Along the far side there are some trees. The landscape is kind of forested. There is brush and underbrush and trees and grass and fungi and leaves and fallen logs. She offers to some how get a rope to the other side then ferry people across using levitate

Asimov offers Irony, jetpacks and portal guns

Between the parties unique skills they are able to make their way across the river without needing to find a different point to cross and without even getting wet. Asimov and Irony are able to set up a rope that the levitating giantess can easily get the others across with.

The party continues on their journey. As the sun is dipping in the sky they approach a roadside inn. smoke extends from the chimney and the smell of baked bread, cooked meat and vegetables and even something sweeter wafts from the establishment.

As the party gets closer to the inn they can see it isn’t alone. There is a stable connected to the inn but larger than a modest inn would need. However connected to the stable on the other side is a fortified looking building, perhaps some sort of barracks and next to that is a sort of watchtower.

The party enters the inn. The boniface (another word for innkeep - yay Jeopardy) greats you warmly. He’s a portly balding man with a bushy black mustache. “Welcome to the Goose and Granite, probably the safest, most secure inn in these parts. Well probably the only inn in these parts” he says with a laugh.

“People thought I was daft building out here but I knew adventurers would come to pass and when there are no adventurers, the militia still need to eat. In fact I only had to modestly contribute to the construction of the stables considering the militia has their own mounts so I get a few stalls in case I have guests with mounts and the militia gets the rest.”

The common room glows warmly with the fire from the hearth. Besides the Inn Keep there is a bar maid cleaning glasses at the bar. In a table in the corner a few men in armor sit playing some card game and drinking their drinks (the militia perhaps)

Aside from that the place is mostly empty and there are plenty of tables to choose from.

Mundhi gives the innkeeper a compliment and places her order and further inquires as to if the innkeep has scrumpy.

Asimov takes the inn keep on the offer of something stronger and sees about a whiskey on the rocks with beef stew and soda bread

The inn keep takes Mundhi's compliment in stride, "I take it you are no stranger to venturing yourself, fair lady. As for Scrumpy or Rough Cider, aye, I have some but surely someone with refined tastes as yours would prefer a vintage made with apples selected for their sweetness"

It would appear the inn keep responded favorably to Mundhi's complement and is now complementing her in kind.

The party takes seats and it isn't long before the drink and food orders are served. The miliitia members continue to play their card game ordering more drinks as time goes on.

After filling the drink orders and delivering them to the party the bar maid goes back to cleaning glasses.

As time draws on a few more militia members enter the dining room and order food, drink or food and drink.

The twins take off their armor, clean it and then go to bed

Zeoll suggests they set watches and takes the first shift patrolling the hall also suggesting folks leave their doors ajar lest they come this far to lose the healer again

Cyrion doesn't need sleep so he takes a position downstairs

Asimov offers Irony's services as a guard and defers to Zeoll and Cyrion as to his minion's placement. The stand guard abilty allows Irony to act and not go inert when Asimov is resting. As the tinkerer needs understurbed rest to prepare devices he isn't one for watch but Irony can go all night being a construct.

The party sets a watch. Some are in their beds. Zeoll is patrolling upstairs, Cyrion and Irony are downstairs. It is maybe 15 minutes before closing time. The bar has thinned out of most of the militia save for a pair sitting at the bar drinking ale from tankards and the four guys in the corner playing cards who were originally in the bar. The barmaid has been dismissed and the innkeep stands behind the bar this time cleaning glasses

The door opens and 5 pale figures enter the bar. 4 of them appear to be gruff men while the 5th and last to enter is a beautfiul raven haired woman that the 4 men seem to defer to.

She speaks and says, "Normally we wouldn't be able to enter an establishment such as this but your mat said welcome to all. My boys and I are thirsty and have stopped in for a drink."

The barkeep replies, "All are welcome ma'am. What can I get you? ale? wine? cider? mebbe something stronger? Though you must be quick in placing your order fer its almsot closing time."

She says, "Actually we prefer blood."

The innkeep then says in a voice that seems kind of devoid of emotion, "Right away mistress"

The militia members turn around to face the newcomers. They all go to reach for their weapons but 4 of them immediately drop them. The two at the bar and 2 of the card players.

Mundhi gets some stones from her bag and tells Femmu they are being attacked by vampires and they should descend and turn them to dust

Irony slams into the nearest vampire this being the man. It seems like Irony does less damage than he should have

Asimov gets out of bed and moves into the Hallway asking Zeoll what he knows about vampires as he does.

Two of the vampires dominate the other 2 militia members so all the militia members and the barkeep are dominated.

The one that Irony attacked seems to heal slightly as he attempts to slam back at the minion only to miss.

The raven haired beauty turns invisible.

The Twins climb out the window and down to the ground floor

Mundhi throws stones at 2 of the strange men

Asimov hits another with wrist rockets from the top of the stairs while Irony makes another slam

None of the damage the vamp men sustain are enough to incapacitate them and aside from Asimov's wrist rockets it looks like they shrugged off a little of the attacks made by stone and slam

The vampires direct the soldiers and barkeep to act as human shields from future range attacks using their dominate ability

From seemingly out of nowhere 2 fiery rays strike Irony for 15 and 10 damage

The vampire are taking cover behind the barkeep and soldiers they have commanded to become human shields. Any ranged attack aside those that hit unerringly (like magic missile) have a chance to hit the militia or the barkeep. Irony is in melee range of the vamp men.

The twins are outside the inn. Zeoll and Femmu are upstairs. Asimov is on the staircase. Mundhi and Cyrion are in the common room.

Then Zeoll moves halfway down the stairs so he can see what is going on.

Then he starts singing to inspire courage in his allies.

Then the bear charges the mearest foe! He reaches out with a claw and hits AC27 for 9 damage. More importantly, he gets a free grapple, and he rolls with success against a CMD 24. If that works, the enemyt is grappled!

The twins move around the inn and fire at the vamps from behind the open door hitting the first vampire with all 4 arrows which don't seem to sink in as far as they should but still damage it enough to incapacitate

This causes 2 of the militia members to break free from their confusion and they flee the inn presumably headed for the barracks as the vampires were too much for them.

Zeoll unleashes his grizzly bear into the fray and then moves to the stair and starts singing to inspire his allies

The grizzly bear hits the second vampire man with a claw and immediately gets into a grapple situation

Cyrion engages vamp man 3 and hits him twice, although his sword doesn't do as much damage as expected it is still enough to incapacitate him, breaking another militia member out of the domination and causing him to flee out the door

Asimov and Irony target vamp man 4 and incapacitate him which frees another militia member who also retreats

Vamp Man 2 attempts to turn the grapple around on the grizzly bear but fails (17 vs CMD)

From seemingly out of nowhere again 2 red rays shoot forth and this time target the twins (20 vs touch; 13 vs touch) 1 ray flies wide but the other ray hits dealing 16 fire damage

The Good Hope affects the Twins, Mundhi, Cyrion, Asimov, and the Bear.

With Inspire Courage, that means +4 to hit and damage, +2 on all saves, skill checks, and ability checks.


(Sorry Irony, you are immune to morale bonuses, right? But you and Zeoll still get the +2 on attacks and damage from Inspire Courage. That's a competence bonus.)

G-Bear continues to maul his foe. If I am reading the Grab Monster Ability Rules correctly, he can make a grapple check to pin, and if he succeeds, also automatically inflicts paw damage.

G-Bear's grapple check (at +4 with Zeoll's buffs) is a +13+4 = +17, and he rolls a 25. That should beat the vamp's CMD, since a 24 worked last round. That pins the vamp and inflicts 13 hp damage.

Mundhildur thinks there is someone she cannot see in the fight. She noticed a couple of red rays shooting at or just past the Twins. She follows the line of the rays. Reaching into her bag, she pulls out a jar of flour. Following along the pathway indicated by the rays that flashed by, she begins quickly and aggressively casting large handfuls of white flour into the air, left, right, and straight ahead, trying to see whether some of the white powder lands upon whoever, in an invisible state, is shooting magical rays at her friends.

The invisible voice calls out as the spell is dismissed revealing the Raven Haired Beauty clinging upside down on the ceiling, "I guess you got the better of us. Lucky for the residents here you happened to be passing through when you did or else this would have gone very differently. Still then a promise is a promise." She drops from the ceiling affected by feather fall and says, "I guess my children and I are on a strictly animal diet now."

She snaps her fingers and the 3 remaining dominated hostages are released.

"It will take about a minute for my less wounded children to revive and then between the two of them and some wolves I'd like to summon I think I can get my two more wounded children on the road and out of your business. Is this acceptable? We will no longer attack noble and ignoble races for sustenance and go in peace as agreed?"

Within a little time two of the Vampire Spawn have regenerated enough to stand and a small wolf pack arrives. The two more heavily injured spawn are put on makeshift stretchers using fallen tree limbs, bedrolls and rope and between the wolves and the other spawn coordination made to carry them.

The parade of vampires and wolves disappears into the night.

The innkeep says, "She was right in her observation if you weren't here when you were that would have gone a lot differently. I need to change doormats I think. Considering the vampires took the saying on it to be an invitation."

Together the innkeep and militia men ask, "How can we ever repay you?"

It is just after what would normally be closing time. The encounter with the vampire sobered up the remaining two militia men and they recover their weapons as well as the weapons dropped by the other militia men that fled to the safety of the barracks when released from the mind control.

The Twins think they should have a big party first thing in the morning

Zeoll tells the barkeep it is all in the day's work for an honest adventurer with no other thanks needed except maybe a drink after that battle

Cyrion says that he likes the diplomatic approach but the fighting was fun however his sword wasn't as effective as he thought it would be and suggests he get it checked out

Asimov agrees on the drink and repairs the damage Irony suffered from the vampire's magic

The barkeep digs underneath the bar and comes up with a bottle filled with an amber liquid that appears to be woven from glass grass.

He says, "I've been saving this for a special occasion. The trader said it was Pomfrai from the Southern Continent."

He sets about putting down shot glasses for the party and himself and fills each one to the brim.

"Bottoms up" he says and downs his own shot

As you follow suit you realize the shot is very smooth and very tasty and that it would be nice to have more but then you realize despite only having a shot that your cheeks are numb as if you had been drinking for a while.

The barman says, "Pomfrai is very potent. I was told not to drink more than a shot from the merchant lest those that drank it run the risk of dancing naked."

"If there isn't anything else I will be seeing you fine folk in the morning. I don't know about a party but I can certainly cook a hearty breakfast that includes griddle cakes if you can wait a tad for me to cook it before moving on."

The rest of the night passes uneventfully and with the pomfrai to help you along you have no trouble falling asleep.

You wake to a symphony of delicious aromas.

True to his word the innkeep prepared a hearty breakfast with sausages, bacon, home fried taters, griddle cakes, maple syrup, biscuits, butter, jam, coffee, hot chocolate, orange juice, apple juice, milk, cider and even mulled wine.

He says, "Eat up my heroes." beckoning to the spread

The innkeep responds to Cyrion's compliment and says, "Thank you but as an Inn Keeper you have to be skilled in several areas of the hospitality industry."

With that the time has finally come to be away from the Goose and Granite and back on the road. You have another day's travel ahead of you but despite it being fall with the leaves turning orange and red and yellow and starting to fall it is an unseasonably warm day and a good one for traveling.

And so the party sets off once more for another day of traveling guided by Zeoll’s bearings.
The first half of the day is uneventful and you break at midday to partake of some provisions the innkeeper packed for you.
The second half of the day however is different. The terrain starts to become more difficult to traverse. While there is still a trail the forest is gradually turning into a swamp and the land on either side of the trail is often mud or water or muddy water.

As it gets later in the day you see a small building in the distance with a sign that reads “Flat Bottom Boat Rentals”

Q: How far might we travel by flat bottomed boat before you can continue walking

The half-orc says, “You don’t necessarily need to rent a boat as the trail more or less continues through the swamp, course at points the trail actually goes into the swamp so you might want the boat. With that being said it is a 3 days journey from this end of the swamp to the other. We have another boat rental shack on the other side so you could rent boats here, traverse the swamp and drop your boats off at the other shack when done.

Q: Are there any known hazards in the swamp?
The half-orc says, “Well there have been reports of strangely acting gators and possibly even some sort of half-man half-gator creatures but surely that must be swamp gas causing delusions no?

Q: Is there anything special we might want to do to prepare?
The half-orc asks “Do you want to set out now when it will be dark soon or would you rather make camp and leave in the morning?” if you want to set out now do you have light or some means to see if you want to travel at night? Regardless of when you setout do you have netting or some means to repel insects if you make camp in the swamp?

Q: Will someone accompany the boat with us?
The half-orc says, “For an additional fee either myself or my Pa will accompany you”

Q: how much weight will these boats handle?
The half-orc gauges the party and says, “between the metal men, the giantess and the liontaur you guys are probably going to need multiple boats.”

“The Taur could probably take a boat with a single person”

“One metal man could share a boat with a single person”

“The other metal man could share a boat with a single person”

“I suppose the fourth boat could take the remaining two people or one of us and two of yours if you opt in to pay for a guide”

The half-orc looks expectantly at you all. He seems to be expecting a big sale(from his perspective) from the party, How do you want to proceed?

He says “first off it is a 25 gold refundable deposit per boat so with 4 boats that would be 100 gold, which we would return to you upon reaching of the other end of the swamp minus any deduction for damage incurred during the trip”
He then says “second passage is 10 gold 8 silver pieces each for the Liontaur, and the two metal men. For the rest of you it is 5 gold 4 silver pieces”
He then says “third for the services of 2 trained guides for 3 days of work is 1 gold 8 silvers”
He totals that up and says “175 gold, 8 silvers with 100 gold being potentially refundable depending on the shape of the boats on the other side.”
He says, “We also sell mesh netting for 5 silvers per square foot now I don’t know about the metal men being impacted by the bugs but I’d say a 10 foot square of mesh would work for the liontaur and giantess with the non-metal men medium folk of your party getting away with 7 foot squares just to be safe.
He does some more figuring and says,
“So that is 175 gold, 8 silvers for the boats with guides with 100 of those gold pieces potentially being refundable depending on the shape of the boats on the other side and 20 gold and 5 silvers for the mesh netting assuming you want the mesh netting. Do we have a deal?”

Assuming Zeoll agrees considering the total came in under what he had to spend the half-orc calls out "Pa, we need to ready 4 boats. Also they want us both to come with them so we need to close the shop."

He says, "Do you want to set out now or wait till the morning?"

Mundhildur sees Cyrion nearly frozen in place on the boat. "Here, let's make this easier for you. I'm tieing two ropes to you so that you can go to either edge of the boat, but without enough slack to go overboard. Also, each rope has a quick-release knot to free yourself from the restraint should you need to. You stand on the left and push against the bottom with the pole to help us move forward, and I will do likewise on the right. We're getting too far behind the others, and the monster that grabs laggards may eat us if you don't help us catch up."

The boats continue like this for much of the morning. Once the party cleared the immediate area of the boat rental shack the water got deeper compared to the draft of the flat bottomed boats and the passage was fairly wide all things considered. With deep enough water, a lack of hazards and everyone polling fairly well you move relatively quickly as early morning turns to mid-morning and beyond.

It is between midmorning and noon when Xugarf calls back to the party, "This next bit of swamp up ahead is shallower and has some rocks and other hazards that could potentially damage boats if we aren't careful. We've been making good time so far but I'd recommend we slow a little and then when we are through there is an island nearby we could stop for a lunch break at if you want."

As you move through the narrow rocky part of swamp you first start to notice an abundance of logs in the water, first in front, then beside, then behind.

The Twins start singing a song they are familiar with

Zeoll starts singing to soothe the alligators. There are actually about 18 in total but the 12 closest are moved by his ability. He calls out that they are not food or threats but floating by in peace
Cyrion says all he sees are logs
Asimov says he sees the gators too and think Zeoll uses the right move

The 6 gators outside of the range of Zeoll's song hang back from the 12 were influenced by Zeoll's singing.

One of the 12 nearest gators replies to Zeoll, "That isn't what we were told. Some of us who can become like some of you told us we could get food if we waited here for the moving floating things with beings in them. However, you all seem really nice so maybe it was different moving floating things we can get food from?" it asks

The 12 gators Zeoll "soothed" are now visible as gators not logs since they seem actively interested in following the boat and learning more about this friendly singing felline-man creature and companions

The Twins sail along with the experts and plan to take queues from them. While the father and son pair look a little nervous as Zeoll and Mundhi sing to the gators and feed them berries they gradually relax

The gators respond to Zeoll's questioning

"Well the ones like us that can be like you come and go as they please. They are lead by the one known as Swamp-Maw. Some of Swamp Maw's followers were with us when your floating things started to drift by and they were the ones that told us we could find food with you but they broke off when the rest of us started to follow you with the singing. Swamp-Maw is big when in gator form larger than the rest of us and has a distinctive scar over his right eye at least when in gator form and in half and half form. We don't really see them when they look completely like you. They seem to be able to control what they look like and often times choose to leave the swamp looking like you but then when they come back they are either looking like us or half and half. They often rope us in to their plans especially when it comes to things in the swamp."

Xurgaf calls to the other boats, "Considering we picked up some company perhaps we skip the island lucnh and just eat under way. We are almost at the island and things will get less crowded after that so we'll be able to move at full speed again. However, if you want we can still stop at the island providing you can assure us it is safe to do so as you seem to have things well in hand with our fellow travelers as it were"

"Thanks, Cyrion!" Mundhildur pulls an apple out of her bag, and begins to eat it. When she gets down to the core, she tosses it over to a gator farther away than the rest.

Zeoll explains to everybody via message cantrip what the alligators said. There are were-alligators who know about us and who are enemies. The leader is named Swamp-Maw, who is big and has a distinctive scar over his right eye.

"We cannot ignorre this thrreat and just paddle on!" the liontaur protests. "As forr me, I'm calling in rreinforrcements!"

Zeoll asks the largest alligator to stay around for a short time and asks the other alligators to go about their business and hunt elsewhere.

If that works, he casts Charm Monster on the big one he asked to stay behind. The will save DC is 23. If that works, great. If not, Zeoll asks him to leave.

Then Zeoll uses his Fey Friend ability:

Fey Friend: As a spell-like ability, you use Planar Ally spells to call fey folk and magical beasts. This SLA takes one full round of singing to activate; there is no gold cost; and the duration is one minute per character level. The creature only appears if it likes your song: make a Perform (Sing) check vs DC20 + HD called. At level 5, use as Lesser Planar Ally, 1/day; at level 10, up to Planar Ally, 2/day; at level 15, up to Greater Planar Ally, 3/day.

He calls for a fey friend and hopes he'll get someone useful. The duration is just ten minutes, but he will use that time to ask for advice, and scout around and report back in case the fey learns anything.
Perform check 34 = up to 14 hit dice called.

Finally, he has Bill the eagle go aloft and keep watch for alligators, humanoiods, and anything in-between.

The liontaur reasons they cannot ignore the threat and paddle on and so he calls in reinforcements.
He has no trouble directing most of the gators to go about their business and hunt elsewhere nor convincing the largest gator to stick around
When he goes to cast Charm Monster The largest gator makes the save (25 vs 23) so he too goes on his way shortly after that

Zeoll uses his fey friend ability and ends up summoning a small fey that appears to have the chest and head of a halfling and the legs, tail and feet of a rabbit.

The Lemkin introduces it self as Rem and sets out to investigate the nearby area after giving Zeoll this advice

“If I want to deal with someone who is harming the local plants and animals I typically , send an endless stream of notes to that person carried by every kind of animal from mice to great brown bears. The notes will contain anything from poetry to silly insults to misleading directions. Once that person is thoroughly confused, I use ghost sound and ventriloquism to get them running in a random direction. Finally, I use hallucinary terrain to make sure that person is completely lost.

Although people were poling Zeoll's suggestion they do something about Swamp-maw sort of led to the boats stopping near a sand bar

Mundhildur figures it's a good time to eat a bit more. She passes around two loaves of bread and a couple pounds of cheese. Carrots. Apples. Turnips. "We need more meat."

If she can understand the advice Zeoll receives, she laughs. "No doubt that would do it for Swamp Maw."

She practices throwing stones up into the air and catching them. She starts two-stone juggling. She does okay, but occasionally misses one (Acrobatics 14 - don't know if that is the right skill to use for juggling, but it can't be too far off).

Taking the description of Swamp Maw, she looks around at times to see if anyone or anything resembles the fellow. Perception: 33

This is one of those times...

Zeoll Highlight to display spoiler: { Apparently were-gators breed like gators and not like a noble race. Female Swamp Gators lay large clutches of eggs on land often land that is muddy or has vegetation nearby that can be built up several feet around the egg clutch. It just so happens that this very sand bar was where Swamp-Maw was born a score or so of years ago.

Swamp-Maw earned his scar over his eye at a young age as an older actual gator attacked him hoping to make a meal of the young were-gator. The young were-gator knew he couldn't fight the actual gator as the actual gator was larger, faster and stronger but even from a young age Swamp-Maw was a cunning survivor. The larger gator charged swamp maw and even managed to take a chunk of swamp maw's hide giving Swamp Maw his distinctive eye scar but Swamp Maw won the war because there was a sharpened treebranch extending out of a log that Swamp Maw was aware of and when the real gator charged him, swamp maw turned the branch so that the actual gator impaled itself on branch and died.

Young Swamp-Maw the survivor decided after that that he needed to leave the swamp and learn how to use all his forms to his advantage. Swamp-Maw adopted his hybrid form for the first time in his life and used it to traverse the swamp and ultimately leave.

Things are a little unclear after that as Swamp-Maw had left the sandbar and the swamp but then one day more recently Swamp-Maw returns. He had maybe 2 or 3 other were-gators with him at this time. Together the 3 were gators assembled the gators and were-gators of the swamp around the sandbar that Swamp-Maw had been born at

Swamp-Maw addressed the were-gators and gators of the swamp and suggested life had been unfair to the gators and were-gators of the swamp as they were locked in a constant kill or be struggle between themselves and the other animals of the swamp.

Swamp-Maw said he had been to a city and learned things in the city, things about strategy and magics and skills needed for robbery and banditry, stealth, misdirection, ambush tactics, etc.

This swamp is near a major trade route and sometimes people take detours through the swamp to save time or go an unexpected way to throw off enemies or competitors.

Swamp-Maw figures life could be so much better for the were-gators and gators of the swamp if they banded together to raid wealthy traders traveling on or near the swamp.

In the swamps the gators and were-gators have strong advantages in their gator and hybrid forms but outside the swamp the were-gators could take their noble race form and attack the merchants moving on the nearby trade routes.

The gators and were-gators seemed 100% on board with Swamp-Maws idea to be a bandit king of the swamp and surrounding areas.

Zeoll gets one more vision of the sand bar and this too involves Swamp-Maw and it seems his were-gator lieutenants.

They were meeting on this very sand bar. Swamp-Maw in hybrid form, "It is obvious that someone has been talking to the local militia or the mailed fist. That last trade caravan was ready for us and we lost some good men for nothing."

"Or so it seems. However, their deaths will not have been in vain because only one of you knew of my plan to ambush that particular caravan. I knew we had a traitor in our midst and I decided to compartmentalize the information of our upcoming plans. I'd tell different lieutenants different details and when I found the caravan that had been forewarned of the plans that is when I knew I'd find the mole"

"Hard-scale how could you? You were my own son and yet you sold us out to these lesser beings who only have one form."

The identified "traitor" responds, "Maybe we don't have to be bandits? Maybe we don't have to live in the samp? We can control our forms, why not leave the swamp and have a normal life? Or if that isn't suitable take our gifts and become adventurers, you know helping people instead of hurting them."

Swamp-Maw says, "I thought I tought you better than this. The wold turned its back on this forsaken swamp. We were intended to fight amongst ourselves for scraps of food while others prospered. Even wnen I left the swamp and journeyed to the city I arrived essentially an orphan beggar

"I lucked out thoguh as the thieve's guild was interested in orphan beggars and so I augmented my natural gifts with the skills of a rogue, wizard and arcane trickster but it was really hard going for me, however I resolved to one day come back from where I hailed and improve things for those I felt a kinship with, the were-gators and gators of the swamp."

I'm sorry it has come to this HardScale but I can't let you live. Bring out the impaling Log!

It only took 10 minutes for Zeoll to receive his legendary visions and so Rem, Bill and Irony returned and reported what they had found

Aside from some of the gators Zeoll had charmed (whose teeth were stained with the good berry juices) there weren't any gators in the immediate vicintiy. It is as the charmed gators had said, the gators either were-gators or otherwise in-line with Swamp-Maw's plan had decided to give the party and their boats a wide-berth when it became known the group was adventurers and could do what Zeoll did.

If the party is going to want to go hunting for Swamp-Maw they are probably going to have to detour from their path to the other side of the swamp to go deeper in in search of swam-maw. Xurgaf and son's might not be on board for the detour considering it is more danger than they signed up for.

He obviously planned to ambush us with all those gators at the choke point but what he didn't know was that Zeoll could charm animals and that ruined his plan. I guess the question is does he think what we are carrying is worth a confrontation when he knows Zeoll can spoil one of his big advantages he usually enjoys? He might be happy to see us go on our way and thus return the swamp to its status quo where the gators are all fundamentally under his control or he might figure we are adventurers and decide to attack us in a different way as adventurers tend to be wealthier than the average person. If he doesn't attack us I say we mark this swamp and come back here after we save Daniella and if he does attack us then we try to end his threat once and for all"

Zeoll shares what he's learned from the legend lore

Cyrion listens to Zeoll's tale without an expression on his face. He figures Swamp-maw might be as wily as their group.

Mundhi asks if they go after Swamp-Maw or return to Daniella

The Twins reason that since Daniella's health was failing when they left they need to hurry back lest their quest prove pointless

Cyrion points out that Swamp-Maw will be there regardless so they should save Daniella and deal with Swamp-Maw if he shows up

Asimov reasons Swamp-Maw might not show up or at least not in the swamp considering Zeoll's ability foils much of his swamp advantage and that either he gives them a wide berth or attacks them a different way

Things kind of pause for a moment and it is Xurgaf who breaks the silence

"So then I take it we should get underway again yes?" I think we can make good time to a relatively dry island area where we can camp the night at. I mean it is only midday but with the distance we need to travel, typically we camp on that island the first night and we can still make it there with time to spare."

The party heads out and sure enough as the sun starts to set the boats approach the promised island

Asimov says, "I have my shelter capsule which can create a space for 9 other medium creatures besides myself; I guess that means Zeoll counts as 2."

(OOC: Functions as Tiny Hut and since I'm the DM when it says it can be any color you choose I choose the color night colored camo and the hut takes on a pallet of dark slate grey, fern green, green brown and charcoal)

"I can't leave the shelter once I create it but it would last for 24 hours if I didn't leave it but I figure we need less than that. I figure Femmu should shelter in the hut all night too since she is the person we have to get to Daniella, Xurgaf and Son as well as they are noncombatants so that leaves 6 spots in the hut with Mundhi, The Twins, Cyrion, Irony, Zeoll and Bill considered which puts us at 8 so that is 2 over. Irony can stay outside the Hut all night and stand watch so that puts us at 7 out of 6 so I guess some of you need to rotate in and out on watch with Irony. The hut will kind of blend in and some of it extends underground so I think between the spell and the spiked stones we will be pretty protected from Swamp-Maw should he come around now."

Asimov creates his hut kind of off the center of the island in a mostly clear area that can support the 20 foot radius hut. Sure enough the hut takes on a kind of camoflage for night coloration.

Zeoll agrees seeing Femmu to Daniela is their top priority and offers to use spike stones to help protect the island

The Twins argue they should press on and try to get out of Swamp-Maw's territory

Mundhi agrees they should stop on the island for the night and with using the spiked stones but leaving a trail the party could traverse to leave. She asks if anyone else brought food

Cyrion agrees with the Twins

Asimov agrees with Zeoll and Mundhi about the island and even offers to provide shelter using his shelter capture which he does set up. He stipulates though that there isn't enough room for everyone and he has to be inside or else the effect ends, Femmu as the VIP and Xurgaf and Son as non-combatants should also be inside so that leaves 7 people to go in 6 spots so that will need some kind of nightly rotation.

Xurgaf explains to the Twins and Cyrion that one can't simply poll one's was out of Swamp-Maw's territory as Swamp-Maw sees the entire swamp as his territory so the best they can do is do everything in their power to see the trip takes the 3 days esitmated. The first day of travel has been completed and you reached the island which is the first waypoint the boat rentals typically recommend stopping at for the first day of travel. There is another island similar in nature to this one roughly a day's travel through the swamp and if they do it right the end of the 3rd day would see them reach the Xurgaf's boat rental shack on the other side of the swamp.

The Alligator Congregation Halts before setting foot on the island being hailed diplomatically by someone who speaks their language

They say, "We were told someone was in our territory unwelcome by one we trust. He suggested we go to where the trespassers were and force them from the island they were occupying yet here you are being polite? Were we mislead?"

Zeoll gets the sense that the gators are no longer on the warpath and are instead friendly towards him

Apparently Swamp-Maw is still keeping himself and his were-gators away from the party for now. Perhaps he's experimenting to see how the party reacts with more normal gators in a different scenario?

Mundhi takes her pole and strikes a decent pace for her and Cyrion

The Twins realize they hadn't been paying attention previously and actually are fairly proficient with the pole so they power their boat strongly

Zeoll is currently the strongest poler while staying alert

Xurgaf and son produce a 3rd foldable pole and between the two of them and the Twins their boat takes the lead (32)

Femmu grabs her pole and helps Zeoll putting the two of them on the heels of Xurgaf, Son and the twins (31)

Asimov's lighter boat with a single passenger (22) is slightly ahead of Mundhi and Cyrion (22) but both trail the two lead boats by a bit

You end up in a situation where 5 of the gators are with Zeoll, Femmu, Xurgaf, Son and The Twins and 5 gators are with Asimov, Mundhi and Cyrion. Irony is kind of flying ahead of Xurgaf, Son, Twins, Zeoll and Mundhi

"Swamp Maw, there will be consequences," Mundhildur answers. She shifts to near the center of the raft, and grows to large size, taking care to maintain balance. "You will suffer defeat, for we have fought and bested greater than you. Back off, let us pass through, and perhaps you may see another day, and those with you can also live."

She ties one end of a rope onto something solid on the raft, something safe, able to hold a good amount of weight. The other end she loops around her waist.

She pulls out of her bag two throwing rocks, and has one in each hand.

The Jotunar is ready to levitate, and gives Irony warning. "Before I levitate, I will give you a very short warning - a fast count of one-two-three. In that time, you should try to get near the center of the raft."

The Twins draw their weapons and tell Xurgaf and Son they'll be protected

Zeoll starts singing a song to inspire courage

Cyrion touches a crystal and empowers some abilities

Mudhi answers a challenge of her own to the message carried on the wind

She prepares to levitate, tying a rope to part of the gondola and warns Cyrion to get to the center of the raft

Asimov offers that he has the ability to give everyone water breathing if they need it and tries to get Irony to land on board

All the boats are obscured by the fog cloud and none of the occupants can see beyond 5 feet

Zeoll and Femmu's boat slowly bump up against something solid blocking the way and Xurgaf, Son and Twins bump up against Zeoll and Femmu's boat.

Though Mundi's and Asimov's boats are in the fog cloud they were behind the other 2 boats going into the fog and since the fog cloud slowed the boats down they aren't yet where Zeoll and Femmu's boats are

Rather focusing now more on what might soon be happening - and positioning herself closer to the center of the raft, Mundhildur almost gives up on poling (survival: 12), making very slow progress indeed through the fog.

She much admires Zeoll's persuasiveness.

Mundhi focuses on poling much admiring Zeoll's persuasiveness
Asimov has irony assume an armor form around him

Sometimes miracles can happen and this time is one of them. The fog clears and you can see that the boats were up against an ice wall.

In the sky a giant gator says, "This is only an illusion. I Swamp Maw have been moved by your words and wish to parlay. I have removed the fog and have stopped what I was up to with the wall of ice and cloud kill. Where shall we meet to have this talk you suggested?"

The giant floating Illusionary Gator says, "I will wait for you there." before disappearing

Xurgaf says, "Well it will probably make things take maybe an extra day to day and a half but one way or another you folks are good for our wages so let's go"

The party finds itself moving in the opposite direction charted on a course past the island you rested on
towards the prophetic sandbar you dined on.

When the party reaches the sandbar they find a secure shelter has been cast upon it. A tall man wearing a fine cloak and ivory half mask stands outside.

He says, "Welcome to the sandbar. I took the liberty of preparing a place for our parlay as well as refreshment. There is charcuterie and fresh water. Please help yourself and we can have our conversation after."
