it takes a while. but you've all gotten your sea...sorry...grass legs by the end of it. The maiden passes by the closest shot to New Rattledam in order to head straight for it on the SW wind. it took the better part of 4 days to get here, but you see the hovels, tents, and a few new buildings on the horizon. There is even a small "dock" put up at the edge of the cleared area for you to tether to and to give you a place to get down to ground level.

Glad to be home Haemir suggests taking the guests to the council and showing them around.

Sol nods at Haemir's suggestions.

"Yes I think that would be wise, we can go and let them meet, then once our duty is discharged we can get some food that is not going to slip off the plate."

He smirks slightly, speaking affectionately, if jovially.

Rubalad continues to learn, ”Ah, so a ‘dock’ is a hitching post for a ‘ship’? Good to know!”

The small badger-kin doesn’t know the Rattledam skyline, but any scene of urban works makes him very excited. ”for a while, I imagined there was no place in this Sargrass that would look at all familiar. And you know the leaders of the place? That’s good. Do you know if they need anyone hunted down? That was my specialty in Plateau City.”

Rurik Ironjaw (Robert) | AC 19 | CMD 19 | 48/48 HP |

Rurik agrees with Haemir and Sol, nodding.

"Before we rest we must see our task done. We have brought the weavers, yes, but we must ensure they are properly acquainted with the town and the leadership thereof."

At Rubalad's question Rurik shakes his head.

"Not that I am aware of. As far as I understand it, this area is fairly isolated. The rest have more knowledge of this place than I do, however, and we can always ask the leadership ourselves."

There are no dockworkers and no one is around when you pull up. but a small delegation is coming from the town as it is noticed that you arrived. they make it to you by the time you have finished tying off. You see Freakshow and needle in amongst several members of the New Ratteldam counsel and about a dozen or some manual laborers come to help unload any provisions or trade goods from the ship.

The Master Weaver (whose name is Thorix Wundleson) and his apprentice (Bodile Wundleson) are greeted warmly by the delegation. Needle is included in the mix, it suddenly seems that folk is taking him a bit more seriously now.
Freakshow smiles at the group. he and one of the council members, Janessa Whiteridge both greet you.
Freakshow asks. Did you have a bit of trouble? we were expecting you several days ago. come on in to the town. we'll have a cool drink in the shade and talk about it.

Thank you, the drink and shade are much appreciated. The only real trouble we had was navigation, with the cloud cover recently we lost our way. We came across an odd area, with gigantic stalks of grass that pierced the heavens and a pool of water, and a great congregation of beasts. We also were waylaid by some great scorpions, although we fended them off into the wilderness, and so lost little time due to it.

Rurik gives Needle a smile and a nod as the group moves to the shade, graciously accepting a drink if offered.

“I am Rubalad of Amberdale, and I greet you as an equal in the Wold.”

When asked, he will again tell his story of tracking a criminal in Plateau City, accidentally activating a magic trap, and finding himself lost in a Sargrass storm until stumbling into the Maiden and the team.

Standing on the ground after days of tacking into the wind is odd. You keep feeling like you are standing on the side of a hill, and turning to face someone it feels almost as if you are going to fall over!

It's not enough to cause injury or clumsiness, just an odd feeling from being suck on a ship for days on end. The feeling slowly lessens as you make your way back to the city.

you also notice that near the floor it seems a bit warmer than up on top of the grass,

HaemirThorix and Bodile are happy to speak about weaving and knotwork in general. True Craftsmen and Artists that they are, they are also geeks for their profession, and willing to teach, learn or discuss anytime they get the chance.

Herbert it seems everyone knows your group. a delegation came out to meet you, and everyone seems keen to visit.

Elijah Freakshow is happy to tell you. well, A caravan has come to town! we stopped work on the dome, it was decided that if you couldn't find a weaver we would wait because it was going to block the evening breeze for no good effect.
[b]Torix
chimes in. Good call, knowing that you want to allow the breeze through I can put louvers in you can open up to catch the breeze.

Most of the Council members take their leave once you are back in town and past the guards. but Freakshow and Janessa take you to a grass hut that it a bit nicer than the rest. The rattan furniture is comfortable and the door is positioned to allow the breeze through. Indeed the hut is only partially roofed, it's more of an Al Fresco than an actual bar. it has the advantage of being a bit cooler than the rest o the area.

[b]Donald
and the rest of the crew take their leave from you as well. There is a bar more to their liking, across town. That's where you'll find us if you need us.

once you get settled with a glass of Chorle beer, Chorle bread and a nice bowl of Praire hen stew, to start. followed by a roasted hen with Chorle root, and a herb that tastes like rosemary, but just a bit sweeter.

DM note: this is a new town. new folks new traditions, new ways. some folk eat and talk, some folk only talk before and after meals. You feel you have the ability to influence that particular custom at this moment. but you have to reach a consensus for it to happen. vote down below and if it's unanimous, I'll update the wiki with it.

Herbert Bramblerose (Bill Soucy)
Friday August 13th, 2021 11:53:48 PM

Herbert revels in openness and having meals at communal style tables with much talking, sharing stories and singing. He also shares stories of the foods he was raised with, and is excited to try new and different food and drink.

Rubalad (SteveK) AC/T/FF 23/13/20 CMD 20 HP 52/52 Ruby

Rubalad gathers a platter of greens, some bread, and a large mug of fresh water. He adds a small bowl of hen stew and a chortle beer for politeness, but doesn’t do more than occasional tastes. He also acquires a hot plate to put a small fire and brings out of his pack accoutrements to prepare tea.

He too finds the open, communal style to his liking, but for other reasons than Herbert. He finds a half-filled table and sits, making introductions and observations of both where the Maiden Voyagers have done and seen, as well as inquiring about their lives and livelihood as well. If asked, he shares his preparation and tasting of the blackberry tea. In all respects, the badger-kin simply acts like any other of the Noble Races, and expects the same acknowledgement.

Sunday August 15th, 2021 10:07:38 AM

As the crew makes its way from the Maiden (with the council still present) Haemir suggests: "I think it's time we invite the Star Mages Guild n' of course any others willing to come. I mention them because we have a member here already" He gestures towards Sol. "and once they are here Sol will be able to travel anywhere his guild is for free, which will make importing easier. Also those with coin will be able to do the same. People will be able to visit family or even bring family. I think it is a logical step to pursue". Of course he is only suggesting, the council will make their own decisions.
"I have a contact in Zaran City that I can communicate with, I could have them write a letter and present it to the elderly gnome, Zalatsar, whom I believe who is the Zaran representative of the guild. The letter could be there today and with luck we could have a reply - or at least have opened up communication by tomorrow maybe"?

He'd offered to teach, guide, dreamwalk and much more so leaves the party to themselves and at the inn Thorix and Bodile have his attention. Haemir is not even aware that the group is being watched to see how and when to speak.. It doesn't even factor that they would look to the party for such matters since they hadn't been in the town long. He eats and chats (so I guess his vote is just talk and eat) with Thorix and Bodile discussing how different cultures had different styles of threads and weaving. He was starting to see how the different weaves told you about the weaver themselves, not just the purpose. You could achieve your goal with many different weaves, to him it felt like poetry.

Fand walks silently next to Sol. Her gaze keeps drifting to the wizard with a curious expression.

Rurik chats amiably with the people seated near him, about whatever topics are brought up. He doesn't venture forth any new topics of conversation, and keen to the eyes of others around him, alternates between talking and eating, never speaking with utensil in hand but not shying away from conversation at the table.

When Haemir brings up the Star Mages guild, however, Rurik speaks up as well.

"I'm not sure if we should be so quick to invite guilds to the area, I would not see this another work town under some rich merchant's fat thumb, in the pocket of another guildhall. I suggest we find some way to increase the military ability of the town, so that they have a means of defending themselves against both threats from the plains and any nefarious activity in town. No offence to the watch, of course, but I think given the circumstance something more substantial is required. We saw some rather large beasts out there, and I cannot imagine what would happen if a great number of them swept through the area, much less a coordinated attack from a more intelligent enemy. There will be time to build trade networks after the town is secured."

Haemir Has big plans. but it takes big plans to turn a village into a city. it gives the council woman something to think about at any rate. she asks do you really think it will be that easy?
one of the servers notices that Ruby seems to tend toward the vegetables and asks if he would prefer a salad instead?

The Wundlesons, show a few rope tricks while waiting for the food to come out.

the party has a really nice dinner and Freakshow mentions that you ought to check out the caravan tomorrow.
He asks if you are going to stay in town or go back to your ship for the night?
He notifies the Weavers that they have a place to stay, the town built them a hut to stay in while they are here.

The evening grows late, the beer flowed freely and folk start to yawn.

The city Council is happy to oblige with places to stay, As with most other buildings in the area they are grass huts, but they are nicely done grass huts. enough for everyone to have their own if they wish, but big enough for 3 or 4 to sleep comfortably in. They use hammocks here as on the boat. For heat like this it's better if the night air can circulate under where you are sleeping, the better to cool you. You are more than welcome to sleep on the floor if you wish though.

The discussion on getting the guild here takes a turn, Janessa sees the logic in Rurick's rebuttal.

The night passes uneventfully. and the morning comes like a blast furnace, making it impossible to sleep in very late.

what do the party do with the day ahead?

Rubalad is getting used to sleeping in a hammock, but has to adjust on to better fit his smaller size. After several weeks in the Sargrass, he is thankful that he has nearly stopped shedding his inner fur: it only takes a half hour of brushing to deal with his fluff! He apologizes to Rurik and any others who were sharing the grass hut. ”I think I only have my outer coat, much cooler and protective against sunburn.”, he comments.

Ruby will come out with just pantaloons and weapons, leaving his armor and other gear in the hut. Looking for Haemir, Herbert, Sol, and Rurik. He will accompany them on thier visits, and will ensure the walk includes a path around the caravan traders.

the party makes themselves useful and works on skills this day.

Haemir follows the weavers around and gets some pretty neat pointers on how to weave, enough for a house? maybe not yet, but with some persistent study you think it might be fairly easy.

Sol is on a quest to found a Star Mages guild, the City council is down with that, but they know of no Star Mages present in New Rattledam. You can write letters but since the Maiden is going to be the one carrying them...it's kind of wasted effort...but you do you.

Rurik, finds that while there are some city guards, it's a rotating position with all members of New Rattledam having to take a turn or in some way support the city guard effort. it's a new community in the wild, the thought is to have everyone proficient with arms should trouble arise. it's easy to find a sparring match, but you are underwhelmed with the quality of "guard" that you sparred with. To be fair, she runs a sewing shop and only does this once a month. she's game though, what she lakes in skill she makes up for in spirit. Her partner is one of the dockhands who unloaded the boat. he's not much better, he holds a spear as a pitchfork and has no idea of any other strike with it besides "thrust" . They are both aware of their lack of martial prowess, but look at their job as more to ring the alarm and keep folk honest rather than brawl.

[b]Ruby[b]. you face quite a bit of discrimination. small, furry and cute as you are, folk want to pet you and are enchanted by you when you talk. ladies especially. you haven't had to buy a meal yet. because someone always has the tab, and kids follow you around like dogs. it is discriminatory, but kind of in reverse. they have never seen a badgerkin before and you are new and unique. maybe it will die down in a few days.

You find that most folks are at the caravan, trading and buying goods. you hear a crier from the caravan extolling folk to come to the Chautauqua tonight to learn things and get news of the world. it's scheduled for late in the evening at sundown. folk are urged to bring a dish, drinks will be served. Attendance is free but donations are appreciated and all proceeds go to the Church of Serenbeth, the patron of families.

He does, however, listen with rapt attention to all the news, writing down anything and everything of import to refer to later.

Rubalad isn’t very tolerant of the larger races trying to make him a pet. ”Beastfolk are equal, my mind is the same as you.” “How would you like it if I pet and made baby noises at you?” Stop it!”. Each time, the badger-kin gets a little more short, until he all but growls the last retort.

Ruby is in a foul mood. He refuses to let anyone pay for him, even leaving money on the plate if not accepted any other way.

Soon, he finds himself over in the Guard training area with Rurik, seeking to work out his frustrations on the pells.

Haemir takes the letter that Sol wrote back to his room. (Coven 1 - members of a coven can commune with other coven members on the same plane once per day for up to one hour through a cauldron). He activates it and speaks with Galdysa Fizzlestitch (the gnome he recruited in Zaran city). He reads out the letter and asks her to write it her end and deliver it to Zalatsar (another gnome and the Star Mages Guild rep there). He advises he will contact her tomorrow for feedback and chats with her a while.

People had been coming to New Rattledam in droves, after all when Haemir left here three years ago there was about 30 people now it's in the hundreds. They had made their own way here despite being advised it was dangerous and despite being warned away by the Sentinels. People would come if they wanted anyway. The Star Guild could send them home or bring fresh weapons, guards, food, resources... It made no sense not to instigate it. The infrastructure needed support.

Later he attends the Chautauqua (donating some coins and bringing drinks he purchased in Zaran).

ah...Chautauqua the TED talk of the ancient world. there is news first.
A new fledgling town is making a go of it to the west. last they were there it seems to be doing well and they have finally gotten past subsistence and now have goods to trade.

the rain and cloudy conditions have resulted in a 30% decrease in Rapkey attacks in the last month.

A group of brigands has been attacking traders, they attacked the Caravan but were killed to a man.

next comes the talk. first, there is an invocation by a priest of Serenbeth. it takes about 10 minutes. the priest is a good orator, and you kind of wish he would have spoken a bit more.

next up is the speaker for the night. Hubert P. Stumwhistle. A naturalist here to talk about the bounty of the Sargrass. strange fellow. at least 7 ft tall and probably the most massively built man you have yet to see. Perhaps he has some hill giant or Orc in his ancestry. Large hands, but he puts a pair of delicate gold spectacles on before reading from some prepared notes he has made.
he talks of Chorly, and all the other grasses you know about. Purple, glass, Steel as well as others that are rarer. Hemp, for strong ropes. sugarcane that can be found around some of the more permanent water bodies. there is also a small flowering bush that puts out a tuft ball that can be carded and spun to make thread and fabric, like cotton, but the threads are much longer than regular cotton, so it has great commercial value, so far he has not been able to cultivate it. tests are ongoing though.
He has only been able to explore the plains for a year or two, but he feels that its bounty can benefit all.

his presentation is well recieved, it' give folk hope that then have potiental in this sea of grass.

Heamir gets in touch with his recruit and gets a message sent. she tells you she should get a reply back in a couple of days.

Ruby works his frustrations out sparring with the guard. from them at least you earn a measure of respect.

Sol spends time with his friends at the Chautauqua.

The family-style feed is pretty darned good. and not a dish is skipped by the patrons. no leftovers from this feed that's for sure. except for the green gelatinous thing with white flecks in it.. nobody touchs it.

Rubalad is interested to know more about the town where he has landed, and asks many questions. Why is it called Chautauqua? Are there only two towns in the whole Sargrass? What is a Rapkey and how dangerous are they?

The badger-kin tries to demonstrate his more civilized skills by brewing tea outside his shared grass hut each evening, taking the time to explain the process, the tools, and the leaves used. He supposes that soon he will need to know Sargrass herbalism for more native teas.

Ruby also approaches Haemir. ”You once offered to cast a spell where I could send messages to my family through their dreams. How does that work? Can they answer back? How do they know it is a real message?”. The Tracker would like to accept the offer,

"I'm a dreamweaver, It works like this. I place you into a trance, it's like a relaxing sleep, if the person you want to speak with is asleep then it starts immediately, if not we wait a while... Then I weave your threads together and you appear in their dream, but sorry they can't reply. Usually it's like they half wake up, maybe they realise it's not a dream anymore and they just listen. In the morning they remember everything you said. So you can let someone know you're safe n' tell 'em where you are. Ask for help or whatever you wish. Your time with them can be completely private". He realised "here" wasn't much help but explains "Simply let me know if n' when you're ready for a dreamwalk, I will be honoured to be your guide for once".

Sol enjoys the talks, and sees if he can catch up with Mr Stumwhistle afterwards to see what he's attempted to cultivate the different grasses where he's attempted it, and Sol makes notes in his diary, as he often does. He writes down everything Stumwhistle shares, and a few notes on theories of his own as to why it's not working. Not that he has any skill in that mind, but he's generally a decent problem solver.

Rubalad has questions: Why is it called Chautauqua? Are there only two towns in the whole Sargrass? What is a Rapkey and how dangerous are they? He brews tea and has a question for Haemir.

The hall is named after a legendary institute of learning. As for the villages and towns of the new Sargrass, who can say how many have popped up, or where? But of course, in addition to New Rattledam, you know that both Climbers and Manfri have communities. You might expect beastfolk to have the same, though you have not yet found any. And now this new village.

[OOC: Of course Ruby has met Thorondir and his animal companions, one of which was a small rapke. Your kindly DM assumes you recall that.]

Rurik mulls the presentations over. No questions at the moment.

Haemir also asks about the new new town and interacts regarding his passion for plants. He answers Ruby.

Sol joins Haemir talking with Stumwhistle in a floral discussion.

The sage of sage (and other herbs) has a lot more to say, though he did not expect others to be all that interested. "I had kept my talk short because usually folks start to nod off or leave after ten minutes."

Stumwhistle says that the unusual water pattern has seen a lot of unusual plants growing here.

"I've seen jariola bushes, elanor, uilos, and even aliantha, commonly called treasure-berries."

The obsessed naturalist is glad to engage you all, and invites you to his residence for more conversation.

The badger-kin will accept a dream walk to tell his family he is OK at the next opportunity.

Ruby glances at Rurik as Haemir and Sturmwhistle go talking plants with real humor in his eyes. ”That may take a while. There may be a bounty on bandits, or some other information. Would you like to come with me to look things over, Rurik?”

He roams about New Rattledam looking for more information.

Haemir seems fine with a long chat and visit with the sage, but prefers his own wine to the offered tea.

Rubalad makes a mental note to use that dream walk to send word to his family. But before that, he invites Rurik to leave the florists to their flora and to take a look around to see what's shaking.

Rurik is glad to join Ruby. [OOC: Please do roll a Diplomacy / Gather Info check.]

The obvious answer is that this new presence of free water is seen as a really big deal. People wonder how long it will last, and if it is a good omen or a danger. There's a rumor of unusual wildlife starting to come into the area too. A better roll from Rurik may reveal more.

Sol sticks with Haemir and Stumwhistle. He is looking for practical information.

Stumwhistle serves Sol his most tasty tea, and sips a little taste of Haemir's wine if it is offered. He expresses the belief that these new water-loving plants should be harvested and exploited as soon as possible, in case the situation changes.

The evening ends with Stunwhistle saying he was heading out to harvest in the morning. He does not explicitly invite you, but you have a DC0 Sense Motive check to detect that he would welcome company.

You meet back up to compare notes before turning in. The morning dawns bright and clear, just like pretty much every day.

After his talk with Stumwhistle and Sol (in the early hours of the morning), as Haemir, Fand, Sol and Corbin head back to the hut, the Rapke known as Fand speaks to Sol.
"I finally realised how I know you little Sol-jah".
Haemir looks down and scratches behind Fands ear, he notes the tears welling in her eyes. His psychic connection with the Rapke tells him this is a private moment and so he bids them both goodnight and heads off to find Ruby. He pauses at the door to the hut and looks back at Fand and Sol one last time, then heads in. If Ruby is asleep he wakes him and reassures him everything will be ok. He sits near by.

"It's time Ruby, I will guide you to elsewhere, hold my hand and don't let go. Set your goal. Your intent n' if you find yourself wondering where you are remind yourself what it is. To speak to Your Ma or Pa decide on one for now". His eyes seem to cycle through the different colors of the Sargrass and Ruby feels relaxed enough to enter into a trance.

In elsewhere - a misty realm - he guides the beastfolk through pathways until they reach a brighter part. Whichever one of the dreamers chosen. Haemir bows to Ruby and says:
"This is their dream, but they will stop what they are doing and listen when you speak". (He casts: Dream (SLA) 1/day).
"When you wish to wake simply will it and you will be back in the Sargrass". The elf steps back and leaves Ruby to it. Fading into the dream. He hopes that with the resources to hand the beastfolk will find peace.
---

Back in his hut he stands and stretches, walks over to the door and leans on the frame. He keeps watch over Ruby whilst he dreams, causally looking over the grasses. It had been a few years now and he had finally found a home he liked. Quiet, savage, beautiful, peaceful, mysterious and dangerous. But you couldn't deny it's bounty - it gave as good as it took. He felt at peace here and nowhere else would match up to it. He watches as Fand sits next to Sol, but he doesn't listen in.
---

The Rapke known as Fand sits next to Sol and says:
"I finally realised how I know you Sol, I should have realised sooner, but I did not know how much time had passed before my... Well death. Do you remember a night maybe 12,14 years ago? You were in your fathers house and there was a little old nanny. She doted on you and behind your fathers back taught you your first spell"? She looks at him as his face goes through several emotions at once.
"Miss Netley her name was and she loved you dearly. Even though you were even scrawnier than you are now". She chuckles at her own teasing of the wizard.
"Her name in full was Miss Fand Netley and she was a Bloodwitch. Do you remember her"?
The Rapke drops down onto her belly and leans against the wizard.
"No one is more surprised than I am that we meet again Elijah 'little Soldier' Solomon"! She looks him right in the eyes (hers are begining to brim). "And no one is more proud of the man you have become"... Her eyes fill with too much emotion for even her to put into words.

Sol's ears perk up at the mention of "Sol-jah" he frowns. His thoughts immediately becoming a whirlwind.

"Sol-jah... that is a name I have not heard in a very long time..." he realises it's the voice of the Rapke and so turns to it, looking into it's eyes as it speaks.

"Yes... I remember... Miss Netley was the one that taught me the power of magic and of my mind... I miss her terribly."

He listens to the Rapke, speaking to him, and he frowns, uncertainty clear on his face and in his movements. Normally confident in himself, he appears almost like a small boy again.

"I am not certain I am any LESS scrawny than I was, merely a bit taller..." He smirks at the teasing. It had been a long time since anyone had tried to do so, and he knew her heart was in the right place.

At the full name his face drops, and the pain that washes over his face is clear to anyone, even those who don't know him, and his usual, measured response to everything, in this moment his emotions are winning.

"Of course I remember her..." to those who don't know him, he even looks a little guilty.

"Fand... Miss Netley... I am so sorry... I did not know how to control the magic... but I have understood it a lot better since then. I... have not had an accident again. I have tight control. " he seems at a loss as to what to say.

"I will become better... perhaps all is not lost... perhaps we can find you a body?" He pauses. "No, that would not be right. You taught me all things must have their end, that is why they are beautiful, because they do not last forever."

He rubs his eyes, as they threaten to well up, but he seems to clamp down on the emotion.

"It is good to see you again... but we will be able to travel together! That means we can catch up. Perhaps we could learn from one another." His eyes brighten and he smile widely, simply patting and stroking the Rapke, and giving it affection and attention.

Before the party reunites

Rurik overhears a rumor of a monster that has been seen near the wet environs and the new grass that has grown up. Descriptions of the monster are varied. Rurik hears that some animals (a prairie pig? a dog?) have gone missing.

Haemir's spirit companion comes to a realization, and has a heart-to-heart with Sol.

After the party reunites

Herbert has been busy with the duty of getting the Master Climber-Builder and his apprentice all settled in. He is now free to rejoin you.

After comparing notes, you realize that the area in which this monster has been reported is the same place that the sage intends to go herb gathering tomorrow.

In the night

Rubalad has been with the Maiden heroes for weeks, and has gotten to trust them: he relaxes and dreams T Haemir’s direction. The BloodWitch may feel the spell works for the Beastfolk just as well as a human or other noble race. The young badger-kin gets to his choice and moves to speak to his distaf side. “Mother, it is Ruby. I am alive and safe in a region called Sargrass. I have met a group of explorers and am helping them as I learn more. I have landed on my feet. I will find my quarry and bring justice. My love to the clan, to father, and to you. I guess that’s it Haemir.”

Yesterday, Herbert did some shopping. You can spend 5 gp or 100 gp on a nicer instrument that gives you a +2. Pick your type and quality. The paladin does not have a take on what to do about the unknown monster and the possible danger facing the sage.

You travel as a group and meet Stumwhistle, while he is in the safety of New Rattledam.

Rubalad thinks about his new friends and their abilities as if he is on the trail of a quarry. Hmmm, two Paladins, one Wizard, one BloodWitch, one Sage (who they have to keep alive bulgur also is the only one who knows where to go), and himself.

” As a suggestion, let me be ‘point man’ to look for tracks and ambushes, then Rurik as bodyguard to the Sage, then Sol with Haemir and his pet, then Herbert as rear guard. Since beast-folk and humans are faster than a dwarf, Rurik and the Sage is the pivot point, our ‘dwarf-fort’ that the rest of us fall in on if there is an attack.” .

Haemir and Sol are obviously the more long-time members of the group, so Ruby will defer to them for any modifications or changes to his idea.

On the walk, he keeps his eyes peeled for dangers and spoor that may indicate dangers. And takes the occasional look back at the Sage to sense if there is any deviousness in the man. Herbert readies an arrow and releases it when the creature advances, which it does. [OOC: In your next post, please roll to hit for your shot, and then also take your regular actions for next round.]

Haemir readies charm monster to take effect as the monster comes into range. It does advance, and the spell goes off. The monster has spell resistance, so please make a spell penetration check at the top of your next post.

The monster runs at you, but at its top speed, it only moves 80 ft forward. At the end of the round, it is 20 ft away from you. It is changing shape as it advances, and that makes it trip over its own limbs from time to time; that's why it is slow.

At the start of the next post we'll resolve the arrow attack and the charm spell. Please post your actions for the next round.

The Sage takes one look, shouts in alarm, and runs away in the other direction.

Herbert fails to fire his arrow. [OOC: No post from player]

Haemir tries to charm it. The monster as SR18. Haemir rolled a 21, so his spell may work. It still gets a save ... It rolls a 17, just shy of the spells DC18!

The monster is charmed. It halts for a moment, looking at Haemir oddly. It does not attack this round.

There are posts with attacks rolled. Attacking a charmed creature poses the danger of breaking the charm. If you still wish to attack, just post that your prior post holds. If you choose not to attack, then please make an alternate post. We are still round-by-round.

Herbert watches and exclaims.

Ruby walks right up next to it, weapon in hand. This close, he sees an Ioun Stone circling the monster's "head."

Rurik tries to detect evil, finds that it is NOT evil, and thus does not activate his smite power.

Haemir casts a Spectral Hand. Anyone else casting would probably have been seen as threatening by the monster, but it trusts its friend Haemir and does not mind.

The monster DOES mind Ruby's posturing and invasion of its personal space. It lashes out at Ruby, hitting AC24 ... a miss against the well-defended Ruby. It moves away 20 feet after lashing out.

Ruby, you may take an AoO against the thing, but doing so will definitely break the charming magic, hit or miss.

Herbert is not ready to attack a non-evil creature that is not attacking. He's ready to heal.

Sol moves closer, but not into melee range, since he is trying to project peaceful vibes.

Rubalad does not take the offered AoO, but he is not on board with Herbert's reticence nor Sol's non-threatening nature. Instead, Ruby charges and slashes with his scimitar! He lands a solid blow (not a crit) for 10 damage.

This ends the charm, and the beast snarls in pain.

Haemir moves up behind Ruby and indicates his desire to touch his friend's scimitar. He casts Greater Magic Weapon on the blade.

Ruby is cursed! The effect is this: Your body is shapeless and shifting; your shape constantly melts, flows, writhes, and boils. You are immune to precision damage (like sneak attacks) and critical hits. You cannot hold or use any item -- you drop your weapon. Clothing, armor, helmets, and rings become useless. Large items worn or carried—armor, backpacks, even shirts—hamper more than help, reducing the victim's Dexterity score by 4. Speed is reduced to 10 feet or one-quarter normal, whichever is less. You cannot cast spells or use magic items, and you gain a -4 penalty on attack rolls and a 50% miss chance.

Ruby cannot attack with blade and spikes. He can make unarmed attacks. Ruby, please feel free to take your attacks and use them for unarmed attacks. Recall that if you do not have Imporved Unarmed Attacks, you provoke an AoO when you lash out (at -4 and with a 50% miss chance), if you choose to do so.

Ruby, ALSO make a DC 17 fort save every round or take a point of Wisdom. Three consecutive saves removes the curse.

ALSO, you have the option to make a DC15 Will save to regain your form for a minute.

I need the DC17 Fort save from Ruby, and the decision on attacks for this round. You might, for example, choose to forgo those attacks and use total defense.

Haemir moves his spectral hand to Ruby and casts Remove Curse. That does the trick, and Ruby is fine.

Rurik attacks and hits for 16 damage. (The hit vs AC18 misses. It is AC20.)

Herbert lays hands on Ruby and heals 8 points.

The monster flails at Rurik and Rubalad.

Against Rurik it hits AC20 and AC14. That's one hit for 9 damage and a fort save vs DC17 or be cursed!

"No, we didn't have to. We could have taken our time with it and been very careful about killing it to preserve the body, as it continued to attack us and perhaps kill us. If you want things killed pristinely, then get hunters with bows, not a dwarf with a falchion."

"Please, all of you, let me thank you properly. I'd love to host you at the finest eatery in town, to show my appreciation!"

At this point other townsfolk have arrived and are gawping at the dead chaos beast. The tone of the comments is amazement -- both amazed at the odd strange creature and at the bravery of the heroes.

Stumwhistle calls everybody around and declaims in his oration voice the story of the encounter. He speaks self-deprecatingly of his own lack of foresight and tendency to run away, while lauding to all the way you heroes took charge of the situation. People gasp when they hear that Ruby was cursed -- TWICE -- by the monster.

If you do not object, the sage leaves off his field trip to lead you back into New Rattledam to celebrate. A couple brawny townsfolk carry the corpse with.

Herbert takes out his concertina and sings a sea (grass?) shanty about Ruby the Brave and dances a jig. He does without proficiency, but with charm and enthusiasm.

Rurik is surprised by the amount of awe and ceremony that surround them as they head back to town, not used to his exploits being celebrated so fiercely. Modestly downplaying the role he played in the creature's death, he and Ruby go back and forth for a short while arguing over who dealt the fiercer blows, Rurik arguing for the strength of Ruby's sword arm. As the scholar loosens up Rurik warms to him, taking him aside privately and giving a few words of warning

"I understand that for those not used to such things, being ambushed by monsters can be...unsettling to say the least. Truth be told, sometimes it still shakes me to my bones. But you have to keep in mind that what's out there may not be alone, and what may be dangerous as a group willbe lethal on your own. Your fellows are your greatest asset, even when they aren't adventurers like us. You need to be sure that you can do these sorts of things safely, or else one day you simply wont come back, and I doubt anyone here wants that. We got lucky today, but luck runs out. Best to have good fellows and a strong arm instead."

Rubalad talks up the value of teamwork and the mickle prowess of his friends.

Needles nods along and echoes Ruby's praise. "I have an idea about this," he says, half musing aloud. "I think we need to do something about this. Ruby, will you and your friends visit the Council on the day after tomorrow?"

Haemir reaffirms Ruby's words and speaks up the beastfolk as well. One of the servers in the establishment, a very pretty girl, seems quite taken with what Haemir is saying, and in a private moment thanks him and plants a kiss on him. Her hands are a little "busy" during that kiss!

Haemir, please make a Perception check vs DC10 If you make it then Please Highlight to display spoiler: {She reaches into a pocket, maybe to take something? If so, she failed.}

Haemir, please make another Perception check vs DC9 If you make it then Please Highlight to display spoiler: {She tried to put a small note into another pocket. If you read the note, you see it has her name (Saraboo) and an invite to a rendez-vous!}

Herbert starts up an enthusiastic tune! Soon the crowd is joining in. It may not be a professional performance, but professional musicians seldom visit the town, and the effort is greatly appreciated!

Rurik engages Sage Stumwhistle in a deep practical and philosophical discussion. The sage very much enjoys this, and engages with Rurik.

At the end of the night, he offers Rurik "a very small token of my thanks," a small container of tea. It takes hot water and a minute to steep, but upon drinking it acts as a spell of Lesser Restoration. There's enough tea for six cups. [Please note on your sheet as a fate item granted by DM Cayzle on this date. No resale value, no ding vs WBL.]

Assuming Ruby accepts the invitation from Needles, the heroes have all day tomorrow for R&R, training, and activities. In Haemir's case, maybe "activities?"

Ruby readily accepts a meeting with the Council, even though he’s not sure what they would want with him and the Maiden Voyagers. For Ruby, it is another step towards acknowledgement and legitimacy for beast-folk!

He uses his spare time to ensure he is presentable; cleaning and minor repairs of equipment and clothes. He will even seek out the tradesmen for more serious repair.

On the day to meet the Council, he leaves his backpack, but comes in armor and sheathed weapons. His cloak, tunic, and trews the mottled greens and tans of a hunter.

Rurik spends the rest of the day working on his gear, polishing his armor and honing the edge of his blade. A mere fighter can present themselves any which way, but a paladin must be a shining beacon, as if they had stepped from a storybook. Shining armor and glittering blade, beaming smile and a reassuring voice. He of course looks forward to the council meeting, and hopes that any words of wisdom he can provide are useful. Between Needle before, and Sturmwhistle now, Rurik is learning about another aspect of being a hero, of helping with the small fights and monsters we all face.

Oblivious Haemir misses his chance at an assignation! Perhaps another day.

Rubalad, sensitive to acting as a representative of his people and his comrades, makes a special effort to buff up his appearance.

Rurik too shines up real nice.

Sol and Herbert seem unconcerned about what turns out to be a formal occasion.

The event begins with just the party and the Council of Rattledam; Stumwhistle is there as well. The Council asks for an account of the encounter with this Chaos Beast. After hearing out the heroes, Stumwhistle adds that in his opinion, this is the creature that was seen earlier, and that it is an individual drawn from another dimension.

"It is well known to scholars and natural philosophers that the Sargrass is located on a 'thinny,' which is to say, that the boundaries between the Wold and other places are thin here," the sage lectures. "In time past, this led to a lake of Woldsblood pooling under the Sargrass, with disastrous effects. While the gods, in their mercy, restored the Sargrass, the boundaries are still thin, and so an individual outsider, such as this Beast, may from time to time pop in. My guess is that this one brought with it a pool of water, which gave rise to the burst of flora I have observed."

"In my opinion, though, this is not an indication of an infestation or migration. These worthy heroes have saved us."

Needles bows and gathers a consensus of the Councilors. "Then we can proceed to the public portion of the day," he concludes.

He leads everybody to the wide porch outside the chamber. You see that a crowd has gathered.

A trumpet is blown and Needles reads from a scroll:

In recognition of many deeds achieved to the benefit of the people of New Rattledam, The Council recognizes the heroes known as the Sargrass Sentinels.

They helped protect and found this community.

They helped establish elections and the political basis of our community.

With their remarkable vessel, The Maiden of the Plains, they have established contact with the city of Zaran, a future trading partner.

They traveled to a Climber community and brought back a master weaver to improve our defenses.

And most recently, they protected the town against an invader from another dimension.

For these and other services, in recognition of the vital role they have played, the Council is pleased to declare the Sentinals as "Heroes of Rattledam."

Needles rolls up the scroll and presents it to Haemir.

"We are also pleased," Needles continues, "to bestow upon you these small tokens of appreciation."

Needles shakes the hand of each hero and gives each of you a ring woven of steelgrass.

[OOC: These rings are nonmagical, but if you choose to have them enchanted at the Catacombs in the future, you may do so at a 10% discount. Please list your ring on your sheet and note that this Fate Item was bestowed by ACDM Cayzle on this date.]

"And now, if their hearts moves them to speak, we would hear from each of you heroes! Please step up and offer us a few words!"

Rubalad smiles, very pleased, as he accepts his SteelGrass Ring. Privately, he quips, ”Sargrass Sentinels? I like the name. Didn’t know we were called that!”

He steps up to the porch rail and hops up so more people can see his white striped head. “I thank you, and am proud to be a part of the Sargrass Sentinels!”. He steps down. He really doesn’t have anything he can say about the community, only having been in town for a couple of days, and Momma always warned to never promise the whole bandit camp when you don’t have them in hand.

Fand virtually pushes Haemir to the podium (he's that shocked by the turn of events).
"There are many people that should be here receiving this n' they can't be here. I dunno about being a hero, I do know this though. It doesn't take one hero to do all this, it takes many.
It takes us, it takes all of you and it takes patience n' persistence. Having a good team around
" He gestures to the party, "I try n' keep the stitches together. They do the hero-ing".
He scratches his head and steps back after thanking everyone. He's not even sure if what he said made sense - he was that flumoxed.

"Hero? That's an awfully big word, but thank you. You've all been very kind to us, and shown us great hospitality in your home. I am happy to help in any small way that I can. You all are very good folk, and I am proud to be part of the Sentinels...It is a role...no, a duty...that I take very seriously, even if I am not the most serious of beings at all times. Good peoples of New Rattledam, I am honored to serve, and thank you for the gift." and with that, Herbert bows and steps down with a shy smile.

As the others speak Haemir looks out across the grass...
Had it whispered again? He could almost understand it!
There was something final almost about the award, he could feel the wind of change on the horizon.

Haemir scans all the faces in the crowd, so many new ones, but still he spotted a few from his ship that left three years ago.
They had done everything they had set out to do. Could he relax finally?

There was still some exploring left to do - but it felt like he wasn't needed here anymore.
The people were safe and even as they spoke he could see the advances that the weavers were making. Soon New Rattledam would be safe and possibly even some of the major guilds would be joining them soon.
He could see living proof of the immense power of a group of people coming together with similar interests who - the power of working together toward the same goals.

He sighs and looks up to the sky, the sun warming his face and closes his eyes, remembering everyone he had adventured with.

Bigby, the tenacious Beastfolk and his wolf. In the end he had found his family.
Ungy - the awkward bard - who always made Haemir laugh.
Barnaby - another Beastfolk Avian who Fand (when she'd been in bird form) had a thing for.
Caelwyn - the Paladin who often steered the party on the right path, the voice of reason.
'Lil - the priest who literally kept them alive, her words of wisdom would stuck with him forever.
Akuno - the princess of cats who's innocence refreshed him.
Thorondir - the scary druid who literally bought the Sargrass alive.
Grindar, Son of Grindor and his lion. Wait hadn't Haemir seen him in a dream recently?
Xel'Aw - the learned, gentle and articulate poet.
Sol - he looks towards his friend and sees that Fand has flopped down next to the wizard, the boy she had given her life for many years ago. She didn't regret her decision then - nor now.

The Sargrass was in good hands - Rurik, Ruby and Herbert were better defenders of the weak than he would ever be. He would miss them too.

Those that he could not see - he hopped were all safe, happy and with their loved ones.

Haemir himself had never found his loved one, but he was still young for an elf. Maybe she was out there?
Or maybe he'd found it here in the form of the Sargrass. It was crazy, weird, scary and yet always beautiful.

In his life he had always understood one thing. You always leave a piece of yourself in the places you love.
Part of him would always be here - sailing the plains, the wind in his hair.
The shouts of his friends.

He isn't quite sure why he says it but he words spill out: "Never say goodbye because goodbye means going away and going away means forgetting".

Rurik steps up to the podium, looking out at the sea of faces. Faces looking to him with expectation, excitement, interest. These people see him as a hero, and he finally is beginning to feel like one, instead of simply playing the part, doing his duty. He is no longer a young soldier, dreaming of the day when he can remake the name his forefathers sullied. These people only know his name through his actions, and they have judged him worthy. He prays his ancestors may do so as well. Taking a deep breath, he begins.

"People of New Rattledam. I have seen much in my travels across the world, but nothing as unusual as these grassy plains, and have seen few as bold and fearless as those who choose to live here. Your courage, resourcefulness, and skill are boundless, and the world would be a better place if there were more who shared it. I have done my part to keep this place alive, to shield it and protect it from the dangers that would topple it, but this work is beyond any one warrior. We must all be shields, beacons of light to guard against the night. We must come together, strong as steelgrass, to reach into the heavens and bring them here to dwell among us. You must not forget your duty, your obligation, to defend your countrymen. I have seen places where brother turns on brother, and the rich steal from the poor, but those places are far from here. We must all ensure that such evils do not take root here! Much as the grass advances through the fields, strangling the crops til nothing remains but rot, so too does evil bring cataclysm on the places it dwells. Adventurers can only do so much to prevent the spread of such vileness, and there is much work to be done in the world by us. It is up to you all to take up arms, be vigilant, and wise, and hold the line against the coming dark, like a beacon against the spread of the shadow! It seems daunting, impossible, to do so. But it is not! I am just one man, born in the shadows with little but scraps, and yet i have become the paladin of the light you see before you. You are all made of stern stuff, strong, and with inner fire like a blazing forge. I believe in this. I believe in you. And I believe in New Rattledam!"

Rubalad offers a short speech to express his pride in his friends. Everybody applauds.

Haemir offers a longer speech that calls back to the friends he has made here in the Plains. He seems a bit flummoxed, but the folks listening cheer him on.

Herbert focuses on the duty of being a hero, protecting others and offering thanks for the gift.

Amid the speechifying, Haemir waxes philosophical and a bit melancholy.

Rurik charges the people to stick together, to keep the community strong. He appeals to their pride, and the result is a thunder of approval.

Sol, maybe too shy, keeps to the background.

The party lasts into the night, and everyone enjoys the company of their heroes. Tomorrow is another day, a day that may hold more adventures, or perhaps peace at home, but tonight, the Wold delights in you.

[OOC: Thank you, my friends, for the privilege of being one of your DMs. This marks the last DM Post for the Sargrass Plains game. Please feel free to post here for your final goodbyes over the next day or two.]

Food and talk, and listening and being heard. Ruby is proud that he is being treated as an equal, and enjoys his time. The community seems strong, and thanks in good part to what Haemir and Sol and their friends have wrought. And Rurik’s speech has seemed to bring the town of New Rattledam even more together.

”I don’t think I’m needed here anymore. I think I’m going to take ship and try to find my way back to New Elennia.”
