(OOC: I'm sure by now all have read their mails. I'm cutting the actual scene short to give us some options for the last two weeks.)

Two crystal Golems are held suspended in a whirlwind. The other two are hanging upside down in a reverse gravity field...

Sigvar waits to see what new form the Golems will take.
Trayvin shares the thought to look out for the one who's actually controlling these constructs... as there's no immediate danger coming from the Golems Nikolai carefully looks for this 'controller'... So does Tinker
Anna flies into the reverse gravity field and takes a tasty bite of Crystal diamond dust - something to drink with this would be good...
Now Pompous... he's just having a good time with his bow. Assuming he brought enough arrows he can go on like this for quite some time...

Pru's friend Frank continues to batter the Golems in his Vortex. Next she dismisses the anti gravity field expecting the Golems to crash. Which they don't! All 4 golems have frown wings and can now fly... Both have tried Anna... both have tried Sigvar. They could not hit them... and then there's Mikael! A target they haven't tried yet!!

Golem 6 attacks Mikael - hits AC41 - damage 18 (adamantine)
Golem 6 attacks Mikael - hits AC42 - damage 23 (adamantine)
Golem 7 attacks Mikael - hits AC30

Golems 1 and 2 can now fly so they get a new Reflex save to espace from the votex.
Golem 1 - reflex save 20
Golem 2 - reflex save 26 - quite good effort but still not good enough to escape an elder elemental

....

Maybe Trayvin is right... someone might be controlling these Golems.

All four remaining Golems start to glow a light from within. From their chest a bright white light shines that is reflected though the crystalline body. It's blinding to your eyes!
The light just keeps on growing stronger and brighter making you covering your eyes untill ... the 4 Crystallince Golems explode in a clowd of diamond dust, diamonds and crystals. First to fall on the ground are the crystals and diamonds. Then slowly the dust falls down over all of you. Those not flying are covered now in a thin layer of diamond dust.

........

The Glacier falls silent...

Nikolai and Tinker notice how the footsteps from the 7 Golems all seem to come from the same large crevasse in the Glacier. But there are even more footprints going in and out the crevasse.
The Crevasse is some 210ft deep but if you peak down, even from the top you can see a cave at the bottom of it...

Loot and rewards :

I know this may be bad timing knowing the game is about to close but you are all good for 120K from the previous scene (Griffons Everywhere) which I forgot to reward and another 120K from this scene (The Only way is up)

On the ground there's 100K wortd of diamons, 50K worth of diamond dust and 75K of crystals chunks.

The party take a brief moment to get ready before making their way safely down the crevasse through flight, climbing and Bean Pole's feather falls.

The bottom has a small layer of snow that makes it soft to land on. Looking around it's clear by the footprints in the snow that you're not the first to be here. Quadrupeds, bipeds, large paws, small footsteps. It’s quite a menagerie. All of them lead into the cave. None lead out.

Pompous can tell that these tracks are all very fresh. All have been made within the last hour, and many sooner than that.

The cave ahead of you is huge. Easily 20ft wide and just as high. The walls are covered in bright white ice and sharp icicles hang delicately to the roof. It disappears deep into the glacier. The way shrouded in darkness.

You can hear noises echoing from the cave but it’s hard to tell what they are. Metal striking metal, groans, roars. You can't tell the specifics but you are veterans and best bet - a fight is happening.

Sigvar's hooves crunch in the fresh snow as he lands at he bottom. He listens to the sounds as some of the others read the story written in tracks on the ground. Through the link the commanders share you can feel Sigvar shrug and mentally point towards the sounds. " Sounds like a fight. Lets go see who is involved and what we can do about it. Someone might, maybe want to talk instead of just give their lives away by attacking a heavily armed and prepared group of soldiers."
"Or more of the same. Whichever let me take point. My hide is thick and if they want a fight I'll be sure to oblige them."

He heads towards the sound of fighting.

Pompous sets to examining the tracks. The ranger is careful not to step on any and crouches down to check the depth and spread. The snow is disturbed. Something burrowed through this area and disrupted the surface. The tracks? Definitely at least one medium humanoid. The tracks looks the same as those you found before the wraiths attacked. Some sort of webbed tracks as well. A frog? Large insect prints. Probably a beetle of some kind. A few large humanoid footprints too. Giants again? Hmm. Quite a lot to take in. It would take some time to go through each set for some definitive answers.

As for how they got here? That is indeed very curious. Nikolai Holmes can't see any signs to indicate where they came from. There's certainly no marks on the walls. They just... appear. It's like whatever made them just 'poof' .. appeared in this spot and then started walking into the cavern.

Sigvar takes the lead and guides the others into the cave.

As you enter it doesn't take long before you come across the corpses of different creatures scattered on the ground. Mounds of ice shards, large blue frogs that have been eviscerated, humanoids covered in thick white fur matted with red blood, and massive white beetles that have been split in half.

Knowl Planes DC17: Highlight to display spoiler: {The Ice shards are likely the remains of some ice elementals}
Knowl Arcana DC19: Highlight to display spoiler: {The beetles are gelid beetles}
Knowl Arcana DC16: Highlight to display spoiler: {The frogs are glacier toads.}
Knowl Nature DC14: Highlight to display spoiler: {The humanoids are yetis}

It must have been quite a fight. The footsteps didn't end here though. More continue into the cave. The party the sound of combat grows louder ahead. Sounds like the fight isn’t over yet!

The cave continue on another hundred feet before opening into a wide cavern - some 150ft wide and 20ft high. The walls are solid ice and rock. On the northern side of the room - flanked by two pillars - is a sculpture of a beautiful ice maiden carved into the ice.

Of course that's once you get past all that is actually happening inside the cavern. It is quite the menagerie! Four light blue oozes sliming their way along the ice, four azure swarms of tiny insects, a pair of cold iron elementals that look a little bigger than normal, three huge akhluts who are just as comfortable on land as in the water, and two medium sized red dragons - perhaps the odd ones of the bunch.

On the opposite side of the cavern looks to be their intended taget: a man with white, shaggy hair armed with two swords and currently fighting off two of the oozes. His red dragonhide armor has seen better days but is still in good enough condition to help protect him. One of his swords looks like it is made of pure light and slices into the ooze easier than a normal blade would. Right now though he is backed against a wall, with all the monsters - and you - blocking the only exit.

Despite his focus he is keenly aware of his surroundings and spots Sigvar at the entrance to the cavern. "A little help?"

As they move toward the cave, Pru is able to identify some of the remains. "Those shards probably came from some kind of ice elemental," she says. "The bugs were gelid beetles, and I think those frog things were glacier toads."

Inside the cavern, Pru winces to realize that, once again, she has gone into battle already injured. Last time she did that, she died. Hopefully this time will be different.

While everybody is still close together, she casts Haste on the party. The dead things that she'd seen were vulnerable to fire--at least, some of them were--and she's eager to see if these ones are, too. She casts a quickened Fireball where it will hit swarms 2 and 4, and the two humanoid-looking things. They all take 40 damage, DC 20 Reflex save for half. [Let me know if I need to roll SR]

Sigvar wants to get a better idea on who is on what side. "All hostile!" the man in armor calls out as he slashes at one of the oozes, killing it quickly. Regardless, Sigvar goes to attack the nearest Akhlut. It bites at him as he gets within it's range (AoO hits AC43. Crit not confirmed on AC34. Sigvar takes 38pts damage!). It's unable to hold him in it's jaws. Sigvar then delivers a hit of his own

Tinker positions himself in front of Pru, ready to protect the fragile caster. He draws a scroll from his haversack and prepares to use it.

Pru gives a little speed to the party and then follows up with a fireball. She places it to the north-east, careful to avoid the red dragon. The humanoid elementals take the full brunt, but the swarms avoid a little of it.

Pompous activates his cloak and uses a tattoo. He prepares to cast align weapon on his bow when time allows (Highlight to display spoiler: {Activating the tattoo was your standard action I think})

Trayvin is able to cast a Holy Aura spell that covers all the party.

Michael flies over the top of the Akhlut and positions himself on the other side of it.

Anna decides that a dragon form would be far more suitable for this battle.

The enemy act...

With the exception of the oozes, the rest all turn to face the party.

The red dragons each cast a spell centred in the middle group: Greater Dispel Magic!
Trayvin loses his GMW and the Holy Aura spell, removing it from everyone! (d3=1, 1reroll, 3)
Sigvar loses the GMW on his weapon and his Endure Elements! (d3=3, 1)
Anna loses her Barkskin and Form of the Dragon spells! (d3=2, 3)
Pompous loses his Protection from Evil and Align Weapon! (d4=4, 4reroll, 4reroll, 3)
Pru loses her Haste spell, removing it from everone!

Tinker doesn't have any spells in effect and Michael is out of range.

They each then cast a quickened magic missile to bombard Trayvin! (Trayvin takes 3+4+2+5+2+2+3+5+3 = 32pts damage!)

Cold Iron Elemental 1 moves towards the group and slams into Tinker! (Hit AC38. Tinker takes 18pts damage)

Cold Iron Elemental 2 moves towards Sigvar but is unable to hurt the taur! (Miss AC32)

Swarm 1 flies towards the group

Swarm 2 flies south to settle over Sigvar! (Provokes 2 AoOs. Sigvar takes 1pt Con damage)

Swarm 3 flies east to settle over Michael! (Provokes an AoO. Michael takes 1pt Con damage)

Swarm 4 flies south and settles on Tinker and Pru! (Provokes an AoO from each of you. Tinker and Pru takes 1pt Con damage)

Akhlut 1 turns to attack Michael with a Vital Strike! (Hit AC36. Michael takes 43pts damage + 14pts cold damage. Grab CMB:38. Michael is grappled!)

Akhlut 2 advances to attack Sigvar, but misses! (Miss AC35)

Akhlut 3 moves south towards the group.

The oozes move to press their attack on the swordsman. "Just hold on! Once I've taken care of these we can flank the rest!"

Over the mind link he says " These things can't like fire, with the exception of those blasted dragons. I have protected myself Prudence, please burn the dickens out of these things all over me."
" Oh, and I really like this guy's style. We need to save him, for real.Just hold on! Once I've taken care of these we can flank the rest! Priceless!"

Surveying his opponents, Sigvar notes that of all of them, the golems will likely be the hardest for the spellcasters to deal with, so he decides that the one that walked into range should be his focus. Heroically (last one), he launches a full out assault on it, after taking a 5 foot step to his right to catch the interest of the second one too.

Sigvar attacks the swarms that descend on him but is no doubt dismayed to find his weapon does no damage. It flies harmlessly through the cloud of buzzing insects. He determines that they are immune to weapon damage. He has much better success with the cold iron elemental and smashes the thing to pieces.

Pompous casts a Wind Wall to try and keep the swarms from advancing, blasting them up to the ceiling. It won't suffocate them but it will stop them from moving. Highlight to display spoiler: {I can't work out where you want the wall. Can you give coordinates or put it on the map please? I won't have any of the swarms act this round}

Tinker goes from offense to defence. His job right now is to keep Pru safe and that's exactly what he intends to do.

Pru takes a step to the side and casts a couple of spells: the first to hasten the party and the second to burn those pesky swarms. She can hear the bugs burn with a satisfying sizzle.

Trayvin gets closer to the action and tries to defensively cast a spell. The gods aren't with him this time and the spell fizzles.

Anna opts for another shape - this time a huge plant!

Nikolai jumps into the fight with Michael. He's unsuccessful in his attempt to trip the huge creature (Highlight to display spoiler: {You can only use a Ki point to make an attack when you're making a Flurry of Blows I think})

Michael is stuck it it's jaws but that doesn't stop him. He isn't going to be somethings lunch. Not today! He stabs at it repeatadly with his sunblade

The enemy act.

Red Dragon 1 and 2 go for a different tactic this time. They each cast Chain Lightning at Sigvar, and send each chain out to hit all the heroes!

Sigvar takes 47pts electric damage + 50pts electric damage. A Ref Save vs DC23 on each halves the damage
Everyone else takes 47pts electric damage + 50pts electric damage. A Ref Save vs DC21 on each halves the damage

Cold Iron elemental 2 slams heavily into Trayvin, but his armor deflects both blows (Miss AC37, AC30)

The swarms stay stuck on the ceiling, unable to move against the wind wall.

Akhlut 1 still has Michael grappled it it's mouth. It takes one big 'gulp' and the rogue finds himself deep inside it's belly! (CMB: 52. Michael takes 34pts damage + 17pts cold damage and has been swallowed! If he deals 18pts damage against AC19 he will cut himself out and have a story to tell!)

Akhlut 2 pursues Sigvar but the taur is able to dodge the creatures teeth (Miss AC35)

Akhlut 3 moves around the elemental to get close to Tinker! He sees it's jaws open and them feels them around his waist (Hit AC38. Tinker takes 76pts damage + 17pts cold damage and is grappled!)

Sword guy is doing well. He really is very highly trained and it shows. He has disected another ooze just as two more approach him

Tinker dodges both Chain Lightnings, his roguish abilities allowing him to avoid all damage.

The Akhlut abomination is a little bit more of a problem. So much of a problem that he is nearly killed with a single bite! No way he can survive another, and he briefly considers getting deliberately swallowed in order to cut the thing a new one from the inside. It’s only a split second: Tinker is sure he wouldn’t survive even five seconds in its cold, cold belly. So then there is only one option. Stay alive to get bitten again.

He heroically flips away from the mouth, and goes back to defending his post.

Pru is able to avoid the worst of the lightning damage. But Akhlut 1 has swallowed Michael and that's a problem. Pru aims a quickened Scorching Ray at Akhlut 1, hitting Touch AC 19 for 14 damage, Touch AC 31 for 17 damage, and Touch AC 26 for 16 damage.

That was a swift action. For her standard action, she would like to ready to dispel the red dragons if they cast a spell (or, you know, one of the dragons since she can only do it once). If a spell is cast, her Spellcraft check to identify it is 26. If the spell is on her spell list, she counters with the same spell, which is an automatic success. If it is not on her spell list, she casts a Dispel Magic; her check to dispel it is a 25. Counterspelling is complicated, and I know some DMs have had trouble in the past, so I'm going to repeat that she casts Dispel Magic only if the spell being cast is not on her spell list.

Sigvar heals himself and that starts the task of chopping the Akhlut up into small pieces.

Tinker pulls some weird type of contortion maneuver and twists himself out of the akhluts jaws, tumbling free.

Pru does what she can to burn away the akhlut that has swallowed Michael. She levels some very carefully aimed rays at it's head, careful to avoid it's stomach. She sets her sights on the red dragons and prepares to counter whatever they may throw at the party.

Pompous lines up a volley of flaming arrows and launches them at the nearest Akhlut.

Anna decides that more buffing is required before she gets close to the action.

Nikolai starts pummeling the akhlut that swallowed Michael. Michael feels the blows from the inside, but due to the thick layers of muscle in between, for him it feels like a soft-massage. Just what he needs after a hard days work. Unfortunately the massage ends when Nikolai's final blow also stops the Akhlut's heart beating.

Michael makes a triumphant return to the battlefield, cutting his way out of the creature and not looking back as it lays on the cold cavern floor. Whatever it had for lunch doesn't smell too good, and whatever it was now covers Michael. Someone is going to have to give the rogue a bath when this is all done.

Red Dragon 1 starts to cast a Gtr Dispel spell, which isn't on Pru's list. She counters it was a normal Dispel Magic easily enough.

Red Dragon 2 managed to get the spell off though and casts a Gtr Dispel Magic centred on Pru!

Sigvar loses his Haste spell! (d4=4)
Tinker loses his Haste spell
Pru loses her Haste spell
Pompous loses his Endure Elements spell (d3=1)
Anna loses her Transformation spell (d4=4)
The windwall is partially dispelled!
Nikolai and Michael are unaffected.

Each dragon then casts quickened magic missile spells as return fire on Pru (Pru takes 35pts damage!)

The Cold Iron elemental slams harmlessly into Trayvin (Miss AC31 and AC37)

Swarm #2 surrounds Sigvar (Sigvar takes 1pt Con damage!)

Swarm #4 dives down around Pru and Pompous! (Pru and Pompous each take 1pt Con damage!)

Akhlut #2 keeps up its attack on Sigvar! (Hit AC43. Crit not confirmed on AC38. Sigvar takes 72pts damage + 9pts Cold damage. Grapple CMB: 45. Sigvar is grappled!)

Akhlut #3 has had a taste of dwarf and wants more. It pursues Tinker but snaps harmlessly at the air (Miss AC31)

Your ally on the other side of the room does quite a bit of damage to one of the oozes.

If past rounds are any indication, Pru is going to die next round. She decides she'd rather not.

She steps out of the swarm [5-foot step], and casts Chain Lightning. Her primary target is the cold iron elemental; her secondary targets are the Akhluts and swarms 2 and 4. (Don't think it'll affect the swarms, but she has the targets available so why not).

They all take 51 points of damage; Reflex save for half. The DC for the save is 23 for the elemental, and 21 for everything else.

Then Pru casts a quickened Wall of Ice. She chooses the hemisphere form, and drops the hemisphere on....herself. Nothing on the battlefield has line of sight or line of effect to Pru until that ice wall is dealt with.

Tinker encourages Pru to fry him to a crisp. Well, fry the baddies. He's pretty sure he can escape unharmed.

Sigvar doesn't think he can go toe-to-toe with an akhlut much longer. Fortunately his strikes are clean and true. His sword buries deep in the side of the akhluts mouth and the beast stops moving.

Trayvin delivers some much needed healing to the KCs. Everyone is close enough to benefit from it!

With Akhlut 2 down, Pompous is able to fire another volley at the much closer one. His arrows hit and protrude from the creatures thick hide, and though it looks very hurt, it still stands.

Pru takes care of that though. With her chain lightning spell she kills it off and the cold iron elemental as well! Just to be safe, she drops an ice dome on her head to protect herself from the outside world.

With space to move, Nikolai runs over to Tinker to heal him up a bit.

Anna tries to activate her Dimension Door ability but teleportation spells are still locked down on the mountain, and the spell fizzles.

Trayvin starts casting a spell, but it's a mystery as to what that spell might be. Chances are it'll be a good one!

Pompous is able to finish off the dragon in front of Sigvar with just 1 arrow and sends the remaining at the last dragon standing.

The injured last dragon stands no chance against a combined assault from the Knight Commanders. As it falls you watch as it reverts to a humanoid form. A woman with pale blue skin that looks like intermingled crystals. The same with the other 'dragon'

The mystery swordsman makes light work of the remaining ooze. He uses his forearm to wipe the sweat from his brow, and gives a smile to the group. His hair is white and quite disheveled, but what do you expect from a guy who has been fighting all day. His armor shows signs of blood - in a few different colors too - but you can't see any wounds on him. He gives his neck a 'crick' and then walks over to the ice-maiden sculpture. He raises one of his swords above his head. "Might want to cover your eyes" With that brief warning he then lands a tremendous blow on the statue, slicing cleanly through it. The statue explodes with a blinding, bright light and sends tiny shards of ice in all directions. As the sound of the ice shards 'tinkling' to the ground and your eyes readjust to the light you can see the man propped up against the wall. "Well now. Frethja's not going to be too happy about that. We should be able to finally teleport off this rock now though."

He nods his head at Sigvar’s questions, but focuses only on one. He repeats: ”Who are you? We took you for an Immortal of Shadow Mountain, but by the way you talk, you are mortal. Oh, forgot my manners. I’m Daemar Torvalsson, one of the Knights Commander of the Mailed Fist. The griffons are under our protection as we end the unnatural cold. The which we thank you. Pru is able to dimension door out of the ice dome. The teleportation block has certainly been lifted. Trayvin is quick to patch ol' bean pole up and Nikolai is there to give her a hug.

Michael cleans the blood, guts, and half a spleen out of his clothes and hair. Not many people can say they were swallowed by an Akhlut and lived to tell the tale! He'll no doubt score a few free drinks in the taverns he frequents.

Pompous has had just about enough of the cold.

Sigvar and Tinker then start with the questions. The swordsman grins and sheathes his swords. "That's a whole lot of questions. I'm not saying I have all the answers, but this is what I know so far."

"Frethja is the one responsible for what's been going on here. She's caused the freezing temperatures and she's the one that locked down the mountain. Here's the thing though, she's not working alone. Looks like the powers here are battling to see who will come out on top. Not enough room for all four of them. The way I understand it is that Frethja and Mighty Granite have partnered up. Granite probably sees her as the most powerful of the four. Grandfather Wind and the Storm-Horse then allied. What you're seeing here is a power struggle between actual powers with mortals caught in the middle."

He continues. "From what I can tell, lowering the temperature made things uncomfortable for the people who weren't followers of hers. She's popular with the Frost Giants you see, but the Griffons and Hawkmen not so much. The more of them she drives from the mountain, the more worshippers of hers remain. The weaker Grandfather Wind and Storm Horse get, the stronger she gets. Locking down the teleportation meant that people can't get back in. She gets them off the mountain and doesn't want them back. Well, not until she's in charge at least."

He gives a smile to Sigvar. "Well I'm not an Immortal Power like them, but yes, I am Immortal. I've been called a different names over time but most now just call me the 'Spirit of the Mountain'. A bit long though. 'Spirit'. I think that works as a name."

Knowl Religion DC10: Highlight to display spoiler: {In the wold the spiritual hierarchy goes something like Mortals, Immortals, Immortal Powers, then Gods. Your DM isn't sure if 'Epic' is still used in the Wold as a level between mortal and immortal}

Anna asks a question about the ice maiden statue. "That? That was an altar to Frethja. Ever since she locked down the mountain I knew she had to have centered her spell somewhere. I figured somewhere on the glacier would be something I could destroy of hers. Of course, she wasn't going to make things easy for me. I've been fighting her minions all day. No doubt she thought they could box me in here." He glances at the corpses "She was probably right. Though I'm Immortal, Frethja still has more power than I do and could likely kill me if she really wanted to. At the least she could keep me busy or wear me down. I think that's what she was trying to do here. Just tire me out or trap me."

Sigvar is alarmed that Fethja might come to avenge the destruction of her statue. Spirit sighs and nods. "Yes. I should say she will." Almost as if on queue the party can hear noises coming from the tunnel opening. Pompous - closest to the entrance to the cavern - can see more creatures approaching. Frost Worms, Greater Gelid Beetles, Adlets, Elder Ice Elementals, two more Akhluts, and more. Frethja has an unending supply of minions she can summon and has them coming this way.

Spirit keeps his swords sheathed. "We've had a victory here today. The mountain is open again. The only way we will defeat her though is by gathering supporters. I'll stay on the mountain and fight where I can. If you're the protectors of the griffons then it will be on you to strengthen them. Supply them. Help them grow. Encourage them to return here. I'll do the same with the hawkmen. A fight is coming and they'll all need allies."

"I hope we'll meet again" Spirit waits to make sure the party have the ability to teleport (back to the Citadel?) before 'blipping' himself away.

Sigvar bows to Spirit.
" If you are returning to the hawkmen Please extend to them an invitation to return to the Citadel so that we might work on an alliance between the Griffons and them. I know there is no love lost between the two races but with a common enemy I think they might find some reason to at least talk, maybe enough reason to get along and work together. The sooner the better, certainly within a weeks time."
" Prudence, can you return us to the Griffons so that we can tell them the news and try to get as many of their brethren and allies back to the mountain as possible?"
" Spirit, Thank you for your assistance in this matter. If you have any sway with the hawkmen and can get them to tone down their, um, personalities I think we can make this work. If the giants are the problem I think we can do some things to make them less populous on the Mountain."

Message already sent to the Hawkmen. ” someone may need to stay with the Griffons for the long-term as a liaison with the Fist. Who do we know that wouldn’t mind working with Griffons possible for the rest of their career?”

For Tinker, he wants to get back to the Citadel and get down to managing the Mailed Fist as a Knight Commander that doesn’t go out on so many missions.

The mystery being solved is good, but Nikolai is still a bit disappointed. The struggle on the mountain will continue for thousands of years to come because some stupid immortals can't grow up and share.
And mortals suffer.

Makes him wander what sort of mortals they were to become this way when becoming immortal and why did they deserve it in the first place.

"Well, mystery solved, but it won't help keep the peace on the mountain. I doubt we will be able to convince the Birdmen and the Griffons that the Frost Giants weren't involved in any way. But maybe it will keep an all out war from starting. For now at least."

Turning to the Spirit of the Mountain, he asks "Which Immortal has the power to broker a binding agreement between these four fools in sharing the mountain and keeping the peace? Can you intercede with Floy to get them to stop this childish stupidity?"

Nikolai is ready to get back to the Citadel and check on their Administrators' management of things while they were gone. And maybe having a loooong hot bath.

lets bring a couple of these wolf/orca's with us, the griffons are hungry and I'd like them to eat these things instead of trying to eat me. Wardd knows I smell delicious to them right now.

at Tinker's suggestion Michael perks up. yeah Tink, I think I could handle being in charge of raising up a griffon detachment here. .

RobC - "Looks like the contract is almost finished for now."

At Michael's suggestion the party quickly gather what akhlut corpses they can and teleport back to the griffon aeries.

The pride are very surprised at the sudden appearance of the party. Their instinct is to attack but they've come to recognise you as friends. Perhaps even allies? Ceres pushes through the pack to get up close to the party to find out what happened.

Now safely back with the griffons, the party can see that the weather has indeed changed. It is starting to get warmer. Not immediately back to normal, but the wind is starting to ease and the sun can be seen through the clouds.

The group relay the story of what they have seen, fought, found and learned to the leader of the griffons. They also hand over the ahklut corpses for the griffons to make a meal out of.

Ceres puffs out his chest, raises his beak and barks loudly into the air, gaining the attention of the nearby griffons. "Brothers! We have an ally in this fight! The Spirit of the Mountain itself will protect us!" He looks back to the party and smiles. "Would you aid us if we called?"

It is something the party are quite keen to do obviously. Michael floats the idea of a griffon detachment based on the mountain. Ceres and Hemera give it some consideration but politely decline. They griffons agree that an alliance is mutually beneficial and is something they want, however, they cannot act as mounts for any except on the rare occasions that they choose. When one of the Knight Commanders is on the mountain they would be agreeable to it from time-to-time. But other Fist troops would not receive such an offer.

"There is something that we have for you. We had them crafted for you in anticipation of your return" Ceres looks back to Aphrilles, who approaches with either dark green, leafy wreathes. Each has a few tiny red berries on it. They are quite loosely held together (griffons aren't exactly known for manual dexterity!) but it is obvious a lot of care went into making them. "These may help you visit us again in the future". The party are each gifted one in turn.

The group consider their next steps. Sigvar considers thinning the number of giants on the mountain, though Trayvin thinks there may perhaps be a diplomatic way to handle it - try and erode their support for Frethja. It might be a tall ask to convince someone to change their religious beliefs though, especially if they are currently benefiting from it.

Nikolai wonders if perhaps the intervention of a God might settle the quarrel between the immortal powers. The Gods of the Wold tend not to interfere in matters unless things are truly dire. If the Powers of the mountain keep things up then it is quite likely at least one of them will intervene. Will it be Ffloy to come up with some contractual arrangement? Perhaps Domi to show them that he will act as protector to all on the mountain? Maybe Jancassis will fight a side to support? It will be interesting to see which.

With the contract finished, the party bid farewell to the griffons and return to the warmth of the Citadel.

Fate Items: Shadow Mountain Wreath
This wreath has been fashioned from a plant that is normally grown in the higher areas of Shadow Mountain. When found naturally it allows a person to chew it and gain the ability to breathe freely in areas of low oxygen. The plant normally only lasts for a few hours before the ability fades. This wreathes however grant the wearer this same ability indefinitely. In addition, the wreath is treated as having a permanent 'Goodberry' spell in place (CL1. Usable 1/day). Finally, each of the wreathes allow for one use of a Sending spell (CL7. One use only). The wreathes are slotless though must be watered as least once per week or lose their effectiveness. This fate item can stay with your PC if they are moving to a new game.

Back at the Citadel, a messenger waits for Pompous with a letter.
The letter is addressed to [ My Son, Commander Pompous Maximus ]

With haste Pompous returnes to his quarters and reads... the letter is from his beloved mother and the news his not good.

A stoic Pompous finishes his letter and starts packing his belongings. The ranger is obviously upset but maintains his dignity.

Fade scene

We come back to the Citadel's council room.

Pompous' badge of leadership is on the council table with two letters.
The first is the letter he received from his mother.
It reads
[ My son. It is with great sorrow that I must tell you that your father has died. I know that you have made a life outside of the family but we need you home now to take charge of the family buisesses. Please come home with due haste. I'm so sorry Pompous. Signed, your mother.] The paper is still wet on the top corners, likely from tears.

The second letter is addressed to the Commanders.

[ My friends.
I find myself at a lost of words.
The pain of losing my father is overwhelming and I do not have the ability to face all of you, my dear, dear, friends, and say what must be said.
I resign my commission as Commander effective immediately and return home to assign leadership of my family's trade interests. My mother may be the stongest woman I know, but I fear that my father's passing was not of natural means and she will need my bow arm to protect her and those we love.

Goodbye my dear, dear friends.

Signed

Pompous ]

The Teleportation spell that brings them back to the Citadel, it's funny how it always affects him the same. He always wonders if he is the same person he was before the teleport. he checks himself. Yep, still bloody I guess it's still me.

He looks around, there's a page nearby. Page! get me a bath ready, some clean clothes and let's get my leathers, armor, and equipment cleaned the page just stands there in questioning shock. Michael grins and his eyes soften. I had a spot of bother on this last mission, some kind of wolf/orca thing swallowed me whole and I had to cut my way out through his chest cavity, I could really use that bath.

His questions abated, the page remembers his duty and runs off to attend to things.

After the bath, he has food brought to his quarters and sets writing in his journal and contemplating life. The griffons, wild as they are, will be a long-term project. he will need to spend a lot of time among them. learn their language and ways. befriend them and prove his worth to them. the current crop will not be amendable to the Fist. but they young ones, raised on stories of adventure and bravery? while also being freed from the yoke of having to scrabble for subsistence on a daily basis? Maybe not today, but in a few years, a decade at the outside, the fist will have an air wing. Prolly need to try and round up the griffons that left and get them back to the main pride as well.

later when he finds that pompous has left to attend to family. he spends some time making sure that his position and responsibility are covered and that his absence makes as little splash as possible.

There is paperwork to do, he gets it done. rosters to maintain, he does it. he sighs. this is home and he's glad to be back.

later at the Last Assignment, he visits with friends and tells tales that were they not true, would most certainly be considered tall.

when Tinker and Pur, Nikolai, Sigvar, Anna and Trayvin all show up they add details to the stories and the night is complete.
tomorrow will take care of itself, but tonight it's good to be with friends.

ooc: goodbye my friends. it's been a wild ride, full of joy, sorrow, pain, and triumph, I will treasure this experience until my dyng days, and I will miss each of you. I leave you with a Scottish blessing.

May the road rise to meet your feet.
May the wind be ever at your back
May the rain fall soft upon your fields
and until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of his hand.

Michael Wittman is now to be considered to be on inactive status, he should be considered to be managing the Mailed Fist and the Citadel and spending time with the Griffons on Doom mountain.

Sigvar returns to the Citadel to find his students training in the yard. The one on defense seems calm and poised as the others try to pick that defense apart. He sees they have learned some new moves and that they are still improving. Good, still more work to do, but they are ready.
Sigvar walks the halls for the next few days. Hee is sadened that some of the Knight Commanders have, or will be leaving. He wishes them well. For his part he is no administrator, but is a strong mercenary that has trained with and fought beside the best there are. That will be enough. He decides that he too will remain in the Citadel and help to run the day to day actions of the Mailed Fist. With himself, Trayvin, Michael and Tinker the Fist should continue to be a resource for good in the Wold.

The Agents of the Fist.

Mercenaries. Soldiers. Heroes.

The tales of Knight Commanders Anna Morphling, Daemar Torvalsson, Michael Wittman, Nikolai Komonov, Pompous Marcus Maximus, Prudence Gundle, Sigvar IronHorn, and Trayvin Smithson will be told through the ages.

These legends brought peace to many and their noble actions gave hope that the Wold could be a better place. The lives saved cannot be counted and their impact on the Wold forever felt.

For the most part, the Knight Commanders now settle in to their role as leaders of the noble organisation - inspiring greatness in their troops and pushing them to follow the example that has been set.

For others, there are personal needs to attend to before other duties can be fulfilled.

Wherever the future may take them, the Knight Commanders will forever maintain their loyalty and friendship to each other.

It is strange how some things seem to stay relatively the same for ages, then overnight they drastically change. Take the Mailed Fist and it's new role. Take Life and Death. Nikolai was not near as bothered by his own death at the hands of Neutronis than Pru's recent experience with Death.

Having returned to the Citadel, he pondered the most recent events heavily. That powers in the Wold would entreat their own desires for more power at the expense of mortals who are treated as mere toys. It is one thing to fight against the greed for power of your own kind (mortals), it is another thing to have to put Immortals shame for their stupidity and greed.

Maybe is was time to step away from all this and take a break. Commander Palance had a point when she resigned before it was too late to enjoy SOME portion of her mortal's short life.

In private, Nikolai comes to Pru and asks, "Does your family know yet of your experience with Death? Shouldn't it be time to return home and set things right with them? I don't know what all of the issues were, but perhaps if they saw you settled down, taking to the farm much like themselves, a cottage, a family.... they could see that you are indeed normal and of their blood after all.

Er, uhm… I could help ('cough cough gulp') if you'd take me, er, uhm, as husband?"
