A Curious Scene - DM BrianZ

As you go about your routines, with a small crackle of energy, a man you have not met before storms into the office at the Alchemy Shop. Thaddeus, the manager of the site and Kreth, the gruff, scarred orc in charge of security are already in there, along with Sophie, the elderly alchemist who runs the Shop. She is busy measuring the amounts of ingredients which were dropped off and placing them in clearly marked containers.

Shortly after entering the office, there is some shouting. Those who are close enough can see that Kreth is having an argument with the newcomer, a middle-aged human male with black, greasy hair and a bit of a whiff about him. The human is clearly on edge, nervous, jittery, and upset.Kreth is yelling at him, and you can overhear the following: You cost us too much gold, Cosmo, and you give nothing back!

Kreth shakes his fist in frustration, and the man flinches and definitely thinks he is about to be attacked, though it is clear to the heroes that Kresk is just venting. The man, Cosmo, reaches into a pocket and takes out a small figurine. He tosses it on the floor in front of Kresk. It turns into an eight legged lizard, 12 feet long!!

Lothlo looks around for either a bow he can grab, or an alchemy component he can hurl that will irritate the eyes enough that the basilisk has to keep his eyes closed. If he can try to blind the creature this round, he will do so.

He runs towards the doorway, slowing when he realizes that he needs a plan. He looks around to see if there's anything that could be used to cover the beast's head: a tarpaulin, an open crate, etc.

Rhys knows nothing of basilisks but thanks to the warning from Zarsellett he now knows a little bit more. Dereliction of duty or not, he frees his curved blade from his back, closes his eyes tightly and advances towards the beast. If he can reach the creature this round he will swing at it with his sword. (hit AC 34 confirm vs AC26 for 16 +17 hp however failed 50% miss chance, Rhys has blindfight feat so he can make the miss chance roll a second time x another fail)

Naithi sees the basilisk and charges forward to grapple the basilisk. She grabs it's head and tries to tie a bag or cloth over it's eyes.

Grapple check= 340 (+2 charging and +2 flanking if applicable)
Hero point for extra action to tie up basilisk= 32 (34 if flanking) Naithi wants to tie a bag on it's head and over it's eyes. This is the best rolling option I could come up with. Note that to tie up a grappled (not pinned) opponent has a -10 penalty.

ooc: I used Camalayaas grapple check instead of Naithi's on accident and and had to add +1 to the rolls. +2 added to attacks for Maab's gift.

Cosmo jumps behind the counter, as Sophie, who is already there, ducks down. Kresk and Thaddeus run out of the office, trying to avoid being bitten by the creature.

-Burton was busy in the shop, but does hear the commotion
-Zarsellet is able to identify the creature, and lets everyone know how dangerous it can be
-Lothlo looks around, but throwing random alchemy items around in the shop might not be a good idea. He has whatever gear he brought along from the Patch
-Paige draws a weapon and moves in closer.
-Kwarsk, seeing the commotion, draws an axe and moves closer
-Fingers moves closer and looks around for a tarp or blanket. The closest ones are by the stables
-Rhys moves up to the creature and takes a powerful swipe at it. The solid blow barely misses.
-Naithi, with help from Camalayas, rushes in and grapples with the beast! As they move in, the basilisk bites at Naithi, hitting her for 7 damage. Naithi is unsuccessful grappling with the basilisk while averting her eyes(rolled 3 on concealment miss chance). If you still want to use the hero point, you may retrieve the cloth you intend to use to cover its' eyes from your pack

The basilisk, annoyed at the commotion in front of it, bites at a nearby target, hitting Naithi again for 8 damage. Naithi avoids needing to save vs the gaze this round(rolled 37, averting eyes leaves a 50% chance of needing a save)

From behind the counter you can hear Cosmo yell: NO! DON’T HURT PEGGY! SHE’S SPECIAL!!

For those moving close, completely closing your eyes avoids the gaze attack fortitude save but there is a 50% miss chance on your attack. Averting your eyes leaves a 50% chance of needing a save and 20% chance of missing your attack(concealment)

Learning from those who have identified the creature that it is a basilisk Paige moves up behind Rhys (M,26) and stands with her back to his - looking out towards the courtyard - in case the creature is a distraction. The cleric does call to her god for a blessing on her mates. (Should hit Rhys, Kwarsk, Muuru, and Naithi - and possibly NPC’s - if they are allies.)

Range 50 ft.
Area The caster and all allies within a 50-ft. burst, centered on the caster
Duration 1 min./level - so, 6 minutes
Saving Throw none; Spell Resistance yes (harmless)
Bless fills your allies with courage. Each ally gains a +1 morale bonus on attack rolls and on saving throws against fear effects.

-Fingers retrieves a large blanket from the stables
-Lothlo scoops up some stones and retrieves a sling from Camalayaas
-Zarsellet casts glitterdust at the basilisk, which it seems to resist(25), Sophie and Cosmo are still behind the counter and unaffected
-Naithi asks for an explanation and tosses flour at the creature. The could of dust will hamper vision for this round
-Paige moves in and casts bless. She can tell the spell will affect everyone in the area this time
-Kwarsk moves closer and readies to block the doorway

The basilisk moves in the only direction it can go, into the doorway. It stops when it finds something in front of it, and takes a bite, but misses Rhys.

The man continues yelling. Dont hurt Peggy! I shouldn't have left her out. Just subdue her!

Zarsellet moves closer to the door of the office. He isn't sure whether the lizard is blinded or not but knows the spell only lasts a short while. The creature still needs to be contained. Without any weapons he does what he can to assist any others that might be trying to stop it, he sings encouragement....

Kwarsk averts his eyes and steps five feet to get a clear shot at Peggy. He hears the man's call and, still wielding shield and axe, kicks at Peggy with Stunning force in her underbelly, finding her solar plexus and making her eyes close from the pain!

(OOC -
1) A Monk may use any extremity to do unarmed damage.
2) The feat "Stunning Fist" does not actually require that one use a fist.
3) Attack - d20 + 8 +1 (Bless) +2 (Inspire Courage) = 31 (Natural 20!), roll to Confirm Crit = 25, I presume Crit was confirmed, so double damage = 2d8 + 6 = 6 + 10 = 16 Subdual Damage, and see 4) next.
4) Peggy needs to roll a Fort Save, DC 16, or be stunned for 1 round, etc. as detailed below in italics.
5) 3 of 4 uses of Stunning Fist remaining today.

Stunning Fist forces a foe damaged by your unarmed attack to make a Fortitude saving throw (DC 10 + 1/2 your character level + your Wis modifier), in addition to dealing damage normally. A defender who fails this saving throw is stunned for 1 round (until just before your next turn). A stunned character drops everything held, can't take actions, loses any Dexterity bonus to AC, and takes a –2 penalty to AC. You may attempt a stunning attack once per day for every four levels you have attained (but see Special), and no more than once per round. Constructs, oozes, plants, undead, incorporeal creatures, and creatures immune to critical hits cannot be stunned.

Adding up the information she has learned about the creature from her companions, Paige pulls a 10 GP mirror from her pack. ”I have no idea if this will work…” she mumbles as she worms her way between Muuru’s front and Rhys’ back. Keeping her eyes cast down, she raises the hand holding the mirror high overhead (her cold iron weapon is in her other hand) and waves it back and forth, hoping to catch the basilisk’s attention. ”It might see it’s reflection, and think it a foe - possibly harming itself with it’s stare in the process?!” she muses optimistically.

Naithi decides the man has had enough chance to explain the snake and his actions.

Naithi casts flaming sphere at the basilisk's eyes and keeps it there to blind it. With luck it will also catch the flour on the snake's body on fire.

-Zarsellet knows his spell did not work this time. He begins a song to inspire the team
-Rhys is tired of waiting for Cosmo and hits the basilisk, hard
-Burton avoids the creature's gaze entirely by staying behind some cover
-Lothlo slings a stone at the creature, but misses
-Kwarsk kicks the basilisk in a sensitive spot. Peggy shakes off the stunning effect, but falls unconscious due to the staggering blow
-Fingers moves into position with a blanket, ready to act
-Paige attempts to trick the creature, but it is already unconscious(save the hero point)
-Naithi is aware the creature is down(you may save the spell or try to finish it off, please indicate in next post)

Cosmo jumps out from behind the counter and tries to put himself between you and Peggy. What are you doing, I said subdue, not destroy!

-Rhys tries to intimidate Cosmo. The man stutters out a reply It was snt ma mam my fault! He seems jittery and nervous
-Zarsellet can confirm that the creature is currently unconscious, and badly injured
-Naithi binds the creature, when it wakes up, it will be unable to move
-Burton looks in, to see the situation is resolved, but perhaps another is brewing
-Lothlo cleans up after the fight
-Kwarsk thinks covering the basilisk would be a good idea
-Paige stows gear away, and gives a little room in the cramped office
-Fingers....moves to drop the blanket over Cosmo's head(he is already in the room behind the counter)

Burton recognizes the magical ritual, but without training as a monstrologer, can only guess as to its' specific purpose. (Fingers take 10 can't be used this time due to needing an entire minute to observe in that manner.)

The purpose is soon clear. As you watch, Peggy shrinks down to the size of a small figurine. Cosmo then scoops the figurine up and stuffs it into his pocket. He wanders off into the warehouse stuttering, and mumbling something about 'getting her all fixed up'.

Kreth, motions for everyone to join him, if they haven't already. That was some good work yous did there. Even managed not to kill Cosmo's beast. Thank the gods, I never woulda heard the end of it. Look, I need to get him back to the compound outside the City before he causes any more trouble. You all seem pretty capable, what do you say? I can probably scrounge up some hazard pay for the trouble.

Rhys heads back to the Patch via a roundabout route through the Outcast Quarter, stopping every now and then to see if he is being followed (Perception 15). He stops by Lemmy’s, the beastfolk cafe for a bite to eat and some fine red ale. The courtyard provides a quiet and relaxing environment where the elf can forget about his worries for the moment. By mid-day he returns to the compound to meet up with the rest of the crew to receive their final instructions for delivering Cosmo and collects a potion of Cat’s Grace from Sophie.

Rhys has hall of his regular adventuring equipment with him. ”So just how far is this place? Do we need rations and bedrolls or is this just a day trip?” he asks.

Paige hangs around the compound and watches Cosmo for a bit, trying to get a sense of the fellow. detect evil. When she’s taken the measure of the man, she strikes out for Nightmare Quarter and home.

It’s a long shot, but she cruises by the Crypt, and if the gambling establishment is open, she says ‘Hi!’ to Zolbur, before helping herself to some of the free food. Later, at the Patch she adds some of the bandages she and the small, quiet, orphan named Allum made, to her healers kit. Satisfied that all is as it should be, she returns to her new place of employment, and checks in with Sophie.

”I’ll have what he’s having!” she says to the alchemist, pointing at Kwarsk.

Fingers chooses a Potion of Cure Moderate Wounds. Sooner or later, Paige won't be close enough to heal him. (Or may need to be brought back to consciousness herself).

He can explain why he has a crossbow, but probably not his scrolls and wand -- so he takes the time to conceal them in his quiver along with the crossbow bolts.

-Zarsellet collects his gear, has a bite to eat, and receives the potion of see invisibility
-Lothlo grabs his gear and has an interesting snack. Sophie provides the potion of flying as requested
-Rhys is watchful for observers, though none are noticed. The food is good and the beastfolk are happy to see him. Rhys is told the trip takes 2 days. It can be completed in one, but that adds some danger. He recieves the potion of cat's grace from Sophie
-Kwarsk selects a potion of flying, then enjoys a quiet lunch.
-Paige does a little detective work before leaving. Cosmo is not evil. He still seems out of sorts though. Zolbur is very welcoming and invites you to dine in his office. The food is better than what is served to the average guests. Paige receives a potion of flying and Sophie seems to be glad that she made a fresh batch recently
-Fingers selects a potion of cure moderate wounds, just in case. He conceals any equipment that he feels should remain hidden, and has a nice lunch on the way back
-Naithi prepares for the trip. She also finds that the shop is well stocked, and is able to get the requested magic oil of ghost weapon
-Burton talks to Cosmo about the ritual. The monstrologer perks up at the inquiry and happily explains that it is really more of a spell than a ritual, but with a longer casting time. You s-see, I can shrink a monster, just like a shrink it-ahem, item spell! Burton is expected to go along, and may choose a potion

Once everyone has gathered, Thaddeus approaches the group. Allright, so you will be escorting Cosmo and we also need two empty wagons taken back. He points at the stables area near the front of the shop, where two wagons are ready, already hitched to horses. Simple enough. We'll have some coin for you upon your return for doing this service. Try to keep Cosmo out of trouble. Just take the elevators out of the City, after that, Cosmo will lead you to the Compound. Any questions?

Well, he is not in specific danger, but the road is sometimes dangerous. And of course, the Alliance will pay for all the tolls.

He has plenty of control. It didn't turn anyone to stone did it? Anyway, it shouldn't be a problem.

Threats? Well there is nothing specific, though we do have enemies. Just be vigilant. Oh and make sure no one follows you to the Compound. We wouldn't want THAT information getting out.

Distracted by the conversation he calms a bit but after he finishes speaking, becomes nervous and jittery again. Looking around, he asks if it is time to leave.

The team loads up into the wagons and is underway. Cosmo seems a bit relieved to finally get moving.

Rhys is driving one of the horse-drawn wagons and Fingers controls the other. Cosmo rides in whichever one is in front, to lead the way. You already know the way to the elevators, but that doesn't stop him from excitedly stuttering out directions and when to turn.

The wagons do contain a small amount of supplies. A few blankets, coils of rope, and enough food and water to last about 3 days. Before leaving, Cosmo received a purse of coin for the tolls, and Burton picks up his potion.

Zarsellet and Burton continue to discuss magic with Cosmo. He seems distracted and unfocused, but you manage to have him explain that as a monstrologer, he can try to breed enhanced abilities into the offspring of a monster, among other things. He returns his focus to the road and his level of agitation increases whenever the wagons need to slow down due to crowds or other obstacles.

The elevators proceed as normal, and a few other passengers smile in amusement at anyone who is obviously here for the first time, and looking around like a tourist. The workers are used to dealing with animals, horses and donkeys and keep them all calm. The horses seem especially calm under Rhys' care and are not the least bit skittish.

Cosmo is unconvinced with Zarsellet's observation and simply sulks and says We're not out of the City yet.

He seems to be caught unprepared for Paige's question. Which boss? He stutters a bit. He gently pats a hand on his pocket before continuing. Ah yes, well anyway, it's all approved. I don't get as much funding for my umm experiments as I used to but they want to see what I might be able to do. I'm thinking about trying to give her special powers. Maybe flight? or tentacles. He looks around at his escort before continuing. Or maybe just the ability to look at allies without turning them to stone. As finishes speaking, he becomes sullen again, and stares at the workers, as if silently wishing they would speed this along.

Looking around as the elevators continue their work, you get the distinct impression of being watched.

Hearing the comment about the basilisk being able to look at someone and not petrify them gets his attention again. "Look at allies and not turn them to stone? That would be great! I'm sure there are other creatures that'd like that ability too! Have you tried a second eyelid? Maybe if there's something in the gaze, a special almost invisible light that comes out of the basilisk's eyes? If it could be filtered without shutting out all light? Might be funny seeing goggles on a basilisk, but if it worked.... Right!?!"

Paige and Rhys look around.....there are a number of birds around the elevators as usual, many of them nesting in the cliffs. But one of them seems to be showing a little bit of unusual behavior. A black raven perches on a nearby outcropping of rock and seems to be watching the group. As the elevators descend, the same one flies lower, finds a new perch and watches some more. Eventually it notices that it is being observed, and flies off. Or maybe it spotted a tasty treat.

Was it really watching? Or just a trick of the imagination?

Zarsellet, Lothlo, and Burton continue to engage Cosmo in conversation, inquiring about the 'upgrades'. Oh no, not goggles. I mean ac-tual enhancements directly to Peggy. It would take some time and experimenting, but many t-things could be possible. Cosmo goes back to daydreaming, hopefully not about adding tentacles.

Kwarsk and Fingers have a quick side discussion. Cosmo seems completely preoccupied with his own conversation and the fact that the elevators don't seem to be moving quickly enough for his liking. Fortunately for him, you will soon be at the bottom.

Cosmo indicates north, and you steer the wagons in that direction on the road towards Middleden.

He occasionally mumbles as you travel, as if counting landmarks. Pretty soon, another hour perhaps. Then we get to the exciting part.

Lothlo and Burton ask about the raven. Well, I don't pay much attention to animals really. My focus and training is in monsters and monster lore. No, I don't recall anything about darkly eyed birds. Hmm I wonder if that's something I could use to enhance Peggy's gaze? His thoughts seem to wander again but you do notice his behavior has changed noticeably since leaving the City. He much calmer, and the stutter is gone.

As Kwarsk looks around, he notices Cosmo looks around too. There is no one on the road within sight. Cosmo looks back to the road, and seems to be mentally counting something.
Ah, yes here we are. Or close enough anyway. He points Rhys to a small break in the trees. Make a left there, in that space large enough to fit the wagons. We're going into the Preserve.

Cosmo replies to Paige, Well, it's not precisely marked you know. But I have been this way several times, and I'm pretty sure we won't get lost.

Burton checks his notes, and Zarsellet tries to recall his knowledge of the area. You can't be certain, but it seems likely Cosmo means the Monster Preserve, which is located in this area.(OOC- can be found on the Woldipedia map)

Kwarsk keeps a lookout for a possible ambush. Nothing so far, but the Monster Preserve is known to be dangerous.

Fingers heard the comment, and with some quick thinking, marks the spot. Cosmo doesn't seem to notice.

Rhys takes some time to steer the wagons carefully into the opening, and scuffs a tree in the process.

Cosmo replies to Naithi, I'm sorry if I wasn't clear. I can only enhance creatures which are monsters. My abilities simply don't work on animals or people. You lot have given me some fine ideas though for Peggy. I am looking forward to working with her.

It is slower going now, off the road. But by the estimate you had been given previously, you should be where Cosmo is leading you in a few hours, before it gets dark.

As they travel on, Lothlo thinks about how wonderful it would be to create a monster that's part pig and part centipede, so that you have 600 bbq ribs and and sides of bacon with each one

When he notices the forest get quiet and the chirping start he readies his bow and scans for the bird that seems to be following them, or any other threats that may be surrounding them, preparing a ricochet shot if it appears the danger is hiding behind a tree.

Cosmo appears to concentrate for a few moments. Hmm, it sounds a little like an axe beak, but it is off somehow.

A few moments later, there a crashing sound through the underbrush. An axe beak does come crashing through the forest, directly across the 'road' that you are on. It is followed shortly by a small pack of gnolls which are chasing it, and then by a leucrotta which continues to mimic the chirping of an axe beak. Some of the creatures glance your way, but they are focused on what they are doing and do not stop.

Ah, that explains it. The leucrotta was copying their chirping sound. Anyway, don't worry. I'm pretty sure nothing will attack as long as I'm with you. Shall we continue?

The 2 wagon caravan continues along. Every so often, Cosmo notes an oddly shaped tree-stump, a clearing with a tree in the middle of it, a large, shaped boulder or some other landmark that he seems to be following. If any of the Patchers decide to 'mark' any of these locations somehow, Cosmo either doesn't notice, or makes no mention of it if he does.

As you travel there are occasional rumblings in the brush, or odd chirps, squawks, yelps, growls or howls. But whatever is making those noises always seems to be just out of sight. Cosmo is completely unconcerned about the noises and merrily chats about how he caught Peggy 'not that far from here' or other creatures he tried to capture. He seems completely at ease in this place, a far removal from his behavior in the City.

An hour later, and you reach an area where the canopy is much more dense and the lighting level drops almost, but not quite to what would be considered low-light. Cosmo insists this is the way, but a little bit further the forest suddenly grows much quieter. As uncanny as the sounds of the various creatures were, now that they are absent, maybe it is worse? Cosmo stops explaining the possible origins of creatures which seem to have been mated with magic and looks around. Hmm, now that's peculiar.

This me reminds me of....well no it couldn't be that. That happened a long time ago. Surely it's forgotten all about that misunderstanding. Or maybe not.

As Cosmo finishes speaking, something moves through the underbrush and trees. Something....large. As it gets closer, you can see multiple eyes and they seem to all be staring at Cosmo as if in recognition.

Cosmo says Ah, we may have to drive it off. But don't kill it, that is very important, trust me.

The 'creature' is a type of giant spider. You can see it more clearly as it approaches, very large and covered in some type of fur. Continuing to look menacingly at Cosmo, it moves closer, and then decides a horse will be a tastier treat than the monstrologer.

The spider attacks a horse, killing it with one bite. It then tries to drag the horse off, but it is still attached to the other horse and wagon!

Despite this, Cosmo still urges that it needs to be driven off, but not killed. You may have to hurt it a little, but please, be careful!

Naithi can't believe that she didn't see this thing sneaking up on her, and that she couldn't identify it as a spider until just now. She briefly envisions grappling the spider, but realizes that it would be impossible.

Having already jumped off her horse, she punches the spider to release some of her anger.

-Paige casts a spell, and a spiritual mace smashes at the spider, the result however is less than desired as it does not quite penetrate the armored carapace this time
-Rhys moves in, and, since he is the first to do so, the spider bites at him, not wanting to lose its' prize. Rhys is hit for 18 damage(need a fort save please, DC is 24). Once closer, Rhys does connect twice, one of the hits takes satisfying chunk of a leg
-Zarsellet continues to inspire, and starts cutting the ropes tethering the dead horse
-Burton fires his wand at the spider, causing some fire damage
-Kwarsk makes an acrobatic move out of the wagon, and hustles into position near the spider
-Lothlo launches a series of arrows at the spider, but they fail to penetrate the creature's tough carapace this time

It's not a fully developed magical discipline yet you know.

After rigging up the front wagon to accommodate only one horse, the small caravan gets underway again. Paige heals the team and Zarsellet gets everyone moving with a mostly quiet marching song. Many keep an eye out for danger, just in case the spider or something else decides to cause a ruckus.

As you travel, the occasional odd noise or motion of 'something' deeper in the forest is present, but no other creatures come close enough to cause any alarm.

Cosmo, is happy to continue discussing his vocation and he seems quite proud of it. His former uneasiness and odd behavior is now completely gone, replaced by a demeanor which shows he is sure of himself and confident of his ability. (speaking directly to Burton, but he doesn't seem to mind if anyone else listens in) Ah yes, that spell. It is one of my favorites. It is a type of dominate spell that monstrologers can learn. I find it invaluable in my field of work. Are you learned with magic? I might be able to take on an apprentice eventually. That could prove useful at times.

Continuing along, as the wagons roll through the brush, the sounds of something large making its' way through the forest grows closer, and louder. The creature is not making any attempt to disguise its' passage.

As the creature stumbles near, Cosmo calls for a halt. Stepping out of the brush, you see a huge slithering, multilegged blue reptile which has a fearsome head crowned with two large, curling horns. It looks at the wagons with obvious malice and appears ready to attack. But then it spots Cosmo and waits. With a signal from the monstrologer, the creature reluctantly turns away and heads back into the forest.

Hmm, that went well. Apparently it remembers our last meeting. I will need to remember to continue bringing bribes with me when venturing out. Cosmo motions to get moving again. We're getting close, not too far now.

Cosmo, I'm sure we will all breath easier once inside the compound, but from your concern does that mean we need to be on the lookout for some sort of monstrous owl trying to swoop down on us from above in near silence? Cosmo answers Rhys, with a small amount of alarm. Edgy? Why I would guess you were selected to join as a guard for exactly those sorts of qualities. Erm, we really should get moving again.

That was no owl of course, it was a warning call from a dinosaur. Not the dangerous kind, but when they hoot like that it means a predator is about. And predators around here tend to be the sort of thing you don't want to run into. So looking out is fine, but moving along is better.

As for plans, there are none, specifically. I expect you'll be sent out on these very same wagons once they are loaded and ready to go for the next caravan.

As the wagons continue on their way, the sounds of the hooting and honking dinosaurs diminish, and hopefully whatever predator was after them is also further away.

Another thirty minutes of travel brings you to the Compound. The first thing you'll be able to take note of, is that the perimeter is lined with the same magical fencing that keeps the various creatures of the monster preserve from entering the roads in the region and threatening travel. The Compound would appear to be safe from random attacks from anything that lives in the preserve due to this protected zone.

You can see several buildings, a few people moving about and the sounds of hammers and chisels can be heard, not far off. As you enter the Zone, a guard waves in recognition of Cosmo and indicates the wagons should go to a building which appears to be a stable. Near the stable, a Satyr seems to be giving instructions to some workers.

Cosmo dismounts from the wagon and stretches his legs. Ahh, yes. It's good to be back. What do you think?

Lothlo watches in anticipation as the safety of the fence draws near. A few minutes later he finds everyone inside the gate's safety and he feels he is able to breath a little easier.
Wow, I've never seen magical fences like this. I suppose they are necessary considering everything we've seen wandering around outside.

I also have a question. Why build in the middle of the preserve? Wouldn't it be safer at the side of the road? Or at least closer to it?

Yes, the fence keeps all the predators out, along with creatures that are less dangerous, but still considered monsters.

We needed to be further away from the road, to keep from prying eyes. The preserve naturally prevents most people from finding us. And for me, it gives direct access to continue to further my research.


Cosmo points at the Satyr by the stables. That's Zoz. Why don't you leave the wagons near the stables and then check in with him. His people will take care of the horses. I need to report in, and then check on my experiments.

As you approach the stables, there is a shimmering in the air before you. As you watch a portal opens. Looking inside, you see what looks like a festive tavern, filled with people eating, drinking and having a lot of fun. You may choose to step inside if you wish....
