You begin again the next morning with a renewed sense of purpose. Aiden puts out a call for heroic tales, and Yanosh and Rendel respond.
Yngvar, having sacrificed much of his own comfort to watch over his companions, presses on. Olaf uses his spells to help protect the party, and keeps a watchful eye on the weather.
Heyoka is able to find the faint traces of the Walkers' passing, and she and Aiden continue leading the group toward the Jagged Jaws. You leave the snowfield behind, and begin journeying through light forest.
By midmorning, you have the strong sensation that you are not alone. Somewhere in the forest, something watches you. Perhaps, more than one something.

Unsure as to what is hunting them, as pedator to prey, Heyoka mutters to Fisher "Guard and Track" Which makes him more aware of his surroundings. At this point, he know the scents of her companions, so will filter those out for anythign else, not food, that is lurking in the area around them. He will most likely stay by her side, unless he finds an unknown scent to follow. The Guard order will keep him within a quick run to be by her side in case of a fight, but she will not stop him fo doing his job.
Heyoka lpans to fish tonight if possible. Fisher deserves a treat.

Listening to the stories, Aiden looked for inspiration, perhaps there was some pearl of wisdom that would help him on their quest. Or even some sort of diversion, that moment of thought away from the current task so that perhaps the temporary mental respite would allow him to figure out where the Walkers were, and, when they caught up with them, what to do...
"THank you for your stories...I shall tell one from the Tusks tomorrow eve..." Chuckling, "a story for a story..."

Aiden's eyebrows furrowed as he heard the news from Yngvar. "That is good to know..." as he clapped the fellow tracker on the back.
"Can you tell me direction or what it is..." he asked.
His smile grew even more as apparently Heyoka had kept them on the trail better than he. "Sometimes it is not magic but just a different eye..." Aiden responded, even as he looked down at his wolven companion and chuckled, "or nose...". "That was what my fath-...teacher taught me..."

Sensing the nervousness of Yanosh, Olaf starts to fidget with the straps on his buckler. He contemplates the possibility of ambush or surprise, and considers getting his hunting bow off his back. A measure of indecision in his eyes, his left hand creeps up the dull metal coin about his neck, and idly flips it [2 = snowflake]. Gaining some resolve from this obscure ritual, Olaf takes his hunting bow off his back, strings it, and carries it loosely as they walk.
He growls, "Well, um, Aiden and er, Heyoka, you seem to be good at finding these tracks. The Powers of the Vein might be able to help a bit more, if yous be needing them. Just let me know." Olaf will cast his second Toro's Taur Try (Centaur) on either of them if asked.

Thinking that they may have caught up with their friends the orks or whatever is watching them might be friendly.

Aiden looks completely shocked by what Rendal had said. The ork chieftain, to his knowledge, did NOT want to speak to the Tundra Walkers. The Walkers would easily annex the other group of orks, something that would actually work against what was a development of good relations (at least the beginnings thereof) between human and ork.
Added to that was the fact that they were more than likely NOT going to be friendly...however, he reined his reactions. Perhaps he could work this, a challenge of their champion for the Shield...
Perhaps...but right now, he needed to get things back in order, at least until the company arrives...

DM Simon Monday October 22nd, 2007 3:08:10 AM
Aided by his companions, Aiden continues to track the Walkers through the snow, whose trail seemingly leads deeper into the coniferous woods.
Yngvar tries to alert the party to his suspicions, and they all have the same sensation of being watched as he.
Heyoka stays close to Fisher. The great bear sniffs the air around as he walks, sensing the same as his companions, but he does not yet pick up on a strange scent.
Yanosh treads carefully, slowing pulling free his War Axe, he looks carefully into the woods around them, but does not see any movement.
Sensing the same tension in the air as the party, and calling on the fates for guidance, Olaf also loosens his weapon, holding the bow as the party walks.
After asking the party if they or the animals can see anything in the winter woodlands, Rendal shouts through the crisp air, his voice carrying well and echoing around the silent forest, much to [b]Aiden's[b] frustration and surprise.
-----------------------------
There is no reply to the call, but it does draw your attention to how silent the woods are. No bird calls, and snow falls softly through the sparse treetops. The sense of being watched continues as you slowly make your way along the trail left by the Tundra Walkers. You make slow progress, but after an hour of walking, the trail you follow becomes clearer. Anyone can now follow the tracks left by your prey. After another few minutes, the ground becomes covered in tracks. Although covered somewhat by fresh snowfall, it is clear that many creatures have been here.
Many patches of blood stain the snow, though it is difficult to determine how long ago it was spilled, as the blood is kept fresh by the cold. There are no bodies here, but the trail of blood becomes clearer still. It leads along in the same direction you have been heading, accompanied by many footprints and something being dragged through the snow hastily.
A DC 13 Track check reveals other footprints, bestial, leading off in several different directions from the scene.
------------------------------
ooc: I did not react too much to Rendal's shouts, in case some players are not clear to your mission. The Tundra Walkers are certainly not friendly, and you chase them as you believe they carry The Shield of Domi. The Orcs that you met recently, in the village, were different to these Walkers. At least, this is my understanding.
Ok, some of you are posting regularly, so my thanks for that. You will need the whole party (I make it 6 active players) to keep up regular posting over the next few weeks, to keep the game balanced.
Also, I have sent an email requesting one or two more details about some characters. Please get back to me ASAP. Thanks for the character sheets - they look good to me.

And then he stood, "but then again, I have seen and been taught many new things on this trail. If you are right, then that is less of our blood on the ground this day."
He still was not going to put his axe away, and looked at his packsister to see her reactions.
ooc: and the die roller strikes again! At least it's not in battle this time.
DM Simon Tuesday October 23rd, 2007 4:20:04 AM Yngvar studies the tracks and the blood a little longer, trying to decipher exactly what has been dragged through the snow. Whatever it was that was dragged was heavy, and bleeding badly, as the trail of blood through the snow deepens as it heads along the trampled trail.
Worried about the return of whatever left the other tracks, Olaf suggests quickly following the clear and bloody trail further into the forest.
As the rearguard of the group, Yanosh sees and hears little, but suggests it will not be Orcs that leave the obvious trail.
Heyoka instructs Fisher to follow the blood trail by scent. The red marks are clear though covered by a dusting of fresh snow, and Fisher is keen to hurry along the trail, his keen senses pulling him on.
Rendal defends his shout, explaining his belief that violence is not always the answer, and a friendly gesture can avoid a fight.
Bending to study the tracks, Aiden is able to determine that a fight took place here between humanoids and four-legged creatures of some sort, and that some Orcs left along the trail they have been making in a hurry, and some were much slower. Also, they dragged a humanoid along, which left a deep trail of blood. This was left no more than an hour ago. The packsister begins barking, looking down the trail.
---------------------------
The snow and the thickening trees prevent any but Olaf from seeing far down the trail, but something has gained the interest of Fisher and the wolf. The trail can be easily followed, and was left no more than hour ago. Olaf can see that the bloody marks get worse -- whatever was bleeding has lost a great deal.

Moving a little closer to the corpse on the track, Olaf and Rendal see that it is indeed quite dead. No creature could lose this much blood and survive. They keep hidden well in the pale shadows on the thick snow.
The rest of the party move further along the trail, unaware that the scouts have found anything. As they catch up, they see that the three figures of Rendal, Olaf and the Wolf have stopped to look at a bundle on the ground.

Listening carefully Rendal tries to ascertain where or what is making the noise. It is one he can not recognise, and all he can gather is that the noises come from different places around half a mile deeper into the woods, but generally in the direction the party are heading in. He can see no enemy.
Consulting with the fates once more, Olaf approaches the body of the Orc. His keen senses notice more tracks leading into the wood along the trail, and splashes of more blood can be seen with the marks of passage heading way from the corpse. As he searches, more howls can be heard, seeming no closer.
His search of the body is thorough, and he finds terrible wounds that have broken the Orc's body. Flesh has been torn from the body by savage teeth. He carries an axe, no blood marking its crude edge. Any other possessions that this corpse carried in life have been taken from him in death.
Yanosh moves to the front of the group, Axe in hand, anticipation of a fight provoking a soft hum from his lips.

The party catch up with the scouts, and find Olaf searching the corpse. As you look around to see the tracks move further into the woods, another howl is heard ahead, still around half a mile and not, seemingly, coming any closer.

Aiden nodded as he listened to the comments and suggestions. Eyes narrowing, he looked at the ork's body to see what piercings or tribe that he may have belonged to at one time. Was he of the Uroc Frio...or a Tundra Walker...or even as of yet, an unknown warlord?
Aiden looked at the corpse one more time. Were the bites what killed the ork, or weapon? Something had taken whatever adornments were on him...

The ages old hatred of Orcs rises in his blood causing him to crave battle with them. The warrior in him fears no Orc, The Cleric in him accepts death as a possible end. "No one seems to want ask the question that needs asking," Yanosh states flatly. Turning to Aiden, "What is their number and are they carrying anything with them?" Yanosh try's to find out if they fallow a warrior band or a village on the move. A Warrior band would be nothing to fight compared to a village where even the females and young will fight to defend if needed.

"Its good you're asking Aiden, Yanosh, as I have a hard time simply tracking the orcs," states Yngvar.
DM Simon Saturday October 27th, 2007 4:20:17 AM Illegal weekend post to move on story and respond to tracking queries
The party study the area and its tracks. So far the trail has been easy to follow but difficult to understand; there are so many footprints. The group also discuss what to do with the corpse.
Yngvar and Rendal suggest quickly moving on, following the tracks. It is from this direction that you hear further howling.
Thinking that something needed to be done, Olaf and Heyoka cast create water, following a few divine words by Olaf. He skillfully moulds the water around the body as it freezes. Within seconds the body is encased with a thin layer of ice that binds it to the ground.
Old blood stirring in him, Yanosh has battle on his mind, and enquires with the trackers as to the number of enemies they chase.
With great care and skill, using his knowledge of Orcs to aid his observations, Aiden studies the trampled prints that leave the area. He ascertains the following:
A large number of tracks, approximately 15, all Orc, led you to the corpse. There was also the marks of something being dragged, and a solid line of blood which led to the body on the floor.
The corpse has been left here, and from this site you can discern more tracks, all heading in the same direction. The first is of a large group (around 12) Orcs who left in a hurry. The second trail, heading in the same direction but left more recently, consists of 3 Orcs who also left splashes of blood. They moved more slowly. The corpse is a Tundra Walker, and was killed by bites from an animal, which has left fatal open wounds on the body.
As you slow down to study the Orc, the tracks and freeze the corpse to the ground, you hear more howling from ahead. It is similar to a wolf's howl, yet of a lower pitch. Packsister and Fisher look up again, eager to chase down the trail. Through the still air, you all hear what might be some shouting, around half a mile down the trail and moving further away.
------------------------
I will allow additional posts over the weekend so we can move the story on. My next DM post will be on Monday but later than usual (evening most probably.) Sorry for those of you that can't post over the weekend -- I just want to move the story on quickly. If you think I'm being unfair, please let me know and we'll work around it :)
Aiden Saturday October 27th, 2007 7:55:54 AM
Aiden relays what he reads of the tracks to the others, "it was a tundra walker...and there are more than I first read."
And then he heard the howl. (OOC: what would I roll to see if I can identify it as a wolf howl or something mimicking it (like a winter wolf or dire wolf)?)
"Some ork raiders used large wolves to ride and " as his voice lowered, "I heard and seen some that work with demon wolves. Those that breath ice and speak the tongue of ork and human..."
He actually shivered slightly at that last thought.
"Fisher and packsister seem eager to join into the battle..." as his eyes seemed to shine with eagerness. "What do you say?" as he brought it to the group...
Olaf [Wis -1] Saturday October 27th, 2007 9:49:07 AM
Olaf unconsciously nods his head while listening to Aiden. "Well, I'm thinkin' that those wolves are awful big. Wouldn't mind me one o' them furs, though---that'd fetch a pretty price."
Shaking his head, he continues, "So, either way, I 'magine we'd best be seein' what caused all this commotion. And probably keepin' scouts on the lookout as we go."

Although the young ranger can withstand the brutal weather with ease, it would seem he has a bit of trouble deciding which is virgin snow and which is the trail.
DM Simon Monday October 29th, 2007 3:46:52 PM Aiden recognises the howling as something akin to a wolf, but the pitch is different; louder somehow, lower. He considers the tales he has heard of wolves that breath ice and actually speak. The thoughts unnerve him.
The group leader suggests moving on, but waits for a response from the party. Olaf agrees with the idea of following the clear tracks, but suggests keeping the scouts ahead.
Busying herself with ensuring they know their way back, Heyoka casts Know Direction.
While waiting for a decision, Yngvar keeps studying the tracks. There is little more to glean from the markings in the snow. To the trackers, the trail and its makers are now clear.
The whole party hear further baying from up the trail ahead. Through the still and cold air, Heyoka also clearly hears some shouting. She does not understand the language, but can tell from the pitch they are shouts of desperation. You estimate they come from near the same place as the bestial howl.

Turning to the group, "This is how I see it." Yanosh's eyes scan them as he speaks, "What ever it was that killed the orc here is also chasing those that we seek. Given time it will weaken their numbers and allow us an easier victory over them. But it also means that we have another enemy out here that is very strong and could possibly destroy us all. We are weak in the area of healing with Garrett not here and I have not even tried to see if I can heal yet. If we go on we must decide how we do it. But enter this fight I feel we must. In the way of healing, I can also heal a little. Let us get going fast. A jog would be good.. as long as we know the wolves are ahead of us."

DM Simon Tuesday October 30th, 2007 3:35:05 PM
Considering the possibilty of leaving the Orcs to be weakened by a foe, Yanosh decies it is time for battle, grips his axe, and begins humming that familiar tune.
Rendal, Yngvar and Aiden agree that time is of the essence now, and urge the party quickly along the trail. Fisher seems alert now, pleased perhaps to be on the move, and Heyoka wastes no time in calling the great bear to the hunt.
--------------------
The party run for around five minutes, the howls continuing and getting louder. Yngvar and Yanosh also begin to hear the shouts of others, and they know for sure that the voices are Orc.
Five minutes along the trail seems a long time, but soon, through falling snow and slightly denser forest. The ground is a long, slight rise, and when you reach the top, looking slightly down, you see the figures of three Orcs with their backs to one another. They each wield crude yet large axes, and are dressed as the corpse was. A keen eye can see that they move with difficulty, as if injured.
They have not yet spotted you, as their attention is drawn elsewhere. A sudden howl, louder than those you have so far heard, reveals the location of one beast, beneath the snowy canopy of a tall fir. It is a wolf, yet larger, and stark white. It watches the three Orcs in their defensive formation, and pays you no heed.
A spot check against DC 16 reveals two more such wolves at different points around the small clearing in which the Orcs stand, behind trunks of other trees.
You are around 100' from the Orcs, 70' from the nearest wolf. None of the creatures is looking at you, and the trail between the top of the rise on which you stand and the clearing is fairly clear, though conifers are all around the area. The wolves, for now, do not move.
Fisher and the wolf both growl at the scene.

[ooc: Olaf has not encounter the white wolves before.]
Olaf attempts to survey the scene. [ spot 14, doesn't see small wolves ] The pale white coat of the Winter Wolf strikes a certain fear in his heart, though the trapper in him knows the value of that hide could allow a family to live well for a year.
He whispers to Aiden, seeking guidance: "Should we aim to kill them, or see what transpires here first?" After receiving the answer, he readies his shortbow, then gestures to Rendal, the other impromptu scout, to sneak slightly closer with him, getting within 60' of the nearest wolf.
Yngvar the not so very tall Wednesday October 31st, 2007 8:45:15 AM
"If we help defend the orcs would they regard our quest kindly?" the ranger asks.
"I don't own a ranged weapon," he goes on. "It isn't an honorable way to fight."
Heyoka Wednesday October 31st, 2007 1:01:00 PM
Calling Fisher to 'Heel,' she stops, and looks at Aiden.
"Do we fight the Wolves, or the Orcs? Obviously, these are the ones we were tracknig to kill. The wolves, while I'm tempted to help, are not Normal, in the Natural sense.
Who do we pick to fight?"
DM Simon d20+6=21 d20+6=26 d20+6=9 Wednesday October 31st, 2007 2:32:06 PM Yanosh shares his knowledge of the beasts with the party, and Yngvar poses the idea of helping your prey.
As the party watches, trying to decide what to do, and Olaf moves just a little closer, the wolf you have seen senses movement from the corner of its eye. It turns to face you, then bows its muzzle before turning to face the Orcs again. Raising its head now, it allows another howl. Two more wolves burst from the edge of the trees, running at the Orcs. Instead of attacking they run past the three figures, as if playing or taunting. They show more intelligence than you have seen in animals before. They enter the trees again and leave your view, though the one you first saw still stands in plain sight.
Fisher complies with Heyoka's request to heel, but shares in Packsister's clear desire to fight.
Yanosh-AC20--HP50/50 Wednesday October 31st, 2007 4:30:01 PM
"Someone keep an eye on those two," Yanosh whispers. "The Tundra Walkers will not give up what we want willingly. We kill them as well." Clenching his War Axe Yanosh awaits Aidens orders to attack. Picking out his first target Yanosh eyes the closest orc farthest from a wolf.
Rendal Wednesday October 31st, 2007 5:07:07 PM
"Well I guess sneaking up is out of the question. Are these wolves on our side or are they evil as well?"
"I am ready either way. Though I can get the information out of them if one of them is alive. So I would suggest that we help the orks kill the wolves if they are evil."

DM Simon 4d6(5+3+6+4)=18 Thursday November 1st, 2007 1:29:04 PM Yanosh prepares for battle, waiting for an order that doesn't come. Aiden has seen these beasts before, instructing an attack against the Demon Wolves, and he watches as his wolf growls more at the scene. The wolf has been following the Orc scent so far, but now with another potential foe she Aiden senses she loathes both groups.
Rendal suggests attacking the Wolves also, while Olaf casts some aiding magic on himself and moves closer to the Orcs. As he moves, two of the large wolves burst forth from the treeline, and run straight at the Orcs. The foremost wolf howls again, louder than before, a noise which echoes through the forest and would carry for a long distance, before running himself at the party of shouting Orcs.
The Orcs try and hack at the creatures with their axes, one of which manages to slice through white fur and flesh. In response, the first wolf roars, and you see ice burst from its muzzle, as if the air itself freezes towards the victims. None of the Orc's falls, but they almost stumble to the ground, but Aiden and Yanosh have seen this deadly attack before.
-------------
The Orcs are engaged in melee with the Winter Wolves now. The party, apart from Olaf, are around 100' from the fight. Trees tower above you, and provide cover if required. All the Orcs seem badly hurt; one wolf has blood seeping down its flank.

OOC: First of all, apologies for my lack of post on Friday. No excuse -- I was at a Foo Fighters gig in Manchester, and I just forgot to let you know. Thanks for your patience.
I have a few things to mention from your posts. Firstly, I have tried to carry out what actions you have stated, although you need to be more specific with some of your actions. E.g.., let me know what square you want to move to using Grid references, and which enemy you are attacking. I assumed Rendal was attacking the closest wolf, but you didn't specify in the post.
Please remember that most of you do not have movement of 30', as you are encumbered or short :) Also remember, that if you are moving and hiding you can only move at half your standard speed. If anyone has posted more than one standard action with a move, I have ignored the second action. Please try and keep to the usual amount of actions in a round. If you want Fisher / Packsister to attack, you will need to post for them, treating them as if they are characters and posting AC / HP as normal.
Olaf -- excellent post and you included all the info I needed, so many thanks!
Sorry if I sound like a pain, but I want combat to flow well. If you are unhappy with anything I have done with your character, please let me know before this time tomorrow.

Olaf continues sneaking forward to S7 [hide 21, move silently 15], and readies an action to fire his shortbow on WW2 if it starts advancing (moves into or through the "X" column). If so, hits AC 12 for 2+3 sneak attack damage.

Aiden, Yanosh and Olaf continue moving forward through the snow, as Rendal sings his entrancing song. Lights appear, seemingly drawing the farthest two winter wolves' attention. Winter Wolves initiative
Winter Wolf 1 sees his companions sitting and watching lights, and is angered. He roars at the party, in two minds whether to attack or not. He sees the party spread out, advancing, and decides he needs his allies. The wolf then begins to shout, a guttural and deep voice that carries through the light snow.
"I hate when this happens."
He then moves quickly back to Winter Wolf 3, grabs him by the scruff of the neck with his teeth, and shakes him quickly.

Wolf 2 also blinks as if shock, wondering what was going on and why his brothers were not attacking yet. With a bark and growl, it lurches forward towards the man it sees creeping forward with a bow ready. Spot 23, Listen 13. Olaf fires his bow, readied when he had the chance, but the arrow just misses the head of the wolf as it moves into combat.

"Mayhap we've got ourselves a misunderstandin', here," he shouts to the clearly sentient wolves. "I'm thinkin' you jus' want some Orc meat, which we be happy to yield ya."

Yanosh moves forward, a weapon in hand and a song in his voice. Meanwhile, Rendal continues trying to distract Wolf 1 with his spell.
Rushing to attack, Yngvar finds he just able to reach Wolf 2. He manages to hot and draws blood. You notice close up that this particular wolf is already crossed with wounds, delivered by Orc axes. It yelps in pain.
Heyoka steps closer to Yanosh, and watches Fisher rush to attack Wolf 2 also. (ooc: The bear cannot attack this round -- I will use rolls next round or you can roll again.)
Aiden waits. His wolf , however, races through the companions, moving to the side of Wolf 2 also, the pack instinct overwhelming in him. He tries to flank with Fisher.

[ooc: Olaf would attempt to tumble the 30' to Fisher and discharge the charged cure light wounds if DM Simon would allow it---this touch would be one too many actions for the turn, I think. Anyway, if it is allowed, he uses the guidance bonus to tumble to T9 (next to Fisher). Fisher manages to stay on his feet, despite the horrific wounds he is suffering, and slashes into the wolf with huge claws and teeth. The wolf roars in agony as his body is almost torn apart by the bear.
Yanosh moves close to White Wolf 3, and manages one attack. His axe cuts deeply into the wolf's shoulder. (ooc: Yanosh can only attack once after moving, and is not flanking yet. Even so, his first attack does hit.)
Casting Create Water, Heyoka tries to make the ground slippery for Wolf 3. The water soaks into the snow, and begins freezing immediately, but the wolf has already moved on to fight Aiden. Heyoka also hears that distant howl again, closer, nearby, a deeper howl than the ones these wolves make.(You don't reroll ones, and can't cast two spells a round I'm afraid. Do you want me to keep this as next round's action?)
Rendal manages to keep concentrating on the spell that has wolf 1 mesmorised.
The party see Olaf display real courage to help the wounded Polar Bear. He tumbles through to the bear, and manages to avoid the sudden Attack of Opportunity taken bu Winter Wolf 3. Placing hands on the flank of the large animal, he heals Fisher for 8 hit points.
Yngvar attacks Wolf 2 again. The creature looks exhausted and near death, much blood matting his thick white fur. Aiden also wounds the wolf he fights. In a last desperate attack, surrounded now on all sides, the pack leader once more opens its maws, and breathes its icy breath on the crowd of allies. Aiden, Yanosh, Yngvar and Olaf are all caught in the freezing cone of air. Suffer 16 damage, Reflex Save DC 16 for half. Then, hoping to escape the combat, the wolf turns tail and runs from the fight. Move to S18 -- draws AoO from Yanosh and Yngvar. -------------------------

DM Simon Thursday November 15th, 2007 12:33:16 PM Rendal's arrows again find their mark, and another one slices through the beast's shoulder. Finally, having healed others for the duration of the fight, Olaf aims an arrow at the wolf. It glides through the air as the wolf tries to flee, and pierces his neck. With a howl, the wolf cries out and as it runs, collapses to the ground, leaving a trail of snow and blood in its wake.
---------------------
Catching their breath, the party looks around. Three large wolf corpses litter the snowy ground, and splashes of crimson stain the stark white floor across the woodland trail. Two Orc bodies also lie in a crumpled heap.
-----------------------
Ooc: I've had some ooc private questions -- here are the answers so all can see. Most of the orcs were killed by the wolves before you joined the fight. One ran off to the south, badly injured. This was all included in my early combat posts. Flaming sphere is 1 round a level, but the original target for the spell was killed. Heyoka hasn't moved the sphere since then -- it is on the map as a little orange shape, so I have had no need to make any saves against it. And Winter Wolves aren't undead, they are magical beasts.
Hope this clears some things up; Fight over anyway .... well done. 1 Hero Point to Olaf for his perfectly detailed posts and efforts in keeping Fisher alive. Do you usually get awarded XP after each fight, or at the end of a module?

Real life has forced me to limit my commitments. I was hoping Yngvar could go out in a gout of blood, but it was not to be. He has the two cure light wound potions that Garrett gave him long ago. Yngvar will give those to whomever wants them before leaving to return home. Thanks for having me.
DM Simon Friday November 16th, 2007 1:25:23 PM
The party rest and heal, meeting to share spells and potions. The Orc that fled was badly wounded, and has left a clear trail to the south from the site of the battle. The track itself, along which you presume the Orcs were originally heading, moves eastwards through the deepening woodland. You hear more howls from the distance, of the ilk you heard from the maws of the White Wolves here. The Shield of Domi which you seeks is probably carried by a larger contingent of Tundra Walkers.
Snow still falls gently, and light is still strong enough to indicate that there are at least two hours until sunset.
Yanosh Friday November 16th, 2007 3:01:16 PM
"Aiden I agree about stoping the escaping Orc but it grows late and we cannot be caught outside. You know better then I about the mercy of the Vein." Yanosh speaks to Aiden. His spirit howels at leaving the Orc to live another day.
Yanosh takes the offered potions from Yngvar, "I wish you wouldnt leave. The Ice Vein is not kind to lone travelers." Seeing that he can not change Yngvar's mind, Yanosh watches as the short human leaves them.
Yanosh then turns to the party and scans them thinking a nights rest will be more then helpful.

Olaf heals members of the party: Olaf [8 hp], Aiden [9 hp], Yanosh [5 hp], and Fisher [5 hp] while discussions continue as to the next step.
Saying goodbye to Yngvar, who so fiercely attacked the vicious wolves, Olaf keeps it simple. "Well, I haven't been knowin' you long, but we'll miss you sure. Right brave, travellin' the Vein by yerself." He spits for good luck, and wishes him well.
He then pipes in: "I'm thinkin' we better be after the orcs before nightfall. It didn't work so well last time, us lettin' the storm get in the way. Just sayin'."

Aiden's face seemed to set firmly in a scowl. "No...we shall find a defensible position. With the snow, we could lose our bows or spells from afar. The ork shall be either hunted by the demon wolves, or they will reinforce him. Either way, we enter a trap, or a battle with depleted arms and spells."
Shaking his head, "against a lone ork, that chance I would take, but not against more of the demon wolves."
"Let us find a defensible position, and let us see if anything can come of the demon wolf corpses that can aid us.."
Survival (find defensible position): 19 craft (skinning the wolves and seeing if they could use whatever available (meat for food/etc) of the corpses: 17 + 5 (I think that is the rank + bonus...not at home but visiting wife's family) = 22
DM Simon Monday November 19th, 2007 12:19:29 PM
With Olaf's words and Aiden's judgement, the party look for somewhere to rest. The mid afternoon light is still good when Aiden finds a suitable resting place; a copse of trees standing relatively close together, hidden from the trail partially by a large and compact snowdrift. The foliage is dense enough that the site is hidden from most angles. The party set camp. Snow begins to fall more heavily as the light wanes, a stronger breeze piling it at the base of the trees and adding to the drift. the air is bitterly cold, breath freezing as it escapes from chilled mouths. The sky is clear, which tells of a deeply cold night ahead.
Watch order please

Tired from the frenetic combat and still bitterly cold from the Winter Wolves' frigid breath, Olaf gratefully sinks into his sleeping roll. Others can hear him muttering about "bad luck" though he seems to be more cursing himself than any others.
DM Simon d3=2 d20+1=14 Tuesday November 20th, 2007 1:44:16 PM
The party settles in for the night. Snow falls on their camp in increasingly heavy drifts, the biting cold made seemingly worse by the eerie wind that howls through the trees. Despite the wind, the night is silent, save for an occasional distant bark that reminds the tired party of their earlier foes.
When the night is at its deepest, the sky at is darkest, Heyoka and Yanosh sit on their watch while others sleep. The cold bites at their toes and their faces, a sharp pain that prevents the drowsy pair from sleeping on duty.
A listen check of 14 from the sentries allows you to hear the crunch of snow somewhere in the darkness, through the trees. A footstep? The wind once again howls with a gust around the camp.
Yanosh Tuesday November 20th, 2007 3:51:07 PM
Yanosh accepts the healing from Rendal but takes the potion as well. Rendal does not realize just how close Yanosh had come to not surviving the fight. At least this time he did not fall before the beasts. "Thank you Rendal," is all he says to him. the only clue that Yanosh is still not well is the frosty look that remains around his eyes and in his goatee and mustache.
(OoC I had Rolled a 19 for yanosh's listen check during his watch does that stand or do you want a new one. Your call I'll reroll if needed. If keeping the 19 please keep the following watch post.)
On watch Yanosh shivers in the cold but his eyes and ears are still alert for danger. At the sound of the crunching snow Yanosh's grip on his axe, which is kept in his lap on watch, tightens as he awaits to see what is out there. Foe it must be for no friend would walk the Ice Vein at night. Nothing could survice the cold.
THE COLD!!! His mind screams at him. Only the Beroven Doden would walk the Vein at night. Silently Yanosh preys to Gargul to Protect him from the undead.(Casts Hide from Undead.) Once his spell is cast Yanosh rises from his position and moves to see if he can find the source of the crunch.

Aiden Tuesday November 20th, 2007 6:37:35 PM
Falling into his deep sleep, the occasional snort and snore from the young tracker fills the air during the first watch, and into the second. His dreams fall back onto that of the village of Twin Tusks, and the betrayal of his ...'brother'...Then the time flashes to the present, and switching from his various friends to these new strangers. Even through these new circumstances where he leads, trust within these new comrades was building, especially within Rendal and Yanosh. Even Olaf and Heyoka have proved themselves within the battle, and offered themselves to this quest which didn't affect ANY of them, other than by helping Garrett, a native of the village that none of them actually visited with the exception of Yanosh.
They had placed their faith into him, and even though their numbers were once again changed, he continued to lead. It was not going to be an easy sleep...his twitching occasionally bumping into his fellow tentmate and pack sister.
OOC: not much else I can do since he's asleep. I'll try to get to a computer during the next two days, but I'm visiting family in anticipation of Thanksgiving.

On watch, Yanosh fears the noise is that of the undead. He casts a spell to hide from such foes, and moves closer to the source of the noise. Heyoka pays no heed to the disturbance, allowing Yanosh to investigate. Instead, she further heals her companion.
In a restless slumber, the party leader is troubled by worrying dreams and fitful memory. Olaf has a much more restful sleep, seemingly untroubled by the bitter cold.
Peering through the darkness, Yanosh sees a hunched figure, humanoid, seemingly covered in fur, hiding poorly behind the sheltering trunk of a snowy fir tree. Even the falling snow does not help the creature's attempts not to be seen. It does not move, apparently unaware that someone watches.

"Come.." he says to his packsister, "we were due..." Aiden added grousingly.
(OOC: Happy Thanksgiving for those from the States...)
DM Simon Thursday November 22nd, 2007 1:24:08 PM Yanosh roars, a shout that even in sleep pervades Olaf's ears and wakes the young man. In the darkness, the axe wielded by Yanosh slashes wide of the humanoid cowering behind the tree. It shrieks, turning quickly from its poor hiding place behind a thin tree, raising hands in defence. It is not, in fact, covered in fur, but rather is shivering beneath hacked and bloody winter wolf skins. Whether in fear or with the freezing air you are unsure, but Yanosh recognises its foul face immeidately. A green skin, albeit covered in ice and tinted blue with cold, indicates that the figure is another Orc. Clearly alone, and wounded, you recognise it as the Orc that fled the fight earlier.
It jabbers desperately and loudly in Orc, hands across its face.Highlight to display spoiler: { Don't hit me! No fight Ingris! NO FIGHT INGRIS! VERY VERY COLD!}

The terrified Orc, to Yanosh' eyes weak, hurt and cold, again raises his hands, jabbering in Orc. "I have no weapons! NO WEAPONS! Very cold!" Rendal and Olaf approach with bows trained on the creature, allowing Yanosh time to sort out the situation.
Aiden studies the Orc quickly, and his gut instinct tells him that the foe is genuinely scared of the surly Dwarf shouting at him. He also seems badly hurt, through his hunched stance and blood stained hands. When the party close their eyes, Heyoka calls forth a flash of light. The Orc screams and falls backwards into a heap on the snow. It seems the spell was too much for the broken humanoid, and he rubs his eyes fiercely.

Yanosh warns the Orc of the coming interigation. The Dwarf's eyes flash as he thinks of adding 'pressure' to make the Orc talk. "Now move Orc!"
Aiden Monday November 26th, 2007 4:14:11 PM
Aiden looked at the creature, hiding his emotion of pity and disgust at the frightened being.
He waited for the creature to make its way to the fire, and then looked at the others. With a nod to Rendall and Heyoka, he motioned to the side.
His voice low so that the only two of them could hear. "we will need extra guard now...for either any other orks, or more demon wolves who may smell his blood scent." Then his eyes intense, "are there any mind magics that you have that could ease him, make him more...talkative. Heyoka Monday November 26th, 2007 8:58:49 PM
Glaring at the prone orc, unsure as to what to make of everyone babying it, she goes around to the far side of the fire from it, keeping a watchful eye on it as others tend to it's needs.
Pausing by Fisher, she rubs his head, which he happily enjoys, rubbing his head back into her palm. Making sure he's up to full health, she murmurs "Watch" to the bear.
Rendal d20=11 Monday November 26th, 2007 9:16:58 PM
Seeing Aiden nod to Heyoka and himself. Rendal moves over and quietly listens to Adien's request.

I can make him more comfortable and speak with him as a friend while you may intimidate him into speaking if I don't get their myself. In this way I will protect him from you and Yanosh.
I have seen this technique many times and it seems to work. What say you my broad friend. Heyoka if you could help me take care of his wounds without magic that would be great."
Smiling knowingly at Adien, he gets to work with the orc. Hoping the orc speaks common.
"Ah my friend come in ... Come in by the fire. Let me make some food for you. Ah I see you are hurt let me bandage you up and see if I can tend those wounds while you wait for your food. I am sure that you will be very helpful in answering my friends questions. He is just trying to save his people. I am sure you understand. You do understand don't you?" Olaf mutters to himself, then makes his way towards the group. Arriving next to Aiden, he nods at the unfolding scene, and whispers [bluff 19 vs. DC 15 to send secret message], "Aiden are we to be friends with all orcs? Or is this subterfuge a temporary one? We're sharin' a fire, is all. Wouldn't want to hurt a guest."
He then turns to look outward, keeping a temporary guard until the interrogation is over. [spot 23 (nat 20)] [listen 18]
DM Simon Tuesday November 27th, 2007 12:59:29 PM
The Orc is understandably anxious about your unexpected turn of hospitality. He gratefully moves next to the fire, his frostbitten hands almost engulfed in the fire that you provide in order to dull the cold and return any feeling. It looks quickly from one of the party to another, trying to huddle down into the rancid furs.
At Yanosh's tone, and Rendal's subsequent calm manner, the Orc seems to relax slightly, breathing more calmly, though he does keep watching Heyoka and the others who bare arms. It nods at Rendal, replying in broken common. "I understand, yes. Warm fire is good. The Demons killed my kin, then you come. Ingris run away, get lost, find demon bodies again. Use knife to tear fur." Its speech is mumbled and hasty, making it difficult to understand.
Yanosh Tuesday November 27th, 2007 3:20:51 PM
"Ingris We look for and object that was taken from our people. It was taken by those called the Tundra Walkers. Do you know of such an object?" Yanosh questions calmly in orc. Yanosh taps his axe against his leg idlely to draw the orcs attention that he is still well armed.
Aiden d20=19 d20=9 Tuesday November 27th, 2007 9:03:13 PM
Aiden looked at Olaf, his eyes definitely puzzled over the last part of his statement '...wouldn't want to hurt a guest...'
"Sometimes I do not understand whether you are serious or in jest..." he responded quietly to Olaf. "I am a tracker who grew up in an ork controlled village where humans were slaves or fought by their side. If you didn't try to hurt someone, even a guest, you were considered weak, and vulnerable..."
He then shrugs, "we shall see what this ork tells us. If he is useful, he lives, if not, he dies...it is the way of things, especially since our resources are even less as our numbers lower."
(OOC: again, whispering all of this to Olaf)
"I shall keep to the guard, since all seem to be focusing on the ork. I would rather smell demon wolf breath for at least a few more weeks..."
And so Aiden will move to stand guard with his packsister...

"Yes my friend do tell us about the shield we are looking for. I see you are hungry and this dinner looks rather good. If my college here is satisfied with your information I am sure we can give you a little of this..." Lifts up spoon and lets the wonderful vapor blow toward the Orc." See it smells good. I am sure you would rather my friendly manor than what my friend here might have in mind with that " Pointing to the axe that Yanosh has at his hip. "You really wouldn't want him to show you how he sharpens that axe each night. It still disturbs me. Please tell us what you know so that We may eat and sleep comfortably this wonderful evening. Oh by the way do you like your meat cooked all the way through or have a lot of juice?"

Heyoka Wednesday November 28th, 2007 7:48:51 AM
Smelling the cooking smells, Heyoka turns slightly green, and swallows another Goodberry. However, Fisher coms over to Rendal, an nudges him (read: Knocks him over) trying to get a better smell of the meat.
Olaf Wednesday November 28th, 2007 10:31:00 AM
Seemingly satisfied with Aiden's response, Olaf nods and whispers back, "Thanks to you, Aiden. That's a clear thing, what you said. I'm just thinkin' that hurting someone who shares your fire's a sure way to bad luck. Don't worry 'bout my omens, though---no one else does, neither." He says this last bit with a self deprecating smile, then turns to listen to Rendal's diplomacy.
He lets out a hearty guffaw when Fisher "nudges" Rendal. That's a funny sight: a tame polar bear and a slight bard in that mixup, he thinks.
DM Simon Wednesday November 28th, 2007 12:45:01 PM
The orc almost drools at the sight of food, which must have been keeping warm while the party slept soundly :) His eyes positively bulge in terror as the polar bear ambles over and almost knocks Rendal to the ground, smelling the odour that wafts through the camp.
To the firm questioning of Yanosh, and the diplomatic tone of Rendal, the Orc hesitate sonly slightly before splutering an answer, spital from his frantic voice showering the food. "An object? You m...mean the Shield? Yes I know it. It is v...very powerful! The walkers need it for .... for Ragnhild."
He stops suddenly, looking around the silent and dark forest as if expecting to find a horrid creature staring back. Then, at a guttural whisper; "Ragnhild is powerful too. If you look at Shield of Domi you die! Very powerful it is. Ragnhild wants it. She asks Ingris and the Walkers to get it. Boss say yes, so we get it. Boss powerful too." The frightened Orc seems more than taken with the word powerful, evidently proud of his accurate use of such a complex piece of vocabulary. "Boss taking Shield to Ragnhild now. You never catch boss. He too fast!" Thinking he may have overstepped a mark of some description, Ingris falls silent again, staring with open desire at the spit-covered, and now cold, food.
Yanosh Wednesday November 28th, 2007 2:47:07 PM
Dropping his shield and grabbing the Orc by the scraggly hair on its head Yanosh yanks its heaback. Placing his Axe Edge against the Orcs forhead Yanosh growls in orcish, "Now tell me where this Ragnhild can be found. Tell me or you will see true POWER. For you are looking at the ones who killed the Winter Wolves." Yanosh slightly drags the edge over the orcs skin opening a slight cut.
Heyoka d20=17 Wednesday November 28th, 2007 4:08:36 PM
Eyeing Yanosh curiously, she asks, in common, "Ragnhild? Do I know that name?"

Aiden d20=13 d20=9 Wednesday November 28th, 2007 10:56:56 PM
Aiden kept quiet as his attention was around the wylds. The crisp air stirred his blood even as the steam came from his mouth and nose. Looking down at his packsister, he smiled. This was what he was comfortable with...not with giving orders or determining where these strangers, who have entrusted themselves into his leadership, should go.
However, now that he was starting to get comfortable with them, the leading thing isn't as bad as what he had originally felt.
He could only chuckle at the various murmurs, and possible yelpings of the ork. Orks know violence and power...and this group seemed quite comfortable showing theirs.
Aiden moved to his next spot in camp, watching (and listening) vigilantly to make sure nothing was sneaking up on them.

Olaf d20+4=10 Thursday November 29th, 2007 10:31:55 AM
Hearing the Orc start to get...wordy...Olaf tries to butt in to the conversation. Speaking in Orcish, he says to Ingris, "I bet you we can outrun the Boss. Why do you think Boss is fast? And why can't we be faster? We have the very powers of the Vein on our side." He finishes with a command: "Tell it. All of it." [aid another Diplomacy 10 vs DC 10 gives +2 to Rendal's result]
DM Simon Thursday November 29th, 2007 12:24:21 PM
The Orc's verbal waffle becomes sudden silence, his dialogue abruptly ending as Yanosh threatens the creature, scoring a line down his neck with his axe. A drop of blood falls to the ground. Olaf's comparatively mild threats help to terrorise the Orc still further.
With the gentle encouragement of the axe and the shouts, the Orc continues. "What i m...mean, is b....b...boss has a h...head start. That's all! Boss is strong, but he just taking s...shield to Ragnhild! Ragnhild wants the Shield. Pays Boss well. Boss has many Walkers.... many walkers yes. That is all In...Ingris knows." He stays perfectly still, wary of the blade at his neck.
The party have not heard the name of Ragnhild before. Aiden can clearly hear the conversation through the crisp and empty air. He sees or hears nothing else, but is aware that the light from their fire can be seen for a long distance.
Yanosh Thursday November 29th, 2007 2:53:18 PM
Yanosh stares into the Orks eyes. Judging the Orcs word Yanosh releases it hair and and moves the axe from the orc. In orc Yanosh asks "Where do the Walkers go? What direction? And who is Ragnhild?"
Rendal d20=10 Thursday November 29th, 2007 9:43:54 PM

[OOC: It's good to be back! And thanks again to Simon, who did such a good job.]
You search your memories for the name "Ragnhild," but don't come up with anything conclusive. It is not an uncommon woman's name. Aiden remembers a skilled weaver of the Twin Tusks with that name, but doesn't think it's the same person. Similarly, Heyoka is pretty sure one of her ancestors bore the name, but she doesn't remember for sure. Anyway, the woman would be long dead by now.
Yanosh and Rendal both have questions for the orc. "Walkers go east to Ragnhild," he replies. He smiles; the effect is not pleasant. "Ragnhild has powerful magics. Much too powerful for you. She'll turn you into rabbits, eh?"
He frowns at Rendal. "No, stupid!" he sneers. "Ragnhild is not Boss. Ragnhild is woman! Boss is man!" He guffaws. "Maybe you not know difference?"
"You never catch Boss," he finishes.
Yanosh Monday December 3rd, 2007 2:43:10 PM
"Ragnhild is magic woman? Ugly magic woman?" Yanosh growls in Orc. Looking at Rendal "Watch the Prisoner. If he trys anything kill it." With that Yanosh walks over to Aiden.

Aiden, his senses quite keen in the evening frost/twilight, turns even as Yanosh makes his way to his current guard position.

Rubbing his chin, "it would make sense for her to take what we seek until we find the sword..."

(OOC: I believe it was a sword that she had asked/bribed the others (*grumbles as he is now the only one left from that group...and he DIDN'T want (nor did he receive) any of the treasure that was used to bribe the group to retrieve that bloody object* *grumbles some more as there is no other pc from that group that he could yell 'I told you' at....*)

"Not ugly," the prisoner replies. "No--beautiful. Young and beautiful. And she hardly wears clothes--just little skimpy things. I have seen her."

Yanosh and Aiden both have the same thought: could this Ragnhild person be the Ice Witch the group has encountered before?

Olaf grunts at the Orc's description. "Aiden, this sounds like the way a favored of the Vein might behave. I'm thinkin' this is someone with the Powers on their side." He finishes: "Don't know much about the shield or the sword, but I'll help as I can."

Rendal's checks flush in frustration as he was about to give the Orc some a bowl of warm soup.
He grabs the Orc by the colar and shakes him "You dare lie to me when I bring you this hospitality. PERHAPSE WE SHOULD JUST LEAVE YOU OUTSIDE TO DIE. You better tell us something that will impress us NOW or you will be outside."
Heyoka Tuesday December 4th, 2007 10:32:45 AM
Looking at the Yanosh and iden in conference, she doesn't strain her ears to hear what they are saying. She doesn't need to. Sliding her eyes back to the Orc, she suddenly grins, almost ferally, and gets up and stalks towards him.
Expecting him to no understand Elvish, she talks straight into his face, in Elvish.
"Do you think this Ragnhild is more powerful than me? Do you think that she will be more merciful than me? I tell you this, she will not. And I will have all the animals pull you apart like the separate joints of meat you are, and have the insects and rodents, who clean up messes like you, come out and clean up the mess they make, while you are still alive. You will wish that you had given us all of Ragnhild's and you Boss's information, including where they were last together, and who their parents were!"
He voice start out low, then slowly keeps rising until she seems to be screaming shrilly at the smelly thing in front of her. Stalking way, she puts a hand on Fisher's shoulder, and guides him around to behind the Orc.
Whispering in the bear's ear, she sets him to scent the Orc, and to Intimidate it, guarding and antagonizing it at the same time.
DM Kathy d20-2=2 d20+10=17 Wednesday December 5th, 2007 12:26:28 AM Olaf isn't sure about this Ragnhild person, but pledges to aid his companions in recovering the Shield. Or is it a sword?
Rendal searches through his mental catalog, but doesn't turn up much of anything. He does know, however, that the orc is not telling the truth about something. He threatens the prisoner.
"Not lying!" he protests. "We been to Ragnhild's many times! Boss says Ragnhild promised us power and good fortune. Good things, from magic!" He scowls. "Maybe I ask her to kill you all! Turn you into mice, or, or...or bugs! Ha! You don't scare me!"
His bluff falls flat [Bluff check 2! I won't even make anyone roll a Sense Motive]. You believe he is telling the truth about the group having visited Ragnhild, but you don't believe your prisoner has set eyes on her himself. He doesn't truly believe he can command any favors from Ragnhild, although he believes his Boss may be able to. Mostly, he's trying to impress you all with how important he is.
Then Heyoka goes into her extrordinary performance. THe orc watches, looking puzzled rather than frightened. When she finishes, he turns to Rendal. "Can't you control your women any better than that?" he asks.

Then, keeping eye contact, she takes out another dipperful, and eats that herself (fishing out the meat-stuff for Fisher. She prefers fish.)
Yanosh d20+9=18 d10+3=10 Wednesday December 5th, 2007 3:34:22 PM

Aiden d20=9 d20=20 Wednesday December 5th, 2007 6:40:44 PM
Watching what was happening with a raised eyebrow, Aiden couldn't say or react much. Rendall and Yanosh had things in hand.
If the ork died...so be it.
A wry grin appearing on his face, Aiden slyly said to the ork (ooc: if he is still alive/conscious after Yanosh is set with him), "The ice witch is a female...does your chieftain rule her?" (ooc: said it in ork...)
Whatever the response, it did not matter, he was turning to check the area of his patrol around camp.

DM Kathy Thursday December 6th, 2007 12:07:17 AM
As the interrogation continues, Olaf contents himself with the occasional suggestion, keeping an eye on the surroundings. He neither sees nor hears anything out of the ordinary, though.
Rendal attempts to use the stew to persuade the orc to be more talkative. Heyoka aids this by openly feeding her bear and eating some herself.
Not to be outdone, Yanosh attempts a bit of Dwarven diplomacy. Since he intends to miss the orc, he does, burying his axe instead in the ground right next to the prisoner.
Beads of sweat now cover the orc's sloping forehead. "But I tell you!" he protests. "I tell you all! Boss takes Shield to Ragnhild. Ragnhild has great magic, much power. She wants Shield, rewards us for Shield. What else you need to know? How to catch Boss? Can you fly like birds? Then maybe you catch him. Otherwise, no. He move too fast. Where Ragnhild live? In mountains of jagged teeth. You go that way now. What more you want?"
To Aiden's taunt, the orc says "Ice witch? Ragnhild is ice witch?" A thoughtful look comes over his face.
Yanosh Thursday December 6th, 2007 2:54:18 PM
Feeling that there is no more useful information they can get from the Orc Yanosh decides its time to ride themselves of the 'prisoner'. Prying his Axe from the frozen ground Yanosh turns to the Orc. "We can not travel fast and take a prisoner with us." Yanosh looks Ingris in the eyes, "Nor can an enemy be left behind us." With that said Yanosh removes the Battle Axe from over his left shoulder and drops it next to the Orc. Only one meaning is implied. Yanosh stands War Axe in hand for the Orcs reply.
Olaf Thursday December 6th, 2007 5:45:16 PM
Olaf looks pensively on the proceedings. Part of him knows the Vein is a harsh place, and does not tolerate the weak. Part of him feels that chance should play a roll. He says to Aiden, the de facto leader, "Maybe we should let the Orc die or live with only the Powers to determine its fate. Somethin' like lettin' it go naked into the night. It's a cruel fate, but if the Powers of the no like it, they can let 'im live."
Heyoka Thursday December 6th, 2007 8:57:05 PM
Snorting in humor at this Olaf's suggestion, she eyes the orc.
"Nah, let Fisher drag him away to be eaten by the beasties around here. they ought to get something out of us being here. Heck, let's feed them."
DM Kathy Friday December 7th, 2007 12:33:19 AM
"You will not be killed this day," Ingis says in Orcish, repeating Yanosh's words from earlier in the evening. "So Dwarves are liars. So be it."
He picks up the axe that was dropped at his feet. "Perhaps I'll shed some Dwarf blood before I go."
Heyoka Friday December 7th, 2007 8:26:07 AM
After the Orcs words are repeated in Common, she looks a bit amused.
"Who said he'd be dead as the anmilas ate him?"
Rendal d20=12 d20=13 Friday December 7th, 2007 9:05:56 AM

"He has broken his tribe's trust, and has run from battle...he is as good as dead to them. He has also given us information that we suspected before. On the morning, Rendall shall cast his enchantment, and he shall be given enough rations for himself for one meal and a dagger."
He then stepped in between the dwarf and ork. His double headed axe in hand, "we shall keep to our honor..."

The orc takes up the axe, but it seems he won't need to use it. The group changes its stance--or were you only bluffing? At any rate, you begin to talk of letting the orc go.
The orc reluctantly hands the axe back to Yanosh. His eyes shift about to all of you, clearly not trusting your change of heart.
Rendal suggests bringing the prisoner along with you, so that he can help you navigate the hazards of the Jagged Jaws. But can you trust any directions he gives?

Considering the matter closed, Olaf and Yanosh lay themselves down to sleep.
Aidan remains on watch, and tries to determine how much longer it will snow. It is difficult to tell; the darkness is hiding the cloud patterns from him. Perhaps he will have a better idea in daylight.
The orc prisoner attempts to stay awake, clearly not trusting his captors. His wounds and the warm firelight, however, eventually prove more than he can resist. He slumps over and sleeps fitfully for a few hours.
Morning comes on sullenly, under a leaden sky. The birds and beasts stirring about sound sleepy and querrulous. It is a morning for lying abed.
Your quest, however, does not permit such luxuries. If the Shield is to be intercepted, you must continue your pursuit. Accordingly, you make your morning preparations and eat a hasty breakfast.
It is not snowing at the moment, but Aiden does not like the look of the clouds.
Rendal Tuesday December 11th, 2007 8:41:45 AM

Aiden d20=7 d20=5 d20=8 d20=6 Tuesday December 11th, 2007 3:13:29 PM
Frowning at the clouds in the distance, "we will face a storm..." he said as a matter of fact tone.
Looking at the ork, "the storm comes quickly...I would tell you to search for cover in a few hours..."
Then to the others, "we will need to push ourselves, but watch for cover for when the blizzard comes..."
DM Kathy Wednesday December 12th, 2007 12:06:56 AM Olaf and Yanosh prepare their spells for the day, and protect themselves from the elements.
Rendal fuels up for the day ahead, and Aiden keeps watching the sky.
When you are ready to depart, your erstwhile prisoner says, "Boss'll probably kill you. Or Ragnhald." With a last, fierce grin, he departs.
[OOC: There wasn't a firm decision on letting him go vs. bringing him along. If I've guessed wrong, let me know. :) ]
You shoulder your packs and resume your chase. The tracks are difficult to read after last night's snow, but you do know where you're headed--the Jagged Jaws themselves. You find it easier to follow the tracks when you have a rough idea of where they're headed.
The snow begins falling again around mid-morning. By noon, the flakes are falling thick and fast. And the wind seems to be picking up.
Rendal Wednesday December 12th, 2007 8:41:03 AM
Rendal talks to Yanosh and Adien.
"This spell I will be doing will last about 4 hours and should make him my best friend. If he can tell me a quicker way to get there then I think that maybe he should come along. As long as he is treated like a friend he will be extremely helpful to me. So if you can be friendly to him that would be great. If he doesn't know of a quicker way I will just ask him to seek shelter away from the other Orc's because he wouldn't want to hurt my chances of surprising our friend Ragnhald."
While making the morning meal. Rendal makes a special dish for our fellow Orc. As he gives the stew to the Orc Rendal casts.
Charm Person.
"My friend Orc. I really need your help these next few hours. How do we get to Ragnhald the fastest way possible and I could use your helping picking up camp. If you don't mind?"
Yanosh Wednesday December 12th, 2007 3:41:11 PM
Yanosh listens to Rendal's idea and agrees to let him try. yanosh helps in stopping Ingres from leaving before the morning meal.
After breaking camp Yanosh takes his place in the marching order right behind Aiden. (Who I believe will be leading the way as tracker.)
Olaf d20+10=11 Wednesday December 12th, 2007 5:14:21 PM
Olaf inquires to the group if any want protection from the elements. If so, he cast's Rose's temperature control on that person's belt-buckle, to provide convenient warmth for the next 24 hours.
He helps pack up the camp, muttering to himself about "strange clouds" and "unnatural cold" before heading off with the group. He insists on helping to take point, mostly to look for crevasses or other hazards.
[ search 11 (nat 1)]
DM Kathy d20=8 Thursday December 13th, 2007 12:30:12 AM
Rather than letting Ingres go, Rendal decides to befriend him, with a little magical help. Once his spell is complete, Ingres regards him with a warm smile. Given the orc's tusks, the effect is rather unsettling.
"Yes!" he cries. "We go to Ragnhild. She give us great magics! Hooray!" With an orcish cheer, he sets to packing up with a will.
Unfortunately, he isn't much help on the trail. Ingres was clearly a follower, not a leader or even a scout. Aiden proves better at finding the trail, although Ingres's enthusiasm never wanes.
As morning moves into afternoon, the clouds continue to gather and the wind continues to rise. But the Jagged Jaws are now quite close; perhaps you can find some sort of shelter there to protect you from the worst of the weather.
Heyoka & Fisher Thursday December 13th, 2007 9:13:40 AM
Having been quietly following everyone since dawn, she eyes the Eager Orc curiously. It obviously knows it's captured, but it acts like it's on an adventure....
1 LVL- Goodberry, Endure Elements, Cure Light Wounds, Endure Elements
2 LVL- Bear's Endurance, Lesser Restoration
Aiden d20=13 d20=8 d20=3 d20=6 d20=11 Thursday December 13th, 2007 6:36:34 PM
Aiden continued to follow the trail, but attempted to be aware of any possible sites to spend the night.
Looking over towards Heyoka, "what do you think?" as he nods towards the sky. She seemed almost, if not as, familiar with the elements as he, but in a different, manner. His knowledge was based off of experience and survival, hers was that...and something more ...intimate.
As he awaited her answer, he continued to watch and listen for signs of danger...whether ork, or more...
DM Kathy Friday December 14th, 2007 1:00:44 AM Heyoka is puzzled--and perhaps a bit suspicious--of the orc's sudden eagerness. You soon see, however, that it is the result of his friendliness toward Rendal--and that the rest of the party doesn't share in his sudden regard. Ingres still regards the rest of you with wariness and suspicion. Rendal, however, is his new best friend, and he is eager to please him.
Aiden can follow the tracks of the Tundra Walkers, though with some difficulty. The sky, however, is worrisome; all signs point to a blizzard on the way. Indeed, the snow is already beginning to blow nearly horizontally, whirling up under hoods and cloaks.
Olaf d20+3=16 d20+3=5 d20+10=13 Friday December 14th, 2007 11:08:48 AM
"Aiden," Olaf shouts through the rising wind, "any sight of shelter?" He also scouts the nearby Jaws, fearing for strange monsters or more of the fearsome wolves that might impede their progress. "Maybe we should push on to the Jaws?"
Yanosh Friday December 14th, 2007 11:52:23 AM
Yanosh also worries about shelter. "Aiden we do need to take shelter. Can you find a suitable place?" Yanosh trudges through the rising snow like a plow.
CDM Jerry Friday December 14th, 2007 3:57:35 PM
Greetings Woldians!
I am excited to tell you that BIG, even HUGE changes are coming for The Wold. The Wold is evolving and everyone one of you will be affected. But I'm not going to tell you about it here. I'm just going to whet your appetite:
--A new type of game --Major changes to the website --Greater choice for both DMs and players!
I will begin introducing the new material in the LnB sometime between now and Monday. You will need to start watching that board daily to understand what is going to be happening. This process will be ongoing for a bit, so you really do need to view the Loot 'n Booty board daily starting now.
I'm mass emailing this and also posting it on every game board so everyone sees it.
Enjoy your weekend!
Jerry

As the storm worsens, you begin looking for shelter.
Your search is interrupted, however. Two arrows come flying through the whirling snow, aimed at Aiden. Neither shot is good enough to penetrate his armor.
Two more arrows come flying at your captive. Ingres, of course, no longer wears his armor, so both arrows strike him. He gasps and drops to the snow, unmoving.
Looking around, you can tell that the flying snow is going to make it difficult to see your opponents, let along return their fire.
[OOC: We are now in combat, so please post AC and hitpoints with each post. Also, try to post every day.
Because of weather conditions, apply a -4 penalty to Spot checks, Listen checks, and ranged weapon attacks. Please state in your post that you have applied this penalty, or I will apply it to your result.
Your attackers are about 40 feet ahead of you. You need to make a DC 0 Spot check in order to see them.
I will do a map if/when you close the distance a little. :) ]

Olaf peers into the snow [spot 16(-4 for weather) = 12] and sees several attackers ahead, in an apparent ambush. Uncertain of the odds, he decides to hedge, intoning to the Powers of the Vein for their blessing (casts Toro's Taur Try (Lionotaur)). He then pulls out his sickle as he attempts to hide by kneeling in the snow, slowly moving forward 15 feet. [hide 25, move silently 25]
Rendal d20=9 d20=8 d20=10 Monday December 17th, 2007 8:13:12 AM
The snow gets into Rendal's eyes not letting him see much of anything in front of him.
Spot 9-4= 5 Seeing black shapes flying by out of the corner of his eyes he sees his new "friend" fall. Not knowing much about healing itself he is not sure what he can do but he will try. Hiding from the enemy by following olaf's wisdom Rendal kneels and hides over the orc.
Hide 8+7= 15 (do to weight probley has mace back) Healing check on orc to stabilies 10 no go.
Knowing he is not of much help if he can't see the enemy he waits for the actions of his comraeds.

Yanosh--AC20--HP50/50 d20-2=9 2d8(6+2)+2=10 Monday December 17th, 2007 4:01:07 PM
When the arrows strike Aiden, Yanosh has his War Axe in his hand in a flash. Raising his shield into a guard position Yanosh looks in the direction from which the attack came. Peering into the storm Yanosh can barely see the attackers.
Realizing that the nights rest did not fully heal him Yanosh shoulders his axe and pulls a potion from his pack. Quickly he downs the potion of cure moderat wounds. Yanosh feels the healing powers of the potion course through him. The aches and pains of the privious Battle forgotten. He feels the Itching of the wounds knitting and knows he is fully ready for combat again.
Spot 9(-4 Taken during roll) cure moderat wounds 10(fully healed)
Aiden (AC 19 HP 46) d20=15 d20=9 Monday December 17th, 2007 4:14:31 PM
Aiden knew that he had to be at the forefront. To do less would be to put the group at a disadvantage.
And so, (ooc: if the 21 vs ork is enough) if he sees the creatures, he moves towards them with his packsister by his side. (move 25'). Hopefully packsister would slink and use her low build and the flying snow to move stealthily by his side...that would be his surprise when he finally did reach the creatures.
Of course, Aiden would also be wary...it would be easy for the orks to spray them with arrows and have their prey run straight into a pitfall (especially since the snow was flying about).
Spot: 23 (25 if ork)...with the -4 applied, it'll be 19 (21)
DM Kathy d20+1=9 d20+1=7 d20+1=19 d20+1=11 d20+1=7 d20=18 d20=17 d20=1 Tuesday December 18th, 2007 2:22:17 AM Olaf looks ahead and sees the attackers--four indistinct shapes looming in the swirling white. He casts a spell and moves cautiously forward.
Rendal, too, attempts to hide. He approaches Ingres to see what can be done for the orc, but his healing skills aren't quite up to the task.
Yanosh drinks a potion to bring himself back to fighting form, and readies his weapon and shield.
Aidan and his packsister move forward, also doing their best to hide in the natural terrain. Aiden can see the attackers clearly; they are indeed orcs.
One of them seems to see Aiden despite his stealthy approach, and fires another arrow at him. It is a poor shot that gets nowhere near him.
Two arrows come flying at Yanosh. They hit him, but are turned aside by his armor.
The last arrow is aimed at....well, you can't really tell who. It falls to the ground well short of all of you [nat 1!].
The orc who fired at Aiden shifts his bow to his off hand and draws his longsword.
Rendal d20=11 d20=1 Tuesday December 18th, 2007 1:05:42 PM
Wiping the soft slushy snow out of his eyes and reading himself for the attack that is to come. Rendal peers through the glaring white of the snow to where the attackers lay.
Spot 11-4=7
The glare of the snow must still be effecting my vision. Hmm.. Mabey if I light the area up from the ground.
Trying to see if there is any hope for the orc below him Rendal trys again. Healing check 1.
Hmm he is as good as gone in this cold or the snow is in the way. Man I am cold.
Yanosh Tuesday December 18th, 2007 3:48:46 PM
Yanosh stays with in 10 feet of aiden and moves towards the orcs. Yanosh drws his War Axe again and readis to join in combat.
Olaf (AC 20--HP 29/29) Taur Try 1/100 d20+6=14 d6+1=5 d6=5 Tuesday December 18th, 2007 7:40:49 PM

Heyoka d20=17 d20=13 d20=13 d20=8 d20=12 d20=2 Tuesday December 18th, 2007 11:38:19 PM

DM Kathy d20+1=8 d20+1=19 d20+1=5 d20+1=6 d20+1=8 d20+1=20 d8+1=6 Wednesday December 19th, 2007 12:56:39 AM Rendal peers ahead through the snow, and can make out four indistinct forms amid the white [the Spot DC was 0, so 7 makes it easily]. He is still unable to tell whether Ingres is even alive, let alone in need of assistance.
Yanosh moves up next to Aiden, drawing his axe. Olaf sticks to his hiding place.
Heyoka moves up and casts Bear's Endurance on Yanosh. [Yanosh gets a temporary +4 bonus to his Constitution, with corresponding bumps to hit points and Fortitude saves.]
The sword-wielding orc, meanwhile, appears to re-think his strategy. He puts his weapon away and falls back.
The other orcs let fly with arrows. One sees Aiden and sends an arrow in his direction, but misses badly. The other two send arrows at Yanosh. One flies wide, but one finds the mark, biting deep for 6 point of damage.
Their arrows loosed, the orcs fall back a bit.
Aiden Wednesday December 19th, 2007 1:51:02 AM
Again, Aiden pushes forward to try and engage the orks. (ooc: how far are they?)
Aiden Wednesday December 19th, 2007 1:53:54 AM
(OOC: ack...didn't finish)...
Again, Aiden pushes forward to try and engage the orks. It was difficult since he could not see them very well, but there was little else he could do (since charging them through a snow storm was not amongst the wisest of choices...and he was not going to sacrifice Packsister to slow them down).
"I wonder if they are trying to pull us..." he grumbled, perhaps loud enough for Yanosh to hear.
(OOC: map please, or at least, how far are we from them?)
Rendal d20=3 Wednesday December 19th, 2007 9:39:29 AM
Seeing the four forms Rendal reaches for his bow and arrow that are always at hand and takes aim. Merging the tip of the arrow with one of the forms that are a little ways from us.
Attack 3+8-4= 7
Occ: I don't know if my feats Point Blank and Precise Shot help in this situation.
Heyoka Wednesday December 19th, 2007 12:28:34 PM
Scanning the environment, she looks for the largest clump of Orcs in the misty environs.
(Plan- Flaming Sphere)
Yanosh--AC20--HP56/56 (Temp Con 23 +6hp) Wednesday December 19th, 2007 4:33:04 PM
Felling the surge of power from the spell Heyoka cast on him Yanosh knows this will be a 'fun' fight.
"Could be baiting us in." Yanosh answers the ranger, "Feel like taking the hook Wunjo?"
Yanosh starts to hum a familar tune and starts beating his War Axe on his shild in time to it.
DM Kathy d20=10 d20=18 d20=13 d20=4 Thursday December 20th, 2007 12:59:21 AM Aiden pushes forward, getting within 40 feet of the orcs. To go much farther would leave the rest of his companions behind.
Rendal fires a shot that goes astray. [You are too far away for point-blank shot to be in effect. You can move up if you like.]
Heyoka scans the orcs, looking to catch them in a clump. They are close enough to support one another, but not bunched. [You can cast a flaming sphere this round if you like; just tell me where to put it on the map.]
Yanosh, like Aiden, is beginning to wonder if the orcs aren't drawing them in on purpose. Nevertheless, his warrior's blood is stirred, and he begins beating a rhythm on his shield.
The orcs, meanwhile, fire again. One arrow skips off Aiden's armor; none of the others come close to their marks. The orcs retreat a little.
[OOC: A map is on the way; let me know if you don't get it. Also, as a reminder, please include your AC and hit points each time you post, until combat is over. Thanks. :) ]

Yanosh--AC20--HP56/56 (Temp Con 23 +6hp) Thursday December 20th, 2007 3:48:14 PM
Yanosh keeps pace with Aiden and closes in on the Orcs. "Over ravines and through the snow to pound on Orcs we go. Aiden knows the way To battle today and bloody all the snow." Yanosh sings as he closes in.
Aiden Thursday December 20th, 2007 8:08:13 PM
Aiden grumbles slightly to himself as he knows that the others were falling behind. To take on two (at least) by oneself may be brave...but foolhardy.
But that is what he does...
He continues to move to U9...It is his hope that Packsister would soon split from him afterwards to go around the other side of the tree to face the orks. (aka he would go against 1 and packsister against 2...if they stay still...doubtful, but if they do)...
His axe still in his hands...ready to split some ork heads...
Aiden (AC 19 HP 46) d20=10 d20=15 d20=19 Thursday December 20th, 2007 8:10:50 PM

Olaf creeps forward, doing his best to stay hidden.
Aiden and Yanosh close on the orcs. Packsister keeps up with Aiden, and seems willing to assist him. Yanosh begins singing in time to the rhythm he is pounding on his shield.
Rendal takes up Yanosh's tune with a little more skill, and the party is bolstered by his singing. He moves a little closer.
Two of the orcs (#1 and #4) fire at Yanosh before retreating a little further. Both shots ping! off his armor.
The other two (#2 and #3) move away from the Flaming Sphere and fire at Aiden. One shot goes way wide, but the other hits for 6 points of damage.
Yanosh--AC20--HP56/56 (Temp Con 23 +6hp) Friday December 21st, 2007 3:30:22 PM
(OoC Yanosh should be with in 10 feet to Aidens side. Or did i not say he was staying close to Aiden. If I didnt then I am sorry I will play it from here.)
Yanosh sees that Aidens longer legs are carrying him through the snow faster. Yanosh moves quickly to Aidens side so the ranger will not face the orcs alone. Calling out in orc Yanosh taunts them "Hey Orc who wants to die first this day?"

Aiden sweeps with his double bladed axe, striking with a mighty blow (hopefully).

Rendal moves up and shoots at one of the orcs. His arrow finds its mark, and draws blood.

Olaf moves forward some more, still staying hidden.
Aiden and Packsister move to flank the orc that Yanosh attacked, their eyes on Orc #3.
Heyoka begins rolling the Flaming Sphere, intending to put it behind the orc that Yanosh attacked. Then Aiden moves up and stands in that very square! Instead, Heyoka rolls the Sphere into AA-8, the square occupied by the orc. The orc yelps and tries to get out of the way, but to no avail [Reflex save 13, which I assume fails]. The orc howls as his flesh singes, then he drops, unmoving, to the snow. [7 damage] Meanwhile, Fisher begins closing in on Orc #4.
Orc #3 fires a shot at Aiden. It's a lucky shot [nat 20!] and it finds its mark for 8 points of damage. The orc then retreats a ways. Orc #4, somewhat encouraged, fires at the same target. His shot misses, and he, too retreats.

Noticing Aiden dropping, looks for where the arrowe came from... Seeing #3, she aims it to be right on top of him!
Fisher does the quiet thing, sneaking up on his intended prey (#4,in 17AC) before doing a double slash.
Rendal Thursday December 27th, 2007 7:42:36 PM
OOc: I think I am ahead this round. So last post goes here.
Merry Christmas all.
Aiden (AC 19 HP 32/46) Packsister (AC 14 HP 24) Friday December 28th, 2007 8:20:00 AM
Aiden blinks twice as not only the heat, but the surprise of the suddenly ablaze ork strikes him. Many ork shaman would have wanted such a spell that Heyoka had woven, and now had made the former Tusker, a blazing (and rather smelly husker).
It was the arrow in the shoulder that broke him from his frozen moment, and with that he moved down towards ork #3 (AC 16)...again hoping to gain the flank on the ork with the aid of Packsister.

[OOC: Since we're in combat and not everyone has had a chance to post, I'll hold off on a DM post.

Happy New Year, everyone! ]
Olaf (AC 20--HP 29/29) Taur Try 5/100 d20+6=22 d6+1=6 Friday December 28th, 2007 11:03:53 PM
Sensing the impossibility of sneaking near an orc before the powerful front line of fighters takes them down, Olaf throws stealth to the wind, drawing his bone recurved shortbow as he slides forward and to the right of the line [to Y10]. He takes a shot at the third Orcish shape in the snow [Orc 3], hitting AC 22 [-4 for bad visibility = AC 18] for 6 points of damage.
CDM Jerry: OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT Saturday December 29th, 2007 12:01:36 PM
Greetings Woldians,
I hope you've been keeping up with the changes we've been discussing on the LnB. If not, you have a novel to read amongst all the posts.
Basically, we're doing the following things:
--purging all 2nd characters from everyone except DMs...that's their reward for being a DM. --We're adding a new type game: Challenge Games. It is a 2 year campaign game. We're calling our normal games Career Games.
Anyway, because of the Challenge Games, which will begin ASAP for their first 2 year run, as well as the pruning of the 2nd characters, we'll be holding a vote starting
WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 2ND
...and ENDING on
MONDAY, JANUARY 7TH
We'll be voting on one thing only:
Do you want to play in a Challenge Game or a Career Game?
If you choose Career Game, I"ll want a second piece of information. I will need to know if you want to remain in your current game or move to another.
That's it.
Voting is NOT accepted until January 2nd and all votes will be emailed to me here at gericko@gmail.com. I will not accept votes that are made on the LnB, though you may post your vote there if you want.
If you don't vote, then the ACDMs and I will be PLACING you into a Challenge game by default as that is the "new thing" and we're kinda pushing it as a new option.
Let me repeat that and reword it:
If you don't vote you lose your right to choose your game and WILL be placed. Yeah I know that is hard, but we're moving forward and don't want to have votes trickling in weeks later.
This email is just to get your attention in case you haven't been following the information overload on the LnB.
If you have a question about all this or are now totally confused, reply to me only or post on the LnB where you'll get 100s of people telling you what is going on. :)
Or you can IM me on AIM. My handle is Gericko.
Enjoy your day and don't freak out!
CDM Jerry

Ooc Wiping sweat from my forehead. I thought I was going to have to appolagize for not post for 3 days this week. Only to see that Our Dear and Gratious DM can not post till Jan 2. Any way sorry for missing 3 days this week, rough work week with the Holiday and all.
Rendal d20=6 Sunday December 30th, 2007 10:10:14 AM
I can understand. I have been wanting to post but haven't thought of what to post since the action has paused. Any suggestions?
Maybe something like this.
Noticing that time has slowed to a crawl Rendal carfuly thinks about his next move. Maybe God is at work and has some special thing that must be done. Watching his hand move in slow motion as he pulls back the string on his bow.
Finally noticing that the arrow is almost cocked.
Few this is taking a while he thinks.
Hey maybe my arrow will hit better with all this extra time. (lets see hitting rolling button now. 6+1+8= 15 Hmm nope :) )

DM Kathy d20+1=5 d20+1=13 d8+1=2 Wednesday January 2nd, 2008 4:29:13 PM Heyoka rolls her flaming sphere toward Orc #3. It doesn't quite get there (it's limited to 30 feet per round), but the orc is eyeing it nervously. Meanwhile, Fisher attacks #4.
[I don't know how this was done in the past, but I'd like everyone to roll any attacks or checks for their familiars, companions, mounts, etc. So Shelia, if you want Fisher to attack, please roll "to hit" and damage for him.]
Aiden and Packsister move into position.
Olaf abandons his stealth tactics and fires at #3. His arrow hits the orc, who yelps in pain. Rendal hits the same orc, which is now looking very wounded.
The wounded orc (#3) takes a 5-foot step so that Aiden and Packsister no longer flank him. He fires another shot at Aiden, but misses badly.
Orc #4 now has a massive bear looming in his face. He takes a startled step backward and fires at Fisher. [Hit AC 13 for 2 damage]
Aiden d20=9 d20=9 d8=5 d8=2 d20=9 d6=6 Wednesday January 2nd, 2008 5:15:39 PM
Aiden moves towards the ork as he steps out of the flanking maneuver. Swinging his double bladed axe, he sought to bring the ork low (or at least lower by a head).
to hit #1: 9 + 9 = 18 to hit #2: 9 + 9 = 18 damage: 5 + 5 = 10 damage #2: 2 + 3 = 5
Should he fall, Packsister will turn and be ready to pounce (hamstring) on the ork that is facing Fisher. If the ork that Aiden is facing (#3) does not die, then Packsister seeks to help her 2 legged blond packmember (Aiden).

Olaf moves forward 15' more, getting near the fray and in position to skewer the vicious orcs who ambushed them with an arrow. He fires at the orc (#4) who just stepped back from Fisher [ooc: I think this means the orc is no longer in melee, so no penalties beyond -4 for weather], hitting AC 21 [25 - 4 for weather], for 5 points of damage.

Frustrated that the Flaming Sphere doesn't last longer, she watches at it flitters out of life. Finally, deciding that she's had enough, she takes out her quarterstaff, and runs forward, where her sphere last was.
Fisher, feeling the bit of the weapon, even though it does no damage (AC=14, thank goodness!)does a good imitation of a Raging Barbarian, and attacks him with everything he's got.

[ooc: I somehow missed the map email. Olaf's move is to AD7, which gives him a clear shot at Orc 4. Updating attack and damage from Rendal's song, he hit AC 22, for 6 damage]
DM Kathy Friday January 4th, 2008 2:10:22 AM Aiden steps over to confront the wounded orc. His axe swings once, twice. The second blow swishes through the air, because the orc has already fallen. He lies bleeding in the snow. Packsister moves up behind the other orc, nipping at his heels, but unable to penetrate his tough leather boots.
Yanosh rushes forward, keen to get back into the fight.
Olaf gets himself into position and launches another arrow. It hits and draws blood.
Rendal fires his own arrow, which also hits.
Heyoka watches her flaming sphere sputter out, and rushes in with her quarterstaff. Her companion however, makes such heroics unnecessary. One of Fisher's claws misses, but in the end it makes no difference. The bear rends the hapless orc where he stands.
Your foes have fallen. Of course, there is still the blizzard....
Yanosh d8+1=5 Friday January 4th, 2008 3:34:00 PM
Yanosh reaches over to Aiden and touches him healing him for 5 hp. "This fight may be over. But be watchful for more sneak attacks," Yanosh states flatly. "I think it is time to settle in for the storm."
Aiden AC 19 HP 37/46 d20=19 d20=10 d20=5 d20=14 Friday January 4th, 2008 3:45:49 PM
Aiden nodded, and then, after the spell of healing had knit his arrow wound shut, he kneeled down towards the non-fried ork corpse. Looking over, slowly, the boots/footwear, and level of protection (snow on the clothes), Aiden was going to attempt to figure out how long the orks had been out in the tundra waiting for them (and if there is a hideout of theirs nearby).
(OOC: question for you...Packsister has the track command (and feat). Is there a way to get her to track backwards, towards their lair/where they started from?)

Going over to the fallen orc rendal will again try and use healing. Healing 14

Heyoka Friday January 4th, 2008 10:43:18 PM
Running over to hug Fisher both for warmth and gratitude (aww.. she's hugging her teddy-bear!)she turns to the group.
"I can do little about this blizzard, other than suggesting we look for caves. However, if anyone is harmed, or is unable to Endure this weather much longer, I can be of some assistance in that case."

Rendal Sunday January 6th, 2008 11:15:22 PM
Still working over the poor Orc Rendal know that if his healing worked it will have worked now.
Mumbling to the God's not to have this feeling of leading some being to its death.
Rendal waits and hopes for the eyes of the poor soul to open wide and suck in air.
Shuddering as he waits.
DM Kathy Monday January 7th, 2008 12:02:21 AM Yanosh provides a bit more healing, while Aiden tries to ascertain the origins of the skirmish party. They are pretty well wrapped-up, and traveling light. Not unlike your party in that regard. Your best assessment is that they are Tundra Walkers, sent to harass your group and slow your pursuit.
Olaf takes a look around, but in the storm and gathering dark, sees little.
Rendal examines your erstwhile captive, and discovers that he still clings to life. He is able to stabilize the orc, although how long he will survive in this weather is an open question.
Heyoka suggests finding shelter, and offers magical protection for anyone who needs it.
The blizzard continues to rage. Visibility is very poor, and the temperature is dropping as the day wanes.
Olaf Monday January 7th, 2008 4:58:28 AM
Stamping his feet at the cold, Olaf spits to the side for good luck. Hearing his spit crackle into ice, he ventures to Aiden, "well, if we need some extra protection, I could warm things up a little fer us all. A region ten feet on a side, and half a man's height vertically, at a very comfortable temperature---lasts for a whole day, too. I could even make a second one, if we were too cramped in the first, beggin' the pardon of your big friend Fisher, there." he finishes, gesturing towards Heyoka.

Yanosh Monday January 7th, 2008 3:45:34 PM
Moving closer to Aiden, "We need shelter now Wunjo. I believe Rendal is suffering from the cold. Too much longer and he may suffer damage from this infernal blizzard."
Yanosh does not even look at the Orc on the ground that Rendal fusses over. Yanosh does examine the dead orc. The one that is not fried that is. Yanosh looks for signs that the orc may become a Beroven Doden (an Undead). standing his War Axe rises then falls with a resounding thunk in the frozen tundra of the Vein. Seperating the head from the shoulders of the dead orc. (OoC let me know if I have to roll an attack roll for it.) Yanosh then turns to the other dead orcs and does the same to all of them.
Heyoka Monday January 7th, 2008 4:16:59 PM
Looking at Rendal, she eyes him thoroughly.
"Is this true? You decided not to tell anyone that you needed extra help with keeping warm?"
Pausing, and blushing for a moment, considering what this might be construed as, she pushes on, verbally, trying to straighten out what she means.
"I can give you aid, so that even if the weather turns bitter even beyond this, you might have a better chance of surviving."
Aiden d20=14 d20=14 d20=9 d20=2 d20=17 Monday January 7th, 2008 11:02:07 PM
"I was seeing if they had come from nearby...if so, we could have used their old shelter..." Aiden said to no one in particular, though slightly irritable.
Turning towards Olaf, "that magick is what we'll need, though let's find a hill or even a small cave to maximize it's use."
"What we'll do is take a few moments to find a better place than in this open...even if it is a small grove. You cast your enchantment. We'll take whatever hides or armor the dead ork has and when we get to close enough trees, string them up. We'll pour water on them and let them freeze beyond your spell which may help cut down on the wind as well for packsister and Fisher. We can question the living one later, but for now we will need to bind him."
Turning towards Rendal, as well as to the others, in a strong voice, "it is not a sign of weakness for you to ask aid with the cold...that creature that had killed Garrett had failed to do so, and the evil spirits took his body after he died. I would rather not lose any others for some time..."
"Questions?"
(OOC: using spot, search, know (local), know (nature), survival in order to find some sort of shelter (or even a small grove that could fit the situation, as well as see if the dead ork had anything on them that could help)
Rendal Tuesday January 8th, 2008 12:10:38 AM
"Yes I could use help with the cold." " I am keeping him alive so that we can get information from him and he still may turn to good."
Rendal Casts cure light on Orc.

Sorry forgot to roll.
DM Kathy Tuesday January 8th, 2008 1:15:37 AM Olaf offers a magical shelter from the cold, big enough for everyone (though Fisher may be a bit cramped).
Yanosh strikes the head from one of the dead orcs so that he won't come back as undead--or at least, if he does, he won't be able to see where he's going.
Heyoka offers Rendal some magical protection from the cold. The bard, however, is busy with the prisoner. His magical healing brings the orc back to consciousness, but he stammers through shivering lips that he doesn't know where shelter can be found nearby.
Resourceful Aiden, however, is soon able to locate a small hollow sheltered by a cluster of overhanging rocks. Shivering, you drag yourselves into the hollow, and wait for Olaf to work his magic.
Olaf Tuesday January 8th, 2008 4:18:07 AM
Olaf begins pacing the hollow, muttering to himself and checking the number of paces he makes about the area in a circle. Eventually he takes an arrow from his quiver, and sticks it into the ground, 5' from the least windy side of the hollow. He then concentrates on the arrow, fingering the dull metal coin about his neck nervously and glancing about to the snow-blinded sky. His ministrations appear to work, as sudden warmth floods forward from the fletching on the top of the arrow: a region 10'x10' in size, 2.5' tall, at a balmy 70 degrees, as he finishes casting Rose's Temperature Control.
He then glares a bit at the oversized Fisher, and mutters some more to himself. Taking out some rope to make a make-shift collar that will fit Fisher loosely, he attaches a feather to the rope, then focuses himself again with a small pearl he briefly reveals [uses Pearl of power to regain Rose's Temp. Cont.], he casts the spell again, this time creating a 5'x10'x5' region about the feather that should fully encompass Fisher and anyone who chooses to sleep near the bear. Within these regions, the temperature is far warmer than would ever be found within the vein---as if some power of the fey has transported their realm to the cold wasteland.
Looking suddenly tired, he turns back to Aiden and Heyoka, and says, "that's as good as the Powers will be providing for this night, near as I can tell. Let's cover up, but good."
Yanosh Tuesday January 8th, 2008 5:38:44 PM
Yanosh feels the warmth of the spell encompass him. Noticing that even his short stature is left sticking out above the warmth. Sitting down into the area created by Olaf Yanosh settles into a gloomy state. Silently he prays to Gargul for guidance.
Aiden d20=7 d20=10 d20=9 Tuesday January 8th, 2008 10:26:01 PM
"Powerful magic..." Aiden stated, his eyes narrowing slightly. He still distrusted the reliance upon enchantments, but as in war, there are situations that demand it.
"It does not cast light, and provides warmth, good for preventing us from being seen from far..."
Smiling, "rest..." he says to Olaf, "we will need you and the others to get their enchantments or prayers answered for tomorrow. I have a feelomg that things will be most difficult..."
His mood seemed to have picked up, even as he looked over towards Yanosh. "Perhaps you and Rendel may wish to speak to him..." as he nods towards the ork. "Keep his eyes bound, and facing towards the outside. I shall serve guard with Packsister..." and then looking at Heyoka, "and Fisher, if he is up to it..."

Heyoka d20=8 d20=14 d20=13 d20=13 d20=7 d20=8 Tuesday January 8th, 2008 11:47:50 PM
Wishing she could talk to Fisher directly for the umpteenth time, she casts her eyes about, then focuses on Rendal (cast-Endurance.)
After he is cared for, whether he accepts it or not, she will do a quick search, looking for either the tell-tale signs of a fire, or for a rocky enbankment, where a cave, or at least a lee-side can be found.
Heyoka(OOC) Wednesday January 9th, 2008 12:42:38 AM
Everyonde know we're in wrap-up scenarios from now on, right? They cut Ice Vein... grr....
DM Kathy Wednesday January 9th, 2008 12:53:39 AM
Quickly, you make preparations for the night.
Heyoka casts an Endure spell on Rendal, and looks about for a place to make a fire. Her preparations prove to be unnecessary, however, as Olaf's spell takes effect. No sooner does he cast it than the little hollow becomes as warm as a summer day. The snow beneath your feet melts in no time.
Of course, that makes the ground rather wet, but your gear is mostly waterproof.
You make arrangements for your prisoner, and set watches. The night passes uneventfully, and you sleep very well in the magical warmth.
The next morning is lightly overcast, but the snow has stopped falling. You prepare a quick breakfast, pack up your gear, and set out again.
Between Aiden's tracking skills and the occasional hints from the prisoner, you are able to follow the trail of the Tundra Walkers, obscured though it is by last night's snow. True, you have to backtrack a few times, but on the whole you make good progress.
Your path leads you to the very feet of the Jagged Jaws, then up a winding canyon at its base. The sun has come out by now, but the steep canyon walls sharply limit its light and warmth. The air here is chill, and feels somehow unnatural.
Before long, you see what appears to be a cave entrance, in the wall up ahead of you.
[OOC: sorry to railroad the group a little, but I want to be sure we can finish the current adventure.]
Yanosh d20+2=11 d20+1=17 d20+2=16 Wednesday January 9th, 2008 1:51:47 PM
Yanosh's spirits pick up a bit as they enter the mountains. Seeing the entrance of the cave Yanosh starts keeping an eye on the rocks around them. His blue scarf, wraped loosly around his burn scared face, hides a slight smile. As much as Yanosh loves his new home in the viliage of Ice Peaks. He is still a Dwarf and a Dwarf is always at home in the mountains.
Yanosh uses stone cunning to keep watch for traps or other un-natural things in the rocks.

Olaf d20+10=11 Wednesday January 9th, 2008 7:25:57 PM
After a night well spent, Olaf mediates, calling on the powers of the Vein to once more grant him strength.
(memorizing: 0: create water, resistence, mending, Tor's Taur Try 1: rose's temperature control, protection from evil, obscuring mist, disguise self)
As the group sets off, Olaf tries to take the role of scout, along with Aiden. The sight of the cave fills him with some alarm---others can hear him muttering about a "dark n' dank hole, not likin' the look o' that..." Nonetheless, he begins to carefully check for any trap near the entrance.

Heyoka looks arounda bit, after having rested her eyes while mediatating the last night. Hearing Fisher grumble in the way he does when he's too warm makes her smile, and reminds her to thank the little dwarf later for the warmth.
The cave they come up to seems familiar, as if it's like her home. She wonders if there is any mushrooms or fishing holes in the back of it.

Aiden seemed a bit...hesitant...as he viewed the cave. There was an unease in the tracker, the same discomfort that he had felt in several other situations similar to this.
He seemed to stare at the entranceway for a few moments, lost in thought, before finally returning his thoughts to the assembled group.
"This is where we will need your skills Yanosh..." as he had a gut feeling that the dwarf's natural inclination towards the underground would be far sharper (and obviously intuitive) than his trained skills.
"and again, your experiences, " as he nodded also towards Heyoka.
"We will need something to aid us in seeing...or at least the humans..."
(OOC: during this day, he is going to pray for Speak to Animals...or at least hope that the ability that had shown itself once long ago (accidental spell) would appear again).

Waiting on the others Rendal thinks of things he can do down in caves where the light is not so good.
Speaking to the friendly Orc "Have you been here before?"
The Ice Palace
DM Kathy Thursday January 10th, 2008 12:59:51 AM Yanosh perks up considerably at the sight of the rocky passage. His Dwarven instincts tell him that the narrow canyon and the cave entrance are both natural.
Olaf checks for traps, but finds nothing. Aiden, too, looks around, but sees nothing untoward.
Rendal asks your captive if he has been her before. "Yes!" the orc replies. "This is where Ragnhild lives! Ha! Now she'll turn you into rabbits!" When pressed, however, he admits that he hasn't actually been inside. He and most of the other warriors would wait out in the canyon while JKul, their leader, visited Ragnhild.
You enter the cave, and find yourselvs in a wide, level tunnel that leads deeper into the mountain. Yanosh can tell immediately that although the basic shape of the tunnel is natural, it has been widened and smoothed by artificial means.
It is surprisingly warm in the tunnel, though whether from magic or some sort of hot spring is unclear.
The tunnel leads in but one direction, so you begin to move straight ahead.
Yanosh d20+2=16 d20+2=3 d20+1=11 Thursday January 10th, 2008 3:47:45 PM
"The cave is natural though widened." Yanosh softly states. Turning to the others before moving onward. Yanosh whispers quietly "One must be extra quiet in a cave. Sound travels farther and stronger then you would think. Walk softly and be wary. And dont speak unless needed. Where is Bohdi and his spells now?" Yanosh refers to the message spell used at the valley the other Orcs are at.
As silently as possible Yanosh drews his War Axe and creeps deeper into the Dark cave just ahead of the light used by the Humans.
Olaf d20+8=18 d20+10=22 d20+10=26 Thursday January 10th, 2008 7:25:36 PM
Lacking Yanosh's ability to see in the dark, Olaf asks the others for some illumination: "yers got anything to see in this tunnel with? I'm thinking to go a bit ahead, but I ain't got great eyes like Yanosh." Assuming Aiden, Heyoka, or Rendal produce a reasonable means of Illumination, Olaf will skulk ahead of the group but behind Yanosh, also looking out for traps, and trying to stay hidden.
Heyoka d20=12 d20=19 d20=18 d20=13 d20=10 d20=19 Thursday January 10th, 2008 8:27:30 PM
Snorting at the noise made by the lumbering Dwarf, daring to think he can do better than a cave dweller like herself, she inches forward, using her natural talents as a Druidess, and starts scouting the cave, as a proper Elf only can. Fisher, however, keeps rear-guard, at her insistence.
Aiden d20=11 d20=18 d20=1 d20=18 Thursday January 10th, 2008 10:07:58 PM
Aiden produces a torch from his backpack, mumbling something about 'always be prepared' or somesuch thing.
Once Yanosh and Heyoka were far enough ahead, he then lit the torch. "It will be strange not being in the lead..." as his shadowed face looked up towards Olaf after finally lighting the torch.
"Someone else will need to carry this since my axe needs both to strike..."
DM Kathy Friday January 11th, 2008 12:54:01 AM
As you step into the tunnel, Yanosh offers some advice about cave exploration in general.
An immediate problem is a light source for the non-dwarves (and non-orcs) in the party. Aiden produces a torch and lights it, but is left with the problem of how to carry it. He finally hits on the solution of giving it to your orc prisoner, who can hold it in his bound hands. He doesn't look too happy to be the light source.
Heyoka and Fisher stealth forward, at home even in this underground environment. The passage is rather a tight fit for the bear, but he manages.
Olaf brings up the rear.
As you move, you look and listen about you. The cave is natural rock, glazed over with a thin sheen of ice that sparkles in the light of your torch. Despite the ice, however, it is warmer in here than it was outside. Most peculiar. And there is an odd smell, pungent and musty at the same time, that none of you can place.
You walk down the tunnel for about a minute before you come to the first intersection. There prove to be several branching tunnels, in a pattern that could well cause confusion in the unprepared.
You have trackers in your group, however, and Aiden and Fisher can unerringly follow the path the Tundra Walkers took--probably mere hours ago. After another thirty minutes or so, Yanosh can tell from subtle changes in the airflow that you are coming to a very large chamber.
Yanosh Friday January 11th, 2008 1:45:25 PM
Yanosh slows down as he nears the chamber and waits for everyone to get back together. Yanosh knows as soon as their light gets close everyone in the chamber will know they are there. His War Axe slips silently into his hand as he tightly grips his shield and waits for the others.

He waited and listened, his ears trying to pick out any extra noise that would give away their quarry.

It is sad that our fine game is comming to a close. This is our chance to go out with glory. Play hard, post regularly and have fun. Edd
DM Kathy Monday January 14th, 2008 12:00:10 AM
The torch passes from your prisoner to Rendal, and you all concentrate on moving as quietly as you can. But, as Yanosh realizes, your light will give you away regardless of how quietly you move.
Moving cautiously, you creep forward and enter the large chamber. An incredible sight meets your eyes.
The chamber is vast, perhaps 50 feet on a side, with a ceiling that soars up beyond the reach of your torch--or your darkvision. The ceiling and walls are coated with a fine sheen of ice, which dances with blue-white sparkles of light. And there is light here, aside from your torch, but you cannot tell where it comes from or how it is sustained. Similarly, you are not sure how the air remains so warm with ice all around.
In the center of the room is a rough dais, which looks grown from the natrual rock floor. Atop the dais is a throne, sparkling with gems and precious metal. Seated in the throne is an incredibly beautiful woman. Her skin is so fair as to appear luminous, and her eyes are the color of sapphires. Her hair is silvery white, but her face is unlined, making it difficult to determine her age.
Near the foot of the dais are gathered a half-dozen orc warriors. From their gear, you recognize them as Tundra Walkers.
Blending discreetly into the background are a pair of humans, one man and one woman. Both are red-haired and beautiful, and enough alike that they could be twins. They are dressed as servants, and their eyes have a glazed expression.
The woman atop the throne smiles. "Ah. More visitors to ease my weary hours. How nice. Do come in."
Rendal d20=1 d20=6 d20=8 Monday January 14th, 2008 10:31:41 AM
Seeing the vast throne and the glazed expression in front of him Rendal is quite sure that there is some magic at work here. Taking a moment to concentrate he focuses on the servants to see if it is something he can understand what is causing them to be so expressionless.

Occ: You would think that he would know this.
Dumb founded by the splendor before him he whispers " I will confuse the enemy by song you decided how to advance. Act like you are friendly till the last moment so that I can be most effective." Will you listen to my harmony, We come to be quite charming, will you be my darling dear, let us come quite near, I will not bear, Us to be apart, my darling dear, See as I sing this harmony, You can see we are quite in harmony, with you and your team, we come to beam, our warmth and heat, be we not so neat, my darling dear, let us draw near. In friendship we trust, why not trust, my darling dear, For we are in harmony, you see bring us near."

Olaf d20+7=8 Monday January 14th, 2008 6:20:32 PM
Olaf fingers the dull metal coin about his neck, nervously. He takes a long moment to take in the features and mannerisms of the man in the back of the room.
In a brief whisper to Aiden [ bluff 8 to send a "secret message"] Olaf mentions, "If we be needin' any confusion, just let me know... Otherwise, I'll be on yer backs." He then readies an action to cast Protection from Evil on Aiden if the woman on the throne starts casting a spell.

A slight nod was his only reply towards Olaf. This was definitely a strange sight, one that he actually wasn't quite sure how to react.
Taking a step forward, "we seek the Shield of Domi..." he said in a strong voice "To return it to the village of Ice Peaks..." he continued in his thick, Twin Tusk accented voice. His eyes darted about, making sure that he would minimize the chances for any other surprises.
He was definitely wary as it was obvious that they (especially the female on the throne) were well aware of their coming.

DM Kathy d20+2=10 Tuesday January 15th, 2008 2:50:03 AM Rendal respond's to the beautiful woman's greeting by breaking into song. He attempts to weave a fascination effect into the lyrics. The female servant seems to succumb, and stares at Rendal with a rapt expression on her face.
The woman on the throne seems to have some kind of natural resistance to magic. [Ragnhild has Spell Resistance. Please make a caster level check to determine whether your song affects her.]
Heyoka is quite certain she has never been here before, nor has she heard of anyplace quite like this. The cavern itself appears--and probably is--a natural phenomenon. But the ice walls, the warmth, the light, the throne, all whisper of magic.
Yanosh prepares for battle, and Olaf prepares to defend his friends from magical attacks.
It is Aiden who responds to the woman's greeting, by stepping forward and stating the group's business there.
"Ah, yes, the Shield," the woman replies. Reaching out, she plucks a small statue from its resting place near the throne. Looking around, you now notice that other items are tastefully displayed throughout the chamber, each on its own unique stand. The woman smiles at the little statue. "An amusing little item, to be sure," she continues. "And procured at no small expense." She nods in the direction of the Tundra Walkers. "Tell me, what are you willing to give me in exchange?"
Yanosh Tuesday January 15th, 2008 12:16:02 PM
Growling softly Yanosh bites back a reply that could end it all in bloodshed. And awaits Aidens reply.
Olaf Tuesday January 15th, 2008 5:43:31 PM
Olaf grunts as he thinks about the implications of the Ragnhild's trophy collection. Something inner sense suggests that the cost of the shield in her terms might be more than they're willing to pay. "Exchange, huh," he mutters.
Switching to Orcish, trying to get a comment out of the Tundra walkers, he inquires in a slightly louder tone, "They're all trophies, ain't they? Them redheads, are they trophies, then? Ha! Are you Tundra Walkers trophies as well?" He starts to chortle at the thought.
While seeming relaxed, Olaf maintains his stance near Aiden...readying an action (again) to cast Protection from Evil on Aiden in response to any casting by Ragnhild.
Aiden Tuesday January 15th, 2008 6:04:48 PM
Aiden continued to look around, quite wary as this woman carried an incredible aura of magick and power. To rush her would be folly...and as his eyes continued to look around, an idea began to form.
"You appear to favor objects of art..." he said brusquely. Shrugging, "they seem pretty for your " as he struggled for a better word, something other than 'cave' or 'lair', "home."
A sly grin appeared, "but there are other forms of art...including those of words." His eyes twinkling further, "many of us are going to travel to lands far from here, and what greater art is there but the words and tale of you spreading through other countries and continents?"
Looking towards Rendal, and giving a small nod as a queue, "and he is very good with words and song.." shrugging, "among the best I've heard...." he added unabashedly.
(OOC: *laugh* I know I'm reaching here...but hell, we have a bard, and several of the group is going to be transplanted into other campaigns....might as well run with it, or at least try to...
What the heck...I'll throw in a hero point if possible...it's not like I can carry them out of the game...*grins*)
DM Kathy Wednesday January 16th, 2008 1:09:45 AM Yanosh remains alert, but keeps his silence for now.
Olaf attempts to taunt the Tundra Walkers. "Careful, little man," one of them replies. "If you run with the wolves, you could get hurt."
Atop her throne, the woman smiles at Aiden. "Fair words, to be sure," she says, "but I do not seek fame. Indeed, I value my privacy." She waves a hand to indicate the items in the room. "These are only the more....tangible part of my collection. I am also interested in other items of value." She smiles at her red-haired servants. "Souls, for example. A rare delicacy for a seeker of power such as I."
She gazes around at you. "So. Which of you is willing to trade me your soul for this thing you seek?"
Yanosh Wednesday January 16th, 2008 3:41:48 PM
Unable to be silent any longer Yanosh strides forward a step. "None of us will trade you for something that belongs to you not." The Dwarven Cleric glares at the Walkers, "And wolves are easily killed." And again to the woman on the throne, "This time Witch we end this. No more deals." Yanosh refers to the cave where they met the Ice Witch.
Axe and shield ready Yanosh awaits the end of their trek.
Olaf d20+8=25 Wednesday January 16th, 2008 6:47:29 PM
Olaf starts to slide sideways, looking now at the male servant. While the debate goes on, he asks, "and what o' ya, red-hair'd man? She take yer soul?" He looks into the male servant's eyes, trying to get a read of intent or even intelligence.

DM Kathy Thursday January 17th, 2008 1:26:46 AM Yanosh's answer is a fairly unequivocal "no", but if the woman atop the throne feels threatened by the axe, she does a good job of hiding it. The Tundra Walkers, however, put their own hands on their weapons and growl menacingly.
Olaf continues to study the servants. The man does not respond to his query. Looking at the pair of them, Olaf senses that there is some intelligence there, but the two seem to be under some sort of compulsion.
"Pull?" says Ragnhild in response to Aiden. "I pull nothing. I take only that which is freely given." She pauses to caress the statue. "Your people set quite a store by this little item. If you were to return it to them, their happiness would be assured. Perhaps even the differences that threaten to divide your tribe could be overcome. You yourselves would be heroes of your people. For such a treasure, who would not make a sacrifice? Tell me, what are you prepared to give?"

Shaking his head, the young blonde man begins to realize that combat draws near. Buying a little more time, he inquires of the witch, "an' if we're not givin' up our souls, then what? What'd you value? Seems yer heart is awful cold, turning down the bard like that. Well, maybe yer just looking for a little bit o' grit. What'd you say to a game o' cards, eh? We win, we take the shield an' go. We lose, an' yer take my soul, eh?"

Yanosh is still spoiling for a fight, but Olaf and Aiden still have hopes of resolving this peacefully.
Ragnhild smiles at Olaf. It's not an entirely pleasant experience. "I do not care for games of chance," she replies. "Still, you're on the right track."
She turns back to Aiden. "What will you offer?" she says again. "All your happiness, perhaps? Your first-born? Though I don't like children much. A year and a day of your memory? Come, I thought you were heroes! What heroic sacrifice are you prepared to make?"
Mulling it over, and listening to her words, Aiden realizes that, even as this creature is something out of legend, the price she asks must also be something out of myth or legend. Your courage, your love, your memory--something intangible that is nevertheless very valuable to you.

(OOC: crap! I don't think the last message went through)
Aiden started to see what was happening, and turning towards the others, he felt pride. They were willing to face death for a village that none of them hailed from, or even spent more than an evening within.
Turning back to the witch, he spoke loudly, and firmly. "They offer nothing...it was not their quest or village." Firmly, he continued, "it is MY burden and therefore MY price to pay..."
"I shall tie myself to the lands of the Vein, not being able to go to any new or strange lands, but forced to stay. I will...in short...bind myself to the land and its wishes for as long as the statue lies within the possession of those of Ice Peaks and its descendents, and the balance of nature is kept."

Yanosh and Olaf are preparing themselves for battle. Ragnhild seems uninterested in them, for the time being. The Tundra Walkers are another matter.

"But--but, Wise One!" the leader of the Tundra Walkers speaks up. "My men and I suffered much to bring that to you--"
"SILENCE!" Ragnhild roars, and her voice echoes off the glittering ice of the chamber. "You and your men will be recompensed for your trouble," she continues. She is no longer shouting, but her voice is no less intimidating. "That was our bargain, and I shall keep it. The Shield is mine, and I will do with it as I will." A tense pause. "Do you question that?"
"Er--no, Wise One," the orc replies. The Tundra Walkers retreat, muttering, to one side of the room.

Olaf has one more question for the witch, now that the deal is almost sealed. "Tell me then, Ragnhild, what about those fair humans over there. They don't seem to be in their right mind---was that the result of a bargain, or did you do that 'gainst their will?" Otherwise, he too prepares to follow Aiden.
Aiden Wednesday January 23rd, 2008 10:51:10 PM
Aiden nods, apparently his plan was going well, at least at that moment.
True, he did not want to give up exploration. But he was also leaving himself as guardian of the land, and with the condition of peace and the statue being within Ice Peaks...He could serve as protector for what he valued the most.
Looking towards Heyoka, and Yanosh, "I shall need your help in this..." for it was going to require the help of the death god, and nature gods, to fully tie himself to the land, for at least however long this sorceress who battled time, survived.
(OOC: basically trying to set himself up as a balance to her)
DM Kathy Thursday January 24th, 2008 12:59:20 AM
Ever wary, Yanosh keeps a sharp eye on the Tundra Walkers as your group retreats to the tunnels. The orcs eye him back, bold challenge in their eyes.
Aiden, too, departs the Palace, calling on his companions for their aid.
Olaf lingers to ask after the two servants. Ragnhild turns to glance at the red-haired pair. "Some bargains are better than others," she says with an unsettling smile. "If it makes you feel better, though, they entered it of their own free will. Their service is not indefinite, and they will be restored to their faculties at the end of it." She turns and settles herself on her throne. "Now, perhaps you had best go with your friends. I must pay my orcs their promised price."
You again navigate the maze of tunnels to find the entrance. It was nearing dusk when you arrived, and it is full dark now. Outside, the blizzard still howls.
Do you go out and attempt the ritual now, trusting in the Powers of the Vein to watch over you, or do you camp here until morning when (hopefully) the storm will have blown itself out?
Yanosh Thursday January 24th, 2008 10:50:24 AM
Not sure how he could help Aiden, Yanosh looks worriedly at his Wunjo. "Friend Aiden, I do not know how I can help you in this. But I will do what ever I can. I am sure with Garguls help we can achieve what it is you want." Looking out of the cave entrance into the storm Yanosh has a feeling that now may be the time to complete the task Aiden wants.
Aiden Thursday January 24th, 2008 7:14:40 PM
Nodding towards Yanosh, "aye friend Yanosh, I agree..."
He wasn't facing this new challenge or binding with dread, but with acceptance.
Once they were outside, and away from the witch, Aiden revealed his plan. "I believe that Celsiun, and Gargul would both want to prevent the witch from tampering with the balance any more...by calling upon a bind to the land, I hope to counter whatever evil she brings, and perhaps both for the balance of not only the Mountain, but the Vein as a whole."
Grinning, "it may be because I don't know the gods, but perhaps they will like to hunt in a pack against the witch who plays with souls and people for whims of her enjoyment."
"But before I do, there is one thing left for me to do ..."
And with that, he casts (for the second time ever, willingly) the spell Speak to Animals. *Packsister...I do not know how much you understand of what I am going to do, and there is little time for me to explain. For the safety of the pack and the lands, I am going to make a promise that will very much change me, and leave the two legged pack, possibly forever.*
His heart was in his words as he hated to be separated from his friends, especially his four legged companion, *and where I go, and what I do, I cannot ask of you to join me because I truly do not know what will happen.*
(OOC: Oh yeah...going to aim for the height of the storm on this one.)
Olaf Thursday January 24th, 2008 9:47:49 PM
"Well there, Aiden, friend, I'm thinkin' there's a little I can do to help ya along. You see, I'm a bit bound ta the land myself. It was a deep blizzard, when I found Celsiun guiding me, and I suppose it always was a binding between me and t' land." He pauses for a moment in recollection, then shakes his head slightly and continues. "So I'm thinkin' to make devotions to the Vein in the peak o' the storm with ya, acting as yer guide, if ya will." His uncertainty, and earnestness, is plain upon his young face.
"I know we ain't know each other long, but we'll see through this, no doubt. Get yerself ready, and we'll begin when you give the say so."
DM Kathy Friday January 25th, 2008 1:43:06 AM
You talk it over, and agree that the height of the storm is the perfect time. Before proceeding, though, Aiden wants a word with Packsister.
"You are my Pack," she replies. She speaks the language of barks, soft howls, and growls that wolves speak to one another. For now, Aiden can understand her. "And I am your Pack. The Pack will endure." She nuzzles Aiden affectionately.
Preparing yourselves, you step out into the howling blizzard. It is cold beyond belief. Visibility is zero. Even though you are accustomed to harsh conditions, being out here for too long is most unwise. Best to begin as quickly as possible...
Yanosh Friday January 25th, 2008 11:40:05 AM
Yanosh kneels in prayer to Gargul. Asking him to guide and protct Aiden. To give Aiden what he asks for and to bind him forever to the Vein. This is not in making an undead just tying the spirit of one to the land to keep another in check forever. One must keep check over the Ice Witch.
Aiden Friday January 25th, 2008 3:34:02 PM
Aiden, knowing the bite of the cold, knew that it was time.
Taking out his axe, he slammed in one head into the ground, and then gripped the other end, as he then genuflected to Baerfel, the mighty mountain of the Ice Peaks.
With head bowed low, he said in a strong voice in the language of orks, his natural (and first language)
"Mighty Baerfel...Celsiun...to you three powers I speak to. I have given my word to tie myself to the land of the Vein so that the artifact of Domi's could be returned to the peaceful people of Ice Peaks. I will serve as guardian of the land, and to balance the sorceress who had the statue stolen and plays mortals against each other. I shall serve you and tie myself as long as the statue is within the possession of Ice Peaks, and there is peace. Should war or evil outbalance what is natural, I shall serve to tip the scales, as is what should be. She abuses your powers and the shelter you provide her to play with the spirits of others.
Domi...hear and help us...your servant Garrett died to help return the statue. Aid us in returning the statue to where it belongs, and to bring vengence upon those who first abused your power.
And mighty Gargul...your servant Yanosh speaks of what we need to do. Somehow I wish to make sure that there is always a being to counter this person who plays with the spirits and desires of mortals...and being human, unless aided, I shall not live long enough to prevent her from doing such atrocities again.
And so I give of myself..."
With that, he cuts his hand to allow his blood to fall to the ground...
And he was ready...for good or ill, for what the gods were going to do. Would they ignore such a presumptuous request from a mortal who had never truly called upon them before? Or would they grant his request, albeit in a strange or unforeseen way, since he had fought for each of them in some manner or another, to maintain the balance of the witch?
(OOC: Aiden had done quests (albeit not for them but for what they represent) for each: the retrieval of the statue for Domi (and helping her cleric), the killing of the walking dead (favored enemy...helping Gargul out), and maintaining the balance (Jack Frost quest, and going after the shadow spirit that had killed the forest spirit)). *laugh*...why do I see myself being (A) given frostbite, (B) turned into a frog or (C) getting a terminal case of dead?)
DM Kathy Sunday January 27th, 2008 11:55:29 PM
In the icy teeth of the storm, Aiden calls on the Gods and Powers of the Ice Vein, seeking to bind himself to their will and to the land they serve. Nearby, Yanosh offers up his own prayers in aid of his wunjo.
Reaching the end of his plea, Aiden cuts himself, and his blood flows sluggishly in the extreme cold. Drop by drop drips off his hand, and is whirled away by the raging winds of the blizzard.
Several things begin happening at once. First, the storm ceases to rage. You look around, and find yourselves in a kind of protective bubble. Mere feet away, the blizzard continues to pound with full fury, but within the bubble all is calm and peaceful.
At the same time, Aiden's hand, the one he cut, begins to blacken and shrivel. The fingers twist in on themselves as their essence seems to drain away, and the rest of the blood pours out in a final gush. When Aiden looks down at his hand, he sees that it is twisted, blackened, withered. Useless. He has no feeling in the hand, and cannot make it do anything. The process does not hurt, but the lack of feeling is somewhat unsettling.
He has little time to dwell on it, however, for even as his feeling in his hand vanishes, he begins feeling other sensations. It takes him a moment to come to grips with it, but he realizes that he is feeling the Ice Vein. All of it. As his feet rest on the soil of the vein, he finds he can send his awareness out into the land he now serves, and know what it needs. He can't see everything all at once, but he can shift his attention and focus in on particular areas pretty much at will. He dwells for a moment with a rabbit, riding out the storm in a snug hole, then stalks with a wolf, braving the snows to ease the hunger pinching his belly.
When he turns his attention to the mountain beside him, however, he finds--a void. A space where his senses seem unable to go. He knows there are at least two humans and a group of orcs inside the mountain, but his new senses cannot find them. They are hidden--from the land, from the Powers, and now, from Aiden.

Yanosh Monday January 28th, 2008 3:47:27 PM
Yanosh continues to pray for Aidens protection from evil influances. Seeing his hand shriveling and blackening concerns the Cleric of Gargul. Praying harder Yanosh asks that he and Aiden are doing what is right for the Vein. Yanosh tightens his grip on his Axe just in case something has gone wronge and yet another Wunjo will need to be destroyed as a frozen undead.
Olaf d2=2 Monday January 28th, 2008 9:43:56 PM
Olaf stares in shock at the bitter cost Aiden has paid. Determined that it be for some good, and unaware of the feelings Aiden now has, he implores the Immortal Power.
Holding the dull metal coin about his neck, he ponders in deep thought for a moment, then flips it. "Tails" he grumbles, "I guess the straight approach it'll be."
"Celsiun!" he shouts into the suddenly silent bubble. "Guide us!"
Aiden Tuesday January 29th, 2008 12:10:37 AM
Aiden, slowly rises to his feet, his eyes wide in surprise (and shock) as they stare at his hand. Then slowly, he begins to laugh.
His eyes sparkling, "not quite what I expected...price nor prize...."
ooc: can he feel the others (aka Yanosh and packsister on it...and their general health/needs?)
DM Kathy Tuesday January 29th, 2008 2:36:54 AM Yanosh and Olaf, each in his own way, pray for their wunjo. Both feel the urge to look--really look--at Aiden's transformation.
Although his hand is blackened and shriveled, nothing about Aiden appears undead. On the contrary, his eyes are bright, his cheeks have a healthy glow, and there is a slight smile on his face. More than that, though, there is something--altered--about him, although not in a bad way. You feel a sense of strength and rightness just being near him.
Experimenting with his new senses, Aiden finds he can indeed sense the condition and needs of his wunjos and Packsister. His friends are worried about him. Packsister needs to empty her bladder. Their needs are simple, and easily cured.
Looking around, you can see the protective bubble beginning to dissolve. Snow is once more whirling about you, and the temperature drops abruptly.
Time to decide what comes next....
Yanosh Tuesday January 29th, 2008 3:44:37 PM
Seeing that Aiden looks better then what he first thought Yanosh asks,"Is the deed done Wunjo?" Placing a hand on Aidens arm Yanosh looks into his eyes as if trying to see for himself if Aiden is really there or not.Shield over his back Yanosh never released his grip on his Axe, just in case.
Aiden Tuesday January 29th, 2008 5:37:53 PM
Looking over to Yanosh, "yes..." he smiled, "it was done..."
"I may feel the land..." he replied, his voice back to the 'gruff' aspect that the ranger had carried for so long, "but I think we'll feel the cold even more..."
"Once Olaf is ready, we should return quickly to the cave and retrieve the statue."
Looking at Packsister, he leaned into her so that his voice was a whisper (and would not embarrass her), "I do not know if you understand me anymore since the spell is gone...but you can relieve yourself..."
Olaf Tuesday January 29th, 2008 10:04:24 PM
Olaf nods in assent, but keeps a slight distance from the "gift" of the land: Aiden's blackened hand. "Aye, back to the cave. I've got some particular luck to share with her."
"If we need to keep a vigil in the cold, I can help with that, too. But let's finish this."
DM Kathy Wednesday January 30th, 2008 12:58:42 AM
As the blizzard begins to rage about you once more, you retreat to the shelter of the tunnels. Packsister leaves your group momentarily, but rejoins Aiden just inside the entrance.
Once more, you make your way through the tunnels, becoming more familiar with the twisting path you need to take. Aiden's new-found senses still do not reach into the Ice Palace, though he can still fell the rest of the Vein about him.
You return to the Ice Palace to find things much as they were before. The orcs have departed, but Ragnhild lounges atop her throne, attended by the two blank-faced servants.
The minute you step into the room, Aiden feels a wash of nausea come over him as he is cut off from the Vein. No longer can he feel its creatures or its places, and the effect is like a blow. His senses reel and the room spins about him.
Ragnhild does not seem to notice. "Back so soon?" she says. "It is done, then? Or, did you change your minds?"
Heyoka Wednesday January 30th, 2008 9:43:04 AM
Having been left out in the entryway to do her meditating (i.e.-unconcious!) she slowly comes to. Without moving, she considers her surroundings, listening for what has been going on. Fisher, with his usual concern, has not left her side. Seeing her move her head even the tiniest bit, he immediately lifts his, his eyes fixed on her face.
Yanosh Wednesday January 30th, 2008 2:35:45 PM
Striding towards the witch. "It is done. Let us have the Shield of Domi so we may end this." Yanosh barks harshly at the witch. Axe and shield raised some in case of any kind of trick.
Olaf Wednesday January 30th, 2008 3:56:06 PM
The young blonde man steps in front of Yanosh, gently putting his hand on the dwarf's shoulder. "Not done quite yet, friend," he softly intones.
Stepping forward, Olaf says to Ragnhild, "Of Aiden's binding, he will say---though look to his hand for physical proof of Celsiun's approval. Of my particular luck, which I have promised to you, let us speak." He reaches about his neck, and takes the dull metal coin off its leash. Brandishing it high, he continues, "Ragnhild, in this coin was my particular luck found, and in this coin it is bound. Take it, and be done." That said, he offers it to her.
DM Kathy Thursday January 31st, 2008 1:05:32 AM Heyoka and Fisher join the party as they return to the Ice Palace. Yanosh opens with a bit of Dwarven diplomacy, and Olaf offers the rest of the payment.
"I accept your luck, which you give me freely," Ragnhild says. She gestures, and the male servant moves to pick up the small statue and bring it to you. Since Aiden seems indisposed, he hands it to Olaf with a little bow, accepting the coin in exchange. "Please accept in exchange the Shield of Domi, which you have long sought." She waves her hand in dismissal. "And, since we have no further business, I would ask that you leave my realm. It seems no longer to agree with your friend."
Thus, you depart the Ice Palace for the last time--with the Shield of Domi safely in your possession at last.
Heyoka Thursday January 31st, 2008 8:39:42 AM
Puzzled by the turn of events, she looks curiously at Olaf, holding the Shield proudly.
"What happened? Last I noticed, we were about to have a big fight. Did I get knocked out or something?"
Aiden Thursday January 31st, 2008 2:41:26 PM
ooc: apologies, by the time I got home from work, the post was up.
Aiden seemed quite numb and in a way, out of sorts when they had entered the different realm. Once they had exited, he seemed to awaken.
"Strange..." was all that he could say. "Where we were was not part of the Vein..." His eyes seemed to lower, as if embarrassed, "my apologies.." the last word awkwardly coming out, "for not dealing with her, but it appeared that the binding was strong."
Yanosh Thursday January 31st, 2008 2:59:43 PM
Once the Shield of Domi is in their possession Yanosh qeickly geusters everyone towards the exit. "Now is the time to leave. Come let us get the shield back to Ice Peaks." With that said Yanosh will lead the group out once the storm has stopped tearing at the land.
Olaf Thursday January 31st, 2008 8:32:46 PM
Olaf squints at the elven druid, nods, and says, "Heyoka, aye, good to have you back. We were all effected by that strange chamber, it seems." Then, he looks at the prize, the shield they have worked so hard to get, and the price paid for its return. And he spits on the ground, stamps his feet, and handing it to Aiden, continues, "I'm thinkin' its time to get this back to where it belongs. We've got a long, cold trip ahead, and the orcs may well be waitin' for us."
With that, he moves to scout the way into the deepening cold of the storm.
DM Kathy Friday February 1st, 2008 1:48:33 AM
United again, and with the Shield of Domi in your possession, you leave the Ice Palace and head back into the storm. Aiden feels instantly better on his return to the Ice Vein. He can only imagine what it would be like to try to leave for any length of time. His fate and the Vein's are truly entwined now.
When the storm finally blows itself out, you camp briefly to rest before starting your return to Ice Peak village. Although the journey is long, it is not nearly as difficult as it might have been. Aiden's new-found senses make it quite easy to avoid predators, orcs, and others that might halt your progress.
It is therefore a mere week after you begin your journey that you find yourselves once again in the familiar warmth of Ice Peak village. Some things have changed in your absence, but much remains the same. And everyone is overjoyed to have the Shield returned once again. A feast is held in your honor, and you are proclaimed heroes of the village.
Whatever else your adventuring careers hold, you now carry with you the quiet confidence that--at least once--you were able to fulfill a long-sought quest and bring harmony to your village once more.

Hey guys....
It was a good run (I think we were really coming together quite well there...)
Good luck folks (Kathy you definitely rocked as a gm!), and hopefully I'll be seeing you guys in future games (once my personal life straightens out a bit)
Kathy...just out of curiousity, what were the game mechanic results (I might bring Aiden into a game I'm dming tabletop along with the witch...)
