Dragons in the Wold are special. So is armor made from dragonhide. Only the most skilled armorsmiths can work with the hides of dragons to produce armor and shields. Crafting dragonhide armor is always a DC25 craft check. Raw dragonhide must be obtained by a character in game (usually by killing a dragon) -- NOT from the Catacombs.

One dragon produces enough hide for only one suit of armor. It can be of the following type:

  • one suit of masterwork studded leather armor for a creature as big as the dragon, or
  • one suit of masterwork hide armor for a creature one size smaller, or
  • one suit of masterwork scale or banded mail for a creature two sizes smaller, or
  • one suit of masterwork half-plate for a creature three sizes smaller, or
  • one masterwork breastplate or suit of full plate for a creature four sizes smaller.

In each case, enough hide is available to produce a small or large masterwork shield in addition to the armor, provided that the dragon is Large or larger.

Dragonhide armor also bestows a +3 save bonus against attacks based on a particular energy. A dragonhide shield bestows a +1 bonus. Shield and armor energy save bonuses stack with each other if the two come from the same dragon. Because dragonhide armor isn't made of metal, druids can wear it without penalty.

Dragonhide armor costs 4,000 gold pieces more than what masterwork armor of that type ordinarily costs, but it takes no longer to make than ordinary armor of that type. A dragonhide shield costs 1,000 gold pieces more than what a masterwork shield of that type ordinarily costs.

Dragonhide has 10 hit points per inch of thickness and hardness 10.

The Catacombs cannot buy or sell dragonhide armor at all. Dragonhide armor must be obtained in game, usually by killing a dragon. The Catacombs CAN enchant or upgrade existing dragonhide armor that is brought in to the magic shop.

Possible options are:

  • Copper, Green, Black (acid resistance)
  • Bronze, Blue (electricity resistance)
  • Gold, Brass, Red (fire resistance)
  • Silver, White (cold resistance)

Armor made of metallic dragons is possible, but in good societies it is vanishingly rare because the murder of metalic dragons is seen as an evil act, and the use of its hide for armor is suspect.

Note that other parts of dragons -- such as the blood, heart, etc. -- may have magical properties in the Wold as well.

These rules for dragonhide armor in the Wold were created by the Powers That Be and several Woldians in the Black Genie Center.

Approved for play by Assistant Campaign DM for Development Cayzle on 4 August 2007.
