PHB 5E(2024): What is approved for play, approved for play with changes, and not approved for play. (What we’ll announce to the members)

Woldian Campaign Setting

  • We do not use the WOTC’s 5E(2024) Multiverse. We use our own Woldverse. Woldian names, locations, and spirituality supersede the 5E(2024) multiverse. (Ex: p.56 speaks of “Yggdrasil.” It is not in the Wold. So we replaced it with our “Ishgara Tree.”) If you need a Woldian name for a location/situation, ask the PTB, and we’ll quickly give you one.
  • All Woldian PCs “may” continue to choose one or more gods or powers to patron. They may also simply patron the Gods of Wold as a group. (see below for exceptions)
  • The descriptive Woldian terms “Noble Races” and “Ignoble Races” have been dropped. (We used to use them for the Taur and Surface Drow races.)

Woldian Homebrew Material

  • All current homebrew materials become obsolete on March 1, 2025, when we switch to 5E(2024).
  • The Woldian race called “Surface Drow” has been dropped. The term ‘Surface Drow’ has been dropped. All drow, wherever they may live, are just called Drow when we Switch to 5E(2024). If your PC was a Surface Drow, it is now a Drow. All “former” Surface Drow will now use the Drow rules in the PHB5E(2024).
  • The Beastfolk races will not continue after we switch to 5E(2024). Players can retire their beastfolk PCs or change their current PC to a different species. All alterations will need to be approved by your DMs.
  • All Homebrew development will begin soon. The process: 1) present your idea on the BGC board. The PTB will give it a preliminary go/no-go. 2) Develop and complete the homebrew project, then it to the PTB. 3) The PTB will review it and approve, ask for changes, or deny.
  • We have high expectations for our three Taur races to be developed and approved for play by Switch Day (March 1, 2025.) SteveK will lead this project as a player and I expect Cayzle to be a part of this as well.
  • When we change to 5E2024, there will be no PC organizations. They will become NPC locations only and offer no benefits to PCs.

House Rules

  • No rule in the PHB5E(2024) is an excuse for your PC to not be of good alignment.
  • Only the 5E(2024) Core Rulebooks are approved for play at this time. All previous 5E books are not approved for play at this time.
  • PCs no longer have to take two levels in any chosen class.
  • No PC may have more than 4 classes.
  • All species in the Wold for 5E(2024) will be small or medium. We will not have any large sized species. (Note that the Goliath Species is medium.)
  • The Wold will continue to NOT USE initiative. Players and DMs post once a day, five posts per week. (no change) Because initiative is not used, the following rules apply:
    • If an ability is triggered by rolling initiative, it is instead triggered by the DM’s declaration that combat has begun.
    • If a Class provides an ability during initiative but not affecting who acts first, that ability instead applies to the character’s first attack during the first round of combat.
  • The Wold will continue to level every 6 months and not use “experience points.” (no change)
  • Any character sheet format is approved for use IF it can be shared with others. Players will have the responsibility of adding the DM approval statement to their character sheet at each level (eg: "Approved for play by DM Cayzle on 10/10/2024").
  • The house rule for rerolling 1s on healing spells will not continue in 5E(2024), because there are more options for healing than in PF1. (short rests, healer origin feat, etc.)
  • “Hero Points” will not continue after we switch to 5E(2024). Instead we will use “Heroic Inspiration” which is found on p.13 of the PHB5E(2024).

Switch Day Related

  • We will switch from the Pathfinder 1 game system to the 5E(2024) game system on March 1, 2025.
  • Members will receive specific instructions for “Switch Day,” regarding how you can adjust your current PC, etc when we get closer to March 1. We want everyone to be able to continue their PC if they choose, even if they have to make changes. We also want you to have the equal option of making a new PC if that is your preference.
  • In 2025, we will level all current Pathfinder PCs on January 1, 2025, (that’s the normal date) and all new PHB5E(2024) PCs on August 1, 2025 (that’s a month later than usual) due to 5E(2024) “Switch Day” happening on March 1, 2025.

PHB5E(2024): General Information

  • Psionics as presented in the PHB5E(2024) are approved for play.
  • All Backgrounds in the PHB5E(2024) are approved for use. (starting on p.177)
  • The “Alert” origin feat on (p.200) will not be used. In every case, the Skilled feat (p.201) will replace it.
  • There are no “firearms” in the Wold. So there will be no Musket, Pistol, bullets, or gunpowder.
  • We will not use the Variant: Equipment Sizes rule. (p.219)
  • We will not use the “Lifestyle Expense” rule. (p.230)
  • Characters will be created using the “Point Cost” method. (p.38)
  • PCs may have only one ability score below 10 (p.38). The Wold will continue to enforce that members must roleplay any PC ability scores less than 10.
  • The Wold will NOT use the “Appearance & Personality” tables of the PHB5E(2024) (pp.39-40). You decide the appearance and personality of your PC and list that on your character sheet.
  • The Wold will not use Trinkets (pp.46-47) as part of our character creation process. Instead, “Trinkets” will be earned during events (such as Yuletide) in the Giggling Ghost and in contests on the Loot ‘n Booty board.
  • Players have the choice of rolling their hit points or taking “fixed hit points by class.” (p.42) Note that PCs get max hit points at 1st level. (p.40)

PHB5E(2024): Classes

  • All PHB5E(2024) classes are approved for play as written in the PHB5.5 unless noted below:

Barbarian

  • The Barbarian’s Path of the Zealot may patron a god OR a power

Cleric

  • All clerics must patron one or more gods, not a power.
  • Cleric Domains are not “assigned” to any particular Woldian god. Choose the domain you want. Then roleplay how that aligns with your god.

Paladin

  • All paladins must patron one or more gods, not a power.
  • Existing Woldian rules state that DMs will tell players if a defeated / surrendered foe will reform. If they do not reform, then killing them is not an evil act. Oath of Vengeance paladins must show mercy to those who are willing to reform, as they are no longer “wicked.”

Rogue

  • The Assassin subclass is not approved for play.

Warlock

  • The Fiend subclass is not approved for play.
  • All warlocks must patron one or more powers, not a god.
  • Only powers may provide pacts, not gods.
  • A warlock chooses from any available pact. Roleplay how that aligns with your power.

PHB5E(2024) Species

  • All species are approved for play as written in thePHB5E(2024) unless noted below:

Aasimar

  • Traits remain the same as in the PHB5E(2024), but the descriptive text changes.
  • PHB5E(2024) says, “Aasimar are mortals who carry a spark of the Upper Planes within their souls.
  • This wording changes in the Wold to: Aasimar are mortals who carry a spark of the Lands of Rest within their souls.

Dragonborn

  • Not approved for play in the Wold.

Tiefling

  • Traits remain the same as in the PHB5E(2024), but the descriptive text changes.
  • PHB says, “Tieflings are either born in the Lower Planes or have fiendish ancestors who originated there. (etc.* you can read the rest of their opening paragraph)
  • The PHB wording changes in the Wold to: Tieflings are mortals who carry a spark of the Estates of Unrest.

PHB5E(2024) Spells

  • All spells are approved for play as written in the PHB5E(2024).

How to Change your Pathfinder PC to 5E2024

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: We will announce when members may begin to work on their PC for “Switch Day.” Until then, rolls will not count, nothing will be approved, and everything in these “announcements” are subject to change. You may “play,” but do not begin work on your actual PC until we give clearance for that sometime in the winter of 2025.

To change your current PF PC to 5e 2024, the Wold will use a “BLANK SLATE” method where a Player can build the PC from first level to the determined starting level only using the 5e 2024 PHB rules AND the Wold’s 5e 2024 house rules for building a PC.

  • You, the Player, decide whether you want to keep the “identity/personality” of your current PC or retire your current PC and roll up a brand new PC. You may change your PC as little or as much as you wish as long as the ACDM liaison and Jerry approve.
  • You inform your DM and your ACDM liaison, who will note your submission and when ready, they will approve your 5e PC for play, as usual.
  • The PC can retain its PC Name, Personality, and History. Everything else is a ‘blank slate,’ including abilities, equipment, hit points, skills, magic, and Gifts. Creating a new PC is, of course, completely ‘blank.’
  • Use the 5e 2024 PHB to create a 1st level PC.
  • Use the 5e 2024 PHB Level Advancement on p. 41 and Starting at Higher Levels starting on p. 43 to build your PC to the appropriate level.
  • Consult the ACDM liaison who will work with your DM on starting equipment and money, using the table on p.43 "Starting Equipment At Higher Levels" as a guide.
  • Wait for the conclusion of the DMG Conclave for a decision about Magic Items. We anticipate this to be in December.

Example of how reactions will work in play by post on our site

One of the most asked questions from those of you digging into the PHB5E(2024) has been, “How will we post all the reactions, interrupts, etc that are in the 5E(2024)game using our unique play-by-post method of play?” Below is a short explanation of that followed by an example post:

5E(2024) REACTIONS: HOW TO POST THEM ON WOLDIANGAMES.COM

A Reaction is a special action taken in response to a trigger. Opportunity Attacks and Readied Actions are also Reactions. You can take a Reaction on another creature's turn in addition to taking your own action and Bonus Action on your turn. Once you take a Reaction, you can't take another one until the start of your next turn.

Each player does their best to post “if/then” triggers needed to activate Reactions for his or her character. A PC gets just one Reaction per round, but a player can post multiple “if/then” options. The DM adjudicates each potential Reaction based on whichever trigger occurs first (or if no trigger occurs at all).

As a rule, each player posts once per day, and the DM also posts once. If an error is made in adjudication, we do not “retcon” or “change the past,” but the DM resolves the situation as fairly as possible without delaying the game.

AN EXAMPLE OF TWO CONSECUTIVE POSTS FROM TWO DIFFERENT PLAYERS USING THE 5E(2024) RULES:

(Post 1:)
Khalvos, the WorldTree Path Barbarian, dodges the evil Wizard’s lightning bolt and charges into the horde of foul minions. This is what he lives for, the thrill of battle, and he feels his blood boil in Rage. A swing of his mighty axe might hit, but Khalvos doesn’t care. “Fight me, Malv, you coward!”
He looks for opportunities to get to Malveaux the Wizard, or just to swing his axe again!
- - - - - -
Reflex DC (roll) vs Lightning Bolt
Move: 30’ to square B,9
Bonus Action: Rage
Action: Attack (roll) for (roll) damage
Reaction: If Malv moves within 30’, use ‘Branches of the Tree’ to teleport Malv to B,8 (Str DC 16 to avoid)
Reaction: Attack of Opportunity if a minion runs away [Attack (roll) Damage (roll)]
Reaction: Retaliation if a minion damages Khalvos (same attack and damage as above)

(Post 2:)
Tormond the Goliath doesn’t think Khalvos is going to keep everyone with pointy weapons occupied, and he’s worried about the Sorcerer, Jass. The giant-kin grows to Large size to prevent access to Jass, and Readies a massive swing on the first opponent to get past the barbarian.
- - - - - -
Bonus Action: Grow to Large
Readied Reaction: attack the first opponent within range. [Attack (roll) Damage (roll)]
(Note: Because it is a Ready Action, no other Reactions are possible.)
