Transmutation
Level: Witch 3
Components: V, S, M, F
Casting Time: 10 minutes
Range: Personal
Effect: The character
Duration: Permanent
Saving Throw: None
Spell Resistance: No

This spell makes a certain other spell permanent. The material component of the spell is a part of the witch's own body, and this part is permanently surrendered or marred when the spell is cast.

The character can make one of these spells permanent per casting: Alter Self, Bear's Endurance, Bull's Strength, Cat's Grace, Comprehend Languages, Detect Magic, Detect Thoughts, Discern Lies, Divine Favor, Endure Elements, Enlarge Person, Foresight (self only), Mind Blank, Polymorph, Protection from Spells (no gem required), Reduce Person, Remove Fear, Resist Energy, See Invisible, Speak with Animals, Tongues, True Seeing.

The character casts the surrender self spell, which takes ten minutes, by brewing a warm infusion of salted vinegar and preservative herbs, such as timmous root, in his cauldron. By the end of the casting, the witch will actually be in the cauldron, which must be the right size. Then the witch casts the spell (not from a scroll or wand) to be made permanent. Finally, the character uses a masterwork glass or silver dagger or spirit dagger to wound himself. The dagger must be broken after use, unless a spirit dagger is used.

The character cannot make a spell permanent on anyone else but himself -- not even his familiar can share the effect. Spells made permanent with Sacrifice Self cannot be dispelled with Dispel Magic or Greater Dispel Magic.

  • The character can choose to wound himself in the following ways:
    • Puncture Ear......+3% chance spell failure (V spells), -2 listen
    • Remove Eye(1)........-1 on ranged attacks, -2 search, spot
    • Remove Finger.....+4% chance spell failure (S spells)
    • Remove Nose(1)......-2 on bluff, perform.
    • Ruin Complexion...Skin bubbles in warts, -2 disguise, diplomacy.
    • Split Tongue......+4% chance spell failure (V spells)
    • Stab Back.........Humped posture, -10 movement, can't run

(1) The witch can choose to regrow a nose or eye, but it grows back disfigured -- for a nose, long, crooked, warty; for an eye, blind, milky, maybe weeping tears or pus.

  • Note that the spell can be cast multiple times, but each type of wounding can be used only once. If the wound is healed or regenerated, the permanent spell ends. A witch who wishes to experiment may vary the permanent effect from time to time by healing the self-inflicted damage and recasting this spell.
