Gargulites

Before the Year of Ascension, Gargul was apathetic bout the Wold, and allowed Marteaus to grow in power by filling his niche. During that time, Gargul was seen as a god of evil. And he basically was. But as he traveled the Wold, he came to a more nuanced view. He saw himself as the god of both death and life, and he sought to inspire respect as well as fear -- or instead of fear -- in mortals.

During the Year of Ascension, Gargul stepped forward and helped the adventurers of the Wold defeat Marteus. By that time, the cult god had amassed great power over all living things with his mastery of the Jericho's Four Rings of Creation. But he had no power over the undead -- and Gargul allowed the adventurers of the Wold to become undead! As undead things, they had the power to fight Marteaus, power that even the gods lacked then.

After the Year of Ascension, Gargul made his peace with all the Gods of the Wold and the Gods of Testing. He took back his mantle and authority. But he sought to change the way that mortals viewed him.

Some of Gargul's followers hated this change. They reveled in death and evil. They are the Red Gargulites. They wanted to compel Gargul to embrace evil. Some fringe Reds even began to create and command undead, in alliance with the Sons of Dread. Others simply sought to return to the way things had been.

Other followers of Gargul rose to fight the Reds, to be reformers, to embrace the new way of looking at life and death. Those are the Black Gargulites, and they are the most fanatic of those seeking reform.
