Lord Mederick

You are the best thing that ever happened to this gods-forsaken town. You are highly intelligent, well-educated, experienced and capable. You always know what’s best, and fortunately, being Lord Mayor, you get to make the decisions.

The rabble, of course, don’t see things this way. They call you unflattering and vulgar names because you never “consult” anyone on matters pertaining to town governance. As if you needed the opinions of a bunch of half-witted shopkeepers!

Your results, you’re fond of telling people, speak for themselves. Everyone whined and complained when you finally sealed that brilliant truce with the hobgoblins, but look at the result. Northbrook has never been so peaceful and prosperous--but does anyone thank you? Of course not! They grumble and mutter about your “high-handed” ways, as if there was something wrong with clearly and unambiguously stating one’s opinion, or the results of one’s thoughtful and reasoned study of a particular subject.

Ungrateful, that’s their trouble. But you realize that that’s just the way of things with the lower orders, and you take no real offense. In spite of everything, you love this town, and its people, and you’d do just about anything for them.

Guilt and Innocence

You had nothing to do with the theft.

Mind you, being both very conscious of your station and rather...um...emphatic when expressing yourself you might deny your involvement so vehemently that it makes people suspicious. Then again, you might not. Your call.

Clues

As far as you know, you have the only key to the lock on this warehouse. The key is kept on a ring with several other keys. During the day, you wear the ring on your person. At night, you place it on a table near your bed.

The last time you opened the lock was seven days ago, just before sunset. Several bags of grain from the current harvest were added to the tribute to bring it up to the required amount. You have not opened the lock since.

Weapons, Armor, Equipment, Money

Your character sheet assumes you do not currently have your armor or weapons with you. You do have some back at your house if you need them. You are assumed to be wearing your Cloak of Charisma, as it helps you in your day-to-day responsibilities.

If you should need some common item (rope, lantern, hammer, etc.), you can probably find it at your house. Similarly, no money is listed, but you have access to money should you need it.

Victory Condition

You want to save the town you love and preserve the treaty you worked so hard to establish. The only way to do that is to find the tribute, and find the person responsible for the theft (so that this doesn’t happen again).
