This spell has three applications.

  • First, the witch can physically bring his imbued spirit helper to him from wherever the spirit is. The Spirit Dagger or Spirit Animal is teleported without error into the witch's cauldron -- if he is calling a Spirit Cauldron, then no extra cauldron is needed. If the spirit is slain, this spell will recall the imbued spirit's remains. This version of the spell inflicts 1d4 temporary Con damage on the witch.
  • Second, this spell can call to any spirit of a living, sleeping creature. This requires the witch's cauldron and a physical token (hair, nail, prized possession) of the creature to be called. If the creature is willing, then its spirit travels to the witch and converses with him. A ghostly image of the creature appears in the witch's cauldron. The conversation lasts one minute per level, or when the creature or the witch ends it or if it wakes. After the spell is finished, the creature remembers the conversation as a dream. This version of the spell inflicts 2d4 temporary Con damage on the witch.
  • Third, this spell can call to a willing spirit of a incorporeal creature or deceased soul. This requires the witch's cauldron and a token or relic (hair, bone, etc) of the spirit. The DM may rule that any given spirit is unavailable, even if willing. A willing spirit then makes a hide check of 1d20 vs. DC 20 to evade Gargul's watch and temporarily escape back to the Wold of the living. If cast in a coven, the spirit can boost the Hide roll with cooperation bonuses given by the witches in the coven. This version also lasts one minute per level, or when the spirit or the witch ends it. It inflicts 3d4 temporary Con damage on the witch.
  • The material component of this spell is a warm infusion of stimulating herbs, such as ginseng, dark wellow, and casmiff root.
