This spell has two applications.

  • First, the witch can bring a willing dead creature back to life. This spell is not effective if the soul of the creature has passed to the Lands of Rest, so it can be cast only within ten minutes after death, when the soul is still in the Realm of Shadows. At the DM's option, this spell might work in the event that the soul is trapped or has chosen to stay in the Realms of Shadow. To start, the Witch casts this spell. Then the witch travels to the Realm of Shadows, usually with the Ethereal Jaunt spell. Then the witch tracks down the soul -- this is a level check against DC 20, with a +2 synergy bonus if the witch has five ranks of Wilderness Lore and a +2 aid other bonus if the witch has a spirit animal. If the soul is found, the witch must catch it in a tiny cauldron -- this is a Alchemy check against DC 20, with the usual Alchemy bonus if the witch has a spirit cauldron. Finally, the witch must cut a hole back into the Wold so the soul can be carried through -- this requires a Str check against DC 20, with an aid other bonus equal to the enhancement bonus of the spirit dagger or other ghost touch weapon used. If any of these checks fail, the soul is lost and cannot be brought back with this spell. Of course, any travel in the Realm of Shadow is fraught with danger.
  • Using this spell is exactly similar in its mechanics to the Druidic version of the spell, but the reincarnated soul is not generally placed in an animal, fey, or outsider form. Instead, the reincarnated creature manifests randomly as detailed below:

d% ........Incarnation

01&08........Centaur
09–16........Drow
17–24........Dwarf
25–32........Elf
33–40........Gnome
41–48........Half-Elf
49–56........Halfling
57–64........Half-Orc
65–72........Human
73–80........Minotaur
81–88........Wemic
89–00........Return to Original Form

  • In the second application, this spell restores life and function to an imbued spirit that has been hurt, damaged, or slain. There is no need to enter the Realm of Shadows. In this application, the spell restores the imbued spirit to life although this requires the physical remains of the imbued spirit. In addition, whether the spirit was alive or dead initially, this application has the effect of a Heal spell.
  • For both applications, the focus is the witch's cauldron, into which the remains must be placed. If the target is a slain or damaged spirit cauldron, then no second cauldron is needed.
